- 0:02There are many things in the world which we know exist, not
- 0:06because we can directly perceive them, but because we can
- 0:10experience their effects. Thus we cannot see gravity, but
- 0:15we know it exists. We cannot see radiation, but
- 0:20again we know it exists. As we continue to develop powers
- 0:25of the vital and mental planes, we begin to recognize that there
- 0:29are many pressures of feelings, of emotions, of thought, of
- 0:35willpower, which are not perceptible directly, but which
- 0:40we understand by their impact upon us.
- 0:44Each more advanced level of the evolutionary development brings
- 0:49us to more and more subtle levels of understanding, thus
- 0:54making it possible for us to intuit and know these more
- 0:58subtle energies. We come then to the experience
- 1:02of the soul. Those who live entirely on the
- 1:06external level of their being, primarily in the physical and
- 1:10vital consciousness, are unable to appreciate the existence of
- 1:14the soul. This is, however, not a
- 1:18conclusion that the soul does not exist.
- 1:21Rather, it is a declaration of the limitations of the ability
- 1:26of those individuals at that stage in their development to
- 1:30relate to this soul experience. Just as someone fully engaged at
- 1:36the physical level will rarely have the ability to appreciate
- 1:40and understand complex forms of reasoning, logic, mathematics,
- 1:46statistical analysis, scientific thinking, et cetera, we find
- 1:51that certain capacities develop only when the being is ready.
- 1:58We can see individuals mature either through the normal
- 2:02process of growth or through an inner readiness that reorients
- 2:07the being towards the mental or spiritual realms of experience
- 2:12and thereby begin to understand, appreciate, and recognize the
- 2:18influence of the soul and actually be able to encourage
- 2:23its action and ability to direct the external instruments of
- 2:28body, life, and mind. Sri Aurobindo outlines the way
- 2:32the soul begins to assert its influence over the outer being
- 2:37and how we can recognize that influence before we have the
- 2:41direct contact and experience of the soul in its own native form.
- 2:48Sri Aurobindo notes Quote As the evolution proceeds, nature
- 2:53begins slowly and tentatively to manifest our occult parts.
- 2:59She leads us to look more and more within ourselves, or sets
- 3:04out to initiate more clearly recognizable intimations and
- 3:08formations of them on the surface.
- 3:11The soul in us, the psychic principle, has already begun to
- 3:15take secret form. It puts forward and develops a
- 3:20soul personality, a distinct psychic being to represent it.
- 3:25This psychic being remains still behind the veil in our
- 3:29subliminal part, like the true mental, the true vital, or the
- 3:34true or subtle physical being within us.
- 3:37But like them, it acts on the surface life by the influences
- 3:42and intimations it throws up upon that surface.
- 3:47These form part of the surface aggregate, which is the
- 3:50conglomerate effect of the inner influences and upsurging the
- 3:55visible formation and superstructure which we
- 3:59ordinarily experience and think of as ourselves.
- 4:05On this ignorant surface we become dimly aware of something
- 4:09that can be called a soul, as distinct from mind, life, or
- 4:13body. We feel it not only as our
- 4:16mental idea or vague instinct of ourselves, but as a sensible
- 4:21influence in our life and character and action, a certain
- 4:27sensitive feeling for all that is true and good and beautiful,
- 4:31fine and pure and noble, a response to it, a demand for it,
- 4:37a pressure on mind and life to accept and formulate it.
- 4:41In our thought, feelings, conduct, character is the most
- 4:47usually recognized, the most general and characteristic,
- 4:51though not the sole sign of this influence of the psyche, of the
- 4:58man who has not this element in him, or does not respond at all
- 5:02to this urge. We say that he has no soul, for
- 5:07it is this influence that we can most easily recognize as a finer
- 5:12or even a diviner part in US and the most powerful for the slow
- 5:17turning towards some aid at perfection in our nature.
