Latest / The Impossible Life / 4. Pain mastery - breaking the limiting cycle
Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: And pain keeps people from their potential. So I'm looking
- 0:05Speaker 1: at the things that are my enemy, pain being one
- 0:07Speaker 1: of them. I'm not saying pain is always wrong information.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Pain is a great indicator when you're holding a hot paint,
- 0:13Speaker 1: like I need to know, like this is burning my flesh.
- 0:15Speaker 1: I'm not saying that all pain is wrong information, but
- 0:18Speaker 1: I don't want that information to be my master. I'm
- 0:22Speaker 1: looking at the things that can keep me from reaching
- 0:25Speaker 1: my full potential, and avoidance of pain being one of them.
- 0:28Speaker 1: So if I can eliminate that which is within my control,
- 0:31Speaker 1: I'm going to do it.
- 0:34Speaker 2: That's impossible. Let me tell you what I believe.
- 0:37Speaker 3: What your weakness is not your technique. Ya yas, don't think.
- 0:44Speaker 2: You know the Impossible Life podcast.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Man, You're just sitting on a winning lottery protector, an
- 0:52Speaker 1: idea that is fully formed, fully understood that sticks. This
- 0:56Speaker 1: is the Impossible Life Podcast because and I are attempting
- 1:01Speaker 1: to live impossible lives. What we know is that nothing
- 1:05Speaker 1: is impossible. So instead of using impossible as an excuse
- 1:09Speaker 1: to not try, we'll use the pursuit of impossible as
- 1:12Speaker 1: an accelerant for greatness. If something's never been done before,
- 1:17Speaker 1: that just means it's unexplored. If they tell you it's
- 1:20Speaker 1: too hard, it's just waiting to be simplified. Impossible as
- 1:25Speaker 1: a default label used by uncourageous people unwilling to take
- 1:29Speaker 1: a risk.
- 1:30Speaker 3: The real truth is this the solution to any impossible task.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Starts with this question, if I had to, what would
- 1:39Speaker 3: it take?
- 1:43Speaker 2: All right, everybody, welcome to episode four. I am your
- 1:47Speaker 2: co host, Nick Surface. I'm sat next to a man
- 1:49Speaker 2: who his wife describes as Devin's statingly handsome and as
- 1:52Speaker 2: I describe, is the only person who if he says
- 1:55Speaker 2: he's going to hurt me, I actually believe him. My
- 1:57Speaker 2: co host Garrett Uncle back.
- 2:00Speaker 3: For four on awkward intros. Let's keep it up.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Oh, I have every intention of keeping it up. I promise.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I want to say something real quick before you say
- 2:07Speaker 1: anything else, and just say thank you to everyone who's
- 2:09Speaker 1: listened so far. I know a few of you have
- 2:11Speaker 1: been following along since episode one. We're so far on
- 2:14Speaker 1: this journey all the way on episode four, thank you
- 2:16Speaker 1: guys for listening. Continue to share. If this has helped you,
- 2:19Speaker 1: give it to someone who it can help them.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Nick, go ahead, Yeah, no, I would second that it's
- 2:24Speaker 2: been amazing to have the conversations with people that have
- 2:26Speaker 2: been spurred by some of the early episodes. So I
- 2:29Speaker 2: will echo garrett sentiments and say thank you. And by
- 2:31Speaker 2: the way, Garrett, thanks for contrasting my joking and giving
- 2:34Speaker 2: you a hard time with this wonderfully honorable thank you message,
- 2:37Speaker 2: so you can see who the one that you present
- 2:39Speaker 2: to your parents is here and it's not me anyways.
- 2:42Speaker 2: So today's episode is one that I have both looked
- 2:46Speaker 2: forward to and also dreaded in a way, and it's
- 2:49Speaker 2: because we're talking about pain. Now I want to go
- 2:52Speaker 2: back to episode three.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Garrett.
- 2:54Speaker 2: You make the point that our podcast it's not meant
- 2:56Speaker 2: to be that you have to listen to all of them.
- 2:58Speaker 2: What was the term you use?
- 2:59Speaker 3: I cumulative?
- 3:00Speaker 1: Right, It's like math or other things where it builds
- 3:03Speaker 1: upon the last. So a lot of the things on
- 3:06Speaker 1: our podcast will be cumulative. If you want to get
- 3:08Speaker 1: more out of episode four, I would encourage you to
- 3:10Speaker 1: go back and listen to episode three. You can listen
- 3:13Speaker 1: to this as a standalone, so to speak, but they
- 3:15Speaker 1: are a cumulative. Start with episode two and catch up
- 3:18Speaker 1: to us here on episode four. You can listen to
- 3:20Speaker 1: it right now. Though you don't need to jump back
- 3:22Speaker 1: hear what we have to say about paying catch the
- 3:24Speaker 1: lesson and then go back and listen to two and
- 3:26Speaker 1: three again and maybe come back to four again.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Yeah, and we talked about the matrix. And for the record,
- 3:31Speaker 2: y'all don't know this, but every time I come over
- 3:33Speaker 2: to Garrett's house to record this, we talk about the matrix,
- 3:35Speaker 2: so that's not exactly different. But I asked you a
- 3:38Speaker 2: fun question just randomly on the last podcast, and what
- 3:41Speaker 2: you said, Man, I've thought about this literally every day
- 3:44Speaker 2: since we recorded it, and I'm not even that's not.
- 3:46Speaker 3: I think I know what you're talking about.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I've thought about it a couple times too, But go ahead.
- 3:49Speaker 2: But I asked you about the patch upload. If we
- 3:51Speaker 2: could put a Navy sales mindset into somebody, what do
- 3:54Speaker 2: you think would happen? And you eventually got around to saying,
- 3:57Speaker 2: for some people, it would break them. And you said
- 3:59Speaker 2: because they would understand that they've been believing a lie
- 4:02Speaker 2: of impossible, believing a lie of limitation, and believing a
- 4:05Speaker 2: lie of excuses for why they can't be the person
- 4:08Speaker 2: that they want to be. And that gave me, Man,
- 4:11Speaker 2: I get the chills. Even talking about it. That gave
- 4:13Speaker 2: me such a glimpse into what a mindset that I
- 4:17Speaker 2: am so happy exists because I feel like, because of
- 4:19Speaker 2: what you've gone through, because of what you've experienced, because
- 4:22Speaker 2: of the way you've trained and disciplined yourself, that you
- 4:24Speaker 2: literally are looking at life through a different lens. There
- 4:28Speaker 2: you remove fear, you remove the limitations, you remove the
- 4:32Speaker 2: limiting beliefs, and you're a person that is absolutely just alive,
- 4:35Speaker 2: fully alive, and on fire. And for me, that drives
- 4:38Speaker 2: me so much. Man, it just motivates me. So after
- 4:42Speaker 2: that thought process, I just thought, man, we have to
- 4:44Speaker 2: talk about pain. And the reason we have to talk
- 4:46Speaker 2: about pain is because it's the kind of thing that
- 4:48Speaker 2: I think in our society that holds so many people back,
- 4:51Speaker 2: And it's a fear and a wanting to numb pain
- 4:54Speaker 2: and not have to actually face pain that keeps people
- 4:56Speaker 2: from growth. So onto the fun part.
- 5:00Speaker 1: The hardest part of pain, Just to just to kind
- 5:02Speaker 1: of simplify something you said there, one of the hardest
- 5:04Speaker 1: parts of pain is the fear of pain.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Right.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Well, I'm actually going through that right now, So it's
- 5:09Speaker 2: funny you bring that up. Garrett's over there, you guys
- 5:12Speaker 2: can't see him, but he looks like some sort of
- 5:13Speaker 2: zen master. He's like comfortably sitting and just relaxed. I
- 5:16Speaker 2: am completely on edge, and I'm gonna have to adjust
- 5:19Speaker 2: my mindset because we're gonna go do a little something.
- 5:21Speaker 2: To Tony Robbins quote as always, he says that a
- 5:24Speaker 2: belief is a poor substitute for experience. So we can
- 5:27Speaker 2: talk about facing pain, or we can go face pain.
- 5:30Speaker 2: So as an Impossible Life podcast, first we're gonna go
- 5:34Speaker 2: on a little field trip all the way down to
- 5:35Speaker 2: Garrett's garage. Do you want to go ahead? You might
- 5:38Speaker 2: as well explain it, you know better than I do.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:40Speaker 1: So every morning I get into an ice bath and
- 5:44Speaker 1: there's a few different mechanisms for it out there, and
- 5:47Speaker 1: the mechanism is not really what's significant, but because people
- 5:50Speaker 1: will ask, what I use for an ice bath is
- 5:53Speaker 1: a fourteen cubic foot deep freeze like what you know,
- 5:56Speaker 1: someone just you know, if you want to shoot a
- 5:57Speaker 1: buffalo and freeze it, that's where you put it. It's
- 6:00Speaker 1: to fourteen cubic foot deep freeze. It has a temperature
- 6:03Speaker 1: regulator in it so that when the temperature the water
- 6:06Speaker 1: temperature gets below forty degrees, it just turns off the power.
- 6:09Speaker 1: When it gets up to forty three degrees, it turns
- 6:11Speaker 1: the power back on. It's pretty simple mechanism. And I
- 6:14Speaker 1: just keep the water clean and change it out every
- 6:16Speaker 1: couple of weeks so that I can get in every morning,
- 6:19Speaker 1: very early in the morning and sit in forty degree water.
- 6:22Speaker 1: And the reason I do that because you're wondering what
- 6:24Speaker 1: is wrong with you that you would sit in forty
- 6:26Speaker 1: degree water every morning. What I know is that when
- 6:29Speaker 1: you procrastinate, when you make the wrong choices, when you're
- 6:33Speaker 1: not disciplined, when you do things that you shouldn't be doing,
- 6:35Speaker 1: it is most likely out of the avoidance of pain.
- 6:39Speaker 1: You don't do something because of the pain that's associated
- 6:42Speaker 1: with it, and you're trying to not engage that pain. Now,
- 6:45Speaker 1: the reason I get in the ice bath every morning
- 6:47Speaker 1: so early is that the first thing I do is
- 6:49Speaker 1: choose something that is very painful and very difficult. And
- 6:52Speaker 1: there's few things like ice cold water that are very
- 6:56Speaker 1: painful that aren't harmful to you. Like I could do
- 6:59Speaker 1: other things that are super painful, but it would damage
- 7:02Speaker 1: my body over time. Ice water for me is probably
- 7:04Speaker 1: the easiest mechanism to engage in what would would be
- 7:08Speaker 1: a very uncomfortable level of pain, but it's actually not
- 7:11Speaker 1: harmful for your body. So by doing that every morning,
- 7:13Speaker 1: what I'm saying is that I'm not afraid of pain,
- 7:16Speaker 1: that I choose pain, and if I can choose something
- 7:18Speaker 1: like that cold water every morning, then anything else I
- 7:21Speaker 1: engage throughout the day, I'm not going to make the
- 7:24Speaker 1: wrong decision out of pain avoidance.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Yeah, so all that is a nice way of saying
- 7:30Speaker 2: that we're about to go down and freeze. So genuinely
- 7:33Speaker 2: looking forward to this and also genuinely dreading it. So
- 7:36Speaker 2: this is going to be a good practical experience. Just
- 7:39Speaker 2: the heads up. We're actually going to record the video
- 7:41Speaker 2: of this and we're going to put it on our
- 7:42Speaker 2: newly formed Instagram, which is The Impossible Life. So you
- 7:45Speaker 2: can find us on Instagram at The Impossible Life. We'll
- 7:48Speaker 2: put the video up of it. We're going to put
- 7:50Speaker 2: the audio on it right here, so just be mindful
- 7:53Speaker 2: that the audio will not be the quality that you're
- 7:54Speaker 2: used to because we're recording with a different mic. So
- 7:57Speaker 2: with that being said, Garrett, I don't want any tips
- 8:00Speaker 2: know what's going to hurt.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Let's bring the pain before tips.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Last thing before we go down there is I just
- 8:05Speaker 1: want to say I don't use Some people might be
- 8:08Speaker 1: wondering or asking if you're aware of him. I don't
- 8:10Speaker 1: use any whim Hoff methods, and that's intentional. Like wim
- 8:13Speaker 1: Hoff is a legend the iceman. He what what he
- 8:17Speaker 1: teaches works and is very useful. I don't use his
- 8:20Speaker 1: teachings on purpose because I want the cold water to
- 8:23Speaker 1: continually be painful for me. I'm not trying to make
- 8:26Speaker 1: the cold water easier.
- 8:28Speaker 2: So real practical question, and this one is a two parter. Obviously,
- 8:32Speaker 2: you sanitize the water. I'm just wondering, has anyone ever
- 8:35Speaker 2: peed in the tank from the cold water? And if
- 8:37Speaker 2: I happen to be the first, what is the punishment.
- 8:39Speaker 1: It's actually it's going to be harder for me than
- 8:41Speaker 1: for you, for any seals that are listening. You know
- 8:43Speaker 1: what I'm talking about. We spend so much time in
- 8:46Speaker 1: cold water. It's almost like an auto reaction from all
- 8:50Speaker 1: the times in a wetsuit that you get in the
- 8:51Speaker 1: cold water. First thing you do pee immediately, like hit
- 8:54Speaker 1: the cold water, pee immediately. To answer your question, no,
- 8:58Speaker 1: no one has peed not pee in my deep freeze.
- 9:02Speaker 1: But there's also been very few opportunities because people ask
- 9:06Speaker 1: me all the time, friends, people on social media like hey,
- 9:09Speaker 1: I want to check this out. I want to try it.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I've probably invited one hundred people like hey, come over anytime,
- 9:14Speaker 1: like text me, I'll tell you I want to be
- 9:16Speaker 1: in the ice bath. You can come join me, like
- 9:18Speaker 1: I'll get in. You can get in, you can try
- 9:20Speaker 1: it out.
- 9:20Speaker 3: I have.
- 9:21Speaker 1: I think you're the third person besides me that's been
- 9:24Speaker 1: in there.
- 9:25Speaker 3: If you do actually get.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Into the meeting, call me out straight away. We haven't
- 9:29Speaker 2: even gotten into this. You're already calling me out. But
- 9:30Speaker 2: I would like to point out that you get in
- 9:32Speaker 2: at four thirty in the morning, so when you're like
- 9:34Speaker 2: text me like, not many people are up atour thirty
- 9:36Speaker 2: going yo, I really want to get in the deep
- 9:37Speaker 2: freeze right now. That's probably why you haven't had as
- 9:39Speaker 2: many people. But I'm hot to be in such a
- 9:41Speaker 2: small class. If I do happen to pee in this,
- 9:44Speaker 2: you may see some video and audio of me getting
- 9:47Speaker 2: beat down as well. So this could be a just.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Part painful as it is, it's going to be like
- 9:50Speaker 1: most people's relationship with pain. The thought of it was
- 9:53Speaker 1: harder than the thing, for sure.
- 9:55Speaker 2: And I actually got to say, I am actually looking
- 9:57Speaker 2: forward to this because once again I'm going back and
- 9:59Speaker 2: switching in to being a little bit more serious what
- 10:01Speaker 2: you said last time about the lie, and I understand
- 10:04Speaker 2: the value having looked at you have someone who's got
- 10:06Speaker 2: victory over this. I want that, man. So I'm gonna
- 10:09Speaker 2: face this pain. I'm gonna embrace it, and let's get
- 10:11Speaker 2: after it, all right.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Let's do it all right.
- 10:13Speaker 1: So we are going to get in the ice bath
- 10:16Speaker 1: real quick. What we're gonna do is actually just what
- 10:19Speaker 1: I call my minimum. Some days I get in for
- 10:22Speaker 1: as much as ten minutes.
- 10:25Speaker 3: I won't be in that long. Nick won't be in
- 10:26Speaker 3: that long.
- 10:27Speaker 1: If we did ten minutes, now, the podcast part two
- 10:30Speaker 1: that we're going to do right after this would not
- 10:32Speaker 1: go very well because there will not be very much
- 10:34Speaker 1: blood in our brains. So we're gonna do what I
- 10:36Speaker 1: call is my minimum. And you'll see it here in
- 10:38Speaker 1: a second. But I get in and I do a
- 10:39Speaker 1: slow countdown from thirty and I'm speaking with every number
- 10:42Speaker 1: that I say, and then I dunk my head under
- 10:45Speaker 1: the water. Time is really around two minutes to do
- 10:48Speaker 1: the whole thing two to three minutes. So that's what
- 10:50Speaker 1: we're gonna do here, so we can actually go back
- 10:52Speaker 1: upstairs and get some good podcast audio. And it's also
- 10:56Speaker 1: giving Nick a semi low bar to jump over, not
- 10:58Speaker 1: just throw the right in.
- 10:59Speaker 3: At ten minutes.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I will say, though, like this from three minutes to
- 11:03Speaker 1: ten minute period is not the hard part. I think
- 11:05Speaker 1: the hardest part in the ice bath is the first
- 11:08Speaker 1: thirty seconds. But here we go.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Ooh nice and chili.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Thank you Lord thirty, Thank you, Lord, twenty nine, Thank you,
- 11:28Speaker 1: Lord twenty eight, Thank you Lord twenty seven.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Fast forward to Garrett calmly dealing with the countdown from
- 11:35Speaker 2: thirty and finishing by dunking his head under the water.
- 11:38Speaker 2: That's the audio you hear when we come back in.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Is him coming up out of it.
- 11:48Speaker 3: When you're feeling extra froggy, you do a second winner.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I guess he's feeling froggy, jeezy, feels good.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Okay, your turn?
- 12:04Speaker 1: Yeah all right, Nick, we just changed out. I got out.
- 12:08Speaker 1: I'm trying to quit shaking. My hands are dry.
- 12:10Speaker 3: It's next turn, Nick, What do you want to do?
- 12:12Speaker 3: Are you going to?
- 12:14Speaker 2: I mean, I am. I'm really trying to lean into this.
- 12:17Speaker 3: It's really lean into it. Just get in. Do a
- 12:18Speaker 3: thirty countdown.
- 12:19Speaker 1: If you want to do what I did, do it,
- 12:21Speaker 1: but just do a thirty countdown and then recount at
- 12:23Speaker 1: least one dunk.
- 12:24Speaker 4: Well, I have to, don't you putting this hair? You've
- 12:26Speaker 4: got to it's the hard part, all right, Here goes nothing.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Get the shoulders blow the water, shoulders blow the water.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Twenty gets the shoulders blow the water sinking this.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Twenty five.
- 12:47Speaker 2: This is the day is made.
- 12:49Speaker 5: Twenty four, This is the day the Lord is made.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Okay, it's at this point that I realize I'm in
- 12:53Speaker 2: serious trouble, and we're going to fast forward to when
- 12:55Speaker 2: I get to the ten mark and decided to give myself,
- 12:58Speaker 2: shamefully a little short cut. Eleven.
- 13:01Speaker 5: This is the data Lord is made. Ten nine, eight, seven, six,
- 13:08Speaker 5: five four three.
- 13:11Speaker 3: This is the data Lords made. Two is the data
- 13:14Speaker 3: Lord is made.
- 13:15Speaker 5: One.
- 13:15Speaker 2: This is the Dana lords man.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Head all the way under the water, counting two. Don't
- 13:22Speaker 1: don't get out your your hair was sticking out. You
- 13:24Speaker 1: gotta go all the way down.
- 13:25Speaker 3: You can do it.
- 13:29Speaker 6: Yeah, that's good, cheerful getting out, all right, he did it.
- 13:38Speaker 6: Give us your reaction, Man, that sucked.
- 13:43Speaker 5: Oh that hurts, man, that hurts, but.
- 13:49Speaker 3: I'll lean into it.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Oh yeah, man.
- 13:56Speaker 4: Fuck, my body feels like electricity is going through right now.
- 13:58Speaker 5: Man.
- 13:58Speaker 3: You feel good, now, don't you. I do feel good,
- 14:00Speaker 3: definitely feel awake, tell you what.
- 14:02Speaker 2: But it literally feels like I can feel like my
- 14:05Speaker 2: inside is shaking, like I can feel the electricity gone through.
- 14:09Speaker 3: My well, I'm shaking holding the camera over here.
- 14:11Speaker 2: So but like, I mean, it feels like current is
- 14:13Speaker 2: flowing through my body right now.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, take some big deep breaths.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Okay, that was intense. Uh, we are back, and I
- 14:25Speaker 2: got to say that hurt a lot. My hair is
- 14:28Speaker 2: no longer perfectly quafft and styled, which is really tough
- 14:32Speaker 2: for me.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Who says I don't.
- 14:34Speaker 2: I say quaft. I thought that's a good word, man.
- 14:37Speaker 2: But yeah, that was that was intense. I gotta say, Man,
- 14:40Speaker 2: I don't know if I sound super energetic, like the
- 14:43Speaker 2: shivering hasn't really set in, but I feel incredibly invigorated.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Fourty degrees will wake you up.
- 14:49Speaker 3: In the morning exactly. That's why I do it. There's
- 14:51Speaker 3: so many positives.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I would highly encourage you to watch
- 14:55Speaker 2: the videos as well, so you can watch the actual
- 14:57Speaker 2: realization of pain literally in every part of your body.
- 15:01Speaker 2: I got to say that I.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Apologize if Nick's video is not still because I was
- 15:07Speaker 1: shaking a little bit.
- 15:08Speaker 3: Holding the camera form.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I mean that's yeah, because Garrett, we're gonna
- 15:12Speaker 2: go into this, but I thought it was really friendly
- 15:14Speaker 2: of you to go first, so I could sit there
- 15:15Speaker 2: and watch you suffer and be like, oh my gosh,
- 15:17Speaker 2: this is a Navy seal who's done this like god
- 15:19Speaker 2: knows how many times, and look how much he's kind
- 15:21Speaker 2: of trying to hold it together. And then I'm going
- 15:23Speaker 2: to jump in there, even though, as we discussed on
- 15:26Speaker 2: the last podcast, I'm better at cold water because of
- 15:28Speaker 2: all my surfing.
- 15:28Speaker 1: But whatever, Yeah, we'll let social media decide on that one.
- 15:31Speaker 2: We okay, don't Yeah, I don't want to have a
- 15:33Speaker 2: vote on that cause I don't feel confident about that.
- 15:36Speaker 2: All right, So let's get back into it. So the
- 15:38Speaker 2: whole point of this is dealing with pain and something
- 15:42Speaker 2: that I've observed, and I'm gonna put this in CBT
- 15:45Speaker 2: framework cognitive behavioral therapy, because this really made a lot
- 15:47Speaker 2: of sense to me. So the basic CBT framework, and
- 15:51Speaker 2: I'm sure you're aware of this, Garrett, is it's like
- 15:53Speaker 2: a circle, a wheel that goes around and around, and
- 15:55Speaker 2: at the top you have the circumstances, and then you
- 15:58Speaker 2: have your thinking about the circle. Cumstances, and like we
- 16:01Speaker 2: touched about last week, those are tied to core beliefs.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Core beliefs like your thought generators. So anyways, you have
- 16:05Speaker 2: the circumstances, then your thoughts. Then the thoughts generate your emotions,
- 16:11Speaker 2: Your emotions generate your actions. Your actions obviously then change
- 16:14Speaker 2: the circumstances and the whole process starts again. Well, what
- 16:18Speaker 2: I've observed a lot when it comes to pain is
- 16:20Speaker 2: that people have these circumstances that inherently involve something that
- 16:24Speaker 2: is difficult or traumatic or painful. Their thinking on it
- 16:28Speaker 2: is there, and that's basically they're on their core beliefs,
- 16:30Speaker 2: and the emotion that is generated is pain, it's fear,
- 16:34Speaker 2: it's anxiety, and so then the action that they take
- 16:37Speaker 2: is numbing the pain. They never actually deal with the pain.
- 16:40Speaker 2: So guess what, when you get back to the top
- 16:41Speaker 2: of the wheel, the circumstance is still there. It's still pain.
- 16:44Speaker 2: It's still fear. So when I look at that, I
- 16:47Speaker 2: just realize after what we talked about, and you touched
- 16:50Speaker 2: on it when you were talking about the vision of
- 16:52Speaker 2: life and just how a potential patch upload of a
- 16:55Speaker 2: Navy seal's mind would break. Someone was just there's so
- 16:57Speaker 2: much avoidance of pain, and I feel like, if you're
- 17:00Speaker 2: going to really go to a new level and truly
- 17:02Speaker 2: live an impossible life, you have to learn to deal
- 17:04Speaker 2: with pain. So we just had our practical experience of pain.
- 17:09Speaker 1: I mean so without without looking at the science, without
- 17:11Speaker 1: looking talking about CBT, which I enjoy both of those things.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Let's just look at you practically. Okay, this is fifteen
- 17:18Speaker 1: fifteen minutes ago you were thinking like, okay, this is
- 17:21Speaker 1: really going to suck.
- 17:22Speaker 3: And it did.
- 17:23Speaker 1: But now after we're back in the studio, and aren't
- 17:26Speaker 1: you glad that you did that?
- 17:28Speaker 5: Oh?
- 17:28Speaker 2: One, man, I feel amazing.
- 17:31Speaker 1: And so it's so funny to think like, let's go
- 17:34Speaker 1: inside of your brain for a second.
- 17:36Speaker 2: This is scary.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Let's go inside of your brain for a second. And
- 17:40Speaker 1: now Nick is thinking, man, this was such a positive experience.
- 17:43Speaker 1: But fifteen minutes ago, you're you were unsure about it,
- 17:46Speaker 1: and even though, like if I told you, Nick, this
- 17:49Speaker 1: is going to be great, you would say, I know,
- 17:51Speaker 1: but I'm uncertain. I'm uncomfortable all of that. Think about
- 17:55Speaker 1: the short, the large transition that you've made in a
- 17:58Speaker 1: short amount of time. I'm not I don't want to
- 18:01Speaker 1: do this. This is going to be uncomfortable. And now
- 18:02Speaker 1: you're like that was a very positive experience. You got
- 18:05Speaker 1: out of the ice bath and said, I feel electric.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Oh right, how do you make it? Let me ask you,
- 18:09Speaker 1: how do you make a jump that large in such
- 18:12Speaker 1: a short amount of time.
- 18:13Speaker 2: I'll be I mean so being really honest. While you
- 18:15Speaker 2: were in the bath and I'm watching you go through it,
- 18:18Speaker 2: I was actually surprised because, like I said, I knew
- 18:21Speaker 2: we were going to do this, and I've actually been
- 18:23Speaker 2: in a weird sort of way looking forward to it
- 18:25Speaker 2: because I know, I just feel like when I look
- 18:27Speaker 2: at you, I see what the benefits are of facing this,
- 18:30Speaker 2: and I've had to face some pain in my life
- 18:31Speaker 2: as well. But I was just really like my heartbeat
- 18:36Speaker 2: was elevated. I could feel like that sort of nervous
- 18:38Speaker 2: feeling before I got in there, and I was never
- 18:41Speaker 2: going to flight on that because you know, you're a
- 18:43Speaker 2: Navy CeAl. Hold am I gonna be like, hey, sorry, Garrett,
- 18:45Speaker 2: the water's a little too cold. Bro, Like, I'm not
- 18:46Speaker 2: feeling it today. A couple of things of being a
- 18:49Speaker 2: friend with you is I can never tell you I'm tired,
- 18:50Speaker 2: and I can never tell you I can't because I
- 18:52Speaker 2: just feel like such a coward if I tell you
- 18:54Speaker 2: either of those things. But yeah, I mean it was
- 18:57Speaker 2: a matter of when I got in the water, it
- 19:00Speaker 2: was very conscious that if I tried to tense up
- 19:02Speaker 2: and fight it, and as I was going towards this,
- 19:05Speaker 2: I knew the pain was coming. But instead of tensing up,
- 19:07Speaker 2: I tried as best as I could to just relax
- 19:09Speaker 2: and be like, hey, you're gonna feel this. You can't
- 19:12Speaker 2: fight it, just embrace it. So I don't know if
- 19:14Speaker 2: you go through that or how you deal with it,
- 19:16Speaker 2: But no.
- 19:17Speaker 1: You're talking about something that's really important, which is your
- 19:19Speaker 1: relationship with pain. If you've seen the movie Fight Club,
- 19:23Speaker 1: you remember the scene where you know, he pours the
- 19:26Speaker 1: stuff on his hand and he's suffering and he goes
- 19:28Speaker 1: to his cave. He slaps him across the face and says,
- 19:31Speaker 1: where are you right now?
- 19:32Speaker 3: Come back?
- 19:32Speaker 1: Like don't try to hide from your pain. It's a
- 19:34Speaker 1: really great golfer. I love golf. I like golf analogy.
- 19:37Speaker 1: It's hardest sport of all time by far. It's not
- 19:39Speaker 1: a sport way better than soccer and basic. Okay, that
- 19:42Speaker 1: was just a little jab at me and Nick in
- 19:45Speaker 1: the studio. Here in golf there's a great golfer. I
- 19:47Speaker 1: believe it was Ben Hogan who said that you should
- 19:49Speaker 1: hold a golf club like you're holding a bird. If
- 19:52Speaker 1: you don't hold onto it enough, the bird can fly away.
- 19:54Speaker 1: If you try to hold on to it too hard,
- 19:57Speaker 1: then you'll crush the bird.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Similar analogy for pain.
- 20:00Speaker 1: People either try to hide from their pain, like literally,
- 20:03Speaker 1: like in the movie Fight Club, they go to their
- 20:05Speaker 1: cave to like hide from it, like they think that
- 20:07Speaker 1: they can meditate their way out of the ice bath,
- 20:10Speaker 1: or they get in the ice bath and they tense
- 20:12Speaker 1: up and they try to push back harder the pain.
- 20:15Speaker 1: You cannot ignore the pain. You cannot hide the pain.
- 20:18Speaker 1: It is to be present with the pain, hold the pain,
- 20:21Speaker 1: be there with it, and acknowledge it. And just once
- 20:24Speaker 1: you do that, you realize this does have power over me.
- 20:27Speaker 1: But it's limited, right, acknowledge the limited power that pain
- 20:31Speaker 1: has over you. All that it can do is tell
- 20:33Speaker 1: you that it's uncomfortable. It can't make you do anything.
- 20:35Speaker 1: But most people live a life where they let pain
- 20:38Speaker 1: force them into what they do or don't do.
- 20:40Speaker 3: Man see.
- 20:41Speaker 2: And that's so true though, because we in our society
- 20:44Speaker 2: everywhere you go, if you have pain, there's a pill
- 20:47Speaker 2: to make it go away, or you want to do
- 20:49Speaker 2: whatever it can and really it's an indication of something, right.
- 20:52Speaker 2: I Mean, you'll hear a lot of people who are
- 20:54Speaker 2: a lot smarter than I am talk about how pain
- 20:56Speaker 2: is an indicator and how you need to be aware
- 20:58Speaker 2: of it because it's touching on something deeper. But so
- 21:01Speaker 2: many times it's just like, well, no, I don't want
- 21:03Speaker 2: to I don't want to go any deeper or find
- 21:04Speaker 2: out why.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I just want to just we live in a world
- 21:07Speaker 1: that avoids pain, both in the positive and the negative.
- 21:10Speaker 1: I have this conversation with people about climate controlled homes, right,
- 21:14Speaker 1: that's made us weaker to when we're going outside, Like
- 21:18Speaker 1: when it's funny like my wife and I were watching
- 21:20Speaker 1: a TV show that's, you know, from the nineteen forties,
- 21:24Speaker 1: and the people are all outside and she's talking about, like,
- 21:27Speaker 1: you know, it must have been cooler than I go. Know,
- 21:29Speaker 1: people had a different relationship to heat back then because
- 21:32Speaker 1: they didn't go inside to a sixty nine degree climate
- 21:34Speaker 1: controlled home. When they go inside at seventy seven degrees,
- 21:38Speaker 1: So when they go outside and it's eighty five, it's
- 21:41Speaker 1: not that bad when there's a breeze.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Right.
- 21:42Speaker 1: But today, people who live in our society, they go
- 21:45Speaker 1: outside and it's eighty five degrees.
- 21:46Speaker 3: Like, oh my gosh, it's so hot. Right.
- 21:49Speaker 1: That's because the relationship we have with temperature, we're so
- 21:54Speaker 1: used to a zone that is in the most comfortable phase.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 21:57Speaker 1: We sleep at perfect temperatures, are home a dial to
- 22:00Speaker 1: exactly what we want, and we go outside and we're.
- 22:02Speaker 3: Like, oh, this is gross. Right.
- 22:04Speaker 1: That's most people's relationship with pain, Like they're trying to
- 22:07Speaker 1: be as comfortable as possible, and they and that's fine,
- 22:10Speaker 1: that's all fine and good. I enjoy going to the
- 22:12Speaker 1: spa and nice things, just like anybody else. But I
- 22:15Speaker 1: don't want I don't let it make me into someone.
- 22:17Speaker 1: I don't let it make me into someone that breaks
- 22:19Speaker 1: my relationship with pain, where pain can control me or
- 22:22Speaker 1: pain can tell me what I do or don't do.
- 22:25Speaker 2: So okay, obviously we went in the ice bath, and
- 22:28Speaker 2: for the record, I mean people won't know. I'm still cold,
- 22:30Speaker 2: like my arms feel like.
- 22:32Speaker 1: They're Nick was only in there for maybe forty five seconds.
- 22:35Speaker 2: To remember, I'm going to go back and look at
- 22:36Speaker 2: the footage and find out exactly that's my guess.
- 22:38Speaker 3: I'm probably not far off.
- 22:39Speaker 2: I really hope it's more than a minute, including the
- 22:41Speaker 2: head dunk and all the instruction you gave me where
- 22:43Speaker 2: you forced me to go down there.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Aye, you started your thirty second count before your shoulders
- 22:47Speaker 1: are really under the water.
- 22:48Speaker 3: But that's okay, it was your first time. I'll let
- 22:49Speaker 3: it slide.
- 22:50Speaker 2: For the record, whenever you told me to push down further,
- 22:53Speaker 2: I mean, this is what I mean about the pain.
- 22:54Speaker 2: So when the water gets up around your throat, you
- 22:57Speaker 2: feel your throat close up, and it was interesting because you.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Can you'll hear it when you go back and listen
- 23:02Speaker 1: to your audio of your counting when you get lower.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, Well, I love how much you guys can't
- 23:06Speaker 2: see how much he's smiling saying this.
- 23:08Speaker 1: I'm not smiling because I enjoy seeing Nick be uncomfortable.
- 23:13Speaker 1: I'm smiling knowing that Nick is becoming aware of his
- 23:17Speaker 1: relationship with cold water, which is an indicator to our
- 23:20Speaker 1: relationship with pain. When you look at like how uncomfortable
- 23:24Speaker 1: people are about cold water, the same thing, how people
- 23:27Speaker 1: are uncomfortable a lot of different things. Where did you
- 23:29Speaker 1: learn that? Or we can talk about fear, Where did
- 23:32Speaker 1: you learn to be afraid? Because like my daughter is
- 23:35Speaker 1: seven months old, she's not afraid of the dark. So
- 23:38Speaker 1: when do you learn to be afraid of the dark?
- 23:39Speaker 1: And who taught you? Those are the questions that I
- 23:42Speaker 1: wonder about fear. Those are the questions you should be asking,
- 23:45Speaker 1: and the questions you should be asking about pain. When
- 23:48Speaker 1: did I let pain become my master? When was when
- 23:51Speaker 1: did pain change in my life from being an indicator
- 23:54Speaker 1: to being a guide?
- 23:57Speaker 2: Man? That is so good. So before we move on,
- 24:00Speaker 2: because I do want to go deeper into what you
- 24:02Speaker 2: just said. If you haven't watched the video, that's fine,
- 24:05Speaker 2: you're going to hear the audio. I'm probably not gonna
- 24:07Speaker 2: play at all. I don't really know how we're going
- 24:09Speaker 2: to mix it in there, because I don't think you
- 24:10Speaker 2: want to listen to the whole thing. But what you
- 24:12Speaker 2: will see is when Garrett gets in in the morning,
- 24:14Speaker 2: and because you normally do this first thing when you
- 24:16Speaker 2: wake up, you're going through declarations. Now, you and I
- 24:19Speaker 2: are both followers of Jesus, so we our declarations are
- 24:22Speaker 2: very much centered on the Word of God. That may
- 24:24Speaker 2: seem weird to some people. If it does, that's fine.
- 24:27Speaker 2: We're unapologetic about it. What I will say is it
- 24:29Speaker 2: was very interesting for me as a person. I've never
- 24:32Speaker 2: seen you in that ice bath before, but I basically
- 24:35Speaker 2: watched you do your declarations and be intentional. And we
- 24:38Speaker 2: talked about core values last week and about the value
- 24:40Speaker 2: of knowing who you are, and I just want to
- 24:43Speaker 2: highlight how that really stuck out to me that while
- 24:46Speaker 2: you're in there suffering with your pain, you're reaffirming who
- 24:49Speaker 2: you are.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Yeah, what I didn't do because I already did all
- 24:52Speaker 1: that this morning. I saved my icepath for today because
- 24:55Speaker 1: Nick said he wanted to do it for the podcast.
- 24:57Speaker 1: But normally, when I get in there first thing in
- 24:59Speaker 1: the morning. This may surprise some of you, or some
- 25:01Speaker 1: of you might appreciate it. The first thing I do,
- 25:03Speaker 1: as I'm getting in the water, I say Lord forgive
- 25:06Speaker 1: me and my sins I say, Lord, wash me in
- 25:08Speaker 1: your blood and make me more like you. And then
- 25:10Speaker 1: I begin to speak things over myself. And then when
- 25:12Speaker 1: I'm done making some declarations, when I'm done asking for forgiveness,
- 25:16Speaker 1: when I'm done praying and speaking with the Lord, then
- 25:19Speaker 1: I start my thirty countdown and I take my time there,
- 25:22Speaker 1: and each one of those you can feel the pain.
- 25:24Speaker 1: But I'm in my prayer, I'm also saying, Lord, let
- 25:27Speaker 1: me be aware that my flesh is weak, so that
- 25:29Speaker 1: I can acknowledge you more, and then I can be
- 25:31Speaker 1: more like you. You don't have to think like me.
- 25:33Speaker 1: You can disagree with my spiritual beliefs, and that's fine.
- 25:37Speaker 1: I would ask you the question that my pastor, as
- 25:40Speaker 1: someone who's spoken into my life greatly, someone who also
- 25:43Speaker 1: is a great example of physical discipline what he calls
- 25:46Speaker 1: the effect inness question, and that's how's that working for you?
- 25:49Speaker 1: My relationship with pain is working for me. My relationship
- 25:53Speaker 1: with the Lord is working for me. And so that's
- 25:55Speaker 1: the only proof that I have to share it with you.
- 25:57Speaker 1: And that's the only proof that I have to tell
- 25:59Speaker 1: you that you should try it. So I'm asking for forgiveness,
- 26:02Speaker 1: I'm making my declarations and I'm asking to be more
- 26:05Speaker 1: aware that my flesh is weak because it is, and
- 26:08Speaker 1: so that I don't I don't live in that world
- 26:10Speaker 1: of flesh that I live acknowledging Christ and that's where
- 26:13Speaker 1: my that's my source of power. I know some very
- 26:16Speaker 1: tough human beings, but that if you, if all your
- 26:19Speaker 1: strength comes from your flesh, I know that you are
- 26:22Speaker 1: still very weak.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I just wanted to point that out.
- 26:26Speaker 1: I mean, so that wasn't the that's not the vein
- 26:28Speaker 1: that we wanted to go down on this episode, but
- 26:30Speaker 1: since we're going to talk about it, I wanted to
- 26:32Speaker 1: mention that.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Yeah, no, and I think it's worth I mean, that's
- 26:34Speaker 2: why I brought it up because it was really it
- 26:37Speaker 2: really stood out to me how intentional you were about
- 26:39Speaker 2: who you are. And that is what you're doing. I mean,
- 26:41Speaker 2: you find who you are and what God says about
- 26:43Speaker 2: you and in the Word of God. And so you're
- 26:45Speaker 2: sitting there telling yourself while you're basically suffering, not even
- 26:48Speaker 2: basically you were suffering. It's four degrees, it's freezing. So
- 26:51Speaker 2: the purpose of you doing that every day?
- 26:53Speaker 1: And you touched on this and we don't live in
- 26:55Speaker 1: a world that initiates very much suffering. No, so that
- 26:57Speaker 1: I engage it on my own. I think it's a
- 27:00Speaker 1: great part of the human experience for us to understand
- 27:03Speaker 1: that so many great humans have learned from suffering, but
- 27:06Speaker 1: most people live today do all they can to avoid it.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Yes, so your purpose of your ice path every single
- 27:12Speaker 2: day is to not let pain conquer you.
- 27:14Speaker 3: Yep. I have my cup of suffering, and then I
- 27:16Speaker 3: have my cup of.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Coffee, right, and he has phenomenal coffee. Secretly, I only
- 27:20Speaker 2: ever started this podcast with and so I could drink
- 27:22Speaker 2: his coffee. It's just on the side note. Seriously, it's amazing.
- 27:25Speaker 2: But so I love that man. So you're you're basically
- 27:29Speaker 2: going up to the Boogeyman and just looking in the
- 27:31Speaker 2: eye and just going, hey, I'll tell you what I'm
- 27:33Speaker 2: not scared of you. That is basically what your ice
- 27:35Speaker 2: path is. But for so many people out there that
- 27:37Speaker 2: are listening, and I can speak as someone who was
- 27:39Speaker 2: in this boat, and yeah, I don't even want to
- 27:41Speaker 2: try and psychoanalyze myself right now on this. But so
- 27:45Speaker 2: many people, when it comes to dealing with pain, they
- 27:48Speaker 2: don't even really know how. I don't necessarily know that
- 27:50Speaker 2: they're even aware that that is what they're hiding from,
- 27:52Speaker 2: but they get into this cycle of numbing that pain.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Like I talked about before, Oftentimes this is with the
- 27:58Speaker 2: obvious things. It's drugs and alcohol I think are probably
- 28:01Speaker 2: the two biggest pain numbers of choice. I would throw
- 28:04Speaker 2: sex in there, you can throw a work, you can
- 28:06Speaker 2: throw even exercise, and some positive things in there where
- 28:09Speaker 2: people are just kind of doing something to change their state,
- 28:12Speaker 2: avoid the pain and not have to deal with it.
- 28:14Speaker 2: So how would you go about if you're from a
- 28:17Speaker 2: person who's like that right now, and I mean you
- 28:20Speaker 2: talk about the anticipation of the thing is worse than
- 28:22Speaker 2: the actual thing. How do you go from man, I
- 28:25Speaker 2: may not even know about this pain, I'm relying on this,
- 28:27Speaker 2: but hey, I'm functional to no, I'm going to face
- 28:31Speaker 2: my pain and I'm going to step into this and
- 28:33Speaker 2: lean into it.
- 28:34Speaker 1: There is a waking up that has to happen for
- 28:36Speaker 1: people to make that shift. Like we talk about people
- 28:39Speaker 1: having an avoidance of pain, Most people who have an
- 28:42Speaker 1: avoidance of pain would not tell you they.
- 28:43Speaker 3: Have an avoidance of pain.
- 28:45Speaker 1: And people ask me about the ice bath, and we
- 28:48Speaker 1: talk about it, and then I say you should try it.
- 28:50Speaker 1: You know, you should check that out. You're welcome to
- 28:52Speaker 1: come over, or you should get one. I promise it
- 28:54Speaker 1: would have positive benefits on your life. And the responses
- 28:57Speaker 1: are typically somewhere they say something along the lines of, oh, well,
- 29:01Speaker 1: I don't have to do that. They think that's what
- 29:04Speaker 1: they're saying. What they're really saying is I'm not willing
- 29:06Speaker 1: to engage that level of pain to grow. What I
- 29:09Speaker 1: can tell you is for me in the last year
- 29:10Speaker 1: and a half, where I've been doing this almost every day,
- 29:13Speaker 1: that my life has grown and it's pushed me as
- 29:15Speaker 1: a person to be better and grow myself. So let
- 29:18Speaker 1: me ask you as a listener. And I'm telling you, like, hey,
- 29:21Speaker 1: you should buy an ice bath, and you're telling me
- 29:23Speaker 1: I don't have to do that. Let me ask you
- 29:25Speaker 1: this question. Why would you not Why would you not
- 29:29Speaker 1: be willing to engage three to five minutes of pain
- 29:32Speaker 1: a day if it would make you better? What is
- 29:36Speaker 1: your relationship with pain that you're not willing to give
- 29:39Speaker 1: three to five minutes, three to five minutes of your
- 29:43Speaker 1: entire day that would be get the hardest thing out
- 29:46Speaker 1: of the way early in the morning, make you grow,
- 29:48Speaker 1: personally make you stronger, but you're not willing to do that.
- 29:54Speaker 2: So something clicked while you were talking there. You're basically
- 29:58Speaker 2: removing you have a definition of aggressiveness that or aggression,
- 30:01Speaker 2: which is basically removing hesitation an inserting confidence. That's your definition.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Correct insert belief for this hesitation? Right, Okay, yeah, insert belief,
- 30:09Speaker 2: remove hesitation. What you're essentially doing by getting yourself in
- 30:13Speaker 2: this water and facing pain every single day is you're
- 30:16Speaker 2: retraining your thought process.
- 30:17Speaker 3: Aren't you.
- 30:18Speaker 2: You're basically retraining yourself that instead of hesitating like, oh,
- 30:21Speaker 2: this is gonna hurt and we all know it. If
- 30:22Speaker 2: you tell someone to punch you in the arm, you
- 30:24Speaker 2: see somebody tense up and they sit there and they
- 30:26Speaker 2: know what's coming. You're removing that and just going like, yeah,
- 30:28Speaker 2: hit me, bro, I know it's.
- 30:30Speaker 1: My punch in the face every day. That doesn't leave
- 30:32Speaker 1: me with a black eye. That's what an ice bath.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Is, man. So that's how you that's how you're basically
- 30:38Speaker 2: training that whole relationship with pain is it's like you
- 30:42Speaker 2: can't hurt me because I'm exposing myself to it.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I've told myself time and time again since I
- 30:48Speaker 1: was young, and now in a new season of my life,
- 30:50Speaker 1: I'm finding a new way to do it that I
- 30:52Speaker 1: will not let pain be my master. And think about
- 30:55Speaker 1: if pain, pain is a thing to you, like your
- 30:58Speaker 1: clothes or the the walls, Like pain is just another
- 31:02Speaker 1: thing that you need to be aware of. It's a
- 31:04Speaker 1: piece of knowledge that you have, but it doesn't tell
- 31:07Speaker 1: you what to do. That's the relationship you can have
- 31:10Speaker 1: with pain, like pain is just information to me. And
- 31:13Speaker 1: I'm not saying that I'm the terminator because I'm just
- 31:15Speaker 1: as cold and there as you are. But by doing
- 31:18Speaker 1: it every day and by changing my relationship with pain,
- 31:21Speaker 1: which you can, it's a belief that I have. You
- 31:23Speaker 1: can say I'm crazy, or you can say maybe I
- 31:25Speaker 1: want that belief. Maybe I can have that belief. You
- 31:28Speaker 1: can change your relationship to pain where it's simply information.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Okay, So I'm this is sort off you if I
- 31:35Speaker 2: look confused or I look like.
- 31:36Speaker 1: That because you got out of the ice bath, Nick,
- 31:38Speaker 1: and you felt electric.
- 31:39Speaker 2: I did feel that, right, But you.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Have software in your brain that said you don't want
- 31:42Speaker 1: to get in there.
- 31:44Speaker 3: Who's the liar?
- 31:46Speaker 2: I mean, strangely enough, I really did feel electrical. That
- 31:48Speaker 2: I felt like I was.
- 31:49Speaker 1: You felt better after, but you have software in your
- 31:52Speaker 1: brain that says, don't get in there.
- 31:53Speaker 2: Yeah, but that's exactly what starts. So when we're talking
- 31:56Speaker 2: about breaking the cycle of pain numbing, which I say
- 31:59Speaker 2: a lot of people are in and I want to
- 32:01Speaker 2: keep going back to this because I think what you're
- 32:04Speaker 2: if I'm understanding you correctly, by doing something physical every
- 32:08Speaker 2: single day, you're basically creating something so that when pain
- 32:11Speaker 2: comes in other areas of your life, there's not a
- 32:13Speaker 2: you know, it's not fight or flight. It's fight, it's
- 32:16Speaker 2: it's get right in there. It's face up to it,
- 32:18Speaker 2: understand what's happening. And when you don't tense and you relax.
- 32:21Speaker 2: I got to be honest, I am a little bit
- 32:23Speaker 2: disappointed with myself because I've read something that you wrote
- 32:26Speaker 2: once about whenever you were training for Buds, you used
- 32:29Speaker 2: to stay in the water so long that it got
- 32:32Speaker 2: past the point of I can't wait to get out
- 32:35Speaker 2: of here too. I could stay in here until I die.
- 32:37Speaker 2: And that's whenever you knew you could actually get out,
- 32:39Speaker 2: you wouldn't let yourself out until you kind.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Of yeah, I would stay there till I was blue
- 32:43Speaker 1: and I was next to the steps in my parents'.
- 32:45Speaker 3: Pool, and I basically like would barely crawl.
- 32:47Speaker 2: Out, but I wanted to get to that point.
- 32:51Speaker 3: I would take a long time.
- 32:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I can. We don't have that much. I don't
- 32:54Speaker 2: think i'd be able to sit here and talk with
- 32:56Speaker 2: you right now if that was the case. No, But
- 32:58Speaker 2: I the reason I say that is because once again,
- 33:00Speaker 2: this all ties back to relies what lies on the
- 33:03Speaker 2: other side. And you said it, Why wouldn't you go
- 33:05Speaker 2: through three to five minutes of pain every single day?
- 33:07Speaker 2: The reward is far greater than the pain.
- 33:10Speaker 1: And it's not for everybody. It all comes back to
- 33:13Speaker 1: why I'm living my life. We talked about it on
- 33:15Speaker 1: episode one, right, the greatest miss for me and my
- 33:18Speaker 1: life would not be would be not living up to
- 33:20Speaker 1: my full potential. And pain keeps people from their potential.
- 33:23Speaker 1: So I'm looking at the things that are my enemy,
- 33:26Speaker 1: pain being one of them. I'm not saying pain is
- 33:28Speaker 1: always wrong information. Pain is a great indicator when you're
- 33:31Speaker 1: holding a hot pain like I need to know like
- 33:33Speaker 1: this is burning my flesh. I'm not saying that all
- 33:36Speaker 1: pain is wrong information, but I don't want that information
- 33:39Speaker 1: to be my master. I'm looking at the things that
- 33:42Speaker 1: can keep me from reaching my full potential, and avoidance
- 33:46Speaker 1: of pain being one of them. So if I can
- 33:48Speaker 1: eliminate that which is within my control, I'm going to
- 33:51Speaker 1: do it.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Okay, So I want to really put something some handles,
- 33:54Speaker 2: as you say, on this for people who are listening,
- 33:56Speaker 2: because this is something that I'm going to put into
- 33:58Speaker 2: my own life as well. The very first thing is
- 34:00Speaker 2: you have to be aware of your pain, because I
- 34:03Speaker 2: think that's the crazy thing in our society is a
- 34:06Speaker 2: lot of times people have gotten into such a habit.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Like I talked about that cognitive behavior cycle, it happens
- 34:11Speaker 2: in a like a microsecond. You're not even aware of
- 34:14Speaker 2: you going. You know, oh, here's a circumstance, here's my thinking,
- 34:17Speaker 2: here's my emotions, here's my action. It happens like that
- 34:20Speaker 2: and it's over and you don't even think about it.
- 34:22Speaker 2: So you may not even be aware that you're avoiding
- 34:25Speaker 2: pain or that there is pain there because you're so
- 34:27Speaker 2: used to either numbing it. You know, might be with
- 34:29Speaker 2: a drink, it might be with whatever, I'm going to say,
- 34:31Speaker 2: a drink, because I think that's the most common form.
- 34:33Speaker 2: So the very first thing is you got to be
- 34:34Speaker 2: aware first of all, Right, like why am I doing
- 34:37Speaker 2: what I'm what I'm doing? Am I trying to cover
- 34:39Speaker 2: something up? So let's say that you've now become aware that, hey,
- 34:44Speaker 2: you know, smoking weed every night to help me deal
- 34:45Speaker 2: with this is probably avoiding something that needs to be
- 34:48Speaker 2: dealt with. So now I'm saying I'm aware of this,
- 34:51Speaker 2: where do they go? Because not everybody has an ice
- 34:53Speaker 2: bath like you do. Like, what's something practical that somebody
- 34:56Speaker 2: can start and do without any other equipment? Like would
- 35:00Speaker 2: you say to somebody that's like, hey, I'm aware I
- 35:01Speaker 2: have this pain, what do I do with it?
- 35:03Speaker 3: Yeah? I mean you can do a cold shower.
- 35:04Speaker 1: I mean that's not going to It doesn't have the
- 35:06Speaker 1: same effects, not the same degree of effects neurologically, not
- 35:10Speaker 1: the same degree of effects physiologically, but it will change
- 35:13Speaker 1: your state. It's uncomfortable, like and for most people, what
- 35:17Speaker 1: I wish you could have experienced is if we went
- 35:19Speaker 1: right out of the ice bath and we went you know,
- 35:21Speaker 1: you were at your house and you got in your shower,
- 35:23Speaker 1: which at home, when you get in the shower it's cold.
- 35:25Speaker 1: If you had got in the shower right after the
- 35:27Speaker 1: ice bath, you just said, like, man, this feels warm,
- 35:29Speaker 1: because it actually would feel warm. Different conversation, but just
- 35:33Speaker 1: the thought for you. But if we're you as a listener,
- 35:36Speaker 1: if you're saying like I don't have an ice bath,
- 35:37Speaker 1: and maybe we'll do a post about the deep reason
- 35:40Speaker 1: I have because my total costs were around one thousand dollars.
- 35:43Speaker 1: There's other more expensive ways. But if we're looking for
- 35:46Speaker 1: a way for you to put down whatever the substance
- 35:50Speaker 1: is for a state change, and you're looking for a
- 35:52Speaker 1: different way to change your state, a cold shower is
- 35:54Speaker 1: going to achieve that.
- 35:55Speaker 2: But what an analogy you just gave. I don't know
- 35:58Speaker 2: if you meant to give this, but if the shower
- 36:01Speaker 2: for most people, if you flip it to cold, you're like,
- 36:03Speaker 2: oh my gosh, just get it hot. Like I know
- 36:05Speaker 2: people myself, my wife, we will turn the shower on
- 36:08Speaker 2: and let it get hot before we even go in. Sure, now,
- 36:10Speaker 2: because I hang around with you, now I have started
- 36:12Speaker 2: just putting the cold water on straight away. I hope
- 36:14Speaker 2: you respect me more and realize how tough I am
- 36:16Speaker 2: to stand there.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Maybe I'm just maybe I really am just a crazy person.
- 36:20Speaker 1: But I want to live a life where I can
- 36:22Speaker 1: enjoy comfort, right Like I love nice things. I like
- 36:25Speaker 1: going to the Ritz Carlton in four Seasons. There's nothing
- 36:28Speaker 1: wrong with that. But you can put me in the
- 36:30Speaker 1: middle of the Sahara and I'm going to keep living
- 36:32Speaker 1: the exact same life. Right That's a choice that I've
- 36:35Speaker 1: made for the type of life that I want to live,
- 36:37Speaker 1: not I can only live a good life when I'm
- 36:40Speaker 1: at the four seasons metaphorically or physically, Like by changing
- 36:44Speaker 1: my relationship with pain, I get to live the life
- 36:47Speaker 1: that I want to live, whether I have air conditioning
- 36:49Speaker 1: or I don't have air conditioning, whether the power is
- 36:52Speaker 1: on or I don't have power.
- 36:54Speaker 3: That is the.
- 36:55Speaker 1: Power that comes from changing your relationship with pain. And
- 36:58Speaker 1: what Nick is his eyes are opening wider about right
- 37:02Speaker 1: now is the perspective change that I gave him on
- 37:05Speaker 1: the ice bath versus your cold shower. I think we
- 37:08Speaker 1: talked about this in episode one or two. Maybe we didn't,
- 37:11Speaker 1: and it's just my memories off. But for me, the
- 37:15Speaker 1: ice baths in the pool that I used to do
- 37:17Speaker 1: for forty five to fifty minutes was a perspective power
- 37:20Speaker 1: that I got going into buds, right because I spent
- 37:23Speaker 1: more time. I spent longer time in colder water than
- 37:26Speaker 1: you do as a student going through seal training, and
- 37:28Speaker 1: so when I got there in seal training, I was like, Hey,
- 37:30Speaker 1: the Saints so bad, right, I've spent longer time in
- 37:33Speaker 1: colder water. And that's as we were going into Hell
- 37:36Speaker 1: Week in my class, and every class gets this. We
- 37:39Speaker 1: had a seal come and talk to us Sunday night
- 37:43Speaker 1: before Hell Week, and he gave a perspective story from
- 37:46Speaker 1: a very intense combat situation that he was in. Multiple
- 37:50Speaker 1: members of his team got shot, he got shot. Everyone
- 37:53Speaker 1: could have died that day. Everyone could have rolled over
- 37:56Speaker 1: and accepted death, but they didn't. They chose life, chose
- 38:00Speaker 1: to fight. And he told the story of that fight
- 38:04Speaker 1: and talked about remembering. He was saying, I remember when
- 38:07Speaker 1: I was in Hell Week and we had to stay
- 38:08Speaker 1: awake for five days. And now as I'm bleeding out
- 38:11Speaker 1: and I'm in a helicopter on my way to the hospital,
- 38:14Speaker 1: I know if I can just stay awake for the
- 38:16Speaker 1: next thirty minutes and make it to the hospital, that
- 38:18Speaker 1: I won't die. And if I pass out in this
- 38:21Speaker 1: helicopter right now, as I'm bleeding out, I know I'll die,
- 38:24Speaker 1: And he said, I stayed awake for five days in
- 38:26Speaker 1: hell week, so I can stay awake for the next
- 38:28Speaker 1: thirty minutes. And it is very hard to stay awake
- 38:31Speaker 1: when you are massively hemorrhaging blood.
- 38:33Speaker 3: But he did it.
- 38:34Speaker 1: That's a perspective power story, and so you can again,
- 38:38Speaker 1: you can say, you know what, I'm just weak. I
- 38:40Speaker 1: want to roll over, and I'm not insulting you as
- 38:42Speaker 1: a listener by calling you weak for not choosing your pain.
- 38:45Speaker 1: You can see it that way or you cannot, Or
- 38:47Speaker 1: you can say I want all of the life that
- 38:49Speaker 1: I want to live. That's what this podcast is about.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Do you want to live the quote unquote impossible life?
- 38:55Speaker 1: Do you want to push beyond the limit and the
- 38:57Speaker 1: lines that you've created for yourself that you call and possible.
- 39:00Speaker 1: If you want that, you need to change your relationship
- 39:02Speaker 1: with pain. That's one of the limiting factors of life
- 39:05Speaker 1: that's within your control. There's so many things that are
- 39:07Speaker 1: outside our control, but your relationship with pain is within
- 39:11Speaker 1: your control. When you change your relationship with pain, you
- 39:14Speaker 1: can get perspective power on lesser pains in your life,
- 39:17Speaker 1: and you can walk over hot coals so to speak,
- 39:20Speaker 1: a subtle nod to Tony Robbins. You can walk over
- 39:23Speaker 1: hot coals, so to speak, where other people's feet might
- 39:26Speaker 1: be burning, you can continue walking. And that's what I
- 39:29Speaker 1: want out of my life. I want to be able
- 39:31Speaker 1: to walk over hot coals. I want to be able
- 39:33Speaker 1: to endure ice water and not be shivering and shaking
- 39:37Speaker 1: and wondering why my life is in such a miserable position.
- 39:40Speaker 1: I just want to be mission focused. I want to
- 39:42Speaker 1: know where I'm going and what I'm doing, and I
- 39:43Speaker 1: don't care if it's raining or not.
- 39:45Speaker 2: Man, And that's exactly the analogia. You said it way
- 39:48Speaker 2: better than I was. If if you've been in a
- 39:50Speaker 2: cold tank of water like we were for forty degrees
- 39:53Speaker 2: and you've put yourself through that, when you get in
- 39:55Speaker 2: the shower, I mean, the shower water at cold might
- 39:57Speaker 2: be like sixty six. I'm just guessing, no idea, but
- 40:00Speaker 2: it feels it's going to feel like a hot spring
- 40:03Speaker 2: because of comparative. And that's the strengthest the power of this.
- 40:06Speaker 2: And that's exactly what you said when you were making that,
- 40:08Speaker 2: And that's the light bulb that you saw going over
- 40:10Speaker 2: my head. Is that if you're basically building a pain
- 40:13Speaker 2: tolerance and a pain muscle for lack of you know,
- 40:15Speaker 2: I feel like building mule.
- 40:17Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not pain tolerance, you would call it that.
- 40:19Speaker 1: But if you remember when we talked about practicing not quitting, right,
- 40:23Speaker 1: it's I wasn't practicing, you know, being able to run
- 40:26Speaker 1: four miles in whatever time. It was practicing not quitting.
- 40:29Speaker 1: And so with the pain, it's practicing pain because pain
- 40:33Speaker 1: doesn't get like like.
- 40:34Speaker 3: I said, I'm justice.
- 40:35Speaker 1: My body temperature is the same as it was last year, right,
- 40:39Speaker 1: But my personal engagement, how I feel about the pain
- 40:43Speaker 1: in my mind and in my heart, that's what's changing.
- 40:47Speaker 3: Man.
- 40:47Speaker 2: I think that's just a perfect way to wrap up.
- 40:50Speaker 2: So I want to go back and give the listeners
- 40:52Speaker 2: challenges like we do. So I would say the very
- 40:54Speaker 2: first challenges you have to become aware of your pain,
- 40:57Speaker 2: and you talked about pain being your mind. So I
- 41:00Speaker 2: would say the very first challenge to listeners is look
- 41:02Speaker 2: at yourself and acknowledge and ask yourself the question, has
- 41:05Speaker 2: pain been your master? Have you allowed the pain of
- 41:08Speaker 2: potential failure or the pain of having to face something
- 41:11Speaker 2: that you don't want to to keep you from being
- 41:13Speaker 2: your absolute best and living your maximized life.
- 41:16Speaker 1: It's kind of like a famous song. You can serve
- 41:19Speaker 1: the devil or you can serve the lord, but you've
- 41:21Speaker 1: got to serve somebody.
- 41:22Speaker 3: Well.
- 41:23Speaker 1: You have a relationship with pain. Either pain rules you
- 41:26Speaker 1: or you rule your pain. If you are not someone
- 41:28Speaker 1: who rules your pain, then you are someone that pain
- 41:31Speaker 1: rules you. And if you want what we're talking about
- 41:33Speaker 1: and you realize that you are not the one ruling
- 41:35Speaker 1: your pain, become aware right now and know that you
- 41:38Speaker 1: should change it.
- 41:40Speaker 2: Yeah, And I would say the second thing as part
- 41:42Speaker 2: of that challenge is what is one hard or painful
- 41:45Speaker 2: thing that you can start doing every day right now?
- 41:48Speaker 2: You may not have Garrett touched on the cold shower.
- 41:51Speaker 2: Could you get some ice and fill up your bath?
- 41:53Speaker 2: I don't know we're going to use. We're going with
- 41:55Speaker 2: obvious examples of things that we've done, but there's plenty
- 41:57Speaker 2: of ways.
- 41:57Speaker 1: There's a lot of hard things in your life that
- 41:59Speaker 1: you can show to do every day. Ice bath is
- 42:02Speaker 1: one of them, or just working out. And you don't
- 42:04Speaker 1: have to start with an ice bath, because I would
- 42:06Speaker 1: tell you that it's a difficult challenge, but begin And
- 42:09Speaker 1: these are things that I heard early in my life.
- 42:11Speaker 1: There are a lot of great, very accomplished, very successful
- 42:14Speaker 1: people that will tell you to do one hard thing
- 42:16Speaker 1: every day, So start there.
- 42:18Speaker 3: It does.
- 42:19Speaker 1: That hard thing doesn't have to be the ice bath,
- 42:21Speaker 1: but force yourself to be uncomfortable every day.
- 42:24Speaker 3: There you go.
- 42:25Speaker 2: Guys, if you want to step up and you want
- 42:27Speaker 2: to empower yourself, make yourself the master of pain rather
- 42:30Speaker 2: than align pain to be your master. Thank you very
- 42:34Speaker 2: much for listening. Guys, remember to share, like subscribe. If
