- 0:00Speaker 1: Basically, this character is the physical manifestation of the extreme
- 0:04Speaker 1: mutation of depression, which is amounthaful. Hello and welcome to
- 0:18Speaker 1: May the review be with you With Nick and Joe.
- 0:22Speaker 1: I'm Nick today, I am solo hosting. Joe is out
- 0:26Speaker 1: of town on vacation, traveling perhaps or maybe he has
- 0:31Speaker 1: found himself in a void. And if that is any indication,
- 0:35Speaker 1: you already know what we're talking about here today. It
- 0:38Speaker 1: is the MCU's Thunderbolts, which was just released a few
- 0:43Speaker 1: days ago. Quite a movie, my goodness. I will have
- 0:48Speaker 1: to start off by just saying, please go to the
- 0:50Speaker 1: theater and watch this film. It was fantastic. There's a
- 0:54Speaker 1: lot of chatter online that it might be a new
- 0:56Speaker 1: addition to the top ten all time from a Marvel perspective.
- 1:00Speaker 1: That's a pretty big statement. Although I have a hard
- 1:04Speaker 1: time not putting it in my top ten at the moment.
- 1:06Speaker 1: It's that good this movie, guys, it felt like Avengers esque.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I honestly haven't had a feeling like this since the
- 1:15Speaker 1: first Avengers film. The cast and just kind of how
- 1:18Speaker 1: they like play off of each other and interact. The
- 1:21Speaker 1: on screen chemistry was excellent. Writing wise, really solid storyline throughout,
- 1:29Speaker 1: just to kind of give you an overview or quick
- 1:32Speaker 1: synopsis of the film. Basically, it's about an unconventional team
- 1:37Speaker 1: of antiheroes including Elena, Agent, Walker, task Master, although for
- 1:44Speaker 1: like five minutes, Ghost, Winter, Soldier, Red Guardian, they're all
- 1:48Speaker 1: thrust into a dangerous mission led by Valentina. They're tasked
- 1:52Speaker 1: with like cleaning up her loose ends and shady businesses,
- 1:55Speaker 1: including Bob, who is also a loose end, although unexpected. Basically,
- 2:00Speaker 1: the Thunderbolt's face a death trap and must confront their
- 2:04Speaker 1: pass while simultaneously dealing with VAL's manipulation and her plan
- 2:09Speaker 1: to unleash Bob aka Century on the anti heroes. Things
- 2:14Speaker 1: take a turn when Bob's depression kicks in and Century
- 2:18Speaker 1: becomes a villainous void. So that sounds like a lot
- 2:23Speaker 1: if you're not familiar with the plot. There you go,
- 2:27Speaker 1: crazy amount of things going on this film, few fun
- 2:30Speaker 1: like quick hits. We got an Avenger's Tower appearance, which
- 2:33Speaker 1: I wasn't expecting Century. It was crazy powerful At first
- 2:39Speaker 1: when this movie was like before it came out, I
- 2:41Speaker 1: was thinking, like, is this villain going to be like
- 2:43Speaker 1: too powerful for like the heroes that we're supposed to
- 2:46Speaker 1: be dealing with here, but the movie does a great
- 2:49Speaker 1: job kind of like getting us on board with the
- 2:51Speaker 1: outcome and what happens next and essentially dealing with like
- 2:55Speaker 1: a crazy powerful like superhero for a split second, but
- 2:59Speaker 1: who also really has like a split personality because of
- 3:02Speaker 1: depression and ends up becoming like a villainous void instead.
- 3:08Speaker 1: On the back half, there really really interesting character Bob,
- 3:11Speaker 1: who was played by Lewis Pullman, is just like a
- 3:14Speaker 1: fantastic performance all around. Basically, this character is the physical
- 3:17Speaker 1: manifestation of the extreme mutation of depression, which is a
- 3:23Speaker 1: mouthful but just truly like a crazy way for the
- 3:30Speaker 1: MCU to basically tackle depression. Movie kicks off with Ulena
- 3:37Speaker 1: basically being depressed and looking for fulfillment and not being fulfilled,
- 3:41Speaker 1: and then kind of like kicks off from there and
- 3:45Speaker 1: we go we find out that Valentina is potentially being
- 3:50Speaker 1: impeached and that Bucky is one of the congressmen trying
- 3:52Speaker 1: to do that, and of course the it doesn't completely
- 3:58Speaker 1: work out that way. Also, the way that they portrayed
- 4:01Speaker 1: the void in this film terrifying happy that it wasn't
- 4:06Speaker 1: an end all be all, so hopefully Joe joins us
- 4:08Speaker 1: back here at some point in the future. This film
- 4:11Speaker 1: also gives off like a vibe for this next phase
- 4:16Speaker 1: of Marvel. This might be the best film that they've
- 4:20Speaker 1: released since Endgame. It really felt cohesive and fun and
- 4:26Speaker 1: funny and well written, and also did a good job
- 4:31Speaker 1: leaving some questions open and setting up what's going to
- 4:35Speaker 1: happen next. Basically, there's an extremely long post credit scene.
- 4:40Speaker 1: We get a mid credit scene which is just a
- 4:42Speaker 1: kind of funny little scene with Red Guardian, but then
- 4:44Speaker 1: the post credit scene is like, I think two and
- 4:46Speaker 1: a half plus minutes long, the longest post credit scene
- 4:48Speaker 1: we've ever had. Basically picks up fourteen months after this
- 4:57Speaker 1: movie originally ends, and we're dealing with like an extra
- 5:00Speaker 1: dimensional ship entering orbit, and we find out that it's
- 5:03Speaker 1: a Fantastic Four ship. So that's insane. Of course, we're
- 5:08Speaker 1: all assuming it's the Fantastic Four that we're going to
- 5:12Speaker 1: get to know here in this movie that comes out
- 5:14Speaker 1: in a couple months. But as far as a post
- 5:17Speaker 1: credit scene, one of the cooler post credit scenes we've
- 5:20Speaker 1: probably ever gotten to set up like another thing that's
- 5:23Speaker 1: coming next for Marvel. Marvel's at its best when it's
- 5:26Speaker 1: using its post credit scenes and then also following through
- 5:28Speaker 1: on them. Of course, we on this podcast love post
- 5:30Speaker 1: credit scenes. You can check out our top twelve MCU
- 5:33Speaker 1: post credit scenes on YouTube or on our podcast network
- 5:36Speaker 1: and I'll link those in the show notes. But yeah,
- 5:39Speaker 1: that was like a crazy awesome way to end in
- 5:41Speaker 1: the film. There just a couple other things from the
- 5:44Speaker 1: movie in general that were really really cool. The moment
- 5:48Speaker 1: where they're all the anti heroes if you will enter
- 5:52Speaker 1: the Void together to go save Bob, just basically kind
- 5:58Speaker 1: of like a just a bunch of like shame rooms
- 6:02Speaker 1: or like escape rooms, if you will inside basically like
- 6:06Speaker 1: Bob's mind, and we get like all these flashbacks to
- 6:10Speaker 1: Bob's past and like get an idea for like why
- 6:13Speaker 1: he is the way that he is. And really this
- 6:15Speaker 1: like movie kind of pulls on your heart a little bit,
- 6:18Speaker 1: like the emotional rollercoaster of it and the really upfrontness
- 6:24Speaker 1: of the highs and lows of in and out being
- 6:28Speaker 1: in and out of like a depressive state. What a
- 6:30Speaker 1: really interesting way to tackle that. Honestly, I'm not sure
- 6:37Speaker 1: many franchises could do that, and Marvel found a way
- 6:41Speaker 1: to also make it work for them and make the
- 6:44Speaker 1: movie you know, funny and entertaining and just makes you
- 6:49Speaker 1: fall in love with like all these characters. And essentially
- 6:53Speaker 1: it's called Thunderbolts, but we know that that's like a
- 6:55Speaker 1: placeholder now and Valentine at the end makes it about
- 6:58Speaker 1: her and how this was always at playing all along,
- 7:01Speaker 1: and we get this this new name of the New
- 7:04Speaker 1: Avengers with a Z, which just the Red Guardian's little
- 7:08Speaker 1: flair add to it, so it was quite ridiculous, as
- 7:12Speaker 1: only the O the Red Guardian could be. Let's talk
- 7:14Speaker 1: about Bob aka Century aka our Villainous Void. We first
- 7:20Speaker 1: find Bob in the basically this you know, down in
- 7:25Speaker 1: the bunker that Valentina sends all these anti heroes to
- 7:29Speaker 1: and they're all kind of like fighting with each other,
- 7:33Speaker 1: and somehow they end up triggering this like you know,
- 7:38Speaker 1: for all intentsive purposes like Coffin that ends up opening up.
- 7:42Speaker 1: This is where Bob has been basically just stored, and
- 7:46Speaker 1: we come to find out that Bob was like presumed dead,
- 7:53Speaker 1: but obviously he survived the like testing that we find
- 7:58Speaker 1: out later they were doing on him and many of the
- 8:00Speaker 1: people trying to create like their own superhero super not
- 8:06Speaker 1: even a super soldier, but just like somebody with every
- 8:10Speaker 1: single power basically you can do anything. And the comedic
- 8:16Speaker 1: relief here is so great because you know, Bob doesn't
- 8:18Speaker 1: remember anything, and everyone else in that room is just
- 8:23Speaker 1: the tensions are so high, and they're just trying to
- 8:25Speaker 1: figure out where the hell this guy came from and
- 8:27Speaker 1: why he was like stored down here, and so, you know,
- 8:32Speaker 1: we that's when we first meet him, and as the
- 8:35Speaker 1: story progresses, we find out more details about, you know,
- 8:38Speaker 1: the testing that they did on him and and and
- 8:40Speaker 1: what he became. But really it's it's one of those
- 8:45Speaker 1: examples of like the serum that they gave him just
- 8:48Speaker 1: essentially manifesting how his personality was times a thousand, and
- 8:56Speaker 1: Bob mentions this like earlier in the film, how like,
- 8:59Speaker 1: you know, he gets is really high moments and then
- 9:01Speaker 1: these really lows are really low, And we actually get
- 9:04Speaker 1: to see that with his like split personality once he
- 9:08Speaker 1: becomes century and has this like golden god esque vibe,
- 9:14Speaker 1: and then we get this like very low version of him,
- 9:20Speaker 1: very dark, who is much more villainous. And this is
- 9:22Speaker 1: like the quote unquote void character that he essentially splits
- 9:27Speaker 1: into and when this happens, Bob is basically like in
- 9:32Speaker 1: his own mind and like trapped basically, and this is
- 9:36Speaker 1: when the anti heroes have to like go get him out.
- 9:40Speaker 1: One thing that bothered me that I didn't really think
- 9:42Speaker 1: they clarified was, you know, Valentino has like a kill
- 9:46Speaker 1: switch that apparently, you know, anyone that they were testing
- 9:50Speaker 1: had been put in place, and her assistant like triggers
- 9:57Speaker 1: this kill switch. When Bob is centry and deciding not
- 10:01Speaker 1: to listen to Valentina and Valentine, and he falls to
- 10:05Speaker 1: the ground and you know, to Valentina's thought, like dies
- 10:12Speaker 1: because the kill switch like works. But moments later we
- 10:16Speaker 1: see that like he kind of turns all black like
- 10:19Speaker 1: into a shadow, and very soon after that, like he
- 10:24Speaker 1: rises up and is clearly not dead. And they didn't
- 10:27Speaker 1: explain at all, like why the kill switch didn't work,
- 10:33Speaker 1: So I felt like that was a little bit like
- 10:34Speaker 1: of an open thing. They could have maybe throw throw
- 10:37Speaker 1: us a bone and just kind of given us some
- 10:39Speaker 1: kind of detail on what the reason for that not
- 10:41Speaker 1: working is. Granted very possible, Valentine, obviously, there's no way
- 10:47Speaker 1: for them to know why it didn't work in that
- 10:48Speaker 1: moment because everything transpired so quickly, and the movie really
- 10:53Speaker 1: from there ends like timeline wise, probably an hour or
- 10:58Speaker 1: two later after the back after they go into the void.
- 11:01Speaker 1: So maybe that's something that we'll find out later on
- 11:04Speaker 1: why the kill switch didn't work. That would be a
- 11:07Speaker 1: cool little thing to get some more details on. But
- 11:09Speaker 1: that was like the biggest thing I think honestly that
- 11:12Speaker 1: I thought of, like in the theater watching it. But
- 11:15Speaker 1: Bob excellent character. Lewis Pulman plays them beautifully, like having
- 11:20Speaker 1: these like split personalities really just honestly an interesting villain
- 11:24Speaker 1: for me. I almost wish they could have maybe expanded
- 11:26Speaker 1: on the void situation, like because when he becomes his villain,
- 11:30Speaker 1: this void, like all he really does is just engulf
- 11:32Speaker 1: the city in the void, and I'm assuming like everyone
- 11:35Speaker 1: goes into their own like worst moment memories, you know,
- 11:39Speaker 1: in there, unless they all go into Bob's world, which
- 11:42Speaker 1: would be crazy, but we don't really know that. We
- 11:46Speaker 1: just know that when the heroes the anti heroes go
- 11:48Speaker 1: into the void, they are essentially in Bob's in Bob's mind,
- 11:53Speaker 1: leaves it opened to interpretation on where the rest of
- 11:56Speaker 1: the people of the city kind of went to Yolena
- 11:59Speaker 1: was also like one of the probably the lead character
- 12:03Speaker 1: in the whole film. She really like drove it home.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Florence Pew did a fantastic job really making you believe
- 12:08Speaker 1: in the lack of fulfillment and searching for something bigger
- 12:12Speaker 1: than herself and really she just wanted to be part
- 12:15Speaker 1: of a team. I think that's something we can all
- 12:18Speaker 1: relate to. So that was a really cool journey to
- 12:24Speaker 1: kind of see Elena go on and the beginning of
- 12:27Speaker 1: the film, she's kind of like implies she wants to
- 12:29Speaker 1: be in the spotlight, and by the end she's in
- 12:31Speaker 1: the spotlight, and it's kind of like Valentina giving her
- 12:34Speaker 1: careful what you wish for a situation, But of course
- 12:38Speaker 1: Elena giving Valentina the whole statement on saying, you know, basically,
- 12:41Speaker 1: the Thunderbolts own Valentina now because they know the real
- 12:44Speaker 1: truth and for whatever reason, they decided not to out
- 12:50Speaker 1: her in that moment. So that'll be interesting moving forward
- 12:53Speaker 1: as well. Red Guardian always a highlight for me. Guy's crazy,
- 12:58Speaker 1: He's absolutely insane. Biggest comedic relief for sure, Agent Walker
- 13:03Speaker 1: poor Man's Captain America did not hate him as much
- 13:05Speaker 1: as I have in the past MCU in the past
- 13:10Speaker 1: MCU shows, So kudos to the writers here for making
- 13:15Speaker 1: me hate him less and now he's a part of
- 13:17Speaker 1: the team. So I think part of that was that
- 13:20Speaker 1: they kind of humanized him a little bit, like with
- 13:22Speaker 1: the storyline finding out that you know, his wife and
- 13:25Speaker 1: daughter like left him basically, and so maybe try to
- 13:29Speaker 1: make it more likable on that front. We got Ghost
- 13:31Speaker 1: back finally, which is fricking badass. Like, have not seen
- 13:35Speaker 1: Ghost in many films, so that's really cool that that
- 13:40Speaker 1: she's back in the fold here in the MCU exciting.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Bucky is probably one of my top five characters of
- 13:48Speaker 1: all time. So getting like a film with like tons
- 13:52Speaker 1: of Bucky appearances and getting to see the Winter Soldier
- 13:54Speaker 1: in action fantastic. I still have so many questions about
- 13:57Speaker 1: him putting his arm in a dishwasher. I would love
- 14:01Speaker 1: for Rocket to witness that. That would be one of
- 14:04Speaker 1: the funniest things that Rock could probably would ever see
- 14:09Speaker 1: Bucky cleaning his arm in a dishwasher. So maybe the
- 14:13Speaker 1: MCU will give us that moment one day down the line.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Quite ridiculous, But yeah, Bucky of course plays a congressman,
- 14:22Speaker 1: although it turns out I guess he's not a congressman
- 14:24Speaker 1: for very long halfway through the film is you know,
- 14:27Speaker 1: back to being a superhero here, and it's just what
- 14:31Speaker 1: he does best. So it's also funny that, you know,
- 14:34Speaker 1: at the end of the film we find out that
- 14:35Speaker 1: they're basically the New Avengers, but that also when the
- 14:40Speaker 1: extra Dimensional Ship or Fantastic four ship enters, it sounds
- 14:45Speaker 1: like Sam Wilson's trying to gather a new group of Avengers,
- 14:49Speaker 1: and so we're not sure who the real Avengers are
- 14:52Speaker 1: at the moment. I'm assuming it's gonna be the New Avengers,
- 14:57Speaker 1: and then also whoever Sam puts together will probably end
- 14:59Speaker 1: up being one big team. But right now there's a
- 15:03Speaker 1: little bit of it seemed like animosity between Pucky and
- 15:07Speaker 1: Sam was like not being honest with each other about
- 15:10Speaker 1: who the real Avengers are. So that might be maybe
- 15:13Speaker 1: we'll get a New Avengers versus Real Avengers movie or
- 15:16Speaker 1: a little spin off Christmas special that'd be great, but
- 15:21Speaker 1: New Avengers, tons of new questions, fantastic for our coming
- 15:28Speaker 1: insane film might be a top ten film all time,
- 15:31Speaker 1: which is a big statement. But you're gonna have to
- 15:33Speaker 1: decide for yourself. Please go see it in theaters. It's awesome.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Let me know what you think in the comments and
- 15:39Speaker 1: find us on threads we're talking about Thunderbolts. We'll be
- 15:42Speaker 1: talking about and or let me know in the comments
- 15:44Speaker 1: what you think about Thunderbolts. If you've seen it, subscribe
- 15:47Speaker 1: if you can. Looking ahead May twelfth, we've got our
- 15:50Speaker 1: oz Fest or releasing, so keep a look out for that.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Joe should be back for oz Fest from the Void.
- 15:55Speaker 1: I think we're gonna go get him. Yeah. Until next time,
- 15:57Speaker 1: May the of you be with you. Physio
