- 0:21Ron Meyers: I'm on the road today, friends, in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
- 0:25Ron Meyers: My guest is alive because somebody died.
- 0:29Ron Meyers: A double lung transplant, a second chance, and today the clearest picture of grace you'll ever hear.
- 0:36Ron Meyers: Hello, my friends, and welcome to Get the Hell Out of Your Life.
- 0:40Ron Meyers: Real stories, real struggles, and real hope.
- 0:43Ron Meyers: This show is for people who may not go to church.
- 0:47Ron Meyers: Maybe you've been hurt by religion, disappointed by Christians, or you simply wonder if God still works in broken places.
- 0:55Ron Meyers: My personal goal is simple to brag on Jesus.
- 1:00Ron Meyers: To share real raw redemption outside of a building.
- 1:04Ron Meyers: And today's conversation carries the weight of life itself.
- 1:08Ron Meyers: What happens when somebody dies so you can live?
- 1:13Ron Meyers: Our guest today, Lisa, knows the answer to that question in a deeply personal way.
- 1:19Ron Meyers: After a terminal diagnosis and years of struggle, she found herself living on oxygen, barely breathing, hanging between hope and heartbreak.
- 1:30Ron Meyers: Then the call came a donor match, a double lung transplant.
- 1:35Ron Meyers: Somebody else's death became the doorway to her survival.
- 1:40Ron Meyers: And as powerful as that story is physically, it points us toward an even deeper spiritual truth.
- 1:48Ron Meyers: Jesus came to earth, lived among us, died on a cross, and rose from the dead so that we could truly live not just someday in heaven, but spiritually, alive right now, free, forgiven, restored, breathing again on the inside.
- 2:07Ron Meyers: Today's episode is also about recovery, addiction, trauma, broken families, absent fathers, shame, and the pain that silently drives people toward destructive choices.
- 2:19Ron Meyers: And if you're hanging on by a thread today, there's a phrase in this interview that may help you breathe again one event at a time.
- 2:30Ron Meyers: So settle in because this conversation might be the miracle you have been I'm on the road today in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
- 2:41Ron Meyers: I'm at Stillwaters, a transitional home, and I'll be talking with the owners, Ricky and Lisa Charlton.
- 2:48Ron Meyers: Lisa, I love this place.
- 2:50Ron Meyers: Will you tell the listeners what Still Waters is?
- 2:54Lisa Charlton: Still Waters is a 501c3 nonprofit charity, and we are a transitional house for individuals coming out of treatment or jail or in drug court.
- 3:08Lisa Charlton: We have people coming out of prison that are here, and we've been doing it since 2006, is when we first started.
- 3:16Lisa Charlton: I had Joanne Bird from Drug Court call me and wanted to know she had a client who had nowhere to go.
- 3:22Lisa Charlton: And I actually knew the girl.
- 3:23Lisa Charlton: I used to buy drugs from her.
- 3:25Lisa Charlton: And I had been clean.
- 3:28Lisa Charlton: So she called me.
- 3:30Lisa Charlton: And of course, Ricky is a licensed commercial contractor, and this was right after Hurricane Katrina.
- 3:36Lisa Charlton: And so we were doing a lot of construction work.
- 3:38Lisa Charlton: And so this whole upstairs, I said, Ricky, let's let's open up a teening salon.
- 3:44Lisa Charlton: So he built all those little individual rooms up here.
- 3:48Lisa Charlton: And this had been going on for about a year, and we had started getting overwhelmed with construction work.
- 3:56Lisa Charlton: And when I got that call from Joanne, we had already started an aftercare group over here at Riverside Baptist Church for the drug court people because they were having to go all the way to Green County for their aftercare.
- 4:12Lisa Charlton: And so, you know, we had already made that connection, and Ricky and I talked about it, and I said, let's just why don't we just get rid of this tanning salon and make these rooms for women?
- 4:25Lisa Charlton: Wow.
- 4:25Lisa Charlton: And that's what we did.
- 4:27Ron Meyers: I mean, you've been doing it for 20 years.
- 4:28Lisa Charlton: Yes.
- 4:29Ron Meyers: Wow.
- 4:30Ron Meyers: So it's dear to your heart because you said a minute ago you've dealt with addiction.
- 4:35Lisa Charlton: Both Ricky and I both have.
- 4:37Lisa Charlton: Mine started fairly young, had an alcoholic father who was absent.
- 4:42Lisa Charlton: He worked overseas.
- 4:44Lisa Charlton: When we traveled, there were seven of us, and we would go, you know, we've lived all over the world.
- 4:49Lisa Charlton: My mother would give us volume.
- 4:51Lisa Charlton: Alcoholics Anonymous, and I I understand it now.
- 4:54Lisa Charlton: It's taken many years to get a grasp on, you know, to reconcile this condition with what I knew physically and mentally, what I was bound with, with my spiritual life.
- 5:08Lisa Charlton: It's been a long journey from, you know, under coming out of the confines of the Catholic Church.
- 5:14Lisa Charlton: And there were so many good things I took from that, but there was also a lot of questions I was left with.
- 5:19Lisa Charlton: And so at the age of 17, I ended up first treatment center, was the East Mississippi State Hospital.
- 5:28Lisa Charlton: And I had a spiritual experience there that completely revolutionized me.
- 5:34Lisa Charlton: I just surrendered my life to God.
- 5:37Ron Meyers: You met Jesus.
- 5:38Ron Meyers: Amen.
- 5:39Lisa Charlton: I mean, I was literally flooded with a light that I could not explain.
- 5:44Lisa Charlton: And that same day, my mother came to pick me up from there.
- 5:48Lisa Charlton: It was horrible.
- 5:49Lisa Charlton: I mean, you want to talk about a demonic place.
- 5:52Lisa Charlton: Things started falling into place.
- 5:55Ron Meyers: So when you have this spiritual experience and God just Jesus comes into your life.
- 6:01Ron Meyers: Yes.
- 6:02Lisa Charlton: So there are some things that I think are so embedded in us as human beings that it takes a lifetime to purify for whatever God has consecrated us for.
- 6:16Lisa Charlton: And I I never under, I hate, I did not like that we are to be holy.
- 6:23Lisa Charlton: You know, we say that in scripture.
- 6:25Lisa Charlton: And I just shy, I just it left such a bad taste in my mouth because I knew I could never achieve that.
- 6:32Ron Meyers: But you know, when you talk to people now, it seemed like every family, every person, you know, has somebody that is addiction.
- 6:42Ron Meyers: Even beyond that, is it just so much pressure in the world?
- 6:45Ron Meyers: What's your thoughts of what leads person to addiction?
- 6:49Lisa Charlton: I think it is there's no family.
- 6:51Lisa Charlton: No family, I think it's certainly no fathers.
- 6:54Lisa Charlton: You know, and you've got children.
- 6:57Lisa Charlton: I know when I worked at the home of grace, the level of dysfunction in some of those, I mean, we had girls that came there that were prostituted by their mothers at the age of 13, 14 years old for their own drug money, drug hack hack.
- 7:12Lisa Charlton: You know, I think that there is value in redemption, that God recycles it and it has a per there's a purpose for it.
- 7:21Lisa Charlton: You know, it's like that word holy.
- 7:24Lisa Charlton: I was talking about, you know, there there are things that I have learned in doing this where God has healed me as I'm healing other people.
- 7:32Lisa Charlton: That holy does not mean I'm perfect, it does not mean I'm this, it does not mean I'm that.
- 7:37Lisa Charlton: Anything that is pulled and consecrated for the purposes of God becomes holy.
- 7:44Lisa Charlton: He told Moses, take off your shoes because you're standing on holy ground.
- 7:50Lisa Charlton: That ground was consecrated for the purposes of God, and so therefore it's holy.
- 7:56Ron Meyers: So you're living out what is your purpose, you feel your purpose, your destiny.
- 8:01Ron Meyers: I agree too.
- 8:02Ron Meyers: But to somebody listening, maybe their child or their family members dealing with addiction, and they haven't hit, you know, the freedom yet that you have, what would you tell that person?
- 8:15Lisa Charlton: I would tell that person to never give up, to reach out, to to go where the light is.
- 8:21Lisa Charlton: Wherever you're you find the light of God, you go there and you you pray.
- 8:27Lisa Charlton: You don't give up because God does not abandon his children.
- 8:31Lisa Charlton: And I know, you know, I know for me, and I I believe for Ricky as well, that there is a legacy of faith that God honors.
- 8:40Lisa Charlton: Yeah, I had praying parents, I had to pray as for as dysfunctional as they were, they lifted their hearts up on my behalf.
- 8:48Ron Meyers: I've had many guests tell me that they know they are alive today because of the prayers of their mothers or grandmothers.
- 8:57Ron Meyers: And so prayer is very important, isn't it?
- 9:00Lisa Charlton: I remember at my mother's funeral, there was a nun that taught me she knew in elementary school, and she was so glad to see me doing well, you know, and she said, I have calluses on my knees praying for you.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Wow.
- 9:19Lisa Charlton: That your mother asked me to pray for you.
- 9:21Lisa Charlton: And I believe that.
- 9:23Lisa Charlton: I believe God honors that.
- 9:24Lisa Charlton: He doesn't see religion, he does, he's not Baptist, he's not Catholic, he's not, but he searches the hearts of people, and you know, the pure prayers get answered.
- 9:35Lisa Charlton: And so I would say to somebody, you know, reach out for help and know that there's hope.
- 9:41Lisa Charlton: This is not a, you know, I was not a bad person trying to get good, I was a sick person trying to get well, you know, and Jesus said, I did not come for the well, I came for the sick.
- 9:53Lisa Charlton: And so there's a lot of comfort in that.
- 9:56Lisa Charlton: There's a lot of where I can just drop my guard and and say, Okay, here I am.
- 10:04Lisa Charlton: I need all the help I can get from you.
- 10:06Lisa Charlton: And he really is the only one who can bring that about.
- 10:10Lisa Charlton: However, he does it.
- 10:12Lisa Charlton: God uses, he's got people tucked all over the place doing his will, and they're the most random people.
- 10:19Ron Meyers: Right.
- 10:20Ron Meyers: Yeah, I agree.
- 10:21Ron Meyers: Well, you did a good job.
- 10:23Lisa Charlton: I think it's wonderful what you're doing.
- 10:25Ron Meyers: Yeah, you're a happy person.
- 10:26Ron Meyers: I like that.
- 10:27Lisa Charlton: I am very happy.
- 10:28Lisa Charlton: I actually had a double lung transplant two years ago.
- 10:31Lisa Charlton: You had a double lung transplant?
- 10:33Lisa Charlton: Yes, two years ago.
- 10:34Lisa Charlton: I was still working at the home of graves.
- 10:36Lisa Charlton: My goodness.
- 10:37Lisa Charlton: And I I told Shaleen something's not right, and I had to find out what was wrong, and I was diagnosed with the terminal illness in 2020 and was put in on Oshner's program.
- 10:53Lisa Charlton: I wasn't expecting that.
- 10:57Lisa Charlton: You know, it brought me a level of wow dependence on God that I've never had to have before.
- 11:07Lisa Charlton: You know, I've always been a fighter, I'm a survivor, but there was no relying on myself in this.
- 11:14Lisa Charlton: You've got to be sick enough to be put on the list, but you've got to be well enough to survive the surgery.
- 11:21Ron Meyers: And the transplant can only come from somebody else that had died, right?
- 11:26Ron Meyers: Yes.
- 11:27Lisa Charlton: I was you've got to, you know, there, you've got to go through a whole battery of tests and and you've got to stay monitored.
- 11:35Lisa Charlton: And so my blood match, they do a what's called a panoreactive antibody test, and they put that into their donor thing and see who you're compatible with.
- 11:47Lisa Charlton: And I was only compatible, I would only be compatible with 8% of the lungs available nationwide.
- 11:54Lisa Charlton: I got put on their list in October, and by December, I was on 10 liters of oxygen continuously.
- 12:01Lisa Charlton: And so she told me, we're gonna send you out to Baylor St.
- 12:06Lisa Charlton: Luke's in Texas, or you're not gonna make it.
- 12:09Lisa Charlton: And so I went out there, and you know, you gotta do tests and get put on their list.
- 12:14Lisa Charlton: Within seven days, they called me for lungs.
- 12:18Lisa Charlton: And we went to the hospital, and you know, they immediately start, the family all started coming in, and the doctor came in and he said, I just want to tell you that we got your lungs this morning.
- 12:33Lisa Charlton: And he said, because they measure your cavity, chest cavity, they all day long they're doing stuff.
- 12:41Lisa Charlton: And he said, I just want to let you know size-wise, it's a perfect fit.
- 12:46Lisa Charlton: Wow.
- 12:47Lisa Charlton: And he said, the blood type matching is virtually a perfect match.
- 12:53Lisa Charlton: And he said, What I'm saying to you is this is nothing less than a miracle.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Wow.
- 13:00Lisa Charlton: And he said, We're gonna, you know, we're gonna get you transplanted today.
- 13:04Lisa Charlton: So I was like, What?
- 13:06Lisa Charlton: All I kept saying was.
- 13:08Ron Meyers: So you're you're on oxygen because you could hardly breathe, and now you hear that you're gonna have a whole new life.
- 13:18Lisa Charlton: I mean they take you to a little room and the doctors come up and get you.
- 13:23Lisa Charlton: And when I sat down in the chair, and I've got a picture of it.
- 13:29Lisa Charlton: When I sat down in that chair, a silver cross popped up.
- 13:34Lisa Charlton: It must have fallen.
- 13:35Lisa Charlton: Wow.
- 13:36Lisa Charlton: A silver cross popped up and literally leaned it on my leg.
- 13:41Lisa Charlton: Wow.
- 13:42Lisa Charlton: And my brother-in-law took me because my sister had just flown out that morning for her daughter's baby shower in upstate New York.
- 13:50Lisa Charlton: And so my poor brother-in-law had to take me.
- 13:54Lisa Charlton: And he said, What is that?
- 13:56Lisa Charlton: I said, Phil, it's a cross.
- 13:59Speaker 4: It's a cross.
- 14:00Lisa Charlton: And I started crying.
- 14:01Lisa Charlton: He said, I he said, What does it say?
- 14:03Lisa Charlton: And it said, God loves you.
- 14:07Speaker 4: Wow.
- 14:08Lisa Charlton: And so through the whole thing, I was he was with you.
- 14:13Lisa Charlton: Oh, I didn't know if I was gonna survive it.
- 14:16Lisa Charlton: I didn't you are in such a state, not to mention the overwhelming that you've got somebody else's who just died.
- 14:26Ron Meyers: Who just died?
- 14:27Ron Meyers: Do they tell you anything about the donor?
- 14:32Lisa Charlton: You can write their family and they pass it on.
- 14:35Lisa Charlton: And if their family wants to get in touch with you, they will.
- 14:38Lisa Charlton: And I've done that and I've not heard back.
- 14:41Lisa Charlton: And so I'm just gonna, you know, respect that.
- 14:44Lisa Charlton: Sometimes, you know, they said sometimes it's too painful.
- 14:48Ron Meyers: Do you ever just sometimes think when you you know, drinking a cup of coffee just by yourself?
- 14:54Ron Meyers: That I have somebody else.
- 14:57Lisa Charlton: Oh, it's constant.
- 14:58Ron Meyers: It's constant.
- 14:59Ron Meyers: Probably never wow.
- 15:00Lisa Charlton: And I had, you know, before this happened, I knew that somebody, you know, somebody was gonna have to die so that I could live.
- 15:10Lisa Charlton: Yeah, I don't know if it was my was making it up or what.
- 15:15Lisa Charlton: But I just had this vision of this girl with long blonde hair on the top of a hill, and there was nothing but white in front of her.
- 15:25Lisa Charlton: And she just would look back at me with a look.
- 15:30Lisa Charlton: And I felt in my heart that that was my donor.
- 15:33Lisa Charlton: I just felt, and I knew, you know, that's what I was saying.
- 15:36Lisa Charlton: You can't, this is a whole nother level of surrender.
- 15:40Ron Meyers: So when you talk to people about God, you can go to a deeper level that none of us understand because you are a miracle.
- 15:49Ron Meyers: Because you are literally a walking living miracle.
- 15:54Ron Meyers: I really am.
- 15:55Ron Meyers: Wow, no wonder you have such good faith.
- 15:58Ron Meyers: What a story.
- 16:00Lisa Charlton: Well, you ever think, ask yourself, Lord, why me?
- 16:06Lisa Charlton: Yes, I have over and over, and I've just come to the conclusion, and this is why this is why you can give somebody hope.
- 16:14Lisa Charlton: Is because when I look back on how hard it's been for me to be healed of all the things that have made me me, all the bad choices, all the bad decisions, you know, many of them were just out of desperation, jumping from one mess I made to another mess I made.
- 16:36Lisa Charlton: And somehow or another, God has been faithful to my prayers.
- 16:41Lisa Charlton: And my prayers were just, God, please help me.
- 16:43Lisa Charlton: Please don't give up on me.
- 16:46Lisa Charlton: And when I look back on all that, you know, there's nothing that makes sense other than the fact that God loves me.
- 16:55Lisa Charlton: That's it.
- 16:56Lisa Charlton: Because I did everything I could to mess it up over and over and over, just out of my own brokenness, out of my own, just like I said, I'm none of us are bad people trying to get good.
- 17:07Lisa Charlton: We're sick people trying to get well.
- 17:09Lisa Charlton: And that's the good news is that Jesus said, I did not come for the well, I came for the sick.
- 17:16Ron Meyers: So now someone listening, they just need hope.
- 17:19Ron Meyers: Give them some hope.
- 17:20Ron Meyers: Yeah, there's hope.
- 17:21Lisa Charlton: I mean, I'm sitting here, you know, as like I said, we have this morning, Ricky and I were talking, and I said, you know, the bottom line is by God's grace and mercy, I have outran and outlived all of my vices, all the sins that would destroy me.
- 17:37Lisa Charlton: No, none of the weapons that have been formed against me have been able to prosper.
- 17:42Lisa Charlton: And that's only all I did was pray.
- 17:45Lisa Charlton: That's all I did was pray and show up wherever God led me.
- 17:50Ron Meyers: Well, the title of my show is called Get the Hell Out of Your Life.
- 17:54Ron Meyers: So I'm gonna ask you how does a person get the hell out of their life?
- 18:00Lisa Charlton: One event at a time.
- 18:02Ron Meyers: One event at a time.
- 18:03Lisa Charlton: And you offer the best that you have to God, and that is enough.
- 18:07Lisa Charlton: He will take that and he will mold you, and he will, you know, like it says, the great refiner, he sits over our lives like a refiner, and he'll turn the heat up a little bit and pull some of that dross off and let it cool down, and then he'll put the fire back up again.
- 18:25Lisa Charlton: And then, you know, the the saying that when when he's done, he can look in the and see his reflection.
- 18:33Ron Meyers: Wow.
- 18:34Ron Meyers: And before we go, will you pray for the listeners out there?
- 18:37Lisa Charlton: You bet, you bet.
- 18:38Lisa Charlton: Well, Heavenly Father, I thank you so much for every ear that is coming under our voice.
- 18:44Lisa Charlton: And God, I thank you that your grace and your love and your mercy would pour through and speak to those who are lost, who are confused, who are hurting, who feel alone, who are desperate, God.
- 18:57Lisa Charlton: I thank you for the wonderfulness of your Son Jesus Christ and the story of redemption that he brings to all of our lives.
- 19:06Lisa Charlton: And Father, what a beautiful journey it is.
- 19:09Lisa Charlton: That suffering does not have to be an ugly thing.
- 19:14Lisa Charlton: It doesn't have to end ugly, that there is a wonderful beauty that comes from it when we surrender our lives to you and our hearts to you.
- 19:23Lisa Charlton: And so, Father, I thank you that you would touch the hearts of those listening and that somehow your message of hope and love and restoration gets sent forth in Jesus' holy name.
- 19:36Lisa Charlton: Amen.
- 19:40Ron Meyers: Wow.
- 19:41Ron Meyers: You know there are interviews you enjoy, and then there are interviews that stay with you long after the microphones are turned off.
- 19:50Ron Meyers: This is one of those conversations.
- 19:52Ron Meyers: Lisa's story forces us to stop and think about something most of us avoid.
- 19:58Ron Meyers: Life is fragile.
- 19:59Ron Meyers: Every breath is a gift, and sometimes we don't recognize the value of breath until we're struggling to take one.
- 20:08Ron Meyers: What struck me the most was the emotional tension she carries, gratitude that she's alive while also knowing someone else lost their life so she could receive those lungs.
- 20:22Ron Meyers: That's heavy.
- 20:24Ron Meyers: That changes you.
- 20:25Ron Meyers: But isn't that also the gospel?
- 20:29Ron Meyers: Jesus willingly laid down his life so we could live eternally.
- 20:35Ron Meyers: Not because we earn it, not because we are perfect, but because love stepped into our brokenness and made a way.
- 20:45Ron Meyers: And maybe today you feel spiritually out of breath.
- 20:50Ron Meyers: Addiction, fear, shame, anxiety, regret.
- 20:54Ron Meyers: Maybe life has knocked the wind out of you.
- 20:58Ron Meyers: Friend, hear me clearly.
- 21:00Ron Meyers: There is still hope for you.
- 21:03Ron Meyers: Hope is spelled J E S U S.
- 21:07Ron Meyers: Lisa also reminded us that recovery is rarely instant.
- 21:13Ron Meyers: Healing usually happens one event at a time, one decision at a time, one prayer at a time, one surrender at a time.
- 21:25Ron Meyers: And if someone you love is struggling right now, don't give up on them.
- 21:31Ron Meyers: Keep reaching, keep praying, keep shining light into dark places.
- 21:37Ron Meyers: Sometimes people survive because somebody refused to stop believing in them.
- 21:44Ron Meyers: That's what this show is all about.
- 21:47Ron Meyers: Encouraging and empowering people to believe that with God, your worst chapter does not have to be your final chapter.
- 21:58Ron Meyers: I will be back in a minute.
- 21:59Ron Meyers: And close out today's show.
- 22:02Announcer: You're listening to Get the Hell Out of Your Life with your host, Ron Myers.
- 22:07Announcer: Real stories, real struggles, and real hope.
- 22:13Speaker 3: Here's a refreshing word just for you today from Matthew 6.33.
- 22:17Speaker 3: But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
- 22:23Speaker 3: A refreshing word for you from God's Word.
- 22:29Speaker 4: Jesus, Jesus.
- 22:30Speaker 4: What do you think of when you hear that name?
- 22:33Speaker 4: Jesus, Jesus.
- 22:35Speaker 4: Love, life, hope, joy, joy, peace, friend, companion, confident, savior.
- 22:45Speaker 4: The God of the universe lives.
- 22:48Speaker 4: And he lives in the form of a man.
- 22:50Speaker 4: That man is Jesus Christ.
- 22:53Speaker 4: For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whosoever believes in him shall have eternal life.
- 23:01Speaker 4: Jesus.
- 23:02Speaker 4: What will you do with him?
- 23:04Speaker 4: He knocks on the door of your heart.
- 23:07Speaker 4: When you open that door, your life will change.
- 23:10Speaker 4: Forever.
- 23:12Speaker 4: It came that the world may have life and may have it more abundantly.
- 23:17Speaker 4: Ask Jesus into your heart and discover what living is all about.
- 23:22Speaker 4: Call 1-888-NeedM.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Get the hell out of your life.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Get the hell out of your life.
- 23:51Ron Meyers: My friend, before we leave today, I want you to think about this.
- 23:56Ron Meyers: You and I are only one heartbeat away from eternity.
- 24:01Ron Meyers: That's not meant to scare you.
- 24:03Ron Meyers: It's meant to wake you up.
- 24:05Ron Meyers: Lisa's story reminds us how precious life really is.
- 24:09Ron Meyers: Every breath matters.
- 24:11Ron Meyers: Every day matters.
- 24:13Ron Meyers: Every decision matters.
- 24:15Ron Meyers: Every person listening matters.
- 24:18Ron Meyers: And maybe today you've been spiritually suffocating, trying to carry pain by yourself, trying to outrun your past, trying to numb the hurt, trying to be strong while falling apart inside.
- 24:32Ron Meyers: My friend, listen to this.
- 24:34Ron Meyers: Jesus did not come to condemn you.
- 24:37Ron Meyers: He came to save you so you could live.
- 24:41Ron Meyers: The cross was not the end of the story.
- 24:44Ron Meyers: The resurrection power proved that death, addiction, shame, fear, and hopelessness do not get the final word.
- 24:54Ron Meyers: Here are a few action steps you can take away from today's show.
