- 0:15Kearns: Funny about child abductions,
- 0:19Ryan: Uh, well, I mean in some, videos, you know, you donate $2
- 0:25and two go free, maybe even more.
- 0:29You have never seen those, those videos.
- 0:30It's like a prank video.
- 0:31Kearns: Yes, I have
- 0:34Ryan: Would you like to donate money to save children?
- 0:36Yeah, I'll donate a dollar.
- 0:38All right.
- 0:38Come around.
- 0:39Come around one child.
- 0:40Kearns: child.
- 0:40What child
- 0:41Ryan: These people are perplexed.
- 0:43Kearns: The one with the computer where it's arguing with the guy and calling him
- 0:45a piece of shit because he's not doing it.
- 0:49Ryan: No.
- 0:49Kearns: So it's like, uh, would you like to donate a dollar to save?
- 0:53And it's, I think the dogs or something and he is like, skip.
- 0:56And it's like, so you would like for dogs to die?
- 0:58And then it just continues until it makes him feel horrible about
- 1:02himself and it keeps upping the ante.
- 1:03It's really funny.
- 1:05Ryan: Oh, I saw that one.
- 1:06I know what one you're talking about.
- 1:07Kearns: but this week everybody we're talking about the black phone.
- 1:14Jon: Yeah, buddy.
- 1:15Ryan: Really good movie.
- 1:16Kearns: Allegedly.
- 1:17Ryan: good movie.
- 1:24Jon: It exceeded my expectations.
- 1:26Kearns: I loved the appeal of it right from the get go too.
- 1:29The baseball game in the beginning, the aesthetic.
- 1:32They do a really good job of getting into the
- 1:33Ryan: Yes,
- 1:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:36How, how little League Fields looked before they became big business.
- 1:41Kearns: field.
- 1:43Jon: Just a pat.
- 1:44Ryan: Gimme
- 1:44Jon: Yeah.
- 1:45Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:47Jon: Yeah.
- 1:48It very much like the Dazed and Confused baseball game
- 1:51very much in that, that field.
- 1:54Kearns: Just dirt, grass and a couple of bags, well, hopefully
- 1:58three bags and a plate.
- 1:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 2:00Kearns: it.
- 2:00Rusty fences
- 2:01Jon: Yeah.
- 2:02we threw these fences around here to, you know,
- 2:05Kearns: mostly
- 2:06Jon: some sort of structure and that's it.
- 2:08Kearns: Doesn't work all the time.
- 2:10Jon: Yeah.
- 2:10Kearns: like that.
- 2:12they do a great job too of setting up the abduction in the beginning as well.
- 2:16The tone of the movie shifts dramatically from that point, obviously.
- 2:20Well, it kind of shifts back, but to a different area.
- 2:22But um, gripping and I, you've heard me complain about going the
- 2:28angle with kids, but obviously this movie is a lot more than that.
- 2:32Ryan: Oh yeah.
- 2:33Kearns: which it
- 2:34Ryan: Yeah.
- 2:34Jon: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:36They spend a lot of time with kidnappings, abductions that are not the main
- 2:43one, and then they make, that work.
- 2:46Ryan: it's a slow belt.
- 2:48Kearns: which is great
- 2:49Ryan: It's a very
- 2:49Jon: Yeah.
- 2:50Kearns: was.
- 2:52Ryan: Yes, it was.
- 2:53Jon: This was.
- 2:54it was
- 2:55based on a Joe Hill story,
- 2:56Ryan: okay.
- 2:57Jon: you know, you know Yep.
- 2:59you're getting Joe Hill and a little bit, bit of his dad mixed in there.
- 3:02Kearns: is, is of his father's, you know, framework of not being afraid
- 3:08to write a beginning that is long.
- 3:11So he builds the world, even though it's a world we know of, he builds it anyway, and
- 3:16I don't have a problem with that either.
- 3:18not gonna get into my opinion of Joe Hill's writing at large, but,
- 3:22isn't necessarily bad, it's just like, it's so similar to Stephen
- 3:25King's that I can't help but compare it and that it's a problem for me.
- 3:31Ryan: Okay.
- 3:31Kearns: he's a great writer.
- 3:32Joe Hill's a great writer, like full stop,
- 3:35Jon: I haven't read a lot, but what I've read, I've enjoyed.
- 3:39Kearns: I've never hated it.
- 3:42His work, and I've never been thrilled with it either.
- 3:45It's always kind of like a solid 78 out of a hundred sort of thing.
- 3:49he's, he's always in that right there.
- 3:51And I'm, there are people who love him and great, like, I
- 3:55love that you love Joe Hill.
- 3:57I think he's a good, not a good, great writer.
- 3:59but it's that relationship.
- 4:01writing is so similar to his dad's.
- 4:03It's really hard for me and it's got some, some stuff shaved off that's
- 4:08very king and that I love about King.
- 4:10So, but yeah, this isn't an episode about all that.
- 4:14So I'm gonna, I'm gonna stop myself,
- 4:17Jon: No, but you know what, it sort of ties into something I
- 4:20felt about this movie too, going in is the Blumhouse aspect.
- 4:25That this is a Blumhouse production.
- 4:27And you know, Blumhouse has made good movies.
- 4:31They've made very popular movies, but mostly they have made movies that.
- 4:37Aren't necessarily for me.
- 4:39Ryan: agree with that.
- 4:40I can see your standpoint from there.
- 4:42Because they try to go like this indie route and they get it, but it's like
- 4:49very saturated with a lot of money
- 4:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:52Ryan: it loses that appeal, but
- 4:56Jon: And a lot, a lot of sequels.
- 4:57Everything they do has a sequel.
- 5:00Like, you know, you have the purges, sinister, um, insidious,
- 5:07the Ho the Halloween reboot.
- 5:10Yeah.
- 5:10There's a sinister too.
- 5:11Kearns: know.
- 5:12Ryan: Yeah.
- 5:12Kearns: sinister, so that
- 5:13Jon: Yep.
- 5:13Kearns: of makes me sad because it had the perfect ending for that movie.
- 5:17Kim and I sat in the
- 5:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:19Mm-hmm.
- 5:20Kearns: lot under like a streetlight, just like, sort of like Jesus Christ,
- 5:26after we saw that movie.
- 5:28So that's a good, that's well done right there.
- 5:32So I could, I could see that.
- 5:33I love when you two
- 5:34Jon: Yeah.
- 5:35Kearns: like this about, uh, specific studios and their
- 5:37idiosyncrasies, by the way.
- 5:39'cause nobody
- 5:40Ryan: Yeah.
- 5:40Kearns: you guys.
- 5:41Jon: I mean, again, Blumhouse is good.
- 5:44They do good stuff.
- 5:46It's just they do stuff.
- 5:49I don't even want to say it's for like horror noobs.
- 5:52I think it's just, it's, there's a gloss to most of their stuff
- 5:56that doesn't appeal to me.
- 5:57I like mostly grittier things.
- 6:01Ryan: fair.
- 6:01Kearns: Guys, this is a podcast episode about things we think are average
- 6:08mid to
- 6:09Jon: It's mid.
- 6:10Kearns: We're almost midway to 100 episodes too.
- 6:14This is technically episode 41
- 6:17Ryan: Ooh.
- 6:17Kearns: when it comes out.
- 6:19And yeah, so we're getting close.
- 6:22Ryan: 42 42,
- 6:25Jon: I love, I love, I love that our episode numbers are either
- 6:29this number or that number.
- 6:31Ryan: the map.
- 6:32Kearns: a, but I did fix that in Podbean.
- 6:35If you're a Podbean listener, it is listed under in the URLI just made it
- 6:3940 dash zero, the latest episode saw.
- 6:43So now it'll be back on to, this one will be 42, and the one that comes
- 6:47out the week prior will have been 41.
- 6:52Ryan: Yeah.
- 6:52So
- 6:55Jon: I hope you enjoyed Motel Hell.
- 6:57So
- 6:58Kearns: You
- 6:58Jon: you guys wanna play a game.
- 7:02It's a simple blind drag tonight.
- 7:04No surprise to it.
- 7:05'cause you're all gonna know.
- 7:06Both gonna know what it is.
- 7:07As soon as you see the first picture, it's blind Rank some horror villain masks.
- 7:12Ryan: I was kind of, I was getting ready for another, um, what do you call it?
- 7:16Um, the villain.
- 7:17Guess.
- 7:17The villain.
- 7:20Jon: I was
- 7:20Kearns: guy?
- 7:21Jon: thinking about it, but there's your first.
- 7:22Kearns: do, we have to rank the Jason Voorhees hockey mask first.
- 7:27Ryan: Ooh.
- 7:29Jon: He's the, he's your first villain.
- 7:32Kearns: So
- 7:32Jon: Rank the mask.
- 7:33You have five masks to
- 7:36Kearns: abilities.
- 7:37Ryan: is hard.
- 7:37Kearns: help your way here, buddy.
- 7:38'cause I I don't think you need it though.
- 7:40He's going to think of all of his favorite masks ahead of time and pre
- 7:44Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 7:45Kearns: Yeah.
- 7:47Ryan: But I feel like John's gonna like throw some things and I'm like,
- 7:51Kearns: screen mask is
- 7:52Ryan: uh
- 7:52Kearns: five.
- 7:55Ryan: uh mm mm. I'm gonna rank number two for Jason, just saying
- 8:02Jon: thank you for Jason
- 8:04Kearns: opinion.
- 8:05I'm gonna put him at four.
- 8:08I know you can kick my ass when you see me again, person.
- 8:12Jon: all.
- 8:12Ryan: it was, if it was the blue striped one i'd, I'd agree.
- 8:15Kearns: Oh yeah,
- 8:16Ryan: But you know, that's the red one.
- 8:20Kearns: I've never made Ryan lean forward and disgust before, and I'm
- 8:23very happy with myself right now.
- 8:25Ryan: This is like.
- 8:27is, I'm coming outta my shell.
- 8:28Slowly but surely.
- 8:29I mean, I was like saying to people, I would fight them if they said
- 8:33Alfred Go was a horrible Alfred
- 8:34Kearns: We will pay a listener $100,
- 8:38Jon: Don't call him Shirley.
- 8:39Kearns: you by Venmo, $100.
- 8:40If you can find the episode where Ryan, that says, instead of slowly
- 8:45but surely, he says, surely, but surely, but surly, I think
- 8:49Ryan: Shirley, but Shirley,
- 8:50Kearns: gimme the timestamp in the episode, I will send you $100.
- 8:55I am
- 8:56Ryan: I,
- 8:56Kearns: way.
- 8:56I have no money.
- 8:57I will go out and steal a hundred dollars and send it to you.
- 9:01Ryan: I will whore myself out
- 9:04Kearns: I will sell my
- 9:05Ryan: that,
- 9:05Kearns: my
- 9:06Jon: Yeah,
- 9:07Kearns: Give it to you.
- 9:08Jon: I'll, I'll do it anyway.
- 9:10Um, all right, so we have a two and a four for Jason next.
- 9:16Mask.
- 9:17Kearns: go.
- 9:17See, you fucked up, Ryan.
- 9:19Ryan: no, no, this, this would be four.
- 9:26Jon: Wow.
- 9:26Kearns: a wow from John?
- 9:28Because you love Texas.
- 9:30You saw a
- 9:30Jon: Wow.
- 9:30Oh four, huh?
- 9:32Kearns: I find the
- 9:32Ryan: I,
- 9:33Kearns: scary.
- 9:35Deuces,
- 9:36Ryan: It is scary, but opinion, that 2003, one, that was
- 9:44Jon: Don't you say it.
- 9:46Don't you say it.
- 9:48Kearns: grotes.
- 9:51Jon: Don't you say it.
- 9:57All right.
- 9:58Where do you have this one?
- 9:58Kerns two.
- 10:02Alright.
- 10:03Ready?
- 10:05Next mask.
- 10:06Ryan: number one.
- 10:07Kearns: number one.
- 10:10I love Michael Myers,
- 10:11Jon: Ooh, bold boy.
- 10:12Kearns: the mask, and I like the way the mask evolved.
- 10:15I like everything about the
- 10:16Ryan: Yep.
- 10:17Kearns: mask and it's scary as shit.
- 10:19Ryan: And that's my favorite movie.
- 10:21I gotta go with that.
- 10:22Kearns: John's got a doozy.
- 10:24Is it
- 10:24Jon: Okay.
- 10:25Kearns: or something?
- 10:26coming?
- 10:28Jon: Oh,
- 10:29Ryan: I got a,
- 10:30Jon: I have a couple doozies left for you guys.
- 10:32Ready?
- 10:33Ryan: so I'm ready.
- 10:33Oh five.
- 10:34Kearns: from a horror movie, so it should be in the blind ring.
- 10:38Ryan: Take that off.
- 10:40Kearns: That's a
- 10:40Jon: Listen,
- 10:43if everybody's gonna call it a horror movie, I'm gonna include it in masks.
- 10:47Ryan: It is a creepy mess.
- 10:48You can go to the spirit of Halloween store,
- 10:50Kearns: always fucks around with the last one.
- 10:54I'm gonna put this at five because I'm scared of what you're
- 10:57coming at me with for three,
- 10:59Ryan: which, okay.
- 10:59Kearns: but I would put this
- 11:00Ryan: Oh, so
- 11:01Kearns: generally.
- 11:02Ryan: be our three.
- 11:03We both have
- 11:03Jon: right?
- 11:05Yeah.
- 11:05So you both have, you're both gonna have the same three.
- 11:08Ryan: I hope it's Ghostface.
- 11:09Kearns: have three.
- 11:09Right?
- 11:10If it's Ghostface,
- 11:10Ryan: I hope ho.
- 11:11Jon: Yeah.
- 11:12Ryan: Please let it be ghost.
- 11:13Face it be ghost face.
- 11:16Kearns: What did he do?
- 11:17It
- 11:17Ryan: Yes.
- 11:19Kearns: I would've done, that would've been perfect for me.
- 11:21I would've been so happy with having Lector at three and Ghost space at five.
- 11:27Ryan: redemption of the list right now.
- 11:28I am really happy with my list
- 11:32Kearns: I'm happy with mine.
- 11:34Ryan: now.
- 11:36Jon: I gotta tell you,
- 11:36Kearns: Ghostface.
- 11:39Jon: I gotta tell you.
- 11:40I'd go Michael Myers one.
- 11:42Ryan: Okay.
- 11:44Jon: Ja Jason too.
- 11:45'cause I love, I'd love the simplicity.
- 11:48It's, you know, it's just an old school hockey mask.
- 11:52Um, I think I go leather phase three,
- 11:58Lecter four, and then ghost face would be my five also.
- 12:02Kearns: I would've swapped two from that list.
- 12:04If I hadn't screwed that up at the end, I should have known.
- 12:08I knew.
- 12:09I knew you were gonna do something.
- 12:11Ryan: I'm again, I'm, I'm fine with it.
- 12:14I, you know, I love Scream.
- 12:16Kearns: fun, man.
- 12:16Those are fun.
- 12:17So the black phone.
- 12:18Ryan: That was a good one.
- 12:19Kearns: what makes this movie unique?
- 12:21Why do people care?
- 12:22Child abduction
- 12:23Ryan: Oh,
- 12:24Kearns: Why is this movie good?
- 12:26Ryan: I feel like the pacing is a big thing 'cause it's
- 12:29an hour and 40 minute movie.
- 12:30It's very character building.
- 12:33Um, is there, there's really not a lot of gore until the ending.
- 12:40And I feel that all that it kind of gets the viewer to watch.
- 12:46It's the actors doing a hell of a job.
- 12:49It's the writing performing very well it shows and it tracks the audience too.
- 12:55And um, we mentioned it with weapons.
- 12:57Kearns: Yeah,
- 12:58Ryan: I would say like for a new generation, I'm not even gonna give
- 13:02them titles for the newer generation.
- 13:04This would be the gateway to watch older movies in my opinion.
- 13:08'cause the black phone has a nice slow pace, but it's not boring.
- 13:13Kearns: point that it's a gateway movie for Gen Z and Gen Alpha.
- 13:16I'll name them
- 13:17Ryan: Yeah.
- 13:20Trying to be democratic.
- 13:22Jon: Yeah.
- 13:22I, I, I, I think that's a big part of it.
- 13:26Absolutely.
- 13:27Kearns: and kids
- 13:28Jon: I think it,
- 13:30Ryan: Yep.
- 13:31Jon: mm-hmm.
- 13:32And, you know, I don't think this is always the case, but the two child leads
- 13:39Kearns: very
- 13:40Jon: are pretty good.
- 13:41Ryan: And um,
- 13:42Jon: They're pretty good at actors.
- 13:44Ryan: is a hiccup in the live action remake of How To Train Your Dragon.
- 13:48Kearns: cool.
- 13:49Ryan: Um, Jada's a big fan of that series and we saw the trailer for
- 13:53the remake and he does, he nails it.
- 13:57He's a good actor.
- 13:58He's got a lot of growth.
- 14:00He, you know, more
- 14:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:02Ryan: but I can see him doing a lot of big stuff.
- 14:05Kearns: You know, one thing that kind of hit
- 14:06Jon: Yeah.
- 14:07Kearns: with Jeremy Davies.
- 14:09He's an actor who has range, but his face doesn't like,
- 14:15Ryan: Yeah.
- 14:16Kearns: like the alcoholic Beaty dad, like, you could take him
- 14:20Jon: Uh huh.
- 14:21Kearns: he's just a giant fetus with a beard.
- 14:23Like you can take your army Davies, him back with the belts,
- 14:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:28Kearns: take him out.
- 14:29But he, I have a
- 14:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:30Kearns: with him
- 14:31Jon: But
- 14:31Kearns: just, he's not that guy to me.
- 14:37Jon: fair, fair enough.
- 14:38I think part of that, that works with that for me though, is Finney's not bold.
- 14:44At that point, he's not bold enough to stand up to dad.
- 14:48He's not bold enough to stand up to the bullies.
- 14:50He's not, he's, he's tough, but he's meek, like Robin says to him, at one
- 14:58point, you're tough, not because you fought, but because you kept getting up.
- 15:04Kearns: the classic hero trope too, which is not something I'm gonna knock.
- 15:07I
- 15:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:08Kearns: trope.
- 15:09'cause it's so true in life.
- 15:10He has it in
- 15:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:12Kearns: pulled out of him.
- 15:16Ryan: The hero's journey
- 15:17Jon: Yep.
- 15:18Kearns: Bill Dougs
- 15:19Ryan: and
- 15:20Jon: Yeah.
- 15:20You guys want a five star,
- 15:23Ryan: this is, is deserving.
- 15:26Jon: I think.
- 15:27I think, uh, I don't know if I'd go five.
- 15:30This is four is four is pretty reasonable, but here's this five superbly constructed
- 15:37film, the cinematography direction, acting score, et cetera, all way above standard.
- 15:45Won't give plot details, don't worry.
- 15:47We will.
- 15:48But it's a great story, brilliantly told, special mention to the actors
- 15:53playing as it brother and sister, totally convincing and with acting
- 15:59skills way beyond their years.
- 16:01Also, Ethan Hawk continues to be an underrated actor who brings a
- 16:06unique talent to every role he plays.
- 16:09I think Ethan Hawk might have wrote this review.
- 16:13Along with everything everywhere, all at once.
- 16:16This is one of the best films I've seen this year.
- 16:21We'll continue to watch Scott Erickson's work with interest.
- 16:24Highly recommended,
- 16:26Ryan: Okay.
- 16:26Kearns: That's a
- 16:27Ryan: Yeah,
- 16:27Kearns: statement.
- 16:28Okay.
- 16:29Jon: and
- 16:29Ryan: that is,
- 16:30Kearns: it's
- 16:30Jon: that's,
- 16:31Kearns: That means they really liked the movie.
- 16:33'cause that was a good movie.
- 16:34Um, Ethan
- 16:35Jon: yeah.
- 16:35Yeah.
- 16:36Kearns: I'm
- 16:37Jon: mean,
- 16:40yeah, the thing with everywhere, everything Everywhere all at once
- 16:43is I've never seen a movie like it
- 16:47Kearns: Which is hard at
- 16:48Jon: and the Yeah, yeah, the not, I mean, they, there were years that
- 16:54I watched five, 600 movies, so like we're talking lots and lots of movies,
- 17:03so.
- 17:04Kearns: Hawk.
- 17:04What I like about him is also like interesting about him is that he
- 17:08could be the guy who wore a a robe almost the entire movie of sinister.
- 17:14Was that a cardigan or a road?
- 17:15It was something comfy that he was just wandering around with while he
- 17:18was swell whiskey in that movie and
- 17:21Ryan: Rope.
- 17:22Kearns: it's his robe the whole time and he can
- 17:23Ryan: Yeah,
- 17:24Kearns: that work.
- 17:24I do like Ethan Hawke.
- 17:26I used to think he needed a strong lead to go with him, like Denzel or something like
- 17:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:32Kearns: from training day, because I didn't think he
- 17:34could stand on his own as well.
- 17:35But he's fine.
- 17:37He does a good job.
- 17:39Ryan: he steals.
- 17:39He steals the, the movie I think as his portrayal, as the Grabber.
- 17:44'cause I like
- 17:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:46Ryan: in and out, in and out and it's very like, it's very mysterious I like it.
- 17:53And
- 17:53Jon: Yes.
- 17:54Ryan: in there too.
- 17:55I'll talking about mask tonight.
- 17:56That mask is awesome.
- 17:59And the transformations like with the little piece that can
- 18:02disconnect, I'm presuming pretty cool.
- 18:07Jon: I think there's different versions.
- 18:09I think he just has different masks that sort of, almost fit the mood that
- 18:13he goes down into that basement in.
- 18:16Kearns: that's actually super cool.
- 18:19Ryan: Yeah, because there's a hat.
- 18:20There's a smiling one.
- 18:21There's the one that has a frown.
- 18:23Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 18:23Ryan: like there was one that had
- 18:24Jon: Yep.
- 18:25Ryan: at all, like that was like in the beginning.
- 18:28Kearns: pick out
- 18:28Jon: I think so.
- 18:29Yeah.
- 18:30Mm-hmm.
- 18:30Kearns: No, that's great.
- 18:31And that's, uh, when you get into like sociopaths and making
- 18:34them unique, that's cool.
- 18:35I.
- 18:35Jon: Yeah.
- 18:36And he, I mean, he's, this is a really good role for Ethan Hawke.
- 18:39It's kind of against type, it's, you know, it's,
- 18:42Kearns: He's been at a few of these movies now though.
- 18:45Blumhouse, how many Blumhouse
- 18:47Jon: yeah.
- 18:47Kearns: is that?
- 18:47Three.
- 18:49Ryan: Sinister purge.
- 18:51Yeah.
- 18:51Three.
- 18:51Kearns: Sinister Purge in this.
- 18:53Ryan: Yep.
- 18:54Kearns: he's starting to get, they're starting to, they like
- 18:55themselves some Ethan, for sure.
- 18:58Uh,
- 18:59Jon: Yep.
- 18:59Kearns: he sells tickets as well.
- 19:04Jon: Yeah.
- 19:06So you guys know for every five star there's gotta be a one star, right?
- 19:10Kearns: this
- 19:10Ryan: Or a half
- 19:14Jon: One star.
- 19:17I'm not sure what Kool-Aid these people drank before they watched
- 19:21this movie, but I wi I wish my theater would keep it in stock.
- 19:27This movie from start to finish maintains a plot that is best
- 19:31described as Swiss cheese.
- 19:34I would explain all of the plot holes here, but it would take too much
- 19:39time and it would spoil the movie.
- 19:41No, please explain them.
- 19:42I wanna know from what I've been able to recall so far, there's at least
- 19:47five or six major details in the movie that just don't add up or just
- 19:52cannot be ignored by the viewers.
- 19:55As far as production of a film goes, it was quote unquote nice
- 20:01to view, but impossible to follow.
- 20:05It was just like watching a bunch of tiktoks and hoping they
- 20:09kept a consistent storyline.
- 20:11It was like watching a movie, a kid dreamt of when he was 12 and when
- 20:16his parents paid too much, paid too much for movie school, and then
- 20:20he did this for his final project.
- 20:23This,
- 20:24Ryan: That stunk.
- 20:26Jon: this,
- 20:26Ryan: That
- 20:27Jon: yeah.
- 20:28The same people that rate this five stars, probably think the paranormal
- 20:33activities are real slash great.
- 20:37Save yourself the time, money, and have a couple drinks or
- 20:42smokes to watch this movie.
- 20:45It'll be entertaining then And only then four outta 10.
- 20:50Ryan: I wanna see the review of Nightmare on Elm Street that like.
- 20:55Kearns: that was, that was pretty rough.
- 20:58That was an
- 20:58Ryan: It.
- 20:59Jon: Like I, I'm, I'm missing the plot holes.
- 21:03Like, I mean,
- 21:04Ryan: very linear.
- 21:06Jon: are there a few things that are, are maybe a little rushed,
- 21:08but there's not gaping holes.
- 21:11It's pretty, I mean, aside from like, if you wanted to, if your
- 21:15complaint is, well, they don't tell you the background of the grabber.
- 21:19Oh, okay.
- 21:20Do you need it?
- 21:20Ryan: You didn't get the background really for Michael Myers in a way, right?
- 21:26you can
- 21:27Jon: No, I mean,
- 21:28Ryan: Oh, he, He was
- 21:30Jon: and I,
- 21:31Ryan: the
- 21:31Jon: it's,
- 21:31Ryan: He's everywhere.
- 21:33That was the ending.
- 21:35Jon: yeah, he's not yet, Michael's not established as, a relative until part two.
- 21:44Ryan: nonetheless.
- 21:44Kearns: a chalkboard.
- 21:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 21:48And so in, Halloween one, his motives are just, he goes and
- 21:52kills people on Halloween night.
- 21:53Kearns: we're going to find as we move forward in this brave new
- 21:57world is that old timers, other than because we're accepting we're,
- 22:02we're interested in change, we like the evolution of the, art form.
- 22:06It
- 22:06Ryan: Yep.
- 22:06Kearns: done wrong, malignant, but there's,
- 22:10Ryan: A hundred percent.
- 22:10Kearns: there's, like, we love, we welcome the new stuff when it's done right.
- 22:14Um, weapons.
- 22:15So the way it goes with this is, I think it's somebody who's just
- 22:19not down for that level of change.
- 22:21The, thing that gives it away is the TikTok reference, which I think is
- 22:26Ryan: Yep.
- 22:26Yeah.
- 22:27Jon: Yeah,
- 22:27Kearns: be wrong.
- 22:28Ryan: Yeah.
- 22:29And
- 22:29Jon: yeah.
- 22:29Ryan: you're,
- 22:30Jon: No, I'm,
- 22:31Ryan: it's not fast paced.
- 22:34Jon: and the parts that you could say are the most TikTok, like, I guess would be
- 22:40the phone calls, but each time that phone rings and there's a voice on the end.
- 22:47They come back to it.
- 22:49They're layering with those phone calls each, of the dead kids that calls him,
- 22:54gives him a little bit more information and another tool to use for his escape.
- 23:01and it all comes together at the, every little piece they give you in those calls
- 23:06comes together right down to the meat freezer on the other side and the frozen
- 23:11steak he takes out to give to the dog
- 23:14Kearns: what, what in
- 23:15Jon: every,
- 23:16Kearns: phone is happening here?
- 23:17Is this real supernatural?
- 23:19'cause this movie could easily have no supernatural element
- 23:21whatsoever and still be effective.
- 23:23Is this real supernatural?
- 23:24Are these real dead
- 23:25Jon: exactly.
- 23:26Kearns: the void to, to warn him,
- 23:28Ryan: Yes.
- 23:30Jon: I mean, there're really dead kids.
- 23:32There is a supernatural element in his sister, in Finney's, sister
- 23:35Gwen, and her ability to have these sort of psychic dreams.
- 23:42Kearns: you're
- 23:42Jon: Which, you know, they sort of, yeah, they sort of established that
- 23:47she has these dreams and they're not, maybe not quite a hundred percent
- 23:52accurate, but they're accurate enough to get you into the ballpark of things.
- 23:58Kearns: Gotcha.
- 23:59All right.
- 24:00Jon: and then Finney gets taken and put in this basement with a phone that
- 24:05apparently only he and the grabber can ever hear Ring or, and if Finney's
- 24:14the only one to ever answer it.
- 24:16Ryan: it's a part of his imagination the entire time.
- 24:19Jon: Yeah.
- 24:19Kearns: and Joe were like getting father and son massages and just talking like,
- 24:24wouldn't it be cool if dead people could talk to you through the phone?
- 24:27Dad, I'll write a story about it and you can write a story about, we'll see
- 24:30which grosses more at the box office.
- 24:33'cause I just made that connection when I made the joke about Carrigan's
- 24:36phone, I was like, wait a second.
- 24:37These two did come out around the same time.
- 24:39The stories.
- 24:40At least within five years.
- 24:43Jon: Yeah.
- 24:44Kearns: Mr. Harrigan going better.
- 24:47Jon: Father, father and son massages or father and son bumps.
- 24:50Kearns: Bumps anymore, man.
- 24:53OSK is old.
- 24:55Bump himself into a grave and be calling Joe about that.
- 25:04Jon: Yeah,
- 25:07Kearns: I think we're talking about the same thing.
- 25:10Bumps.
- 25:11Okay.
- 25:12Ryan: Bumps,
- 25:12Jon: we are.
- 25:13Ryan: bumps.
- 25:15Kearns: right.
- 25:15Jon: Yeah.
- 25:15Kearns: All right.
- 25:16Jon: Yeah.
- 25:16Kearns: Google YouTube bumps.
- 25:18It is.
- 25:20Jon: but yeah, so that phone starts ringing and it's all the kids that were
- 25:23kidnapped before Finney one by one, giving him little bits and you know,
- 25:30finney's identifying who they are, because apparently in this universe, when you're
- 25:35dead, you don't remember who you are.
- 25:38Ryan: That was a nice little touch.
- 25:39Like, they're like, I guess as you die you're losing yourself 'cause you're
- 25:43going on to whatever other world or plane, whatever you wanna say.
- 25:47Kearns: Death
- 25:48Ryan: And Yep.
- 25:49And it shows.
- 25:50It's pretty, it's pretty cool, especially, um, meets the tough kid
- 25:55and he's like, I know who you are.
- 25:56And he's like, listen kid, do this, this.
- 26:00That was like my favorite one I think.
- 26:02Kearns: Tough Kid's.
- 26:02One of my favorite characters in the
- 26:04Jon: I think.
- 26:05Kearns: Bandana.
- 26:06Tough Groty kid.
- 26:08Ryan: Oh no.
- 26:09Jon: There's another one too.
- 26:11There's a, yeah.
- 26:12Later on you get this long-haired kid whose name I'm scrolling.
- 26:16Vance.
- 26:17Kearns: too.
- 26:18Jon: Vance.
- 26:20Yeah.
- 26:20So you like the first couple of kids he talks to, you can tell
- 26:24where you know you met them.
- 26:26they're not necessarily weak, but they're not.
- 26:28They're just kind of kids.
- 26:30And then you get Vance and Robin at the end and you have to wonder how
- 26:36on earth the grabber kept those two under control long enough to kill him.
- 26:41Ryan: for with Vance that he was a big dude, like,
- 26:46Jon: He was a big kid.
- 26:48He was a tough kid and he was crazy.
- 26:50And Robin, I mean, they showed you very quickly Robin could fight.
- 26:54Ryan: he takes down the kid and he knocks him out once it's like, okay,
- 26:58and then he looks back and he smiles and he's just like pounding him in
- 27:01as the blood's just flowing from the
- 27:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 27:04Kearns: That was for the crowd.
- 27:05Yeah.
- 27:06Ryan: yep.
- 27:06Kearns: making a point.
- 27:07Sorry
- 27:07Jon: Yep,
- 27:08Kearns: an example.
- 27:09Ryan: Yeah.
- 27:10Jon: yep,
- 27:11Ryan: It's old school.
- 27:13Kearns: Yeah, a kid
- 27:14Jon: yep.
- 27:14Ryan: generation needs.
- 27:16Kearns: There's
- 27:16Ryan: That's what this generation needs.
- 27:18Kearns: today.
- 27:18There are kids who will jump you with six kids.
- 27:21Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 27:21Kearns: There's no, there's no
- 27:23Jon: Yeah,
- 27:23Kearns: nails.
- 27:23I'm
- 27:24Jon: yeah.
- 27:24Kearns: with overwhelm.
- 27:25And he was like five feet tall.
- 27:28Ryan: Yeah.
- 27:28He was, he was shorter than that guy
- 27:31Kearns: though.
- 27:31My
- 27:31Ryan: or that,
- 27:31Kearns: if you ever
- 27:32Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 27:33Kearns: I'm shouting you out.
- 27:34was a scrawny little dude and he was tough as frigging nails.
- 27:40It was just the way it went.
- 27:43Jon: Yeah.
- 27:43A lot of times those guys are
- 27:45Kearns: But there are abductors who
- 27:46Jon: so you.
- 27:49Yeah.
- 27:51I mean, they established that, the grabber knocks them out
- 27:55with a gas before he takes them.
- 27:57But then, I mean, if he conducted himself with Vance and Robin in
- 28:03particular, the same way he did with Finney going down and talking to
- 28:07him and, you know, whatever, or I,
- 28:11Ryan: a
- 28:11Jon: I mean, it kind, of makes you believe he's more of a badass than
- 28:15just some guy hiding behind a mask too.
- 28:18Ryan: Ah, he's, very smart.
- 28:19He, like with Finney, you see he drops the groceries, oh, foolish me.
- 28:24then gets him close.
- 28:26And then
- 28:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:27Ryan: throws, what throws Finney off is the balloons.
- 28:31If he didn't like stop a minute to look at the balloons and just run.
- 28:36'cause you can see he knows something's off.
- 28:39And that's a nice
- 28:40Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:41Ryan: the grabber leaves balloons at each scene, like his
- 28:44calling card that the cops have
- 28:47Jon: Yeah.
- 28:47Yeah.
- 28:48Ryan: don't know how you can hide that.
- 28:49They're floating in the air.
- 28:51Kearns: Very Pennywise of them are him.
- 28:55Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:56Dave.
- 28:58Yeah, they, that's a de one of those details the cops kept outta the media
- 29:02and one of the details that pops up in Gwen's Dreams, which helps,
- 29:07ultimately helps the cops believe her.
- 29:10It initially, it leads to her getting beat pretty severely by alcoholic dad.
- 29:16Ryan: That's tough.
- 29:18Kearns: Good
- 29:19Ryan: That was tough.
- 29:19Kearns: and his,
- 29:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:20Kearns: his vodka though.
- 29:21You
- 29:21Ryan: Oh,
- 29:22Kearns: that out.
- 29:22But if we did
- 29:23Jon: Absolutely.
- 29:24Kearns: F that guy.
- 29:27Ryan: I
- 29:27Jon: Yeah.
- 29:29Ryan: She
- 29:29Jon: him.
- 29:30Ryan: her own and that's a badass right there.
- 29:33And by holding her
- 29:34Jon: Yeah.
- 29:35Ryan: as a viewer, she is stronger than her father.
- 29:40As much as he has the power doing whatever he is doing, she is stronger.
- 29:45And that was, that was awesome.
- 29:48Jon: absolutely both.
- 29:49Both of the kids are stronger than dad.
- 29:51Finney just had to realize it.
- 29:54Ryan: takes him till the end, but, know, 'cause you
- 29:57Jon: Mm-hmm,
- 29:57Ryan: like that one scene where he, you, he's clenching, he's angry, but
- 30:01he's just like, I can't do anything.
- 30:05He's like, stuck.
- 30:06And it, it sucks.
- 30:08sucks.
- 30:11Jon: mm-hmm.
- 30:12Kearns: Right.
- 30:13Jon: Yeah.
- 30:14But then he, you know, he gets, he gets his little bits of, bits
- 30:18of stuff he, you know, loads of phone receiver up with sand.
- 30:22Kearns: Love that.
- 30:25Ryan: That
- 30:25Jon: That's such an awesome touch.
- 30:29Kearns: Probably
- 30:30Jon: an awesome touch.
- 30:30Kearns: old school movies.
- 30:31There's the one where the, they, is it Sean Penn. stuck in the juvie
- 30:35center and he gets, he buys like 20 RC Colas fills up the, the,
- 30:40Ryan: yeah.
- 30:40Kearns: pillowcase and beats the kid with it.
- 30:43That's,
- 30:43Jon: that's first Bad boys.
- 30:45That's non Will Smith bad boys.
- 30:47I think that was an HBO movie too.
- 30:49Kearns: was great.
- 30:52I just have seen the, the
- 30:53Jon: Yeah.
- 30:54Kearns: the change in it be used before too.
- 30:56There's some good stuff out there.
- 30:58There's nothing.
- 30:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 31:00Mm-hmm.
- 31:00I, I, I'll say this though, these abductions couldn't occur this way in
- 31:06this day and age because you wouldn't, have kids walking alone anymore.
- 31:10Like it would take one and kids wouldn't be out on the streets anymore.
- 31:14Kearns: culture here, and all the news would be running it because
- 31:16that's what gets the ratings.
- 31:18Yeah.
- 31:19If it, it bleeds, what is it?
- 31:21If it bleeds, it leads that thing.
- 31:23Ryan: yep.
- 31:23Kearns: uh, yeah,
- 31:24Jon: Yeah.
- 31:25Kearns: with that.
- 31:26They'd blame different groups of people for it.
- 31:28there'd
- 31:29Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 31:29Kearns: of stuff going on, anything but solving the problem.
- 31:33And then their killer would be, you know, trying to figure out
- 31:36ways to abduct kids at home.
- 31:39Ryan: It's just putting fuel on a fire.
- 31:41Kearns: The interesting thing about it
- 31:43Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 31:43Kearns: a sociopath, a people hunter, they, start out with such an advantage.
- 31:49They're gonna get numbers in the beginning, before people figure out
- 31:52what's going on, because the element of surprise is so effective anyway.
- 31:56They are preying on kids, which is the decisive advantage.
- 32:00But there's also just the fact that when you plan something out like that, you're
- 32:05gonna have a high success rate, like laying the trap, the groundwork, using
- 32:09the crazy knockout gas, all those things.
- 32:13Ryan: well he
- 32:15Jon: Yep.
- 32:16Ryan: in his side.
- 32:18He's got his brother, he's got Max, and he's, he on, you know, he's getting close.
- 32:26He's getting close to figuring it out at least the first time you see him.
- 32:30Um, but he's an eccentric character and it kind of you a more of
- 32:35an idea of the difference of growing up, if that makes sense.
- 32:42Because the grabber has one view of growing up, and Max
- 32:46seems like he has another view.
- 32:48Kearns: Effective is a
- 32:49Ryan: 'cause he's,
- 32:50Kearns: We talked about that in
- 32:51Ryan: I, I mean he's over there doing cocaine on the, the counter,
- 32:56you know, having a good old time trying to figure out this cold case.
- 33:00And his brother's wearing a mask with a belt,
- 33:04Jon: He is, yeah, he's trying to figure out this cold case while the
- 33:07case is literally right under his feet
- 33:11Ryan: which was nice.
- 33:12Jon: and it's right below him.
- 33:14He's, and like he's got it all figured out and then the cops show
- 33:18up there because Gwen led them there.
- 33:22And they talk to Max, who's got almost the whole thing figured
- 33:27out except an exact location.
- 33:29And you can see the cops almost wanna believe him, except he's also so
- 33:36koy in that moment that how can you
- 33:39Ryan: off the wall.
- 33:41You can see the little twitch.
- 33:42He was like, listen, this is where it is.
- 33:43It's
- 33:44Jon: mm-hmm.
- 33:44Ryan: there to there.
- 33:45And the cops are like, what the,
- 33:47Jon: Yeah.
- 33:47Ryan: the F are you on?
- 33:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 33:51Kearns: Back then Tang.
- 33:53Ryan: Whoa.
- 33:53Yeah.
- 33:53Jon: okay.
- 33:54Kearns: too.
- 33:54Ryan: they look at it too?
- 33:56Didn't they look at it at the table for a second and then left?
- 34:00Okay.
- 34:01Jon: Uh, which is, incredible because that's such a botch by those cops.
- 34:08'cause that gives them the ability to search the whole house.
- 34:11Mm-hmm.
- 34:12Ryan: well, we had, listen, we had an hour and a half to go on that film.
- 34:17Right.
- 34:19It needs to fill
- 34:19Jon: Yeah, obviously.
- 34:20Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:24Kearns: Yeah.
- 34:24Jon: Speaking of time,
- 34:26Kearns: one
- 34:26Jon: you want a one star?
- 34:27Ryan: of course.
- 34:28Kearns: up the end
- 34:29Jon: Yeah.
- 34:30Kearns: a pretty bow.
- 34:32Yeah,
- 34:33Jon: This is easily one of the five worst films I've ever seen.
- 34:39Kearns: that's great question.
- 34:40Titanic.
- 34:40Jon: I'm curious.
- 34:42my first review is deleted for some reason, but I'm so upset at the fact
- 34:47that it was so overhyped and I spent money on it that I will persist.
- 34:53Still don't understand how it has so many five star reviews.
- 34:58The acting is horrible.
- 35:00This story is an incoherent, I think he meant to add
- 35:04something there, but he did not.
- 35:07It's extremely boring.
- 35:09Absolutely nothing is explained about any of the characters.
- 35:14It's not even slightly scary or creepy in any way.
- 35:18The end is astonishingly anticlimactic.
- 35:21Kearns: are gonna talk about in a sec.
- 35:23Jon: There's,
- 35:26there is some cinematography that looks like it was filmed by a group
- 35:30of middle schoolers with an iPhone.
- 35:34Take the worst Disney Channel movie you can remember and give it a sinister
- 35:39vibe and a dollar store budget.
- 35:42I honestly feel sorry for the child actors whose careers are now
- 35:47ruined because of this monstrosity.
- 35:52Horror.
- 35:53Horror is definitely dying and is more about hype and marketing these days, but
- 35:59this one has its own tier of badness.
- 36:03Three outta 10, stay home and watch paint dry instead.
- 36:07Kearns: though.
- 36:07I'll give you that buddy.
- 36:09Wow.
- 36:09Ryan: but wrong.
- 36:11In my opinion.
- 36:12Kearns: is he wrong about the end of
- 36:13Jon: Yeah.
- 36:15Kearns: Why
- 36:16Ryan: It,
- 36:17Kearns: Why?
- 36:17Ryan: builds up, like John was saying, each phone call.
- 36:21Builds up to him setting up, like he digs the hole, he's got the carpet,
- 36:26you know, he's leading to traps.
- 36:28He's got the phone with the dirt
- 36:30Kearns: he flips the script.
- 36:32Ryan: yeah.
- 36:33And that's the thing,
- 36:34Jon: Yep.
- 36:35Ryan: he, the grabber brings his dog, which is this, I don't even know the
- 36:38breed, but it's, it's a nasty, nasty.
- 36:42It's a nasty dog.
- 36:44He locks him on the
- 36:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:45Ryan: just waiting for Finn to do something.
- 36:49then once Finn jumps over and the grabber follows him, goes in the hole
- 36:54and the grabber breaks his leg, gets caught in the vent, and he goes to town.
- 36:59And as, um, the first victim states he's got, uh, a lean, a mint.
- 37:06A mint arm.
- 37:07Was it a mint arm?
- 37:08He's got a
- 37:09Jon: Mint arm.
- 37:09Yeah.
- 37:10Yeah.
- 37:10Your arm is, your arm is mint.
- 37:12Ryan: he goes swinging.
- 37:14Kearns: he's a pitcher baby.
- 37:17Jon: Yeah, it is.
- 37:18Ryan: was so, it feels so good.
- 37:21it's, feel like I've
- 37:23Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:23Ryan: lot of movies, LA Horror films, of course.
- 37:26'cause we do the podcast and I've been watching more movies.
- 37:29This has been the most satisfying villain.
- 37:32Death in a long time.
- 37:35Jon: It is pretty satisfying.
- 37:36Yeah.
- 37:37Kearns: There's
- 37:38Jon: Or presumed to death.
- 37:39Kearns: I'm forgetting the name,
- 37:41Ryan: Oh,
- 37:41Kearns: but there
- 37:42Ryan: I got some details.
- 37:43Kearns: a guy, um, well, he invites another dude over.
- 37:47There's like an inheritance thing going on.
- 37:49Whatever it would be in his best interest if the guy invited over his
- 37:52dead, he brings him into meet his tiger, his like giant, all black tiger.
- 37:58uh, he locks him into the paddock at night.
- 38:00And they usually feed the cat.
- 38:03They haven't fed it all day.
- 38:04So he used to sit there and wait, but the cat's never tasted blood before.
- 38:09throughout the night there's random, you know, whatever.
- 38:11Eventually trying to eat him, he manages to get himself wedged up
- 38:15high and it just, got close enough where it claws him and gets a
- 38:17little bit of him to munch, MunchOn.
- 38:20The dude, assuming he's dead, opens up the, the door in the morning comes in and
- 38:23he is like, Hey, Tommy boy or whatever he calls the damn thing, I forget it.
- 38:27And because
- 38:28Ryan: Yeah.
- 38:28Kearns: human blood, it devours him instead.
- 38:32that seems very similar how the
- 38:35Ryan: What it,
- 38:35Kearns: the dog goes about business.
- 38:40Jon: Well, the dog is distracted by a frozen steak.
- 38:43Ryan: frozen.
- 38:44That looked thawed.
- 38:45All right.
- 38:47Jon: Uh, fair enough.
- 38:48I mean, he, he did break into that freezer some amount of time ago,
- 38:54Ryan: all that cold air is coming out
- 38:57Jon: and while, while Finney's fighting to grab her, Gwen has led the cops back
- 39:02into the area, just to the house, across the street after she dreamt about it and
- 39:09then went riding her bike to try to find the house, and then seeing the ghosts of
- 39:15the already dead kids in front of a house.
- 39:18It turns out she's at the house across the street.
- 39:21The cops raided that house and it looks like they're not gonna find anything.
- 39:25You're like, oh, crap, he moved him.
- 39:26They're not gonna, finney's not gonna escape.
- 39:29Or he is gonna escape and he's gonna be in some sort of limbo land or something.
- 39:33But, you know, they discover a basement in that house and the, you know, the graves
- 39:38that the grabber dug there and then, you know, as Gwen is sitting and crying out
- 39:46of that, across the street comes Finney.
- 39:49Ryan: Yep.
- 39:50Good ending.
- 39:52Jon: It is, it is.
- 39:53But I will, I will say this.
- 39:55I mean, and you know, now knowing that there's a black phone too
- 39:59coming, I will, I will repeat one of my consistent horror rules.
- 40:04If you do not see the, the, the character dead, the character is probably not dead.
- 40:12Kearns: like Ethan Hawks getting a payday again.
- 40:15Ryan: So you wanna hear the curve ball that's kind of like in, in the trailer.
- 40:21So I was watching the trailer 'cause their reviews are going crazy for the sequel.
- 40:26the first one's excellent.
- 40:27I feel like it doesn't need a sequel, but the sequel does have my interest.
- 40:31And watching the trailer today, it seems like he's, there's like a connection.
- 40:37Like he's in hell.
- 40:39He's coming back through dreams.
- 40:42It's very Freddy.
- 40:44Um,
- 40:46Kearns: like an
- 40:46Ryan: but it's, yeah, it's like his connection is through this telephone
- 40:52booth on a frozen lake and it's, it looks interesting, looks scary.
- 41:00Um, he's all mingled up.
- 41:03He's been in hell, like he's coming back.
- 41:05But this is kind like.
- 41:07The start of sadly to say a franchise, I feel, 'cause
- 41:14Jon: It very well could be.
- 41:15I don't think it needs to be, but it could be.
- 41:18Ryan: is gonna end it, but
- 41:20Kearns: just make a good one-off and don't ruin it and they're gonna ruin it.
- 41:23But that's what to do today.
- 41:25Alright,
- 41:26Ryan: Yep.
- 41:26Kearns: overall though, we, it was well received.
- 41:28We enjoyed it.
- 41:29John's gonna give one more review and then we're gonna run into top five.
- 41:33Jon: It was not well received by this man.
- 41:36Ryan: Half star.
- 41:38Jon: We have another one.
- 41:39We have another one who has not seen enough movies in his life.
- 41:42One star.
- 41:44This was quite possibly the worst movie I have ever seen.
- 41:48Nothing happens.
- 41:51I will forgive myself for wasting $20 and two, do two hours of
- 41:55my life to watch this film.
- 41:57Awful writing, confusing and uninteresting story.
- 42:02Abysmal child actors cringe jokes and the tone of movie did
- 42:09not match the themes whatsoever.
- 42:12I recommend no one watches this movie unless you have a lot of boring things
- 42:17to do and would like to find something more boring to compare them to making
- 42:23those things much more enjoyable.
- 42:27Every dollar wasted on this movie should be donated to charity.
- 42:31No one deserves to be paid for this embarrassing excuse for a movie.
- 42:37If you ever feel bad about yourself, your life, or anything that you are not
- 42:42happy with, please watch this movie.
- 42:45By the times the credits roll, you'll be crying tears of joy that no matter
- 42:51what has happened to you, no matter what you have done wrong in your
- 42:56life, you did not make this movie and things will not seem so bad.
- 43:01Kearns: That guy was battling demons in that review.
- 43:04Ryan, do me
- 43:04Ryan: Oh yeah.
- 43:06Kearns: Bring this down to your chin
- 43:09because all I hear on the mic is
- 43:12Ryan: Oh, my bad.
- 43:13Kearns: it's all good.
- 43:14I don't know if it'll keep going or not.
- 43:17Now I still hear it.
- 43:22Is it John?
- 43:25No, it's not John.
- 43:27I see it on
- 43:28Ryan: Is it
- 43:29Kearns: Do you see the little, do you see the volume thing go up when he breathes?
- 43:34Jon: Breathe.
- 43:37Yep,
- 43:37Kearns: So through the whole review, all I'm hearing is
- 43:41with the wind through the willows.
- 43:46We should keep this in the
- 43:47Ryan: my bet?
- 43:48Kearns: No,
- 43:48Ryan: My bet.
- 43:49Kearns: fault.
- 43:49You don't have
- 43:50Ryan: I'll
- 43:50Jon: absolutely.
- 43:51Ryan: breath.
- 43:51F.
- 43:51Kearns: don't know.
- 43:51It never, it's never happened
- 43:53Jon: Hold your breath and No, I've never heard it before.
- 43:57Kearns: minutes, trying to figure out if it's you or John.
- 44:00Ryan: it's just been a weird day.
- 44:01All right.
- 44:02Kearns: fixes it.
- 44:03It's a weird day with your lung capacity is
- 44:05Ryan: day.
- 44:06Kearns: because
- 44:10I just ran a triathlon, bro.
- 44:12It's a weird day.
- 44:13Ryan: Had a, had a run before doing the podcast.
- 44:16Kearns: get my, you know, the bellow is going for all that.
- 44:20All right, so th this was a good movie.
- 44:22This shouldn't be a franchise.
- 44:23I think we're gonna leave it at that, right guys?
- 44:26Ryan: Yep.
- 44:27I agree.
- 44:27Jon: Yeah, we don't need, we don't need I, I'll, I'll watch too.
- 44:32That would probably be where I stop.
- 44:33Ryan: Yeah, I agree.
- 44:36Two I.
- 44:36Kearns: just to be judgy.
- 44:39Ryan: Well, mean, if how, it sounds like it's gonna be a
- 44:44complete ending for the second one.
- 44:46If they were to do a third one, it would definitely become like, again,
- 44:50like I said, Freddy is because he's just gonna come back from, hell
- 44:54haunt these kids, haunt whatever.
- 44:57But this leads to my top five of the night
- 45:00Kearns: What a
- 45:01Ryan: and one, one is enough.
- 45:04And these are unnecessary sequels and franchises.
- 45:08Kearns: it.
- 45:09All right.
- 45:09Let's do it.
- 45:09Ryan: Alright.
- 45:10Jon: Ooh.
- 45:11Oh, we could get some fights here too.
- 45:13Ryan: I'm ready for this.
- 45:14So my number five, we've mentioned it many of times, go through it quick.
- 45:19It's the Blair Witch Project One was enough.
- 45:22didn't need a sequel.
- 45:24We didn't need the second, we didn't need the third.
- 45:27We just need the first one.
- 45:28It was I, well, yeah, that
- 45:31Kearns: that?
- 45:32Ryan: I, I gotta start safe.
- 45:34Come on now.
- 45:35Kearns: judging.
- 45:36Jon: I, I mean, I have to tell you, I like, I like the two sequels
- 45:39more than I like the original.
- 45:41Kearns: to pick, pick at you now,
- 45:43Ryan: when she's in the ruins, in the sequel and she like loses the baby and
- 45:47she's like, I don't know what's going on.
- 45:49You're losing the baby.
- 45:50There's pain, there's blood everywhere, and there's, she's just bleeding.
- 45:54They're like, do we use the flip phone to call the nine one one?
- 45:58It's like, yes, yes.
- 46:02Kearns: you do?
- 46:02Ryan: Fuck, number four.
- 46:06Number four.
- 46:07Ooh.
- 46:08Oh one was enough.
- 46:10Psycho.
- 46:13Do we need two?
- 46:15Do we need three?
- 46:16Do we need four?
- 46:19You
- 46:19Jon: enough.
- 46:20Ryan: they have a sequel.
- 46:21The book has a sequel.
- 46:23It's a nice follow up.
- 46:24But movie wise, they're fun, but not necessary.
- 46:30Kearns: I'm with
- 46:31Jon: Did we need a Gu, a Gus Vanzant remake
- 46:34Ryan: exactly shot by shot.
- 46:37Jon: with Ann Hait and Vince Vaughn?
- 46:39Did we need that?
- 46:41Ryan: I wa I started watching it 'cause I was like, oh, maybe they did something
- 46:45Jon: It's bad.
- 46:46Kearns: Vince
- 46:46Ryan: no they didn't.
- 46:47Jon: It's bad.
- 46:48Kearns: creepy in it though, which is kind of, because it's
- 46:50Vince Vaughn looking that way.
- 46:51You're like, what the hell?
- 46:53But other than
- 46:54Ryan: I, he,
- 46:54Kearns: the
- 46:55Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:55Kearns: It's Vince
- 46:56Ryan: he does great.
- 46:57Kearns: I mean, for
- 46:58Ryan: He does.
- 46:58I, yeah.
- 47:00I mean, he's a, he's a good actor in the role, but just change it up.
- 47:05Which,
- 47:06Kearns: one does not have a lot of range.
- 47:07I'm just gonna say it.
- 47:08Throw that out
- 47:09Ryan: no,
- 47:10Kearns: He
- 47:11Ryan: it big,
- 47:12Kearns: season three or two.
- 47:13Which one was it?
- 47:15'cause he was just such a bad villain.
- 47:17Ryan: I think it was three.
- 47:18It
- 47:19Kearns: Rachel
- 47:20Jon: Two.
- 47:20Ryan: was
- 47:20Jon: it's three.
- 47:21Kearns: the guy from Friday Night Lights and, and, uh, the
- 47:25Irish dude with the big penis.
- 47:31Ryan: Colin Ferrell.
- 47:31Kearns: that's right.
- 47:32Ryan: Yeah.
- 47:32Kearns: knows about the big penis.
- 47:37We're gonna clip that
- 47:38Jon: Ryan.
- 47:43Ryan: Uh, number number three.
- 47:46There's no penises in this film, but again, one was enough.
- 47:49The Exorcist,
- 47:50Kearns: Yeah.
- 47:52a crucifix though.
- 47:54Yeah.
- 47:54Ryan: I Listen
- 47:55Kearns: at the first.
- 47:56You're right.
- 47:57Ryan: again, it, it's a book.
- 48:00The sequel, the heretic of the book is excellent.
- 48:04They did it as a third film.
- 48:06It's a good film, but late.
- 48:10The first one hits the punch.
- 48:11You fuck it up with the second one.
- 48:14I'm not even bleeping that out.
- 48:15No.
- 48:15You fuck it up with the second one, and then you come back with the third one,
- 48:20which is decent, but there's no saving.
- 48:22And then the new one.
- 48:25What are we doing here?
- 48:26You're just, you're.
- 48:28Copying everything everyone has done.
- 48:30Do something different.
- 48:33Jon: Yeah.
- 48:34You're, you're copying what other people have done who are
- 48:37copying what you did originally.
- 48:39Kearns: copy of a copy.
- 48:40If you watch multiplicity, you know that you can't do that.
- 48:44I want pizza, Steve.
- 48:45All right.
- 48:45What's your number two?
- 48:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:48I be eventually you get one Shaving his tongue.
- 48:50Kearns: the pizza in his wallet that has sex with his wife.
- 48:56Jon: She touched my pep.
- 48:56Steve.
- 48:58Kearns: Go see multiplicity kids.
- 48:59All right.
- 49:00Ryan: multiplicity.
- 49:01So good.
- 49:011996. Good year Black sheep came out too.
- 49:04number two, um, Kern's favorite film.
- 49:07One was enough child's play.
- 49:10Kearns: iTrick.
- 49:10That movie, man.
- 49:11Uh, it's a good
- 49:12Ryan: I,
- 49:12Kearns: when I was a kid, that movie messed me up.
- 49:15Ryan: John, gets blown up at the, he gets blown up at the end of the first one.
- 49:20What do they do?
- 49:21They recollect his pieces and they put it through the melting to create
- 49:26a new doll to bring him back to life.
- 49:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:29Kearns: poops for that.
- 49:31Ryan: it's a cool concept, but I and the military one come.
- 49:36Kearns: All roads lead to seed of Chucky.
- 49:38Come on.
- 49:38We gotta
- 49:39Ryan: Yes,
- 49:41Kearns: This is
- 49:42Ryan: I've watched Scene of Chucky multiple times and
- 49:44got a good laugh out of it.
- 49:46It's, it's, if you watch it as a comedy,
- 49:48Kearns: adjacent.
- 49:49Yeah,
- 49:49Ryan: it's funny, but Bri a chunky ends it with the whore and God,
- 49:55John Ru John Rett iss in it.
- 49:58He doesn't even save it.
- 50:01Kearns: just that religious when you think about It
- 50:03Ryan: I know.
- 50:04I went on my soapbox tonight.
- 50:05Kearns: one though.
- 50:06All right.
- 50:08Good list.
- 50:09Ryan: John, do you have any comments?
- 50:10I was just on child's life.
- 50:13Kearns: It
- 50:13Jon: No, no, I'm, I'm I, I'm gonna let that one go.
- 50:16Although the last two childs play movies were really good.
- 50:19Ryan: I, so I haven't seen them yet.
- 50:21'cause I was nervous that they still went in.
- 50:24I mean, you're always gonna have comedy, but I was nervous that I wasn't gonna
- 50:28Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 50:28Ryan: seed of Chucky was just a
- 50:31Jon: No, you should def, definitely watch the, I mean, especially if you
- 50:34watched all the ones up to it, you might as well watch the last two.
- 50:38Ryan: two.
- 50:38That's a whole other thing though.
- 50:40But my number one might cause a little controversy.
- 50:43And I will say I like number two.
- 50:46Kearns: You do love number
- 50:47Ryan: Uh, I like, I like,
- 50:50Jon: I like number two too.
- 50:51Ryan: like, I like
- 50:52Kearns: on that one.
- 50:53John.
- 50:54Ryan: just.
- 50:55It's short though.
- 50:56Not as long as like, you know, the remaking stuff, but one was enough.
- 51:03It's the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
- 51:06Kearns: No, John.
- 51:08John disagrees.
- 51:09You did this on purpose.
- 51:11Ryan: No, no, no.
- 51:12Kearns: at him Twitch.
- 51:12Ryan: I feel, I feel, I feel, I feel the first one's a classic.
- 51:18like the second one.
- 51:21tops amazing.
- 51:22But you like he goes more into the comedy with the second one, which I appreciate.

- 52:27Ryan: I can't wait for part two.
- 52:29Oh, this is just, this is the start of a series right now.
- 52:34Kearns: you God.
- 52:35Jon: Oh, you, you wait, sir. You wait until I get ahold of franchises.
- 52:41That didn't need to exist, Mr. Scream.
- 52:442, 3, 4, 7, 8, 12.
- 52:46Kearns: went to like
- 52:47Ryan: that is, that is a great storyline.
- 52:50They all make sense.
- 52:53All right.
- 52:54All right.
- 52:57Kearns: What is
- 52:57Jon: up in one.
- 52:58Kearns: audio?
- 52:59I can't
- 52:59Ryan: That's how
- 53:00Kearns: you're so angry that your sound isn't working.
- 53:05No, it's
- 53:05Jon: How about now?
- 53:06Kearns: worse.
- 53:06Ryan: no
- 53:08Kearns: It's like auto

- 53:15Kearns: Now we, we can hear you when you speak normally.
- 53:18Try it.
- 53:22Jon: I think it just doesn't like me yelling.
- 53:23Kearns: It is lower.
- 53:24We will figure it out.
- 53:26Do, do, do, do.
- 53:27Ryan: You know what?
- 53:28I'll even, I'll even accept Halloween.
- 53:31And I love Halloween.
- 53:32Kearns: it a little bit,
- 53:32Ryan: I love Halloween.
- 53:33I love Halloween.
- 53:35Kearns: we know you
- 53:35Ryan: I love Halloween.
- 53:36Kearns: top five before you backpedal yourself into saying that all these
- 53:39movies should have been franchises.
- 53:43Ryan: Well, not franchised actually.
- 53:47Jon: All right.
- 53:48I went with five phone calls that are not as helpful as the ones in black phone
- 53:55Kearns: All right, let's.
- 53:56Ryan: That's a good one.
- 53:59Jon: at number five is, don't answer the phone.
- 54:04Ryan: Yeah.
- 54:07Jon: Um, a Vietnam vet returns home very disturbed and begins to terrorize
- 54:12women and taunt a radio psychologist with the details of each murder.
- 54:17Kearns: sideshow Bob.
- 54:19Jon: It was not Frazier Crane.
- 54:21There are no cheers Appearances on this list this week.
- 54:24Number four is a movie vinegar syndrome put out a few years ago.
- 54:28It's called Disconnected.
- 54:31A video store employee named Alicia starts getting ominous,
- 54:35threatening phone calls at work after breaking up with her boyfriend.
- 54:39But police believe it is Franklin, a man suspected in a series of gruesome murders.
- 54:46And this, this is directed by the same guy that directed psychos in love, which
- 54:50I threw on the top five a while ago.
- 54:52Stays same kind of same kind of atmosphere, same kind of idea.
- 54:58Disconnected number three.
- 55:02I actually watched this afternoon to kick off October.
- 55:06It's, it's a franchise that should have sequels.
- 55:11Ryan, it's, um,
- 55:15Kearns: Oh,
- 55:15Jon: one missed call.
- 55:18Kearns: Okay.
- 55:18Jon: Japanese one, not the American.
- 55:23we skip American remakes.
- 55:25Um, so in this Takashi and Mikay movie, um, people receive terrifying
- 55:30voicemails from their future selves as they are violently killed.
- 55:36The call calls include the exact time and date of their deaths.
- 55:40S
- 55:41Ryan: very death note.
- 55:43Kearns: Death note
- 55:44Ryan: When did this Mo, when did
- 55:45Jon: mm-hmm.
- 55:45Ryan: come out?
- 55:46Kearns: I think predate death
- 55:48Jon: Oh three.
- 55:49Ryan: That's crazy.
- 55:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:53you get touches of the usual me kay chaos.
- 55:56But it's not, it's for him restrained,
- 56:04but it's, it's, I mean, it's definitely not completely hinged.
- 56:10number two is a classic.
- 56:15You all, everybody, knows a, line from this movie without
- 56:18knowing what movie it's from.
- 56:20The movie is when a stranger calls,
- 56:23Ryan: A great movie
- 56:25Jon: we've traced the call.
- 56:26It's coming from inside the house.
- 56:30Ryan: Such a great line.
- 56:31Jon: A psychopathic killer returns after seven years to torture the same
- 56:36babysitter with phone calls before the police trace the call and find
- 56:41it's coming from inside the house.
- 56:44Um, you have Carol Kane and Charles daring in this and
- 56:50nice, nice little creepy slice of seventies,
- 56:56which brings us to number one,
- 56:59a movie that doesn't have a sequel,
- 57:03but sadly has two remakes that get worse each time they remake it.
- 57:09And that's black Christmas.
- 57:11Ryan: The first one, not the
- 57:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 57:15Uh, and neither the first, uh, neither of the remakes, uh, a stranger.
- 57:18Called the Moaner or Real Name Billy Stocks and makes numerous
- 57:23Obste prank calls to sorority girls during Christmas break.
- 57:26Directed by Bob Clark of Porkies and a Christmas story starring Olivia
- 57:32Hussey, Udo Ki and Margot Kidder.
- 57:37Kearns: Pew Hussy.
- 57:39But all right.
- 57:40That was definitely a
- 57:41Jon: Olivia Hussy.
- 57:42Kearns: phone call
- 57:46creeps, um, everyone prank phone calls were like a real thing and not just
- 57:50Jon: Oh.
- 57:51Kearns: scams.
- 57:53Ryan: Uh, yeah, I used to, well, I pranked a couple people in my time.
- 57:57Kearns: get the ones where it's like a secret message by
- 57:59a Chinese operative to you?
- 58:01you ever gotten those voicemails?
- 58:03get them
- 58:04Ryan: No,
- 58:05Kearns: like once or twice a year.
- 58:06It goes like, it's quiet, there's a little static, and then it's like
- 58:09Manchurian candidate messages and Mandarin
- 58:12And you're like, what the frick was that?
- 58:15And then you go out and you kill your neighbor 'cause it told you to
- 58:19Ryan: I had a buddy call me as Ken Kif once.
- 58:22That was funny.
- 58:23was great.
- 58:26Kearns: No, prank calls are outta control, but All right guys, was,
- 58:30Ryan: um.
- 58:30Kearns: I
- 58:31Ryan: Before we leave, um, I know this, hold on.
