- 0:05Speaker 1: Good morning. Welcome to a new week, and we want
- 0:09Speaker 1: to start it the best way possible with some time
- 0:13Speaker 1: spent with God reading the Bible. That's exactly what reading
- 0:18Speaker 1: the Bible is time spent with God, so long as
- 0:21Speaker 1: you come to it with your heart open to God, saying,
- 0:25Speaker 1: What do you have to say to me today? Because
- 0:27Speaker 1: God loves to speak to you through the Bible, through
- 0:31Speaker 1: His word that He's given us, to reveal Himself to us.
- 0:35Speaker 1: God is alive. He's actively involved in this world and
- 0:39Speaker 1: in your life, and He uses the Bible to help
- 0:43Speaker 1: you understand what He's saying to you, how He wants
- 0:47Speaker 1: you to react to the things going on in your
- 0:49Speaker 1: life right now. So let's start by reading a few
- 0:53Speaker 1: verses as we continue reading through the book of Hebrews.
- 0:58Speaker 1: We're in Hebrews chapter 10 today, and you'll remember that.
- 1:02Speaker 1: The writer of Hebrews is talking about the Old Testament
- 1:06Speaker 1: way of doing things and explaining how Jesus fits into that,
- 1:10Speaker 1: and he talks about the sacrifices that those priests in
- 1:14Speaker 1: the Old Testament used to offer every year to provide
- 1:19Speaker 1: forgiveness for the sins of the people.
- 1:22Speaker 1: The writer of Hebrews says, man, those things could never
- 1:26Speaker 1: actually deal with sin. How could, uh, the sacrifice of
- 1:30Speaker 1: a goat or a cow really deal with the sins
- 1:34Speaker 1: of people? They were just pointing forward to what would
- 1:38Speaker 1: come when Jesus died on the cross in our place,
- 1:42Speaker 1: so that those people could understand God was making a provision.
- 1:46Speaker 1: A sacrifice that would take the place of them, and
- 1:51Speaker 1: God would judge that sacrifice, and they would go free.
- 1:56Speaker 1: In Hebrews chapter 10 verse 3, the writer says, But
- 1:59Speaker 1: in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year,
- 2:05Speaker 1: for it's impossible for the blood of bulls and goats
- 2:09Speaker 1: to take away sins. And then he talks a bit
- 2:12Speaker 1: about how those are pointing really to the death of
- 2:16Speaker 1: Jesus Christ.
- 2:17Speaker 1: And in verse 11 he says, and every priest stands
- 2:22Speaker 1: daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices which
- 2:28Speaker 1: can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered
- 2:33Speaker 1: for all time a single sacrifice for sins.
- 2:39Speaker 1: He sat down at the right hand of God, waiting
- 2:44Speaker 1: from that time until his enemies should be made a
- 2:48Speaker 1: footstool for his feet, for by a single offering he
- 2:53Speaker 1: has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us. For
- 3:04Speaker 1: after saying, This is the covenant I will make with
- 3:07Speaker 1: them after those days, declares the Lord, I will put
- 3:10Speaker 1: my laws on their hearts and write them on their minds.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Then he adds, I will remember their sins and their
- 3:19Speaker 1: lawless deeds no more.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer
- 3:28Speaker 1: any offering for sin. Now this is such a beautiful
- 3:33Speaker 1: truth given to us in the Bible.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Jesus died on the cross. He took our place. His
- 3:41Speaker 1: offering has removed God's anger towards us. It's dealt with
- 3:45Speaker 1: our guilt. We're forgiven.
- 3:47Speaker 1: And that is once for all by a single offering
- 3:52Speaker 1: he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
- 3:57Speaker 1: So being sanctified, our ongoing daily life becoming more like Jesus, yes,
- 4:04Speaker 1: that's an ongoing thing. Every day we grow a little
- 4:07Speaker 1: more in our ability to live the way God wants
- 4:10Speaker 1: us to live, but
- 4:13Speaker 1: In terms of our forgiveness, in terms of our being
- 4:17Speaker 1: made right with God, there's nothing to add to what
- 4:21Speaker 1: Jesus has done for us. For all time. He has
- 4:25Speaker 1: perfected those who are being sanctified for all time by
- 4:31Speaker 1: one offering.
- 4:32Speaker 1: And that was his death on the cross. As you
- 4:34Speaker 1: head into this week, just head into it with this
- 4:38Speaker 1: confidence that if you are a child of God, if
- 4:42Speaker 1: you have put your trust in what Jesus did for
- 4:45Speaker 1: you at the cross and invited God to come into
- 4:49Speaker 1: your life and make it what He wants, He will
- 4:51Speaker 1: over time continue to make it what He wants, but
- 4:55Speaker 1: rest in this.
- 4:57Speaker 1: The penalty has been paid. You have been forgiven. You
- 5:02Speaker 1: have a relationship with God as His child that can
- 5:06Speaker 1: never be taken away.
- 5:08Speaker 1: I'm John North.
