Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / ITB Contract Series: Who's Contract Situation Is More Under The Microscope – Hurts or Barkley?
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's going on? Everybody? It
- 0:15Speaker 1: is Jeff Mosher, It's Adam Kaplan.
- 0:16Speaker 2: We're in June and we are going to start a
- 0:19Speaker 2: podcast series that we do every year, and I think
- 0:21Speaker 2: we make it better every year. And what we do
- 0:24Speaker 2: it's called our Annual Contract Series, right where we look
- 0:28Speaker 2: at contracts on the Eagles and help our viewers, our
- 0:32Speaker 2: listeners understand what those contracts really mean. We go inside
- 0:36Speaker 2: the language and explain what that means about that player's future.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Because it's Adam.
- 0:41Speaker 2: You know in the NFL, how your contract is structured
- 0:45Speaker 2: and the guaranteed money is king in the NFL. When
- 0:48Speaker 2: you have a lot of it, your job is usually
- 0:51Speaker 2: pretty secure. It when you don't have a lot of
- 0:55Speaker 2: it left, it's not necessarily so.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Yeah, because and this is why having a good agent
- 1:01Speaker 3: so important, because structure matters, right, Because I know some
- 1:06Speaker 3: agents are like, Okay, I want a ton of full
- 1:09Speaker 3: guaranteed money. I don't care what the apy is. It
- 1:11Speaker 3: means average per season. Where some agents go, look, if
- 1:14Speaker 3: they're guaranteeing my guy this kind of money, they're not
- 1:17Speaker 3: going to cut him after two years, right, So I
- 1:20Speaker 3: don't need to get this in year three. I want
- 1:23Speaker 3: super high salary in the first two years, like and
- 1:27Speaker 3: then sometimes you're a prisoner to the structure. The packers
- 1:32Speaker 3: do a structure which they will not change. Andrew Brand
- 1:35Speaker 3: started it. By the way, ironically, it's massive side and bonus,
- 1:41Speaker 3: huge salary. You're one and that's it. That's all your
- 1:43Speaker 3: guaranteed money. But you're getting so much in year one.
- 1:48Speaker 3: If you suck in your two, they're probably not going
- 1:49Speaker 3: to cut you your three. If you suck, you're gonna
- 1:52Speaker 3: get cut. Yeah, that's the way it is. But so
- 1:54Speaker 3: it structure matters, yep. And we'll get to Barclay's contract.
- 1:59Speaker 3: I mean, they went crazy with the extension, but it's
- 2:02Speaker 3: not like they guaranteed the money through twenty thirty, like
- 2:04Speaker 3: because he's a running back. They only did it for
- 2:06Speaker 3: a certain year and this is the last year fully
- 2:09Speaker 3: guaranteed money of sitting right, right.
- 2:11Speaker 2: So in the past when we've done this kind of
- 2:13Speaker 2: like we used to do I mean early on, we
- 2:16Speaker 2: would do it in all one episode.
- 2:17Speaker 1: It'd be an hour and a half, and then we
- 2:19Speaker 1: decided it'd.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Be better do offense and defense, and then we would
- 2:22Speaker 2: split him that and then each one would be you know,
- 2:24Speaker 2: forty five minutes to fifty. But then even still you're
- 2:28Speaker 2: not We weren't able to go inside each position as much.
- 2:31Speaker 2: So what we decided this year we're going to do
- 2:33Speaker 2: is break it down to position groups, two groups for pod,
- 2:36Speaker 2: make it a series, and that will enable us to
- 2:38Speaker 2: really get each and every guy whose contract is worth
- 2:42Speaker 2: We're not going to do all ninety guys, you know,
- 2:44Speaker 2: ninety on the roster, but we will get through the
- 2:48Speaker 2: really important contracts that means something. So we'll start off
- 2:52Speaker 2: here in the first of this series with the most
- 2:56Speaker 2: important position, quarterback, and we'll go quarterback.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And running back in this podcast. So let's start quarterback.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Adam and we have had a lot of discussions about
- 3:06Speaker 2: Jill Hurts this off season, not just contract related.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I know there's been others putting it out.
- 3:13Speaker 2: There in the atmosphere that you know, oh, hey, look,
- 3:15Speaker 2: the Eagles haven't done anything with his contract, so that
- 3:18Speaker 2: must mean something.
- 3:20Speaker 1: But we'll talk about that.
- 3:22Speaker 2: But really we've talked about the acclimation to the offense,
- 3:25Speaker 2: and this all ties in. I mean, he's acclimating to
- 3:28Speaker 2: a new offense. He no longer has Aj Brown his
- 3:30Speaker 2: preferred target, and he is entering a year where the
- 3:34Speaker 2: money in the guaranteed money starts to get a lot
- 3:37Speaker 2: less than it was a year or two ago.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Yep, he is signed through twenty twenty eight. All the
- 3:43Speaker 3: money the season is full of guaranteed, all the cash
- 3:45Speaker 3: fifty one point five million. Now this is where it
- 3:46Speaker 3: gets interesting. After this season, he's got twenty three million
- 3:51Speaker 3: full of guaranteed in twenty seven of the fifty one
- 3:53Speaker 3: point five million, and then there's no guaranteed money in
- 3:57Speaker 3: twenty eight. So if I'm Hurts and Nicole in his agent,
- 4:01Speaker 3: if he kicks asked the season into the scheme being
- 4:04Speaker 3: seeing where the quarterback money's going, I'm gonna want a
- 4:06Speaker 3: new deal. That's if he again, he's got to prove
- 4:10Speaker 3: it though he's been on this downward slide. But you
- 4:13Speaker 3: the quarterback position. We don't talk about this enough. The
- 4:16Speaker 3: Kurt Warner situation where he went from being looked like
- 4:20Speaker 3: he was punched, drunk with the giants, like he was toast.
- 4:23Speaker 3: He was done, like this is it. He's gonna He's
- 4:25Speaker 3: going to Journeymansville, the worst kind of Journeymansville. That's where
- 4:27Speaker 3: Carson wentz is Yep. Then he somehow miraculously puts the
- 4:35Speaker 3: Cardinals on his back. He lifts the team up to
- 4:37Speaker 3: the Super bowlkins the Steelers, like he was unbelievable. The
- 4:40Speaker 3: quarterback position, you could always reinvent yourself. Rich Gannon did it,
- 4:43Speaker 3: by the way, okay with the Raiders with John Grueney
- 4:47Speaker 3: found the scheme and the timing late in his career
- 4:49Speaker 3: was phenomenal MVP. And he was actually an MVP with
- 4:51Speaker 3: the Raiders, so you could all and Jalen's not even
- 4:54Speaker 3: thirty yet he's well, he's he's much younger than it.
- 4:57Speaker 3: So we'll see what happens. But contracts matter, and clubs
- 5:02Speaker 3: structure it. They unless you have unbelievable leverage, the clubs
- 5:08Speaker 3: will always have the structure by their side. It's more
- 5:12Speaker 3: team friendly. Hurts had it. Hurts had somewhat of a
- 5:16Speaker 3: team friendly contract. But the good thing is least he's
- 5:20Speaker 3: got some guaranteed money, where let's say he didn't have
- 5:22Speaker 3: any guaranteed money in twenty seven. Not that they would
- 5:24Speaker 3: cut him if he sucks the season, they trade him first.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Obviously he's too young. You got you gotta wait, right,
- 5:30Speaker 3: but the player would have no leverage, whereas it having
- 5:34Speaker 3: just under twenty three million. That's fully guaranteed in twenty three,
- 5:37Speaker 3: excuse me, in twenty seven. Makes a club think about it.
- 5:40Speaker 3: If he doesn't play.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Well, absolutely, And to your point, if Jalen Hurts has
- 5:45Speaker 2: a really good season, takes the new offense really well,
- 5:49Speaker 2: not only will he want a new contract, I would
- 5:52Speaker 2: think the Eagles would jump at the opportunity to give
- 5:56Speaker 2: him one, because by offseason there's gonna be a lot
- 6:02Speaker 2: of quarterbacks resetting the market. I mean, first of all,
- 6:04Speaker 2: Cale Williams will be up, Drake May will be up,
- 6:07Speaker 2: Bo Knicks will be up.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Jade and Daniels could be up.
- 6:10Speaker 2: And now I'm not saying all four of those are
- 6:12Speaker 2: gonna go have all pro seasons, but they all could
- 6:14Speaker 2: have really good seasons.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Certainly, Daniels could bounce back.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Knicks has already been to an AFC Championship, May has
- 6:20Speaker 2: been to a super Bowl, and I don't think those
- 6:22Speaker 2: teams got any worse, right, And Caleb Williams certainly showed
- 6:26Speaker 2: you last year he's gonna be their their QB and
- 6:28Speaker 2: and with that offensive scheme, right, and then there'll be
- 6:31Speaker 2: a couple of like you know, Stafford's deal was just redone.
- 6:35Speaker 2: I don't know where Goff is, but the reality is
- 6:39Speaker 2: you're gonna find guys on rookie deals resetting the market,
- 6:42Speaker 2: and then you're gonna find a couple of veterans who
- 6:44Speaker 2: may perform well and wind up getting raising the number two.
- 6:47Speaker 2: So I don't think the Eagles have any issue getting
- 6:50Speaker 2: ahead of that if they can, if Jillen Hurts is
- 6:52Speaker 2: a good year and giving him a contract extension.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Five years, but it'll be like be redoing it.
- 6:59Speaker 3: They're gonna have. Eagles have to take it. Like speak
- 7:01Speaker 3: of what you're talking about. Eagles are gonna have to
- 7:02Speaker 3: take care of Dvante's miss contract. They have to do it.
- 7:05Speaker 3: It's so it was light when they did it. And
- 7:09Speaker 3: now the group is I mean, guys who are not
- 7:11Speaker 3: even remotely close to as good as Davante. You're getting
- 7:14Speaker 3: big time deals. Drake Lonnon is a good player, but
- 7:17Speaker 3: he's not Davante Smith. Yeah, we're not Eagles. Homer's folks
- 7:21Speaker 3: know this. We in fact, we get caught. We we
- 7:23Speaker 3: get people saying we're too negative against Eagles. We're not
- 7:26Speaker 3: tell the truth. But DeVante Smith me, look.
- 7:29Speaker 1: What the Colt guy got, the guy from the Colt's got.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Oh Alex Pierce, that one bothered. I again, Great John.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Wider in the NFL was clapping for that one.
- 7:38Speaker 3: He say, one trick, pony. He's just a night ro
- 7:40Speaker 3: out runner. Alex Pierre's twenty eight point five per year.
- 7:43Speaker 3: I mean, you're kidding me. Davante's way better than him.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 7:47Speaker 3: It's a great contract. I mean, and they had leveraged
- 7:49Speaker 3: he had, I know for a fact, he had money
- 7:51Speaker 3: line up elsewhere. Chris Ballard paddicked and overpaid him.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Yep. And I'm sure every GM in the NFL who
- 7:57Speaker 1: has a good wide receiver is not happy with that.
- 7:59Speaker 3: No. See, he's not well rounded. Is there a more
- 8:02Speaker 3: well rounded receive for the National Footb League than Devonte?
- 8:05Speaker 3: He does everything well.
- 8:07Speaker 1: It's hard to find. I mean, you know, like there's Pooka.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I'm trying to think there's just a very few who
- 8:11Speaker 2: do everything well. Jamar Chase obviously, by the way.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Pooka gets hurt a lot. He does, got his off
- 8:17Speaker 3: the field issue he's got to get through. But contracts matter,
- 8:22Speaker 3: and that's the point of doing this. So yeah, hurts,
- 8:24Speaker 3: you just hurt the hurt situation. Now the key. As
- 8:28Speaker 3: we turn our attention to Tanner mckeye. He's on the
- 8:30Speaker 3: last year of his rookie deal one point four to
- 8:31Speaker 3: five million. One point one four five million, excuse me.
- 8:35Speaker 3: In fact, Andy Dalton will make more money technically at
- 8:39Speaker 3: one point five million. What I find interesting is I
- 8:42Speaker 3: don't most people probably don't even realize this. So they
- 8:46Speaker 3: replaced Andy Dalton as their number two quarterback with Kenny Pickett.
- 8:50Speaker 3: The Panthers did yeah, and trust me when I say this,
- 8:55Speaker 3: they were more than willing to owe him guaranteed money.
- 8:58Speaker 3: They didn't want Dalton back his standing. They just they
- 9:01Speaker 3: wanted to move on. They thought he was at thirty eight.
- 9:03Speaker 3: You know, he's near the end. He's healthy, there's nothing
- 9:06Speaker 3: wrong with them. But the Eagles liked him. As we
- 9:10Speaker 3: said three years ago, they it was either going to
- 9:12Speaker 3: be Dalton here or to Carolina. Andy made a decision
- 9:17Speaker 3: to go to the Panthers, and the Panthers had a
- 9:21Speaker 3: guarantee of this season. His whole salary is guaranteed, and
- 9:26Speaker 3: the Panthers were more than willing to pay two and
- 9:28Speaker 3: a half million of it. They found so on to
- 9:31Speaker 3: take one point five of it. Eagles will pay that
- 9:33Speaker 3: and that's what he's going to make this season finally
- 9:35Speaker 3: of his deal. So they've always liked Andy Dalton and
- 9:40Speaker 3: he's here. They've got they've got depth of quarterback. It's
- 9:42Speaker 3: always good to have that. So they're basically investing point
- 9:48Speaker 3: two So they're basically investing in their backup quarterbacks. Two
- 9:52Speaker 3: point seven million not bad.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Yeah, which is not which is great.
- 9:56Speaker 2: I mean there used to be a time, you know,
- 9:58Speaker 2: where it costs a lot of money to have. Remember
- 10:00Speaker 2: they made Chase Daniel the highest paid quarterback backup quarterback
- 10:04Speaker 2: one year.
- 10:05Speaker 3: If you remember, crazy, Oh my god, I remember.
- 10:07Speaker 2: And then they had to bring back Nick Foles after
- 10:09Speaker 2: winning the Super Bowl on something ridiculous. Uh so, yeah,
- 10:13Speaker 2: this is what I mean. That's really what led to
- 10:15Speaker 2: the whole philosophy of getting like Jalen Hurt's second round pick,
- 10:18Speaker 2: a guy you phil can be your starter if he
- 10:21Speaker 2: needed to be at the time, and win games for
- 10:23Speaker 2: you as a backup, but while being cost controlled.
- 10:26Speaker 1: At the same point.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Ever since, the Eagles have done a really good job
- 10:29Speaker 2: of having cost controlled backups who can go in and
- 10:32Speaker 2: win games, whether it was Gardner Minshew for example. Now
- 10:36Speaker 2: I do think it's a little strange that the Panthers
- 10:39Speaker 2: are basically they're paying to get rid of Andy Dalton
- 10:43Speaker 2: so that they could replace him with Kenny Pickett. That
- 10:45Speaker 2: one's a little whacking to me, but you know, teams
- 10:48Speaker 2: do some strange things sometimes.
- 10:50Speaker 3: It's listen, they not every team. We know this. They
- 10:54Speaker 3: don't see players the same way. And they're paying what
- 10:57Speaker 3: this is hilarious. Guess what they paying Kenny Pickett the
- 11:00Speaker 3: season four million dollars exactly really exactly the same number
- 11:08Speaker 3: they would pay any Dalton this season.
- 11:10Speaker 1: That's coat.
- 11:11Speaker 3: And they see Kenny pick who's way younger, more athletic,
- 11:14Speaker 3: they seem as a better football player. They're telling you,
- 11:16Speaker 3: as we say they they they're telling what they think
- 11:18Speaker 3: of the Dalton right like any washed Eagles don't. And
- 11:23Speaker 3: Andy Dalton from one understanding is they're really going he
- 11:24Speaker 3: looks great, and you know we'll see admits. It's only OTAs,
- 11:28Speaker 3: which is what we've equated double a baseball. It's doesn't
- 11:31Speaker 3: really mean anything, but it's better look than not good.
- 11:33Speaker 3: So that's the quarterback position in the Eagles. If you
- 11:37Speaker 3: look at the position, Stafford signed for one year and
- 11:40Speaker 3: fifty five million m HM. So the Eagles aren't investing
- 11:45Speaker 3: a ton of money. It's not like they're over market.
- 11:47Speaker 3: And Cole Payton's going to make eight just under nine
- 11:49Speaker 3: hundred grand the season, which is not guaranteed by the way.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Right, and I should have mentioned at the top, we're
- 11:53Speaker 2: not really going to get into rookies and on the
- 11:55Speaker 2: Eagles in their contracts because they're all slotted. They don't
- 11:57Speaker 2: they don't mean anything right now because they're all in
- 12:00Speaker 2: first year of either four or potentially five year deals.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Just real last thing on the key though, you know,
- 12:08Speaker 2: I guess the the interesting thing will be if he
- 12:11Speaker 2: still you know, I still think that there's like a
- 12:13Speaker 2: small chance, you know, during camp you get traded if
- 12:16Speaker 2: somebody loses a quarterback, and because it's really the pecking
- 12:20Speaker 2: order doesn't make sense.
- 12:20Speaker 1: We've talked about this.
- 12:21Speaker 2: But you kind of wonder what contract he might be
- 12:25Speaker 2: in line for in the offseason depending on what happens
- 12:29Speaker 2: with him this season, if he is still with the Eagle,
- 12:31Speaker 2: I mean, if there's a chance he may not get
- 12:33Speaker 2: into any games, or just like a resting starters.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Weekend's you would have on on your point, you'd have
- 12:38Speaker 3: to go on last year's tap against Washington, which was
- 12:40Speaker 3: not very good. The Giants tape was very good. You'd
- 12:43Speaker 3: have to go through. His preseason tape is really good
- 12:45Speaker 3: except for the one game which was it his rookie
- 12:50Speaker 3: was that the Minnesota game?
- 12:52Speaker 1: Yeah, there was one game where he wasn't didn't shine.
- 12:54Speaker 3: I mean that was yeah, but very well liked around
- 12:57Speaker 3: the league. Now you have to weigh that versus Okay,
- 13:01Speaker 3: the early word on the twenty seven quarterback class is
- 13:04Speaker 3: good for the draft, but you got to get through
- 13:06Speaker 3: the season first. Always explain to people it all sounds great.
- 13:10Speaker 3: And Garrett Nessmeyer's the best example of this, very well
- 13:13Speaker 3: loved in scouting world. He had he had the back issue,
- 13:17Speaker 3: medical issue. He had to get through it, and he
- 13:19Speaker 3: he dropped. In fact, he barely got drafted the Chiefs
- 13:22Speaker 3: Drafte Brown.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:23Speaker 2: I mean, if if he can stay healthy, then maybe
- 13:28Speaker 2: the Chiefs got something there interesting as a back.
- 13:30Speaker 3: Oh yeah, big time.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Sure talent was there. Didn't they do that with their
- 13:34Speaker 1: the guard Tray Smith? Didn't they get him really late?
- 13:36Speaker 3: Also, injury six might have been medical. Yeah it is.
- 13:41Speaker 3: I mean you're talking about an elite player, Tray Smith.
- 13:44Speaker 3: It's around in twenty one. Yeah, I mean you got
- 13:48Speaker 3: to give Bread Veach and his group credit. Man, what
- 13:51Speaker 3: a player.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, all right, So let's go to the
- 13:54Speaker 1: running back. So Barkley.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Saquon Barkley's become pretty interesting because at the after his
- 14:01Speaker 2: great twenty twenty four season, when he broke the single
- 14:04Speaker 2: season and regular i'm sorry, the regular season end postseason
- 14:08Speaker 2: record for rushing, the Eagles did something technically have to do,
- 14:12Speaker 2: but a good business would do, and that would be
- 14:15Speaker 2: guaranteeing more money over later years of his deal.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Correct. Yeah, they wound up extending his deal for two
- 14:23Speaker 3: years and guaranteeing thirty six million, and the average per
- 14:26Speaker 3: year went first time in NFL history running back went
- 14:28Speaker 3: over twenty million. Twenty point six million. Like you said,
- 14:32Speaker 3: they didn't have to do it, they did right by him.
- 14:34Speaker 3: So now this is where cont like details matter. So
- 14:38Speaker 3: after this season, in twenty seven, of the sixteen million
- 14:43Speaker 3: in cash, it's they only guaranteed two point five million
- 14:48Speaker 3: that So what this tells me is if he does
- 14:52Speaker 3: not play well this season, it's hard to justify bringing
- 14:56Speaker 3: him back as great as he was now obviously had
- 14:57Speaker 3: the big drop off, but so it's it's something we
- 15:01Speaker 3: got to watch the season and having gret co Cel
- 15:04Speaker 3: who works for us, will tell us what the tape
- 15:06Speaker 3: looks like. But I find an interesting structurally the way
- 15:11Speaker 3: that they did this thing. It's pretty interesting.
- 15:14Speaker 1: So what exactly is his number this year? Is it all?
- 15:18Speaker 1: It's still over twenty million this year?
- 15:20Speaker 3: All right? This year? Let me see, um, sixteen point
- 15:26Speaker 3: seventy five million. Okay, Now what I don't have is
- 15:30Speaker 3: I don't know when his option bonus is vest but
- 15:36Speaker 3: the option bonus is carried in. Yeah, it's just under
- 15:41Speaker 3: seventeen million. What happens is to raise it up the
- 15:46Speaker 3: back at like in twenty eight it's nineteen point two million. Like,
- 15:50Speaker 3: there's certain there's certain little things put in here to
- 15:52Speaker 3: raise the number. Plus he's got incentives in it that
- 15:55Speaker 3: bring it up. Yeah. So yeah, there's certain things that
- 15:59Speaker 3: could bring He's got some really big time incentives in it.
- 16:02Speaker 3: They're bringing over twenty million each year.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Yeah, he's got to hit them.
- 16:05Speaker 2: So the question for the purposes of why we do
- 16:08Speaker 2: this podcast this specific one, is he guaranteed to be
- 16:14Speaker 2: on the roster in twenty twenty seven, no salary.
- 16:18Speaker 3: No, you could walk away from home two point five
- 16:19Speaker 3: million that's guaranteed of the total cash you could walk
- 16:22Speaker 3: away from that.
- 16:23Speaker 1: So that means this is a big year for sake.
- 16:24Speaker 3: Qual absolutely why And by the way.
- 16:27Speaker 2: He if he just has his career numbers, if he's
- 16:30Speaker 2: somewhere in like the twelve to fourteen hundred yards.
- 16:33Speaker 1: And a couple, he's fine.
- 16:34Speaker 2: I'm not We're not trying to say like he has
- 16:36Speaker 2: to go out there and go challenge Eric Dickerson again
- 16:39Speaker 2: for any rushing you know, record book stuff.
- 16:42Speaker 1: But he's got to be he's got to be really good.
- 16:44Speaker 1: I mean, he's got to be Saquon Barkley.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Listen. He's got incentives in each year where he could
- 16:48Speaker 3: bring it each year to literally I don't have a total,
- 16:52Speaker 3: I haven't totally yet, but well over twenty million. But
- 16:54Speaker 3: he's got to he's got to play great, right, you know.
- 16:57Speaker 3: But they they did right by him. I give them
- 17:02Speaker 3: credit and that. But there's an end aid to this thing,
- 17:05Speaker 3: and it's after the season.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, that'll be interesting.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Now, that doesn't mean if he has a great season
- 17:11Speaker 2: that they have to do anything.
- 17:12Speaker 1: I wouldn't contract.
- 17:14Speaker 2: No, they did it if he has another unless unless
- 17:17Speaker 2: he does something just so like twenty five hundred yards
- 17:20Speaker 2: like so amazing and which won't happen.
- 17:22Speaker 3: But look if he runs for seventeen hundred and everything's great, great,
- 17:25Speaker 3: then he's going to hit some incentives. Right, you can
- 17:28Speaker 3: have a great year you don't do anything. That's why
- 17:29Speaker 3: they're built in there to reward.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Him one awesome all right.
- 17:33Speaker 2: His backup tank Bigsby, one of his backups. He was
- 17:37Speaker 2: acquired in a trade from the Jaguars. So he's still
- 17:40Speaker 2: on his rookie deal if I'm not mistaken.
- 17:43Speaker 3: He is. So this is the founity of his rookie
- 17:45Speaker 3: deal and he's going to make just over one point
- 17:48Speaker 3: four million, which is not guaranteed. He is, he's a
- 17:51Speaker 3: clear backup. There's no competition for it. Yeah, and he's
- 17:54Speaker 3: the only thing is what is who sees third third down?
- 17:59Speaker 3: Marklee certainly see some shipley and that's pretty much now. Now,
- 18:04Speaker 3: could Elijah Mitchell he off injered to Elijah Mitchell challenge,
- 18:09Speaker 3: we'll see. I mean he's a he knows this offense.
- 18:12Speaker 3: He's a one cut runner. This is why he's here. Right.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Then this guy Damian Pierce who's signed a one year
- 18:18Speaker 3: deal worth one point three million. They did guarantee two
- 18:23Speaker 3: hundred and fifty thousand at signing of his one point
- 18:28Speaker 3: one five million salary, and then Digos are one of
- 18:31Speaker 3: the few teams that do this for these back end
- 18:33Speaker 3: of the roster players. Maybe it's cold. He agreed to it,
- 18:39Speaker 3: so he must care. They gave him a game one
- 18:43Speaker 3: roster bonus, so if he's on not only the fifty three,
- 18:46Speaker 3: he's got to be on. He can't be an active
- 18:47Speaker 3: Game one. If he makes the roster and is on
- 18:51Speaker 3: the game day roster, he gets an extra fifty grand.
- 18:55Speaker 3: Oh okay, that's worth it. I mean, if you're only
- 18:57Speaker 3: gonna make one point three million, yeah, you probably have
- 18:59Speaker 3: someone motivation, yeah you know, but yeah, yeah, so, and
- 19:04Speaker 3: the total would be just one point two and nine
- 19:06Speaker 3: million is exact cash number. Right.
- 19:08Speaker 1: So to get back to Bigsby, with him this being
- 19:10Speaker 1: the last year of his deal, with him being.
- 19:12Speaker 2: The top backup, with him being in an offense he's
- 19:16Speaker 2: played the Jaguars blocking scheme isn't very different than what
- 19:20Speaker 2: we expect Sean Manion to bring in. He's a good
- 19:22Speaker 2: one cut runner. It's hard to see him with the
- 19:25Speaker 2: Eagles pass this year. As long as he does his
- 19:27Speaker 2: job because he should get some attention on the free
- 19:29Speaker 2: agent market, and the Eagles aren't gonna want to pay
- 19:31Speaker 2: a lot of money for a backup. So unless he's
- 19:34Speaker 2: just okay and you can bring him back next year
- 19:36Speaker 2: on a one year deal, then he's probably headed somewhere.
- 19:39Speaker 1: This is probably you would think. The last year for Bigsby.
- 19:43Speaker 3: I mean Gamewell, it was between minor staying was then
- 19:45Speaker 3: it was between Gainwell for Gainwells the Eagles and the Steelers,
- 19:48Speaker 3: and Steelers game a little bit above the minimum mm hmmm.
- 19:52Speaker 3: Because he goes you have to Chipley. So they didn't.
- 19:54Speaker 3: They felt like, you know, how much, how could we
- 19:55Speaker 3: how much could we pay him? Now? They missed the
- 19:57Speaker 3: one third down pass protection and who they held know
- 20:00Speaker 3: he would lead the Steelers. He would lead the Steelers
- 20:01Speaker 3: in receptions. I mean, that's that shouldn't happen. That that
- 20:04Speaker 3: tells you how bad Arthur Smith was right that that's
- 20:08Speaker 3: ridiculous what you're paying DK Metcalf mm hmm. That's embarrassing.
- 20:12Speaker 3: So Pierce really does not fit the zone scheme.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 20:17Speaker 3: He's better, he's better in a gap scheme like he
- 20:19Speaker 3: would have been better more for Stalin because he was phenomenal.
- 20:23Speaker 3: Pierce was his rookie season, yep. And then they changed
- 20:26Speaker 3: the blocking scheme and Houston is my understanding at the time,
- 20:29Speaker 3: so he has not been the same since.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I know when they made that sign and you
- 20:32Speaker 2: and I said, I don't understand this from a schematic standpoint.
- 20:36Speaker 1: He's runner and up the gut guy. And yeah, a.
- 20:40Speaker 3: Friend of mine told me, he goes do it, you know,
- 20:41Speaker 3: he he's this is the type of runner he is.
- 20:44Speaker 3: I had the greatest tape for free agency for you know,
- 20:47Speaker 3: for a while, and he just he's bounced around and
- 20:49Speaker 3: but hey, Heagles like something from him.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:52Speaker 3: So, uh, Girad Johnson was with him in Houston.
- 20:56Speaker 1: M hmm.
- 20:57Speaker 3: I think about you know, over the years. So we'll
- 20:59Speaker 3: see what happens. Rad Johnson's an offensive assistant for the Eagles.
- 21:02Speaker 3: And then there's Carson Steele got a one year deal
- 21:05Speaker 3: with no guaranteed money at one point five million, currently
- 21:09Speaker 3: nursing something. That's it for the running backs.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Yep, Shipley has the most to gain.
- 21:14Speaker 2: I mean, obviously he's he's this will be year three
- 21:17Speaker 2: and yeah, for whatever reason, Bigsby's hurt or Shimpley plays
- 21:20Speaker 2: a bigger role and gets the catch.
- 21:23Speaker 1: The new offense helps him catch passes.
- 21:25Speaker 2: He can kind of like reveal himself as a good
- 21:27Speaker 2: versatile backup and maybe there's some potential there.
- 21:29Speaker 1: But he's he's under contract for this year and.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Next, so yes, he'll make one point seventy five million.
- 21:34Speaker 3: The guarantees all came in a signingponus might because he
- 21:39Speaker 3: plays specials. You know, he's got really good straight line speed.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Even if he doesn't have a good camp, it's more
- 21:45Speaker 3: likely than not he'd be on the roster. It's certainly
- 21:47Speaker 3: not a lock. He's got to be better. He didn't
- 21:49Speaker 3: have a great year.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Yeah, let's call it.
- 21:51Speaker 3: We love Will Andrew and I interviewed him for WBCB.
- 21:54Speaker 3: He was awesome, great dude, real foodie. But he's got reform.
- 22:01Speaker 3: You know, he's got.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Powerful So just yeah, to recap from a contract standpoint,
- 22:09Speaker 2: big year for Hurts with the guaranteed money.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Huge year. Okay, big year for.
- 22:15Speaker 2: The Key, but he can't control it the way Hurts does.
- 22:18Speaker 2: He actually has to be able to play play.
- 22:20Speaker 3: I mean he's.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Yeah, not necessarily a big year for Barkley because he's
- 22:24Speaker 2: not gonna do much better.
- 22:26Speaker 1: His contract is gonna be his contract.
- 22:28Speaker 2: But if he does a lot worse, if he gets hurt,
- 22:31Speaker 2: if he shows decline to play well, Yeah, he's.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Got to play well because again.
- 22:36Speaker 1: He has more, he has more to lose than gain.
- 22:38Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, that's how you frame it is exactly it.
- 22:42Speaker 3: He if he doesn't like last year was not good
- 22:46Speaker 3: and we can blame the offensive line, which is horrendous
- 22:48Speaker 3: around blocking really good in pass pro. It's kind of
- 22:50Speaker 3: odd we think of the other way around when guys
- 22:53Speaker 3: wear down. But anyway, we'll have to see and that's
- 22:56Speaker 3: that's that's gonna be fascinating, and we are gonna have
- 23:00Speaker 3: our eyes big time on that offensive line and how
- 23:02Speaker 3: they look physically in training camp. What did we miss
- 23:04Speaker 3: on that one? But so did everyone else? Sure, my god,
- 23:07Speaker 3: I how did how the hell see? The thing I
- 23:09Speaker 3: don't understand is right, they were leading twenty four. Yes,
- 23:12Speaker 3: they wore down, but to regress that quickly.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Yeah, it's the NFL for your brother, I.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Know, it's just haven't in the history of our show,
- 23:24Speaker 3: we had never really had to talk about them wearing.
