- 1:28Speaker 2: we'll have Devin Cooper, the head football coach, coming up
- 1:30Speaker 2: here in about an hour right now. KK Aldridge, he
- 1:33Speaker 2: is the head baseball coach of the Cougars. Coach Audridge,
- 1:36Speaker 2: always great to see you, brother.
- 1:37Speaker 1: How you doing all right?
- 1:38Speaker 3: Boom Well, Jake, Appreciate you coming out, Appreciate you taking
- 1:41Speaker 3: time to stop by Northwest and highlighting our student athletes.
- 1:44Speaker 3: It's just a good way to showcase these guys here
- 1:48Speaker 3: that are on campus.
- 1:49Speaker 2: We aren't glad to be here. So let's talk some baseball.
- 1:52Speaker 2: It's one of those sports that never ends, right, it
- 1:55Speaker 2: never ends. As you know, we were talking I was
- 1:58Speaker 2: talking with I believe it was doctor McEwan about this.
- 2:03Speaker 2: We were talking social media and schools and how you know,
- 2:05Speaker 2: you guys have that element to you know, kind of
- 2:08Speaker 2: navigating I don't know if you saw the Little League
- 2:10Speaker 2: World Series going on now, and one of the teams,
- 2:13Speaker 2: I think it's one of the teams from New York,
- 2:14Speaker 2: was talking about they attributed some of their success to
- 2:17Speaker 2: when their guys get to the field and it's typically
- 2:20Speaker 2: a five hour pre game whatever they're doing, you know,
- 2:23Speaker 2: kind of get ready for the game, they have to
- 2:24Speaker 2: put all their phones in a bucket and they can't
- 2:26Speaker 2: touch it, and they said, we feel like that's really
- 2:28Speaker 2: allowed us to kind of, you know, regain some focus
- 2:32Speaker 2: on the team. How do you guys handle social media phones.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Well, I think you have to balance it out because
- 2:38Speaker 3: you know, social media, to these guys, it's kind of
- 2:40Speaker 3: like whenever we were playing back in the day, we
- 2:42Speaker 3: wanted to see our name in the paper with that
- 2:44Speaker 3: OTV beside it or something like that. So social media
- 2:46Speaker 3: has to be there to highlight your cause and stuff
- 2:48Speaker 3: like that. And fortunately for us, we have Nathan Parvis
- 2:52Speaker 3: on staff who does a phenomenal job at highlighting our
- 2:55Speaker 3: baseball athletes and our athletes across the board here at
- 2:58Speaker 3: Northwest Rank. And but you know, you have to be
- 3:01Speaker 3: able to use the social media to build your platform,
- 3:03Speaker 3: to build your brand, and and I think we've we've
- 3:06Speaker 3: done a very good job of that. But at the
- 3:08Speaker 3: same time, there's so much information now with the hands
- 3:11Speaker 3: of these players that I feel like in some ways
- 3:15Speaker 3: they get caught up in analyzing so many things and
- 3:19Speaker 3: all the tools that are out there. There's always a
- 3:21Speaker 3: new gadget that can help you with your swing or
- 3:23Speaker 3: or some way to hey, if you do this, this
- 3:26Speaker 3: is going to get you to the next level. And
- 3:28Speaker 3: sometimes it causes the players to to skip out on
- 3:31Speaker 3: the element of fun and just having fun playing the
- 3:33Speaker 3: game of baseball. And uh so sometimes you want to
- 3:36Speaker 3: just like take those phones put away and just guys,
- 3:39Speaker 3: let's go out here, get after it. Let's let's give
- 3:41Speaker 3: it all we got. Let's let's control what we can control.
- 3:44Speaker 3: And you know, if the good, if the good Lord's willing,
- 3:47Speaker 3: you're going to reach your potential. And you know, that's
- 3:49Speaker 3: the message that we try to push. And you know,
- 3:51Speaker 3: we we have great families in our program. They've done
- 3:55Speaker 3: a great job raising quality young men and uh we
- 3:57Speaker 3: just try to help them, uh bring them together, put
- 4:00Speaker 3: them out there on the field, let them showcase their
- 4:02Speaker 3: talents and help them become the best person that they
- 4:04Speaker 3: can be.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Kk Audridge head but baseball coach here at Northwest frank
- 4:07Speaker 2: And Tuesday edition year program. Yeah, I was talking with
- 4:10Speaker 2: a coach last year baseball coach. It was it was
- 4:13Speaker 2: on air and we he was in studio and we
- 4:15Speaker 2: were talking about he said, you know, there's as you
- 4:18Speaker 2: know this baseball's got the most acronyms. They've got the
- 4:20Speaker 2: most you know data. I mean, it's a data driven sport.
- 4:23Speaker 2: And he said it. You know, we get parents and
- 4:25Speaker 2: people come to us and talking about blow and talking
- 4:27Speaker 2: about this stat and that stat and that. It's like,
- 4:30Speaker 2: let's slow it down, like we've almost overcome. Yes, I'm
- 4:34Speaker 2: sure all of those matter to some degree of a
- 4:36Speaker 2: level of you know, just you know, kind of importance,
- 4:38Speaker 2: but let's slow it down and let's focus.
- 4:40Speaker 1: On the basics. Yeah.
- 4:41Speaker 3: I mean, like you're saying, there's a time and place
- 4:43Speaker 3: for all of that. But you know, teaching a young
- 4:48Speaker 3: kid that's thirteen and fourteen a launch angle, well, what
- 4:51Speaker 3: are you really setting him up for? You might be
- 4:53Speaker 3: setting him up for hitting a fly out and then
- 4:55Speaker 3: not successful for his program. And so you just have
- 4:58Speaker 3: to look at that and kind of take it day
- 5:02Speaker 3: by day and just let them kind of gear everything
- 5:06Speaker 3: towards the level that they're at and not try to
- 5:09Speaker 3: rush the process. And I think, you know, you hear
- 5:11Speaker 3: all the time about you know, Nick Saban and why
- 5:14Speaker 3: he was so great. It was always trust the process,
- 5:16Speaker 3: Trust the process, and that's what I think, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 3: players have to be able to do. I got finished
- 5:21Speaker 3: talking with our guys today. You know, it was neat
- 5:24Speaker 3: Nick Monastery called and left a voice message about some
- 5:27Speaker 3: things that they're doing. And some of the things that
- 5:30Speaker 3: he was talking about was just the extra work that
- 5:32Speaker 3: they put in and the things that he realized that
- 5:36Speaker 3: maybe later on he wishes he would have done at
- 5:38Speaker 3: an earlier age, such as the nutritional part, such as
- 5:42Speaker 3: the speed and agility stuff, stuff that actually, you know,
- 5:45Speaker 3: will make a difference in their performance and help them
- 5:49Speaker 3: reach their their level. But a lot of times, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 3: the players when they're thirteen, fourteen, fifty even you know,
- 5:55Speaker 3: you know in high school, they're not paying attention to
- 5:57Speaker 3: those things, right, And so that's one part of it
- 5:59Speaker 3: that you know, we're trying to see how we can
- 6:01Speaker 3: improve just as a baseball team, a baseball program. How
- 6:04Speaker 3: can we help those guys look at those things and
- 6:08Speaker 3: make themselves a complete player by taking not only control
- 6:11Speaker 3: of their attributes as a player, but also their physical strength,
- 6:16Speaker 3: what they eat, what goes in their bodies, what they
- 6:18Speaker 3: think about those types of things as well.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and you're right, I mean that's things that you
- 6:23Speaker 2: know twenty five thirty years ago, maybe even ten years ago.
- 6:26Speaker 2: I mean, yes, there's always been an importance on nutrition,
- 6:28Speaker 2: but just what you said, I mean, you're seeing in
- 6:31Speaker 2: all sports at an earlier age, people trying to pay
- 6:35Speaker 2: attention more to diet and exercise and you know, not
- 6:37Speaker 2: just exercise about their playing, but you know, calistenics, stretching,
- 6:42Speaker 2: you know, prehab, rehab, I mean, all that, everything that
- 6:46Speaker 2: goes into it. You're seeing that happen at all sports
- 6:48Speaker 2: at a younger age.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Now, yeah, absolutely, I mean that's just you put that
- 6:52Speaker 3: into your programs. I mean, we just got finished so
- 6:55Speaker 3: hot out here with the temperatures and stuff like that,
- 6:57Speaker 3: we're having to be careful with what we do and
- 7:00Speaker 3: can't get outside all the time whenever we want to,
- 7:03Speaker 3: and so we're in the weight room a good bit
- 7:05Speaker 3: and so just sitting down, stretching, doing those type of things,
- 7:09Speaker 3: just to try to get our bodies to where they're
- 7:11Speaker 3: ready to go whenever the season gets here.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Tell us about this group of Cougar's coming up. I
- 7:16Speaker 2: know you've probably got some guys that are gonna be
- 7:17Speaker 2: playing some other sports, but baseball is a competitive is
- 7:21Speaker 2: any sport? Right here on this campus, you guys have
- 7:23Speaker 2: one of the best programs in the State. Talk a
- 7:25Speaker 2: little bit about this group of Cougar's coming through.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Yeah, very excited about this upcoming season. You know, we
- 7:30Speaker 3: had some success last year, just didn't finish it out
- 7:33Speaker 3: the way that we would like to have. But we
- 7:36Speaker 3: have some guys that are coming back in integral parts.
- 7:39Speaker 3: One one guy, Jack Page on the mound, the Southern
- 7:41Speaker 3: miscommit he's gonna be really big for us this year.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Then we have John Merylmore at shortstop. Kim Thompson was
- 7:48Speaker 3: our third basement last year kind of hitting a three
- 7:50Speaker 3: hole four, so he's back as well. Of course, Gavin
- 7:53Speaker 3: Phillipson starting quarterback. He's he's gonna be running around in
- 7:58Speaker 3: center field, does a really good job of roll in
- 8:00Speaker 3: the outfield force. And so then we have some other
- 8:02Speaker 3: seniors that are ready to go, and also some juniors
- 8:06Speaker 3: and and and some sophomores too that are are ready
- 8:09Speaker 3: to push some guys to win some positions. And so
- 8:11Speaker 3: we're gonna get out there and find out who the
- 8:12Speaker 3: best are and put them out there and know that
- 8:14Speaker 3: we can compete against anybody.
- 8:16Speaker 2: You know, seven A is so competitive. We were talking
- 8:19Speaker 2: off the air about pedal and and this is no
- 8:21Speaker 2: disrespect to Pedal wonderful baseball program. Come out of the
- 8:24Speaker 2: four hole or you know, four slot in Region three
- 8:27Speaker 2: with you guys and Brandon and Oak Grove and then
- 8:30Speaker 2: I mean just went on a run. We've seen you
- 8:32Speaker 2: guys do that brand.
- 8:33Speaker 1: It's done that.
- 8:34Speaker 2: I mean, we've seen other teams. I think that just
- 8:36Speaker 2: goes to the level and the depth of how good
- 8:38Speaker 2: baseball is in the state.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so. But it's also it's just playing
- 8:42Speaker 3: right at the right time.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:43Speaker 3: And you know that's a sports cliche, but that's what
- 8:46Speaker 3: it boils down to a lot of times. And you
- 8:48Speaker 3: don't ever want to necessarily start off your best. Uh,
- 8:50Speaker 3: you don't want to peak too early. And what you
- 8:52Speaker 3: want to do is be playing your best baseball whenever
- 8:54Speaker 3: the playoff time rolls around. And give credit to Pedal
- 8:57Speaker 3: last year, that's what they were doing well.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Coach, thank you so much for jump in. I know
- 9:00Speaker 2: it's hot out here, but thank you for making time
- 9:02Speaker 2: with us today.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Absolutely, thanks you. Thanks for having me.
