Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The Effort of the Spiritual Seeker in Distinguishing the Action of the Divine Force from the Promptings of the Ego
Transcript
- 0:00A constant concern for spiritual aspirants is to distinguish the
- 0:05divine will from their own ego, personalities, desires, or
- 0:09ambitions. The vital nature has the uncanny
- 0:13ability to convince the mind that what it desires is actually
- 0:17something that can and should be justified, and once the mind
- 0:21adheres to it, the individual spends his time fulfilling the
- 0:25desires of the vital nature while feeling that he is
- 0:29carrying out the divine will. In some cases, this reaches such
- 0:34an extreme state that the individual is able to justify
- 0:38all manner of harm to others as the fulfilment of a divine
- 0:42mission. An individual recounted the case
- 0:46of a man who came to Europe from the East and took on the role of
- 0:50a leader or guide. Young people gathered around him
- 0:54and he began to justify not only taking advantage of all the
- 0:58young women for his sexual appetites, with the excuse that
- 1:02they were being given special spiritual teachings not
- 1:04available to most people. He separated wives from
- 1:09husbands, taking the wife into his intimate circle with the
- 1:13excuse that the wife had a special destiny and the husband
- 1:17was just a distraction to her. He controlled the young men who
- 1:21gathered around him through strict control of their sexual
- 1:24energies and then sending one of his cadre of young women with
- 1:29the promise of sexual favors if they worked, brought money and
- 1:34abided by this man's dictates. He also justified various forms
- 1:39of theft from business people, such as obtaining concrete or
- 1:44trees and then failing to pay for them with the excuse they
- 1:49were just ordinary people who would anyway misuse the money
- 1:54and he was serving a higher purpose.
- 1:57He eventually was caught abusing young children and sent to jail.
- 2:03History teaches us the lessons of wars, pogroms, crusades,
- 2:08oppression, slavery, and other terrors visited on humanity by
- 2:12people who believed they were carrying out the divine will.
- 2:18It is no wonder that sincere seekers question how they can
- 2:21know that they are truly acting under divine guidance rather
- 2:26than through an exacerbated eco demand generated by a feeling of
- 2:30special status in their chosen spiritual or religious path.
- 2:37The seeker has a few ways to understand the process of
- 2:40spiritual growth. First, the spiritual
- 2:43evolutionary movement brings harmony, understanding, and
- 2:48balance. Attempts to aggrandize oneself
- 2:52and take advantage of others is easily distinguished by the
- 2:56sincere seeker. The results of the spiritual
- 3:00force include the advent of peace, wideness, knowledge,
- 3:06harmony, innocence of devotion, and aspiration.
- 3:11Feelings of jealousy, envy, anger, greed, lust clearly are
- 3:16not part of this scenario and to the extent they arise, they give
- 3:21the seeker the opportunity to compare and contrast with the
- 3:26eventual goal of eliminating these disruptive emotions,
- 3:30feelings, thoughts and forces from their being as they work to
- 3:35increase the harmony of their being over a longer period of
- 3:40time. The seeker can compare how he
- 3:43reacted in the past to how he reacts today to circumstances,
- 3:49situations, potential difficulties or provocations.
- 3:54This view through the lens of time and change can aid the
- 3:58seeker in his observation of the direction of the changes that
- 4:02are taking place within him. If he is becoming wider in his
- 4:06conscious awareness, if he is acting with a deeper
- 4:10understanding and the deep sense of oneness and compassion that
- 4:14comes with that, if he is acting to be a benefit to the world,
- 4:20whether through outward signs or simply through his inward
- 4:23responses to situations, then he can use that understanding to
- 4:28continue to Orient himself to the divine process taking place
- 4:33within him. Sriorovindo outlines the
- 4:36conditions when he speaks of calm, peace, equality, faith,
- 4:43aspiration and surrender. Sriorobindo observes quote the
- 4:50conditions for following the Mother's will are to turn to Her
- 4:54for light and truth and strength to aspire that no other force
- 4:59shall influence or lead you to make no demands or conditions in
- 5:03the vital. To keep a quiet mind, ready to
- 5:06receive the truth, but not insisting on its own ideas and
- 5:10formations. Finally, to keep the psychic
- 5:14awake and in front, so that you may be in constant contact and
- 5:19know truly what her will is for the mind.
- 5:23And vital can mistake other impulsions and suggestions for
- 5:26the divine will. But the psychic once awakened
- 5:31makes no mistake. A perfect perfection in working
- 5:35is only possible after super mentalization.
- 5:39But a relative good working is possible on the lower planes if
- 5:43one is in contact with the Divine and careful, vigilant and
- 5:48conscious in mind and vital and body.
- 5:52That is a condition besides which is preparatory and almost
- 5:57indispensable for the supreme liberation.
