- 2:42Speaker 6: Captain David Hodges of the Charleston Fire Department.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Hey doing, my friend?
- 2:45Speaker 2: Good?
- 2:45Speaker 7: Dave?
- 2:46Speaker 6: Are you I'm going to find Thank you for being here.
- 2:48Speaker 6: And it's part of the regatta festivities on Sunday, I think.
- 2:52Speaker 7: It is Sunday.
- 2:53Speaker 4: That's when the fire parade will be. Tell us about
- 2:55Speaker 4: the fire parade.
- 2:55Speaker 8: Yes, Sunday one o'clock we start lining up fire trucks.
- 2:58Speaker 8: It's a great time. It's it's a great competition amongst
- 3:03Speaker 8: regional firefighters. Used to be locally for years, you know,
- 3:07Speaker 8: and it's continued to grow. Now we've had registrants from
- 3:10Speaker 8: as far as Wyoming County that are coming to town
- 3:13Speaker 8: to showcase their fire apparatus and to interact with the children.
- 3:18Speaker 4: It is, you know, it's it's always a big part
- 3:20Speaker 4: of the ground.
- 3:21Speaker 6: How how many years this been going on as far
- 3:23Speaker 6: as you know, I mean, do you have any idea how?
- 3:26Speaker 8: I don't have that, but I remember as a kid
- 3:28Speaker 8: being okay, so you know, there's there's forty six years.
- 3:31Speaker 7: I'll be forty six Saturday. So so at least that yeah,
- 3:35Speaker 7: at least that's a kid.
- 3:36Speaker 6: And you said they're coming from all over like Wyoming County,
- 3:38Speaker 6: as far away as Wyoming County.
- 3:39Speaker 8: Used to showcase their apparatus and the interact with other
- 3:42Speaker 8: firefighters and just to spend time in the city. It's
- 3:44Speaker 8: in it's an exciting time for the city. So many
- 3:47Speaker 8: events going on.
- 3:48Speaker 6: Give us the layout of way that things are going
- 3:50Speaker 6: to work, as far as the line up and things
- 3:52Speaker 6: of that nature, where everybody lines up.
- 3:53Speaker 8: So we'll be lining up at the Canal Boulevard West
- 3:56Speaker 8: and Ohio Avenue, and they line up westward.
- 4:00Speaker 7: It's wards Patrick Street and then we pull out.
- 4:02Speaker 8: We go down Ohio and hit Virginia Street and take
- 4:04Speaker 8: Virginia Street all through downtown all the way down to
- 4:07Speaker 8: Leon Sullivan Way.
- 4:08Speaker 7: For our parade.
- 4:09Speaker 8: The street tree typically lined the weather looks great. It's
- 4:13Speaker 8: gonna be hot, as Brian says, It's gonna be hideous hot,
- 4:16Speaker 8: hideous hot, as Brian says. Uh so, it's it's gonna
- 4:20Speaker 8: be a great parade.
- 4:22Speaker 6: Now, go back to when you were a kid and
- 4:24Speaker 6: you talked about coming to the fire parade. What was
- 4:26Speaker 6: it as that that that that kid that made you.
- 4:29Speaker 4: Want to do this for a living.
- 4:31Speaker 8: So I was raised around fire departments. My dad was
- 4:33Speaker 8: longtime fire chief in my hometown of Whitesville down in
- 4:36Speaker 8: Boone County, So, uh you know, I was always I
- 4:40Speaker 8: grew up in a fire station, grew up around fire trucks,
- 4:42Speaker 8: and I'm still like a kid when at heart when
- 4:44Speaker 8: it comes to fire trucks, I love looking at other
- 4:46Speaker 8: people's equipment, their ideas, their concepts. It's just we're all
- 4:50Speaker 8: children like fire trucks, And I guess I'm still a
- 4:53Speaker 8: childhood heart.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Don't you.
- 4:54Speaker 6: I think this is very interesting, and I guess maybe
- 4:58Speaker 6: this is true some other professions as well, but it's
- 5:00Speaker 6: it seems to me. I talk to a lot of
- 5:01Speaker 6: folks that are in law enforcement, whether they're police officers,
- 5:04Speaker 6: maybe they're in magistrates, whatever, and they say, well, my
- 5:07Speaker 6: dad was or my grandfather was me a police and
- 5:10Speaker 6: fire is it just something that you think is.
- 5:11Speaker 4: In the blood of first responders in general?
- 5:13Speaker 8: It's generational? Yeah, yeah, we have some generations here. It's
- 5:17Speaker 8: the Charleston Fire Department. You know, once you get hooked
- 5:20Speaker 8: on it, it's just a trap. You can't get away
- 5:22Speaker 8: from it. You know, I'm nearing that retirement age, the
- 5:25Speaker 8: magic age of fifty that we all talk about and
- 5:27Speaker 8: look forward to, and you sort of get hard feelings
- 5:30Speaker 8: about that. You start worrying about that and like, oh man,
- 5:33Speaker 8: what else do I know besides fire service?
- 5:35Speaker 6: Well, and you know, we've have we seen and this
- 5:38Speaker 6: is not necessarily an issue for you, but we've seen
- 5:40Speaker 6: issues around the state where a lot of our volunteer
- 5:43Speaker 6: fire departments are either closing or losing members because they're
- 5:47Speaker 6: just not a lot of young people. That seemingly, and
- 5:50Speaker 6: I could be wrong, that seemingly want to go into this.
- 5:53Speaker 7: Yeah it is.
- 5:54Speaker 8: It's and you know, and a lot of other career
- 5:55Speaker 8: fire departments are seeing at decrease in recruitments and the
- 5:59Speaker 8: public's verse, agency's law enforcement wading oft, they're seeing a
- 6:02Speaker 8: decrease in recruitment of the younger generations just not want
- 6:05Speaker 8: to enter the public safety field. But it's a great field.
- 6:08Speaker 8: It's got great benefits. It's very rewarding. But fortunately here
- 6:12Speaker 8: at Charleston.
- 6:13Speaker 7: We're doing well.
- 6:14Speaker 8: We have great We still have an active hiring list.
- 6:16Speaker 8: We just hired twelve firefighters correction eleven. So you know,
- 6:22Speaker 8: we're we're doing what great. I think that the testament
- 6:25Speaker 8: goes out to all the crews, you know, the personnel
- 6:27Speaker 8: we have, the spreading the great word of what a
- 6:29Speaker 8: great organization we have here in the city.
- 6:31Speaker 6: So when David Hodges again from the Charleston Fire Department
- 6:34Speaker 6: about the fire parade and it'll happen on Sunday, it's
- 6:39Speaker 6: part of the regarded in downtown Charleston.
- 6:41Speaker 4: Of course, you can go to.
- 6:42Speaker 6: The regattas social media or our websites we get information.
- 6:45Speaker 6: City of Charleston has got it all there as well.
- 6:47Speaker 6: And again with so many things going on the Regatta.
- 6:49Speaker 6: I've got a guest coming on every week to talk
- 6:51Speaker 6: about the different don't leave it my man Adam Harris
- 6:53Speaker 6: at because he's gonna come and talk wrestling tomorrow about
- 6:57Speaker 6: that about the Regatta pro wrestling event of course I
- 6:59Speaker 6: may it's going to be on Thursday as well. But
- 7:01Speaker 6: this is just one big part of so many different
- 7:03Speaker 6: things go into making Regard a huge. Now, you said
- 7:06Speaker 6: you're a Boom County guy. Yes, did you come to
- 7:09Speaker 6: the regatta though as a kid?
- 7:10Speaker 1: Oh?
- 7:10Speaker 7: Absolutely absolutely.
- 7:11Speaker 8: That's some of my best memories is as a as
- 7:14Speaker 8: a child is coming down to Regatta and seeing you know,
- 7:17Speaker 8: some of the larger bands and back then Alabama things
- 7:20Speaker 8: like that, and they're coming back. But yeah, so it's
- 7:25Speaker 8: gonna be a busy evening that day. I'll try to
- 7:26Speaker 8: make appearance at Alabama and I'll try to come on
- 7:29Speaker 8: down the street and see Montel Jordan and Bobby Brown.
- 7:32Speaker 6: Now I know that you know, with with both of
- 7:35Speaker 6: these festivities going on, and we've talked about it. Uh
- 7:39Speaker 6: uh that city services, whether it's you guys, whether it's police,
- 7:42Speaker 6: whether it's for you know, any kind of first responder
- 7:45Speaker 6: or whatever. Street department. Everybody is going to be a
- 7:47Speaker 6: little bit stretched for this, and of course you're going
- 7:49Speaker 6: to be adding the heat into it as well. Temperatures
- 7:52Speaker 6: not the heat, and actual temperatures are gonna be up
- 7:55Speaker 6: around one hundred, maybe a little bit warmer as we
- 7:57Speaker 6: headed into the fourth h line weekend. You guys prepared
- 7:59Speaker 6: for all this?
- 7:59Speaker 7: We are? We like to think we are.
- 8:02Speaker 8: You know, the operations Chief's been working very busily trying
- 8:06Speaker 8: to feel all the walk teams that we need.
- 8:09Speaker 7: We know it's a very busy time for us.
- 8:10Speaker 8: We got to have so many divers on the water,
- 8:12Speaker 8: water rescue teams out on the river, and and our
- 8:16Speaker 8: walk teams. I can't say enough about how import they're
- 8:18Speaker 8: going to be.
- 8:19Speaker 4: And when you say walk teams, to find.
- 8:20Speaker 7: This, paramedics and e mts. It's going to be out
- 8:22Speaker 7: on the street.
- 8:23Speaker 4: Literally just what the name implies, walking around.
- 8:25Speaker 7: Walking on the around, checking well being.
- 8:27Speaker 8: Yeah, they have a beat like a police officer would
- 8:29Speaker 8: be old school, So they're going to be out walking
- 8:32Speaker 8: around just trying, you know, checking the well being of people.
- 8:34Speaker 8: They're gonna be in the quadrants that way, if someone
- 8:36Speaker 8: does collapse, they're quickly to respond to them, you know,
- 8:41Speaker 8: checking the chill zones, referring people to them. If somebody's
- 8:43Speaker 8: getting overheat, there's gonna be so many chill zone set
- 8:45Speaker 8: up that they can go and cool off at. So yeah,
- 8:48Speaker 8: it's gonna be a very busy time, but I think
- 8:50Speaker 8: we're prepared.
- 8:51Speaker 6: What is it that people need to know when they
- 8:53Speaker 6: come out to regatta? As far as that, I mean,
- 8:55Speaker 6: the temperatures are going to be extremely hot. You put
- 8:58Speaker 6: a lot of bodies in there together. What is it
- 9:00Speaker 6: that the average person needs to know when they come
- 9:03Speaker 6: out here? Because sometimes you know, when people have heat
- 9:05Speaker 6: strokes or they get overcome by the heat or whatever,
- 9:08Speaker 6: they'll they'll say, well, I thought I was okay and
- 9:10Speaker 6: I wasn't.
- 9:10Speaker 4: What if people need to.
- 9:11Speaker 7: Know know your limitations.
- 9:13Speaker 8: You know, if you're not accustomed to being out in
- 9:16Speaker 8: the heat, be prepared. You know, hydrations great, You know
- 9:22Speaker 8: that it's it's a it's a it's a drinking holiday,
- 9:25Speaker 8: so pace yourselves. You know, you definitely need to substitute
- 9:29Speaker 8: some water in with that if you're drinking consuming alcohol.
- 9:33Speaker 8: Just be prepared for the situation. Identify you know, if
- 9:36Speaker 8: you start feeling bad, get the cool where you seek
- 9:38Speaker 8: some shades, seek some shelter, seek some assistance from someone, And.
- 9:41Speaker 4: There's nothing like water.
- 9:42Speaker 6: I mean, we all might like to have an adult
- 9:44Speaker 6: beverage or a coke or Pepsi or Gator ray, even
- 9:46Speaker 6: Gator even the sports drinks.
- 9:48Speaker 4: There's nothing like water.
- 9:49Speaker 8: There's nothing like water. You know that that's the key
- 9:51Speaker 8: to hydration.
- 9:52Speaker 6: And you talked about being on the water as far
- 9:55Speaker 6: as the river goes. This entire festival is built on
- 9:57Speaker 6: the river, you know. So what people need to know
- 10:01Speaker 6: about I saw actually saw you a couple doing a
- 10:03Speaker 6: couple of TV interviews about this yesterday. What do people
- 10:05Speaker 6: need to know about water safety? And how are you
- 10:08Speaker 6: guys involved in that.
- 10:09Speaker 8: Be familiar with your boaters regulations, Make sure your vessels prepared.
- 10:13Speaker 8: Make sure you have adequate PFDs, fire extinguishers, all those
- 10:16Speaker 8: require things. Make sure your vessels in good running condition.
- 10:20Speaker 8: You know, you see a lot of everything from the
- 10:23Speaker 8: largest stern wheelers the smaller boats that people bring out
- 10:26Speaker 8: to enjoy the events. So just make sure your vessel's prepared.
- 10:30Speaker 8: And the PFDs is the biggest thing, you know, we
- 10:32Speaker 8: can't emphasize that enough. If you've got someone that can't
- 10:34Speaker 8: swim put a PFD on them. You know, that's unfortunate
- 10:38Speaker 8: when we do have someone to fall overboard and we
- 10:39Speaker 8: have to make a rescue or whatever. But you know,
- 10:42Speaker 8: just be prepared and know those voters regulations and.
- 10:46Speaker 4: We say PFD that's personal flotation.
- 10:48Speaker 8: Personal floatation a botom Sorry, yeah, no, I just want
- 10:50Speaker 8: to make sure, buddy, Yeah, yeah, we want to clarify that.
- 10:52Speaker 6: And look, you know, if you do have a couple
- 10:55Speaker 6: of beers, you know, your swimming skills probably aren't what
- 10:58Speaker 6: they should be. Sure, your skills in general aren't what
- 11:01Speaker 6: they should.
- 11:02Speaker 8: Be at the right in your swimming, and you're gonna
- 11:04Speaker 8: be dehydrating anyway from the heat, excessive heat.
- 11:06Speaker 7: So those a couple of beers. Yeah, so yeah, absolutely.
- 11:09Speaker 4: All right, give us all the details again.
- 11:12Speaker 6: Let's kind of reiterate the times into places and everything
- 11:14Speaker 6: for the fire parade.
- 11:15Speaker 8: Lineup for the fire parade, it's going to be at
- 11:17Speaker 8: one pm at Ohio and Canall Boulevard West. Parade's gonna

- 15:07Speaker 13: couple of years ago in Poke, outside of PoCA. It
- 15:11Speaker 13: was one hundred thousand square foot manufacturing facility that had
- 15:14Speaker 13: been vacant and abandoned for several years. It was in
- 15:17Speaker 13: really bad shape. Sits right on the river with barge
- 15:20Speaker 13: facility served by rail. We bought the building because we
- 15:25Speaker 13: have such a shortage of industrial sites in the region
- 15:29Speaker 13: quite frankly throughout the state of West Virginia. So the
- 15:32Speaker 13: property had been sitting there, no one was investing in it.
- 15:35Speaker 13: We stepped up. We bought it with the hopes that
- 15:38Speaker 13: we would have a site for new manufacturing or an
- 15:42Speaker 13: expansion of an existing business here, and we were fortunate
- 15:47Speaker 13: enough thirteen months after construction started and was complete, we
- 15:52Speaker 13: were able to attract Centauri Ground Support, which is a
- 15:56Speaker 13: new manufacturing business entering into our market. It's a joint
- 16:00Speaker 13: venture between a Swedish firm sand Vic, which does mining
- 16:05Speaker 13: manufacturing producers mining manufacturing equipment, and Alpha Metallurgical. We all
- 16:10Speaker 13: know about Alpha, so it's a joint venture between those
- 16:13Speaker 13: two firms to manufacture roof bolts for the mining industry.
- 16:19Speaker 4: And how did this whole thing come about, Well.
- 16:22Speaker 13: The manufacturing concern, well, I think they had been looking
- 16:27Speaker 13: for some time in the state. We were approached by
- 16:30Speaker 13: their broker who approached us about whether or not our
- 16:34Speaker 13: facility might be attractive to them, and they came and
- 16:37Speaker 13: visited and right away they were very interested. They were
- 16:41Speaker 13: faced with either having to build a new manufacturing facility
- 16:46Speaker 13: in this of about one hundred thousand square feet, which
- 16:49Speaker 13: is a very expensive proposition, very expensive, or they could
- 16:55Speaker 13: kind of take a look at our facility and they
- 16:57Speaker 13: really liked what they saw. Our facility is it's a big,
- 17:01Speaker 13: old industrial property. It's great for heavy manufacturing with cranes,
- 17:07Speaker 13: barge facilities served by rail it sits on seven and
- 17:10Speaker 13: a half acres, so it was really what they need.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Already made for this position almost was it was.
- 17:14Speaker 3: Ready made for them.
- 17:15Speaker 13: And I think the message here, and I speak for
- 17:19Speaker 13: the academic development community in West Virginia, we need more
- 17:22Speaker 13: ready sites for businesses here, whether it be raw land
- 17:26Speaker 13: that has utilities serving it and fully graded, all permitting done,
- 17:32Speaker 13: or whether it be buildings that are sitting there ready
- 17:35Speaker 13: to be occupied. We have a really hard time competing
- 17:39Speaker 13: with other states that have ready site programs and they're
- 17:43Speaker 13: investing in their sites in their communities, and we just
- 17:46Speaker 13: need more of that. The state of West Virginia is investing.
- 17:50Speaker 13: They're starting to invest in a ready sites program, so
- 17:53Speaker 13: we're getting more progress on that. We just need a
- 17:58Speaker 13: bigger injection of funds in order to help our communities
- 18:01Speaker 13: get those sites ready.
- 18:02Speaker 4: And what's our timeline here as far as.
- 18:05Speaker 13: It's for the new manufacturing facility anywhere from nine to
- 18:08Speaker 13: twelve months.
- 18:09Speaker 4: Okay.
- 18:09Speaker 13: So they came to the ribbon cutting. They had people
- 18:13Speaker 13: from all over the world, which was really interesting. They
- 18:16Speaker 13: had folks from Sweden, Austria, Australia and Germany who came
- 18:22Speaker 13: that are part of this new manufacturing concern, and they
- 18:27Speaker 13: were here for the first time, and they were walking
- 18:29Speaker 13: through the facility and starting to talk about how they
- 18:32Speaker 13: were going to lay out their equipment and what equipment
- 18:34Speaker 13: needed to be ordered. So by the time they order
- 18:37Speaker 13: their equipment and get it installed, it's going to be
- 18:39Speaker 13: about nine months at a minimum.
- 18:42Speaker 6: All those people from all over the world coming to PoCA,
- 18:45Speaker 6: Yeah and saying, wait a minute, your team is really
- 18:47Speaker 6: called the Dots.
- 18:48Speaker 4: Yes, yes it is, Yes it is. We love it is.
- 18:51Speaker 2: We love that.
- 18:52Speaker 3: Yes.

- 19:08Speaker 6: Corp dot net helping you understand your environment because what
- 19:11Speaker 6: you don't know can hurt you. And you talked about
- 19:13Speaker 6: those sites that are ready manufacturers in these companies.
- 19:18Speaker 4: They'd love to hear that that these are.
- 19:20Speaker 6: And obviously there's got to be as you said, there'll
- 19:21Speaker 6: be some things that have to be adapted a little bit.
- 19:24Speaker 6: But boy, if you've got a facility and you can
- 19:26Speaker 6: go out there and market it to the country, into
- 19:28Speaker 6: the rest of the world, it says, hey, we're ready,
- 19:30Speaker 6: come see us.
- 19:31Speaker 4: It certainly helps out a lot.
- 19:32Speaker 13: Yeah, because businesses need us to move at the speed
- 19:35Speaker 13: of business. We cannot say to them, oh, you need
- 19:39Speaker 13: a fifty thousand square foot building or one hundred thousand
- 19:42Speaker 13: square foot building. Hold on a minute, let me go
- 19:44Speaker 13: out and get some money together and find a site
- 19:47Speaker 13: and we'll build that for you, and then please come.
- 19:49Speaker 13: Because we all know that that's going to take two
- 19:52Speaker 13: in three years sometimes to be able to pull that together.
- 19:55Speaker 13: We've got to be able to move in a much
- 19:56Speaker 13: more timely manner. So that's why it's really important for
- 19:59Speaker 13: us to be able to invest in those sites now
- 20:02Speaker 13: and for communities to do that. It is a bit
- 20:05Speaker 13: of a risk. This was a heavy lift for us.
- 20:07Speaker 13: We're a small organization. We stepped out on a limb
- 20:10Speaker 13: to do this because we didn't get this all grant funded.
- 20:14Speaker 13: We actually have a mortgage on this building now, so
- 20:18Speaker 13: it's really critical that we do get some support in
- 20:21Speaker 13: the state's support that they're starting to bring to the
- 20:23Speaker 13: table is really going to be helpful. I didn't mention
- 20:26Speaker 13: that this new manufacturing concern. They themselves are investing twenty
- 20:30Speaker 13: five million dollars in this operation and they will be
- 20:34Speaker 13: creating anywhere from one hundred and twenty to one hundred
- 20:37Speaker 13: and fifty new manufacturing jobs.
- 20:39Speaker 4: I'd love to hear them.
- 20:40Speaker 3: That's a home run. It really is.
- 20:42Speaker 6: Anytime you can get that, and that means that they're
- 20:45Speaker 6: going to be looking for local people to fill these jobs.
- 20:48Speaker 4: There's always a possibility of people, you know.
- 20:50Speaker 6: And when you're talking, I mean, I don't know exactly
- 20:52Speaker 6: if you're at liberty to say, like what to pay
- 20:54Speaker 6: for these jobs is or I mean, well mid to
- 20:57Speaker 6: upper level. You can just use terms like that if
- 20:59Speaker 6: you want to. But people will drive too. I mean,
- 21:03Speaker 6: you know, if you pay them enough, that helps out
- 21:06Speaker 6: the entire region because people are willing to drive too.
- 21:08Speaker 13: Yeah, they have kind of arranged for different various jobs
- 21:13Speaker 13: that they have, but they are good paying manufacturing jobs.
- 21:16Speaker 13: And to your point, people will drive. And that's why
- 21:19Speaker 13: we market regionally because we know that the labor force
- 21:22Speaker 13: is coming. It's not going to come just from Putnam County.
- 21:25Speaker 13: It's going to come from Kennaugh County, Cable County, could
- 21:28Speaker 13: come from Boone County, Lincoln County, wherever. So it's really
- 21:32Speaker 13: important for us to present ourselves as a region to
- 21:36Speaker 13: these companies so that they understand that we do have
- 21:38Speaker 13: a workforce that will travel anywhere from fifty to sixty
- 21:42Speaker 13: miles for a good paying job.
- 21:44Speaker 6: Now, when they start doing the hiring, I know that's
- 21:47Speaker 6: all up to the company, and that's really not your
- 21:48Speaker 6: alls think, but you have to come back and you'll
- 21:50Speaker 6: have to let us know what people need to do
- 21:52Speaker 6: to apply for some of these jobs.
- 21:53Speaker 13: I will definitely do that, and we certainly want to
- 21:56Speaker 13: link them to some of our job training programs that
- 21:59Speaker 13: are out there, some of the apprenticeship programs that are
- 22:01Speaker 13: out there, because there will be jobs actually that are
- 22:04Speaker 13: maybe on a more entry level that some people can
- 22:07Speaker 13: get who maybe aren't skilled, who don't have all of
- 22:11Speaker 13: the skills for maybe a sophisticated manufacturing position, advanced manufacturing position,
- 22:16Speaker 13: all the way up to those that do work in
- 22:18Speaker 13: the advanced manufacturing sector. So I think there's going to
- 22:21Speaker 13: be something for everybody in the employement.
- 22:23Speaker 6: But that's not to say that they can't get them,
- 22:25Speaker 6: you know, no, they can because you start. I mean,
- 22:27Speaker 6: you know, the history is filled with people that started
- 22:30Speaker 6: at the lowest possible positions and before we know what,
- 22:32Speaker 6: they're president of the company.
- 22:33Speaker 4: It can happen.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 22:35Speaker 13: We've already talked about that, linking them to some of
- 22:37Speaker 13: the employment training opportunities for folks that have entry level skills,
- 22:42Speaker 13: and they were very excited about that because they do
- 22:44Speaker 13: have some positions that would match up with that, all
- 22:47Speaker 13: the way up to people who are in more of
- 22:49Speaker 13: the advanced manufacturing sector.
- 22:51Speaker 6: Talking to Teryl Ellis again of Advantage Valley, but they
- 22:54Speaker 6: have allan show on five eighty line Bronche imparted by
- 22:55Speaker 6: the All New Generations Board of Hurricane Visit Generations for
- 22:58Speaker 6: dot Com. But when we talk about till having a
- 23:01Speaker 6: facility like this, it doesnt just affect that facility. Those
- 23:03Speaker 6: people are going to go to the local grocery store,
- 23:06Speaker 6: those people are going to get gas at the local places,
- 23:08Speaker 6: they are going to go to the flower shop.
- 23:10Speaker 4: They're going to do all.
- 23:11Speaker 6: These things, and so it spreads throughout the community and
- 23:14Speaker 6: throughout the valley.
- 23:15Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, actually there's studies that show that one
- 23:18Speaker 13: manufacturing job will generate you know, anywhere from four to
- 23:22Speaker 13: five to six indirect new jobs created in the economy.
- 23:27Speaker 13: So we we feel very fortunate that we were able
- 23:29Speaker 13: to get this company. And think about it, it's one
- 23:33Speaker 13: hundred and twenty to one hundred and fifty families that
- 23:37Speaker 13: are positively impacted by the They're.
- 23:39Speaker 6: Going to be just one guy or one one lady
- 23:41Speaker 6: coming into work. There's going to be kids, there's going
- 23:43Speaker 6: to be you know, spouses, there are going to be
- 23:46Speaker 6: all the things that come along with that. So they're
- 23:48Speaker 6: going to be and then in turn involved in the community.
- 23:51Speaker 6: So it's the one one for everybody.
- 23:52Speaker 3: There, that's right.
- 23:53Speaker 13: So we're really excited to be able to have that
- 23:55Speaker 13: kind of impact, and you know, this is just part
- 23:58Speaker 13: of a larger trend for our region. Recently sat down
- 24:01Speaker 13: and started thinking back over the past four years about
- 24:04Speaker 13: the investments that have been announced in our region and
- 24:09Speaker 13: for the larger investments that are in the manufacturing sector.
- 24:14Speaker 13: This is just manufacturing only. Over the past four years,
- 24:18Speaker 13: we've been able to enumerate about fifty two hundred new
- 24:21Speaker 13: manufacturing jobs that are coming into our region. Now that
- 24:25Speaker 13: obviously that includes new core that We've talked about a
- 24:28Speaker 13: lot time at up in Jackson County, service Wire expanding
- 24:34Speaker 13: in Cable County. You know, there are a number of
- 24:37Speaker 13: these new projects coming in that are either new or
- 24:40Speaker 13: expansions of existing businesses. So when you think about that
- 24:43Speaker 13: multiplier effect in our region, it does go back to
- 24:47Speaker 13: I know, I was on here maybe two years ago
- 24:50Speaker 13: or three years ago talking about our housing study that
- 24:52Speaker 13: we did, and we started looking at all the new
- 24:55Speaker 13: jobs that were coming in and then the indirect jobs,
- 24:58Speaker 13: and it's a huge each number of new jobs that
- 25:02Speaker 13: are being created in the region, and so that presents
- 25:05Speaker 13: all kinds of opportunities for other kinds of investment in
- 25:08Speaker 13: spinoff businesses housing. So we continue to work very hard
- 25:13Speaker 13: on trying to get new housing developed in the region
- 25:15Speaker 13: and that's been pretty exciting well.
- 25:18Speaker 6: And as somebody to speak to that point, as somebody
- 25:20Speaker 6: who comes from a coal mining background my family in
- 25:22Speaker 6: southern West Virginia, I can tell you that you may
- 25:24Speaker 6: have a coal mine here, but down the road you've
- 25:26Speaker 6: got six machine shops that are supporting that. You get
- 25:28Speaker 6: people that are supplying the fuel and supplying the oil,
- 25:30Speaker 6: and everything goes along with it. I'm not saying it's
- 25:32Speaker 6: going to have all that, but again you're going to
- 25:34Speaker 6: have mean if something breaks, they got to have somebody
- 25:37Speaker 6: local that they can depend on to help us out.
- 25:39Speaker 6: The necessarily have to be something from that field, just
- 25:41Speaker 6: somebody who can help get us back and running again.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Right.
- 25:44Speaker 13: Well, we see that with the really the much larger
- 25:47Speaker 13: investments like newcre We're already seeing smaller companies that are
- 25:51Speaker 13: starting to inquire about locating here or who have already
- 25:54Speaker 13: made decisions to locate here in order to be a
- 25:57Speaker 13: vendor with New Core. So you do see that with
- 26:02Speaker 13: some of those much larger investments. But to your point,
- 26:07Speaker 13: there are also the non manufacturing jobs that get created
- 26:12Speaker 13: to support all those new employees that are coming in.
- 26:15Speaker 6: You talked about housing, and that's a that's a very
- 26:17Speaker 6: good point because you were on this show in the
- 26:19Speaker 6: last year or two talking about the housing study that
- 26:22Speaker 6: you did.
- 26:22Speaker 4: Any updates on that and what you learn.
- 26:25Speaker 13: We are actually updating the housing study because we've had
- 26:29Speaker 13: so much interest on the part of builders and they're
- 26:32Speaker 13: wondering if our numbers have changed any and their lenders
- 26:35Speaker 13: are wondering if our numbers have changed any So we're
- 26:38Speaker 13: updating the study and that should be done in July
- 26:44Speaker 13: mid by mid July, so maybe I can come back
- 26:46Speaker 13: on and talk about the results of that. We continue
- 26:50Speaker 13: to work with builders out of state and in state
- 26:54Speaker 13: who use that study quite a bit. I mean, we
- 26:56Speaker 13: all we all intuitively know that we have a housing problem,
- 27:01Speaker 13: a housing shortage, and it's not just West Virginia or
- 27:04Speaker 13: not just this region. It really is across the country.
- 27:07Speaker 13: But being able to quantify that has really been helpful
- 27:10Speaker 13: to our to the people we're talking to about building.
- 27:13Speaker 13: So we are talking to some builders about some projects
- 27:18Speaker 13: in Cable County and Connaugh County specifically those two areas.
- 27:22Speaker 13: Of course, we all know about the project that got
- 27:24Speaker 13: announced in Putnam County, that the Woodworth Farms project, so
- 27:29Speaker 13: we're anxiously awaiting that and just sort of organically on
- 27:36Speaker 13: on our own within with our own capacity in the area.
- 27:41Speaker 13: We've got about I think last year we calculated about
- 27:46Speaker 13: seven hundred and fifty units of new housing that were
- 27:50Speaker 13: built in the region. That was just last year, in
- 27:52Speaker 13: twenty twenty five, and there were about four hundred the
- 27:56Speaker 13: previous year. So we're seeing a study increase in the
- 27:59Speaker 13: supply of new inventory and hope to really increase that
- 28:04Speaker 13: number significantly in the next year to two.
- 28:06Speaker 4: And the bottom line is we still need housing though,
- 28:08Speaker 4: and we still need it.
- 28:09Speaker 13: We still need it because we had projected about ten
- 28:12Speaker 13: thousand new rental units that were needed, and I forget
- 28:17Speaker 13: the number now of the single family homes that were needed,
- 28:20Speaker 13: but it's a very large number of units now that
- 28:23Speaker 13: was across a ten county region over a five year period,
- 28:26Speaker 13: and so even making a dent in fifty percent of
- 28:30Speaker 13: that is going to go a long way to helping
- 28:32Speaker 13: us with the problem.
- 28:33Speaker 6: I don't want to talk about the footprint of Advantage
- 28:35Speaker 6: Valley because I mean, we hear that name thrown out
- 28:38Speaker 6: there a lot.
- 28:38Speaker 4: You've been on the show several times since I've been
- 28:40Speaker 4: doing the show.
- 28:41Speaker 6: Explain the whole concept behind it, Advantage Valley maybe for
- 28:43Speaker 6: people that haven't heard it.
- 28:44Speaker 13: Yeah, So, the Advantage Valley footprint includes the Charleston and
- 28:48Speaker 13: Huntington metro areas combined, and we also include Mason and
- 28:52Speaker 13: Jackson County in that. And really the concept when the
- 28:56Speaker 13: organization was formed, and it was formed back in the
- 28:59Speaker 13: late nineties around the year two thousand, was to market
- 29:02Speaker 13: those two msas or metropolitan statistical areas as one market.
- 29:10Speaker 13: And because quite frankly, when we go out talk to
- 29:14Speaker 13: the rest of the world about coming to West Virginia,
- 29:17Speaker 13: number one, if they know anything about West Virginia, many
- 29:21Speaker 13: times they don't, So we're that's right. Your cousin in
- 29:25Speaker 13: Roanoke is not is not near us if they know anything,
- 29:30Speaker 13: what they what they think is that it's a very
- 29:33Speaker 13: rural and it is.
- 29:34Speaker 3: It's a very rural small state.
- 29:37Speaker 13: So their immediate impression is, well, there's not enough mass there,
- 29:41Speaker 13: there's not enough of a market there, there's not enough
- 29:44Speaker 13: of a workforce there for us to do anything. So
- 29:48Speaker 13: when we can go out and market those two metro
- 29:51Speaker 13: areas as one because it is one market, I mean,
- 29:54Speaker 13: think about it. You commute from Putnam County into Charleston.
- 29:58Speaker 13: There are Charleston people that commute up Jackson County to work,
- 30:01Speaker 13: or people or go to Mason County. Now we truly
- 30:05Speaker 13: are a commuter region and businesses do business with each
- 30:09Speaker 13: other within this region regularly and have multiple locations. So
- 30:13Speaker 13: we need to start talking about ourselves as one regional economy.
- 30:18Speaker 13: And when we do that, and I go out and
- 30:20Speaker 13: talk to people and I say, oh, we have a
- 30:22Speaker 13: population of six hundred thousand in our region, about a
- 30:26Speaker 13: third of the state's population. Oh and we have a
- 30:29Speaker 13: workforce of about three hundred and fifty thousand. Did you
- 30:32Speaker 13: know We've got two airports. We've got you know, four
- 30:37Speaker 13: well three interstates, and several other four lane highways intersecting
- 30:42Speaker 13: two Class two railroads. We've got three universities. I mean,
- 30:46Speaker 13: you go on and on, and you start listing the assets,
- 30:48Speaker 13: and then you start talking about the targeted industrial clusters
- 30:52Speaker 13: that we have here in metals, fabrication, and chemicals and
- 30:56Speaker 13: polymers and autoparts manufacturing, and start talking about the big
- 31:01Speaker 13: names of companies that are here. Well, all of a sudden,
- 31:03Speaker 13: people really start to sit up and take notice. Oh,
- 31:06Speaker 13: you're not that small rural place anymore. You're a place
- 31:11Speaker 13: that has a workforce with some pretty heavy hitters doing
- 31:15Speaker 13: business there. So the concept was that we need to
- 31:20Speaker 13: be promoting ourselves in that fashion as opposed to individual
- 31:24Speaker 13: communities going out there and trying to compete in a
- 31:28Speaker 13: global economy and not being able to get the recognition
- 31:31Speaker 13: that we really need.
- 31:32Speaker 6: And I think that's something maybe that's more common in
- 31:35Speaker 6: Appalachi or maybe southern states or whatever. Is the fact
- 31:38Speaker 6: that we think everything there's maybe some people have this
- 31:41Speaker 6: idea that things stop at the county line. We say,
- 31:44Speaker 6: what a friend of mine who used to work for
- 31:45Speaker 6: the Small Business Administration that said, West Virginia is the
- 31:48Speaker 6: only state that I know that really puts out the
- 31:51Speaker 6: county that often. He said, she said, most of the
- 31:53Speaker 6: people where I live don't even know what county they
- 31:56Speaker 6: live in. You know, it's just because and you think
- 31:58Speaker 6: about DC. How many and I know we're not DC
- 32:01Speaker 6: or New York when he stretch in the United Nation,
- 32:02Speaker 6: but how many people that work in d C live
- 32:05Speaker 6: in other areas, live in Maryland, live in West Virginia,
- 32:08Speaker 6: whatever in New York is the same way.
- 32:09Speaker 4: How many take the trains? And you know, so on
- 32:11Speaker 4: and so forth.
- 32:12Speaker 6: And I love Harrell the idea of the of the
- 32:15Speaker 6: regional economy. And they're and and thinking, as she said,
- 32:18Speaker 6: we got the universities and and and and and you
- 32:21Speaker 6: look at the things we've done in in the Charleston area.
- 32:24Speaker 6: Think about like the Shawnee Sports Complex, Uh, the things
- 32:27Speaker 6: that are going on with regatta now and so on
- 32:29Speaker 6: and so forth that impact that's what's good for Winfield
- 32:33Speaker 6: is good for Saint Albans and what's good for Charleston
- 32:36Speaker 6: is also good for South Charleston. And we have people
- 32:39Speaker 6: in these positions, the mayors and the city councils and
- 32:42Speaker 6: county commissions. I think that recognize that and and they're
- 32:46Speaker 6: then they're they're all trying to work together and not
- 32:48Speaker 6: against each other.
- 32:49Speaker 13: You're absolutely right. A good example of that was Commissioner Tenant.
- 32:53Speaker 13: Natalie Tenant from Kodak County came to the ribbon cutting
- 32:57Speaker 13: last Friday, and she and Commissioners skid More from Putnam
- 33:01Speaker 13: County had a really good conversation about how, yes, this
- 33:04Speaker 13: project is located in Putnam County, but there could potentially
- 33:07Speaker 13: be many people from Knnac County who live in Connac
- 33:10Speaker 13: County that are going to be working at that facility,
- 33:13Speaker 13: and so they recognize the cooperative nature of what we're
- 33:16Speaker 13: trying to do.
- 33:17Speaker 3: The other thing I'm really.
- 33:18Speaker 13: Proud of, you know, we have nine counties in our footprint,
- 33:22Speaker 13: and each county has their own economic development authority or
- 33:26Speaker 13: organization and we partner with them. They are they are
- 33:31Speaker 13: our best partners that we could possibly have, and when
- 33:35Speaker 13: we generate leads, we bring the leads to them and
- 33:38Speaker 13: you know, help. Hopefully they have facilities that they can
- 33:41Speaker 13: show to companies, or when they have a small business
- 33:43Speaker 13: person or an entrepreneur who's wanting to get started, they
- 33:48Speaker 13: refer them to us, to our entrepreneurship program, and we
- 33:51Speaker 13: actually have a business retention program where we help fund
- 33:55Speaker 13: their staff to work with existing businesses. So we have
- 33:58Speaker 13: this wonderful, symbiotic kind of relationship with those counties, and
- 34:03Speaker 13: what I'm seeing over time is that they are working
- 34:07Speaker 13: together so much. They are sharing ideas with each other.
- 34:11Speaker 13: When they have a business that needs to expand or
- 34:14Speaker 13: needs has a need, if they can't fulfill it in
- 34:17Speaker 13: their county, they will certainly talk to the counties in
- 34:20Speaker 13: the region and saying, hey, we want to make sure
- 34:22Speaker 13: this business stays here. What can we do to help them?
- 34:24Speaker 13: Do you guys have any resources to help? So I
- 34:28Speaker 13: see that relationship has grown and grown, and that's probably
- 34:31Speaker 13: one of the things that I am most proud of
- 34:34Speaker 13: is that collaboration that we've been able to foster in
- 34:37Speaker 13: the region to where we're all working sort of in
- 34:40Speaker 13: lockstep towards the same goals.
- 34:41Speaker 4: And I will put in a little plug here.
- 34:43Speaker 6: I know that several organizations will be coming together for
- 34:46Speaker 6: the State of the Valley at Valley Park in August.
- 34:51Speaker 6: They couldn't get anybody else to moderate that, so they
- 34:53Speaker 6: got me to do it.
- 34:54Speaker 3: So moderating, Yeah, that's a good choice.
- 34:56Speaker 6: I'll be moderating that event and we'll be giving you
- 34:58Speaker 6: more information about that. But this is an opportunity for
- 35:00Speaker 6: businesses to come together. And you've got organizations like yours,
- 35:04Speaker 6: You've got organizations like the in Charlestonair Alliance, and you
- 35:07Speaker 6: got the as you said, the different counties are coming together,
- 35:09Speaker 6: the regional chambers of commerce are coming together for the
- 35:11Speaker 6: savent at Valley Park in Hurricane and I'm excited to
- 35:14Speaker 6: be asked to moderate this and I'm looking forward to it.
- 35:17Speaker 6: And we'll give you more informations a week a little bit closer.

- 41:54Speaker 6: the show tomorrow. If you need a feel good story
- 42:02Speaker 6: in a time when all everyone wants to do is complain,
- 42:04Speaker 6: now let me just start and you know where I'm
- 42:07Speaker 6: going with this because we talked about it last week.
- 42:09Speaker 6: It was a tragic story and we don't want to
- 42:11Speaker 6: lose sight of the fact that this driver in the
- 42:14Speaker 6: semi truck in this accident last week lost his life
- 42:17Speaker 6: and so we thought some prayers go out to his
- 42:19Speaker 6: family and his loved ones. But if there was anything
- 42:22Speaker 6: good that came out of the story, I'm talking about
- 42:24Speaker 6: the dog named Hennessy. And you know again, this traffic
- 42:28Speaker 6: accident on I sixty four, the driver of the truck
- 42:31Speaker 6: tragically was killed. He had his dog with him, his
- 42:33Speaker 6: traveling companion. The truck was on fire, but some good
- 42:38Speaker 6: Samaritans couldn't do anything to help the driver, but they
- 42:41Speaker 6: were able to save the dog. Dog was scared and panic,
- 42:45Speaker 6: there was fire, his owner was deceased. You can imagine
- 42:49Speaker 6: that the truck driver was from Iowa, and thanks to
- 42:52Speaker 6: social media actually doing something good for once, the truck
- 42:57Speaker 6: driver's family were able to come to West Virginia to
- 42:59Speaker 6: pick up the dog yesterday. Now it does bring his
- 43:02Speaker 6: owner back, I get that, but Hennessy did get returned
- 43:05Speaker 6: with the family of the driver. I've got the video
- 43:08Speaker 6: of that reunion at the Animal shelter posted a Dave
- 43:10Speaker 6: Allen Radio on Facebook and also at Dave A seventy
- 43:14Speaker 6: on x. You can also see it as part of
- 43:16Speaker 6: a great story that Morgan Pemberton posted at wv metronews
- 43:19Speaker 6: dot com. It was a tragic story, but at least
- 43:22Speaker 6: one part of it was very good to see and
- 43:24Speaker 6: just as an animal person, just seeing that dog reunited
- 43:29Speaker 6: with his family, I mean it was and it's all.
- 43:32Speaker 6: You can go to the Kanaw Charles Newman Association Facebook
- 43:34Speaker 6: page you want to see it. As I said, it's
- 43:36Speaker 6: part of Morgan's storywv metronews dot com.
- 43:38Speaker 4: It's on my social media as well, just to.
- 43:41Speaker 6: See when the family member was setting on a picnic
- 43:44Speaker 6: table and the dog nervously walks in and sees these
- 43:49Speaker 6: are some of my people, and the dog goes nuts.
- 43:52Speaker 4: I mean, it is a very very tragic.
- 43:55Speaker 6: Story that the owner of the dog lost his life
- 43:57Speaker 6: the truck driver, but that part of it, I will say,
- 44:00Speaker 6: warm your heart. If you get a chance, go check
