Transcript
- 0:00So we are still on this wonderful journey of prayer.
- 0:17We got two more weeks left on this before Christmas Eve.
- 0:24Are you guys excited about Christmas?
- 0:25Oh, really?
- 0:26Oh, let's shout for joy.
- 0:29Are you excited for Christmas?
- 0:31Yeah.
- 0:32Come on.
- 0:33I mean, I don't, we've, listen, I was like almost completely, I know others have been,
- 0:41are far more in advance when it comes to Christmas, for some people, start in October.
- 0:49Mine starts Christmas, Thanksgiving Day, right?
- 0:52But all that being said, I've been, it's been nice just having family and to me I think
- 1:00that's going to be the greatest gift.
- 1:02So we're going to be dealing with this issue of prayer and Jesus' prayer and I talked to
- 1:06you guys about the when and the whom.
- 1:10When should you pray, whom should you pray?
- 1:11I think this answers this question, these two questions quite definitively.
- 1:15So we're going to be going through John 17 over the next several weeks.
- 1:20But I want you to hear Jesus' prayer and how he prays for his people.
- 1:25Most people when they read John 17, they have no clue when this happens.
- 1:31They just think it just happens.
- 1:33And in many cases, many preachers or teachers will avoid this particular prayer.
- 1:41In all the years that I've known Christ, I think I've heard the message, a message or
- 1:47a lesson taught on this one time in like my entire life in Christendom.
- 1:55Why?
- 1:57Because this prayer wrecks all kinds of theology, but they miss the glory of this amazing prayer
- 2:09that Christ prays on behalf of his people.
- 2:12Okay?
- 2:13So just to give you some background, if you turn to chapter 13, okay?
- 2:23Chapter 13, Jesus has his triumphal entry comes in and he then throughout that week
- 2:33comes to this point where it's time for Passover meal.
- 2:37So as you guys know the story, they go out, they find all the things they need for the
- 2:45dinner.
- 2:46They sit down, they have dinner.
- 2:47Jesus does all these amazing things.
- 2:49He washes their feet.
- 2:50He breaks bread.
- 2:51He institutes the Lord's Supper there.
- 2:53All those things happen in John 13.
- 2:57And so during this time of John 13, this is the Lord's Supper, his last meal with his
- 3:04people.
- 3:06And so during this time, Jesus literally goes through and he gives them a new commandment.
- 3:13A new commandment I give you that you love one another as I have loved you.
- 3:17He then foretells Peter's denial.
- 3:19He then gives this amazing proclamation that I am the way, the truth, and the life and
- 3:24no one comes to the Father except by me.
- 3:28He then gives the proclamation of the promise of the Holy Spirit that I will not leave you
- 3:34as orphans.
- 3:35I will not leave you without a shepherd.
- 3:39I will not leave you alone, but he promises the Holy Spirit and he promises that the Holy
- 3:45Spirit will guide them in all truth.
- 3:52He also proclaims in chapter 15, I am the true vine and you are the branches.
- 3:56If a man remains me and I in him.
- 3:58All of this is happening at the Supper and on their way to the Garden of Gethsemane.
- 4:07Can you imagine all of these truths are happening within a very few hours?
- 4:14And why does Jesus do this?
- 4:16Because he's been walking with them for three years.
- 4:18He's at the end of his ministry.
- 4:20His hour is about to come and he wants to make sure that he gives them everything that
- 4:25he has taught them and clarifies these things to them.
- 4:28So much to the point that they say that he prays for them and says they know me because
- 4:35of the truth.
- 4:40He also lets them know that because the world hated him, they will hate us also.
- 4:52Chapter 16 comes and he's letting them know that you're not alone.
- 4:59He also encourages them after he says that the world hated me, it's going to hate you.
- 5:04And he encourages them to stand in the truth.
- 5:09In verse 26 of chapter 15 he says, but when the helper comes whom I will send to you from
- 5:15the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about
- 5:22me.
- 5:25He then explains to them that the Holy Spirit will guide them in all truth and that he has
- 5:34overcome the world so fear not.
- 5:36And that's where I want us to begin.
- 5:42Before we go there, I want you to know a few things.
- 5:45We talked about these last week, lastly for the last two weeks, but I want to reiterate
- 5:51them and then I'm only give you a statement from Dr. Sinclair Ferguson.
- 5:56Here it is, you ready?
- 5:57The doctrine of prayer is a means of grace offered according to the will of God expressed
- 6:04in accordance with his word.
- 6:07Prayer is the language of the soul and opening of our hearts before God, John Calvin.
- 6:14Prayer reveals our heart.
- 6:17Prayer is about aligning ourselves with God's will, Matthew 26.
- 6:23Prayer is this word, pros ukami, pros meaning to be near or come before, ukami meaning to
- 6:32pray or to will.
- 6:34Dr. Sinclair Ferguson states it this way, praying is not an isolated spiritual exercise.
- 6:44We pray and we live are not two compartments, are not two compartments.
- 6:54The truth of the matter is we live as we pray and we pray as we live.
- 7:01Dr. Sinclair Ferguson.
- 7:06What Jesus does is he prepares his people and what's interesting, I want you to imagine
- 7:12this, he gets done eating and as he's walking with them and talking with them, he's teaching
- 7:19them these truths, he comes to the end of the lessons.
- 7:26He has nothing more to teach, nothing more to say to them.
- 7:31And on his journey, Jesus does something quite remarkable.
- 7:36Turn to chapter 16, John 16 verse 25.
- 7:44So all the things that I've just mentioned to you, I'm divine and all those things, this
- 7:48is what he says, I have said these things to you in figures of speech.
- 7:53The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell
- 8:00you plainly about the Father.
- 8:03In that day you will ask in my name and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father
- 8:12on your behalf for the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed
- 8:20that I came from God.
- 8:22I came from the Father and I've come into the world and now I am leaving the world and
- 8:29going to the Father.
- 8:30In other words, what he's saying is one day you're not going to need to come to me here
- 8:37on earth.
- 8:41His disciples said, ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech.
- 8:50What?
- 8:51You mean three years and just all of a sudden you had a V8.
- 9:01I understand everything you're saying to me.
- 9:08Look what they say to him.
- 9:09Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you.
- 9:16This is why we believe that you came from God.
- 9:19Three years after watching him do all these miracles, now you know because of what Jesus
- 9:27said to you.
- 9:29Interesting.
- 9:31Jesus answered them, do you now believe?
- 9:36Like now?
- 9:39You believe now.
- 9:40Based on what I just said to you, we had dinner, broke bread, told you I'm the vine, you're
- 9:46the branches, all these things.
- 9:47I say I'm not going to be speaking to you in figurative language in this type of simple
- 9:53speech and now you're turning around going, now I believe you.
- 9:59Interesting.
- 10:03But look what Jesus says, behold, verse 32, behold the hour is coming and indeed has come
- 10:08when you will be scattered each to his own home and will leave me alone, yet I am not
- 10:16alone for the Father is with me.
- 10:20I have said these things to you that in me you may have peace in the world.
- 10:26You will have tribulation, but take heart I have overcome the world.
- 10:29Do you remember previously in chapter 15, if they hated me they're going to hate you?
- 10:37So Jesus says I'm not going to be talking to you in figures of speech anymore, in parables.
- 10:45I'm going to talk plainly to you, I'm going away.
- 10:54It's interesting that Jesus says that you guys are all going to run and you're going
- 11:00to go home and you're going to leave me alone.
- 11:04Because if you remember previously before this statement, Jesus predicted that Peter
- 11:11would deny him.
- 11:13You notice this time Peter doesn't argue because now Jesus says all of you are going to leave
- 11:19me.
- 11:21I'll be left alone.
- 11:27Look what else it says in the end of chapter 16, in the world you will have tribulation,
- 11:36but take heart I have overcome the world.
- 11:39The world is full of suffering.
- 11:42You cannot avoid it.
- 11:44It's part of the deal.
- 11:47So find joy in your suffering.
- 11:50Think about that.
- 11:53Jesus was joyful to suffer for you.
- 11:58Why would we not be joyful to suffer for him?
- 12:02The scripture says that the father counted it joy to destroy his son.
- 12:11So understanding all that as Jesus is walking and having conversation with his disciples,
- 12:19he stops.
- 12:22Just stops walking.
- 12:23Look what it says, and when Jesus has spoken these words, what words?
- 12:2813 to 17.
- 12:31When Jesus had told him all these things from the supper to this moment, look what he says,
- 12:38when Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, Father, the
- 12:44hour has come.
- 12:48My work is finished is what he's saying.
- 12:51This is it.
- 12:54My purpose of coming is here.
- 12:57Father, the hour has come.
- 13:01Glorify your son that the son may glorify you.
- 13:10Now what's interesting about this word glorify, many would think, hey, make him amazing.
- 13:18No, it's more intimate than that.
- 13:22This glorify, this word glorify here, it's dox azo.
- 13:29This word dox azo means to make renown or to render illustrious.
- 13:35Now there are many churches today who are always talking about making Jesus famous.
- 13:42We got to make him renown.
- 13:44Jesus doesn't need your help to be famous.
- 13:46He is already the most famous person to ever live.
- 13:51He was famous before he even created anything.
- 13:55His creation will proclaim him if his people don't.
- 14:01Jesus doesn't need anyone to make him renown.
- 14:03He already is.
- 14:08So this word here to clarify means to cause the dignity or worth of some person or thing
- 14:17to become manifest or acknowledged.
- 14:22Think about glory from that perspective.
- 14:24In other words, Jesus is saying, Father, the hour has come for me, your son, to be manifest
- 14:34and acknowledged as the worthy one.
- 14:40In that your son may manifest and acknowledge you.
- 14:46Think about that.
- 14:48When Jesus went to the cross, who is he acknowledging and manifesting that he is the one who has
- 14:57dignity and worth?
- 14:59His father.
- 15:01And the father was pointing to the son saying, no, he has dignity and worth.
- 15:08And the Holy Spirit points to the son, he has dignity and worth.
- 15:12He is the worthy one.
- 15:14Revelation tells you who the worthy one is.
- 15:18So when we think of glory, it's recognizing that the creation is not glorified because
- 15:26of itself.
- 15:27The creation is glorified because Christ is made manifest or acknowledged as the God of
- 15:34its creation.
- 15:36So I make manifest and acknowledge the worth and dignity of my King and my Savior.
- 15:42That's what glory means.
- 15:48Jesus' praise for the glorification of him and the Father.
- 15:55I want you to understand, pray that God will be glorified in your life so that he is manifest
- 16:03and acknowledged in your life as the King of your life.
- 16:10Verse two, since you have been given authority, since you have given him, meaning Jesus talking
- 16:17about himself, since you Father have given me, given him authority over all flesh.
- 16:27You hear that?
- 16:30Who's in charge of all flesh?
- 16:33Who is the one in authority of all flesh?
- 16:45God puts a monkey wrench in a whole must of stuff, doesn't it?
- 16:49If he has authority over all flesh, that means Satan doesn't.
- 16:55If he has authority over all flesh, it means he's the one in control.
- 16:59He's sovereign.
- 17:01We aren't.
- 17:02If he has authority over all flesh, then he determines who he has mercy on and who he's
- 17:08compassionate to.
- 17:09As a matter of fact, he clarifies this, he has authority over all flesh to do what?
- 17:18To give eternal life to all whom you Father, you have given him.
- 17:29Ouch.
- 17:32Now you know why people don't teach this.
- 17:37Because this whole prayer is about the sovereignty of God.
- 17:41It's all about sovereign grace.
- 17:45This puts a major monkey wrench in all kinds of issues.
- 17:50As a matter of fact, there's a gentleman on YouTube named Dr. Layton, and he uses John
- 17:5917, and he calls it the un-Calvinism of John 17.
- 18:06Really?
- 18:08Have you even gotten to verse two yet?
- 18:13How do you explain that away?
- 18:18If he has all authority over all flesh, and he is the one who gives eternal life to whom
- 18:26the Father has given him, that implies that the Father, that we belong to the Father before
- 18:32the foundation of the world.
- 18:34Isn't that what the scripture says?
- 18:36That your name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life before the creation of all things?
- 18:44And if that's true, Jesus continues to clarify what eternal life is.
- 18:50So what is eternal life?
- 18:51Many would say eternal life is confessing with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe
- 18:56in your heart that God raised him from the dead.
- 18:57No, that is not eternal life.
- 19:00Eternal life is a person.
- 19:03Look what it says, this is eternal life.
- 19:09What is eternal life?
- 19:11This right here.
- 19:12And what is eternal life?
- 19:13That they know you, the only true Elohim, and Yahshua ha-Mashiach, whom you have sent.
- 19:26That's what he says in his language.
- 19:27You are the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
- 19:32Who is eternal life?
- 19:34God is eternal life.
- 19:37You don't get eternal life, you are given eternal life.
- 19:43And you are given life because God is your life.
- 19:48That's what Jesus is saying.
- 19:50You, to know you, the only true God in Jesus Christ whom you have sent, that's eternal
- 19:56life.
- 19:57It's not a prayer.
- 20:02So what's he say?
- 20:04I have made manifest and acknowledged the dignity and worth of you Father on earth.
- 20:12That's what he says, I have glorified you on earth.
- 20:15He has obeyed the Father in every intimate detail, not a dot or a tittle.
- 20:21Was forsaken in the work of Christ on the earth.
- 20:26Having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.
- 20:29In other words, Jesus did it perfectly and without any mistakes.
- 20:35There is nothing undone.
- 20:43Verse five, and now Father, and he's saying Abba, glorify me in your presence with the
- 20:52glory that I had with you before the world existed.
- 20:57In other words, I have veiled myself of the glory that I had with you.
- 21:05And now Father, I am coming back, going home to sit at the right hand of God the Father.
- 21:14And this is what Jesus says, and this word glory means the most excellent state.
- 21:19Hear it in these terms.
- 21:20And now Father, glorify, manifest and acknowledge the worth and the dignity of the Son in your
- 21:32own presence with the most exalted state that I had with you before the world existed.
- 21:42It's kind of amazing.
- 21:46Because here you see the God man who was fully God, truly God, like how R.C.
- 21:52Sproul says, truly God and truly man.
- 21:56John MacArthur says it that way too.
- 22:00And you're seeing him come to the Father saying, bring me to my most exalted state.
- 22:06In other words, I'm going back to where I was.
- 22:10Why?
- 22:11Because God had to become man to die for his creation.
- 22:16As a matter of fact, let's clarify this in John 6 verse 37.
- 22:24John 6, turn there.
- 22:28Just so you see the context, you know it's important.
- 22:32John 6, 37, all that the Father gives me will come to me.
- 22:47I thought I had freedom of choice.
- 22:57President Ecclesiastes says it this way, love is as strong as death.
- 23:03When death calls you, you've got to come.
- 23:05Everyone, when it's time to die, will die.
- 23:09You can't say, no, it's not my choice right now.
- 23:11I'd really rather not do that.
- 23:14No.
- 23:16Love is as strong as death.
- 23:18When the love of God calls you, you've got to come.
- 23:20Jesus says here, all that the Father gives me will come to me.
- 23:27And whoever comes to me, I will never cast out.
- 23:32For I have come down from heaven not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent
- 23:40me.
- 23:41And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given
- 23:48me, but raise him up in the last day.
- 23:52For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son believes in him and should
- 24:00have eternal life, and I will raise him up in the last day, except for one.
- 24:08And the reason why that one was lost is because prophecy must be fulfilled, and everybody
- 24:19knows who that is.
- 24:21Judas was brought in for the sole purpose to betray the Son.
- 24:37That being said, let's look at Jesus acknowledges the Father's will in prayer.
- 24:46God's will for his people is to have eternal life.
- 24:52So when you pray, are you praying for his will?
- 25:00Verse 6.
- 25:02Verse 17, verse 6, I have manifested your name.
- 25:07You might even be able to use the word glorified your name.
- 25:11I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world.
- 25:19Ercomi, you gave me people out of the world.
- 25:28He took you out of one place and placed you in another.
- 25:34Ercomi, my favorite word, one of my favorite words.
- 25:40I have made manifest your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world, yours they
- 25:48were and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.
- 25:55Well, did we ever hear this?
- 26:01Have you ever really listened to a message based on John 17?
- 26:06Has this making you a little bit uncomfortable?
- 26:10Not for me.
- 26:11It gives me so much security.
- 26:23I enjoy lavishing in the amazing faithfulness and goodness of God to me.
- 26:38Look what it says in verse 17.
- 26:42Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you.
- 26:51Wait.
- 26:53What are we learning here?
- 26:56What two doctrines is he proclaiming here?
- 27:00There's actually three.
- 27:01The doctrine of sovereign grace.
- 27:04God is completely sovereign over all things.
- 27:06Second, the doctrine of election.
- 27:08God is the one who chooses.
- 27:10God is the one who does the work.
- 27:11God is the one who brings us out of the world and brings us into his family.
- 27:14It's God the Father.
- 27:16We were his before the foundation of the world and we always were his.
- 27:19We were then given to the son because of the goodness of the Father and the accomplishment
- 27:25of the work of Christ on the cross.
- 27:29What's the second?
- 27:30What's the third doctrine we're learning here?
- 27:32Eternal security.
- 27:34That whoever was the Father has always been the Father and he loses none.
- 27:42So for all of our Arminian friends and charismatic friends who say you can lose your salvation,
- 27:50here's a clear doctrinal proof in the prayer of Jesus that you cannot lose your salvation
- 27:56if you are truly his child.
- 28:03Stand in the security of our amazing God knowing that in his lavishing love toward you and
- 28:10in his promises that he keeps his word consistently all the time.
- 28:17Has nothing to do with you.
- 28:19That should make you feel happy that you have no part in the process of what God does, that
- 28:24in God's goodness and kindness, he does the work.
- 28:28Because if I did any part, I'd think I'd wreck it.
- 28:32Matter of fact, I would because I'm a sinful man.
- 28:35I'm trying to avoid squirrels here.
- 28:58So Jesus here affirms the promises and the will of the Father.
- 29:06We were his from all eternity and will always be his.
- 29:12Why?
- 29:13Because we are elected and are secure in Christ.
- 29:19What kind of comfort and surety do you have now?
- 29:26Jesus says, for I have given them the words that you gave me.
- 29:33You hear that?
- 29:36For I have given them the words that you gave me and they have received them, meaning the
- 29:42words, and have come to know in truth that I came from you.
- 29:47They have believed that you sent me.
- 29:49Why?
- 29:50Do you remember what we read at the end of chapter 16?
- 29:53Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative language.
- 29:59Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you.
- 30:04This is why we believe that you came from God.
- 30:08I want you to hear this.
- 30:10Your experience means absolutely nothing to the reality of the work of Christ on the cross.
- 30:18Do we get the benefit of experiencing a loving kindness from God?
- 30:22Yes.
- 30:23That is not the determining factor of your salvation.
- 30:25The determining factor of your salvation is solely on the truth of the word of God.
- 30:31They lived for three years experiencing the miracles of the hand of the living God in
- 30:36front of them.
- 30:37They actually were sent out to go out and cast out demons and heal the sick.
- 30:42And they still did not understand and comprehend this reality of eternal life.
- 30:47Then all of a sudden when the work is done and he is about to be arrested and taken to
- 30:51the cross, all of a sudden because now he is no longer talking in simple terms, he is
- 30:57just talking plainly to them, they go, now we believe.
- 31:00Isn't that interesting?
- 31:02It is not the experience that determines your eternity.
- 31:06It is the reality of the word of God being active in your life.
- 31:09It is the word of God that brings you to salvation.
- 31:13It is the word of God, the gospel by which the gift of faith comes and is planted in
- 31:18your life by which the Holy Spirit makes alive this faith, the seed of faith, and it produces
- 31:24in you fruit leading to eternal life.
- 31:28That is the point.
- 31:31If it is dependent on the experience, you lost the point.
- 31:35But if it is dependent upon the truth of the word of God, you can absolutely bank on it.
- 31:41That is what he means here.
- 31:42Does that mean that I didn't enjoy seeing God at work in my life as an experience?
- 31:49Yes, but that experience didn't determine my salvation.
- 31:51It is the word of God, the gospel, which determined my salvation, the work of the Holy Spirit
- 31:56in my life through that word.
- 32:01That is exactly what happens here.
- 32:02As a matter of fact, to prove that out, turn to chapter 16, verse 13.
- 32:17Jesus' prayer confirms the truth in his people.
- 32:21We are changed by the ministry of the truth, by the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 32:29Look what it says in chapter 16, verse 13.
- 32:32When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak
- 32:44on his own authority, but whatever he hears, he will speak and he will declare to you the
- 32:52things that are to come.
- 32:54He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
- 33:01All that the Father has is mine.
- 33:04Therefore, I have said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
- 33:09The work of the Holy Spirit is the same work that Jesus did on behalf of the Father when
- 33:13he was on the earth.
- 33:16What's that?
- 33:17What did Jesus declare?
- 33:19Truth.
- 33:20I'm going to say this and I hope it doesn't offend you.
- 33:28Well, sort of.
- 33:31The Charismatics would say that the point of the reality of the truth of God is the
- 33:35experience of God in the working of miracles.
- 33:39That is not true.
- 33:41That's a lie.
- 33:44Because they want you to put your hope in man instead of putting your hope in the word
- 33:48of God.
- 33:52As a matter of fact, Jesus even clarifies this truth to those on the left.
- 33:58Didn't we cast out demons in your name?
- 34:00Didn't we heal the sick in your name?
- 34:02Didn't we do all these workings of miracles in your name?
- 34:05He's going to say, depart from me, you who doers of iniquity.
- 34:07I never knew you.
- 34:10That doesn't mean you're not going to see crazy stuff happen because it's obvious that
- 34:14you do.
- 34:16Some of them is charlatans.
- 34:18All of it's fake.
- 34:22But what does he say to those on his right?
- 34:25Those who practice the word of God.
- 34:28When I was hungry, you fed me.
- 34:30When I was thirsty, you gave me drink.
- 34:31When I was sick, you cared for me.
- 34:33When I was in prison, you visited me.
- 34:35When did we do that?
- 34:37When you did it for the least of these, you did it for me.
- 34:40That's the word of God active in the life of a believer.
- 34:47So the reality of conversion is based on the full truth of the gospel.
- 34:52The word of God being living and active in the life of an individual.
- 34:55So when Paul says that the word of God is living and active, sharper than the double
- 34:58edged sword, divides soul and spirit, bone and marrow, judges the intents of the heart,
- 35:06it's literal.
- 35:08Why do you think people avoid this?
- 35:12Why do you think they don't teach the full counsel of it?
- 35:14Because they don't want the secrets of the heart to be revealed.
- 35:21John 17 verse 9, verse by verse, which we've been doing this whole time, but it's pretty
- 35:32simple.
- 35:33He starts off with this.
- 35:34I am praying for them, meaning his people, specifically the disciples, and I am not praying
- 35:40for the world.
- 35:42Ouch.
- 35:44I don't know if the world would like that today.
- 35:52They would say, God is not tolerant.
- 35:56He's intolerant.
- 35:59Exactly.
- 36:01God is exclusively inclusive.
- 36:06What's that mean?
- 36:07He's exclusive to those who are his people and only inclusive to his people.
- 36:15He says, I am praying for them, but I'm not praying for the world.
- 36:20Ooh, world's in deep trouble.
- 36:25But for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.
- 36:34Are yours, have always been yours, will always be yours, will continue to be yours, and they
- 36:39will never not be yours.
- 36:40That's what this means.
- 36:42Pretty clear.
- 36:46All mine are yours and all yours are mine.
- 36:53I know, gentlemen.
- 36:55I wish we could say that in our marriage.
- 36:58Because all mine is my wife's and all my wife's is my wife's.
- 37:05Winter, winter, chicken dinner.
- 37:06My wife's gone.
- 37:07That's my boy.
- 37:08It's just a joke.
- 37:09I did that over in first service.
- 37:13Nobody laughed.
- 37:17At least you guys get it.
- 37:18Millennials, I love it.
- 37:20Gen Zers.
- 37:21All right.
- 37:22Here we go.
- 37:23Look what he says at the end of that verse, verse 10, and I am glorified in them.
- 37:28In other words, I am made manifest and acknowledged with dignity and worth in their lives.
- 37:37And I am no longer in the world.
- 37:41In other words, I'm out.
- 37:45My days are done.
- 37:47But they are in the world.
- 37:50We're still going to be here and I am coming to you.
- 37:54He said, I'm coming to you.
- 37:55Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one even
- 38:03as we are one.
- 38:04And this is what Jesus is saying.
- 38:06Jesus has been the shepherd of his sheep for three years.
- 38:10He has carefully guarded and protected them.
- 38:14And he is leaving.
- 38:17And what he's saying to the Father is, they don't have a shepherd anymore.
- 38:22You are their shepherd.
- 38:24The Holy Spirit is our shepherd.
- 38:27He does not leave us nor forsake us.
- 38:29He does not leave us alone.
- 38:31He says, I am leaving you.
- 38:32I will not leave you as orphans.
- 38:36I will send you a comforter, a helper, who will come for you and care for you and guide
- 38:42you in all truth.
- 38:43What you're seeing, the ministry of the Holy Spirit, is the work of the shepherding of
- 38:48God in your life.
- 38:50The Holy Spirit is more than just some force.
- 38:52He's not a force at all.
- 38:53He's a person.
- 38:57He's not a genie who gives you everything you wish for.
- 39:00He is a person who is active and living in your life, shepherding your soul.
- 39:06He is your spiritual shepherd.
- 39:11And I am his under shepherd, along with all the other elders in our church.
- 39:20Isn't that interesting?
- 39:23Look what he says, which you have given me, that they may be one even as we are one.
- 39:30What did Jesus do that proved that he was one with the Father?
- 39:34I only speak what my Father says I should speak.
- 39:38I only do the will of my Father.
- 39:43You want to know who, this whole issue of all these churches being ecumenical that we
- 39:49should all be one.
- 39:51That's what he wants for us.
- 39:52That's what he says in his prayer.
- 39:53No, he wants you to be one according to his will and his word.
- 39:58I'm not going to be one with your church over there that's being pro this and pro that.
- 40:03Sorry.
- 40:04That's not a oneness because that's not according to the will and the word of God.
- 40:08You have an issue with that, take it up with Jesus.
- 40:10Not my problem.
- 40:15Jesus is one with the Father because he came and accomplished exactly what the Father said
- 40:20he should do and say and do what the Father said he should do.
- 40:27You want to know what oneness is?
- 40:30Get in line with the will of God, his word.
- 40:32That's oneness.
- 40:35And the reason why churches have a hard time with that is because they don't want God to
- 40:38be the Lord, master in God or their life.
- 40:41They want to determine.
- 40:42They want to be self-determined.
- 40:43Lastly, look what he says, and I will no longer be in the world, but they will be in the world
- 41:00and I am coming to you, Holy Father, keep them in your name, that which you have given
- 41:07me.
- 41:08And what is the name?
- 41:12Yeshua, the God who saves.
- 41:18We will pick up on verse 12 next week.
- 41:23While I was with them, I kept them in your name.
- 41:26What you're going to see is Jesus is praying the doctrine of shepherding concerning his
- 41:33people.
- 41:34So you've seen the doctrine of election, the doctrine of sovereign grace, the doctrine
- 41:39of eternal security, the doctrine of the shepherding of God.
- 41:48And we'll pick up and finish off next week on the rest of this amazing prayer.
- 41:54So here's what I want you to do for homework.
- 41:57I want you guys to listen and read this over and over and over again all week.
- 42:05Listen to what Jesus is saying to the Father on your behalf, because that's what this prayer
- 42:11is about.
- 42:13He's leaving.
- 42:14He has done the work and he says this prayer out loud for his disciples to hear as he is
- 42:20speaking to the Father so that they are left with these truths and how he prays.
- 42:30When he prays, he prays instantly and immediately.
- 42:33To whom he prays?
- 42:35He prays to the Father.
- 42:38What does he pray?
- 42:40He prays that God would be glorified.
- 42:43How does he pray?
- 42:45He prays four things.
- 42:49Prayer, praise and exaltation of God, supplication, prayers on behalf of others, petition, prayers
- 43:00of requests for others and yourself.
- 43:03And what's the last one?
- 43:07Thanksgiving.
- 43:08Give God glory and be thankful for he alone is God.
- 43:13The four components of prayer all follows the model of prayer, which Jesus is doing
- 43:22right here.
- 43:23Yeah, I said cheer.
- 43:24Right here.
- 43:25All right?
- 43:26So, let's pray.
- 43:27Father, I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 43:33Thank you for this amazing prayer.
- 43:35I pray, Lord, that you would continue to guide us in all truth, that we would understand
- 43:40and know your will, that the full counsel of your word is proclaimed, that we would
- 43:45be clearer in understanding not only your word, but who you are, confident and sure
- 43:53of our God and our Savior.
- 43:54We thank you and praise you.
- 43:55In Jesus' name, amen.
