Latest / Cardinal Territory: A St. Louis Cardinals Podcast / Final home series of 2025: What have we learned about the Cardinals?
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: A special final Friday home edition of Cardinal Territory. Katie Woo,
- 0:13Speaker 1: Bertie got back with you for the last home series
- 0:17Speaker 1: of the twenty twenty five regular season.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Bertie, can you believe we're here?
- 0:23Speaker 3: You know, I've been fortunate, Katie, because seriously, I know
- 0:30Speaker 3: the last three years have been rough for the Cardinals,
- 0:32Speaker 3: but you know, I've had the best seat in the
- 0:35Speaker 3: house for you know, this is incredible and incredible air
- 0:38Speaker 3: of Cardinals baseball, and you know this will be I
- 0:41Speaker 3: think the only the second losing season since Mozilla.
- 0:45Speaker 4: Took over as the head of baseball operations.
- 0:48Speaker 3: But I don't know what it's like for all these cities,
- 0:52Speaker 3: you know, and they're fans and even media that you know,
- 0:54Speaker 3: just have to deal with like losing teams all the time.
- 0:56Speaker 4: And my point of saying.
- 0:57Speaker 3: That is that, yeah, there was sometimes this season you're
- 1:01Speaker 3: like kind of like Peu, but it actually the season
- 1:05Speaker 3: actually went by really fast, and I think that a
- 1:08Speaker 3: lot of it had to do with there was a
- 1:11Speaker 3: lot the first couple of months, but I thought it
- 1:14Speaker 3: was a very interesting team, not so much with performance
- 1:17Speaker 3: but with all the stuff scorreling.
- 1:19Speaker 4: But by fast, I agree.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I think that's the best wing to sum it up.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Having up on the athletic today about kind of the
- 1:28Speaker 1: transition season, whether or not it was a success or not,
- 1:30Speaker 1: and I think it was a success in terms of
- 1:32Speaker 1: they did have questions answered.
- 1:34Speaker 2: They wanted to know if this core is.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Currently constructed, was good enough to expedite a rebuild, and.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I found out that it's not, so we're going to
- 1:42Speaker 2: embrace the.
- 1:43Speaker 1: True rebuild in Saint Louis, And that to me makes
- 1:47Speaker 1: this series a little sentimental because I remember in twenty
- 1:50Speaker 1: twenty two, I've covered three, just three postseason games in
- 1:53Speaker 1: my five year tenure in Saint Louis, zero wins, so
- 1:56Speaker 1: great track record for me, but I remember my.
- 1:58Speaker 2: First home playoff win in twenty twenty two.
- 2:02Speaker 5: Albert's back, Yattie's last year. You've got MVP, Gould.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Schmith, potential MVP R and auto Ben Frederickson formally of
- 2:08Speaker 1: the same post as Patch, you and I both know
- 2:10Speaker 1: came up before the game.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Hey take it in because so.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Many writers and reporters do not get to experience something
- 2:18Speaker 1: like this, and he was referring to the energy from
- 2:21Speaker 1: the crowd, the excitement of a legitimate postseason team so
- 2:24Speaker 1: we thought, uh beat at.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Their home crowd in Saint Louis, and.
- 2:29Speaker 1: I thought to myself, October baseball for freaking Rocks. I
- 2:32Speaker 1: can't wait to experience this over and over again. Turns
- 2:35Speaker 1: out Benfred very wise exactly he was talking about, because
- 2:39Speaker 1: I get to experience that since that conversation. And that's
- 2:43Speaker 1: what makes September baseball a little sentimental to me, because
- 2:46Speaker 1: are thankful to have this job, and there are different
- 2:50Speaker 1: perks and different benefits to take away from covering an
- 2:53Speaker 1: organization in a down spiral such as Saint Louis right now.
- 2:57Speaker 1: But I have thought that September baseball would.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Mean gearing up for a postseason run.
- 3:04Speaker 1: And you're gearing up for October and we're all in
- 3:06Speaker 1: it together, and there's nothing like the postseason and covering
- 3:10Speaker 1: that and being meant an early exit from contention. It's
- 3:13Speaker 1: meant elimination, It's meant a lot of questions about the future.
- 3:16Speaker 1: It's meant people losing their jobs, players losing places on
- 3:19Speaker 1: the roster. And that makes me sentimental because I go
- 3:23Speaker 1: when I look at all my fantastic colleagues work at
- 3:25Speaker 1: the athletic and.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Across the board, I'm checked in.
- 3:28Speaker 1: On the Astros and the Matners, and I'm checking in
- 3:31Speaker 1: on what the Blue Jays are doing. All of a sudden,
- 3:33Speaker 1: the Guardians are relevant again. What the heck is going
- 3:35Speaker 1: on in the NL West with the Dodgers and the
- 3:36Speaker 1: Padres and the Giants are flaming out? But at least
- 3:39Speaker 1: September was was fun right right, And that's what makes
- 3:42Speaker 1: this sentimental for me, because it's the end of another
- 3:46Speaker 1: season eighty one game that's seen some of my favorite
- 3:48Speaker 1: people at the ball park every day.
- 3:51Speaker 2: I will get soft on you guys. It's not why
- 3:53Speaker 2: we're here, but I.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Do feel some sort of emotions because September baseball was
- 3:57Speaker 1: never supposed.
- 3:57Speaker 4: To be like well night, and I helped R. Kummel up.
- 4:01Speaker 3: I was a football NFL writer, but that's where I
- 4:04Speaker 3: was hired. But I before football, the football cycles start,
- 4:09Speaker 3: and so I came in a great time because I
- 4:12Speaker 3: got to see that, you know, the eighty five team,
- 4:15Speaker 3: the eighty seven team, write some stuff about them so exciting.
- 4:18Speaker 3: You know, that Bush State and the old Bush State
- 4:20Speaker 3: name was unbelievable. And I wasn't even here for the
- 4:23Speaker 3: eighty two World Series yet, but you know, and then
- 4:26Speaker 3: there was this law, the long slog. You know, from
- 4:29Speaker 3: eighty eighty eight through ninety five they didn't make the
- 4:32Speaker 3: playoffs and it was awful.
- 4:35Speaker 4: And then when built the Wood bought the team.
- 4:37Speaker 3: And then you know, also Jack Getty and Russa and
- 4:41Speaker 3: Moe came Mo joined the Cardinals in nineteen ninety five.
- 4:45Speaker 4: I tell you what that when the.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Cardinals made total Lruss's first made the first team sorry
- 4:51Speaker 3: and Saint Louis nineteen ninety six, got all the way
- 4:53Speaker 3: into Game seven of the NLCS.
- 4:56Speaker 4: It was just such a ride. It was so much fun,
- 5:00Speaker 4: so much from.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Two thousand through twenty fifteen, just like postseason, postseason, postseason, postseason.
- 5:08Speaker 3: I mean, they were the best team in baseball basically
- 5:10Speaker 3: for sixteen years, which doesn't mean they won the most
- 5:13Speaker 3: World Series, but I'm just saying year in, year out,
- 5:16Speaker 3: and i mean, oh my gosh, I just see when
- 5:20Speaker 3: you were talking about just getting that feeling just for
- 5:23Speaker 3: that one time in twenty point two at home. You know,
- 5:27Speaker 3: I just like I was thinking, yeah, man, I was
- 5:30Speaker 3: blessed because I love baseball, and I just was, you know,
- 5:34Speaker 3: covering all those games for like sixteen consecutive years plus
- 5:39Speaker 3: ninety six, you know, all of those postseason games. And
- 5:43Speaker 3: I was writing something today and it brought me back
- 5:48Speaker 3: to memories of that Game six of the World Series
- 5:50Speaker 3: in twenty eleven. And I've been very fortunate to have
- 5:53Speaker 3: seen some extraordinary things just locally. I mean, the nineteen
- 5:56Speaker 3: ninety nine Rams, things like that, the Blues winning the
- 5:59Speaker 3: Stanley Cup. I'd have to say, if someone asked me,
- 6:02Speaker 3: Game six of that World Series was the greatest sporting
- 6:05Speaker 3: event that I've watched, and certainly the greatest baseball game
- 6:09Speaker 3: I've ever watched in terms of being there, you know.
- 6:12Speaker 3: And so sometimes I squawk, like everybody squawks. Writers squawk,
- 6:17Speaker 3: that's what we do. But man, what a treasure trove,
- 6:23Speaker 3: I mean, a huge treasure of all these great memories.
- 6:26Speaker 4: So I feel you what you were saying.
- 6:28Speaker 3: And that's why when they come out of this rebuild,
- 6:31Speaker 3: I am very confident they're going to be in a
- 6:33Speaker 3: really good place.
- 6:34Speaker 4: And you know, so I hope you stay long enough.
- 6:37Speaker 4: Is your a star?
- 6:39Speaker 2: No? In my own mind, maybe, so yeah.
- 6:42Speaker 3: You better stay because you know, you deserve to. You
- 6:47Speaker 3: deserve to go through that stuff because it's fun. It's work,
- 6:49Speaker 3: but it's fun, it's exhilarating. See people think we don't
- 6:52Speaker 3: care about that stuff.
- 6:53Speaker 4: No, gosh, it's a thrill.
- 6:55Speaker 3: It's like I got into this whole mess, this racket
- 6:59Speaker 3: for big event. I wanted to see greatness. I wanted
- 7:01Speaker 3: to write about greatness. I wanted a big big events,
- 7:04Speaker 3: big players, big stars, big moments. So that that's one
- 7:10Speaker 3: of the things that just keeps me going. I don't
- 7:12Speaker 3: mean it going so long. I'll be brief after this,
- 7:14Speaker 3: but see, you got me started on this.
- 7:16Speaker 5: I said we were going to be sentimental, and now
- 7:18Speaker 5: here we are so emotional.
- 7:19Speaker 4: No, it's there's nothing like it, you know.
- 7:22Speaker 3: And we had just this ridiculously prosperous era of baseball
- 7:27Speaker 3: in Saint Louis, which is one of the reasons why
- 7:30Speaker 3: and people get mad at me, and I'm not I'm
- 7:33Speaker 3: not belittling anyone, but it's kind of like, you know,
- 7:36Speaker 3: when I say we, I'm talking about the media me,
- 7:41Speaker 3: we're talking about the fans too. We have had just
- 7:43Speaker 3: this extraordinary period of winning baseball and the last three years, yeah,
- 7:49Speaker 3: last three years, and okay, is it hell on Earth? No,
- 7:53Speaker 3: not even close, because the predominant part of the time
- 7:57Speaker 3: the Cardinals were excellent, and okay, they've been a conquer
- 8:00Speaker 3: for three straight years. I've seen worse things in sports,
- 8:04Speaker 3: and I'm speaking from my own perspective.
- 8:06Speaker 4: It's not that bad. I understand frustration, but it ain't
- 8:10Speaker 4: that bad.
- 8:11Speaker 2: It's not it.
- 8:13Speaker 1: At least we know going forward, and we'll have a
- 8:15Speaker 1: lot more clarity about this at the end of the
- 8:17Speaker 1: regular season what the plan will be.
- 8:19Speaker 5: And I think that's just what the fan base needs
- 8:20Speaker 5: to hear.
- 8:22Speaker 2: People in Saint Louis.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Saint Louis Cardinals fans have such a strong knowledge and
- 8:26Speaker 1: passion for baseball and they're so smart.
- 8:29Speaker 2: So as long as.
- 8:30Speaker 1: They have an idea of what to expect and they
- 8:32Speaker 1: feel like that's being communicated to them clearly and without
- 8:35Speaker 1: the BS, I think the city will rally around it.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Do I think they're going to sell out with stadium
- 8:39Speaker 1: every day in twenty twenty six, No, I do not
- 8:41Speaker 1: think that are is This organization is going to have
- 8:42Speaker 1: to earn some trust back. Yes, But as this twenty
- 8:45Speaker 1: twenty five season comes to a close, I'm a little
- 8:49Speaker 1: excited for rebuild because a new era of Cardinals baseball
- 8:53Speaker 1: is about to begin and that is really exciting.
- 8:56Speaker 3: So yeah, and I agree with you with him Bloom
- 8:59Speaker 3: And someone asked me. Someone from the Cardinals asked me.
- 9:01Speaker 3: He said, like, if you could tell heim Blum anything,
- 9:03Speaker 3: what would you tell him as far as like introducing himself?
- 9:06Speaker 3: And I said, look, you know he won't want to
- 9:08Speaker 3: take shots at MO, but the way, the one thing
- 9:11Speaker 3: I would tell him.
- 9:12Speaker 4: Is this, this is our plan.
- 9:16Speaker 3: It may be a lot different than what we're all
- 9:18Speaker 3: used to with the Saint Louis Cardinals, but it's something
- 9:21Speaker 3: we really really feel we have to do. Then putting
- 9:24Speaker 3: it off, but it's time, and I promise you that
- 9:28Speaker 3: we will be better when we get through it. We
- 9:30Speaker 3: will be really good and really exciting and ready to
- 9:34Speaker 3: win again. But the one thing I won't do is
- 9:38Speaker 3: try to mislead you. I will always tell you the
- 9:40Speaker 3: truth and it will be transparent. And the person said, okay,
- 9:45Speaker 3: why do you think that that would be good? So
- 9:47Speaker 3: because and the person didn't disagree with me, but he said,
- 9:49Speaker 3: why do you think that would be good? I said,
- 9:52Speaker 3: because these people are just so tired of me and
- 9:53Speaker 3: basically lied to or misled or hustled or you know,
- 9:57Speaker 3: trying to do well well there, Well, we're no, we
- 10:00Speaker 3: think we can contend.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Oh, we think we can get, you know, and well,
- 10:03Speaker 4: we're not. We're not rebuilding. We'll never rebuild all this stuff.
- 10:07Speaker 3: And I was telling them, telling this person, I said, listen,
- 10:09Speaker 3: they the Cardinals fans who are great.
- 10:11Speaker 4: They may not like what they hear from heim Bloomer initially.
- 10:15Speaker 4: They may not like it. They may not have a
- 10:17Speaker 4: party who wants to hear rebuild.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Right.
- 10:20Speaker 3: But I can picture my mind some old guy like me,
- 10:23Speaker 3: maybe you know, saying like, well, I don't like this plan,
- 10:26Speaker 3: but I tell you what, I get this guy credit
- 10:29Speaker 3: for telling me the truth about it. At least I
- 10:31Speaker 3: can trust him. He's not trying, he's not you're not
- 10:33Speaker 3: trying to hustle me. At least this guy tells the truth.
- 10:36Speaker 3: So and I think that that alone will be a
- 10:39Speaker 3: huge thing forward for the Cardinals because the messaging will
- 10:44Speaker 3: change dramatically and the transparency will really improve.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Anyway, agreed, And here, let's let's go right into our
- 10:51Speaker 1: DraftKings player to watch segment, because this is onevolved two players,
- 10:55Speaker 1: one that we can't watch anymore because it's the injured list.
- 10:58Speaker 1: But this will require us being transparent about the future
- 11:01Speaker 1: careers of both of these players. So let's get right
- 11:03Speaker 1: into it, all right, our draft Kings players spotlight In
- 11:12Speaker 1: case you missed, it's not really news anymore, but we'll
- 11:15Speaker 1: reference it anyway. Wilson Contreras has a season any biceps
- 11:19Speaker 1: strain who was placed on the interur list on Wednesday,
- 11:21Speaker 1: effectively ending his season. When you're looking at what Wilson
- 11:25Speaker 1: Contreras did this season first year as a full time
- 11:28Speaker 1: first baseman, he hit twenty homer's career high ADRBI and
- 11:31Speaker 1: played a very serviceable first base, you look across the
- 11:35Speaker 1: diamond to his cornerstone counterpart, Nolan Ronado continues to play.
- 11:40Speaker 5: I mean, how refreshing is it to see Nolan.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Arronado as third base again? That defense?
- 11:45Speaker 1: It's after watching it for five years. Nolan and I
- 11:48Speaker 1: got here in the same season in twenty twenty one.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I just got so spoiled as to the most difficult
- 11:53Speaker 1: plays looking routine and unfairly. When I was watching Nolan,
- 11:57Speaker 1: Gorman was like, those plays need to be made, Okay,
- 11:59Speaker 1: no they Nolan Arnatto makes every impossible play look easy.
- 12:03Speaker 1: So I've enjoyed watching him return.
- 12:05Speaker 2: I know it's been in a season he wanted.
- 12:08Speaker 1: In twenty twenty five from a performance standpoint, especially offensively.
- 12:11Speaker 1: But when you look at those two players and where
- 12:13Speaker 1: they are at and their careers, two very distinguished veterans,
- 12:17Speaker 1: both under contract for two more years, both with full
- 12:20Speaker 1: no trade causes, the Cardinals are gonna have to have
- 12:23Speaker 1: very honest conversations. And I'm only talking a little bit
- 12:26Speaker 1: about the front office. I'm also talking to ownership here
- 12:29Speaker 1: about the careers of Contreras and Arnado, and if that,
- 12:33Speaker 1: you know, if you're going to go to a rebuild
- 12:35Speaker 1: and focus on the youth, do either of them have
- 12:38Speaker 1: a place in the organization.
- 12:39Speaker 2: We know are for Ronado. I mean, they've been trying
- 12:40Speaker 2: to move him for a year.
- 12:42Speaker 1: They're gonna have to try a lot harder to move
- 12:43Speaker 1: him after his performance this year. Wilson Contreras has been
- 12:47Speaker 1: very adamant that he does not want to waive his
- 12:48Speaker 1: no trade cause. But with the Cardinals expected to announce
- 12:51Speaker 1: an official rebuild very soon, does that change Contra's timeline.
- 12:54Speaker 1: I'm sure he wants to win again, That's why he
- 12:56Speaker 1: signed to come here.
- 12:57Speaker 2: In Saint Louis.
- 12:58Speaker 1: So my question for you, Bernie, for our Draft Kings
- 13:01Speaker 1: player spotlight is and we'll throw Sunny Gray in there too.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Why not between Wilson, Conturists, Sunny, Gray, Nolan Arnado, who's
- 13:09Speaker 1: most likely to get traded? And do you think that
- 13:11Speaker 1: there is a chance for all three don't return to
- 13:14Speaker 1: Saint Louis next year?
- 13:15Speaker 4: That's interesting. I never thought about that. I guess it's possible.
- 13:20Speaker 4: I still think that.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Well, first of all, there's there's obstacles. You know, will
- 13:24Speaker 3: Gray be willing to waive his no trade? Maybe maybe selectively?
- 13:30Speaker 3: So it's got to be a place he really wants
- 13:32Speaker 3: to be, So that's number one. Contreras. I think he's
- 13:34Speaker 3: very happy to be with the Cardinals. I think he's
- 13:37Speaker 3: proud to be with the Cardinals. I think he he
- 13:40Speaker 3: wants to be a guy that's known is that.
- 13:43Speaker 4: No, I don't. I don't want to cut and run
- 13:45Speaker 4: when things get bad. I'm here. I want to help
- 13:47Speaker 4: the Cardinals turn this around. I think he's very genuine.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Arnattos is a matter of, frankly, whether a whether there's
- 13:53Speaker 3: going to be enough interest in him that would lead
- 13:56Speaker 3: to a trade and be whether he would approve and
- 13:58Speaker 3: see what the cardinal how much are they willing to
- 14:01Speaker 3: chip in to make the trade happen Financially so I
- 14:04Speaker 3: don't know.
- 14:05Speaker 4: I mean, that's a tough question. I think Grace still
- 14:11Speaker 4: probably would have the most value.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Even though he's he's really been up and down, very
- 14:16Speaker 3: inconsistent this year. He's still got good stuff and teams
- 14:21Speaker 3: need starting pitching right, so I would I would say
- 14:24Speaker 3: he'd be the most likely to go, but he still
- 14:26Speaker 3: has the final word on it. That's what's you know,
- 14:28Speaker 3: It's never we talked about this last week. It's always
- 14:31Speaker 3: complicated with the Cardinals, you know. The one thing about
- 14:34Speaker 3: and Iron out of We've been through that many many times.
- 14:36Speaker 3: So one thing I'll say about, you know, Conterrero's he's
- 14:38Speaker 3: still a really good player. You know, the Cardinals improved
- 14:44Speaker 3: both offensively and defensively at first base this season. I
- 14:47Speaker 3: mean his like his defensive metrics are better than Paul Goldschmidt.
- 14:52Speaker 4: Schmid's were last year. And Contrera's offense.
- 14:55Speaker 3: I looked this up yesterday, like if he used way
- 14:58Speaker 3: to Runs creative plus fancy pants stat it's same as
- 15:01Speaker 3: ops plus.
- 15:02Speaker 4: I think it's a little better. Contrasts is tied with
- 15:05Speaker 4: Bryce Harper in terms of you know, way to runs
- 15:08Speaker 4: creative plus this year among first basemen. I mean Wilson.
- 15:12Speaker 3: Con Terras's is like a top eight first basement in
- 15:14Speaker 3: the majors offensively, and he's a plus defender. I think
- 15:18Speaker 3: he was tied for fourth and outs above average, so
- 15:21Speaker 3: they so he is still like really really good and
- 15:24Speaker 3: really for what they're paying him, he's on the pace
- 15:28Speaker 3: at the end of this contract, he's on pace. If
- 15:31Speaker 3: you look at the Fangrass value, he's on pace to
- 15:34Speaker 3: be the five year deal will have been worth you know,
- 15:40Speaker 3: about one hundred and ten hundred and twelve hundred and
- 15:42Speaker 3: fifteen million dollars and that's like an eighty seven point
- 15:45Speaker 3: five million dollar investment.
- 15:46Speaker 4: So the question is, I mean I see, in fact
- 15:48Speaker 4: I see it.
- 15:49Speaker 3: When you ever write about Conterra's I always go for
- 15:52Speaker 3: the fun because there's so many people in a comment
- 15:55Speaker 3: section just oh.
- 15:55Speaker 4: They got to get rid of him, they got to
- 15:56Speaker 4: get Why would they have to get rid of him?
- 15:58Speaker 3: I don't understand, and you know, and and I answered
- 16:01Speaker 3: some emails at Stlcentral dot com about this, and I
- 16:06Speaker 3: just say, you know, there's so many false premise criticisms
- 16:09Speaker 3: of him, and it bugs me because if you're going
- 16:12Speaker 3: to say they got to get him out of here,
- 16:13Speaker 3: you got to know your facts, right. One of the
- 16:15Speaker 3: things I heard is like, well, he's not in the
- 16:16Speaker 3: middle of the lineup hitter. Well, first of all, even
- 16:20Speaker 3: if that was true, it's not his fault. That's more
- 16:22Speaker 3: of a reflection on the team that they built. But
- 16:26Speaker 3: the other thing, his numbers batting three, four and five
- 16:29Speaker 3: or five as a cardinal three four five.
- 16:30Speaker 4: Really really, really, really good.
- 16:32Speaker 3: And the other thing is that I hear, well, you know,
- 16:35Speaker 3: he gets hurt a lot, and look, he's banged up
- 16:37Speaker 3: against this year, played his most have played appearances in
- 16:43Speaker 3: this season since his like age twenty sixth season. He
- 16:47Speaker 3: played more this year and he has a long time.
- 16:49Speaker 3: So that's a false premise. That was one of the
- 16:51Speaker 3: reasons to move them to first base. The other thing
- 16:53Speaker 3: is all he doesn't hit in the clutch, false premise.
- 16:55Speaker 3: His numbers and his numbers in highlight average, his numbers
- 16:58Speaker 3: and runners score is very very good.
- 17:01Speaker 4: I'm not I'm really.
- 17:03Speaker 3: I am going to loss to explain like how some
- 17:06Speaker 3: people think he is a problem and he's got They
- 17:08Speaker 3: got to go, well, he's hot headed.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Well, I've been in Saint.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Louis since nineteen eighty five covering baseball and I seem
- 17:16Speaker 3: to remember conclusively Saint Louis loves hard those players who
- 17:20Speaker 3: were scrappy and intense, and they're not you know, they'll
- 17:23Speaker 3: they'll they'll stir it up.
- 17:25Speaker 4: On the field. So why is that now? Oh we
- 17:30Speaker 4: can't have this now? Like why I'm confused?
- 17:33Speaker 3: Saint Louis is known for loving those kind of players.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Did I think you're You're exactly right.
- 17:39Speaker 4: So I don't get it.
- 17:41Speaker 3: I don't get this anti controllerst currency out there. And
- 17:44Speaker 3: I'm not saying all Cardinals fans, I do not get it.
- 17:47Speaker 3: And if you're going to say trade him, because give
- 17:51Speaker 3: me reasons that are legitimate reasons, not because you don't
- 17:54Speaker 3: like him personally.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Right, that's right.
- 17:55Speaker 1: I think if the organization I'm going to trade or
- 17:57Speaker 1: at least look, that's something he even wants. It's too
- 18:01Speaker 1: clear a space because they have so many first base
- 18:04Speaker 1: DH guys, which again is not a reflection of Conterrass,
- 18:06Speaker 1: it's a reflection of the roster.
- 18:07Speaker 2: We know this, we talk about it all the time.
- 18:09Speaker 1: But that would create space for Burls in full time
- 18:12Speaker 1: at first base, which would create more space than the
- 18:15Speaker 1: outfield for somebody else, Etta, et cetera. And for that reason,
- 18:19Speaker 1: like we we know that are not a discourse. We've
- 18:21Speaker 1: talked about it for like twelve straight months. Unless oship
- 18:24Speaker 1: is willing to pay more money, they're not going to
- 18:25Speaker 1: be able to trade him. That being said, ownership should
- 18:28Speaker 1: pay more money. It's whats best for the organization and
- 18:30Speaker 1: the player to move on from.
- 18:32Speaker 3: And they're still going to save money and they're still
- 18:35Speaker 3: going to save money.
- 18:38Speaker 1: But for Contreras, I think somebody great, it's a little
- 18:40Speaker 1: more interesting because I think he does. You're right, he
- 18:42Speaker 1: does have more value. Starting pitching is always the high cost.
- 18:45Speaker 1: He's not going to go just to go. It's going
- 18:47Speaker 1: to have to be a contender. It's going to be
- 18:48Speaker 1: somewhere close to Nashville. He's very particular, as we know,
- 18:51Speaker 1: and he's earned the right to be. For Contreras, if
- 18:53Speaker 1: he does decide to look at his options, there there
- 18:57Speaker 1: will be something out there for There will be a
- 18:59Speaker 1: market for conturers. Based on the bat alone.
- 19:03Speaker 5: I would be very surprised come twenty twenty six if
- 19:07Speaker 5: I would be shocked come twenty twenty six if all
- 19:08Speaker 5: three players are with the Cardinals. But I would be
- 19:10Speaker 5: a little surprised if all three or not. I would
- 19:13Speaker 5: say two go, and the two that I think go
- 19:17Speaker 5: are Aron.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Auto and Sunny and Gray. So book mark this, come
- 19:20Speaker 2: back to February and tell.
- 19:21Speaker 3: Me i'd co sign on that. Because I never answered
- 19:24Speaker 3: the question, not that I'm talking. I was just talking
- 19:26Speaker 3: because it's very because, very difficult, uh proposition. But no,
- 19:30Speaker 3: I would cost sign on that if you asked me
- 19:32Speaker 3: if you want first, But yeah, I said they're going
- 19:35Speaker 3: to trade two, I would on those.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Are we going to be able to bet that at
- 19:40Speaker 4: Draft Kings starting bedding?
- 19:41Speaker 1: Speaking of bedding, you can download the Draft Kings Sportsbook

- 20:40Speaker 3: Know, that's about the that's like the cost of a
- 20:43Speaker 3: pumpkin spice lot to day.
- 20:45Speaker 4: That's not even that good. No, right there you go.
- 20:48Speaker 4: Actually it's pretty good.
- 20:49Speaker 2: That's what you got, Bobby.
- 20:50Speaker 3: That that's like, you know, oh, okay, a good pumpkin
- 20:56Speaker 3: spice a lot take costs more than five bucks, right yeah,
- 21:03Speaker 3: you know, so yeah, I mean that's a that's a
- 21:04Speaker 3: great h that's a great buy.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Don't forgetet it.
- 21:10Speaker 1: We have one more sponsorship and then Berniona are going
- 21:13Speaker 1: to do uh to John if you will. As he
- 21:17Speaker 1: enters the final three games at his long decorated Cardinals career,
- 21:21Speaker 1: he will be with the team before the end of
- 21:23Speaker 1: the season. I believe he has plans to be in
- 21:25Speaker 1: Chicago for the final series of the season, but I'd
- 21:29Speaker 1: be interested to see how Bush Stadium. I don't know
- 21:32Speaker 1: if I can around based on current trends. Recognize this
- 21:36Speaker 1: and remembers him. First, I'll look for here from Arena Club.
- 21:40Speaker 4: We will be hey.
- 21:40Speaker 7: If you're a card collector or you're looking to collect,
- 21:44Speaker 7: I sell trade Arena Club to the spot. I'm going
- 21:46Speaker 7: to tell you why because the old process a j
- 21:50Speaker 7: was very packed, tons of comments, send it in for grading,
- 21:54Speaker 7: and then finally you get everything back. This is weeks
- 21:57Speaker 7: and weeks and you can start to try and sell
- 21:59Speaker 7: the car. We have eliminated that with Arena Club, or
- 22:02Speaker 7: they have. I act like I'm part of it, but
- 22:04Speaker 7: in really one step.
- 22:07Speaker 8: Arena's your one stuff shop for everything get is there.
- 22:10Speaker 8: It's grated, It spins around coolly shows you three D

- 22:21Speaker 1: It?
- 22:22Speaker 8: Gives you an instant offer. You can buy it back
- 22:24Speaker 8: and re rip another slap pack and try for someone else,
- 22:27Speaker 8: or you can keep it and hope the value goes
- 22:29Speaker 8: up and sell it a later date. It is truly
- 22:31Speaker 8: the best spot to get.
- 22:32Speaker 7: Carved twenty percent off your first can be had right
- 22:35Speaker 7: now at Arena club dot com. Slash fr u L
- 22:37Speaker 7: and use code foul.
- 22:41Speaker 5: All right, Bernie, the John Mosalla Eira is coming.
- 22:43Speaker 2: To an end.
- 22:45Speaker 1: He will be in attendance for the final three games
- 22:47Speaker 1: is obviously at BAD. I know that you have a
- 22:50Speaker 1: video that I would highly recommend people checking out, dedicated
- 22:54Speaker 1: towards Mo and his career. There's no way we'll be
- 22:57Speaker 1: able to fit in his entire career when he's accomplished
- 23:01Speaker 1: for this organization and Major League Baseball in this short segment,
- 23:04Speaker 1: but what would you like to see or how would
- 23:07Speaker 1: you like to see Moby remembered this in his final
- 23:09Speaker 1: health series.
- 23:10Speaker 3: As you know, I've been a really tough critic of
- 23:12Speaker 3: Mode the last couple of three years. Okay, and so
- 23:15Speaker 3: uh when I when I said about to do this video,
- 23:17Speaker 3: which isn't up yet but it will be, and it's long,
- 23:20Speaker 3: but you can watch it in sections like you would
- 23:22Speaker 3: listen to a radio talk show, in sections. You know,
- 23:26Speaker 3: I thought, you know, people are going to say, well,
- 23:29Speaker 3: you're a hypocrite because you've been pound on it, Because
- 23:31Speaker 3: my my, it's not only my wish. But it's also
- 23:34Speaker 3: my belief that Cardinals fans on Sunday, because I do
- 23:37Speaker 3: believe John was like, I'll be thrown out of some
- 23:39Speaker 3: ceremonial first pitch, should treat him with kindness, and they
- 23:45Speaker 3: should be polite, and they should be civil.
- 23:50Speaker 4: And they should appreciate.
- 23:52Speaker 3: As frustrating as the recent seasons have been, they really should,
- 23:55Speaker 3: they really should take time, deep breath and remember all
- 23:59Speaker 3: the great baseball that John mose Like played a huge
- 24:03Speaker 3: role in providing for.
- 24:04Speaker 4: This fan base.
- 24:08Speaker 3: You know, when you have when you have year after
- 24:10Speaker 3: year after year after year after year after year of success,
- 24:13Speaker 3: high end success, that's not that all that doesn't get
- 24:18Speaker 3: wiped away in a race because you've had three disappointing seasons.
- 24:21Speaker 4: It doesn't work that way.
- 24:24Speaker 3: And I also think, and this will be my last
- 24:27Speaker 3: point on this, I also think Saint Louis sins I
- 24:30Speaker 3: moved here and I consider myself a Saint Louis and
- 24:33Speaker 3: Saint Louis baseball fans have had an impeccable reputation with
- 24:37Speaker 3: in not just baseball but all sports, of being classy,
- 24:42Speaker 3: the type of fans that will applaud visiting players when
- 24:45Speaker 3: they make a great play or they do something special,
- 24:48Speaker 3: Cardinals fans will give them an ovation. And it's like
- 24:51Speaker 3: through the years, Katie, I can't tell you how many
- 24:53Speaker 3: baseball people from other teams, players, managers, etc.
- 24:58Speaker 4: Instead of like got these fans are incredible. I mean
- 25:01Speaker 4: they're just incredible. They're so they love.
- 25:04Speaker 3: Baseball so much they appreciate even when the visiting team
- 25:06Speaker 3: does something. So my take on this is people around
- 25:10Speaker 3: the country, you know, they noticed all the empty seats.
- 25:13Speaker 3: They notice like the fans stayed away, and it's kind
- 25:16Speaker 3: of like, oh, you know, best fans of baseball type stuff, right, sarcasm.
- 25:22Speaker 4: If Cardinals fans after this incredible.
- 25:25Speaker 3: Run that John as they like said, if there is
- 25:27Speaker 3: noticeable booing or just unpleasantness.
- 25:30Speaker 4: And they can't they can't see it.
- 25:34Speaker 3: To basically take what three minutes four minutes to show
- 25:39Speaker 3: appreciation for all the great years, that's kind of sad
- 25:44Speaker 3: and I'd hate to see. I want Saint Louis baseball
- 25:47Speaker 3: fans to just maintain that great reputation they have. Right,
- 25:51Speaker 3: you can be upset with the way things have gone on,
- 25:54Speaker 3: of course, but you should have the class to appreciate
- 25:58Speaker 3: all the great stuff that happened with him being Walt
- 26:01Speaker 3: Jackeyese top assistant, the guy who was in charge of
- 26:05Speaker 3: the draft when they drafted Poolholes and Molina, and then
- 26:10Speaker 3: their record even with the last three years baked in,
- 26:13Speaker 3: their record since he became the head of the baseball
- 26:16Speaker 3: operations in two thousand and eight, I mean, it's really
- 26:20Speaker 3: really good, even with the bad stuff baked in.
- 26:22Speaker 4: So show some class. Please be vi.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Fully upset over the state of the franchise right now.
- 26:29Speaker 1: I wouldn't blame you, I get it. We just talked
- 26:31Speaker 1: about how disappointed I was to have you know, thy
- 26:34Speaker 1: straight seasons about the October. You can also take a
- 26:38Speaker 1: look at what Saint Louis Cardinals have accomplished over the
- 26:40Speaker 1: last two decades. I mean I laughed about this with
- 26:43Speaker 1: last month. He's been with the Cardinals longer than I've
- 26:45Speaker 1: been alive. That is impressive to and uh, I think
- 26:49Speaker 1: that took both of us by surprising when we figured
- 26:51Speaker 1: that about. That's impressive to do in any franchise with
- 26:55Speaker 1: any sport base on in particular when when change and
- 26:57Speaker 1: turnover is very, very high, and the Saint Louis Cardinals
- 27:01Speaker 1: are one of the most prestigious historic franchises in professional
- 27:03Speaker 1: sports for a reason. Yes, the state of the franchise
- 27:06Speaker 1: right now is not great, but Mo has done in
- 27:10Speaker 1: his entire career. It's a testament hard work, perseverance. I
- 27:13Speaker 1: mean hack He started as the beating practice because he
- 27:16Speaker 1: was left handed for the Colorado Rockies, and then he
- 27:18Speaker 1: went I don't know if you guys have ever talked
- 27:20Speaker 1: to a professional sports.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Clubhouse attendant before. If there's one job that's less glamorous.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Than writer, it would be that and worked his way
- 27:28Speaker 1: up to be one of the most highest ranking officials
- 27:32Speaker 1: and one of the best sports to work in.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Have your grids him.
- 27:36Speaker 5: No one's claiming he's perfect.
- 27:37Speaker 1: We certainly have not been best friends for many times
- 27:39Speaker 1: over the last five years, but there's a lot to
- 27:41Speaker 1: be expected and appreciated about what he's done in his career.
- 27:44Speaker 1: And if you don't feel the same way, that's totally okay,
- 27:48Speaker 1: that's totally right, No reason to boo. He's eving anyway.
- 27:51Speaker 1: You should be cheering and that's how you feel. So
- 27:55Speaker 1: I think that that we'll hear from a one more time.
- 27:57Speaker 1: He'll do an end of seasons conference, and then guess
- 28:01Speaker 1: what if you don't want to hear from ever.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Again, you don't have to. I hope remembers. I hope remember.
- 28:06Speaker 3: You know, look, and you know the two thousand level
- 28:09Speaker 3: World Series. The work he did putting that team together
- 28:12Speaker 3: and then filling in holes during the season was phenomenal.
- 28:15Speaker 3: And yet I've had people tell me, well, he doesn't
- 28:17Speaker 3: deserve any credit for that.
- 28:18Speaker 4: Oh he doesn't. I don't know. I thought David Freese was.
- 28:22Speaker 5: It was the scouting director for Albert Poole's.
- 28:24Speaker 4: Or yeah, right, and you out of your Millana. And
- 28:26Speaker 4: you know, also, you didn't like the Lence Berkman trade.
- 28:29Speaker 4: How that worked?
- 28:30Speaker 3: The guy that saved the season in Game six, two strikes,
- 28:34Speaker 3: two outs, cars are behind, bottom of the tenth, Berkman
- 28:39Speaker 3: beautiful stroke opposite field, game tied, Freeze wins it.
- 28:44Speaker 2: So you didn't like that.
- 28:48Speaker 3: I mean, he saved the season with those flipped and
- 28:51Speaker 3: Kobe Rasmus, whoever, nobody could, nobody liked he could play,
- 28:56Speaker 3: but he didn't get even try to get the.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Most of his ability.
- 28:58Speaker 3: He flipped him a three way where he got a
- 29:00Speaker 3: starting pitcher he needed and two relievers that he needed,
- 29:03Speaker 3: and they don't win the World Series. And that twenty eleven,
- 29:06Speaker 3: Oh yeah, Matt ho Holiday for nothing in two thousand
- 29:09Speaker 3: and nine, they win the division after they get in.
- 29:11Speaker 4: I mean, these are just some of the things. I
- 29:13Speaker 4: could go on and on and on.
- 29:15Speaker 3: But since he became the head of Baseball operations in
- 29:18Speaker 3: two thousand and eight, the only two teams that have
- 29:20Speaker 3: played in more postseasons.
- 29:21Speaker 4: Are the Dodgers and the Yankees. And I would say
- 29:24Speaker 4: they have like a little bit of a financial.
- 29:27Speaker 2: A little player market.
- 29:30Speaker 4: Three, right, you know one other thing.
- 29:34Speaker 3: I love this one, you know, so they'll have I
- 29:36Speaker 3: assume they're going to have a losing season this year,
- 29:38Speaker 3: So that'd be two losing seasons in eighteen years. And
- 29:41Speaker 3: I'm not saying that's great. You never want to see
- 29:43Speaker 3: a losing season. The other teams in the l Central combined.
- 29:45Speaker 3: When the Cardinals have had two losing seasons as of
- 29:49Speaker 3: right now, this doesn't count. You know, maybe Cincinnati losing season.
- 29:53Speaker 3: Pittsburgh will have a LOSA.
- 29:55Speaker 4: Let me just shut up. Two losing seasons.
- 29:58Speaker 3: The rest of the teams in the Vision combined, and
- 30:01Speaker 3: this includes when Houston was still here, have combined for
- 30:04Speaker 3: forty one losing seasons.
- 30:05Speaker 4: Cardinals event too.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not that's not too shabby.
- 30:09Speaker 4: I don't think, oh no, we haven't bad. It's hell
- 30:13Speaker 4: on earth.
- 30:14Speaker 3: So anyway, well, I mean it's a great record. I
- 30:19Speaker 3: understand the disappointment, but it's like, don't let that block
- 30:22Speaker 3: out all of the great.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Been likely Cardinals Hall of Famer and his significance with
- 30:28Speaker 1: major League Baseball. It's something that is going to be
- 30:30Speaker 1: talked about and remembered for a very long time.
- 30:33Speaker 2: So with that, I got.
- 30:35Speaker 1: To go to the ballpark for our last three years,
- 30:38Speaker 1: and baseball happened. Bernie and I will be back and
- 30:41Speaker 1: talk to you next week for the last week of
- 30:43Speaker 1: the season, but we'll save all those goodbyes for later.
- 30:45Speaker 2: For Bernie, I'm Katie. This is criminal territory.
