- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Author and teacher Parker Palmer wrote a profound little book called Let Your Life Speak.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: In the book, he writes this Before I can tell my life what I want to do with it, I must listen to my life, telling me who I am.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: But what does it mean to listen to your life?
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Well, it means paying attention to the signposts telling you where you should go.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: You know, it's amazing how often we don't see the signs right in front of us.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: These signs can take different shapes, such as what your gut is telling you, what you're passionate about, and where you're having success in your life.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: And all those things are indicators of what you should be doing with your life.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: But one of the most important signs comes from other people.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Are there people in your life who have encouraged you in your writing?
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Perhaps teachers, parents, or friends?
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: If so, that's a sure sign that you need to lean into writing.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: But if you haven't had people encourage you, no worries.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: It might be that you simply have not written and shared your writing with enough other people for them to validate you and affirm you in your giftedness.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Or maybe you've had the unfortunate luck of having people be critical and dismissive of your writing.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: If so, understand this.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Anyone who criticizes you without a loving spirit is doing so with a completely wrong kind of attitude.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: They're just not being helpful.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Most of the time when people are critical, it's because they're jealous and they've had a lack of affirmation in their own life.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: As the saying goes, hurting people hurt people.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: So watch out for signposts, especially from the people around you.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Listen to the ones who encourage you and validate you and affirm your writing.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: They are the ones who are pointing you in the right direction.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
