- 0:00SPEAKER_00: I often have people complain,
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: tell me,
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: observe that they have family members who are not practicing the faith and
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: that that's difficult for them,
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: that's disturbing for them, that's hard to accept or understand.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: And I think the question that we have to ask ourselves is not really
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: about our family members' practice of the faith, but it's about our own.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: not whether so-and-so is a Catholic,
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: is a Christian, whatever, but really, what does the faith mean to me?
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Am I a Christian?
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Am I truly practicing the faith?
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Because that's really the best thing that we can do for other people.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: If we hope for other people to grow in their practice of the faith,
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: the best thing that we can do is to practice the faith fully ourselves.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: And maybe not so much for you,
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: because here you are at Daily Mass,
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: but for many Catholics,
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: the practice of the faith is something that you do for an hour on Sunday.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: And the rest of the week, you go about your day.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: And I'm a good Catholic.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: I don't hurt anybody.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: I try to be honest.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: I go to church.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: I pay my time.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: But what more is necessary?
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: What more could I do?
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: I'm doing all the things.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: And what Christ is observing in this gospel is that there is much more that we could be doing.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: That the practice of the faith demands our entire life, our entire dedication.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: It needs to touch every moment of our existence.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Because in this gospel we have these different people and their problem is
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: that they are distracted with other things.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: They're not bad people.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: But they're focused on other things.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: And that can happen so easily to us that other things come into our hearts
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: and crowd out the presence of God.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: And the practice of the presence of God should be the most important thing in our lives.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: More important than money.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: More important than our houses.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: More important than our country.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: More important than politics.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: More important than any of those other things.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: It should be the thing that I think about all the time that every day I'm working on.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Every moment I have a chance.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Offering everything that I do up, making every moment of my life into a part of that.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: That is what the practice of the faith looks like.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: And that's something that we all need to do more.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: And if we do that,
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: I guarantee you that God will use you to touch the lives of those
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: who have not encountered God in the same way.
