- 0:29Speaker 1: Hello to one and all Wednesday, Hump Day Wednesday, September 23.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Tomorrow is my last day until my vacation.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Short timer.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Oh, so you are here tomorrow. Yeah, I am.
- 0:46Speaker 4: You have to mute somebody.
- 0:49Speaker 2: So that's you. Okay.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Hello.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Hello. Hello.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Hello.
- 0:52Speaker 2: You there? Yes, I'm busting your chops. There you go.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Fair enough. No, I had it down that you were
- 0:57Speaker 2: gone tomorrow. No, nope, nope, nope.
- 1:00Speaker 4: I'm here tomorrow.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Yay! One more day with you before you go see
- 1:04Speaker 2: the giraffes.
- 1:05Speaker 4: Yep, the giraffes. This is going to be very exciting.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Lindsay and I are starting our travel podcast from Africa.
- 1:13Speaker 1: We're going to have a great time. Everybody else has
- 1:16Speaker 1: a podcast, so we're putting ours together. It's just going
- 1:18Speaker 1: to be ridiculous.
- 1:18Speaker 2: I love the name.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Yeah, Excessive Baggage. is the name.
- 1:25Speaker 1: And it basically describes the podcast perfectly. And at Instagram, it's,
- 1:34Speaker 1: what is it? Excessive Baggage Podcast, I think it's.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:39Speaker 1: It's Excessive Baggage Podcast. And the website is excessivebaggage.com.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I think so.
- 1:50Speaker 4: I've got to check it out. How do I know
- 1:52Speaker 4: about this stuff?
- 1:53Speaker 2: Why don't you just have it written down in front
- 1:55Speaker 2: of you?
- 1:55Speaker 1: She was supposed to do that and it didn't happen.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I should have written it myself.
- 2:00Speaker 2: And what it means when he says we have a
- 2:03Speaker 2: podcast is that she's doing everything. Yeah, she is. It's
- 2:07Speaker 2: just fun. Well, your job is to promote it and
- 2:11Speaker 2: you're doing a horrible job of that. Yeah.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Basically, that's true. Anyway, good point.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Good point. Good morning to everybody. Neil, there you are. Kono. Hey, bud.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Will is there. Amy is there. Mm-hmm. Uh-huh. And with
- 2:26Speaker 2: her Padre... Hi. We got shut out last night. Boo. Oh,
- 2:30Speaker 2: that's lovely. Okay.
- 2:31Speaker 1: So how are the Padres doing?
- 2:34Speaker 2: One of the hottest teams towards the end of the season. Yeah.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Is it?
- 2:37Speaker 2: Just vying for a wild card right now. Oh, okay.
- 2:40Speaker 2: So they're still.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Still alive.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Dodgers already clinched.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Dodgers are clinched, yeah. Dodgers are considered the best team
- 2:50Speaker 1: in baseball right now, right?
- 2:51Speaker 3: As far as I'm concerned.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Well, no, as far as you're concerned, yeah. Look at
- 2:55Speaker 2: her lips. I've never seen them so perfect.
- 2:57Speaker 3: I know she's going to come in here and hit me.
- 2:58Speaker 2: No, I'm not saying anything. Yeah, but it was like
- 3:01Speaker 2: you were really not saying anything.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Hey, do I have it right?
- 3:06Speaker 1: I think you were doing the news, Amy. I just
- 3:10Speaker 1: checked in while I was reading some stuff. And a
- 3:13Speaker 1: new amusement park is being established today, Trumpland. If Dollywood
- 3:19Speaker 1: can happen, we certainly can have a Trumpland.
- 3:24Speaker 3: That was not on Wake Up Call, but Trump TV is.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Oh, I knew it was one of the two. Trump TV.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:31Speaker 1: That's going to be fun. I wonder how well that's
- 3:34Speaker 1: going to do. Initially, it will do very well. And
- 3:37Speaker 1: then we'll see. It's a lot of competition out there.
- 3:40Speaker 1: And do we know what's going to be broadcast on
- 3:42Speaker 1: Trump TV?
- 3:43Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Speeches. It's just like wall to wall. It's all Trump
- 3:48Speaker 3: all the time.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Oh, that's great.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:53Speaker 2: You're joking, right? No. It's like comedy? Uh-uh. It's real.
- 3:57Speaker 3: It's on YouTube.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Now, the question is, who is– they're going to follow
- 4:02Speaker 4: their own rating system.
- 4:06Speaker 2: I wish we could.
- 4:08Speaker 3: It's the Trump ratings.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:10Speaker 2: It's the Trump ratings.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:11Speaker 3: It's the– Biggest show ever on TV.
- 4:15Speaker 4: The best that's ever been.
- 4:16Speaker 3: The best. No one's ever seen anything like it.
- 4:19Speaker 4: And later on, I'm going to talk about what happened at.
- 4:24Speaker 2: The U.N.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Trump did exactly what he was going to do, exorciated
- 4:29Speaker 1: the U.N., says, I will decide basically what the world's
- 4:32Speaker 1: going to do, how it's going to do it. You
- 4:35Speaker 1: guys don't know what you're doing. And it was just
- 4:37Speaker 1: this wonderful, absolutely wonderful. And I think the president of
- 4:42Speaker 1: Iran speaks today in front of the U.N. That's going
- 4:46Speaker 1: to be fun. And tomorrow, Netanyahu is going to speak. Now,
- 4:53Speaker 1: attending it, I think Palestine, quote, is not a member
- 4:59Speaker 1: of the U.N., but I think is considered either an alternative,
- 5:04Speaker 1: like an alternative juror or an invited part of it.
- 5:09Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 5:09Speaker 4: But I think the Palestinian.
- 5:12Speaker 1: delegation, if you were, or the Palestinian who would be
- 5:15Speaker 1: a member is going to be in the room.
- 5:18Speaker 4: And I don't know where he or she is going
- 5:20Speaker 4: to sit.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I will know after the chair blows up and pieces
- 5:25Speaker 1: of the representative go flying all over the room.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Ah, that's where, okay, that's where he was sitting.
- 5:30Speaker 4: Thank you so much.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Do they have any she's in power?
- 5:34Speaker 4: No, I don't think so.
- 5:37Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 5:39Speaker 1: There was one Palestinian Hannah, whatever her name was, she
- 5:44Speaker 1: was the most well-known Palestinian representative.
- 5:49Speaker 4: And she spoke pretty good English.
- 5:51Speaker 1: And that seems to be one of the requirements to
- 5:54Speaker 1: get a lot of coverage, is speaking good English. Last night,
- 5:58Speaker 1: for example, you had David Muir interviewing Macron. Macron speaks
- 6:03Speaker 1: fabulous English. It just goes along. In the Arab world,
- 6:08Speaker 1: virtually no one speaks that kind of English. The 67 War,
- 6:12Speaker 1: I don't know if you remember it going back when
- 6:15Speaker 1: Israel basically doubled its footprint.
- 6:18Speaker 2: None of us were born. Okay.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Well, I was pretty young.
- 6:22Speaker 1: But anyway, Israel went to war in 67 and was
- 6:25Speaker 1: able to get Gaza, which already owned. But the Sinai,
- 6:30Speaker 1: the Golan Heights, the West Bank all went to Israel anyway.
- 6:35Speaker 1: The fight was at the UN, and the representative from Israel,
- 6:41Speaker 1: Abba Eban, who was the ambassador to the UN from Israel,
- 6:46Speaker 1: spoke with just— he sounded like an English Cambridge graduate, which
- 6:52Speaker 1: I think he was. I mean, that wonderful English upper-class accent.
- 6:59Speaker 1: And then you had the other side, the Arabs, where
- 7:03Speaker 1: English is not a big deal. So there's a real,
- 7:09Speaker 1: real discrepancy going on. You know who actually speaks a
- 7:12Speaker 1: decent English and understands English?
- 7:13Speaker 2: Putin. Putin actually does. You know who else did?
- 7:18Speaker 1: Castro actually had a pretty good English. Okay, a little
- 7:23Speaker 1: bit of a factoid there.
- 7:24Speaker 2: That's it. Just thought I'd share that with you. Okay,
- 7:27Speaker 2: are you guys ready to do it? We are.
- 7:32Speaker 4: It's time for Handle on the News on this Wednesday morning,
- 7:35Speaker 4: September 23rd.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Let's do it. Lead story.
- 7:41Speaker 1: So we have the latest poll for L.A. Mayor's race.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Councilperson Nithya Rabhan-Noodles has now taken a wide.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Lead over Karen Bass. Got to help us all. Either way.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Either way.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Karen Bass is she's actually losing this thing right now,
- 8:00Speaker 1: according to this new poll.
- 8:01Speaker 4: She's going south pretty quickly. And look at the choices
- 8:04Speaker 4: we have.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Yeah. Nithya Raman and Karen Bass and Karen Bass is
- 8:09Speaker 1: getting nailed on a couple of big issues. One, the
- 8:12Speaker 1: fires and how L.A. how she related to the fires.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Also homelessness, which she says, oh, we've taken care of it.
- 8:18Speaker 2: We're brilliant.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Everything is great.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Not so much. Nithya Raman will make the fires look
- 8:24Speaker 2: like just a campfire.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Okay, so I don't, you know, let me ask you,
- 8:29Speaker 1: you are amongst many. So what do you have against
- 8:33Speaker 1: Nithya Raman? Because I love those noodles.
- 8:37Speaker 4: What do you have against them?
- 8:38Speaker 2: I like Raman as well. I think that Nithya Raman
- 8:43Speaker 2: and her ilk are going to be the MAGA of
- 8:46Speaker 2: the left. And I think that We are going to
- 8:49Speaker 2: see the pendulum swing all the way to the other side.
- 8:53Speaker 2: And I think that it is a bit of a
- 8:55Speaker 2: Trojan horse to be coming in as a democratic socialist
- 8:58Speaker 2: when the reality is they're just socialists. The Democrat is
- 9:03Speaker 2: to soften the blow. And I know you don't think this,
- 9:06Speaker 2: but there are some things that are being said that
- 9:08Speaker 2: have more ties to communism than they do to democracy. Yeah.
- 9:14Speaker 4: And I don't I don't like that.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Well, I mean, to one extent, that governmental overview, governmental control,
- 9:21Speaker 1: if you will, of government, of of the private sector. Well, yeah,
- 9:25Speaker 1: the communists go way beyond that and say governmental ownership.
- 9:30Speaker 4: So I think you're right in terms of the pendulum.
- 9:32Speaker 2: I think what Trump did to the Republican Party is
- 9:35Speaker 2: what the DNA or the DSA, rather, is going to
- 9:42Speaker 2: do to Democrats. And I don't like the— I don't
- 9:46Speaker 2: like the polls. I don't like them going to the,
- 9:48Speaker 2: I don't like MAGA for going hard right, and I
- 9:51Speaker 2: won't like these folks for going hard left. I think
- 9:54Speaker 2: there's a lot of centrists that want us to get
- 9:56Speaker 2: back to the basics. Yeah, that's true.
- 9:58Speaker 1: We go back to 1972 when the far left ran
- 10:01Speaker 1: George McGovern as a Democrat and the primaries won, selected
- 10:07Speaker 1: as the Democratic nominee, and he ran against Richard Nixon.
- 10:12Speaker 2: And it was a close one. It was close.
- 10:15Speaker 4: I have to admit, Richard Nixon won 49 out of
- 10:16Speaker 4: 50 states.
- 10:18Speaker 1: In the electoral college, and it was the biggest wipeout
- 10:23Speaker 1: in the electoral college in the history of the United States.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Oh no, Donald Trump has the biggest wipeout because just
- 10:30Speaker 1: ask him and he got the biggest mandate in the
- 10:33Speaker 1: history of the United States.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Why not? Also, I think that she has been on
- 10:39Speaker 2: another side until now. I think she voted for more
- 10:44Speaker 2: money for cops and then says that she doesn't want
- 10:46Speaker 2: money for cops now. She... was one of the people
- 10:50Speaker 2: that harmed and did not have oversight over the homeless
- 10:54Speaker 2: money and now says she's going to do something with it.
- 10:56Speaker 2: So I don't see her as any different. I'd rather
- 10:58Speaker 2: have Bassett.
- 10:59Speaker 1: OK, let's continue on because we're going through these too
- 11:02Speaker 1: slowly at this point.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Well, he did it. He got Greenland. President Trump signed
- 11:08Speaker 3: an agreement with Denmark and Greenland, paving the way for
- 11:11Speaker 3: more U.S. bases on Greenland. The signing on the sidelines
- 11:16Speaker 3: of the U.N. General Assembly was Comes days after Trump
- 11:18Speaker 3: announced the deal to bolster U.S. military presence on Greenland,
- 11:22Speaker 3: but keep it under Danish control. It would still apply
- 11:25Speaker 3: if Greenland eventually chooses independence. Of course, he's been calling
- 11:31Speaker 3: for the U.S. to take over Greenland for years.
- 11:34Speaker 2: So, I mean, look at the win.
- 11:36Speaker 1: You know, as many bases as you want, which already
- 11:39Speaker 1: was part of the treaty with Greenland. There was no
- 11:41Speaker 1: limitation of the bases. And I think the big one
- 11:44Speaker 1: is there will be no other basis of any sort
- 11:47Speaker 1: from any country other than the United States. That is
- 11:51Speaker 1: a win as far as the United States is concerned
- 11:54Speaker 1: in that part of the world. But it's– you get
- 12:00Speaker 1: a little bit for a whole lot of bluster, but
- 12:03Speaker 1: the argument is– Is that what brought it to the table?
- 12:06Speaker 1: Was his threat to take over or buy Greenland? Is
- 12:10Speaker 1: that what put them is that what brought everybody to
- 12:12Speaker 1: the table?
- 12:13Speaker 4: OK, I don't know. I don't think so. But that's me.
- 12:15Speaker 2: All right. It's a basic rule. If it's not your party,
- 12:19Speaker 2: you don't get to invite who comes. So Trump was
- 12:23Speaker 2: very surprised to see at the U.N. that CNN was there.
- 12:31Speaker 2: So he walks in ready to tell everybody that he's
- 12:33Speaker 2: there and going to make everything better for the entire world.
- 12:38Speaker 2: And then he looks over and he sees Caitlin Collins
- 12:41Speaker 2: of CNN. She's there in the General Assembly or the
- 12:46Speaker 2: speech in the General Assembly. She's sitting there reporting on it.
- 12:50Speaker 2: And he says, I am surprised that CNN is here
- 12:54Speaker 2: covering me. You should not be here covering me. You
- 12:57Speaker 2: said you weren't going to cover me, which I don't
- 12:59Speaker 2: know if they said that or not. But it was
- 13:03Speaker 2: kind of funny because it's like, well, we're here for
- 13:06Speaker 2: the UN, sir.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:07Speaker 4: And the UN, they were credentialed by the UN.
- 13:10Speaker 1: But as the president says, he will tell the UN
- 13:14Speaker 1: who gets covered or not. I will decide for you
- 13:17Speaker 1: who gets credentialed. I mean, the guy has chutzpah. You
- 13:20Speaker 1: have to admit he has chutzpah. And there's a lawsuit
- 13:22Speaker 1: going on right now. And the argument that the Trump
- 13:26Speaker 1: administration is making is, Coverage credentialed of a White House
- 13:31Speaker 1: is a privilege, not a right.
- 13:34Speaker 2: And I get it's a privilege, but it's also a
- 13:37Speaker 2: constitutional right.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Well, and the issue is he can say no to
- 13:44Speaker 1: people who come in the White House. I mean, you
- 13:45Speaker 1: can't stop them for sitting out there on the sidewalk
- 13:47Speaker 1: and reporting. And they as a matter of fact, most
- 13:50Speaker 1: of them don't report at the time because there's a
- 13:53Speaker 1: rotating pool because there isn't enough room. And so there's
- 13:57Speaker 1: there's a First Amendment issue. And the other issue that
- 14:00Speaker 1: they're bringing up is national security. Because CNN reporting on
- 14:04Speaker 1: fake news affects the national security of the United States.
- 14:10Speaker 2: But he hasn't mentioned any particular story.
- 14:13Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 14:13Speaker 2: It's just fake news. Just fake news.
- 14:16Speaker 3: But in their filings overnight, they did file saying that
- 14:19Speaker 3: there were things that– I was talking to Steve Portnoy
- 14:23Speaker 3: about this. The bunker under the White House East Wing– Oh, shoot.
- 14:30Speaker 3: He gave like three examples of specific things that they're
- 14:33Speaker 3: saying by the way that they leaked the information or
- 14:36Speaker 3: reported the information, they threatened national security.
- 14:39Speaker 1: See, I don't buy that at all, because to say
- 14:42Speaker 1: there is a bunker underneath the White House, there already
- 14:45Speaker 1: is one.
- 14:45Speaker 4: The Situation Room in that area is in there.
- 14:49Speaker 1: And I don't buy that's national security for the United States,
- 14:53Speaker 1: people in the United States to know there is a bunker.
- 14:54Speaker 4: They were going to keep that top secret. There's no way.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:57Speaker 3: Oh, another one was the being low on weapons supplies.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Again, that is– the American people have a right to
- 15:04Speaker 1: know that. This is not top secret stuff. It wasn't
- 15:07Speaker 1: classified that we were low. It was the Pentagon that
- 15:10Speaker 1: released that information. But it's all national security. Everything is
- 15:14Speaker 1: national security. It's– You know, the new arc to triumph
- 15:19Speaker 1: that was ridiculous. Trump is now saying it's national security.
- 15:22Speaker 2: That's what that arch is all about.
- 15:24Speaker 3: He's going to put snipers on it.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Snipers on top. And it's going to be an ammunition dump.
- 15:28Speaker 1: And let's not forget the drones. I think I think
- 15:31Speaker 1: that's the Trump administration is going to lose big time
- 15:34Speaker 1: on that.
- 15:34Speaker 2: And they're in front of a judge who has already ruled.
- 15:38Speaker 4: The judge ruled in the Jim.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Acosta case that Acosta couldn't be thrown out of the
- 15:42Speaker 1: White House. And Trump has already said this is a wild, wacky,
- 15:47Speaker 1: radical judge, whatever he says.
- 15:49Speaker 2: A Trump appointee, by the way. Okay, moving on.
- 15:55Speaker 3: Fighting for his trust fund, Nick Reiner wants access to
- 15:59Speaker 3: his trust fund that was set up by the parents
- 16:02Speaker 3: that he's accused of killing. Reiner says he wants $ 558, 000.
- 16:05Speaker 3: The trust was supposed to disperse three years ago so
- 16:07Speaker 3: he can rehire.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Criminal defense attorney Alan Jackson to defend him. Right now
- 16:15Speaker 3: he's got a public defender. He says that any order
- 16:18Speaker 3: freezing him out of the trust funds would be unconstitutional
- 16:22Speaker 3: because it denies a presumed innocent man access to his
- 16:27Speaker 3: own untainted money until after a trial.
- 16:30Speaker 2: That's true, actually.
- 16:31Speaker 4: It's not money derived from his crime.
- 16:35Speaker 1: They quote a law, the prosecution quotes a law that
- 16:39Speaker 1: you cannot... benefit uh in any way from the crimes
- 16:44Speaker 1: for example selling the book that's the son of sam
- 16:46Speaker 1: law but his position he's right i haven't been convicted
- 16:49Speaker 1: of any crime as far.
- 16:51Speaker 4: As the system is concerned i'm innocent at this.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Point until proven the other way why can't i get
- 16:56Speaker 1: that money that was already to go to me and
- 17:00Speaker 1: it's not in any way tainted i i i think
- 17:02Speaker 1: he's got a good shot at it i think he's
- 17:04Speaker 1: going to win on that if i have to if
- 17:06Speaker 1: i guess.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Is it true your daughters are watching this case real
- 17:09Speaker 2: closely Very closely. One more. All right. Obamacare. The Trump
- 17:16Speaker 2: administration is halting enrollment in Obamacare and their health plans
- 17:20Speaker 2: right now for more than seven hundred and sixty thousand enrollees.
- 17:26Speaker 2: It believes we're fraudulently signed up. And you just had
- 17:30Speaker 2: the VP, J.D. Vance, this gosh, what was it yesterday?
- 17:35Speaker 2: Part of this anti-fraud effort yesterday. that estimated would save
- 17:39Speaker 2: $ 2. 2 billion in taxpayer money.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Yeah, now I have a question about that. And number one,
- 17:44Speaker 1: and it may be fraud. I don't think it's widespread fraud,
- 17:46Speaker 1: but of course they're going to be able to find
- 17:48Speaker 1: somebody who is defrauding the system.
- 17:49Speaker 2: That's a lot of people. A lot of people. I mean,
- 17:52Speaker 2: that's a lot of people.
- 17:53Speaker 1: And then the other question I have is, have you
- 17:56Speaker 1: noticed that there is a trillion dollar defense budget? There
- 18:02Speaker 1: isn't one iota of fraud there. Of all of the
- 18:06Speaker 1: trillion dollars that's being spent, there is no fraud. There
- 18:10Speaker 1: is no contractors committed fraud. There is no service provider
- 18:15Speaker 1: to the military that's committed fraud.
- 18:17Speaker 4: That's fraud free. Just thought I'd mention that.
- 18:23Speaker 3: A potentially explosive situation. Evacuation orders were issued in Laverne.
- 18:30Speaker 3: After a hazardous lithium-ion battery fire ignited at a metropolitan
- 18:35Speaker 3: water district of Southern California facility, Laverne Fire Chief Mark
- 18:41Speaker 3: Savage says there was a significant explosion when firefighters from
- 18:45Speaker 3: Laverne and L.A. County arrived at the Wheeler Avenue facility.
- 18:49Speaker 3: One person was hurt, taken to the hospital. The fire
- 18:52Speaker 3: started at a battery storage system near a solar panel
- 18:56Speaker 3: field on the northeast side of the facility.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Yeah, usually these stories about people on airplanes with the
- 19:03Speaker 1: lithium batteries in their laptops or their phones blowing up
- 19:08Speaker 1: and igniting. Which, by the way, did you know that
- 19:13Speaker 1: Jerry Lee Lewis, when he wrote a song, Great Balls
- 19:16Speaker 1: of Fire, he was thinking about that.
- 19:21Speaker 2: He was thinking about lithium ion? Yes, he was prescient.
- 19:24Speaker 4: He knew that was coming in the future.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Nostradamus, basically. Let's get Nostradamus. Okay, so let's look at
- 19:29Speaker 2: this for a second. The solar panels in Boyle Heights
- 19:33Speaker 2: could be at the core of the problems there. And
- 19:37Speaker 2: now a solar panel lithium ion. Man, we're going to
- 19:41Speaker 2: die because of all this green energy, Bill. Oh, thank you, Mr. Trump.
- 19:47Speaker 4: Uh it's killing us it is it's absolutely killing us
- 19:50Speaker 4: hey you know.
- 19:51Speaker 2: What else is is uh yes amy nothing okay that's
- 19:54Speaker 2: taking on shots princeton how how would you like to
- 19:58Speaker 2: go to princeton going hey we're uh number one and
- 20:01Speaker 2: then all of a sudden mid School year, you're no
- 20:04Speaker 2: longer number one. Princeton was top, atop the U.S. news
- 20:09Speaker 2: rankings for 15 years. Not anymore. It's now given way
- 20:15Speaker 2: to MIT. So MIT had top showings in the metrics
- 20:20Speaker 2: related to faculty research, their standardized testing, and scores among
- 20:27Speaker 2: incoming students, all these different things. How much students earned
- 20:30Speaker 2: after graduation. Yeah. Yeah, U.S.
- 20:33Speaker 1: News & World Report does this every year, and it
- 20:35Speaker 1: has a lot more influence. It's basically bragging rights, and
- 20:39Speaker 1: students want to go. Now, I was looking at the
- 20:42Speaker 1: list where Cal State Northridge is, and so let's turn
- 20:48Speaker 1: to page 47.
- 20:49Speaker 2: And it says at the very bottom of the page 47,
- 20:55Speaker 2: there's no way in hell it's going to be on
- 20:57Speaker 2: this list.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:58Speaker 3: But UCLA– And UC Berkeley are the top public schools.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:06Speaker 3: According to these new rankings.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Oh, no. UCLA and Berkeley, particularly Stanford, are world-class schools.
- 21:12Speaker 1: I mean, there's no question. Cal State Northridge. And we
- 21:17Speaker 1: went where, Amy? Oh, you went to Oregon.
- 21:19Speaker 2: That's right.
- 21:19Speaker 3: Oregon State.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Yeah, Oregon State. And Kono went to Cal State. I
- 21:24Speaker 1: think Fullerton or whatever.
- 21:25Speaker 2: I couldn't get into any of those schools, so it
- 21:27Speaker 2: doesn't matter.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Yeah, those are public schools and not quite in the
- 21:32Speaker 1: same league as Stanford and UCLA.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Yeah, but Stanford didn't even make the top 10 this year.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Which is really weird because Stanford is considered a true
- 21:40Speaker 1: Ivy League level school.
- 21:41Speaker 2: But all these schools are going south right now.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Berkeley isn't, Yale, Harvard. No, believe me, they're still there
- 21:49Speaker 1: and will always be there.
- 21:52Speaker 2: I disagree.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Okay.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Amy.
- 21:55Speaker 3: Not in full uniform. An ICE officer who shot a
- 21:59Speaker 3: man from Venezuela in Austin on Sunday, which left him
- 22:03Speaker 3: with a bullet lodged in his back, was issued a
- 22:06Speaker 3: body camera but wasn't wearing it when the shooting happened.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Officials are saying they're not quite sure why. Another ICE
- 22:13Speaker 3: officer who was in the same vehicle was wearing his
- 22:16Speaker 3: body cam. That footage does not include the moment of
- 22:20Speaker 3: the shooting. but it captured partial footage of what happened.
- 22:25Speaker 3: The guy is a DoorDash driver from Venezuela. He's 28
- 22:29Speaker 3: years old. He was shot early Sunday afternoon by an
- 22:31Speaker 3: ICE officer while he was making deliveries.
- 22:34Speaker 2: He's illegal.
- 22:37Speaker 1: And he was picked up, obviously arrested, and was about
- 22:41Speaker 1: to be deported when the court said, nope, we need
- 22:44Speaker 1: him as a material witness to the very shooting.
- 22:47Speaker 2: He's going no place.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Also, ICE will defend the shooter, will defend the shooting,
- 22:52Speaker 1: as always, because all of these shootings are in self-defense,
- 22:56Speaker 1: every one of them, if you look at what ICE says.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Okay. All right. You know, when you lose weight, Handle
- 23:06Speaker 2: just told me I'm still fat, by the way, off
- 23:08Speaker 2: the air. But when you lose weight, you want to...
- 23:11Speaker 2: How about this? How about this? On the air, you're
- 23:15Speaker 2: still fat. Is that helpful? All right. Thank you. And
- 23:17Speaker 2: you're still insecure and we're not loved by your parents.
- 23:20Speaker 2: The only thing about losing weight is you want to
- 23:23Speaker 2: be able to see that you lost the weight. And
- 23:26Speaker 2: some of these people aren't. They have eye strokes. And
- 23:29Speaker 2: this is based on a study now that is linking
- 23:34Speaker 2: some of the GLP-1s to this very rare NAION. I'm
- 23:40Speaker 2: not going to pronounce it, but it's an optic neuropathy.
- 23:43Speaker 2: And it causes this acute optic nerve injury in adults
- 23:49Speaker 2: over 50 that makes them lose sight in at least
- 23:54Speaker 2: one eye. And it's like an eye stroke. And these are.
- 23:59Speaker 2: You know, the companies we all know and hear about
- 24:03Speaker 2: all the time, they're under the look. You've got Ozempic
- 24:06Speaker 2: and Govee and Manjaro and Zepbound all under this, the
- 24:12Speaker 2: data that was received by Wall Street Journal.
- 24:17Speaker 1: There's no such thing as a new drug coming out
- 24:19Speaker 1: that doesn't have side effects. And it's just a question
- 24:22Speaker 1: of finding out who and where and suing.
- 24:25Speaker 2: And percentages. Exactly.
- 24:26Speaker 4: And suing the manufacturer.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Okay.
- 24:29Speaker 3: Even the feds aren't safe from hackers. The FBI investigating
- 24:32Speaker 3: an apparent breach of its network after a cyber criminal
- 24:36Speaker 3: group claimed to have stolen thousands of FBI agents' personal data.
- 24:42Speaker 3: The FBI says that it is aware of the claims
- 24:45Speaker 3: regarding the unauthorized activity affecting FBIjobs.gov.
- 24:52Speaker 1: It seems like there is no website that is not susceptible.
- 24:57Speaker 1: And I talk to Rich DeMuro all the time, and
- 25:00Speaker 1: he keeps on saying, Bill, you've got to change that password.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Bill1234 does not work. Well, at least you changed it
- 25:09Speaker 2: from Bildo. Oh, very nicely said. Okay. Oh. So you
- 25:15Speaker 2: know that Six Flags roller coaster we've talked about, the X2?
- 25:20Speaker 2: Long been this marquee attraction there at Six Flags Magic
- 25:23Speaker 2: Mountain in SoCal here off– off of the freeway there
- 25:27Speaker 2: in Valencia. And they're saying that 100 riders have now
- 25:32Speaker 2: come forward and alleged brain injuries from that roller coaster
- 25:36Speaker 2: following the CNN investigation. So pretty nuts. Well, it's quite
- 25:43Speaker 2: a roller coaster.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Rotating seats, really sharp drops, unpredictable movements so you.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Never know where you're going to go. Normal roller coasters.
- 25:53Speaker 2: But these are all tested. Like, they're tested digitally in,
- 25:57Speaker 2: you know, all kinds of modeling.
- 25:59Speaker 4: But here's what you do.
- 26:00Speaker 1: If you test people who already have brain injuries, you
- 26:05Speaker 1: absolutely can, you'll do okay. That made no sense. Thank
- 26:10Speaker 1: you very much. Okay, we continue on.
- 26:13Speaker 3: Typhus number two.
- 26:15Speaker 2: L.A.
- 26:16Speaker 3: County Department of Public Health says it's investigating another outbreak
- 26:20Speaker 3: of flea-borne typhus. This one is in the Wilshire Center area.
- 26:27Speaker 3: Seven cases have been identified. Six of the people had
- 26:30Speaker 3: to be treated at the hospital. Public Health says everybody
- 26:34Speaker 3: has recovered. Across the county, cases are on the rise.
- 26:37Speaker 3: 109 reported so far this year.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Here's some good news for Bill. Beginning in 2028, Californians
- 26:47Speaker 2: older than 80 will be able to opt out of
- 26:49Speaker 2: jury duty permanently without any documentation from a health care provider.
- 26:53Speaker 2: Good news for Bill. Thank you so much on that.
- 26:58Speaker 1: What?
- 27:00Speaker 2: Good news for Bill. 80 years old or older. Thank you. Congratulations, pal.
- 27:05Speaker 4: And you're still fat. So between the two of us,
- 27:08Speaker 4: it's working out, isn't it?
- 27:10Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, your wife's going to be back on the
- 27:12Speaker 2: market in a year or two. So you better shut
- 27:15Speaker 2: up or she's moving in with us. So that's good
- 27:19Speaker 2: news for you. Assembly Bill 1359, sir. Yeah. Unanimous support.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Now you can. And this is a weird story from
- 27:28Speaker 2: the L.A. Times.
- 27:30Speaker 1: If you're over 70, you were already able to excuse yourself.
- 27:33Speaker 1: from jury duty for medical reasons, oh, without documentation. So
- 27:37Speaker 1: all you have to do is say, I have medical reasons,
- 27:40Speaker 1: and I guess they accepted it. I've been called twice
- 27:42Speaker 1: to jury duty, and I got out of them both times.
- 27:45Speaker 2: And it's not easy to get out of jury duty.
- 27:47Speaker 2: They've heard your show.
- 27:49Speaker 1: That's exactly what the judge said when I said, I'm serious.
- 27:55Speaker 2: I tried to get out.
- 27:55Speaker 1: It was a misdemeanor hit and run with a Hispanic kid.
- 28:00Speaker 1: And I said to the judge, this kid is clearly illegal.
- 28:04Speaker 1: I know you can't ask him. He doesn't speak a
- 28:06Speaker 1: word of English. We both know he's illegal. And I'm
- 28:10Speaker 1: an officer of the court. And I'm going to nail
- 28:13Speaker 1: him just for being illegal. And it's not fair to
- 28:15Speaker 1: this kid to have me on the jury. And the
- 28:18Speaker 1: judge said, normally, I wouldn't accept that in a million
- 28:21Speaker 1: years because that seems like an excuse you made up.
- 28:24Speaker 2: However, Mr.
- 28:25Speaker 4: Handel, I listened to your show. He actually said that.
- 28:29Speaker 2: And realize you're racist. That's correct.
- 28:31Speaker 4: Well, not racist per se, but– all right, moving on.
- 28:35Speaker 3: Kid Rock apparently doesn't have quite the draw he used
- 28:38Speaker 3: to have. Patriots Day Freedom Fest, which is a conservative festival,
- 28:45Speaker 3: was canceled just days before it was supposed to happen
- 28:47Speaker 3: in northern Kentucky. Kid Rock was one of the scheduled speakers.
- 28:52Speaker 3: The festival's organizer, Eric Dieters, said only six VIP tickets
- 28:59Speaker 3: had been purchased. The concert or the festival's free. And
- 29:02Speaker 3: he thought he would make up his money by selling
- 29:04Speaker 3: all these VIP tickets. That didn't happen. So he canceled it.
- 29:07Speaker 3: And then he said he has no plans to revive
- 29:09Speaker 3: the festival that debuted in 2022, saying, I am never, ever, ever, ever,
- 29:14Speaker 3: ever doing this event.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Again, ever. Oh, OK. If you can't get enough fans
- 29:19Speaker 2: from Kentucky to go see Kid Rock, then.
- 29:23Speaker 3: I think they could get the fans. They couldn't get
- 29:24Speaker 3: people to pay.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:26Speaker 2: And it's hard.
- 29:26Speaker 1: I mean, people from Kentucky have a hard time driving
- 29:29Speaker 1: because their cars are on cinder blocks without wheels, without tires.
- 29:35Speaker 1: And they ran for the food booths. They ran out
- 29:38Speaker 1: of squirrels and potlucks. So there was going to be
- 29:41Speaker 1: a problem there.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Possum on a stick. Ooh, very strong. Deep fried. I'd
- 29:48Speaker 2: try it.
- 29:48Speaker 3: Deep fried squirrel.
- 29:49Speaker 2: Hey, the iconic Santa Monica pier sign that we've all seen,
- 29:52Speaker 2: you know that neon sign there? They're taking it down
- 29:55Speaker 2: for a while. It's 87-year-old bridge there. It connects the
- 29:58Speaker 2: pier to the city streets. They're going to remove that
- 30:01Speaker 2: because the city plans to give it all an overhaul
- 30:06Speaker 2: and replace the bridge. And then the sign will come back.
- 30:09Speaker 2: It's not being removed permanently or anything. Yeah, it's too iconic.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:13Speaker 2: It is way too iconic.
- 30:14Speaker 3: And I love where they're going to fix it. They're
- 30:16Speaker 3: going to fix it in Las Vegas. The home of neon, right?
- 30:20Speaker 2: That's probably the only place.
- 30:21Speaker 1: But when you think about it, where else are you
- 30:23Speaker 1: going to have a place that is so expert at
- 30:26Speaker 1: fixing neon signs other than Las Vegas?
- 30:28Speaker 2: They're the best.
- 30:29Speaker 1: There is a neon sign museum in Las Vegas. Oh, yeah.
- 30:35Speaker 2: That is wonderful.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Because old signs that were taken out of hotels and
- 30:40Speaker 1: casinos from decades ago have been repaired and they're there.
- 30:45Speaker 1: And at night, it is just really a thrill to
- 30:49Speaker 1: see it. And you got the neon, you're walking right
- 30:51Speaker 1: next to it. And, you know, the gonads start glowing blue. So,
- 30:57Speaker 1: you know, you know, you're near a sign.
- 30:58Speaker 2: Unfortunately, you don't have inert gas in you.
- 31:03Speaker 4: Okay, just real quickly, Lionel Richie's about to die.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Okay.
- 31:07Speaker 3: No, he's just taking some time off from touring. He
- 31:10Speaker 3: had a heart procedure done because he's got AFib. He
- 31:14Speaker 3: underwent the procedure. The representative for Richie said everything went perfectly.
- 31:19Speaker 3: He's doing great, but he's taking some time off and
- 31:21Speaker 3: will be back on stage soon. He's 77 and still touring.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it looks pretty good. It looks amazing.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Yeah, the work he's done actually turned out to be okay.
- 31:30Speaker 1: And usually, I don't know why they don't say it's
- 31:33Speaker 1: a pacemaker they put in because that's what they usually
- 31:35Speaker 1: do when you have this kind of a heart issue.
- 31:40Speaker 4: Anyway, heart fib.
- 31:42Speaker 2: OK, we're done, guys.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Coming up, Xi Jinping is meeting with the president. And
- 31:48Speaker 1: he last met with the president about 10 years ago
- 31:51Speaker 1: during the first term. Oh, man, have things changed. And
- 31:55Speaker 1: I'll share that with you when we come back. This
- 31:58Speaker 1: is KFI AM 640.
- 32:00Speaker 4: You've been listening to The Bill Handel Show.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Catch my show Monday through Friday, 6 a.m.
- 32:05Speaker 2: To 9 a.m.
- 32:06Speaker 4: And anytime on demand on the iHeartRadio app.
