- 0:01Modern-day Western psychological researchers are finding that
- 0:05certain portions of the brain are related to higher cognitive
- 0:10functions, logic, reasoning, extrapolation imagination,
- 0:16projection analysis, and classification.
- 0:21While some parts are in charge of the purely mechanical control
- 0:25of things like bodily functions, some are repositories of memory
- 0:31and some are receptors of impulses, from the various
- 0:34senses. Some control motor functions,
- 0:37and other parts are involved in language capabilities, artistic
- 0:42ability, music ability, Etc, In other words, the brain may carry
- 0:49out multiple different functions in different areas.
- 0:53And yet, these are not all truly functions, which we would call
- 0:57mental The use of MRI and other measuring and testing tools
- 1:02available today. Allow scientists to see how
- 1:07various different segments of the brain, react to various
- 1:11types of stimuli or functionality.
- 1:15All of this is part of a new greater understanding that
- 1:19Western psychology is developing.
- 1:22It brings them to the type of knowledge already developed by
- 1:26yoga science Through the Ages and refined organized developed
- 1:32and codified by SRI aurobindo, as he explores yogic psychology.
- 1:40Dr. Dalal observes quote, there are three main parts in the
- 1:44outer or Surface being the mind, the mental, the life nature, the
- 1:50vital, and the body. The physical each part has its
- 1:55own, distinct type of Consciousness, though, in our
- 1:59ordinary awareness. We are unable to distinguish
- 2:02among the mental vital and physical constituents of our
- 2:06Consciousness and tend to regard all these These diverse elements
- 2:11simply as our mind. But in yoga psychology mind,
- 2:16refers specifically to the part of the being, which has to do
- 2:20with cognition, and intelligence with ideas with mental or
- 2:25thought, perceptions the reactions of thoughts to things
- 2:30with the truly mental movements, and formations, according to
- 2:33Sri, aurobindo The vital being or life nature is made up of
- 2:38desires, feelings, instincts, and impulses, the life energy.
- 2:44Which animates the body Prana is an aspect of the vital The body
- 2:50to has its own distinct Consciousness, which operates in
- 2:54the involuntary functionings of the various bodily organs and
- 2:58physiological systems body Consciousness is only part of
- 3:04the physical Consciousness. The latter includes also the
- 3:08physical mind and the physical vital, which will be presently
- 3:13explained. those separate and distinct, the three main
- 3:18divisions of the outer being just mentioned are
- 3:20interconnected and interact on one another giving rise to
- 3:25distinguishable subdivisions in the main parts of the being
- 3:30Thus, besides the thinking mind the Mind proper, there is a
- 3:34vital mind, which is the part of the mind that is intermixed with
- 3:38the vital, the vital mind. Unlike the thinking mind is not
- 3:44governed by reason, but is dominated by impulses and
- 3:48desires of the vital and seeks to justify and rationalize
- 3:52actions which are based on impulses and desires of the
- 3:56vital. Another subdivision is the
- 4:00physical mind, which is the part of the mind that is intermixed
- 4:04with the physical and partakes of the characteristics of the
- 4:08physical Consciousness, such as inertia obscurity, and
- 4:13mechanical repetitiveness, which manifest in the physical mind,
- 4:18as mental, torpor, and conservatism, doubt, and
- 4:22obsessive thoughts. The part of the mind, which is
- 4:25closest to the physical is, Is called The Mechanical Mind.
- 4:29Its characteristic is that of a machine that goes on turning
- 4:33round and round whenever thoughts occur in it.
- 4:37Another subdivision, which is important for self.
- 4:39Understanding, is the physical vital.
- 4:43It is the part of the vital, which is turned in tireli upon
- 4:46physical things, and is full of desires and speakings for
- 4:50pleasure on the physical plane. Closely connected with it is the
- 4:56vital physical, the part of the vital force, which constitutes
- 5:00the nervous being, it is the vehicle of the nervous responses
- 5:05and is related to the reactions desires and sensations of the
- 5:10body. End quote, reference SRI
