- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to on Base presented by Geico. Get More Baseball,
- 0:04Speaker 1: Get More with the Geico. I am your host, Mookie Betts,
- 0:08Speaker 1: and today we had a three time All Star, two
- 0:12Speaker 1: time World Series Champion, and one of the best catchers
- 0:15Speaker 1: in the game in my teammate Will Smith.
- 0:17Speaker 2: How you doing, Bro, I'm good, I'm good. Thanks for
- 0:19Speaker 2: having me here, Man, thanks for coming on.
- 0:22Speaker 1: I know you don't do stuff like this, so hopefully
- 0:24Speaker 1: we can kind of get you out of your shell
- 0:26Speaker 1: a little bit and get you to talk, get you
- 0:30Speaker 1: get the fans to kind of know who you are. First,
- 0:34Speaker 1: we start with a game called on Base, off basis
- 0:38Speaker 1: of whether you're in or you're out. First thing is
- 0:42Speaker 1: the four major cities. The four major US cities are
- 0:46Speaker 1: New York, LA, Chicago, and DC. Are you in or
- 0:53Speaker 1: out on that? Yeah? Most people most it's usually New York,
- 0:57Speaker 1: LA and Chicago.
- 0:59Speaker 2: DC is the fourth.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Fourth is like, you know, do you think are you
- 1:03Speaker 1: in and out on that?
- 1:03Speaker 2: I mean yeah, I mean definitely the three I mean
- 1:05Speaker 2: fourth the nation's capital. I guess DC.
- 1:07Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean I mean you not not Atlanta.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Not Atlanta.
- 1:11Speaker 2: I thinking maybe Miami might be there.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean but I'm gonna go with DC just
- 1:16Speaker 1: because I think I'm in on this. So you're you're
- 1:19Speaker 1: in on this one.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm in on that.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I don't even know what another. I think Miami will
- 1:24Speaker 1: be the only other.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yeah, Miami was the first one I came to mind
- 1:27Speaker 2: that you didn't name, So I don't know.
- 1:30Speaker 1: All right, what about uh? What about this? The ABS challenge?
- 1:35Speaker 1: Just system, it's gonna be good for the game.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I mean, I have so many mixed feelings about it.
- 1:42Speaker 2: All right, let's hear them as a big leader. As
- 1:45Speaker 2: a player, like, you know, you want every call correct, right.
- 1:48Speaker 2: You don't want to get get screwed on a on
- 1:50Speaker 2: the empire missing a call right both sides. I'm the catchers,
- 1:53Speaker 2: so pitching, I don't want to miss calls, and hitting,
- 1:55Speaker 2: I don't want to you get a strike call and
- 1:57Speaker 2: missed three inches outside. But you know, I think I've
- 2:03Speaker 2: always liked that about baseball, where it's it's you can
- 2:06Speaker 2: get a bad call and you just have to deal
- 2:08Speaker 2: with their army a right, that's kind of it's always
- 2:10Speaker 2: you know, referred to as a game of life, and
- 2:14Speaker 2: you know, just just dealing with the bad call and
- 2:16Speaker 2: going from going on like knowing the umpire can make mistake.
- 2:20Speaker 2: I like that.
- 2:21Speaker 1: I like that about it. You like the human element.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I like the human element. Right, you can also get
- 2:25Speaker 2: a good brick, right, you can miss a strip call
- 2:27Speaker 2: and now you're two to one. Is set a one two?
- 2:33Speaker 2: But yeah, I don't know. I also think, like you know,
- 2:36Speaker 2: it's probably great in the big leagues, but you know,
- 2:39Speaker 2: kids watch our game, right and literally all of a sudden,
- 2:41Speaker 2: they're throwing to a box and they don't have abs
- 2:44Speaker 2: and they don't see us dealing with a bad call
- 2:47Speaker 2: or a good call or whatever. So you know, I'm
- 2:50Speaker 2: more worry about how it's gonna affect the game as
- 2:52Speaker 2: a whole as opposed to just you know, two in
- 2:55Speaker 2: the posts and all that.
- 2:56Speaker 1: But yeah, I don't know. I say, you're in between.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I feel like, for me, I think the challenge system
- 3:06Speaker 1: may be okay, just because it's not every pitch, so
- 3:13Speaker 1: like you know, in the second inning that like you said,
- 3:16Speaker 1: maybe down one two instead of two to one. But
- 3:19Speaker 1: in the ninth inning, you know, when things really kind
- 3:22Speaker 1: of it gets down the crunch time. I think that's
- 3:27Speaker 1: when a lot of challenges and hell, a lot of
- 3:31Speaker 1: things will happen, and I think that's where the game
- 3:35Speaker 1: really changes a lot. I mean, I remember a couple
- 3:37Speaker 1: of times I've gotten punched out in the eighth and ninth,
- 3:39Speaker 1: any of them on a ball that's you know, three
- 3:41Speaker 1: inches off the play. But I've also not, like you said,
- 3:45Speaker 1: not struck out on a pitch that caught the corner.
- 3:48Speaker 1: So I think late in the game it'll it'll be
- 3:51Speaker 1: all right. But I just wonder how it's gonna affect
- 3:53Speaker 1: the umpires, you know, because the umpires are not gonna
- 3:56Speaker 1: you know.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Yeah, they're already I call it dumbed up a little
- 3:59Speaker 2: bit of it. You know, there's second guessing. You sell
- 4:03Speaker 2: this enough, and you know, maybe the challenge is some helps.
- 4:07Speaker 2: It might help them, might make them relax a little
- 4:08Speaker 2: bit and help them, I don't know, or might maybe worse.
- 4:11Speaker 2: But you know, I think, you know, just smaller discussions
- 4:14Speaker 2: I have, you know, ninety percent of them want to
- 4:17Speaker 2: get the call correct and it's it's hard, but you know,
- 4:20Speaker 2: then they start thinking about it or you know, emotions
- 4:23Speaker 2: get in with challenges. Like I don't know, I don't
- 4:25Speaker 2: know what's going to happen.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I do think that I'm curious to see how the
- 4:29Speaker 1: teams challenge. Are the young guys going to be able
- 4:32Speaker 1: to challenge? Like if Alex Friedan goes up there and
- 4:35Speaker 1: challenges and yeah, he better be right, he better be right,
- 4:38Speaker 1: you know. You know, but if show Hay goes up
- 4:41Speaker 1: there and challenges, I think everybody's going to be like, oh,
- 4:43Speaker 1: I mean yeah, you know kind of whatever. So we'll
- 4:46Speaker 1: see how how teams.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Kind of yeah, what the strategy is behind it all?
- 4:49Speaker 1: And if there's gonna if there's gonna be more challenges
- 4:52Speaker 1: on the hitting side or on the pitching side, yep,
- 4:54Speaker 1: you know. So, uh well we'll see how that plays out. Okay,
- 4:58Speaker 1: So next thing, you're always down to make small talk
- 5:03Speaker 1: with the with the batter oh time? Really? Yeah? So
- 5:09Speaker 1: you you talk to the guys.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Yeah, like a little bit. I just kind of go
- 5:13Speaker 2: with them. You'll stay high or whatever. If they want
- 5:15Speaker 2: to talk, I'll talk.
- 5:16Speaker 1: But they really Yeah, so what do y'all talk about?
- 5:18Speaker 2: Like?
- 5:18Speaker 1: What? What? What? What would it be a conversation?
- 5:21Speaker 2: Man? Uh? I mean you got before they get in
- 5:24Speaker 2: the box, right, Okay, okay, because you know I'm not
- 5:26Speaker 2: talking to while they're trying to hit right, trying to
- 5:29Speaker 2: you know, decide what to call all that. But just
- 5:31Speaker 2: how you been has your family and stuff like that
- 5:35Speaker 2: small quick out and so.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Do you do that? Like what if one of your
- 5:41Speaker 1: homeboys comes up, are you talking to him every sometimes? Yeah? Okay,
- 5:46Speaker 1: yeah sometimes do you ever tell them, like, you know,
- 5:49Speaker 1: just swing last a bat or.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Uh yeah, I'll tell them, you know, just swing whatever. Yeah,
- 5:55Speaker 2: for sure.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And and this is only this is for everybody or
- 5:59Speaker 1: just the people you kind of.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Uh, that's probably one of the people I know, you
- 6:03Speaker 2: know and have a better relationship with just from playing
- 6:07Speaker 2: with them, playing against them more often.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Whatever have you ever like became friends just from you know, uh,
- 6:16Speaker 1: those quick little interactions?
- 6:18Speaker 2: No? Probably, okay, No, I mean, you know, come across
- 6:21Speaker 2: guys and random public and talk to them or say
- 6:25Speaker 2: high or whatever. But uh yeah, you know it makes
- 6:28Speaker 2: it easier maybe to have that conversation to small talk.
- 6:30Speaker 1: But so who talks the most to you? Like you
- 6:33Speaker 1: know what I'm saying out of everybody, like which guys
- 6:36Speaker 1: anybody talk the most to you?
- 6:38Speaker 2: Just depends, man, just depends. I don't know, I can't
- 6:41Speaker 2: think of anybody else off my head.
- 6:42Speaker 1: So everybody, everybody, nobody comes in like stone cold doesn't know.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Some guys do, for sure. Some guys will come in,
- 6:48Speaker 2: you know, maybe say hi, and then they're locked in
- 6:50Speaker 2: and that's it, okay.
- 6:52Speaker 1: And so you know, uh, Buster Posey recently, you just
- 6:55Speaker 1: said you're all business behind the plate, you're not really
- 7:00Speaker 1: trying to be anybody's friend. But and I don't think
- 7:03Speaker 1: he means that in necessarily negative way, but you're definitely.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Are a lot of Yeah, I'm definitely all business, but
- 7:10Speaker 2: I'll stay high and then you know, when it's when
- 7:12Speaker 2: it's time to like lock in after a couple of seconds, Yeah,
- 7:15Speaker 2: I'm walking.
- 7:15Speaker 1: And Posy also said he sees a lot of similated
- 7:18Speaker 1: similarities between you and him. So does that mean anything
- 7:21Speaker 1: to you? Like, is that that?
- 7:23Speaker 2: I mean, you know, I grew up watching him and
- 7:25Speaker 2: these argue one of the best catchers ever, top five
- 7:28Speaker 2: for sure, you know, three World World Series champion. Yeah,
- 7:33Speaker 2: I mean it's it's definitely a compliment.
- 7:36Speaker 1: And you get that. Yeah, you got to play against
- 7:38Speaker 1: him too, So was that was that every year? Yeah?
- 7:41Speaker 2: I talked to him a little bit, you know, more
- 7:42Speaker 2: in the box and stuff. He was always nice to me,
- 7:45Speaker 2: you know, I was always encouraging stuff. But you know,
- 7:47Speaker 2: he was trying to beat this as well for sure,
- 7:50Speaker 2: so he's he said some funny stuffs in the past,
- 7:52Speaker 2: but probably not keeping on on air.
- 7:55Speaker 1: So all right, So last one, our rival with the
- 8:00Speaker 1: Dodgers and Padres has overtaken the Yankees Red Sox as
- 8:05Speaker 1: the biggest scribble in the game. Are you on base
- 8:08Speaker 1: or off base with them?
- 8:10Speaker 2: I don't know, man, I'm kind of off based on that.
- 8:12Speaker 2: I think, you know, we've had five years now of
- 8:16Speaker 2: some really good baseball games, really good series posts and
- 8:19Speaker 2: matchups and stuff. But you know, the Red Sox Yankees
- 8:22Speaker 2: is years old. Yeah, like that's that's the rivalry in
- 8:26Speaker 2: baseball just from a historical hands standpoint. I'm not taking
- 8:31Speaker 2: away from our you know, a bounce with them, but
- 8:34Speaker 2: I just think, you know, a lot of time and
- 8:36Speaker 2: longevity mean mean something a little bit more than where
- 8:39Speaker 2: we're at with them. But yeah, no, it's fun though.
- 8:43Speaker 1: I agree with that. I think, you know, being playing
- 8:47Speaker 1: with the Red Sox going into that rivalry is it's
- 8:52Speaker 1: not just about baseball. I feel like here is mostly
- 8:55Speaker 1: just about baseball, like who has the best team? And
- 8:58Speaker 1: I mean it's beautiful, beautiful thing, right, I definitely enjoyed
- 9:01Speaker 1: coming to the pet Co and and hearing all the loud,
- 9:05Speaker 1: hearing all the all the fans and whatnot, super loud,
- 9:07Speaker 1: and it's a great atmosphere to play baseball. But you know,
- 9:11Speaker 1: with the Yankees and Red Sox, it's like baseball, but
- 9:14Speaker 1: it's like about the cities. You know, it's like who's
- 9:17Speaker 1: cities better? You know, who can get louder and all
- 9:19Speaker 1: this other stuff. So I think to your point, it
- 9:22Speaker 1: runs much much deeper and so much so so long
- 9:25Speaker 1: with the history and yeah, so I would be off
- 9:28Speaker 1: base with that. But you did you grew up a
- 9:30Speaker 1: Red Sox fan. I did.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I've got some family up in the Boston area. Okay,
- 9:34Speaker 2: Grandma lives on the Cape and stuff. So yeah, when
- 9:37Speaker 2: I was you know, so.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Who'd you watch growing up? Like who was your your
- 9:40Speaker 1: favorite player growing up?
- 9:41Speaker 2: I mean that was like very attack Okay man, okay, okay,
- 9:46Speaker 2: it's all those guys. So yeah, I mean obviously two
- 9:48Speaker 2: thand and four, I was nine years old when they
- 9:51Speaker 2: did that, made that run and stuff came back against
- 9:54Speaker 2: the Yankees. Doc yeah, Doc, yeah, I didn't realize that
- 9:59Speaker 2: was him till like, yeah, you know, I call it
- 10:01Speaker 2: up I'm like, oh.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Okay, that makes it. But yeah I was.
- 10:05Speaker 2: I was became a fan from them, like right from then.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Nice. Okay, all right, so let's let's get a little
- 10:11Speaker 1: more into the Dodgers padres. This this little situation going
- 10:17Speaker 1: on right here. We're tied, and you know, all year
- 10:22Speaker 1: we were kind of in first, you know, playing and whatnot,
- 10:25Speaker 1: and then uh we had a little rut, and now
- 10:30Speaker 1: we're tired. I really kind of appreciate this because it
- 10:35Speaker 1: forces us to play the whole season. I remember, I
- 10:39Speaker 1: want to say, my first couple of years, we won
- 10:42Speaker 1: the division with like a couple of weeks left in
- 10:45Speaker 1: this season, and we ended up getting put out a
- 10:49Speaker 1: couple of times early. But now with this rivalry here
- 10:53Speaker 1: and not with with them tied with us, I feel
- 10:56Speaker 1: like it's going to help us in the long run.
- 10:58Speaker 2: When you think about that, yeah, I can agree. You know,
- 11:01Speaker 2: I look back to twenty one US first the Giants.
- 11:04Speaker 2: You know, they won one hundred and six and one
- 11:06Speaker 2: one hundred and five and it was done in the
- 11:08Speaker 2: last day, you know, but uh, you know, we were
- 11:12Speaker 2: we were locking for that wildcard games, great series and
- 11:16Speaker 2: five games for the Giants and beat them but we
- 11:19Speaker 2: we can never take the you know, the foot off
- 11:21Speaker 2: the gas were it was go time, you know, the
- 11:24Speaker 2: whole month of August, almost of September. So yeah, obviously
- 11:27Speaker 2: we came out short and twenty one, but uh, you know,
- 11:31Speaker 2: I don't think that was a mentality thing. I think
- 11:33Speaker 2: that was you know, the British just beat us. Yeah,
- 11:36Speaker 2: they just beat us. Yeah, there's nothing we can do
- 11:38Speaker 2: about it.
- 11:39Speaker 1: So yeah, not even be good for us. So and
- 11:41Speaker 1: uh they added, uh these guys in the bullpen and
- 11:47Speaker 1: and O'Hearn and I mean they they're good, man, they're
- 11:51Speaker 1: really they're really a ball club. But we are too.
- 11:54Speaker 1: So I think it's gonna be Uh, it's gonna be
- 11:56Speaker 1: all right. Everything's gonna be cool. I do want to
- 11:58Speaker 1: go Okay, so let's go back a little bit. I
- 12:02Speaker 1: want to talk about you a little bit. When you're
- 12:05Speaker 1: a kid, he grew up in Kentucky, Right, what other
- 12:09Speaker 1: sports did you play?
- 12:10Speaker 2: Yes, so I grew up playing uh golf, golf and baseball.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Played basketball my freshman year of high school.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Well basketball, so like, were you good?
- 12:21Speaker 2: I could shoot?
- 12:22Speaker 1: You could shoot?
- 12:22Speaker 2: I can shoot, play a defense? I mean yeah, basketball
- 12:26Speaker 2: wasn't going to be my thing. But uh, you know,
- 12:29Speaker 2: I went to a small private school so I could
- 12:31Speaker 2: play played through middle school and all that.
- 12:33Speaker 1: So you played golf though, And are you scratch golfer?
- 12:39Speaker 1: I'm close to it, close to it. So if you
- 12:42Speaker 1: go out, like, what's your handicap? You have? You have index?
- 12:46Speaker 2: Yeah right now for one and a half. I think,
- 12:47Speaker 2: So that's that isn't that scratch? I mean a zero
- 12:50Speaker 2: scratch zero? Yeah?
- 12:52Speaker 1: Okay? So and how often do you get to play
- 12:54Speaker 1: on the road?
- 12:56Speaker 2: It just depends, just depends.
- 12:58Speaker 1: When you're catching, I mean with some of your time,
- 13:00Speaker 1: so you don't really.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Yeah, try not to. I'll play on days I catch
- 13:04Speaker 2: usually if it's like a pre course, I don't want
- 13:05Speaker 2: to pass up. But uh yeah, I think once a
- 13:10Speaker 2: road trip, maybe every other road trip, will play twice
- 13:14Speaker 2: or something. It just depends, just spends who who can play,
- 13:16Speaker 2: who can get out, and then where we're going.
- 13:19Speaker 1: And so you get into school and you're playing. Did
- 13:23Speaker 1: you play golf for the school?
- 13:24Speaker 2: I did?
- 13:25Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, so you played golf and baseball for the
- 13:28Speaker 1: school And then when did you stop playing golf once
- 13:33Speaker 1: I got to college? Okay, so you didn't want to
- 13:35Speaker 1: play golf? And could you play golf in college?
- 13:39Speaker 2: I never got recruited to.
- 13:40Speaker 1: I wasn't.
- 13:41Speaker 2: I was probably good enough to like put in the
- 13:43Speaker 2: work and get better and do all that. But I'm
- 13:46Speaker 2: a lot better than I than I was.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Now, do you think you could have did both? Like
- 13:50Speaker 1: timing wise?
- 13:50Speaker 2: I don't think timing wise, you know, Okay, I went
- 13:52Speaker 2: to uf L, you know, seeing the golfers and baseball
- 13:56Speaker 2: schedule and knowing some of the golfers, Like, yeah, that'd
- 14:00Speaker 2: have been impossible to do unless you just show up,
- 14:02Speaker 2: play team and go right back to baseball practice.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Like that wasn't gonna happen. Okay, So you went to
- 14:07Speaker 1: the u of L played And who else did you
- 14:10Speaker 1: play with the uf L? Because I know I was
- 14:12Speaker 1: talking to Rushing and there's a lot of guys that
- 14:15Speaker 1: really went to u of L that are in the
- 14:17Speaker 1: big leagues now and I didn't even realize, like u
- 14:19Speaker 1: of L was just kind of pumping people into the
- 14:21Speaker 1: league like that.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Yeah, we had a really good, good stretch of guys,
- 14:26Speaker 2: you know, No, a lot of guys were kind of
- 14:28Speaker 2: up and down guys, but there's there's a ton of them.
- 14:32Speaker 1: You know.
- 14:32Speaker 2: My draft class was sixteen we had, oh yeah, we
- 14:35Speaker 2: had four guys taking the first round for your first round, okay,
- 14:40Speaker 2: like six or something more in the top ten, so
- 14:42Speaker 2: like like eight or night guys in top two rounds.
- 14:44Speaker 2: It was yeah, we were. We were a pretty good team.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Did you guys make it to the College World Series?
- 14:49Speaker 2: We did my freshman year, sophomore and junior year. We
- 14:52Speaker 2: lost in the super regionals.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Okay, okay, And how was it? How was that experience? Great?
- 14:56Speaker 2: I loved it. I love college. You know, some best
- 15:00Speaker 2: friends are from there. I was still keep in touch
- 15:02Speaker 2: with come but uh yeah, it was just you know,
- 15:05Speaker 2: it was a lot of fun. It was a lot
- 15:06Speaker 2: of fun. Just you know, I mean it was a
- 15:08Speaker 2: lot of work obviously going to school, you know, baseball
- 15:11Speaker 2: work or waking up, you know, anybody to do your.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Homework, bro, No they should. I didn't go to t
- 15:20Speaker 1: I'm dishing it out. I'm forking with that. I'm not
- 15:22Speaker 1: trying to write any pain now.
- 15:23Speaker 2: We were we were, yeah, I yeah, that wasn't happening.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Okay, So then you get drafted, uh my Dodgers, and
- 15:32Speaker 1: then you how was your mind league experience? It was?
- 15:35Speaker 1: It was fine.
- 15:36Speaker 2: You know, the Dodgers I felt very fortunate with daughters.
- 15:38Speaker 2: You know. So my teammates from college were with different organizations,
- 15:41Speaker 2: and you know, it seemed like we had a pretty
- 15:44Speaker 2: good you know, eating well, the coaching seemed better than most.
- 15:49Speaker 2: You know, they were invested. They're invested in me individually.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Can't up with a good plan. There's big communication stuff
- 15:55Speaker 2: like that. So yeah, I enjoyed it, you know, I have.
- 16:00Speaker 2: We had some good teams, the miners. It was fun,
- 16:03Speaker 2: you know, they were we you know, it's daughters.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Man.
- 16:06Speaker 2: It's about way for sure. For sure, everything was geared
- 16:08Speaker 2: towards winning and you know, becoming a big leaguer and
- 16:12Speaker 2: what what you need to do as an individual, what
- 16:15Speaker 2: you could do is a teammate. It was just all
- 16:17Speaker 2: encompassing and it was you know, I think a lot
- 16:21Speaker 2: of that is, you know, reflecting who I am to
- 16:23Speaker 2: day as a baseball player, just from being shown the ropes.
- 16:28Speaker 1: It's pretty cool. And then he debuted in nineteen I remember,
- 16:34Speaker 1: I remember watching your first hit MHM and you go
- 16:40Speaker 1: through X Y and z arround. I remember because we
- 16:43Speaker 1: were on the other side and I think we were finishing,
- 16:45Speaker 1: we had finished the game. We govern in the highlights
- 16:47Speaker 1: and stuff. I thought it was you're hearing your name.
- 16:51Speaker 1: I'm like, you know, the actor Will Smith. So I
- 16:54Speaker 1: was like, who is this guy or whatever? And so then,
- 16:57Speaker 1: like I said, you go through finished nineteen and then
- 17:00Speaker 1: twenty twenty comes, which is like essentially your I guess.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Your yeah, year, nineteen years year plus.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Whatever, and so, uh, how was it? That was my
- 17:14Speaker 1: first year here and we didn't really talk much, and
- 17:17Speaker 1: you know, I was new and whatnot. But what I
- 17:21Speaker 1: did here was like you were kind of going through
- 17:23Speaker 1: some not learning how to catch, but like just learning
- 17:26Speaker 1: the game of how it was supposed to be played
- 17:30Speaker 1: and what So, can you take me kind of through
- 17:32Speaker 1: that because I know that was something that was kind
- 17:35Speaker 1: of talked about, is like you had to learn how
- 17:37Speaker 1: to call and learn, you know, more about receiving and
- 17:40Speaker 1: all this type of things.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, you know, just like any young player,
- 17:44Speaker 2: they got they got stuff to learn, they got stuff
- 17:45Speaker 2: to work on and get better. I think, I mean,
- 17:50Speaker 2: going from Miley's the Big Leies is a whole different game,
- 17:52Speaker 2: especially you're trying to call a game or trying to
- 17:55Speaker 2: you know, know your picture strengths, know the hitters. Like
- 17:58Speaker 2: it's a lot and you know, I think I might
- 18:03Speaker 2: be a little stubborn in some of my ways looking
- 18:05Speaker 2: back and what I thought was right, and you know,
- 18:09Speaker 2: I was open to I'm always I've always been the
- 18:11Speaker 2: person that's open to learning and listening and stuff like that.
- 18:13Speaker 2: But uh, yeah, I don't know if it's stressed or whatever,
- 18:16Speaker 2: but even the stressful situations and you kind of rely on,
- 18:21Speaker 2: you know, what you've always done. So I think getting
- 18:23Speaker 2: out of a comfort shelle and trying new ideas and
- 18:27Speaker 2: you know, listening to pitching coaches and stuff like that,
- 18:29Speaker 2: and really understanding, you know, what picture have on the
- 18:31Speaker 2: mound and who the hitter is. You know, it takes years.
- 18:35Speaker 2: It takes years of experience. It does really really understand that.
- 18:40Speaker 2: So yeah, I think I don't know it was you know,
- 18:46Speaker 2: I had Russell Martin there. Yeah, you had some guys
- 18:48Speaker 2: to learn from it. I had some guys, and but
- 18:50Speaker 2: it was it's hard.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I mean, like, just like you said, being a young guy,
- 18:54Speaker 1: there's no h Experience is really the only teacher. Yeah,
- 18:58Speaker 1: you know exactly. People can tell you what to do
- 19:01Speaker 1: to their blue in the face, but until you really
- 19:04Speaker 1: experienced that, your your way isn't the best way or
- 19:09Speaker 1: maybe your way is the best way, whatever it is,
- 19:12Speaker 1: that's the only way that's really going to force change. Yeah, exactly,
- 19:16Speaker 1: So then wind up winning. But you didn't catch the
- 19:20Speaker 1: last out you were at that time. Barnesy was catching
- 19:26Speaker 1: at that time. And so then going into the next
- 19:28Speaker 1: couple of years you started catching. Your role really expanded.
- 19:32Speaker 1: And what do you think was the reason? Not for
- 19:37Speaker 1: you personally, what do you think was the reason that
- 19:40Speaker 1: your role started to expand? Like, what do you think
- 19:42Speaker 1: you got better at everything? Everything?
- 19:46Speaker 2: Obviously I've only said pretty well in the big league,
- 19:49Speaker 2: so you know, understanding more situations, maybe that side of
- 19:52Speaker 2: the ball, but I think just catching, you know, having
- 19:55Speaker 2: better relationship with the pictures, gaining their trust, gaining the
- 19:59Speaker 2: staffs trust as well on the plate, especially in bigger games,
- 20:02Speaker 2: and you know, making the right decisions, making the right calls,
- 20:06Speaker 2: having all the right discussions before the game, after the game.
- 20:11Speaker 2: I'm just talking through things and really you know, showing
- 20:13Speaker 2: I'm understanding what's going on, what needs to be done
- 20:16Speaker 2: in this situation versus situation I'm we're just managing the
- 20:19Speaker 2: game as opposed to one hitter at a time kind
- 20:21Speaker 2: of mentality.
- 20:23Speaker 1: What and and something you just said kind of plays
- 20:27Speaker 1: into now, like you have so many pictures essentially to manage, right,
- 20:33Speaker 1: and then we're adding guys at the deadline, we're bringing
- 20:35Speaker 1: up guys. How do you manage that? Like you know,
- 20:39Speaker 1: you know, like because you can't just because it says,
- 20:43Speaker 1: you know, this guy doesn't hit fastball as away or sliders, Well,
- 20:46Speaker 1: how do you know that this guy's going to execute?
- 20:48Speaker 1: How do you make this guy comfortable to execute?
- 20:50Speaker 2: Like?
- 20:50Speaker 1: What are what are these things? You know? How do
- 20:52Speaker 1: you do that? Yeah?
- 20:53Speaker 2: I think you know, one is trying to make the
- 20:55Speaker 2: picture comfortable with me and trust me, and that does.
- 20:58Speaker 1: That play a part in like just walking around the.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Clubhouse and they show up talking to him a little bit?
- 21:04Speaker 2: You know, I think now I'm at the point where
- 21:07Speaker 2: a guy walks and they trust you because I'm a
- 21:09Speaker 2: more veteran guy, like you know, they see that and
- 21:12Speaker 2: you're not trying to prove yourself as much of them.
- 21:13Speaker 2: But you still gotta make them comfortable, right, right, You
- 21:15Speaker 2: still gotta converse with them and all that. But I think,
- 21:20Speaker 2: you know, I think it comes to game calling. There's
- 21:23Speaker 2: I've talked about some of this with you know, the
- 21:25Speaker 2: other catchers and only catchers and stuff like that. Like,
- 21:28Speaker 2: there's so many different buckets. There's the the scattering for it, right,
- 21:32Speaker 2: there's the picture strength, there's the game situation. There's all
- 21:37Speaker 2: these different things. You gotta take an account and just
- 21:40Speaker 2: weighing which one is more important at the time.
- 21:43Speaker 1: So neither none of those are the most important. It's
- 21:46Speaker 1: just relative to what's going on.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's the game situation. You know, it's
- 21:51Speaker 2: looking at the game situation. Where are we at? Where,
- 21:53Speaker 2: what's the score, what's the scoreboard saying. It's knowing, you
- 21:58Speaker 2: know what, what the picture can con right, what can
- 22:00Speaker 2: you throw your strike? What could chase? How's it coming
- 22:02Speaker 2: out that day one day is different than the next.
- 22:06Speaker 2: It's knowing, you know what, what the hitter does, what
- 22:09Speaker 2: they're thinking, what they're we did lasted back to him.
- 22:13Speaker 2: It's just all these different little things that you got
- 22:14Speaker 2: to kind of process, put a little bit of weight
- 22:17Speaker 2: into all of it, and come off with the best
- 22:18Speaker 2: decision you can.
- 22:19Speaker 1: And all this is in like five seconds. Yeah, so
- 22:23Speaker 1: you find a little process.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, you know, you just make a decision and
- 22:26Speaker 2: go with it and.
- 22:28Speaker 1: And if they shake whatever, you know, kind of is
- 22:30Speaker 1: what it is.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, exactly. I mean lately they've shaken a couple
- 22:33Speaker 2: of times, and you know that's where I'm not prepared for, right,
- 22:36Speaker 2: is they shake and you're like, oh, what do they want? Like,
- 22:38Speaker 2: I've already made up my decision what I think is best.
- 22:42Speaker 2: So then you're like trying, you know, fifteen second fish
- 22:45Speaker 2: clock and you know, I call it a change up
- 22:48Speaker 2: right or a slider, and they're thinking something else. And
- 22:53Speaker 2: then you both call the wrong pitch because you know
- 22:56Speaker 2: what I mean, like the worst pitch because you're not
- 22:58Speaker 2: thinking he's like, oh well okay that was the second.
- 23:01Speaker 2: It's coming about this in the bud a little bit lately,
- 23:03Speaker 2: but yeah, it's but at the end of the day,
- 23:07Speaker 2: like you execute a pitch like the hitters usually out.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Yeah, so bad execution. So like earlier you mentioned like
- 23:14Speaker 1: you you kind of always hit in the big leagues.
- 23:16Speaker 1: This is something that's just really natural for you hit hitting. Obviously,
- 23:20Speaker 1: we know this year you're super bowling, right, this is probably, argue,
- 23:26Speaker 1: probably the best best year of your career so far.
- 23:31Speaker 1: What do you I'm not gonna say attribute that too,
- 23:34Speaker 1: but like do you feel like it's just more of
- 23:36Speaker 1: a comfort thing now that you really feel comfortable. It
- 23:39Speaker 1: looks like you're really comfortable catching and like, you know,
- 23:44Speaker 1: it seems like you kind of know the league better
- 23:47Speaker 1: just off your own, not have nothing to do with
- 23:49Speaker 1: the paper, right, And so do you think that kind
- 23:51Speaker 1: of hash, you know, helped you maybe a little bit?
- 23:57Speaker 2: You know, I still it's definitely not natural, right, It's
- 24:02Speaker 2: a lot of work, it's a lot of you know,
- 24:04Speaker 2: preparation all that. It's it's still hard obviously, Uh, But yeah,
- 24:10Speaker 2: you know, I feel like I have a really good
- 24:12Speaker 2: understanding of my swinging mechanics and stuff like that, and
- 24:15Speaker 2: have a really good relationship you know, Robbert Bass and
- 24:17Speaker 2: JT and you know what they see. We just had
- 24:20Speaker 2: good conversations every day about you know what they see
- 24:23Speaker 2: just kind of limiting getting all tracked too much. Basically.
- 24:27Speaker 2: It's just yeah, I get a get a really really
- 24:29Speaker 2: good routine going on really good base basically starting point,
- 24:35Speaker 2: I guess. And you know, I think this year just
- 24:38Speaker 2: haven't been hurt the last couple of years, you know,
- 24:40Speaker 2: with injuries kind of throws the body out of whack
- 24:43Speaker 2: and that stuff. So yeah, I think it's just kind
- 24:47Speaker 2: of it's been a good year, trying to keep it rolling,
- 24:49Speaker 2: trying to get back going again.
- 24:50Speaker 1: So yeah, I was talking to a cal rally on here,
- 24:54Speaker 1: and you see the season he has he's having, how
- 25:00Speaker 1: you know, hitting all his home runs and doing what
- 25:02Speaker 1: he's doing as a catcher, Like, is that that's got
- 25:05Speaker 1: to be like really really tough to do.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, I think anytime you hit where he's
- 25:12Speaker 2: at forty eight homers, how many guys have done that?
- 25:15Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean catchers have done that. I don't know. Yeah,
- 25:18Speaker 2: it's impressive. It's fun to watch. It seems like every
- 25:20Speaker 2: day's hitting two.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Homers, I know, on both sides. Yeah, And you know
- 25:24Speaker 1: it's it's neat for me to see because sometimes you're
- 25:30Speaker 1: going from one pictures meeting straight to our meeting. You
- 25:34Speaker 1: don't want to have any time to kind of chill
- 25:37Speaker 1: for yourself because then you got to hit at a
- 25:38Speaker 1: certain time, and then you got to go get dressed,
- 25:40Speaker 1: and then you're out. You're out there early, so you
- 25:43Speaker 1: really don't get any chill time, and you have to
- 25:45Speaker 1: be think on both sides of the ball. And for
- 25:47Speaker 1: you to be balling the way you're doing is is
- 25:51Speaker 1: really neat. I mean, And how do you manage your time.
- 25:55Speaker 2: I think it just comes to every team. You know,
- 25:57Speaker 2: I have X, Y and Z I gotta do so.
- 26:00Speaker 2: You know, when I'm when I'm hitting the cage right,
- 26:02Speaker 2: doing my team like it's one hundred focus on that,
- 26:04Speaker 2: thinking about you know what Snell is going to throw
- 26:07Speaker 2: later in the game, right, It's it's where what do
- 26:09Speaker 2: I need to get to get my swing right? You know,
- 26:12Speaker 2: It's it's it's a preparation on both sides, watching video,
- 26:16Speaker 2: looking at the skyty reports and all that and understanding
- 26:18Speaker 2: them and just thinking through that. You know, when I'm
- 26:21Speaker 2: looking at the you know, the picture side of the ball,
- 26:23Speaker 2: it's what do we need to do with the starter? Right?
- 26:27Speaker 2: Thinking through all that. But then it's it's just different.
- 26:30Speaker 2: It's compartmentalizing. I would say it's going to I don't know,
- 26:34Speaker 2: I've always been able to do it pretty well. I
- 26:36Speaker 2: think not letting my abs affect the catching and not
- 26:39Speaker 2: letting the catching effect THEA.
- 26:40Speaker 1: B's.
- 26:40Speaker 2: It's just it's kind of just two different games, two different,
- 26:43Speaker 2: totally different mindsets.
- 26:45Speaker 1: And you know, I can just flip through both. And
- 26:48Speaker 1: I wonder if golf plays a part in it, because
- 26:50Speaker 1: you play golf. Growing up and like if you hit
- 26:54Speaker 1: a bad drive or a good drive, it's almost like
- 26:58Speaker 1: you have to focus on this this next shot, no
- 27:01Speaker 1: matter what, you know. And I wonder if if catching
- 27:06Speaker 1: is kind of like that. You know, when you're going
- 27:08Speaker 1: to hit, you have to really just focus on this
- 27:09Speaker 1: and when you have to, when you want to catch,
- 27:11Speaker 1: you really have to just you know, you're able to
- 27:12Speaker 1: switch focus.
- 27:13Speaker 2: It's one of time for sure. Yeah, maybe you know
- 27:18Speaker 2: because golf different clubs and stuff.
- 27:19Speaker 1: I could be so, I know, uh, obviously you've been
- 27:24Speaker 1: super clutched this year for us, a lot of big hits,
- 27:27Speaker 1: another walk off homer. If Doc called you kind of
- 27:32Speaker 1: like that Freddy Freddy two point zero whatever that I know, right,
- 27:38Speaker 1: How would you? How would you how do you see
- 27:41Speaker 1: yourself or like your role on this team because everybody
- 27:44Speaker 1: talks about show a myself Freddy, you know whatever, X,
- 27:48Speaker 1: Y and Z, But like you're right there in the
- 27:51Speaker 1: middle and arguably probably arguably the most important guy in there.
- 27:59Speaker 1: So how do you how do you see yourself or
- 28:00Speaker 1: how would you define your role on on the Dodgers.
- 28:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think the catching is more important
- 28:07Speaker 2: than the hitting. You know, you gotta just gotta be
- 28:10Speaker 2: a rock back there for those guys, gotta be locked
- 28:13Speaker 2: in every single pitch, especially with this staff. Yeah, with
- 28:16Speaker 2: this staff, for sure. I mean we got a lot
- 28:17Speaker 2: of really talented arms, but you know, they just got
- 28:21Speaker 2: to be back there for them every single pitch, every
- 28:22Speaker 2: single day, whatever they need.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Then, Yeah, the.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Hitting, you know, it's yeah right there in the middle
- 28:29Speaker 2: of the top. For me, it's more no one's on
- 28:33Speaker 2: to get on base, and then when guys are on base,
- 28:34Speaker 2: trying to drive them in and.
- 28:36Speaker 1: So you're not you don't put a whole lot of
- 28:37Speaker 1: pressure on yourself from the offensive side.
- 28:39Speaker 2: It's no, I still do you know, I still have,
- 28:42Speaker 2: you know, really high expectations of myself and what I'm
- 28:45Speaker 2: trying to do, and you know, just really trying to
- 28:47Speaker 2: stitch my approach. I'm trying to trust what I'm trying
- 28:50Speaker 2: to do in that at bat, you know, really having
- 28:53Speaker 2: having a plan, and this is trying not to do
- 28:56Speaker 2: too much, just taking what the game is giving me.
- 28:58Speaker 2: I think that's important, you know, trying not to be
- 29:01Speaker 2: like show trying to hit fifty homers every year, like
- 29:04Speaker 2: it's just not gonna happen, right, But I can get
- 29:07Speaker 2: on base right, I can let Freddie drive me in
- 29:09Speaker 2: or or you know, move a guy over or a
- 29:11Speaker 2: guy in second, try to drive him men, Like, that's
- 29:14Speaker 2: That's what I'm trying to do.
- 29:15Speaker 1: And going back a little bit, I know I talked
- 29:19Speaker 1: about the relationships that you have to build with the pictures.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Is it hard when you get somebody like Blake Snell,
- 29:26Speaker 1: Glass now Rokie and this year your first year? Is
- 29:30Speaker 1: this is your first year catch a showbey as well? Like,
- 29:33Speaker 1: is it hard developing not just a personal relationship with him,
- 29:37Speaker 1: but like that picture catcher relationship with guys that you
- 29:40Speaker 1: you haven't really called, but they're super talented. They they've
- 29:42Speaker 1: done it essentially, I'm not gonna say they're away, but
- 29:45Speaker 1: they've done it in a certain way and now they
- 29:47Speaker 1: come over here. Like, is hard?
- 29:49Speaker 2: It's yeah, It's definitely tough, you know, because you know,
- 29:52Speaker 2: I think we have a very good system of the
- 29:53Speaker 2: Dodgers between myself, Friar, Connor, Danny. You know, we we
- 30:00Speaker 2: have very good system and very good you know way
- 30:04Speaker 2: we do things. I know, it made us really really
- 30:06Speaker 2: get in the last five six years or whatever. So yeah,
- 30:10Speaker 2: you tell you a guy like Snell, right, he's he's
- 30:12Speaker 2: very set in his ways and what he's trying to
- 30:14Speaker 2: do and how he thinks of the game. And yeah,
- 30:17Speaker 2: it's it's more you know, going with going with them
- 30:21Speaker 2: doing what they do well, keeping them comfortable, finding times
- 30:25Speaker 2: to you know, critique, not not be like what the
- 30:30Speaker 2: heck were you thinking here? But I thought he could
- 30:32Speaker 2: have done this different?
- 30:34Speaker 1: Right?
- 30:34Speaker 2: And then it's just it's just an open dialogue, right,
- 30:36Speaker 2: Like it takes time and takes experiences together, takes failure
- 30:40Speaker 2: together to really you know, learn and and uh and
- 30:45Speaker 2: not mess up the same situation the next time.
- 30:47Speaker 1: And there's a guy specific, uh that you didn't start
- 30:52Speaker 1: off catching, he had his own catcher and then you
- 30:56Speaker 1: caught us three thousands strikeout and curse, and so how
- 30:59Speaker 1: has it been catching him? And you know, because when
- 31:02Speaker 1: you see him all the time, like we've seen him
- 31:04Speaker 1: with I've been with him with like this is my
- 31:06Speaker 1: fifth year when couraging, Yeah, it's almost sometimes like you
- 31:12Speaker 1: forget that he's Clayton kersh wrong and his stats and everything,
- 31:17Speaker 1: and so how how was it, uh, you know, really
- 31:21Speaker 1: kind of getting to know him and now getting to
- 31:23Speaker 1: catch him catching his three thousand strikeout? You know, now
- 31:25Speaker 1: you guys are really on the same page. Yeah, now
- 31:27Speaker 1: there's no shaking it really going on.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's definitely been a whirlwind a little bit.
- 31:32Speaker 2: You know, he's he's arguably one of the best pictures ever,
- 31:36Speaker 2: Like you can argue it right then. Yeah, when I
- 31:39Speaker 2: came in as a rookie, it was it was tough.
- 31:41Speaker 2: You know, it was tough trying to learn him. He's tough.
- 31:44Speaker 2: I mean, he gets, he gets he is frustrated, right,
- 31:47Speaker 2: we see it. It's just him competing. Like it's nothing
- 31:51Speaker 2: like sounding a personal attack or anything like that. And
- 31:54Speaker 2: so yeah, just it's just talking to him. It's trying
- 31:56Speaker 2: to get to think what he's thinking, really understanding how
- 31:59Speaker 2: his stuff plays and what he's seeing. And it's just experience.
- 32:03Speaker 2: It's just being back there and you know, seeing what
- 32:09Speaker 2: he's doing and really getting understanding of how hitters react
- 32:12Speaker 2: and different hitters see him and what really plays. And
- 32:17Speaker 2: you know, now, I mean, I feel like the last
- 32:18Speaker 2: couple of years we've been pretty much on the same page.
- 32:20Speaker 2: And for the most part, you know, you never always
- 32:22Speaker 2: gonna be on the same page. But yeah, I think,
- 32:26Speaker 2: you know, we got a pretty relationship now, and it's
- 32:28Speaker 2: just been fun. It's been really fun seeing them, you know,
- 32:30Speaker 2: clip these milestones and yeah.
- 32:33Speaker 1: All that. It's just crazy, man. I see him walk
- 32:35Speaker 1: around and like you know, especially during the games, you know,
- 32:40Speaker 1: when he he'll give up a couple of hits or something,
- 32:43Speaker 1: he gets he gets pissed up there. He gets really
- 32:45Speaker 1: mad up there.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:45Speaker 1: So I remember going in and me and you remember
- 32:50Speaker 1: we had a mound visit it. Me and you looked
- 32:52Speaker 1: at each other like, okay, who's going to talk neither.
- 32:55Speaker 2: No, that was I did not want to go out there,
- 32:58Speaker 2: and you start walking and started walking and you had
- 33:00Speaker 2: to how this is gonna go?
- 33:02Speaker 1: And I gave you that look like I'm not about
- 33:03Speaker 1: to say nothing.
- 33:04Speaker 2: This is walking on, like, mookie, you better got something.
- 33:06Speaker 2: I got I have nothing. You looked at me, all right,
- 33:14Speaker 2: there's a iPad that's gone.
- 33:17Speaker 1: Okay.
- 33:17Speaker 2: So that was That's about how the meeting went.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Exactly exactly how the meeting with I'm sorry, guys, so
- 33:26Speaker 1: we gotta have to We're gonna have to go on
- 33:27Speaker 1: the fly for a minute, all right. When you're going
- 33:30Speaker 1: up and talking to uh to the pictures, like do
- 33:33Speaker 1: you have certain things that you that you know you're
- 33:36Speaker 1: gonna say or do you have anything, and like, you know.
- 33:39Speaker 2: Yeah, sometimes, you know, sometimes it's really not to say
- 33:44Speaker 2: anything at all. It's just you, okay, you're doing great,
- 33:48Speaker 2: you know, just kind of fluff them up a little bit.
- 33:50Speaker 2: Now keep executing whatever, like there's really nothing to it
- 33:53Speaker 2: other than just kind of reset, slow the game down
- 33:55Speaker 2: and whatever. But yeah, there's times I remember in the
- 34:01Speaker 2: UH in the World series last year Kaspirao started, came five,
- 34:06Speaker 2: Joe Kelly came up. He's like, hey, if he's nervous,
- 34:09Speaker 2: go make a joke. I'm like, oh, all right, in
- 34:11Speaker 2: the middle of somebody like like what, like what do
- 34:14Speaker 2: you think? He's like, I don't know something about Like
- 34:16Speaker 2: you know, last year, Mickey was always talking about supporto
- 34:18Speaker 2: beers and stuff. So went I was today and I'm like,
- 34:21Speaker 2: you know, hey man, I don't know exactly what it said,
- 34:23Speaker 2: but hey man, like I want to celebrate tonight. I
- 34:26Speaker 2: want some support of beers, like you're good, like relaxing, okay,
- 34:30Speaker 2: And now he's like, oh, you can see him like
- 34:32Speaker 2: kind of like shipped his mindset from freaking out to
- 34:35Speaker 2: like we're good. This is still like it's still serious obviously,
- 34:40Speaker 2: but like all right, the catcher is cracking a little
- 34:42Speaker 2: bit of a joke or something like, I can relax,
- 34:46Speaker 2: and I think it helped him out a little bit.
- 34:47Speaker 2: But that was that was Joe's idea saying something like that.
- 34:49Speaker 1: Shout out to Joe Kelly.
- 34:50Speaker 2: Yeah right, Yeah, there's all kinds of different things you'll
- 34:53Speaker 2: tell you you talk about, you know, it's just kind
- 34:55Speaker 2: of knowing the guy and what they need and where
- 34:57Speaker 2: they're at all.
- 34:59Speaker 1: Right, So, uh, now it's time to bring relief and
- 35:02Speaker 1: get more baseball, get more with guyco. We're gonna take
- 35:07Speaker 1: a look at some moments that were caught on camera
- 35:11Speaker 1: during the game.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Oh wow, it caught between his knees. Wow, when was
- 35:19Speaker 2: I had not seen this.
- 35:20Speaker 1: I didn't see that either. That's a catch. Oh wow,
- 35:25Speaker 1: that's pretty dope.
- 35:26Speaker 2: That's cool. That's impressed. He got to that ball in the.
- 35:30Speaker 1: Over there, dude, he's I didn't realize how much ground
- 35:33Speaker 1: he covered until you know, we played and I really
- 35:35Speaker 1: get to see how fast, how fast he is. But
- 35:38Speaker 1: he's a good player, man. That was like a football catch.
- 35:42Speaker 2: You know, you're looking to see the ball at the
- 35:45Speaker 2: ground at all.
- 35:46Speaker 1: Yep. Uh, it's been really neat to see like the
- 35:51Speaker 1: influx of Japanese green, you know, Asian baseball players coming
- 35:59Speaker 1: in coming in to the to the game. Really just
- 36:01Speaker 1: that's that shows you how international. Yeah, it's yeah, all right,
- 36:08Speaker 1: what's the next one? Stop signed.
- 36:12Speaker 2: That Cruz? Oh yeah, he's just he's really fat.
- 36:18Speaker 1: I mean obviously you know, I mean we all know
- 36:21Speaker 1: how fast he is. So tell me about like throwing
- 36:25Speaker 1: him out on on the basis like, is that is
- 36:27Speaker 1: he one of the hard It's hard to do. Yeah,
- 36:29Speaker 1: if he gets a good jump, there's no chance. Oh
- 36:32Speaker 1: so this is it is purely on. If he gets
- 36:34Speaker 1: a good jump, you got no chance. But you know
- 36:35Speaker 1: it gets like a if he gets that jump, or
- 36:38Speaker 1: you know, he goes on a slidestep or something, maybe
- 36:40Speaker 1: he got a chance. You got a chance. But it's
- 36:42Speaker 1: gotta be perfect. It's got to be perfect. Okay, So
- 36:44Speaker 1: he's one of those guys like uh ruiz, Oh my gosh,
- 36:51Speaker 1: the jumps and everything he gets are ridiculous. All right,
- 36:55Speaker 1: let's say one more mm hmm.
- 36:58Speaker 2: He took his work. He's going to work on his laptop.
- 37:03Speaker 1: Okay, r I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.
- 37:08Speaker 1: You know, if this is your way to not kill
- 37:11Speaker 1: two birds in one story. You know how they they
- 37:14Speaker 1: let him in the stadium with it.
- 37:17Speaker 2: I guess, I don't know.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Maybe that.
- 37:19Speaker 2: I guess he can bring a laptop to a game.
- 37:22Speaker 2: I don't know, I've never seen ever seen it.
- 37:24Speaker 1: I feel like you maybe not, I don't know. I
- 37:26Speaker 1: guess it is what it is. So, uh, I do
- 37:30Speaker 1: want to talk a little bit about, uh, you signing
- 37:34Speaker 1: as a Dodger essentially gonna be a Dodger for life?
- 37:38Speaker 1: What what played into that? Well? Why did you do that? Yeah?
- 37:41Speaker 2: I think you know, I've I've loved being a Dodger,
- 37:45Speaker 2: love how the Dodgers are just about winning, winning more series,
- 37:49Speaker 2: and you know that's me. That's kind of all I
- 37:52Speaker 2: care about want to do. It's one more serious when
- 37:54Speaker 2: it comes to baseball. So yeah, yeah, the prices were right.
- 37:59Speaker 2: You know, there's a lot of negotiations for a few
- 38:01Speaker 2: years and stuff. But uh yeah, super happy, super super
- 38:05Speaker 2: is grateful, you know for the opportunity to you know,
- 38:08Speaker 2: where this uniform for another eight nine years or whatever.
- 38:11Speaker 1: Now. And I've asked pretty much everybody, what was the
- 38:16Speaker 1: first thing you bought after you signed?
- 38:19Speaker 2: First thing I bought? Uh, I got a new car.
- 38:24Speaker 2: You gotta go, but I already ordered it before I
- 38:26Speaker 2: signed it.
- 38:26Speaker 1: In all, that was the first thing you bought after man.
- 38:31Speaker 2: I don't know nothing like probably a house.
- 38:34Speaker 1: But okay, is that you didn't go, oh the house
- 38:37Speaker 1: in Vegas?
- 38:38Speaker 2: Uh no, we've had that. Okay, you had it before.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Okay. Yeah, so you didn't really buy anything, spinning, You
- 38:44Speaker 1: didn't buy buy Carara anything.
- 38:46Speaker 2: Or I mean she goes out and buys her own purses. Now, yeah,
- 38:49Speaker 2: I'll get her gift you know, birthday and Christmas and that.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:52Speaker 2: Yeah, she likes to go shop, you know, her and
- 38:55Speaker 2: some of her other you know friends that courage each other.
- 38:58Speaker 2: It's kind of funny. It's uh yeah, a little bit
- 39:00Speaker 2: of a joke now. So yeah, that's all right though.
- 39:03Speaker 1: I mean she she deserves it.
- 39:05Speaker 2: She has a whole down she's taking care of the girls.
- 39:08Speaker 2: And yeah, she's taking care of the house.
- 39:09Speaker 1: So how is it having uh two girls? Oh, it's
- 39:13Speaker 1: the best.
- 39:14Speaker 2: I'm total girl.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Dad, complete girl dad.
- 39:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I love They're the sweetest little things.
- 39:19Speaker 1: So you're the only masculine energy in the house.
- 39:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and I got two girl dogs, Like I'm totally outnumbered.
- 39:25Speaker 1: So like, what do you do?
- 39:28Speaker 2: You just have to just yeah, I don't know, like
- 39:31Speaker 2: a dressed up as a princess.
- 39:32Speaker 1: Sometimes the makeup, Yeah, make up.
- 39:36Speaker 2: I mean Charlotte. No, I haven't done the makeup yet,
- 39:38Speaker 2: haven't on the makeup, haven't done the nails painted, painted
- 39:41Speaker 2: some nails, Okay, I haven't had mind painted.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Are you gonna get you? I'm sure that'll comment. I'm sure.
- 39:47Speaker 1: So you're just gonna let her do makeup, put put
- 39:50Speaker 1: the paint your nails all the prom Yeah, I mean
- 39:54Speaker 1: you really don't have a choice because you.
- 39:56Speaker 2: Yeah, what are you gonna do?
- 39:57Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 39:57Speaker 2: So yeah, that's why I played golf in the room
- 40:00Speaker 2: or whatever.
- 40:01Speaker 1: So I make sure I invite you out to play golf, brother,
- 40:04Speaker 1: because you need some masculine around you. You just get
- 40:08Speaker 1: a guy dog get something, bro, Yeah I should. I
- 40:12Speaker 1: don't know. I got but three dogs.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Three dogs too muchos a lot.
- 40:16Speaker 1: Enough.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Yeah, we're not get anywhere dogs.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Okay. So before we wrap, I got a couple of things.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Your name Will Smith. There's three of you that I've
- 40:30Speaker 1: that I know about you, the actor yep, and then
- 40:36Speaker 1: the other the picture Smith. I know you. We pitched it.
- 40:40Speaker 1: We played against him in twenty twenty and then you know,
- 40:43Speaker 1: for the last couple of years. Was it weird when
- 40:46Speaker 1: you saw that his name was Will Smith the same way? Uh?
- 40:52Speaker 2: Not really.
- 40:53Speaker 1: I feel like if somebody else, if somebody else's name
- 40:55Speaker 1: was Marcus Bets or Milkie Bets, it would throw me
- 40:58Speaker 1: completely off.
- 40:59Speaker 2: I'm sure there's somebody out there has his same name.
- 41:01Speaker 2: Is you not baseball player?
- 41:02Speaker 1: But I haven't met him, so yeah, But but I
- 41:05Speaker 1: mean Will Smith is Smith, you know that's the most
- 41:07Speaker 1: popular name.
- 41:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and then Will is pretty popular. So yeah, I
- 41:11Speaker 2: atually went to high school with another Will Smith, so
- 41:13Speaker 2: you know, you know another you know another one. Yeah, wow,
- 41:16Speaker 2: he was a twin. Yeah, we played high school baseball.
- 41:18Speaker 1: The other day.
- 41:18Speaker 2: We had too Will Smith on high school baseball team.
- 41:20Speaker 1: So what was your your nickname?
- 41:23Speaker 2: It was Smitty?
- 41:25Speaker 1: What was his number?
- 41:26Speaker 2: Five? I don't know Will or I think he was
- 41:29Speaker 2: thirty maybe okay, maybe I was thirty. I don't remember
- 41:32Speaker 2: when I remember.
- 41:32Speaker 1: So you guys just it was just did you say him,
- 41:35Speaker 1: did you call him Will or what? Did you call him?
- 41:38Speaker 2: Colin Will or Colin Smith?
- 41:40Speaker 1: Sometimes? Okay, Okay, that sounds weird.
- 41:43Speaker 2: It wasn't like it was a little bit of weird,
- 41:45Speaker 2: but after, you know, one day it's kind of like whatever.
- 41:47Speaker 1: You Okay, so I do want to play this game.
- 41:52Speaker 1: I'm going to say a quote mm hm, and you
- 41:57Speaker 1: tell me if it's about you, okay, or the actor
- 42:01Speaker 1: Will Smith. To be compared to Will Smith is probably
- 42:06Speaker 1: one of the coolest things, because that's who I came
- 42:10Speaker 1: up admiring.
- 42:13Speaker 2: I mean, I hope it's about me, but probably probably
- 42:15Speaker 2: the other one. That's a cool thing, right it is?
- 42:19Speaker 1: Okay, So that's that's that's uh, you're right, that's Nick
- 42:22Speaker 1: Cannon on the actor okayah, Will Smith? Okay, So what
- 42:25Speaker 1: about this? He was everywhere, but you also never noticed
- 42:30Speaker 1: he was there.
- 42:33Speaker 2: That's probably me because I'm kind of quiet. That's definitely yeah.
- 42:37Speaker 1: Months months said that, Yeah he was that you were everywhere,
- 42:41Speaker 1: but you also never really know this. It's because I like,
- 42:44Speaker 1: I mean, he's right, like you are everywhere, but you're
- 42:46Speaker 1: really just quiet. Like you could go about your business
- 42:48Speaker 1: and you'll talk like you say what up in X,
- 42:50Speaker 1: Y and Z, and you're you talk when when you
- 42:54Speaker 1: talk to but you're usually like moving man, you're just
- 42:56Speaker 1: kind of hitting and then you gotta go do this
- 42:58Speaker 1: you got. It's a long day.
- 43:00Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a lot for you, a lot of preparation.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Okay, So when Will walked in a room, or Will
- 43:06Speaker 1: would do anything, you knew he was in charge, just
- 43:09Speaker 1: his presence, only a few people have that persona about them.
- 43:15Speaker 2: We'll go with the other one. Yeah.
- 43:17Speaker 1: So this guy, his name is zinc Pinkham. Oh zeke
- 43:23Speaker 1: m yeah, Zeke. He said when you walked in a room,
- 43:28Speaker 1: or if you really did anything, you knew you were
- 43:29Speaker 1: in you were in charge, just your presence. Only a
- 43:33Speaker 1: few people have that about them. And uh, I think
- 43:36Speaker 1: that kind of plays now just because like when you're
- 43:38Speaker 1: when you're back there in like that presence of I
- 43:41Speaker 1: mean you're leading, leading the league and guys throwing guys out,
- 43:44Speaker 1: I mean you're hailing the staff. I mean you're doing
- 43:48Speaker 1: you know, hitting third and fourth in the lineup. So
- 43:50Speaker 1: you're really, uh you really your presence is felt. But
- 43:56Speaker 1: you don't necessarily have to talk, you know what I'm saying.
- 43:58Speaker 1: It's just you just have to be there, and I
- 44:00Speaker 1: think everyone feels comfortable. And then when you do talk,
- 44:03Speaker 1: I think everybody loves it as well. So if you
- 44:05Speaker 1: want to chatter a little more. Well, that's very end.
- 44:08Speaker 2: That's that's welcome.
- 44:09Speaker 1: It's welcome, Okay. Last one, Will Smith is just an
- 44:14Speaker 1: all around amazing talent and really funny. Again, I'm gonna
- 44:19Speaker 1: go with the other one. Yeah, that's that's well, that's
- 44:20Speaker 1: the actor Wilson. He is. He's talented. Yeah, he's very,
- 44:24Speaker 1: very talented and very funny. Doc actually said that you're
- 44:29Speaker 1: not really that funny.
- 44:30Speaker 2: I know, he called me out saying I don't make
- 44:32Speaker 2: jokes or anything like that. It was a couple of
- 44:34Speaker 2: years ago or what do you say, Vanilla.
- 44:36Speaker 1: Yeah, Vanilla there said that's your song. You had the
- 44:39Speaker 1: Jack carlosong. Yeah, Vanilla, you played right into it. So
- 44:44Speaker 1: but yes, maybe well before we wrap, Man, thanks for
- 44:46Speaker 1: coming on the show. I know, like I said, I know,
- 44:48Speaker 1: you don't do things like this, so it's it's really
- 44:51Speaker 1: good that you got to get on here and really
- 44:53Speaker 1: kind of show your personality a little bit.
- 44:55Speaker 2: Yeah, appreciate you having me on here. Man.
- 44:57Speaker 1: It's of course, of course, and thanks for watching. On
- 45:00Speaker 1: Base presented by Geico Get More Baseball, Get More with Geico. Thanks.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Thanks man, I'll see you guys next time. One on
- 45:09Speaker 1: Base
