- 1:07SPEAKER_00: But today we're going solo.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Solo with the one and only me, Kaelin Calhoun.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Let's go, shall we?
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: I've been thinking a lot about story, of course.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: I can't be stopped.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: And you know, I work with a lot of people on finding a way to really like put their story together.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: But the thing is, before you even put your story together, there are a lot of mindset things that people have to get over.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And so I'm coming at you today with five mindset swaps to move past resistance and share your story.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: We all have it when it comes to sharing our story.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Some very, very little, some a lot, but you know, it'll ebb and flow as well, right?
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Like some days you'll be like, and I'm just speaking from experience, some days you'll be like, yeah, this is gonna be so fun.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: I can't wait to share this with my people.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And other days you're like, I want to hide in a corner under a blanket.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: But in that situation, let's take a look at what are some of like stories that we're telling ourselves before we even tell our story.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: And and let's see some simple mindset swaps that can hopefully unlock you from those things.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: So to kick it off with number one, I would say this is probably the biggest, my story isn't special.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: So people will often tell themselves that their story is not special.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: And it's actually the everyday details that resonate the most with people, the intersection of those specific things about you that make it incredibly special as well, right?
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: So I want to give you an example in the case of a friend of mine reached out a couple weeks ago and he needed some advice about a very specific film he was making about women in the ultrarunning space.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: And so there's there's a collection of things.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: I have this intersection of being a filmmaker, a woman, and an ultrarunner.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: On some level, all of those things are not that unique.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Uh, maybe the ultrarunner one's a little bit specific, but but there's still like a lot of ultrarunners.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Once you start connecting with ultrarunners, you're like, okay, I'm not that special.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Other people have done this.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Same thing.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: There are so many women in the world.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Same thing.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: You can meet a filmmaker and then meet a bunch of filmmakers, and all of a sudden you feel like you're not unique.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: But in the case of this situation, this guy was like, I need someone to weigh in on the way I'm approaching this film.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Not only does Caitlin have the exercise as a filmmaker, the experience as a woman, and the tenacity of an ultra runner, but she's got all three.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: And so because over the years I have shared who I am and all those intersections, like I've become very special.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: No one is like you.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: You know, maybe there are similarities between you and someone else, but when it when you actually share your full story, the holistic picture, all of a sudden you become very, very special.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: And so, yeah, shake that away.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: It is the everyday details that resonate the most.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: So your story is special and don't forget it.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Which takes us to number two, procrastination station.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: The story is, I'll tell it later when I have more success, when I've got more gold, when I've got, you know, the body I want, when I've got the friends, this, that, and the other, when my network is stronger, what have you.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: But sharing now lets people grow with me and not just meet me at the finish line.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: So my example of this is this past summer.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: One of the solo episodes was called Slow Girl Summer.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: And it was wildly successful and beyond most of my podcast episodes because people were connecting with what I'm experiencing right now.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: It wasn't me being like, I'm slow and I've achieved enlightenment, right?
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: It was, it was the confession that like I have pushed myself too hard for too long and I needed to slow down.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: And what does that look like?
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: And the challenges I was facing around that and and where we could go with it.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: And so ultimately, sharing that piece, people would connect with it because they're in the messy middle as well.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: So sharing your messy middle, sharing things that let people grow with you not only allows them to feel seen as well, but also allows you to feel like your community is strengthening and it just really, really builds it like a wonderful, like a wonderful journey that you're having with your community.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: It's not like at the end I will be loved and I will be supported and yay.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: It's being supported along the way, it's building with people along the way.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: So sharing your story, even in in the gunky stuff, is is really, really important.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Hey y'all.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: You know I love telling stories, gathering stories, and finding a way to help people connect their story with the people that will get it.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: And that's what my story strategy sessions are all about.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: So over at Calhoun Creative Consulting, my strategic storytelling firm, we do one-on-one and or facilitated workshops in relation to really honing in the strategy around your story.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: It's a bit of messaging meets content creation, meets storytelling, and then how do we put that out in the world?
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: How do we show up regularly?
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: There's a bit of mindset work around it, right?
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: To actually tell your story, whether you're launching something new or trying to rework your brand or just feeling a little foggy on how to communicate with your people.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: This is how to get clear.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: We'll dig into things like your narrative, how to uncover what matters most, maybe map out a few content pillars while we're at it.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: You'll also get a recording of our session so you can revisit the conversation anytime you like.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Let's shape a story that actually feels like you.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: So book yours today.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: There is a link in the show notes.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: And hey, while you're at it, use the code podcast, all caps, podcast for 25% off your session.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: I would be honored to spend time with you and suss out your story.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Let's dive back into the episode, shall we?
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, so number three, people don't really care about my story.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: I could see where you could go down a rabbit hole with this one.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Maybe you just feel like you're repeating yourself.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Maybe, you know, you're like, who's actually gonna be paying attention?
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: But ultimately people crave connection.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: And story is the bridge.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: I I know I've spoken to y'all about this many a times, but I believe that story connects us and connection over time builds community.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: And story is firing those mirror neurons.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: If you're telling me something that you are experiencing and I've actually experienced it as well, the emotions, the thick of it, and I felt alone, and then I hear that you're doing it too, like all of a sudden I'm like, yeah, we are on the same page, and that's really special.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Another thing to address this people don't really care about my story mindset is if my story helps one person, it matters.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: So my example is at this point in my podcast, you know, we're a little over six months.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: I do not have that large of a listenership, and I am shocked at how often friends and family share with me that they love it and enjoy it and want more, and ultimately, like they're looking forward to it.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: They're looking forward to going back to, you know, number two, sharing that messy middle to see what's going on and they connect with you over that.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: And it's it's a really, really good thing.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: And then for number four, if I share my story, I'll lose control of the narrative, and it's in fact the absolute opposite.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: When you share your story, you take ownership of the narrative.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: I literally was talking to someone about this yesterday.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: It has come to my attention that people sometimes can see branding as like, what do people think of me?
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: But branding is absolutely the opposite, right?
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: You are you are putting your story forward.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: You are telling people who you are and who you want to be, and from that your brand comes.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Branding is not a passive act.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: It's not this is who I am and this is how people see me.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: It's this is who I want to be, this is who I am, this is how I want people to see me.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: And just shifting that ever so slightly, you realize that like sharing who you are and what you're up to actually just gives you so much power and so much ownership of who you are and who you want people to know you as.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: And then number five, last but not least, I don't want to seem self-centered.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: I can completely understand this one, right?
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm currently in the midst of posting once a day, giving people behind the scenes of like what it's like for me to be a nomadic business owner.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: And it's a little bit rough, it's a little bit cringy.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: It's I I'm like, okay, here we go, talking about myself again, sharing again, sharing again.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: And it it's not necessarily my most favorite thing.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Uh, but but ultimately, it's a fun, creative thing I get to do.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: The people that matter to me are seeing it, and nobody's seeing it that much as much as I'm consuming my own, my own sharing, right?
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: For the mindset shift on this one, if you're worried about seeming self-centered, tell yourself this.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: When I tell my story, I invite others to tell theirs.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: This creates a circle of connection.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: When you put yourself first, when you're vulnerable, it encourages others to share what they have going on.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: And how special is that that people could feel comfortable putting themselves out there.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: The reason I'm doing this like recurring series is because I've seen other people do it.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: I've seen other people be like day one of trying to rebuild my business, day one of trying to pivot my career, day one of, you know, trying to grow my community.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: And it's inspired me.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: And I would have hated if they were worried about seeming self-centered.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: They were worried about talking about themselves because ultimately them sharing inspired me to share.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: And so I always have to remind myself when I do this, it invites others to do the same.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: Even this podcast, I'm highlighting and lifting others up through this podcast, whether it be the solo slow girl summer episode, this episode, where we're talking through things, we're shifting, we're being a little bit more bold, or the stories of people that I love and and are really freaking awesome being shared.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: I'm inviting people into my community.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: It's when you're showing up as yourself, you allow for uh a really like genuine, lovely community to be built around you.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: And why would we want to take that away from anyone?
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: With that all being said, I'm gonna review the mindset swaps that you can make so you can take the idea that your story isn't special and remind yourself that the everyday details are the ones that resonate most.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: When you're procrastinating and trying to push off telling your story because you want to be more successful or more together, remember that sharing now lets people grow with you and not just meet you at the finish line.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Number three, when you're telling yourself people don't really care about your story, don't forget that people crave connection and story is the bridge.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Number four, if I share my story, I'll lose control of the narrative.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: It's in fact the opposite.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: You give yourself a lot of power and you're taking ownership of your narrative.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: You're building your brand.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: It's a beautiful thing.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: And then finally, number five, I don't want to seem self-centered.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: But actually telling your story invites others to share theirs.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: It's more inspirational than you realize.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Well, y'all, thank you so much for listening to today's episode.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: I really, really hope it was helpful.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Please let me know if there's any other mindset issues that you come across when you're leaning into your story or when you think about your story.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: I definitely think there's opportunity for a part two here.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: Obviously, there's not just like five universal uh mindset issues, right?
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: There's plenty more ways for people to get themselves all hung up before sharing their story.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: So please share with me what your issues are.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: I'd love to like take a look and we can rework them together.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: So I hope you all have a great week.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: I will see you on the flip side.
