Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / 'The president is full of CRAP' Trump fumbles AGAIN, angers GOP and Dems by dismissing AI concerns
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The American people in large numbers are going one way
- 0:03Speaker 1: while Donald Trump is going the other. Case in point
- 0:05Speaker 1: on Capitol Hill today where Senator Bernie Sanders and far
- 0:08Speaker 1: right figure Steve Bannon, of all people, joined together and
- 0:13Speaker 1: participated in the same event. The Future of Life Institute's
- 0:17Speaker 1: pro-human assembly on the government's role in overseeing the development
- 0:21Speaker 1: of AI. A person close to Bernie Sanders made clear
- 0:24Speaker 1: to Politico's playbook that Bernie and Bannon appeared, quote, very separately,
- 0:29Speaker 1: but still it does give the world this image of.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Strange bedfellows up against Donald Trump, whose outright dismissal of
- 0:38Speaker 1: AI fears and concerns and regulations has spanned the better
- 0:42Speaker 1: part of the last 36 hours. On social media, he
- 0:45Speaker 1: called these fears a, quote, hoax before calling into a
- 0:48Speaker 1: summit in L.A. and saying this to the CEO of NVIDIA.
- 0:55Speaker 2: And I'm telling you, it's all a hoax. The data
- 0:57Speaker 2: centers are great and they make people wealthy and they
- 1:00Speaker 2: make states wealthy. And it's the oil of the next 20,
- 1:03Speaker 2: 25 years. It's bigger than the Internet and the AI,
- 1:07Speaker 2: you know, much more so. And they're just playing right
- 1:11Speaker 2: into the hands of a lot of people that don't
- 1:13Speaker 2: want to see it happen. And that could be political people.
- 1:16Speaker 2: It could also be China. And we're not going to
- 1:19Speaker 2: let that happen. It's a it's a hoax.
- 1:22Speaker 3: And you're right.
- 1:23Speaker 4: We're not going to let that happen, sir.
- 1:25Speaker 2: The robots will not be taken over. The A.I. will
- 1:28Speaker 2: not be taken over the rest of the world. The
- 1:30Speaker 2: whole thing is a hoax.
- 1:34Speaker 1: The whole thing is a hoax. OK, well, before you
- 1:38Speaker 1: take his word for it, remember, hoax is more than
- 1:41Speaker 1: a word to Donald Trump. It's usually a designation he
- 1:44Speaker 1: bestows on issues he finds particularly irksome. Watch.
- 1:50Speaker 5: So Obama's talking about all of this with the global
- 1:54Speaker 5: warming and that.
- 1:55Speaker 6: A lot of it's a hoax.
- 1:56Speaker 2: I call it the Russian hoax. One of the great hoaxes.
- 1:59Speaker 7: That was probably the thing that they did best, but
- 2:02Speaker 7: it is one great hoax. A brilliant jurist, a man
- 2:05Speaker 7: that did nothing wrong, a man that was caught up
- 2:08Speaker 7: in a hoax that was set up by the Democrats.
- 2:11Speaker 7: I think we had a tremendous week with the hoax,
- 2:13Speaker 7: you know, the great hoax. They call it the impeachment hoax.
- 2:17Speaker 6: Now the Democrats are politicizing the coronavirus. You know that, right? Coronavirus.
- 2:25Speaker 6: Think of it.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Think of it. And this is their new hoax.
- 2:29Speaker 6: There is nobody that feels more strongly about our soldiers,
- 2:33Speaker 6: our wounded warriors, our soldiers that died in war than
- 2:38Speaker 6: I do. It's a hoax.
- 2:41Speaker 5: With this unhinged insurrection hoax that we're all going through now,
- 2:45Speaker 5: with this insurrection hoax that they're doing, the insurrection hoax
- 2:49Speaker 5: the radical.
- 2:49Speaker 6: Democrats are putting forward Our.
- 2:52Speaker 5: Country into a two-tiered system of justice. Because the public
- 2:56Speaker 5: understands it's a hoax, it's a scam, it's a political
- 3:00Speaker 5: witch hunt.
- 3:01Speaker 6: I call it the Epstein hoax. Takes a lot of
- 3:03Speaker 6: time and effort. So this is a Democrat hoax that
- 3:07Speaker 6: never ends. Affordability is a hoax that was started by Democrats.
- 3:12Speaker 6: But they have a new word, you know, they always
- 3:14Speaker 6: have a hoax. The new word is affordability.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Accountability, Jeffrey Epstein, COVID. It was all a hoax. Did
- 3:24Speaker 1: you miss that? I want to bring into our coverage
- 3:26Speaker 1: Media Matters for America President Angelo Carasone. And joining me
- 3:29Speaker 1: at the table, Puck News Senior Political Columnist and National
- 3:32Speaker 1: Affairs Analyst John Heilman. Tom is still with us. Hoax is,
- 3:37Speaker 1: you know, what is it, a noun, a verb, and
- 3:39Speaker 1: a hoax if you're Donald Trump. But this is something
- 3:43Speaker 1: that I think the hoax smear, when he gets in early.
- 3:49Speaker 1: When he buys low, it can work with some portion
- 3:52Speaker 1: of his audience. But as we talked about earlier, as
- 3:54Speaker 1: we've been covering all week, the AI fears in the
- 3:57Speaker 1: data center, concerns and backlash, they are bipartisan and they
- 4:00Speaker 1: are widespread. Yeah.
- 4:02Speaker 4: And I mean, data centers are really just the tip
- 4:05Speaker 4: of the iceberg. I mean, Trump's obviously on the wrong
- 4:06Speaker 4: side of that issue. We see what the public opinion
- 4:09Speaker 4: is on that matter across the country. And that is
- 4:13Speaker 4: usually exactly the wrong in this cycle.
- 4:15Speaker 2: The opposite.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Like if Trump's really like telling us that you got
- 4:18Speaker 4: to be for something, you probably don't want to be
- 4:20Speaker 4: for that thing. But yes, it's bipartisan and Again, it
- 4:27Speaker 4: has the same quality of some of these other things.
- 4:32Speaker 4: When Trump says affordability is a hoax, the reason why
- 4:34Speaker 4: it doesn't work is because it's not just where you're
- 4:37Speaker 4: early or late. It's that we have tangible affordability. evidence
- 4:40Speaker 4: when we go to the gas station and fill up
- 4:42Speaker 4: our car, when we go to the grocery store and
- 4:44Speaker 4: buy our eggs and meat. It's like, what are you
- 4:47Speaker 4: talking about? We're long past the day where people are
- 4:51Speaker 4: willing to give Trump the, I'm not going to, who
- 4:54Speaker 4: am I going to believe, Donald Trump and my lion eyes.
- 4:55Speaker 4: People are like, the president's full of crap about this.
- 4:58Speaker 4: And the reality of the AI thing is that people,
- 5:02Speaker 4: even though it's abstract and you're hearing these kind of
- 5:08Speaker 4: apocalyptic scenarios that are being offered by many of these
- 5:11Speaker 4: people in the industry. The reality is that more and
- 5:13Speaker 4: more every day people are using AI. And something that's
- 5:19Speaker 4: as pervasive as AI is, even though we only have
- 5:23Speaker 4: a very dim understanding of it through our chatbots of
- 5:26Speaker 4: what the potential upside and downside risks of AI are,
- 5:29Speaker 4: it still is a thing that is becoming increasingly part
- 5:32Speaker 4: of everybody's life. And when you try to convince people
- 5:35Speaker 4: that things are part of their life, that you're trying
- 5:39Speaker 4: to sell them something that's just starkly in contrast to
- 5:43Speaker 4: what their experience is, that just never works.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I mean, Angelo, this is something, you know, you've talked
- 5:49Speaker 1: about in terms of narrative dominance. When you have it,
- 5:53Speaker 1: you have a better shot of being able to call
- 5:55Speaker 1: something a hoax, especially if people, as John's saying, don't
- 5:57Speaker 1: have evidence that contradicts it in front of their eyes.
- 6:00Speaker 1: When you no longer have it or you're losing control
- 6:02Speaker 1: of it, and his numbers, we should say, have dropped
- 6:04Speaker 1: like a stone since this issue has sort of burst
- 6:07Speaker 1: into public consciousness. So fewer and fewer people believe him anyway.
- 6:11Speaker 1: And to me, the concerns about AI are bipartisan, as
- 6:16Speaker 1: evidenced by Steve Bannon showing up next to Bernie Sanders.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Yeah, and so there's a lot of things colliding here
- 6:23Speaker 3: at the same time. And one is, it is a
- 6:27Speaker 3: reflection of the fact that they've lost complete narrative dominance,
- 6:30Speaker 3: narrative control. And the illustration of that is in the
- 6:33Speaker 3: video montage that you played. The idea of calling something
- 6:36Speaker 3: a hoax actually had resonance power with the audience because
- 6:40Speaker 3: what it gave them is a framework for understanding, oh,
- 6:42Speaker 3: this thing, yes, I'm opposed to that. I don't need
- 6:45Speaker 3: to know any details. I don't need to have any information.
- 6:48Speaker 3: It is being branded as a hoax. And as a
- 6:50Speaker 3: consequence of it being a hoax, that means that I'm
- 6:53Speaker 3: anti that. It means it's bad. Somebody else is trying
- 6:56Speaker 3: to get a one up on me. China, the Democrats,
- 6:58Speaker 3: whatever that is, the media, they're perpetuating this hoax.
- 7:02Speaker 2: I'm anti that.
- 7:03Speaker 3: That's the power of the frame. And that's what he
- 7:05Speaker 3: had leading into this. Calling it a hoax now actually
- 7:08Speaker 3: doesn't resonate. It doesn't connect. As you note, there's bipartisan
- 7:11Speaker 3: opposition here and you can see the fractures. You can
- 7:14Speaker 3: see it happening in real time in the right wing
- 7:16Speaker 3: media and the larger media ecosystem. There's a segment that
- 7:20Speaker 3: reflexively took his framework. It's a hoax and let's run
- 7:23Speaker 3: with it. Fox News, Megyn Kelly, Ben Shapiro, hoax. We're
- 7:28Speaker 3: going to go with the hoax line. And then there
- 7:30Speaker 3: is another segment, the Steve Bannon's of the world, the
- 7:33Speaker 3: Tim Dillon's, the broadcast that are not there. And one
- 7:36Speaker 3: of them. And that's those, by the way, are the
- 7:37Speaker 3: same fault lines that we saw with Iran, with affordability
- 7:41Speaker 3: or cost of living.
- 7:42Speaker 2: All those.
- 7:42Speaker 3: It's the same exact fault line all over again. People
- 7:46Speaker 3: that are responsive to their audience. They're not going along
- 7:49Speaker 3: with Trump on this because their audience, as you note,
- 7:52Speaker 3: is afraid of the implications of AI.
- 7:55Speaker 8: Hey, it's me, Rachel Maddow. If you like the story
