- 0:45Welcome back to being boundary Corner podcast.
- 0:49I am Curtis welcome. I Brian siglo buddy we back on a
- 0:53Wednesday night. It's been a while but here we
- 0:57are. Three weeks.
- 0:59It's the oldest. He's the man, we got things
- 1:03going on. You're traveling, we got forts
- 1:06going on with kiddos. You got cool wrapping up.
- 1:11Clearly you look at my face, I spent time at the pool this
- 1:14weekend. I got a little tan.
- 1:16You're going on. I'm not even not do that.
- 1:20I did get a couple bike rides in.
- 1:22So bite me when you did my car that if you also power washed
- 1:27Which is probably why I have a terrible time if they good on
- 1:32you man. You did more yard with metadata
- 1:37had to be done. I mean, you know, there's a few
- 1:39places you look around. It's like, okay, we got to do
- 1:42this. And it's if you commit to doing
- 1:45it's like six hours, right? See it like dinner time?
- 1:50But yeah, it has been three weeks guys.
- 1:52A lot of stuff going on and Hokie Nation.
- 1:55We're going to cover a variety of topics tonight but Brian
- 1:59let's kick it off. And let's talk with let's start
- 2:01with big news of the day and let's talk basketball with
- 2:07Justin mutts announcing he will be returning.
- 2:12Yeah, that's big news guys that really you know we had been
- 2:17hoping that we were going to get that word for our own sake.
- 2:20You know, obviously I know, Justin was exploring.
- 2:23Yes, potential draft prospects there, but I think he knows that
- 2:28we're glad to have him back and we're glad that he's running it
- 2:31back for another year with this hokey team.
- 2:34And when we look at this hokey team now with what, Mike young
- 2:38has been able to do in the offseason between the recruiting
- 2:41class and some of the transfer portal.
- 2:44Pickups this is a pretty, pretty strong, not only starting five,
- 2:50but probably the eight or nine main rotation that we're looking
- 2:53at for the 2223 season coming up.
- 2:55Oh, for sure. I mean, so let's let's let's
- 2:58just talk about it. When we were talking about it
- 3:00earlier today at starting five. Center power forward, you know
- 3:05the transfer Grant the seal yep we feel right.
- 3:11I think so. I think that's going to be the
- 3:14essentially a Luma 2.0 in some ways.
- 3:18I think you know there's a couple parts of the seals game
- 3:20that may be a little stronger than aluminum.
- 3:22A couple that might not quite be as polished.
- 3:24At least it we're we're a little was at this time last year but I
- 3:28think overall that was a good Plug and Play pick up in the
- 3:31portal. Obviously, getting months back,
- 3:35that's huge. Huge group, huge for leadership,
- 3:39huge group, home court, play the matchups.
- 3:42He creates what he can do, especially passing out of the
- 3:45pose to guys. Like, another really good leader
- 3:48Hunter Couture. Yeah, you got, you got Couture
- 3:52and then I'll obviously we got Maddox back there as well.
- 3:56Both of those winged guys. Both can shoot the three well if
- 4:01you see Maddux, develop a little With his defense and his handle,
- 4:05he's going to be a big-time offensive threat.
- 4:08Yes. So I'm looking forward to see
- 4:11what he can do with that. And then obviously, we got John
- 4:14Padula, running the point. Yes, and as much as we can all
- 4:19love. Shown love, storm, Murphy comes
- 4:22calling, Sean Murphy storm, Murphy.
- 4:26He was a good point guard, but that was the one element He was
- 4:29missing, was the be able to create and There was at times
- 4:33last year, you saw pedulla. Come on.
- 4:35And there were times he could create not every single
- 4:38possession. He doesn't have that skill level
- 4:40because if he had that skill level, he would probably already
- 4:42have played with your college and already being the pros.
- 4:45But to have him running the point where, you know,
- 4:48occasionally he can just go, right, you just go create his
- 4:53own shot. You know, I know there were
- 4:56there's there's a lot of concerns about is there anybody
- 4:59behind them? But I think between Maddox
- 5:02Couture him in Rodney rice was, but shout out the combo guard.
- 5:07Rodney rice one of the highest recruit ever signed, you know,
- 5:12top 65 player for Star, little handle with him to get, you
- 5:18know, I think we'll be okay at point guard.
- 5:21I think, obviously, It's like somebody said it today and I
- 5:27wish I could remember who it was.
- 5:29So if you said it in some of the chats where in and more you said
- 5:33it on Twitter not trying to steal them just like the point
- 5:37of it's just like the NBA usually, whoever your backup
- 5:42point guard. Is you're not doing the same
- 5:43things, you are with your start. Yeah, I think that's the big
- 5:48thing especially with Rowdy rice because that's going to give him
- 5:51some time to do what he does. Well right now out the gate.
- 5:57Yep. And as he develops, some of
- 5:59those, those finer skills that he's going to be going to need
- 6:02to take over that more full-fledged starting role
- 6:07sometime in the future for the Hokies.
- 6:09Whether that be on the floor, at the same time at the two guard
- 6:13or whether that be, you know, being a true combo and running
- 6:16the point. Point for a good portion of the
- 6:18game. I don't think it might kind of
- 6:20system that there is a great need for a capital P.
- 6:26Capital, G point guard sure, it's definitely not that type of
- 6:31system. So you having a guy like, like
- 6:35Rowdy rice is definitely kind of a very good fit for this type of
- 6:38system. Yep.
- 6:39And then, two guys, we mentioned that earlier, you know, in the
- 6:43year about the transfers with Poteet in Camden.
- 6:46I mean, obviously, Sleep OT. It's going to give you that
- 6:49again your Center Off the Bench who has played significant
- 6:52minutes. You had some good size and then
- 6:55cannons kind of the unknown and Kim and become that extra wing.
- 7:00And if he becomes that extra Wing, you feel like you got
- 7:03Couture Mattox, and him, then you've got Maddux could do Le
- 7:06and rice. And then the Poteet Basile mutts
- 7:10and hopefully Camden kind of coming that piece where you can
- 7:13maybe play a three wing. You know, you take months out to
- 7:16get A breather you play Basile Camden Couture Maddox.
- 7:21You play like a three wing type you know, offensive game.
- 7:26Yeah so it's I said this earlier and I'll say it again.
- 7:33I want to temper expectations early because I think what's got
- 7:38to happen is similar to last year.
- 7:40You've got to figure out where the new pieces fit obviously.
- 7:45When we figured out how they fit, what happened is, what
- 7:48happened? But before that, you know, what
- 7:54did you say? You think we're you feel like
- 7:57where we were last year is where you think we should start this
- 8:01year, right? I think the expectations we had
- 8:03pre season last year is where they need to start this year.
- 8:06I think this is a top-to-bottom, a deeper team than last year.
- 8:12I think it is going to take a little bit of time for it to
- 8:14jail. So I think the expectations at
- 8:18the start of last season, we're probably a little high.
- 8:20Higher than they should have been, considering what we had to
- 8:24do in the backcourt, in terms of kind of kind of figuring out
- 8:29those rotations. I think it's probably going to
- 8:33be a little bit of figuring out those rotations, especially in
- 8:37the frontcourt this year, as we replace two-thirds of that.
- 8:43And I think it's going to take some time to find those, but I
- 8:45like the versatility of the line of you can go bigger.
- 8:48You can go smaller and then you can go Wing heavy.
- 8:50So you get a little bit of everything, right?
- 8:54I like that, there is those matchups.
- 8:56We can really work, matchups, depending on The opponent's
- 9:00strengths and weaknesses. There's some, there's some teams
- 9:03and we're going to play We're Poteet.
- 9:05Might be the, the guy, the first guy to start might be.
- 9:07This might be the the center you want out there, but there's
- 9:11going to be, I'd say the majority of the games, the seal
- 9:13is going to get the majority of those minutes.
- 9:16I agree. But I get I like the versatility
- 9:19that this gives us because everybody off the bench has some
- 9:22degree of proven caliber play. And that's what we didn't have
- 9:26last year at the start of the Season proven caliber play.
- 9:29Way in niches niches teacher, big banger get rebounds.
- 9:34Play hard defense. If you know, you know, if you
- 9:39decide to have Couture, come off the bench can handle can hit
- 9:42threes. However.
- 9:44So, you know, when they come in, they give you something versus
- 9:48like you said. Last year, it was the unknown
- 9:49of. What are they going to give us
- 9:52one other piece. The basketball news that broke
- 9:55the saint confirmed. He's going to Kansas State.
- 9:58I don't know if this was Is a direct move in relation to
- 10:01months coming back. If months doesn't come back,
- 10:04does this? This on return?
- 10:06But best of luck to him going to a pretty solid program out in
- 10:10case state so that will wrap up the basketball segment.
- 10:14All right, we go from a high to we gotta, we gotta go to a
- 10:20little low here, you know, softball.
- 10:24You know, after the regional weekend, where they went three
- 10:27games in 24 hours, which was unbelievable.
- 10:31You know, being Kentucky, be Miami of Ohio late night into
- 10:36Sunday morning and then back to back against Kentucky.
- 10:40You know, the fuel was rocking. The place was rocking our hotel,
- 10:45girl had herself a weekend. And he did have a weekend,
- 10:49shout-out. Mackenzie Lauder and then the
- 10:52Florida Gators role in town. And essentially a, you know, top
- 10:56ten Team all year. They got ranked 12th in the
- 11:01couple to filing polls Friday night early, Saturday morning
- 11:05started off great, Hokies went six nothing but from there it
- 11:10didn't, you know, ends in heartbreak losing.
- 11:13Subsequently was a decent, start to gain to a couple missed
- 11:17opportunities, a couple things. Didn't quite go, the Hokies way,
- 11:19and then Florida capitalized and closed out the game too.
- 11:23And it felt That was that was the switch, right?
- 11:25Like, yeah, the way the game to kind of ended it was, was
- 11:32foretelling of how the game on Sunday was going to roll, right.
- 11:38I mean, so many times you see that in in all sports, I mean in
- 11:42all sports. You see it's the old, the old
- 11:46Avalanche effect, it starts and then all of a sudden it tumbles.
- 11:51But for the program in general Hello season.
- 11:55You know, in the season, ranked top five Why do a lot of top?
- 12:01Eight teams. We're losing.
- 12:03Not making it to Oklahoma City. For the World Series in, you
- 12:08know what, what, what what's really good in my opinion yet?
- 12:13We're losing killing right? She's an All-American, you know,
- 12:21years ago and I cannot think who was it?
- 12:25Another All-American picture. Why is it blinking on me?
- 12:30You don't get that kind of all every year.
- 12:33Now, what I will say is my opinion, is this Emma.
- 12:39Emma has a chance to be to get up in that upper echelon.
- 12:44Could you could she be he? Richard I can't put that on but
- 12:49I think you've got your number one going into next year.
- 12:52Where I don't think it's going to be a slip from top five to
- 12:55completely out. I think this team is going to be
- 12:57a top 20 team next year. Yeah, yeah, it's definitely,
- 13:01that gives you some some promise for what's going on in the
- 13:05future. It's going to be nice to see how
- 13:08Emma develops. Going into next year, especially
- 13:11with somewhat of a leadership role probably put on her heading
- 13:17into next year, so, but I don't think you see a steep ramp up
- 13:21with you. I think it's going to be, you
- 13:23know, a step back. I think it would be hard, not to
- 13:27say that there will be some step back, I think losing healing in
- 13:30particular. Just because of, you know how
- 13:32shut down. She was from Canada, season
- 13:35isn't really the majority of less your 23 years.
- 13:40Look at it that I think there's going to be potentially some
- 13:43step back especially early in the season but I think it's
- 13:46going to be alright I think I think they're going to still be
- 13:48a competitive team next year and looking forward to seeing what
- 13:51they do. Again for bringing with me,
- 13:54let's roll from the softball Diamond to the baseball diamond
- 13:58because after big Series wins against Louisville against Duke
- 14:03to close out the regular season, they lose in pool play, in the
- 14:07ACC tournament to eventual Champion care.
- 14:09Carolina, I don't like pool play format.
- 14:13I'll say that. Because it, if you're one of the
- 14:17best four teams, it gives, there's nothing there to be game
- 14:20where in reality, probably what should happen and I'm harping on
- 14:23this, I didn't mention you this earlier I was going to do it in
- 14:26reality. The top four seeds should be
- 14:28waiting for Friday night. And everybody else have to play
- 14:32to get there. And then you go from 8 to 4 to 2
- 14:37and there's your championship game.
- 14:39Not this, we're going to pull play, no, you want to pull play
- 14:44the other eight teams and let them figure out who can win, do
- 14:46it. If you're one of the best four
- 14:48teams in the ACC, you should be sitting Friday night with your
- 14:52one ready to play. Yeah, I agree.
- 14:56I agree. I think it's not the best
- 14:59format. You know that I'm a big believer
- 15:05in the format that you play in the regular season should be the
- 15:10format that kind of goes in the postseason.
- 15:12But we talked about that a lot with the email be wild card.
- 15:17And yes, I hate the fucking play in games.
- 15:20Yes, you did. I don't like pool play.
- 15:24I get why people. People do like it or at least,
- 15:28you know, give it, give it some some Credence there.
- 15:31But you should have more Advantage as a top for see than,
- 15:35just the tiebreaker in the pool. Yeah, that's yeah.
- 15:39Because it's two games. Yeah.
- 15:42It's two games and usually, they're starting midweek.
- 15:46So, if you're throwing your one, you're throwing your one on a
- 15:49short rest for them. So, you know, just get rid of
- 15:54that format top for because, you know, not everybody makes it
- 15:58their team's always left out because there's 12 teams.
- 16:01Usually, there are two or three teams that do not get invited,
- 16:04put your, for let your other eight played at the four best
- 16:07teams and then. But anyway, let's digress from
- 16:10that a top eight seed. Number four, seed in the
- 16:16country. From where this baseball program
- 16:20was just a few years ago, to be a national seed to have a
- 16:24Blacksburg Regional potential, Super Regional.
- 16:27I mean, it's the right guy was hired with makes another
- 16:34fantastic move. And I mean in the world of
- 16:39baseball, the collegiate baseball, if you can
- 16:42consistently get top aides, you are a national powerhouse.
- 16:47It's a question. Yeah.
- 16:49And I mean, this is very much the, you know, like the 2004
- 16:55football team. This team was not know, expected
- 16:58to do a whole lot. I think they were picked to
- 17:00finish what next to last or last next-to-last ACC.
- 17:04And here we are. You had the best team in the
- 17:08regular season you had had. It had a decent little run there
- 17:13in the championship and finished up with the horsey for the
- 17:17region. So I don't really think anybody
- 17:20could have expected more out of this team and they really
- 17:22stepped up and shown that, you know what?
- 17:25They've got going on there. That the kind of the mix of
- 17:28players that they have and the guys are bringing in, he is
- 17:31starting to turn to clip a little bit, especially if they
- 17:35can get you. Some steps up and pitching.
- 17:38If the pitching can be consistent.
- 17:40I mean, the way, the way, the way they knock the ball out of
- 17:43the park is just next level. And I think they got a fairly
- 17:49favorable draw in their region, release compared to some of the
- 17:54other ones out there. So Yeah.
- 17:58What are you? What's your thoughts on this
- 18:00pool of? Well, for the region will write
- 18:04State. We've already played this year
- 18:06and so we seeing what they have, I'll have to pull up real quick.
- 18:11That record Colombia is obviously the Ivy League school
- 18:16representation in and I don't want to not those two teams
- 18:21because they did win their conference.
- 18:23They did make it to the NCAA tournament, but But I'll look,
- 18:28we look at this bracket. It's Gonzaga in.
- 18:32That is your big problem because Gonzaga legitimately has an ace
- 18:41and they are really good pitching team, you know, under
- 18:45for totally are a for the whole team and they're led by a guy by
- 18:50the name of Gabriel Hughes and Hughes has a mid-90s guy with a,
- 18:56the reports are mid 90s guy with a strikeout slider in with a
- 19:00changeup that runs at about 79. He is intentionally and they're
- 19:06looking at in the Pro comparison with Max Scherzer.
- 19:09Prediction is likely a top-15 pick, he's 64, he's 230 pounds.
- 19:18His biggest issue was control. He's got his control under wraps
- 19:22in that shows this season where he struck out 131 and he walked
- 19:2735. Okay, so, so yeah, he wrote the
- 19:33consistency level there, but here's the deal.
- 19:39In all likelihood, this team will not see Gabriel Hughes
- 19:45because in the world of baseball you roll the biggest dice.
- 19:50If you don't throw your a saint game one and you know I'm gonna
- 19:56I'm gonna throw it here to local because I heard this story a
- 19:59couple days ago about the Regionals here in Richmond.
- 20:03Deep Run was playing Highland Springs, VA, 89 yang.
- 20:09Deep Run, chose not to throw their number one and apparently
- 20:12this kids really good like going somewhere to play college
- 20:14because they were like we need him for when we play the
- 20:17wannsee. Guess what happened?
- 20:21They lost to Highland Springs. They never got to throw their
- 20:23eggs. So we probably won't see Gabriel
- 20:26cues but we likely you're probably going to see a guy by
- 20:29the name of Owen wild. Aiden 13.3 are a if they win
- 20:36Friday. That's who we're probably going
- 20:37to look at Saturday but we seen this team.
- 20:41Hit. Good pitching?
- 20:42Yeah, yeah. Big time.
- 20:56Six. Again, that awful not terrible.
- 21:01Here's your big, here's your big differential, 37 home runs.
- 21:08That is a massive gap between 110 the Hokies put up in
- 21:13something. I was more shocked with and I
- 21:14brought this up to you a little earlier today.
- 21:17We're not when we were looking at their stats and I told Brian
- 21:19276. Not a lot of Homer's your first
- 21:21thought was okay. They're running team, then
- 21:24they've attempted less steals than the Hokies Hokies what are
- 21:29the Hokies at steel? Was you have that they're right.
- 21:34Where is my stolen bases. So, the basic tips. 71 out of
- 21:4287. This team has won 39 and 55.
- 21:47So they're not one of those teams that is getting on base
- 21:52and trying to run you and a lot of hit-and-runs clearly.
- 21:55So this, this isn't small bowl. No.
- 21:59Just, they are what they are. They are pitching team and Not
- 22:07seeing Hughes if they choose not to if they choose to you know
- 22:12throw him Friday which they should you know it's a hurdle to
- 22:17overcome and would you say Brian five?
- 22:20If we score more than five runs a game than they are.
- 22:24That's why I thought if we can get 67 runs that should do it.
- 22:31And we're averaging over 80 close to eight runs a game.
- 22:36Yeah. So if we can just get our
- 22:39average you should be able to handle them pretty well.
- 22:43Also, I can't wait to see the crowds out in Blacksburg the way
- 22:46they were with the softball team last weekend.
- 22:49Definitely going to be a rock and house for the baseball
- 22:52regionals there. You know it, I'm assuming.
- 22:57Do we have a TV time yet? For this one?
- 23:01I haven't seen it yet, but it's got to be out there because they
- 23:07usually put that stuff out there pretty quick.
- 23:11We're going to effort. This will take it out in the
- 23:13post-production. Laugh people, you get to see us
- 23:15stare at things Hang on. We're coming.
- 23:19We're coming. ESPN AC, oh my God you got to be
- 23:42kidding on acc Network, put it on acc Network, 7:00 Friday
- 23:48night. The network is good for
- 23:50something. Took long enough that's so
- 23:54annoying. Like you're like being Network
- 24:03Friday night 7:00. So those who are going in town
- 24:09for that, probably going to have two or three hours for little
- 24:11tailgate, maybe a little hidden downtown up, so maybe more of a
- 24:15raucous crowd, but I definitely think we see, Super Regionals,
- 24:21you probably already read. You know, who were lined up to
- 24:23play against Super Regionals if they win their Regional, the
- 24:28Florida Gators. Let's get them on here.
- 24:31Let's get paid back, let's do it.
- 24:35Let's do something else. We want to hit real quick.
- 24:40You will just announced a few weeks ago.
- 24:42Tim settle giving a significant gift to the football program.
- 24:46I think it's awesome to see a temp success.
- 24:48He's had in Washington sign on his deal with Buffalo this year
- 24:52but also seen, you know, not only him but obviously the
- 24:57Fuller's. But seeing these guys who are
- 25:00coming I'm through make it in the NFL turning back around in
- 25:05contributing to me there in the precedent.
- 25:08For any guy who goes out, has a good NFL career, give back to
- 25:13what made you got to love it. Look, Tim and general.
- 25:17I mean, awesome guy. Yeah, and I mean, I think you're
- 25:21some some of this is it's nice to see guys that I said, at the
- 25:25time. Hey.
- 25:28He dropped way too far in this trap.
- 25:33He's going to show you something in a couple years and he just
- 25:36one of those players. I know Kendall Kendall was one
- 25:38of those players to be somewhat he was able to do in in Casey
- 25:45and now with Washington again. So, you know, good on them for
- 25:50forgiving back to the program that they helped build.
- 25:55And you love to see it right here.
- 25:58Love to see the guys that you cheer for, you love to see their
- 26:00names on the building. You love.
- 26:02See their names on the rooms. I mean, it's just it's something
- 26:06that you can look back on those days and say, yeah, hey, I saw
- 26:10him play back in the day, I saw him play and he's doing big
- 26:14things here, and he's giving back said, the president, he's
- 26:18really doing what you should be doing.
- 26:20If you, you know what, if you make it to that level, remember
- 26:24where you came from? And no one had guy like Tim.
- 26:26I'm sure probably his hi School is reap rewards on to his
- 26:29community up in Northern Virginia, is recored with well.
- 26:32So big town, you know. Obviously he's playing for the
- 26:38bills. You can't root for him too hard.
- 26:40I can root form a little bit but you know good for Tim Lee.
- 26:47She's not in divisions. There you go.
- 26:51Alright, so one last piece before we go to break, we want
- 26:54to hit on is obviously the two-day trial.
- 26:58Came to an end this week. He was found.
- 27:02Obviously, if you haven't heard not guilty on second degree,
- 27:05murder charges. No additional charges since you
- 27:10were brought up against him, this is something.
- 27:13It was roughly a year old when everything broke almost to the
- 27:17day, almost to the day. We wanted to hit just a couple
- 27:23minutes of it. Because it needed to be
- 27:27addressed to recruit. He was a member of the Virginia
- 27:30Tech football team at that point in time.
- 27:35And it's kind of one of those things after we didn't say much
- 27:39on the year ago, because we knew a lot of things are going to
- 27:43start coming out and in the travel, a lot of things came
- 27:47out. There was a lot of speculation
- 27:48out, the gate this time last year, honey.
- 27:52And some of it we weren't sure what was fact and what was
- 27:56fiction we wanted to wait until everything came out before we
- 28:02had any sort of meaningful Discussion on this thing.
- 28:04Yeah. And I think we found out a lot
- 28:08at the trial and I think that ultimately you know if the
- 28:12charge is murder to that the ultimate the jury had to find
- 28:18him not guilty based on the information.
- 28:21Yeah, that's what it was as the evidence was being presented of
- 28:25everything that took place between him and the deceased.
- 28:30In this case you started it started stacking Enough.
- 28:33And as you started stacking up, and you think about what murder
- 28:36to is you read the definition by law.
- 28:38It's not murder too. If potentially the attorney, the
- 28:44District Attorney's down, there would have taken a different
- 28:48path. Maybe there's a different
- 28:50outcome, but they didn't. It wasn't murder to even if you
- 28:54take away the self defense situation, right?
- 29:00Well, I think that think that just sealed the deal on the
- 29:03whole thing. Absolutely.
- 29:04Once there was evidence that there a knife was present, then
- 29:08that really took it in a completely different direction
- 29:12110%. So that's closed.
- 29:16And, you know, whatever May going in that young man's life
- 29:20from here on out, God bless him and best of luck to him.
- 29:25And with that, before we get into more topics tonight, we are
- 29:29going to take a Quick pause for a message from our digital
- 29:31partners because we take a quick break.

- 29:53Now back to the episode All right, Brian.
- 29:56Let's get into some more football and a lot of football
- 29:59in the back half of this episode here.
- 30:02Let's start by taking a look at a recent commitment. 2023
- 30:06football, the on the top 25 somehow ranked 22nd right now
- 30:13in, just, a few days ago, the key, he thought of Highland
- 30:17Spring, then five foot nine hundred sixty five pounds, He's
- 30:23listed as an athlete, you know. Definitely going to look M at
- 30:27wideout probably Corner commit. He's a 3-star number 24 in
- 30:33Virginia. Would have you seen what have
- 30:38you heard and what do you think about mr.
- 30:40Heath potential in Blackbird, he's an athlete with a capital.
- 30:44A you said wide receiver. You said corner but he's also
- 30:49going to be a return specialist for us.
- 30:51I believe. So look for some of that either
- 30:55out the gate or at least by year to being a contributor there.
- 31:00I think this is a good pick up obviously you know you want to
- 31:02tap that Highland Springs tap as Much as you can.
- 31:07So I like it, I like I like that.
- 31:10It's continuing the trend with getting solid players from
- 31:17reputable institutions in and around the state.
- 31:21It's keeping that Trend going. It's still not a.
- 31:26You still haven't had that, you know, blow your skirt up yet.
- 31:32But at the same time, nothing but solid across the board.
- 31:37Yeah, I'm hoping that as we go into Camp season, which is what
- 31:42we're about to talk about a little bit more here.
- 31:44Once we get more into Camp season, we start seeing maybe at
- 31:47least one or two of those, you know, bigger fish.
- 31:51Start to start to come our way a little bit.
- 31:54But right now I'd say this is a good pickup, he's probably just
- 31:59below the hammer and and love it in my book in terms of where
- 32:05they stack up in this class. Yeah, I think it's a good
- 32:09pickup. All right?
- 32:11Yeah. I mean you just raised the
- 32:13question about when we're going to get the big one like when
- 32:18they're going to be that one where everybody kind of the
- 32:20Great. Has the eyebrow and also, I
- 32:23think about that but I also wonder when is this regime going
- 32:26to break through down the 75 or up and over?
- 32:29Because right now it's been, it's been Richmond kids.
- 32:35It's been, you know, Southwest Virginia kids along with
- 32:39obviously the ones on the out-of-state.
- 32:41So is there, anybody potentially?
- 32:45In the state of Virginia in the 75 in Nova where we can sit back
- 32:51here and kind of say okay, yeah that's going to be the
- 32:55Breakthrough one and is it maybe even not a breakthrough?
- 32:58Maybe not, you know, your high for or a four-star guy.
- 33:01But is it from an institution? That is known for rolling out?
- 33:07Continuous Prospect, that's why it's nice to see the Highland
- 33:10Springs as why it's nice to see a DeMatha, yeah.
- 33:15I think the thing to do is keep your eyes on Phoebus and Oscar
- 33:18Smith, I think there's some potential for us to make some
- 33:22some headwinds there. I think it Phoebus, probably
- 33:27maybe there's a Target in this class and I think an Oscar
- 33:30Smith. There's a Target in this class
- 33:31and the next class that could potentially cause a little bit
- 33:36of a shift there. But I think when you talk about
- 33:40Richmond compared to Nova and 757.
- 33:43I think we released with the last regime, sat better in
- 33:47Richmond, that we sat in 757 and Noble and I think I think the
- 33:53reputation of Virginia Tech was a lot more solid in the RV.
- 33:58A at the end of Wednesday's regime than it was in the 75 and
- 34:03Nova. I think this is just again price
- 34:07talked about building those bridges and repairing.
- 34:09Those things he had a lot more work to do with Nova and a lot
- 34:12more work to do in the 75 than the average Point.
- 34:15That's a day of the point to make.
- 34:16Because at the end of that regime, we were picking off some
- 34:20kids from Richmond to flip at the end.
- 34:23Look, the kid for it from a teleca, getting some 7, getting
- 34:26some Holland spring kids to walk in.
- 34:29So I think like price said, we've got to build
- 34:33relationships, we don't have them here yet the sort of that
- 34:38when JC came in that kind of Next map, completely fixed.
- 34:43But put some duct tape and some of the series on the
- 34:47relationship down in Richmond. Definitely went or and obviously
- 34:51we're reaping a little bit of the rewards from that.
- 34:53Right now. He brought the belt sander and
- 34:56smooth it out a little bit. Be smooth that out a little bit
- 34:59and then Prime this regime along JC, you know.
- 35:04We feel good about Richmond, Brian.
- 35:08If you did not see the news, I think you Did the 25 recruiting
- 35:12Limit Out 2023 and 2024? What do you think about that?
- 35:18No limits. It's better than nothing.
- 35:20I would have, honestly preferred to have three to five more
- 35:25scholarships tacked, onto the 85 then, for the next two years to
- 35:29be unlimited. But in terms of how this affects
- 35:32us, I think we may not go over 25 in 23 big just because it is
- 35:38a rebuilding year. Yeah.
- 35:40We'll probably not sitting the best with some of the more
- 35:43higher caliber players are classes going to be mostly
- 35:48mid-to-high three stars. Anyway, it's not going to have a
- 35:51ton of four stars, but I think in 24 when we're under 85 really
- 35:57well at that point and we're starting to make some Headway in
- 36:02the state and around our footprint a little bit more
- 36:05where we're established. I think that's when you take a
- 36:08shot and load up as much in the boat.
- 36:10As you can because, you know, you'll be able to get
- 36:14essentially all of those spores that you're targeting.
- 36:17And then all of those threes that are in that, you know,
- 36:20hiring three rains that you're targeting, then make some some
- 36:24business decisions on the back in with those mid to low three
- 36:28star kids. Yeah.
- 36:32Well the whole thing that this year, you say no the only way
- 36:36this year, you can get that bump is if you win.
- 36:40Like if you if you tell me if your tell me, you're thinking 67
- 36:46wins, I think, with our schedule, we can get six and I
- 36:50think I think six is enough to roll into 24 with with a little
- 36:56bit of momentum. I go, mr.
- 37:00Brightside. Let's say, print pride comes in
- 37:02and wins nine games, can he attacked when we attack 23 more,
- 37:07because then you're talking about, it's a regime change.
- 37:10It's a it is a coaching staff that can recruit better and
- 37:14you're coming out year one and winning nine games going to a
- 37:17solid Bowl. Obviously, if you're doing that
- 37:20their players producing on the field.
- 37:23Well, I guess the question is going to be, can you, is there
- 37:26going to be enough players left at the end of this cycle?
- 37:29Once you get Results on the board to really make some, some
- 37:33late season flips and if you are able to do that, is there enough
- 37:38that still keeps you under 85? Because more than likely we're
- 37:42going to use that one scholarship open that we have.
- 37:45I would say to fill in at least one need position before the
- 37:48start of fall came. Maybe um because obviously
- 37:55you've already mentioned it, you know it we're June 1st, there's
- 38:00been no discussion of additional scholarships from the NCAA.
- 38:04We thought it would be like three to five just to help teens
- 38:07out, but it's not hurting teams. It's hurting kids, they're going
- 38:13to be a lot of kids that don't have don't have a home.
- 38:16They're basically screwing the student-athlete great job into a
- 38:21Screw student-athletes. That's what we're here for
- 38:24versus. If you give three to five, open
- 38:27scholarships to every team. What's that a minimum of 400
- 38:33additional kids in the portal would find homes because they
- 38:36would find homes? Yes.
- 38:38Oh, what is? He double A decided to do is
- 38:40that they said, okay well we understand that the situation we
- 38:47put them in with the covid year and then having no relief is
- 38:50going To put pressure on the Freshman incoming classes, we're
- 38:55going to give them some relief. So most of freshmen that would
- 38:59have found homes. Normally are still going to find
- 39:02homes, but we're literally going to fuck anybody that wanted to
- 39:05give the portal. Yeah, that is in a high-caliber
- 39:08front, front end, immediate starter, at most power, 5,
- 39:13institution type player. Yeah, developmental players is
- 39:17where it's true. Yeah.
- 39:18In the thing, is with developmental players, you had
- 39:20three, 25, every school will take a swing.
- 39:24And a kid, every school would take a swing at three to five
- 39:28kids to get on their roster just to be like, he has potential.
- 39:32What if we're the guys that unlock it?
- 39:36They are so it's such an enough Institute.
- 39:39I don't want to go into a TWA continues to have their head up
- 39:42their own ass. Oh that's not that's not going
- 39:45to change until I see definitive proof.
- 39:50I'm going to completely continue to shit all over them.
- 39:54They are a awful governing body especially when it comes to the
- 40:02things that ironically make them the most money.
- 40:07Exactly. All right.
- 40:10Let's put the this Brian being used last week broke for shop
- 40:16for now on the Highland Springs defensive lineman D, committing,
- 40:21after Simon has Loi. There is so many things not
- 40:27adding up to this story. I mean, every you want to know
- 40:32why, because when he committed about Days.
- 40:37Prior to this announcement of be commitment.
- 40:39I mean he was literally one of the first guys that was on his
- 40:43post. Oh yeah.
- 40:45I mean like you said as of just a few days before this went down
- 40:50he was he was retweeting and saying, welcome home brother,
- 40:53and all this other stuff. So obviously whatever has
- 40:57happened was something that either was unforeseen or was
- 41:03something that somebody thought somebody was doing something and
- 41:08they weren't we've had Whispers and stuff on the timeline about
- 41:15the off. The field stuff playing a role
- 41:18here. We don't know what it is.
- 41:20I'm not going to speculate what it is.
- 41:23Yeah, we don't see it seems like that is the why I'm not specific
- 41:29here but generally that's the why I think the what's next is
- 41:33what's most important is it Point, this isn't a prior regime
- 41:38failure here. This is just one of those things
- 41:41that happens. So well the what's next is this
- 41:45is just a gray shirt, is he, is he going to Juco for a year?
- 41:50He said his approval is still open.
- 41:51I don't know if that is if If we, if he at this point, I don't
- 41:57know if we've read about it as Lor we haven't gotten official
- 42:00word on that. Yeah, this point if we have and
- 42:04some other institution wants to pick him up and I guess it's
- 42:08free game, but otherwise this looks like a potential Juco and
- 42:12then we kind of make potentially, keep our
- 42:14relationship with them and try to Circle back for for the next
- 42:19class here. Yeah, it's going to be very key
- 42:22of what he does, whether it's a prep or giucose, You we don't
- 42:26see a lot of guys prep anymore, but depending on what the
- 42:29situation is, if you see him go prep, I fully expect him to come
- 42:34back to Tech if he goes Juco. That's usually a little longer
- 42:39rap because if you're going Juco, it's almost a two-year
- 42:42commitment. It would you co school and then
- 42:45getting two years at your four-year institution.
- 42:49So what in the oncoming days and obviously we'll be following
- 42:53this when he makes a decision of what.
- 42:55Going to do next year but it's just it kind of hurts your heart
- 43:00because he is under the radar. He is one of those Team guys and
- 43:06you love when he committed it, even though he's always been
- 43:09kind of the tweener. Was he going to be a big end?
- 43:12Is he going to play? You know?
- 43:14Undersized 3. You felt like he was going to
- 43:17have success here and now it's back seated at a position of
- 43:23need. Where if he Comes into Tech over
- 43:26the summer, gets on the way program.
- 43:29We figure out his body type in 6 months he could be potentially
- 43:33helping out next year. So it stinks on every single
- 43:37front from, you know, just a personal standpoint of liking a
- 43:42kid and then from a standpoint of football saying this guy,
- 43:46potentially could have helped the team in 2024 as a depth
- 43:49piece in years down the road. Yeah, I mean, you know, we
- 43:53talked glowingly about, Ishod Purnell on this podcast is one
- 43:57of our favorite recruits from this class so this isn't
- 44:01something that we're saying are we doesn't matter.
- 44:03He definitely matters and not just because he's a potential as
- 44:10a true freshman of potential 3D that either your defensive in or
- 44:17playing three technique there. That's not, that's not the only
- 44:19thing that we're talking about here, we're talking about its
- 44:22This is just a player that the type of player that you want to
- 44:25have on your team, from a leadership perspective and the
- 44:29way he was recruiting other players to come to Blacksburg.
- 44:33That's the type of player you want on your roster.
- 44:35Full, stop always. So it definitely hurts anybody
- 44:38saying otherwise, you know, You're lying to yourself.
- 44:44I mean, it still, if it's a big move I just don't think it
- 44:47necessarily is something that we can really dwell on because it's
- 44:52not really anything that the program could have done
- 44:54differently to stop this from happening.
- 44:56Exactly. All right, let's flip this.
- 45:00It's that if the title of our episode Camp season in buddy, do
- 45:04they have them in Blacksburg this month seven camps?
- 45:09Basically, from now until I think the 26th, Is the last one
- 45:13or 27, that is a lot of camps in a short period of time and then
- 45:18one additional one in July. You know this is this is what it
- 45:26was pre kovin. This is what we saw every year.
- 45:29Yeah so this is the return of what I think a lot of us have
- 45:35been missing about the offseason is Yap like this where you get
- 45:39guys on campus? A lot of the time were come out
- 45:43see how they do get a lot of some offers Throne that weren't
- 45:48committable all of a sudden our and you get a bunch of people in
- 45:50the boat at one Yeah, you get these these guys that you know,
- 45:57you were on the fence but they get to Blacksburg.
- 45:59They enjoy that good time. The camp and all of a sudden, a
- 46:02guy that was a Penn State or UNC, lean is now committed to
- 46:06Virginia Tech, that's the type of shit we like to see.
- 46:09That's the type of shit that I hope we see in the coming weeks
- 46:12and I'm looking forward to it. I'm really always.
- 46:15This is one of my favorite times is kind of seeing how this plays
- 46:19out on the recruiting Trail. So I'm looking forward to to
- 46:21June and and what we're able to accomplish.
- 46:24Hopefully on the recruiting Trail 100%.
- 46:26And you mentioned it already. Like I always think it's always
- 46:30like I'm thinking right now. 23 sleepers, there's probably some
- 46:33low rated three star that's going to get to the camp and at
- 46:36these camps are a lot of times there's Rivals.
- 46:39There's two four seven Riders, there's evaluators for them.
- 46:42They're right. There's guys on getting height
- 46:45weight clocking looking how they did on shuttle drills, how they
- 46:48perform in these activities we don't want to know.
- 46:51Yes, yes, we do. For those who are really
- 46:55interested in a camp, our episode.
- 46:58It's June 23rd of last year with Coach, Robbie something you want
- 47:02to know what goes on inside these camps.
- 47:04Listen to that episode beginning in because it is a great
- 47:08knowledge point of what happens. But you sit here and I'm sitting
- 47:11here thinking, there's going to be some kid that's on our radar.
- 47:16Maybe an in-state kid that we really want heavy, he gets down
- 47:21He blows Camp up. And actually coach come thing.
- 47:27Yep, there it goes right there. It's who's going to camp for
- 47:29free? That's who to watch.
- 47:31I don't know how we can determine that Robbie you and I
- 47:35will find out. But but who's the sleeper, who's
- 47:40the kid who they thought was? 511 is actually 62.
- 47:44Who's the kid? They thought was 170 s actually
- 47:46190. Who's the kid?
- 47:49That's got more muscle mass because a lot of these kids have
- 47:52not been seen in six to eight months and now they're going to
- 47:56start being seen again. Now, you mentioned it though,
- 47:59these kids have only been seen in past and they haven't been
- 48:02seen up close and personal. So that's really something else
- 48:04too. I'll never forget.
- 48:07Give me invite up to UVA. And Ron Prince telling me that I
- 48:11look bigger and pads Fuck him till this day.
- 48:20Yeah, Ibis. I must look bigger and pads.
- 48:23Fuck you. But it's also Brian mentioned,
- 48:26getting a kid on campus that potentially may be texting the
- 48:30top five and you can get them in and closing flip them, but it's
- 48:34also a great chance now come by building relationships.
- 48:38We've heard it from Brent pry, the whole time.
- 48:40Getting the jump on 24, we're behind Prize already admitted
- 48:46that, but having these camps and having these younger kids come
- 48:49in quicker, way to get that relationship built is having
- 48:53them in house and having your staff.
- 48:56You know that we feel is significantly better than what
- 48:59we had get in there ear and show them things and, you know,
- 49:04preach what we want here at Virginia Tech.
- 49:09Yeah, like I said, I think this is a, this is a good time to
- 49:11find those sleepers guys that are bigger than you thought.
- 49:15I think the bigger thing for me is that, you know, I want to see
- 49:18us some of the bigger names that we've been targeting on this
- 49:22trail that you talked about earlier, won't be, get that big
- 49:26fish. Here's where you get those guys
- 49:29on campus in an environment with a lot of other guys and they
- 49:33start selling the program to themselves, right?
- 49:36I mean there's going to be other players that have already
- 49:38committed. They're coming to these Cancers
- 49:40and the other players that have a heavy interest in Virginia
- 49:43Tech that are going to sell it. Sell this thing for you a little
- 49:46bit, once you get everybody in one area, let's close some of
- 49:50those bigger fish. Let's get maybe a flip here and
- 49:53there of guys that are leaning to other schools and get a
- 49:58little bit of momentum, I think we're doing pretty well on the
- 50:01recruiting Trail overall, but I want to see more of those High
- 50:04threes and maybe low four stars in this class.
- 50:08I'd like to see A couple of them thrown in there too, so we can
- 50:11get a little momentum carried into next year.
- 50:14I know we're behind this year. Everybody knows we're behind
- 50:17this year at the same time. We got to start winning some of
- 50:20these winnable battles so we can start climbing the ladder a
- 50:23little bit exactly. Alright Brawn.
- 50:28So Every year cbs4, the puts together, their top 65.
- 50:36Power five, coaches. You guys don't recall.
- 50:40Last year we actually run. We did ours.
- 50:44We talked about our opt-in coaches fun to do.
- 50:47It's fun to discuss. Usually the guy that does it is
- 50:51time for Nellie and I'll say this comp or Nelly is one of my
- 50:53favorite college football writers out there.
- 50:56He is, is he comes at it with a very different approach.
- 51:00He's a really intelligent guy, he lives up in Big Ten country
- 51:03so he doesn't have You know he's I think he's an Illinois grad or
- 51:08he likes Illinois or that's the closest team doing good.
- 51:11Have the automatic SEC buys he might have subconscious as
- 51:15exactly. So he came up with the list this
- 51:20year and I pulled it up and he only did his top 25 first and
- 51:24it's the it's the normal stuff and you know but then he
- 51:27released 26 265 just a few days ago and of course I clicked on
- 51:33it because I wanted to see his thoughts on Brent.
- 51:35Fry. Well.
- 51:39I'm still a fan but Tom Fornelli ranked Brent price 65 of 65 in.
- 51:46This is what he put on him and not some of the other guys were
- 51:50going to discuss here. I have a simple rule for filling
- 51:53out my ballot. If you've never been a head
- 51:55coach before, you're starting at the bottom of my rankings.
- 51:58That's not true. We'll discuss that in a second.
- 52:01Many of my fellow voters feel the same, so price shouldn't
- 52:05take it personally as the new head, man at Virginia Tech for
- 52:09Pears to begin his first season as a head coach at any level.
- 52:13All right. Okay cool.
- 52:16Now there are six guys on here that are first-time head
- 52:20coaches. In addition to Brent fry.
- 52:23That we're going to talk about the first three.
- 52:26I have absolutely no issue with where they're ranked and that
- 52:29they're ranked ahead of a front pry.
- 52:31You just lick before, we get to the veins, let me throw a caveat
- 52:34out here. This isn't a ranking of baseball
- 52:40on the roster makeup or based on the roster town are based on
- 52:43this that and the third this is literally just based on what
- 52:47this coach has done in the past where they are ranked right now.
- 52:52Has nothing to Do what their current year, roster makeup or
- 52:54any of that shit. So, with that being the, the
- 53:00parameters, I'll let Curtis continue here.
- 53:03All right, there for guys are tuning, three guys that do the
- 53:07pedigree of the coach and where they landed.
- 53:10I have absolutely no issue with wear their rank or that they're
- 53:13ranked had a Brent pry. One is Brent, venables venables
- 53:18has been one of the best defensive coordinators over the
- 53:20last 10 years in college football.
- 53:23He's ranked 45th. No issue.
- 53:25Also, Tom you put somebody way really high as a first-year head
- 53:29coach. So you're not living by your own
- 53:31rules. Sexy venables could have been
- 53:34higher if some of the Oklahoma's best talent had a trip out to
- 53:39Southern Cal but he still got top 15.
- 53:41Yeah he's exactly, but I'm saying, he could have been top
- 53:4440 if he did lose a decent portion of his down.
- 53:49I'm the second is Marcus Freeman at Notre Dame I have no issue
- 53:53with them being there with his credentials coaching there last
- 53:56year. No issue with him being there.
- 53:59I have no issue with the Georgia.
- 54:01Defensive coordinator, Dan Landing, who went up to Oregon
- 54:04at 54. No issue.
- 54:06You've been, you know, coordinator Georgia won the
- 54:08National Championship. He's going to a pretty much
- 54:11about a top-10 roster. No issues, no issue.
- 54:17So I'm cool with those guys. But again, we're not supposed to
- 54:20pay no attention to the roster. So I don't know how I feel like
- 54:25the rankings are paying attention to the roster even
- 54:28though they're saying they're not on their parenting to the
- 54:31roster and where they go. Well, you would think that but
- 54:34then, you know, we go here. These are my three issues and
- 54:39we're going to start at number 62 and it's Joey McGuire.
- 54:45No, John McGuire is Brian. I do now makes this technique
- 54:52Texas Tech head coach you got hard really early in the
- 54:54process? I think he was the first guy
- 54:57now. You know, Fornelli puts on here
- 55:00about how excited the fans are, as he has High School
- 55:04connections in the state of Texas.
- 55:05But basically up until 2017 he was a high school football coach
- 55:10in Texas. The last five years.
- 55:13He's been a coach not a coordinator.
- 55:17And associate head coach at Baylor under Matt ruin.
- 55:21Dave Aranda, Brian, how long has Brent pry?
- 55:25Coached Collegiate football. A lot longer than Joey McGwire
- 55:32Galloping. So you sit here and it's like,
- 55:36yeah, Joey's, a good recruiter, but Joey's coached at the
- 55:40highest level of Collegiate football for five years and he
- 55:44wasn't even a coordinator who says 26 years to do you count
- 55:50his GA time or the time he was at East Prosper with East.
- 55:55The the D to school before he came to GAA. 29. 29 years.
- 56:03So there's my first issue. This is his first head coach
- 56:07job, just as Brent Pride, he is coach for five years.
- 56:11He's never ran. He's not a particular coach.
- 56:13He is a recruiting coach he's just been two years younger than
- 56:17Pride. He's only yeah, two years young
- 56:18and pie. He also is going to Lubbock,
- 56:23there's been two people that had success at Texas Tech Spike
- 56:26Dykes and Mike Leach no one else has had success at Texas Tech in
- 56:31the last 35 years. So minimal time is a high as a
- 56:38Collegiate coach going to a program that has only had two
- 56:42good runs of success. In recruiting against the likes
- 56:46of Brent, venables, against Texas, A&M against Texas against
- 56:51LSU against Arkansas. He's 62 them.
- 56:58Prime. Yeah, I really don't have.
- 57:07I put him dead last because of coaching me was file is based on
- 57:13cozy experience and pedigree of program dead fucking last.
- 57:18Now the next guy who is one spot ahead, is the one you really
- 57:22went off on today and that's Mike Elko who is going to do
- 57:28Elko, basically started really guided his flame going at Wake
- 57:33Forest. Had a good defense there.
- 57:35Went to Notre Dame. Good.
- 57:37Offensive coordinator there. And then he went to Texas, A&M
- 57:41with Jimbo and put together. Good defense.
- 57:45They're not world-beater, but a good defense.
- 57:49He's going to do. Elko has not coached as long as
- 57:54pry. But Brian going because you were
- 57:58on a soliloquy earlier today like how badly people might go
- 58:01ahead of him. Number one, he's into
- 58:04automatically automatically should put him Below.
- 58:07Virginia Tech number two, he's coming from Texas A&M.
- 58:12He has a defense that in the time that they were sharing
- 58:16defensive coordinator rolls per I had better.
- 58:18Overall defense has. Let's also talk about how Texas
- 58:22A&M is essential to UNC of the fucking suc.
- 58:26And yeah, they can recruit. Yeah, they get all this talent
- 58:28but they don't do shit with a twins.
- 58:32I mean. Texas A&M has not one shit, at
- 58:38least, brick cry. And our buddy, James Franklin
- 58:42have done something in the Big Ten.
- 58:44They want me to be know how to State.
- 58:47They believe they've done the things that you want a team to
- 58:50do. So I mean I just pedigree wise I
- 58:55don't think what Elko did it? Texas A&M was any more
- 58:58impressive than what Pride did at Penn State and I think that
- 59:04cry He's at the better program right now.
- 59:06Yeah. And that's that's no bias but if
- 59:10you can present bias to this I'll gladly listen to it.
- 59:13But Duke is not a better football program.
- 59:15The Virginia Tech. Know.
- 59:18So and even in our worst we blew the last year we were so.
- 59:27So so please, you know, in the bullshit there, you know, and I
- 59:32know it's one spot. but, Motherfucker, you 64 Brin price
- 59:40should be at least one spot ahead of him in 63, which 63 is
- 59:45dickered from Washington who I did put on here because the guy
- 59:48Coast, half a season, had a good record.
- 59:50He should have been significantly further down the
- 59:52list. That's my opinion, but he's
- 59:55going from Notre Dame and am to preferable, top, 10 recruiting
- 1:00:02getting a lot of talent programs to do.
- 1:00:05He's going back to his Wait days where his best defense was 46,
- 1:00:08which for Wake is very good, he's very good.
- 1:00:13So what you're telling me is he's going to have Duke, oh it's
- 1:00:19coming. It's coming.
- 1:00:21Put that on the screen, it's coming.
- 1:00:25So At least one spot ahead of might go join McGuire at the end
- 1:00:30because Jordan choir hadn't have the thing now, last but not
- 1:00:34least. Tony Elliott.
- 1:00:39Tony Pony. So it will never die, its 60th,
- 1:00:45they will never die. So basically this is the thing,
- 1:00:49the longtime Clemson offensive coordinator finally gets his
- 1:00:52chance to run the show on his own.
- 1:00:54Elliott has coaching great players in his time with the
- 1:00:56Tigers and he thinks Virginia is the perfect place to take
- 1:01:01commands. He inherits an offensive, scored
- 1:01:03a lot of points last season. His offense last season didn't
- 1:01:07score, a lot of points as an offensive coordinator, and they
- 1:01:10haven't scored a lot of points since Trevor's.
- 1:01:12Last year. My issue again with the Virginia
- 1:01:17thing in toning was a CO o see when they want a national
- 1:01:23championship with Jeff Scott so he was a coating.
- 1:01:25See not the full time OC. Jeff Scott obviously went South
- 1:01:28Florida. That's really ugly.
- 1:01:30He's probably getting fired in October and let's see well the
- 1:01:34miracle out. But again, I look at this and
- 1:01:37it's like, okay, he's had, he's not coached as long but he's had
- 1:01:42more success. So, if you want to put them
- 1:01:45ahead that's fine in that case, but I look at where he's going.
- 1:01:50I also look at the regimes around them.
- 1:01:55Do brown. You said it to me earlier today.
- 1:01:58Who are their best tires? I mean, their best hires were,
- 1:02:02there were tensions, keeping Hagen's and keeping 2J where
- 1:02:05their best hires kitchens is the only outside higher than anyone
- 1:02:10would honestly get their skirt blown up a little bit over.
- 1:02:14So you got three guys most of them on the offensive side of
- 1:02:19the ball there. You know, what's the defense
- 1:02:24giving look like what they going to do on defense?
- 1:02:27They they were awful on defense. They were also in the secondary.
- 1:02:32So, I don't know if that's going to be a better situation for
- 1:02:34them and that's even if we're counting, you know, makeup of
- 1:02:37the roster and all this other bullshit.
- 1:02:39Well, make up a roster, your coaching staff in general
- 1:02:42because I think, you know, if you look at what Brent, did
- 1:02:46coaching staff wise to me, you take, you take a guy like Chris
- 1:02:51Moore who was, is a protege of his who had been an SCC in an
- 1:02:56FSU for a few years. You take a guy like Derek Jones,
- 1:03:00who has Q coach did you come to cutcliffe who coached at Ole
- 1:03:04Miss and Texas? Tech he is a proven division.
- 1:03:07One football coach. There is no more no less than to
- 1:03:11say that about him and then got like Boeing and FL hope, you
- 1:03:20know, ACC guy. But then in just, just in this
- 1:03:24alone, Grim Pride, getting joe Rudolph should put him ahead of
- 1:03:28Tony Elliott. He literally went out and got
- 1:03:31one of the best offensive line coach been in the country and
- 1:03:33convinced him to come together as good as retaining to Jay was
- 1:03:37Rudolph. Definitely Trump them try.
- 1:03:39If you're retaining to Jay, he's your best coaching move and the
- 1:03:43coaching move, the Promenade was better than that.
- 1:03:46But that game over man came in but if it's just them Ron I'll
- 1:03:51look at Brent Prime say Brooke prai has been at Vanderbilt and
- 1:03:54Penn State. The one thing that he has been
- 1:03:57the whole time as he is been the defensive coordinator or Cody,
- 1:04:00see is consistency. Where Tony, especially with DJ.
- 1:04:08The wheels fell off a little bit with Kelly Bryant.
- 1:04:12Remember Kelly, Brian, I do. The team was good.
- 1:04:17Not great on offense. Yeah.
- 1:04:20And it can we say this too? I mean, I know that Tony's had
- 1:04:25some success recruiting in a lot of different areas with this is
- 1:04:29still his first time coaching outside of South Carolina.
- 1:04:33It is It is you Berman, what Berman and Clemson, right?
- 1:04:38Yeah, that's it. So we're in product and what?
- 1:04:45Pennsylvania Virginia Georgia Tennessee, Pennsylvania.
- 1:04:53So basically he's got like a weird little diamond shape.
- 1:04:57He's touched pretty much everywhere in the footprint in
- 1:05:00terms of recruiting in his career.
- 1:05:03So at worst and worst, I believe Brent price.
- 1:05:08Should be 62 worst. So we'll see.
- 1:05:13We'll see. But the first two I think got me
- 1:05:16more than anything. The last one.
- 1:05:17It's a UVA coach. So, we have to talk about it.
- 1:05:21We haven't talked shit because it's UVA and, and Elliot was a
- 1:05:24primary target for a lot of the fan base and potentially win, at
- 1:05:29least when he started the process because of how far
- 1:05:32things. Got what?
- 1:05:34Looks like they got in last cycle when we thought, went a
- 1:05:38was going to get fired after 2020.
- 1:05:40So we just listen, our brains were a little loose, then that's
- 1:05:45all I can say our brains were a little bit loose during because
- 1:05:50we were, we had Scar Tissue, we just needed a change, who's
- 1:05:54needed a change? Well, I think, you know you get
- 1:05:56more information. I think we saw your 2021 if
- 1:06:00nothing else gave us a glimpse. Clemson's offense without Trevor
- 1:06:06Lawrence. Well, but 2016, or 2017 gave us
- 1:06:11a view of them without DeShaun Watson.
- 1:06:14The writing was kind of on the wall then.
- 1:06:17And then they get Trevor for the next three seasons and won a
- 1:06:20national championship, make way. All the only thing you can see
- 1:06:23right now is that he's definitely walking into a
- 1:06:25favorable quarterback situation and UVA, he is, but they've lost
- 1:06:30some stuff there. All right.
- 1:06:35So speaking of changes, Brian. I sent you this article because
- 1:06:38you hadn't seen it. The town of Blacksburg is
- 1:06:43proposing and is our last little bit of the night.
- 1:06:46The town of blackburg is proposing tweaks to the mass
- 1:06:50outdoor Gathering ordinance because of what happens on
- 1:06:54Center Street steering game days.
- 1:06:59Yeah, somehow, this is getting played on his like, well people
- 1:07:03are having parties in their walking off the paths, on the
- 1:07:06way to the stadium walking, they're going through the woods
- 1:07:10and they're going off the path. Listen.
- 1:07:15First of all, they need to be very kind of glad.
- 1:07:18You literally have this section right here where the mass amount
- 1:07:22of students I would guess. Last time we walk through their
- 1:07:25back in 19 this probably that that was a lightness.
- 1:07:29Probably 700 kids there. Yeah.
- 1:07:32Yeah and that was on a Thanksgiving weekend so I'm
- 1:07:35assuming it's probably five to seven hundred more.
- 1:07:40On the normal game day. So probably 1500 kids?
- 1:07:42You're at least getting kids congregated in one location near
- 1:07:46the stadium. In the some of the crap that
- 1:07:50they're proposing is just stupid.
- 1:07:51It's like what's also do but it's like they're here but it's
- 1:07:59not even enforceable. Like what's the point of the
- 1:08:02wanted to point out of the point of the word means?
- 1:08:04But any, any in their talk about people going through the woods,
- 1:08:07getting knocked off path and the drunkenness and all, well, a
- 1:08:09they're in college. It's just going to happen.
- 1:08:12But here's a bigger key. If you go to a Virginia Tech
- 1:08:15football game or if you have been going, especially over the
- 1:08:17last Decade, the Center Street has gotten bigger and bigger and
- 1:08:20bigger. you know, not to go to Center Street, it's going to be
- 1:08:28Bash. It's going to be a lot of
- 1:08:30people. It's going to be tougher to get
- 1:08:31down Center Street through the woods over to the stadium.
- 1:08:36In those Common Sense fans are going to avoid Center Street if
- 1:08:40if they have a problem with it. Yeah, if they have a problem
- 1:08:43with that type of atmosphere on their way to the stadium, which
- 1:08:47is all non family-friendly atmosphere on the way to the
- 1:08:51stadium. I'm using air quotes there for
- 1:08:54the people listening important. Just I mean this is this is no
- 1:09:03fun police. Yeah, the no fun police.
- 1:09:07It's it's very to me is very counterproductive because if you
- 1:09:13go to the game you know what it is.
- 1:09:19So you know to avoid it and in some cases like for us if we go
- 1:09:25just me and brine well we probably partaking walking
- 1:09:28through Center Street to go to the stadium yet because it's you
- 1:09:31know, huh. Make sure you reminisce on
- 1:09:34Saturday. Yeah.
- 1:09:38Back in my day. But so for those out there who
- 1:09:47live in Blacksburg, you know, go and just say this is stupid,
- 1:09:50stop it right there. And we know one of our favorite
- 1:09:55people will be probably at that town council meeting.
- 1:09:59Just Jeremy. Don't drink any Jameson before
- 1:10:01you go. Okay, we can wear the crown.
- 1:10:04You can wait. You're not mrs.
- 1:10:09Bartel Brian is anything broken since we started, hey, only an
- 1:10:13hour. And 10 minutes.
- 1:10:14This is a short episode. So trim episode number by our
- 1:10:19standards at least, not seeing anything.
- 1:10:22That's broken in the last little while here.
- 1:10:26So that is going to wrap up this episode of The Boundary Corner
