- 0:03Speaker 1: This is like a virgin the show where we give
- 0:09Speaker 1: keep that good Morning Angels Charlie. Wait, so I'm Charlie
- 0:21Speaker 1: but scenario Yeah, but in the reboot, Charlie is a girl.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Know when the reboot, Bosley is a girl. Oh it's Elizabeth.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Well we'll get to that. Yeah, we will get to
- 0:31Speaker 1: the bad Charlie's Angels reboot, but we're going to talk
- 0:34Speaker 1: about the good Charlie's Angels reboots, reboots, reboots, the House
- 0:41Speaker 1: Down Reboots House Down, starring Cameron Diaz, Lucy lu and
- 0:45Speaker 1: Drew Barrymore. Literally, the girls, the girl, not the dolls,
- 0:49Speaker 1: but the girls. You're about to say the dolls. They
- 0:52Speaker 1: are the dolls, and that There were a series of
- 0:56Speaker 1: dolls that were released when Charlie's Angels became a culture phenomena,
- 1:00Speaker 1: of course, and I definitely had to buy them in
- 1:02Speaker 1: secret and keep them in a shoebox in my closet.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I wasn't allowed to have dolls. That was like me
- 1:07Speaker 1: with the season six box set of Will and Grace,
- 1:10Speaker 1: I had to hide back to season six specifically I owned.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I owned no other seasons. It was just the one
- 1:16Speaker 1: that was on sale at borders. I think that is
- 1:18Speaker 1: such a great depiction of our like hit and queerness
- 1:22Speaker 1: of children. We're actually doing this episode because during our
- 1:26Speaker 1: come Dump episode someone said we should do Charlie's and
- 1:31Speaker 1: we thought that that actually deserved its own full episode.
- 1:34Speaker 1: So absolutely here we are. Don't ever say absolutely again.
- 1:38Speaker 1: So here we were to talk about it because this
- 1:43Speaker 1: is like a Virgin the show where we give yesterday's pops.
- 1:50Speaker 1: This is like a virgin show. Oh my god, I'm
- 1:52Speaker 1: going to get through it because this is like a
- 1:54Speaker 1: Virgin the show where were Fred. I need you to
- 1:59Speaker 1: leave the room getting this intro. This is like a
- 2:03Speaker 1: Virgin the show we give yesterday's pop culture, today's takes.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I'm ros damn you and I'm and I'm fr in
- 2:11Speaker 1: Toronto and we are Independent Women Part sixty nine. Absolutely
- 2:17Speaker 1: and very absolute. I get to say absolutely will kill you.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I was finally granted something I've been wishing for for
- 2:31Speaker 1: months or years, because that's how long it seems that
- 2:35Speaker 1: the current season of Drag Race has been on. Finally
- 2:38Speaker 1: we got a double elimination, although I still could have
- 2:41Speaker 1: used a triple. Yeah, I mean a triple would have
- 2:44Speaker 1: been Landmark TV. And I also still think they all
- 2:48Speaker 1: should be eliminated. Yes, of course, of course, and including
- 2:51Speaker 1: Willow Hill, including Willow. Wow, I mean listen, I actually
- 2:55Speaker 1: thought her performance on this episode was good enough. I
- 3:00Speaker 1: honestly felt like this like wasn't really the episode for
- 3:03Speaker 1: a double elimination, Like I kind of felt like Georgia
- 3:08Speaker 1: was terrible but tried and maybe should have been safe.
- 3:12Speaker 1: But like the roasts are always just you know, unwatchable. Yeah,
- 3:16Speaker 1: and I think the double elimination we're supposed to understand
- 3:19Speaker 1: is just like a consequence of the chocolate bar. Oh yeah,
- 3:26Speaker 1: of course they got to get them out somehow, because
- 3:30Speaker 1: they keep talking about like, oh my god, we're almost
- 3:33Speaker 1: at the end and there's still twelve of them left.
- 3:35Speaker 1: I love how even the queens, in a very meta
- 3:38Speaker 1: element of the show, are like when are these girls
- 3:41Speaker 1: going to get eliminated? Like even the queens are frustrated that,
- 3:44Speaker 1: like the girl four years, it's been eighty four years,
- 3:48Speaker 1: but alas we now have two eliminations. Wait, who even
- 3:52Speaker 1: won this life? It wasn't Willow who won this challenge?
- 3:55Speaker 1: Oh Bosco? Who? Yeah? Was fine? The best was the
- 4:02Speaker 1: best roast? Truly, Like a roast is not my well,
- 4:05Speaker 1: if we're talking about a roast honey um, a Sunday
- 4:09Speaker 1: roast in you know, London, England. Absolutely, get me the
- 4:14Speaker 1: Yorkshire pudding, get me the blood sausage. I want to
- 4:17Speaker 1: eat all of it um with a Scotch egg on
- 4:20Speaker 1: the side. No, I do not like roast challenges. I
- 4:24Speaker 1: think none of these girls are usually very funny. I
- 4:27Speaker 1: also want to know what they are not allowed to say,
- 4:31Speaker 1: because you know, no one made a fracking joke. I
- 4:34Speaker 1: know that would certainly be my first thing. I'm curious
- 4:38Speaker 1: to know, like what material is cleared and what you
- 4:41Speaker 1: have to improvise because when we think of in drag Race,
- 4:44Speaker 1: hisstory the worst roast of all time, which was queen like,
- 4:49Speaker 1: there's no I just forgot about Utica, which I would
- 4:57Speaker 1: like to go back to, and we'll go back to
- 4:59Speaker 1: as soon as we finished. God, okay, drag Race will
- 5:02Speaker 1: end eventually, and as soon as it does, three more
- 5:07Speaker 1: seasons will start. It's it's truly like the hydra um
- 5:11Speaker 1: of of of Greek mythology. One is defeated and three
- 5:16Speaker 1: more spring from its head, speaking of something that honestly
- 5:20Speaker 1: last way too long for its own good. The Grammys
- 5:22Speaker 1: were the last night as of the day of this recording,
- 5:25Speaker 1: all alleges have seen no proof that they happened. Um.
- 5:30Speaker 1: I still at the first I heard that they were
- 5:33Speaker 1: happening was like when we were still in the thick
- 5:36Speaker 1: of the slap discourse this week, and I was like,
- 5:40Speaker 1: there's no way that there's another big award show happening
- 5:44Speaker 1: this week, and according to you, it is true. I
- 5:49Speaker 1: still I still um am suspicious. Yes, I'll give you
- 5:54Speaker 1: um maybe at least one highlight, which is that Doja
- 5:58Speaker 1: and Sissa an Award for kiss Me More, which is
- 6:02Speaker 1: like I think pop level, and it was Doja's first Grammy,
- 6:08Speaker 1: and Dojo was late to her receiving of the Grammy
- 6:13Speaker 1: because she was taking up his, and so she ran
- 6:16Speaker 1: on stage and got up to the mic and was like,
- 6:19Speaker 1: that was like the fastest piss I've ever taken in
- 6:21Speaker 1: my entire life. And it's so funny because as Sissa
- 6:24Speaker 1: was like ascending the stage, like Gaga like pulled out
- 6:27Speaker 1: her train for her and like arranged her train, there
- 6:30Speaker 1: was like just a big, weird celebrity energy around this. Yeah,
- 6:33Speaker 1: I know, it was like the most Gaga, like I'm
- 6:35Speaker 1: just a subservient, like humble actress, like you know whatever, um,
- 6:40Speaker 1: but like it was this big explosive moment um that
- 6:42Speaker 1: just made Doja like so so adorable. And it was
- 6:45Speaker 1: also just as a clip, like a complete emotional roller
- 6:49Speaker 1: coaster because you're like, siss, it's going up, where's Doja? Wait?
- 6:52Speaker 1: What's going on? Doja so funny? And then Scissors says something,
- 6:55Speaker 1: and then Doja just bursts into tears and like crumbles
- 6:58Speaker 1: on stage and a really artful and beautiful way. It
- 7:02Speaker 1: made me so happy for her as an artist, as
- 7:04Speaker 1: someone who is like so genuinely herself. That song produced
- 7:09Speaker 1: by Dr Luke probably probably um but anyways, I I
- 7:14Speaker 1: appreciated it as like maybe a key moment from the night.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Along with a few Gaga performances, she performed Yes, She
- 7:21Speaker 1: performed for her album Love for Sale with Tony Bennett.
- 7:26Speaker 1: She did this song. It was more of like a
- 7:28Speaker 1: slow tribute that like played images of Tony Bennett in
- 7:32Speaker 1: the background as if it was like in Memoriam. Even
- 7:35Speaker 1: though I gotta see this, I think we might need
- 7:41Speaker 1: to do a live reaction right now. Let me go
- 7:45Speaker 1: to pop Crave No, it'll be there. It's funny. It's
- 7:48Speaker 1: an in memorium even though Tony Bennett is still alive,
- 7:52Speaker 1: still alive, but it's like an in memoriam of like, oh, Tony,
- 7:56Speaker 1: you can't perform anymore, but I can. Oh. Here pictures
- 8:00Speaker 1: of her with little nots X love. Here's a little
- 8:05Speaker 1: clip of her grooving to Justin Bieber. She was really
- 8:10Speaker 1: doing a lot of the Grammys, wasn't She was getting
- 8:13Speaker 1: selfies for everyone. Okay, Okay, here I found I found it.
- 8:16Speaker 1: I'm just watching the whole thing. It's a two minutes long.
- 8:19Speaker 1: It's giving a little Yeah, she and Kim should do
- 8:28Speaker 1: an album together. Okay, this is I mean, it's good,
- 8:34Speaker 1: but it's also kind of like because it's at the Grammys,
- 8:36Speaker 1: it's like, Mom, why are you embarrassing me? Yeah? I mean,
- 8:40Speaker 1: I love how much energy she put into it. And
- 8:43Speaker 1: I also just I mean, I just like, lol, I
- 8:45Speaker 1: was stoned when I watched her last night, so I
- 8:47Speaker 1: was like lolling the whole way through. I just love
- 8:49Speaker 1: how emphatic and like just Billy is a stan um.
- 8:57Speaker 1: In terms of the fashions from last night, I mean, Oskaga,
- 9:00Speaker 1: like we've seen before, she's giving like classic Hollywood stars
- 9:03Speaker 1: wearing Tiffany blue because you know, she's like a Tiffany
- 9:06Speaker 1: ambassador or whatever. I'm not sure if you saw Biber
- 9:09Speaker 1: wore this like oversized Balencia. Yeah, it was. It was
- 9:14Speaker 1: you know, giving like I shop in the big and
- 9:16Speaker 1: tall section. The tailoring was like not right. I saw
- 9:20Speaker 1: a couple of looks on TikTok and that was one
- 9:23Speaker 1: of them. It's it's I mean, it's fine. It's no
- 9:25Speaker 1: Gaga oversized sup moment. That's what I was gonna say.
- 9:28Speaker 1: I think Gaga had what he wanted. And then Billy
- 9:30Speaker 1: kind of wore a better version of what she wore
- 9:34Speaker 1: to the Oscars. Like I loved her garment, but it
- 9:36Speaker 1: also just looked a lot like what she wore to
- 9:38Speaker 1: the Oscars in terms of like shape and vibe. I
- 9:41Speaker 1: saw Crew Crazy Tigan's huge pink gown. It's like, Babe,
- 9:45Speaker 1: this is the Grammys. This is not the Oscars, and
- 9:49Speaker 1: you're not invited to the Oscars. And also fashion is
- 9:52Speaker 1: having a moment with this, like think pink like this
- 9:56Speaker 1: this funny because of that Valentino where they did all
- 10:02Speaker 1: pink yes, and like a lot of these girls are
- 10:04Speaker 1: wearing fuchia on the red carpet and I just like,
- 10:07Speaker 1: I mean, this is just my personal taste, but I
- 10:09Speaker 1: just don't like this kind of pink. But you know
- 10:11Speaker 1: who did show all the way up on the red
- 10:13Speaker 1: carpet was Joni Mitchell mother. She was yes, she presented
- 10:19Speaker 1: an a word and she looked stunning. You should google
- 10:23Speaker 1: her outfit. It's very cute. This beret so cute. She's
- 10:28Speaker 1: so cute. Oh my god, I love her. Okay, have
- 10:34Speaker 1: you been listening to anything fun this weekend? Music wise
- 10:37Speaker 1: this weekend? I on Saturday Saturday morning, I was finishing
- 10:42Speaker 1: a book and listened to Image and Heat for three hours,
- 10:45Speaker 1: which like, send help, but this is Image and Heat.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Playlist on Spotify has a lot of the music from
- 10:52Speaker 1: the Harry Potter play because I don't know if you
- 10:54Speaker 1: know that she did all the music for it. Wait
- 10:56Speaker 1: I did not know that. Yeah, so skip a lot
- 11:00Speaker 1: of that. Oh god, that sounds. I had no idea
- 11:04Speaker 1: that she did the Harry Potter musical Secrets of Dumbledore
- 11:07Speaker 1: in theaters next Friday. Oh my god, we will be
- 11:10Speaker 1: at the theater, maybe there with poppers, with Poppers in
- 11:14Speaker 1: full costume. You'll be just as s as Rita Skeeter.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Oh god. Um, Okay, I was listening to the you
- 11:26Speaker 1: imagining yourself in full Skeeter Gar Skeeter Gar. But maybe
- 11:31Speaker 1: that's what I should start wearing. Gonna go into the
- 11:33Speaker 1: office is just rita Skeeter Cosway now, so it would work? Yeah,
- 11:38Speaker 1: oh oh yeah, it absolutely would. You'd have to go
- 11:41Speaker 1: even blonder, I feel, but the horn rimmed glasses. I
- 11:45Speaker 1: do want to get new glasses. Um, what have you
- 11:47Speaker 1: been listening to? I listened to Miley's live album that
- 11:52Speaker 1: she released. Oh how was that? It was a complete
- 11:56Speaker 1: and utter surprise. I loved it like I had. Are
- 12:01Speaker 1: you a Miley Girl? Not really? I have like a
- 12:05Speaker 1: huge love for her as a vocalist. I think her
- 12:09Speaker 1: her voice is so beautiful and singular, and I just
- 12:14Speaker 1: don't feel like there's a lot of people doing what
- 12:17Speaker 1: she does as a rock vocalist. Um, but I didn't
- 12:22Speaker 1: thoroughly consume all of Miley's discography like I I mean, unfortunately,
- 12:29Speaker 1: it's the Malibu album. No, it's the Malibu album. I'm
- 12:33Speaker 1: I'm I'm a I'm a sucker. I met arguably her
- 12:37Speaker 1: worst album. See. But here's the thing, though, is and
- 12:40Speaker 1: I don't I don't necessarily I would never claim that
- 12:42Speaker 1: this is like Miley's best era or Miley's best genre,
- 12:46Speaker 1: but as an artist of many genres who is typically
- 12:50Speaker 1: thought of as a pop artist, first, I do love
- 12:54Speaker 1: when she goes super hard on rock and country, and like,
- 12:58Speaker 1: I guess that's why I loved Younger. Yeah, I mean
- 13:01Speaker 1: that definitely. I think was her going back to her
- 13:04Speaker 1: country roots after being scorned from society and then Plastic Hearts,
- 13:10Speaker 1: the album that she released in I think like she
- 13:13Speaker 1: finally figured out who she is as an artist, like,
- 13:18Speaker 1: and that is rock and roll. I completely and totally agree.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Like I'm kind of I mean, I want Miley to
- 13:24Speaker 1: be whatever she wants to be, but I'm like praying
- 13:27Speaker 1: that she stays like in this kind of like rock
- 13:32Speaker 1: pop hybrid because does she does she revisit any of
- 13:36Speaker 1: her like does she on the live album? Does she
- 13:40Speaker 1: revisit like bangers stuff through that lens? Yes? She does,
- 13:44Speaker 1: And that's kind of like what made the the live
- 13:47Speaker 1: album as a whole so satisfying to me. Apparently, she
- 13:51Speaker 1: constructed the track list of this concert with her fans,
- 13:55Speaker 1: so the track list comprised of like all of her
- 13:58Speaker 1: most requested or most beloved covers or songs, and so
- 14:02Speaker 1: you know, you get bangers and um Wrecking Ball Party
- 14:06Speaker 1: in the USA, but you also get Edge of seventeen
- 14:11Speaker 1: Janice Joplin's Maybe, which is my favorite track on the
- 14:14Speaker 1: live out. Did she do the Climb? She did do
- 14:16Speaker 1: the Climb? Oh my god. The Climb is the song
- 14:19Speaker 1: that if it comes on while I'm driving, it's like
- 14:24Speaker 1: the volume goes up, the windows go up, and I
- 14:27Speaker 1: do a full Grammy nominated performance. I love the Climb
- 14:33Speaker 1: so much. Did she do See You Again? She did? So.
- 14:36Speaker 1: She did really good um, for lack of a better term,
- 14:39Speaker 1: mash ups or rather like two like this half and
- 14:41Speaker 1: half songs where the song was one half bang bang
- 14:45Speaker 1: allah and and it started out as like bang bang
- 14:50Speaker 1: I Shot You Down, and then it went into see
- 14:52Speaker 1: You Again, which was like so well done. And she
- 14:55Speaker 1: also did a kind of mashup of Wrecking Ball and
- 14:58Speaker 1: Shanat O'Connor's nothing Come Hairs to You. Seven Things, Yes, God,
- 15:03Speaker 1: Oh my god. I love Seven Things, Joline. I mean
- 15:07Speaker 1: that Jolene covered that she did I think it was
- 15:09Speaker 1: itself by Southwest. Like that to me is like what
- 15:12Speaker 1: I remember as the moment that like truly decontextualized Miley
- 15:17Speaker 1: from being Hannah Montana. I think more more even than
- 15:22Speaker 1: like the like tongue out like the like I truly think,
- 15:27Speaker 1: at least maybe not in more mainstream pop culture, but
- 15:30Speaker 1: I think for people who pay attention to the Internet,
- 15:34Speaker 1: that's the moment when we were like, oh, right, like
- 15:37Speaker 1: she's actually talented, Yeah exactly, and like, you know, Miley
- 15:40Speaker 1: is always going to be the tongue out like artists
- 15:44Speaker 1: that does things like solely for shock value. But I
- 15:47Speaker 1: think her love of like artistic shock value is because
- 15:52Speaker 1: she's such a student of pop and of old school
- 15:56Speaker 1: rock artists that thrived on shock value in like a
- 15:59Speaker 1: pre ancelo culture era did Like a Prayer. Her cover
- 16:05Speaker 1: of Like a Prayer literally brought a tear to my eye.
- 16:10Speaker 1: I am not joking. I was in my car smoking
- 16:14Speaker 1: and bibing out and like tearing up because it's so
- 16:17Speaker 1: soulful and well done in terms of like the truck
- 16:20Speaker 1: lists as a whole. Like Unfortunately, though I liked a
- 16:23Speaker 1: lot of it, her rendition of Bangers is maybe the
- 16:26Speaker 1: least interesting kind of reinterpretation of her songs. It's like
- 16:32Speaker 1: a little messy and all over the place, but her,
- 16:34Speaker 1: but four by four, which starts out with this like
- 16:37Speaker 1: really hard and fast country drumline, is so like I
- 16:42Speaker 1: was just in it. That was the moment where I
- 16:44Speaker 1: was like, I am in this live album and like
- 16:48Speaker 1: as a whole belonged to me, belonged to like a
- 16:53Speaker 1: cannon of live albums that you know, we went on
- 16:56Speaker 1: to love, like Joni Mitchell's like Mile of Aisles, or
- 17:00Speaker 1: Um the Rolling Stones live album, Madonna's Confessions Tour live
- 17:04Speaker 1: album exactly, which is, like, you know, one of miley
- 17:07Speaker 1: stavorite artists. I I definitely need to listen to it,
- 17:10Speaker 1: like right after this. I honestly, Miley is kind of
- 17:13Speaker 1: one of my favorite girls. I have consistently really liked
- 17:18Speaker 1: every era of her music. I think that, like, even
- 17:22Speaker 1: though I'm not necessarily as familiar as you are with
- 17:25Speaker 1: with Miley's, this kind of compilation really solidified for me
- 17:32Speaker 1: the same thing that she is like definitely one of
- 17:34Speaker 1: my girls. Like I understood like the ethos behind her
- 17:38Speaker 1: music so much more by way of the rock that
- 17:42Speaker 1: she loves. And I felt like in this album specifically
- 17:47Speaker 1: that her vocals and the way she did every song,
- 17:50Speaker 1: which every single song has produced like a classic rock song.
- 17:54Speaker 1: I did feel all of the ways that she is
- 17:59Speaker 1: in the legacy of you know, rock artists like Jane
- 18:02Speaker 1: Jet or whatever the rolling. It's also amazing that she's
- 18:05Speaker 1: been so prolific that at such a young age. I mean,
- 18:09Speaker 1: obviously she started out very young, but that at such
- 18:11Speaker 1: a young age now she can look back at her
- 18:14Speaker 1: discography and do something like this. And you know, we
- 18:18Speaker 1: see people I think revisit their old work a lot,
- 18:20Speaker 1: but I think figuring out the right lens for it
- 18:24Speaker 1: once you've, as Miley has done, found the thing that
- 18:28Speaker 1: feels the most like real to who she is. It's
- 18:31Speaker 1: cool to then see her go look back at her
- 18:34Speaker 1: you know, very long career and reinterpret it with this
- 18:40Speaker 1: new understanding of who she is as an artist and
- 18:43Speaker 1: exactly and she says something to that effect on the
- 18:46Speaker 1: live album They have like her concert banter in the
- 18:49Speaker 1: album as well, and like she talks about how she's
- 18:52Speaker 1: had to try on so many different identities and obviously
- 18:55Speaker 1: Miley has made her fair share of mistakes and like
- 18:58Speaker 1: the cultural appropriation of it all all and others, but
- 19:01Speaker 1: every woman in music has to reinvent themselves like every
- 19:05Speaker 1: other year, Like it's just it's a product of the
- 19:07Speaker 1: oppression and a product of you know, usually women having
- 19:11Speaker 1: to come up when they're extremely young and still figuring
- 19:13Speaker 1: out who they are. So I'm happy to see where
- 19:15Speaker 1: Miley has arrived, and I don't know, that just made
- 19:18Speaker 1: me love her a whole lot. Same so I saw
- 19:20Speaker 1: on TikTok someone who I follow, Sativa Diva, who is
- 19:25Speaker 1: really funny. You should check them out, talking about art
- 19:28Speaker 1: Flag Means Death, which is a new comedy pirate show
- 19:33Speaker 1: on Atrio Max. I would say that it's like falling
- 19:37Speaker 1: into place with a lot of these other historical retellings
- 19:42Speaker 1: that have like contemporary humor and dialogue. What I had
- 19:46Speaker 1: heard was that it was very gay, and so I
- 19:49Speaker 1: was like, Okay, I can either do my quarterly rewatch
- 19:52Speaker 1: the Pirates of the Caribbean, or I could, you know,
- 19:55Speaker 1: try out like half hour series about gay pirates. I
- 20:01Speaker 1: watched the first episode. I thought it was fine. I
- 20:04Speaker 1: just wasn't that interested. Maybe we'll we'll give it like
- 20:09Speaker 1: another episode or two to get me interested. I don't know.
- 20:14Speaker 1: I watched the first fifteen minutes or so before my
- 20:17Speaker 1: takeout arrived, but I I appreciated the humor. It felt
- 20:22Speaker 1: very smart to me. It reminded me of like the
- 20:25Speaker 1: British Office or like a kind of I don't know,
- 20:29Speaker 1: like almost like a mumble core comedy. It's a little
- 20:33Speaker 1: Flight of the Conchords, know, yeah, but that the humor
- 20:37Speaker 1: is clearly very smart, and I liked that that humor
- 20:40Speaker 1: is in place in a period drama about pirates. But yeah,
- 20:44Speaker 1: it didn't immediately grab me. Maybe because there are no stars,
- 20:50Speaker 1: well no women and no women, Oh my god, I
- 20:53Speaker 1: didn't even notice. But that says a lot about me,
- 20:55Speaker 1: No doesn't it does because you don't see women. I don't,
- 20:58Speaker 1: well women shouldn't you us right now are looking at
- 21:01Speaker 1: a floating pair of headphones. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, And
- 21:04Speaker 1: Mike that's it. But yeah, I mean, we should watch
- 21:06Speaker 1: the second episode together. I think it's it's not an
- 21:21Speaker 1: understatement to say that Charlie the first Charlie's Angels, which
- 21:26Speaker 1: the year two thousand, which is really started the new
- 21:31Speaker 1: Millennia literally, and he was a bomb shell of early
- 21:34Speaker 1: odds culture in a crazy way, an explosion, especially especially
- 21:39Speaker 1: since which I didn't realize this until after. So I
- 21:41Speaker 1: watched both films in quarantine for the first time. Basically
- 21:45Speaker 1: I have loose memories of seeing it in the background.
- 21:48Speaker 1: My mom and sister watched it and really loved it. Um.
- 21:51Speaker 1: But they went and saw it without me, I think
- 21:53Speaker 1: in theaters the first time because you weren't allowed because
- 21:56Speaker 1: I was like not or they were just like you know,
- 21:58Speaker 1: girl time and I was like sand on girls. Um.
- 22:02Speaker 1: But like it literally was a a landmark moment in
- 22:07Speaker 1: early odds culture and encapsulates so many things that were
- 22:10Speaker 1: like important to the early Odds, like with the Well.
- 22:14Speaker 1: First of all, it was directed by mcge which I
- 22:16Speaker 1: didn't realize who was the director of like smash Mouth
- 22:20Speaker 1: music videos and corn famous music video director, which is
- 22:25Speaker 1: like also you know, very early odds culture. But I
- 22:28Speaker 1: think without Charlie's angels, Like without Charlie's angels, we don't
- 22:33Speaker 1: get things like we don't get juicy guitar. No, we
- 22:36Speaker 1: don't get the simple life. Honestly, all three of these
- 22:39Speaker 1: women they were already stars, but they ascended in this movie.
- 22:44Speaker 1: This is what turned them into They were actresses. This
- 22:49Speaker 1: made them stars. This made them stars. It made them
- 22:52Speaker 1: household names. I mean, they were already stars, but it
- 22:54Speaker 1: was like almost like ascension into like a list. They
- 22:57Speaker 1: were like they were like the actress version of the
- 23:00Speaker 1: Spice Girls. Yeah. And also like, I mean the Destiny's
- 23:04Speaker 1: Child in this movie Independent Woman Part one Wow, And
- 23:09Speaker 1: that the music video isn't the Destiny's Child music video
- 23:11Speaker 1: Charlie's Angels themed, or like, well, I mean the music
- 23:14Speaker 1: the song was written for the movie. But this was
- 23:17Speaker 1: back in the day when I like that, like the
- 23:21Speaker 1: song that was packaged with the movie was important in
- 23:25Speaker 1: a way that wasn't just like Oscar Baby, Um, and
- 23:29Speaker 1: I will okay, I guess to back up, like um,
- 23:32Speaker 1: for the Virgin, we're getting ahead of our We're getting
- 23:34Speaker 1: ahead of ourselves, are get ahead ourselves? Are just so excited,
- 23:36Speaker 1: so excited for the Virgins. You know, the plot of
- 23:39Speaker 1: these movies are actually not that important. Well, I guess
- 23:42Speaker 1: maybe let's let's even before that set the cultural context
- 23:45Speaker 1: of Charlie. The Charlie's Angels film franchise, which started in
- 23:49Speaker 1: the year two thousand, was a movie reboot of the
- 23:52Speaker 1: classics seventies TV show Charlie's Angels about a trio of
- 23:57Speaker 1: superspy women. Super spy women. They're basically like a trio
- 24:01Speaker 1: of privately owned like Lady Cops. Let's not say that
- 24:04Speaker 1: they're owned. They are literally owned by Charlie. Hen work
- 24:08Speaker 1: for him. No, they literally are owned by him. This
- 24:11Speaker 1: movie is I mean, we'll get into it. We'll get
- 24:13Speaker 1: into it. Actually. So it's about a trio of women
- 24:16Speaker 1: who work for a man named Charlie who they do
- 24:19Speaker 1: not know. He only communicates with them through a voice
- 24:22Speaker 1: box and his proxy Bosley, and they solve crimes through
- 24:28Speaker 1: use of like gadgetry and disguises, lots of sony and
- 24:35Speaker 1: the hallmark of the original series, which I've actually never seen,
- 24:39Speaker 1: was they used guns, but in the rebooted movies they
- 24:43Speaker 1: only use their fists and their wits. It's full handhand come,
- 24:48Speaker 1: lots of kicking and the court. The fight corio is
- 24:51Speaker 1: amazing in this movie, like and also a lot. They
- 24:54Speaker 1: all did a lot of their own stunts like they
- 24:56Speaker 1: were they were on wires down. It was this was
- 25:00Speaker 1: like Matrix. I think this is because Matrix right after,
- 25:06Speaker 1: So this is definitely a post Matrix movie. Um, it
- 25:09Speaker 1: was spoofing Matrix in this in both movies, I don't
- 25:12Speaker 1: think it was. It was like in conversation, it references
- 25:17Speaker 1: moments from the Matrix, But I don't think it's spoofing it.
- 25:20Speaker 1: There are moments that lift tropes from the Matrix and
- 25:24Speaker 1: put them into the Charlie's Angels movies in a in
- 25:26Speaker 1: a very knowing way. It's supposed to be like that,
- 25:30Speaker 1: I think. I think it's like more that it is
- 25:33Speaker 1: happening in the same time of film history, and it's
- 25:37Speaker 1: like lifting literally like the way they were doing special
- 25:42Speaker 1: effects at the time, Like the Matrix was the peak
- 25:46Speaker 1: of what we had in terms of like c G I,
- 25:48Speaker 1: and this is maybe like a filtered down version and
- 25:52Speaker 1: following the Matrix, everyone wanted to be like the Matrix.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Like everyone wanted action scenes like the Matrix. Everyone wanted
- 25:58Speaker 1: to like be that. So yeah, that makes sense. So
- 26:01Speaker 1: let's give like a basic plot overview. Although I think
- 26:04Speaker 1: these movies are more about vibes than plot. These movies
- 26:07Speaker 1: are really disinterested in plot, and also like just rules
- 26:11Speaker 1: of conflict are like totally thrown out the window, Like
- 26:13Speaker 1: they abandoned plots fully. It's like about jokes, which I
- 26:17Speaker 1: really appreciate actually, um, but yeah, the first movie, Bosley
- 26:20Speaker 1: basically briefs the girls and he's like, there's this tech
- 26:23Speaker 1: bro and his technology was stolen. You have to like
- 26:26Speaker 1: rescue him and then figure out where his technology was stolen.
- 26:30Speaker 1: And they guess at the very beginning that it's this
- 26:32Speaker 1: like evil girl who's like his accomplice or whatever, and
- 26:36Speaker 1: they guessed right, and she ends up kind of being
- 26:39Speaker 1: the bad girl along with she's kind of like she's
- 26:42Speaker 1: like a side character. I would not say she's the villain.
- 26:45Speaker 1: She is. She her and her and there are in
- 26:48Speaker 1: a romantic relationship, but she's like she's an accomplice. She's not.
- 26:53Speaker 1: She's not the girl in the way that that you know,
- 26:56Speaker 1: Demi Moore is the girl in se That's true, that's sure. Yeah,
- 27:00Speaker 1: she's a little secondary um, but yeah. And then and
- 27:03Speaker 1: then the plot that follows is really actually like completely nonsensical.
- 27:07Speaker 1: They just basically like fight and seduce men over and
- 27:10Speaker 1: over again to kind of find these little clues along
- 27:14Speaker 1: the way before they, you know, it becomes known to
- 27:17Speaker 1: them that they're being set up and the whole the
- 27:20Speaker 1: whole mission was a set up to find Charlie and
- 27:24Speaker 1: kill him. Yes, and I would say it's not so
- 27:26Speaker 1: much a seduction as a titilation. Um. They definitely they
- 27:30Speaker 1: weaponize their sensuality more than their sexuality, you know, I
- 27:36Speaker 1: think let's let's start with that because I want I'm
- 27:40Speaker 1: not sure. I'm not sure about like I feel like
- 27:44Speaker 1: this movie. Um well, okay, I'll ask you first. What
- 27:48Speaker 1: is your relationship to Charlie's Angels aside from the dolls? Yeah,
- 27:53Speaker 1: well I loved I saw the movies when they came out,
- 27:55Speaker 1: loved them, was like consumed everything I could about them. Um,
- 28:00Speaker 1: you know they are I think of this era some
- 28:03Speaker 1: of my favorite movies. Yeah, and the movies that are
- 28:06Speaker 1: like horrendously problematic and yet you will rewatch them over
- 28:11Speaker 1: and over again, like they really are in my opinion
- 28:14Speaker 1: that good, having as someone who watched them recently, not
- 28:17Speaker 1: really like at the time they came out. They're very
- 28:20Speaker 1: of their time, yes, yeah yeah, um, But like on
- 28:24Speaker 1: the sensuality of it all, it's really interesting because the
- 28:26Speaker 1: original seventies show was like, you know, the the biggest
- 28:33Speaker 1: the reason it was such a hit, or the first
- 28:35Speaker 1: season was a hit until fair Face that left it, Um,
- 28:38Speaker 1: was because it was just like women and like scantily
- 28:41Speaker 1: clad clothing, solving crimes and stuff like that, and like
- 28:45Speaker 1: their whole like it actually was a part of like
- 28:49Speaker 1: an era of what they called jiggle television, which is
- 28:52Speaker 1: like The Bay Watches and The Wonder Woman's of the World,
- 28:56Speaker 1: where like it was just like watching women in like
- 28:59Speaker 1: tight clothing, you know, jump around in like solve crimes
- 29:02Speaker 1: or whatever or like be kind of badasses and I
- 29:05Speaker 1: And so when they redid it in two thousand, they
- 29:09Speaker 1: kind of almost like they really borrowed from that that
- 29:13Speaker 1: kind of like that part of the appeal and then
- 29:16Speaker 1: made it kind of like self aware and funny and
- 29:20Speaker 1: and weird at times, Like it's a very like Zany movie,
- 29:25Speaker 1: you know what I mean, Like all three of them
- 29:26Speaker 1: are giving like cartoon totally. I think a lot of
- 29:31Speaker 1: reboots that we have today are really hard reboots where
- 29:34Speaker 1: they take the like essence of something but really place
- 29:37Speaker 1: it in the modern era. And I think what Charlie's
- 29:41Speaker 1: Angels did really well and that actually radiated out to
- 29:45Speaker 1: the culture was brought a very seventies sensibility along with
- 29:51Speaker 1: I guess like the framework of the story. And I
- 29:54Speaker 1: would say that Charlie's Angels kind of jump started like
- 29:58Speaker 1: a sort of seventies revive liable in pop culture that
- 30:03Speaker 1: we're now seeing again because of like the twenty or trendcycle.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Um like like this is kind of around the same
- 30:10Speaker 1: time as like Madonna's Um music albums Boston Powers era too. Yeah. Okay, yeah,
- 30:18Speaker 1: well that was like maybe that was more like late nineties,
- 30:22Speaker 1: but it's yeah, it's kind of all the same time,
- 30:24Speaker 1: and we're now also seeing that seventies revival happening now
- 30:28Speaker 1: in fashion and like kind of in music too. There's
- 30:31Speaker 1: something really interesting to me about like how the girls
- 30:34Speaker 1: like sexuality plays into the movie, and I think that
- 30:38Speaker 1: there is a big dissonance between what the writer's intents
- 30:44Speaker 1: were and how we actually consume it, you know, especially
- 30:48Speaker 1: in because this movie was written by three white guys,
- 30:52Speaker 1: and a lot of the things that happened to the
- 30:55Speaker 1: girls are products of like a male imagination, like like
- 31:00Speaker 1: shaking your ass for no one and being like a
- 31:03Speaker 1: bimbo to like the mail guy being like, oh yeah,
- 31:05Speaker 1: you can put the package in my slot, you know,
- 31:07Speaker 1: or like I mean, they're constantly naked for no reason.
- 31:11Speaker 1: There's like tons of like camera angles on their body
- 31:14Speaker 1: for no reason, and like and then a majority of
- 31:19Speaker 1: the steps that they take in the first movie to
- 31:22Speaker 1: solve the plot involve them seducing men or tricking them
- 31:28Speaker 1: into you know, like using their basically how hot they are.
- 31:31Speaker 1: What I mean when I say that, I think it's
- 31:33Speaker 1: more like like um sensuality than sexuality, And I don't
- 31:37Speaker 1: really see it a seduction. Is that Like, yes, I
- 31:40Speaker 1: agree that this movie very much like is the male
- 31:44Speaker 1: gaze is all over it, but it's like it's more
- 31:47Speaker 1: like bending over a car to show your tips than
- 31:51Speaker 1: like giving someone a lap dance. Like there there it
- 31:55Speaker 1: is like a very wink wink. It's horny, but I
- 32:00Speaker 1: don't think it fucks yeah, it's it's horny too comical degree,
- 32:04Speaker 1: like they these women are comedically hot, like the number
- 32:07Speaker 1: of times they like take off their helmet to like
- 32:09Speaker 1: swish their hair or whatever, like it's hilarious. And I think, actually,
- 32:14Speaker 1: like part of it is that these women are such
- 32:17Speaker 1: stars that like their charisma, unique servan talent kind of
- 32:23Speaker 1: overpowers the male gaze of the directors and the writers
- 32:27Speaker 1: a little bit. And what it is is they were
- 32:30Speaker 1: in on the joke. They were in on the joke
- 32:32Speaker 1: that like a lot of women in a way that
- 32:35Speaker 1: a lot of women in film don't always get to
- 32:37Speaker 1: be when the film is about the male gaze. Yeah,
- 32:41Speaker 1: and I think that they took what we're extremely underwritten characters, right,
- 32:46Speaker 1: Like the movie has like no brain And I don't
- 32:48Speaker 1: say that in a pejorative way, like I like no
- 32:51Speaker 1: brain culture. I love idiot culture, like I like consuming
- 32:54Speaker 1: movies that are that easy. But like I totally agree that,
- 32:58Speaker 1: like these women are so have nothing going on in
- 33:03Speaker 1: their inner lives and and then they all have like
- 33:05Speaker 1: you know, little dating montages where they have like boy problems.
- 33:08Speaker 1: I have nothing to do with the plot, but the
- 33:10Speaker 1: three stars in this movie fill in so many blanks
- 33:14Speaker 1: with their performances and with the like very like singular
- 33:19Speaker 1: and like totally off the cuff wacky things that they
- 33:21Speaker 1: do in terms of like acting choices that are just
- 33:24Speaker 1: like endlessly fun to watch, especially Drew. I mean, Cameron
- 33:29Speaker 1: is also just like such a cartoon but like Drew
- 33:31Speaker 1: to me is like the Cameron is. It's really funny
- 33:36Speaker 1: now looking back on it and the like who these
- 33:38Speaker 1: women are in pop culture now because Cameron is very
- 33:42Speaker 1: obviously the star of these movies, like she has the
- 33:46Speaker 1: center position. But I think because of these movies, like
- 33:50Speaker 1: these women all got on the like the same level
- 33:54Speaker 1: of fame after these movies, and it's just interesting to
- 33:58Speaker 1: see where their careers have gone now where, Like Cameron
- 34:01Speaker 1: ds doesn't act anymore. She has like a wine company.
- 34:05Speaker 1: M Drew is a talk show host. And Lucy does
- 34:09Speaker 1: TV TV and lesbian art. What does she do on TV?
- 34:13Speaker 1: She's on was on I don't know if it's still
- 34:16Speaker 1: on the air. She was on the Sherlock Holmes TV
- 34:19Speaker 1: show Elementary. Yes, but if you also just google Watson,
- 34:22Speaker 1: if you google like Lucy lou like painting or whatever
- 34:25Speaker 1: she has, Like so she's several pieces of extremely sapphic
- 34:29Speaker 1: art and I love What I love about um these
- 34:32Speaker 1: movies is like these girls are best friends because of
- 34:35Speaker 1: them in a real way. And like when Drew launched
- 34:39Speaker 1: her TV show, they all reunited for an interview where
- 34:43Speaker 1: Cameron was like, c G, I'd in wait was she
- 34:47Speaker 1: really was this pandemic times or something? Or oh that sucks?
- 34:51Speaker 1: I forgot about that. Yeah, I just I feel like,
- 34:54Speaker 1: I mean, I don't want to get into the reboot yet,
- 34:56Speaker 1: Like I mean the reboot reboot the Kristin Stewart one,
- 34:58Speaker 1: but like I think it's a lot of what that
- 35:00Speaker 1: one lacked is that these three women were arrived like stars,
- 35:05Speaker 1: and then what they did with like a kind of
- 35:09Speaker 1: you know, very male. Script was like so sublime and
- 35:14Speaker 1: like completely I don't know, transformative, Like if we had
- 35:17Speaker 1: gotten different actresses, like if it had been Thanny Newton
- 35:20Speaker 1: instead of Lucy lu which is like I just like
- 35:22Speaker 1: it would have been different, you know what I mean.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Cameron Diaz, I mean like she played kind of a
- 35:27Speaker 1: very similar character. And the sweetest thing like this was
- 35:30Speaker 1: these were roles that were interesting to her that she
- 35:33Speaker 1: wanted to do something with and like Lucy Lou and
- 35:36Speaker 1: like something like um, kill Bill or whatever, Like she's
- 35:40Speaker 1: sucking smart and she knows like what she can do
- 35:43Speaker 1: with like a complex like role about a woman that
- 35:47Speaker 1: like you know, is like a badass or whatever. I
- 35:49Speaker 1: also said about something recently that um something was like
- 35:53Speaker 1: post Spice Girls, girl power, and like this movie is
- 35:58Speaker 1: very that And that's why they're in on the joke,
- 36:01Speaker 1: because this was a time in pop culture where there
- 36:04Speaker 1: was like a mainstream movement of female empowerment that was
- 36:09Speaker 1: like a little shallow um but still existed, and this
- 36:14Speaker 1: movie definitely feels like a byproduct of that. Even though
- 36:29Speaker 1: this was like one of the most successful movies of
- 36:32Speaker 1: the year. Two Bounds and like the movie was critically
- 36:35Speaker 1: like made fun of, like immensely, like people like I
- 36:39Speaker 1: knew it was very dumb, and I think that like
- 36:41Speaker 1: people liked to exactly what you said. I think people
- 36:44Speaker 1: caught onto that component of it, but we didn't care.
- 36:47Speaker 1: And I think that rewatching it now in there are
- 36:51Speaker 1: there are a lot of tropes in it that are
- 36:53Speaker 1: actually more resonant to the way we talk about and
- 36:57Speaker 1: enjoy things now. The things that we find funny are
- 37:00Speaker 1: somewhat even funnier now in terms of like I think
- 37:03Speaker 1: I'm thinking specifically of the bimbo ifacation of like are
- 37:08Speaker 1: you know internet talk right now and how we're identifying
- 37:12Speaker 1: as bimbos on TikTok and on Instagram or whatever. We're
- 37:15Speaker 1: reclaiming this like kind of sexuality because it's like bimbo
- 37:19Speaker 1: for it's like bimbos for the consumption of bimbos, not
- 37:23Speaker 1: for the consumption of men. And so it almost is
- 37:26Speaker 1: like when you're watching this movie, they're not giving to
- 37:30Speaker 1: the performance to the men, you know what I mean,
- 37:32Speaker 1: Like that's kind of what it feels like. It's like
- 37:34Speaker 1: there's a zane nous too, especially someone like Drew Barrymore
- 37:38Speaker 1: in the movie where that doesn't feel sexy, it feels
- 37:42Speaker 1: knowingly comedic and like totally in her own kind of
- 37:46Speaker 1: like power. And I think it's also just like another
- 37:50Speaker 1: layer that they're exploiting the idiocy and horny nous of
- 37:54Speaker 1: men for their benefit, you know, like theyre they know
- 37:57Speaker 1: how to kind of like usurp the situation. It's it's
- 38:00Speaker 1: kind of like the perfect storm. Like I think the
- 38:03Speaker 1: planet's really aligned on this one, and if maybe one
- 38:07Speaker 1: thing had been off, it just would not have worked.
- 38:10Speaker 1: As like you kind of seeing the sequel, which, like
- 38:15Speaker 1: I love Charlie's Angels full throttle, it's definitely not as
- 38:19Speaker 1: good of a movie and it's like much more of
- 38:21Speaker 1: a so bad it's good kind of movie. Um. In
- 38:26Speaker 1: the sequel, you have Demi Moore as um, a fallen angel,
- 38:30Speaker 1: you know, she's like a former angel who turns out
- 38:32Speaker 1: to be the villain. And the I think it's just
- 38:38Speaker 1: um two it's like to self aware or no. I
- 38:45Speaker 1: think maybe like the first one is more self aware
- 38:48Speaker 1: and the second one is like buying into its own
- 38:50Speaker 1: bullshit a little bit. I think for me, it's like
- 38:53Speaker 1: there's an off the rails nous in the first movie
- 38:56Speaker 1: that was so rewarded that they kind of take it
- 39:00Speaker 1: too far. In the second movie, they really discard the
- 39:04Speaker 1: audiences intelligence, you know what I mean. It's like the
- 39:08Speaker 1: plot really doesn't matter. In the second one. You know
- 39:11Speaker 1: some I mean great visual moments like Demi Moore with
- 39:14Speaker 1: the surfboard is so hot. I've some great lines for
- 39:18Speaker 1: saying I was never good. I was great. Yeah, there
- 39:22Speaker 1: are a lot of good lines in both of the movies.
- 39:23Speaker 1: I remember one of I can't remember the name of
- 39:25Speaker 1: the villain lady in the first movie, but she says like,
- 39:27Speaker 1: don't send a man to do a woman's job. Like
- 39:30Speaker 1: they're just lots very like the the whole thing of
- 39:33Speaker 1: the movie. Yeah, I loved In the first movie, there's
- 39:37Speaker 1: this moment where Lucy is like, for some reason unknown
- 39:41Speaker 1: to me, there's a company that hires her as a
- 39:43Speaker 1: like an efficiency expert. When she walks into Baraco. Oh
- 39:48Speaker 1: my god, that is like one of the hottest things
- 39:50Speaker 1: that I've ever been captured on films. With the riding
- 39:53Speaker 1: crop and with Cameron Diaz Andrew Barrymore behind her in
- 39:56Speaker 1: Drag also early Melissa McCarthy McCarthy is is and not um.
- 40:02Speaker 1: She has like three lines. There's like a lot of
- 40:04Speaker 1: weird like um, you know, kind of pre famous people
- 40:07Speaker 1: like Shyla Buff's in the second one. Oh yeah, Crispin Glovers,
- 40:12Speaker 1: the weird the um Tim Curry was famous at the time,
- 40:18Speaker 1: but like he was in this, he was in the
- 40:20Speaker 1: first one also put post or like I guess this
- 40:23Speaker 1: was maybe during friends. Matt le Blanc, Ye, Matt la Honestly, Okay,
- 40:27Speaker 1: here's the thing. Actually, there are a lot of I
- 40:30Speaker 1: feel like Cameron Diaz, Matt le Blanc and Tim Curry
- 40:34Speaker 1: are like a great treat of like idiot culture movies.
- 40:37Speaker 1: Like they kind of only do very movies that you
- 40:41Speaker 1: have to like concede your own like cognitive thinking skills
- 40:46Speaker 1: in order to enjoy. I don't I don't know if
- 40:49Speaker 1: I I don't think I want you speaking on camera
- 40:51Speaker 1: dias like that name a movie that wasn't um being
- 40:56Speaker 1: John Malkovich that camera did that was like a prestige
- 40:59Speaker 1: performance or in her shoes. Yeah, I mean that is
- 41:03Speaker 1: a stunning the holiday shut the funk up, that is
- 41:08Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not again I have to say when
- 41:10Speaker 1: I say things are idiotic, that is a high compliment.
- 41:14Speaker 1: In my book, it feels judgment adult to me. No, no, no,
- 41:17Speaker 1: I am an idiot. Rose, you know this, I know this.
- 41:21Speaker 1: I don't know. I really pride myself on being a
- 41:25Speaker 1: very smart idiot. I I like things that combine idiot
- 41:29Speaker 1: culture and like things that you know, you can intellectualize.
- 41:32Speaker 1: I mean, I do think we can take a moment
- 41:34Speaker 1: to talk about the careers that these women have had.
- 41:37Speaker 1: Cameron Diaz, you know, was a movie star, Like she
- 41:43Speaker 1: was one of the A list girls, you know, Drew
- 41:46Speaker 1: she had already started her like ascent back into superstardom
- 41:51Speaker 1: after her like you know, troubled teenage years. And I
- 41:55Speaker 1: think actually Flower Films, her production company produced Charlie Angels. Yeah,
- 42:01Speaker 1: she's probably like one of the engines that like this.
- 42:05Speaker 1: She was asked after Elizabeth Banks decided she was going
- 42:08Speaker 1: to do it, she was asked to be an executive
- 42:10Speaker 1: producer that makes sense us. And then Lucy she was
- 42:16Speaker 1: a TV girl because she was on Ally McBeal, and
- 42:19Speaker 1: then I think this was her big film breakthrough Allie mcbell.
- 42:23Speaker 1: I've actually never seen Ally mcgeil. I used to watch
- 42:26Speaker 1: it when my parents watched it. I mean it's like,
- 42:29Speaker 1: you know, a weird law procedural. It was workplace where
- 42:34Speaker 1: I thought it had like their disguises, they're no, no, no, yeah,
- 42:39Speaker 1: it's about it's about a law firm and like everyone
- 42:43Speaker 1: sleeping together. We thought it was about spies. Allie mcbell
- 42:50Speaker 1: who plays Ali again Callista Flockhart. That is not a
- 42:54Speaker 1: name name. Say it again, Callista Flockhart. She's married to
- 42:58Speaker 1: Harrison Force. It sounds like like you sneezed or something.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Lista Flockhart and Jane kirk House also, um okay, since
- 43:10Speaker 1: this is yesterday's pop culture with today's takes, we have
- 43:13Speaker 1: to like briefly acknowledge that, like this movie is like
- 43:18Speaker 1: egregiously racist, like these women. So first of all, I
- 43:23Speaker 1: mean I could do the laundry list. But like the opening,
- 43:26Speaker 1: the opening scene is has like a great LLL cool
- 43:30Speaker 1: J cameo where he like jumps Sado plane and like
- 43:32Speaker 1: saves people from this bomb and then they land in
- 43:34Speaker 1: the in this boat off of the plane and L
- 43:38Speaker 1: cool J route takes off his mask to reveal himself
- 43:42Speaker 1: to this movie was huge for boats, huge for boats,
- 43:46Speaker 1: huge form white women pretending to be ethnicities that that
- 43:50Speaker 1: end races that they're not huge for boats because then
- 43:52Speaker 1: Tom Green also later has a boat. Oh really and
- 43:56Speaker 1: Tom Green? This was when Tom Green and Drew Barrymore
- 43:59Speaker 1: were married. Oh Chad, right, Okay, yeah, okay, so that's
- 44:05Speaker 1: like anyways, this L cool J moment is like the
- 44:09Speaker 1: casting the first time, And again I have to say
- 44:11Speaker 1: I'm like, I think I want to acknowledge these things,
- 44:15Speaker 1: not because I'm like canceled. You're not allowed to enjoy
- 44:18Speaker 1: this movie. As we always say, it's just like important
- 44:20Speaker 1: that the context sticks to it when we like talk
- 44:23Speaker 1: about it. But like, I mean, they is there's a
- 44:27Speaker 1: moment where they all dress up in kimonos and I
- 44:30Speaker 1: think I'm turning Japanese plays on the soundtrack. There is
- 44:34Speaker 1: a moment where Drew Barrymore is a literal brown face
- 44:38Speaker 1: when they're all belly dancers, which also doesn't make why
- 44:41Speaker 1: are the other two girls not in brown face? Like
- 44:44Speaker 1: why was Drew was like like, I'm the one that's
- 44:49Speaker 1: gonna do this. I was so confused by that. Um
- 44:54Speaker 1: there is just like there's a moment where Cameron Diaz
- 44:58Speaker 1: gets on soul train and she starts dancing to anaconda
- 45:02Speaker 1: and all the black people in the room were like,
- 45:04Speaker 1: what's going on? And then they all sharing for no reason,
- 45:08Speaker 1: which like I will never be mad about Cameron Diaz,
- 45:12Speaker 1: like you know, dance sequence, but like why did the
- 45:15Speaker 1: writers go out of their way to do this so
- 45:19Speaker 1: many times? Also, is her love interest Luke Wilson or
- 45:22Speaker 1: Owen Wilson. I can never I can never figure out
- 45:25Speaker 1: which one is. It's Luke and he's stunning. I think
- 45:28Speaker 1: I like Owen more because of his big nose. Yeah,
- 45:32Speaker 1: I mean yeah, as we've said before, Alan Wilson does
- 45:35Speaker 1: have the quintessential shovel face. Anyways, a lot of things
- 45:39Speaker 1: like that in the movie. Um, even honestly, well, I
- 45:42Speaker 1: was going to say the Dominatrix thing is like a
- 45:44Speaker 1: little fetishistic, but like, for the most part, it's just
- 45:47Speaker 1: like the movie. No, it's just hot. It's just hot.
- 45:49Speaker 1: It is so hot. Come on, yeah, yeah, you're like,
- 45:51Speaker 1: don't ruin everything. What I'm mostly trying to say is
- 45:54Speaker 1: the movie was very evidently written by three white guys,
- 45:57Speaker 1: three straight white guys. Actually, I think John August is gay, um,
- 46:01Speaker 1: but he's like a dungeon and Dragon's gay, So I
- 46:03Speaker 1: think that kind of says a lot. The fight scenes
- 46:23Speaker 1: are very iconic, and they performed them all in like
- 46:26Speaker 1: stiletto heels, so funny, so like another way that like
- 46:31Speaker 1: that is something that really hits in twenty one. The
- 46:34Speaker 1: disguises that they wear are incredible and like iconic. They
- 46:39Speaker 1: are Look, they are just so hot. They are so hot.
- 46:44Speaker 1: The scene where they're at the race track, Oh my god, incredible,
- 46:48Speaker 1: I mean each And in the second movie when they're
- 46:51Speaker 1: in the like leader hosen dresses. Wow, yet another culture
- 46:57Speaker 1: that they rading yodelers. Wait, no, that's in the first movie. Yeah,
- 47:03Speaker 1: the first in the first way because Bill Murray, I
- 47:06Speaker 1: guess Bill Murray didn't return. That was them seducing another
- 47:09Speaker 1: random guy by being like sexy leader house and girls
- 47:12Speaker 1: that like spank each other and stuff. Again, like I
- 47:15Speaker 1: just I loved it, but because of the bimbo thing.
- 47:18Speaker 1: It's so good. But you know what, you know what
- 47:20Speaker 1: I didn't love because it does not lean into the
- 47:23Speaker 1: bim bonus of it all was the two thousand nineteen
- 47:28Speaker 1: remake starring Kristen Stewart. And listen on this on this podcast,
- 47:37Speaker 1: This is a Christian Stewart stand podcast. We are Chrisbians,
- 47:41Speaker 1: Um we lift Christin Stewart up in celebration even though
- 47:45Speaker 1: you know we're down bad because she lost the Oscar.
- 47:49Speaker 1: But the Charlie's Angels reboot that she started was a
- 47:53Speaker 1: huge mega flop in in in industry terms, what we
- 47:56Speaker 1: would call a huge mega flop dodo cock up cataclysmically
- 48:04Speaker 1: um financially a loss for everyone involved. It's like, honestly,
- 48:09Speaker 1: it's not even then, it's like offensively bad. It's just nothing.
- 48:15Speaker 1: It's boring, the worst thing it could be, worst thing, yes, yes,
- 48:21Speaker 1: so boring. So it's like it actually maybe like a
- 48:26Speaker 1: jump started girl Boss culture um like culture. It was
- 48:34Speaker 1: the inciting incident. It's it's really I can't remember a
- 48:39Speaker 1: single thing that happened in it, I when I tell you,
- 48:41Speaker 1: And actually the only thing I can remember is the
- 48:44Speaker 1: Verne Cox showing up at the end, which good for her.
- 48:47Speaker 1: I hope the check cleared, like the final like that.
- 48:50Speaker 1: I don't really, I don't even remember. At the end,
- 48:53Speaker 1: there's like a montage of all of the new angels
- 48:57Speaker 1: that are like in an operation, and Laverne is one
- 49:01Speaker 1: of them. I was very stoned when I watched the movie.
- 49:03Speaker 1: But I I absolutely and this is no exaggeration, retained
- 49:08Speaker 1: not one single moment, set piece, scene, plot point, character name, nothing.
- 49:13Speaker 1: I saw an advanced press screening of it, and I
- 49:19Speaker 1: was just flabbergasted how bad it was. And I think, here,
- 49:24Speaker 1: here's the thing, is that this is like a comment,
- 49:26Speaker 1: this is a recurring theme on like a Virgin is
- 49:28Speaker 1: like people set out to make reboots and they spend
- 49:31Speaker 1: a hundred percent of their energy worrying about how they're
- 49:35Speaker 1: going to fix the old thing instead of just making
- 49:38Speaker 1: a good movie. Yeah, and that's what I think is
- 49:41Speaker 1: great about the two tho movies. It's not trying to
- 49:45Speaker 1: fix there's no intention. I mean not to excuse all
- 49:48Speaker 1: the egregiously like racist things, but like it's like it
- 49:51Speaker 1: has no intention in doing no, it's just trying to
- 49:53Speaker 1: be fun. Yeah, and it was. It was not stuff
- 49:55Speaker 1: fun And like I think, you know, I personally think
- 49:59Speaker 1: that that this has to be this is a director problem.
- 50:02Speaker 1: Like I'm sorry Elizabeth Banks, like we're proud of you,
- 50:05Speaker 1: but like this is this is a director problem. And
- 50:09Speaker 1: as I kind of alluded to earlier, it's a casting problem.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Like I love case do, but this was not the
- 50:17Speaker 1: role for her. I think she was fine. I don't
- 50:20Speaker 1: know who, well, who were the other two specifically do
- 50:23Speaker 1: you remember that was fine? What? What do you what
- 50:26Speaker 1: did you retain that you thought so great? Where he
- 50:29Speaker 1: was fine? I was just happy to be looking at her.
- 50:32Speaker 1: But oh, that's an interesting answer. Do you remember you know,
- 50:35Speaker 1: an outfit, a line, a moment, a motivation. Do you
- 50:38Speaker 1: remember anything that Christian Stewart did in this I remember
- 50:41Speaker 1: there's a scene where she like flirts with some girl. Yeah,
- 50:45Speaker 1: I remember, I actually don't. I probably completely misremembering this,
- 50:49Speaker 1: but I remember her being kind of like a like
- 50:52Speaker 1: a womanizing lesbian, like she's like she's giving the England
- 51:00Speaker 1: in the Batman. But but literally, who were the other
- 51:06Speaker 1: two women in this movie? That's the thing that was
- 51:09Speaker 1: the problem is like they were there was no charisma,
- 51:12Speaker 1: unique as a rman talent. Yes, I want to know
- 51:14Speaker 1: who the other girls on deck were, because these girls
- 51:16Speaker 1: are I'm sorry, nobody's no one has ever heard of
- 51:20Speaker 1: these other two women. And then like, we commend you
- 51:24Speaker 1: for like inclusive casting, but we how can we commend
- 51:28Speaker 1: it if it didn't even if it if none of
- 51:32Speaker 1: that translate inclusively cast better actress. Yes, there's so many
- 51:36Speaker 1: other amazing women that could have been in this movie
- 51:40Speaker 1: that we're stars and I really do feel like because
- 51:43Speaker 1: the plot isn't that important, the movie necessitates stars and
- 51:48Speaker 1: so like Christian Stewart, in my opinion, is like the
- 51:51Speaker 1: right direction. Like she's someone who can be in action
- 51:54Speaker 1: and like she can play a badass. And I like
- 51:57Speaker 1: that they made the character like a lesbian or by two,
- 52:00Speaker 1: but like it was unspecified and specified, which is so annoying,
- 52:04Speaker 1: Like that's so toothless. Um but like she's not Christmas
- 52:08Speaker 1: Ward's not funny. She's not funny. She's not she's the
- 52:12Speaker 1: most she's an incredible actress, but she's not funny. Yes, yes, exactly,
- 52:18Speaker 1: and and and she does not and she does not
- 52:21Speaker 1: have the kind of presence that you know, Drew Cameron
- 52:26Speaker 1: and Lucy had. But I will say, if there's one
- 52:29Speaker 1: thing this movie did get right, is that they really
- 52:32Speaker 1: fed the rnators. Okay, oh my god, that song with
- 52:37Speaker 1: with um Ari Lana and Miley and Miley, Oh my god,
- 52:43Speaker 1: the only like semi good thing to come out of
- 52:46Speaker 1: this movie. And even still that song is like and
- 52:48Speaker 1: not great. Ari executive produced the soundtrack, which is why
- 52:51Speaker 1: she's on five of the songs, on on one of
- 52:55Speaker 1: the songs. Okay, yeah, but this, so it's kind of
- 53:00Speaker 1: a Dr Luke production as well. Yeah, but um, you
- 53:03Speaker 1: know the movie in that music video is just so stupid.
- 53:09Speaker 1: It's like one of these things is not like the other.
- 53:12Speaker 1: She's like it's like the music video takes a xan
- 53:16Speaker 1: X and she appears and I love Lana. I am
- 53:20Speaker 1: a Laana Neator. I thought a lot of was I
- 53:22Speaker 1: thought a lot of I thought Lana was kind of
- 53:24Speaker 1: good in that in the in the song too, from
- 53:26Speaker 1: what I remember, but I mean, honestly, it was it
- 53:28Speaker 1: was during a weird era for Lana. It was during
- 53:30Speaker 1: the honeymoon period, which I you know, should have been
- 53:33Speaker 1: one of the other girls, honestly. Okay, So when when
- 53:37Speaker 1: this movie is inevitably when Charlie's Angels is rebooted again
- 53:41Speaker 1: in another you know, twenty years, I think we should
- 53:44Speaker 1: write the script and it should be an all male reboot.
- 53:48Speaker 1: Did you know that they literally actually tried to make
- 53:50Speaker 1: an all male reboot of Charlie's Angels in the seventies.
- 53:53Speaker 1: I didn't. Yeah, Um, isn't just like James Bond Charlie's
- 53:57Speaker 1: Angels and all males literally every act movie is an
- 54:01Speaker 1: all male reboot. The Kingsman. So when we make it,
- 54:05Speaker 1: when we make it in twenty all of the angels
- 54:10Speaker 1: are non binary, one of them the one of them
- 54:14Speaker 1: is non binary, one of them is transfem. Yeah, it
- 54:17Speaker 1: has to be two different kinds of nonminarya and then
- 54:19Speaker 1: one of them is I think we need assist. We
- 54:23Speaker 1: need assist person to you know, ground everyone, because two
- 54:26Speaker 1: non binary people aren't going to get anything done. Okay,
- 54:30Speaker 1: sis lesbian um who's starring at it? Well, let's think
- 54:34Speaker 1: of like famous children, so be non binary. Blue Ivy
- 54:40Speaker 1: Carter is one of them. Oh Blue would and you know,
- 54:47Speaker 1: because we got to keep the girls young. Well, let's
- 54:50Speaker 1: say for the sake of the exercise that the reboot's
- 54:53Speaker 1: happening now. Okay, so we're making it today. We're making
- 54:57Speaker 1: a new Charlie's Angels. They're bimbos. The gotta all be bimbos. Okay,
- 55:02Speaker 1: So one of them is Addison Ray. Okay, Addison Ray,
- 55:06Speaker 1: Willow Willow Smith, you think, but can Willow act? Probably?
- 55:14Speaker 1: Can she be funny? Okay? Maybe we need a bigger
- 55:17Speaker 1: what about Oh I was if you said, okay, hunter
- 55:21Speaker 1: shape for Hunter could be funny, I was going to
- 55:24Speaker 1: actually say trace less at Sidney Sweeney. Sydney Sweeney. Okayney
- 55:31Speaker 1: Sweeney is the the Cameron, but she's not the center. Okay, no, no,
- 55:36Speaker 1: she's also playing lesbian. Okay. I was gonna say, Synda,
- 55:39Speaker 1: we'll just do the cast of Euphoria. No, no, no,
- 55:42Speaker 1: I actually don't think Hunters right for them. No, I
- 55:44Speaker 1: don't think so either. I think she's also she could
- 55:46Speaker 1: be funny, but she's not funny enough. I think it's
- 55:49Speaker 1: because I want this to be an action comedy. Mikaela
- 55:51Speaker 1: j is actually such a funny person and we didn't
- 55:56Speaker 1: really get to see that in Pose as much. And
- 55:58Speaker 1: I feel like MJ has like a a quanky something.
- 56:03Speaker 1: You know. Who I would actually rather have is um Hayley,
- 56:06Speaker 1: who played Lulu on Pose. I kind of think that
- 56:10Speaker 1: she I has some comedic chops and I think I
- 56:14Speaker 1: would love to see her do action and she is
- 56:18Speaker 1: maybe like the seductress of the group. Yeah, honestly, does
- 56:21Speaker 1: that mean Harry's going to be Bosley? Harry is just
- 56:25Speaker 1: gonna appear in every reboot we try, and and then
- 56:27Speaker 1: I think we do need a woman in Stem as
- 56:30Speaker 1: the as like the third as the third girl. Yeah, actually,
- 56:34Speaker 1: one of the Angels should be a fag. She's one
- 56:38Speaker 1: of the girls, you know. Yeah it's or No, Actually,
- 56:41Speaker 1: I think a Bosley should be a fag. Bosley is
- 56:44Speaker 1: played by Neil Patrick Harri. I like the idea, but
- 56:49Speaker 1: of a fag doing it, but after Neil did the Matrix,
- 56:51Speaker 1: I don't don't want him. Not Neil, don't fag cast
- 56:56Speaker 1: in anything ever again. Um. I think Bosley is like
- 56:59Speaker 1: Sandra Oh or like Tracy Allows. Santra Oh is a
- 57:02Speaker 1: very good boss. Yeah yeah, yeah, I really feel that
- 57:06Speaker 1: for her after like killing Eve, like I can, I
- 57:08Speaker 1: can get into that. Actually, I also think Bowen would
- 57:11Speaker 1: be a good boss. Bone would be an amazing Bossley,
- 57:14Speaker 1: but I feel like Bowen should actually be the villain.
- 57:16Speaker 1: Bowen should be the villain. Bowen should be the villain.
- 57:20Speaker 1: Or I think Bowen is like not the final boss villain,
- 57:23Speaker 1: but Bowen is like the Crispin Glover. Okay, okay, I
- 57:26Speaker 1: love that. Okay, yeah, it's the weird like assassin. Sure, yeah, okay,
- 57:31Speaker 1: I think actually I would I would sub if we're not,
- 57:34Speaker 1: I think it should be Barbie Very should be as
- 57:37Speaker 1: an angel because she is also extremely funny in a
- 57:42Speaker 1: in a UM I'm just an awkward human. She's really
- 57:45Speaker 1: good at being like awkward human funny. I think Aubrey
- 57:48Speaker 1: Plaza would also be great. She's too old. You think
- 57:52Speaker 1: she's too old old? Okay, what about Christin Stewart again,
- 57:56Speaker 1: Kristen Stewart again, Let's give her another chance? What about
- 58:00Speaker 1: got Nick in drag No one who's ever been on
- 58:04Speaker 1: drag Race? Okay, we're going to need to do a
- 58:12Speaker 1: search for the next l Woods type realitum no, no, no, no,
- 58:15Speaker 1: because that's what that's that's this movie that created the
- 58:17Speaker 1: problem in the first places. They were trying to break
- 58:19Speaker 1: out two stars, and we just need people that are
- 58:21Speaker 1: already stars. Okay, so I wanted to be a Cameron,
- 58:24Speaker 1: Lucy and Drew and they're playing like they're playing early twenties,
- 58:29Speaker 1: but they there's no there's no c g I. Like,
- 58:32Speaker 1: we just don't reference the fact that they are women
- 58:35Speaker 1: of a certain age like pen fifteen, yes, or they
- 58:38Speaker 1: could just be c g I t oblivion and there
- 58:41Speaker 1: we make them looks like a literal video game. The
- 58:45Speaker 1: whole movie just looks like, okay, maybe this reboot is
- 58:49Speaker 1: actually a video game. Yeah, yeah, yeah, okay, yeah, I've
- 58:54Speaker 1: never played but have now referenced on this podcast several times.
- 58:59Speaker 1: I don't know why. Yeah, that's that's very specific thing
