- 0:19Speaker 1: Guns Smoke Gun Moves spoil starring William Conrad. The story
- 0:42Speaker 1: of the violence that moved lest for the young America
- 0:45Speaker 1: and the story of a man who moved with it.
- 0:48Speaker 1: I'm that man, Matt Dillon, United States Marshall, the first
- 0:52Speaker 1: man they look for and the last they want to meet.
- 0:56Speaker 1: It's a chancy job and it makes a man watchful
- 1:01Speaker 1: and a little lonely.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Mister Dunn, would you mind as we stop at the
- 1:19Speaker 2: Long Bank here for a minute?
- 1:20Speaker 1: I study earlier in the day? Is Manchester? Oh, I
- 1:23Speaker 1: don't want no drink?
- 1:25Speaker 2: Barking told me some money for me. I want a
- 1:28Speaker 2: little last night and I didn't want to put it
- 1:29Speaker 2: back into the game.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Do you want to get a no so you can
- 1:31Speaker 1: put it back tonight? Is that yes? Sam?
- 1:35Speaker 2: Fraid?
- 1:36Speaker 1: Okay? Sam? Come for your money?
- 1:43Speaker 3: Chester?
- 1:44Speaker 4: Oh there, Marshall, Goillon.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Hi Sam? Well here you are Chester? Here, you buy
- 1:54Speaker 1: yourself a drink? Sure we'll see you're not Chester. You're
- 2:00Speaker 1: uh excuse me?
- 2:02Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 2:04Speaker 6: Well, I heard the bartender call you, Marshall. Dylon Ah, Sir,
- 2:09Speaker 6: I got something to tell you, Marshall.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I'll go ahead. It's important. Okay, you're going to die, Marshall.
- 2:22Speaker 6: Who are you, mister Wilburt Hawkins. I'm a whiskey drummer.
- 2:28Speaker 6: First time I've been to Dodge, though I worked around
- 2:30Speaker 6: Saint Louis till they sent me out here. I liked
- 2:33Speaker 6: it better in Saint Louis. Lots of important people there.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Wait a minute, what are you talking about?
- 2:40Speaker 6: You're going to die, Marshall. I heard them saying so.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I heard who's saying so.
- 2:46Speaker 6: I don't know their names. It was dark and they
- 2:48Speaker 6: weren't there very long. I didn't dare say anything, or
- 2:52Speaker 6: they didn't known I was listening. And of course I
- 2:55Speaker 6: never heard of you till just now.
- 2:58Speaker 1: That is.
- 2:58Speaker 6: You ain't a making much sense, mister, Oh, it makes
- 3:02Speaker 6: sense all right.
- 3:03Speaker 1: You see.
- 3:04Speaker 6: I rode the train out here from Saint Louian one night.
- 3:07Speaker 6: I was all wrapped up trying to sleep, and these
- 3:09Speaker 6: two men came by and stood there in the aisle,
- 3:12Speaker 6: and one gave the other three hundred dollars. He said
- 3:15Speaker 6: it was to kill Marshall divon, but he didn't say where,
- 3:19Speaker 6: so of course I didn't know it will just now?
- 3:21Speaker 6: Is that all you know about it?
- 3:23Speaker 1: That's all, Marshall.
- 3:25Speaker 6: I've done my duty Now I'll be going good bye.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Oh ever more, what do you make of that?
- 3:38Speaker 1: I don't know Chester?
- 3:39Speaker 2: He acts it crazy like I don't know whether to
- 3:41Speaker 2: belied him or not.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And I suppose we'll find out. So enough.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Is, there's sound asleep already, and it ain't only just
- 4:02Speaker 2: got darker.
- 4:04Speaker 1: All he's got nothing else to do with Tom Smith
- 4:06Speaker 1: gets here? Was that who you're holding him for? Oh?
- 4:10Speaker 1: I thought I told you that Chester?
- 4:12Speaker 2: Well, but Tom's mis cheff a tescos.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Ain't Yeah, why Well?
- 4:16Speaker 2: I thought this follows one in.
- 4:18Speaker 1: A no Chester. They never heard of him in Apoline.
- 4:21Speaker 1: That's why I wired Tom Well, I'm going out back
- 4:24Speaker 1: for him inn at Chester. I think I left my
- 4:26Speaker 1: new bridle on the hitching rail. Aren't here.
- 4:28Speaker 2: I'm better to get your chase swept up a little
- 4:30Speaker 2: bit that it's.
- 4:30Speaker 5: A good idea.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Stay there, Chester, stay where you are. You've been shot.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I was just trying to play foss on Chester. I
- 4:55Speaker 1: wanted to get him to come up where I could
- 4:57Speaker 1: see him. Thought he's gone. Now you're scared. My way
- 5:00Speaker 1: ran down the alley there. You'll be lost in the crowd.
- 5:04Speaker 1: But no thought I got sire, it doesn't matter. Probably
- 5:08Speaker 1: thinks I'm dead, So I'll just go on playing tussle.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I mean, that's going up the darts office. I'll tell
- 5:14Speaker 1: you there. Now. I don't know if you're one of
- 5:30Speaker 1: them Civil War bucks or not, but the United States
- 5:33Speaker 1: Post Office put out a series of mighty interest in
- 5:36Speaker 1: postage stamps when the centennial of that big shoot rolled
- 5:40Speaker 1: around a few years back. I'll show it to you now,
- 5:48Speaker 1: like this one in my album here, he issued May fifth,
- 5:52Speaker 1: nineteen hundred and sixty four, recalling the fracice they fought
- 5:56Speaker 1: near Fredericksburg, Virginia. It's called the bat or the Wilderness. Now,
- 6:02Speaker 1: now that was a real roferint all right, because that's
- 6:05Speaker 1: where General US Grant and one hundred and fifteen thousand
- 6:09Speaker 1: Union troops ran head on in the General Robert E.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Lee and seventy five thousand Confederates. Oh you couldn't hardly
- 6:17Speaker 1: see one another, for the thick trees and the brush
- 6:20Speaker 1: all around, and the cavalry and the artillery wasn't much
- 6:23Speaker 1: good to either side. Buck. They kept at it for
- 6:26Speaker 1: two days in that wilderness, with a lot of good
- 6:29Speaker 1: men down before it was over. But that was to
- 6:33Speaker 1: start the Grant's drive on the Confederate capital at Richmond, Virginia,
- 6:37Speaker 1: which ended the war about a year later. It was
- 6:40Speaker 1: a bitter and bloody war all the way, but it
- 6:44Speaker 1: made this one country again, and that is what really counts.
- 7:01Speaker 6: What did you say that whiskey Drummer's name is man.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Wilbert Hawkins, Doc, but you never heard of him. This
- 7:07Speaker 1: is his first time in Dodge, you know, Doc.
- 7:09Speaker 2: He kind of acts like maybe he got hit by
- 7:11Speaker 2: lightning some worse seem When he's standing still, he gives
- 7:14Speaker 2: you the feeling.
- 7:15Speaker 1: He try to walk in sideway, He kindly ooches.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Along like a crab.
- 7:19Speaker 7: You know what I mean?
- 7:20Speaker 1: No, I don't, but I sure think twice before asking
- 7:23Speaker 1: you to explain, Yester, what is it that you have
- 7:27Speaker 1: in mind to do now? Matt? Nothing? Nothing? Yeah. Trust
- 7:31Speaker 1: is gonna do the work for a while, and I'm
- 7:33Speaker 1: just gonna sit up here in your office and wait,
- 7:35Speaker 1: wait for what I do. When Chusters spreads the word around,
- 7:38Speaker 1: and I'm dad that whoever wants me that way, he's
- 7:41Speaker 1: gonna make his play. He'll come out of the open
- 7:43Speaker 1: and do whatever he's got planned. Man, I'm gonna give
- 7:47Speaker 1: him a little surprise.
- 7:49Speaker 2: I don't think what's going after a wonderful I didn't
- 7:52Speaker 2: out Why didn't I think?
- 7:54Speaker 1: Yeah, God Chester, I'm kind of anxious to meet this man,
- 7:57Speaker 1: him and his gunman.
- 7:58Speaker 2: That's sure. I'm a one thing. Ain't the boy's like
- 8:02Speaker 2: to to run wild on the hear you ain't around
- 8:04Speaker 2: keep the lid.
- 8:05Speaker 1: On things, and they might. They would have to take
- 8:08Speaker 1: a chance. I'll get started, you know. I'm at just
- 8:17Speaker 1: as rightful ones. There's a lot of men and dodge
- 8:20Speaker 1: who are just waiting for an excuse like this. Well,
- 8:22Speaker 1: if it gets too bad, doctor, I'll just have to
- 8:25Speaker 1: come to life again. What time is it getting to
- 8:45Speaker 1: be darker? And let me see near the midnight night day?
- 8:53Speaker 1: How long are you going to wait up something happens again?
- 8:58Speaker 1: Just to let me know. Really, town seems cried enough
- 9:02Speaker 1: so far.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Maybe nothing's gonna happen.
- 9:06Speaker 1: They didn't try to kill me just for the fun
- 9:07Speaker 1: of it. No, just not yep, answered Doc.
- 9:14Speaker 5: After I get to the back room.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Maybe it's a patient help beholding my gun out it anyway?
- 9:20Speaker 2: Coming, I'm coming?
- 9:24Speaker 1: Uh yeah, kitty, what are you doing here this time
- 9:27Speaker 1: of night?
- 9:28Speaker 7: And m I tell you he asked me, and of.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Course come in, Come in, kiddy, Well.
- 9:34Speaker 7: Where's the corpse?
- 9:35Speaker 1: But what the body?
- 9:38Speaker 7: I expected to find them all laid out?
- 9:41Speaker 1: Oh, oh, you mean mass You don't seem too upset
- 9:44Speaker 1: about that corpse.
- 9:45Speaker 7: Kitty, Oh, I'm not all that talk didn't fool me.
- 9:49Speaker 7: That just didn't make sense. Chester running around telling everybody
- 9:54Speaker 7: you'd been killed. Oh I know Chester too well, you
- 9:58Speaker 7: were Daddy wouldn't be acting like that, but most everybody
- 10:02Speaker 7: else believes it.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Mats. Oh that's good.
- 10:05Speaker 7: I don't know what you're up to, but I figured
- 10:07Speaker 7: someone's been trying to.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Kill him, right, yeah, ambush kidding. That's not the way
- 10:13Speaker 1: he's telling it, Not the way who's telling I.
- 10:17Speaker 7: Never saw him before. But there's a man standing at
- 10:20Speaker 7: the bar, the long branch, bragging about out drawing you.
- 10:24Speaker 1: You mean he's admitting that he killed me.
- 10:26Speaker 7: I kind of thought you'd like to know.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Yeah, that's your met This is what you've been waiting for.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Anybody with him, kidny, No.
- 10:32Speaker 7: He's alone, as far as I know, anyway, you better
- 10:36Speaker 7: come to life again, Matt. There's going to be trouble
- 10:38Speaker 7: if you don't.
- 10:39Speaker 5: Maybe yeh.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Better not waiting any longer. I'd like to take that
- 10:43Speaker 1: gunman's employer along with him, though you.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Can find out who it is.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Mat this beat it out of him. You better come
- 10:48Speaker 1: with me, kiddy, so you can point the man out
- 10:50Speaker 1: and you can take cover in case he wants to fight.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Any man who's called enough to shoot you in the
- 10:54Speaker 1: dark isn't going to fish on him. Maybe not dark,
- 10:56Speaker 1: but you never know.
- 11:12Speaker 7: Oh, there he is, Mass talk fell in the black hat.
- 11:15Speaker 1: You're kind of drunk, okay, Kiddy. You wait outside. You
- 11:18Speaker 1: see how he's going to Behave all right, Mass, good luck.
- 11:31Speaker 1: I'm Marshall Dylan. Mister, who are you? I'm Joe Rogers.
- 11:37Speaker 1: I thought you was dead, Marshall. I understand you've been
- 11:39Speaker 1: bragging about shooting me. Just talk, Marshall. I didn't mean
- 11:42Speaker 1: nothing by it. I was just talking out of dangerous talk.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Don't you think everybody said you were dead? But I
- 11:48Speaker 1: was waiting for you to come out of your hole. Rogers.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I don't like getting ambushed, Marshall. I never even seen
- 11:54Speaker 1: you before.
- 11:54Speaker 7: I didn't them.
- 11:55Speaker 1: I didn't face the bar Rogers. While I take your gun,
- 11:57Speaker 1: turrun sure. I ain't gonna try nothing the old man, Marshall.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I'll actually can turn around again. You can't risk the
- 12:08Speaker 1: man just for talk of jails. Right across the street, Rogers,
- 12:11Speaker 1: you lead the way. It was just talk. I tell
- 12:13Speaker 1: you can't prove up yet. God, I swear I didn't
- 12:16Speaker 1: try to kill you, Marshall. Just straight ahead, Rogers. And
- 12:18Speaker 1: when we get there, you're gonna do some more talking.
- 12:20Speaker 1: I want to know who hired you. No, but it
- 12:23Speaker 1: hired me. I ain't even got a job, mister Dan.
- 12:31Speaker 1: What are you doing on here?
- 12:33Speaker 7: Who's though?
- 12:34Speaker 1: His name's Rogers Jester. He's been bragging about shooting Ley.
- 12:38Speaker 1: I was just having a little fun. I ain't no gunling.
- 12:40Speaker 1: It doesn't take much of a gunman to try to
- 12:42Speaker 1: ambush a man Rogers. But I didn't do it, Marshall.
- 12:45Speaker 1: I heard them talking about it, and I don't know
- 12:48Speaker 1: why I started saying, I gardment, mister Jone, But mister done, I.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Was on the way up the docs.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I was coming to tell you something.
- 12:55Speaker 5: Well, well, i've been over the lady Gay.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I swear I just don't underst just say it out.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Well, there's a fellow over there, and he's making his
- 13:04Speaker 2: brags about shooting you too.
- 13:07Speaker 1: What that's right? He's saying he out Roger and killed you.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Of course he's a little wrong.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, of course he is. So it was Rogers here,
- 13:17Speaker 1: less scared name of Silver. Sure, I've been drinking Marsians.
- 13:20Speaker 1: I wouldn't have talked like that if i'd been plumb silver. Here,
- 13:24Speaker 1: here's your gun. Rogers. You're telling me loose like you say,
- 13:28Speaker 1: you're just a big talker. But what about the fellow
- 13:30Speaker 1: over the lady game? I don't even want to see
- 13:32Speaker 1: him Chester. He'll shut up faster than on one of
- 13:34Speaker 1: he hears. I'm still around, all right, Rogers? You going
- 13:38Speaker 1: back to the bar unless the men in there laughing
- 13:41Speaker 1: right out of town? Yes, sir, I'm sure. Sorry I've
- 13:44Speaker 1: done him, Marshall, I get gone, Sure, I'm gone. I
- 13:51Speaker 1: don't know what's the matter with the Chester not figuring this.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I might have known there'd be at least a couple
- 13:56Speaker 1: of drunks wanting the reputation of having killed me.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Yes, sure, and now we're right back where we're starting from.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Ay, maybe that whiskey drama, were lying too, You're forgotten.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I got shot at Chester and there's a man somewhere
- 14:12Speaker 1: and dogs still away while they kill me. Hometowns in
- 14:39Speaker 1: America have a lot in common and yet to eat
- 14:41Speaker 1: one of a kind. Take for example, De morn Ioway
- 14:45Speaker 1: all through the state capitol. It's progress that's happening here
- 14:49Speaker 1: in the home of better homes and gardens and Look magazine.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Never mind that the Seventh Street bridge is usually in repair.
- 14:57Speaker 1: The new express waves and the airport on Floor Drive
- 15:00Speaker 1: place Des Moines only minutes or a few hours from
- 15:03Speaker 1: all America. This means more leisure time for golf at Waconda,
- 15:07Speaker 1: horseback riding along the wood Seat River trails on the
- 15:10Speaker 1: south side, or boating and beaching at Gray's Lake near
- 15:14Speaker 1: the new Holiday Inns. If your culture conscience, the Des
- 15:18Speaker 1: Moines Art Center in Greenwood Park has works by Gauya
- 15:21Speaker 1: and Rodin, and soon the new Zoo will be open
- 15:24Speaker 1: at Old Fort des Moines. The college crowd from Drake
- 15:27Speaker 1: University digs the Italian food.
- 15:29Speaker 5: At Babes Downtown.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Others without the Pizza palette prefer Johnny and Key or Rockies.
- 15:36Speaker 1: But if your hometown is des Moines.
- 15:38Speaker 5: You already know this. We only wanted to remind you
- 15:42Speaker 5: it's still there.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Uh, why don't you come in the backway?
- 16:08Speaker 2: Chester, My I almost forgot to give you this telegraph
- 16:12Speaker 2: films and chef Tom Smith.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I wasn't say, well, I couldn't read it that close.
- 16:18Speaker 2: But he's coming for his prisoner.
- 16:20Speaker 1: He'll be here on the stage today the way I today.
- 16:23Speaker 1: And let me see that.
- 16:25Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Uh that must have got delayed somewhere along the line. Yeah,
- 16:30Speaker 1: Thomas you today, that's right. And the telegraphs.
- 16:33Speaker 2: You just can't count on these new things contracting anymore.
- 16:36Speaker 1: What time is it, Chester, No, reckon, that's stage. I'll
- 16:41Speaker 1: be here right now. Let's go see there is must
- 16:50Speaker 1: have pulled in just minutes.
- 16:51Speaker 2: A little passengers milling around like a bunch of kids. Yeah,
- 16:56Speaker 2: look you ain't that Thomas men?
- 16:58Speaker 1: Yeah, that's him.
- 17:00Speaker 5: Know who's that other fella?
- 17:02Speaker 2: He lives tiny for me.
- 17:04Speaker 1: That's Robert Hawkins, a little whiskey drummer. Yes, well, I've
- 17:08Speaker 1: been wondering where he's been. But I'll hello Tom. Well,
- 17:15Speaker 1: all right, Matt hello Chester.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Fine, Well, I'm sure glad that trip's over. Next time
- 17:23Speaker 4: I'll become worse, but.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Have the stage is easier when you're taking a prisoner
- 17:27Speaker 1: back there. I hope you still got him. You hate
- 17:29Speaker 1: to make this trip for nothing. How he's here anytime
- 17:31Speaker 1: you want it. See where Wilburt Hawkins going? Look at here.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Ain't even gonna say hello.
- 17:37Speaker 1: You know that little fellow?
- 17:39Speaker 5: Yeah, you know?
- 17:40Speaker 4: He told me he's staying at the dodge house. Strangers
- 17:43Speaker 4: talking man everyone. He means low time maybe, but he
- 17:46Speaker 4: tells some mighty crazy stories.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Now what he mean? Well, he said he.
- 17:51Speaker 4: Heard a couple of minutes in the bar talking about me.
- 17:54Speaker 4: He didn't know what I meant until I introduced myself
- 17:56Speaker 4: on the stage and he recognized my name, and then
- 17:58Speaker 4: he well.
- 18:00Speaker 1: What are you looking like that? Go ahead, Tom, go ahead?
- 18:02Speaker 1: Well what the Hawkins here? Boy?
- 18:04Speaker 4: You said this one fellow was going to give the
- 18:06Speaker 4: other fellow three hundred dollars to shoot me.
- 18:09Speaker 1: He got the darnness thing? It sure is. I don't know, Matt.
- 18:12Speaker 4: There's a lot of men who'd like to kill me,
- 18:14Speaker 4: but I don't believe they'd be standing around talking about
- 18:16Speaker 4: it that way. I kind of think he made it.
- 18:19Speaker 1: All on now. He didn't make it up, Tom, not quite.
- 18:22Speaker 5: You know something about this.
- 18:23Speaker 1: You mean someone is out to shoot me? Yeah, like,
- 18:28Speaker 1: I'll tell you about it on the way where the
- 18:29Speaker 1: dodge house. All right?
- 18:40Speaker 3: You wait here.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Chestera just in case he gets past us.
- 18:43Speaker 7: Huh.
- 18:43Speaker 4: He ain't gonna get pans to us. But when I
- 18:45Speaker 4: can't figure man, that's why Hawkins, it'd want to kill
- 18:48Speaker 4: you and me. It doesn't make much sense time here.
- 18:52Speaker 1: It is stop small than Matt Dullon.
- 19:00Speaker 5: Hawkins.
- 19:02Speaker 1: We want to talk to you. Come out, up and up, Hawkins,
- 19:09Speaker 1: get out of the way. Town. You tried to kill us. Luck,
- 19:15Speaker 1: I can kick the door open with one foot. You
- 19:17Speaker 1: cover me? Huh, right, you kill him? I tried not to,
- 19:35Speaker 1: Hawkins and hit I had to shoot Hawkins. Why did
- 19:42Speaker 1: you want to kill us? Smith? Me? A lot of
- 19:45Speaker 1: people want to I hear them scene.
- 19:50Speaker 5: Nobody said anything.
- 19:52Speaker 1: You made all that up? Howkins? You took a shot
- 19:54Speaker 1: at me last week? Didn't you? Didn't you? I can't
- 20:01Speaker 1: kill anybody now? Why did you want to? Hawkins? Tell
- 20:05Speaker 1: me I killed the other men? Important me. I told
- 20:13Speaker 1: him about it first and I killed him. And why Hawkins?
- 20:18Speaker 1: I don't know. I had to. I had to do.
- 20:35Speaker 1: He's dead. Not what was he talking about I don't
- 20:40Speaker 1: have time, but it doesn't matter much. I don't understand it.
- 20:45Speaker 1: I never saw him before yesterday. Hawkins was a murderer
- 20:49Speaker 1: tom the kind of doesn't need any particular reason. Nobody'll
- 20:54Speaker 1: ever know why he did what he did, and he
- 20:58Speaker 1: was just crazy. If you like him, you sure it

- 21:34Speaker 1: Regardless of what some people may have said about the
- 21:36Speaker 1: political character of Elijah Cuddlestone, none could dispute his honest

- 21:46Speaker 1: I first started yata. I say, since politics became my life,
- 21:50Speaker 1: my platform, I mean, the base for my platform has

- 21:57Speaker 1: underlying my platform has always been what is good for
- 22:02Speaker 1: my people. Well, he was, of course, not referring to
- 22:05Speaker 1: his party's platform, but rather to his own platform, his
- 22:09Speaker 1: personal set of principles. In French, plat means flat, so
- 22:15Speaker 1: a platform is really a platform. Platform in our political
- 22:20Speaker 1: vocabulary means a statement of principles and policies adopted generally
- 22:25Speaker 1: by a party convention as a basis for the party's support.
- 22:30Speaker 1: The term has been used since the eighteen hundreds. Political planks,
- 22:34Speaker 1: of course, are used to build a political platform and
- 22:39Speaker 1: refer to the party's stand on various public questions.
