- 0:00Speaker 1: You know, some of the first studies are coming out
- 0:02Speaker 1: now about the GLP-1 preps that so many people are
- 0:08Speaker 1: using right now and losing weight. And it's intriguing. This
- 0:13Speaker 1: is the first one that really looked at two major
- 0:15Speaker 1: side effects that are showing up. So if you're on
- 0:18Speaker 1: one of those GLP-1s, there are ways to protect around this.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Let's take a look at that. That's what we're going
- 0:23Speaker 1: to talk about today. Stay tuned. Hi, and welcome to
- 0:27Speaker 1: Health Talk with Dr. Lin, your daily dose. The information
- 0:30Speaker 1: you hear on this show is informational. It's not meant
- 0:33Speaker 1: to diagnose or treat any disease. Any kind of complete
- 0:37Speaker 1: health conditions must be checked out and discussed with your
- 0:41Speaker 1: primary care physician. Get ready for the good news of
- 0:44Speaker 1: the day. God bless you folks. And here is Dr. Lent.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Our daily devotional today, October 21st, 2026, comes from the
- 0:55Speaker 1: book of Psalms, chapter 139. To live in my presence
- 0:58Speaker 1: consistently You must expose and expel your rebellious tendencies. When
- 1:04Speaker 1: something interferes with your plans or desires, you tend to
- 1:07Speaker 1: resent my interference. Try to become aware of each resentment,
- 1:11Speaker 1: however petty it may seem. Ask my spirit to increase
- 1:15Speaker 1: your awareness of resentful feelings. Bring them boldly into the
- 1:18Speaker 1: light of my presence so that I can free you
- 1:20Speaker 1: from them. The ultimate solution to rebellious tendencies is submission
- 1:24Speaker 1: to my authority over you. The best response to losses
- 1:28Speaker 1: or thwarted hopes His praise. The Lord gives and the
- 1:32Speaker 1: Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Remember that all good things, your possessions, your family and friends,
- 1:39Speaker 1: your health and abilities, your time, are gifts from me.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Instead of feeling entitled to all those blessings, respond to
- 1:46Speaker 1: them with gratitude. Be prepared to let go of anything
- 1:49Speaker 1: I take from you, but never let go of my hand.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Stay tuned.... 727-916-4215 to reach me off air. The new
- 2:55Speaker 1: study presented at the 2026 European Academy of Dermatology compared
- 3:22Speaker 1: 575 GLP-1 users with 1,329 people who had type 2 diabetes, obesity,
- 3:29Speaker 1: or both, who had never taken the drugs. Researchers recruited
- 3:33Speaker 1: participants in France, the United States, Brazil, and Mexico. Nail
- 3:38Speaker 1: detachment and discoloration appear to be more common among people
- 3:41Speaker 1: in GLP-1 weight loss than diabetes drugs, a recent study found.
- 3:46Speaker 1: But its authors said that that shouldn't stop the patients
- 3:48Speaker 1: from taking them. The biggest gap was in nail detachment,
- 3:53Speaker 1: where the nail separates from the nail bed. 39% of
- 3:56Speaker 1: GLP-1 users reported this, compared with 9% of non-users. Nail
- 4:02Speaker 1: discoloration was reported by 46% of GLP-1 users and 17%
- 4:08Speaker 1: of nons. Overall, 66% of GLP-1 users reported at least
- 4:12Speaker 1: one nail problem, compared with 53% of those who had
- 4:16Speaker 1: not taken the drug. The study is the first controlled
- 4:19Speaker 1: study to examine GLP-1 and its potential effects on nail health.
- 4:24Speaker 1: It was a cross-sectional, meaning it examined participants at one
- 4:28Speaker 1: point in time and relied on symptoms participants reported rather
- 4:32Speaker 1: than observations. According to the researchers, weight loss alone did
- 4:38Speaker 1: not appear to explain differences in nails. After accounting for
- 4:42Speaker 1: skin conditions and nutritional deficiencies, Nail detachment and discoloration were
- 4:47Speaker 1: still about two to three times more common among GLP-1 users.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Study author Dr. Charles Taib of Necker University in Paris
- 4:57Speaker 1: cautioned against reading too much into the results. Some of
- 5:00Speaker 1: the associations weakened after those adjustments, he said, suggesting part
- 5:04Speaker 1: of what the study showed could be attributed to factors
- 5:07Speaker 1: other than GLP-1s. Not everything that happens during GLP-1 treatment
- 5:11Speaker 1: is necessarily caused by the treatment, he said. but the
- 5:14Speaker 1: association did not disappear. Our study cannot go further on
- 5:18Speaker 1: that without an explanation. Another caveat. About half the GLP-1
- 5:24Speaker 1: users said they had nail problems before they started the treatment.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Diabetes can affect a person's nails. Diabetes is linked to yellowed, thickening,
- 5:32Speaker 1: and misshapen nails, more fungal infections, buildup of debris, and
- 5:36Speaker 1: tiny spots of bleeding under the nails. These changes can
- 5:40Speaker 1: show up under magnification even when the nails look normal
- 5:43Speaker 1: to the naked eye. A companion study of the same
- 5:46Speaker 1: participants also presented at the conference found 50% of the
- 5:50Speaker 1: GLP-1 users, 34% of the non-users reported unusual hair loss.
- 5:56Speaker 1: The researchers said hair loss often occurred alongside scalp symptoms
- 6:00Speaker 1: in GLP-1 users, including itching, redness, or scaling, and suggested
- 6:04Speaker 1: that factors beyond weight loss could contribute to hair, scalp,
- 6:08Speaker 1: and nail changes. Scalp inflammation was the rule rather than
- 6:12Speaker 1: the exception with GLP-1 users. which clinicians do not currently
- 6:16Speaker 1: look for, which may be treatable. The findings should wear awareness,
- 6:20Speaker 1: not alarm, they said. These changes are frequent, usually benign,
- 6:25Speaker 1: and are not a reason to stop an effective treatment
- 6:27Speaker 1: on one's own. Anyone who notices hair shedding or itching
- 6:31Speaker 1: or red scalp or nail changes should mention that to
- 6:33Speaker 1: their doctor rather than discontinue therapy. If you notice changes
- 6:37Speaker 1: in your nails, such as swelling, drainage, pigment around the nail,
- 6:40Speaker 1: or experience some pain, bring it to your doctor's attention.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Telehealth patients, she said, need to be monitored by their
- 6:46Speaker 1: health care provider. You need to be examined, and they
- 6:49Speaker 1: need to see the changes in your body visibly. It
- 6:52Speaker 1: is a disservice to the patients to be prescribed medications
- 6:55Speaker 1: and renewals without a complete physical exam. Tabe and his
- 6:59Speaker 1: team plan to follow patients as they start taking GLP-1s
- 7:04Speaker 1: using standardized skin and nail exams and lab monitoring. Hope
- 7:07Speaker 1: to learn when the changes develop, why they occur, and
- 7:10Speaker 1: whether or not they can be reversed. The answer is yes,
- 7:16Speaker 1: they can. We can take a look at that. I'm
- 7:19Speaker 1: just throwing out one thing called NAD +. It can
- 7:22Speaker 1: do an amazing job of stabilizing most of those problems.
- 7:25Speaker 1: If you have issues like that, give us a call.
- 7:27Speaker 1: We'll help you set up a protocol, 727-916-4215. God bless you, folks.
