- 0:45Welcome back D down jury Corner podcast with my co-host.
- 0:51Ryan Sigler, I'm Curtis Wilson Brian.
- 0:54We're not talking about Saturday yet which is not now, we're not,
- 0:58we're not lead with Saturday. We got to get a little little
- 1:00happiness in here because the rest of it is going to be so
- 1:02great. Well, this ain't happiness.
- 1:04So we're not talking to this either fantasy bra today, right?
- 1:12That's about the only thing that's been good.
- 1:14So far, luckily. My Colts don't play till
- 1:16tomorrow. So I haven't had the sadness
- 1:18that Curtis has experienced today, but my fantasy team is
- 1:24finally looked competent for the first time all year.
- 1:26And I'm here to say, I welcome this I'm finally get a little
- 1:31Health in there. I got I got two running backs
- 1:34that actually played a full game.
- 1:39I even started the wrong quarterback and I'm in a good
- 1:42position where as long as my boy Jonathan Taylor doesn't go out
- 1:46there and completely blow up and get 33 points tomorrow night.
- 1:51I'm taking that W and I feel pretty good about that.
- 1:53So I'll wait a second. So Jonathan, you're playing
- 1:58Taylor from the Colts tomorrow night, and if he gets 33, you
- 2:03hold on. This is the whole.
- 2:07What do you want, Brian? Do you want the fantasy win?
- 2:09If it's a guarantee that the Colts win, but you lose the
- 2:13fantasy game. What do you do?
- 2:16Yeah, I mean I'll take the win for my team over fantasy but in
- 2:22a perfect world Jonathan Taylor gets thirty two and a half
- 2:25points and I take the W. He takes the W there.
- 2:28The Colts, get the W. Yeah, I'm with you man.
- 2:31The Niners hard today, Lance started.
- 2:34But if they go back to drop below, I have no faith in the
- 2:39coaching staff or the front office to get that.
- 2:42Right. But fantasy for me today, man.
- 2:46Let me tell you who on my fantasy team Ryan, you know,
- 2:49Justin Herbert. Now, put up a 60 Burger today.
- 2:54Yeah, Mike Evans almost put up a 30 burger.
- 2:59Nick Chubb, almost put up a 30 burger.
- 3:03I mean I'm sitting here man. I'm projected to score almost
- 3:08180 and I got two players left ones right now.
- 3:11You'll see me look up Edward to layer for the Chiefs.
- 3:15So fantasy has been sweet to me today.
- 3:20It's been the one good spot of the weekend.
- 3:23Well, you know, It was a nice weekend is a little rainy
- 3:31yesterday. Still hanging out, you know,
- 3:35with the fam having a good time hanging with the neighbors, in a
- 3:37cul-de-sac. We had the homecoming parade
- 3:40kids got more candy than they probably could have for
- 3:42Halloween. We might cancel Halloween, just
- 3:44so we don't have to go back out. We will do that.
- 3:48It was, it was a good, your kids would Riot.
- 3:51Oh yeah. What the hogshead tonight, man.
- 3:54Do I miss that place? That's one of the that's like
- 3:58one of the like the three spots in the West End that I used to
- 4:01go to on a regular. Is that I just can't hit me
- 4:04more. I usually hit them about once
- 4:06every like two to three months now, which is fine.
- 4:09But hogshead, I still usually make about a once-a-month
- 4:15pilgrimage to Hurley's just because that was my spot.
- 4:17That was my bar. Shout out Hurley's Tavern in the
- 4:21West End shops at Innsbruck at the corner.
- 4:25Blocks abroad. There we go, Corner Cox and
- 4:28Broad. shut up, Wes McElroy for the inflection, on the delivery
- 4:34there that, you know, I'm to the point now in my life, my team's
- 4:44don't ruin the rest of my week. I've got a neighbor who's a tech
- 4:47Alum, and me and him said the same thing today, it sucked.
- 4:50But we're older now and it doesn't bother us as much, you
- 4:54know. Clearly, he kind of looked at
- 4:55me. He's like, you're gonna rage
- 4:56tonight, aren't you? Like, yeah, I'm gonna race
- 4:58tonight. He's like, might listen, if I
- 4:59got the kids to sleep, I'm like good deal.
- 5:02This is our therapy session. We get our, we get our shit out
- 5:05here and more or less live. Our normal lives outside of
- 5:09this. You know, we've got other
- 5:11outlets. Well, it's fun.
- 5:14All those fun group chats that were a part of.
- 5:15So have we got, we got those outlets and we got the podcast
- 5:20here. So y'all get to hear our ran
- 5:23sessions here. Hopefully we won't ramble too
- 5:26much here. We'll keep it on topic and give
- 5:28you all something fun to listen to.
- 5:30We're going to try to keep it. The, the navigable is it the
- 5:33navigational? Keep it between the
- 5:35navigational. Buoys.
- 5:39Alright Braun. Crank it up because Jesus did we
- 5:44see some things? Last night?
- 5:48Yeah, I mean what it was is this right here, right?
- 5:59That's what it was. It was the same old song and
- 6:02dance on numerous occasions at critical junctures in the game
- 6:09with to me just some terrible coaching decisions.
- 6:14Now the execution coaching decisions and Brian we're going
- 6:19to hit it right off the bat. Let's go early second quarter
- 6:23text leading 7-nothing. The first drive.
- 6:26We three-and-out. The second.
- 6:28We have this great little Long play.
- 6:29We punch it in. We get the touchdown and we're
- 6:32doing the same thing again. And you know, we kind of look at
- 6:37this Drive-In General Braun. And you know, the athletic past
- 6:43that be be made to Gallo. That's where it starts the team
- 6:48with a great cut. On a couple plays later to get
- 6:51upfield, we bring in blumrich for a wild, turkey gets some
- 6:53yards. In a deep out to trade for yards
- 6:58and then they run that little almost the pop scene.
- 7:02Tutte the guy holds and there's a penalty.
- 7:05We're in the red zone and the next thing you know, we get down
- 7:14but we get down at the one-yard line.
- 7:16Yep, give us the sequence, man. What, let's start with us over.
- 7:20The sequence was the first one. The first one was well, the
- 7:23inside Zone, but he beat scramble to get.
- 7:26Down another tray. They run that sweet tree gets
- 7:28down. Sorry.
- 7:29The other one was the earlier touchdown Drive which I'm gonna
- 7:31hit on later but it was the sequence, we're driving, good
- 7:35return. We're gonna hook on first BB
- 7:38sweeps +6. Sweet to Trey were patient.
- 7:42He waits for wholesome, Luke to set up the screen King still in.
- 7:47Be be scrambled and we got the first down and we're inside the
- 7:50red zone that tray Suite, where he stepped out like at the
- 7:54one-yard line. That were at the one the first
- 7:58play. I don't think anybody I don't, I
- 7:59think we're all. Okay with it.
- 8:00Where it the one, give it one shot running.
- 8:03It was Trey. It was an inside Zone.
- 8:04It was started. Brian what you call next?
- 8:09I'm sure when this when you saw what happened, your light bulb
- 8:13would like, yes. We're going to do something,
- 8:15right? And yeah, I thought I thought we
- 8:20were going to just we were going to get caught her in there
- 8:25either. Work it outside on some of that
- 8:28sweet motion with the with the Jet Sweep or come up the Middle
- 8:32with with Connor on the keeper will single wing action.
- 8:40But what have we, we roll short side of the field.
- 8:45So we take away half the field and it's a play that they've
- 8:49seen because when they, as soon as we are and they snuffed it
- 8:52out, it was supposed to be a little double action and you saw
- 8:56linebackers around the thing alone, work out of throw it
- 8:58away. And we sit here and it's the
- 9:01same old, like the first down play.
- 9:04I get, you know, people who want to be more creative.
- 9:07At the one you got them on their heels if you push them off, it's
- 9:10a touchdown. I don't have an issue with that
- 9:12play. The next play was the one
- 9:14because Connor had came in already in proven that we could
- 9:18get with what is linked with his size.
- 9:21We could get short yardage situation it right dip and then
- 9:26you just completely take away the thing the guy does best.
- 9:30We completely go to a old. Do this call will work that call
- 9:34hasn't worked in a while. It didn't work numerous times.
- 9:37Against West Virginia and like the song says the same old song
- 9:41and dance. And well this is the other thing
- 9:44that happens in the red zone, right?
- 9:45Where you know you feel like The call is like trying to be the
- 9:51smartest guy in the room, like, don't don't overthink the call
- 9:56get us in the end zone, but the right Personnel in the field and
- 10:00get us in the damage Zone. And that's where it felt right,
- 10:03didn't it? Yeah, right personnel and I was
- 10:06just sitting here me and you mentioned that you talked about
- 10:08that sweet action. I was hoping that go up.
- 10:12You keep tray or tail on the right whoever you want to sweep
- 10:14by across and you see how they align.
- 10:18And you probably could say well if they were going to give the
- 10:20outside, leverage you hand, it you let a name for the corner.
- 10:25And you'd let it be a foot race. And if he makes it he makes and
- 10:29if he doesn't then good on them but if they give you the right
- 10:33numbers and they give you the inside leverage, right?
- 10:35Hmm. Run it up.
- 10:36The freakin middle. The guys 6 foot 5.
- 10:40Running Head, Start could find a hole and just jump, but nope.
- 10:46Arie. Wonderful, play caller, thanks.
- 10:50No, let's do this play. This will work and you could see
- 10:52they knew it. You cannot can I say something
- 10:54else? Because I'm going to, I'm going
- 10:56to bury a little bit of the lead here.
- 10:57But guys, in some points in this game, we ran plays under Center
- 11:02Yes, we're going to talk about the first time and there's some
- 11:12other pieces in there, man, we're going to hit it later.
- 11:15If somebody at some point, you got to win the battle of the
- 11:17line of scrimmage and just get Guys across the field.
- 11:19Stop overthinking this shit. Exactly.
- 11:21The third play. We try to run the fade to Trey.
- 11:26He /. BB /, throws it.
- 11:29And can I ask you this before we go any further?
- 11:32Other. Yep.
- 11:34When John Parker Romo came in and essentially the 8 yard line
- 11:38where you're like man I was I was nervous but you know if
- 11:45you're going to kick the field goal which I still don't
- 11:49necessarily agree with here. But if you're going to kick the
- 11:52field goal that that is what it is and actually shoutout to John
- 11:57Parker Romo, because he had a hell of a game.
- 12:01What 343 field goal. Goals at 52 yard could have been
- 12:04good from 62. Yeah, so, I mean, great game by
- 12:08him. Maybe kicks from all over the
- 12:10field but it wasn't really listening.
- 12:14Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 12:17Well, but that's a scenario where you got a feel of the game
- 12:22flow of the game. I would have liked to have
- 12:25number one, had better play sequencing leading up to fourth
- 12:28down, but I would have fucking went for it there.
- 12:31I mean, this is Notre, Dame, it's a game that if you win,
- 12:35it's, you get clout points for that.
- 12:38And it's a game that if you lose and lose it in a way that at
- 12:41least looks like you're, you're pulling out all the stops.
- 12:45It doesn't, it doesn't. You as bad, right?
- 12:49No, not at all. Leave your nuts on the field,
- 12:51both as coaches and players in the players did that.
- 12:54I don't feel like the coaches left their nuts on the field
- 12:56here, they left a lot off the field and it's in the simplistic
- 13:01Math. Run we lost by 3, you get the
- 13:05touchdown there. 7, minus 3 is 4 the itself and there's points
- 13:10all over this, feel that we're going to get rid.
- 13:12That's that's for we got a few more to talk about and obviously
- 13:15that's going to come to the second one.
- 13:16So obviously, SLI, same old song and dance.
- 13:18We get the goal line, cannot punch it in from the one.
- 13:20Even when we put the right Personnel, we do stupid things.
- 13:24All right, then dumb penalties and I know you on this one.
- 13:29Brian you got? I was I was up the refs ass.
- 13:32All right field negates BB scrambles out hits Tavian a
- 13:37little krauser touchdown decline or ineligible field.
- 13:44Downfield they were right at three yards.
- 13:47Get away from the play. Nowhere near the play.
- 13:51Not even actively engaged in a block.
- 13:54No, no. And you know, not engage in a
- 13:56block like they It's things like that.
- 14:03Where, I mean, you can you could call if you're going to call
- 14:07that, you could literally call ineligible, Man, Down feel any
- 14:10rp0 in the history of rpos. So, I hated that call by the
- 14:18absolute letter of the law. Yet probably a half yard further
- 14:22downfield and maybe then he would like to see.
- 14:31But this isn't like they were taking a linebacker or a safety
- 14:35out of flowing to where the play is happening, right?
- 14:39Which is why the rules in place. Yes, that's why the rules in
- 14:43place, I'm sure you got Taught years ago, playing the line, the
- 14:48reason you're in get flagged for this, if you're engaging
- 14:50somebody six yards up field, they're saying, hey I can't try
- 14:53to go over here and tackle the guy for Cano lyman's way up
- 14:56here, and it's not running. The ball has not been thrown yet
- 14:59and I'm already engaged by Lyman six yards of feel.
- 15:02That's, that's what the letter of the law is for.
- 15:07And like I said, from a technical standpoint, by
- 15:10probably about a half yard. It's a penalty.
- 15:13But also In Practical terms, you would not be able to run our po
- 15:19if that got flagged every time. No you wouldn't be able to and
- 15:22there was a lot more there's been a lot more egregious 9
- 15:25called ineligible man downfield. So there there were some in that
- 15:29game that honestly Notre Dame committed that could have been
- 15:32called similarly. So if you get any worse they
- 15:35were engaged. But here, I mean this play out
- 15:39and then the what the next play is the is the face mask, right?
- 15:43That didn't get called. No, no no.
- 15:44That was too. Place.
- 15:45And this is where I have into place, okay?
- 15:47Because we try to throw to the End Zone, it s second and 13 and
- 15:51this is where the sequencing screwed up again.
- 15:54It's where the sequencing is screwed up.
- 15:55Again is second and 13. They're back, they're laying
- 15:58back. We try to go to the end zone.
- 16:01Incomplete pass the next play is that inside screen to Tavian in
- 16:07which he gets his face mask pulled and I sit here and I kind
- 16:13of say, That's the second down call because at second and 13
- 16:20the again most normal offensive coordinators, who have actually
- 16:24done this stuff and made a lot of money.
- 16:27The goal, its second and 13 even in the red zone is going to be
- 16:30like, well, we can still potentially get a first down,
- 16:34let's run something to get anywhere from five.
- 16:39To the first down, let's not try to get it in the end zone
- 16:42because it's probably going to be playing for.
- 16:45And you saw the, the play weren't perfect.
- 16:47It was the wrong down because where we would design get six to
- 16:51eight. It could get you the first down,
- 16:54it got eight. Its third and five, we would
- 16:56have been, I think at the seven or eight.
- 17:00So you still have potential to get the first down.
- 17:02You can go End Zone, you can run the ball, you can do anything
- 17:06you want, but our entire, your entire Red Zone Playbook is
- 17:10open. Whereas, if you you know, in the
- 17:11longer yard is situation, you're essentially having to Hope That
- 17:15you break a couple tackles or everything.
- 17:17Runs exactly perfectly to get that first down and we really
- 17:20came up just a couple yards short.
- 17:22So it goes back, same old song and dance incorrect play
- 17:24sequence. Okay, terrible Place sequencing
- 17:27in that, I'm with that movie sucks.
- 17:30It would have shifted the momentum because at that point
- 17:33in time, it would have went to 22:14.
- 17:37So again, there's there's more points on the field.
- 17:39Right there, there's four more points, but again, the penalty
- 17:42sucked. But the subsequent play-calling
- 17:45is why you didn't have a chance to get a touchdown and how it
- 17:49was backwards. It was done backwards.
- 17:53And that's what irritates me because I sit here and I see
- 17:55that playing, like, why didn't you?
- 17:58It is third and essentially, our coaches heard us enough where we
- 18:01can recover from the referees. Also, hurting us, very true,
- 18:06very true. All right, and obviously Brown,
- 18:09let's go to the last one. Yep, okay, well, this point I'm
- 18:14dr. David got in the lead back
- 18:1721:16. And you set it in the episode
- 18:24Brown. We have to make them Drive Long
- 18:26field. We're going to get into more of
- 18:27the interceptions later but Jermaine Walter was hooked up in
- 18:31a short Zone and I don't know it but we did see him or not but
- 18:36Waller so he just threw that ball and Walter junk gone pick
- 18:40six Beamer ball to the house. It's 20 to 21.
- 18:44Now when we go in the 3-yard line, wondrich is in because
- 18:50this was after For the BB injury situation and okay, you're at
- 18:55the three plumber 10. Like okay I think you can argue
- 18:59can say leaving points on the field or not at that point.
- 19:02I'm that would have made it a three-point versus a two-point
- 19:04game. At the three.
- 19:07I'm acceptable. Love it.
- 19:09That's cool. I get the point, but after the
- 19:12false start penalty by Gallo, we're at the 8th and I'm sitting
- 19:15here like you just kick it now. Just put John Park out there,
- 19:18you kick it through. And, you know, you take your
- 19:23points and hope you can get those points back later if you
- 19:25need them instead. They send them work out there
- 19:31and he passes it, it gets picked and that thing goes back.
- 19:34And I'm sure if you were like me, Brian.
- 19:37I was like, that's just going to get returned.
- 19:38We're about to. We've got to go down after a
- 19:41pussy, going to be down 23:22, thankfully, somebody made a
- 19:46play. What's the, what's the logic in
- 19:49it? Not from the three, we get it
- 19:51from the eighth with your, from, from the three with Connor.
- 19:55You might take that risk. At that point, I We would have
- 19:59still kicked it regardless. It's too early to chase points
- 20:04by going for a two-point conversion.
- 20:05There, ultimately, I'm much more.
- 20:11Okay, with that decision. If the penalty doesn't happen,
- 20:14one of the penalties out there, kick the damn field goal.
- 20:17Yeah, you don't need the points yet.
- 20:19You have the lead. Take the extra point.
- 20:24And you can figure out if you're going to need those two points
- 20:26later. Exactly.
- 20:29So they're don't need him right now.
- 20:31So stop chasing them. Exactly.
- 20:33So we're about 16 minutes in and the Calamity of errors that
- 20:39right there, let's just say it Braun.
- 20:42For 89 points in the three-point loss. step nine points,
- 20:49potentially nine points because of things we have seen from day
- 20:5516 years ago If still aren't being corrected yet that I
- 21:02think, I think that's the thing. So, let's talk about the trends.
- 21:06And I mean, this goes with this game and it applies elsewhere.
- 21:10We're going to get more into this now.
- 21:11But I mean, if these things were one offer these things were
- 21:15occasional things that we saw in a game, we wouldn't be ranting
- 21:19about them right now or we wouldn't be rant about them as
- 21:22hard. We wouldn't be so flippin songs
- 21:26in playing yeah going into the segment it's the repetition of
- 21:33these problems that is the issue.
- 21:35Not the presence. That's it.
- 21:40And we talk about fourth quarter.
- 21:43I mean, when the fourth quarter started and things and I was
- 21:46like, all right well we're doing some good things but we go up
- 21:50eight and as soon as that happen and you know Notre Dame gets the
- 21:54ball back and as soon as that drive started cone comes in, I'm
- 22:00like I've seen this movie before and I think I'd actually you tap
- 22:06think I hit you up. I was like this is this is
- 22:08going. This is going to be Like 2019,
- 22:11isn't it? You said it's going to end point
- 22:13and this was actually, you said, it might have been earlier, you
- 22:18said early fourth and they were just we were up just the one
- 22:22point. Yeah, you said I was like, this
- 22:25is this is going to end up just like 2019 and more or less.
- 22:28It did it did more or less a did the and between you know, having
- 22:34a banged-up quarterback and I know we played the whole game
- 22:38with our backup quarterback whereas We played segments of
- 22:42this game with our backup quarterback and I guess he's our
- 22:47backup quarterback. Probably probably not going into
- 22:50next week because it looks like he injured his ankle pretty
- 22:54badly. But yeah, you know, Virginia
- 22:57Tech goes up with the touchdown. Go up eight.
- 23:03Better day. Yeah yeah this year and gets a
- 23:13few extra yards and it goes back to where the play calling look
- 23:18different again. We run a sweep.
- 23:21You know Lofton got. Welcome to the College Football
- 23:23World with that hit. Yeah, he got welcomed and then
- 23:29BB gets a third down conversion pass and We're often because I
- 23:33mean, they smell blood in the water.
- 23:34After you see him pop the pills on the sidelines, which I'm sure
- 23:37somebody said to them, he hurt, they hit him but he heard her,
- 23:42he's hurt. He's not just a little Nick.
- 23:45And then there were some, we're in the Red Zone there, a couple
- 23:48of kids bad play calls. In that 22, mile an hour speed,
- 23:53then showed up the play called, which I'm still trying to figure
- 23:56out what it was because it wasn't.
- 23:58There he rolled in just like, said, I got to go, I got to go
- 24:04and he goes as, I mean, he runs as fast as he can.
- 24:09Mrs. To Notre Dame Defender scores were up eight.
- 24:14Now let's go back. Brian, we kick the extra point.
- 24:18We score the touchdown, it's a nine-point game.
- 24:21Game dip, they can't. Essentially they can't just
- 24:28score and tie the game. They will have to be.
- 24:30Dang yep. Um but you know then it didn't
- 24:36let's go into that drive about cone coming in.
- 24:40Yes a cone comes in in the in the very first play.
- 24:45On that pass. You get, you get Dax with
- 24:50targeting ejected. I don't like it.
- 24:56I know we were the beneficiary of a tight end on a crack back
- 24:59earlier in the game that didn't really hurt them that much.
- 25:04They were on their second tight end, he hadn't really done a
- 25:06whole lot of damage in their passing attack.
- 25:08He was just kind of a dude. True, you know Dax goes out and
- 25:14wild acts didn't have his best game to actually did get shook
- 25:17in Space by Buckner and Tyree a couple times.
- 25:24Dax did pretty good in his mic coverage, responsibilities in
- 25:27taking away the seam and things like that.
- 25:30And two days after that two plays after dax's out, they
- 25:35attack that scene. And they get a big game that
- 25:38gets them in plus territory. And you said, you start saying
- 25:41shit. I've seen this movie before.
- 25:44I want to ask a question, wrong about that play to me, it wasn't
- 25:48pocketing. It was literally, because the
- 25:51way that part of the way that ball was thrown, the, the head
- 25:53was down, it was Children. It was almost like a more of a
- 25:56clothesline than anything, if they would eject him for a
- 25:59clothesline out of been fine. But here's the here's what I
- 26:02say. They don't throw the flag.
- 26:05That Stadium popped when he knocked it out of that kid.
- 26:08I mean, it went nuts. It reminds me of Diablo lighting
- 26:11up the UVA player last year and that hit I think if that if it's
- 26:16just a hit and they have to carry that I think I think cone
- 26:20is probably in his head like my God they're they're taking guys
- 26:24out instead are the air came out of the defense, the air came out
- 26:29of the stadium, it was definitely one of those momentum
- 26:32Changers like you kind of felt a shift and ultimately that kind
- 26:38of came to fruition, right? So the defense just couldn't
- 26:42really get their legs back under them after that.
- 26:44It looked like the whole tax for Notre.
- 26:47Dame the attacker. Attack the middle, they attack
- 26:51the middle. And you know, I think some of
- 26:53this is saying, you know, It's hard to come cold in the fourth
- 27:00quarter when it matters with a, with the position, like Mike.
- 27:05Right? Yeah.
- 27:06So, I'm, this isn't a knock-on on Dean Ferguson.
- 27:10This isn't a knock on the plate, it's just, you're coming in cold
- 27:14in the fourth quarter, in the kind of the biggest moment of
- 27:18the game. And it's a position where you're
- 27:21having to line up people, you're having to think through a
- 27:24million things. He could have potentially been
- 27:27cut out to ask the blitz to play a man responsibility to come off
- 27:32the edge to play, some sort of, you know, shorts on Mid Zone.
- 27:38It's like a million things. Right.
- 27:40And with the Michael, it's also a flow position because you're
- 27:44all night Dax is Flowing where the balls going, okay.
- 27:48What are they? Doing with it tip.
- 27:51It's like the first quarter against.
- 27:53Oh no! It's like the first drive he's
- 27:56coming in and still has to get a feel of what?
- 27:58What they're trying to do me while they're in full-on attack
- 28:01mode, right? Yeah.
- 28:02And they're they're, they're not feeling us out.
- 28:04They know what they want to do. So that's that's a tough spot.
- 28:08So I feel like that definitely put our defense kind of behind
- 28:12there and I'm not making excuses for them.
- 28:15They definitely could have did a little bit more at the end to
- 28:18keep them out of the in. I think we need to work on that.
- 28:20We do a really good job of getting folks off the field.
- 28:24When they cross the 50, before they get into the Red Zone, we
- 28:27haven't done a great job of once.
- 28:28Teams are getting into the Red Zone on us.
- 28:31Stopping them from scoring, right?
- 28:33We haven't stopped anybody from scoring in the Red Zone, this
- 28:35year. If you get to the Red Zone
- 28:36against us, it's now 11 for 11. It's 11 for 11, so if you get
- 28:41there with us by whatever reason, you're likely to get
- 28:47rear seven and it's been seven more times than it has for E.
- 28:52So and some need to be we need to be better at that.
- 28:56We like I said we've done a good job of giving up yards but
- 29:00getting put folks off the field. You know.
- 29:02Before they get into that Red Zone, we've done a.
- 29:05I'd say probably one of the better teams in the nation.
- 29:07Oh yeah that But once they're in the Red Zone, you know, we're
- 29:13not doing a good job of either turning them over or forcing
- 29:18them into bad spots or they lose yardage in have to kick a
- 29:22tougher field goal so. Alright we need to really just
- 29:25we need to be more consistent. Forcing the field goal all
- 29:27together. I mean if we were if there are
- 29:2911 for 11 but they kicked eight field goals.
- 29:32I wouldn't feel that bad. We're on the other way.
- 29:36We're on the other side of that, right?
- 29:38For more on the Been down there. I think it's an odd but look it
- 29:42up its 11th. I was 747 as of just a couple
- 29:46weeks or as of, you know, the last time we discussed it on the
- 29:49bye week and I think it was five to two.
- 29:52So it's like 922 now touchdowns but, you know, still at that
- 29:56point in time rhyme it's a tie game.
- 30:00Yep. Seen our offense move the ball
- 30:04and then couple, you know, the first pass was incomplete the
- 30:08second pass. Pass was it was the right call
- 30:11because if trade catches that ball we're on plus side of the
- 30:14field with probably a minute and some change left and he missed
- 30:21it and it was could be be a thoughts, you put yourself.
- 30:23If you do that, you put yourself in a situation where either
- 30:27you're getting the field goal or they probably don't have enough
- 30:32time to come back down the field.
- 30:34No, no, they're not. If he catches that, if we don't
- 30:36get the field goal, it's going over time.
- 30:38Yeah. And I don't know if that favors
- 30:40if you'd obviously favors them because of our red zone defense,
- 30:43can I be honest? I hated the first down rat
- 30:45called The the play to little swing out.
- 30:50Yeah I that that was are mailed. I mean, number one, if you're
- 30:54going to have your quarterback who is hurting in his throwing
- 30:59shoulder, Throw the ball, it better be down the fucking
- 31:04field. You are tie.
- 31:07This is not up 10 points with two minutes left.
- 31:11And if you're thinking about getting any sort of clock off
- 31:14the ball, get your running back in space on like a toss or
- 31:18something like that. Keep the clock running there in
- 31:23a different way if you're going to be conservative, be
- 31:25conservative. So, that's my problem there.
- 31:30And, and I love the second downplay.
- 31:32Call Secondhand play. Call was perfect.
- 31:35It was Trey's got to come down with that ball.
- 31:38Could have been a little bit better throne, but if you get
- 31:40both hands on it you got to pull it in.
- 31:42It's true, man. It's very, very true.
- 31:46So you know, BB prize like crazy scramble.
- 31:50Gets 9e short, we have to punt. And then, you know, we had
- 31:55already seen it the way comb had driven before with, you know,
- 31:59with no Dax in the game, you know, it seven plays in a min,
- 32:0730 seconds to go 45 yards and it was, you know, a couple one, big
- 32:15one, small ones. another big one, another solid one in the
- 32:20next thing you know they're at our 30 48-yard field goal right
- 32:23through about 20 seconds left and 3229 and we can sit back and
- 32:30we can just say So many points in the game.
- 32:36So many points where we leaving, you know, multiple points on the
- 32:41field that if you do, that, this doesn't happen.
- 32:45They're out, they don't have the possibility, it changes game
- 32:50Flow at chain. I don't think they, they have
- 32:53Bulgarian, but if they got down 14, I don't think he ever comes
- 32:56in because I think Derek and say, well, we can run the ball
- 32:59but you're sitting there. It's like okay, but if we run
- 33:02the ball, Ball. And we're taking time-consuming
- 33:05drives, they're taking time-consuming trials.
- 33:07They prove, they can move the ball on us not at will, but
- 33:13situationally they can move the ball on us.
- 33:15I don't think he comes in. I think they put Conan and say,
- 33:18Hey, you know, let's let's swing it out, let's swing it.
- 33:21Let's see what we can do because we're not running the football
- 33:24effectively and I mean we didn't do what we needed to do in some
- 33:28ways in that, in that regard on D4, that we did a good job of
- 33:32containing the running game. And that never really hurt us
- 33:35badly. If we were worse in the Red
- 33:39Zone, we were worse than the Red Zone against the run, but in the
- 33:42middle of the field, we did a good job against the run, so
- 33:48they got 170 yards. They ran the ball over 40 times.
- 33:52It should have been, you know, three, three and a half, but I'm
- 33:54not going to argue over over for nothing really.
- 33:58We'll talk about that in a few minutes.
- 34:01But overall, it's just everything we've talked about
- 34:05these first 30 minutes or it's just a cataclysm of coaching,
- 34:09kids played their hearts out. Kids will put when the kids were
- 34:13put in good positions last night.
- 34:15The kids executed in the kids, turned it into positive yards.
- 34:20It wasn't one of these games where it was a, you know, it was
- 34:25a great play call and we screwed up when they were good play
- 34:28calls the kids got yards. There was like, you know, we've
- 34:32talked and we've already done a couple plays here there, where
- 34:35execution was the factor, and one of them being the, the
- 34:39second down call on our last offensive position what I'd say.
- 34:43Next-to-last. Yeah, counting, the, you know,
- 34:46the random to plays, we ran after they kick the field goal.
- 34:49We don't really count those. I mean because BB's arm hurting
- 34:53and less you hit a, you know, a 30-yard host.
- 34:58Get you to Midfield where you can burn a timeout.
- 35:01I mean you had to have some miracle happen and that is was
- 35:04not in the cards last night, all right?
- 35:07Brian. Before we get into some more

- 35:35Dash website, Dash report. Now back to the episode All
- 35:41right, but before we jump into the topic.
- 35:45Explain the rule at the Cincinnati kick today.
- 35:48As you see that one, like it literally when it hit the flag
- 35:52behind it like it went over the bar.
- 35:56It went, it went over the bar outside of the side of the bar,
- 36:01and then hit the flag on the back side.
- 36:03So you never actually went. But between the bar perspective,
- 36:09wise it was, it's hard to see from where they were kicking
- 36:14from. And, from the sidelines, I get
- 36:16why they thought it was in, but it wasn't then.
- 36:21All right, thanks rule. 101. Also, Mason cries being that
- 36:25game. Yeah.
- 36:27It ends up kicking the game winner.
- 36:29But damn. It was an adventure getting
- 36:31there. Look like a golfer who had the
- 36:34hips for about three holes, like just pull, pull, pull finally
- 36:40got it, right? All right.
- 36:42Well, Ron, let's jump back. Offensive notes on and let's
- 36:46talk about this first, the offensive line, we're still
- 36:49trying to find the right group. I know, I noticed Parker
- 36:52Clemente out there a few times last night Silas was back in the
- 36:56The lineup. Thank goodness.
- 36:59I don't remember seeing Johnny Jordan any what did you notice
- 37:03in? You know, what would you do
- 37:06going forward? Because I do remember him.
- 37:09Remember a couple of driving implements was in.
- 37:11We were more effective and not am not going to Silas again.
- 37:15It's tough to pay attention to the offensive line when it's a
- 37:18side view. Yeah.
- 37:22I think the problem is that they haven't found what their best
- 37:25five. Is, and I think this was a bad
- 37:28game to try to keep experimenting with that.
- 37:34I mean, we praise Vice for some things that have happened in the
- 37:38last couple years. But I mean, this is something
- 37:41that's getting a little old this year is that we haven't settled
- 37:44on a five. And that's not not, you know,
- 37:47notwithstanding the fact that we've had some injuries.
- 37:49I mean, that's that's obviously a concern, but that's not the
- 37:53only problem that we're dealing with here.
- 37:55Is that That we're still trying to figure out what our best five
- 37:59grouping is even when we got healthy Guys, across the board,
- 38:04you know, we saw Brock come back, Brock, probably played his
- 38:06best game in the season. Yes, yeah.
- 38:10With the exception of penalties which, you know, the ineligible
- 38:14which, you know, I'm not getting into that again.
- 38:17Yeah, he had one false start. I think that did back us up in a
- 38:22critical situation, but but you saw just blocking lies.
- 38:26He was blocking wise, he played as close to his performances
- 38:32last year as I've seen from him this year.
- 38:36So I don't know if just that's mindset or what it may be, but
- 38:40He definitely went out there and played better, not perfect and
- 38:44definitely still a couple errors there, from a mental standpoint,
- 38:46but he cleaned up the physicality and just being where
- 38:51he needs to be every play. And not losing his many battles
- 38:55in the trenches this week. All right, let me ask this.
- 38:59Having Salle's Parker Clemente banged up for implements
- 39:04obviously. For West Virginia, Middle,
- 39:06Tennessee, State. And I think I don't think he was
- 39:08in Richmond. I don't remember him.
- 39:10Him. I don't remember seeing him at
- 39:11Richmond. If he was, he was how much did
- 39:15having those guys out? Because, again, we talked about
- 39:19it. Those are the games to
- 39:20experiment, to try different place.
- 39:23But when you don't have that opportunity, unfortunately, we
- 39:26had to do it against Notre Dame. Probably a top ten fifteen
- 39:29defense, under Freeman this year.
- 39:32You know, in the next games, I don't get any easier either
- 39:36pits, not as good defensively as Notre Dame, but it's going to,
- 39:40One of those games we were going to have to score.
- 39:45Yeah, we're going to have to score some points against Pitt
- 39:48because they're going to score some points against us.
- 39:49And you know the offensive line has been a problem but we also
- 39:52talk about the running back room.
- 39:55You know we've had inconsistency there, I think you know
- 39:59Blackshear has been the most consistent player offensively in
- 40:02terms of kind of all-purpose yards rate but we just have not
- 40:07gotten a footing where we can get a consistent running.
- 40:10Game going and I still go back to with you know, we looked in
- 40:14this game and we had both, we had two quarterbacks, they were
- 40:16completely banged up. Yeah but we're still not
- 40:20incorporating. The read part of the the option
- 40:25part of the read option like we need to and that's areas where
- 40:31if we can get Braxton the slide that he could actually use use
- 40:34that that at speed to his Advantage especially you know,
- 40:38getting some some Court. Clean alleys on that backside of
- 40:42the, of the play. But we're not doing that.
- 40:46Well, we can't, we can't even do it now.
- 40:48No, because if he plays this week, he's going to be.
- 40:51We know he's banged. Yeah and you know you can
- 40:56speculate is it a dislocated shoulder?
- 41:00I don't think heat or anything. I don't think heat or anything
- 41:03because I think when they took him to the locker room, he
- 41:05wouldn't have been able to. He would have been on throw the
- 41:07ball. If he if he had torn something
- 41:08they would have done the flex test.
- 41:10Right. And essentially reflects test,
- 41:12even with adrenaline pumping, you're going to be there.
- 41:14A range of motion will show. You've torn something you can't
- 41:17do anything, we need an MRI. So it's either a dislocated
- 41:19shoulder or maybe it's a deep bruise on his shoulder where
- 41:23it's like, 12 take the pills last night, you know, to get
- 41:29back in there and be able to throw.
- 41:31So if he's out and then blowing it for goodness, sakes.
- 41:34I mean, Bromley got wrecked on that play, right to his ribs.
- 41:39So he's probably out, you know, we'll hopefully hear something
- 41:44tomorrow. I highly doubt it on, the
- 41:46probably won't put it on stream either tomorrow.
- 41:48So we'll have to be my key and my light McDaniels Andy.
- 41:54Bitter - Zoli has just tweak good tomorrow so we know
- 41:58exactly. So you down to mocks then and
- 42:03knocks and Bullock is the backup.
- 42:05So you know, we talk about the running back who probably had 20
- 42:09Aries that yesterday, we had 37 carries total.
- 42:12They were at 20. So, you know, and you know, he
- 42:17led the way with, you know, eight at 35 and then they gave
- 42:24Sean King of couple, Malachi Thomas, had some run and then
- 42:27Jalen had some run. And it You can see as much as we
- 42:36can say, we need a running quarterback in this offense.
- 42:38I think you got to have running backs.
- 42:41Honestly, do you think you got to have them running backs in
- 42:43this offense, who can go and come with skill sets that are
- 42:47different because Khalil Herbert had it and you can see it Khalil
- 42:52Herbert. Also had a better offensive line
- 42:54and across the group and I think with with the deficiencies that
- 42:59we have at at least two positions on this offensive
- 43:04line, we need some of that run threat element from the
- 43:09quarterback position to really be effective running the
- 43:12football even when we give the ball to the backs.
- 43:15I mean at this point, they're not honoring the read option.
- 43:19Unless we go into the like an inverted v r.
- 43:23Look if we're just running a straight read option, they are
- 43:25not honoring that at all. It was there times last night
- 43:29where Phoebe would have tuck. He would have had 25 or 30
- 43:32yards. Yeah.
- 43:33And can we talk about something else real quick?
- 43:35Since we're on the quarterbacks, okay, You know, we talked about
- 43:40that we talked about Connor, blumrich being a good package
- 43:44quarter bag with a short yardage goal, line things like that.
- 43:48But when when Braxton got hurt, why was blumrich running the
- 43:54single wing are playing be at the quarterback position.
- 43:58Again coaching coaching not players.
- 44:03He went out and executed the best he could the other clown
- 44:06who seemed knocks come in and we No knocks at Clemson in a big
- 44:09situation. Last year.
- 44:11Essentially running normal offense.
- 44:13Yeah. Well, there is, there is That's
- 44:17how the ball is. So messed up, it is.
- 44:20And it feels like they just, they're, they're rudderless,
- 44:23they don't know. When good things happen, it
- 44:27happens because Athletics the players make plays but it's it's
- 44:34it doesn't look like, I mean and even when their scheme the the
- 44:38like it just feels like they have so many periods where it
- 44:43feels like they don't know what they're doing next and it feels
- 44:47like they play tight like they're scared to mess up that
- 44:50they don't go out there and just all right.
- 44:54Have a chance to compete. I want to Proclaim and you tell
- 44:58me if you did not see it Jekyll and Hyde play calling that first
- 45:02touchdown Drive. I listed everything we did.
- 45:04And I know some of that would have been in the script.
- 45:07But last night there were a times where we were like The
- 45:11Comeback route you talking about.
- 45:12We had some of those, some of the out, the 15 yard out.
- 45:17We have some of those obviously, the tadion Robinson play, I
- 45:20talked about. We had some of those we went
- 45:22under Center a cup. Four pounds.
- 45:25That's what we talked about by week, guys.
- 45:27We talked about that was elements of of Memphis, and TCU
- 45:31that had been a part of the Fuente offense, even if it
- 45:35wasn't necessarily a Hallmark of the Fuente offense, when
- 45:39situations call for door, when you really just want to run the
- 45:42damn ball between the tackles, they would go under Center.
- 45:45They would have an h-back that would do multiple things for
- 45:48them when they went under Center, whether it be kind of
- 45:51just leading out as a typical fullback, whether it be Coming
- 45:55across the formation to from kick-outs.
- 45:58It was several different things they would do under Center and
- 46:01we, you know, we finally saw them try that and it worked, but
- 46:08we why not stick with some of that, why not?
- 46:12That's why I still question. It's a Jekyll and Hyde thing
- 46:16who's calling plays who's making these decisions because at
- 46:19times, it seems like you always talk about sequencing.
- 46:23That's one of your big things and I think you playing at
- 46:25Sydney for Marty, you saw a guy who knew how to sequence plays
- 46:29and make setups and show things that will be shown later.
- 46:32And there were times last night, where it felt like the
- 46:35sequences, it was just like boom.
- 46:37And then boom, we didn't food, we did.
- 46:39And next thing, you know, this shit we're in a Red Zone.
- 46:41How the hell are we move the ball in the last three minutes?
- 46:4555 yards. And then there were times last
- 46:48night where it was just like, well, we've seen this story
- 46:50before. It's, that's what I don't get.
- 46:54That's where I go. Question, what's happening
- 46:56behind that room? Can I tell you?
- 46:58When we look our best go for it, we look our best when we need to
- 47:04score and we're running out of clock when we go Tempo and we
- 47:08have to get a point and we start playing loose and not thinking
- 47:13as much Because look, I mean, if and I appreciate before halftime
- 47:22and we could have sat on that ball went to halftime.
- 47:26I thought we were and we didn't come like we're needing out.
- 47:31But we did, and we did. And that, that was as good of a
- 47:36sequence of offense, as they played the entire night.
- 47:39I mean, there were other other drives that went longer and got
- 47:41more points, but that, that those sequence of plays were
- 47:45very good. And the problem is that we don't
- 47:48see that for sustained periods throughout a game.
- 47:52We don't and it really sucks for guys like Trey Turner and Tavian
- 47:56Robinson, whether what your opinion is Trey's the best wide
- 47:59receiver on the team tavio. On the a very close second and
- 48:03those guys last night had 140 of the yards, receiving to add
- 48:08another 10 on his a couple of his runs and they only had I
- 48:13need to do something here. Brian, let me look at the Box
- 48:15real quick. I had it up a second ago and I
- 48:17pulled it down. You're good.
- 48:20We ran last night. A total of 71 plays 71 plays.
- 48:29They got the ball in their hands 16 times.
- 48:34Yeah. That should be closer to 25.
- 48:41So you're telling us and and I'd love to see Target rates of how
- 48:45many were overthrown but give credit there.
- 48:47Weren't many balls that were thrown other than the
- 48:50interception, which we played pretty clean last night.
- 48:53He cost us dearly because it was so deep in our territory.
- 48:57But you've got to be thinking about having to get those guys
- 49:01involved. I mean, you saw earlier we tried
- 49:04to run an outside screen. They say, well, we missed the
- 49:06block and they essentially hit Tavian back in the backfield.
- 49:09But if you're only saying, That the two best Playmakers on your
- 49:12team aren't even getting 25%. Of the touches you know it's
- 49:22like where is your head out? Defense would be one thing if we
- 49:25were the Bastion of spreading the ball around but we're not
- 49:32we're not hitting that category very hard either.
- 49:34It's not like we're you know you've got seven or eight guys
- 49:39with three plus catches either. Right?
- 49:42Well yeah it's just it's a lot. All right.
- 49:46Brian. Anything else you want to hit on
- 49:47the Offense, before we flip over talk about defense for a minute.
- 49:51Let's go ahead and flip over man, I'm ready to move on.
- 49:55We move on Lots on the offense. Well last night, Brian it
- 49:58finally happened, defensive depth, the loss of Alec Bryant,
- 50:01the loss of Robert wound, Justin Beatles, other guys who love.
- 50:04Finally reared its head, especially on that.
- 50:06Last round. They were done for knowing.
- 50:08Garbutt. We're done.
- 50:09We saw Eli Adams and Jalen, a few times on the field.
- 50:14But we and I'm going to be very interesting to see the snap.
- 50:18accounts, but it's one of those things where If we would have
- 50:24just had wooden and Brian to go along.
- 50:29With getting some from Eli know, we had coal Nelson out, saw him
- 50:33later in the game. It reared, its ugly head because
- 50:38they were on the field like we about split time of possession
- 50:43and Notre Dame had you know I think they had 70 plus plays to
- 50:49Notre Dame had 69 please because seven basically seven them.
- 50:53You know, the same number of plays about the same time of
- 50:56possession. Same times I've seen or plays we
- 50:58have been Keeping that somewhere between 55 and 60 with the
- 51:01pacing of the game. Obviously this game with the
- 51:04scoring the pick-6, it changed and it sucks because the
- 51:10interior has the depth, you can see it, but I can probably I'll
- 51:18prefer to you on this if you're eventually late in the game and
- 51:21you know, these guys aren't getting their steps.
- 51:23They can't bulrush. How easy is it for your
- 51:26offensive line? Coach say, listen, y'all just
- 51:28stay in his, they're not going to get past the outside tackles
- 51:33yeah, I mean That's the problem with death, right?
- 51:38And we know that that tier link likes to rotate up to three full
- 51:43sets of lines at the defense of wine.
- 51:45We don't have that we don't we don't have that.
- 51:48We've got five solid D. Tackles, we've got three solid
- 51:53defensive ends with two, that are one undersized and another
- 51:57coming along. And we're just not there where
- 52:02we feel like we can in a situation where they have to
- 52:07score the ball to win the game. You know, the trade-off there is
- 52:11you put your best guys out there that are beat or you put your
- 52:15second line out there. That doesn't have the top-end
- 52:19ability that you need in the situation.
- 52:23So it we were put in a situation where you're damned, if you do
- 52:27damned if you don't and it ended up biting us and you know, you
- 52:30You can second-guess those choices in terms of who, what
- 52:33personnel was out there at that time but you know you want your
- 52:36best guys out there you Hope they've got enough in the tank,
- 52:40but we're at a point now where snap counts are going up and we
- 52:43are even coming off a bye, you know play in 69 snaps and I mean
- 52:49I'm not sure what the snap count was for bar.
- 52:52No. And Garbutt.
- 52:54But if it's anywhere, in that same percentage that we've seen
- 52:57through the first four games, it's Higher than tear leak would
- 53:01like it to be. And you know when we don't have
- 53:05that depth, we get into situations like this.
- 53:07Where were their gas? The defense isn't quite.
- 53:11Yeah, able to able to hold up as long as the back end either and
- 53:17shit happens, man. And in a lot of that goes, we
- 53:21played a bad offensive line. Yesterday, we only got two sacks
- 53:24to Total. We talked about, we need to be
- 53:26up there, but they went to a mobile quarterback.
- 53:30Lee. And I think that's also what
- 53:33gasps the end, right? Because yeah, couldn't be
- 53:37aggressive. They couldn't pin their ears
- 53:38back. They have a state
- 53:39responsibility. They have chased the guy, her
- 53:41say it changed Buckner for two and a half quarters.
- 53:45Yeah. And now they were having to go
- 53:48full-on pass rush and they're gonna they didn't have legs left
- 53:55and we weren't able to rotate enough early in the contest to
- 53:57keep them fresh enough late in the contest.
- 54:01And it's one of those things where it's depth because
- 54:05obviously the quarterback room at Notre Dame is very deep
- 54:08between cone Pine and Buckner. We didn't talk about Buckner
- 54:13because up to this point, Buckner had been more of a
- 54:16gadget blown, right? By God, they sent him out there,
- 54:18they'd run, you know, they'd run a read-option, they'd run some
- 54:21Powers with them. They run some leads and he's, I
- 54:24saw that on the stats, but I was like, they might bring him in,
- 54:27but this is more as Pine or is it Comb.
- 54:32And you know the worst thing that happened he took that run
- 54:35late and we popped him because I don't think Brian Kelly would
- 54:39have went back to comb. I think it Butler will still
- 54:41healthy not taking that pop. I think he sticks with them and
- 54:47maybe we can win the game. Maybe we don't.
- 54:50And a rear was a really a pop. It looks like he kind of twisted
- 54:53his ankle after he made the Royal there.
- 54:56Yeah, it didn't look bad either. Like, oh, he'll be back.
- 55:01But again, an offensive line that had been giving up close to
- 55:0815 hits behind the line of scrimmage.
- 55:15You know, they give up to, or actually do the quarterback
- 55:17change, but then, in the other part Brown, we talked about it.
- 55:20The other week were missed tackles.
- 55:22We have them. I see I can kill him.
- 55:24I had like five times, we had them for losses and we couldn't
- 55:29finish the sack of couldn't finish the Lost.
- 55:31We missed the tackle and they get back to the line of
- 55:33scrimmage or three or four times on Chris Tyree in about two or
- 55:37three times on Buckner and those add up right over the course of
- 55:43Of time. And some of that is, you know,
- 55:46chasing guys that you weren't expected to chase.
- 55:48But at the same time you're coming off of by, we got to have
- 55:52some of that in our mind that they could come out do something
- 55:55different. And it's just another thing we
- 56:00talked about is missed tackles and we didn't.
- 56:03We had more missed tackles this game than we probably had all
- 56:06year. It's right there with the West
- 56:10Virginia game, but fortunately, for us, they They didn't
- 56:14necessarily. Result in knockout punches.
- 56:18It was more more Jabs, more little knife Cuts things, we
- 56:22kept our defense on the field, but unfortunately when we talk
- 56:25about what, how this game came to an end, you know, those are
- 56:29the things that that hurts you because that gives them that
- 56:33that's a 3 that turns into a touchdown potentially because
- 56:36I'm extended drive. And then, the more plays you
- 56:40play, the more gas, you get. Then at the end, you can't can't
- 56:43quite get enough to get them off the field again.
- 56:46So, Every little thing kind of plays off each other.
- 56:50And that's, that's, there's little things we got to get
- 56:52better at. I like the way in my cuts
- 56:55because it was where instead of being second and nine, they
- 56:59missed the tackle. It's second and six.
- 57:03It opens the Playbook more or you stop them.
- 57:08And it's 4th and 2. Well, no, it's they, you missed
- 57:12it. The only got an extra yard.
- 57:14And you know, that's one of those things where you feel for
- 57:18the defenses. Like if you're doing that, it
- 57:21means everybody's getting to the ball.
- 57:24But the goal is, if you gotta stop and where they are because
- 57:27the actually aren't had no. I mean, if you really, if
- 57:30somebody wants to nerd out and has more time than we do, go
- 57:36through and start killing the extra yards.
- 57:37I would probably guess it's somewhere between 60 and 70 just
- 57:41knowing how many tackles we missed.
- 57:43And like, I can't remember when this was and the game had wrote
- 57:47down here, we could not finish a sack off and I think he ran for
- 57:52an additional and therefore through my notes from last
- 58:02night, all the pages of notes from last night.
- 58:07It was later in the game. But anyway, I wrote down, he
- 58:12essentially missed, we couldn't finish the sack, there's gonna
- 58:15be like a six or seven yard loss.
- 58:16And I think he went for like six or seven more.
- 58:19Because a plus 14 game right there, that's a ton on brought.
- 58:25I'll say this about the second day.
- 58:26We might struggle to stop them in the back end.
- 58:28We get closer to the goal. But as you said last week on
- 58:31Wednesday night we force them to drive.
- 58:34We're going to force some turnovers.
- 58:36Yep we housed one. We stop the touchdown dry or a
- 58:40potential scoring drive. This your peoples in Armani
- 58:43Chapman dropped, one that would have set us up perfect.
- 58:47The secondary It's not the elite level yet.
- 58:53They are heading that way but we got we got ball Hawks back
- 58:58there. Something we hadn't seen the
- 59:00last few years on this defense. Yeah, it's probably the I'll be
- 59:04out. We said it before the season.
- 59:06Probably the best. We felt about the secondary at
- 59:08the beginning of a season in a long time.
- 59:10We did know obviously what the combination of Farley and Waller
- 59:15was going to look like start at the start of the season in 2019
- 59:20but I mean, they've lived up to my expectations.
- 59:23So far. Jermaine Waller has come back as
- 59:25a force. We finally got that defensive
- 59:28touchdown this week with him. You know.
- 59:30He's a, he's been a pic machine so far this season and been
- 59:34really solid and coverage. He did get beat at one time, but
- 59:37he was step for step that was just a perfect throw.
- 59:39I mean, it's hard to stop that and the other guys are coming,
- 59:44along Armani Chapman's had, he's had a couple games that haven't
- 59:49been great, but they Still solid enough and he's had some of the
- 59:52better. These played his best overall
- 59:55football this season. So you like seeing that like
- 59:58seeing him come along and in Dorian, strong is continuing to
- 1:00:01progress as well. He needs to get a little bit
- 1:00:04better against the run and being Vivian physical in the
- 1:00:09secondary. I think that's one area that he
- 1:00:11still kind of coming into his own with.
- 1:00:14So I'd like to see more progress there.
- 1:00:16But yeah, Hawks across the board, man.
- 1:00:20And I like, I like the way that's trending.
- 1:00:22So shout out to Ryan Smith for really making, not only, you
- 1:00:26know, things happen on the recruiting Trail, but also
- 1:00:29putting a good product out there on the field as well.
- 1:00:33Putting a good product out there on the field.
- 1:00:35Not afraid to make changes, not afraid to put certain guys ahead
- 1:00:39of certain guys that they've lived up and Jermaine Waller.
- 1:00:45I think he now leads the country in interceptions every week.
- 1:00:50More money, little more money, a little better draft pick every
- 1:00:53single week. Alright, Braun.
- 1:00:56I don't know what you're doing about 1:00 today.
- 1:00:59So what was going on? We're just watching football,
- 1:01:03where you read an article. Because this tweet you sent out
- 1:01:07has blown up. And if you guys haven't seen it,
- 1:01:10122 from Brian these accounts eat 50 52.
- 1:01:13He says the following Since it's being asked, I'll put this out
- 1:01:19there at this point, the benefits of fire and a coach far
- 1:01:23outweigh the risks. If the goal is to compete for an
- 1:01:26AC side, see title every season and potentially make the playoff
- 1:01:29once every six years, which this would have been the year.
- 1:01:32Based on how Clemson has looked the Fugees, ain't the guy and
- 1:01:38you're done with meteor akka T, what was going on?
- 1:01:42What what what just what triggered that part of all well,
- 1:01:46I Was watching football. I had went back and started
- 1:01:48looking at some of the highlights from the game and
- 1:01:52just thinking about how I was feeling in the game last night
- 1:01:55and how I kept replaying it. And, you know, we started this
- 1:02:00with same old song and dance and I feel like that's where we're
- 1:02:03at. And when you, when you're get to
- 1:02:05that point and you're not seeing Improvement, Just getting by
- 1:02:11isn't enough anymore. Now, we've been getting by, we
- 1:02:15can average. We've been mediocre since 2017,
- 1:02:212017? When he I'll throw 2017 in
- 1:02:25there, I think. We had more, we could have won
- 1:02:30more games in 2017 that we did. We exactly.
- 1:02:34And that's and that to me, is when it started, that's that.
- 1:02:38That to me counts, if you're leaving multiple games on your
- 1:02:42schedule every year that you should win, Then that's that,
- 1:02:48that's being mediocre and it started then, you know.
- 1:02:53And and what I'm going to say is this, we're in year six, we're
- 1:02:58Beyond where, okay, you get a pass.
- 1:03:01Yes, that's your for. So 2017, a couple losses that
- 1:03:05should have been wins. You gotta pass 2018, you had a
- 1:03:09bunch of people leave. You had a bunch of people that
- 1:03:12were ineligible You were young as hell.
- 1:03:16Pass, 2019. That's when we started saying
- 1:03:22started, it started early, it started with Duke and then you
- 1:03:27turn it around a little bit. Unfortunately, you left us with
- 1:03:31a bad taste in our mouth with UVA and then Kentucky.
- 1:03:38You start to not get the pass then 2020 happens.
- 1:03:42And pretty much covid and maybe a past appearances wit.
- 1:03:49Gave you a pass. I don't think us as a whole gave
- 1:03:52you a pass, but went gave you a pass.
- 1:03:54We gave you a pass. Alright, so now we're in 2021,
- 1:03:58we're in year six, I'm done giving passes.
- 1:04:02Oh no, and I know that from a from a mathematical standpoint.
- 1:04:06The coastal is still ours for the taking, but does anyone
- 1:04:10listening to this feel comfortable zero?
- 1:04:13That it's going to happen? I've been a confident that
- 1:04:16confident. I'm not saying that we can't do
- 1:04:18it. I'm saying, I have no confidence
- 1:04:21that it will happen. We have this.
- 1:04:23I don't feel confident about Georgia Tech anymore.
- 1:04:27I definitely don't feel confident about pit especially
- 1:04:29because Braxton's, probably not playing, I don't, I'm not sure
- 1:04:32how I feel about Syracuse. I'm not sure how I feel about
- 1:04:36UVA. Duke is the only game left on
- 1:04:38our schedule. That I feel 100% confident.
- 1:04:40We will wish. Absolutely, I'm with you right
- 1:04:44on that and I'm going to, I'm going to still argue.
- 1:04:46I don't I don't count 2017 because 2017 was still majority
- 1:04:51of being requires. That was though, in that year,
- 1:04:56the losses were to Clemson and went to the playoff.
- 1:04:59Miami who had one lost the two games you can say.
- 1:05:02We shouldn't have lost. That we did was Georgia Tech and
- 1:05:06the bowl game? Yep.
- 1:05:08I can't, I can't go into there and say that, you know, it is
- 1:05:11what it is. You lose to a team that similar
- 1:05:13to you. Oklahoma state was good that
- 1:05:15year. The Georgia Tech is the only
- 1:05:17game you can say that you're going to me 2018 up to this
- 1:05:21point and you talk about mediocrity 2018 up to this
- 1:05:24point. We are 22 and 20.
- 1:05:26We are the definition of mediocre.
- 1:05:28We are the definition of average and we are not used to that in
- 1:05:32this program though. Those who started while on this
- 1:05:35program, especially in the mid-1990s when we were in our
- 1:05:38teens. We're not used to that.
- 1:05:41And it's in, it's in a somewhat. It's other mediocrity bull.
- 1:05:45It's a crap that he doesn't make any changes that are takes me.
- 1:05:50When your mediocre you have to make changes.
- 1:05:52He won't fire his friends. He won't, he won't.
- 1:05:56And that's that's a mediocre thing.
- 1:05:58Great coaches. Don't do that great.
- 1:06:00If we were bad and we didn't have talent, and we were doing
- 1:06:03this, Shit, I wouldn't feel bad about it.
- 1:06:05We have talented guys, we screwed up the recruiting
- 1:06:08footprint for a few years. Luckily that's somewhat between
- 1:06:12Ron Smith, Justin Hamilton JC price and Adam Lichtenberg death
- 1:06:15slowly turning the corner. Now, the one thing, I'll give
- 1:06:18him a credit on is and I don't know if this is him or behind
- 1:06:22the scenes people, but it seems like alumni relations have
- 1:06:24gotten there. They were a ton of guys there.
- 1:06:26Last night. 8:00 on a guy's different arrows.
- 1:06:30But everything else is so mediocre.
- 1:06:33I mean, I'm giving that I'm giving that bone to Dwight Vic
- 1:06:36and the stock has been putting together behind the scenes and
- 1:06:39I'm giving to the I mean, yeah, I'm sure some of that kind of
- 1:06:43started with wit and I feel like there is a push from the
- 1:06:49athletic department that's gearing up for that stuff.
- 1:06:52But at the same time I don't think that when they was like,
- 1:06:57Hey this this is going to be a really good idea that's going to
- 1:07:00You know do well for us? I think I think it was something
- 1:07:02that was brought to him. He's like, okay, sure well good
- 1:07:06and and whites doing a hell of a job, you know, bringing that out
- 1:07:09to fruition. You see guys like John
- 1:07:13McLaughlin and Luther Maddie that are doing a lot of good
- 1:07:16engagement on their podcast and on the stuff that they do live
- 1:07:20at the game woman. Yeah, you never bring a people
- 1:07:23that you know you want to hear from.
- 1:07:25You want to hear they're doing current.
- 1:07:26Players are bringing former players in in if nothing else.
- 1:07:31What this era has brought out in Virginia Tech is voices.
- 1:07:39Yeah. Voices of former players voices
- 1:07:41of fans You know, in and I think when we look back in a few years
- 1:07:49it's going to be one of those things where if this didn't
- 1:07:51happen, we're probably a much quieter fan base.
- 1:07:56We're probably more status quo but now it's not because we
- 1:08:02don't want to be mediocre. We we were we were we were we
- 1:08:06were 15 minutes away from the Mountaintop and 99.
- 1:08:09We're 15 minutes away from the Mountaintop.
- 1:08:12And, and then the subsequent years, you know, we were one and
- 1:08:16two games away from. Yeah, we were stacking 10-win
- 1:08:20Seasons. We were stacking trips to the
- 1:08:23big conference title game. Winning ACC championships.
- 1:08:27We were playing Elite teams. We were knocking some.
- 1:08:29Aw, we were in when you get that close in to where we are now.
- 1:08:36That's what hurts that's what hurts.
- 1:08:39And what I fear is there's there's and we've talked about
- 1:08:44this before, Brian. I don't want to see passion
- 1:08:49every every Saturday, we lose the game, I see people on the
- 1:08:52timeline, you know, saying I'll back out there again or fire.
- 1:08:56The guy, we're not apathetic my fear.
- 1:09:00This is my biggest fear what happens between now and June?
- 1:09:04If we don't win a game that hokey Hall of Fame, where these
- 1:09:08going in and Drake fridge, going in that it can be 50,000 people
- 1:09:13there and it'll look nothing like Lane Stadium.
- 1:09:16Mmm, and that's apathy. Once apathy hits wits in a shit
- 1:09:20ton of trouble, and that's bad because we've seen Lane and it's
- 1:09:27best to times this year. Yes, we had it at its fucking
- 1:09:30best UNC. And last night last night was
- 1:09:34fucking gas and the more we move away from that and fans fans
- 1:09:43come out there. They love this team but Got to
- 1:09:46start rewarding your fans with winds or they're not going to
- 1:09:50come back. Nope, they're not going to and
- 1:09:52I'm not saying it's going to be a wholesale all at once thing.
- 1:09:56But you're going to see about five to seven thousand less
- 1:10:00every home game going forward as an, especially once we get on
- 1:10:04that road trip before we come back for Duke.
- 1:10:07Yeah, it's going to be interesting, guys.
- 1:10:10It's going to be interesting and I'm with Curtis here, I'm more
- 1:10:14concerned about what are the long-term.
- 1:10:16Term impacts and especially the long-term impacts if we don't
- 1:10:19make some sort of move this off season, if things go south the
- 1:10:23way we think it's going to go, it has to be made, I don't care
- 1:10:26if it's a 93, I don't care. If we 6 in-1 and lock our way
- 1:10:29into the ACC, how it's got to be because there's nothing changed.
- 1:10:35If you saw it and you can't sit here and whip Babcock you cannot
- 1:10:40sit here and put your chips on this in no changes being made.
- 1:10:45Because the thing is Is what we said.
- 1:10:47I said, at the beginning, what we saw six years ago.
- 1:10:50It's still the same today, there is no such change.
- 1:10:54And when there is no change, you cannot expect to move forward.
- 1:11:00And I know Alabama loss yesterday, it literally took one
- 1:11:05of Nick Saban's. Proteges, it took 23 times for
- 1:11:08somebody. Finally beat that guy.
- 1:11:09One of his Protege. And guess what?
- 1:11:13Think about Nick, Saban Brian. If I told you 10 years ago, Nick
- 1:11:17Saban's going to be running a pseudo power spread with Pro
- 1:11:20Concepts. Not just, you know, two tight
- 1:11:24ends a fullback, run the ball, you would call me crazy.
- 1:11:28Now, when you, what has he done? He saw the future and he said,
- 1:11:33all right, I can get guys that can run this in here.
- 1:11:36I can make this happen and he put in because and and honestly
- 1:11:40because of the athletes he recruits that they They can run
- 1:11:44that type of offense. They can move seamlessly.
- 1:11:48Yeah, he he's like, all right, we can move, we can change this
- 1:11:51and he did. And I think that's that's the
- 1:11:53thing that's frustrating in the thing that kind of highlights
- 1:11:58all the other problems because I feel like, you know, we don't
- 1:12:03get on here and just Crush Justin Fuente for every little
- 1:12:06thing. Yeah, we don't.
- 1:12:10But when we see something that is off, we say, say it.
- 1:12:15And true. The issue that we're having is
- 1:12:18that things have been off in terms of in game play calling,
- 1:12:25in terms of in-game decision-making that go beyond
- 1:12:30just well, he's not recruiting, he came out, he wasn't
- 1:12:33recruiting Virginia like he should, or he's not approachable
- 1:12:37as a person that like we want our head coach to be like all
- 1:12:41that shit. Wouldn't matter if we were
- 1:12:43winning on Saturday's it we care about it but it wouldn't matter
- 1:12:48in the scheme of things went. Well, when you stack, all of
- 1:12:52that stuff, it's hard to make a good case to keep the guy.
- 1:12:55Because if, if you're, if your goals, if you're not making
- 1:13:00progress towards your goals then you're gone.
- 1:13:05You're like that, that that's that's that's how it works.
- 1:13:07Like I can't set goals and make no progress towards them and be
- 1:13:11like, all right, well I'll just try the same thing next year.
- 1:13:14Ear, that's not how it works in the real world that shouldn't be
- 1:13:17how it works in college football.
- 1:13:19The goals of this football team are to go to the ACC title game
- 1:13:24every year And to potentially go and win the ACC.
- 1:13:31Putting yourself in position to play for the college football,
- 1:13:36in the, in the college football playoff, every four to six
- 1:13:39years. If we had a six year, Outcome.
- 1:13:45And you said that one of those we won the ACC.
- 1:13:50Yep. One of those, we had an eighth
- 1:13:54win season and the rest, we were playing for the, for the
- 1:13:57championship. In those other four.
- 1:14:01No one would have a problem. That's that's that's what we
- 1:14:04expect. So that's what we want.
- 1:14:06We be at 10 and a half would be the average every year.
- 1:14:10We'd expect somewhere between nine.
- 1:14:11And yeah somewhere between nine and eleven.
- 1:14:13Yeah, and no one would have an issue but you know what?
- 1:14:17Also that meant Brian they had been they would have been
- 1:14:19changes. We would have seen the same crap
- 1:14:21because usually what happens is you make the changes you get
- 1:14:26better. And when you don't make changes
- 1:14:29and you continue to do the same routines, the same things.
- 1:14:33You see, it's like, how comes it's the momentum thing.
- 1:14:36So even when we see positive in one area, we don't stack that
- 1:14:41with positive in another area. Yeah so we saw some progress in
- 1:14:45recruiting this year but if you don't stack that with winds,
- 1:14:49it's hard to keep classes. It's hard to keep that momentum
- 1:14:51in the recruiting game. There's so many things that are
- 1:14:54negatively impacted by losses on the field in law.
- 1:14:57Losses and gains that you have the chance to win and don't.
- 1:15:01That are going to trickle down. And at some point we got to
- 1:15:04decide is is pursuing. This relationship, a positive
- 1:15:12impact on reaching our goals, and I think we're past that.
- 1:15:15I think we know that pursuing. This relationship further is not
- 1:15:19going to help us reach our goals and if that's what we've
- 1:15:22decided, then we need to move on.
- 1:15:24Yeah it's definitely to me regardless of outcome this year
- 1:15:28it is going to be definitely time to move on.
- 1:15:31You got a big fundraiser in front of you that you look at
- 1:15:35the bottom of our screen. We score with it every week, and
- 1:15:38if you're going to keep the guy that probably win seven games,
- 1:15:40maybe six this year, there's going to be people that just
- 1:15:44aren't going to open up their pocketbooks.
- 1:15:46I mean, I mean, for real, they just be like, I'm not writing
- 1:15:49the check, it's not worth my time because you aren't taking
- 1:15:52this seriously. Yep.
- 1:15:54Brian anything happened besides the Sunday Night, Football game
- 1:15:57currently in a delay. I don't, that's good or bad for
- 1:16:00me, but But, you know, dropping news on players injuries.
- 1:16:08I don't see anything big man. We can talk a little bit about
- 1:16:11pick them before we wrap things up here.
- 1:16:13Oh, you won't actually he's bringing it up, folks.
- 1:16:16I'm bringing it up because I'm gonna go ahead and get up there.
- 1:16:19I was awful and games that we pick different teams.
- 1:16:22I had a weekend man. 7 + 3 7 and 3 M 4 games above 500.
- 1:16:31Let me look here. The the one that got me was
- 1:16:35Michigan, that got both of us though.
- 1:16:37That was a three-point win. I'm still shocked that you took
- 1:16:42Auburn. I mean that was the one that was
- 1:16:46the one. If you ask me, the Penn State
- 1:16:48one that was a coin flip. You had Whoever thought you were
- 1:16:51going to win the game but the orange I thought ago, was going
- 1:16:55to finally struggle a little bit in a game on offense.
- 1:17:03To the point where their defense wasn't able to really put the
- 1:17:05game away, I thought I was going to stay close enough, I was
- 1:17:10wrong. Yeah, I was wrong.
- 1:17:15We're on this week goes, what are you in for Dan 6?
- 1:17:19Yeah, yeah, 14 16. Yeah, hey, but you know what?
- 1:17:23We got to do? Georgia Tech game, right?
- 1:17:26We finally got it right by this much.
- 1:17:30Yeah, she was narrow. Georgia Tech finally didn't bite
- 1:17:36me in the ass. Well done, Georgia Tech, Barely
- 1:17:42There, Lee Georgia Tech barely gets us.
- 1:17:47So, you know, you know, we got a week ahead with Pittman.
- 1:17:53Some people are already saying we're definitely going to beat
- 1:17:55them. If you do that blindly I mean
- 1:18:00the only thing you're going off with that is history.
- 1:18:03Yeah and of how of how pain has historically played in Lane
- 1:18:07Stadium. That's about the only thing that
- 1:18:09gives me confidence about that game.
- 1:18:12It's true. All right.
