- 0:02Speaker 1: Did missus Delfhire tuck? No, because she was wearing those
- 0:06Speaker 1: long skirts, but she was also wearing pantyhose. I if
- 0:10Speaker 1: Robin Williams character is assists man, I don't think he would.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I don't think he would talk No. I I think
- 0:15Speaker 1: I think she tucked for the experience to feel fish,
- 0:19Speaker 1: to feel fish, you wanted to feel the soft and
- 0:21Speaker 1: Quint Welcome to Like a Virgin the show where we
- 0:29Speaker 1: give yesterday's pop culture today's tanks. I'm Rose, damn you.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I am Francrondo, and I love that you gave that
- 0:38Speaker 1: a What did you do to die? To die today?
- 0:40Speaker 1: At a minute or two until two? You really think
- 0:43Speaker 1: distinctly hard to say, but hard or still to do?
- 0:45Speaker 1: The um? Did you ever have to what other like
- 0:48Speaker 1: kind of did you have to do? Buddy gum money
- 0:51Speaker 1: and cut to cut? Oh? I had to do all
- 0:53Speaker 1: of them, you know, a girl? Oh, I know. I
- 0:56Speaker 1: literally went to acting school and to do all of them.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Speak red leather, yellow leather, red leather, yellow leather, red leather,
- 1:02Speaker 1: yellow leather. Speaking of acting school, I did ditch my
- 1:06Speaker 1: last class. Good good. I feel like after after your
- 1:12Speaker 1: venting session on air last week, I think that was
- 1:15Speaker 1: the right choice to make. Well, I don't think anybody
- 1:18Speaker 1: in the class like well knows who I am or
- 1:21Speaker 1: like what that I have that I'm talking. No, I
- 1:23Speaker 1: meant the right choice for you. Oh, thank you, thank
- 1:25Speaker 1: you because you because you m had so many um uh,
- 1:31Speaker 1: you know, negative things to say about it, like, yeah,
- 1:36Speaker 1: I really did, and I should I should also say
- 1:38Speaker 1: that I just for the record that I did not ditch,
- 1:41Speaker 1: so to speak. It is it was like my last
- 1:43Speaker 1: full day in la or was and was supposed to be.
- 1:48Speaker 1: You were supposed to be in New York today, but
- 1:51Speaker 1: you're not. I texted you bright and early this morning.
- 1:53Speaker 1: I texted you Taylor Swift's masterpiece Welcome to New York,
- 1:57Speaker 1: which I thought was really nice and welcoming of me. Yeah,
- 2:00Speaker 1: and you were still in Los Angeles. No. I really
- 2:04Speaker 1: appreciated the message, even though I do kind of think
- 2:06Speaker 1: that's the worst song on nineteen eighty nine, and let's
- 2:10Speaker 1: not I don't want to start a fight or the show. Well,
- 2:13Speaker 1: I don't think it's bad. I just think it's you know,
- 2:15Speaker 1: my least face. No, no no, no, move on. Oh my god.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Um well, I had let me tell you I saw
- 2:21Speaker 1: Phoebe on Sunday. It was quite lovely. We we missed you.
- 2:24Speaker 1: We wished you were at my moving sale. Oh I
- 2:26Speaker 1: thought you guys were just hooked up. Yeah, we Um.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Phoebe came to pick up a night a night stand,
- 2:33Speaker 1: some some dishware after hustling me on prices. Is that right, Phoebe?
- 2:39Speaker 1: We really had some negotiation happening. So um, how generally
- 2:44Speaker 1: was the sale? Did you get rid of lots of stuff? Rose?
- 2:48Speaker 1: I actually don't think I was prepared for what actually happened.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I sent out an email the night before that was like,
- 2:57Speaker 1: do not come before noon if I hear a buzz
- 3:00Speaker 1: before noon? Like, no, I didn't like, I will not respond.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Twelve oh one, I get a buzz, I go down
- 3:09Speaker 1: to like let this person in. There is a line
- 3:13Speaker 1: of more than twenty people. LA's Hottest Club is easily
- 3:18Speaker 1: easily two dozen people waiting outside my apartment. I was
- 3:23Speaker 1: so gooped, like and I honestly, here's the thing. Did
- 3:27Speaker 1: you take any of nonloads that day? I did? I did?
- 3:30Speaker 1: I take seventy five loads? The guy that took seventy
- 3:32Speaker 1: five loads literally lives a few blocks away from that apartment.
- 3:35Speaker 1: He was probably at the sale. He was probably what wait,
- 3:39Speaker 1: did you wait? Phoebe just told us that she hooked
- 3:42Speaker 1: up with someone in the bathroom a friends moving sale.
- 3:45Speaker 1: What Phoebe, Phoebe, Phoebe, are you making an appearance on
- 3:48Speaker 1: the show? I need? Actually, do you want to share?
- 3:51Speaker 1: Can you? You're like, I can't. Well, the well, the
- 3:55Speaker 1: versions will just have to you know, well, this will
- 3:58Speaker 1: remain cloaked in mystery. Okay, this will remain cloaked in mystery. Um,
- 4:02Speaker 1: all you need to know is that, um, you know Rose,
- 4:05Speaker 1: you and I we had We've had a lot of
- 4:07Speaker 1: trials and tribulations with Los Angeles flight culture. It's really
- 4:10Speaker 1: difficult to get people to show up for things on time,
- 4:13Speaker 1: let alone show up to things at all. And now
- 4:15Speaker 1: I figured out that if I ever want any of
- 4:18Speaker 1: my friends, loved one's, colleagues, followers to show up to something,
- 4:21Speaker 1: all I have to do is tell them that I'm
- 4:22Speaker 1: having in a state sale and they will show up
- 4:25Speaker 1: on time because they think you're dead. And I have
- 4:27Speaker 1: to pay respects to your your your exquisite corpse. And
- 4:31Speaker 1: you know, I use the word I use the term
- 4:33Speaker 1: of state sale like as a joke. And I don't
- 4:35Speaker 1: quite know if everyone there thought it was a joke. Um,
- 4:38Speaker 1: but I did sell really nice stuff. So you're a
- 4:41Speaker 1: state sale because I finally killed you, Yes, because you
- 4:44Speaker 1: finally killed me. But um, anyways, what did you do
- 4:48Speaker 1: this weekend? Rose? Um? I had um sex, lot of sex.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I am in such I know we talked about that.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I was like trying to jump start a slut era. Honey,
- 5:04Speaker 1: it has been started. It has been the parties as
- 5:07Speaker 1: in the immortal words of Pink. Um, what is the
- 5:10Speaker 1: actually what is the pink song that I'm referencing? U.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Let let's get this party started. Yeah, I get this
- 5:18Speaker 1: fatties dat it Um? Yeah, I am a whore. I'm
- 5:23Speaker 1: I am in. I am in a whore era. Um.
- 5:31Speaker 1: You know, this weekend I had some sex. I went
- 5:35Speaker 1: to a screening of the classic animated film Anastasia um
- 5:42Speaker 1: with a friend of the show and and friend Hunter
- 5:46Speaker 1: Harris at Nighthawk, which was, Um, it was like a
- 5:50Speaker 1: BuzzFeed comments section in a movie theater. Was there was there,
- 5:54Speaker 1: you know, a talk back afterward about about the Russian
- 5:57Speaker 1: dynasty and no nobody Scott this guy did introduce the
- 6:02Speaker 1: movie and he felt it necessary to tell us that
- 6:04Speaker 1: he was gay, and it was like, Babe, we knew, honey,
- 6:08Speaker 1: you're introducing Anastasia, you're a homosexual. I also ran into
- 6:13Speaker 1: a Rosebud while I was out furniture shopping. That was
- 6:16Speaker 1: very nice. I love my fans. There were many Rosebuds
- 6:20Speaker 1: furniture shopping at my at my sale this this weekend.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Who I forgot They wanted to all send their love
- 6:25Speaker 1: to you. A lot of people saying a lot of
- 6:27Speaker 1: people at the sales saying say hi to Rose, say
- 6:29Speaker 1: hi to Rose, Um, why is a Rose here? A
- 6:32Speaker 1: lot of people that didn't know that you're not in
- 6:34Speaker 1: La anymore. A lot of realized that is. Some people
- 6:39Speaker 1: don't don't seem to be don't seem to have caught
- 6:41Speaker 1: onto the fact that I switched coasts. No, No, A
- 6:44Speaker 1: lot of people, you know, still kind of figuring it out.
- 6:46Speaker 1: And that's how you like it. You like to keep
- 6:48Speaker 1: people on your toes about your exact location at any time.
- 6:52Speaker 1: And I want an air of mystery around me at
- 6:56Speaker 1: literally all times. And myself take I take a lot
- 6:59Speaker 1: of pride in and actually I'm very profitable in um
- 7:04Speaker 1: making sure that no one knows where I live at
- 7:07Speaker 1: any time, nor what I do for a living. Um,
- 7:10Speaker 1: and I think that that is just something that listen
- 7:12Speaker 1: that just because you don't do anything for a living,
- 7:14Speaker 1: because I don't, because I don't do anything of us
- 7:17Speaker 1: and I don't have jobs, I don't do anything, and
- 7:20Speaker 1: I don't live anywhere, and that is just what should
- 7:23Speaker 1: be said. Well that's all about to change, mama, it is. Um.
- 7:27Speaker 1: You know what else I did this weekend? So on
- 7:29Speaker 1: on Friday night, after watching drag Race, some friends and
- 7:33Speaker 1: I decided to start rewatching and just like that, which
- 7:37Speaker 1: I have not watched so since it was first airing,
- 7:39Speaker 1: so what the fuck? And then then I just and
- 7:44Speaker 1: then um, one of them had to leave because they're
- 7:46Speaker 1: like family. Cat died and so I just so I
- 7:49Speaker 1: just kept watching and just like that, and then watched
- 7:53Speaker 1: it the next day too, and watched the whole season
- 7:56Speaker 1: in like two days. And it it really is as
- 8:01Speaker 1: insane as we remember it being. It's like, it's not
- 8:06Speaker 1: that it's bad, like this is the thing. It's not,
- 8:10Speaker 1: it's not, but it just the things that we remember
- 8:14Speaker 1: about it, like the the chadas of it all, the
- 8:17Speaker 1: like extreme wokeness, that all is as bad as you
- 8:22Speaker 1: remember it because it's such an overcorrection like that is
- 8:29Speaker 1: that directly comes from all the criticisms that were always
- 8:33Speaker 1: you know, leveled at Sex in the City that it
- 8:34Speaker 1: didn't reflect the real New York City because it wasn't diverse,
- 8:38Speaker 1: and you know the ways it treated you know, queer
- 8:41Speaker 1: people and people of color, and it just like it
- 8:45Speaker 1: just corrected those things in the wrong way instead of
- 8:49Speaker 1: actually folding queer people and people of color organically into
- 8:56Speaker 1: the story, it like made Chaday. Yeah. But you know,
- 9:02Speaker 1: and like every person on the show is like a
- 9:05Speaker 1: non binary diva, I mean kind of. Yeah. I feel
- 9:11Speaker 1: like Miranda's going to transition at some point. I think
- 9:13Speaker 1: it's happening. Well, did you see that tweet that was
- 9:16Speaker 1: going around of the photo that someone had taken in
- 9:19Speaker 1: LA and it said Chay and Miranda are fighting on
- 9:22Speaker 1: my street. Oh no, yeah, so I do think that Chay. Well,
- 9:29Speaker 1: this is what I'm hoping and what I'm thinking, Okay,
- 9:32Speaker 1: is that you know, Miranda will go to La with Chay.
- 9:35Speaker 1: That's how the second season will start. But I think
- 9:37Speaker 1: they'll break up with it'll break up pretty yeah, And
- 9:40Speaker 1: because Miranda has to come back to New York and
- 9:42Speaker 1: I think they'll want to get rid of Chay. I
- 9:44Speaker 1: think so that he's more of a looming presence as
- 9:47Speaker 1: opposed to an every day did I say he You
- 9:51Speaker 1: did well, well, Fran just miss gendered Chay Diaz. Oh
- 9:59Speaker 1: my god, I'm sorry. I'm just sorry the jokes. I
- 10:03Speaker 1: couldn't have written it better myself. I'm honestly disoriented. I
- 10:07Speaker 1: the non binary trans podcaster misgendered the non binary trans podcast.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I honestly okay, maybe I will tell the virgins. Maybe
- 10:16Speaker 1: maybe I'm just kind of still in a certain headspace
- 10:18Speaker 1: after seeing radios out at Comment Everybody a few weeks ago,
- 10:22Speaker 1: where where they were giving heat, maybe they were giving
- 10:24Speaker 1: he him in the kind of leather snapback they were
- 10:27Speaker 1: they were wearing, and it just it stuck with me.
- 10:30Speaker 1: But I that I appreciate you holding me accountable in
- 10:32Speaker 1: that moment. I always be. I WI shouldn't be perceiving
- 10:35Speaker 1: gender at any time, at any point um in any way,
- 10:39Speaker 1: thank you. Should we not shall not be perceiving gender,
- 10:43Speaker 1: No never. We shouldn't be assuming gender, but we should
- 10:47Speaker 1: be perceiving it. No no, no, gender should never be perceived.
- 10:49Speaker 1: We should just actually see everyone as like just faceless,
- 10:53Speaker 1: gooey like orbs, just these floating balls of light. You're
- 10:57Speaker 1: really reminding me of what I was doing this weekend,
- 10:59Speaker 1: that floating balls of light onni Okay, okay, here's I
- 11:04Speaker 1: have a bone to pick with men. Okay, Why why
- 11:09Speaker 1: do you jerk off when we're going to hook up?
- 11:11Speaker 1: Why do you jerk off before I get there? Do? People?
- 11:17Speaker 1: I realized that I'm being yeah, and I realized that
- 11:20Speaker 1: I'm being hypocritical because I said recently, oh yeah, I
- 11:24Speaker 1: like to jerk off for I have a hookup. But
- 11:27Speaker 1: I know, I know myself, and I know that for me,
- 11:32Speaker 1: that's a warm up. And then I have at least
- 11:33Speaker 1: two more nuts left in me. And these fuckers I
- 11:38Speaker 1: show up and they're fucking soft. And it's like, it's
- 11:41Speaker 1: one thing if you like can't get hard and you're
- 11:45Speaker 1: just like it's whatever, Like it's fine, don't worry about it.
- 11:48Speaker 1: But like, if you can't get hard and you want
- 11:50Speaker 1: me to suck your dick pretending like it's hard in
- 11:53Speaker 1: an effort to get you hard, No, no, no, no no
- 11:55Speaker 1: no no, this is not improv class baser. Yes I'm
- 12:01Speaker 1: saying I'm saying no, but I'm saying no, but um
- 12:05Speaker 1: no and no but you're soft, No but you're soft. Yeah,
- 12:10Speaker 1: I don't. I don't really want to to solve the
- 12:12Speaker 1: Swedish puzzle box, that is, how do I get you
- 12:15Speaker 1: hard again? Um, Sometimes, especially with guys these days or
- 12:19Speaker 1: people with dicks who are just you know, we're they're
- 12:22Speaker 1: onto antidepressants, on adderall on estradile, on all of the
- 12:27Speaker 1: things of the above, all of the all of the
- 12:29Speaker 1: some of us for some of us, all of the above,
- 12:32Speaker 1: alex some some divas, yeah, some divas among us. I
- 12:37Speaker 1: have multiple Bonard deterrence in our system and therefore, you know,
- 12:40Speaker 1: can't get it up. But like, if I have to
- 12:42Speaker 1: figure that out, it's like that is that is a
- 12:45Speaker 1: I really care about you. I'm going to figure if
- 12:46Speaker 1: I'm going to figure that out for you. And if
- 12:48Speaker 1: I don't, then you don't have to be hard and
- 12:51Speaker 1: and that's okay, Well we'll find It's like, I'm fine
- 12:54Speaker 1: if you're not hard. I don't feel any sort of
- 12:56Speaker 1: way about it. If you're still down to clown. You know,
- 12:59Speaker 1: if I know them like I feel like I do,
- 13:02Speaker 1: if I already kind of know what their thing is like,
- 13:04Speaker 1: if I know you love nipples or if I know
- 13:06Speaker 1: you love x y Z. It is kind of fun
- 13:09Speaker 1: sometimes to be like, Okay, let's get your engines revved, sweetie. Um,
- 13:13Speaker 1: but I uh yeah, no, it's it's it requires a
- 13:17Speaker 1: lot of a lot of patients, time consideration, and uh
- 13:21Speaker 1: that's just those are things that you and I that
- 13:23Speaker 1: girls have. Yeah, I don't have the spoons. Don't have
- 13:28Speaker 1: to care about to care about your flaccid penis, especially
- 13:33Speaker 1: not when I I just feel like I give so much.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I'm always hard. I am. It's just never been a
- 13:43Speaker 1: problem for me. I like, don't I don't get it.
- 13:45Speaker 1: And I just feel similarly like, um, I can't get
- 13:50Speaker 1: I'm hard right now, I'm hard right And I on
- 13:54Speaker 1: the flip side, um can't really get hard for the
- 13:56Speaker 1: boner deterrence aforementioned. And so you know, you just you
- 13:59Speaker 1: just pop up viagara, much like Samantha in season two
- 14:03Speaker 1: of is that season two of Sex in the City. Yeah,
- 14:05Speaker 1: I watched it the other night because after I finished
- 14:06Speaker 1: and just like that, what did I do? I started
- 14:08Speaker 1: watching Sex in the City. I'm Samantha getting addicted to
- 14:11Speaker 1: VIAGRAA is actually one of the funniest things that's ever
- 14:15Speaker 1: happened on Sex in the City, her singing operatically as
- 14:19Speaker 1: the guy Fox her Yeah, comedy go. She did that
- 14:24Speaker 1: a couple of times. She sort of had an operatic
- 14:28Speaker 1: crescendo more than one. She's kind of giving some and
- 14:32Speaker 1: she's also kind of you being Hello, Hello, don't are
- 14:51Speaker 1: you there? God? It's me Missus Doubtfire? Hello? Hello? Why?
- 14:59Speaker 1: Why that? Why that is? Why is it so funny?
- 15:07Speaker 1: Because it is? Because it is? Um Okay, So, Missus
- 15:14Speaker 1: Doubtfire is a trans icon. That's where we're starting. That's
- 15:20Speaker 1: where we're starting. Definitive statement, fully supported by every person
- 15:25Speaker 1: on this podcast by on iHeartRadio Incorporated llc UM critics,
- 15:33Speaker 1: all podcasts were aware. Yes, yes, Missus Doubtfire is a
- 15:37Speaker 1: trans icon. Yes, before Disclosure, there was Missus before Doubtfire
- 15:44Speaker 1: featured in Disclosure. Yeah it is. It is because let's
- 15:49Speaker 1: in a negative way, right, yeah, so is this ship
- 15:54Speaker 1: is we versions? We are so excited to do that.
- 16:00Speaker 1: As we've said before, Missus Doubtfire was a primordial episode
- 16:04Speaker 1: of this podcast, a pre eminent practice episode that rosen
- 16:09Speaker 1: I did. Um So rosen I were not virgins to
- 16:12Speaker 1: this movie. Obviously it is. It is as Monocultures and
- 16:18Speaker 1: one of the formative films of my childhood. It's also
- 16:20Speaker 1: the reason i'm trans It's the reason it's the reason
- 16:23Speaker 1: I'm trans. No. When I went, when I went to
- 16:26Speaker 1: callen Lord fateful day in February, I said, give me
- 16:31Speaker 1: the Missus Doubtfire special stat when I when I go
- 16:36Speaker 1: to Spain for my ffs, I'm showing them a photo
- 16:38Speaker 1: of Missus Doubtfire. Um of m Euphagenia doubtfire if Agenia. Yeah. Um, okay,
- 16:46Speaker 1: so wait I we're jumping up going back. So um
- 16:50Speaker 1: missus Doutfire obviously was mentioned in disclosure in a negative way.
- 16:53Speaker 1: And yeah, it does belong to this era of just
- 16:56Speaker 1: to like level set with visions. It does belong to
- 16:59Speaker 1: this era of movies where men dressing up as women.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Whether it was like um, Big Mama's House. Yeah, quote
- 17:07Speaker 1: quote unquote Big Mama's House, Um tutsie, which I've actually
- 17:11Speaker 1: never seen. Um, Like these movies were in like men
- 17:14Speaker 1: dressing up as women are like hiding out as women. Um.
- 17:18Speaker 1: And that's like the gag was like, you know, the
- 17:20Speaker 1: peak of comedy and it was still is still still is.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Oh I don't care, And this is if this is
- 17:30Speaker 1: the episode that finally guts us canceled, you know, be
- 17:34Speaker 1: it so, be it so for anyone who is a
- 17:39Speaker 1: virgin to missus doubtfire. It is in nineteen ninety three
- 17:43Speaker 1: UM comedy starring Robin Williams, who is daddy, Let's be clear.
- 17:50Speaker 1: And also in this film is Mommy is mother mother?
- 17:55Speaker 1: So um so it starts Robin Williams, also Sally Field
- 17:59Speaker 1: icon brasnin Harvey Fierstein like this cast is stacked. It
- 18:04Speaker 1: was directed by UM Chris Columbus, who also directed the
- 18:08Speaker 1: home alone films the first two Harry Potter movies jk Rowling,
- 18:14Speaker 1: jk Rowling, UM Connection, It's all It's it's all connected.
- 18:20Speaker 1: This this was the film that radicalized jk Rowling as
- 18:25Speaker 1: as a rad film. I was gonna say that's that's
- 18:27Speaker 1: Actually the only thing that connects us to to jk
- 18:30Speaker 1: Rowling is that we this is both our favorite films. Yeah,
- 18:34Speaker 1: for very different reasons, for very different reasons. Yeah, but
- 18:37Speaker 1: there's some overlaps. So the movie. The movie is about UM,
- 18:42Speaker 1: a man named, quote unquote, man named Daniel Hillard who
- 18:46Speaker 1: um you know. He He and his wife Sally Field
- 18:50Speaker 1: UM have three kids. And their marriages and trouble and
- 18:53Speaker 1: he's a voice actor, like I think, like the opening
- 18:56Speaker 1: of the film is so iconic where he's doing, um,
- 18:59Speaker 1: the the animation dubbing and um, you know, sally Field
- 19:04Speaker 1: decides to divorce him and he is, you know, not
- 19:09Speaker 1: not going to be allowed to see his kids, and
- 19:12Speaker 1: so as a way to get to spend time with them,
- 19:15Speaker 1: m he finds out that sally Field is looking for
- 19:17Speaker 1: a nanny and he creates, with the help of his
- 19:19Speaker 1: brother Harvey Fierstein, this character of missus Doubtfire, who's this
- 19:23Speaker 1: older English like the perfect like quintessential older English lady
- 19:30Speaker 1: who you know, comes in and cares for the children
- 19:32Speaker 1: and sort of like, um, changes everyone everyone's lives for
- 19:36Speaker 1: the better, but it's actually their dad. In drag bootleg
- 19:40Speaker 1: transsexual Mary Poppins is kind of like what is happening
- 19:43Speaker 1: a little bit? Yes, um and um, you know this
- 19:48Speaker 1: film was a huge, a huge success. It grossed four
- 19:54Speaker 1: hundred and forty one point three million dollars on a
- 19:57Speaker 1: twenty five million dollar budget. Um, I did not know that. Yes,
- 20:04Speaker 1: as Phoebe just said, the best drag show in the world,
- 20:07Speaker 1: the most successful drag show in history, RuPaul wishes, and
- 20:13Speaker 1: it really is a film that has I think stood
- 20:16Speaker 1: the test of time. It was made into a physical
- 20:19Speaker 1: that I don't think was super successful. It's one of
- 20:22Speaker 1: my favorite nineties movies. It I think at the time
- 20:27Speaker 1: like spoke to me as a child, like I of
- 20:31Speaker 1: course I could make jokes about you know, like the
- 20:33Speaker 1: cross drive site and transniss of it all. But I
- 20:35Speaker 1: think the thing that I really um liked about it
- 20:40Speaker 1: as a kid was thought it was a story about
- 20:42Speaker 1: a family going through a divorce, and I'm a child
- 20:45Speaker 1: of divorce, oh and so, and I think like particularly that,
- 20:48Speaker 1: particularly this time in the nineties, there was a I
- 20:52Speaker 1: don't I don't know a lot of people from that
- 20:54Speaker 1: time my life whose parents didn't get divorced. And so
- 20:57Speaker 1: I think maybe like this was the right moment for
- 21:01Speaker 1: this movie in the culture. And something else that I
- 21:04Speaker 1: think should be noted and part of why I think
- 21:08Speaker 1: the reason Missus Doutfire stands the test of time. But
- 21:10Speaker 1: despite being quote unquote problematic in some ways, is that
- 21:14Speaker 1: Robin Williams is there's no one who can do what
- 21:18Speaker 1: he does what he did and does in this movie
- 21:21Speaker 1: so expertly and perfectly like he has an unpredictability and
- 21:26Speaker 1: so many of the things that he says on screen
- 21:28Speaker 1: are completely improvised. M And I don't know. Yeah, I
- 21:32Speaker 1: just I'm sorry Phoebe Phoebe, Phoebe just dropping in the
- 21:36Speaker 1: chat that she had that that I wanted Sally Field
- 21:39Speaker 1: and Missus Doutfire to hook up, which like, listen, we
- 21:41Speaker 1: can find you that fan fiction or that fan art.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Sure it exists to back up rows. When you do
- 21:48Speaker 1: you remember like first seeing this movie, Yeah, I'm pretty
- 21:52Speaker 1: sure I saw it in theaters. Okay, do you remember, like,
- 21:57Speaker 1: even if it wasn't that viewing, do you remember just
- 22:00Speaker 1: how the movie made you feel as a kid, because
- 22:02Speaker 1: I feel like I can kind of pinpoint it. Yeah,
- 22:06Speaker 1: I um loved. I have a very you know, vivid
- 22:11Speaker 1: memories of especially that opening scene where he's in the
- 22:14Speaker 1: recording booth, and I think like this was one of
- 22:17Speaker 1: the first times that Robin Williams became, um, you know,
- 22:22Speaker 1: a figure in my childhood, like through this film. Um,
- 22:27Speaker 1: I think mostly like my experience of it were impressions
- 22:30Speaker 1: like Missus Doubtfire with the cake on her face, and um,
- 22:35Speaker 1: Pierce Brosnan getting out of the pool was like an
- 22:38Speaker 1: early like erotic memory of mine and um, you know,
- 22:42Speaker 1: Sally Field kind kind of being like the shrill like
- 22:46Speaker 1: working mom was very I mean, um, not not I
- 22:51Speaker 1: wouldn't want to say true to my own life experience,
- 22:53Speaker 1: but like it was certainly familiar. Um, and yeah, I
- 22:58Speaker 1: just thought like this was there. I do think there
- 23:04Speaker 1: was like kind of a golden age of like family
- 23:09Speaker 1: comedies around this time, because they think later those morphed
- 23:14Speaker 1: into in the later nineties, those morphed into rom coms.
- 23:17Speaker 1: And this was really like fun for the whole family
- 23:20Speaker 1: and it was like specifically a family story and there
- 23:24Speaker 1: wasn't really any romance in it. And that's something kind
- 23:29Speaker 1: of amazing about it, as like a cultural object. Is
- 23:32Speaker 1: that me some a kid who was like so so
- 23:35Speaker 1: sheltered somehow this was like slipped through the c This
- 23:39Speaker 1: is something that all parents, so many different backgrounds still
- 23:43Speaker 1: wanted to watch even though it's about like a cross stresser,
- 23:46Speaker 1: and um, you know, in terms of like my earliest memories,
- 23:50Speaker 1: I do I watched it with my family. Like, my
- 23:53Speaker 1: family loved this movie. There was nothing kind of like
- 23:56Speaker 1: weird or problematic about it. But I remember the moment
- 24:00Speaker 1: where Robin Williams goes over to Harvey Harvey Fierstein's house, right,
- 24:04Speaker 1: and he's a fagot and they're putting him in drag
- 24:09Speaker 1: and I remember being like, what the fuck is happening?
- 24:12Speaker 1: Like what's going on? Like it like seminal like gender
- 24:15Speaker 1: things in me were terrified. I was like, this is
- 24:18Speaker 1: so scary and I've never seen this before. That scene
- 24:22Speaker 1: definitely wasn't awakening, and I think for me what it
- 24:25Speaker 1: was was, I it was my first experience of, even
- 24:31Speaker 1: though I didn't recognize that at a time, seeing other
- 24:34Speaker 1: queer people having a shared language and wanting to understand
- 24:41Speaker 1: the things that they were referencing, Like when she looked
- 24:44Speaker 1: kind of like Barbara and they started singing make a Match,
- 24:48Speaker 1: I was like, wait what. I want to know what
- 24:50Speaker 1: that's from, Like I want to know where these inside
- 24:53Speaker 1: jokes are coming from. And that, I think is like
- 24:58Speaker 1: an experience that all queer people have in common. And
- 25:02Speaker 1: one of the things that you know, like unifies us
- 25:04Speaker 1: as a community is like our taste and the pieces
- 25:07Speaker 1: of culture that we pick out for ourselves. Um and
- 25:12Speaker 1: I think that scenes specifically, like even though rub Williams
- 25:15Speaker 1: in this movie is not queer allegedly, although I think
- 25:21Speaker 1: an argument could be made, and maybe we'll try to
- 25:23Speaker 1: make that argument episode. The graduate thesis is that we
- 25:26Speaker 1: could pull up right now that people would have probably written,
- 25:29Speaker 1: but that to me felt like you know, some gay's
- 25:33Speaker 1: key keying hmm, And it was, and it was also
- 25:37Speaker 1: very satisfying. Makeup Vermontage as well. Oh, the most satisfying. Yeah,
- 25:41Speaker 1: it's like that, and Pretty Woman. I think we're like
- 25:45Speaker 1: the like pro too early nineties movie makeo Vermontages. Yeah,
- 25:50Speaker 1: Princess Diaries was early ots right, because that was also
- 25:54Speaker 1: very satisfying makeo Vermontage. So when we rewatched it, the
- 26:12Speaker 1: things that we were latching onto are we're trans, We're
- 26:16Speaker 1: trans you know what I mean? This is you know there.
- 26:19Speaker 1: I think there are a few readings of this film,
- 26:23Speaker 1: Like there is like the very literal reading of what
- 26:26Speaker 1: it is. There's also a very drag reading of this film.
- 26:31Speaker 1: And there's also a ter reading. There's a turf reading
- 26:34Speaker 1: of this film. And I do think there's a trans
- 26:36Speaker 1: reading of this film because because um, you know, there
- 26:42Speaker 1: is there is a way you could look at this
- 26:44Speaker 1: film and say, like this person is um, you know,
- 26:49Speaker 1: experiencing gender euphoria by inhabiting this you know, female presentation
- 26:56Speaker 1: that at the end of the movie, Like, I think
- 26:59Speaker 1: the interesting thing about this movie is that it doesn't
- 27:01Speaker 1: end with Missus Doubtfire being cast off. She still exists
- 27:06Speaker 1: through the end of the film, and like it almost
- 27:09Speaker 1: is like, you know, Daniel has emerged with Missus Doubtfire.
- 27:14Speaker 1: And I do think like in a sequel film is
- 27:18Speaker 1: maybe like he is, she is living full time as
- 27:22Speaker 1: a Jenia Doubtfire. Oh yes, oh yes, I mean she's
- 27:26Speaker 1: if she's a star as if a Jenia, then she's
- 27:28Speaker 1: a star. Okay, let's keep it there. Um, Like I think,
- 27:32Speaker 1: I think, I think, Um, Missus Doubtfire is like the
- 27:35Speaker 1: pro to like trans show girl, like starts off doing
- 27:39Speaker 1: drag and then and then transitions. Yeah, and had to
- 27:43Speaker 1: do it in secret, right, Like when she was doing drag,
- 27:46Speaker 1: no one knew she was doing drag and drag and
- 27:48Speaker 1: and a lot of you know drag drag art firms
- 27:51Speaker 1: at the time. It's like you had to be incognito,
- 27:53Speaker 1: you had to cause play as a woman, like you
- 27:56Speaker 1: had to be a quote unquote cross dresser. And let's say,
- 27:59Speaker 1: the order to be viable by culture and let's say
- 28:01Speaker 1: this Missus Doubtfire, unclockable, unclockable. Not a single person clock
- 28:09Speaker 1: Turte never, never, single person in this clock Turte. If
- 28:14Speaker 1: only I could, if only I could be as unclockable,
- 28:18Speaker 1: if only I could pass as hard as Missus Doubtfire
- 28:22Speaker 1: Halloween costume. This year, maybe I will be Missus dolfire, considering,
- 28:28Speaker 1: considering that you're like previous best Halloween costume is also
- 28:32Speaker 1: that of an old woman old rose? Is that the
- 28:36Speaker 1: secret to being is that the secret to passing like
- 28:40Speaker 1: to be elderly? Elderly? Yeah, it's because like there is
- 28:45Speaker 1: something about age that's like a little it's like so
- 28:49Speaker 1: gendered while also being like a little post gender. That
- 28:54Speaker 1: maybe is the sweet spot of unclockability. Yeah, I mean yeah.
- 28:59Speaker 1: Look when Alexis Stone puts on that Missus Doubtfire drive
- 29:02Speaker 1: for the fucking Valenciaga show Unclockable, no one would ever
- 29:07Speaker 1: look twice at her. Okay, um yeah, I oh god,
- 29:12Speaker 1: I she is. I really do. I would never want
- 29:16Speaker 1: a reboot of this movie, but I would no, no, no,
- 29:19Speaker 1: no never, no. I don't want them to touch it.
- 29:20Speaker 1: It would be so bad it would make woke. Yes,
- 29:24Speaker 1: they would try to make a chance they would try
- 29:26Speaker 1: to make a woke And also this just this movie
- 29:27Speaker 1: can't really exist without Robin Williams. It's just there's no
- 29:31Speaker 1: one that can do a version of it. There's no
- 29:33Speaker 1: one who can take what Robin did and do something
- 29:35Speaker 1: different like it just it can't be done. But like
- 29:38Speaker 1: I do, I do think the fashion is great, and
- 29:42Speaker 1: that's something that's like kind of funny about Alexis Stone
- 29:44Speaker 1: as Missus Doubtfire. Now it's like the old lady like
- 29:47Speaker 1: floral print thing is in like Granny is in. Yes,
- 29:51Speaker 1: let's be clear, Missus Doubtfire was serving kunt. She's serving
- 29:56Speaker 1: you cut she's giving cunt to cut um. Is this
- 30:00Speaker 1: your favorite Robin Williams performance? No, just because Aladdin was
- 30:07Speaker 1: a very formative object in like my childhood between me
- 30:11Speaker 1: and my mom when I was like like five six,
- 30:14Speaker 1: like my earliest one of my earliest cultural memories is
- 30:16Speaker 1: watching Aladdin. And I love that you latched onto the
- 30:21Speaker 1: first scene when he's doing all these voices, because all
- 30:25Speaker 1: the voices that Robin Williams does in that scene are
- 30:29Speaker 1: one probably a lot of them are improvised. But two, actually,
- 30:32Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure I remember watching something about Robin Williams
- 30:36Speaker 1: and learning that many of those voices are actually improvised.
- 30:40Speaker 1: But in Aladdin as well, a lot of those lines
- 30:42Speaker 1: are improvised, and they like did the animation around it.
- 30:46Speaker 1: And I just think that what Robin does as a
- 30:48Speaker 1: voice actor specifically, which is again showcased, if not kind
- 30:52Speaker 1: of um, it's like a kind of cipher for Robin
- 30:56Speaker 1: Williams as a character in a little bit in a
- 30:58Speaker 1: few ways as a very talented voice actor that like,
- 31:02Speaker 1: his ability to vacillate between so many different personalities is
- 31:06Speaker 1: like fucking cool, Like it's and when you watch him
- 31:10Speaker 1: do it on the mic, you're like, how is he
- 31:13Speaker 1: doing that? And I think that that was encapsulated in Aladdin?
- 31:17Speaker 1: What about you? Is that I'm assuming this is your face?
- 31:19Speaker 1: It is missus Daalfhier, although I will say I'll Thoria
- 31:22Speaker 1: Curveball and say that a close second for me is
- 31:25Speaker 1: one of his rare dramatic roles. Have you ever seen
- 31:29Speaker 1: What Dreams May Come? No? What is that? Okay? What
- 31:33Speaker 1: Dreams May Come is this movie that was on HBO
- 31:36Speaker 1: like all the time when I was a kid, or
- 31:38Speaker 1: like maybe Showtime or Cinemax, And it's a film in
- 31:42Speaker 1: which Robin Williams dies and goes to Heaven and his
- 31:45Speaker 1: like Guardian angel Is I think played by Cuba Gooding Jr.
- 31:50Speaker 1: But then his wife, who's still alive, kills herself and
- 31:55Speaker 1: goes to Hell, and so he leaves Heaven and goes
- 31:58Speaker 1: to Hell to say of her. And it's it's a
- 32:01Speaker 1: very like, really visually stunning movie. And it wasn't probably
- 32:05Speaker 1: a flop, but I really appreciate it. You know, I've
- 32:09Speaker 1: never seen Dead Poets Society. Oh, you wouldn't like it
- 32:13Speaker 1: that much, but I don't. It's like a it's like
- 32:16Speaker 1: a slow It's just it's a slow, sad movie about
- 32:21Speaker 1: like masculinity and pedagogy and like mentorship. Oh pass, Yeah,
- 32:26Speaker 1: gorgeously written, like really, earnest Um doesn't really it's a
- 32:31Speaker 1: it's a doesn't really have a lot of laughs. A
- 32:32Speaker 1: lot it doesn't have. It doesn't have the Robin Williams
- 32:36Speaker 1: kind of characterizations. It has the Robin Williams who had depth,
- 32:40Speaker 1: the Robin Williams who you know was sitting with so
- 32:44Speaker 1: much darkness that we never really knew about as well. Yeah,
- 32:48Speaker 1: I did. Used to watch Mork and Mindy a lot
- 32:50Speaker 1: when it was on that's the gay one. It's well,
- 32:55Speaker 1: I mean kind of he's an alien, so like, oh right,
- 32:58Speaker 1: you know, maybe he's kind of gay. Adams has played
- 33:00Speaker 1: gay before, and something were going, do you think Robin
- 33:02Speaker 1: Williams is hot? Because I do. I think he's so sexy.
- 33:08Speaker 1: The only time I thought that Robin was hot was
- 33:12Speaker 1: when I was seeing some of a lot of these
- 33:16Speaker 1: kind of whenever we see like occasional tributes to Robin
- 33:18Speaker 1: Williams or like no one did it like Robin Williams,
- 33:21Speaker 1: Like I love this air where everyone's like yeah, like
- 33:23Speaker 1: Robin Williams was out here wearing like JPG and like yes,
- 33:28Speaker 1: like great fashion, like gender bending like on on these
- 33:31Speaker 1: kind of step and repeats and red carpet moments looking
- 33:34Speaker 1: fine like but also having a point of view in
- 33:37Speaker 1: men's style that no one else had. He was very daddy.
- 33:41Speaker 1: He was he was uncle. He was so uncle. He
- 33:46Speaker 1: oh wait, that is so on the nose rose like.
- 33:49Speaker 1: He was not giving daddy, he was giving uncle. He
- 33:52Speaker 1: was so uncle for that. He was Unkey's uncle Ronnie's
- 33:55Speaker 1: New Horror. He's the uncle in Uncle Ronnie's New hor
- 33:58Speaker 1: Real real virgin will get that reference. Um. He like
- 34:04Speaker 1: he's so he's so hairy and like he's a little
- 34:06Speaker 1: short and like the glasses. Um, I think he's kind
- 34:10Speaker 1: of sexy in Jumanji. Jumanji is another great Robin Williams movie. Same, yeah,
- 34:16Speaker 1: I loved Jumanji growing up. Do you think Missus Doubtfire
- 34:19Speaker 1: is a dike? Yeah, absolutely, like the honey she plays
- 34:25Speaker 1: soccer like she is a soccer diema. Okay. Oh Phoebe
- 34:30Speaker 1: also said he was kind of gay and flubber, which
- 34:32Speaker 1: is totally true. Another movie. I was allowed to watch
- 34:35Speaker 1: almost any Robin Williams movie growing up, and I did
- 34:38Speaker 1: watch that movie. Um yeah, wait, you know what part
- 34:41Speaker 1: I love and Missus Doubtfire is when Missus Doubtfire is
- 34:45Speaker 1: like kind of getting drunk and the guy starts hitting
- 34:47Speaker 1: on her and her her leg hair is showing, and
- 34:52Speaker 1: the guy's like like, fine with me, Fine with me,
- 34:56Speaker 1: I'm into it. Hey, I like that you're like that,
- 34:58Speaker 1: And I think I think Missus Delfire was like, I
- 35:01Speaker 1: think it's very much like um person who transitions and
- 35:05Speaker 1: like has historically been straight or like only into women,
- 35:09Speaker 1: and then you know, through experimenting with gender they start
- 35:13Speaker 1: to find that there, you know, sexuality is a bit
- 35:15Speaker 1: more fluid. Yeah exactly. I mean that wasn't the conversation,
- 35:20Speaker 1: but like that's the conversation we're having right now. Um,
- 35:25Speaker 1: I'm dread obviously, Like so I feel like rose between
- 35:29Speaker 1: you and I and the history of this podcast, the
- 35:32Speaker 1: moment where we were like, oh, this is the funniest
- 35:35Speaker 1: movie on the planet is obviously when Missus Delfire plunges
- 35:40Speaker 1: her face into a cream pie. I do think it
- 35:44Speaker 1: was coconut cream pie key lime, Yeah, coconut key lime.
- 35:47Speaker 1: A moment it was it was it was actually a
- 35:49Speaker 1: Sunday riley or lemon merangue pie. Maybe it's probably lemon
- 35:53Speaker 1: merangue yeah, um yeah, yeah exactly. And I don't know what,
- 35:57Speaker 1: but something happened between you and I, Rose, something happened
- 36:01Speaker 1: that like singed us together like that. That's when that's
- 36:04Speaker 1: when she says hello, can we do another? One? One, two, three? Hello?
- 36:15Speaker 1: And and it was just like it was, Um, nothing
- 36:19Speaker 1: has ever been funnier, nothing in the film has ever
- 36:21Speaker 1: been funnier than Missus Doltfire saying hello, Yes, it's ineffable,
- 36:25Speaker 1: it's in effigenia, it's it is it is like really
- 36:29Speaker 1: like it was just fucking it was just funny, and
- 36:34Speaker 1: and I think that, honestly, part of the reason that
- 36:36Speaker 1: Rose and I are being like a little trolley is
- 36:39Speaker 1: because there is something absurdly funny about like a man
- 36:43Speaker 1: dressing up as a woman and like being the hero
- 36:46Speaker 1: of the story by way of like tricking, tricking, if
- 36:51Speaker 1: not like usurping non consensually, his like friends family loved
- 36:55Speaker 1: ones um in a way that like turfs, hey, you know,
- 36:59Speaker 1: in the way that turfs like demonize and in ways
- 37:02Speaker 1: that in this part of culture were monocultural. It's also
- 37:06Speaker 1: very like Shakespearean almost, It's like a little like Moliere,
- 37:12Speaker 1: like French farce. Oh yeah, a comedy of errors, you know,
- 37:18Speaker 1: like yeah, yeah, yeah, and the drag of it all,
- 37:21Speaker 1: the scene at the restaurant where he has to keep
- 37:25Speaker 1: where she has to keep, she has to keep, you know,
- 37:29Speaker 1: getting in and out of her guiche the whole time,
- 37:33Speaker 1: the whole time. You know. Obviously, like a lot of
- 37:49Speaker 1: what we're saying about missed out hard being a trans
- 37:51Speaker 1: movie or like a little tongue in cheek, But there
- 37:54Speaker 1: are so many parts of it that I look back
- 37:57Speaker 1: at now and resonate with me so strongly, Like the
- 38:01Speaker 1: scene with irony with no irony, like the scene where
- 38:05Speaker 1: um missus Doubtfire's son clocks her tea when she sees
- 38:09Speaker 1: her standing up and peeing. Yes, like that is trans
- 38:15Speaker 1: experience trans not honestly, nothing is like more gender affirming
- 38:20Speaker 1: and more gender destroying than like lifting like the lifting
- 38:25Speaker 1: my skirt up at a urinal to piss, which obviously
- 38:29Speaker 1: like I have not done in a very long time.
- 38:31Speaker 1: It's like real, It's like I think the last time
- 38:33Speaker 1: I did it was like at the Glad Awards in
- 38:35Speaker 1: twenty nineteen. I think I saw that photo. Um, I yeah,
- 38:42Speaker 1: I I you know, to be transparent, ip sitting down,
- 38:45Speaker 1: but I but I do. But it is trans It
- 38:47Speaker 1: is like there's there is a thing where it's just
- 38:50Speaker 1: like that is a thing, that's a that's that's a thing,
- 38:53Speaker 1: and we immediately latch onto it. Um yeah, I think
- 38:58Speaker 1: that that kind of namable, that unnamable trans quality is
- 39:03Speaker 1: just I definitely saw it as a kid and also
- 39:06Speaker 1: understand it also much like Missus Delfire, I do put
- 39:09Speaker 1: on a full set of prosthetics every day before I
- 39:12Speaker 1: go outside, and that's you know, that's what makes it
- 39:17Speaker 1: even harder when I do get miss gendered because it's like,
- 39:21Speaker 1: what the fuck did I fucking glue all the ship
- 39:24Speaker 1: to my face for? Yeah? Um the double DS and
- 39:27Speaker 1: a top and bottom of Veneers that I have on
- 39:29Speaker 1: right now? You are still calogging me, how dare Missus
- 39:32Speaker 1: Doubtfire was giving? Body? Do you? Okay? Okay? If we're
- 39:38Speaker 1: looking at Missus Doubtfire Okay. We talked a little bit
- 39:41Speaker 1: about like from a trans perspective, but I think a
- 39:43Speaker 1: lot of drag queens love Missus Doubtfire as a drag figure,
- 39:49Speaker 1: and like there's certainly so much there in the in
- 39:53Speaker 1: the movie to support that reading or like that legacy
- 39:57Speaker 1: that she has. M your actu actually pointing out something
- 40:01Speaker 1: that I think is, dare I say, missing from this movie,
- 40:04Speaker 1: which is Missus Doubtfire musical number right? That could? That
- 40:09Speaker 1: could and should have happened. And I think that we
- 40:12Speaker 1: were even though we did get a little bit of
- 40:14Speaker 1: like Robin Williams singing, we really needed Missus Doubtfire original song.
- 40:20Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Wait, you know what I
- 40:22Speaker 1: didn't even think about when we were talking about how
- 40:25Speaker 1: hot Robin Williams is. The hottest he was was in
- 40:29Speaker 1: the Birdcage when he was gay. That's when he was
- 40:32Speaker 1: the gayest. We forgot that he actually did play gay
- 40:36Speaker 1: opposite Nathan Lane, and he was so he was like
- 40:39Speaker 1: giving like Versacci, like like chest hair, gold chain, like
- 40:46Speaker 1: sleazy Miami vibes. It was Versacci. Yeah, And I so
- 40:51Speaker 1: I've only seen that movie once, but like that movie,
- 40:54Speaker 1: like really like the gayness of it all, Like Robin
- 41:00Speaker 1: Williams ken I was gonna say, can say baggett Um,
- 41:04Speaker 1: I'm not gonna say that, though I'm gonna say Robin Williams,
- 41:06Speaker 1: I'll say he can say baggett we can say too. No.
- 41:12Speaker 1: He was so he was so effortless in a gay role.
- 41:16Speaker 1: He had no qualms and had no was unfazed by
- 41:20Speaker 1: the task of being gay. But I've only seen that
- 41:23Speaker 1: movie once, and I just remember the plot of the
- 41:25Speaker 1: movie is like insane, right, like what's the it is movie?
- 41:27Speaker 1: The plot of the movie is that, um, they're this
- 41:30Speaker 1: gay couple who own um a nightclub in Miami. Their
- 41:34Speaker 1: son is getting married, but um, his bride to be
- 41:38Speaker 1: his parents don't know that his dads are gay. I
- 41:42Speaker 1: mean it's based off Lakaja Foe. And so when the
- 41:45Speaker 1: parents come to visit Nathan Lane, um dresses in drag
- 41:51Speaker 1: to you know, play, so to pretend that they are
- 41:56Speaker 1: a hetero couple. So it's like Christine Bransky. Yes, so
- 42:00Speaker 1: it's another So I would actually say that I think
- 42:05Speaker 1: maybe the Bird Cage and Missus Doubtfire exists in the
- 42:09Speaker 1: same cinematic universe. So Nathan Lane and Robin Williams like
- 42:12Speaker 1: broke up. Robin Williams married Sally Field and then the
- 42:16Speaker 1: plot of Missus Dolfire happened, and he was like, wait, wait, wait,
- 42:19Speaker 1: this worked once before it could work again. I thought
- 42:24Speaker 1: you were gonna say that, like after Nathan you know,
- 42:28Speaker 1: had this like stint. After Nathan Lane had this stint
- 42:30Speaker 1: as as dressing up as a woman, he realized she
- 42:33Speaker 1: realized transitioned Field. Yes, no, no, no, no, no, I
- 42:37Speaker 1: was gonna say she transitioned to whatever, you know, her
- 42:40Speaker 1: new name was. I don't know what herr her like
- 42:42Speaker 1: kind of drag name was in um the bird Cage,
- 42:46Speaker 1: but I was gonna say she transitioned. And then later
- 42:48Speaker 1: in Robin Williams's wife later after Sally Field happened, she
- 42:52Speaker 1: transitioned as well. And now Missus Doubtfire and Nathan Lane
- 42:55Speaker 1: as a woman are a T for T couple. Couple.
- 42:58Speaker 1: That's where I thought you were going. Um, I would
- 43:01Speaker 1: support that. I think, thank you, that works well. Um.
- 43:04Speaker 1: Something else that's amazing about um the Birdcage was Christine
- 43:09Speaker 1: Baranski playing a homophobe. They're like, need to be more
- 43:12Speaker 1: movies and TV shows where Broadway divas play homophobes, like
- 43:17Speaker 1: Patty Lapone has done in HS Yes and I Pose
- 43:22Speaker 1: and in Ugly Betty Yes typecasting yes, typecasting much. Yeah.
- 43:29Speaker 1: I mean Laon is a little bit of a homophobe
- 43:31Speaker 1: with like the amount of gaze screaming at her all day,
- 43:35Speaker 1: every day, her entire life. In the words of Madonna,
- 43:38Speaker 1: she would kill fags who hate women period. Like yeah,
- 43:41Speaker 1: I think that, Like, um, yeah, Patty, any sort of
- 43:45Speaker 1: diva that wants to play homophobe can because she's earned
- 43:48Speaker 1: that right as a lauded diva. So I never saw
- 43:51Speaker 1: the Missus Doubtfire musical that was either just on the
- 43:55Speaker 1: West End or was maybe also on Broadway. We need
- 44:00Speaker 1: to see it and no, I oh oh, so I'm
- 44:05Speaker 1: I'm There's a couple of fun facts here on the
- 44:08Speaker 1: Missus Doutfire Wikipedia page. A young Blake Lively was almost
- 44:12Speaker 1: one of the children. So what okayo you know? Um,
- 44:17Speaker 1: Warren Beady m was almost Missus Doubtfire um, and also
- 44:22Speaker 1: Tim Allen was almost Missus Doubtfire but turned down both
- 44:26Speaker 1: the roles, probably because he is as as he's a
- 44:29Speaker 1: horrible person and I think he's like a conservative like
- 44:32Speaker 1: Trump supporter. Now, yeah, he's He's a huge, huge Fox
- 44:36Speaker 1: newser He was the one of the first celebrities to
- 44:39Speaker 1: say that coming out as a Republican is like harder
- 44:42Speaker 1: than like coming out as gay or whatever. Coming out
- 44:45Speaker 1: as a Republican in Hollywood means that like no one
- 44:47Speaker 1: will ever work with you again, and that's like why
- 44:48Speaker 1: we don't see Tim Allen projects anymore, which like I'm
- 44:51Speaker 1: grateful for, but Tim Allen unfortunately did raise me like
- 44:54Speaker 1: we were a home improvement family. I wonder if I'm
- 44:58Speaker 1: trying to think if there's anything in the culture now
- 45:01Speaker 1: rose that like exemplifies what I'm going to try and
- 45:06Speaker 1: talk about. But I do think that this era not
- 45:12Speaker 1: just the era of comedies where men dressed up as women,
- 45:14Speaker 1: but like era of comedies that are kind of body snatchy,
- 45:18Speaker 1: like hot Chick or white Chicks or I was gonna
- 45:21Speaker 1: say Freaky Friday, but like ones were like you like
- 45:24Speaker 1: a man is trapped in a woman's body, things like that.
- 45:27Speaker 1: Like I think people are afraid of those narratives now,
- 45:30Speaker 1: and yet they are really funny. I've actually I've I
- 45:35Speaker 1: haven't seen it since like middle school. Like White Chicks
- 45:38Speaker 1: is so good. Did you see that video that's been
- 45:39Speaker 1: going around on Twitter of the dance battle scene from
- 45:42Speaker 1: White Chicks and they're dancing to songs from the new
- 45:44Speaker 1: Caroline Policheck album White Chicks. We should have a guest
- 45:47Speaker 1: on to break down White Chicks for us, because like
- 45:49Speaker 1: that is a movie that I did watch like a
- 45:52Speaker 1: year a year, year and a half ago, and as
- 45:56Speaker 1: someone who you know doesn't need to like make critique
- 45:59Speaker 1: on this movie might as a passing as observation, I
- 46:01Speaker 1: was like this was ahead of its time in so
- 46:06Speaker 1: many ways, Like it was like a it was like
- 46:08Speaker 1: get out level like cultural commentary that I think went
- 46:14Speaker 1: under the radar because it was also extremely stupid. But
- 46:17Speaker 1: you know what, some of the stupidest movies have some
- 46:20Speaker 1: of the most incisive things to say about the world.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Euch like Missus Doubtfire sort of predicted the gender discourse
- 46:30Speaker 1: we would be having decades later. When Missus Doubtfire stood
- 46:34Speaker 1: to piss at that toilet, she pissed all over Stone
- 46:39Speaker 1: this heteronormativity, Um all over JK rolling space. Yeah exactly. Um,
- 46:47Speaker 1: did you are you gonna see? Are we going to
- 46:48Speaker 1: see Sally Field in eighty for Brady? No? Oh, we
- 46:53Speaker 1: already we We've talked about a sports movie. It's not
- 46:57Speaker 1: a sports movie. It is a sports movie. It's about
- 47:00Speaker 1: old ladies. I'm not about football. I'm not seeing it.
- 47:04Speaker 1: It's about football the way like Space Jam is about
- 47:07Speaker 1: like basketball. And I don't like Space Jam because of
- 47:09Speaker 1: that Space Jam is. I also don't think I'm not
- 47:12Speaker 1: a Space Jam girl. But I don't know. Um my vibe,
- 47:15Speaker 1: but I do. I do love Sally Field. Um, what
- 47:18Speaker 1: are what are some of your other favorite Sally Field performances?
- 47:23Speaker 1: I don't know. If I can only think of Missus
- 47:26Speaker 1: Doubtfire and eighty for Rady, my favorite performance is eighty
- 47:33Speaker 1: for Rady. I don't know. I don't know if I'm
- 47:35Speaker 1: seeing Sally Field in anything but Missus Doutfire, And like
- 47:40Speaker 1: I know, she has like a long history of incredible
- 47:44Speaker 1: filmwork and well, honestly, her oscars acceptance speech is her
- 47:47Speaker 1: greatest performance, like that, Oh yeah, you like me, you
- 47:50Speaker 1: really like me. I love Sally Field, but the fact
- 47:55Speaker 1: that her rebound from what Robin Williams was literally Pierce
- 47:59Speaker 1: Brasen in literally James Bond is just slightly unbelievable. Yeah,
- 48:06Speaker 1: I mean the comically attractive like new Boyfriend Trope is
- 48:11Speaker 1: like endlessly funny to me, and Pierce Brosnin is like
- 48:15Speaker 1: comically attractive in this movie. Isn't there a moment? Isn't
- 48:20Speaker 1: there a moment where okay, what there's a there's a
- 48:22Speaker 1: scene where Pierce Brosnin and Missus Doubtfire are interacting at
- 48:26Speaker 1: like what a beach club or like a pool like
- 48:29Speaker 1: a yeah, do you remember this? Like a country club? Yeah,
- 48:32Speaker 1: isn't doesn't mean like have the hots for her something
- 48:35Speaker 1: or no, he but he he comes up to the
- 48:38Speaker 1: bar to like talk to her and kind of you know,
- 48:40Speaker 1: he's trying to like get get get in with her
- 48:43Speaker 1: because he's you know, romancing Sally Field. M A lingering question.
- 48:48Speaker 1: Do you think that one of the children of Missus
- 48:51Speaker 1: Doubtfire grows up to be a serial killer because of
- 48:55Speaker 1: how a scarred they are from this experience? Not a
- 48:59Speaker 1: serial killer, but like they definitely like, you know, grew
- 49:03Speaker 1: up to write like a kind of wait, who is
- 49:06Speaker 1: that child actor that just wrote the memoir that everyone's reading. Oh,
- 49:11Speaker 1: I'm glad my mom died? Yeah, who was Jenette McCurdy? Yeah,
- 49:14Speaker 1: I see, I see one of these kids growing up
- 49:16Speaker 1: and writing like a Janette McCurdy s like I'm glad
- 49:19Speaker 1: my dad transitioned. Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. Yes, that is
- 49:23Speaker 1: the book that I add that I want to read.
- 49:25Speaker 1: And it's kind of like this is all my trauma
- 49:27Speaker 1: and yet it was all for the better. You know.
- 49:30Speaker 1: Um that I think is the story that I want
- 49:33Speaker 1: to read. So um, you know in the Realm of
- 49:36Speaker 1: Cross Dressing, you know, Harvey fire scene is in this
- 49:38Speaker 1: movie who would go on to originate the role of
- 49:42Speaker 1: Ed Turnblood on Broadway And Hairspray, um, which is another
- 49:47Speaker 1: like obviously iconic, you know, gender fuckery musical, much like
- 49:52Speaker 1: the film which starred Divine and as we've said on
- 49:55Speaker 1: this pod before, John Travolta's last significant performance, which is bizarre,
- 50:01Speaker 1: Well yeah, John, okay, so missus doubtfire walked. So John
- 50:06Speaker 1: Travolta in Hairspray could run that's not that's not at
- 50:10Speaker 1: all a joke, that is not absolutely to know I'm
- 50:14Speaker 1: being one hundred percent. And also I will say John
- 50:19Speaker 1: Travolta was also uncompable as editor and bloods. I don't know,
- 50:23Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't know about that. But and
- 50:26Speaker 1: that's movie magic. Well, slide intoward d MS at Like
