- 0:04Speaker 1: It is to go out the company line presented by
- 0:06Speaker 1: FanDuel on the FanDuel sportsbook. Roger McDowell is going to
- 0:10Speaker 1: join us at about ten to fifteen minutes. A member
- 0:13Speaker 1: of the eighty six Mets. Taylor had no idea who
- 0:16Speaker 1: he was, but he knows now because he's done some researcher.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Roger McDowell. I can't wait to speak to him. But
- 0:21Speaker 1: let's get to the playing games. Is he last night?
- 0:25Speaker 1: I told Steph Curry before we got off the area yesterday,
- 0:29Speaker 1: do me a favor. I don't want to see limited minutes.
- 0:31Speaker 1: It's winner go home time. And he gave them an
- 0:35Speaker 1: amazing game, not a good game, an amazing.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Steph Curry game.
- 0:38Speaker 1: And now, unfortunately for me, Golden State advances because I'm
- 0:41Speaker 1: tired of the Golden State Warriors.
- 0:43Speaker 3: I mean, they just advanced for one more game. They're
- 0:45Speaker 3: not in the playoffs just yet. They still got another team.
- 0:48Speaker 3: But I thought, you're gonna tell me how many mints
- 0:49Speaker 3: he play because didn't actually look okay, thirty six. Yeah,
- 0:52Speaker 3: so he went about five six minutes over the minutes
- 0:55Speaker 3: restriction that was told. As soon as you saw he
- 0:58Speaker 3: was starting, I was like, yeah, there's there's definitely no
- 1:02Speaker 3: way he's just gonna play thirty minutes like you. It's
- 1:05Speaker 3: a knee thing, it's a maintenance thing. He would rather
- 1:09Speaker 3: limit himself in Game one of the playoffs than in
- 1:12Speaker 3: a win or go home game. So yeah, I thought
- 1:15Speaker 3: the uh, it was such a vintage performance from Steph,
- 1:19Speaker 3: but you saw his buddy gave him another vintage performance.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Right, No, it did not. What happened Draymond Green did something.
- 1:25Speaker 4: Al Horford my man?
- 1:27Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Al Horford waits the Warriors.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Yeah, that's been all year.
- 1:33Speaker 3: He dropped four to three pointers and was shooting them
- 1:36Speaker 3: with the kind of catch and shoot like quickness that
- 1:39Speaker 3: I don't think we've ever seen him shoot before. This
- 1:41Speaker 3: man is so perfect for this team. And yeah, he
- 1:44Speaker 3: came up huge right when they needed it.
- 1:46Speaker 2: It's a Dann Marino like release.
- 1:47Speaker 4: I mean, it really is my Dominican brother.
- 1:51Speaker 3: But what's crazy about this game is, like, what's wild
- 1:55Speaker 3: about Steph and Draymond is I don't know if I've
- 1:58Speaker 3: ever seen a duo in this kind of unison, right,
- 2:03Speaker 3: because we talk about what Michael and Scotti, right, the
- 2:05Speaker 3: first duo you think of Kobe and Shaq even if
- 2:09Speaker 3: you go to like Wade and Lebron, they were just
- 2:11Speaker 3: so talented, and yes they complimented each other, but they
- 2:14Speaker 3: didn't play like they're making music, like Steph and and Draymond.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Like Draymond knows exactly where to be if the defense
- 2:22Speaker 3: is lagging off of anybody, he knows exactly who to
- 2:25Speaker 3: set the screen on, where and when Steph's gonna come around.
- 2:28Speaker 3: And then Steph just he's an alien. He's more alien
- 2:31Speaker 3: than Victim wimbn yam. I've said this before. But you
- 2:34Speaker 3: give him, you know, just the slightest bit of space,
- 2:36Speaker 3: and he can turn any shot into a great shot.
- 2:38Speaker 4: And I just don't think I've.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Ever seen a pair of teammates work in unison quite
- 2:43Speaker 3: like those two on the offensive end.
- 2:44Speaker 4: On the defensive end, Steph doesn't.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Really right the reason I say unfortunately the Warriors won.
- 2:49Speaker 1: I know they have another playing game. There's no way
- 2:52Speaker 1: the referees in the NBA are allowing them to lose
- 2:55Speaker 1: that game. They want the Warriors in the playoffs. They
- 2:57Speaker 1: want Steph Curry in the playoffs.
- 2:59Speaker 2: I said it.
- 3:00Speaker 5: Stude, there was. There was a bold take from Steve
- 3:02Speaker 5: Kerr after the game. He says is he said, Draymond
- 3:06Speaker 5: Green is the best defender I've ever seen in my life.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Right, well, he was on a team with Michael Jordan
- 3:12Speaker 1: and Scottie Pippen.
- 3:13Speaker 2: What is he talking about, Jesus?
- 3:15Speaker 3: But this is this is the craziest part about this.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Like Kawhi Leonard STU, Kawhi Leonard never says anything, not
- 3:23Speaker 3: even anything of significance. Right he said of Draymond Green,
- 3:28Speaker 3: one of the best defenders ever. It was hard to
- 3:30Speaker 3: even get good shots off man. Kawhi Leonard is complimenting
- 3:34Speaker 3: you like that. I'm starting to think maybe Steve Kurrz
- 3:36Speaker 3: right because those last two steals from Draymond absolute wrecked
- 3:40Speaker 3: the offense wrecked it.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Yeah, and Kawhi was bad last night, which is odd
- 3:44Speaker 1: because Kawhi can get his shots off of anybody. He's
- 3:48Speaker 1: proven that throughout the course of his of his career here,
- 3:51Speaker 1: but is he What you said about Steph got me
- 3:54Speaker 1: thinking whose career would you rather have? Steph Curry's career
- 3:59Speaker 1: or Lebron James His career.
- 4:02Speaker 4: That's actually a.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Great question, And I think when I think part of
- 4:07Speaker 3: Steph's desire secretly to win another title is to have
- 4:10Speaker 3: one more than Lebron because then because then he'll say,
- 4:14Speaker 3: why wouldn't you want my career? I didn't have the pressure.
- 4:17Speaker 3: I'm beloved. I won more championships than you, and you
- 4:23Speaker 3: know I would say, did.
- 4:25Speaker 4: It in a slightly more? I don't know.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Is it more joyful? Is it happier? Are you having
- 4:32Speaker 3: more fun watching Steph? Or do you have more fun
- 4:34Speaker 3: watching like prime Lebron? Because prime Lebron was ridiculous. But
- 4:38Speaker 3: there aren't that many times where I'm just like, oh
- 4:40Speaker 3: my god, this guy is absolutely insane the way I
- 4:43Speaker 3: do when I'm watching Steph.
- 4:45Speaker 1: He had Game six of the Celtics series when he
- 4:47Speaker 1: was a member of the Heat that was, uh.
- 4:48Speaker 4: But it comes with like tension, you know what I mean?
- 4:50Speaker 1: Yeah, but the bar has been set so high by himself,
- 4:53Speaker 1: by the way he contributed to that, to the expectations.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I mean, he annointed himself the king his rookie years,
- 5:00Speaker 1: so the expectations were enormous. I don't mind watching it
- 5:02Speaker 1: with the stakes attached. Steph just came about it and
- 5:05Speaker 1: went about it in a different way. He's more fun
- 5:08Speaker 1: to watch. He's more entertaining to watch. There's no question
- 5:10Speaker 1: about it. He plays like he doesn't have the weight
- 5:12Speaker 1: of the world on his shoulders, you know, and.
- 5:14Speaker 5: Is he I think I have a way to vocalize
- 5:16Speaker 5: the point that you were making. If you tell me
- 5:19Speaker 5: Lebron James scores fifty points, here are the highlights, and
- 5:23Speaker 5: you tell me Steph Curry scores fifty points, here are
- 5:26Speaker 5: the highlights. Which one do I which one would I
- 5:28Speaker 5: rather watch? I'd rather watch Steph Curry. If you're telling
- 5:31Speaker 5: me he scores fifty.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Thanks, very interesting for making my point in a much
- 5:35Speaker 3: more efficient way.
- 5:36Speaker 1: So he's more aesthetically pleasing, Is that what we're saying?
- 5:39Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 5:39Speaker 3: And I mean again, And it just depends on what
- 5:41Speaker 3: you want to look at, right, because I don't know
- 5:44Speaker 3: if it's just boring to see Lebron jump so high
- 5:46Speaker 3: as often as he did back in the day.
- 5:48Speaker 4: It's not boring, But yeah.
- 5:50Speaker 3: I think more people just enjoy watching step So to
- 5:53Speaker 3: answer your question, I think at the end of the day, yeah,
- 5:56Speaker 3: I think more people will say which career would be
- 5:58Speaker 3: more enjoyable to record eight it's probably stiffs.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, it's interesting.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Lebron's a guy who's always looking to make the smart
- 6:06Speaker 1: basketball move, make the right pass, towards the end of
- 6:09Speaker 1: the game, and Steph is the guy different mentalities is
- 6:12Speaker 1: he Steph is like, no, that pass is coming to me.
- 6:14Speaker 2: I'm taking the fucking shot.
- 6:15Speaker 3: You know, because it's such a good If I can
- 6:17Speaker 3: get it off, it's an amazing shot because he's an alien.
- 6:21Speaker 3: There was another playing game yesterday. It was the Sixers
- 6:25Speaker 3: being the Magic and there wasn't that too much crazy
- 6:27Speaker 3: interesting about it. But I just laughed at this afterwards.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Du gats Kyle Lowry is on the Sixers. If you
- 6:32Speaker 3: want to hit me with a what what? That doesn't
- 6:35Speaker 3: really play, but he's still on that team.
- 6:37Speaker 4: That's his hometown.
- 6:38Speaker 3: After the game, during a postgame interview, Tyres Maxie just
- 6:40Speaker 3: announces that this is this is Kyle Lowry's last year.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Kyle Lowry has not said anything, and so he just
- 6:46Speaker 3: announced his teammates retirement. So nice to have out of
- 6:49Speaker 3: Tyree's Maxie there we got.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Perhaps he he wants to allow Kyle to announce that
- 6:55Speaker 1: on his own terms.
- 6:55Speaker 2: I mean, why is he doing that? What is MAXI
- 6:58Speaker 2: doing that? What's happening?
- 7:00Speaker 5: I mean, is he When I was watching that Sixers
- 7:02Speaker 5: Magic game, the most clear takeaway that I had from
- 7:07Speaker 5: that game was I'm watching the Sixers. They they had
- 7:11Speaker 5: this whole rebrand where they go to this red and
- 7:14Speaker 5: blue collarway. But last night they break out the black jerseys,
- 7:18Speaker 5: which they've been wearing a lot more recently, the black
- 7:21Speaker 5: retro jerseys.
- 7:22Speaker 4: Yeah, early two thousands.
- 7:23Speaker 5: They have to go back to that look. It is,
- 7:25Speaker 5: it is far superior.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Well, they said they're staying with that for the rest
- 7:29Speaker 3: of the playoffs, so everybody, and that was the uniform
- 7:33Speaker 3: when they did make the finals with Alan Iverson against
- 7:35Speaker 3: the Lakers in two thousand, two thousands.
- 7:38Speaker 4: And so yeah, that's they're trying to recreate that feeling.
- 7:41Speaker 3: But the biggest takeaway I got from last night was
- 7:44Speaker 3: put like eight to ten pounds on VJ Edgecomb.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Oh my god, that.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Guy might be the best guard in the league. He's
- 7:50Speaker 3: so explosive and so good and so young. But I
- 7:55Speaker 3: started the games too. I completely forgot that Joe El
- 7:58Speaker 3: Embiid wasn't going to play because this year it's a
- 8:01Speaker 3: crazy random appendaicitis appendix.
- 8:04Speaker 4: Surgery, and now we have no idea when he's coming back.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Why do I don't know? The medical guys just messed
- 8:09Speaker 4: with MBAD so much they just hate Philadelphia.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Taylor put it on the pole.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Can you be surprised if you tune into a Sixers
- 8:16Speaker 1: game and Bead is not playing? Great question, It's a coin.
- 8:18Speaker 1: It's a coin toss every single game. I mean right
- 8:22Speaker 1: up at the game time, right, you should not be
- 8:24Speaker 1: You should be more surprised if he plays.
- 8:27Speaker 2: You're right?
- 8:29Speaker 1: I mean, wait, so who do the Hornets play now?
- 8:31Speaker 1: They play the Philadelphia seventy six.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Ers, right, play the Magic in or for a chance
- 8:35Speaker 4: at the eight teen?
- 8:35Speaker 1: Okay, all right, so they played them at Tailor. We're good,
- 8:38Speaker 1: I mean America's team. It seems like we're good, right,
- 8:40Speaker 1: I mean.
- 8:41Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm onto that the Magic are like seven and
- 8:44Speaker 5: ten over the past month. It seems like they can't
- 8:46Speaker 5: get at their own way.
- 8:47Speaker 6: Stu.
- 8:47Speaker 5: The other thought I had from Sixers Magic last night
- 8:52Speaker 5: and what if I was on first Take, what I would.
- 8:54Speaker 6: Have led with?
- 8:55Speaker 5: Are the Sixers better without Joe embiid?
- 8:58Speaker 2: Oh?
- 8:58Speaker 6: Wow?
- 9:00Speaker 2: No?
- 9:05Speaker 5: There.
- 9:05Speaker 3: I think I think the Hornets might be in a
- 9:07Speaker 3: little trouble. Mostly I think I said on radio. I
- 9:09Speaker 3: know I said on radio yesterday that I was a
- 9:12Speaker 3: good job by the Hornets coach. Who I'm not going
- 9:14Speaker 3: to give you his name by not playing a nipple
- 9:17Speaker 3: down the stretch. It was his defense that was keeping
- 9:20Speaker 3: him off the floor, and his defense against the magic
- 9:23Speaker 3: and some of those bigger bodies. If it's not good,
- 9:26Speaker 3: you're not going to see a whole lot of canipple.
- 9:27Speaker 3: But speaking of the Hornets, due, did you see the
- 9:29Speaker 3: other news that came out of Charlotte?
- 9:31Speaker 2: No? No, just should always say no. I want to
- 9:36Speaker 2: tell you something real quick.
- 9:37Speaker 1: I sent a request to get the Hornets coach on
- 9:40Speaker 1: yesterday and they're working on it. But all I said
- 9:43Speaker 1: in my request is I want to see if coach
- 9:46Speaker 1: can join us for.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Ten to fifteen minutes. Because I didn't know his name.
- 9:51Speaker 4: I'm still not going to tell it too.
- 9:55Speaker 3: So apparently LaMelo balls flagrant fel was looked at by
- 9:59Speaker 3: the league and it was assessed as retroactively a flagrant too,
- 10:04Speaker 3: which would have gotten him ejected, and it also got
- 10:08Speaker 3: him a fine.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Now was right?
- 10:10Speaker 3: People want to complain and say everything. By the way, also,
- 10:13Speaker 3: LeVar Ball went on a little rant which only only
- 10:16Speaker 3: speaks to my exact point from last yesterday that if
- 10:20Speaker 3: he was raised by less of a look at me father,
- 10:22Speaker 3: perhaps Lmento Ball would be the best player in the.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Specific You said, Del Curry, Well, yeah, Del carry what better?
- 10:30Speaker 4: What better dad to choose than Steph Curry's father?
- 10:33Speaker 2: But why would you look at Dublin? You look at
- 10:35Speaker 2: his son though, I mean, you know, I mean anyway, Sorry.
- 10:38Speaker 3: I'm not really sure how Steph Curry's kids are going
- 10:40Speaker 3: to be raised yet they're still young. So I take
- 10:45Speaker 3: that information about the Heat effectively getting screwed by the
- 10:48Speaker 3: Charlotte Hornets and double it down with the information that
- 10:51Speaker 3: the Heat gets screwed by both the Charlotte Hornets and
- 10:54Speaker 3: the league with the Terry Roseier trade. And now I've
- 10:57Speaker 3: never been more convinced that the Heat's going to get
- 10:59Speaker 3: a little favor from the league, little nudge, get a
- 11:01Speaker 3: top four pick in the NBA Draft, which absolutely they're
- 11:04Speaker 3: gonna move up in the draft lottery. They're only going
- 11:06Speaker 3: to have, like, depending on who wins, I believe, between
- 11:09Speaker 3: the the Warriors and the Suns, they're only going to
- 11:13Speaker 3: have somewhere between a four and seven percent chance of
- 11:15Speaker 3: moving into the top four.
- 11:16Speaker 4: It's gonna happen. It's gonna happen.
- 11:18Speaker 3: If you're a Heat fan, it's your best chance at
- 11:20Speaker 3: having hope is this conspiracy right here?
- 11:23Speaker 1: If I told you you could have the top four
- 11:25Speaker 1: pick or the NBA would reverse the outcome of the
- 11:28Speaker 1: game against the Hornets, which one do you want?
- 11:30Speaker 4: Give me that top four pick?
- 11:32Speaker 3: Because you know what the heat ticker against the Orlando
- 11:34Speaker 3: Magic is this year oh and five. Somehow they played
- 11:37Speaker 3: each other five times because of the n season tournament.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Couldn't win a game. They weren't gonna win in Orlando,
- 11:42Speaker 4: but they we do anyway, Stull, You.
- 11:44Speaker 6: Know what that just was? We a conspiracy.
- 11:50Speaker 2: You had to slow down before you said it.
- 11:52Speaker 4: Huh, I like it?
- 11:53Speaker 2: Say sure, it was coming out all right.
- 11:57Speaker 4: I don't even want to be a conspiracy guy. But
- 11:59Speaker 4: when you put it like that, I'm bad.
- 12:01Speaker 2: I mean, how did he turn this?
- 12:03Speaker 1: We're talking an NBA playoffs, it's the second season.
- 12:06Speaker 2: It someways brought it all back to the heat.
- 12:08Speaker 4: It's some news. It's sends it right here in my headline.
- 12:10Speaker 6: Sticks.
- 12:11Speaker 2: It's only big news to you.
- 12:12Speaker 1: I'm gonna sprint away from the heat because it's a sign.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Anytime you bring it up, it's a sign I need.
- 12:18Speaker 2: To go to a happier place.

- 14:10Speaker 1: He takes me back to my childhood nineteen eighty six. Specifically,
- 14:14Speaker 1: Roger McDowell, a nineteen eighty six World Series champion with the.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Mets, has a new book.
- 14:18Speaker 1: App Hot Foot, My High Jaints and Upside Down Live
- 14:23Speaker 1: with the World champion New York Mets that came out
- 14:26Speaker 1: last LA this week it's available wherever you purchase your books.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Why'd you write the book? I'm a best selling author, I.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Can tell you that, and my reasons for writing the
- 14:34Speaker 1: book were simple money.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Why'd you write the book?
- 14:38Speaker 8: It wasn't for money, obviously, because I don't think it's
- 14:41Speaker 8: going to get on any bestseller list.
- 14:43Speaker 6: You know, you never know, but I just I don't know.
- 14:48Speaker 6: I got to.
- 14:50Speaker 8: Talking to the co author, Doug Feldman. He was doing
- 14:53Speaker 8: a book. This is probably a year and a half ago.
- 14:55Speaker 8: He was doing a book on the Saint Louis Cardinals,
- 14:57Speaker 8: and he had gotten in connect connection with Jay Horwitz,
- 15:01Speaker 8: who was our PR director all those years with the
- 15:04Speaker 8: Mets and still maintains a.
- 15:07Speaker 6: Job with the Mets.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Legend.
- 15:09Speaker 8: Yes, he's been everywhere, He's done everything, and he knows everybody.
- 15:13Speaker 8: So anyway, he connected us and Doug was writing a book.
- 15:18Speaker 8: Doug Feldman, the co author, he was writing a book
- 15:20Speaker 8: on the Saint Louis Cardinals and the Mets rivalry during
- 15:23Speaker 8: the mid eighties, and so he wanted.
- 15:25Speaker 6: To talk to me.
- 15:26Speaker 8: So we had a conversation and over probably a month
- 15:30Speaker 8: of two or three conversations. It was just an easy,
- 15:33Speaker 8: easy conversation and I could tell he was a baseball fan.
- 15:39Speaker 8: He grew up a Cardinals fan, but he was a
- 15:41Speaker 8: baseball fan and he had a passion for the game.
- 15:43Speaker 8: And so probably a month after this, he calls me
- 15:47Speaker 8: out and says, hey, you know, Triumph is possibly looking
- 15:51Speaker 8: for an opportunity to do something with the fortieth anniversary
- 15:54Speaker 8: of the Mets. And as you know, everybody and their
- 15:59Speaker 8: brother wrote on that team, wrote a book about the
- 16:02Speaker 8: eighty six ball club or the Mets, right, and the
- 16:06Speaker 8: things that went on. That being said, I said, you
- 16:09Speaker 8: know what, I why not? I just wanted to get
- 16:13Speaker 8: some stories out there and not embellished the stories like
- 16:18Speaker 8: some of the ones I had read. I just wanted
- 16:20Speaker 8: to have a truthfully rendition of my career, my early
- 16:28Speaker 8: childhood days, growing up, the people that helped me along
- 16:31Speaker 8: the way, and the people that were very important to me.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Who embellished. Who are you angling that at? Hey, come on,
- 16:38Speaker 1: give me someone.
- 16:40Speaker 6: You know what it said, there's enough of them out there,
- 16:42Speaker 6: you pick.
- 16:43Speaker 1: One, Taylor as he was writing at us.
- 16:47Speaker 2: So I'm gonna be honest with you.
- 16:48Speaker 1: When I first agreed to do this interview, Taylor's thirty one.
- 16:51Speaker 1: He's my executive producer. He's also a Yankee fan. He
- 16:54Speaker 1: asked me, who the fuck is Roger McDowell, And I said, listen,
- 16:59Speaker 1: this is a personal and this is selfish.
- 17:01Speaker 2: This is someone who brings me.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Back to a better time in my sports fandom life,
- 17:06Speaker 1: back to the mid eighties.
- 17:07Speaker 2: That was the height for me.
- 17:08Speaker 1: And then as he started writing out notes for this interview,
- 17:11Speaker 1: he realized, just what a badass you are?
- 17:14Speaker 2: I tell her, Am I wrong? Am I giving him
- 17:16Speaker 2: any wrong information here?
- 17:18Speaker 6: No?
- 17:19Speaker 5: Definitely, definitely correct, Roger. I love baseball, and when I
- 17:23Speaker 5: was reading more and more about the eighty six Mets,
- 17:26Speaker 5: I was blown away when I got to that sixteen
- 17:29Speaker 5: inning game and only four pitchers pitched for the Mets
- 17:32Speaker 5: in a sixteen inning game?
- 17:34Speaker 2: What it's time?
- 17:35Speaker 6: Yeah, that was unbelievable.
- 17:36Speaker 8: You know, obviously it's it wouldn't never happened today, but
- 17:40Speaker 8: it's what we had, I mean, and that's you know,
- 17:44Speaker 8: Davy Johnson's forethought of you know, how he uses bullpen
- 17:47Speaker 8: and how he used his pitching staff, and we were
- 17:50Speaker 8: all fresh, and so you know, it turned out pretty good.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Roger.
- 17:54Speaker 1: So where did where did the I want to get
- 17:57Speaker 1: to stories about the eighty six Mets and what it
- 17:59Speaker 1: was like to be a part of that team. But
- 18:00Speaker 1: the high jinks, part of the hijink side of you,
- 18:03Speaker 1: where did that come from?
- 18:06Speaker 6: Probably my dad? My dad.
- 18:09Speaker 8: My dad was a fun loving guy and always I
- 18:12Speaker 8: don't know if I remember any particular practical, practical jokes.
- 18:17Speaker 8: I just remember that he always liked to make people laugh.
- 18:21Speaker 8: And I guess I grew up with that and it
- 18:24Speaker 8: was part of my my my persona that I just
- 18:28Speaker 8: enjoyed making people laugh. And hopefully this is something I learned, uh,
- 18:33Speaker 8: not only from my dad, but from Davy Johnson, is
- 18:36Speaker 8: that one there's a time and a place, and two
- 18:40Speaker 8: that don't do anything that is going to really embarrass anybody.
- 18:45Speaker 8: It's about having fun and enjoying the moment and uh
- 18:49Speaker 8: maybe picking out an opportunity, uh like the Rusty Stop
- 18:52Speaker 8: of Whig Day that that we all had and everybody
- 18:55Speaker 8: got the that's a funny story, you know, still with
- 19:00Speaker 8: It's like, this was like my second year in the
- 19:03Speaker 8: big leagues and I got this idea, you know, because
- 19:06Speaker 8: they were going to have Russy Stop Day and Russy
- 19:09Speaker 8: Stopped being you know, the iconic figure in baseball and
- 19:13Speaker 8: the Mets and expos and yeah astros. But anyway, you know,
- 19:17Speaker 8: he and Keith were really really good friends, and so
- 19:21Speaker 8: I didn't want to do something that was getting pissed
- 19:24Speaker 8: off right right. So I went to Keith. I said, Keith,
- 19:30Speaker 8: this is what I like to do. I said, you know,
- 19:32Speaker 8: can you pass it by Rusty? Uh see if see
- 19:35Speaker 8: if it's a go or not, or whether we have
- 19:37Speaker 8: to abort. And so he's uh, he was like, yeah,
- 19:40Speaker 8: I'll talk to him. So he came back and said
- 19:43Speaker 8: it's a go. And so you know, that's when I
- 19:46Speaker 8: went out and got the those twenty five redheaded wigs
- 19:49Speaker 8: and we all wore them on the field for Russy
- 19:52Speaker 8: Stop Day. And uh, I think he enjoyed it, and
- 19:54Speaker 8: I know that we enjoyed it, and I think the
- 19:56Speaker 8: fans enjoyed it as well.
- 19:58Speaker 2: So good that team was.
- 19:59Speaker 1: So it was so wound up, There were so many expectations,
- 20:03Speaker 1: There were so many big personalities inside that clubhouse, whether
- 20:06Speaker 1: it be Keith, whether it be Lenny Dykstra.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Did you feel like you needed.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Someone to kind of break that up, to give some levity,
- 20:12Speaker 1: to provide some humor to that group of players, because
- 20:15Speaker 1: you could feel the pressure. There was pressure on that scene.
- 20:18Speaker 8: Yeah, no, I really didn't go into it on a
- 20:20Speaker 8: day to day basis and say, hey, what do you
- 20:22Speaker 8: got to do to you know, to break up the
- 20:25Speaker 8: break up, you know, the tension here and have some fun.
- 20:29Speaker 8: It was just, you know, I traveled in the cities
- 20:34Speaker 8: that we played in. I traveled and I got out
- 20:36Speaker 8: in the city and I walked around. I'd find masquerade shops,
- 20:40Speaker 8: or I'd find joke stores, or I'd find you know,
- 20:43Speaker 8: Spencer's Gifts or whatever it may be. And you know,
- 20:47Speaker 8: and just through.
- 20:48Speaker 6: Our daily.
- 20:51Speaker 8: Our daily baseball life, I would see something and get
- 20:54Speaker 8: an idea, and you know how it would relate to
- 21:00Speaker 8: bringing some levity to situations maybe during the course of
- 21:07Speaker 8: you know, the season, or during a baseball game or
- 21:10Speaker 8: whatever it may be.
- 21:12Speaker 1: His new book is out, Roger McDowell with Us Hot Foot,
- 21:14Speaker 1: My High Jinks at Upside Down Life with the World
- 21:17Speaker 1: champion New York Mets. Roger, what was it like to
- 21:19Speaker 1: be a member of that team in nineteen eighty six
- 21:21Speaker 1: World champion New York Mets.
- 21:23Speaker 8: And you know, so you got to remember, I was
- 21:25Speaker 8: a kid, I was still a kid. Second year in
- 21:28Speaker 8: the big leagues, and you know, my first year in
- 21:31Speaker 8: the big leagues.
- 21:32Speaker 6: It was you know, I stayed. I stayed pretty much
- 21:34Speaker 6: to myself.
- 21:35Speaker 8: I stayed in the corner because I didn't want anybody,
- 21:37Speaker 8: especially when of somebody from the coach staff to come
- 21:39Speaker 8: up and say, hey, listen, Davey needs to see you
- 21:41Speaker 8: in his office, because I definitely didn't want to go
- 21:46Speaker 8: back to Triple A, back to the minor leagues, and
- 21:48Speaker 8: I wanted to do whatever I could to stay in
- 21:51Speaker 8: the big leagues. And so I pretty much, you know,
- 21:55Speaker 8: was was you know, eyes open, ears.
- 21:59Speaker 6: Open, and mouth closed.
- 22:01Speaker 8: Yeah, and even into eighty six, even though I had
- 22:04Speaker 8: a more important role toward the anty eighty five season
- 22:09Speaker 8: as getting to be co closer with Jesse and moving
- 22:12Speaker 8: into eighty six and getting that opportunity through that year
- 22:16Speaker 8: as well and the following years.
- 22:19Speaker 6: But still I was still a youngster on the team.
- 22:22Speaker 8: I mean, you know, you had the mainstay of Mookie
- 22:25Speaker 8: Wilson who had been there in the lean years. You
- 22:27Speaker 8: know that you had, you had Keith, You had Gary
- 22:31Speaker 8: Carter that came over in eighty five. He had Ray
- 22:33Speaker 8: and Knight who'd been through, uh, you know, the trials
- 22:36Speaker 8: and tripulations of big league seasons, and so you had
- 22:40Speaker 8: these veteran guys, uh, mixed in with a lot of
- 22:44Speaker 8: young guys. And I think that's where I guess some
- 22:47Speaker 8: of the comfortable myths came in. Was there were the
- 22:52Speaker 8: younger guys that I came up and played with in
- 22:54Speaker 8: my leagues were now in the big leagues. You know,
- 22:56Speaker 8: the the Ricky Aguilera and the Kevin Mitchell Good and
- 23:01Speaker 8: Lenny Dykstra. Lenny was my first roommate when I signed
- 23:06Speaker 8: went to Shelby, North Carolina and single a ball. So
- 23:09Speaker 8: you know, there were there were some comfortableness there, but
- 23:12Speaker 8: also mixed in with the veterans. And uh, I don't
- 23:16Speaker 8: want to use the term of we knew our place.
- 23:19Speaker 6: But we will.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Keith made sure of it. I'm sure I'll go ahead, Taylor.
- 23:25Speaker 5: Roger, I was reading about some of the high jinks
- 23:27Speaker 5: like soaking Lenny Dyster's bat and rubbing alcohol and lighting
- 23:31Speaker 5: it on fire, tricking Tommy Lesorda into eating dog treats
- 23:37Speaker 5: in the clubhouse.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Look, how brownie is Taylor?
- 23:41Speaker 4: Do you do you have a favorite?
- 23:45Speaker 6: Not really? Uh?
- 23:46Speaker 8: You know, all you know combined I, as I've said
- 23:51Speaker 8: for forty plus years now, the baseball field is my
- 23:56Speaker 8: best office in the world.
- 23:57Speaker 6: It was my education. That's what I know, and that's
- 24:00Speaker 6: what I learned.
- 24:02Speaker 8: And you know a lot of people go to school
- 24:05Speaker 8: for you know, various occupations, but mine was baseball and
- 24:09Speaker 8: there was something that I uh dreamed about as a
- 24:12Speaker 8: kid when I was four or five six years old.
- 24:15Speaker 8: I got to see that goal achieved and my dream achieved.
- 24:20Speaker 8: But getting back to the question of what was her
- 24:24Speaker 8: favorite one, No, you know it was I you know,
- 24:28Speaker 8: the title of the book says it for itself. I
- 24:30Speaker 8: mean the hot foot. I mean everywhere put it this way.
- 24:33Speaker 6: Everywhere. When I go back to New York. Now it's hey, hey, Roger,
- 24:36Speaker 6: can you show me a hot foot?
- 24:37Speaker 8: Come on, come on, rad Hey, I don't want to
- 24:40Speaker 8: get too close to you might give me a hot foot,
- 24:43Speaker 8: you know, it's like and then So it was an
- 24:45Speaker 8: easy title.
- 24:46Speaker 6: For me to come up with. But you know, it's uh,
- 24:51Speaker 6: it was just the day to day enjoyment of being
- 24:55Speaker 6: at the field is what I got out of it.
- 24:58Speaker 1: What was the thought behind the rubbing alcohol and lighting
- 25:01Speaker 1: Lenny's bat on fire.
- 25:03Speaker 6: He was in a slump, of course, he was.
- 25:06Speaker 8: He was, he was he was in a slump, and
- 25:09Speaker 8: I don't know how it happened. Uh, but I I
- 25:13Speaker 8: found out. I guess probably you know, dumb me. Years
- 25:17Speaker 8: and years go by, but I found out when you
- 25:19Speaker 8: put rubbing alcohol and you let a match to it,
- 25:21Speaker 8: it's basically a clear flame and there's some blue tint
- 25:26Speaker 8: to it. And so I got the idea, you know what,
- 25:29Speaker 8: you know, I heard had heard Lenny talking about you know,
- 25:31Speaker 8: he's in a slump.
- 25:32Speaker 6: You know, he needs he needs this, he needs that.
- 25:35Speaker 6: You know, he doesn't know how to get out of it.
- 25:37Speaker 8: And so I got the idea, you know, he's leading
- 25:40Speaker 8: off the inning, you know, And I had I had
- 25:43Speaker 8: taken a five gallon bucket and got from the trainers
- 25:46Speaker 8: a bunch of rubbing alcohol, and I dipped his bat,
- 25:49Speaker 8: you know, the head of his bat, and then rubbing alcohol,
- 25:52Speaker 8: and uh. And so I'm like, I wonder if this worked,
- 25:55Speaker 8: because you know, the bats put Barney Show on him,
- 25:57Speaker 8: and so anyway, get out to the get out to
- 26:01Speaker 8: the dugout and take his bat out there. And I
- 26:05Speaker 8: got matches, obviously, and so I light his bat up
- 26:09Speaker 8: and I put it in the bat rack, and Wally
- 26:12Speaker 8: knew about it, and he's hitting second. So Lenny takes
- 26:15Speaker 8: his bat his game route, and you can see that
- 26:19Speaker 8: there's some vapors coming from the head of his bat,
- 26:24Speaker 8: and he goes up the on deck circle. Wa he goes, hey, dude,
- 26:27Speaker 8: your bat's on fire. And so Lenny Lenny swung a
- 26:30Speaker 8: couple of times, and you know, the rubbi alcohol wore
- 26:35Speaker 8: off and the fire went out. But he got a
- 26:37Speaker 8: knock and he turned he turned it around a little
- 26:40Speaker 8: bit that day.
- 26:42Speaker 2: That's so good, Rod.
- 26:44Speaker 5: What's the reception like when you go back to City
- 26:46Speaker 5: Field all these years later, because I would have to
- 26:50Speaker 5: imagine it's it's a pretty nice sweet spot where the
- 26:53Speaker 5: die hard met fans know and appreciate you. But you're
- 26:56Speaker 5: also not getting swamped like like if Keith R. Nan
- 27:00Speaker 5: Days or Daryl Strawberry was walking around the conco I'm not.
- 27:03Speaker 8: So so oh oh yeah, absolutely, I can walk around
- 27:06Speaker 8: that concourse and and nobody will bother me.
- 27:10Speaker 6: Man. I can walk around.
- 27:12Speaker 8: I can walk up the shake shack and I going
- 27:15Speaker 8: over a couple of burgers and a chocolate shake, and
- 27:18Speaker 8: I can just sit there and uh and eat it.
- 27:21Speaker 6: And watch the ball game. I got no problems walking around.
- 27:26Speaker 8: I mean even when I played, you know, you walked
- 27:29Speaker 8: around I did you know obviously you know the bigger names,
- 27:33Speaker 8: you know, the Keith and Darryl and Doc and Gary
- 27:35Speaker 8: and you know, and especially Mookie. You know, those guys
- 27:40Speaker 8: were iconic, you know, and and we're the and rightfully
- 27:44Speaker 8: so we're the bigger names.
- 27:45Speaker 6: You know.
- 27:46Speaker 8: I was happy to be a part of it and
- 27:48Speaker 8: play a small role in the success.
- 27:52Speaker 2: I mean, Roger, it was a bigger role than that.
- 27:54Speaker 2: But anyway, when.
- 27:57Speaker 5: You when you go off to the shake shack and
- 27:59Speaker 5: you say, I'm Roger mc owl, he doesn't do that.
- 28:03Speaker 8: No, You wait in line, waiting line, right, you know,
- 28:07Speaker 8: and then then it's like you're going through the little
- 28:09Speaker 8: turnstile Disneyland. You got You're like ten deep, and then
- 28:13Speaker 8: you get up there in your order, and you know, no,
- 28:15Speaker 8: I know, I don't. I have never done that, and
- 28:20Speaker 8: so I don't do it now because I had never
- 28:24Speaker 8: done that, you know. I mean, I don't think I
- 28:26Speaker 8: put any more importance on myself than than anybody else.
- 28:29Speaker 6: And that's the thing is that.
- 28:30Speaker 8: You know so many people you know, you know do
- 28:33Speaker 8: I mean, you got you got Taylor here, I mean,
- 28:36Speaker 8: he's a he's a he's a guy that that he
- 28:39Speaker 8: helps you a lot.
- 28:40Speaker 6: Yes, he adds, it's.
- 28:43Speaker 8: No different than the ground screw guys. You know, the
- 28:45Speaker 8: people the ushers in it's in the stadium, you know,
- 28:48Speaker 8: or or or the conductor on the train.
- 28:51Speaker 6: You know, they they play a part of it.
- 28:54Speaker 1: And you know it's unlike you. Taylor has a poor mentor.
- 29:00Speaker 1: And if he threw five scoreless in a big game
- 29:02Speaker 1: six in the World Series eighty six, he'd be cutting
- 29:05Speaker 1: the entire fucking line. Shake shack again, he would, and
- 29:08Speaker 1: he'd be like, Hey, I'm Roger McDowell.
- 29:10Speaker 8: Yeah, and have short arms and the deep pockets, right.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Yeah, very short arms, very deep pockets. Yes, I thought it.
- 29:19Speaker 8: Well, you know, hey, I will tell you this that
- 29:23Speaker 8: one of the one of the one of the most
- 29:25Speaker 8: enjoyable places for me to go is when I go
- 29:27Speaker 8: back to New York and I go to the the
- 29:29Speaker 8: Smith Smith and Lensky grill.
- 29:32Speaker 6: Yeah, a little drill on the side I mean on
- 29:34Speaker 6: the side of it. Yes, yes, And got to.
- 29:36Speaker 8: Know the couple of the the bartenders there, and uh,
- 29:41Speaker 8: even over all these years and especially after after my
- 29:44Speaker 8: playing days as a coach, I would go in there
- 29:46Speaker 8: after games all the time, and yes, it was just,
- 29:51Speaker 8: uh that's my that's my go to place, and that's
- 29:54Speaker 8: the fun of it.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Yes, only the the kg vets know about the Smith
- 29:59Speaker 1: and Lelensky to the of the actual Smith and Willinsky.
- 30:02Speaker 2: It's the only place I go.
- 30:03Speaker 1: But speaking of after the game, does a place Finn
- 30:07Speaker 1: mccool's ring about to you? Because this was such a
- 30:09Speaker 1: long island team. Half your team lived in the town
- 30:12Speaker 1: that I grew up in. So I would drive down
- 30:14Speaker 1: the street, I'd see Bobby oheita to in his lawn
- 30:18Speaker 1: in the middle of the day, and I would go
- 30:19Speaker 1: to a bar called Finn mccool's. And most of the
- 30:22Speaker 1: Mets were there in Port Washington.
- 30:23Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, and we a lot of us stayed there.
- 30:25Speaker 8: And uh, probably the ring leader was behind that was
- 30:29Speaker 8: a gentleman by the name of Bert Brodsky bids yeah,
- 30:35Speaker 8: and he's a tremendous man and he he he helped
- 30:39Speaker 8: get guys out there, get him places.
- 30:43Speaker 6: One of the stories. I don't think it's in.
- 30:45Speaker 8: The book, but he helped, you know, he helped Doc
- 30:47Speaker 8: get his first apartment in uh in Port Washington and
- 30:52Speaker 8: uh so Bert, he says him, says, day Doc.
- 30:54Speaker 6: He says, you know, how's everything working out? Doctor is good? Good?
- 30:57Speaker 8: He goes, you're sleeping and good. He goes, yeah, you know,
- 31:00Speaker 8: it's okay. I'm I'm sleeping on a couch or a
- 31:02Speaker 8: floor or something like that, and.
- 31:03Speaker 6: Goes a what what do you what are you doing? Kid?
- 31:07Speaker 8: You know, we're gonna get you a bed. But the
- 31:09Speaker 8: beauty of that was that that's where uh, the Port
- 31:13Speaker 8: Washington railroad, right, we were able to.
- 31:16Speaker 6: Get you know.
- 31:18Speaker 8: And I'll tell you a story about that, and it's
- 31:20Speaker 8: in the book, but it's a story that you know what.
- 31:24Speaker 6: I would get on on.
- 31:24Speaker 8: The train and before five o'clock the train never stopped
- 31:29Speaker 8: at Shay. It was going past Shaye, went straight in
- 31:32Speaker 8: the city. So I would hop at Flush, hop off
- 31:35Speaker 8: at Flushing, take the you know, take the one stop
- 31:38Speaker 8: subway from Plush or yeah, Flushing stopped to Shave.
- 31:42Speaker 6: And so one of one of the days, one.
- 31:43Speaker 8: Of the conductors comes up and he goes, hey, aren't
- 31:46Speaker 8: you Roger mcdowey said, yeah, you know, and he goes,
- 31:51Speaker 8: we don't stop at Shave. Where do you get off?
- 31:53Speaker 8: I said that Flush, And he goes, we're stopping at Shay.
- 31:56Speaker 6: Here we go here we go. Right.
- 31:58Speaker 8: So, now this train, it's long Island railroad trains going
- 32:02Speaker 8: down the tracks headed into the city. All of a
- 32:05Speaker 8: sudden it stops at Shay and the conductor goes, hey,
- 32:09Speaker 8: a good game, you know, And I said, hey, thanks,
- 32:12Speaker 8: I get off and I look down up and down
- 32:14Speaker 8: the train both ways, and all these heads are popping
- 32:17Speaker 8: out and going, what the hell we stopping at Shay.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Yeah, because there's a badass on the train. That's fine. Yeah,
- 32:23Speaker 2: imagine what Jake Shack would do.
- 32:25Speaker 8: Yeah, And you know what, you know, after about a
- 32:27Speaker 8: week or two of bad games, they didn't stop at Shae.
- 32:30Speaker 6: Yes.
- 32:31Speaker 1: But the tailor, I'm telling you, I would walk down
- 32:33Speaker 1: the street, you'd see Dwight Gooden walking into a place
- 32:36Speaker 1: called Jack's Stationary, and you would just walk by and
- 32:38Speaker 1: be like hey, Doc, and he'd be like, hey, what's
- 32:40Speaker 1: going on?
- 32:41Speaker 2: They were really just a hometown team. It was so cool.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Go ahead tell it.
- 32:45Speaker 5: So when I was doing the research, Roger the thing
- 32:47Speaker 5: that maybe impressed me the most. From nineteen eighty five
- 32:51Speaker 5: to nineteen ninety six, you made seven hundred and twenty
- 32:56Speaker 5: three big League appearances, which were exceeded only by Lee Smith.
- 33:01Speaker 5: During those years. Now, when you're in the bullpen and
- 33:03Speaker 5: you hear that phone ring, did you just kind of
- 33:06Speaker 5: assume it was for you every time?
- 33:09Speaker 6: You know what it was? The situations.
- 33:12Speaker 8: I mean, Davey ran such a good bullpen that we
- 33:15Speaker 8: knew the situations that we would be coming in vern
- 33:19Speaker 8: Hoscheit our bullpen coaching, Greg Pablic or bullpen coaches. They
- 33:23Speaker 8: had the lineup down there, and we knew the teams
- 33:27Speaker 8: that we would pitch against. And the times of the
- 33:31Speaker 8: game dictated, you know, whether it's a close game where
- 33:35Speaker 8: it was early in the game, you know, if it
- 33:37Speaker 8: was if the bullpen phone rang in the fourth inning,
- 33:40Speaker 8: I knew it wasn't for me.
- 33:42Speaker 6: I can tell you that right.
- 33:44Speaker 8: After probably July of eighty five, I knew it wasn't
- 33:48Speaker 8: for me, And so we all knew who was going
- 33:52Speaker 8: to be getting that call. And the difference is is
- 33:55Speaker 8: that nowadays, I think there's thirteen or fourteen guys in
- 33:58Speaker 8: the bullpen, you know, you know in eighty five, eighty.
- 34:01Speaker 6: Six, eighty eight, we had five.
- 34:05Speaker 8: Yeah, so you know, you knew your role, and David
- 34:10Speaker 8: gave us, you know, the heads up on what your
- 34:13Speaker 8: roles were going to be, and you kind of figured
- 34:16Speaker 8: out your roles just by when you were pitching in games.
- 34:19Speaker 8: And so you know, when that bullpen phone rang, did
- 34:21Speaker 8: I know it was for me? If it was if
- 34:23Speaker 8: the situation, yeah, if you know, and they were, And
- 34:27Speaker 8: I think the beauty and then not to go too
- 34:29Speaker 8: much on tangent and get away from the question, but
- 34:31Speaker 8: I think the beauty of it was is that being
- 34:35Speaker 8: a tantum closing with Jesse.
- 34:39Speaker 6: It was we knew our teams.
- 34:42Speaker 8: There were there were more right handed dominant teams that
- 34:45Speaker 8: I pitched against, and uh, switch hitting and left handed
- 34:48Speaker 8: hitting teams usually Jesse got. Which is why like in
- 34:52Speaker 8: the eighties six playoffs against the Askers, the Askers.
- 34:55Speaker 6: Weren't my team. They were Jesse's ball club to fit
- 35:00Speaker 6: shout games with.
- 35:01Speaker 8: And so you know, even in that eighty six season,
- 35:04Speaker 8: I didn't pitch particularly well against the Astros during the season.
- 35:07Speaker 8: I actually I think it was zero and three and
- 35:09Speaker 8: had a thirteen year e or a against the Astros
- 35:12Speaker 8: during the season.
- 35:13Speaker 6: But you know, the bullpen phone was.
- 35:19Speaker 8: Something that, as you said, when it rang, but we
- 35:23Speaker 8: didn't know who was going in the game, just based
- 35:25Speaker 8: on situations and just following the game.
- 35:27Speaker 1: And to know how, I don't care how you were
- 35:29Speaker 1: against the Astros that season. In that game game six
- 35:32Speaker 1: e r zero points zero zero, that's all that matters, Roger.
- 35:36Speaker 6: Yeah, well you know what, And that's all that matters
- 35:39Speaker 6: for me.
- 35:39Speaker 8: Too, because those games in the regular season they meant something,
- 35:44Speaker 8: but at the end of the day that that game six.
- 35:47Speaker 6: Meant a lot more.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Yes, no question about it. We'll get you out of here.
- 35:51Speaker 2: We do appreciate the time.
- 35:53Speaker 1: I am wondering, is there a prank that you were
- 35:55Speaker 1: most excited for that just fell flat?
- 35:57Speaker 2: Like it just it didn't work out?
- 36:01Speaker 6: No, you got everyone, got him all, got them all.
- 36:05Speaker 8: Yeah, No, I don't remember one, you know, I mean
- 36:10Speaker 8: they were put it this way. There were enough characters
- 36:12Speaker 8: on the teams I played for. Yeah, you know, they
- 36:15Speaker 8: pretty they went off pretty much as planned.
- 36:18Speaker 2: Yes, Roger, we appreciate this.
- 36:20Speaker 1: By the way, we both noticed Taylor and I right
- 36:22Speaker 1: when you came on, you're wearing a Northwestern hat. I
- 36:25Speaker 1: am currently at Northwestern. My daughter plays lacrosse here. So
- 36:28Speaker 1: a couple of Wildcats cutting it up. Not that you
- 36:30Speaker 1: went here, but we'll explain your relationship with Northwestern.
- 36:34Speaker 8: Well, my son in law, my daughter's husband. His little brothers, Nick,
- 36:39Speaker 8: Martinelly and Martinelli. Has been the leading Big Ten score
- 36:43Speaker 8: in the last two years, first team All Academic this year.
- 36:48Speaker 8: He's been the second team Big Ten the last two years.
- 36:51Speaker 8: And he's he's a kid that, you know, I don't
- 36:54Speaker 8: want to say much like me, but he's a kid
- 36:56Speaker 8: that came from you know, his freshman year, he's played
- 37:00Speaker 8: in a middle or two and uh he works and
- 37:03Speaker 8: works a little his butt off, and he's just a
- 37:06Speaker 8: baseball or basketball rat and uh and continues to get
- 37:11Speaker 8: better each each each year.
- 37:13Speaker 6: And uh, it.
- 37:13Speaker 8: Was it was fun watching him grow as not only
- 37:16Speaker 8: as a young man, but as a basketball player and
- 37:19Speaker 8: get that opportunity and hell, leading the Big Ten and
- 37:22Speaker 8: scoring tears and rows, it's, uh, it's pretty good. And
- 37:25Speaker 8: uh I like what I like watching the post game
- 37:27Speaker 8: and uh comments of Chris Collins and uh.
- 37:31Speaker 6: You know it's it's it's.
- 37:32Speaker 8: Really neat to hear all the accolades that's coming and
- 37:37Speaker 8: rightfully coming to this young man.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a great kid. I've got to know him
- 37:40Speaker 1: just a little bit. My daughter knows him. He's turned
- 37:42Speaker 1: himself into a first round pick. Uh, in the NBA.
- 37:45Speaker 1: It's funny though, I will tell you at this school,
- 37:47Speaker 1: and you know this, Roger, whenever one of the basketball
- 37:50Speaker 1: players tries to show off, or a football player the
- 37:52Speaker 1: women's lacrosse team, and they're like, hey, check the trophy case.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that shots come up pretty quickly.
- 38:00Speaker 8: Yes, it's ideal saying you know, I look at the
- 38:03Speaker 8: back of the baseball card.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Exactly Yeah, that's exactly right. A nineteen eighty six World
- 38:10Speaker 1: Series champion Roger McDowell. This was so enjoyable for me.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Check out his new book Hotfoot My High Jakes in
- 38:16Speaker 1: Upside Down Life with the World Champion in New York Mets.
- 38:19Speaker 1: It came out last week. It's available wherever you get
- 38:21Speaker 1: your books. Roger, thanks so much. If you want to
- 38:23Speaker 1: promote it one more time on the way out, feel
- 38:25Speaker 1: free to do so.
- 38:26Speaker 2: But thank you so much.
- 38:27Speaker 6: You've done a good You've done a good job. I
- 38:29Speaker 6: really appreciate your guys time. And Taylor. I'm glad you know.
- 38:32Speaker 8: I'm glad you got to know a little bit about
- 38:35Speaker 8: the eighty six Mets and h and some of my career.
- 38:39Speaker 5: Not only do I know about the Mets now I
- 38:41Speaker 5: just bought the book.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Yeah, boy, Roger, impossible. I'd like to do this again sometimes,
- 38:51Speaker 1: so I'd loved it.
- 38:53Speaker 6: I'd love it. I love talking to you.
- 38:55Speaker 1: All right, fantastic. We'll gome luck with the book. I'll
- 38:56Speaker 1: get your number here when we hang up. But thank
- 38:59Speaker 1: you so much for doing this right.
- 39:00Speaker 6: Thanks Audios
