- 0:00Hello there, control your insolence and concentrate.
- 0:04It's time for Most Things Kenobi.
- 0:20Hi everyone, welcome to another episode of Most Things Kenobi, a
- 0:23podcast about Obi Wan Kenobi and all things Star Wars.
- 0:27I'm your host, Lauren. And I'm your host, Leanne.
- 0:30And this week it's leave it to grievous.
- 0:32It is sorry an episode all about Grievous.
- 0:39It's taking man like people DM Ed me about leave it to grievous
- 0:44after our last episode very. Good.
- 0:47Well, this whole episode is left.
- 0:49To him, it's catching on. Well, I think I don't know if he
- 0:56would appreciate it. He definitely wouldn't get the
- 0:58joke, obviously, but I don't think he would appreciate it
- 1:01either. And that's why we like him.
- 1:07Yeah, he's a man or a man I don't.
- 1:09You can't really say a man. A being full of rage and.
- 1:16His rage is never more applicable than these days,
- 1:20right? Like.
- 1:22Idiots. I need him just to be like in
- 1:27the corner somewhere at all times in my life, just filling
- 1:30in the blanks for me, shouting, just snide remarks, you know?
- 1:36I feel like there should be an animatronic doll that you can
- 1:40buy with a remote control. Yes.
- 1:41Hit the button whenever you need Grievous to say something.
- 1:46Do you remember the Tickle Me Elmo of the 90s?
- 1:49I do, yeah. Tickle me, Grievous, if you just
- 1:55tickle his Cyborg stomach, he says.
- 1:57Shut up, you idiot. I'm no errand boy.
- 2:05I think that would sell well. I think that's a great idea.
- 2:09Amongst our fandom, yes. Yes.
- 2:12Who needs a Black Series statue when you can have a Tickle Me
- 2:15Grievous? Yeah.
- 2:16It's way more fun. Way more.
- 2:18Anyway, actually he he was, you said, not a man, but he, I think
- 2:24he was. I think he was a male form at
- 2:28one point and he rose in the ranks to whatever the fuck he is
- 2:33when Obi Wan was. Not a human.
- 2:36Yeah, he wasn't a human, but he was sentient living creature
- 2:41that was not a Cyborg. Yeah, it was crazy.
- 2:44Dude. When I was reading about
- 2:46Grievous, first of all, the Wikipedia Wikipedia page about
- 2:51him is too long to read in one sitting.
- 2:54Yeah, it's pretty. It's there are so many chapters.
- 2:57Yeah. So many I read up to Clone Wars
- 3:00and then it's like, I've seen Clone Wars so at least I know
- 3:03that much. But like I knew nothing about
- 3:05his history. I feel like I learned a lot
- 3:07about Grievous just from what I was reading there, and it was
- 3:10really horrific. It's terrible his so he's from
- 3:15Kali and his species is Kalish, right and.
- 3:20Yes. The thing is, it doesn't sound
- 3:22like their species is very friendly in general.
- 3:25Yeah, I guess they're known for being not merciful.
- 3:29It's like their thing. Yeah, but I wonder if it's a
- 3:33case of, you know, how the the sand people are perceived as
- 3:38being rather ruthless and horrible and they're generally
- 3:43hated amongst the people of Tatooine.
- 3:45But really we learned through, I would say Boba, the Book of Boba
- 3:50Fett, that they have their own rituals, traditions, loves,
- 3:54etcetera like. Community.
- 3:56I wonder if this is just. I mean, it would have to be
- 4:00what? Hate can't drive you this much,
- 4:03can it? Question.
- 4:06Kind of reminded me of Vikings in a way, like real historical
- 4:11Vikings, because the whole idea is it's a warrior culture.
- 4:15They value success in battle and you gain your wealth through
- 4:20success in battle and then taking, you know, spoils of war.
- 4:24Basically, it's how you were able to make your way.
- 4:26And this reminded me of that a lot that Khaleesh culture was
- 4:31they were warlords. Basically, yeah.
- 4:34And they also would keep treasures from the people that
- 4:38they conquered, which kind of explains why Grievous liked to
- 4:41collect lightsabers. Very much.
- 4:43It was cultural and he, I don't know, there was a specific war,
- 4:48right, that he kind of shined during and made a name for
- 4:51himself, yes, and became his own warlord.
- 4:55Like he was a warlord on Khaleesh before he became
- 5:00General Grievous. Well, he adopted the name of
- 5:02Grievous, which I did not know. I thought he was given it.
- 5:05I didn't know that. Either Yeah, I didn't know that
- 5:07either. He chose it himself.
- 5:08This is so. Grievous of him, like usually
- 5:14titles, nomikers, yes, those are given to you.
- 5:20He chose is, yeah. Yeah, like you do something and
- 5:24people are like a name sticks, you know?
- 5:26But like with him, he was like, oh, I like this one.
- 5:29This one's. Good.
- 5:30I'm gonna, I'm gonna take this one.
- 5:33Oh man, it's so funny. Of all the names he could have
- 5:36picked. I mean, it's a good name.
- 5:37It's a good name. It's a good name.
- 5:39There's alliteration there 'cause it's General Grievous,
- 5:44you know, but he was well respected, which I think is
- 5:49Duke. You can't compare it to Dooku,
- 5:51right? Because Dooku, so Dooku saw
- 5:53something in him potential. Of course, you're looking at it
- 5:56through the lens of someone who needs to use somebody for their
- 5:59own gain, which is the Separatist gain, etcetera.
- 6:03If he was respected amongst his people, it's much different than
- 6:07how Dooku respected him. It's the same way as like the
- 6:11minute Grievous does something wrong, he's thrown out.
- 6:14Just like Ventress, essentially. The more I read about this, the
- 6:18more when Obi Wan calls him Dooku's errand boy, the more
- 6:21true that is and Grievous was just in denial but.
- 6:25It's no, it's no surprise to me how defensive he got as well,
- 6:31because I've been known as this in my people and I've been known
- 6:34as that in my people. And he says this like I was a
- 6:37warrior long before blah blah blah.
- 6:39But it's like, yeah, I hate to break it to you Grievous.
- 6:41You're you are literally just the dog of Dooku.
- 6:45Which is how the Sith work. You know, you're basically
- 6:49always expendable. And it's naive for anyone to
- 6:52believe otherwise. It's somehow they're going to be
- 6:55powerful. It's like, yeah, until you're no
- 6:56longer necessary, you're a means to an end, always with the Sith,
- 7:01which is sad. There was something interesting
- 7:05here, though, saying that Grievous's hatred of the Jedi
- 7:08made him easily manipulate it because he he was so focused on
- 7:13that that all they had to do was offer him the opportunity, not
- 7:17even put it in his lap. But just like you might face the
- 7:20Jedi, you could kill as many Jedi as you like.
- 7:22That was like, enough for him to do whatever they asked.
- 7:25Yeah, basically. Easy.
- 7:26But do you know, did you read why he hated the Jedi even
- 7:29before Duke who came to him? Yeah.
- 7:31They intervened in that war. Yes, which I find very
- 7:35controversial in a sense because what was the war?
- 7:38It was a specific alien species that.
- 7:41Was like the praying. Mantis the yam, yes.
- 7:44Yeah. Did you see the picture of them?
- 7:46They looked like a giant praying mantis.
- 7:48I didn't see the picture. No terrifying.
- 7:51So they they were known to invade places and strip the
- 7:57locals of resources and then take the people as slaves.
- 8:01This. Is the gamry.
- 8:02Slaves the the. Yes, the praying mantis, OK.
- 8:05So grievous. His original name was something
- 8:10I can't really pronounce. It's like Kaumi and Josh Shilal.
- 8:16Yeah. Where is it?
- 8:16It. It's very Middle Eastern
- 8:18sounding. Yeah, and like Shilal was his
- 8:22yes Sir name, I guess. But they they said that he kind
- 8:25of rose in the ranks during this war.
- 8:27And then later he actually attacked the Yamri or whatever
- 8:33they're called. I hate Star Wars names.
- 8:35Like just make real names. You don't have to just put
- 8:39consonants and vows together with apostrophes and like, we
- 8:42made-up a new name. I really, it's like one of my
- 8:44biggest pet peeves. Of ours, because I kind of like
- 8:46it sometimes. Do you I?
- 8:48Just sometimes it feels like they're trying too hard.
- 8:50They. Are that's why I like it.
- 8:53It's like I see right through you.
- 8:55I get what you're doing. You're trying to make it sound
- 8:56different. Get it?
- 8:58Unpronounceable. I think it's pronounced the
- 9:03Yamry. Yes, so Grievous led his troops
- 9:07there and attacked them on their home soil as revenge.
- 9:12And then the the Republic gets involved and it's like, well,
- 9:17you can't do that. But it was OK for the Yamri to
- 9:19attack the Kelis. And.
- 9:22Put them into slavery. Like it just frustrates me
- 9:27because the Republic is a bunch of fucking hypocrites.
- 9:30Well, I feel like it in this in this regard, it's very Empire
- 9:34like what what they're doing, or at least what they gamry did.
- 9:39And then for the Republic to come in like like 10 minutes too
- 9:42late, so to speak. Yeah.
- 9:44Very often to defend the gamry who are slavers.
- 9:48And yeah, I just, the whole situation was, I mean, it's
- 9:52understandable why Grievous would hate the Jedi.
- 9:55It makes sense. Also, why is it always focused
- 9:59on the Jedi though? Why is it focused on the
- 10:01Republic as a whole? Yeah, I don't know, I guess
- 10:05maybe the Jedi were sent there to do the Republic's bidding.
- 10:10Yeah. They were kind of the don't
- 10:11shoot the messenger kind of Yeah, yeah.
- 10:14Either way it made a deep Grievous.
- 10:17He had a deep hatred of the Jedi and the Republic after that,
- 10:19which made him the perfect pawn for Duku.
- 10:22Insidious I guess The Republic put like embargoes on his home
- 10:25planet and people starved to death.
- 10:27Yeah, that's not cool. That's not cool under any
- 10:31circumstance. Poor choices at this point from
- 10:35the Republic. Poor choices.
- 10:37It's crazy too, because Grievous's planet is in the
- 10:40Outer Rim, so why did the Republic have jurisdiction
- 10:43there? That's a good question too.
- 10:45I I don't know. These are political questions we
- 10:48have no answers to. They obviously didn't have a
- 10:51senator sitting in there for for the planet.
- 10:55Yeah. So, you know, they probably
- 10:59should have just let it go, but here we are.
- 11:02I don't know. Yeah.
- 11:03Weird. I love, like, learning all of
- 11:06this about Grievous, right? And knowing what such a pain in
- 11:09the ass he is throughout the Clone Wars.
- 11:11And then when Anakin finally walks in and Revenge of the Sith
- 11:15and like delivers his line, you know it's like you met your
- 11:21match. Thought he would be taller.
- 11:23Yeah, I like that comment. Yeah, the.
- 11:24First comment out of this Jedi's mouth is a is a direct strike
- 11:30against. I just love it.
- 11:33It's this stature, yeah. Plus but all we know about the
- 11:37Clone Wars, how they like the Clone Wars series they had, they
- 11:39specifically had to keep Anakin from seeing Grievous the entire
- 11:43series based on the Revenge of the Sith scene, which I'm glad
- 11:47they did. I am too, because it it shows
- 11:50that someone's paying attention and they care enough.
- 11:52Yeah, to keep it consistent. I think that's great.
- 11:54This is the truth, yes. And because of that all we get
- 11:58is Grievous and Obi Wan the entire time in clone wars, which
- 12:01I absolutely. Love yes, I it's it's fantastic
- 12:05because Obi Wan delivers all the lines that really hit home that
- 12:11really deliver something to Grievous based on his history.
- 12:14If you really look at his history, like the long version.
- 12:17OK, I have notes up here, but the long version that you're
- 12:20referring to from Wikipedia is there's a lot of battles,
- 12:23there's a lot of loyalty, there's a lot of dedication in a
- 12:27sense to what they believe in. And then to have Obi Wan come in
- 12:32and question all of that. And then and then just like
- 12:34second guess it, right? And it make him second guess it
- 12:38right in his face. You know, Grievous had to have
- 12:40known that Dooku was a piece of shit, right?
- 12:43Or. How can I mean?
- 12:46I feel like Grievous didn't like anybody.
- 12:50It's. True, except except maybe his
- 12:53own warriors. You know, he had like a a cadre
- 12:57of bodyguards that he traveled around with before Dooku and
- 13:01that he he respected, but then everything after that he fucking
- 13:05hated. It's it's hilarious that his
- 13:10entire army, he's surrounded by droids.
- 13:13There's nobody alive except for Dooku, who's.
- 13:16Yeah. In his sphere of influence, it's
- 13:20like. And he hates droids.
- 13:23He absolutely hates them. Honestly, Wikipedia is sometimes
- 13:29not super well written. So there was like a few segments
- 13:32that I was trying to read. I'm like, I don't understand
- 13:34what you're trying to say here, but it sounds like when Duke or
- 13:38Duke, when Grievous awoke after his final surgery or whatever to
- 13:42become an Android and he realized what he looked like,
- 13:45yeah, he was kind of horrified, killed everybody who was
- 13:48present. I don't know what that's in
- 13:50reference to. But then later he says that he's
- 13:54happy, like he made this choice, like this is his choice, and
- 13:57he's more powerful than ever to be mostly Android.
- 14:01Was it not? Did you also read this?
- 14:04In his history he allowed the very beginning cybernetic
- 14:08enhancements. It was never supposed to end up
- 14:12like it did Duku and and the whole Sith.
- 14:17You know that whole background there allowed him to make or
- 14:21offered to give him enhancements.
- 14:23Yeah, which I was like, is it the precursor to Vader?
- 14:26Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was thinking, were they
- 14:30testing all of this in hopes that one day they would be using
- 14:34on a much better subject, a more powerful subject?
- 14:38Yes, I, I feel like yes. And it just ended up having to
- 14:41be Anakin Skywalker. I don't think that was City's
- 14:43intention. He wanted Anakin to be Anakin.
- 14:46Yes, full power, no limitations. Yeah.
- 14:48And this, it just happened that he had this technology prepared
- 14:52so he was able to create Vader's suit and everything.
- 14:55Yeah. As a result.
- 14:56But they said that, you know, Anakin as Vader was in constant
- 15:00pain. And they said Grievous was also
- 15:02in constant pain. I just don't understand how you
- 15:04couldn't be. It's not meant to be like, I
- 15:08don't know. So the only things that were, I
- 15:10guess flesh about Grievous after the final when he crashed or
- 15:15whatever, his, his, his ship or something.
- 15:18That's what led to this, the big enhancement, the big final
- 15:21product. Dooku arranged for he sabotage
- 15:26Grievous's ship. Grievous had a horrible crash
- 15:29and died basically. And Duku said like we can save
- 15:35you but we have to like change everything.
- 15:38So he basically tricked Grievous into the full transformation and
- 15:41then told Grievous that the Jedi sabotaged his ship.
- 15:45But really, it was Duku who did it.
- 15:47See, and that's what forced him into the final round of becoming
- 15:51a basically a full Android. So the only things that were
- 15:56flesh were parts of his face, his eyes, his brain.
- 16:01They were able to keep, I mean, after that.
- 16:03Parts of it, but they. Kept the part of his brain that
- 16:07kept the anger. Well, they said that actually
- 16:11the transformation made his aggression even stronger and
- 16:15like. I would guess so.
- 16:17It sounded like over time his mind even weakened a bit because
- 16:23it's it's more like the robot part was taking over more and
- 16:27more and he only had like room for very small emotions.
- 16:30Like it was only like rage is what was left.
- 16:34So really Obi Wan trying to reason or throw anything at the
- 16:39dart board there of Grievous is just was in folly because.
- 16:44Is not going to work. It's not going to work.
- 16:47I have. I copied over all the changes
- 16:51that Grievous went through, Yeah.
- 16:52Let's hear it and. It is.
- 16:53It's crazy. After accepting Dooku's
- 16:56invitation, Grievous sacrificed practically all of his physical
- 17:00body. His nerve endings, Yeah.
- 17:05And then they increased his strength and speed.
- 17:09But like the the practical part of it is that Grievous's brain
- 17:13was altered without his knowledge in order to make him
- 17:16smarter and faster. His memory center was also
- 17:19tinkered with to suppress memories of his past, to
- 17:22concentrate more, and to increase his aggression.
- 17:26Wow. His remaining like the like you
- 17:28said, the remaining parts of his body that were him were
- 17:31basically only his eyes, portions of his brain, his bone
- 17:37marrow, spinal cord, God, his lungs and his liver.
- 17:41Because remember, everyone shot him in the heart.
- 17:43So it also his his cold heart, quote UN quote.
- 17:47And then portions of his digestive system were required
- 17:49to maintain his organic elements.
- 17:51But he didn't like eat really. Yeah, interesting.
- 17:56And he was encased in a geranium alloy body for the rest of his
- 17:59life. That's fucking nuts.
- 18:01It's nice he. Also had an ultrasonic
- 18:04vocabulator that apparently was pretty close to his original
- 18:08voice, but it was not his, like, physical vocal box, you know,
- 18:12vocal cords. His spinal cord carried signals
- 18:16to and from his robotic limbs as well as his remaining organs.
- 18:19Millions of pinpoint electrodes were inserted into his brain
- 18:23from the lighting of his helmet to monitor brain activity and
- 18:26improve his nerve signal timings.
- 18:29So it's just like kind of horrific, like when you get down
- 18:32into it. I mean.
- 18:35And now that originally in the The Clone Wars miniseries, they
- 18:39said his cough was from Mace Windu, like squeezing his lungs
- 18:43with the Force. But now in Canon, they're saying
- 18:46that, like, these cybernetic things basically weakened his
- 18:50lungs and like, irritated his organs, and that's what gave him
- 18:53a cough. When did Mace do that?
- 18:57It's like the battle of Hypouri. I think it's one of the like
- 19:01it's in the micro series, not in like the 3D animation.
- 19:06OK, but that's not considered Canon anymore, I don't think.
- 19:10Because I could totally see Mace doing this.
- 19:13Squeeze the one functioning bodily thing you have.
- 19:18That's ruthless. That's ruthless.
- 19:22But it's smart, I guess against Grievous.
- 19:26Interesting. But we all know the cough is
- 19:29because of. Didn't George Lucas have a cough
- 19:31at the time? He was trying to do all this
- 19:33when he was? Yes, I think swimming and they
- 19:37like it's his actual he had like pneumonia or something and they
- 19:40they recorded his actual. Cough.
- 19:42It's just sad. Gross.
- 19:43And like, I love it. It's a wet, lungy cough.
- 19:47As someone who had bronchitis like chronic bronchitis in her
- 19:50childhood, I feel accepted. You're being represented in
- 19:57Grievous. Thanks Grievous.
- 19:59Leave it to Grievous. Oh man, we forgot to whistle the
- 20:04the intro. I can't though.
- 20:06I can't do it. I can't whistle.
- 20:09I can whistle but not to a tune like.
- 20:12No, it's better than I sometimes when I go to whistle, like
- 20:20nothing comes out. I'm like, how do you not end up
- 20:23whistling? Really don't know.
- 20:27My mom is one of the people who whistles through her teeth,
- 20:30which that I don't understand. Like she does that with her.
- 20:34I'm trying to do it, you guys can't.
- 20:35See, on purpose she can do it. Oh.
- 20:37Yeah, there's a there's someone in my workplace who can whistle
- 20:39through his teeth too. I don't get that but.
- 20:42You got to ask them if they can like, work out an old prospector
- 20:46impersonation where they whistle through their teeth when they
- 20:50talk. Yeah, I'll do that right after
- 20:53we record. So of the cyborgs, we have
- 21:00Grievous Mall and then Vader. Yes, like the top three I would
- 21:06say in. Dream team.
- 21:08Yeah, the dream this. Is cybernetic dream team.
- 21:12Oh my God, they would not get along at all.
- 21:15They would just hate each other. At least so I find it
- 21:20interesting because were any of this is a this is a question
- 21:24that may or may not have an answer.
- 21:25I'm just posing it because I'm thinking about it.
- 21:28So Grievous had things the sensors in his brain and they
- 21:32were adjusting it whoever they is who I'm guessing Dooku and
- 21:36and the top the top tier. Who knows?
- 21:39Yeah, like whoever runs their servers.
- 21:42Was it remote adjustments? I find it that interesting
- 21:46because was that also planned for the future Vader of whoever
- 21:51the future Vader was going to be?
- 21:53I mean if we go with that theory right, were they also going to
- 21:56try and pre program or adjust programming because.
- 22:02Probably. I mean they, there's a part in
- 22:04this research where I learned about the what are they?
- 22:07They're like manga droids or something like that.
- 22:10I can't find their actual name here, but you know the droids
- 22:13that have the staff and they wear a Cape.
- 22:16Oh, yeah, yes, yeah. They're actually based on Dooku
- 22:20or dooku on Grievous's people. Like, that's why they wear the
- 22:24head wrap and the Cape. It's based on his traditional
- 22:28cultural dress. Yeah, I know that he hated
- 22:31working with droids. He was.
- 22:32Apparently before he worked with Dooku, he was Grievous was
- 22:35working for the Banking Clan. Yeah.
- 22:37And was supposed to lead their droids.
- 22:39I'm not surprised by that either.
- 22:42He hated them so much that he kind of helped them develop this
- 22:45prototype, which became this, you know, super killing machine
- 22:49Droid. But he programmed them.
- 22:52He's the one who taught them how to fight.
- 22:54Interesting. And that's what caught Sidious
- 22:57attention actually more than anything else.
- 22:59Is like his initiative there. Yeah.
- 23:01But if he can program his training into the droids,
- 23:05imagine what else is possible. And like what they programmed
- 23:09into Grievous? Yeah.
- 23:11And, you know, part of his lightsaber combat and, like,
- 23:14training with Dooku makes me wonder, was any of that
- 23:17programmed into him? Did he just learn it because
- 23:20he's that good of a warrior? He was, in my opinion, he's not
- 23:23that good at lightsaber combat. He just is deadly because he
- 23:27can. Yeah.
- 23:28He can hold a lot of them. And he's got brute force.
- 23:31Yeah, but it's not, it's it's exactly what Obi Wan said.
- 23:36It's no heart, no spirit, right. So it's predictable.
- 23:40Yeah, to answer your question. Right.
- 23:43Well, yeah, it says here that he was.
- 23:47The reconstructed Grievous became a skilled lightsaber
- 23:50duelist. Skilled in what way?
- 23:52As a Droid, we have Vader, who was a Jedi once.
- 23:56He has the limitations of a Cyborg or cybernetic body of in
- 24:00some ways he had a lot more flesh.
- 24:03Left. Right.
- 24:04But his suit also limited him from, you know, the full arm up.
- 24:10He had to swing it from shoulder length and down because he
- 24:13couldn't bring it up. Which I always found that
- 24:16fascinating that somehow Vader was able to adapt to that and
- 24:20still be just as fucking lethal. You know, take away 25% of your
- 24:24range of motion and you're still just as good.
- 24:26Like that's So I do wonder if he was just that good compared to
- 24:31the different versions of Grievous And and even with full
- 24:34range of motion his cybernetics kept him worse off than a pre
- 24:39trained used to be Jedi who also just runs on malice now.
- 24:43Ivan Also the Jedi have the Force.
- 24:45So, Anakin. I'm completely I forgot about
- 24:49that think. About how it would help you
- 24:52anticipate your opponent. Grievous doesn't have that at
- 24:56all, and it was actually one of the things Grievous hated about
- 24:59the Jedi. But there were cowards because
- 25:01they used the Force to enhance their fighting ability.
- 25:05And he was powerful with the lightsaber.
- 25:07Without the Force, it's like, yeah, but anyone can learn to
- 25:11wield it. But the lightsabers we know are,
- 25:14like, part of the Jedi's bodies. You know, the Force makes it,
- 25:18like, an extension of their body.
- 25:20So as good as Grievous could be, he would never be better than
- 25:24the most powerful Jedi. No, because sheer brute isn't
- 25:27going to make you win anything when you have when you're
- 25:32connected to an actual force lowercase F, you know you have
- 25:37something going through you into the lightsaber out to your
- 25:40opponent. Just because you're bigger and
- 25:42stronger and you have enhancements will not mean that
- 25:45you're going to automatically win any dual.
- 25:48And honestly, we see that with Grievous because he's sloppy.
- 25:51He just throws and hacks. And it's like a Jedi when they
- 25:54are disconnected from the force, when they let their emotions
- 25:56take over. We see it with, well, Anakin,
- 25:59but like Obi Wan all the time when he's disconnected from his
- 26:02control through the Force then he becomes sloppy and erratic.
- 26:05Yeah, yeah, and that's just grievous all the.
- 26:09Time, and that's just Grievous at his baseline.
- 26:12Yeah, it's true. I think that's a really good
- 26:16point. And looking at his duels with
- 26:18Obi Wan is really fun. There's actually nine of them in
- 26:21Canon. Two of them are from comic books
- 26:23that I have not read, so I don't really know about those as well.
- 26:27But all of the other ones except for Revenge of the Sith, are all
- 26:31in the Clone Wars. And there are moments where Obi
- 26:33Wan's the winner at moments where Grievous is the winner or
- 26:38will just escape, you know, escape.
- 26:40This depends. Yeah.
- 26:41And it's a lot of times it's not necessarily that Grievous was
- 26:47more skilled if he comes out as the victor, so to speak.
- 26:51Obviously neither of them ever fully succeeded because they
- 26:54would have killed one or the other or taken the other one
- 26:57into custody permanently or whatever.
- 27:00And that doesn't happen until Revenge of the Sith.
- 27:02But again, as everyone now argues, the way Obi Wan kills
- 27:06him, it's like so anticlimactic. It really is.
- 27:10Now that you've added all these eight other duels between them
- 27:14and that's how he kills them. And knowing that he has all
- 27:18these brain enhancements. Yeah, and knowing how proud
- 27:21Grievous was of wanting to defeat a Jedi using a
- 27:26lightsaber, like what the fuck, George?
- 27:31Obi Wan shoots him with a blaster and something I thought
- 27:35was really crazy and now makes sense, they said that Grievous's
- 27:39heart was really his heart and apparently his species organs
- 27:43were really flammable. Flammable.
- 27:46Yeah, like why when Obi Wan shot him with a blaster it burst into
- 27:50flames and like exploded. OK.
- 27:53Crazy. Yeah, I'm sure that was written
- 27:56in after the fact. She explained that but.
- 27:58I'm down with that because that's that's different, but
- 28:02what kind of I'm at a loss. Made-up sulfur.
- 28:07It's like, I don't know what body would make itself that way.
- 28:11If that's a threat you'd have to live, keep out of reach, you
- 28:17know, like, well, maybe. If you have skin it's OK, it
- 28:20protects you from that, but I. Guess I don't know that that
- 28:24doesn't seem like a smart thing for a body.
- 28:27An organic body I. Think evolution would be smarter
- 28:31than that, but I. Mean you can't cook food without
- 28:34fire, right? Some heat source, maybe.
- 28:37Not a flame. Yeah, I guess maybe in.
- 28:39Star Wars It's different than what?
- 28:41I'm thinking, that's what I'm thinking.
- 28:43I'm doing too much science over here.
- 28:45It's it's fucking made-up. I got to remind myself this.
- 28:52Well I I don't know, I really love all the and the duels
- 28:55between Obi Wan and Grievous. There's some of the best in the
- 28:58entire. Series.
- 28:59If I had to pick my favorite it'd be so difficult.
- 29:02I really do love the one in ARC Troopers where they're on
- 29:06Camino. Yes, yes, yes.
- 29:11That one's always enjoyable, but then also the grievous intrigue
- 29:16is also one of my favorites cuz it's not just it's like a good
- 29:20long dual, but there's also like great banter during this is
- 29:24really. The reason I appreciate Grievous
- 29:26so much is considering everything we've just talked
- 29:29about and knowing that Dooku is a piece of shit underneath
- 29:33Palpatine who is a greater piece of shit, that Grievous never
- 29:37lost his snark and was not afraid to like grumble in return
- 29:43of whatever do like he was. Obviously he respected Dooku
- 29:48enough to do his bidding, but he also didn't.
- 29:51He gave 0 fucks when it came down to talking back to Dooku in
- 29:55a way. So yeah, Dooku and them knew
- 29:58what they were getting and they didn't mind.
- 30:01Even if he did like talk back or sass or grumble or any of the
- 30:07things we know Grievous about. I do appreciate the fact that he
- 30:11still, despite all of the enhancements, they didn't bother
- 30:18to fix that. They didn't bother to change
- 30:20that. He just kept that part of him.
- 30:22If he was an arrogant being prior to all this, he continued
- 30:28to be that. Good for him, you know.
- 30:31Onward and upwards, grievous, But never lose.
- 30:34Never lose yourself. Never lose the parts of you that
- 30:36make you you. Well, it's funny you say this
- 30:42because it kind of reminds me of Layer of Grievous.
- 30:46Yeah. Which is like the first time I
- 30:47saw that creep the hell out of me.
- 30:49It's pretty, but he. Has statues of himself yes there
- 30:53that like like represent different stages of his life and
- 31:00I guess part of it is a bit of grief too because he's lost part
- 31:04of that but like there's all these different statues making
- 31:08Grievous look super terrifying. First of all, he's holding like
- 31:12some severed head in one of them and then the others, he's
- 31:15started to change into cybernetics as he goes on.
- 31:18And it's like, it's this temple to himself where he can go and
- 31:22get rebuilt if he's damaged bad enough.
- 31:24But he's got his pet animal there.
- 31:27He's got his little surgical Droid and all these statues
- 31:30commemorating himself. It's it's just like the biggest
- 31:36ego castle you've ever seen. I love it.
- 31:43I appreciate that about him. I think it's horrible.
- 31:46I think he's a piece of shit, but fan club party of 1, you
- 31:51know, like, but if we take a more human humane route, if they
- 31:58erased parts of his memories that he didn't remember, you
- 32:02know, his past like you said, then maybe it's a construct to
- 32:06help him never forget he was a great, you know, blah blah blah.
- 32:11But really, I think it's just ego.
- 32:15He's an egomaniac, and it takes one to know one with Sidious, so
- 32:19he knows exactly how to manipulate him and get him to do
- 32:24everything he wants, and then he's completely expendable.
- 32:28Once Duhu is killed, Grievous naturally is the next in line
- 32:33and Sidious wastes no time in disclosing his location to the
- 32:37Jedi and having him attacked and basically killed and just that's
- 32:42it. And, and the thing that's
- 32:44interesting is without Clone Wars, Grievous was in Star Wars
- 32:48for like 5 minutes. I know, I take that back because
- 32:51holy fuck that that fight took like 45 minutes.
- 32:56I mean, but really, you know what I mean.
- 32:58Yeah. Percentage wise, yes.
- 33:01Yeah. What happened to the statues
- 33:03after he died, I wonder? I hope City has kept them
- 33:07because they were amazing in their gruesomeness.
- 33:10Yes, I hope they were preserved in some fashion.
- 33:15Maybe Thrawn took them as art. He took at least one.
- 33:20I'm thinking he took at least one.
- 33:23Yeah, that's a good point. That's something Thrawn would be
- 33:25into, even though it's he can't use it but.
- 33:29It makes me laugh too. My Grievous is lair is like he's
- 33:33got all this power and he could probably choose whatever he
- 33:35wants and he wants a cave in the side of the a hole in the wall
- 33:40where he's got no windows, just like how Vader chooses to live
- 33:44in an active volcano. What's wrong with these people?
- 33:49Duke was the only one with like style and class and like I'm
- 33:52gonna have a mansion on a beautiful mountain.
- 33:54It's. True, he does have a, he has a
- 33:56nice crib. But like, I think it's great
- 33:59that Grievous doesn't want any windows.
- 34:01Why bother? Yeah, it's lost on him totally.
- 34:06Unless there's like a Jedi on the other side, he's not going
- 34:08to look out a window. There's no way Grievous is ever
- 34:11going to look out a window and think, wow, that's a beautiful
- 34:14sunrise. It's just not happening.
- 34:17It's it's true. Fuck the sunrise and this
- 34:21planet. Where's the where's what we
- 34:23want? I love Grievous in his own
- 34:30demented way. He's a very entertaining
- 34:33character and a bit tragic, you know, I feel sorry for him.
- 34:36You know, all of these people, all of these characters who end
- 34:41up underneath Palpatine in some fashion through Dooku or other,
- 34:47they're all tragic. It's all tragic.
- 34:50They're misled, they're misguided.
- 34:52They're they're brainwashed in a sense.
- 34:54They're played for what they are.
- 34:57They're played against each other in some ways.
- 34:59I mean, the only living example we have that that succeeded in
- 35:03getting out was venturous, you know?
- 35:07She was lucky she was like lower on the tiers because it made it
- 35:10possible for her to escape I think.
- 35:12But she still kept that that tinge of like a hard shell that
- 35:17seems to come with being underneath Dooku and, and
- 35:20through these various levels, through Palpatine.
- 35:23You know, underneath Palpatine. It's just.
- 35:25It's just a large scale abusive relationship is what.
- 35:29It is. Yeah, I mean, they they take
- 35:31their weaknesses or their pain or their past suffering and they
- 35:36manipulate it into making them feel strong.
- 35:40But if they if like if Sidious felt the slightest hint that
- 35:44someone was going a little too far, getting a little too
- 35:47strong, he would use those weaknesses to bring them back
- 35:49down again. It's gross.
- 35:51This is. It's so depressing but very
- 35:57fascinating at the same time. It is it's it's, it's
- 36:00interesting to to see how these characters came up and how did
- 36:04they get here, How did they get to this point?
- 36:07And Grievous pretty much volunteered for most of it, so.
- 36:11Yeah, or it's like my big fat Greek wedding where the the wife
- 36:16is like where the neck that turns the head, the man is the
- 36:18head of the house, but the woman is the neck that turns the head.
- 36:21I feel like Grievous thinks he made the decision himself, but
- 36:25Dooku insidious like were the neck that turned the head,
- 36:28that's it, and just helped him along to make the decision.
- 36:31Like, he was angry already, but yeah, they appealed to his
- 36:35hatred, and he was more than willing to be Dooku's errand boy
- 36:39if it meant he could kill Jedi and have power.
- 36:42And like, power over what? Droids?
- 36:44Was that? Satisfying, that's what.
- 36:46Obi Wan asked him what do you have to show for all your power,
- 36:49what have you to gain? And he said a future, a future
- 36:52where there are no Jedi. He kind of predicted the future
- 36:55there, but. I imagine that the Grievous had
- 36:57survived and there are no Jedi. What would he do next?
- 37:00What next is the? Question.
- 37:02He would hate some other level of being because yeah, that's
- 37:05just the way of it. That's the deep root or the
- 37:08problem, yeah. A person like that can never
- 37:10really be satisfied so. Fits right in with the Sidious
- 37:15and company. Yeah, idiots.
- 37:18That's. The perfect ending.
- 37:22That's the perfect way to end that one.
- 37:32OK, so our question for you, what is your favorite Grievous
- 37:36moment? And if it's Obi Wan oriented, we
- 37:39would love that, but it doesn't have to be.
- 37:40Right. It's just most things Kenobi
- 37:42here. So, you know, we like Obi Wan
