- 0:12Hello friends. Sean here.
- 0:14It's Wednesday. It's the middle of the week,
- 0:16it's the 7th of February and you have invited me in so that you
- 0:21and I can read another chapter of God's Word today.
- 0:25And just in case we didn't quite get the full picture that David
- 0:30could have killed Saul but chose not to, well, it happens today
- 0:35again. Yes, the author is really going
- 0:37to great lengths to make this point that the throne was given
- 0:41to David by God, not something that he took before the time was
- 0:46right. So we continue to see what are
- 0:50the important attributes that God would have us know that he
- 0:54values in his people and in his kingship.
- 0:58And yes, this will all become solidified as he creates his
- 1:02covenant with David, which will be the climax of this entire
- 1:05book. But that comes in the second
- 1:07half of the book, in Second Samuel.
- 1:09So we're a bit away from that happening.
- 1:11Yes, we have still got some ways to travel before then, but we'll
- 1:16get there in good time, friends. So let us read together today's
- 1:20reading. First Samuel, Chapter 26.
- 1:32Now some men from Zif came to Saul at Gibier to tell him David
- 1:37is hiding on the hill of her killer which overlooks Jessiman.
- 1:42So Saul took 3000 of Israel's elite troops and went to hunt
- 1:46him down in the wilderness of Ziff.
- 1:49Saul came along the road beside the hill of Hakkila, near
- 1:53Jessmon, where David was hiding. When David learned that Saul had
- 1:57come after him into the wilderness, he sent out spies to
- 2:01verify the report of Saul's arrival.
- 2:03David slipped over to Saul's camp one night to look around.
- 2:07Saul and Abner, son of near the commander of his army, was
- 2:12sleeping inside a ring formed by the slumbering warriors.
- 2:16Who will volunteer to go in there with me?
- 2:18David asked Amalek, the Hittite and Abishai, son of Jeremiah,
- 2:23Joe's brother. I'll go with you, Abishi
- 2:27replied. So David and Abishai went right
- 2:31into Saul's camp and found him asleep with his spear stuck in
- 2:35the ground beside his head. Abner and the soldiers were
- 2:39lying asleep around him. God has surely handed your enemy
- 2:43over to you at this time, Abshire whispered to David.
- 2:47Let me pin him to the ground with one thrust of the spear.
- 2:51I won't need to strike twice. No, David said.
- 2:55Don't kill him, For who can remain innocent after attacking
- 3:00the Lord's anointed? 1 Surely the Lord will strike so
- 3:03all down someday, or he will die of old age or in battle.
- 3:08The Lord forbid that I should kill the one he has anointed,
- 3:12but take his spear and that jug of water beside his head and
- 3:16then let's get out of here. Sir David took the spear and jug
- 3:21of water that lay near Salem's head.
- 3:24Then he and Abshire got away without anyone seeing them or
- 3:28even waking up because the Lord had put Saul's men into a deep
- 3:32sleep. David climbed the hill opposite
- 3:35the camp until he was at a safe distance.
- 3:38Then he shouted down to the soldiers and to Abner, son of
- 3:42Nair. Wake up, Abner.
- 3:45Who is it? Abna demanded.
- 3:47Well, Abna, you're a great man, aren't you?
- 3:50David taunted. Where in all Israel is there
- 3:54anyone as mighty? So why haven't you guarded your
- 3:57master, the king, when someone came to kill him?
- 4:01This isn't good at all. I swear by the Lord that you and
- 4:05your men deserve to die because you failed to protect your
- 4:08master, The Lords anointed. Look around.
- 4:12Where is the King's spear and the jug of water that were
- 4:15beside his head? Soul recognised David's voice
- 4:19and called out. Is that you, my son David And
- 4:24David replied. Yes, my Lord the king.
- 4:27Why are you chasing me? What have I done?
- 4:31What is my crime? But now let my Lord the king
- 4:35listen to his servant. If the Lord has stirred you up
- 4:38against me, then let him accept my offering.
- 4:42But if this is simply a human scheme, then may those involve
- 4:46be cursed by the Lord. For they have driven me from my
- 4:49home, so I can no longer live amongst the Lord's people.
- 4:53And they have said, go worship Pagan gods.
- 4:57Must I die on foreign soil, far from the presence of the Lord?
- 5:02Why has the king of Israel come out to search for a single flea?
- 5:06Why does he hunt me down like a Partridge on the mountains?
- 5:10Then Saul confessed. They have sinned.
- 5:14Come back home, my son, and I will no longer try to harm you,
- 5:18for you valued my life. Today I have been a fool and
- 5:23very, very wrong. Here is your spear, O King,
- 5:27David replied. Let one of your young men come
- 5:30over and get it. The Lord gives his own reward
- 5:34for doing good and for being loyal.
- 5:37And I refuse to kill you even when the Lord placed you in my
- 5:40power, for you are the Lord's anointed one.
- 5:44Now may the Lord value my life, even as I have valued yours
- 5:48today. May he rescue me from all my
- 5:51troubles. And Saul said to David,
- 5:54Blessings on you, my son. David, you will do many heroic
- 5:59deeds, and you will surely succeed.
- 6:02Then David went away and Saul returned home.
- 6:16Lord, in your word today you point out the difference between
- 6:20human schemes and your schemes. And there are no shortages of
- 6:26human schemes. All the ideas that people have
- 6:30that we want to pursue, many of them for our own benefit or for
- 6:35the benefit of those we love most.
- 6:39But we love with selfish, sinful hearts.
- 6:41Lord, not with your perfect heart.
- 6:45You love those who are destitute.
- 6:47You love those who are unlovable that we find so hard to love.
- 6:54Lord, may your love continue to shape our hearts.
- 6:59May your love soften us and fill up our hearts so that we, with
- 7:04hearts overflowing with love, would be able to give love to
- 7:08those who are indeed hardest to love, so that this world would
- 7:13have a taste of your priorities. Well, we love.
- 7:18Not because people deserve love. We love because you are a God of
- 7:24love, and your way is love and we are your people.
- 7:29Lord, fill us with your love. May this be a world of love in
- 7:35all the corners that lack it. And we thank you for loving us
- 7:41first. And we pray all of this in the
- 7:43loving name of Jesus. Amen.
