- 1:46Speaker 2: welcome to a very special episode here of Four Finger Discount.
- 1:49Speaker 2: It is Halloween time, the spooky season is upon us,
- 1:51Speaker 2: and today we've got a very special episode. As I said,
- 1:53Speaker 2: we're going to be running through the top 10 episodes,
- 1:56Speaker 2: or top 10 segments of Treehouse of Horror, and I'm
- 1:58Speaker 2: lucky to be doing this with the man himself. It's
- 2:00Speaker 2: Neil Arcenti from On This Day in Simpsons History. How
- 2:02Speaker 2: are you doing, sir?
- 2:03Speaker 1: Hey, I'm doing all right. Great to be here. Thanks
- 2:06Speaker 1: for inviting me, Brent.
- 2:07Speaker 2: No problem. We were just talking about dad life, weren't we,
- 2:10Speaker 2: and how it's hard to get things done when you've
- 2:11Speaker 2: got kids. We love our kids, but we're just talking
- 2:13Speaker 2: about how when I started this I had no kids.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I was bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, newlywed, you know, full of energy.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Now I'm a dad with an eight-year-old, a six-year-old. I've
- 2:22Speaker 2: got shingles because I'm tired. How are you doing?
- 2:26Speaker 1: I'm doing good. I mean, I was going to mention, like,
- 2:30Speaker 1: I think we're at that point now in our dad
- 2:34Speaker 1: life where we're starting to incorporate our kids more in
- 2:37Speaker 1: our day-to-day meeting or our fun stuff too, you know,
- 2:40Speaker 1: because I saw that you were doing– how your kids
- 2:43Speaker 1: are reacting to Simpsons episodes. And I think I started
- 2:47Speaker 1: bringing my son to do trivia with me in Chicago,
- 2:50Speaker 1: like a couple of years ago. And yeah, it's really
- 2:53Speaker 1: cool because he's not, he's not, um, I mean, he's still,
- 2:58Speaker 1: you know, he can't read all the questions, right. If
- 3:03Speaker 1: we had him read all the questions, we'd be there
- 3:05Speaker 1: until like midnight. But, uh, I just have him read, hey,
- 3:10Speaker 1: say question one. Question one. You know, question two. And
- 3:13Speaker 1: he just loves it because he loves talking to the mic. And,
- 3:16Speaker 1: you know, it's just a fun thing. And it's at
- 3:19Speaker 1: a pizza place. So he loves pizza. I guess the
- 3:23Speaker 1: only downside is that it's three hours. So it's a
- 3:28Speaker 1: three-hour trivia night. And so he will get tired because
- 3:33Speaker 1: it's on a school night, too. So... I don't bring
- 3:36Speaker 1: them every time I bring them on the, uh, usually
- 3:40Speaker 1: the less busier ones, which are in, uh, February because
- 3:45Speaker 1: it's cold. And then in August, cause there's nothing, you know,
- 3:48Speaker 1: nothing big around. So yeah, those are the fun ones.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Does he get dressed up? Does he do the costumes?
- 3:53Speaker 1: Well, he, uh, no. So he won't do the costumes. Uh,
- 3:57Speaker 1: I'm not going to bring them to the costume contest,
- 4:00Speaker 1: but yeah, so he hasn't, he hasn't, donna simpson's costume
- 4:05Speaker 1: yet but um did say that this year for halloween
- 4:09Speaker 1: you're gonna dress up as bugs bunny which i thought
- 4:12Speaker 1: okay was amazing because it's not like k-pop demon hunter
- 4:16Speaker 1: or anything like that i'm like i don't know what
- 4:18Speaker 1: that is i don't know why you want to do
- 4:19Speaker 1: it okay i don't know what it is.
- 4:21Speaker 2: My kids tried to get into k-pop although they liked
- 4:23Speaker 2: it they did they got into it but i was
- 4:24Speaker 2: just going to them you do realize that in three
- 4:27Speaker 2: months no one's gonna care about this No one's going.
- 4:30Speaker 1: To care about this.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Like, we just want to watch it. Fine. You can
- 4:35Speaker 2: watch it. And they watch it. And now I'll go,
- 4:37Speaker 2: do you want to put the K-pop on? Yeah, no
- 4:39Speaker 2: one watches that anymore. I'm like, what did I tell you? Yeah.
- 4:45Speaker 2: I just feel like so many things that like... what
- 4:47Speaker 2: young people watch now don't have the staying power of
- 4:49Speaker 2: say like a Looney Tunes or a Simpsons. You know
- 4:52Speaker 2: what I mean?
- 4:52Speaker 1: For sure. It's been around. Yeah. All that stuff's been
- 4:55Speaker 1: around for so long. And I think it just has
- 4:57Speaker 1: that generational thing because it's lasted so long. It has
- 5:01Speaker 1: that generational thing. you know, thing that brings parents and
- 5:06Speaker 1: grandparents and kids together. And it's, you know, that's amazing.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And thank goodness The Simpsons is part of that. I
- 5:13Speaker 1: realized that The Simpsons, that's why it's still on, right?
- 5:17Speaker 1: I think that's it. It's that Looney Tunes, they keep making,
- 5:21Speaker 1: they're still making, well, they were a few years ago
- 5:24Speaker 1: making new Looney Tunes because it's an intellectual property. But
- 5:27Speaker 1: they know that there's that established history already. Because people
- 5:30Speaker 1: are arguing, you know, they'll argue until the cows come home. Like,
- 5:34Speaker 1: what's the point of new episodes? Nobody watches them, blah, blah, blah.
- 5:37Speaker 1: But it's not even that. It's like they know it's
- 5:41Speaker 1: a cultural institution. And it's just something that will always
- 5:47Speaker 1: have drawing power.
- 5:49Speaker 2: If they had a camera, if there could be a
- 5:51Speaker 2: fly on the wall in our house yesterday, my kids
- 5:54Speaker 2: were so genuinely excited because in Australia, you guys get
- 5:57Speaker 2: New Simpsons on the Sunday and it comes on Disney
- 6:00Speaker 2: Plus on the Wednesday here. So we get it three
- 6:03Speaker 2: days late, but it's pretty up to date. It's the
- 6:05Speaker 2: most up to date it's ever been, really. My kids
- 6:07Speaker 2: were so excited. They put on Disney Plus. Dad, there's
- 6:09Speaker 2: a new Simpsons. And I was like, oh, my heart.
- 6:12Speaker 1: That's so awesome.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Isn't that great?
- 6:14Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh, it's great.
- 6:16Speaker 2: And they watched new ones. And do you hear them
- 6:18Speaker 2: complaining that it's not funny? Do you hear them complaining
- 6:20Speaker 2: that the voice actors don't sound the same? Now, my son,
- 6:23Speaker 2: I will say, my son did point out, Marge doesn't
- 6:26Speaker 2: quite sound the same anymore. I'm like, yeah, just because
- 6:28Speaker 2: she's older. And he was like, oh, okay. You didn't care.
- 6:30Speaker 1: You didn't care. Yeah. Who cares? As long as they,
- 6:34Speaker 1: you know, I mean, obviously they're still good. And obviously,
- 6:37Speaker 1: you know, they've got top writers on it. And so
- 6:41Speaker 1: I stopped, you know, arguing about it years ago because
- 6:46Speaker 1: I was like, people are still enjoying it.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I do feel like the Simpsons isn't good anymore argument
- 6:52Speaker 2: has kind of died now. I feel like the ones
- 6:54Speaker 2: that were really, you know, the keyboard warriors, as we
- 6:57Speaker 2: like to call them, who would constantly... Any post that
- 6:59Speaker 2: we put out that was in relation to modern Simpsons,
- 7:01Speaker 2: it was just, oh, they should have cancelled this 20
- 7:03Speaker 2: years ago. They seem to have just... They've fizzled out.
- 7:06Speaker 2: They've either given up because... The Simpsons just won't die.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Or they'll just realize, what's the point? You know, like, yeah,
- 7:12Speaker 2: people enjoy it. Let them enjoy it.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Who cares? God, relax. There's other things in life.
- 7:18Speaker 2: The Simpsons has kind of had a resurgence in like
- 7:20Speaker 2: the last couple of years, I find.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:22Speaker 2: For two main reasons, in my opinion. A, I think
- 7:24Speaker 2: it's just genuinely actually just gotten better.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:26Speaker 2: I think since Matt's taken over full time and I
- 7:28Speaker 2: think they've got a new fresh batch of writers in
- 7:30Speaker 2: with some new perspectives. But I think just having it
- 7:33Speaker 2: on Disney Plus and Our generation. How old are you?
- 7:37Speaker 2: You'd be, what, late 30s?
- 7:39Speaker 1: No. Thank you for saying that, though. I just turned 47. Okay.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Well, we're similar-ish in age, right? Yeah. Same generation. Yeah,
- 7:49Speaker 2: it is. We're now showing our kids The Simpsons as
- 7:52Speaker 2: a result. And because we're going on Disney +, and
- 7:54Speaker 2: it's so easily accessible now, just go, hey, Disney +,
- 7:56Speaker 2: put it on. Our kids are now watching, which means
- 7:59Speaker 2: more people are now enjoying it. There's now two generations
- 8:01Speaker 2: who are really, we loved the show as a kid.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Our parents, I wouldn't say our parents really, it wasn't
- 8:05Speaker 2: really their show, it was our show, but now we've
- 8:07Speaker 2: passed the show on to our kids. But also, I
- 8:09Speaker 2: just feel like Disney's finally realized, because 20th Century Fox
- 8:12Speaker 2: really dropped the ball in this regard. I feel like
- 8:14Speaker 2: Disney's gone, you know what? The Simpsons is a product
- 8:16Speaker 2: that you can really merchandise. And for like, it felt
- 8:18Speaker 2: like the longest time, there wasn't any good Simpsons merch yet. Now,
- 8:22Speaker 2: everywhere you look, there's just Simpsons merch.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Yeah. And like the deepest references and like so many,
- 8:28Speaker 1: so many different things you can get now. I feel
- 8:30Speaker 1: like people are like, we should make this, we should
- 8:32Speaker 1: make this.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Okay you know let's just make it so yeah so
- 8:36Speaker 1: you'll get somebody like uh yeah i think they just
- 8:40Speaker 1: they just know the market's there and the more heat
- 8:42Speaker 1: cut you get i think the more people will just
- 8:44Speaker 1: buy the stuff so.
- 8:45Speaker 2: I've got you i've got you here today though we're
- 8:47Speaker 2: going to run through you're going to run through your
- 8:48Speaker 2: top five treehouse of forest segments i'm going to run
- 8:51Speaker 2: through my top five but The reason I thought it'd
- 8:53Speaker 2: be something fun to do, A, it's Halloween time.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:55Speaker 2: But B, obviously, are you going to be doing a
- 8:57Speaker 2: costume contest for the upcoming trivia, October 26th?
- 8:59Speaker 1: Yes. And it's harder. Talk about niche costumes. It's harder
- 9:05Speaker 1: and harder for people to do them every year because...
- 9:08Speaker 1: I mean, we've been posting them every day on the
- 9:12Speaker 1: WooHoo Trivia Shy Instagram. There are just so many different
- 9:17Speaker 1: references and different niche, very specific jokes that people have
- 9:23Speaker 1: done that it's so hard for people to come up
- 9:25Speaker 1: with new ones that haven't already been done. I mean,
- 9:28Speaker 1: it's that George Harrison meme, right? It's been done. It's like, oh, God.
- 9:32Speaker 2: I mean.
- 9:34Speaker 1: I think the best ones have been– one that I
- 9:38Speaker 1: just posted was Diablo Canyon 1 and Diablo Canyon 2.
- 9:43Speaker 2: The two lights, yes. That is as niche as it gets,
- 9:45Speaker 2: I think.
- 9:46Speaker 1: The very clever part of that was that they actually
- 9:50Speaker 1: had one lit light bulb on.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 9:54Speaker 1: And the other one was not lit. And then their
- 9:57Speaker 1: shirt said Diablo Academy 1, the other one Diablo Academy 2.
- 10:00Speaker 1: And I'm like, that's a pretty niche thing. So now
- 10:05Speaker 1: it's like.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Bart on the road, right?
- 10:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's Bart on the road.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Homer's bored at work and Lisa's not there.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. And that one, people are like, oh my God,
- 10:17Speaker 1: it's so.
- 10:18Speaker 2: I personally love the purple monkey dishwasher.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Yes. Well, that's clever too because it's like something you've
- 10:24Speaker 1: never seen, but you get exactly what he's doing. You
- 10:28Speaker 1: know exactly what that is, even though you've never even
- 10:32Speaker 1: seen what a purple monkey dishwasher looks like.
- 10:36Speaker 2: I love that joke so much that when I was,
- 10:38Speaker 2: you know, back in the MSN, MySpace days, my email
- 10:41Speaker 2: was purplemonkeydishwasher at homeout.com.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Perfect. Yeah, that's exactly right. And so I think that
- 10:48Speaker 1: those ones score... big points when you take people by
- 10:53Speaker 1: surprise by that. Obviously, if you're really crafty, there's one
- 10:59Speaker 1: that somebody dressed up as disgruntled goats and the costume
- 11:03Speaker 1: quality was like theme park quality costume it's like it's
- 11:10Speaker 1: something that like this guy knew what he was doing
- 11:14Speaker 1: and the fact that it looked so good it looked
- 11:16Speaker 1: like something you'd probably see at an Itchy and Scratchy
- 11:20Speaker 1: Land you know because it's so well done and he
- 11:24Speaker 1: did another one another year who ended up winning too
- 11:26Speaker 1: because it He just ended up, you know, he knew
- 11:29Speaker 1: how to make a costume. And so I think after
- 11:31Speaker 1: the second time we won and he's like, okay, I'm
- 11:33Speaker 1: done making costumes. Sorry. I won't, I won't, I won't
- 11:37Speaker 1: steal these things because he knew.
- 11:39Speaker 2: People stop coming. We give up.
- 11:41Speaker 1: This guy is so impressionable. He knows what he's doing.
- 11:44Speaker 2: We had someone in Australia, in Adelaide. She had a
- 11:48Speaker 2: 40th birthday recently. I was in March. It was Simpsons
- 11:51Speaker 2: themed and we posted, she sent us photos to share
- 11:53Speaker 2: and we sent photos of them. But, a couple rocked
- 11:55Speaker 2: up as the itchy and scratchy robots and man, they
- 12:00Speaker 2: looked unbelievable. And like just she, this woman, she turned
- 12:03Speaker 2: her entire house into Springfield basically and had all the
- 12:07Speaker 2: various foods and, It's like my dream to have a
- 12:09Speaker 2: Simpsons theme party. I'd love to do that.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure. And to invite people who would get
- 12:15Speaker 1: all the references too.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 12:17Speaker 1: We had those once in a while. Back in the
- 12:20Speaker 1: peak point in the mid-2010s when we did Simpsons Trivia
- 12:25Speaker 1: in Chicago, we had box socials once in a while. Yeah,
- 12:31Speaker 1: I did see those.
- 12:31Speaker 2: They were good.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Yeah, the people who... Also, you know, they went to
- 12:35Speaker 1: trivia and then they would box socials were meant to
- 12:37Speaker 1: be like, oh, there's no trivia. We're just going to
- 12:40Speaker 1: sit and talk and get to know each other. So
- 12:43Speaker 1: that was fun. We did that, I don't know, two
- 12:46Speaker 1: or three times. But yeah, that's the same kind of thing, right?
- 12:49Speaker 1: Where it's like, oh, let's get to know each other
- 12:51Speaker 1: in a situation where we're not just angry at each
- 12:55Speaker 1: other for... getting a right question or a wrong question
- 12:59Speaker 1: or very competitive or anything.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Have you ever gotten a question wrong yourself that you've
- 13:04Speaker 2: asked and gone, oh, wait a minute, the answer I've
- 13:06Speaker 2: given out is actually wrong?
- 13:07Speaker 1: Yes. Oh, man. I wish I could think of one
- 13:10Speaker 1: off the top of my head, but man. It's bad
- 13:14Speaker 1: news when you get it wrong, especially if the answer
- 13:20Speaker 1: that I had was like, it's usually something that's very
- 13:24Speaker 1: close to the correct answer. And people will not only
- 13:27Speaker 1: be angry at the fact that I had the wrong answer,
- 13:30Speaker 1: but they will be angry that they got, you know,
- 13:34Speaker 1: they were marked wrong. And then I'm like, do you
- 13:37Speaker 1: realize I have... Right now at my arsenal, I have
- 13:41Speaker 1: like 3,000 questions, right? And they're already... It's 50 questions.
- 13:47Speaker 1: It's like from easy to hard. And even in the
- 13:51Speaker 1: first round, the questions are like already... You already know
- 13:54Speaker 1: it's going to be incredibly difficult. But yeah, it's definitely
- 13:58Speaker 1: not been fun when I have the answer wrong. Because...
- 14:09Speaker 1: now it's at the point though it's like oh it's
- 14:11Speaker 1: just interesting because people would really like 10 years the
- 14:14Speaker 1: fact that i've been doing this for 14 years which
- 14:17Speaker 1: is as long as i've been doing it it's been
- 14:19Speaker 1: similar to where i think simpsons fandom is where it
- 14:23Speaker 1: was like there were people who are very serious about
- 14:25Speaker 1: it the first few years at simpsons trivia and now
- 14:28Speaker 1: they're like hey, that's the wrong answer or whatever. I'll
- 14:34Speaker 1: be like, I'm so sorry. And they're like, oh, Simpsons
- 14:38Speaker 1: reference or whatever. Ha, ha, ha. We all laugh about it.
- 14:40Speaker 1: And it's like, you know, it's all lighthearted.
- 14:42Speaker 2: It's my first day.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Yeah, it's my first day and people will laugh and,
- 14:46Speaker 1: you know, yeah, people don't take it as seriously as much.
- 14:49Speaker 1: So it's good.
- 14:50Speaker 2: I remember we were putting together, this would be a
- 14:52Speaker 2: guy on a Seinfeld fan page. We had like a
- 14:54Speaker 2: Worlds are Colliding Seinfeld Simpsons Trivia Night. We were putting
- 14:57Speaker 2: it together.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:57Speaker 2: I remember we were setting it up and running through
- 14:59Speaker 2: the questions. And one of the questions that he'd written
- 15:01Speaker 2: for The Simpsons was, what's the name of the play
- 15:04Speaker 2: that Troy McClure stars in? And he just had Planet
- 15:08Speaker 2: of the Apes. Oh, yeah. I said, people aren't going
- 15:11Speaker 2: to be happy with this. It stopped the Planet of
- 15:12Speaker 2: the Apes. I want to get off. And he was like, no,
- 15:14Speaker 2: it's people. He goes, people will know what I mean.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Planet of the Apes is fine. I'm like, I don't
- 15:19Speaker 2: think they will. And he was like, whatever. And I
- 15:21Speaker 2: was like, I'm telling you. I'm telling you.
- 15:25Speaker 1: It's true. And I try to cover my ass knowing
- 15:28Speaker 1: I've had experience with that. I try to cover my
- 15:31Speaker 1: ass when I ask the question because I'm like, now,
- 15:35Speaker 1: in that case, I would be like, what's the name
- 15:38Speaker 1: of the play that Troy McClure was in? And I'll
- 15:40Speaker 1: be like, Keeping in mind that it is a parody
- 15:45Speaker 1: of something. The name of the play is not the parody.
- 15:47Speaker 1: The name of the play is something specific. You have
- 15:50Speaker 1: to be a specific.
- 15:51Speaker 2: I need that answer.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Yeah. And some people will be like, oh man, what
- 15:55Speaker 1: is it? So.
- 15:57Speaker 2: We went to a Simpsons trivia night about, I don't know,
- 15:59Speaker 2: six months ago now. And it was so obvious that
- 16:02Speaker 2: the venue had just AI'd Simpsons questions, like in chat GPT.
- 16:07Speaker 2: And like the host, the host asked the question, it
- 16:10Speaker 2: was like, what is the name of Bart's pet rat?
- 16:13Speaker 2: And I'm like, what the fuck? Pet rat? I looked
- 16:18Speaker 2: at Nicola and Nicola's like, I don't watch The Simpsons.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Or my wife doesn't really watch The Simpsons. I looked
- 16:21Speaker 2: at my mates who were there and they're like, pet rat?
- 16:23Speaker 2: And it was like, it came back as some random,
- 16:24Speaker 2: it was like, rat boy. And I was like, hang
- 16:26Speaker 2: on a minute. AI, you've completely messed this up. And
- 16:30Speaker 2: then the host is like, hey, I didn't write the questions.
- 16:32Speaker 2: I'm just asking them. I'm like, you've charged me entry
- 16:34Speaker 2: for this though, sir.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a different thing. If you've charged for entry,
- 16:39Speaker 1: that's a big, you know, people are going to expect height,
- 16:42Speaker 1: you know.
- 16:42Speaker 2: But just the, what is the name of Bart's pet rat?
- 16:44Speaker 2: And everyone is in a round, you hear everyone in
- 16:46Speaker 2: the room just go.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Pet rat? Oh, my God. That's terrible.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Yeah, anyway. But you won't be doing that. That's a course. So, yeah,
- 16:54Speaker 2: October 26th. Where can we get tickets for your trivia night?
- 16:57Speaker 1: So, you'll just get them. It's right at the door.
- 16:59Speaker 1: And people will be turned away if you don't get
- 17:03Speaker 1: there early enough. So, doors will open at 6. The
- 17:05Speaker 1: trivia starts at 7. And get there early. Venue? It's
- 17:10Speaker 1: at Pizzeria Cereo, which is at Belmont. I'll just say
- 17:15Speaker 1: Belmont and Polina. 1708 West Belmont in Chicago. And yeah,
- 17:21Speaker 1: it's get there early because I think last year we
- 17:24Speaker 1: did end up turning people away and they were dressed
- 17:27Speaker 1: in costume.
- 17:29Speaker 2: So you can't pre-book tickets?
- 17:31Speaker 1: No. You can't pre-book tickets because it's a restaurant. Yeah,
- 17:35Speaker 1: it's two floors. It's a big venue, and it's two floors,
- 17:40Speaker 1: but it's all just seating at a table.
- 17:43Speaker 2: How do you tell people who are dressed up in costumes, sorry.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Well, thank God I didn't have to be the person
- 17:49Speaker 1: to tell them. It was the host that told them
- 17:51Speaker 1: because I went downstairs and they're like, you're just changing
- 17:54Speaker 1: people away. And I was like, really? There's no spaces? Like,
- 17:58Speaker 1: fire code? It's like one of those things that's like,
- 18:01Speaker 1: we can't let any more people in. I looked out
- 18:03Speaker 1: the window or out the door and sure enough, people
- 18:05Speaker 1: in costume were like.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Maybe you need a doubleheader. Maybe you need two nights.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe we need two nights on a Halloween night, man.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Is it only the Halloween nights that you do the
- 18:15Speaker 2: costume contest?
- 18:16Speaker 3: Yes.
- 18:17Speaker 1: So there's only two nights that are like special, although
- 18:21Speaker 1: I may start doing Simpsons karaoke. But that's a whole
- 18:25Speaker 1: other thing.
- 18:26Speaker 2: We had a guy at our trivia nights we used
- 18:27Speaker 2: to do several years ago. We used to have a guy.
- 18:29Speaker 2: His name was Bodes and he used to play Simpsons
- 18:31Speaker 2: songs live on the acoustic guitar. And man, the sing-along,
- 18:34Speaker 2: he played in between rounds and the sing-alongs were so
- 18:36Speaker 2: much fun.
- 18:37Speaker 1: So much. People love sing-along too. It's like, I tested
- 18:40Speaker 1: it out. I was like, I'm thinking of, I did
- 18:43Speaker 1: like one video. Cause I, you know, I made my
- 18:45Speaker 1: own like karaoke video. Cause it's really, there's like no
- 18:48Speaker 1: Simpsons karaoke videos out there. Right. So you have to
- 18:50Speaker 1: like take clips from the episode and like put lyrics
- 18:54Speaker 1: over them. I was like, this is what I'm thinking
- 18:56Speaker 1: of doing guys. What do you think? And I, I
- 18:58Speaker 1: pressed play and I think it was, um, I think
- 19:01Speaker 1: it was Stop Playing the Age I Want to Get Off.
- 19:03Speaker 1: I think I played a clip from that. And people
- 19:07Speaker 1: just started singing along right away. And it was like, see,
- 19:09Speaker 1: this is like people, people will just love, people just love,
- 19:14Speaker 1: you know, and it's not, it wouldn't even be just that.
- 19:16Speaker 1: It would be scenes. They do that in South America, actually.
- 19:20Speaker 1: There's a company that goes like, around like i think
- 19:24Speaker 1: columbia that just goes bar to bar and does the
- 19:26Speaker 1: simpson scenes where you can do karaoke with them it's
- 19:28Speaker 1: crazy that's where i got the idea from was um
- 19:31Speaker 1: i saw it on instagram yeah but they're uh in
- 19:35Speaker 1: may we do diorama rama and then in october we'll
- 19:38Speaker 1: do the costume content so.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Okay perfect yeah because bones he used to play the
- 19:42Speaker 2: monorail song and he played the role of Lyle Landley
- 19:44Speaker 2: and the crowd would be the crowd, you know? Yeah, yeah.
- 19:47Speaker 2: So good.
- 19:47Speaker 1: It's perfect, yeah, exactly.
- 19:49Speaker 2: And there's always one person who would be like, mano, do,
- 19:52Speaker 2: at the end, you're like, yes!
- 19:55Speaker 1: It's something where everybody's like, yeah!
- 19:57Speaker 2: Yes, all right. But let's get into our top five
- 20:00Speaker 2: Treehouse of Horror segments. What does Treehouse of Horror mean
- 20:02Speaker 2: to you when you think of Treehouse of Horror?
- 20:04Speaker 1: I mean, it's funny because I think it's awesome because
- 20:08Speaker 1: it's their excuse to like just go anywhere they want to.
- 20:12Speaker 1: You know, even like the early ones were just horror.
- 20:15Speaker 1: But I mean, when they started in science fiction, they
- 20:18Speaker 1: realized they could do pop culture references that aren't necessarily
- 20:24Speaker 1: even horror related. They can just put them in that
- 20:27Speaker 1: kind of. segment like where it was like one of
- 20:30Speaker 1: my top fives is actually uh citizen kang which is
- 20:34Speaker 1: more a reference to uh the 1996 presidential presidential election
- 20:39Speaker 1: than anything it was just like an alien story they
- 20:42Speaker 1: put in that but that was political humor in the
- 20:44Speaker 1: guise of like this big alien story um but yeah
- 20:48Speaker 1: i think it's it's awesome that they um it's they
- 20:53Speaker 1: were always just so fun because you never knew what
- 20:55Speaker 1: you're going to get every year right it was going
- 20:57Speaker 1: to be like it wasn't bound by that reality that
- 21:01Speaker 1: they put it in a real life, you know, in Springfield,
- 21:04Speaker 1: where it's a real place that, you know, it's bound
- 21:06Speaker 1: by human rules.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Short stories as well.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Oh, it's so funny because I didn't
- 21:13Speaker 1: even think about, I couldn't remember, what's the one that
- 21:17Speaker 1: ends with Homer and Mr. Burns?
- 21:19Speaker 2: Oh, it's... Trails of Horror 3, 2, that is the
- 21:23Speaker 2: third segment. That's the Frankenstein's one.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Yeah, the Frankenstein one, yes. That one... I remember seeing,
- 21:30Speaker 1: because it ends with like next week on The Simpsons.
- 21:34Speaker 1: And it's like, and I remember thinking like, I was
- 21:37Speaker 1: a dumb kid. I was like, oh, that's going to
- 21:39Speaker 1: be a weird episode next week. Like, I was actually... My.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Kid's like, I can't find the next one. I was like,
- 21:45Speaker 2: there is the next one. But they said it was
- 21:46Speaker 2: next week.
- 21:47Speaker 1: It was going to be next week. I was like,
- 21:49Speaker 1: they're going to really have... I can remember thinking, like,
- 21:52Speaker 1: they're going to have Homer and Mr. Burns are going
- 21:54Speaker 1: to be a two-headed guy now.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Yeah. And you bought it. I bought it. This show
- 22:01Speaker 2: is brought to you by the Four Finger Discount Patreon,

- 22:23Speaker 2: it was because I wasn't really allowed to watch horror, obviously,
- 22:25Speaker 2: as a kid. Yeah. But The Simpsons is almost like
- 22:27Speaker 2: your doorway into the world of horror.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure. Yeah, for sure. Like, you realize, you
- 22:34Speaker 1: can see all these things that you didn't necessarily even
- 22:38Speaker 1: get the reference to at the time. But then you
- 22:40Speaker 1: see the horror movies later, and you're like, oh, my God.
- 22:43Speaker 1: I didn't do that. I didn't do that.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Now I watch my kids watching it, and I go, oh,
- 22:47Speaker 2: should they be watching this?
- 22:48Speaker 1: It's pretty violent. Yeah. I know, because it gets pretty violent, right?
- 22:52Speaker 1: They get so violent, and some of them, but kids
- 22:56Speaker 1: are resilient. They'll just bounce back.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Yeah, but what have you got? I've got mine in order,
- 23:02Speaker 2: but you can also do yours in any particular order.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Let's just save your absolute favorite to.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Last, though. Okay, I'll save my absolute favorite to last,
- 23:09Speaker 1: and we've got to have some crossover, Brendan, I feel.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely, and I actually want to start with a
- 23:15Speaker 2: notable mention, because I wanted to include it in my five,
- 23:17Speaker 2: but I thought, no, I'll include it as a notable,
- 23:19Speaker 2: because for me, The reason I love it so much
- 23:21Speaker 2: is because this was the first new episode of The
- 23:25Speaker 2: Simpsons I was ever allowed to watch. I wasn't allowed
- 23:26Speaker 2: to watch The Simpsons until I was six because I've
- 23:29Speaker 2: explained this story numerous times on the podcast. I copied
- 23:31Speaker 2: Maggie in Bad Dream House, got a knife out of
- 23:33Speaker 2: the kitchen drawer. Mom said, that's it. You're not watching
- 23:35Speaker 2: any more Simpsons. I had to wait until I was six.
- 23:37Speaker 2: And it was Treehouse of Horror 6 and it was
- 23:41Speaker 2: Homer 3D. Now, I remember without promoting it as The
- 23:45Speaker 2: Simpsons is 3D this week. And I remember for the
- 23:47Speaker 2: first two thirds of the story, I'm like, This is 3D.
- 23:50Speaker 2: I made a mistake. I must have got the wrong.
- 23:52Speaker 2: I was like, oh, no, I missed it. It was
- 23:54Speaker 2: meant to be on 3D. I missed the 3D. Because
- 23:56Speaker 2: back then, if you missed something when it was first on,
- 23:58Speaker 2: you might never have seen it again. I was trying
- 24:00Speaker 2: to tape and everything. But I just had this nostalgia
- 24:02Speaker 2: for this being not only the first New Simpsons I
- 24:06Speaker 2: was allowed to watch, the Homer in the 3D, so
- 24:07Speaker 2: Homer 3. It was the first one I ever recorded
- 24:11Speaker 2: off TV as well. So I've just got that nostalgia everywhere.
- 24:13Speaker 2: I've got that nostalgic connection for it. So I thought,
- 24:15Speaker 2: I won't include it in my top five, but I
- 24:17Speaker 2: do have a strong connection to it. So Homer Cubed,
- 24:20Speaker 2: what would you call it? Homer 3?
- 24:21Speaker 1: Homer Cubed, yeah. I think it's Homer Cubed.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Homer 3D.
- 24:25Speaker 1: And that one is in my top five. Okay, yeah.
- 24:29Speaker 1: And actually might be my favorite one. Really? And the
- 24:32Speaker 1: only reason I say that is because I kept thinking about,
- 24:35Speaker 1: I mean, that's from Treehouse Horror 5, right? 6. 6, 6. Well,
- 24:40Speaker 1: 5 and 6, both of them, I feel like that's
- 24:44Speaker 1: like golden era.
- 24:45Speaker 2: They're the two best.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Because the timing and the quickness of all the jokes
- 24:52Speaker 1: are so– it's unbelievable. But I'll get to that. I'll
- 24:56Speaker 1: save my reasons for the end of it. But I
- 25:00Speaker 1: was going to start with– it's funny that you mentioned
- 25:03Speaker 1: Bad Dreamhouse. That's actually one of my top five because... Wow.
- 25:09Speaker 1: I know. It's in the first... It's in the very
- 25:12Speaker 1: first Treehouse.
- 25:12Speaker 2: 4, right? It's the very first segment, I think. Yeah.
- 25:15Speaker 1: It's the very first segment ever. Yeah.
- 25:17Speaker 2: And.
- 25:18Speaker 1: But, you know, there are so many jokes in that
- 25:21Speaker 1: that are absolutely hilarious. And especially... considering this was the
- 25:26Speaker 1: first Treehouse of Horror and they had a lot to
- 25:31Speaker 1: still develop and come up with. The jokes in that are,
- 25:36Speaker 1: I love the fact, one of my favorite moments in
- 25:39Speaker 1: that episode or that segment is Homer on the phone.
- 25:42Speaker 2: I was going to say, he told me five or
- 25:44Speaker 2: six times.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Like he's like, you, like the whole thing is so overdramatic.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Like Mr. Plute, like the name Mr. Plute is funny.
- 26:00Speaker 1: And Homer Simpson here. You didn't tell me that this
- 26:05Speaker 1: house was built on a bare ground.
- 26:09Speaker 2: No, you didn't.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Not well done. That's not the way I remember it.
- 26:20Speaker 1: And then he hangs up. He said I mentioned it
- 26:23Speaker 1: five or six times. That's hilarious. Like, that is one
- 26:28Speaker 1: of my most favorite moments of any Treehouse War. And
- 26:31Speaker 1: it's so– nobody really mentions it that much, but it
- 26:35Speaker 1: just kills me how funny that is.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Actually, I think it might be one of those
- 26:39Speaker 2: ones you appreciate– As you're older?
- 26:41Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Like the Raven. I had no time for the Raven
- 26:45Speaker 2: as a kid. I was like, what is this? What
- 26:47Speaker 2: is going on?
- 26:49Speaker 1: Yeah, very, very true adaptation of The Raven. And yeah,
- 26:55Speaker 1: did not, didn't appreciate it, but they executed it very,
- 26:58Speaker 1: very well.
- 26:59Speaker 2: And Hungry or the Damned is a good story as well.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a good one too. But yeah, I feel like, yeah,
- 27:06Speaker 1: Bad Dreamhouse is like the least of my top five,
- 27:09Speaker 1: but I would put that in my top five actually.
- 27:11Speaker 2: I've got Terror at five and a half feet for
- 27:13Speaker 2: the bottom of my top five.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:15Speaker 2: I just think this was the first time I remember
- 27:17Speaker 2: being actually scared by The Simpsons because I would have
- 27:20Speaker 2: been about five or I would have been six when
- 27:22Speaker 2: I first watched this but I was scared and I
- 27:25Speaker 2: think because it's got the element of he's on a
- 27:26Speaker 2: school bus it's like it's a situation I've been in
- 27:29Speaker 2: as well and I'm like shit what does a girl
- 27:31Speaker 2: on a school bus when I get on the school
- 27:33Speaker 2: bus next time you know and it just And at
- 27:35Speaker 2: the end, he's holding Flanders' head and I was just like,
- 27:37Speaker 2: I just remember being actually, it felt like I was
- 27:38Speaker 2: watching horror, you know?
- 27:40Speaker 1: The animation in that is very, there are very scary
- 27:43Speaker 1: moments in that where, you know, that Gremlin is very creepy.
- 27:48Speaker 2: The score is great as well. Yeah.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Score is great yeah that's another thing with uh five
- 27:53Speaker 1: and six is like i feel like it was the
- 27:56Speaker 1: the yeah animation is top tier alf clausen was in
- 27:59Speaker 1: the element uh for parody and as well as you
- 28:03Speaker 1: know just hitting hitting the nail on the head when
- 28:06Speaker 1: it comes to the music views and the direction and
- 28:09Speaker 1: the writing obviously so um but yeah terror five and
- 28:13Speaker 1: a half feet good great choice great choice I'll just
- 28:16Speaker 1: mention the shinning. Yeah.
- 28:19Speaker 2: I let the shinning out by default because I feel
- 28:21Speaker 2: like that's everyone's sort of go-to, you know, but it's
- 28:24Speaker 2: definitely worth discussing the shinning.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Yeah. The shinning is, I feel like, again, jokes at...
- 28:33Speaker 1: every 10 or 15 seconds. Like, I feel like they
- 28:36Speaker 1: knew exactly what they wanted to do. And, you know,
- 28:38Speaker 1: there are some episodes where you're like, oh, they reanimated that.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Or you could tell they threw in a joke in
- 28:45Speaker 1: the last minute and they tried to fix the mouth movements.
- 28:48Speaker 1: And those are the weaknesses. Like, Cape Fear was an episode, actually,
- 28:55Speaker 1: that just had its anniversary at the day we're recording this.
- 28:59Speaker 2: That was a season four episode carried over to season five,
- 29:02Speaker 2: wasn't it?
- 29:03Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it was. And that one is a classic.
- 29:08Speaker 1: It's one of the top episodes ever. But it suffers
- 29:12Speaker 1: from having those last minute jokes in there that are
- 29:14Speaker 1: weirdly timed.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Which ones were they?
- 29:17Speaker 1: One of them was when they're at the dinner table
- 29:20Speaker 1: and Grandpa says, I say we call Metlock. He'll find
- 29:24Speaker 1: the culprit. Uh, and he does that whole speech and
- 29:27Speaker 1: you could, their mouth moments are just like oddly paced.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Okay.
- 29:31Speaker 1: And you'll like, I just posted a clip where they
- 29:34Speaker 1: had a whole other segment completely animated. They had, where
- 29:40Speaker 1: Grandpa's teeth get stolen. And there's a whole other segment
- 29:43Speaker 1: that they animated and they decided to cut.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Oh, that deleted scene on the DVDs, was it?
- 29:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, exactly.
- 29:49Speaker 2: Okay.
- 29:50Speaker 1: And... Yeah, there's a lot of replaced or deleted scenes
- 29:54Speaker 1: and they came up short in that episode. So they
- 29:56Speaker 1: were adding gags and stretching out gags and they worked. But,
- 30:00Speaker 1: you know, there are some of them are weird moments.
- 30:04Speaker 1: And I feel like going back to the shinning. Bam, bam.
- 30:08Speaker 1: They knew exactly what they wanted. They had to, you know,
- 30:10Speaker 1: they talk about in some episodes when they're so good
- 30:13Speaker 1: and there's so many jokes packed in, they 10% it,
- 30:16Speaker 1: I think as they call it, where they have to
- 30:18Speaker 1: speed up the dialogue because there's so many things. I
- 30:22Speaker 1: think that was probably one of them because there's so
- 30:24Speaker 1: many jokes in that, that it's just very fast paced.
- 30:27Speaker 1: And yeah, Shinning, I think that's what makes it such
- 30:31Speaker 1: a great episode or a great segment is because it's
- 30:34Speaker 1: just breakneck speed and all the jokes are pretty, pretty
- 30:37Speaker 1: well so it's.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Really good too because you can enjoy it without even
- 30:41Speaker 2: knowing anything about the shining yes it just works on
- 30:44Speaker 2: its own.
- 30:45Speaker 1: It works on its own exactly yeah you don't need
- 30:47Speaker 1: to know the references and if you do know the
- 30:50Speaker 1: references um that's just another special reward.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Yeah that's one of the things about classic simpsons is
- 30:57Speaker 2: when we were kids watching it it's like you're watching
- 30:59Speaker 2: all these bits and you're like i don't know what
- 31:01Speaker 2: they're talking about but i know it must be something
- 31:03Speaker 2: And then the older you get, you learn the references.
- 31:05Speaker 2: You're like, oh, that's what that was. Oh, that's what
- 31:08Speaker 2: that was. Honestly, I'm going to put it out there.
- 31:10Speaker 2: I've still never seen The Shining because I feel like
- 31:12Speaker 2: I've seen The Shining. I know what happens.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Oh, it's funny too because the local movie house here
- 31:18Speaker 1: in Chicago at the Music Box Theater, they were showing
- 31:21Speaker 1: The Shining in 70 millimeter. Wow. And they showed The Shining.
- 31:26Speaker 1: before the movie and i was like this is amazing.
- 31:30Speaker 2: So many people so many people still refer to the
- 31:32Speaker 2: shining as the shinning it's just it's second nature to us.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Now yeah it's so good it's so good but yeah
- 31:39Speaker 1: that's exactly you don't need to know and cape fear
- 31:41Speaker 1: is the same way it's not a it's not a
- 31:43Speaker 1: halloween episode but again you don't need to i still
- 31:45Speaker 1: haven't seen the movie cape fear.
- 31:47Speaker 2: I only watched it for the first time about a
- 31:48Speaker 2: month ago. Now I'm watching it and I'm like, oh,
- 31:49Speaker 2: that's what they were doing. Oh, that's what they were referencing. Oh,
- 31:52Speaker 2: that's it. I still prefer Cape Fear, the Simpsons version,
- 31:54Speaker 2: but anyway. Yeah, exactly. Cape Fear is a weird movie, man.
- 31:59Speaker 2: It's a weird movie.
- 32:01Speaker 1: Oh, Scorsese directed it. Oh, did Scorsese direct it?
- 32:05Speaker 2: And De Niro's in it, yeah.
- 32:06Speaker 1: And De Niro's in it, yeah. And that was even
- 32:08Speaker 1: a remake, right? That was from the 60s.
- 32:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it was. Yeah. My next one is not, I
- 32:14Speaker 2: feel like it's gotten more attention in recent years, but
- 32:16Speaker 2: for the longest time, it felt like no one really
- 32:18Speaker 2: acknowledged it. It was The Thing and I. I've always
- 32:19Speaker 2: loved the element of Bart being the evil stepbrother. I
- 32:22Speaker 2: like a good twist. I remember as a kid, I
- 32:24Speaker 2: just thought that was just the coolest twist, but also
- 32:26Speaker 2: another episode that actually scared me. And I remember it
- 32:30Speaker 2: was the scene... For some reason, it worked out this
- 32:33Speaker 2: way when I was watching it on TV. I'll never
- 32:34Speaker 2: forget it. And when Bart's in bed and he hears
- 32:38Speaker 2: Hugo in the vents or whatever, and he sort of
- 32:40Speaker 2: seems through the vent. And at that moment... when I
- 32:43Speaker 2: recorded off TV, we used to watch it on a
- 32:46Speaker 2: TV session called Channel 10 here in Australia. They had
- 32:48Speaker 2: The Simpsons.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:49Speaker 2: And the little, we call it M. I don't know,
- 32:51Speaker 2: what do you guys, TV 14, is that what you
- 32:53Speaker 2: call it? It's our version. We call it M for
- 32:54Speaker 2: mature audiences.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 32:56Speaker 2: M popped up just at that moment. So, for my entire, like,
- 32:59Speaker 2: you know, for like 10 years, I just thought in
- 33:01Speaker 2: that moment there was a joke that they're like, this
- 33:03Speaker 2: bit's for mature audiences. It's scary. And then I go
- 33:06Speaker 2: up the DVD set and I'm like, where's the fucking M? Like,
- 33:08Speaker 2: you know.
- 33:11Speaker 1: That is so funny.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Whenever I watch an episode, I'm visualizing the M in
- 33:15Speaker 2: the corner. It was just, it just, it was perfect timing. Yeah.
- 33:18Speaker 2: I've just, I just love the idea of Bart being
- 33:21Speaker 2: the evil twin. Cause it makes sense, you know, but
- 33:23Speaker 2: my kids though are still baffled. They watch over and
- 33:25Speaker 2: over again. They just keep going, wait, so is he
- 33:28Speaker 2: Hugo or Bart? And I'm like, no, that was just
- 33:29Speaker 2: for that episode. They're like, but, but Bart wasn't yet.
- 33:32Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, but it was just a triage of horror.
- 33:33Speaker 2: They're like, I hear you. But still, is that Hugo
- 33:37Speaker 2: or Bart? I'm like, you don't hear me.
- 33:38Speaker 1: It's just pretend. It's not real.
- 33:41Speaker 2: It's just for that one. They're like, ah, okay. So
- 33:44Speaker 2: he's not Hugo. I'm like, no, he's not Hugo.
- 33:47Speaker 1: He's like, this is all you, yeah. It's pretend, catch.
- 33:51Speaker 2: But it's just, it's scary, but it's just really funny
- 33:53Speaker 2: as well. It is. But, but, being the one who's
- 33:57Speaker 2: scared of being, you know, attacked by his brother. So
- 33:59Speaker 2: they go looking for Hugo, but you stay home and
- 34:01Speaker 2: take the hockey game.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Yeah. I feel like the twist at the end of it, right,
- 34:04Speaker 1: where it's like, oh, it's Hugo was the.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Scars on the wrong side.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Like, I felt like I could remember
- 34:13Speaker 1: seeing that coming and the fact that they knew, I
- 34:16Speaker 1: feel like they were like, is anyone really surprised by this? Like,
- 34:21Speaker 1: they weren't saying that.
- 34:22Speaker 2: I've also always gone with the theory, not the theory,
- 34:24Speaker 2: but wondered, Are we supposed to think that Bart knew
- 34:28Speaker 2: he was the evil twin?
- 34:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:29Speaker 2: Or was it just that he's just, like you said,
- 34:31Speaker 2: that no one should be surprised because he is evil. Like,
- 34:33Speaker 2: did Bart know? I guess Bart didn't even know he
- 34:37Speaker 2: had a twin brother though, did he?
- 34:38Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true. Yeah. If I had a twin brother though.
- 34:42Speaker 1: That's what he was thinking.
- 34:44Speaker 2: What's your next one?
- 34:46Speaker 1: Mine is Time and Punishment.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Treehouse of Horror 5.
- 34:50Speaker 1: Yeah. It's like, again, break that speed of like a toaster. Like,
- 34:55Speaker 1: it's so quick. They're like, I don't know. They took
- 35:00Speaker 1: every opportunity in that where it was just like every
- 35:03Speaker 1: new universe that he went to. I mean, it's relevant now, right?
- 35:06Speaker 1: With the multiverse. Yeah. And every story that's out there
- 35:11Speaker 1: for every science fiction thing. But yeah. I feel like
- 35:15Speaker 1: when he finally gets upset and finally gets so angry
- 35:18Speaker 1: that he's like, don't touch anything. Don't touch anything. I
- 35:23Speaker 1: feel like.
- 35:24Speaker 2: He smooshes a little dinosaur.
- 35:26Speaker 1: He smooshes the little bug or dinosaur or whatever. Smashing things.
- 35:33Speaker 1: And then the twist of like, he finally found the
- 35:38Speaker 1: perfect universe and donut. What's a donut?
- 35:43Speaker 2: That's a moment for me. for my childhood that I
- 35:45Speaker 2: have a vivid memory of my parents laughing at. And
- 35:47Speaker 2: just for the first time, I was like, See, mom,
- 35:50Speaker 2: you didn't let me watch The Simpsons, but this shit's funny.
- 35:52Speaker 2: I was like, it's the first time I've seen my
- 35:54Speaker 2: mom in particular laugh at a Simpsons joke. I was like,
- 35:57Speaker 2: they've won her over.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Isn't it great that you have those moments in your brain?
- 36:01Speaker 1: Like I can remember the very same things like watching
- 36:05Speaker 1: TV with my parents and I can remember certain moments
- 36:07Speaker 1: of episodes because my parents wouldn't watch The Simpsons the
- 36:10Speaker 1: same as yours. It's every once in a while. Like
- 36:13Speaker 1: I'd have it on... they'd be like, okay, we'll watch it. Oh,
- 36:16Speaker 1: they ended up watching it because my uncle was living
- 36:18Speaker 1: with us for a while and he wanted to watch it.
- 36:21Speaker 1: And so my parents were like, yeah, the cool uncle.
- 36:24Speaker 1: And so we're like, okay, we'll watch it since, oh, sorry.
- 36:27Speaker 1: We'll watch it since, um, since, uh, you know, uncle,
- 36:31Speaker 1: uncle Jim will watch it. And so, uh, I can
- 36:34Speaker 1: remember watching Bart's dog, uh, gets an out. I think
- 36:38Speaker 1: it was, or, uh, at the end of the act
- 36:41Speaker 1: break is, uh, Homer goes, uh, And the dog goes, oh. Yeah.
- 36:47Speaker 2: That's when he chews up the assassins.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Yeah. He chews up the assassins. And I
- 36:51Speaker 1: can remember my parents laughing out loud at that. And
- 36:56Speaker 1: everybody laughing was like, this is cool. You know, watching,
- 36:59Speaker 1: you know, it's a real family moment. Yeah. Yeah. It's
- 37:03Speaker 1: nice that you, you know, you have those memories and
- 37:05Speaker 1: that you have that one tied to that specific segment too.
- 37:08Speaker 1: It's awesome.
- 37:09Speaker 2: Well, that's why you mentioned, I'm not sure we discussed
- 37:11Speaker 2: it on air. It might've been off air how I've
- 37:13Speaker 2: been doing, I did a, reaction video of my kids
- 37:15Speaker 2: of who shot mr burns because yeah i said you
- 37:17Speaker 2: guys can watch any simpsons episode but you just can't
- 37:19Speaker 2: watch those ones because i wanted to experience them experiencing
- 37:23Speaker 2: that moment for the first time yeah and um oh
- 37:27Speaker 2: it kind of got spoiled for them kind of but
- 37:28Speaker 2: they they heard it but they didn't pay attention it
- 37:31Speaker 2: was the they watched cartridge family.
- 37:33Speaker 1: And oh yeah i thought maggie bigger i.
- 37:35Speaker 2: Thought maggie show now that would have made more sense
- 37:37Speaker 2: and i heard that i mean i'm in the kitchen
- 37:39Speaker 2: chopping dinner i was like and they didn't say anything
- 37:42Speaker 2: i was like I was like, whatever. So I waited
- 37:47Speaker 2: a good like two months just to make sure they
- 37:48Speaker 2: forgot they heard anything about that. And then, yeah, so
- 37:52Speaker 2: we watched it. It's available on YouTube. My kids are
- 37:53Speaker 2: watching and they got the little notepads out and they're
- 37:55Speaker 2: writing down the clues. Oh, he's angry. I better write
- 37:58Speaker 2: his name down. And then in part two, they're crossing
- 38:00Speaker 2: that name off and they're crossing that name off. And
- 38:01Speaker 2: it was just so cool as a dad. it's experiencing
- 38:04Speaker 2: what i went through as a kid yeah i know
- 38:06Speaker 2: it sounds silly i guess but yeah.
- 38:07Speaker 1: No it's not it's great i mean that's what we
- 38:10Speaker 1: do right we there's a there's a meme i saw
- 38:13Speaker 1: that um it's like you raise your kids to watch
- 38:17Speaker 1: everything that you enjoyed and that scene from total recall
- 38:21Speaker 1: where arnold says you are not you you are me
- 38:24Speaker 1: yeah it's like yeah because that's That's what I'm doing.
- 38:28Speaker 1: I'm just going to have him watch Back to the Future,
- 38:32Speaker 1: even though he's probably still too young to watch that.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Doc gets shot by terrorists in it, but, you know.
- 38:38Speaker 2: There was some parody site that put a headline out once.
- 38:41Speaker 2: It was like, child destined to be uncool due to
- 38:44Speaker 2: parents only letting them watch shows from their own childhood
- 38:46Speaker 2: or something like that.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. Yeah, but I don't care. You know, he
- 38:50Speaker 1: enjoys that. And, you know, right now his favorite movie is, well,
- 38:55Speaker 1: I don't think it's Back to the Future anymore. But
- 38:57Speaker 1: for a while there, it was like, Back to the
- 38:59Speaker 1: Future is my favorite movie. I was like, thanks.
- 39:01Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I'm like at the moment. We go
- 39:03Speaker 2: home from school and the kids are like, can we
- 39:04Speaker 2: put Simpsons on? I'm like, yes.
- 39:10Speaker 1: Yes, exactly. And it's the same way with Looney Tunes
- 39:13Speaker 1: right now. I love Looney Tunes. Whenever I want to
- 39:17Speaker 1: watch Looney Tunes.
- 39:20Speaker 2: I feel like my love of Looney Tunes came from
- 39:23Speaker 2: my love of Space Jam. Because throughout the 90s, the
- 39:26Speaker 2: Looney Tunes had a resurgence because they had the clothing line.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Was it 90s?
- 39:30Speaker 1: 90s?
- 39:30Speaker 2: Yeah. And then they did Space Jam. And it's just
- 39:33Speaker 2: like Space Jam is just one of my old timers.
- 39:34Speaker 2: You know, you just have those movies from your childhood
- 39:36Speaker 2: that you just love. And Space Jam is one of
- 39:38Speaker 2: those for me. And they just, because it's the 30th anniversary,
- 39:40Speaker 2: had it on at the movies here. Every Tuesday and
- 39:43Speaker 2: Friday in Geelong, where I live, they screen a classic movie.
- 39:47Speaker 2: I mean, on the Tuesday, it was something about Mary
- 39:49Speaker 2: celebrating her 30th anniversary or whatever. And then they had
- 39:51Speaker 2: Space Jam. My son's like, can we see Space Jam?
- 39:54Speaker 2: I'm like, can we see fucking Space Jam? We are
- 39:56Speaker 2: going to see Space Jam. So I took my wife
- 40:00Speaker 2: and my daughter, and we all went and saw Space Jam.
- 40:02Speaker 2: And I'm sitting there with my Space Jam popcorn bucket
- 40:05Speaker 2: and the things playing. And I'm sitting there with a
- 40:07Speaker 2: big grin. And my son's sitting there with a big grin.
- 40:09Speaker 2: My wife's sitting there half asleep. My daughter's already asleep.
- 40:12Speaker 2: But I didn't care. I'm like, I'm watching Space Jam
- 40:15Speaker 2: at the movies with the kids. This is great.
- 40:17Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it's awesome. Oh, yeah. I mean, that's what
- 40:21Speaker 1: life is, man. Do whatever the hell you want. You're
- 40:25Speaker 1: going to have those special moments with your kids. Just
- 40:27Speaker 1: do whatever you do to make those.
- 40:30Speaker 2: My next one, by the way, is Clown Without Pity.
- 40:33Speaker 2: I've always really enjoyed this one. I think it's the
- 40:35Speaker 2: earliest one that I've got on my list. But I
- 40:38Speaker 2: don't think I really appreciated this one as much when
- 40:40Speaker 2: I was a kid. But as I got older, and
- 40:41Speaker 2: I've seen the one, this is a parody from a
- 40:45Speaker 2: trilogy of terror. And it's the final scene from a
- 40:47Speaker 2: trilogy of terror where this doll comes to life. And
- 40:50Speaker 2: it's just constantly trying to kill this woman. And then
- 40:53Speaker 2: I watched, I think I appreciate this one a lot
- 40:55Speaker 2: more now because I can see how much of a
- 40:56Speaker 2: parody that is. But this one, I wouldn't call it
- 40:59Speaker 2: overly gruesome, but it's just scary in a sense. Again,
- 41:02Speaker 2: as a kid, you're related, but you're like, what if
- 41:04Speaker 2: that doll just came to life and wanted to kill me? Yeah.
- 41:07Speaker 2: What would I do? You know? And it's just, it's just,
- 41:09Speaker 2: it's such a simple concept. And I just really like,
- 41:11Speaker 2: I think it's really funny. I always loved Homer. The
- 41:13Speaker 2: visual of Homer running out of the bath slayed me
- 41:15Speaker 2: when I was a kid. I thought it was the
- 41:16Speaker 2: funniest thing I've ever seen. But, um, There's a bit
- 41:19Speaker 2: in it that I never appreciated until I was older.
- 41:21Speaker 2: It's when Krusty is choking Homer and he's got him...
- 41:24Speaker 2: I think he's drowning him and he's like, the clown's
- 41:27Speaker 2: trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.
- 41:30Speaker 1: Right, yeah. That's hilarious. I thought you were going to
- 41:35Speaker 1: mention that. Ooh, dog water. Yes. That is hilarious. And
- 41:42Speaker 1: then Homer, the dog goes after him and He's like,
- 41:48Speaker 1: the doll's trying to kill me. And Bart says, I'd
- 41:50Speaker 1: say the pressure's gotten to Dan, but what pressure? There's
- 41:57Speaker 1: not many good jokes. That one's good. And the fact that, oh,
- 42:00Speaker 1: isn't it always a pleasure when you realize that something,
- 42:05Speaker 1: I mean, we kind of touched on this earlier, that
- 42:07Speaker 1: something was a reference to a story that's already been
- 42:11Speaker 1: done and you didn't even know it existed. I feel
- 42:15Speaker 1: like I know Cape Fear exists. I keep using that.
- 42:18Speaker 1: But Bad Dream House was.
- 42:20Speaker 2: A medieval horror.
- 42:21Speaker 1: Yeah. abbyville horror and and poltergeist and all those uh
- 42:25Speaker 1: house related horrors and those are clearly like uh um
- 42:29Speaker 1: parodies of that but it's like i didn't know that
- 42:32Speaker 1: there was a trilogy of terror episode where about a
- 42:36Speaker 1: doll that comes to life until like years later like
- 42:39Speaker 1: i was it was Halloween time and it was on TV.
- 42:42Speaker 1: I was like, what is this? Like this is a
- 42:44Speaker 1: doll that's coming to life. And it, but it, you
- 42:48Speaker 1: didn't need to know that for this, this, uh, segment
- 42:51Speaker 1: to be, to work and it'd be so funny.
- 42:54Speaker 2: Same with terror at five and a half feet. It's
- 42:55Speaker 2: the twilight zone with John Lithgow. I think Shatner, Shatner's
- 42:58Speaker 2: in the first one, I think.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Shatner's in the first one. Yeah. And then, um, Lithgow's
- 43:03Speaker 1: in the, in the movie version and both of those
- 43:05Speaker 1: are terrifying actually. Yeah. Um, on their own but um.
- 43:09Speaker 2: We're talking about merch earlier as well and now you
- 43:11Speaker 2: can actually get the Krusty doll a legitimate Krusty doll
- 43:14Speaker 2: in the box and everything.
- 43:15Speaker 1: Yeah yeah exactly and you pull the string.
- 43:17Speaker 2: Where were these things in the 90s man I know.
- 43:19Speaker 1: I know I actually gave that away as a prize
- 43:22Speaker 1: a couple years ago when I first came out I
- 43:25Speaker 1: was like oh yeah people.
- 43:26Speaker 2: Want yeah 100% yeah what kind of prizes do you
- 43:30Speaker 2: give out at the trivia nights.
- 43:32Speaker 1: You know, sometimes I reach out to second best pet
- 43:36Speaker 1: shop people online that do their own stuff. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 43:40Speaker 2: He's changed his name a few times now to avoid
- 43:42Speaker 2: the Disney.
- 43:42Speaker 1: Yeah. Exactly.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:46Speaker 1: I think that Simpsons Man does original ones too.
- 43:49Speaker 2: I think he makes some stuff, right?
- 43:51Speaker 1: Yeah, he makes the original merchandise. And it's usually stuff
- 43:55Speaker 1: that you can't find elsewhere. Like, I think it is
- 44:01Speaker 1: Second Best Pet Shop that does like bumper stickers. It says,
- 44:04Speaker 1: you know, follow me to the Springfield Aquarium. Like little
- 44:07Speaker 1: niche stuff that's like... stickers and things like that that
- 44:11Speaker 1: were stickers in the show that people would just like
- 44:13Speaker 1: them because they want these to be a real thing.
- 44:16Speaker 1: But yeah, it's usually prizes like that or there's a
- 44:21Speaker 1: local place here in Chicago that's called Hairbrained that they
- 44:24Speaker 1: don't they never sell their Simpson stuff because again, like
- 44:28Speaker 1: intellectual property, they're worried about being sued, but they'll, they'll
- 44:31Speaker 1: give them like they created them. And they'll, if you
- 44:34Speaker 1: asked about them, they'll, they'll sell them, but they won't like, if.
- 44:37Speaker 2: You want to give them money, they'll accept it.
- 44:39Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. But they have, um, like there's a poster
- 44:43Speaker 1: of stop the plant, plant of youths. I want to
- 44:45Speaker 1: get off that. They created it. And that I gave
- 44:48Speaker 1: away as a prize. And so it's, I choose to
- 44:51Speaker 1: try to make prizes that are pretty unique and, Stuff
- 44:54Speaker 1: that 30, 40-year-olds are going to want and not be
- 45:00Speaker 1: too embarrassed by owning.
- 45:01Speaker 2: When we used to do ours like six, seven years ago,
- 45:03Speaker 2: we just gave money away. Everyone likes money.
- 45:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I know. Just go buy yourself something nice, some
- 45:09Speaker 1: Simpsons joke or whatever you want.
- 45:12Speaker 2: Go do the shopping for a week. This show is

- 45:31Speaker 2: and Dando today at patreon.com slash fourfingerdiscount. What's your next one?
- 45:37Speaker 1: Citizen Kane. So yeah, yep. That one was, I think
- 45:41Speaker 1: I just appreciate because, again, it was one that was
- 45:44Speaker 1: like more of a parody of like, just elections at
- 45:47Speaker 1: the time, but it was still under the guise of
- 45:49Speaker 1: a young thing. And, and that it's referenced so often now,
- 45:54Speaker 1: in elections in general, because it's relevant, like, and the
- 45:59Speaker 1: joke of abortions for some a miniature american flags brothers
- 46:03Speaker 1: yay and you know but but it was like abortions
- 46:07Speaker 1: for all boo abortions for no one.
- 46:10Speaker 2: Boo twirling towards freedom.
- 46:12Speaker 1: Yeah yeah exactly like that uh great parody of like
- 46:16Speaker 1: just that's just how stupid elections can be.
- 46:20Speaker 2: Um don't blame me i voted for kodos as.
- 46:22Speaker 1: Always yes yeah don't blame me for i voted for
- 46:24Speaker 1: photos and that's one that like It's not scary. I
- 46:28Speaker 1: don't think the episode's scary at all. It's just a
- 46:32Speaker 1: great political commentator.
- 46:34Speaker 2: The only reason I didn't include it in my list,
- 46:36Speaker 2: because I kind of thought, if you didn't live through
- 46:38Speaker 2: that time, does the parody of the 96th election kind
- 46:41Speaker 2: of stand up now? And I don't think it quite does.
- 46:44Speaker 2: I know it's a parody of just politics in general,
- 46:47Speaker 2: but I feel like the direct reference of it being
- 46:49Speaker 2: so specific to that election kind of dates that one now.
- 46:53Speaker 1: It kind of does, yeah. There are definitely things in it,
- 46:56Speaker 1: like people are like, You know, Bob Dole.
- 46:59Speaker 2: Who's Bob Dole?
- 47:00Speaker 1: Yeah, who's Bob Dole?
- 47:01Speaker 2: Usually, Simpsons would do parodies of things or reference things
- 47:04Speaker 2: that were essentially timeless.
- 47:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:06Speaker 2: And that one there, I just kind of feel like
- 47:08Speaker 2: no one's talking about Bob Dole in 2026. You know
- 47:09Speaker 2: what I mean?
- 47:10Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true.
- 47:11Speaker 2: My next one is Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace. I think
- 47:14Speaker 2: this is my first introduction to a genuine horror villain
- 47:17Speaker 2: in Freddy Krueger.
- 47:18Speaker 1: Yes. And.
- 47:19Speaker 2: It's gruesome, but it's not overly gory. There are some
- 47:21Speaker 2: scary bits for kids. I guess you could say Martin,
- 47:24Speaker 2: see Martin dead and Freddie on fire and things like that.
- 47:27Speaker 2: We've got Do Not Touch Willie, which I think was hilarious.
- 47:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:30Speaker 2: But I just think it's a great showcase for Dan
- 47:32Speaker 2: as Willie. And I think Willie really had many showcase
- 47:35Speaker 2: moments before this. And I feel like this is where
- 47:36Speaker 2: the first time where the writers kind of went, you
- 47:38Speaker 2: know what, we can actually do something with this guy.
- 47:39Speaker 2: I know he had sort of that recurring story in
- 47:41Speaker 2: Treehouse of Horror 5 where he kept getting killed in
- 47:43Speaker 2: each segment.
- 47:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:44Speaker 2: But this was his first real proper like standout moment,
- 47:47Speaker 2: I thought, and Willie became more of a prominent character
- 47:50Speaker 2: as a result, I think.
- 47:51Speaker 1: And they have those terrible jokes that Freddy Krueger would
- 47:56Speaker 1: make that are always like word puns.
- 47:58Speaker 2: Nice to wreck your acquaintance.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Yeah, please to wreck your acquaintance. Like what? You couldn't
- 48:07Speaker 1: get more lame than that.
- 48:10Speaker 2: But even like the art of, I think it's in
- 48:12Speaker 2: particular the opening scene, It looks very much like a
- 48:15Speaker 2: dream where it's all sort of blurry in the background
- 48:16Speaker 2: and just the characters are standing out and things like that.
- 48:18Speaker 2: It felt special. And I just thought it was just
- 48:20Speaker 2: a really, really solid parody of the Nightmare on Elm
- 48:24Speaker 2: Street series.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Yeah, and Alf Clawson, again, like nailed the synthesizer music
- 48:30Speaker 1: from the 80s that is in all those movies. Great choice. Yeah,
- 48:35Speaker 1: I feel like that one is, I feel like that
- 48:38Speaker 1: probably has some of the scariest moments in it. And
- 48:40Speaker 1: not only that, but it's Soylent Green, right, is kind
- 48:46Speaker 1: of the reference of it too. Not just Nightmare on
- 48:48Speaker 1: Elm Street.
- 48:49Speaker 2: And your number one was Home of 3D, correct?
- 48:52Speaker 1: Yeah, Homer cubed. Yeah, that was one that I felt
- 48:55Speaker 1: like was, again, great jokes back to back. I love
- 48:59Speaker 1: the fact that Chief Wiggum shoots the dimension.
- 49:02Speaker 2: Take that, you lousy dimension.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Take that, you lousy dimension. And again, every line from
- 49:09Speaker 1: that seems like it's a hilarious joke. Frank is on
- 49:14Speaker 1: his top game there. And I haven't seen Back Rooms,
- 49:19Speaker 1: but I guess Back.
- 49:19Speaker 2: Rooms, it's a movie, right?
- 49:23Speaker 1: I remember that when that movie came out, people were like, oh,
- 49:26Speaker 1: they already did this on The Simpsons with Homer. Really?
- 49:29Speaker 2: I guess, yeah, he went through the wall. Yeah.
- 49:32Speaker 1: Because he went through the wall.
- 49:34Speaker 2: Yeah, into another world.
- 49:35Speaker 1: They had the box, you know, the door. That's true.
- 49:39Speaker 2: Yeah, yep.
- 49:40Speaker 1: Yeah, like there's elements of it, I feel like, that
- 49:43Speaker 1: people were like, oh, the Simpsons already did this. But
- 49:45Speaker 1: the Simpsons were referencing a thing with their suit. What
- 49:48Speaker 1: was that? It looks like Little Girl Lost. What's that? Oh,
- 49:53Speaker 1: it's a Twilight Zone episode, actually. So, but yeah, that's
- 49:57Speaker 1: just different universes. But again, that one ended, I remember
- 50:01Speaker 1: thinking that ending where Homer goes into that world First
- 50:07Speaker 1: of all, Al Claussen. Again, kudos. Beautiful music at the end.
- 50:11Speaker 1: Thinking like, is this how The Simpsons is going to
- 50:15Speaker 1: be now?
- 50:15Speaker 2: This is. It's now 3D. He's in the real world.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Is this it? Is Homer going to be in the
- 50:21Speaker 1: real world? What's going to happen?
- 50:22Speaker 2: You're like my kids. Where's Hugo?
- 50:24Speaker 1: Yeah, where's Hugo? Where's Hugo?
- 50:27Speaker 2: For me, I've always said if I'm going to get
- 50:28Speaker 2: a Simpsons tattoo, stay with me. I'll explain why. It's
- 50:33Speaker 2: the cube with Homer's head inside. The reason is, I
- 50:37Speaker 2: watched this and then we went to school like a
- 50:39Speaker 2: couple of weeks later and we're in art class. All right,
- 50:42Speaker 2: now we're going to draw 3D objects. Who knows how
- 50:44Speaker 2: to draw a cube? And I was like, well, come
- 50:47Speaker 2: look at me guys. And I went up there and I,
- 50:49Speaker 2: you draw a square. And then if you extend the
- 50:51Speaker 2: square and I like copied free and the teacher was like,
- 50:54Speaker 2: where'd you learn that? And I'm like, the Simpsons. And
- 50:56Speaker 2: she's like, what?
- 50:58Speaker 1: It's so funny yeah it's so funny how kids pick
- 51:00Speaker 1: up things right where it's like they learn things and
- 51:03Speaker 1: you it's totally unintentional right where it's like oh they
- 51:06Speaker 1: they managed to learn okay well i could.
- 51:09Speaker 2: Genuinely taught me how to draw a cube yeah this
- 51:12Speaker 2: is so.
- 51:12Speaker 1: Simple yeah here is an ordinary square we'll slow down again.
- 51:20Speaker 2: But yeah did you see someone posted a photo we
- 51:22Speaker 2: reshared it the other day but um They went to
- 51:25Speaker 2: the actual location of when Homer came into the real world.
- 51:27Speaker 2: Have you seen that? Yeah.
- 51:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I have. Yeah. It's funny that it's, it's an
- 51:31Speaker 1: actual place that still looks not that different from.
- 51:34Speaker 2: Same dumpster almost.
- 51:36Speaker 1: It's just, did it at a place that was like
- 51:42Speaker 1: non like it's nondescript right where it's just like oh
- 51:46Speaker 1: let's just go back here on this place on you
- 51:48Speaker 1: know you know in los angeles at los angeles it's
- 51:51Speaker 1: not going to change very much you know.
- 51:53Speaker 2: It's a very um interesting story that the front when
- 51:55Speaker 2: they're out in front of the store they're doing the
- 51:57Speaker 2: erotic case and stuff they have to basically shut the
- 51:58Speaker 2: street down have you heard that story no they talk
- 52:01Speaker 2: about it in the commentary and you can actually see
- 52:03Speaker 2: it the crane they had to basically block a street
- 52:05Speaker 2: in LA and they couldn't get like the contract or
- 52:07Speaker 2: the permission to do it so they just went and
- 52:08Speaker 2: did it so that's why you can see all the
- 52:10Speaker 2: traffic building up in the distance because they didn't get
- 52:12Speaker 2: a permit they just got a crane and just basically
- 52:15Speaker 2: blocked the street trying to go around like what's going
- 52:18Speaker 2: on wow actually watching the background you see all the
- 52:21Speaker 2: traffic building up trying to work out what the hell's
- 52:23Speaker 2: going on I.
- 52:24Speaker 1: Have to watch that again I have to watch that
- 52:26Speaker 1: again oh my.
- 52:26Speaker 2: God watch it with the commentary yeah.
- 52:28Speaker 1: I will I will oh that's crazy.
- 52:32Speaker 2: My number one, though, is Nightmare Cafeteria. I've always just
- 52:37Speaker 2: absolutely loved this. I think, to me, it's the perfect
- 52:39Speaker 2: Simpsons Halloween segment because it's incredibly violent, incredibly funny, and
- 52:44Speaker 2: it doesn't rely on parody. I think that was the
- 52:47Speaker 2: Soylent Green one.
- 52:47Speaker 1: That was the Soylent Green one. Yeah, I got mixed
- 52:49Speaker 1: up with that Nightmare.
- 52:50Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it's a Soylent Green parody, but
- 52:53Speaker 2: this sort of stands on its own. It's just, you know,
- 52:55Speaker 2: the teachers are eating kids. You can believe this is
- 52:57Speaker 2: just a story they've made up themselves.
- 52:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:59Speaker 2: And it's just a spooky story that works for me.
- 53:02Speaker 2: And as a kid watching it, I just have fond
- 53:04Speaker 2: memories going, wow, what if the teachers just decide to
- 53:06Speaker 2: eat us one day? You know what I mean? It
- 53:07Speaker 2: better be good. Like I said, it's really violent and
- 53:11Speaker 2: it's got the really funny ending at the end with
- 53:13Speaker 2: the fog coming in. For me, it just felt like
- 53:15Speaker 2: a really... I love a good rug pull ending. We
- 53:18Speaker 2: interviewed David Merkin recently. He hasn't come out yet, but
- 53:21Speaker 2: he was just talking about how he was a big
- 53:22Speaker 2: fan of the endings that just kind of said, fuck
- 53:24Speaker 2: you to the audience. And that's kind of a classic
- 53:26Speaker 2: example of that. It's just like, yeah, we didn't really
- 53:28Speaker 2: have an ending for this. So we just, you know,
- 53:30Speaker 2: it was a dream and we're going to pull the
- 53:31Speaker 2: rug out. And now they're getting turned inside out by
- 53:32Speaker 2: fog because it's the Simpsons and we can do what
- 53:34Speaker 2: we want. I'm a big fan of that. And yeah,
- 53:37Speaker 2: I just think Nightmare Cafeteria, it's just, it's just a
- 53:39Speaker 2: really simple classic horror story that in the Simpsons universe.
- 53:43Speaker 2: And I was thinking they did a really funny job
- 53:44Speaker 2: of it. Yeah.
- 53:45Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I agree. And that's one, too, that actually
- 53:48Speaker 1: has really scary moments because you see these regular characters
- 53:53Speaker 1: and they get pretty grotesque, right? Where they're just like,
- 53:57Speaker 1: you know, I mean, Skitter, like, I start by eating
- 54:02Speaker 1: your shorts and they're all like drooling at the mouth. Yeah.
- 54:05Speaker 2: It's scary.
- 54:06Speaker 1: It's scary.
- 54:07Speaker 2: But that is my number one, Nightmare Cafeteria.
- 54:09Speaker 1: Fantastic choice.
- 54:10Speaker 2: I don't think we had any crossover.
- 54:12Speaker 1: We didn't, which is incredible. There were definitely some that
- 54:16Speaker 1: you had that I was like, yeah, I was thinking
- 54:18Speaker 1: about that too.
- 54:19Speaker 2: It's very rare that we put in the title top
- 54:21Speaker 2: 10 of anything and it's actually a top 10 because
- 54:22Speaker 2: there's always crossover. I think this is the first time
- 54:24Speaker 2: I've never had crossover with anybody. So this is an
- 54:25Speaker 2: actual top 10 Treehouse of Horror segments. There we go.
- 54:28Speaker 1: We did it.
- 54:29Speaker 2: We achieved something. Good team.
- 54:31Speaker 1: Yeah, good team. Good job.
- 54:33Speaker 2: But thank you so much for joining me here today.
- 54:34Speaker 2: It's been fun to catch up once again. But let's
- 54:37Speaker 2: talk about, again, before we go, about your upcoming trivia
- 54:39Speaker 2: night slash costume contest, October 26th at the Pizzeria.
- 54:43Speaker 1: Is that what you said it was called? Yeah, Pizzeria Serial.
- 54:45Speaker 1: And it's 1708 West Belmont in Chicago. Doors open at 6.
- 54:51Speaker 1: The trivia starts at 7. Get there early. There will
- 54:53Speaker 1: be a line.
- 54:55Speaker 2: How early do you think? What's a genuine expectation?
- 54:58Speaker 1: People will start lining up, I think, probably at 5.15,
- 55:03Speaker 1: 5 or 5.15.
- 55:04Speaker 2: Nearly two hours earlier.
- 55:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I know. It's crazy. And then it's like a
- 55:07Speaker 1: three-hour trivia. So it's like you just plan your whole
- 55:10Speaker 1: night around it. But, you know, it's going to be
- 55:13Speaker 1: a good time because you're going to see great– well,
- 55:16Speaker 1: I show episodes on the TVs now, and it's usually
- 55:19Speaker 1: like recordings from the actual– Oh, wow.
- 55:22Speaker 2: Yeah, that's cool.
- 55:22Speaker 1: You know, time. And so they'll have the commercials in
- 55:25Speaker 1: there from the nineties. And so that's fun to watch.
- 55:27Speaker 2: I know you told me you got those, like the
- 55:30Speaker 2: ads and stuff, promos off YouTube, but have you gotten
- 55:32Speaker 2: the episodes and then put the promos in between the
- 55:35Speaker 2: ad breaks yourself? How have you got actual genuine recordings
- 55:38Speaker 2: from that? Is it just ones that you recorded?
- 55:40Speaker 1: So there are some, there are a few on the
- 55:44Speaker 1: Internet Archive, but most of them have come from people
- 55:48Speaker 1: who have reached out to me.
- 55:49Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 55:50Speaker 1: Or I found them on.
- 55:53Speaker 2: The dark web.
- 55:54Speaker 1: Yeah, the dark web. But I feel like, why can't
- 55:58Speaker 1: I think of like... Alt.Simpsons. Yeah, you know, people download...
- 56:05Speaker 1: You mean like torrents? Torrents, yeah.
- 56:07Speaker 2: Yeah. Can you torrent official, not official, but original recordings
- 56:13Speaker 2: of things?
- 56:13Speaker 1: I think people have the original recordings on torrents, but
- 56:17Speaker 1: there is somebody that follows me on Daily Simpsons on Twitter.
- 56:19Speaker 1: And they're like, I think when I started showing the
- 56:22Speaker 1: few that I had on Twitch years ago, he reached
- 56:25Speaker 1: out to me and was like, I have my own recordings.
- 56:27Speaker 1: And I started converting them. Will you show my recordings?
- 56:30Speaker 1: And so he sent me all of his files too.
- 56:32Speaker 1: And so I had tons of these files, man. Like
- 56:34Speaker 1: I actually have like 60 or 70 of them, I
- 56:37Speaker 1: feel like.
- 56:38Speaker 2: It's such a nostalgia trip, isn't it?
- 56:40Speaker 1: It is.
- 56:41Speaker 2: When you see the trailers or the ads in between, yeah.
- 56:44Speaker 1: And you realize there's things you've forgotten about. There was
- 56:47Speaker 1: this one movie that came up when we were watching episodes,
- 56:53Speaker 1: and it was about a dog. There was a scene
- 56:56Speaker 1: in court where the dog was testifying. But it was
- 57:00Speaker 1: actually just a normal dog, but it was barking. But
- 57:03Speaker 1: he was a witness in a trial.
- 57:05Speaker 2: Like a straight-to-TV movie?
- 57:07Speaker 1: No, it was in theaters, man. It made into theaters.
- 57:11Speaker 2: Dog in Court?
- 57:13Speaker 1: I got to look it up real quick. Dog movie, 1991.
- 57:15Speaker 1: Let's see who can.
- 57:17Speaker 2: Do it first.
- 57:18Speaker 1: Bingo.
- 57:19Speaker 2: Oh, Bingo. I loved Bingo, the movie when I was
- 57:21Speaker 2: a kid.
- 57:22Speaker 1: But there's a dog that they have a court. I
- 57:25Speaker 1: think there's a scene in court where there's like, so, Bingo,
- 57:29Speaker 1: tell me about like.
- 57:33Speaker 1: If you watch the trailer online, they're like... I was like...
- 57:37Speaker 1: what was this movie? I've never heard of bingo.
- 57:40Speaker 2: I see bingo is one of those movies that I
- 57:42Speaker 2: think my, you know, your family just fucking own some
- 57:44Speaker 2: random like home videos and bingo was like one of them.
- 57:47Speaker 2: And like, you just, because we didn't have the beauty
- 57:49Speaker 2: of internet, you just had to watch what your family had.
- 57:51Speaker 2: So we just, We just watched Bingo. Bingo, Milo and Otis,
- 57:54Speaker 2: which is full of animal cruelty.
- 57:57Speaker 1: Yes. Yes. This movie did not make its money back.
- 58:01Speaker 2: No, it did not. I'm just looking at it now.
- 58:04Speaker 1: It had a budget of $ 10 million. It made $ 8. 6
- 58:05Speaker 1: million in 1991. That's... That's rough.
- 58:11Speaker 2: Let's read the Google synopsis. Bingo.
- 58:14Speaker 1: For fun. Yes, let's do it.
- 58:17Speaker 2: Bingo, a runaway circus dog saves the life of Chucky,
- 58:20Speaker 2: a young boy. The two become best buddies who play
- 58:23Speaker 2: and do homework together. Bingo faces hurdles to be with
- 58:26Speaker 2: Chucky on his tour.
- 58:27Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, yeah, I'm sold.
- 58:32Speaker 2: My kids will be like, another triumph.
- 58:34Speaker 1: Yeah, another triumph. Yeah, that commercial came up during the.
- 58:40Speaker 2: Wow, that's cool.
- 58:41Speaker 3: And I was like, guys, what is this movie? And
- 58:44Speaker 3: I was like, I can't believe... You don't know Bingo?
- 58:46Speaker 3: People were like going nuts. Like, oh, look at this.
- 58:50Speaker 3: How incredible this movie looks. But yeah, it's this nostalgia trip.
- 58:54Speaker 3: You realize how cheap things used to be.
- 58:57Speaker 2: That's the most depressing bit about it.
- 58:59Speaker 1: It is.
- 59:00Speaker 2: Big Macs for a dollar and you're like, oh.
- 59:01Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's what I was going to say. Like,
- 59:04Speaker 1: you know, Burger King commercials or whatever. It's like, oh, yeah.
- 59:08Speaker 2: Awesome Batman glass for an extra $ 1.
- 59:09Speaker 1: Yeah. It makes me sad. But yeah, the whole thing
- 59:17Speaker 1: is a nostalgia strip. So we have those and then
- 59:19Speaker 1: we have obviously the costumes that people look forward to
- 59:22Speaker 1: the most.
- 59:23Speaker 2: Who votes? Just the people there vote?
- 59:26Speaker 1: I kind of, no. So it's just, it's the hosts
- 59:29Speaker 1: and me. I vote and then as well as the
- 59:35Speaker 1: people who are helping me score. Like I usually have
- 59:37Speaker 1: a team of people. I might just have one other
- 59:39Speaker 1: guy here. But you can really kind of tell based
- 59:41Speaker 1: on audience reaction who you should be. choosing as the
- 59:45Speaker 1: winner because usually they'll get, you know, it's the biggest
- 59:49Speaker 1: shares or whatever, but a lot of times it's really
- 59:52Speaker 1: hard because people, because there's so many factors in it, right?
- 59:56Speaker 1: There's like how the person performs as the character, what
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: their presentation is, how the quality of their costume, the reference,
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: there's just so many things to consider. 10 years ago now,
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: there was a couple that specifically flew in from, from,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: Sussex in the UK to get engaged at Trivia Night.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: I think I remember you posting about this, actually.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: Yeah, and they heard about it from BuzzFeed or something
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: like that. The Trivia Night had gone viral from a
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: BuzzFeed article and they're like, this looks incredible. I want
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: to bring my fiancé, or no, my girlfriend and I,
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: they were boyfriend and girlfriend at the time. We want
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: to come to check out your trivia. And then he's like,
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: can I call you? And he's like, sure. He's like,
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: I'm going to propose to my girlfriend at your trivia.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: so they dressed as Smithers Smithers and Mr. Burns but
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: it's the um Mr. Burns the Howard Hughes version you know.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: From yeah with the shoeboxes he.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: Has shoeboxes and and and the girl uh um Alice
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: was her name she was Mr. Burns and uh it
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: was so great because he did the Smithers thing they
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: did the lines from the from the episode and um
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: he got down on one knee and people were like,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: Oh my God.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: Did you film it?
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: Yeah, we filmed it. Yeah. I'll actually probably post the
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: video of it. Um, and she said in the perfect Mr.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: Burns voice.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm like, please tell me she says yes.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: Yeah. She said yes, just like Mr. Burns says yes
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: in that episode where they're doing the, honey, I'm home. What? Already? Yes. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: So I was like, oh, man. So they invited me
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: to their wedding. We went to their wedding, and my
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: now wife and I went to their wedding up in Sussex,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: and we invited them to our wedding. um so yeah
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: it was just really special you get special moments like
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: that too at trivia so who knows we'll get engaged
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: this year.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: What what um what costumes are you hoping to see
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: this year is there any that you haven't seen yet
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: you kind of thought i wonder i wish well i
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: thought there would have been a costume for this by now.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: I i've seen everything brendan i feel like i there's
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: so many that i'm like i can't even think even
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: one One costume that was like, how did you even
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: think of that? Is when Homer imagines a lot of
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: boo-boo hair. What a freak. And it's the image of Marge.
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: That's crazy, that one.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: Like, yeah. And somebody dressed up as the freak image
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: of Marge. before she changes to actual Marge in his head. Like,
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: oh my God, like I could never think of that.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: Like that's obscure. I mean, anybody who's trying to get
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: a new costume now at this point and goes off
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: the chart, I can't even, kudos to them. So, and
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: if I see one more person show up, you know,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: Florida or Idaho costume, Every year.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: We've had so many people sending in their pictures. I'm
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: just like, I can't send in, I can't post 20
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: of the same fucking costume, guys.
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: Every year, there's always a Florida.
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: And they seem to get worse and worse. I've posted
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: one that was from that 40th birthday party I mentioned.
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: And they were really good. And he even had his
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: hair like Ralph and stuff. And I was like, it
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: just doesn't compete. It's just pointless. Why waste time? It's great.
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: Great job, guys.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: Love it. It's a great joke. But I've had those
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: since the very first trivia night. So, yeah. It's like, guys,
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: you got to stay tuned. You got to... You got
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: to get up, David.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: Dress up as Gambler instead.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: Yeah, Gambler. You know what? Somebody did dress up as Gambler,
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: I think.
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: Really? What was it? What did it look like?
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: They just had neon claws, and it was like this weird... God,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: I got to share that picture with you, too. I
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: was like... But they couldn't say what they were, but
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: I think they got the neon claws... And so, uh,
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: kind of understood what it was, you know, and they
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: added like dollar signs and things like that. That was
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: another one where it was like purple monkey dishwasher, right? Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: I get what you're doing.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: Well, it sounds like a great time. I'm going to
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: have to eventually come to one, one year when I've
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: got enough money. Yeah. Or you can, or you can
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: bring them to Australia.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: Yeah. Uh, no, we won't be doing that.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: But thank you again, Neil. It's been an absolute pleasure
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: to have you on.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: Yeah, thanks for inviting me, Brendan. Good luck being a
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: dad and... Surviving shingles? Surviving shingles and raising your kids
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: on the Simpsons because, you know, that's what we should
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: be doing as dads.
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: Indeed.
