- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Welcome to another episode of Five Minute Parenting.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Today I have a special guest, Lori Deverneau.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: She is a longtime Jesus lover and coffee enthusiast.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Yay! To her, they go hand in hand.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: An author, speaker, ordained minister, and board-certified mental health coach.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Laurie is dedicated to serving families and individuals of all backgrounds.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: She has a book, Coffee House Parenting.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: And in that book, she shares struggles and victories she experienced raising triplets plus two while keeping the foundation of her faith to guide her children in their own faith and relationship with God into their adulthood.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Welcome, Laurie.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: And I'm going to turn it over to you to share with parents what's on your heart.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Thanks for having me.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: I'd like to start today with Psalm 127.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: The question I want to propose today is who is building your family?
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: Today we can't, as Christians, let culture build our family.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: It's our responsibility.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: And we can't rely upon taking them to church once or twice a week to get their Sunday school message or their youth group messages without taking those principles we want them to have as Christians, as people who believe in the Bible, and expect them to be able to live them out with just that much of their daily consumption, being overwhelmed with the culture and the agenda of the culture today.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: So it's our responsibility to align our lifestyle with the Word of God.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: As parents, we can take our faith that we believe in in the Bible and work this out into their lives, even when they're little.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: We don't have to wait till they can understand the Bible to actually read them the Bible.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: We can find biblical stories to read them as little kids.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: There's great children's devotional Bibles.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: We can set our own family devotional times.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: We can have our prayers and we can have our devotions.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: We built this with our family of five kids ever since they were little.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: And just as we added more children, we added different devotionals.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: And we still to this day, even though my kids are adults, we have our call-in time for whoever's around to have our family devotionals and read the word of God together.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: And especially when those kids are in school and they start questioning what's going on around them, this is a great time to really find out what they're thinking, where they feel safe and can open up and start to say, hey, mom, this one said this.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: Hey, Dad, this was brought up.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: Why what does the Bible mean with this?
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: And as parents who live the word of God, just give yourself the space also to not feel like you have to always know the answer.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: If you don't know the answers to their questions, let them know.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: I don't know the answer to that question, but I'm gonna find out.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: And you can either take the time yourself to research it in scripture, or you can talk to your pastor or others who you trust to know the word of God to find out answers for your kids.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: Today, our kids need so much of our attention, and that's the one thing that keeps getting pulled away from us.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: Parents, today I want to remind you that love to a child is spelled T-I-M-E.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: That is a commodity that we can give to our children that they can't get from other people to fill them like it can from us.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: And I know we're busy.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Most families today are working two jobs, running their kids all over the place.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: But let me just encourage you, find those moments.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Shut the radio off, shut the TVs off in the car, have those one-on-one conversations with your kids.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: I love one-on-one car time with my kids.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: With having so many children around the same age, I didn't get a lot of one-on-one.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: But if I could run to the store with one or take one to an activity or even for a haircut and always followed by a stop at a coffee shop, don't forget that.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: Teach them while they're young.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: Don't give them the coffee, but always get them a little treat at the coffee shop.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: Just a little plug for my coffee lover fans out there.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: And I just want to continue to encourage you to just keep going after those things that are in your heart to do.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: Be intentional, be aware, pay attention to what the different things are happening in the culture, especially with entertainment.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: Make sure you're you're aware of the music they're listening to and the entertainment choices that they're having, the movies that they're watching.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: And let me remind you, Christian parents, that just because it's a cartoon doesn't mean it's appropriate for your kids.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: You've got to know what's going on out there and take some extra time to find that out.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: There are websites that you can look up, different movie reviews, Christian movie reviews, and just make sure that you're looking those things up to guard your children.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: And above all, let your kids see you yield your heart and your life to the Holy Spirit.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: The Holy Spirit is who empowers us to live powerful Christian lives to help us apply the word of God and let your kids see you making space and making time.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: I was doing an interview one day for a panel, and I was asked a question about what impacted my kids to want to live their lives for God.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: So I knew the questions ahead of time and I got to cheat a little bit.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: And I asked my adult kids, I said, What impacted you growing up?
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: And they said, one of them said to me, watching daddy read the Bible in the same place every day.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Let your kids see you seeking after God.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: Make sure you're doing it individually and together as a family.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: And I know when they're little, it feels like it's impossible to make time to connect with God.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: I used to set up a one day a week was my date, date day with Jesus.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: My husband would take our four kids, four older kids to the farmer's market, and I didn't care about dishes or laundry.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: I just cared about having that one-on-one time with Jesus that I knew I could get once a week.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: And the rest of the week, I did rely upon veggie tails and the donut man as I spiritually fed my kids.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: And I didn't think I'd ever recover from some of those songs being stuck in my head when I would hear scriptures in church.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: But I did.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: I don't always hear the veggie tail songs, but when I do, it's a great memory.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: So again, I just want to encourage you to fight the fight of faith for your family and remember that these are the tools that you're going to be using because life is going to keep happening.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: And the things we want in place is we want our kids to know that they can turn to God, that they can read their Bibles, that they can take their quiet time with the Lord and listen to praise and worship music.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: We do that individually, we do that as a family, and those are the building blocks of building your family of faith.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: And so when they are older, they can start to employ those very things themselves.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: And again, they're not going to learn it going to just church once or twice a week.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: They need to see this practiced in our homes.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: Let's make God a priority.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: And as we do, we can make our families a priority.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: And I trust the Lord that he will perform his word in your family just like he's done in mine.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: God bless you.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Hey, Mallory.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: I just have one word for you.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Oh, where?
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Oh, where is my hairbrush?
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Do you remember that veggie tale?
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Nope.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: Do you hear me?
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: I think we lost connection, but thank you so much for being with us today.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: And I will put info about Lori's website and the show notes and her book.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: So be sure to catch those.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Thank you again, Lori, for being with us.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: It was great.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Take care.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: God bless.
