- 0:22SPEAKER_02: Quite a good chat ahead of us, Maxwell.
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'll be honest, this has spent some time in the editing square this one.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: Has it really?
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: Oh, because of the yeah, multiple um like very fun.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: This this is bugs.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: We're talking of bugs.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: And uh multiple times through this uh conversation, various things happened.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: There was sensitive personal information shared on air um that we had to cut.
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: Password passwords to things.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: Particular band accounts.
- 0:47SPEAKER_03: So I've spent some time doing a bit of bit of cutting, bit of snippin'.
- 0:50SPEAKER_03: It was so funny listening to Connor talk through the phone trying to give uh their their merge person, I guess, um a password to their Square account.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: Telling the correct password it not working for them to have to do it in mid-interview.
- 1:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:10SPEAKER_03: Only for the password to be the one he communicated.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: That you may that I don't think that's made the cut, but so it might be in a blooper at some point down the line.
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: But um we are chatting to bugs, we're chatting to uh Connor and Jordan and Brock all about the new album Head Noise.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: This was just before they went on stage uh on the Thursday night with their last two shows.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: I'll tell you what, uh one one of my favorite chats from this year.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: Um there's there's plenty of of obviously heavy conversation had in here.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: Um, but at the same time, they're so joyous and happy, and just three mates making music, and it's so hard to not feel that infectious energy in the room.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: 100%.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: One of my favorite quotes from the interview, and it's stayed with me since I don't remember many things we talk about in interviews, but the funniest one was Connor talking to Jordan and saying, Do you think the cancer affected your music taste?
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I reckon uh let's not let's not faff about anymore because there's plenty of faffing about in the interview.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: There is.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: Uh I think it's over to you who opens up the uh the batting with uh bugs.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: No run.
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: Maxwell, we've already chatted adults, toothbrushes, footy, and now tooomba, and it's lack of sights to say.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: But off the back of that, absolutely ripping you've said in here.
- 2:28SPEAKER_03: New album, Head Noise.
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: We're joined by the Legends in Bugs.
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: Welcome to the show, lads.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: Howdy, howdy.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: Thanks for having us.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: Thanks for having us.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: Thanks for having us.
- 2:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, nice.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, nice.
- 2:40SPEAKER_03: It's a pleasure to have you guys on.
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: We start the show the same way with everyone.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: That's just to get an idea of what's spinning in your playlist.
- 2:47SPEAKER_04: Cono, what's spinning in your playlist?
- 2:50SPEAKER_06: Um the new Slowpulp, Hannah Brewer, an artist from I think New South Wales.
- 2:55SPEAKER_06: She's really sick.
- 2:57SPEAKER_06: Um, Mr.
- 2:58SPEAKER_06: Farts, if you've heard Mr.
- 3:00SPEAKER_06: Farts.
- 3:01SPEAKER_06: He's like there's jazz farts, reggae farts.
- 3:04SPEAKER_06: Um, he does all sorts of songs with farts in them.
- 3:06SPEAKER_06: It's really good.
- 3:07SPEAKER_06: Cool.
- 3:08SPEAKER_06: Rosie's literally pulled out the phone to check.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: I can remember the name.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Uh The Scratch.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: You heard of them?
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: I think they're like Irish or Scottish or something, like weird punk band.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: You showed me an ME.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I sent it to Jordan because I I never send Jordan anything.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: It's like, listen to this one though.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: That's really cool.
- 3:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, sick, like really dry drum sound.
- 3:28SPEAKER_04: You don't hear it often.
- 3:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 3:30SPEAKER_06: Swap meet as well.
- 3:31SPEAKER_06: I always forget if it's swamp meat or swap meet.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: That's what they're doing there, like uh bluesy uh what I was supposed to say?
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: Bayou swamp rock.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: Bayou.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: That's what I was looking for.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: They're they're good.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: New movements and Sea Haven as well.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Always good.
- 3:45SPEAKER_03: Always good.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: I feel like this year's ramping up for new releases.
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: There's been a lot of good albums that have dropped this year in particular.
- 3:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, there's one really good one that just came out by some band called Bugs.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: Well, perfect segue.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: Congratulations, guys.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: The album is actually fucking fantastic.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: And like it's we don't want to call it early.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: We don't want to call it early, but we think it's one of the best in the band.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: But how are you guys feeling now at the albums?
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: Out in the world, people have had a listen.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: It's been out for about a week now, so yeah, what how's the reception been so far?
- 4:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, reception's huge.
- 4:17SPEAKER_04: It's one of the uh one of our only albums where people in my family, my friends, all my circles have gone and told me that they like separate songs on the album.
- 4:28SPEAKER_04: Usually it's like the single or like the two singles, but this time it's like there's a big even spread on like who likes what, so pretty happy about that.
- 4:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 4:38SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it's cool.
- 4:39SPEAKER_06: Radio's been really good smashing it and stuff, which is always helpful to get it in more ears and similar thing, like almost every one that I talk to has like a different favorite song, which is kind of cool because it's no like obvious, you know, filler on the album.
- 4:55SPEAKER_06: I think that all the songs kind of stand on their own two legs or whatever the saying is.
- 5:01SPEAKER_06: Two feet.
- 5:02SPEAKER_06: Two feet.
- 5:03SPEAKER_06: There you go.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Look you can stand on your hands.
- 5:07SPEAKER_06: What do you think, Brock?
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Uh um Jouble.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Um, I've never had a microphone like this before.
- 5:19SPEAKER_06: Traditional.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Hello.
- 5:23SPEAKER_06: Do you have any thoughts on the album?
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Uh thoughts.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Um what are those?
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Not my thoughts right now.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Sorry, we're a few videos already.
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: How do you feel the reception's been?
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Reception.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: I think similar to what uh what Jordan said, like um what he said.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: What he said.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, everyone has like different favorites and stuff, which is really cool.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: And I've had like some friends that I like, you know how you have like that auntie uncle that like they obviously don't like your band.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: It's all good.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: But like you get a few people like that that actually like, I actually kind of like that song.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: You put it out.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: I feel like that means more.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: Because then the time to be like, oh, that's a nice hobby to have, isn't it?
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: That's a cool band going.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: Are you making any money yet?
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: Well, for international listeners that may not know that may not know the story behind the record.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: Obviously, Jordan, you've been going through a lot of uh really tough health uh you know, tough health journey.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: You've been facing a very aggressive form of cancer all the way through the album being written, recorded, and produced.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: Obviously, it's an incredibly heavy backdrop to produce art amongst as a band.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: Obviously, there are obviously times during that process when music would not have been a priority for you.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: But where what was how did you feel the balance uh was for you both in that recording process, but then in the process, like the you know, changing the process of how the music was recorded and written in that for the album?
- 6:48SPEAKER_04: I think it uh weirdly, like you said, you know, sometimes it wasn't a priority.
- 6:53SPEAKER_04: I I'd be in hospital.
- 6:54SPEAKER_04: Uh you know, we might have planned to record over the weekend, and then I've gone had a really shocking uh uh chemo round and felt terrible.
- 7:03SPEAKER_04: Um that happened a few times throughout the the two, three years we were recording.
- 7:08SPEAKER_04: I mean, I was only on chemo for the last year or so, but yeah, no, it definitely pushed the album as something that's more important to me.
- 7:17SPEAKER_04: So the art was always gonna be super fun to make.
- 7:20SPEAKER_04: So that's why we started doing it three years ago.
- 7:23SPEAKER_04: And then as it got closer to this point that we are now, and I got sicker and sicker, it became more and more important to to finish, to record, to prioritize the music.
- 7:32SPEAKER_04: Um so yeah, I mean it just happened naturally.
- 7:35SPEAKER_04: It wasn't really a discussion that we had, it just kind of made its way to that point.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, as bandmates, Brock and Connor, we're sure that it felt like a bit of a a balancing act for you guys trying to be there for Jords while also you know, working on the album and trying to make it you know a a bugs album.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: How did you kind of navigate those conversations you know between friendship and and band?
- 8:00SPEAKER_03: Because I can imagine that would be quite a difficult thing to navigate.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: We kind of just pretended nothing was going on.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Like really?
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: And I wouldn't say pretend, but it was just like alright, well that that fucking sucks.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Like what do you want to do?
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: It's like record some music?
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: Like, alright, let's go, let's do it, let's do it.
- 8:22SPEAKER_06: Like I think it helps to double down on we've said like in some other uh interviews sort of talking about the same thing, like try and just be like not the a warrior or something, like try and keep it as normal as possible because like I think if I it's so hard to imagine yourself in someone else's shoes without kind of how hypoctic it is, but if I was in Jordan's position, I'd just kind of want to be treated like as normally as possible because all this other shit in your life is like changing quite dramatically and the way that people treat you might like change basically.
- 9:03SPEAKER_06: So we just tried to stick at what we're good at as friends and just kind of be there for him and try to yeah, get spend as much time on the music as possible and spend as much time trying to like lighten the mood really, which is what we do anyway.
- 9:19SPEAKER_06: So it wasn't like a it wasn't trying to be ignorant of how serious what he's going through is, but you know, I think Jordan knows that we're always there for him and what he felt like he needed from us or like wanted at that point in time is just kind of fucking knuckling down and getting this this stuff finished so we could yeah, put it out and it's just an excuse to keep hanging out as much as possible as well, really.
- 9:43SPEAKER_06: Like a good excuse.
- 9:44SPEAKER_06: It's good, yeah, it's like what we've always done.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: I mean, before we dive into I guess the the micro details of the album itself, um I would I was interested to kind of ask, was there a version of the record before everything sort of kicked off?
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: And then did it kind of take a pivot maybe lyrically or um sonically through the process?
- 10:08SPEAKER_03: Was there a version before and kind of after?
- 10:12SPEAKER_06: I'd love to say yes, because it would be like a really romantic answer.
- 10:17SPEAKER_06: But in reality, we had the majority of the songs recorded like pre-diagnosis and stuff.
- 10:23SPEAKER_04: It's Connor writes songs about relationships that he's had.
- 10:30SPEAKER_06: Actually, there's a song about birds, and there's a song about Andrew Tate, yeah, relationships with politics and and um life.
- 10:42SPEAKER_06: So I don't know, yeah.
- 10:44SPEAKER_06: It's funny, like in retrospect, you can listen to songs and take your own meaning from them.
- 10:50SPEAKER_06: Like when you release them, other people are open to interpret them how they want.
- 10:54SPEAKER_06: But having been through everything we have in the last like year, hearing some of the songs now, it kind of um yeah, you can interpret them through a lens where it's kind of does relate to what we've been through.
- 11:06SPEAKER_06: But at the same time, like half the time I don't even fucking know what my songs are about when I'm writing them, if I'm being totally honest, like yeah, I'm just putting some words on a piece of paper and away we go.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: Did any songs change for you?
- 11:25SPEAKER_04: I wouldn't say that they changed for me because of cancer, because of my diagnosis.
- 11:31SPEAKER_04: I would say they changed a little bit because we grew older.
- 11:35SPEAKER_04: Like, you know, three years is a long time.
- 11:37SPEAKER_04: We grew older, our listening taste changed, we aimed for a more slow pulpy vibe.
- 11:42SPEAKER_04: The the further we sort of uh got into the album, and that's just the you know, the fact that we recorded for three years, that's gonna happen, right?
- 11:51SPEAKER_04: To to anyone in three years, everything changes.
- 11:53SPEAKER_04: So no, not so much the cancer, but definitely aging may it had an influence.
- 11:59SPEAKER_06: Music taste, yeah, yeah, straight up.
- 12:01SPEAKER_06: Did the cancer affect your music taste?
- 12:04SPEAKER_06: It hasn't reached the brain yet.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, obviously, as you mentioned, like it it does sonically have a different take to sort of some of the previous bugs records.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: It feels like you're playing with all the textures that haven't been on the previous releases.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: There's there's a lot more like mandolin and acoustic bass, and then a lot more percussion.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: Was it a bit anything goes nothing's off the table when it came to the recording for the sessions?
- 12:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 12:27SPEAKER_04: I mean, we got what's that?
- 12:29SPEAKER_04: We got band banjitar that's huge on the record.
- 12:32SPEAKER_04: Uh, the six-string banjo.
- 12:35SPEAKER_04: Um, lots of keys, MIDI stuff that we messed around with with, which we haven't done before.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: We kind of resigned to the fact.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Well, when we started out, we also uh told ourselves that we would put Jordan on guitar and we would just put the bass on track.
- 12:53SPEAKER_06: Because Jordan's way better at guitar than me.
- 12:58SPEAKER_06: It comes out as well.
- 12:59SPEAKER_06: Which was kind of yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: Jordan Jordan played on like uh three or four of the songs.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: I am bugs, but and guitar, and yeah.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: But we kind of gave ourselves a green light to just do whatever, and we're like, we'll just chuck whatever's missing on the track, and then you know that means we can just have more fun and just do literally everything.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Like Connor's not gonna pull out a banjo for one song to play live, like it's highly impractical.
- 13:24SPEAKER_06: And we can't afford to pay a session person to come and do it live.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but we absolutely uh did a lot of experimenting, like most of it is acoustic guitar, even what you might assume is like an electric guitar is acoustic.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, it's like Brozy MIDI bass and stuff.
- 13:41SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Brozy played a massive part, you know, being the producer and recording person as well, along with our friend Matt, but mainly Brozy, yeah, you know, working the DAW engineering engineering.
- 13:53SPEAKER_04: He'd literally go, Oh, I reckon that would sound cool if we like sped that up or played the drums like twice the speed and then slowed it down to a certain pace and had its own like style, you know.
- 14:03SPEAKER_04: You you along with playing drums, you producing had it's like the fourth instrument, you know what I mean.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: We kind of tried to do everything a bit unconventionally, just to make it sound a bit weird.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: It kind of like tickles your brain.
- 14:14SPEAKER_06: Also gonna double down on um Jordan's shout-out to Matt, our um friend who helped produce like the whole record.
- 14:21SPEAKER_06: He plays in a local band, Talk Heavy, and used to play in Muddy Chanter, was it?
- 14:26SPEAKER_06: And another one.
- 14:28SPEAKER_06: Walken?
- 14:29SPEAKER_06: Walken, yeah, Walken was the one.
- 14:31SPEAKER_06: But yeah, he's an absolute genius and gave so much of his wisdom to stuff like textually and structurally to the songs, and really helped us kind of like I guess push ourselves.
- 14:43SPEAKER_06: And he he's was kind of into the same stuff and had the vision like pretty sorted from early days in terms of what we wanted, and was just like a really great tool to be able to like get where we wanted to, and also just a great like um energy boost around the place as well.
- 15:00SPEAKER_06: He's just an awesome dude and great to spend time with, so it's like he's been the fourth member for this whole kind of release cycle.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: He's great.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Really good like communicator as well.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's like I'll just like spit something out and it just makes no sense to these guys.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: And and Maddie's just like picks up a guitar, he's like, Do you mean this?
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: I'm like, Yes, that exactly what I meant.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: I don't know how you like heard that and then just like yeah, it just glues the room together, right?
- 15:28SPEAKER_04: It's like a musical translator, yeah, literally with like encyclopedic knowledge of all music as well.
- 15:35SPEAKER_04: It's crazy.
- 15:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:36SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean, just on that, we've we sort of felt like it's for you guys, I guess in blink 182 terms, it's the leap from take off your pants and jacket to self-titled with the new palette of sounds and textures.
- 15:51SPEAKER_03: I mean, you mentioned all these different things you were trying in the studio.
- 15:54SPEAKER_03: Did anything leap out that was particularly weird or different that you guys hadn't done before?
- 15:59SPEAKER_03: Like weird mic setups or random.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: I mean, we spoke on instruments before, but like anything super specific?
- 16:06SPEAKER_04: I I remember early early days, you know, we wouldn't even use a real kick drum.
- 16:10SPEAKER_04: I had this electronic drum kit, so I brought over the just the kick drum just to trigger so you could get no bleed from the kick in the recordings while you did that.
- 16:19SPEAKER_04: That was cool.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so we'd like record into a bunch of distortion and um compression the drums, and like I'd end up like playing with soft or something and because you can hear what you're like doing.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: You play differently and stuff.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: So we did a lot of that.
- 16:38SPEAKER_06: One of the songs we ended up using like the demo vocals I'd recorded because the take was sick.
- 16:44SPEAKER_06: And it we just when I demoed it, it like didn't sound right at the speed and like the pitch, so I think I'd put it up like two steps, and then we ended up like re-recording all the bones back around it in the new pitch and just keeping like the OG vocals and stuff on it because they just sounded so much nicer.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, made it all like wobbly and cool as well.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we got some guest vocals from my sister as well on one of the tracks.
- 17:10SPEAKER_04: That was a huge thing we always wanted to do, so yeah, it was good.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: The main bones though of what sort of changed, I think, was um like we re we re-amped uh acoustic guitars for the main like rhythms and stuff.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: We've never done that before.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: And it kind of just gives it that like nostalgic kind of sound.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: It's just like lo-fi guitars or something.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: But we really lent into that sound.
- 17:38SPEAKER_06: Like fuzzy We just we're just trying to get like the cool thick powercordy like grunge tone.
- 17:45SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 17:46SPEAKER_06: Like everything we tried on electrics just wasn't quite.
- 17:49SPEAKER_06: It was either too far, like muddy, low rangey, or it was too like scratchy because you'd be pushing like the driver distortion too hard.
- 17:57SPEAKER_06: But then we just I don't even know how we figured it out.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: Just didn't want it to sound heavy, yeah.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: Like to make it a sound album.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: Like it's so easy, like alright, we can like get a high-gain app and like throw some humbuckers into it on the bridge, and it'll be like you know, growling cool, but it will just sound like a rock album.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like we sort of wanted to avoid that.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: So just do everything unconventionally, and you're gonna end up with an unconventional sound, right?
- 18:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:25SPEAKER_04: I mean, we flipped the script on some of the softer songs they have the softer songs have like the most fuzzy bass, and the harder songs have like chill bass, you know what I mean?
- 18:33SPEAKER_04: Like it's just we not deliberately, it just happened that way, you know.
- 18:37SPEAKER_06: And we got to put DJ scratches on a song.
- 18:42SPEAKER_06: Fuck it out.
- 18:43SPEAKER_06: DJ lethal fucking let's go.
- 18:46SPEAKER_06: Who sings when it's over?
- 18:48SPEAKER_06: When it's over, and then we could well anyway.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: Don't worry.
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: Len, maybe Len?
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, was there a second Len song?
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: Actually, there was, and it was a cover of Kids of America for the Digimon movie.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: Oh, don't start with the Digimon movie.
- 19:04SPEAKER_04: Is that also in Jimmy Neutron?
- 19:06SPEAKER_04: Do you remember that movie?
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, the Jimmy Neutron movie.
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: His mum?
- 19:13SPEAKER_05: Jimmy Neutron.
- 19:15SPEAKER_05: She's fake.
- 19:17SPEAKER_05: Judy's got it.
- 19:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Judy.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: I wasn't talking about Judy Neutron.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: Some of the tracks, like Erase and Heaven, obviously feel incredibly emotional, and they've got these things, these, these, you know, this sadness that's tucking at your heartstrings with a warmth that's kind of matched with it as well.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: On the other hand, one of the songs that got us the most was Stay With Me, which feels so standout for just how warm it is.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: Obviously, there's the gang vocals when everyone's kind of getting in at the end, there's the hand claps, and it feels very like you guys were just in a room around a mic getting into it.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: What was the story behind that track coming together specifically?
- 19:52SPEAKER_06: I think I just wanted to write songs that would really like they'd pass like the campfire test, and it'd be good if you just played them on an acoustic on its own and have that real kind of sing-along vibe.
- 20:05SPEAKER_06: And then I don't think that was one of the ones uh maybe it was like a really shit demo that I did on Logic or whatever.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:15SPEAKER_06: But just like wanted something with I was feeling personally really inspired by this Bones and Jones song.
- 20:22SPEAKER_06: It's called You're the Only One I Want.
- 20:24SPEAKER_06: It's like a bit more of a digitally glitch version, but I was just reckoning I listened to it like fifty times in a month or something and was just like, man, this is such a cool song.
- 20:32SPEAKER_06: I want to write something kind of like this, but have it m feel like, yeah, more analog, I guess, or like acoustic driven and sincere.
- 20:43SPEAKER_06: And yeah, like everyone loves a little bit of a vocal to sing along to.
- 20:49SPEAKER_06: So it's just like, yeah.
- 20:51SPEAKER_06: And it was like just a sincere song about like being in love and wanting to tell someone that you feel that way about them.
- 21:01SPEAKER_04: It does have some slightly horny undertones.
- 21:04SPEAKER_04: There is a bit going on there.
- 21:06SPEAKER_04: Honestly, something about being in the same bed and want to be inside you kind of vibes.
- 21:11SPEAKER_04: I don't know if I'm getting the lyrics wrong.
- 21:13SPEAKER_05: It never says that.
- 21:14SPEAKER_05: There's a couple, there's a couple.
- 21:16SPEAKER_06: It says I love you till the sheets are wet.
- 21:18SPEAKER_06: There you go.
- 21:19SPEAKER_06: That's the one.
- 21:19SPEAKER_06: That's horny as fuck.
- 21:20SPEAKER_06: That is fucking horny.
- 21:22SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it's true.
- 21:24SPEAKER_06: You ever had sex on an airbed?
- 21:26SPEAKER_06: It's not good.
- 21:29SPEAKER_06: Your camping is so bad.
- 21:31SPEAKER_06: So so bad.
- 21:33SPEAKER_06: Don't do it.
- 21:34SPEAKER_06: Then you throw sand and stuff in there.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: It's just one sand, you got you're some kink shit that I'm not necessarily gonna do.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: That's not even like I'm on a yucky yum.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: I like the texture.
- 21:46SPEAKER_03: I don't even want to think about the chat.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 21:48SPEAKER_03: Jeez.
- 21:49SPEAKER_03: Fucking yeah.
- 21:50SPEAKER_03: Anyway, let's talk about some songs that sit down anyway.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: That's a good waterbeds instead.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: No, there are a couple of songs in here in particular, Birds and Just Fine, that nail those classic bugs moments, I feel.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: Is there a secret source that you guys have when it comes to writing these stupidly fun like sing-alongs?
- 22:14SPEAKER_03: Do you listen back?
- 22:15SPEAKER_03: And if it's not, you know, instantly getting stuck in your head, is it back to the drawing board, or is it just everything that kind of naturally happens?
- 22:24SPEAKER_06: I was gonna say Pickle Mayo is the source.
- 22:26SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: What the hell is he all about?
- 22:29SPEAKER_06: No, I just write heaps of shit and then I show these guys, and basically they're like, Yeah, this is good, or oh, I don't know about this one.
- 22:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we'll we'll sit around the table at Brock's place, you know, the Durry deck and sit around the table for real.
- 22:42SPEAKER_06: And they make me sit like off the deck, down on the ground, like it's just like Pheasant and the Lords kind of situation.
- 22:52SPEAKER_06: Like, here's the song for the week my masters.
- 22:55SPEAKER_04: Denied, not this one.
- 22:57SPEAKER_04: No, we just chuck it on the UI boom, and I think we can all sort of tell by who's bopping their head, who's like vibing it, then or if we talk about it later, if we go, oh, that'd be sick with this kind of guitar on it.
- 23:08SPEAKER_04: Those ones get ticked off and and made into like new iterations, I guess.
- 23:13SPEAKER_06: Even if they're not vibing, sometimes I'll be open to being like, well, there's definitely something there that we can work with, so they're the ones that we usually try and like put a bit of a different spin on them and stuff.
- 23:25SPEAKER_06: Like I think Tough Love was one where it was really just straight bugs like rock song.
- 23:31SPEAKER_06: It was like 15, 20 BPM quicker, and just like no swing to the drums.
- 23:36SPEAKER_06: It was just like a blink song, like you mentioned earlier, basically.
- 23:42SPEAKER_06: But then yeah, we were just like it doesn't fit with the majority of the stuff that we're really wanting to be on the album.
- 23:48SPEAKER_06: So we re-recorded it with like this cool kind of like break beat thing and like lots more like janky like delayed guitars and just lent into that whole thing and it's turned out I think way better than the demo.
- 24:03SPEAKER_06: My girlfriend thinks the demo was the first version was better.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: The original.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: Which I in its own right is like is cool.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: It's been done better.
- 24:15SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 24:16SPEAKER_06: That's defeated the purpose if we were just gonna go back to the well and be like, let's just do the same bugs thing that's because it's been so long, like Jordan said before.
- 24:25SPEAKER_06: We've kind of grown as people since the the last batch of recording, so and we didn't have any time frame like restricting us really over the majority of the recording period, so we were just kind of like free to really explore what we wanted it to sound like in the end, as opposed to chasing like a kind of commercial excuse me, like commercial outcome or something.
- 24:49SPEAKER_06: It's like release, tour, tour again, record, release, all within like a two-year, eighteen month cycle even, and people's attention spans are like so short as consumers are gonna be pumping stuff out that we luckily could just step away from that whole kind of industry cycle and lucky as a Brock having so much like patience with lending his time in the recording studio because he owns the place we record at.
- 25:16SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we just had the luxury of being able to do it like on our own terms, which was a big kind of informing part of how the album turned out.
- 25:26SPEAKER_06: I don't know, that makes sense.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, makes sense to me, brother.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: I can't remember the question at this point.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: I do love our tangents.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: A waffle sometimes.
- 25:36SPEAKER_03: That's okay.
- 25:37SPEAKER_03: I think what I took from it was the darry deck and then Connor.
- 25:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the Dry Deck.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: I'm intrigued, I'm intrigued by the Dairy deck.
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: Well, you know.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: I don't smoke dairies.
- 25:45SPEAKER_04: Well, none of us smoke durries anymore, but back in the OG days, that's how we'd we'd also listen to bug songs.
- 25:51SPEAKER_04: We just all well, Brock Brock never smoked.
- 25:53SPEAKER_04: We Connor and I back at Winnie Blues, and yeah, Connor and I smoked enough so that I mean, Brock, secondhand smoking, you probably should have cancer, not me.
- 26:03SPEAKER_04: I mean, like we've hailed so many darries over the years.
- 26:07SPEAKER_06: I'd be like driving on tour, and then Jordan and I'd be up the front of the car.
- 26:11SPEAKER_06: I remember one night as well, just like ashing out the car window, and because Brock was had his windows out to try and get like a little bit of fucking airflow back in the like ash cherry just like flew straight back in the car window and like landed on him, and he's like classic.
- 26:30SPEAKER_04: That's why we always drove my band.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: Just all good memories, good times.
- 26:37SPEAKER_02: You may be in terms of compensation.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: Don't tell him that.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: The the dough deck, I feel like our band rehearsals were like 70% sitting on the deck just talking shit.
- 26:49SPEAKER_06: I think they still are, even though they don't smoke anymore.
- 26:52SPEAKER_06: Yeah, exactly.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: So most time just chilling, yeah, talking shit, and then Connor pulls out an acoustic, shows it, shows an idea.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: Someone's doing some work.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: Or he's or he's got the UE boom, you know.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: Someone's doing some work.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: What one of the other songs that tackles uh, you know, cooked units on the internet, obviously you mentioned it before, Andrew Tate.
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, I was gonna say, as much as we love seeing those kind of wankers all over our uh our feeds and our algorithms, clearly, you know, it's inspiring some tracks.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: Do you find yourselves kind of deep diving into this weird, kind of hate watching all this weird shit to just like get that kind of inspiration where you're like, I fucking hate all this, but I want to write a song about it.
- 27:31SPEAKER_06: The algorithm's too strong, it doesn't really feed me any of that shit, and I'm not gonna like the world's already incense it incenses enough rage in me just naturally, so I don't like need to go out of my way to feel like that.
- 27:43SPEAKER_06: We actually had to look up Andrew Tate quotes to like talk into the song at one point, and I was just like reading it being like, Alright, this guy's fucking insane.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, those are all real quotes in the um the bridge.
- 27:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we got some samples in the well, not samples, us saying his quotes in a funny voice, like imitating him.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: I was gonna say, do we do we need to give him like a production a running credit on the function?
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: Thankfully not.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: Well, he's going to jail, so yeah, yeah.
- 28:11SPEAKER_06: He can access the money anyway.
- 28:12SPEAKER_06: Proceeds of crime.
- 28:14SPEAKER_06: He'd probably sue us if he came out, if he ever found out about it.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, go for it, brother.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, he he said it, he backed it.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: He's like, this is me.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: I like all this stuff.
- 28:27SPEAKER_04: What's the one?
- 28:28SPEAKER_04: Women can't drive or something.
- 28:30SPEAKER_04: Like that was one of the big ones.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: I was like, if you're if you're a guy and you you have a cat, you're a pussy.
- 28:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:35SPEAKER_04: If you're poor, stop being poor.
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:37SPEAKER_06: Reading is for losers who refuse to learn from experience.
- 28:42SPEAKER_06: Fuck yeah.
- 28:43SPEAKER_06: I want to kind of r fuck with.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: What was it?
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: Drinking water is for am I making that up?
- 28:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I only drink sparkling water.
- 28:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:59SPEAKER_04: No, legit.
- 29:00SPEAKER_05: Like these are the ones we looked up.
- 29:01SPEAKER_06: How silly is that?
- 29:03SPEAKER_06: Sparkling water ones, not bad.
- 29:06SPEAKER_06: I think he's just he's getting more and more on board.
- 29:08SPEAKER_06: I think I might be missing.
- 29:10SPEAKER_06: Maybe I should seek out some of his stuff.
- 29:13SPEAKER_06: I listened to too much Joe Rogan, so he's just as bad.
- 29:22SPEAKER_03: Well, speaking of insanity, you guys are playing Crowbar tonight, but you're also playing it Saturday.
- 29:28SPEAKER_03: And Connor, we spoke before things kicked off today that it's clashing with the Lions semi-final with the Crows.
- 29:35SPEAKER_03: How are you feeling?
- 29:36SPEAKER_06: Do you want me to break this microphone?
- 29:39SPEAKER_06: You know that we didn't really go here.
- 29:42SPEAKER_06: No, I'm just gonna wear full lions kit on stage, which is bad because I've only got one of those old like woolen like jerseys, so I'm gonna get so sweaty.
- 29:51SPEAKER_06: My friends were saying sorry, got the cleats on the boots and everything.
- 29:54SPEAKER_06: Boy, that'd be dangerous.
- 29:55SPEAKER_06: Yeah, but it's bad enough.
- 29:56SPEAKER_06: Me playing in regular shoes with flippers on me.
- 29:59SPEAKER_04: It's fucking I didn't even see that.
- 30:02SPEAKER_03: So do we get up on Saturday night?
- 30:03SPEAKER_03: Is the question?
- 30:05SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 30:06SPEAKER_06: Lions by 140.
- 30:09SPEAKER_06: Oh determined to kick 25.
- 30:12SPEAKER_06: 25 goals.
- 30:13SPEAKER_06: Is that your official humor cluggage?
- 30:17SPEAKER_06: Uh 600 disposals and 100% efficiency and um Gabba to get set on fire.
- 30:30SPEAKER_04: I wish I could give you that two grand for the multi, bro.
- 30:34SPEAKER_04: I don't even know why.
- 30:36SPEAKER_06: I was still looking up tickets till like two days ago, full well knowing that we're playing at the exact same time.
- 30:43SPEAKER_06: I don't know why.
- 30:44SPEAKER_05: I was just like, maybe something will happen.
- 30:47SPEAKER_05: Maybe I'll show it again.
- 30:50SPEAKER_05: Maybe Crowbar can get a charge.
- 30:54SPEAKER_04: We'll whip out the hologram, holog holographic Connor.
- 30:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and get the set pre-recorded from tonight and play it on Saturday.
- 31:02SPEAKER_04: So you don't actually have to be there, you can be at the game.
- 31:04SPEAKER_06: Brock made a good point as well.
- 31:06SPEAKER_06: We could maybe um get the lions to move their game.
- 31:10SPEAKER_06: I reckon of all the icons, probably the most likely.
- 31:12SPEAKER_06: It's like devastating for Brisbane.
- 31:14SPEAKER_06: Brisbane loses so either way, really.
- 31:16SPEAKER_06: Like the city, because like two icons going head to head.
- 31:19SPEAKER_06: We already had to move our shows because we didn't want like Soho to have no crowd.
- 31:24SPEAKER_06: We're gonna play the same night as them, but we thought, you know, these these guys probably deserve to get a couple.
- 31:28SPEAKER_06: Those up and comers, they need them.
- 31:30SPEAKER_06: Those young up and cuppers, yeah.
- 31:32SPEAKER_03: Well, comeback shows can be tricky, yeah.
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: So I think you guys did the right thing.
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: Um, and from what we've seen as well, they've struggled for tickets, so yeah, generous idea.
- 31:41SPEAKER_06: Their whole career, the real bad you know, I gotta throw, throw, throw a bone, throw some scraps.
- 31:48SPEAKER_06: I love you guys.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: If you never see this, which you probably won't, but it's fucking just yeah, I love you.
- 31:56SPEAKER_02: You know what?
- 31:56SPEAKER_02: Fuck Mansfield, fuck the 412 too.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: You said it.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: It's on record.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: I love you, I was just joking.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: Before we go, uh, we've got uh one final question that we're gonna ask you in two parts.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: So, Conan Brock, you guys first.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: Which bugs track, you know, from this record or or any record, do you think best showcases Jordan's performance uh in the band?
- 32:17SPEAKER_06: Andrew Tate for me, because he plays drums on it and he absolutely crushes it and slays drums and bass.
- 32:25SPEAKER_06: Drums and bass, yeah.
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: He really is bugs.
- 32:28SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 32:29SPEAKER_04: I've been saying this the whole time.
- 32:31SPEAKER_06: You play guitar on that too?
- 32:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the slidey bits, yeah.
- 32:36SPEAKER_06: That's why we have to finish up as a band.
- 32:37SPEAKER_06: Like, usually you just replace the bass player.
- 32:45SPEAKER_06: It's crazy.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: They're all pretty good.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Um did some stuff for adjustment or razor brushes and stuff.
- 32:57SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah, a raise, yeah.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he played played drums on that one too.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: Or drums and bass, and probably some guitar.
- 33:18SPEAKER_03: I've been seeing the prison line the whole time.
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: With those short shorts, it's been a mission to keep my eyes up here.
- 33:23SPEAKER_03: Eyes are up here, buddy.
- 33:25SPEAKER_03: Come on.
- 33:26SPEAKER_03: I've been holding eye contact the whole time.
- 33:30SPEAKER_03: He proposed it that way.
- 33:32SPEAKER_03: And similar to Max's question, uh, Jordan, which track are you most proud of in the album?
- 33:37SPEAKER_04: Most proud of.
- 33:38SPEAKER_04: I think most proud of would be Damn, that's a hard one.
- 33:44SPEAKER_04: I think just fine uh would be my favorite, which I guess means I'm most proud of it.
- 33:51SPEAKER_04: Because it just sounds exactly how I wanted everything to sound.
- 33:56SPEAKER_04: Like it's as big as it should be, it's as clean as it should be.
- 34:01SPEAKER_04: Um yeah, a lot of my music like sensibilities and style is reflected in that song, even though you know I kind of wrote the bare bones of it, but it just kind of morphed into something, especially when it gets really big, the last massive chorus solo.
- 34:17SPEAKER_06: It's a little bit dirty, then, isn't it?
- 34:18SPEAKER_05: It's a little bit dirty.
- 34:20SPEAKER_04: A little bit dirty, just a little bit.
- 34:22SPEAKER_04: But no, I I I'm really proud of that one, and I I love all the good feedback we've been getting on that one.
- 34:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: Love it.
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: Excellent choice.
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: Well, listeners, if you made it this far, the editing process has been a slog, I'm sure.
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: But go listen to Head Noise, the latest album from Bugs.
- 34:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's out now, so get it wherever you listen to music.
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: Connor, Jordan Brook, thanks so much for taking the time to have a chat with us today.
- 34:42SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much, man.
- 34:43SPEAKER_02: Thank you guys so much.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: Really appreciate it.
