- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:17Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. In this episode number turn in
- 0:19Speaker 1: seventy four and to date, we've got an expert slate
- 0:22Speaker 1: of guests for you, including Tony Peterson, Ben O'Brien, Spencer
- 0:25Speaker 1: New Hearth, and we're going around the table to get
- 0:28Speaker 1: you prepped just in time for spring. On all things
- 0:31Speaker 1: turkey hunting. Today we are taking a hard left turn
- 0:38Speaker 1: off the usual path of white tails and talking about
- 0:40Speaker 1: our favorite two footed, two winged big dragon and joining
- 0:46Speaker 1: me to talk turkeys are kind of once a year
- 0:48Speaker 1: turkey episode. To my left, I have our baritone from
- 0:51Speaker 1: another mother, Spencer New Hearth. Spencer, thanks. I'm in Montana,
- 0:56Speaker 1: by the way, we're at the Mediator headquarters, so I've
- 0:59Speaker 1: got a whole little people around me to pick and
- 1:01Speaker 1: choose from, and I picked three three folks talk turkeys.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Next in the line was Ben talk to me, Ben, Well,
- 1:10Speaker 1: I'm glad to be on. I just feel like you're
- 1:13Speaker 1: in your description of turkeys and it's just your disdain
- 1:16Speaker 1: for everything but white Tails. I'm just not I don't
- 1:20Speaker 1: know if I'm happy to be here or not. We'll see.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I have no disdain for anything but whiteout. I just
- 1:24Speaker 1: really really love white tails. Can you can you give
- 1:27Speaker 1: us like a dirty second? Uh? Intro though to what
- 1:31Speaker 1: it is you do, because we actually haven't had had
- 1:33Speaker 1: you on the show yet. I haven't heard about your
- 1:35Speaker 1: podcast yet. Yeah, I've been boycotting the show for a while.
- 1:38Speaker 1: She've been asking me to come on. I'm glad you
- 1:40Speaker 1: finally caved. I finally caved. No, I have a program
- 1:43Speaker 1: called the Hunting Collective that's also a part of the
- 1:45Speaker 1: Meat Eater Network. Um, the director of Hunting here at
- 1:49Speaker 1: the Flagship, and um, that's what I do. Excellent. Next
- 1:54Speaker 1: we got Tony Peterson. Tony, welcome back. Thanks for having
- 1:57Speaker 1: me man. And you're doing some podcasting now, right, I am.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I was the one guy left who wasn't doing it,
- 2:03Speaker 1: so I'm doing it. And I'm doing two of them,
- 2:06Speaker 1: which means which makes me like the person who gets
- 2:10Speaker 1: two puppies and things they can train them. Because it
- 2:12Speaker 1: was not not not the best decision I've made. I
- 2:15Speaker 1: should have spaced them out, but I didn't, So here
- 2:17Speaker 1: I am What are they about? Uh? The one that
- 2:21Speaker 1: the one that we started with is a sporting dog
- 2:23Speaker 1: talk and it's just my love of bird dogs And
- 2:25Speaker 1: I don't know if you're paying attention in this office.
- 2:28Speaker 1: My favorite meat eater so far as moose. I've been
- 2:30Speaker 1: sneaking out to pet that dog a lot sents of
- 2:33Speaker 1: pictures to my daughter. And then I've got another one
- 2:35Speaker 1: called Hunt for Real, which is just do it yourself
- 2:38Speaker 1: hunting stuff that I you know, not not white tail specific,
- 2:41Speaker 1: not bow hunting specific, but just the kind of hunting
- 2:43Speaker 1: I want to talk about. I like it. I always
- 2:46Speaker 1: enjoy talking hunt with you, So I'm interested here hunt
- 2:49Speaker 1: you do you want to talk about? It should be good.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Uh turkeys Turkey tour, Ben, You're doing this turkey tour,
- 2:55Speaker 1: which got me thinking that now would be a great
- 2:57Speaker 1: time for us to talk about turkeys all this group,
- 2:59Speaker 1: because we're least some of us are gonna be turkey
- 3:01Speaker 1: hunting together soon hopefully. What is this that you're doing? Well,
- 3:07Speaker 1: you know, I like to kill turkey's mark, as you know,
- 3:10Speaker 1: and most of them I shoot right in their faces.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Uh yeah, all of them. I don't I like to
- 3:16Speaker 1: have ever missed turkey. Oh yeah, so you don't shoot
- 3:19Speaker 1: all of them in the face, So I said most.
- 3:20Speaker 1: If you heard me talking, I said most, But yeah,
- 3:24Speaker 1: all the ones that die I get shot fair enough.
- 3:27Speaker 1: So this it started when I was hunting. I had
- 3:30Speaker 1: a turkeys with a bow a lot, and I realized
- 3:33Speaker 1: that quite often, unlike you know, some states like South
- 3:36Speaker 1: Dakota have archery only seasons are are times of the year,
- 3:41Speaker 1: but most of the time, like you can choose your
- 3:43Speaker 1: weapon when it comes to turkeys. And I realized a
- 3:46Speaker 1: couple of years ago that I I have a better
- 3:49Speaker 1: chance to shoot him than with a shotgun then with
- 3:52Speaker 1: a bow. And then I also realized that around the
- 3:54Speaker 1: same time I had this like turkey an epiphany, that
- 3:57Speaker 1: my wife would say that she liked to buy chicken
- 4:00Speaker 1: a lot because we've never had enough white meat. And
- 4:04Speaker 1: so I it was like to this three years ago
- 4:06Speaker 1: I set out if I was like, if I was like,
- 4:07Speaker 1: I can kill ten turkeys in a year, I feel
- 4:10Speaker 1: like that would cover our white meat needs. There was
- 4:14Speaker 1: like a calculation behind that that yeah, no, I had.
- 4:16Speaker 1: It was and it's I'm not going to repeat it
- 4:18Speaker 1: because now I really want to know that now we
- 4:20Speaker 1: have to hear the fella rode in. It was like,
- 4:21Speaker 1: you're way wrong, and here's why he was right, and
- 4:25Speaker 1: he was right. But I just feel though, if you
- 4:28Speaker 1: just think about the meat that you get off a turkey, right,
- 4:31Speaker 1: if you if you would eat through one turkey roughly
- 4:34Speaker 1: a month, you'd be good to go, right, so at
- 4:37Speaker 1: least you kind of have it used to say twelve,
- 4:39Speaker 1: but I don't think I'll ever get to twelve. So
- 4:41Speaker 1: I think if I can get the double digits, that'd
- 4:43Speaker 1: be just fine. So it's it's a utility that I need.
- 4:47Speaker 1: The white meat, right, So I got last year, I
- 4:49Speaker 1: smoked a couple of breasts and sliced it for lunch
- 4:51Speaker 1: meat and vaccine it and it lasted for I mean
- 4:54Speaker 1: two weeks, was still really good. So you can replace
- 4:57Speaker 1: your lunch meat and take you can replace any really
- 4:59Speaker 1: an white meat intake that you have. My wife's used
- 5:02Speaker 1: to buy chicken. Now what about the dark beat? Oh,
- 5:06Speaker 1: the dark meat is good too, Okay, yeah, yeah, I
- 5:10Speaker 1: want to make sure you're not hating me and tell
- 5:12Speaker 1: us we're just talking about all our legs and thighs
- 5:14Speaker 1: ideas um turkeys, you guys, about our legs and thighs
- 5:19Speaker 1: our turkey legs and thighs. So that's how it started.
- 5:22Speaker 1: And I'm trying to been trying to kill ten turkeys
- 5:24Speaker 1: for the last two seasons and I have yet to
- 5:26Speaker 1: accomplish that. I think I killed six one year and
- 5:28Speaker 1: then four the next year, so ten total in two years.
- 5:30Speaker 1: But this year I've got it laid out to where
- 5:32Speaker 1: I might be able to hit my ten. So two questions.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Number one, is it true that several of us in
- 5:38Speaker 1: the office yesterday saw you put on a full body
- 5:41Speaker 1: turkey suit. Yes, that's true, okay. And the number two,
- 5:44Speaker 1: where are you going to be going this year to
- 5:46Speaker 1: try to pull off the ten turkey? I might wear
- 5:49Speaker 1: the suit. That would be something I like to kill turkey. Well,
- 5:53Speaker 1: being a turkey, I like to be an innovator, you know,
- 5:55Speaker 1: I like to innovate. Um be the decoy turkey version.
- 6:00Speaker 1: I can see the look on the turkey's face when
- 6:02Speaker 1: the decoy pulls out a shotgunt um. No. We're gonna
- 6:06Speaker 1: start in Texas. We're doing a nice hunt with the
- 6:08Speaker 1: boys at YEDI down there in Texas. I got a
- 6:10Speaker 1: couple of places by Atlanto River that we're gonna go
- 6:12Speaker 1: run around trying to kill some birds. So you can
- 6:15Speaker 1: kill four there, right, So that's that's one of the
- 6:18Speaker 1: only hunting reasons to like Texas. The rest of them,
- 6:21Speaker 1: like the rest of it is this bleak. They've got
- 6:23Speaker 1: the whole numbers thing figured out too. But you can
- 6:26Speaker 1: kill four is a nonresident there. So if I'm ever
- 6:29Speaker 1: so lucky to kill four there, then we're gonna come
- 6:32Speaker 1: back to Montana. We're going to set off. You, Spencer
- 6:35Speaker 1: and I are gonna set off for South Dakota, the
- 6:37Speaker 1: Black Hills. I'm excited about that. Yeah, a little public land.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I heard, like you said Newburgh was gonna be there, man,
- 6:42Speaker 1: I heard that the crew like tripled in size. Who's
- 6:45Speaker 1: who's doing this? How is it that this is your
- 6:48Speaker 1: Turkey tour? But you're asking Spencer about who's on the train.
- 6:51Speaker 1: We're trying to bring people in. We're trying to be
- 6:52Speaker 1: an open We're open here at the which I love. Yeah,
- 6:56Speaker 1: at the Turkey Tour. We're open to all commerce, Tony, Like,
- 7:00Speaker 1: you're welcome to come, listeners, listen whatever, We'll trap the pins.
- 7:04Speaker 1: We don't care. We want everybody to be hunting turks.
- 7:06Speaker 1: But I feel like this, like other people have now
- 7:09Speaker 1: co opted that that particular stop right. So Sam Soholt
- 7:12Speaker 1: and I are the resident South Dakotans. We've killed a
- 7:16Speaker 1: number of turkey there, so we're gonna be kind of
- 7:18Speaker 1: your guide like Ben mark Uh. There's also going to
- 7:23Speaker 1: be the hunting public guys there. I'm not sure specifically who.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I assume Zack and Jake Um and then Randy Newburgh.
- 7:30Speaker 1: So the crew didn't even like turkeys, though I don't
- 7:34Speaker 1: know he tried to. He he thought he had to
- 7:37Speaker 1: do a turkey hunting trip somewhere for some reason. He
- 7:39Speaker 1: tried to pawn it off on me once. He's like turkeys,
- 7:42Speaker 1: do you like him? Yeah? Well, and he's always said
- 7:44Speaker 1: he one in hunt with me, so maybe he did.
- 7:46Speaker 1: As it's why so he doesn't like turkeys, but he'll
- 7:49Speaker 1: trap muskrats. I guess so I don't. It's a hard
- 7:53Speaker 1: to understand individual. Anyway, that sounds like that's gonna be
- 7:55Speaker 1: a good time. It will be a really good time.
- 7:57Speaker 1: So good. I'll just go to the stop number two
- 8:00Speaker 1: on your tour and then we're gonna we're like thinking
- 8:03Speaker 1: about Wyoming. That's still possibility. The guys from weather Be
- 8:07Speaker 1: have some areas down there, right, So we're gonna drive
- 8:11Speaker 1: from there and we're gonna drive down to the beach
- 8:12Speaker 1: at Rendezvous, which is in Boise. So we're gonna roll
- 8:15Speaker 1: through Wyoming and see if we can't snake a bird
- 8:18Speaker 1: out of there. Then we're gonna go do the rendezvous
- 8:20Speaker 1: and then roll up through Idaho, do a couple of
- 8:23Speaker 1: days of hunting, and then roll to Oregon do a hunt,
- 8:26Speaker 1: and then go back to Montana do a hunt, and
- 8:28Speaker 1: then that would be the end. Is this gonna be
- 8:30Speaker 1: all consecutive days? Those will Yeah, Texas is next week?
- 8:35Speaker 1: Got you? So? So how many days in one fell
- 8:37Speaker 1: swoop of turkey on? You can do? Sevent I feel
- 8:40Speaker 1: like you you laid it out, like, oh, you just
- 8:42Speaker 1: naturally drive, you know, just a little ways and you're
- 8:45Speaker 1: at this other place. But there's like ten hour Johnson
- 8:47Speaker 1: there and yeah. The great thing is you could be
- 8:49Speaker 1: turkey hunting along the way. Right, you stop, you get
- 8:52Speaker 1: a sandwich, look for turkey, I wrote, hunt. Yeah, of
- 8:55Speaker 1: course I do. I'm trying to get this is a
- 8:57Speaker 1: this is utility, bro. I don't have time to be
- 9:00Speaker 1: I don't want time fair chase or anything like that.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Very busy, you're gonna shoot some white ones and if
- 9:06Speaker 1: you want to get ten two keys. Yeah, I feel
- 9:08Speaker 1: like I can get it done. But it's gonna be
- 9:09Speaker 1: a long it's a long shot. Let's just be honest.
- 9:12Speaker 1: What do you think your odds are, honestly like to
- 9:16Speaker 1: get ten? If you had to put, if I if
- 9:19Speaker 1: I was five bucks, big big, you're big, You're big,
- 9:23Speaker 1: Michigan boys really good deep. Uh. If I had to say,
- 9:27Speaker 1: I would say very low, very low. Maybe maybe ten percent,
- 9:30Speaker 1: maybe one in ten chance I could. Yeah, I think
- 9:33Speaker 1: it's gonna get you better than that. I just think
- 9:35Speaker 1: all those different states. You know, truck breaks down, you
- 9:38Speaker 1: miss one of the states, and other than Texas, all
- 9:41Speaker 1: public lands too, and none of them you know, I'll
- 9:44Speaker 1: have you, I'll have Spencer as a guide on South Dakota,
- 9:48Speaker 1: but most of them will just be running the gun
- 9:50Speaker 1: and finding spots where birds are and and going going
- 9:53Speaker 1: for it. So I feel like you're gonna need to
- 9:55Speaker 1: kill four in Texas to have a chance. The rest
- 9:58Speaker 1: is pretty It's it's gonna be tough. It's gonna be
- 10:00Speaker 1: tough four in Texas. So I'll probably spend a little
- 10:04Speaker 1: extra time in Texas just to make sure those four
- 10:07Speaker 1: in the bag. But I could kill more than one
- 10:09Speaker 1: in Montana too, So if I get done the tour
- 10:11Speaker 1: and I'm just one or two short, then I can
- 10:13Speaker 1: because it's broken down into region. In Montana, right there's
- 10:16Speaker 1: only one, one, one or two areas that are draw
- 10:18Speaker 1: but the rest of them are over the counter. So
- 10:19Speaker 1: I I feel like I'll give myself a little leeway. Um, yeah,
- 10:24Speaker 1: that's it's gonna be a hell of a trip. So
- 10:26Speaker 1: you're shooting for ten turkeys? Yeah, Spencer? How many where
- 10:30Speaker 1: are you hunting turkeys this year? And how many do
- 10:31Speaker 1: you think you're gonna get? So I got a few
- 10:33Speaker 1: tags in Montana. Um, And then I think I have
- 10:36Speaker 1: five tags in South Dakota, but turkey tags actually six year.
- 10:41Speaker 1: You should try to kill five in South Dakota. I know,
- 10:43Speaker 1: I can't. What I still have my I still a
- 10:46Speaker 1: resident there. You're still a resident, so you gotta you
- 10:49Speaker 1: get your non resident turkey Montana turkey. Yes, So I
- 10:52Speaker 1: have a few tags in Montana as a non resident.
- 10:54Speaker 1: And then in South Dakota, I think I have six tags,
- 10:57Speaker 1: but like three of them three of them are areas
- 11:00Speaker 1: that I have never hunted in like not even ben
- 11:03Speaker 1: just because there was some leftover tags and it's my
- 11:05Speaker 1: last time being a resident there, I figured I would
- 11:08Speaker 1: load up on tags, So I think i'll maybe feel
- 11:11Speaker 1: half of those, like three out of six in South
- 11:13Speaker 1: Dakota and then Montana. This is all foreign to me,
- 11:16Speaker 1: so maybe one out of the two tags that I
- 11:19Speaker 1: have here to Turkey and plans. I got some plans.
- 11:23Speaker 1: I'm only shooting for five. I'm gonna I'm gonna buy
- 11:26Speaker 1: my three tags for Nebraska see if I can see
- 11:29Speaker 1: if I can knock out three down there in public
- 11:30Speaker 1: land and hunting home in Minnesota, and then kind of
- 11:33Speaker 1: bought a random tag down in Iowa because I want
- 11:37Speaker 1: to scout some public land down there for deer, so
- 11:38Speaker 1: that'll be a shotgun deal. But I'm if everything goes
- 11:41Speaker 1: perfectly for me, I'll get halfway to the ten turkey goal,
- 11:43Speaker 1: and that that'd make me happy because I'd also be
- 11:45Speaker 1: done turkey hunting by the time the good fishing starts there. Yeah,
- 11:49Speaker 1: and I feel like I'll probably take an interlude for
- 11:51Speaker 1: bear season at some point. But if you're shooting for
- 11:54Speaker 1: ten and you get six, you feel real good about life.
- 11:58Speaker 1: You're happy with six score is in your tests? Absolutely?
- 12:01Speaker 1: Have you ever met me? We've talked about this many times,
- 12:05Speaker 1: Mark Kenyan. I very much feel that I shoot for
- 12:07Speaker 1: average because I don't want anybody to think that I'm
- 12:10Speaker 1: real good at anything. Yesterday bends like you know, I
- 12:12Speaker 1: piss excellence. I'm like, no, I feel like you're more
- 12:14Speaker 1: of the type that ships adequate. That's very true. I
- 12:21Speaker 1: strive to be just good enough not to impress anybody.
- 12:25Speaker 1: What are your Turkey plans? I mean I have the
- 12:27Speaker 1: most unexciting plans compared to the whole group, So I
- 12:30Speaker 1: brought the right people in because I'm born. We only
- 12:32Speaker 1: get one tag in Michigan, so I've got that, and
- 12:36Speaker 1: then in South Dakota. Yeah, and then I lost my
- 12:40Speaker 1: Hio spots. So I usually Turkey on Ohio. But that's
- 12:42Speaker 1: not happening now for sure. Um So the only other
- 12:46Speaker 1: thing would be if I try to slip into Montana hunt. Oh. Yeah,
- 12:49Speaker 1: I am going to Ohio for a child's birthday party,
- 12:53Speaker 1: and I was thinking that maybe while I was there,
- 12:55Speaker 1: I would sneak out. You're going all the way to
- 12:57Speaker 1: Ohio for a child's birthday party? Yeah? I like this
- 12:59Speaker 1: child I'm a child. No, it's a child of my brother,
- 13:03Speaker 1: so I like it. Definitely got to clarify that I
- 13:07Speaker 1: really like this child. This child is cool. Context I
- 13:14Speaker 1: met him on the internet. So we've got We've got
- 13:21Speaker 1: multiple turkey seasons in Michigan. You have to pick a
- 13:23Speaker 1: certain bracket like many states do. And I'm always finding
- 13:27Speaker 1: myself debating, like do I want the early season? Do
- 13:29Speaker 1: I want to wait in the late seasons? It's a
- 13:31Speaker 1: later bracket, Like you can get the whole month of
- 13:33Speaker 1: May if you get the late tag. If you do
- 13:35Speaker 1: the early tag, you only get two weeks, and sometimes
- 13:37Speaker 1: it's not a bunch of weeks, like two weekends. You
- 13:39Speaker 1: don't get like three weekends on either side, so you're
- 13:42Speaker 1: more limited. I always used to like that early season.
- 13:45Speaker 1: I just felt like there were certain things going that
- 13:46Speaker 1: made it better for me. Um, But I am curious
- 13:49Speaker 1: what the consensus is in this group. What part of
- 13:52Speaker 1: the spring do you think is the best for turkey
- 13:54Speaker 1: hunting early, Let's say like early being sometime early April.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Will say mid season is like late April, early May,
- 14:02Speaker 1: late seasons anything past that date? Do you, Tony, do
- 14:05Speaker 1: you have something that jumps out like, what do you
- 14:07Speaker 1: think the best Turkey ning is. If I'm on private land,
- 14:10Speaker 1: I like to get out there right away. I love
- 14:12Speaker 1: the early season birds. A lot of times on public land,
- 14:15Speaker 1: by the time May rolls around, those parking lots will
- 14:18Speaker 1: clear out a little bit. Those birds are roman they're
- 14:20Speaker 1: eating bugs, leafed out, they got a lot of food,
- 14:23Speaker 1: they're covering ground, and the pressure is way down. So
- 14:27Speaker 1: it's just it just depends a situational But generally that
- 14:30Speaker 1: would be my decision, or that would be my my preference.
- 14:33Speaker 1: I guess, yeah, I'm right, I'm right there with you. Yeah,
- 14:35Speaker 1: I think that, Like I've had most of my success
- 14:37Speaker 1: in our earlier early seasons. As soon as I can
- 14:39Speaker 1: possibly get out there, even if I have to battle
- 14:41Speaker 1: some shitty weather, you know, to do it, I feel
- 14:43Speaker 1: like that's you know, for sure, on private lands public lands,
- 14:48Speaker 1: I'm usually just taking when I can get a type
- 14:49Speaker 1: of type of guy. But if I had, if I
- 14:52Speaker 1: had to pick, I would I would go away, Spencer.
- 14:56Speaker 1: My preference would probably be like, uh me in April,
- 14:59Speaker 1: I don't want to. Are you many pressured Turkey areas
- 15:01Speaker 1: so people aren't a concern, but weather can be like
- 15:05Speaker 1: the beginning of April. It would not be uncommon to
- 15:08Speaker 1: have a big snowstorm in South Dakota or something, and
- 15:11Speaker 1: I don't want to have to worry about that. So, uh,
- 15:14Speaker 1: mid April is probably my favorite time. The turkeys are uneducated, Uh,
- 15:18Speaker 1: they're excited because the weather is nice as well. That's
- 15:21Speaker 1: probably my favorite time of year to be out. Yeah,
- 15:24Speaker 1: that's always why I picked the early tag for Michigan,
- 15:27Speaker 1: which opens usually April, which is as early as we
- 15:29Speaker 1: can get. I always felt like they have been pressured yet,
- 15:31Speaker 1: just seems like they're more susceptible to calls, just a
- 15:34Speaker 1: little more gullable to everything. But I am definitely not
- 15:38Speaker 1: like the expert turkey guy. I find myself to be
- 15:40Speaker 1: a competent turkey guy. I get my turkey every year,
- 15:42Speaker 1: but I'm not the guy that goes around and kills
- 15:43Speaker 1: ten um. So what I don't really know is when
- 15:46Speaker 1: do you think like the best like gabbling is where
- 15:48Speaker 1: turkey is the most talkative. Is it early too? I
- 15:50Speaker 1: mean it just really depends. There's so many factors. You know,
- 15:53Speaker 1: I've seen I've seen turkeys that won't gobble because well
- 15:58Speaker 1: in Texas, I've seen turkey's just won't ever gobble or
- 16:01Speaker 1: rarely do because not because pressure of hunters, but professors
- 16:04Speaker 1: of coyotes. Coyotes affect that. So I feel like you've
- 16:09Speaker 1: got to really know the birds you're like, just like
- 16:13Speaker 1: white tails or anything else, you have to know the
- 16:15Speaker 1: birds you're hunting, like what what will cause them too,
- 16:18Speaker 1: because if they're unpressured, there's no hunters, there's no predators.
- 16:21Speaker 1: They feel comfortable, I mean, get after them as soon
- 16:24Speaker 1: as they possibly as soon as the sun comes out.
- 16:27Speaker 1: They're normally lighten it up well, And that's if you're
- 16:30Speaker 1: asking when are you gonna hear the most gobbling first light?
- 16:33Speaker 1: When are you gonna run into the bird that you
- 16:34Speaker 1: can call in and kill? A lot of times that's
- 16:37Speaker 1: the middle of the day stuff, you know, I mean,
- 16:38Speaker 1: especially if it's real early season stuff where they're you know,
- 16:42Speaker 1: they seem to go from super flocked up two smaller
- 16:45Speaker 1: flocks and then throughout the day they might peel off
- 16:48Speaker 1: and go cruising or something. So if you want to
- 16:50Speaker 1: hear lots of birds and see all that activity out
- 16:53Speaker 1: in the fields first light, but a lot of times
- 16:55Speaker 1: you're just looking for the one bird that will work.
- 16:57Speaker 1: But what about time of year for best gobbling time
- 17:01Speaker 1: of year, you're more gobbling early. Yeah, I mean, but
- 17:04Speaker 1: you'll hear you know, it's the same thing. That's like,
- 17:08Speaker 1: you'll hear a ton of gobbling at sunrise, but if
- 17:10Speaker 1: you hear, if you get a bird to fire up
- 17:12Speaker 1: at ten o'clock in the morning, you kill him. And
- 17:14Speaker 1: late season you hear way fewer birds gobbling, But if
- 17:17Speaker 1: you get one that's wants to talk to you, that
- 17:19Speaker 1: bird you can talk him in. You know. Do you
- 17:21Speaker 1: think that's like the late rut buck that you get
- 17:24Speaker 1: those big old cruisers like November, and they're a little
- 17:28Speaker 1: more acceptable because I know there's still a hot door
- 17:30Speaker 1: around and and they're the only ones left doing that.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Is that kind of what you think of those late
- 17:34Speaker 1: season turkeys are doing like there's an old guy that
- 17:36Speaker 1: knows it can still be had. I think it's because
- 17:38Speaker 1: the hens aren't concentrated anymore. I think there's so much
- 17:41Speaker 1: more food available and there's nesting, you know, so they're
- 17:45Speaker 1: they gotta just try harder to find any lady that's
- 17:47Speaker 1: ready or that might be ready. So I think they're
- 17:49Speaker 1: just covering more ground and more susceptible to those you
- 17:52Speaker 1: know if that's what mean, It really depends. I mean,
- 17:54Speaker 1: I learned so much about turkey movement hunting this franch
- 17:57Speaker 1: in Texas where like said, turkeys did gobble. It was
- 18:01Speaker 1: it was like pattern a white tail. I mean, I
- 18:03Speaker 1: would I knew I had two birds when I when
- 18:06Speaker 1: I ended up killing that, I knew no dead they
- 18:12Speaker 1: dead meat. Uh. I handed him for four days and
- 18:16Speaker 1: I had him that he did not never gobblet one time.
- 18:18Speaker 1: He had two hands with him the first day, but
- 18:20Speaker 1: then he would split. He would fly down with his hands.
- 18:23Speaker 1: They would walk over to a feeder do their Texas
- 18:26Speaker 1: turkey thing, and then they the hands will drop down
- 18:29Speaker 1: into the bottom and he would leave him and go cruise. Right.
- 18:32Speaker 1: He had his little he had like a route that
- 18:34Speaker 1: he would cruise. He would go up this little food plot,
- 18:37Speaker 1: strut around a little bit, gobble maybe once maybe and
- 18:41Speaker 1: the sun if the sun came out, and he felt
- 18:42Speaker 1: real comfortable and warm and happy, and then he would
- 18:45Speaker 1: come back around, hit this road and just peck his
- 18:47Speaker 1: way back on the road, eating bugs, doing his thing,
- 18:49Speaker 1: get back to his hands and then stay with them
- 18:52Speaker 1: in the afternoon and then fly up to the roost.
- 18:54Speaker 1: And so there was two birds that were doing kind
- 18:56Speaker 1: of the same thing off the same group, and because
- 18:59Speaker 1: they would only got but like I only heard him
- 19:01Speaker 1: every gob once or twice the two of them. You
- 19:03Speaker 1: just had to pattern him. So I got I got
- 19:05Speaker 1: to where I just would sit on the road because
- 19:07Speaker 1: I knew I'd wait till he flew down. I'd watch
- 19:09Speaker 1: him because I wasn't gonna kill him on the feeder.
- 19:11Speaker 1: I'm saying, I'm not doing that. I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 19:13Speaker 1: let them do what they do. They drop down on
- 19:15Speaker 1: the bottom, and I just go get ahead of him
- 19:16Speaker 1: and get on the road between the food plot and
- 19:18Speaker 1: where I knew he was headed. It took me three
- 19:20Speaker 1: days by end up killing him, and it was a
- 19:23Speaker 1: completely silent affair. I'm just sitting there up against the tree,
- 19:26Speaker 1: had a little brush in front of me, look over
- 19:28Speaker 1: and he's just walking down the road doing what he
- 19:29Speaker 1: was doing, and I just swung up and shot him.
- 19:31Speaker 1: So he didn't call him in. Does anyone else feel
- 19:35Speaker 1: like it's a little I was talking to Donny Vincent
- 19:38Speaker 1: once about it, and he described this like so simply
- 19:43Speaker 1: but like perfectly for me too. When it comes like
- 19:45Speaker 1: turkey hunting, you kind of want him to do the
- 19:48Speaker 1: thing like I kind of like, if I'm gonna kill
- 19:50Speaker 1: a turkey, I want him to do the thing I
- 19:51Speaker 1: wanted to be Goblin's head off, tearing into me like
- 19:54Speaker 1: my blood's pumping, and I shoot him that way? Does
- 19:58Speaker 1: that the way you kill him? Was that just as satisfying?
- 20:01Speaker 1: Or do you kind of like I kind of would
- 20:03Speaker 1: have been more fun if he could have been gobblin
- 20:04Speaker 1: and I was calling and he was gabbling and I
- 20:06Speaker 1: was calling. I don't not look at it that way.
- 20:08Speaker 1: I mean, it was cool because it was even more
- 20:11Speaker 1: exciting to me because I had to do some work.
- 20:13Speaker 1: And I feel like you, like you ask a lot
- 20:14Speaker 1: of turkeys what a turkey's doing, they don't know. They
- 20:17Speaker 1: don't know because the equation is normally here bird and roost,
- 20:20Speaker 1: go to where bird is set up, call, bird comes
- 20:24Speaker 1: in or not, bird goes away, I find another bird,
- 20:27Speaker 1: or get around in that same bird. So you're not
- 20:29Speaker 1: really understanding its movements or where it wants to go
- 20:32Speaker 1: because then it's so susceptible to your calls at that time.
- 20:35Speaker 1: So when you get in a situation where you have
- 20:37Speaker 1: to actually learn its movements and understand like what it
- 20:39Speaker 1: wants to do and where it might be at a
- 20:42Speaker 1: certain time of day, rather than just manipulating its movements
- 20:45Speaker 1: and makes see if it works. I think that's a
- 20:47Speaker 1: little more. It was more exciting to me in that
- 20:49Speaker 1: way because I really had to. I mean, turkeys are
- 20:51Speaker 1: not They're not, dear man, that they see you and
- 20:55Speaker 1: if you move like they're not something you can still hunt.
- 20:58Speaker 1: They're not something you can just set up on and
- 20:59Speaker 1: hope they walk under a tree. You know, it's it's
- 21:01Speaker 1: not something that's not because that's not how you hunt them.
- 21:04Speaker 1: So to be able to do that was more exciting
- 21:06Speaker 1: for me. But I could see I mean I love
- 21:09Speaker 1: that more than any more than anything in the in
- 21:11Speaker 1: the woods, seeing a turkey strut, you know. So I
- 21:13Speaker 1: could see somebody being a little like if one just
- 21:15Speaker 1: I had one, I shot four bird. I don't have
- 21:18Speaker 1: four birds. Last year, two of them didn't gobble and
- 21:21Speaker 1: I didn't call him in. One was in the pouring
- 21:23Speaker 1: down rain in Florida. We were just nobody would sit,
- 21:25Speaker 1: So I was like, I'll just go sit rather than
- 21:26Speaker 1: sit to lodge, I'm just gonna sit in the sit
- 21:29Speaker 1: in the blind. I'd rather just be wet in there
- 21:31Speaker 1: than be drying. And I just had a bird come
- 21:34Speaker 1: around the corner with two hands pouring down rain, Like
- 21:36Speaker 1: I didn't I watch my pattern go through the rain
- 21:38Speaker 1: when I shot, and I just had a decoy on
- 21:41Speaker 1: and he just turned the corner, saw the decoy, and slowly,
- 21:43Speaker 1: just as a wet, cold, miserable bird would be, just
- 21:47Speaker 1: kind of slowly made his way over. I went to
- 21:50Speaker 1: the decoy and I shot him. So, speaking of the
- 21:53Speaker 1: rain and stuff, um, I'm always trying to and you
- 21:56Speaker 1: allude to his a little bit, but you have you, guys,
- 21:58Speaker 1: seen any somewhat consistent connections between certain conditions and gobling,
- 22:05Speaker 1: like when X happens, gobling is really great, like cold
- 22:08Speaker 1: front comes through a great goblin or this kind of weather,
- 22:11Speaker 1: this kind of anything is do you guys seen anything
- 22:13Speaker 1: like rules like that that you've identified, Peach weather Man,
- 22:18Speaker 1: I want the sun out in the morning and not
- 22:20Speaker 1: a lot of wind, a lot of rain, anything like that.
- 22:22Speaker 1: I wanted to be nice, nice spring weather. That seems
- 22:26Speaker 1: to be the best. Yeah, you get a lot of
- 22:28Speaker 1: wind or a like a random snowstorm that rolls through
- 22:31Speaker 1: in in April, or a ton of rain that typically
- 22:34Speaker 1: shuts down goblin. Like U s earlier about time of year,
- 22:38Speaker 1: I would say there are much more important factors, like
- 22:41Speaker 1: what the weather is doing that day, how much pressure
- 22:43Speaker 1: they've had, that kind of thing, because I think nasty
- 22:47Speaker 1: weather can really shut down turkeys. Yeah, I was talking
- 22:49Speaker 1: about that burn in Texas that was patternable. He was
- 22:52Speaker 1: only pasterable because nobody hunted him. There's a ranch where
- 22:54Speaker 1: like they just love to hear they didn't care about turkeys,
- 22:57Speaker 1: and so I was like one of the only guys
- 22:58Speaker 1: who cared about hunting turkeys. And this is you know,
- 23:01Speaker 1: I've watched that bird through spotting scopes do the same
- 23:05Speaker 1: thing based almost every day, Like he would make little
- 23:08Speaker 1: variances based on like if you saw some food somewhere
- 23:10Speaker 1: that he wanted to go. But he starts to learn
- 23:12Speaker 1: that that's that they are habitual in that in spring.
- 23:18Speaker 1: But they're always getting bumped off of their route. You know,
- 23:21Speaker 1: they're always getting somewhere different and they're all you know,
- 23:24Speaker 1: so you learn that about them. But yeah, I mean
- 23:27Speaker 1: when the sun comes out, I I always get your
- 23:30Speaker 1: turkey hunting and there's like a cloud and the sun
- 23:32Speaker 1: comes from behind the cloud, like you just picture that
- 23:34Speaker 1: gob would be like, oh yeah, yeah, and that's what
- 23:38Speaker 1: you know, that's what that gobbles about sometimes, just like yep,
- 23:40Speaker 1: let's do this, you know, feeling good. So I think
- 23:43Speaker 1: that's sometimes, you know, the best reaction. Yeah, I've certainly
- 23:47Speaker 1: seen the same thing. But I've seen that with the rain.
- 23:50Speaker 1: One thing that I remember reading a long time ago
- 23:52Speaker 1: and saw it to be truth. I think there's lots
- 23:55Speaker 1: of times when the steady rain you'll get these birds
- 23:58Speaker 1: often go out to the middle fields. Um. So that's
- 24:00Speaker 1: like one thing I feel like pretty consistently have seen.
- 24:02Speaker 1: So if it's raining, I'll go obviously because you know
- 24:05Speaker 1: you're gonna be able to see him. Yeah, have you
- 24:07Speaker 1: guys found any other like what do you do when
- 24:10Speaker 1: it's raining or what do you do when it's snowing
- 24:12Speaker 1: and shuts things down in that kind of way? Do
- 24:14Speaker 1: you guys have a go to for that kind of
- 24:15Speaker 1: unique circumstance? But so two years ago I killed a
- 24:19Speaker 1: turkey in a blizzard in the Black Hills where we'll
- 24:22Speaker 1: be um and I wrote about that story for Field
- 24:25Speaker 1: and Stream. But it's a blizzard roll then it was
- 24:28Speaker 1: really nasty, uh, And it was like I only had
- 24:31Speaker 1: a few days in the Black Hills, and prior to
- 24:34Speaker 1: that it was like seventy degrees and beautiful, um, and
- 24:37Speaker 1: so I felt pretty good about where I was going
- 24:39Speaker 1: to find these turkeys because I had seen them there
- 24:41Speaker 1: before and they were not talking, they were not there. Um.
- 24:47Speaker 1: It just had to shut them down, basically. So I
- 24:49Speaker 1: got in my pickup and I drove and drove and drove,
- 24:51Speaker 1: and I finally, Uh, the snow was like super fresh
- 24:54Speaker 1: because it was constantly coming down, and I cut some
- 24:56Speaker 1: turkey tracks across your driving specifically to do that, to
- 24:59Speaker 1: try to tracks just like sea turkeys anything, because the
- 25:02Speaker 1: Black Hills are a lot of national forest um and
- 25:05Speaker 1: so like basically I threw my turkey hunting plan out
- 25:07Speaker 1: of the window and gotten my pickup because I only
- 25:09Speaker 1: had a few days. Uh and and basically road hunting,
- 25:13Speaker 1: that's not what it ended up being. I cut some
- 25:14Speaker 1: tracks and found some turkeys on a bit of public ground.
- 25:17Speaker 1: But uh, if it's super snowy or the weather is
- 25:20Speaker 1: really nasty, I don't know if there's much you can
- 25:23Speaker 1: do out there to like Killy Gobbler, So yeah, if
- 25:26Speaker 1: you man, if you got a lot of ground, though,
- 25:28Speaker 1: I killed the bird in the Black Hills in the blizzard,
- 25:30Speaker 1: and it was basically what you said we were on
- 25:33Speaker 1: in this bird that he would roost above this you know,
- 25:35Speaker 1: it was a pretty big creek and as the damn river,
- 25:38Speaker 1: and he would roost above it. And then he I
- 25:39Speaker 1: hunted for two days where he would just always fly
- 25:42Speaker 1: to the different side if I was on one side river,
- 25:44Speaker 1: so much would fly to the other side if I
- 25:45Speaker 1: was on the other side. And it was it was
- 25:47Speaker 1: flying up to roost and flying down from roost. That
- 25:49Speaker 1: happened to me four straight times where he just did
- 25:51Speaker 1: the exact topsit thing of what I've who was wanting
- 25:54Speaker 1: him to do and had planned he might do. And
- 25:56Speaker 1: so I just remember it started snowing, and I thought, well,
- 25:59Speaker 1: I gotta get up and trying to find a bird
- 26:00Speaker 1: hunkered away somewhere. If I could find a gobbler hunkered
- 26:03Speaker 1: away trying to stay warm and some kind of like
- 26:06Speaker 1: right Parian corridor, a bunch of like tall grass, I
- 26:08Speaker 1: can find one like, then I can crawl him up.
- 26:11Speaker 1: It was windy and cold, I can crawl him up.
- 26:13Speaker 1: He's not going anywhere, and he's gonna want to stay tight.
- 26:15Speaker 1: So I ended up finding a bird just on this
- 26:18Speaker 1: like back side of this this old lady's house, and
- 26:20Speaker 1: there was a ridge behind it that went all the
- 26:22Speaker 1: way down to this river, and there was two or
- 26:24Speaker 1: three gobblers just kind of tucked up in this little
- 26:26Speaker 1: behind this little bank, this little clay bank. And I
- 26:30Speaker 1: saw him from the road over the lady's house. Said, hey,
- 26:32Speaker 1: you mind, fine? She said sure. So she's like, yeah,
- 26:35Speaker 1: there are there there all the time. I was like, okay, good.
- 26:37Speaker 1: So so I parked my truck and went around and
- 26:40Speaker 1: crawled up the hill and crawled right up to him
- 26:42Speaker 1: and shot on. It was a big gobbler's one of
- 26:45Speaker 1: the bigges scholars ever shot. And that works someplace in
- 26:48Speaker 1: the Black Hills because there's a ton of public ground.
- 26:50Speaker 1: There's a ton of people who will allow you to
- 26:52Speaker 1: hunt because there's not like a ton of hunting pressure,
- 26:55Speaker 1: and so it's not a common to even find private ground.
- 26:58Speaker 1: If there was a snowstorm in a bunch the turkeys
- 27:00Speaker 1: hunkered down in some feed lot or whatever, that you
- 27:04Speaker 1: would be able to get permission. I'm not saying that
- 27:05Speaker 1: works everywhere, because it doesn't, but Black Hills are kind
- 27:08Speaker 1: of an exception to that. Rule if it wasn't that case,
- 27:11Speaker 1: I don't know what you define a snowstorm Turkey. If
- 27:14Speaker 1: you have like a least property or a small properties,
- 27:17Speaker 1: like you know, you're not going to get a trade around. Yeah,
- 27:22Speaker 1: so you know, the rain thinks pretty easy, I think.
- 27:24Speaker 1: I mean, you get out to the fields, and I
- 27:25Speaker 1: don't I don't know if they're doing that because they
- 27:27Speaker 1: feel safer out there, you know, because they're some of
- 27:29Speaker 1: their senses are a little bit dull if you're in
- 27:31Speaker 1: a rain. But you know, they may be eating worms.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Who knows, right. But one thing that I see a
- 27:37Speaker 1: lot of people they don't hunt in the wind. And
- 27:39Speaker 1: I'll never forget. I used to go down to northern Missouri,
- 27:41Speaker 1: where where I grew up in southeastern Minnesota. The first
- 27:43Speaker 1: like big out of state hunt ever did was just
- 27:45Speaker 1: driving northern Missouri and camp on public land and one
- 27:48Speaker 1: of the first birds I ever killed down there. Um,
- 27:51Speaker 1: it was super windy. You know, we're camping in a
- 27:53Speaker 1: ten It was like thirty mile pro hour sustained winds
- 27:55Speaker 1: and we had to hunt, nothing else to do. So
- 27:57Speaker 1: I went out in the morning and I was I
- 27:59Speaker 1: just remember walking along through the spot and I got
- 28:02Speaker 1: behind this hill and it was like quiet, just to
- 28:04Speaker 1: hit that little micro climate is probably not the right word,
- 28:07Speaker 1: but it was just down wind. You were out of
- 28:09Speaker 1: the wind. And I looked up in the trees and
- 28:11Speaker 1: there was turkeys roosted all over. I could see them silhouette.
- 28:13Speaker 1: I just sat down started calling that first light. Big
- 28:16Speaker 1: Tom flew down dumped him, and I was like hmmm.
- 28:19Speaker 1: And so I started paying attention to if it's windy
- 28:21Speaker 1: the night before, where are they going to roost? And
- 28:23Speaker 1: so like, you go to some places in Texas or somewhere,
- 28:26Speaker 1: there might just be a roost right where that's the roost.
- 28:29Speaker 1: But a lot of places you go to the you know,
- 28:31Speaker 1: drift less area in southeastern Minnesota and it's bluffs or
- 28:34Speaker 1: you know a lot of places. I've seen it in Oklahoma.
- 28:37Speaker 1: I've seen it in Nebraska. If the wind's coming in
- 28:39Speaker 1: a certain way in the evening, they're going to roost
- 28:41Speaker 1: according to that, And you can play off of that
- 28:43Speaker 1: a little bit and so not then you're not taking
- 28:47Speaker 1: yourself out of the game and saying I'm not gonna hunt.
- 28:48Speaker 1: You can at least start with some kind of strategy
- 28:50Speaker 1: and they you know, they may not be gobbling as much.
- 28:52Speaker 1: But if you can get if you can get in
- 28:54Speaker 1: on them, which you usually can if it's windy, then
- 28:56Speaker 1: you can be set up where that bird that might
- 28:58Speaker 1: not work in a traditional situation because it's windy, he
- 29:00Speaker 1: might go, well it's worth it, you know, or it
- 29:02Speaker 1: gets light out he sees your decoy hundred fifty yards away.
- 29:05Speaker 1: So there's something to that. So you're saying that they
- 29:08Speaker 1: tend to roost in areas like back under a ridge
- 29:12Speaker 1: or something kind of shelter to get shelter, right, Is
- 29:14Speaker 1: that what you're saying. I see it a lot if
- 29:16Speaker 1: they if it's available to you know, sometimes train doesn't
- 29:19Speaker 1: do it. But it's the same thing. Like you know,
- 29:21Speaker 1: you just sometimes if you're if you're hunting elk early
- 29:23Speaker 1: season or you're hunting white tails or something, you walk
- 29:25Speaker 1: into a place and it's a little cooler and you
- 29:28Speaker 1: can feel it. You know, they're a where ever those
- 29:30Speaker 1: animals live out there, they know all those little microclimates.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Or the deer that if it's hot, he goes in
- 29:34Speaker 1: beds in the in the corn field where you know,
- 29:37Speaker 1: where you can catch the wind just right in the
- 29:38Speaker 1: soil is cool or whatever, and they know all that stuff,
- 29:41Speaker 1: and like like Ben said about we a lot of
- 29:44Speaker 1: times we don't really know what's going on out there,
- 29:46Speaker 1: you know. It's part of it's we're not watching their
- 29:47Speaker 1: day to day patterns in the circuit they're making, and
- 29:50Speaker 1: we're just kind of like dipping into their world hoping,
- 29:53Speaker 1: hoping it plays out our way. Then we dip out.
- 29:55Speaker 1: And the more you more time you spend out there,
- 29:57Speaker 1: you see stuff like that happen. You go, that's not
- 29:59Speaker 1: an accident what they're doing. Oh yeah, yeah, I learned
- 30:02Speaker 1: that then Iowa a couple years ago too. I mean,
- 30:04Speaker 1: you just like we're hunting John Dudley's place, and you
- 30:08Speaker 1: just could get up on a bluff and watch these
- 30:10Speaker 1: turkeys do their thing like and watch him come out.
- 30:12Speaker 1: When it was nice. It would if it was sunny,
- 30:14Speaker 1: right off, they would fly down all the roofs and
- 30:16Speaker 1: go strut right and then they would get in some
- 30:18Speaker 1: kind of bottom or some river bottom, and they would
- 30:21Speaker 1: feed in there and they would feed up. They were
- 30:23Speaker 1: feeding up into a direction where they know they would
- 30:25Speaker 1: hit this top food plot, and when the afternoon would come,
- 30:28Speaker 1: the gobbler would be out there by himself strutting right,
- 30:30Speaker 1: he would leave his hands and go out and do
- 30:32Speaker 1: a little show, and then they would drop back down
- 30:34Speaker 1: and kind of work their way back to where they started.
- 30:37Speaker 1: And we killed some birds just doing that, you know.
- 30:39Speaker 1: But it was also just you learn them like a
- 30:41Speaker 1: lot of turkeys hunters just don't do. You don't learn
- 30:44Speaker 1: like you. It would be hard to consistently kill whitetail
- 30:47Speaker 1: if you if you couldn't, if if you had no
- 30:49Speaker 1: idea what they did, that it would be imposcess. The
- 30:53Speaker 1: greatest silver statement I've ever heard. If you're just like,
- 30:56Speaker 1: I'll just go what I'll do is I'll just go
- 30:57Speaker 1: sit in a tree close to where I think they are,
- 31:00Speaker 1: and then I'll grunt and rattle and then I'll kill him.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Like you would never one you would ever learn anything right,
- 31:06Speaker 1: and two you would never do you would It would
- 31:08Speaker 1: be terrible. I'm gonna say this, that's not an untried practice.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Like I mean, there are people out there who are
- 31:15Speaker 1: doing exactly what you just described there, yep, And they
- 31:18Speaker 1: might every once in a while you might get yourself
- 31:20Speaker 1: with a nice buck, but it's not going to be consistent.
- 31:23Speaker 1: But I think that's what turkey hunters missed. So often
- 31:25Speaker 1: is that there is this. You know, all birds all
- 31:28Speaker 1: I find. All birds are different. That's what makes turkey
- 31:31Speaker 1: hunts are damn fun. You know you've run into you may.
- 31:34Speaker 1: I have had stretches where it's like this is too easy.
- 31:36Speaker 1: I mean when I was living in Illinois, I every
- 31:38Speaker 1: opening day, I'd take that first season, just like you,
- 31:41Speaker 1: the first season. I'd get my tag, and I like,
- 31:43Speaker 1: first season, that's what I want. I give my first
- 31:45Speaker 1: season tag, and I never hunted more in an hour
- 31:46Speaker 1: or two. You know, this is a little bit of
- 31:49Speaker 1: light scouting and find a bird and have a nice
- 31:52Speaker 1: day and bamp done. You know, so you get in
- 31:54Speaker 1: those grooves where it's like this is easy. Then you
- 31:56Speaker 1: get to like a swamp bird in Louisiana that just
- 31:59Speaker 1: like lives in mangled mess of nothing and will not
- 32:03Speaker 1: do what you need him to do. And then you
- 32:06Speaker 1: think like this is impossible. You know, you go somewhere
- 32:09Speaker 1: like in Texas where they won't gobble, and you're just
- 32:11Speaker 1: like I see him. When they're gobbling, it seems like
- 32:14Speaker 1: they're everywhere. When they're quiet, it seems like there's no turkeys.
- 32:17Speaker 1: So it's just a different deal. It's funny. How the
- 32:20Speaker 1: expectation of things changes your experienced so much like I
- 32:24Speaker 1: don't hear deer making noises all the time, but I
- 32:27Speaker 1: know there's deer around. But the same to your point,
- 32:29Speaker 1: when I don't hear turkeys and like, godd damn it,
- 32:31Speaker 1: they're just because you go into your elk is the
- 32:34Speaker 1: other one, Like it's just an expectation, dude. I love
- 32:36Speaker 1: walking around the hard woods and looking for scratching and
- 32:39Speaker 1: looking for like, Okay, what's he scratching at? Like what's
- 32:41Speaker 1: what's he getting at here? You know, and looking for
- 32:44Speaker 1: exactly what they're doing. What tree are they under right now?
- 32:45Speaker 1: What are they doing this tree? But why are they
- 32:47Speaker 1: doing this route? Why are they scratching here? This is
- 32:49Speaker 1: where they're comfortable. If they're here scratching, they would have
- 32:52Speaker 1: to be where they're comfortable or where they're you know.
- 32:55Speaker 1: There's always seems to be like these midday hideaways that
- 32:58Speaker 1: these turkeys have. Most turkeys have where they go when there,
- 33:01Speaker 1: they don't want to strut, they're not after a hand.
- 33:04Speaker 1: They kind of just want to be safe and sound.
- 33:07Speaker 1: So it seems like I've seen that with turkeys all
- 33:08Speaker 1: over the country that they kind of act like that. So,
- 33:10Speaker 1: speaking of these other things that you're seeing all across
- 33:12Speaker 1: the country, you guys have hunted some more diverse places
- 33:14Speaker 1: for turkeys than I have. Um, you're talking about roosting
- 33:17Speaker 1: locations and how when do might affect roosting locations you
- 33:21Speaker 1: have always obviously there's like your kind of generic big
- 33:24Speaker 1: kind of horizontal, big roosting type branches on certain trees
- 33:27Speaker 1: that you tend to think of that will be a
- 33:28Speaker 1: great roosting spot. I've also heard sometimes that turkeys will
- 33:32Speaker 1: like to roost overstanding water, where they can be overstanding
- 33:35Speaker 1: water but then then fly down to something dry relatively nearby. Um,
- 33:40Speaker 1: have you guys seen any other typical kind of If
- 33:43Speaker 1: I see that, I'm thinking that could be a good
- 33:44Speaker 1: roosting spot. Um, that stands out that you look for
- 33:48Speaker 1: keyan on so called the good ones mark. I was
- 33:50Speaker 1: gonna say over water. Well, you know what I wonder
- 33:52Speaker 1: about the over water thing is that because in some
- 33:55Speaker 1: places the only the best place to fly off will
- 33:58Speaker 1: be around where there's a low spot of stay any water. Yeah,
- 34:00Speaker 1: I mean it seems yeah, I mean it's not they
- 34:03Speaker 1: don't like looking down at fish. I mean they do
- 34:05Speaker 1: it because they have a fly off spot. Yeah, but
- 34:07Speaker 1: I also think it's there's a safety I heard too,
- 34:09Speaker 1: like the predator can approach from only one one side,
- 34:13Speaker 1: you would think, right without making a bunch of noise.
- 34:15Speaker 1: I don't know that's that's probably not as prevalenced what
- 34:17Speaker 1: you're talking about, but it could be. But I've seen,
- 34:19Speaker 1: you know, I've watched birds. I mean we had were
- 34:21Speaker 1: there in Mexico and those birds were flying a hundred
- 34:24Speaker 1: feet in the air. I didn't get to see it,
- 34:25Speaker 1: but you guys are talking about it. I mean they
- 34:26Speaker 1: just they flew off plane cliff. So we were me
- 34:30Speaker 1: and our media to CEO Kevin Slim. We're sitting down
- 34:33Speaker 1: waiting for Steve and you were with him. Steven, Mark
- 34:36Speaker 1: and Cal are coming off this ridge. We're gonna all
- 34:39Speaker 1: meet up and go to a different spot chase CU's deer.
- 34:42Speaker 1: And we looked up in the air. Got a video
- 34:43Speaker 1: of It's not very good because they're so high up
- 34:45Speaker 1: in the air. We looked up in the air like,
- 34:47Speaker 1: what's that like, buzzers, what's what's I mean, I'm talking
- 34:50Speaker 1: a hundred feet in the air. I mean it was high.
- 34:53Speaker 1: There's these turkeys who must have flown off of how
- 34:57Speaker 1: one of these high ridges and we're soaring in the
- 34:59Speaker 1: wind like like they were, and in a flock like
- 35:02Speaker 1: almost in a flying v just soaring in the wind.
- 35:05Speaker 1: And they landed on this ridge and they just watched
- 35:07Speaker 1: them walk up like normal. I've never seen like that
- 35:10Speaker 1: in my light wild and they were I mean gliding,
- 35:13Speaker 1: I mean floating in the air, not as you normally
- 35:15Speaker 1: see them dropping at a fast pace like they were
- 35:17Speaker 1: just making their way over to that ridge. And I've
- 35:20Speaker 1: never seen anything like it. Why usually envision turkeys, you know,
- 35:23Speaker 1: just like they were thrown off a cliff and they're
- 35:25Speaker 1: just kind of stumbling through the air. But I said, yeah,
- 35:28Speaker 1: that's what turkeys. They're just I feel like turkeys sometimes
- 35:30Speaker 1: aren't that hard to figure out, you know. They they
- 35:33Speaker 1: fly with the wind their backs, like they like the
- 35:35Speaker 1: places where they're not in the wind right when they roust.
- 35:38Speaker 1: You think they come off the tree with the wind
- 35:40Speaker 1: to their back. No, they fly up to the roost
- 35:42Speaker 1: A lot of times the wind they're back. So I've
- 35:44Speaker 1: seen them like posture on a ridge and like wait
- 35:46Speaker 1: till the winds right go up and fly in. I've
- 35:49Speaker 1: seen that, um so I've seen a lot of things,
- 35:52Speaker 1: but seen him. They like Tony was saying earlier, they
- 35:56Speaker 1: like to be out of the wind. They like to
- 35:58Speaker 1: be out of the elements. So if they can get
- 36:00Speaker 1: in a big tree branch and in a tall oak
- 36:02Speaker 1: or something with a big canopy, they like that. Like
- 36:05Speaker 1: they like to be at to have a ridge at
- 36:07Speaker 1: the to block the wind. Sometimes they like to be
- 36:10Speaker 1: in a place where the sun first hits um. You
- 36:13Speaker 1: know like that. You know, you know what I think is,
- 36:16Speaker 1: you know, we keep talking about or you keep talking about,
- 36:19Speaker 1: they're the pattern or their behavior that we're just not
- 36:21Speaker 1: paying attention to. If you start hunting them in the fall,
- 36:24Speaker 1: when you take the breeding instinct out and it's just
- 36:26Speaker 1: survival food and you know, Lazarins repeat, you see how
- 36:33Speaker 1: patternable turkeys are, and it's it's incredible what they're you know,
- 36:37Speaker 1: the scratching you're talking about scouting. If you find a
- 36:39Speaker 1: place they like to go eat today at ten o'clock
- 36:41Speaker 1: in the morning, they go there tomorrow. And the only
- 36:44Speaker 1: difference in the spring is that they get the breeding thing,
- 36:47Speaker 1: that randomness, and so it's like elk. When you talk
- 36:49Speaker 1: to somebody who's consistent on elk. You know, you have
- 36:52Speaker 1: that X factor, right, But for the most part, to
- 36:56Speaker 1: to hedge their bets, they're like, Okay, what do they
- 36:58Speaker 1: need now? Is it sanctuary? Is it food? It as
- 37:00Speaker 1: the water? Is it what? What's everything they need? And
- 37:02Speaker 1: then you just throw that X factor in. Turkeys are
- 37:05Speaker 1: the same. We just don't give them as much credit,
- 37:07Speaker 1: but it's the same thing going on out there. And
- 37:08Speaker 1: Sam soul old Head probably the best description for turkeys
- 37:11Speaker 1: I've ever heard. He said that they are rumbas with feathers,
- 37:14Speaker 1: because like they get out there and they're like gold
- 37:17Speaker 1: at a ways and they hit a fence and they're
- 37:18Speaker 1: like just turn around, and then they go somewhere else
- 37:21Speaker 1: and they hit like a creek that they don't want
- 37:24Speaker 1: to fly over, so then they go another direction. So
- 37:26Speaker 1: like turkeys, yeah, they're they're patternable to an extent, but
- 37:30Speaker 1: like in the woods, it just seems so random. They
- 37:32Speaker 1: look lost. It's not random, it's not man well, sometimes
- 37:36Speaker 1: it seems that way. But that's why as turkey hunters
- 37:38Speaker 1: you feel really good. I call it a bird in
- 37:40Speaker 1: South Dakota over a freaking river and we I was
- 37:43Speaker 1: just calling to him just to see what he would do.
- 37:46Speaker 1: I was not thinking, he's not gonna fly over that
- 37:47Speaker 1: to come over here, and he did, and the dude
- 37:50Speaker 1: I was with shot him and I was like, wow,
- 37:53Speaker 1: that means does that mean I'm good? He's willing to
- 37:55Speaker 1: do that? Just but you could have another bird and
- 37:57Speaker 1: you could call just the same notes and he's not
- 38:00Speaker 1: even interesting, you know. So it's just that's the great
- 38:02Speaker 1: thing about turkeys, Like one is gonna act totally different
- 38:06Speaker 1: than the other, and like then those interactions are patternable, right,
- 38:11Speaker 1: But every once in a while you get a bird,
- 38:13Speaker 1: it's like, what's he doing? He wouldn't be doing that?
- 38:16Speaker 1: He how was he drunk? And you would ask about
- 38:19Speaker 1: like like if you could identify a tree, you would
- 38:22Speaker 1: be good roosting just by looking at it. And that'd
- 38:23Speaker 1: be tough without seeing a bunch of sign around it,
- 38:25Speaker 1: Like the turkey crap is an obvious one, and I
- 38:28Speaker 1: think it's like j turkey crap is uh male and
- 38:33Speaker 1: just like piles of it as a female or whatever.
- 38:35Speaker 1: That's one thing you can look for. And if turkeys
- 38:37Speaker 1: use that area often there will be so much sign
- 38:39Speaker 1: that you cannot possibly miss it, Like there'll be feathers,
- 38:42Speaker 1: uh they'll be you know, areas where they were scratching
- 38:44Speaker 1: or dusting and stuff like that. So and I come
- 38:48Speaker 1: from South Dakota where there's a lot of fractured habitat
- 38:51Speaker 1: um And what I'm getting at is you could look
- 38:54Speaker 1: at aerial topography or you could drive by a property
- 38:57Speaker 1: from miles away and look at and be like that
- 38:59Speaker 1: has You're in it for sure, no doubt about it.
- 39:01Speaker 1: There's white tail that lived there. But that's not always
- 39:03Speaker 1: a case with turkeys. It would be challenging in a
- 39:06Speaker 1: lot of Midwestern states where there's like the fractured habitat
- 39:09Speaker 1: to know that every draw or whatever is going to
- 39:12Speaker 1: have turkeys just because it looks good. So so what
- 39:15Speaker 1: I'm saying is a lot of times you have to
- 39:17Speaker 1: see them there or something, or see the overwhelming them
- 39:21Speaker 1: on a sign to know that there's turkeys in that area. Yeah,
- 39:23Speaker 1: there's some places, like I've seen it in Florida with
- 39:27Speaker 1: less in Florida, but in Texas for sure. Like Tony
- 39:30Speaker 1: was saying, there's like a roost trip and you're like, oh, well,
- 39:34Speaker 1: that's awesome, that's great. That's my favorite. Although it's my
- 39:37Speaker 1: favorite and my least favorite because it's only if you're hunting.
- 39:40Speaker 1: It's good. If there's other hunters around, it's like they're
- 39:43Speaker 1: all I definitely have seen, like in a handful of
- 39:46Speaker 1: places that I have like consistently hunted year after year,
- 39:48Speaker 1: that there certainly are like consistent locations, Like I always
- 39:51Speaker 1: know there's a chance that we're going to hear birds
- 39:54Speaker 1: roosted in that little pocket, and if they're not there,
- 39:57Speaker 1: they're probably gonna be over this swamp right there, And
- 40:00Speaker 1: like I've always wondered and tried to start identifying why,
- 40:03Speaker 1: what's the why around that? But sometimes they did a
- 40:05Speaker 1: little wonky. Well, let's say it's good to think about
- 40:09Speaker 1: different turkeys in different places and try to, like, is
- 40:11Speaker 1: there similarities I've seen, like slews almost always seem to
- 40:14Speaker 1: have slews a big overhanging branches. Some for some reason
- 40:18Speaker 1: it seemed to always have turkeys. I've seen that in Louisiana,
- 40:20Speaker 1: I've seen it in Texas places like that. Are there
- 40:22Speaker 1: any speaking of that kind of regional peculiarities, Have you
- 40:27Speaker 1: guys seen any really stand out differences in behavior or
- 40:33Speaker 1: even necessary tactics that you guys have found from one
- 40:35Speaker 1: region to another, Like does something stand out like, oh gosh,
- 40:38Speaker 1: if you're hunting in the South for turkeys, you really
- 40:41Speaker 1: gotta do x or they seem to be so different
- 40:43Speaker 1: in why way? Is there anything that stands out from
- 40:46Speaker 1: your experiences? The turkey purists will say that like Easterns
- 40:49Speaker 1: are the hardest to kill, They're the hardest to talk
- 40:51Speaker 1: to you, uh, the hardest to a fool. But I
- 40:55Speaker 1: don't think that's the case. South Dakota has Easterns, Riels,
- 40:57Speaker 1: and miriam So I've hunted all three. I've killed all three.
- 41:00Speaker 1: I think there's way more dependent on like the topography
- 41:03Speaker 1: and the amount of pressure that they have, the amount
- 41:05Speaker 1: of turkeys around. All those kinds of things I think
- 41:08Speaker 1: are much more important than if you are in Ohio
- 41:12Speaker 1: or Wyoming, or what subspecies of turkey it is, you
- 41:17Speaker 1: know what I think about that. So when people say
- 41:20Speaker 1: Eastern birds, we think of the subspecies, but I think
- 41:23Speaker 1: we're conflating the subspecies with the region. And I think
- 41:26Speaker 1: the reason that people say that so much is because
- 41:29Speaker 1: there's just been you know, just like down South in
- 41:32Speaker 1: some places, there's been turkey hunting going on a lot longer.
- 41:34Speaker 1: So if you go hunt a place that turkeys haven't
- 41:36Speaker 1: been hunted, they're stupid, they're just easy, and you get
- 41:39Speaker 1: that accumulated pressure, and you get more people who have
- 41:42Speaker 1: grown up around turkey hunting and done it more. It's
- 41:44Speaker 1: just I think that's what people are generally referring to.
- 41:49Speaker 1: But then when you say that, then everybody's like, oh,
- 41:51Speaker 1: the Easterns are the hardest to kill, and it's like, well,
- 41:53Speaker 1: go hunt some Miriams have been pounded on for six weeks,
- 41:55Speaker 1: like they're not easier rios or it doesn't matter. And
- 41:58Speaker 1: so I think, at least in my experience, I think
- 42:01Speaker 1: it's just pressure, not only like pressure from this year,
- 42:04Speaker 1: but the pressure from the last four decades on general population. Yeah,
- 42:08Speaker 1: I had I had that point too. I thought I
- 42:09Speaker 1: was really excited to say it. Thanks for I had
- 42:13Speaker 1: build up in my mind like wait till I say this,
- 42:14Speaker 1: these guys are gonna be shocked, And that was exactly
- 42:17Speaker 1: my point. No, I I agree. I've seen Eastern birds
- 42:22Speaker 1: be easier than could possibly be the subspecies I've seen,
- 42:27Speaker 1: like I've had a lot of really dumb Merriam experiences,
- 42:29Speaker 1: and I just feel like that's not because that they
- 42:31Speaker 1: have white tips, that's because they live in a place
- 42:34Speaker 1: where not a lot of people turkcount if you go
- 42:36Speaker 1: to the South, I've had more trouble killing birds in
- 42:38Speaker 1: the South than anywhere that I've hunted. And I believe
- 42:41Speaker 1: it's because there's more people hunting them. And then it's
- 42:44Speaker 1: not because those Eastern birds down there are you know,
- 42:47Speaker 1: I've seen I've seen Eastern birds in places where they're
- 42:50Speaker 1: not hunted do some really stupid things. And I've seen
- 42:53Speaker 1: a lot of Miriam's an open country just walking the plagure,
- 42:55Speaker 1: like what are you doing? Man, Like why are you
- 42:57Speaker 1: going over there? And they just don't. That's where you
- 43:00Speaker 1: get like the puffed up room thing. But I think
- 43:02Speaker 1: when they're they're stressed and their pressure, they become different
- 43:07Speaker 1: like any animal, right, Yeah, you know what the best
- 43:09Speaker 1: part about any subspecies that you're gonna hunt is there's
- 43:12Speaker 1: Jake's and every one of them. Yeah, so it doesn't matter.
- 43:17Speaker 1: That's about like regional things too. And one thing I've
- 43:22Speaker 1: noticed in South Dakota there's not a lot of bobcats.
- 43:24Speaker 1: They're they're pretty rare. If you like, a lot of
- 43:26Speaker 1: guys who hunt their whole lives in that area rarely
- 43:30Speaker 1: see one. But the places where guys get trail camp
- 43:33Speaker 1: pictures of them. The place where I've seen them in
- 43:35Speaker 1: person are the absolute best turkey habitat, and there's the
- 43:38Speaker 1: most turkeys. There is the best turkey hunting. And so
- 43:41Speaker 1: I don't know how much you can apply that to
- 43:42Speaker 1: other areas, but I have found in South Dakota, where
- 43:46Speaker 1: there's not very many bobcats that where they are or
- 43:48Speaker 1: where guys are aware of them is also just stellar
- 43:51Speaker 1: turkey hunting. And I'm guessing it's because bobcats nail turkeys,
- 43:55Speaker 1: um eat a lot of them. So there's a reason
- 43:59Speaker 1: for that obviously, because eat have sex with Yes, thank
- 44:03Speaker 1: you for that. So we all needed that clarifications thinking
- 44:08Speaker 1: about the audience here, Yeah, so so, but you're saying one,
- 44:13Speaker 1: one might assume that an opposite relationship might be present
- 44:17Speaker 1: if if bobcats are nailing by nailing, I say, eating
- 44:21Speaker 1: many turkeys, that in that instance you would see lower
- 44:24Speaker 1: turkey populations or your typical predator prey up and down,
- 44:28Speaker 1: up and down, up and down. I can't stop thinking
- 44:29Speaker 1: about it. Can you imagine how violent? And oh my god? Yeah,
- 44:37Speaker 1: that's non consensual, you know, so I can see that
- 44:39Speaker 1: you're going absolutely so anyways, I think there's still a
- 44:42Speaker 1: few bobcats. Like they pick the ideal places where they're
- 44:46Speaker 1: gonna go for the hoops. Yeah, that happens to be
- 44:48Speaker 1: where there are a bunch of turkeys. So, like I said,
- 44:51Speaker 1: I know how much of that you can apply to
- 44:53Speaker 1: other areas, but maybe if you are in an area
- 44:56Speaker 1: that rarely has bobcats seen, or like your state just
- 44:59Speaker 1: has some bobcats. Uh, what I found is that where
- 45:03Speaker 1: they like to hang out is also the best yawning.
- 45:06Speaker 1: So you should go scout bobcats sign for your turkey spots.
- 45:09Speaker 1: Sure if if you have an easier time finding that.
- 45:13Speaker 1: I would love to find someone who would just dedicate
- 45:16Speaker 1: their next turkey season to the Spencer New Heart approach,
- 45:19Speaker 1: like base your entire season around. There are no bobcats
- 45:22Speaker 1: on Florida, some of them no turkeys either either. And
- 45:27Speaker 1: then maybe if if someone really did spend that much
- 45:29Speaker 1: time scouting bobcats, they might actually document the um the
- 45:33Speaker 1: rare but majestic scene of a bobcat nailing a turkey, Like, oh,
- 45:38Speaker 1: bobcats nailing turkeys? See it all the time you need.
- 45:41Speaker 1: As soon as I started hunting bobcats instead of turkey,
- 45:43Speaker 1: that's okay. I want to hit a few more like
- 45:49Speaker 1: key things, almost rapid fire. Um, you talked about this
- 45:53Speaker 1: a little bit already, but the part of the day
- 45:56Speaker 1: you talk about, you're gonna hear more gobbling or early probably,
- 45:58Speaker 1: But then you mentioned many cases that very killable birds,
- 46:01Speaker 1: a late morning bird. You had to pick though, if
- 46:04Speaker 1: I forced you to say, you only pick this our
- 46:07Speaker 1: window or two hour window, this part of the day.
- 46:11Speaker 1: Which part of the day do you pick? Tony tending
- 46:15Speaker 1: noon tendon. He keeps taking all my answers, Mark, what
- 46:19Speaker 1: do we do? I got start sending then first come on. Yeah,
- 46:23Speaker 1: tend to say, yeah, I I like that window, and
- 46:26Speaker 1: that's probably when I've killed my most turkeys. But I
- 46:28Speaker 1: like being there when they're on the roost yet and
- 46:30Speaker 1: just knowing where they're at because I don't have a
- 46:32Speaker 1: ton of patients for turkey hunting, and so if I'm
- 46:34Speaker 1: out there before sunrise and I know there's a bunch
- 46:36Speaker 1: of turkeys in this one draw, that will keep me busy,
- 46:39Speaker 1: I'm satisfied hunting and that killing one, whereas if you're
- 46:42Speaker 1: other midday you're kind of blind. Um, that's a tougher
- 46:46Speaker 1: hunt for me. Yeah, I've definitely experienced what you guys
- 46:49Speaker 1: are talking about. It always seems like there's that lots
- 46:52Speaker 1: of goblin first thing in the morning, and then they
- 46:53Speaker 1: come down and then if they're not coming to you
- 46:55Speaker 1: then and if you can't move, like for example, one
- 46:58Speaker 1: of the properties I hunt a lot, they roost on
- 47:01Speaker 1: the neighbors and they come down unless they come right
- 47:03Speaker 1: to me, which happens like one on ten times. Maybe
- 47:06Speaker 1: then they're gonna take off the apposle direction and I
- 47:08Speaker 1: have to wait like two or three hours, but I
- 47:09Speaker 1: know eventually they'll circle back and buy ten thirties something
- 47:13Speaker 1: will circle back through. Um. So, so while I know
- 47:17Speaker 1: that to be true, and those dudes seem to be
- 47:19Speaker 1: killable birds, there's something about that on the roost first
- 47:23Speaker 1: thing the more like I love that so much. Like
- 47:26Speaker 1: that those that our experience, whether or not you kill
- 47:29Speaker 1: something is is my favorite thing about turkey hunting. I
- 47:31Speaker 1: feel like there's very few other things in hunting then
- 47:33Speaker 1: involved that type of approach though, Like can you imagine
- 47:36Speaker 1: if you're hearing white tails and they were just laying
- 47:38Speaker 1: in the tree like there they are, right, We're gonna
- 47:42Speaker 1: get down, We're gonna get under the tree right near
- 47:44Speaker 1: where he is, and when he jumps down, I'll make
- 47:46Speaker 1: a noise and they'll come on. We'll nail him, and
- 47:48Speaker 1: we'll nail It'll just nail him real good. I just
- 47:52Speaker 1: don't think it's that's very unique to turkey hunting. So
- 47:55Speaker 1: I love it. I love it for that reason because
- 47:57Speaker 1: it is unique. You're not doing that with I think
- 47:59Speaker 1: it's like the verse flush. Yeah, that's kind of but
- 48:06Speaker 1: that that, like that first gobble, the first gobble of
- 48:11Speaker 1: the morning, like that is like a chill inducing moment
- 48:14Speaker 1: every time for me. That hasn't gotten old for me yet.
- 48:16Speaker 1: You're walking out there and you're just waiting and waiting there.
- 48:18Speaker 1: I'd like to make it adendom. I would like to
- 48:20Speaker 1: be out in the Do I get to be out
- 48:21Speaker 1: in the woods at first light and then only hunt
- 48:23Speaker 1: from tender noon? Or do I not? You had to pick?
- 48:26Speaker 1: Do I have to go out at ten? Oh? Man? Yeah,
- 48:31Speaker 1: if that's the case, I'm going out first light. You are, okay,
- 48:34Speaker 1: So it's three to one, you lose, Tony. But I mean,
- 48:36Speaker 1: if I could, if I could go, if I could
- 48:38Speaker 1: go and like wash the turkeys and then only hunting
- 48:41Speaker 1: from tender noon, Like, the most successful time period is
- 48:43Speaker 1: gonna be tending if you want to kill one. You
- 48:45Speaker 1: know why that window is so good because that's when
- 48:47Speaker 1: the bobcats are nappy, they're so tired. There's time off. Man,
- 48:57Speaker 1: this is the best turkey on in podcast we've ever done.
- 49:00Speaker 1: Um okay, ideal decoy set up? What do you run like?
- 49:04Speaker 1: I know there's lots of different variations, but if you
- 49:06Speaker 1: had to pick, like the most tried and sure that's
- 49:08Speaker 1: going to work the most often? What is it? Ben? Sorry,
- 49:12Speaker 1: I gotta give Ben because something really smart And I'll
- 49:15Speaker 1: be like that again. It very much depends on like
- 49:20Speaker 1: the time of year. But if I'm like early season,
- 49:23Speaker 1: it's like the first hit in the ground, I'll probably
- 49:26Speaker 1: just go with a jake and a hand and just
- 49:28Speaker 1: depending on what the top the topography is or what
- 49:32Speaker 1: the field looks like or what the piece of woods
- 49:34Speaker 1: looks like all and then like, how do you like
- 49:36Speaker 1: to position them? Heads up, heads down, angle towards you like?
- 49:39Speaker 1: I want specifics? You want specifics. I've I've done a
- 49:42Speaker 1: lot of different positions. Um, I've done almost done it
- 49:47Speaker 1: and almost a position you keep your composure, I've done
- 49:52Speaker 1: it a lot of positions with a lot of different
- 49:54Speaker 1: variations animals. I'm to have a child, it's mind, um,
- 50:02Speaker 1: it's I've done. I've done the laying down hen and
- 50:05Speaker 1: I had a lot of success with that, with a
- 50:07Speaker 1: jake face and like facing off tours where the birds
- 50:10Speaker 1: are coming from, kind of that challenge I've had a
- 50:13Speaker 1: lot of success with, like I'll do it if I
- 50:15Speaker 1: do it, if I have a fan on, I'll face
- 50:18Speaker 1: the fan away from where I think the turkeys are
- 50:20Speaker 1: gonna come from, because like a lot of times, and
- 50:23Speaker 1: then I'll try to make sure as the wind blows,
- 50:24Speaker 1: if I got a thing that will move that it'll
- 50:27Speaker 1: turn to the way where they can see the profile
- 50:28Speaker 1: of the turkey's face. I think it's like subordinate birds
- 50:32Speaker 1: will oftentimes turn away from a gobbler and kind of
- 50:35Speaker 1: show them their side. So I try to do that sometimes,
- 50:38Speaker 1: but it's such so many ways to approach it. But Spencer, Yeah,
- 50:41Speaker 1: I think the safest bed it's just a single hen
- 50:44Speaker 1: or a hen into jake. But more often than not,
- 50:47Speaker 1: I run a single hend that's facing me the way
- 50:51Speaker 1: for Tom sees it comes in. Tom wants to be
- 50:53Speaker 1: facing the hen and they can't see me drawing my
- 50:56Speaker 1: bow or bringing up my shotgun whatever that is, and
- 50:59Speaker 1: hens doing what general standing up? Yes, well, and I
- 51:03Speaker 1: use a decoy that it's hard to um have variety with.
- 51:08Speaker 1: I use the Montana decoy because I like to like
- 51:11Speaker 1: throw to my backpack and go in somewhere not be
- 51:14Speaker 1: sure where I've set up. So with that it's pretty
- 51:16Speaker 1: much always just standing up, um and head up. I
- 51:20Speaker 1: think the one that I use the most is like
- 51:23Speaker 1: a hen feeding head down and then a jake behind
- 51:26Speaker 1: her head up. Um has been but then I've also
- 51:29Speaker 1: ran kind of like you said, Ben, with a full
- 51:32Speaker 1: struck gobbler. And I like to face the fan tours
- 51:35Speaker 1: where I think they're to come from, not because for
- 51:38Speaker 1: the reasons you describe, but just because I feel it's
- 51:40Speaker 1: more noticeable, Like I just wanted to see that big
- 51:42Speaker 1: fan and like catch their attention with it. Um. That's
- 51:44Speaker 1: a big part of point though too, that's a big
- 51:46Speaker 1: part of it. But any like you're just thinking of
- 51:48Speaker 1: I want that goblet or to be thinking that's a subordinate. Yeah,
- 51:51Speaker 1: that's interesting because especially if he's with a with with
- 51:53Speaker 1: another because I've had a lot of I've had a
- 51:56Speaker 1: lot of times, like Spencer said, where I just wish
- 51:58Speaker 1: I had a hen out there. I get out there,
- 52:00Speaker 1: this bird comes in, he just locks up, like I
- 52:02Speaker 1: don't want to know if I'm into that right now.
- 52:04Speaker 1: I don't want to fight. And so there's a lot
- 52:06Speaker 1: of times I wish I just ran There's I would
- 52:08Speaker 1: say that most times I think that my decoys have
- 52:10Speaker 1: screwed up my setup is when I wish I just
- 52:12Speaker 1: had a hand, I had a strutter out or something
- 52:14Speaker 1: like that, or even a jake sometimes did uh did
- 52:17Speaker 1: Ben take your ideas? So I I think I think
- 52:22Speaker 1: from more from a bull hunting perspective, and I think
- 52:25Speaker 1: you can do I think you can get away with
- 52:27Speaker 1: different stuff if you're only shotgun hunting. But for me,
- 52:30Speaker 1: the early season stuff starts with as many decoys I
- 52:32Speaker 1: want to carry, usually that's four, and it will be
- 52:34Speaker 1: a quarters strut, jake over, a laid down hand, and
- 52:37Speaker 1: then probably a feeding hand and upright, always kind of
- 52:41Speaker 1: working in the same direction. You know, you think about
- 52:43Speaker 1: turkeys when you watch them, they're kind of always moving
- 52:45Speaker 1: in the same direction. You see people put them out
- 52:48Speaker 1: face and it just looks unnatural. And so I'm thinking,
- 52:51Speaker 1: if I'm in the morning, I'm like, Okay, they're coming
- 52:53Speaker 1: out of the woods, probably if I'm in a field
- 52:54Speaker 1: edge or something, so they're all going one way, or
- 52:57Speaker 1: in the evening I might reverse it. I don't know
- 52:58Speaker 1: if that matters, but I use I use David Smith's
- 53:03Speaker 1: and throughout the season, I'll pay it down, so I'll
- 53:05Speaker 1: eventually go to just the Jake decoy and the lay
- 53:09Speaker 1: down hand, hopefully in some place where she's visible, you know.
- 53:13Speaker 1: And so so why are you paying it down at
- 53:15Speaker 1: that point, because I've had like you're talking about birds
- 53:19Speaker 1: flaring or you know where you just wish you had
- 53:21Speaker 1: that single hand. I don't know why this is, but
- 53:25Speaker 1: I have better luck with more decoys early and throughout
- 53:28Speaker 1: the season as I and I end up pairing down,
- 53:30Speaker 1: if it's by about May tenth, I'm down to a
- 53:32Speaker 1: single hand. I don't like that Jake anymore. They're not
- 53:34Speaker 1: fighting as much. There's no pecking order thing going on,
- 53:37Speaker 1: and so it just seems I seem to get more
- 53:39Speaker 1: effective early with a lot of decoys and later with fewer,
- 53:43Speaker 1: and in in certain situations, I don't use a strutter
- 53:46Speaker 1: a lot, but if I've been able to scout and
- 53:49Speaker 1: I've seen that bird that has a bunch of hands
- 53:51Speaker 1: with him and he's a stud. If you can figure
- 53:53Speaker 1: out where that bird likes to be and put out
- 53:54Speaker 1: a strutter, he'll come. And so that's a situational thing.
- 53:58Speaker 1: But that's not something I use season long. That's like
- 54:00Speaker 1: April early April, and so it just it just depends.
- 54:03Speaker 1: But I like as a bow hunter, I like really
- 54:07Speaker 1: realistic decoys. Then get away of changes. If I'm shotgun hunting,
- 54:11Speaker 1: I think you should get into like having confidence decoys,
- 54:14Speaker 1: like start bringing a dull white tail with you and
- 54:17Speaker 1: put up, you know, an m or like a heron
- 54:19Speaker 1: or something like that, the water follow approach. I've actually
- 54:23Speaker 1: put turkey decoys. I know, what's up with him today?
- 54:28Speaker 1: What would you say? A blue heron? Yeah? You here,
- 54:32Speaker 1: bends over next to me, texted Ronella, like, man, you
- 54:34Speaker 1: screwed up on this. His turkey hunting strategies bizarre. Here's
- 54:40Speaker 1: what I do. I get a blue heron once I
- 54:43Speaker 1: figure out the bobcat density of a region, a commission
- 54:50Speaker 1: of blue hair. Here's what I like to do. I've
- 54:55Speaker 1: determined there are a lot of bobcats around, So what
- 54:57Speaker 1: the first thing I do is, So, did you have
- 55:00Speaker 1: anything else? I was just before Spencer derailed us with
- 55:04Speaker 1: heron No, I'll let it go. But yeah, so they're
- 55:08Speaker 1: all confidence equation. Now I'm picturing I'm picturing him and
- 55:11Speaker 1: like going out through a field of blue heron legs
- 55:13Speaker 1: and sticking out of cannot wait. I can't wait for
- 55:19Speaker 1: the south to go down. That's gonna be so. So
- 55:22Speaker 1: then let's hear what your bizarre calling strategies, Like, what's
- 55:24Speaker 1: your calling strategy first in the morning on the roofst
- 55:27Speaker 1: how's it transition during that late morning period we talked about?
- 55:30Speaker 1: And then do you call in the evenings? Uh? So
- 55:34Speaker 1: we're run out of time, so I'm just gonna make
- 55:35Speaker 1: it quick. But like I try to not overcall. I
- 55:38Speaker 1: think that's a mistake you can make. Um. And that's
- 55:41Speaker 1: what I did early in turgey hunting. Um. And as
- 55:44Speaker 1: I become a more successful turkey hunter, my calling has
- 55:48Speaker 1: gotten less ben Yeah, I mean I would agree with
- 55:52Speaker 1: that as far as like times of the day I
- 55:53Speaker 1: keep going back to. It's hard to answer that, just
- 55:55Speaker 1: just to know, like I try to stay real silent
- 55:59Speaker 1: off the roost, like I like to let them zero calling,
- 56:02Speaker 1: not zero, but I like to really read them off
- 56:04Speaker 1: the roost if they're if they're just lightening up on
- 56:07Speaker 1: the roost. A lot of birds will light it up
- 56:08Speaker 1: in the rust, but a lot of birds that have
- 56:10Speaker 1: a lot of predators around will light it up on
- 56:12Speaker 1: the roost and fly down and shut the f up,
- 56:15Speaker 1: you know. So, so I like to be quiet for
- 56:17Speaker 1: that reason around roost time, let him fly off, kind
- 56:20Speaker 1: of read them a little bit, what are they gonna do,
- 56:22Speaker 1: and try to be more responsive in that way. During
- 56:25Speaker 1: the midday, I'm gonna like let it fly a little
- 56:27Speaker 1: bit harder, try to get somebody's attention, and the same
- 56:30Speaker 1: thing kind of in the In the evening, I'm gonna
- 56:32Speaker 1: hopefully be in a spot where I know they're kind
- 56:34Speaker 1: of coming to me, so I'm gonna let them be
- 56:36Speaker 1: a little vocal before I get fired up. But I mean,
- 56:38Speaker 1: it just really depends, you know. Yeah, I feel like
- 56:40Speaker 1: I've always thought cut to your point. I was just
- 56:43Speaker 1: like you, Spencer. Early on, I used to call call
- 56:45Speaker 1: Call every time the gaveled, I want to call back,
- 56:47Speaker 1: and it was so much fun um. But then I realized, yeah,
- 56:50Speaker 1: oftentimes the best, the most effective call was sometimes the
- 56:55Speaker 1: playing hard to get no call, so you let him
- 56:57Speaker 1: when you're there, but then you you pull back and
- 57:00Speaker 1: they're thinking no, like they should be coming to me.
- 57:01Speaker 1: They should be coming to me, and I should be
- 57:03Speaker 1: hearing them. And then that doesn't happen, and the gablers like,
- 57:05Speaker 1: what the hell, I gotta go figure out where she
- 57:07Speaker 1: want And then sometimes you get the half hour later
- 57:10Speaker 1: you come strolling in. So I've always kind of taken
- 57:12Speaker 1: the approach that I find him on the roost. I
- 57:14Speaker 1: like to try to just at least no make enough
- 57:17Speaker 1: noise to know that they know him there, so I
- 57:19Speaker 1: want to I'll help you help, and then I get
- 57:21Speaker 1: a responsible Okay, he knows him here, Now I'm gonna stop.
- 57:24Speaker 1: And then I usually play just like you did, and
- 57:27Speaker 1: then the same deal late morning, then try to get
- 57:29Speaker 1: something attention. A lot of times I'll get up and
- 57:31Speaker 1: just start roaming at that point to trying to strike
- 57:33Speaker 1: one up or here, one of the distance and make
- 57:34Speaker 1: a move on it. The evenings I struggle with like
- 57:37Speaker 1: just because they're not talking by me, at least very
- 57:39Speaker 1: little talking. And then to your point, I've always tried
- 57:42Speaker 1: to just hopefully kind of know where they're headed, get
- 57:44Speaker 1: in between their roam around, make noise hopefully something strikes up.
- 57:48Speaker 1: But I don't know, Tony, I feel like you're the liar. Well,
- 57:52Speaker 1: tell tell us what we're doing wrong. I'm I'm a
- 57:54Speaker 1: caller man. I you know, the thing about the early
- 57:58Speaker 1: part of the day is you're you're almost always talking
- 58:00Speaker 1: to somebody and so you're you're just gauging the conversation
- 58:03Speaker 1: on how he's responding. And it's easy if they're if
- 58:06Speaker 1: they're on the roost, they're going to respond a lot,
- 58:08Speaker 1: and so it doesn't You could call a lot and
- 58:11Speaker 1: get in response, but it's not doing any good. You're
- 58:12Speaker 1: you're taking that temperature the rest of the day after
- 58:15Speaker 1: you get like that like nine o'clock lull or whatever.
- 58:18Speaker 1: I'm a caller man, and part of it is because
- 58:20Speaker 1: I'm trying to get hens piste off, and so we're
- 58:24Speaker 1: always like, oh, I gotta get that gird, that gobbler
- 58:26Speaker 1: to go. But a lot of times, you know, if
- 58:28Speaker 1: they're traveling with that little flock of hens or something,
- 58:30Speaker 1: that there'll be one dominant hen in there, and I'm
- 58:33Speaker 1: trying to like I'm cutting to her hard and going
- 58:36Speaker 1: a couple of different calls at a time, usually a
- 58:38Speaker 1: mouth call in a like Slate calls a lot, and
- 58:41Speaker 1: I can cut, just cut and yelp and yelp and yelp.
- 58:44Speaker 1: And this this came from my fall hunting, where the
- 58:46Speaker 1: conventional wisdom is, hey, be super quiet, be cautious, and
- 58:50Speaker 1: to get him. I kind of think a lot of
- 58:52Speaker 1: times like they need some encouragement. And if you're good
- 58:55Speaker 1: at it, where they're like, there's something going on I
- 58:57Speaker 1: don't want to miss. Or if you can get that
- 58:59Speaker 1: Hen where she's like I don't want this this chick
- 59:01Speaker 1: talk and smack to me, you can get them to
- 59:03Speaker 1: swing closer. And if the Hens comes seventy five yards
- 59:05Speaker 1: that Tom might come right in. And so I don't
- 59:08Speaker 1: I'm not real shy. Yeah I'm. Everybody says, well, I'm
- 59:12Speaker 1: either I'm called shy or I just let it rip.
- 59:15Speaker 1: I mean, I'm I've been with a lot of guys
- 59:16Speaker 1: that just sit in a blind with him. You're like,
- 59:18Speaker 1: let's go, man, let's go. You can't this bird is
- 59:21Speaker 1: fired up, like he's coming, Let's give him a show
- 59:24Speaker 1: like let's And I've been other guys like shut the
- 59:27Speaker 1: funk up there like it not. What I do is
- 59:31Speaker 1: I call every five minutes. Yeah, yeah, we get it,
- 59:33Speaker 1: like just like all real like all real thork is
- 59:37Speaker 1: just an every five minutes. So I it's hard to
- 59:41Speaker 1: know kind of what the right thing to do is.
- 59:43Speaker 1: But I've I've I've had the most successes personally reading
- 59:46Speaker 1: the bird first. Right, So if I'm on a bird
- 59:49Speaker 1: and he's on the roosts and he's hammering, and the
- 59:51Speaker 1: hens fly down first, and he waits to fly down,
- 59:54Speaker 1: and he doesn't immediately strut like he just kind of
- 59:56Speaker 1: follows to them into the timber or something like, okay,
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: but if he flies down first and hits the strut,
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: then it's on. So that I'm going, I'm going to work,
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: but it just it starts that way. But in the like,
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: if you're in the middle of the day, you just
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: like be loud, to be proud something like you know
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: you mentioned evening, same thing. What do you got to
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: lose if you if you have birds that aren't vocal,
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: you can you can kill birds in the evening. They're
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: gonna be traveling, that's the thing, so they might not
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: be sounded off, but they got a destination in mind.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: You can if you if you get after him a
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: lot of times you can get them to go yeah, yeah,
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: did you sit? Yeah? I like to sit on that
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: path right just kind of get know that man, they
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: roosed here a lot, even if they're not being real
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: vocal right now, like I'm gonna get in between where
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: I know I think they're headed and just stay silent,
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: but be a little bit more vocal and just you know,
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: seem desperate, seem you know, it seems like you got
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: something real to say to to the birds. All Right,
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: I gotta leave at the airport. Um so we're gonna
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: wrap this up real fast, but I want to I
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: want to end with two final like rapid fire things.
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: First off, Ben, turkey vestor no turkey best turkey vest
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: Turkey vestor turkey no turkey backpack, Spencer backpack absolutely no
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: turkey vest. It's like the pencil protector of the turkey.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: Ye Like, look at that, Neube. I love my turkey best.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: I want to hear. I want to hear everyone's turkey yelp.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: Mouth turkey yelp right now, and we'll pick who's got
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: the best natural mouth turkey yelp. Ben, what do you go?
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: I feel like my microphone could be faulty. I don't know.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: Let's see what you got hold on. Now, there's a
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: lot of pressure you guys right on that. Yep, yep, yep.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: Come on, I'm not gonna let you nothing chide me
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: into this. No, nothing, absolutely not really, Tony. I have
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: twin seven year olds. We turkey call all the time. Okay,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: that's a harbor seal. Yeah, I don't. I don't like
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: the eye contact with me. I got word real fast,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: all right, And Spencer, what's your best bob cat call?
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: That was like Mark Wins. That was good Mark two
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: years again. Mark, let's go a little he's looking at
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: me now as he looking like it's weird. You don't
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: need a turkey vest because you don't even need a call.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: So there you go. That's why you stupped using him.
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: I did. I was not aware that the turkey vest was.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: I love my turkey vest, dude. I've stand by that
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: sucker and we're proud. Do you do you run the
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: turkey vest with the built in butt head? No? No, okay, okay,
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: I wouldn't be against it, though I carried up with
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: a Fannie pack. Yeah. I could see Ben rocket past
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: at the same time, I would if I could, like
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: a little fanny pack. I keep my little scratch pad
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: in the two night to have turkey tour fannie packs.
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: We're in South Dakota where south code. You're gonna hear
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: this like crinkling, sound like what's been he's eating crackers
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: are get out? He likes to say, I have all
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: those calories during turkey. Yeah, No, I love my best.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: What I do is I have my best. It's got
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: all my calls, my shells. I just go into my garage,
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: I get it out of the bin and I'll throw
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: it in the truck and I go. We know how
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: they work. And on that note, let's wrap this up.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: Thanks guys for taking time to talk turkeys. Thanks man,

- 1:03:36Speaker 1: us anytime now, it's a very exciting time of year.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: I can't wait for those first gobbles. I actually just
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: the other day saw some turkeys across the road from
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: my house and took my son on the front porch
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: and tried doing some yelping at him and stuff, and
