crusts cut 0:26 off well Brian this is a very nutritious lunch all the food groups are 0:32 represented did your mom marry Mr Rogers uh no Mr Johnson 0:39 huh what are you babbling about well what IID said was th in in the math club 0:45 uh the Latin club and the physics Club physics Club 0:51 hey Cherry do you belong to the physics Club 0:57 that's an academic Club so so academic Clips aren't the same as 1:04 other kinds of Clips ah but the dorks like him they 1:09 are what do you guys do in your Club in physics well we we uh we talk about 1:15 physics uh properties of physics so it's sort of social demented and sad but 1:21 social right yeah I guess you could consider a social situation um I mean 1:26 there are there children in my club and uh yeah at the end of the year we have um 1:32 we have you know big banquet at the uh at the Hilton you load up your party no we get dressed up I mean uh but 1:40 we don't uh we don't get high only brers like you get high and I didn't have any shoes so I had to borrow my dads it was 1:46 kind of weird cuz my mom doesn't like me to wear other people's shoes and uh my cousin k um my cousin Kendall from 1:51 Indiana he got high once you know he started eating like really weird foods and uh and then it just felt like he didn't blow anywhere you know kind of 1:58 like you know Twilight Zone kind of what do you know about trigonometry I could care less about trigonometry 2:04 Bender did you know without trigonometry there'd be no engineering without lamps there'd be no 2:11 [Music] light hello hello I'm Katie and welcome 2:19 to retrade your pop culture rewind it is season 2:25 2 and I hope that you feel like you're in for an epic ride because I it's John 2:30 Hughes Shermer hi and Beyond this season friend of the show welcoming back Ryan 2:39 thank you so much for joining me to open season two of retrade what is new with 2:45 you what's going on in your world of podcasting my world of podcasting well as maybe some of your listeners know but 2:52 of course Katie and I we do a bi-weekly Rocky podcast we're on season five Movie 2:57 5 Rocky five how halfway through the film maybe maybe it's it's shaping up to 3:03 be the longest season of one more round by far anyways if you're a rocky fan 3:08 that's really the best podcast out there that covers Rocky I I don't care if anyone's listening to that thinks otherwise it just is the best Rocky 3:14 podcast that covers Rocky it's called one more round the rocky series podcast and I also do another podcast I'll just 3:21 plug this one it's called the worst of the best podcast you've been on it a couple times I'm definitely going to have you on again I do most the episodes 3:28 with my brother but he can't make it recording so I do look out for guest hosts it's basically where we just 3:34 aggregate a best of topic list we just dropped an episode today at the time of this recording about predictions in 3:40 history that didn't age well so these are bad predictions of history that didn't age well then we pick so these 3:45 are the best worst if that makes sense and then we picked the which one we really think was the biggest o that's a 3:51 that's a bad prediction that did not age well so yeah it's those kind of topics so it's a fun one to do my prediction 4:00 pain pain yes you guys are all over the place yes we're terrible yeah yeah yeah 4:06 I like the worst of the best a lot yeah it's fun than you because it's very that's one that's one that's one 4:11 listener yeah that's the thing about it so yeah we do a very focused Rocky pocket if you're not a rocky fan you're probably not listening to that show at 4:17 all and why would you but the worst of the best what's good about it is that there are a variety of topics but we try 4:23 to make it such where every week's a different a holy different topic and we try to make it where even if you don't 4:29 don't know the topic that's the point you're learning as you're listening we give you know very brief whatever 4:35 descriptions of whatever the topic is but then you're kind of learning and the fun thing is you as a listener will also 4:41 have your own picks what you think is the worst yeah I I don't know I think it's fun I do like it too yeah it's fun 4:47 I listen every whenever they come out you're a sweetheart I appreciate it well 4:52 we do have a listener email that I wanted to bring up before we open the Time Capsule this one is from Scott from 4:59 all 90s action all the time he was very kind congratulating me on my first season he says hi Katie just 5:06 thought I'd send you a quick congratulate you on wrapping up season one of your podcast which I very much 5:12 enjoyed throughout it was very interesting you highlighting all the similarities between Kurt and Patrick on 5:17 the wrap-up episode also despite not having previously considered them to be 5:22 close in looks I can definitely see it more now I'm glad that that happened Scott he says oh yeah I meant to also 5:29 say on the fatherhood episode you and your guest were debating where The Proclaimers were from and doing when 5:36 when we were doing the music chart stuff and I can confirm that they come from my hometown of Edinburgh Scotland oh 5:45 Scotland okay yeah yeah that's right thank you for the email if you want to be like Scott and you should you should 5:52 send me an email at retrade podcast gmail.com okay as I mentioned in the 5:58 trailer for season two I have mixed up we have a new format that we're going to 6:03 try out Ryan for the Time Capsule so should we get to opening the Time 6:08 Capsule from February 15th 1985 This is 40 this is the 40th 6:15 anniversary jeez 40 so I'm 6:21 old well we're all old and that's why we do retrade because we we can think back 6:27 so I have come up with some different C ories for the Time Capsule and we're going to spin to choose one and then I'm 6:35 going to ask you trivia questions oh to see test your test your retro knowledge 6:42 okay all right all right we're gonna spin it do the listeners get to play at home yes okay we have come to the 6:51 category totally tasty that's what we spun all right Ryan let's see a food 6:57 question I presume yes totally tasty H I have several questions let me see which 7:04 1980 snack introduced a zesty salad dressing inspired to flavor in a crunchy 7:09 tortilla chip making it a fan favorite so what's the brand of Chip yeah what like what's it's a 7:17 snack what is it well the Doral doril chips but what 7:24 kind oh these were you know this is stuff relative to 1985 yeah well don't 7:30 forget American and Canadians have different we have different snack items like our candy bars are for example are 7:36 different you notice how I said candy bars because in Canada we call them chocolate bars but so give me a hint s 7:41 is it a chip or is it like bugles or is it something like that no you were right with Doritos you were right but it's a 7:47 flavor ran style ranch style flavor chips Doritos or is it the zesty cheese 7:52 one what's it called it is it you know how there's multiple flavors of Doritos what do they call it 8:00 boy did I say it's not called was it something ranch right yeah yeah there's one cool cool 8:08 ranch you see people at home they're yelling yeah of course and I love Doritos I just don't eat them anymore 8:13 try to stay healthy yes but this is when you were a kid weren't you 10 years old at this 8:19 time you know what's funny yes I was I was yes thank you for aging me publicly I'm just F yes I was 10 years old at ' 8:25 85 and I don't think Doritos came or they weren't really popularized until I 8:31 was like a teenager I think they probably obviously came to the States first but if they were in Canadian stores my parent P way my parents never 8:37 bought them let me rephrase that I may have bought my own Doritos when I had my own money when I started deling newspapers or working at a restaurant so 8:44 anyways course cool ranch dressing and how could I forget that because it's literally a line from a guns and& roses 8:51 song that came out that Ox Rose says that in the song and all my all any G&R 8:56 fan that might be listening to this is yelling at me because I'm a big G&R fan because there cuz he actually says the song it's 9:02 pretty tied up there you go see he says cool ranch dressing any it's like how 9:07 could I forget that so shame on me well so yeah the snack that was introduced was Cool Ranch Doritos all right let's 9:14 spin it again you that was not very good let's let's see what else we got oh jeez let's see I'm 9:22 terrible oh it's on the line VHS vault is the category let's see what we have 9:27 here what can I ask you okay there are five choices let's see 9:34 how many you can get the top five video rentals 1985 the whole year 9:41 1985 I'll give you hints oh boy okay let's see how many of the of the top five for the whole year you can list 9:48 here's your hint martial arts Sci-Fi Action 9:53 slapstick comedy jungle adventure and college pranks 9:59 those were the ingredients of the top five rentals in 85 can you name them okay so say say we'll say the first 10:07 one again just the first the first category I'll just guess like that go by cat martial arts 85 martial arts Kate 10:15 kit yes Sci-Fi Action oh VHS rentals this is tricky s 10:22 old movie comes out rent yep okay I'm going to go well I know Terminator came in part uh in ' 84 so maybe the rental 10:28 was 85 you are correct the Terminator is the number two okay okay slapstick 10:36 comedy um slapstick comedy this one's gonna be 10:41 a little bit tricky because there's so many 80s comedies it's ridiculous I know I'm just G to go with I don't like the 10:47 term slapstick but I'm going to go with vacation Police Academy police that is 10:54 slad y you're right about slapstick and I was I think uh the original uh vacation might be earlier I think it's 10:59 like 83 8884 I yeah okay okay yeah that's legit yeah that's legit you're 11:06 doing pretty good how are you doing at home you guys okay jungle Adventure 11:12 Romance the yes yes one of my favorite movies of all time and college 11:18 pranks college pranks I know this is going to be can 11:24 you at this point I don't know the prank part a prank movie 11:29 like I guess pranks like hij Jinks is that what that means maybe hij Jinks Vice pranks cuz pranks is when you play 11:34 trick on somebody right mhm yeah yeah trick of that's accurate okay give me 11:40 the maybe just give me I know it's a cheat but give me a cheat what's the actors one of the actor names top I know 11:47 it's a cheat but I I don't Anthony Edwards is one of the actors oh really 11:53 oh something like I know it's not Weird Science but it's something like that not Anthony Michael Hall Anthony Edwards 11:59 yeah I know I know the guy from ER right yeah yeah yeah and 12:04 to home I hope you know it I hope you know it I haven't seen it Revenge of the 12:10 Nerds oh I have seen you know I've seen that movie like literally maybe once 12:15 it's a funny it's funny about about 8s comedies the those those type of comedies even now and then or whatever 12:21 it was and like you said I was 10 years old when that came out so even when I became a teenager I could rent those R-rated comedies as I well I watch when 12:29 I was younger but the point is I never thought they were that funny I don't even think Animal House oh I know don't say it Ryan I don't think Animal House 12:35 is as funny as people think it is I'm not I was never I never thought it was that kind of funny now I admit I like 12:42 the Naked Gun films I thought those were funny well I would categorize those as two different genres I think revenge of 12:48 the runchy comedy versus sacal look we're looking at a 12:54 girl on a bra I gotta get that was a lot in the 80s there was a of that well they 13:00 resurged it with the American Pie films and I admit I watched them because it was like that Resurgence I just I guess 13:05 maybe I'm a prude but I which I'm I'm really not but sex sex humor though it's 13:11 funny it's just when the whole premise is we have to get laid it gets it's beneath you because you are a film no I 13:19 mean truly because you are a film connoisseur you're like yeah yeah that's okay you know I justy ROM the storm 13:27 storm sto the stone more Terminator like or of course the original vacation films 13:33 those types of films I just like that kind of humor better that's all mhm oddly enough I do I mean in re-watching 13:39 Revenge of the Nerds now your mind will be blown at how inappropriate a 13:46 lot I love that I no there's literally a rape scene oh that's but it was funny in 13:53 you know like that you know like that kind of stuff you're like oh [ __ ] when you watch it now but I remember it I 13:58 remember remember thinking it was funny uh oh sure it's hilarious Revenge of the Nerds is always a fun thing to laugh at 14:06 yeah isn't it oh my God okay one more fil back then is weird it's weird and 14:11 I'm glad we've changed this a culture but it's weird how we you made that a bit of a comedy thing 14:17 you know watching girls yeah just actually just watching girls change without their knowledge is actually you shouldn't do that that's actually a 14:24 crime yeah yeah but how funny is that there's a people on the room yeah it's 14:30 people all right one more Ryan do you think all right think we got for one more this is f i could play every one of 14:37 these I think this is great I just I'm just not as good as I had hoped I'd be oh that's on the line it's back in the 14:43 headlines you guys let's see I'll give you a couple because some of them are pretty easy in 1985 who became the 14:51 General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union was that 14:57 gorbachov m g GB good good job let's do maybe one more in 1985 which criminal 15:04 known for a string of terrorizing crimes in California was finally apprehended 15:09 after alluding authorities for months is that the Summer of Sam no you have another guest 85 15:18 California oh oh I oh this I'm I'm actually I do enjoy 15:25 True Crime too I know you're going to say be I'll be like oh yes of course just like there's so many teen comedy 15:31 films in the 80s there's so many seral hard to pull them out of nowhere I know like I know almost all the stories but 15:37 the timelines I like get I know he entered people I think he went into someone's garage at one point what was 15:42 this guy's name yeah the community helped yeah help capture him Richard 15:48 Ramirez that's right that's right he was scary looking he is scary looking that 15:53 yeah see I even know what he looks like that's I just forgot the year yep yeah interesting wow yeah scary he was a 15:59 scary guy he's one of the scary ones he yeah um I mean as serial kill I know they're 16:06 all scary no but I mean even bu isn't scary like you don't see he looks like a normal person yeah that's what that in a 16:13 way that's almost more scary cuz he he just Blends in but yeah Ramirez looks like a killer he he just looks like yeah 16:20 I I kill people sure you do I bet you do all right Ryan what do you think 16:26 about the new segments in format well I could play the whole episode like this I mean I love trivia I I love I'm 16:33 not very good well I know what I know and I know what I don't know but I mean I I pride myself a little bit when it 16:39 comes to this timeline of stuff and movies and I do fairly well like I do fairly okay but I love it I I think it's 16:46 a great segment I'm I can't wait to play at home myself and then yell at the other hoes who are on the spot and say I 16:51 know so much more than they do so I will say it requires a lot more research on my end to have 12 questions ready for 12 16:59 ments but but anyway you guys at home let me know what you think do you like the trivia version do you like the wheel 17:04 spinning let me know okay Ryan we're gonna be talking about The 17:10 Breakfast Club today 1985 February 40th anniversary but wow 40 years how did you 17:18 first discover John Hughes films do you do you have any history with him or what 17:24 do you think just natural history I was like like you said I was born in 75 and so I of the age I I saw the films not 17:31 knowing John Hughes per se because even when I was young I kind of knew oh stepen spilberg I think I've heard of 17:36 him but I saw all the films that these guys did you know so it wasn't until I got a little bit older my teens when be 17:43 more of that like you said I've always I've watched movies my whole life I've I've I've devoured movies and but when I 17:49 became a young teen and started like actually like getting film Almanac type 17:54 books while before Wikipedia and for the internet I would get the yearly 18:00 I forgot what they're called like a Roger dber had one oh cool yeah they're like these and they're film review books 18:07 so I would buy them yearly and they'd have the actors in the back they tell you every movie they were in on what 18:14 page number it was on and so I look up you know oh Tom Cruz was in this film I 18:19 didn't know that I would go to the movie store to rent the that was your IMDb there you go that was your IMDb back in 18:24 day was these big books You' buy to find what what movies your favorite actress had been in there's different different brands but 18:31 the idea I bought them every year for a few years and I also was a subscriber to Entertainment Weekly I I'm a young teen 18:37 and I actually got my own subscription to that magazine so I was a huge movie Nut this is all again all pre- internet this is how you got your hey kids this 18:43 is how we did it back in the day it was all on paper that's how we got our information was on paper and I used to 18:49 watch Entertainment Tonight on TV I'd watch Cisco and Eber of course every every weekend okay I sailed that so 18:55 regarding John Hughes I was younger so I watched all the films that well sorry the big ones on your list that you sent 19:01 me and there was a couple that you sent me that choose from I never even heard of that film so his his filmography is much bigger than I ever would have 19:08 thought without looking into it so yes Breakfast Club 16 Candles pretty and pink I saw all those you know as a young 19:15 kid you know of course Molly ringwell was like every young boy's Crush you know she was that cutie patootie that we 19:21 we enjoyed as as young men so yeah I saw them oh Uncle Buck all that stuff for sure yeah on and ni yeah all right well 19:29 let's get into the movie The Breakfast 19:34 [Music] Club 40th anniversary you guys how does 19:41 how does that grab you February 15th 1985 wow uh now I did find something 19:48 interesting about this John Hughes actually wrote The Breakfast Club that came out in 1985 before he wrote 16 19:57 candles that came out in 84 but the studio was concerned that the 20:03 Breakfast Club would be you know that it's a drama it's you know completely filmed in house featuring just talking 20:10 so they wanted him to do something more tried and true so something along the lines of National Lampoon's Animal House 20:17 so he wrote 16 candles and ironically 16 Candles wasn't as successful both 20:23 commercially and critically and The Breakfast Club was a hit as we will get into so 20:29 I just thought that tag that it is interesting but I got a couple theories and reasons so this is interesting that 20:35 you bring this up because 16 Candles it it's a little bit more maybe had a little bit more of that ooh humor that 20:41 studios in the 80s were looking for because I had know Breakfast Club that's the one thing they didn't like about it not just what you just said there but 20:47 there was enough boobs and things like that that was the big thing about the 80s oh like flashing scenes of girl topess girls running around and it just 20:55 goes to show you I'm not going to say like look at me being like you're talking about being a bit of a film connoisseur the public does agree with 21:02 me this film over time has shown you that people are talking about breakfast club in a in a reverent manner so to 21:08 speak over the decades more they are about nerds I think people think Revenge of the Nerds is a better film than it is 21:14 that's what objectively you can't say yeah you know what I mean like it's it's just it doesn't it didn't it influenced 21:20 a lot of other garbage kind of ranchy teen comedies nothing nothing really 21:26 objectively film quality good came out of that string of genre films I I know people got a kick out of it I just say 21:32 all that because yeah I mean we'll get into the covering the film I just really appreciate this film for that reason 21:38 that it came out in a time where John Hughes said hey I understand the studios you're saying this is what you think the 21:43 box office wants or whatever it is what people want and it just kind of goes to show you that maybe that wasn't always 21:49 the case there wasn't there was an audience as well maybe as well there was an audience that wanted this type of 21:55 film because this is a film you can watch 40 years later and with your kids today I yeah this is a film I'd be very 22:01 yeah a couple curse words who cares we swear in our home so it's just uh yeah this is a this is a very good film and I 22:07 I appreciate that John made this film I agree it's your point it is rated 22:12 R which is the only one of that first Trilogy of teen films of his which is 22:19 interesting because there's not nudity in this 16 Candles actually had nudity 22:24 and implied rape in it and it was only rated PG G and this is our more more 22:31 rape eh yeah oh yeah it was a whole thing in the 80s I haven't seen in a long time 22:39 that's why they pretty pink 16 Candles it's probably been since the 80s that I've seen those films just FY well it's implied they don't show anything right 22:45 of course but it yeah and then this movie there were things that were originally either planned or filmed that 22:53 were taken out for example there was nudity there was a gym teacher that they were going to show n and they took it 22:59 out you know things like that so that I found that interesting it does have a 23:05 7.8 uh on IMDb which wholeheartedly agree this is an excellent film there's 23:11 only a handful of movies that we're going to talk about on this season where John both directed and wrote and this is 23:19 one of them he was the director and the writer did you see that this is one of 23:25 those stories and I I believe it but you know how a lot of times they're like oh like the rocky story he wrote it in one 23:30 day or something right apparently John Hughes did write this screenplay in two 23:36 days over the July 4th weekend in 1982 I believe it but like all films 23:44 there was on the set re revisions there's just there's no way what we saw on the screen but yes I would say 60 to 23:51 I'll even say maybe 80% of the film was written I somebody like John Hughes who's a writer Storyteller they just get 23:57 it they get it out people are like that they just get it out of their system but as the as a production go gets green lit 24:03 and goes on and there because I know things were changed on the Fly I mean there was on the Fly stuff that happened during the filming that was not in the 24:09 script what do you call improv in the in the film itself so yeah well I probably don't need to this 24:16 is probably like the movie I don't need to read a description for because I assume everybody has seen this multiple 24:22 times but if it's been 40 years for you or in case you haven't seen it the 24:28 breakfast Club follows five high school students from different clicks Claire 24:33 the princess Andrew the athlete Bender the criminal Brian the brain and Allison 24:39 the basket case who are forced to spend a Saturday in detention together initially they Clash due to their social 24:45 differences but as the day progresses they open up about their struggles insecurities and pressures from parents 24:51 and peers through deep conversations and shared experiences 24:57 they form an unexpected Bond realizing that they are more alike than they thought by the end of the day they leave 25:03 detention changed unsure if their new found connection will survive outside the school 25:09 walls can I can I Pat myself in the back I rarely brag but I like to brag every 25:14 now and then I haven't seen this movie in a while so it's been I don't know okay like I don't I don't rewatch a lot 25:20 of films in general just I just don't have time especially as my life has gone on and my family's gone bigger and my 25:26 job and the military so it's hard for me when I free time I try to just watch something new because I like to watch something new but it's been a while and 25:33 as I was watching the film and watching the characters talk and everything it dawned on me well not of course but I 25:39 mean it's obvious but the same thing what I liked about is what I should say is that brought me back to being a teenager 25:45 myself and I'll get to that because I think this is what everyone does when they watch this film they they go back 25:50 to theirselves how who were you where did you identify within this group of you know they yes their character and 25:57 it's very you know very cut and dry what each of these people represent in high school personalities or or groups of 26:03 social groups but I was the essay meaning at the end of the film when they 26:09 have the essay and it basically says oh we're everybody we're all the same we're all parts of each other that that was me 26:16 that was actually me in high school I was the I was a bit of a nerd but I also dressed preppy but I was also playing 26:24 rugby I also listened to heavy metal and rock and roll so I fit all these 26:29 categories of PE I did all those things and I was the guy that or individual 26:35 that was able to associate with old those groups did exist skaters the punks the jocks the Nerds but Ryan himself I I 26:43 was able to hang out and talk to all those groups I don't know why but so I was the essay at the end I just always 26:49 lived that way I never had an identity because I just enjoyed whatever I enjoyed that sport I enjoyed that kind 26:54 of music I enjoyed know trying to do well in school or stay out of TR trouble that kind of personality I wasn't a bad 27:00 boy but like but like the Jud Nelson character yeah I I liked probably the music he would listen to It's all that 27:06 kind of stuff I don't know so it just reminded me of my own childhood and youth oh yeah I identify with all these 27:11 people but then they did too that was the whole message but it is and I think 27:17 that's why this movie I mean there are a number of reasons but I think that's one of the reasons this resonates with 27:23 people so much is because I would argue most people I mean I think that's to 27:28 your point that kind of the point of the movie most of us myself included you we 27:34 identify very few people are just the popular clicky girl very few people are 27:39 just the The Jock you know so we all identify that was the thing they would 27:45 separate themselves and that's what they found in this situation is oh we're forced to get 27:51 to know each other we find out we're more or much the same and not to get all like hoyy toyy about the world but isn't 27:58 that what the world is kind of like we divide with borders and race and Creed and sexuality when when you get down to 28:04 it we probably have a lot more in common than the perceived differences if we just sat and had a conversation with 28:10 each other 100% if you spend time with somebody who's different from you 28:15 granted these are all white kids but well sure you know whatever it is you other different groups whatever 28:23 they are and you only find out a lot of times people as you as you grow as you 28:29 mature you realize everybody's just human and yeah I you know there's so 28:35 many differences with differences it's okay to be different but with those differences we can learn from each other 28:41 I think that's the that's the wonderful message about this film this is why it's a Timeless film so yes it's a 28:46 teenage characters in a high school but once you get past the the set that 28:52 they're using and the ages of the characters it's actually just a universal language and experience yeah 28:58 it's yeah beautifully done it's really kind of amazing that this was made when it was made that it can be looked at at 29:04 so many different levels it's it's actually a much deeper film than I even remembered until my reat recently yeah 29:10 very well put Ryan let's talk about our cast and it's very small which is 29:15 unusual you know there's really what seven people in this that's it right 29:21 more or less yeah the kids the janitor and the principal not principal was he 29:26 the principal principal let's we'll talk about that we will talk about that but I think the so amelo 29:34 Estes plays the Sporto Andrew Clark and what did you think so in In Me 29:42 growing up like our school didn't have wrestling but I liked I learned that 29:47 John Hughes had originally wrote him as a football player but that was so 29:53 overused that he made him a wrestler instead I really liked that I love that 29:58 n used it within the film when he takes on the bully I love that this this wrestler and and of course sorry I 30:04 already forget the character's name so I apologize J Nelson played the character's name was Bender Benson 30:10 Bender so but we'll just use the actor's name it's so when when Emilio and Jud 30:15 face off with each other to have an actual physical altercation I was actually what I liked about it how realistic it was like yeah this guy's 30:21 actually trained Grappler so if you want to even though he's shorter maybe a little bit smaller and stature but if 30:28 this guy grapples with you and he's trained to do it and he took him down really quickly and he said like is this 30:33 what you want I can keep I'll will humiliate you all day but then of course his character draws the knife and emelo 30:39 is like oh well that's where you're going that's totally different level so I like those really real moments of 30:45 these it's that dangerous feeling in that you know oh he's drawing a knife he's literally bringing a knife to a wrestling fight it's like okay well now 30:52 I can't do that you know it's a but it was a lot of great little moments like that which I again just fantastic 30:58 real life situation with two guys fighting the one guy gets humiliated so goes yeah 31:03 I'm G to now draw a gun on a knife fight type thing he like w okay well now there's a whole different level of violence and the way that he they 31:10 layered humor on top of those situations he you know the way he's you know the 31:16 tough guy what Bender says you know I don't want to go there with you man because I'd kill you then he puts the 31:21 knife in the table and Allison just like off screen we see her pull it up it's just they layer investigate that we 31:29 never like she takes a knife is it ever does he ever realize his knife is gone or I don't know if it was in her bag 31:35 later when she empties her bag but you're right I wonder if that was even scripted that's the other thing was that 31:40 an improv for Alie shetti just to take the knife out of the chair could have been as to your point Ryan there was a 31:47 ton so John Hughes let these guys his his actors you know adlib and a ton of that 31:54 made it into the movie I think it was them flowing around I think she just took the knife and John's like that I like that and just don't re-explore 32:01 where the knife is just it is what it is MH well that's our second person is John 32:06 Bender he's the criminal he's played by Jud Nelson and I did read that his 32:12 clothes his outfit in the movie is what he wore when he auditioned now you probably going to 32:18 talk about it did you read about him and Mr Hughes I did yes yeah have at it well 32:25 I didn't know about this if I knew about it I'd forgot uh wow talk about one of the biggest 32:31 Hollywood riffs in history so on the set Jud who was 24 at 32:38 the time 25 25 okay 25 at the time give or take yeah so 24 and he and Molly 32:46 Ringold was only I she was younger than I thought she was she she was only 16 so she couldn't even work full days so 32:51 there's some like behind the head shots was her standing because she had to go to school so Molly was 16 you know legally 32:59 a minor and Jud would mistreat her in character off like when they're not 33:05 filming he would stay in character and kind of still kind of be a a dick towards Molly and John Hughes was very 33:12 protective of Molly Ringwald as an older gentleman and like this young teenager 33:17 and he as a muse in a way wanted Molly to be protected like he felt very protective of her so he told J hey cool 33:24 your heels man like you don't have to be this way J's like I'm going to be this way and it's took the actor who played the principal to convince Jon to keep 33:31 Jud around despite you know the behavior and as years went on though but sorry 33:37 John was so still put off by he allowed the filming to finish but he hated the whole experience with Jud that he never 33:42 worked with Jud again and like they never reconciled 33:48 ever I that's accurate but so I guess I don't know if this shows more the 33:53 charact character of John like I find his the more I read about John some of his we'll get the malling his treatment 33:59 with her too yeah yeah like and Anthony Michael Hall too like those two they oh 34:05 I missed that one so you tell me tell me about that one I didn't read about that one so I'm is John the problem a little 34:11 bit I mean he was young he was like 30ish but but years go on though I admit 34:19 I made choices what I made choices when I was young that I would not do today of course but if I ever saw so and so and 34:26 I'd be like Oh I'm sorry I'd Die and I've done that actually like that I I was young and stupid and I don't feel 34:31 that way now right and just I'm just surprised after decades there was no man we were just young and there was a crazy 34:37 moment or like you were young like jud's only 24 it's that's young I thought I knew everything I didn't know anything 34:43 at 24 compared to now so yeah it's weird that they never reconciled they held on to it both a bit of an ego probably and 34:49 I mean it's you know like we were talking offline sometimes people just rub you the wrong way and he was like I I just have no desire to work with him 34:55 again but you're right I think it Juds character John Bender as we'll talk 35:03 about there are so many classic memorable lines and on liners and the dialogue in this is just excellent but 35:10 half I would say 75% of what made me laugh was Bender's lines like Jud was 35:15 really good as Bender so okay so you know what's interesting here this is g to be a hot take this is going be a hot 35:22 take I enjoyed his performance the least 35:28 by far interesting yeah and it's weird I don't know it's because you could say oh Ryan 35:33 he's playing his character so well I'm like yeah yeah but I've seen movies with jerks and bullies and stuff I get it one 35:39 of the people that was almost almost cast like if Jud didn't exist as an entity if if if he just never existed 35:47 John kusac was scheduled to play and I really like John and I think he would 35:53 done a great job and Nicholas Cage was actually scheduled to do it as well there's talks so he would have done a great job Nicholas Cage I think Nicholas 36:00 Cage is another good example of somebody who could have done that role of a bit of a but the lovable The Lovable 36:06 troubled at the same time that you can get I never got behind him I just thought oh man you're just irritating I 36:12 found him irritating not enjoyable at all well he's supposed to be but it's hard to explain I know but I yeah I 36:20 think it was his performance I think it was honestly objectively I think it was jud's performance I I think the dialogue 36:26 was great I think the story arc was fine that's old's writing maybe te a little bit maybe he just maybe he kind of saw I 36:33 don't know I think John kusak would have been a better well I mean you're entitled to 36:39 feel that way I guess of course yeah there are things that each one of them does that kind of like the actors 36:45 they're young like they either overdid it or weren't that great but the dialogue that was written for them was 36:51 excellent I do very much I think Jud Nelson emulates that tough guy I mean 36:59 he's like a grown ass man too though like who's buying him as a teenager but yeah but you remember 37:05 the I don't like Nicholas Cage at all like I hate him so I he would have turned me out from this movie okay so 37:11 can we John not Tough Enough John tough but that I would say give him a chance 37:19 to do the role maybe he would have yeah that's true he's a good actor because he's a good he's just Jud really a tough 37:25 guy he's just acting right so I think there's something about jud's delivery nothing about him as an actor 37:31 is bad I just found his delivery you're talking about that over the top I found that was the majority of his character 37:37 was the things I guess I meant like the lines most of the funny lines were his lines 37:44 and he did well he got a lot of funny onliners so star of the show as far as 37:53 maybe maybe there's more Jud than I remembered I was like oh there's a lot of Jud there 37:58 is he's he was really good at delivering the humor and I think maybe you know when he was trying to be more serious 38:04 maybe it was maybe over John the scene where he's talking about okay there's a couple scenes that I didn't maybe that 38:10 really was off-putting and maybe it's a bit of combination the writing and the delivery when he's talking about his 38:16 home life and he's acting his father's part his mother's part and his part reacting the whole like abuse in his 38:21 home I was like okay this is dragging on you know the whole argument you know hey 38:26 Dad Youth and he's doing the voices for his dad his mom and himself and he's reenacting this maybe this abuse that 38:34 took place in his home we're not too too sure if it's because it me that really happened but the point is I found the 38:40 delivery a little bit if I was actually watching this in the library like I think this guy's off his meds like it was a little bit I don't know I think it 38:48 would have been better delivered had it been a toned down recollection not a 38:54 over-the-top animated like I'm talking about something serious and violent but I'm being so kind of silly about it that 39:00 it I don't know I think it would have been a better direction would have been to tell the story but to keep it like 39:06 yeah this did like I don't know anyways I found that part offputting for some reason interesting I mean I can see your 39:12 point I think at that point in the movie We're still easing into the these characters and I think it was purposeful 39:19 that he was so animated because that's what made the because they showed everybody else's reaction to it and 39:25 they're like holy [ __ ] you know and then Claire tells Andrew you shouldn't have said that he's like how did I how was I 39:32 supposed to know this guy was so you know and the meds I mean he probably was needed medication and never fair enough 39:39 yeah and so but let anyone get mad at me because I know I always say things that are usually not what everyone thinks but 39:45 I just no that's whole point well that's just how I felt I'm not trying to cater to the audience but 39:51 however that's a that's probably my only criticism really as I felt he was like I 39:57 said enjoyed him the least doesn't mean I didn't enjoy him at all I worded I enjoyed if I was to rank the 40:03 performances objectively he had a lot of the film to carry and when I read the other casting 40:09 choices my brain went to the alternate universe with oh I kind of think I would like to have seen JN in that role more and then I couldn't get out of it I 40:16 couldn't get out of it that's interesting okay yeah all right there nobody nobody else I would have recast I 40:22 think everyone else is perfectly cast I'm I'm going to get hate for that I know Jud was beloved with that character I understand he had the iconic moment at 40:28 the end that was improv all that stuff I get it it's fantastic but yeah we will talk more about some of the 40:35 casting what ifs a little bit later but just to finalize the the main Cas year so Molly Ringwald as Claire 40:43 sish I didn't know she had a last name I don't think it's ever said but I remember him Claire sish and Ali sheii 40:51 playing Allison Reynolds and then Anthony Michael Paul 40:57 playing the nerd Brian Johnson those are our five 41:03 students all five students were members of The Brat Pack yay and 41:10 apparently you hear about this you guys right the the brat pack what is it where did it come 41:17 from technically an appearance in either The Breakfast Club and or St Elmo's Fire 41:23 is often considered the prerequisites for being a core Rat Pack member and 41:30 there was an article written um David Bloom's New York 41:36 story identified amelo Estes as The Unofficial president of the 41:42 brat pack agre because there was a that he met up with him and they were telling 41:47 stories or something like that the article was written originally it was just going to be about amelo and then 41:54 they got started talking and I think maybe he Jud came and they got to talking and so David Bloom decided that 42:00 to change the content of his story about these these young Hollywood actors so 42:06 yeah I know you like Amelia don't you Young Guns yeah yeah okay I me I I didn't want to step on you this is your 42:12 show I could do a whole I I love I mean I am like a Young 42:17 Guns nerd there almost as much as I am a rocky nerd I kid you not I could talk about I even contemplate I talk about 42:23 doing a western podcast I know I'm still it's like that it's like every director or creator has that Opus they want to do 42:29 but they haven't tackled it because I love young gun so much I want to talk about it if that makes sense and I even 42:35 consider I might just tackle the Young Guns films Allah the way I've done the rocky films I don't I don't know if I 42:40 want to rush it I might want to do a scene by scene discussion of those films like an actual breakdown instead of just 42:46 saying this is a good film you know that's how much I love those films I might just do a Young Guns one in a 42:51 Young Guns 2 two season podcast on the Young Guns franchise because I just love it that much yeah and I could do other 42:58 western films but there's like I love the Western genre but there's so many you could do that podcast for 10 years 43:03 so I might think oh should I just hyper focus it on the films that just you know five films maybe that I really like and 43:08 make it five seasons long So Young Guns one and two Unforgiven Tombstone just off top of my head something like that 43:14 like just the big the five Opus or the Mount Rushmore films in my books that are westerns anyways the point is yes so 43:22 I'm a Young Guns nerd and because that I have this great affinity and love for ailio and I know You could argue again ailio Young Guns 43:29 films are like his in many people's books those are his Rocky films and that this is his Peak character and 43:35 performance which which they are but it was interesting watching The Breakfast Club which came up two years before Young Guns won two to three years 43:41 before seeing some of his mannerisms and the way he was in talking that he really 43:47 accentuated in those films as Billy the Kid so it's kind of cool to see this take off the the cowboy gear and all 43:53 that stuff of course it's just the the way Emil annunciates his word and talks he's got a really great delivery style I 43:58 really like the way he talks I just like the way he annunciates words and his eyes and the intensity that he can have 44:03 and yeah he's I just like him I think he's great and yeah I know he's kind of quiet in Hollywood he directs more now 44:09 than ever but I've always enjoyed great I like it I like a quiet Hollywood I mean just he is out of trouble yeah he 44:15 stays out of trouble as far as I know he stays out of trouble he's I think he dated yeah he dated to me more for a bit that's right I believe that was true and 44:22 Paul Abdul yeah that's right that was a longer one actually was for a while yeah he's a great guy he seems like 44:28 seems like a great guy I haven't heard anything scandalous or crazy about him just a normal human which I like I do 44:36 too which is interesting because his brother is the Act exact opposite for those who might not know 44:42 yes they're might be someone who his brother is Martin Sorry Charlie Sheen and their dad is Martin Sheen so Amelia 44:49 looks so much like a young Martin yeah yeah more than Charlie uh and I I will 44:54 say this too did you hear about the actor who play played uh the janitor the story there Carl the janitor played by 45:01 John capelos is it capos or capos anyway sure go on well they were on the set and 45:09 he made it I forget the exact comma but he made an offhanded comma to the kids like he's an older actor you know so 45:15 he's talking to these younger kids actors and he's hey guys make sure you don't get too wrapped up in your roles 45:20 don't get too emotionally involved in your roles maybe he was seen Jud so maybe he's talked to them as a group or something because Jud was maybe getting 45:26 too wrapped up he goes because you don't want to be like Martin Sheen like on Apocalypse 45:31 Now and he didn't know that Emilio was the son of Martin and Amelia freaked out 45:37 at him said that's my dad and he felt horrible and he and alelia never forgave 45:43 him on the set or anything like that because he of course he's only 22 he's very protective of his dad icon you know 45:48 icon on screen and the same actor who played the janitor met Martin later I think it was on the westwing I think 45:54 during that time yeah and he said I had this weird encounter with your son I know it's kind of funny and Martin just 46:01 laughed it off he said you've been holding on thought it was funny class I agree class yeah he's like oh this is my 46:06 son this is AEL being little hotheaded you're fine you're fine but yeah so but the poor guy carried that forever I know 46:13 I read that and I thought isn't that odd though because they look so similar I 46:18 mean I guess the names are different so maybe he wouldn't know internet back then and that's why he changed his name 46:23 I think em amilio did change his name to to keep I think I think there's I don't know the exact reasons I think it was 46:29 his mother Martin Sheen Sheen is a stage name that's right and then Charlie just took his dad's stage name but Estes is 46:37 the is actually the family name it sounds great too Estes it does it does I 46:42 like it yeah I have nothing bad to say about alilio I never will you won't get it out of me I loved his performance I 46:48 thought he was great I me it was just jealous that Jud got more lines I was like come on give morio but he did a great job I I loved it yeah except for 46:54 the one scene that even John Hugh says he wish he could take out you know that scene I'm talking about where the glass 47:00 breaks when he yells that dance that that dance sequence there was there's 47:06 some Oddities in the dance like when the glass the glass didn't break I 47:12 just chalk it up to it's in his imagination that's that's what I yeah it was because he was high so the the glass 47:18 breaks for the audience but it's the point of view of the character that's how I work around that okay that's a good I like it that's a good way to 47:25 never talked about again there's no mess they were not walking on it it's never spoken of I think it's just in his mind 47:31 he's dancing so incredibly and he's yelling and dancing so incredibly well that the glass breaks but it doesn't 47:36 break just in his mind I thought it was odd that they made him so amped up pot does not make you 47:44 amped up like that he was it was like he was doing speed like an uper of down 47:49 well we don't know was this pot lace was something we don't know well why would he be the only one that got anyway I 47:58 I love it I know I love it when PO is Miss yeah I could be wrong I'm not a pot 48:03 coniss even though I'm legally allowed to be if you can believe it even in the Canadian military we are allowed to have pot oh even military folks okay we it's 48:11 the same rules of alcohol you just can't come to work high if you're oh well du yeah it's the same yeah that that yeah 48:17 but but it's legal in in it's not legal in the American Military still so they actually had like pot designated smoking 48:23 areas for the recruits so when you're on a break and you're not working it's a weekend you're allowed to smoke 48:29 marijuana I mean it's the same I mean you're it's just the same as drinking same as having a beer you know when 48:35 you're not on duty or whatever yeah so speaking of John capos or capelos God I 48:40 wish I knew I should have looked it up who knows how this is pronounced at any rate he plays Carl the janitor and he 48:47 has over 200 credits so he's in a ton of stuff some notable recent stuff yeah 48:52 he's he is great the Umbrella Academy TV series and the shape of water movie is some more recent stuff and then we'll 48:59 get into some roles that a lot of these actors have have in common together but 49:05 did you know that he's Canadian no I missed that oh wow good for him he's born in h London 49:12 Ontario and last but not least we have Paul gleon who plays Richard Vernon the principal which we will get 49:21 or is he what what is he we'll get to that in a second but you all probably know Paul gleon most probably from this 49:27 but he was also in Trading Spaces and Arthur and then he reprised his role as Vernon in 2001's Not Another Teen 49:38 Movie really that's reprised his role that's funny Molly Ringwald was in 49:44 it too I believe that was 24 years ago what is going on I don't know they can 49:49 make another not another not another team movie at this point like it's the the 2000s version of a team 49:56 movie 85 to 2001's only 16 years am I get my math right 50:02 there there's more time has passed between that we're making fun of te movies from the 80s like eight years 50:09 more has passed since that movie came out do you ever get weirded out by that kind of thing I do we talked about it 50:16 the other day on the rocky show to me 2005 is like yesterday but that's 20 50:22 years ago here's another one that I get I love think of a cover song that you enjoyed in your youth like for example 50:27 I'll just pick an easy one Errol Smith covered come together in '87 on their Permanent Vacation album they covered 50:33 the Beatles come so when I was listen to that when I was 12 13 years old and list yeah the Beatles that old band The Beatles And of course ER erith is 50:40 current rock and roll band you know they're covering the Beatles how cool of them to cover the Beatles yeah that's such an old song for them to cover it 50:46 sounds old it's an old song now more time has passed by far since the cover 50:51 of the beat like from now to when that album came out almost 40 years you know 50:57 you know what I'm getting that like it's like the covers of songs that were covers of old songs back when we were 51:03 young are now twice as old the covers are twice as old now as when they were covering the song I I can't I think that 51:10 the Advent of the internet was such a Line in the Sand I think so I think 51:17 so because so much did change from the 60s to the 80s yes 20 years it was it 51:24 was like 50 years the 60 the 70 we can we talked about I but it Bears repeat especially on a show called the retroid 51:31 meaning you can't do it like in 40 years they're not going to do a podcast on the 51:36 2010s no there's something identity of the about it the 50s 60s 70s and 80s and 51:45 even 90s there's something special about those four to five decade run where every decade had an identity of music TV 51:52 film cartoons books clothes 100% the latter half of the 20th century was just 52:00 wild in so many ways and then now it's like if I wore an outfit in 52:05 2025 and went back to 2001 wearing the same outfit be like hi not like where 52:11 did you get those futurs to closeth but if I wore bell bottoms but if I wore bell bottoms in ' 89 when they only wore 52:19 them 10 years previous people be like what are you doing weing about are you insane well one of the I will say one 52:25 thing that's different about your analogy is that you're not 52:30 attempting to wear trendy clothes now like if you were to wear what is considered trendy now you know meaning 52:37 bell bottoms not everybody wore bell bottoms they were the trendy every I did I did when I was a kid I wore bell 52:43 bottoms it was a that like that was a symbol of the 70s was bell bottoms like in the 80s I see yeah like just I'm 52:50 picturing like this very 70s Hipp stuff this the common kid wor 52:56 bot of bell bottoms was the pants you wor if you were if I wore bell bottoms 53:01 in fifth or sixth grade I would be laugh out of school you're 53:08 right it's interesting that you say that because for women your jeans again unless you're trying to be trendy and 53:14 you know 15 years ago you started wearing skinny skinny jeans or something oh my gosh but for women the jeans 53:21 really do still change Trend wise skinny 53:26 flare big pants you know there's different ones that you it's I think it's more pronounced now for women yeah 53:35 but I just find it f There's real identities There's real identities and I just don't know what are kids today 53:40 going to say oh you remember back of the 20110 what nope not defining it's not yeah I 53:50 agree it is I adored the music in The Breakfast Club and I noted several 53:55 instances where it really elevated the either the emotion or what we were supposed to get from it aside 54:02 from it just fun the intro yeah right away you're just like oh here we go 80s 54:07 Simple Minds yeah so Keith fory was the guy who did the music he's an English 54:14 pop musician and record producer he produced for Billy Idol and then he co-wrote flash dances What a Feeling 54:21 songs for Beverly H cop Ghostbusters and of course that simple Mind song 54:27 don't you forget about me it was originally offered to them and they declined it yeah did you read about yeah 54:33 and then several other people Brian Ferry Billy Idol several other artists passed the song and then Simple Minds 54:40 reconsidered and I would I would bet quite a bit of money that they're really glad they reconsidered because it is no 54:46 it's known it's The Breakfast Club song yeah oh yeah they're they're happy cashing those checks don't you worry 54:52 they're fine about the royalties don't you don't worry about them and the part at the end there you 54:59 probably read that too when he's going the singer was like I'm sick of the song and so he didn't want to sing 55:06 lyrics or anything so he just made it he he tried to sabotage the song by Laing at the end it turns out he cared so 55:13 little about it that he was just like la la la la yeah but it turns out it's like that's the favorite part of the song for 55:19 people is the outro I kind of thought maybe it had won more Awards the only award that that 55:26 it won was the MTV movie and TV Awards and not until 2005 so that would have what what was 55:32 that 20 years later 20 years later 20 years later silver silver bucket of Excellence award did you know that the 55:39 Breakfast Club and Rocky have something in common oh did I do you know where I'm 55:46 going with this Ryan can can you give me a hint can I can I get a hint budget it gives it away the budget of the movie 55:52 okay I I know what the budget is you're right this crazy little budget it's insane a million dollars which is even crazier 56:00 because in theory Rocky had a bigger budget wasn't it about a million wasn't it even less than oh because it was in 56:08 1970 yeah in the 70s you're right you're right so had a lower budget in lower 56:14 budget it does make sense though because there's only seven characters if you don't count the parents and stuff it's 56:21 all in one place they're basically it's just dialogue there's not like special effects or 56:27 you know I'm sure it's been done so I I I'm saying something I'm sure you're like of course Ryan this has been done 56:32 but this is I'm sure this has been done School College Plays drama class this must have been revamped for because this 56:39 is a stage play this whole thing is a stage play he wrote it as a stage yeah you're right he he wrote it as oh he wrote it that way okay there yeah okay 56:46 he thought it would be easier for them and these were like you know there's no big names at the time they were upand 56:51 cominging actors so they didn't have to pay them that much too sure yeah well she was only 16 Molly herself and so was 56:58 Anthony oh I want to say abouton I want to say about Anthony Michael Hall he I forgot he he really did give a 57:04 surprisingly great performance you know sometimes when you play the nerdy kid or whatever I'm the comedy like he's the 57:10 comedy relief so to speak character he did a great job as a as the nerd sure 57:15 someone who's trying very hard it feels like he doesn't belong there or whatever but then when he exposed himself in that round circle at the end about his own 57:22 pressures he goes wa you don't think I have pressure you don't think I have I love that and his cry was a little bit 57:27 off the mark but that's fine he's a young actor but yeah that kind of got to me a little bit I was like oh that but 57:33 aside from that I agree with you but you know you could argue too teenage boys are are terrible criers we're really bad 57:40 at it so if you want to get down to he he acted the part meaning like no teenage boy cries properly so it was 57:47 actually semi acccurate of somebody who's awkward and weird about crying and he did a great job and Stanley kubri of 57:53 course noticed his I should say of course but Stanley cu noticed and appreciated Anthony's acting 57:59 in this film and and I feel the same way it was actually a very strong performance probably the strongest of the cast I think Anthony's performance 58:05 really and Stanley curi wanted to get him for Full Metal Jacket that's right Anthony Michael 58:12 turned it down even after some negotiations and I don't know what his reasons were but boy Matthew mí played 58:19 the character that he turned down in that film and he did a great job Matthew did but boy I wonder if Anthony Michael 58:25 Hall at any Point go oh shoot I could have been a full metal jacket so I don't know well I he probably did later 58:31 because there was a point and this this gets into the discussion about both he and Molly Ringwald after a certain point 58:37 so they did a number of these teen movies for John Hughes and John considered those two specifically as his 58:43 Muses and I think he he definitely wanted Molly in some kind of wonderful 58:49 and Anthony Michael Hall for maybe that movie too I can't remember and they were like we don't want to keep doing the 58:54 same thing yeah and you know he took it really personally the John that's the John the 59:00 John story again yeah sorry go ahead please no you're right you're absolutely right he you 59:07 know you can't really blame them you wouldn't want to keep doing the same thing where I was going with that is 59:13 that at that time Anthony Michael Hall probably was kicking himself because he could have gotten out of that you know 59:20 teen movie is that we that's why he didn't take it I wonder if that's one of the re maybe he still felt he had a foot one cuz once he goes through that door 59:26 of a full metal Jack of film he's not going back to what he considers mov you're right yeah I also heard it could 59:32 have been a time thing too with Stanley if you s sign on for stany you're done for a year to a year and a half almost 59:38 two years like you're you're on his oh that's that's a big commitment for a 59:45 teenager yeah you know yeah now that folks is a pretty significant 59:51 contributing factor to why John Hughes transitioned from making these teen 59:58 movies to more familyfriendly kid movies did you know that he lost his he was 1:00:04 really upset by that oh really he wanted his own Mia Pharaoh he 1:00:10 wanted his own m a pharaoh is what it was I guess I guess I wonder if there was I wonder if there was some sort of 1:00:16 crush Factor like let's be honest I wonder and I don't mean anything inappropriate or un towards but there's 1:00:21 got to be some sort of because that's what I think if I'm speaking of turn here I think it wasn't me a phoh used to Woody was that the whole 1:00:28 idea yeah I think so you had mentioned ages I did find the 1:00:33 ages really interesting so you're right Molly was almost 17 she like Turned 17 1:00:39 while they were filming and Anthony was 16 and they I guess started dating a little bit after filming this who they 1:00:46 Anthony and uh Molly I me because they were both act they were the only actual teenagers in 1:00:53 the movie emelo and Ally were both 23 23 okay yeah Jud was 25 now get this I what 1:01:04 okay on that topic you have a 25-year-old and a 16-year-old he literally Jud next to Anthony he looks 1:01:11 like he could be his dad there's so much maturity difference between a 25-year-old man and Jud was like a man 1:01:18 you know like not John he's always had a baby face for years he might have been a better pick yeah you're right I'm G yeah 1:01:26 you he does have a baby face so John capos who played Carl the janitor even 1:01:33 though he's balding he was only three years older than Jud Nelson he was 28 he was 28 yes meaning he's closer in age 1:01:42 he's closer in age to like amelo and J and Ally than than than the five 1:01:48 characters playing teenagers bless his heart bless his poor heart plus his balding heart it's unfortunate I mean he 1:01:55 does look youth like when they show his face he he's kind of a handsome man if he had oh yeah he was F now was he 1:02:01 actually the biological father of Anthony Michael Hall's character I got confused was that his or was was his 1:02:08 stepdad I'm so conf no they're not related at all well well oh we'll get to that they're not related at all why 1:02:15 dumb because he says he know they know each other he's like oh hey when when 1:02:21 Carl comes in and he's like oh hey Brian he's like this your dad work here 1:02:26 meaning what what we maybe got from that is oh your dad maybe works here and that's how you know him your dad might 1:02:32 be a teacher here I just the way I watched it I just my brain just went oh your that's your dad he works here and 1:02:39 I'll see you later type talk and I got confused by all that I'm sorry okay no but but you're probably not alone there 1:02:47 was a cutscene about why Brian is in detention was the flare gun that went 1:02:53 off in his locker yeah and and there was a cut scene where Carl was involved in like 1:02:59 cleaning it up or or like he he knew about like that that's how they know each other is because of the the flare gun 1:03:06 and the locker thing yeah okay but that scene was 1:03:11 kind okay fair enough fair enough so these the five the the five teenagers in 1:03:17 this movie in 1985 this movie comes out in 1985 in 1:03:22 February 40 years ago they all play high school stud students literally 6 months 1:03:27 later in August of 1985 s Elmo fire comes out and they're 1:03:33 all in that too or not all of them I should say Emilio Estes Jud Nelson and Aly Shi not all of them but that's right 1:03:39 that's right yeah so they're in their 20s yeah yeah because they play college graduates like right out of college in 1:03:46 sto's Fire and interestingly enough John Hughes recommended all three of them 1:03:52 including Jud Nelson for their roles so I don't know if he did that 1:03:59 before you know he had a bad time with Jed yeah good point yeah I don't 1:04:05 know okay bouncing back to the budget million dollars how much do you think this made worldwide 1:04:13 you maybe saw well actually I saw the well I saw the 1 million but I didn't put that to memory the what it made but I think it may well maybe I'm cheating I 1:04:20 think it was like 85 million or something like that 55.5 so that's a pretty decent return eh 1:04:28 it's amazing return that's amazing I'd give a million dollars for 55 in 1:04:35 return 100% yep yeah did you ever get detention in school oh yes are you 1:04:43 kidding did you yo yeah I was here's yes I got detention but I was the that's 1:04:49 what I mean so right but you said you were you know you tried to be I was a class clown that's what I got attention 1:04:55 for for for disturbing the class it was never for beating anyone up or stealing or starting fires I always like to make 1:05:02 the the students laugh so I tell jokes I would tell jokes that maybe weren't very politically correct even then but I 1:05:09 liked a good laugh I loved making my classmates left and so or I just like talking to my neighbor I don't have ADHD 1:05:16 but I get bored I know it sounds maybe different but it's different like I get bored and so I'm I'm listening to the 1:05:22 teacher talk and blather on for eight hour eight hours a day ktie and so I'm just like oh my gosh stop talking maybe 1:05:28 you were just too advanced for your classes you know that's what they say a lot of kids who get in trouble for stuff like that it's like they're not being 1:05:33 challenged enough I I I'm not saying I'm smart but I never felt like yeah I never 1:05:38 felt challenged in the sense of yeah like I was just like yeah I'll study this later I never did homework but I still got good grades so I was just that 1:05:45 kind of I just like to have I like to have fun though like I just enjoyed the human interaction of the world and of my 1:05:50 friends but so I tell jokes and things like that but it wasn't like every day all day like I wasn't like [ __ ] about 1:05:56 it like I was I was self-aware that I knew I couldn't keep doing this but every now and then a joke was too good not to say something like I was saying 1:06:03 that's what she said jokes before you know before the office yeah like I was doing that kind of humor even back this 1:06:09 very it's very like Innocent but enough like I mean I I had a joke I'll tell you off eror that I can't even say I'll tell 1:06:15 you after remind me okay um that that comes to mind it was the first day of grade n social studies it was Mr 1:06:21 sheffer's class and he had already had me for grade eight social so he knew me 1:06:26 and he I I was fooling around or whatever talking he goes Cong I'll never forget congratulations Ryan you're the 1:06:33 first student I've ever sent to the principal's office on the first day of school and I'm like yes as I I clapped 1:06:39 as I walked out now was your when was your detention 1:06:46 was it on a Saturday Okay so that's the other thing I want to talk about it was after school and because I love how this 1:06:51 teacher in the yeah in the movie I want to give you next Saturday I'm going to you're going to spend Saturday and I'm like dude you're just torturing yourself 1:06:57 don't you want a weekend I I love how the teacher is bored or the principal whatever like he's bored out of his mind 1:07:03 too like you're actually dist torturing yourself like you're actually like that's what go ahead please there's an 1:07:08 assumption that there'd be there is detention every Saturday anyway some if it's not Bender it's someone else in 1:07:15 there available yeah I guess they can have rotating like stud 1:07:21 staff real school they would rotate teachers that's what they did for me knew this I got a different teacher 1:07:26 every time so I'd hey welcome back Mr reulin as I would go to detention it was R I'll never forget it was room 116 in 1:07:33 my oh my God that's wild so and I then then Katie 1:07:40 I was the only kid that ever got kicked out of detention I was driving the teachers so crazy with my talking and 1:07:48 humor and jokes talking to the other kids in detention she says I can't deal with you just go home so I got kicked 1:07:54 out of detention they didn't just give you more detentions like Vernon did they said I 1:08:00 got you Natural Born life it wasn't like they didn't they didn't stack it was always one it was always one punishment 1:08:07 one detention it was kind of like so I would have to go to detention after school and yeah it was like and my my 1:08:13 friend who I'm still best friends with now I run that Channel with he would come he would come up to me after school 1:08:18 this is how bad it got he am I walking home with you today or do you have to stay or do you 1:08:24 have to stay with the attention cuz he wasn't blessed me he wasn't going to wait for me cuz it's like a half hour 45 minutes or whatever extra so I would 1:08:31 just sit in class I would just do my homework or write in my notebook or draw characters and Comics or read a book and 1:08:37 I didn't care ours was also after school so a couple things with that one is the 1:08:45 real punishment would be you couldn't get detention because it's after school and then that would make you late for 1:08:51 whatever sport practice because at our school sport practice was that did affect immediately following I got in 1:08:57 trouble for that my I was more disappointed I disappointed my coach I played rugby so that did happen where I'd come late to rugby there still be 1:09:04 going on you get punishment probably at rugby practice too did you have to run extra or something no I was just I was 1:09:10 one of the better players we didn't have a great team but I was a pretty I was always a pretty big teenager so it was kind of like I just showed up late my 1:09:18 rugby coach Mr Mr Chef field rest in peace he was a sweetheart of a guy 1:09:23 anyways he would just roll his eyes at me he had oh we would get punished more you'd have to run more extra lines or 1:09:30 laps or whatever um but then and and B you like that one one one then B yeah I 1:09:38 had never heard of Saturday detention is this a thing please anyone out there the states 1:09:44 you're the states I thought it was maybe a States thing because I'm Canadian it wasn't for I mean granted again I went 1:09:49 to a Catholic school but I really I'm very curious if Saturday detention exists anywhere 1:09:55 please let again I feel like I I feel like you're punishing the staff as well and the parents driving 1:10:02 you to school for o that really sucks I think it's just it's a 9 hour day it's longer than a school day that's that's 1:10:09 the part I found insane I don't even know if that's legal it was like 7:30 to 1:10:14 or 7 to 4 breakfast to lunch sorry breakfast to supper essentially yeah 1:10:19 MH yeah I mean growing up so this is n this came out in 1985 but I probably didn't see it until 1:10:26 how you know however many years it took for it to come on TV and we had a taped 1:10:31 version so I grew up watching the made the edited for TV version so much so 1:10:38 that when I finally saw the real version I was like oh he says for example the 1:10:44 the there's some extra footage in the edited for TV version oh there because 1:10:50 they cut had to cut so much else out there's some extra footage in that version and then I watch the real 1:10:55 version I'm like wait where's that scene that's cut out for example when they collect money um to go get sodas and 1:11:04 Brian thinks when uh Bender reaches his hand out he thinks he wants a slap like a high five or something and then he is 1:11:11 embarrassed and he gets him money and there's a few other things like that but also when Bender says [ __ ] you after 1:11:19 they have that whole I got you for your natural born life yeah two months the 1:11:24 edited for TV version says filled you and I grew up watching that version 1:11:31 filled you filled with what that's even more I know I never I don't know this is 1:11:37 what I'm saying I grew up so I I Pro I and there were so many things that I didn't understand because I wasn't a 1:11:44 teenager I was I was like a seven-year-old watching this yeah that's 1:11:49 funny totally didn't understand I think I've only seen the theatrical I never saw this on TV that I can remember I see 1:11:55 that I'm sure flipped through it but like I I think I've only fully watched this now three times my whole life it's 1:12:00 not like it's a saw when it first came out saw it again out of curiosity and saw it for the show for this podcast 1:12:06 yeah oh wow that I that's that's why it hit hit hard this time as a as a as a 1:12:13 fuller grown adult I haven't Pro that's I probably haven't seen this in 25 years really yeah I watched this at 1:12:20 least once a year I think I've seen this movie 50 times at least okay well I I 1:12:26 love it let me be clear my one Chris about Jud that's what I mean that's why I have I I felt it jarring after maybe 1:12:32 25 years not seen the film oh I don't know how much I like that performance that's all after 25 years of watching films and other performances it struck 1:12:39 me objectively speaking if I was the director I might have told him to tone it down I might have approached that 1:12:44 part differently that's all was there any particular characters Arc that you 1:12:51 related to most oh a good question I hate when people say that's a good question you're 1:12:57 just trying to collect your how they started the movie versus how they ended you know well I know that I because I've 1:13:03 seen it before and I know the storyline enough to know that yes they all kind of change their views there they'll uh 1:13:09 understand each other better and I think what I found interesting and the most heartbreaking of the film and might not 1:13:15 really be answering your question but the Arc of all the characters that was mentioned by them was like oh I will not 1:13:22 ignore you in the hallways I will not I promise you I will not and we never see 1:13:27 the outcome of those promises but having gone through high school and we do this 1:13:33 we promised so much when we're young and we just we're so romantic about our promises when we're young I guarantee 1:13:39 you they went back to normal that they they they fell back into the tropes again of survival in the hallways you 1:13:46 know they go back to their tribe as they would say and not that they were mean to 1:13:51 each other there might have been a passing glance or a knowing nod in the hallway but how I'll never ignore you in 1:13:56 the hallway again and stuff like that well they don't actually say that what's interesting is they S I swear I thought 1:14:02 they said I'll never ignore you am I missing the shoot well so so in the 1:14:08 circle we establish that Claire and Andy would both ignore and even Bender 1:14:15 they're like you would ignore us she's like yeah I would I would say hi I would 1:14:21 be nice to your face and as soon as you walked off I would you know make fun of you so my friends didn't think I really liked you and then but they continue to 1:14:29 develop the friendship over the time and so we make an assumption plus then there there's some coupledom right there's two 1:14:36 couples now well Anthony said I would never do that to you me and Allison are 1:14:41 better people than you because I would never do that to you and Claire says that's because you look up to us oh 1:14:47 that's right my bad okay I thought I was taking it as okay I misinterpret the two different no it's just that the the 1:14:53 Allison doesn't have friends and Brian's friends are you know they're not the 1:14:58 popular kids and so but then you know the rest of the movie we see them become 1:15:04 closer and better friends and so there's an assumption especially considering that 1:15:09 Claire and Bender K you know they they get together and so do 1:15:15 Alo I always do this Andrew and Alison I 1:15:20 okay so what I'll say about the funny enough my least favorite transition maybe this better answered your question I apologize to our dear listeners I 1:15:26 misunderstood the I'll never ignore you in the hallway talk I thought that was a future statement I got you I got yeah I 1:15:31 remember I liked Ali Sheet's character better I didn't like her dress her makeover was terrible I liked it better 1:15:38 oh you didn't think she looked beautiful well I thought she really did look pretty I liked I would have dated the uh 1:15:45 the other version better I I was more attracted in a funny way to the the bangs in her face now I know you 1:15:53 couldn't see her face well a I know it's it's this might have been the film that started that Trope right of the 80s you 1:15:59 know yeah take off the glasses do her hair now she's pretty she's been there the whole time it did start that but 1:16:05 yeah it really more of it and that's what Andrew says he's like oh I can see your face now like I saw face but I saw 1:16:13 the face throughout the movie I I she's there I kind of liked her look better than the the the pretty the pretty and 1:16:20 pink look did nothing for me I don't know but that's just funny no I mean I 1:16:26 guess um I guess I'll go back to Anthony I just really like that moment again in that Circle when he broke down and 1:16:32 talked about how he feels pressure too I think that was a great Arc that we see even though he's succeeding because you 1:16:38 know we saw jud's character be like oh your this is your family oh he's such a great kid he's such a great kid don't we 1:16:43 have a great kid hugs and kisses the husband and wife and you know he's criticizing the stable home ironically like that's a bad thing which IID argue 1:16:49 it's not a bad thing but the kid is still says no I still have pressure and undo pressure and then we get to the 1:16:55 suicide talk which is like whoa this is none of these guys that you none of these other characters talked about ever 1:17:00 taking their own life but here we have the one person everyone thinks oh his home life is great all this stuff he's smart in class but he has so much 1:17:06 pressure and expectations ironically though they're good expectations he's feeling like he can't 1:17:11 measure up that if I don't succeed I'm better off dead and that's obviously the wrong message too that he's getting from 1:17:18 his parents so it's a fascinating study really it is and again the movie 1:17:24 balances like that's heavy [ __ ] and then they balance it with humor of the flare 1:17:29 gun and ironically that would kill you I wondered no I'm telling you right 1:17:35 now you should yes and I thought I I get it it's a flare gun they should have said something like it was a pellet 1:17:41 gun or something like a potato gun or something like that that would have been 1:17:47 more humorous because you can't kill yourself with a potato gun it would sting and bleed and embed in your skin 1:17:52 sure but it wouldn't I don't even know what a potato gun is I've never shot oh it shoots potato pellets like a like an 1:17:58 air BB gun it shoots potato pellets this potato yeah you would actually buy you 1:18:03 actually get a potato shove the muzzle of the handgun into the potato crunch it 1:18:09 around and then you shoot the potato pellet out of the gun never even heard of this that's hilarious anyways so 1:18:15 flare gun to the head do not do that folks it will if it doesn't kill you it'll burn your face quite a bit it's 1:18:21 going to it's the damage is I would I would not recommend so he got detention for that weird which 1:18:28 is weird you should get mental health heal exactly but I think it was because it it ended up like damaging school 1:18:33 property because it showed his like burned out locker and he got detention for that sure 1:18:40 Andrews I thought watching it now like in especially how he describes him 1:18:46 torturing this kid this ha he that's like straight up assault wouldn't that land you in prison and not detention 1:18:53 Andrew's reason for being in detention for for what for the ti up the bum bum 1:18:59 mhm yeah cuz he said pieces of skin came off with the hair yeah a little yeah sure probably not as much as he was 1:19:05 saying cuz just is like a waxing with duct tape I guess but no jail no I I'll 1:19:11 say what here's but that's like an assault isn't it yeah so the you're right this is where our 2025 glasses are 1:19:17 looking at 85 Behavior hazy the sports was common place it was never criminal 1:19:22 back then it is now and they've really M well I say that but I I don't want to speak out of ter but I would dare say I 1:19:28 think hazing still happens it still happens yeah hazing in sports especially male Sports in all honesty is a real 1:19:35 thing there's many stories go to Reddit go anywhere it's a real thing and boys 1:19:40 are brutal with each other so fair point Fair 1:19:46 Point now originally there was supposed to be three girls and three boys so what 1:19:51 stereotype do you feel like was missing is there one that you can think of that you would add great question kind of 1:19:57 wish you not I wish you asked me earlier because that's a great again that's a great question let me let me delay the 1:20:03 answer by say that's a great question oh that's a we've got we got the jock the popular girl mentally so what would be 1:20:10 Anthony's girl so to speak what would be the 1:20:16 right you could almost argue for him theater kid theater kid maybe yeah but a 1:20:22 theater kid and a nerd would get along it's kind of a nerd no I know but they're different he's in the physics Club physics club I'm just saying I'm 1:20:30 trying to think too what stereo type of high school was not 1:20:38 represented yeah I'm saying theater kid you guys out there not bad what stereotypes are we missing because there 1:20:44 was supposed to be a third person or a third girl I mean you could 1:20:50 have the one foreign student there you go the foreign exchange student speaking of 16 Candles yeah yeah 1:20:56 yeah I don't know yeah interesting that's a good question let us know folks yeah uh okay let's talk onliners 1:21:04 let's talk the Epic dialogue what are some things like 1:21:10 I laughed out loud in a few places or just memorable lines what do you what do you 1:21:16 recall you're gonna have to Le this one I don't I don't have any to memory to be honest with you but go ahead and start 1:21:21 and I'll so one of the things that I cuz it was so 80s cuz I can remember butt face as an insult cracked 1:21:30 me up see I knew you to trigger my brain when he said eat my 1:21:36 shorts that started with that I don't know if that was ever said before I wonder if that term on film media was 1:21:44 said in a because of course that was attributed to who later on Bart Simpson 1:21:50 right so because I did research for the trivia questions for all of the time capsule segments okay eat my shorts did 1:21:58 become popularized in the mid 80s as a name yes so Bart though but I would say 1:22:03 if you were to ask me before this movie rewatch right like I said it's been a while Ryan who popularize the term eat 1:22:12 my shorts I would have answered right away Bart Simpson sure as a character but it yeah like in I'm saying is this is a big film it's 1:22:20 iconic film through the decades so even before Simpsons came out I think it was 89 that's I'm getting at so I'm wondering had this not been said in this 1:22:28 film would B Simpson be saying eat my shorts in the animation series I'm just curious what the carry over would have 1:22:34 been that's good question yeah that's that's a good question there are just so 1:22:40 many memorable lines and on liners from this movie that that one maybe didn't stand out as much but I laughed out loud 1:22:47 at butt face I laughed out loud at uh dick uh Rich excuse me Rich will milk be 1:22:54 made available to us I love like that Brian saying he has a girlfriend that 1:22:59 lives in Canada yeah I yeah that's like a Trope though in 1:23:05 like dorky American kids trying to claim that they you know aren't a virgin 1:23:13 they're like oh I have a girlfriend she lives in Canada she lives in Japan yeah yeah the line when Andrew ask what do 1:23:20 you need a fake ID for and he says so I can vote that was an m Pro he ADB that 1:23:25 yeah that's a great ADB by the way cuz it totally fits his character shows that he's sing like his character it made him 1:23:31 it made him 68 instead of 18 yeah I love that uh slip her the hot beef 1:23:39 injection I remember not understanding what that meant as a kid I was like what 1:23:44 that's I don't get it it's a sandwich they say No Rest Home love that 1:23:51 one and when they're talking about the virginity and Bender says to brianw Brian it 1:23:57 doesn't sound like you're doing any business then when they're having lunch 1:24:02 oh we have to have a discussion about the lunch Bender slaps uh Brian's hand out of the way when he's like getting 1:24:08 his stuff out of the bag and like looking at what are we having for lunch today he slaps his hand when he was 1:24:14 looking at the apple juice and he says I can 1:24:20 read without trigonometry there'd be no engineering without l there'd be no light I like these are 1:24:27 again half of those are it's insane yeah a lot like yeah a lot of the strong wies 1:24:33 again my least favorite doesn't I enjoyed he was great he was great for 1:24:39 the record he was great but it was just I found myself cringing a little bit more than I thought I was going to some 1:24:46 of the delivery of some of the scenes there you go that's Vernon says in this 1:24:51 that he makes $31,000 a year oh yes I did the math on 1:24:57 this for America like here that's 92 about 1:25:03 $992,000 yeah so is he the principal or the vice 1:25:08 principal or is he a teacher it's a pretty good way for a 1:25:14 teacher it is now I agree I agree I I think so I was reading there's some 1:25:21 controversy about this I had always thought he had to either be the principal or the vice principal and then 1:25:26 there's been some talk about that he's not that he's actually just a teacher and that there's some evidence that 1:25:33 points to that when he says I've been teaching for 22 years that his office is 1:25:38 adjacent to the hallway he has a girly calendar on the wall principals wouldn't spend their Saturdays in detention class 1:25:45 he would you know so Vice access to the confidential there's also senior staff there's also senior staff it's not like 1:25:52 he could be a senior faculty member it's not like it's like like it's just teacher Vice pres princial he could be any he could be a a School faculty of 1:25:59 some sort member some sort of senior staff member the bosses of the teachers let's say or something like that so who 1:26:05 knows I would say he's not in this 22 years teaching he's just saying this is how long he's been in the business or 1:26:10 how long he taught before you got the the job the it's like saying I'm 22 years in the military right now actually 1:26:15 I'm 20 but I've done different jobs in the military I've done different things so he's just blanket State me I've been 1:26:21 in the school system for 22 years so there there was some talk about him being a teacher but I am 100% convinced 1:26:29 that he had to be vice principal or principal yeah one he has an office I don't think just regular teachers have 1:26:36 offices no they usually make their classroom as their offices right where they teach as they have their desk and 1:26:41 everything yeah yeah yeah and then Vernon was in charge of Saturday detention I don't know this to be true 1:26:48 but some say in an American High School the vice principal is usually the school's disciplinarian yeah this would 1:26:54 explain his unpopularity with the students he has access to confidential files which is something Administration 1:27:01 I know so that was that was evidence both ways but here's the kicker for me 1:27:07 Andrew's offense when they're in the circle Andrew says oh yeah something 1:27:12 about he got in trouble for it and then when they sent me to Vernon's office so 1:27:18 they wouldn't send you to a teach I'm board I think I think this is not to me 1:27:23 it's not even a question he's Vice or principal but the only scene I always assume that too the scene that threw me 1:27:30 off was when the janer was calling out out for going through confidential files so my question 1:27:36 is if the principal or vice principal can't look at these files then who 1:27:41 can why do they school maybe it was just he shouldn't be 1:27:48 hoking around doesn't no no it like it doesn't make sense like confidential just means yes this a students history 1:27:55 it's their history it's their resume of schooling and behavior so if the teacher 1:28:01 sorry if the principal Endor vice principal doesn't have authorization to look who who in the school would it 1:28:07 wouldn't just be the math teacher or the gym teacher the person that should have overall access to the students history 1:28:15 would be especially the people that are there to discipline them on the weekend I should know more about them I should 1:28:21 know what I'm dealing with in fact looking up he was doing doing it for nefarious reasons but if I was there and 1:28:27 I wasn't a disciplinary person I would love to know in fact when I taught basic training we had access to their history 1:28:33 like the students or the civilians before they they wrote a resume on themselves and I would read them 1:28:38 whatever they wanted to share it was for us to read because I wanted to know I would treat people differently knowing 1:28:45 some of their background they lost a parent let's say or or they had a member in the military so you have all these different backgrounds of like what are 1:28:50 they bringing to the table as a new recruit so so I don't get why the 1:28:56 janitor was calling him out for looking at files when if it's not him then that would be the only argument that he's 1:29:01 just an average quote-unquote teacher that he shouldn't be looking through confidential files well I think I think there's a a slight distinction I assumed 1:29:10 because he says Oh Mr tyranny mental health issues so I think he was looking at the teachers files because he said oh 1:29:17 Mr he was looking at Mr Tyne student finals it's a file cabinet but he specifically says Oh Mr tyy history of 1:29:24 mental illness and but that you know you could argue that he refers to the students as oh yeah all the time mrul I 1:29:32 get that all the time when I was a kid oh Mr way so it's just again but again 1:29:38 if it's not him who's allowed to if it's not the principal Vice maybe it's just the principal maybe it's just the 1:29:43 principal and then that's why the vice principal but that doesn't if you're Vice you you have you have the same access to the principal in their absence 1:29:50 I think Carl was just calling him out because he was up to no good maybe yeah well that's what it was I know but you 1:29:55 know you know I love to get in the weeds of this stuff I love it because it's written for a reason that's why I do it 1:30:00 because it's the author of the movie wrote this and filmed it for a reason so 1:30:06 I want to know why and if it doesn't make sense why didn't you catch it we just did in five minutes how come you 1:30:12 didn't you had to set the lighting set the scene they had to rehearse their lines at no point to someone say I don't 1:30:17 get it why why is this the problem he's looking at the files somebody should have said something it's weird I don't know all 1:30:24 right I do notice in especially back back in the day you know women virginity 1:30:30 was seen as this big virtue particularly in the 80s uh this was they are so obsessed 1:30:39 with Claire's virginity well everyone and Anthony Michael H are you not a are you so it's boy and girl give him credit 1:30:46 for that that they they uh um hanged these poor students who 1:30:52 hadn't yet had you haven't you haven't had vaginal intercourse the age of 15 yet what's wrong with you whoa 1:30:59 easy particularly there was several different instances like three different 1:31:05 places in the movie where they're talking about Claire's virginity and even one time when Bender was really 1:31:11 trying to fire her up and and he's like over the bra under the sweater I know 1:31:18 and she's like are you are you trying to make me puke I thought that was really weird why would that make you puke 1:31:25 like why would you be dis no I think cuz she's disgusted by him and she's enion 1:31:30 did that to her trying to make me puke like you're GNA do this to me you're gross if it was A's character be a 1:31:36 different story uh so I what I found this is what I find I maybe it's a sign 1:31:41 but I was around this time I went through high school like I graded 93 I will not confirm or to die my virginity 1:31:47 at the 93 but what I no I I was religious but nobody made fun of me I 1:31:53 was it it was really talked about and I don't remember people in the hallway hey hey we got a virgin over here like it 1:31:59 was it wasn't really some kids yeah they're kids getting together you knew about it they they've been dating for 10 1:32:04 months they probably done things but then if you weren't dating anyone you just assume well a guy or a girl doesn't have a girlfriend or boyfriend I assume 1:32:10 they're probably not having sex with the family dog like it's just oh my God yeah I mean but this is weird that people 1:32:16 assume that everyone not everyone's hooking up like I graduated with 500 students everyone was hooking up some 1:32:22 people just weren't having sex and wasn't like everyone had a had a partner you just mathematically not everyone had 1:32:28 a partner no it it is a weird like these teen movies really focused on it plus 90 that's like literally 10 years later 1:32:34 maybe there was you know some but I think particularly for Claire because she's the the pretty popular one and you 1:32:42 know and then and then they're like well or are you a tease they're like well you're screwed either way because you're 1:32:48 either a prude or a [ __ ] well that's why like Els and she's character was like yeah I I do everyone all the time 1:32:54 everywhere that's kind of what are you going to do about it if you just kind of own even though she didn't but she just said it to say okay fine I'm a [ __ ] 1:33:02 next like it's almost it doesn't matter the idea is it doesn't matter for her 1:33:07 because she's a quote unquote nobody nobody cares what she I mean that's you know that's the idea is on this pedestal 1:33:14 yeah would he like her better oh yeah I had five guys with me yesterday like I don't want to be crude but it's like 1:33:19 what what would she said where he would have backed off and said oh yeah oh yeah I've been having SE 12 what's it to you 1:33:26 that was Allison's Point you're screwed as a woman in that situation you're screwed either way because you're a prud 1:33:32 if you haven't and you're a [ __ ] if you have right I mean or you say sadly I've 1:33:38 just been waiting for you I just been waiting for you thank you so much this is amazing oh you know but you're with 1:33:45 the movie you're right there's even within the movie there's the double standard because it's assumed that men do it and then when she finds out that 1:33:53 Brian's a she's like I think it's okay for a guy to be a virgin well [ __ ] of course that's what I mean we need to 1:33:59 have a partner I mean look something wrong I you could lose your virginity obviously same sex relationships you 1:34:05 lose your you that is losing your virginity but the point you get what I'm saying the point is that if I lost my 1:34:10 Virginia at 14 well I probably did it with someone did it with me so why is like who's that girl we got to track her 1:34:16 down and get the is this funny how old men aren't virgins but old women are so 1:34:22 who are the men have the one well I mean here's the thing in back in the day it's 1:34:27 okay for you to like a a nice young man 1:34:32 to you know waste himself on like some [ __ ] girl that doesn't matter but when 1:34:38 he's going to marry someone well she better be pure as the Virgin I'm telling you right now I got my practice in but 1:34:45 I'll show you a thing or two on our wedding night don't you worry yeah it's just it's gross it's gross I'll take 1:34:51 care of you honey I'll take care of you okay what which one of the lunches I 1:34:57 love the lunch scene sush which one you that would be yours but in now but in 1:35:03 high school oh sorry in high school yeah okay for me it was the peanut butter and 1:35:08 jam sandwich with the juice box for sure no juice box are you kidding me that's spoil I don't think I was given a drink 1:35:14 I think I was told to drink from the fountain as a kid drink juice boxes I may I shouldn't 1:35:19 I shouldn't out my parents like that I don't know we weren't that well off but definitely it was 1:35:24 Sandwiches an apple orange homemade granola 1:35:30 bar yeah oh what what a nutritious so you really were uh Brian Johnson what do 1:35:35 all the food groups are rep he makes fun of it all the food groups are represented that was me yeah he would 1:35:41 have made fun of my lunch even though he would have lik to have had it at the same that's awesome uh the the Captain Crunch in 1:35:48 Allison's sandwich was her uh adlib because yeah she thought it would you 1:35:54 know the crunch sound would be good yeah yeah I love Captain Crunch it chews up your mouth but boy as a kid that was 1:36:02 like the the Captain Crunch was a kid was like gold would she put I mean that sandwich 1:36:08 was would you have I mean it probably wouldn't be that bad it's sticks pix but 1:36:14 there was probably mayo or something because on the because she throws I think it was just bread and was it just 1:36:19 was it not just it looked like it was just bread in the cereal was it okay so it's to me I was like oh that is a dry 1:36:25 bite of food is there's no liquid pixie sticks or sugar sticks in Captain Crunch between bread no thanks uh okay what 1:36:33 would you do for a million dollars in the circle they ask that's what started the circle conversation is 1:36:39 what would you do for a million dollars would you show up to school naked like things like that no yeah everyone has a 1:36:45 number I know it's funny it's that the naked thing is always a thing like I am 1:36:50 you ever watch it's not true but you ever watch rested development not regularly but yeah there was a 1:36:56 character who he was never nude that was his character he just he was never nude like even like at home at the 1:37:02 shower he's wearing shorts he has a never nude policy but I'm not like that but the it always makes me laugh so 1:37:08 streaking I I was never interested in that so I don't know what I would do for a million dollars boy what's funny is I 1:37:15 don't think I would have I mean a million maybe I would for a million dollars but in high school you care so 1:37:21 much about what people think about you and those four years yeah but I will say I would now 1:37:28 100% like be in public nude for a million dollars I would okay so what do 1:37:34 you mean by new like what do you do I'm not nothing crash but like walk are you how long are we talking about for that's 1:37:40 a good question in parameters but I would walk outside of my house and maybe walk up and down my sidewalk your hair 1:37:46 has to be behind your back though you have very long hair you can't pull the Mermaid The Little Mermaid yeah I would yeah I would yeah cuz they yeah actually 1:37:53 my hair would cover yeah like in Splash my hair would cover yeah Splash that's right yeah so you'd have to put the hair 1:37:59 back this is not PG this is a R rated nudity okay so you wouldn't walk 1:38:04 outside I'm a baby even if you offered me a billion I'd be T I'm such I'm scared I'm scared I do a billion dollars 1:38:12 yes you would maybe that's my I don't know a million I don't think a million I think it would have to go higher than 1:38:18 million I don't so I don't know I'm I'm so boring I I know this is a fun game and I'm not trying to tap out of the 1:38:24 game because it is just a game I could easily sure I'll do it for a million just to end the game but I'm such a I'm so I'm so easily embarrassed by that 1:38:30 kind of stuff so I don't know I don't know I think I think I would I think I might slash the neighborhood tires for a 1:38:35 million bucks instead or something like that maybe more the criminal side of behavior than embarrass you myself if 1:38:41 that makes sense I have a feeling all of the European listeners are like bashing their heads against something because 1:38:47 it's it's as I understand it even when I would go to travel like you could like bats even here there's like nude you 1:38:54 know you go to like a yeah a hot hot springs or whatever and you know or 1:39:00 actually I have done topless on a beach in Mexico for no money but again it was but 1:39:06 but I wasn't the only one you know what I mean well yeah I guess for men always say I speaking as a guy that's all I 1:39:12 have is that thing down there that's it like meaning because you know if you have small breasts big breast men usually don't care like we're not oh 1:39:19 those are small hey they're breasts we don't really care small versus big but for 1:39:24 men yeah for the record it's 10 inches you're like no l lest you lest you think 1:39:32 no but the point is for a guy that's all that's all once that's Expos it's like that's it that's valid so do you think 1:39:39 they go back what happens on Monday There's couples what happens particularly do 1:39:46 they is this just a one time just a one-off experience I think I think that's that's why we don't see it I 1:39:52 think it's why we don't see it cuz I think it'll be too hard for us to see I think the audience would be just sad to see that oh it's just because that's 1:39:58 Teenage life I think that's when we go because there was talk about reinvestigating the characters every 10 years type talk to see how they've 1:40:05 Advanced or whatever and that'd be an interesting case study but I think as far as high school goes on the Monday following so there be the cursory nod 1:40:12 the following Monday barely a nod two months down the road you're just with your groups and your friends and your 1:40:18 clubs and your sports and your whatever you just move on I think so too 1:40:23 it was fun before I forget there was a there was a he wrote John Hughes wrote like what 1:40:31 would happen to the characters later in life it's funny what he wrote for Molly Ringo's character she did in real life 1:40:37 did get fat no not fat she didn't say fat I think said kids I because Molly's 1:40:43 not fat any way she performed but I think she might have had children but said that she would get her face done and the boob job two two boob jobs and a 1:40:51 facelift later which is the reason I said did she get fat is because that's 1:40:56 what Bender assumed would happen oh yeah John Hughes wrote like the characters but it's just kind of ironic that he 1:41:04 kind of called Molly and I'm not shaming her great you got a boob but she actually did get breast augmentation work done and work done on her face just 1:41:12 like they set the oh oh in real life yeah yes Molly did yeah I see mhm yeah 1:41:19 there's no party scene no guys drinking beer no be breasts we kind of talked about it at the beginning but despite 1:41:24 all of that and the the studios wanting that that's your typical teen movie this 1:41:29 is so far outside that and then it was also shot in sequence which is different yes yeah that's cool I like that though 1:41:37 I think everybody knows but John Hughes has a cameo in this he picks up Brian at 1:41:43 the end that's John Hughes in the car Bri and the drop off but yeah it's the dad the drop off is his real mother and 1:41:51 sister his mom that's right and the actresses the who play his mom and his 1:41:59 sister in the car are his real mother and real sister that's right that's 1:42:04 cool should we do some castings let's see what else Carl the janitor Rick 1:42:09 Moranis was originally cast as him that would have been okay but it would have been too like he's just specie too silly 1:42:17 I like the janit that was cast yeah I do too I do too Bill Murray was briefly considered and same with John 1:42:24 Candy well I love John Candy but John Candy did go on he would have been he 1:42:30 would have been good because he can do that drama he would have done the he would have been good because he can do those heartfelt moment talks too yeah 1:42:37 and he did go on to work with Hughes a couple of times so Home Alone Planes Trains and Automobiles Uncle 1:42:42 Buck Uncle Buck yeah du yeah let's see Hughes really did want amilo Estes but 1:42:48 if he couldn't he W he was considering Michael J fox Jim Carry Tom Cruz Matthew 1:42:56 brck and Rob low oh they all would have worked they all would have worked yeah degre for 1:43:02 Claire Jody Foster Robin Wright Laura D Laura D I guess want she auditioned for 1:43:09 both both of the female parts and Brook Shields was considered for Allison also 1:43:16 H okay Jodie Foster interesting I told you I think before she's 1:43:21 what my well she's my oldtime favorite actress that's right I forgot about that 1:43:27 yeah so she would have been too good I hate to say it it's just she could have done it nailed it but she's beyond that 1:43:35 she would have been beyond that type of film you know I this might be a hot take 1:43:40 I don't have anything wrong there's nothing wrong with Molly Ringwald yeah there's nothing 1:43:46 wrong in this particular role I see someone like Robin 1:43:51 Wright that more classically beautiful stuck up stuck up you know 1:43:58 like Molly Ringwald is cute but she's not your yeah I 1:44:06 think why say that but so if I was in that room and they said Ryan pick a girl to take to the prom right now go after 1:44:12 meeting them for the day I would have taken Alie Sheet's character both looks wise and personality wise like I would have been interested in Molly ringle's 1:44:19 character like just objectively as a guy to take a girl to the dance type thing so yeah I I agree with you they should 1:44:25 have gotten the blonde classic cheerleader bombshell type actress yeah it would have fit the ' 80s Trope 1:44:30 without being too silly but yeah that's the girl that would be popular at school would be the blond haired type 1:44:36 cheerleader she works in something like a 16 Candles because because she wasn't 1:44:42 Mis poopular know yeah and I never saw Molly as that I always saw her as yeah 1:44:48 as the cute but not yeah so it's interesting but maybe she's just just really sweet and 1:44:53 that's why Everyone likes her too that's I think what we're getting she seemed like she was a nice person is she wasn't 1:44:58 a [ __ ] you know so there was that so maybe she just was cute enough and 1:45:04 pretty enough that she was popular amongst her own peers and so she show she was raised up even higher because 1:45:09 she was actually not a bad person yeah do you know what the marijuana that 1:45:15 they smoke actually was oregano or something yeah oregano yeah interesting 1:45:22 let's see the library was it was a real school but it was the gymnasium of Maine North High School and it was 1:45:30 like made as a set specifically for this the dandruff that Ali shei shakes onto 1:45:36 her drawing you know what it was yeah yeah 1:45:41 parmeson yeah there's like a ton I could go on and on about some of the trivia yeah the trivia is crazy I saw IMDb as 1:45:48 well I was like holy smokes it's like tons of trivia tons yeah I mean I we 1:45:55 could go on for another hour talking about it but I don't want to bore you all no that's true we don't want well 1:46:00 it's too late for that that ship is sailed as they say it 1:46:06 so where does this rank for you with John Hughes movies oh I'd have to say well off the 1:46:13 top of my head let's start with top five for sure top three for sure now we're 1:46:18 battling out with a vacation and and Uncle Buck I really like Uncle Buck that was going to be one 1:46:24 of my because I I love John Candy so much but it's not number one I I can't 1:46:30 help it I love vacation that's my breakfast club I've seen vacation num times I love the comedy of vacation 1:46:37 classic Chevy Chase it has Anthony Michael Hall in as well funny enough Julie Julie Lewis which I love she's 1:46:43 great that I just I just love that that that it's so stupid it has John Candy at the end it's such a fantastically stupid 1:46:49 film that yeah it's hard for me to to not make that probably the number one film for me from John Hughes but this is 1:46:55 a fantastic film I had forgotten how good this film is like objectively speaking again watching this for the podcast after 20 odd years not seen it 1:47:02 it's like boy this really is a good film this is just a very good film I concur The Breakfast Club has 1:47:09 been called the quintessential gotcha 1980s film 1:47:15 and for me it is 100% my favorite John Hughes movie yeah I believe it it's in 1:47:21 my i' have to categorize them by genre but it's in my top five movies of all 1:47:27 time you know if you have to go to an island and you can only bring five movies this would be one of them for me 1:47:33 Fair yeah I adore The Breakfast Club so I'm so glad that you picked it because I 1:47:38 did kind of want it to be the first episode of season 2 also works out 1:47:43 because when this is released it will be at the anniversary the 40th anniversary of The 1:47:50 Breakfast Club and I just want to say as I totally agree with everything you're saying 1:47:56 about the film and I'll say with teen movies that's the thing now we're talking about teen movies this is strictly 18 kind of movie like teen 1:48:02 character [Music] movie I don't know which one beats it off to I don't know what teen character 1:48:10 Centric film beats this film that's where I put so I like okay vacation is a 1:48:17 is a more enjoyable like I get a kick out of it like yeah it's nostalgic too objectively this is a better film 1:48:24 obviously but we're talking about Nostalgia what I grew up with and I I'm a big comedy fan as you know 1:48:31 so but as far as team film goes boy I don't know of the top of my head what would beat the this is the Godfather of 1:48:37 Team films there you go oo well said Ryan well listeners tell me what you 1:48:45 think about the Breakfast Club where does it rank in all these different types of categories John Hughes movies 1:48:50 teen movies mov in general it's interesting that you hadn't seen it in 1:48:56 so long so that's
