- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna! Ready for another tiny Dutch lesson? Last time we cracked ordinal numbers, but today I want to talk about... right now. Lucas: Right now? What do you mean? Luna: Like, what I'm doing at this very moment. How do I say 'I am reading' in Dutch? Lucas: Ah, the present continuous! In Dutch, we use 'aan het' plus the infinitive. So 'I am reading' is 'Ik ben aan het lezen.' Let me say that slowly: Ik ben aan het lezen. Luna: Ik ben aan het lezen. Lucas: Perfect! 'Aan het' goes after the conjugated verb 'ben'. So 'Ik ben aan het lezen.' Luna: Ik ben aan het lezen. Got it. And if I want to ask someone what they are doing? Lucas: Great question. 'Wat ben je aan het doen?' – What are you doing? Let's hear it: Wat ben je aan het doen? Luna: Wat ben je aan het doen? Lucas: Yes! 'Wat' means what, 'ben je' is you are, and 'aan het doen' – doing. So together: Wat ben je aan het doen? Luna: Wat ben je aan het doen? Okay, and for a third person, like he is cooking? Lucas: Then it's 'Hij is aan het koken.' He is cooking. Hij is aan het koken. Luna: Hij is aan het koken. So the pattern is: subject + conjugated 'zijn' + aan het + infinitive verb. Lucas: Exactly, Luna! You nailed it. Let's imagine a little scene. I'm sitting here with a book. What am I doing? Luna: Uhh... 'U bent aan het lezen'? No, 'jij' – 'Je bent aan het lezen'? Wait, 'Ik ben aan het lezen'? Lucas: Almost! For me, it's 'Ik ben aan het lezen.' But if you're talking to me, you say 'Je bent aan het lezen' – You are reading. So: Je bent aan het lezen. Luna: Je bent aan het lezen. Right. So when I describe what you're doing, I use 'je'. Got it. Okay, now you ask me what I'm doing. Lucas: Wat ben je aan het doen, Luna? Luna: Ik ben aan het leren! I am learning! Did I say that right? Lucas: Perfect! Ik ben aan het leren. You're learning Dutch. Now let's add someone else. Imagine mijn broer is in de keuken. Hij is aan het koken. Luna: Hij is aan het koken. Easy! So if I see my sister reading, I can say 'Zij is aan het lezen'? Lucas: Exactly. Zij is aan het lezen. You've got the pattern. Let's do a quick drill. I'll say a subject, you finish with the correct phrase. Luna: Bring it on. Lucas: Hij. Luna: Hij is aan het lezen? Or koken? Um... let's stick with 'lezen'. Hij is aan het lezen. Lucas: Yes! Next: Jullie. Luna: Jullie zijn aan het lezen? Jullie zijn aan het lezen. Lucas: Perfect. Jullie zijn aan het lezen. You're all reading. Great work, Luna. Luna: Thanks! So now I can describe what's happening around me. This is such a useful pattern. Lucas: It really is. And you know, Fexingo is all about making these patterns stick. If this show has been helping you make actual progress with Dutch, know that we make it ad-free thanks to a handful of listeners who chip in monthly at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it's pretty cool that the show stays listener-supported. Every bit helps us keep creating these tiny lessons. Lucas: Exactly. So, back to practice. Let's take our three phrases and put them in a mini conversation. I'll be person A, you be person B. Luna: Okay, let's do it. Lucas: Hallo Luna. Wat ben je aan het doen? Luna: Ik ben aan het lezen. En jij? Wat ben jij aan het doen? Lucas: Ik ben aan het koken. Mijn broer is ook aan het koken. Luna: Oh, jullie zijn allebei aan het koken. Gezellig! Lucas: Yes, cozy. And you got to use 'zijn' with 'jullie' naturally. Awesome. Luna: This was a great episode. I feel like I can actually describe what's happening now. Lucas: That's the goal. Practice saying 'Ik ben aan het lezen', 'Wat ben je aan het doen?', and 'Hij is aan het koken' throughout your day. You'll have them down in no time. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. See you next time! Lucas: Doei, tot ziens!
