- 0:06Speaker 2: Listener discretion is advised. The world's original podcast.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota.com.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Patriots Unfiltered. I hope we play them again this year.
- 0:23Speaker 3: You know what that means.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:26Speaker 3: That would be in the postseason.
- 0:27Speaker 4: It's my fault. I could have been a big boy
- 0:29Speaker 4: and just got my question in, and I allowed myself
- 0:32Speaker 4: to get steamrolled.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Matt Collins, I don't know why, but I'm not hopeful.
- 0:36Speaker 2: What happened? No, it's just a gut feeling for me
- 0:39Speaker 2: that he won't be back soon. As you get into
- 0:41Speaker 2: the stadium, everybody has to have their bags checked. Collins
- 0:44Speaker 2: was behind us. He was in good spirit.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Did you tell him your theory of, like, I don't
- 0:49Speaker 3: think you're.
- 0:49Speaker 4: Going to be back?
- 0:50Speaker 3: And it's dolphins and seafood.
- 0:52Speaker 2: There you go. Let's eat. Two types of dolphin, Paul.
- 0:54Speaker 2: There's the mammal dolphin and the fish dolphin.
- 0:56Speaker 4: Which one is a porpoise?
- 0:57Speaker 2: Jeff writes in, forget a new car. Paul needs a
- 1:00Speaker 2: new pair of shoes.
- 1:01Speaker 4: You like the whole? This is Patriots Unfiltered. Presented by Toyota.com.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:09Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. It is Wednesday here at Gillette Stadium,
- 1:15Speaker 2: and it's turn-the-page day to the Miami Dolphins. Shins up. Yeah,
- 1:20Speaker 2: to do that, we've got Evan, Paul, myself, Deuce, Matt
- 1:23Speaker 2: in the booth. So for the next two hours, we'll
- 1:27Speaker 2: be analyzing, dissecting, and opinionating on this game coming up here.
- 1:33Speaker 2: A get-right game for the Patriots? Not quite. They didn't
- 1:36Speaker 2: play terribly against the Bears, but you want to get
- 1:39Speaker 2: back on that winning track. They're in a tight race
- 1:44Speaker 2: to make the playoffs at the moment and to win
- 1:46Speaker 2: this division. They've got two games to make up. with
- 1:49Speaker 2: the bill. So that begins on Sunday.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Well, it's November football, right? This is where the good
- 1:56Speaker 3: teams start to separate themselves.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Kind of still October, but that's all right.
- 1:59Speaker 3: It will be November.
- 2:02Speaker 4: You're right.
- 2:02Speaker 3: I know it's after Thanksgiving is when the real, I
- 2:05Speaker 3: stand corrected when the real football starts. But this is when,
- 2:08Speaker 3: you know, this is when you start to know what
- 2:09Speaker 3: you have. I mean, you, you've played nearly half the
- 2:12Speaker 3: season now and you know, I just, this, this Patriots team, it's,
- 2:16Speaker 3: I think the, like I said yesterday, the things I
- 2:17Speaker 3: love is Drake May. I love Drake May and I
- 2:19Speaker 3: feel really great about having him as the Patriots quarterback
- 2:22Speaker 3: and he's going to give them a chance every week,
- 2:23Speaker 3: but you know, can they get healthy enough to really
- 2:27Speaker 3: get back into that contender conversation? I think they're a
- 2:29Speaker 3: little bit, maybe on the outside, a lot of the
- 2:31Speaker 3: power ranks, I see them like 11, 12, you know,
- 2:33Speaker 3: that outside the top 10 kind of area, but the
- 2:36Speaker 3: opportunity with the opponents they're playing over the next few
- 2:38Speaker 3: weeks to really get back on track and make some noise.
- 2:40Speaker 2: I think. Yeah. You know, At this point, I'm not
- 2:44Speaker 2: worried about any of these power rankings or quarterback rankings
- 2:48Speaker 2: or any of that. I'm watching the team and making
- 2:51Speaker 2: my own judgments and ranking them against themselves and against
- 2:56Speaker 2: the competition that week. I don't care about all that
- 2:59Speaker 2: right now. We don't have time for that. We don't
- 3:02Speaker 2: have time for that.
- 3:02Speaker 4: You just got finger wet.
- 3:04Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 3:05Speaker 3: I just look with one eye. I just was like, what?
- 3:08Speaker 6: I'm not a big power rankings guy either, but I
- 3:11Speaker 6: understand where both people are coming from.
- 3:14Speaker 3: I never really saw power rankings. How do you know
- 3:16Speaker 3: where you fit? I'm just like Fred telling you. We
- 3:19Speaker 3: watch the games.
- 3:20Speaker 2: All of them? He doesn't watch any of them. Listen,
- 3:23Speaker 2: during the dynasty when you're a fully established team and
- 3:26Speaker 2: you're getting disrespected, it's great locker room fodder. At this point,
- 3:32Speaker 2: we still have a lot to prove to ourselves. When
- 3:34Speaker 2: I say ourselves, I mean the team because I'm part
- 3:36Speaker 2: of the team. Right. Um, so I'm not worried about
- 3:39Speaker 2: what others think, what others think. Yeah. So I try to.
- 3:44Speaker 6: I think the, uh, the quote that I can't get
- 3:47Speaker 6: out of my head from Mike Rabel, I don't, I don't, uh,
- 3:50Speaker 6: always watch the EI interview that he does religiously, but
- 3:55Speaker 6: I did watch the one the other day and, uh,
- 3:58Speaker 6: him basically saying there are certain things at this point
- 4:00Speaker 6: that we're just not going to be good at.
- 4:03Speaker 4: And I, I thought that that.
- 4:04Speaker 6: Was just very honest and, uh about the situation he
- 4:08Speaker 6: said you know we're gonna try to improve the things
- 4:10Speaker 6: that we can improve and we're gonna just have to
- 4:13Speaker 6: live with the fact that there's gonna be certain things
- 4:15Speaker 6: we're not gonna be good at so that makes me
- 4:18Speaker 6: immediately go okay well what are the things we're not
- 4:21Speaker 6: good at that aren't salvageable for this season right.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Tackling, blocking.
- 4:26Speaker 6: Well, I would like to think that those things would
- 4:28Speaker 6: get better, Michael.
- 4:30Speaker 4: Like not turning the ball over. I think that's something
- 4:32Speaker 4: you can reasonably expect to improve. They should be able
- 4:35Speaker 4: to protect the ball better than they have through the
- 4:36Speaker 4: first seven games.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Sure.
- 4:38Speaker 6: And they have for the last, you know, this three-in-one
- 4:41Speaker 6: stretch they have. You know, Drake certainly has protected the
- 4:44Speaker 6: ball better. But I think that it's– that's where we're
- 4:48Speaker 6: at right now, kind of resetting coming off this mini
- 4:50Speaker 6: bye week is– OK, you know, where where are they at,
- 4:54Speaker 6: where where are the Patriots at and what can they
- 4:57Speaker 6: reasonably improve and where are some of the things that
- 5:00Speaker 6: are real weaknesses that they're going to have to mask
- 5:03Speaker 6: in some way, shape or form? And I think the
- 5:05Speaker 6: run game offensively is probably the big one on offense
- 5:09Speaker 6: and the zone coverages on defense is the big one
- 5:11Speaker 6: on defense.
- 5:11Speaker 3: So like.
- 5:13Speaker 6: Do you have to, you can't be bottom of the
- 5:15Speaker 6: league in both of those things and be a contending team.
- 5:19Speaker 6: So they have to figure out ways to at least
- 5:20Speaker 6: be marginally better at those specific things. And I think
- 5:25Speaker 6: that that's where they're trying to start this week. And
- 5:27Speaker 6: I think Miami is like an interesting little test when
- 5:30Speaker 6: it comes to that. Like more like a tune-up game
- 5:32Speaker 6: than like a game you were really worried about them losing.
- 5:35Speaker 2: What did you make of them beating the Jets? Because listen,
- 5:38Speaker 2: the Jets are the Jets.
- 5:40Speaker 4: That's what I made of it.
- 5:41Speaker 2: But they've got talent. And they didn't give up against
- 5:49Speaker 2: the Patriots. They fought. They competed.
- 5:51Speaker 4: The Jets should be beating teams like Miami at home.
- 5:55Speaker 2: I fully expected them to go to Miami and win
- 5:57Speaker 2: that game. And then Miami shows some life. So what
- 6:00Speaker 2: do we make of that?
- 6:02Speaker 6: I think their offense is starting to play a little
- 6:04Speaker 6: bit better. Uh, talking about Miami's, uh, Bobby Sloak is, uh,
- 6:09Speaker 6: you know, had a good start to his offensive coordinator
- 6:13Speaker 6: tenure in Houston and then fizzled and ended up being the, uh,
- 6:17Speaker 6: the fall guy pretty much I would say in Houston. And, uh,
- 6:21Speaker 6: you know, he, he's was retained by Jeff Halfley. He
- 6:23Speaker 6: was the past game coordinator in Miami under Mike McDaniel
- 6:26Speaker 6: last year. Now he's running their offense and, Their offense
- 6:29Speaker 6: is a lot like it was under McDaniel. It's a
- 6:31Speaker 6: West Coast offense. They use a lot of motion. Their
- 6:34Speaker 6: run game is pretty good. They're third in the league
- 6:36Speaker 6: right now in explosive run rate. So that last week
- 6:40Speaker 6: was sort of their formula, which was Malik Willis only
- 6:43Speaker 6: dropped back the past 28 times. They're not putting a
- 6:46Speaker 6: ton on the quarterback in those types of game plans.
- 6:49Speaker 6: Defensively for the Dolphins, I think this is the worst
- 6:52Speaker 6: pass defense in football. I think if you look at
- 6:54Speaker 6: the statistics, 32nd in passer rating, 31st in EPA, 30th
- 6:58Speaker 6: in yards per attempt allowed.
- 7:01Speaker 4: This is a.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Josh Uche isn't doing it?
- 7:04Speaker 4: He's actually having a nice year. Yeah.
- 7:06Speaker 6: But their secondary busts a lot of coverages. There's a
- 7:10Speaker 6: lot of young guys playing on that defense, especially in
- 7:13Speaker 6: important positions like your Mike Linebacker, your starting safety, and
- 7:16Speaker 6: your number one corner are all rookies.
- 7:18Speaker 4: They were allowing something like 72%, completion percent, like just
- 7:22Speaker 4: like wide open archaic dinosaur numbers. Like that's an astounding
- 7:27Speaker 4: number to allow like over, right. It's over 70%. They've
- 7:30Speaker 4: a lot and wide open.
- 7:31Speaker 6: I mean, the very first play of the game last week,
- 7:34Speaker 6: they don't cover Omar Cooper jr. And he gets loose
- 7:36Speaker 6: for like a 50 yard play. They're like very first
- 7:39Speaker 6: play from scrimmage. So they, they are a week past defense,
- 7:43Speaker 6: but I have, I think their offenses last couple of weeks,
- 7:47Speaker 6: you know, a couple of them were garbage touchdown time
- 7:49Speaker 6: touchdowns against Cincinnati, but, I think their offense has been
- 7:52Speaker 6: a little bit more frisky and Willis, even though he's
- 7:55Speaker 6: limited as a passer is athletic. He's got a huge arm,
- 8:00Speaker 6: you know, and there's some talent, rock talent with him.
- 8:02Speaker 6: So I look at this Dolphins team and I think
- 8:05Speaker 6: the offense is.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Okay. Fine.
- 8:09Speaker 6: Their defense, not so much, but be interested to see
- 8:12Speaker 6: Malik Willis on Sunday.
- 8:14Speaker 4: You know, really overhauled it. You know, like this is
- 8:16Speaker 4: a team that openly just said, we got to get
- 8:19Speaker 4: rid of veterans and, tank, you know, they went the
- 8:22Speaker 4: other way. Yep. Um, but when you do that, and
- 8:25Speaker 4: I always make this distinction, it's, there's a difference between
- 8:28Speaker 4: tanking and trying to lose. Like they're tanking in terms
- 8:32Speaker 4: of the roster, they're resetting expect, you know, like their
- 8:35Speaker 4: salaries and all that stuff because of Tua. But what
- 8:39Speaker 4: that leaves you with is a bunch of young guys
- 8:40Speaker 4: that are trying to find their way in the NFL
- 8:42Speaker 4: and they're playing really hard. And now I called them
- 8:45Speaker 4: kind of the anti Raiders. I was very skeptical going
- 8:49Speaker 4: into the Raiders game. I thought that the Patriots would
- 8:51Speaker 4: win that game pretty easily because I wasn't impressed with
- 8:54Speaker 4: the wins that the Raiders had because they didn't play anybody.
- 8:58Speaker 4: They played a bunch of winless teams. The Dolphins are
- 9:01Speaker 4: the opposite. They were 0-5 with losses to three undefeated
- 9:05Speaker 4: teams through five weeks. Kansas City, Minnesota, San Francisco. Now,
- 9:10Speaker 4: two of those teams lost in week seven or whatever
- 9:13Speaker 4: it was. Yeah, but they're good teams. Yeah, but those
- 9:14Speaker 4: are really good teams, and they were pretty competitive in
- 9:17Speaker 4: the Kansas City game at Kansas City and in the
- 9:20Speaker 4: Minnesota game at Minnesota. Both of those games, they didn't
- 9:24Speaker 4: have a chance to win either one of them, but
- 9:25Speaker 4: they hung around both of those games. So, sometimes you
- 9:30Speaker 4: get these young guys, yeah, they might understand what the
- 9:35Speaker 4: deal is, that they're overmatched. Like, Evan just talked about
- 9:37Speaker 4: the secondary. Like, They just probably don't have the horses
- 9:41Speaker 4: to stop you, but they're playing hard, and I was
- 9:45Speaker 4: really impressed. Mike and I talked about this on our
- 9:48Speaker 4: Patriots Unfiltered TV show. I don't know if you watched
- 9:51Speaker 4: any of the end of that game, the Jets game,
- 9:53Speaker 4: but those guys were excited for Jeff Halfley. Jacob Rodriguez
- 9:58Speaker 4: is a young linebacker they've had that's made a million
- 10:01Speaker 4: tackles on a bad defense, obviously. They were really playing
- 10:05Speaker 4: hard for their first-year head coach who got his first
- 10:08Speaker 4: career win. I'm not telling you they can do this
- 10:11Speaker 4: against the Patriots. I don't expect this game to be competitive.
- 10:14Speaker 4: I really don't. But they're playing hard, and I understand
- 10:17Speaker 4: some of the things that That they're trying to do
- 10:20Speaker 4: with young players. Sometimes those teams can be a little dangerous.
- 10:22Speaker 4: I'm just surprised by how.
- 10:26Speaker 6: Much of a mess they are defensively in a lot
- 10:28Speaker 6: of ways.
- 10:29Speaker 4: Because of Halfley, yeah.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Because Halfley's a really good coach on that side of
- 10:32Speaker 3: the ball.
- 10:33Speaker 6: And my guess is that they have a bunch of
- 10:35Speaker 6: young players and a new system that they're installing for
- 10:38Speaker 6: the first time.
- 10:39Speaker 2: They.
- 10:41Speaker 6: Left guys uncovered in that jets game several times, like
- 10:44Speaker 6: guys like just wide open coverage bus.
- 10:46Speaker 3: One of them was at the end of the game.
- 10:48Speaker 6: They didn't cover the running back coming out of the
- 10:50Speaker 6: backfield and Gino Smith hit him for like a 40
- 10:52Speaker 6: yard play on, on literally a check down in the flat.
- 10:55Speaker 6: They're in man coverage and nobody was man coveraging the
- 10:59Speaker 6: back out of the backfield. And like, you know, you
- 11:02Speaker 6: just look at these things like that's that's not a
- 11:04Speaker 6: buttoned up defense, like buttoned up defenses.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Don't just let guys loose like that.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Well, let's talk about Halfley a little bit. We know
- 11:11Speaker 2: him locally was the B.C. head coach for a little bit.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Then he went into the NFL as a coordinator. And
- 11:19Speaker 2: I was surprised when he was named head coach of.
- 11:22Speaker 2: The Dolphins, I didn't even know he was on people's radar,
- 11:25Speaker 2: but I guess he's got a pretty good reputation.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Yeah, it seems that way. I mean, I was surprised too.
- 11:30Speaker 3: I mean, it seemed like, you know, especially around here,
- 11:31Speaker 3: you know, guys get run out of town, out of BC,
- 11:33Speaker 3: and you feel like, oh, that's it. He's never going
- 11:35Speaker 3: to coach again.
- 11:36Speaker 4: He didn't get run out of BC. He took the
- 11:38Speaker 4: defensive coordinator job in the NFL. He didn't want it
- 11:41Speaker 4: out of college.
- 11:41Speaker 2: He took it because, don't you think he knew the
- 11:44Speaker 2: end was coming?
- 11:44Speaker 4: No, he wanted out of college football.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Yeah, he used it as a stepping stone. Okay, okay.
- 11:50Speaker 6: I wasn't... Overly surprised. They hired John Eric Sullivan as
- 11:54Speaker 6: their general manager. He was with the Packers before this
- 11:58Speaker 6: as like one of their top executives in their front office.
- 12:02Speaker 6: And Halfley's been a very good defensive schemer for his
- 12:07Speaker 6: time in Green Bay. He was very well thought of
- 12:09Speaker 6: and had some game plans that were sort of. pretty
- 12:14Speaker 6: held in pretty high regard against some high powered offenses.
- 12:16Speaker 6: So I wasn't totally surprised that he was a coaching candidate.
- 12:20Speaker 6: And then when they hired Sullivan as their general manager,
- 12:23Speaker 6: he brought in Halfley. They brought in Malik Willis. Like
- 12:26Speaker 6: there's a lot of kind of green Bay ties, uh,
- 12:28Speaker 6: to what they're doing operationally. So, I think that that's
- 12:31Speaker 6: really where that, that stems from. I was, I thought
- 12:35Speaker 6: across the board, like even Slowick is a Shanahan tree guy.
- 12:39Speaker 6: And obviously, you know, Matt LaFleur is a Shanahan tree guy.
- 12:41Speaker 6: And so like, there's a lot of like those kinds
- 12:43Speaker 6: of green Bay connections that are really all over their
- 12:47Speaker 6: coaching staff in their front office. So he is one
- 12:50Speaker 6: of them.
- 12:51Speaker 4: I agree with Paul.
- 12:52Speaker 6: I thought that they, they play hard for him and
- 12:54Speaker 6: they were really excited that he, they won that game. And,
- 12:57Speaker 6: The two of them, like, are in the locker room,
- 12:59Speaker 6: him and Sullivan, like, celebrating their first win together and
- 13:03Speaker 6: all that kind of stuff. And we'll see.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Is that a good thing that they won the game
- 13:08Speaker 2: before we play them?
- 13:09Speaker 4: I don't think so.
- 13:09Speaker 3: I think I'd rather have them still reeling and zero wins. Well,
- 13:13Speaker 3: just a little bit of a boost of energy. I
- 13:16Speaker 3: would say that, you know, going in like opportunity and
- 13:18Speaker 3: other AFCs.
- 13:19Speaker 2: I could too.
- 13:20Speaker 6: I kind of think that this is an easier sell
- 13:22Speaker 6: for Vrabel.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Don't go to sleep.
- 13:25Speaker 6: It's like this offense is playing a little bit better.
- 13:28Speaker 6: They've scored 26 a game over their last two games.
- 13:32Speaker 6: They scored 28 or 29 or whatever it was against
- 13:34Speaker 6: the Jets last week. Like, this is not the offense that,
- 13:39Speaker 6: and I'm not saying.
- 13:40Speaker 3: That this is true.
- 13:40Speaker 4: I'm saying this is what you. Sure. It's 28 in
- 13:44Speaker 4: back-to-back games, right?
- 13:45Speaker 2: Yeah. We didn't do that.
- 13:47Speaker 4: To your point, they did get a lot of garbage
- 13:49Speaker 4: time against Cincinnati. I think they scored 28 against the
- 13:51Speaker 4: Jets and 24 against Cincinnati.
- 13:51Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 13:56Speaker 6: And so that, but like still, you know, Malik Willis
- 13:59Speaker 6: is a, he's a talented guy. Like, I don't know
- 14:01Speaker 6: if he can play quarterback, but he's, he's physically talented.
- 14:04Speaker 6: You know, if you fall asleep and let him out
- 14:06Speaker 6: of the pocket and let him pick up scrambles and
- 14:08Speaker 6: things like that, like.
- 14:09Speaker 3: He can be dangerous.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Just get a lead right out of the game. When
- 14:13Speaker 2: HN went down early, I figured that was it for them.
- 14:16Speaker 2: But how is this Ollie Gordon guy?
- 14:18Speaker 6: Well, that's the other thing is, you know, he's kind
- 14:21Speaker 6: of like Braylon Allen. Like, he's a bigger back. Not
- 14:24Speaker 6: quite as big as Braylon Allen, but he's in a
- 14:28Speaker 6: similar mold. And I was saying earlier, they run the
- 14:31Speaker 6: ball well. They're third in the league right now in
- 14:33Speaker 6: explosive run rate. They've run the ball better in this
- 14:36Speaker 6: two-game stretch. They've had a good run game. I think
- 14:39Speaker 6: that they've scheme it up pretty well in.
- 14:41Speaker 3: The run game.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Decent offensive line, too.
- 14:42Speaker 6: Aaron Brewer, really good center for them in the middle. Yep,
- 14:46Speaker 6: number one in motion rate in the league. They're motioning
- 14:49Speaker 6: on over 80% of their plays.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Which speaks to the Mike McDaniel kind of creativity in
- 14:54Speaker 4: the run game.
- 14:55Speaker 2: So, yeah.
- 14:56Speaker 4: I mean, I think you can talk yourself into it,
- 14:58Speaker 4: and I do think... I just did. But Evan's point
- 15:02Speaker 4: about the win sort of makes Rabel's job a little easier.
- 15:06Speaker 4: It gets them focused. Hey, you want to take a nap?
- 15:09Speaker 4: That's why I think Mike's point about the lead, too.
- 15:12Speaker 4: They want to run the ball, and if you can
- 15:14Speaker 4: get the lead and make it a passing situation, I
- 15:18Speaker 4: just don't think they have the horses.
- 15:19Speaker 3: Put it on Willis. They don't have a lot of
- 15:21Speaker 3: takeaways either. So, I mean, to your point, attack that secondary.
- 15:24Speaker 4: Go out there.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Grab a lead. Try to take Gordon out of it
- 15:27Speaker 3: as much as you can and make Malik Willis come
- 15:30Speaker 3: back and have to throw the ball. I think that's
- 15:32Speaker 3: the easy formula, but I don't know.
- 15:34Speaker 2: You mentioned the defense not playing well, pass defense in particular.
- 15:40Speaker 2: do they get pressure on the quarterback at all? Or
- 15:43Speaker 2: is this a good week for the offensive line to
- 15:46Speaker 2: not take a breather?
- 15:47Speaker 3: No, I think Chop Robinson's pretty good.
- 15:50Speaker 4: Yeah, he had a good game Sunday. They don't get
- 15:53Speaker 4: a ton of pressure.
- 15:54Speaker 6: Chop Robinson's the one guy that does pressure. He's obviously
- 15:58Speaker 6: a speed rusher, and they don't blitz a ton. They
- 16:01Speaker 6: played mostly too high shell, mostly zone, so they don't
- 16:05Speaker 6: blitz a ton. Uh, but they, you know, I would
- 16:08Speaker 6: say Robinson's the one guy on the front. You got
- 16:10Speaker 6: a circle, you know, sealer and, uh, Kenneth granted inside
- 16:13Speaker 6: are good, like stuff, run stuffing, sturdy players inside and
- 16:16Speaker 6: their run defenses is okay.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Does Robinson primarily come from the right side? Yeah.
- 16:21Speaker 3: The right side.
- 16:22Speaker 6: Uh, and he's really effective on stunts because he's explosive.
- 16:25Speaker 6: So when he loops around on the stunts, he, he
- 16:28Speaker 6: comes in a hurry. So, uh, you, you have to
- 16:30Speaker 6: be able to, you know, handle that. But like, Moses
- 16:34Speaker 6: handled him pretty good last year. We'll see how healthy
- 16:38Speaker 6: Moses is. And I think you can chip him quite
- 16:41Speaker 6: a bit and not let him go high side. I
- 16:43Speaker 6: think you'll be all right. But he's the one guy
- 16:46Speaker 6: on the front that is like, don't let him get
- 16:48Speaker 6: like a strip sack or like a, you know, it's
- 16:50Speaker 6: second and 20 because he, you know, has a huge
- 16:53Speaker 6: first down sack and that stalls a drive out or
- 16:56Speaker 6: something like that. Like, I don't expect him to, you know,
- 16:58Speaker 6: this isn't Max Crosby where I'm like, oh God, he
- 17:01Speaker 6: can take over the game. Uh, but I do think
- 17:03Speaker 6: that he could have one splash play that, that could
- 17:05Speaker 6: hurt you.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:06Speaker 3: It seems like your guy Uche has found a home.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Like he's, I mean, five starts, he's played the most
- 17:10Speaker 3: defensive snaps, you know, percentage wise of his career. So
- 17:12Speaker 3: he's out there a lot.
- 17:13Speaker 2: I think he's a decent player.
- 17:15Speaker 3: I mean, he's kind of, I lost track of him.
- 17:16Speaker 3: I remember a couple of years ago, you brought Uche.
- 17:18Speaker 3: I was like, where is Uche? But I mean, Kansas city, Philadelphia,
- 17:20Speaker 3: now he's landed in Miami and, you know, seems like
- 17:23Speaker 3: at least for this year.
- 17:24Speaker 4: We're talking about Josh Uche in the postgame show. Look out.
- 17:27Speaker 3: Something went wrong. Well, you gotta try to run at him, right?
- 17:29Speaker 6: I mean, you know, he's actually been pretty much a
- 17:32Speaker 6: little bit better against the run.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Really?
- 17:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:33Speaker 6: He seems a little bit sturdier against the run than
- 17:36Speaker 6: what he was when he was here.
- 17:38Speaker 3: So, I mean, you know, I don't know. I'm not
- 17:41Speaker 3: going to talk up Josh Uche too much.
- 17:43Speaker 4: Good guy.
- 17:43Speaker 6: I'm not like crapping on him, but I think that,
- 17:47Speaker 6: you know, when you look at this defense, Chop is
- 17:49Speaker 6: really the guy that you circle as like, He could
- 17:52Speaker 6: potentially wreck the game if you let him get loose
- 17:54Speaker 6: in the past.
- 17:55Speaker 2: And, you know, the fact that it's in Miami, you
- 17:57Speaker 2: can't discount crazy things that have happened in for the
- 18:02Speaker 2: Patriots playing down there. So, yeah, that's an intangible weather,
- 18:08Speaker 2: early weather report.
- 18:09Speaker 3: It'd be nice.
- 18:09Speaker 4: 85 and humid.
- 18:12Speaker 2: 85 and humid. That's pretty hot.
- 18:13Speaker 6: I did see a little, some scattered thunderstorm possibilities.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Well, that's always.
- 18:18Speaker 3: As well. No, we can't have a thunderstorm.
- 18:20Speaker 4: Especially with a 420.
- 18:21Speaker 3: We can't do a thunder delay with.
- 18:22Speaker 4: But especially with a 425 start.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 18:25Speaker 4: Like the late afternoon Miami thunderstorm is a staple.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Oh, jeez. Oh, jeez. So, yeah. Playing in Miami.
- 18:34Speaker 4: Post game show preempted.
- 18:37Speaker 2: It's a thing for sure. Uh, so today, uh, we'll
- 18:41Speaker 2: get our first participation report from practice. All eyes will
- 18:44Speaker 2: be on that because, uh, see if we can get
- 18:47Speaker 2: a little healthier, any early rumblings about that.
- 18:51Speaker 4: Ben Brown, Ben Brown.
- 18:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:53Speaker 4: It was out there Monday, right?
- 18:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:55Speaker 6: I don't expect like any, anyone, you know, all the
- 18:59Speaker 6: guys that are on IR curves are not eligible for
- 19:02Speaker 6: the most part to come off. Like Matt Collins still
- 19:04Speaker 6: another week away. uh, obviously Dobbs, Vera Tucker, like those
- 19:08Speaker 6: guys are Van Roan.
- 19:10Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 19:11Speaker 6: Uh, I just like wondered to what point, like Ben
- 19:15Speaker 6: Brown's a different story to me. I think Ben Brown
- 19:18Speaker 6: is a better player than prior and, and Rouse. Uh,
- 19:21Speaker 6: I'm not sure what you're getting out of Van Roen.
- 19:23Speaker 6: I mean, the little bit of sample that you saw
- 19:26Speaker 6: against him with Jacksonville was not good before he got hurt.
- 19:30Speaker 6: And so I thought Walter Rouse held his own in
- 19:33Speaker 6: the game on Thursday night.
- 19:35Speaker 4: So are you.
- 19:36Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't know if you're... And you.
- 19:39Speaker 6: Had the whole math thing with the IR returns and
- 19:42Speaker 6: all this stuff. I was a little surprised that both
- 19:45Speaker 6: of those guys... I mean, opening their window is one
- 19:48Speaker 6: thing and designating them as another, but... I don't know
- 19:51Speaker 6: if like you have the luxury to bring back Van
- 19:55Speaker 6: Roe and and Del Pettis at this point with all
- 19:58Speaker 6: the returns that you're.
- 19:59Speaker 4: Probably not both now. Yeah, probably not both.
- 20:01Speaker 2: I agree. It's a good spot for the Patriots. The
- 20:04Speaker 2: chance to go three and oh in the division. And
- 20:06Speaker 2: then you got an out of conference game coming up
- 20:08Speaker 2: similar to what happened last The last two weeks, you
- 20:10Speaker 2: had the Jets and then the Bears. Now you have
- 20:13Speaker 2: the Miami and the Packers.
- 20:14Speaker 6: And then the Lions after that.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Those are two good matchups, too, coming. That just puts
- 20:20Speaker 3: more spotlight on this game of, you know, you gotta
- 20:23Speaker 3: get this one.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Gotta get this one.
- 20:25Speaker 6: That Packers offense is weird. Sorry, that's next week.
- 20:29Speaker 2: Tight pants and, you know, coiffed hair.
- 20:32Speaker 6: Well, Josh Jacobs has been hurt, or been suspended, I
- 20:35Speaker 6: should say. So we'll see if it changes, but They're
- 20:38Speaker 6: throwing the ball more than any team in the league.
- 20:40Speaker 4: Yeah, they can't run it at all. And I watched
- 20:42Speaker 4: a good chunk of that game on Sunday. I did
- 20:45Speaker 4: think Jacobs looked more and more comfortable as the game
- 20:47Speaker 4: went on and started to get some traction. I wouldn't
- 20:50Speaker 4: be surprised if you get a chance to watch them
- 20:53Speaker 4: because they play tomorrow night. I think they play at
- 20:56Speaker 4: home against Carolina. I wonder if Jacobs looks a little
- 21:01Speaker 4: bit better. It does look like you're going to avoid
- 21:03Speaker 4: Micah Parsons because I don't think they're going to start
- 21:05Speaker 4: his window until next week. And my guess is they're
- 21:08Speaker 4: going to give them more than a week of practice
- 21:10Speaker 4: before they activate them. So I think that one might
- 21:13Speaker 4: might be a bullet dodged.
- 21:15Speaker 6: It's a unrecognizable Packers offense right now. Like when you
- 21:19Speaker 6: turn on the tape of the Packers offense, you expect
- 21:21Speaker 6: to see the quarterback on your center, the run game,
- 21:23Speaker 6: the play actions off the run game, like the whole
- 21:26Speaker 6: West Coast thing. And now you turn it on and
- 21:28Speaker 6: it's Jordan Love in the shotgun. Throwing the ball 70%
- 21:31Speaker 6: of the time. And downfield a lot. And I'm like,
- 21:35Speaker 6: who is this? This is not the Mike LaFleur Green
- 21:38Speaker 6: Bay Packers. I'm really interested to see, or Matt LaFleur,
- 21:41Speaker 6: whichever LaFleur is. I'm interested to see them on Thursday
- 21:44Speaker 6: night if they get back to the run game now
- 21:46Speaker 6: that Jacobs is back. But their offensive line has been
- 21:49Speaker 6: terrible all year.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Anyways.
- 21:51Speaker 4: It's kind of like the Chargers last year. They've dealt
- 21:54Speaker 4: with a lot of personnel losses up front and They
- 21:58Speaker 4: lost two centers, I think, on Sunday. Sean Ryan ended
- 22:02Speaker 4: up with a high-angle sprain, so that could be a
- 22:04Speaker 4: big impact. Yeah, Fred, we're overlooking the Dolphins. We're already
- 22:09Speaker 4: on Green Bay.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Might as well get ahead. Did we talk about yesterday
- 22:13Speaker 2: the fact that Beringer was let go? We didn't, actually.
- 22:19Speaker 3: I think we all thought what Mike Vrabel said was he's–
- 22:22Speaker 3: We have a limited amount of spots to return. We
- 22:24Speaker 3: want to give him an opportunity to catch on somewhere.
- 22:26Speaker 3: He's been getting pretty good punts from Mitch Wyschnowski. So
- 22:30Speaker 3: kind of giving Bryce a chance to go out there
- 22:33Speaker 3: and maybe catch on with the team. I mean, I
- 22:35Speaker 3: wouldn't completely rule it out. Maybe down the road he
- 22:37Speaker 3: were to come back if he doesn't land somewhere. But
- 22:39Speaker 3: I think for the most part, they're going to stick
- 22:40Speaker 3: with Wyschnowski now. So probably more doing a solid by
- 22:43Speaker 3: Beringer and giving him a chance.
- 22:45Speaker 4: Yeah, just don't have the luxury.
- 22:47Speaker 6: If he was a huge improvement at punter over Wyschnowski,
- 22:50Speaker 6: then maybe you consider it. But And given that it's
- 22:54Speaker 6: probably not going to move the needles like you just
- 22:56Speaker 6: don't have the luxury to burn a return spot on him.
- 22:59Speaker 6: I talked to him in the locker room not too
- 23:02Speaker 6: long ago, and he's he compared like his injury to
- 23:06Speaker 6: like having like a dead arm. Like he literally like
- 23:09Speaker 6: felt like he had a dead leg. And, like, so
- 23:12Speaker 6: I was interested that, like, it, like, seems like he's
- 23:14Speaker 6: healthy now and he's feeling better, but it was a
- 23:17Speaker 6: weird injury.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Like, it kind of just, like... Is that, like, a pulled, like,
- 23:21Speaker 3: the front muscle kind of thing?
- 23:22Speaker 6: He said that he just, like, some days he could
- 23:24Speaker 6: boom it and some days he.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Well, that kind of matches his performance over the years.
- 23:29Speaker 3: I mean, he's one of the most inconsistent punters I've
- 23:31Speaker 3: seen where he'd have a great one and then he'd
- 23:33Speaker 3: have a terrible one. And I think Wisniewski maybe has
- 23:36Speaker 3: been a little bit more consistent, I would say.
- 23:38Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 23:38Speaker 6: I rely on Barth for that.
- 23:39Speaker 4: He likes to hook it.
- 23:41Speaker 2: A lot of people compare punting to people's golf game.
- 23:47Speaker 2: And I think because the point of impact is so small.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Like on golf, that point of impact is the size
- 23:54Speaker 2: of a golf ball, and here you've got to hit
- 23:56Speaker 2: it just right on the foot. So any little thing
- 24:00Speaker 2: going on with you can affect that point of impact.
- 24:02Speaker 6: Yeah, and also the different types of ways you want
- 24:05Speaker 6: to hit it. Sometimes you want to hit it as
- 24:07Speaker 6: far as you can. Sometimes you want to hit it
- 24:09Speaker 6: as high as you can. Sometimes you want to hit
- 24:11Speaker 6: it directionally, like in a corner or something like that.
- 24:14Speaker 6: Which means you got to be precise. And your swing
- 24:16Speaker 6: has got to be consistent.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:17Speaker 6: Like the mechanics of your swing. And it's the same
- 24:19Speaker 6: with kicking.
- 24:21Speaker 3: I would say Mitch Wischnowski qualifies in the top handful
- 24:23Speaker 3: of players that I've been here for that I'm like,
- 24:26Speaker 3: he plays in the NFL? And I know he's a punter.
- 24:29Speaker 3: So it's not that crazy, but he just looks like
- 24:31Speaker 3: such a beach bum. Remember him walking into the locker
- 24:34Speaker 3: room like, what is this guy rolling in from Malibu?
- 24:37Speaker 3: From Melbourne, actually.
- 24:38Speaker 4: He's a different looking guy than what you normally see
- 24:42Speaker 4: in an NFL locker room.
- 24:43Speaker 3: Good style, like sleeping in a van by the beach.
- 24:45Speaker 4: He's been fine. Fortunately, the Patriots haven't needed him very
- 24:50Speaker 4: often because the offense has generally moved the ball and
- 24:52Speaker 4: they go for a lot of fourth downs. but when
- 24:55Speaker 4: he's been called upon, he's generally done the job. Another
- 24:57Speaker 4: point in yours. Perfectly fine punter. It's amazing how you
- 25:01Speaker 4: can just get punters. You don't have to use fifth-round
- 25:05Speaker 4: picks on them.
- 25:06Speaker 2: After the show, stick around on Patriots.com because Mike Vrabel
- 25:09Speaker 2: will have his Wednesday live press conference. We'll have that
- 25:13Speaker 2: on Patriots.com and YouTube. What are we expecting from him today?
- 25:17Speaker 2: He seems a little annoyed this week.
- 25:23Speaker 3: I think it's a couple weeks. Yeah, I think it's
- 25:25Speaker 3: been a couple weeks. I remember two Fridays ago, he
- 25:28Speaker 3: seemed a little bit edgy. Yeah, I don't know.
- 25:31Speaker 4: I don't know if he's just frustrated with some of
- 25:33Speaker 4: the things.
- 25:34Speaker 3: The thing that keeps popping up in my head with
- 25:35Speaker 3: this team, and I don't know if it's the same
- 25:37Speaker 3: for him, but it's just inconsistency. Especially on the defensive
- 25:40Speaker 3: side of the ball and even individual players where it's, wow,
- 25:43Speaker 3: that was an amazing game or that was an amazing
- 25:45Speaker 3: handful of snaps, but then that's a terrible handful of snaps.
- 25:50Speaker 3: I just think that's, to me, trying to get this
- 25:52Speaker 3: team to just find a baseline of consistency that they
- 25:55Speaker 3: can trust every week. Because the things that I think
- 25:58Speaker 3: you can count on right now are bad things. Like,
- 26:00Speaker 3: you know, you're like, well, we know we can't run
- 26:01Speaker 3: the ball like that. You know, it's just trying to
- 26:04Speaker 3: find who you are and just stick with that identity
- 26:07Speaker 3: and play to that identity and win with that identity.
- 26:09Speaker 3: They were so good at that last year, winning on
- 26:11Speaker 3: the road, you know, tough environments. And I just, it
- 26:14Speaker 3: still feels like we're sitting in the middle of the road,
- 26:16Speaker 3: kind of figuring out what direction this season is going
- 26:18Speaker 3: to go.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Yeah. And you know, Gonzalez didn't have a great game
- 26:22Speaker 2: against Chicago. Hopefully that was part of being ill. I
- 26:27Speaker 2: guess he woke up not feeling too well, and maybe
- 26:30Speaker 2: that affected him. But there's not a lot of studs
- 26:35Speaker 2: that the Patriots have on defense. Gonzalez is one of them.
- 26:39Speaker 2: And you talk about consistency. You need to rely on
- 26:43Speaker 2: him playing well every week. So that's one less thing
- 26:47Speaker 2: to worry about. When he doesn't, that hurts you. Hopefully
- 26:51Speaker 2: Carlton Davis comes back this week. But when you don't
- 26:55Speaker 2: have a lot of studs, you kind of have to,
- 26:58Speaker 2: I'm not saying like guess on defense, but there's more
- 27:03Speaker 2: chance for those glaring errors, you know, that give up
- 27:06Speaker 2: the X play. Because you don't have that pure athletic
- 27:10Speaker 2: studs that can just make up for things when you
- 27:14Speaker 2: don't have the right call.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Even the other end of it too, I'd say, is
- 27:16Speaker 3: you just don't have like, whoa, that was, and you've
- 27:19Speaker 3: seen it occasionally, but like Milton Williams just blew up
- 27:21Speaker 3: the guard, came right and sacked the quarterback, you know,
- 27:23Speaker 3: like those kinds of plays, not, not a lot of them,
- 27:26Speaker 3: you know, it's, it's usually, I don't think.
- 27:28Speaker 4: They're playing like studs. Yeah. I think they have good players.
- 27:31Speaker 6: I just don't think some of them, especially the veteran guys,
- 27:34Speaker 6: like no Williams is a stud. I don't, I just
- 27:37Speaker 6: don't think his impact on the game right now is
- 27:39Speaker 6: as high as we've normally seen.
- 27:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:41Speaker 6: A bar more, I think is good for a couple
- 27:43Speaker 6: of like splash plays a game, but they need him
- 27:45Speaker 6: to be more consistent.
- 27:47Speaker 4: Robert Spillane, Kevin Byard.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Great game, rushing the passer. We love him.
- 27:53Speaker 4: Then a bunch of missed tackles.
- 27:55Speaker 6: That's the spine of your defense.
- 27:57Speaker 4: Williams, Barmore, Spillane, Byard.
- 28:00Speaker 6: Even Craig Woodson, who I think we were all hoping
- 28:02Speaker 6: was going to take this massive year two leap after
- 28:04Speaker 6: the playoffs that he had. I don't know if it's
- 28:06Speaker 6: quite been that. I don't think that they're talent poor
- 28:10Speaker 6: on defense. I just think that they need more from
- 28:12Speaker 6: the guys that they're counting on.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Well, I think they're solid. I think both of those
- 28:17Speaker 2: things can be true.
- 28:18Speaker 4: I agree with Evan's assessment. Milton Williams, to me, is
- 28:21Speaker 4: a really good player who's been good, but not as
- 28:25Speaker 4: impactful as he was last year. I don't know how
- 28:27Speaker 4: much that has to do with the amount of attention
- 28:29Speaker 4: he's getting. This is what I've seen from Barmore for
- 28:32Speaker 4: two-plus years now. Sometimes he shows up, sometimes he doesn't.
- 28:36Speaker 4: And I think there's a reason, and I don't know
- 28:38Speaker 4: if you guys pay attention to this as much as
- 28:40Speaker 4: I do, admittedly, I listen to my shows probably more
- 28:43Speaker 4: than you guys do. And I'm looking right now at
- 28:46Speaker 4: the sports hub Albert Breer is on. I'm listening yesterday
- 28:49Speaker 4: a little bit. Greg Bedard was on with Felger and Maz.
- 28:53Speaker 4: When I hear these guys talk about potential moves for
- 28:55Speaker 4: the Patriots, I often hear Christian Barmore's name. randomly thrown
- 29:00Speaker 4: into potential trades.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Really?
- 29:02Speaker 6: But don't you think this is contractually? Like he's just
- 29:05Speaker 6: an expensive player.
- 29:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:06Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 29:07Speaker 4: But I think they're looking to move on if he like,
- 29:09Speaker 4: so is Milton Williams, an expensive player. I don't hear
- 29:11Speaker 4: his name. Yeah.
- 29:12Speaker 6: I just wonder, like, I'm not saying like the poo poo,
- 29:15Speaker 6: any of the reporters, I'm just saying like, to be fair,
- 29:18Speaker 6: I'm not saying they're reporting it.
- 29:20Speaker 7: Right.
- 29:20Speaker 4: Do you know what I mean? I'm saying that they're
- 29:22Speaker 4: just talking about like, if you, um, if you wanted
- 29:25Speaker 4: to put a package together, you know, um, And I
- 29:29Speaker 4: forget the one that Greg Bedard talked about yesterday, but
- 29:33Speaker 4: he mentioned trying to get trying to get a player
- 29:37Speaker 4: and saying like maybe like Henderson and Barmore you know
- 29:41Speaker 4: as part of a package so you're not like necessarily
- 29:44Speaker 4: giving up your draft capital right which you know at
- 29:47Speaker 4: this point is important because you got to start to
- 29:49Speaker 4: replace some of these guys um you know with draft
- 29:52Speaker 4: picks you already gave up a first round pick for A.J.
- 29:55Speaker 4: Brown so you got to sort of be judicious about
- 29:58Speaker 4: how you you don't want to just, like, Quentin Nelson
- 30:01Speaker 4: third-round pick. You might just say, oh, that doesn't seem
- 30:03Speaker 4: like that much. I think that's a potential important pick
- 30:07Speaker 4: for them.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:08Speaker 4: They're going to need to find some players with those
- 30:10Speaker 4: picks to replace some of the veterans that they do
- 30:13Speaker 4: have that, you know, that'll be going soon.
- 30:15Speaker 6: I think they need to decide on some of these
- 30:17Speaker 6: guys coming up soon that are getting a little bit
- 30:19Speaker 6: older or maybe not playing up to their contract.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Oh, your depth comes from the draft.
- 30:25Speaker 6: But, like, they have to decide on those players' futures,
- 30:27Speaker 6: I think, next offseason of, like, You know, Christian Barmore
- 30:30Speaker 6: is one. We all absolutely love Marcus Jones, but he's
- 30:33Speaker 6: had some struggles this year, last week especially. Like, these
- 30:37Speaker 6: are guys that you were counting on being, like, quality
- 30:41Speaker 6: starters for you defensively that are inconsistent, that have been
- 30:46Speaker 6: a little bit inconsistent.
- 30:47Speaker 4: So you brought up Kevin Bayard, right? So they're going
- 30:50Speaker 4: to need a safety next year because I don't think
- 30:53Speaker 4: they'll feel real good about plugging in Jalen Reed or
- 30:55Speaker 4: Della Pettis next to Craig Woodson in 2027.
- 30:58Speaker 8: Yep.
- 30:59Speaker 7: Right?
- 31:00Speaker 4: Third round pick. That might be an important pick.
- 31:03Speaker 6: Right.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:04Speaker 4: You know, to get a safety.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:06Speaker 3: Just looking at Barmore's contract, too. I mean, pretty significant
- 31:09Speaker 3: jump next year. I mean, his base this year is
- 31:11Speaker 3: 12 million. Goes up to 18 next year. The dead
- 31:14Speaker 3: cap goes from 23 this year down to 7.2 next year. So,
- 31:17Speaker 3: you know, just some minor numbers that, you know, might
- 31:20Speaker 3: make it amenable to.
- 31:21Speaker 4: At least maybe rework him. And I don't want this, like,
- 31:24Speaker 4: to be misinterpreted. I'm not running Christian Barmore out of town. Like,
- 31:27Speaker 4: and I'm not advocating for that. I'm just saying sometimes,
- 31:30Speaker 4: you know, if what we're talking about with some of
- 31:32Speaker 4: the better players aren't really standing out, you start to
- 31:36Speaker 4: look at things like that, that Mike just talked about.
- 31:39Speaker 4: And you look at the production and you're like, OK,
- 31:41Speaker 4: you know, like. I know fans want to get rid
- 31:45Speaker 4: of like, you know. They wanted to trade. Walter Rouse
- 31:50Speaker 4: or Andrew Rupsich for Quentin Nelson. You know, it doesn't
- 31:54Speaker 4: work that way. Like, you need to give up somebody
- 31:57Speaker 4: like Christian Barmore if you want something back in return.
- 32:01Speaker 4: You know, like, sometimes it's got to hurt to get something,
- 32:05Speaker 4: you know, of significance back. And that's, you know, like,
- 32:07Speaker 4: a first-round pick for A.J.
- 32:09Speaker 2: Brown.
- 32:09Speaker 4: Like, it's... That was a trade that needed to be weighed.
- 32:13Speaker 4: You know, it wasn't a no-brainer. I think we all
- 32:15Speaker 4: were in favor of the trade. I still am.
- 32:18Speaker 7: But.
- 32:19Speaker 4: Like that's a lot. First round pick is significant.
- 32:21Speaker 3: I hear everything you're saying though. And that's just like,
- 32:23Speaker 3: what's troubling to me is it's like, are these inconsistencies
- 32:26Speaker 3: just early season ups and downs? Or is this a
- 32:29Speaker 3: sign of what we talk about all the time of
- 32:31Speaker 3: these free agent classes that you bring in and you
- 32:33Speaker 3: get a little boost and but that might be the
- 32:35Speaker 3: peak for at least a couple.
- 32:36Speaker 4: Of those guys. I've thought about that. I think I
- 32:39Speaker 4: talked to you about this a couple of weeks ago.
- 32:41Speaker 4: I've thought about that often over the span of.
- 32:43Speaker 2: The seven weeks.
- 32:44Speaker 3: What are you invested in on defense, you know, over
- 32:46Speaker 3: the last couple of years? I mean, you went out
- 32:47Speaker 3: and signed Mel Williams last year and I know, you know,
- 32:49Speaker 3: before that they had re-signed Barmore and Gonzalez, huge contract,
- 32:52Speaker 3: but you know, otherwise there's a lot of uncertainty around
- 32:55Speaker 3: that defense about Christian Ellis is up next year, you know?
- 32:58Speaker 3: So what do you do next to Spillane? Is Spillane
- 33:00Speaker 3: still good to go? I just, Not to get ahead
- 33:02Speaker 3: of ourselves. This is where my head began.
- 33:03Speaker 4: You're going to need those second, third, fourth round picks
- 33:07Speaker 4: that linebackers. These are not like you're not going to
- 33:09Speaker 4: replace Robert Spillane with like a, you know, a pick
- 33:11Speaker 4: at number 20 more than likely, you know, Jack Campbell
- 33:14Speaker 4: was a first round pick. There's a reason why that
- 33:16Speaker 4: raised eyebrows when Detroit picked him. Because that doesn't generally
- 33:19Speaker 4: happen with that position. So these middle-round picks are important.
- 33:24Speaker 4: And you're talking about getting starters. Where's the depth going
- 33:27Speaker 4: to come from, too? That's another big part of it.
- 33:30Speaker 3: You don't want to be back in this position next
- 33:31Speaker 3: year where they're saying, we still don't have any depth.
- 33:33Speaker 3: It's year three. But it's hard because your free agents
- 33:37Speaker 3: are going to start to age out and you start
- 33:38Speaker 3: to play whack-a-mole a little bit. They've got to have
- 33:41Speaker 3: a good draft on defense. I think that's a big
- 33:42Speaker 3: key to me. You've invested a lot on the offensive
- 33:44Speaker 3: side of the ball in terms of draft capital.
- 33:46Speaker 4: Defense. Defense.
- 33:50Speaker 2: Somebody has to think about it.
- 33:52Speaker 4: Come on.
- 33:52Speaker 6: I'm with you guys. I'm maybe thinking a little bit
- 33:55Speaker 6: more short-term.
- 33:56Speaker 4: This is down the road. In 2028, we don't have
- 33:59Speaker 4: a starting quarterback. This is down the road.
- 34:01Speaker 6: Short-term is just how do you get more from the
- 34:04Speaker 6: veterans that are going to be here? Like Milton Williams, Barmore, Spillane,
- 34:09Speaker 6: Marcus Jones, Bayard. They need those guys to play better.
- 34:13Speaker 6: on defense and what they're playing right now. And how
- 34:17Speaker 6: do you go about doing that? Is it, you know,
- 34:20Speaker 6: can you get at a defensive lineman at the trade
- 34:22Speaker 6: deadline that has more of a rotation so that Williams
- 34:25Speaker 6: and Barmore aren't playing quite as much or aren't.
- 34:27Speaker 3: Doing as much of the dirty work?
- 34:29Speaker 6: Can you get Marcus Jones out of bad matchups personnel wise,
- 34:33Speaker 6: like in some way, shape or form? Can you maybe
- 34:35Speaker 6: get Robert's playing out of coverage a little bit more?
- 34:38Speaker 6: You know, like these are the things that I think of,
- 34:40Speaker 6: you know, cause we're, playing games right now, guys, and
- 34:43Speaker 6: we're not worried about the offseason.
- 34:45Speaker 4: You're right in the short term. Because they're not fixing
- 34:48Speaker 4: it right now. That's not changing anytime soon.
- 34:51Speaker 3: No, but I think looking at the short term for
- 34:53Speaker 3: me is looking at what is this going to tell
- 34:55Speaker 3: us about the offseason? Are these guys able to turn
- 34:57Speaker 3: it around? Oh, we're starting to see it now. But,
- 35:01Speaker 3: I mean, Carlton Davis, Robert Spillane, Kevin Byard, just to
- 35:06Speaker 3: name a few.
- 35:06Speaker 4: We talked about Barmore.
- 35:07Speaker 3: Those are all guys that Are you going to be
- 35:10Speaker 3: part of the future, or is this kind of we're
- 35:12Speaker 3: treading water right now, and you're going to get.
- 35:13Speaker 4: Us through this year, and then we've got to figure
- 35:15Speaker 4: something new out? And I brought it up just in
- 35:18Speaker 4: terms of.
- 35:19Speaker 6: I agree with everything you guys said.
- 35:22Speaker 3: I'm talking about the Dolphins over here.
- 35:24Speaker 2: You're like me with the power right now.
- 35:26Speaker 4: You're talking about fixing the current players, and you are
- 35:29Speaker 4: absolutely right. And I think that's the number one... We
- 35:33Speaker 4: started this whole thing with a little self-scouting, right? What
- 35:35Speaker 4: are they not doing well that.
- 35:39Speaker 4: Realistically can expect to be better. And certainly Milton Williams,
- 35:45Speaker 4: Kevin Byard, Robert Spalding. I don't know about Byard. Byard's
- 35:48Speaker 4: a little long in the tooth. I'm a little kind
- 35:50Speaker 4: of concerned that what you see is what you get there. But,
- 35:52Speaker 4: you know, you can realistically expect improvement from some of
- 35:56Speaker 4: these other guys. I brought up the draft pick stuff
- 36:00Speaker 4: in the future of those spots just because of weighing–
- 36:05Speaker 4: Just how much you can do for reinforcements. Yeah, it's
- 36:08Speaker 4: a valid concern.
- 36:11Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 36:11Speaker 4: I think that that's why to.
- 36:14Speaker 6: The Quentin Nelson trades, the DeForest Buckner trade, my timeline
- 36:18Speaker 6: yesterday was filled with why didn't the Patriots do that?
- 36:21Speaker 6: And I think that along with the draft capital, you
- 36:25Speaker 6: have to think about redundancies on the roster and where
- 36:27Speaker 6: they've already spent big money on the roster. So DeForest
- 36:31Speaker 6: Buckner is a big money acquisition trade. he's getting paid
- 36:35Speaker 6: and he's getting as he should. He's a great player.
- 36:37Speaker 6: You're already paying Milton Williams and Christian Barmore at that position,
- 36:40Speaker 6: you know, top of the market type of salaries. So
- 36:44Speaker 6: adding a third guy at that number, it just from,
- 36:47Speaker 6: I know that fans don't want to hear about the
- 36:50Speaker 6: money and the cap and all that kind of stuff,
- 36:53Speaker 6: but like that, that's how the team has to think, right?
- 36:55Speaker 6: That's how the team has to operate. Quentin Nelson, when
- 36:58Speaker 6: you're already paying Vera Tucker and Mike on when you're
- 37:00Speaker 6: at the guard position, and now you're going to pay
- 37:02Speaker 6: another $ 10 million to Quentin Nelson, that's a lot of
- 37:06Speaker 6: money to invest in one position. So those are the trades.
- 37:11Speaker 6: Just another one to throw out there. I know he
- 37:14Speaker 6: played with Drake at North Carolina. How much of an
- 37:19Speaker 6: improvement is Josh Downs over Demario Douglas?
- 37:22Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 37:23Speaker 3: Does that, he might be a better player.
- 37:25Speaker 6: I think he probably is historically throughout his career, been
- 37:28Speaker 6: a better player.
- 37:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:29Speaker 3: I would agree. Is it enough of a needle mover.
- 37:32Speaker 6: That, okay, now you really have three slot receivers and,
- 37:35Speaker 6: out of your healthy group because Chisholm's also kind of
- 37:37Speaker 6: a slot receiver. So you have Pop, you have Chisholm,
- 37:40Speaker 6: and now you have Josh Downs as well. So, like,
- 37:42Speaker 6: those trades to me just from, like, a redundancy standpoint
- 37:45Speaker 6: just don't make a whole lot of sense. So, like,
- 37:47Speaker 6: where can they fill holes without giving up a ton
- 37:49Speaker 6: of draft capital in areas that they can improve the
- 37:52Speaker 6: team on where they don't have depth or they're a
- 37:55Speaker 6: little bit weaker at that spot?
- 37:56Speaker 4: They're not spending a lot of money already. I liked
- 37:58Speaker 4: your Grover Stewart thing.
- 37:59Speaker 3: That's why I brought up Grover Stewart. Sorry, just to
- 38:02Speaker 3: bring up your thing about... Paul came into my office
- 38:04Speaker 3: yesterday and he was like, did you see what Reese
- 38:06Speaker 3: wrote this weekend about the cap space, that they're down
- 38:08Speaker 3: like a million? And I know usually you're kind of
- 38:10Speaker 3: a cap is crap guy.
- 38:11Speaker 4: The least amount of cap space in the league.
- 38:12Speaker 3: But it signals that if you want to make a
- 38:14Speaker 3: big move like that, you're going to have to do
- 38:16Speaker 3: some juggling. You have to make some decisions. But you're
- 38:18Speaker 3: going to have to.
- 38:19Speaker 4: And before I get attacked, because I know I was
- 38:21Speaker 4: called a hypocrite yesterday. I'm not concerned about the cap space,
- 38:27Speaker 4: but I am concerned with Evan talked about, about the
- 38:29Speaker 4: money and that kind of stuff costs money. And I
- 38:32Speaker 4: don't think it's as much about like, we, we don't
- 38:35Speaker 4: want to spend what it costs to get Quentin Nelson
- 38:38Speaker 4: because we're already like, to me, it's the redundancy of
- 38:42Speaker 4: the position. Now I'm spending a lot of money on
- 38:44Speaker 4: one spot. How much better is my team now? Because
- 38:47Speaker 4: I have like four high price guards suddenly, um, If
- 38:55Speaker 4: it was a position that was, you know, like Khalil
- 38:58Speaker 4: Mack is a guy that I'd be interested in. I
- 39:00Speaker 4: don't think that would cost a whole lot in a trade.
- 39:03Speaker 4: I think you're talking about a day three pick. And
- 39:06Speaker 4: I don't think he is, you know, the most expensive
- 39:10Speaker 4: option out there. I know people have talked about the
- 39:12Speaker 4: kid in Arizona too. Is it Sweat? Josh Sweat. Josh Sweat.
- 39:15Speaker 3: Really?
- 39:18Speaker 4: I mean, Khalil Mack I think is still– valuable in
- 39:22Speaker 4: what he does. He rushes the passer. I think he
- 39:24Speaker 4: has three sacks for a team that's been behind all year.
- 39:26Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 39:27Speaker 4: Um, you know, so I think if you, if you
- 39:31Speaker 4: could make something like that and all of a sudden
- 39:34Speaker 4: now you have sort of a designated pass rusher to
- 39:36Speaker 4: go with your, your young guys that you're happy with
- 39:39Speaker 4: and ponder and Accus.
- 39:40Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 39:41Speaker 4: I think that might make a little more sense. There's
- 39:44Speaker 4: not as much redundancy as Evan talked about with three
- 39:47Speaker 4: high-priced defensive tackles.
- 39:49Speaker 6: Because I've heard the Edge guys a lot, too. And
- 39:51Speaker 6: I think their trio at Edge right now is fine.
- 39:54Speaker 6: They can't stop the run.
- 39:55Speaker 4: I don't. I think they need better. I'm not saying
- 39:59Speaker 4: they need to fix the zone defense. by not having
- 40:02Speaker 4: to devote so much to get after the passer.
- 40:05Speaker 6: But I don't think that Khalil Mack is going to
- 40:07Speaker 6: come in here and change that.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Maybe he won't.
- 40:08Speaker 4: Maybe he's not the right guy.
- 40:10Speaker 3: No, but I need just to complicate it further. It's like, well,
- 40:13Speaker 3: you're paying Harold Landry a bunch of money on IR.
- 40:14Speaker 3: And I'm not saying he's the same player as Khalil
- 40:16Speaker 3: Mack anymore, but it's just further waters down the players
- 40:19Speaker 3: that you have that position. And now, Are you saying,
- 40:21Speaker 3: all right, well, if we bring in this guy now,
- 40:23Speaker 3: that means that we're not going to get Harold Landry
- 40:25Speaker 3: back on the roster this year. You know what I mean?
- 40:27Speaker 4: I'm not expecting that of you.
- 40:28Speaker 3: No, well, that's what I mean. That's like all the
- 40:30Speaker 3: different moving parts of like, OK, you know, there's a
- 40:33Speaker 3: world where I don't think Harold Landry might be OK
- 40:35Speaker 3: to come back. And maybe they think, oh, well, he's
- 40:37Speaker 3: going to come back and give us that boost that,
- 40:39Speaker 3: you know, maybe we don't have to give something up
- 40:40Speaker 3: for a Khalil Mack. We feel that we can get.
- 40:42Speaker 3: I'm not saying that. There's just a bunch of guys.
- 40:45Speaker 3: You're paying Harold Landry a bunch of money. He's sitting
- 40:47Speaker 3: on IR. You don't know when he's going to come back.
- 40:48Speaker 6: I just think that coupling what Rabel said on Monday
- 40:51Speaker 6: of there's certain things that we have to just accept
- 40:53Speaker 6: that we're not good at and some of this trade
- 40:55Speaker 6: deadline discussion.
- 40:57Speaker 3: Drafting wide receivers.
- 40:58Speaker 6: To me, trading for slot receivers and a fourth edge rusher,
- 41:04Speaker 6: I don't see it moving the needle. Trading for a
- 41:08Speaker 6: defensive tackle that can come in here and stuff the
- 41:11Speaker 6: run it's not as sexy as the pass rusher or
- 41:15Speaker 6: the slot receiver, but like, those are the things that
- 41:17Speaker 6: if you marginally or whoever, whoever it is, you know,
- 41:22Speaker 6: like I just threw Grover Stewart's name out there cause
- 41:24Speaker 6: the Colts are trading everybody. But like, you know, like
- 41:27Speaker 6: those guys, like that's, you know, going out and, trading
- 41:30Speaker 6: for Quentin Nelson sounds great, but I just don't know
- 41:34Speaker 6: if they were in the spot to do that right now. Like,
- 41:37Speaker 6: could you go and get a cheaper guard that maybe
- 41:40Speaker 6: is more starting caliber than Walter Rouse and Matt Pryor? Like,
- 41:43Speaker 6: I guess, but they kind of tried that already with
- 41:46Speaker 6: Van Roten.
- 41:46Speaker 3: Well, that's so... Sorry to cut you out.
- 41:48Speaker 4: No, it's okay.
- 41:49Speaker 3: My philosophy on trades is if you feel you're a
- 41:51Speaker 3: team that's a player away to really be a Super
- 41:53Speaker 3: Bowl contender, then.
- 41:54Speaker 4: Go make the move, you know?
- 41:55Speaker 8: But.
- 41:56Speaker 3: I don't think you can go into the trade market saying, well,
- 41:57Speaker 3: we got to fill all those holes that we have
- 41:59Speaker 3: because guys got hurt. You know, like it's just become
- 42:01Speaker 3: so redundant. So I like putting, I like to improve on.
- 42:04Speaker 6: The margins here of like run, run blocking. They have
- 42:09Speaker 6: missed Julian Hill. They do not have a true in-line
- 42:12Speaker 6: blocking tight end. I really think Eli Reardon has got
- 42:15Speaker 6: a bright future. He's a mismatch in the passing game.
- 42:19Speaker 6: Neither him nor Hunter Henry is moving the needle in
- 42:21Speaker 6: the running game right now.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Going out and.
- 42:23Speaker 6: Getting a blocking tight end is not going to cost
- 42:25Speaker 6: you very much.
- 42:26Speaker 2: No.
- 42:27Speaker 4: Yeah, right.
- 42:27Speaker 6: Going out and getting a nose tackle that can stuff
- 42:29Speaker 6: the run is not going to cost you very much.
- 42:32Speaker 6: Going out and getting maybe a third linebacker so you
- 42:34Speaker 6: can play more base defense and hold up in base
- 42:37Speaker 6: defense and not have to put Marcus Jones... at the
- 42:39Speaker 6: point of attack in the run game and on tight
- 42:42Speaker 6: ends and things like that, maybe those are the things
- 42:45Speaker 6: that I'm looking at. Can they make these types of moves?
- 42:49Speaker 6: And everybody else is like, let's go trade for Jonathan Taylor.
- 42:52Speaker 4: So I did get a couple of that in my mentions,
- 42:55Speaker 4: the Jonathan Taylor thing, which I just don't understand what
- 42:58Speaker 4: people like. What is that doing for you? Jonathan Taylor
- 43:02Speaker 4: is a terrific running back. How are the Colts doing?
- 43:05Speaker 2: Well, certainly for what you'd have to give up, you
- 43:08Speaker 2: can't do it. But if you can get him for free,
- 43:11Speaker 2: I'll take him. Yeah, but it's not free. He costs
- 43:14Speaker 2: a lot of money. I know.
- 43:15Speaker 4: And he will cost a lot in resources.
- 43:18Speaker 2: That's my point. So he's off the table.
- 43:21Speaker 4: So you have a guy who's marginally better than Ramondre Stevenson. Like,
- 43:27Speaker 4: is that worth it? Is that moving the needle for you?
- 43:31Speaker 4: I think he's a better player than Stevenson. I don't
- 43:33Speaker 4: think anybody would argue that.
- 43:35Speaker 2: If it was the offseason and I had a chance
- 43:37Speaker 2: to get him, I might consider it.
- 43:39Speaker 3: But I wouldn't.
- 43:41Speaker 2: I think he's a really good player.
- 43:43Speaker 4: He is. He's an excellent running back. And he is
- 43:45Speaker 4: better than Stevenson. But now how much better is your
- 43:48Speaker 4: team because of that? I don't see it.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I mean, if he can't block, then I
- 43:52Speaker 2: don't know if any running backs.
- 43:53Speaker 4: Exactly. Like, Saquon Barkley goes from the Giants to Philadelphia
- 43:57Speaker 4: behind one of the best offensive lines in football, and
- 44:00Speaker 4: he runs for 2,000 yards. Said offensive line starts losing pieces,
- 44:04Speaker 4: and he's irrelevant. Right.
- 44:06Speaker 6: Like, for my fantasy team.
- 44:08Speaker 2: All right, 855-PATS-500 is the hotline. Podcasts at Patriots.com is
- 44:13Speaker 2: the email address. Gavin writes in, he says, it's a
- 44:17Speaker 2: question for Evan. We're all offended.
- 44:19Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 44:20Speaker 2: How can the team begin to establish a better run
- 44:23Speaker 2: game against Miami?
- 44:25Speaker 6: It's pretty good run defense. Like if they have a
- 44:27Speaker 6: strength defensively, it would probably be their run defense. The
- 44:30Speaker 6: thing that I keep going back to with their run
- 44:32Speaker 6: game is like, I think right now they're trying to
- 44:35Speaker 6: just move people in the run game. They're running a
- 44:37Speaker 6: lot of duo, a lot of gap runs, and they're
- 44:39Speaker 6: running a lot from under center. And I just wonder
- 44:42Speaker 6: if like, they need to go in the opposite direction.
- 44:44Speaker 4: Like instead of trying to like.
- 44:46Speaker 6: They're going to have eight guys in the box and
- 44:48Speaker 6: we're going to have eight blockers and we're just going
- 44:50Speaker 6: to move bodies and we're going to get hat on
- 44:52Speaker 6: a hat. Like, can you spread out teams a little
- 44:54Speaker 6: bit more and then try to run the ball against
- 44:56Speaker 6: lighter boxes that way? Like, I think this is clearly
- 44:59Speaker 6: not working. I'm trying to good hat talk. I'm trying
- 45:03Speaker 6: to smash your head into the line of scrimmage. They
- 45:05Speaker 6: don't have the horses to move bodies and create running
- 45:08Speaker 6: lanes that way. So like maybe go the opposite direction.
- 45:11Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 45:11Speaker 3: I'd be interested to see what Gilliam looks like if
- 45:13Speaker 3: he comes back, if that makes any difference. He didn't
- 45:16Speaker 3: move my needle. I love the fullback position. That's my
- 45:19Speaker 3: favorite growing up. I was excited to get that guy,
- 45:22Speaker 3: and it just didn't translate. I don't know if there'd
- 45:24Speaker 3: be anything.
- 45:25Speaker 4: Mike Dussault and Paul Perillo could not have been any
- 45:27Speaker 4: more different as kids. He's focused on the defense and
- 45:31Speaker 4: the fullback.
- 45:32Speaker 3: I didn't like defense as a kid.
- 45:34Speaker 4: Let's throw bombs to Stanley Morgan and let's have fun.
- 45:38Speaker 6: Mike is stressed out about the defense. I'm stressed out
- 45:40Speaker 6: about the running game. The fact that they can't run
- 45:43Speaker 6: the ball and haven't been able to for two years
- 45:45Speaker 6: frustrates me.
- 45:47Speaker 3: Poor Drake is back there trying to do it all
- 45:50Speaker 3: by himself.
- 45:51Speaker 6: Without a run game, without play-action passing, without any of
- 45:53Speaker 6: the easy buttons that you move the ball offensively, Poor
- 45:57Speaker 6: Drake is like, it's third and eight, and they're blitzing me,
- 46:00Speaker 6: and I got to roll right and break a tackle
- 46:02Speaker 6: and throw to Hunter Henry.
- 46:03Speaker 2: Do you think that if Drake continues to improve in
- 46:07Speaker 2: the short game, take the profits, that will help the
- 46:09Speaker 2: run game eventually? No.
- 46:11Speaker 6: I think that Drake May is already factoring in on
- 46:14Speaker 6: how they're already playing too high, and they're already playing
- 46:18Speaker 6: cloud coverages and things like that to take away his
- 46:20Speaker 6: deep ball, and they still can't.
- 46:21Speaker 4: Run the ball.
- 46:23Speaker 3: Like, this is all.
- 46:25Speaker 6: Blocking and schematic when it comes to the run game.
- 46:27Speaker 2: Numbers.
- 46:28Speaker 6: And like maybe a tiny bit of Travion Henderson not
- 46:31Speaker 6: seeing it well.
- 46:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 46:32Speaker 6: But like I would say 90% of this is blocking
- 46:35Speaker 6: and scheme.
- 46:36Speaker 4: And it just, it's broken.
- 46:38Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 46:39Speaker 2: I'm laughing while I read this. No disrespect, Angel from
- 46:43Speaker 2: El Paso, but trade email.
- 46:46Speaker 4: Jonathan Taylor.
- 46:47Speaker 2: McBride for next year's first round pick. You're going to
- 46:50Speaker 2: give up first-round pick?
- 46:51Speaker 3: Trey McBride? Danny McBride?
- 46:55Speaker 2: Max Crosby for two second-round picks.
- 46:58Speaker 4: Check.
- 46:59Speaker 3: We're doing all this, right?
- 47:00Speaker 2: Jonathan Taylor for Henderson and a fourth.
- 47:04Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, and the Colts will give you that. Colts
- 47:07Speaker 4: will get back to you on that. Colts will give
- 47:09Speaker 4: Jonathan Taylor for a fourth-round pick. You're not going to
- 47:12Speaker 4: pull that over Carly, man. Where's the thing she knows?
- 47:15Speaker 3: She knows ball. She's running the show.
- 47:18Speaker 4: Didn't Max Crosby just get traded for two first-round picks?
- 47:21Speaker 3: Right.
- 47:22Speaker 4: Now we're going to get him for two second-round picks.
- 47:25Speaker 2: Franklin in Baltimore writes in, I think the game in
- 47:29Speaker 2: Miami has sneaky shootout potential insofar as the game playing
- 47:33Speaker 2: out kind of similar to the Thursday night game versus
- 47:36Speaker 2: the Bears. I foresee the Patriots offense having their way
- 47:39Speaker 2: with the Dolphin defense. Me too. And the running game
- 47:42Speaker 2: in particular having their best performance. I disagree. But Miami
- 47:46Speaker 2: has enough on offense, I feel, to always stay within
- 47:49Speaker 2: 10 points. While I don't think the Patriots will ever
- 47:52Speaker 2: be at risk of losing the game, I do think
- 47:54Speaker 2: Miami will keep it close up until the late third quarter.
- 47:58Speaker 2: Final score, Patriots 38, Finns 26.
- 48:03Speaker 4: That would really concern me. I just wonder defensively, like,
- 48:07Speaker 4: A 26 would concern me.
- 48:09Speaker 6: They can throw a bunch of scheme at Malik Willis defensively,
- 48:12Speaker 6: and he'll probably lose his head and start to turn
- 48:16Speaker 6: the ball over or start making negative plays and taking
- 48:18Speaker 6: sacks and things like that.
- 48:20Speaker 4: I just wouldn't, like, care.
- 48:21Speaker 6: Yeah. Because I know you can throw a bunch of
- 48:24Speaker 6: scheme at bad quarterbacks.
- 48:26Speaker 4: Like, that's not.
- 48:27Speaker 2: I agree.
- 48:27Speaker 4: That's why it would scare me. I know. That scenario,
- 48:30Speaker 4: and if you heard, like, some of the detail that
- 48:32Speaker 4: he had, it was kind of sneaky shootout potential... competitive
- 48:38Speaker 4: into the third quarter and then the Patriots pull away.
- 48:42Speaker 4: If it was like what Cincinnati did a couple of
- 48:44Speaker 4: weeks ago and it's 31 to 10 in the fourth
- 48:48Speaker 4: quarter and they rack up a couple of touchdowns, that
- 48:50Speaker 4: wouldn't concern me as much because what Evan said probably
- 48:54Speaker 4: happened and they, yeah, they shut them down. And then when,
- 48:58Speaker 4: you know, they, they got vanilla at the end and
- 49:00Speaker 4: they got some garbage. If, if this is like, In
- 49:03Speaker 4: other words, it's like 28-26, and then the Patriots finally
- 49:05Speaker 4: just put the hammer down in the fourth quarter. That
- 49:07Speaker 4: would scare the crap out of me. This is not
- 49:10Speaker 4: a good offense.
- 49:10Speaker 3: That's the theme of this game to me. What moves
- 49:12Speaker 3: the needle for you, actually? What would actually move your
- 49:16Speaker 3: needle coming out of this game? They go down there.
- 49:18Speaker 3: They beat the crap out of the Dolphins. it looks
- 49:20Speaker 3: kind of like you think it's there's almost nothing that
- 49:21Speaker 3: doesn't really move the needle right right but like what
- 49:24Speaker 3: would like what little details.
- 49:25Speaker 6: Like you said it is unfortunate like standard zone coverage
- 49:28Speaker 6: yeah because that's what they should do against the quarterback
- 49:32Speaker 6: mike malik willis and play it well it wouldn't change
- 49:35Speaker 6: my entire perception.
- 49:36Speaker 2: Of the team.
- 49:36Speaker 3: But your needle would move a little bit? It would
- 49:38Speaker 3: at least make me feel a little bit better.
- 49:39Speaker 6: But if they just go into this game and they
- 49:42Speaker 6: run a bunch of zeros and stuff like that and
- 49:43Speaker 6: they're just throwing the kitchen sink at them, I'm like, okay,
- 49:46Speaker 6: I know.
- 49:47Speaker 3: You can do that.
- 49:47Speaker 4: Like, Zach Kor, I know you have scheme. That's a
- 49:50Speaker 4: great point.
- 49:50Speaker 3: But can you sit.
- 49:51Speaker 4: Can you line up and stop somebody?
- 49:52Speaker 3: Can you rush for.
- 49:54Speaker 6: And drop seven into a zone and make Malik Willis
- 49:57Speaker 6: sit there and read it out and find the open
- 49:59Speaker 6: guy and play tight in zone coverage and maybe cause
- 50:02Speaker 6: some turnovers and things. If they do that, then I'd
- 50:04Speaker 6: be like, okay. And eliminate Ollie Gordon, which they've been
- 50:07Speaker 6: a little leaky. I know the numbers against the runner
- 50:09Speaker 6: are okay, but we've seen it the last couple of weeks.
- 50:13Speaker 3: The other team's been able to run.
- 50:14Speaker 4: The ball pretty well. Does Ollie Gordon get shut down?
- 50:17Speaker 4: That would make me feel good.
- 50:18Speaker 2: I think team-wise it'd be tough for me to move
- 50:21Speaker 2: the needle in this particular game, but... individual performances could
- 50:25Speaker 2: move the needle for me on that player. For example,
- 50:28Speaker 2: if Kyle Williams has eight catches and runs good routes.
- 50:31Speaker 4: And, It's exactly the opposite for me. I would go
- 50:35Speaker 4: to your thing.
- 50:36Speaker 2: They really were the worst.
- 50:38Speaker 3: Pass defense I've ever seen.
- 50:39Speaker 4: Offensively, I got nothing.
- 50:41Speaker 2: But let's see him do that. Let's see him do it.
- 50:45Speaker 4: I'd like to see A.J. Brown look a little bit
- 50:46Speaker 4: more like A.J. Brown, but I'm still going to have
- 50:49Speaker 4: that asterisk of it's Miami.
- 50:50Speaker 2: I know, but individual performances for that player could move
- 50:53Speaker 2: the needle for me. Yeah.
- 50:55Speaker 3: I mean, they could run the ball. Like if, you know,
- 50:57Speaker 3: Romandre and Travion got loose. Everything to me is going
- 50:59Speaker 3: to be unfortunate.
- 51:00Speaker 4: Mike brought, I think this is what you were getting at.
- 51:03Speaker 4: The only needle that can possibly move in this game
- 51:05Speaker 4: is bad.
- 51:06Speaker 2: I don't like that.
- 51:07Speaker 6: I think offensively, I am going to throw out everything
- 51:10Speaker 6: from this game because Drake may should, dice up this
- 51:13Speaker 6: Dolphins defense. And I expect him to, I'm actually looking
- 51:17Speaker 6: forward to see like, can he have a game with
- 51:19Speaker 6: zero minus plays?
- 51:20Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 51:21Speaker 6: Because I think it's possible against a defense like this
- 51:23Speaker 6: in Miami, because they're just not going to stress them.
- 51:26Speaker 6: But defensively, like I said, like go out there, rush
- 51:30Speaker 6: four guys at Malik Willis, play zone coverage. And let's
- 51:34Speaker 6: see if you can actually do that consistently. Can you
- 51:37Speaker 6: get pressure with four? Can you take away zone windows
- 51:41Speaker 6: in the backend and, if they just start blitzing them
- 51:44Speaker 6: and heating them up like they did, you know, earlier
- 51:46Speaker 6: in the year to guys like cousins and Aaron Rogers
- 51:48Speaker 6: and stuff like that, I'm going to be like, well,
- 51:50Speaker 6: I knew you could win like this.
- 51:52Speaker 4: He was something different.
- 51:53Speaker 2: All right. Uh, time for a break. Uh, we'll have
- 51:56Speaker 2: more Miami talk and I see some other interesting emails
- 51:59Speaker 2: that I'll get to, uh, right after this.

- 54:08Speaker 3: The OG, baby. Ryan Morey. God's Gift of Museums is here.
- 54:11Speaker 4: Wow, are we honored.
- 54:12Speaker 9: But we're really honored because number 66 in your program
- 54:15Speaker 9: and number one in our hearts, at least for.
- 54:17Speaker 3: Now, is Lonnie Paxton.
- 54:18Speaker 4: Thanks for having me, boys. Thanks for coming in.
- 54:20Speaker 2: I really appreciate it.
- 54:21Speaker 9: So, like, the organization is honoring the 2001 champions of
- 54:25Speaker 9: which Lonnie was a huge part of. Lonnie's a three-time
- 54:27Speaker 9: Super Bowl champion. But to notice how important this weekend
- 54:31Speaker 9: was for Lonnie Paxton, he had the ultimate honor that
- 54:35Speaker 9: he had to get away from because he wasn't going to.
- 54:37Speaker 4: Miss this honor. Please explain.
- 54:40Speaker 12: I was fortunate enough to get the call to be
- 54:42Speaker 12: part of the inaugural class for Centennial High School, where
- 54:45Speaker 12: I went to high school, in.
- 54:46Speaker 4: Their Hall of Fame.
- 54:46Speaker 12: And so they just announced 10 athletes they put in
- 54:49Speaker 12: the Hall of Fame.
- 54:49Speaker 2: I was one of them.
- 54:51Speaker 12: Humbled and honored but it just so happened it happened
- 54:53Speaker 12: on the same weekend as this and so my wife's
- 54:55Speaker 12: from here i was bringing all the kids back here
- 54:57Speaker 12: so it made sense to just all come here so
- 54:59Speaker 12: my parents went my dad wore my letterman's jacket my
- 55:02Speaker 12: 66 jersey uh super bowl ring and you know what
- 55:06Speaker 12: was uh got to see all my old friends and
- 55:08Speaker 12: sent me a bunch of pictures.
- 55:08Speaker 13: Last night i love that you still have your letterman's
- 55:10Speaker 13: jacket from high school.
- 55:12Speaker 2: I didn't think I did.
- 55:13Speaker 12: It was deep in the depths of the garage.
- 55:16Speaker 3: I have mine. It's corduroy. Wow, that shows your age.
- 55:21Speaker 13: My college one has leather sleeves like the traditional one,
- 55:24Speaker 13: but my high school one is corduroy, so that's pretty bad.
- 55:28Speaker 9: So Lonnie, with all the travel and planning, I mean,
- 55:30Speaker 9: it seems obvious why I got to do this, but
- 55:32Speaker 9: that must have been like a tinge of disappointment.
- 55:34Speaker 4: Like, I certainly wish I could do both.
- 55:37Speaker 9: And I bet you were living vicariously through your mom
- 55:39Speaker 9: and dad with the pictures and everything.
- 55:40Speaker 4: I was.
- 55:41Speaker 12: I mean, I was trying to figure out every which
- 55:43Speaker 12: way to red eye to arrive right now.
- 55:46Speaker 2: And get it done.
- 55:47Speaker 12: But my son had his freshman football game on Thursday.
- 55:50Speaker 12: We go to Carlsbad High School, Ted Johnson's alma mater. So,
- 55:54Speaker 12: you know, his name's on the wall. I think his
- 55:55Speaker 12: family named the gym or something that they're in. But,
- 55:58Speaker 12: you know, it's a tight knit community and it was
- 56:00Speaker 12: a big game for them. And so I stayed. And yeah,
- 56:02Speaker 12: I just couldn't pull it off, but they're going to
- 56:04Speaker 12: do a banquet in the spring. So that's awesome.
- 56:06Speaker 3: But it's got to be an incredible.
- 56:07Speaker 2: And I always say this.
- 56:08Speaker 13: I don't care what Hall of Fame someone decides to
- 56:11Speaker 13: put you in. If you get into a Hall of Fame,
- 56:13Speaker 13: it's pretty awesome.
- 56:14Speaker 3: It's pretty freaking cool.
- 56:15Speaker 12: And I mean, that's where it all began. You know,
- 56:16Speaker 12: Southern California growing up wasn't, you know, our high school
- 56:20Speaker 12: wasn't very good back in the day. It was a
- 56:22Speaker 12: brand new school and I was not very highly recruited.
- 56:26Speaker 12: And so just was grinding. I was playing offense, defensive line,
- 56:30Speaker 12: defensive line and long snapping. And, you know, then I
- 56:34Speaker 12: go to Sac State and then I come here. And
- 56:36Speaker 12: so I'm just fortunate enough that those were the roots
- 56:38Speaker 12: that were planted and had some great coaches, great support.
- 56:41Speaker 2: And, you know, what an honor.
- 56:43Speaker 9: So let's get into that. As you mentioned, long snapping.
- 56:45Speaker 9: I mean, who is born or who plays sports and says,
- 56:51Speaker 9: I'm going to be a long snapper? And of course,
- 56:53Speaker 9: you're talking about your O-line, D-line, but it's such a
- 56:56Speaker 9: specialized skill.
- 56:57Speaker 3: When did you know that you were good at it?
- 57:00Speaker 12: Oh, well, you know, I grew up just playing all sports, football, basketball, baseball,
- 57:05Speaker 12: rode BMX bikes, you know, did everything that the kids do.
- 57:08Speaker 12: And I could always throw really well, was a pitcher.
- 57:11Speaker 12: I started out at quarterback. You know, just a bigger
- 57:14Speaker 12: body could sling the rock. About the third or fourth
- 57:18Speaker 12: game of my freshman year, I dove on a fumble
- 57:20Speaker 12: because center snapped it on one.
- 57:22Speaker 3: It was on two.
- 57:23Speaker 12: And we fumbled it, dove on it, broke his ankle,
- 57:26Speaker 12: and they moved me to center. And they said, you're
- 57:27Speaker 12: never going back to quarterback. So just, you know, now
- 57:29Speaker 12: you're on the line. And growing up, my dad had
- 57:33Speaker 12: season tickets.
- 57:34Speaker 2: To the L.A.
- 57:34Speaker 12: Rams, who was in Anaheim Stadium back in the day.
- 57:37Speaker 12: We'd always go early. And right in front of our seats,
- 57:40Speaker 12: we probably sat on the 40-yard line, about.
- 57:42Speaker 3: 20 rows up.
- 57:43Speaker 12: Was the snapper and he was just throwing rockets underneath
- 57:46Speaker 12: his legs right in front of us and we'd go
- 57:48Speaker 12: early watch the you know the frisbee dogs are out
- 57:50Speaker 12: there practicing the cheerleaders are there there was bands back
- 57:53Speaker 12: in the day frisbee dogs and uh and the snapper
- 57:56Speaker 12: and i just thought it was so cool he could
- 57:58Speaker 12: just like he could you know throw a perfect spiral
- 58:01Speaker 12: perfect laces every time upside down so i go home
- 58:04Speaker 12: and just try it and then come freshman football you
- 58:06Speaker 12: know who can punt who can kick, who can do this,
- 58:09Speaker 12: who can long snap. And no one raised their hand.
- 58:11Speaker 12: I was like, I think I can, you know, because
- 58:12Speaker 12: I've been messing around at home. And, you know, I
- 58:15Speaker 12: did it one hand at the moment and then brought
- 58:18Speaker 12: my second hand in and just got better and better
- 58:19Speaker 12: and better. But it was never I was raised to
- 58:22Speaker 12: be a long snapper as athletes are these days. They
- 58:25Speaker 12: kind of see this, oh, that's the alleged easiest position
- 58:29Speaker 12: or easiest path to college, which it's not. I mean,
- 58:31Speaker 12: there's only 32 of you in the NFL. It's not,
- 58:34Speaker 12: you know, they don't keep multiple snappers. So the numbers
- 58:37Speaker 12: are short, but I just did it to help the team.
- 58:40Speaker 4: And so that's what I.
- 58:41Speaker 12: Preach to my players that I coach these days and mentors.
- 58:45Speaker 12: Do something at every position. Learn multiple positions because you
- 58:48Speaker 12: never know what's going to rise above and where you're
- 58:49Speaker 12: going to be needed.
- 58:50Speaker 13: But you perfected it. I mean, to throw a ball
- 58:54Speaker 13: off the goalpost. And I used to watch your practices
- 58:58Speaker 13: hit the bottom of the goalpost consistently.
- 59:01Speaker 3: What is the specialty?
- 59:03Speaker 13: What's the technique that makes it so difficult for people
- 59:07Speaker 13: to do? And you were so good at it.
- 59:09Speaker 2: Well.
- 59:10Speaker 12: There's a lot of elements to it, which is hand placement,
- 59:14Speaker 12: wrist follow-through, feet placement, the height of your butt for
- 59:20Speaker 12: the trajectory of it, the elements, the situation, the way
- 59:25Speaker 12: the ball feels in your hand.
- 59:26Speaker 4: Is it wet?
- 59:26Speaker 3: Is it sticky?
- 59:27Speaker 2: Is it tacky?
- 59:28Speaker 12: All these things. But it really comes down to just
- 59:31Speaker 12: Practicing it, you know, there's no secret pill secret sauce.
- 59:34Speaker 12: You can take that says, oh, I'm just gonna make
- 59:36Speaker 12: a you know, a good snapper We were very, you know,
- 59:39Speaker 12: when Brad Seeley myself Adam Ken Walters, we would sit
- 59:42Speaker 12: in a room and just self-review ourselves You know, he'd
- 59:44Speaker 12: have a camera on the side of us in front
- 59:46Speaker 12: of us just in our individual drills and so if
- 59:48Speaker 12: it was a little bit left and I knew how
- 59:51Speaker 12: to correct it, you know, real time underneath my legs. And,
- 59:55Speaker 12: you know, it was repetition, repetition, repetition for me.
- 59:57Speaker 9: You mentioned, you know, Adam and Kenny. Are you guys
- 1:00:00Speaker 9: kind of like a law firm together? Adam, of course, understandably,
- 1:00:03Speaker 9: he gets all the credit.
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: He's the kicker.
- 1:00:05Speaker 9: He's the guy that's going into Canton. went into Canada,
- 1:00:07Speaker 9: the hall of fame, but you guys are like literally
- 1:00:10Speaker 9: attached at the hip and are bond. Those are bonds
- 1:00:12Speaker 9: that I would assume can never be broken.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:00:15Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:00:15Speaker 12: I mean, we, you know, I was kind of said
- 1:00:17Speaker 12: that Ken and the holder after him, Josh Miller, they
- 1:00:19Speaker 12: were kind of like my mojo. Like I had this
- 1:00:22Speaker 12: little connection with them, you know, and then same for
- 1:00:25Speaker 12: them with Adam, just know the placement of the ball,
- 1:00:28Speaker 12: know how he was going to hold it, tilt it, um,
- 1:00:30Speaker 12: know when he was ready, knew when he needed, you know,
- 1:00:32Speaker 12: to just take a break, stop kicking. But yeah, we
- 1:00:34Speaker 12: work so well together. All three of us, we know what,
- 1:00:37Speaker 12: When old Foxborough was here, we'd have to drive the truck.
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: First two years.
- 1:00:41Speaker 12: Yeah, we'd have to drive the truck, you know, snowstorm,
- 1:00:43Speaker 12: drive the truck to the bubble. And, you know, we'd
- 1:00:46Speaker 12: jam music and we'd do donuts in the parking lot.
- 1:00:48Speaker 12: We'd go out afterwards and just really good friendships and
- 1:00:52Speaker 12: bonds that we've built. And, you know, of course, Adam
- 1:00:54Speaker 12: gets all the love. But I was still a little
- 1:00:58Speaker 12: disappointed when he said, you know, Pat McAfee's the only
- 1:01:01Speaker 12: one who touched his balls.
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: At the Hall of Fame.
- 1:01:03Speaker 12: I said, Adam, I've been touching those balls way before
- 1:01:06Speaker 12: any of those guys.
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: You're a good ball handler. That's right.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: And now, great moments in.
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: History.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: And Steve wants to know, why, Eric, do you hate emailers?
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: Why does he hate everybody?
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: He's very angry today, too. I hate bad emailers.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: See?
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: He doesn't like the weather.
- 1:01:26Speaker 8: Yep.
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: See?
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: It's raining.
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: Raining makes Eric a sad boy.
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: I have to admit. The fact that I had to
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: put jeans on this morning really got me mad.
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: Yep. It's like August, and I'm wearing long pants, staring
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: at the khaki shorts. Sorry, guys. It's not today.
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: It's a good thing I wore them, too. It was cold.
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: And Paul wears mom jeans, by the way.
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: Well, my jeans are, like, so old. They're so old.
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: And they're so worn out. Acid-washed, ripped jeans. They're not
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: even acid-washed. They just look it.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: They're like bell bottoms. You don't have, like, a tight, like.
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: They're not bell bottoms.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: Shut up.
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: They're like bell bottoms.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: Shut up.
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: I thought he was going to wear, like, tight, tapered jeans.
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: Platform shoes.
- 1:01:59Speaker 4: That would be... No, I don't do the Euro jeans.
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: Got to crease the legs to get in. For obvious reasons.
- 1:02:04Speaker 9: That's another great moment from Patriots.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: All right, 855-PATS-500 is the hotline. Podcasts at Patriots.com is
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: the email address. Talk in Miami, whatever else is going on.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: World Series, Tampa Bay kind of came back yesterday.
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: Won a game.
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: Is that happening? Yeah. I didn't see the end of that.
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: My guess is my boy Mike's going to be a
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: little nervous today now. Oh, yeah.
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: His Brewers are up 3-1.
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: But he always thinks that the worst is coming.
- 1:02:37Speaker 13: I know.
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: He's a baby.
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: He is a baby.
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: Then the Celtics won in overtime against the feisty Brooklyn Nets.
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: The feisty, winless Brooklyn Nets.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: What do you think about this?
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: Joe Mazzulla called it a loss.
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: Tatum, Jalen Brown, Lampshops.
- 1:02:53Speaker 6: So the one thing I would say about that is
- 1:02:56Speaker 6: I think that we, as Celtics Nation— Should be the
- 1:03:01Speaker 6: bigger people in this situation.
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: And we should.
- 1:03:06Speaker 6: Stop talking about the PR team and the lamb chops
- 1:03:10Speaker 6: and all this stuff. It just if Jalen wants to
- 1:03:14Speaker 6: talk about it and kind of make himself look like
- 1:03:16Speaker 6: kind of not a great guy, then let him do that.
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: but like be above it.
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: Rise above it.
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: Tatum's playing unbelievably well other than the stinker in the opener,
- 1:03:25Speaker 6: but he's playing unbelievably well. The last couple of games
- 1:03:28Speaker 6: last night, I know it was Brooklyn, but like that
- 1:03:30Speaker 6: was like peak Jason Tatum, like 40 burger game winning
- 1:03:34Speaker 6: shot in overtime, eight assists. Like he was in complete
- 1:03:37Speaker 6: control of that game.
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: 22.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: I think it'd be, it'd be a story if Jalen
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: Brown was still on the team. He's not anymore. It's over.
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: Just let it go. I, I, So I'm with you.
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: If he was still on the team, the problem is
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: they weren't talking about it enough while he was on
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: the team. Now he's off the team.
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: So why do you think that the Celtics are talking
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: about it as much as they are?
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: Who was talking about it?
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: The broadcast.
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: Constantly.
- 1:04:03Speaker 6: Because I think that they think they're being witty. Like
- 1:04:05Speaker 6: they're in on the culture.
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: Well, that guy that does the radio, he always takes
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: whatever the story is That's against the team. And then
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: he's waiting for the gotcha.
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: Why do you think they're doing that?
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: But he does that all the time. That's his MO.
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: Drew Carter and Brian Scalabrini spent the whole broadcast.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: I didn't watch the game.
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: This is like two straight games now.
- 1:04:28Speaker 9: Really?
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: I didn't watch. It's all about making fun of Tatum's
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: PR team because that's what Brown said. He has a
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: hell of a PR team.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: I didn't see the game. I mean, I feel like
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: this is something we can... Well, they shouldn't be. No,
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: but I did. I know you did. We talked about
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: it already. And I just feel like this is something
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: that we're sort of uniquely qualified to talk about. We
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: work for a team. And I just can't ever imagine
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: the Patriots brass coming to us... and condoning that kind
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: of sophomoric behavior that you're hearing on these broadcasts.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: So you're saying that the brass told them to do this?
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: No, I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying they
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: wouldn't condone it.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: So they tell them to stop.
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: I don't think Robert and Jonathan Kraft would be very
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: happy if we were making snide comments about every perceived
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: slight that's ever come the Patriots away.
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: Well, I don't think Tatum would like it either. That's
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: what I'm saying.
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: Oh, I think Tatum's embracing it.
- 1:05:25Speaker 6: If I'm the Celtics, I'm saying to them, cut it out.
- 1:05:28Speaker 6: Like that's what I would do on multiple levels. One,
- 1:05:31Speaker 6: maybe they will after that one, it makes them look,
- 1:05:33Speaker 6: it makes the Celtics look petty and they make them
- 1:05:36Speaker 6: look small. And then I would say to like, this
- 1:05:39Speaker 6: is a guy in Jalen Brown, whose number is going
- 1:05:41Speaker 6: to be in the rafters someday for this organization. And
- 1:05:44Speaker 6: you guys are trying to make them out to be
- 1:05:46Speaker 6: a villain. Like, just, just relax. Like in this coming
- 1:05:49Speaker 6: from my like Celtics green team or fandom here, like we,
- 1:05:53Speaker 6: I love Jalen Brown. He's a great all-time Celtic. He
- 1:05:56Speaker 6: won finals MVP here. Why are we making him out
- 1:06:00Speaker 6: to be a villain here and just kicking him while
- 1:06:04Speaker 6: he's down?
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: He's not even on the team anymore.
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: Let it go.
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: It would be like when Tom Brady went to Tampa Bay.
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: Do you think Robert and Jonathan Kraft would ever come
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: to you and me, Fred, and say, you know what?
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: You guys don't know this, but he was really greedy.
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: He really wanted so much more than you guys know about.
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: And you guys need to hammer home this narrative. Do
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: you think they would ever do that to us? And
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: that's apples to apples. We're talking superstars, right? This is
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: Brown and Tatum.
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: It's a good comparison.
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: That's apples to apples. And I'm not talking about everything
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: in terms of like... I know that we have our
- 1:06:37Speaker 4: flaws too here with the Patriots. We're not perfect. We
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: do some of these things and we take missteps too.
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: I'm not saying that we're perfect, but I'm trying to use...
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: kind of a real-world comparison. Tom Brady was at the
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: top of the heap, and he left the Patriots and
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: didn't get this kind of snarky commentary from us because
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: he left. Matter of fact, Fred, you rooted for him, right?
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: Yeah, at Tampa Bay, absolutely.
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: And a lot of other people did. Mike, you didn't
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: because you were bored with 12 and 4 seasons at
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: that time. I got the message. But you did not
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: root for him because you were like, told to not
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: root for him because you work for the Patriots.
- 1:07:16Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:07:16Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:07:17Speaker 4: You know, or you decided that that's something that you
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: needed to do as a Patriots employee. No, you know
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: what I mean? Like I just, it's, it's too much
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: of it. Like you, you listen to some of these
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: local broadcasts. I, I don't know like what the reality is.
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: I think they're hoping for the WWE beef that, you know,
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: so they can talk about it, but I, you know,
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: it's not a beef if it's only one way. And
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: right now I think it's, it's over.
- 1:07:42Speaker 6: Um, But I also just think that there's a difference between,
- 1:07:47Speaker 6: you tell us this all the time, there's a difference
- 1:07:49Speaker 6: between Felger and Maz talking about the beef and the
- 1:07:53Speaker 6: media talking about the beef and the team broadcast talking
- 1:07:56Speaker 6: about the beef.
- 1:07:56Speaker 4: I'm talking about the broadcast. I know why Felger and
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: Maz are talking about it.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: I heard the clip on the radio from the radio
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: play-by-play guy who does that a lot.
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: But this one's different.
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: He does do that a lot, but this is different.
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: I like Grandy.
- 1:08:10Speaker 6: He hits the shot at the end of the game,
- 1:08:13Speaker 6: and both broadcasts to hell of a PR team.
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: Right. So that was the talking point. What are we doing?
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: What Grandy does on a regular basis is he'll take
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: a Felger and Maz take and throw that in their face.
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: This was a shot at Jalen Brown.
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: It was.
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: Not at Felger and Maz.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: That's true.
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: Like, that's what makes this different.
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: And, you know, I'm not telling you that this is
- 1:08:39Speaker 4: coming directly from the Celtics. I'm telling you, if I
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: were the Celtics, I would put an end to it.
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: Me too.
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: I wouldn't be condoning this. It's only making it look worse.
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: And I think Evan said it right. It's making the
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: team look bad.
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:51Speaker 4: Even if they don't have anything to do with, like,
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: these guys are all doing it on their own. It's
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: still making them look bad. It just is.
- 1:08:57Speaker 6: A he is an all time great Celtic no matter
- 1:09:01Speaker 6: what way it ended or you know just like with
- 1:09:04Speaker 6: Brady or Gronkowski or any of these other guys and
- 1:09:07Speaker 6: so like treat him as what he is to your
- 1:09:11Speaker 6: organization and to your team and let the players on
- 1:09:14Speaker 6: the court do the talking with their play like Tatum's
- 1:09:17Speaker 6: playing great the team is 3-1 Like four and one,
- 1:09:20Speaker 6: whatever it is. Like you don't need to like stoop
- 1:09:23Speaker 6: to this level.
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: Like should we have gone like, you know, after Gronk
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: is catching touchdowns in the Super Bowl, should we have
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: said like, Is he having fun now? Is it fun
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: for him now? Because if you remember when he left here,
- 1:09:36Speaker 4: he complained. He basically took a year off. Dark place.
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: Because he was in a dark place and wasn't enjoying
- 1:09:41Speaker 4: football anymore because he felt like the environment around here
- 1:09:45Speaker 4: was sort of sapping him of all that enthusiasm. Should
- 1:09:49Speaker 4: we have done that? Should we have mocked and ridiculed? Right.
- 1:09:52Speaker 4: Because that's what the broadcast is doing to Jalen Brown
- 1:09:54Speaker 4: right now. And I'm not a huge Jalen Brown guy.
- 1:09:56Speaker 4: You guys know that. But I don't think he deserves that.
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: No. Yeah. All right, just thought I'd bring that up
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: because it's local sports. I like it.
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: Evan and I, we had a pre-show meeting on this.
- 1:10:08Speaker 6: We're in lockstep on this one, maybe for slightly different reasons.
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: No, I think mine is because of Jalen Brown.
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, you were.
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: That is true. It is different reasons. A little slightly different.
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: I'm offended as a journalist.
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: I just came across something on Twitter. I think it's
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: really interesting. I don't want to hijack the show here,
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: but I'd like to bring it up. It's core participation
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: in select sports from ages 6 to 12.
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: These are numbers.
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: I know we talk about youth sports participation and that
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: kind of stuff. I thought, Fred, tough for you. They
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: say this is over a six-year change of, again, six
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: to 12-year-old. Tackle football is down 6.9%. Flag football is
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: up 25%. Wrestling, Fred, down 42.9%. Lacrosse also down 30%.
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:10:48Speaker 3: So participation way down in those sports. Hockey down 16.5%.
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: The biggest....
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: Growth sports, above even flag football.
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: Golf at 55%.
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: Tennis, 72.1%. What an unbelievable... Wow.
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: What an unbelievable smear campaign that this country has done
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: against contact sports.
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely.
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: It's unreal.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: That could be the trend.
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: Cheerleading's down to $ 2.
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: 60.
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: You know, and it's interesting. You did that.
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: Cheerleading, underrated, rampant concussions in cheerleading. Really?
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: That's interesting.
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: I've gone to a couple of high school football games
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: this year. I felt like there were more cheerleaders. And
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: that's just from the fights.
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: But just the other day, it's funny that you bring
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: that up because I'm like a tackle football advocate. I'm
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: with Paul. I think it's gotten a really bad PR.
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: The NFL hasn't really helped because they've kind of shied
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: away from promoting youth tackle football. So I just typed
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: in because now that we have AI, it's not like
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: 10 years ago when you typed in a question to
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: Google or whatever. Now you're getting... More advanced answers. So
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: I said, is flag football a gateway sport to tackle football?
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: It's a gateway drug.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: And it said no.
- 1:12:09Speaker 10: No.
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: It said, you know, the trends have shown that it
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: is not. So do it yourself if you don't believe me.
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: Type that in and see what it says. It hasn't
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: translated to more kids playing. It's now recognized as a
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: standalone sport. It's its own sport. It's not a pathway
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: to tackle football. And that's a problem. It's a problem,
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: but I'm really surprised. Like lacrosse down 30 something percent.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: I just went, I'm really surprised.
- 1:12:38Speaker 4: What was hockey's number?
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: Hockey was down 16.7%.
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: I'm not saying it's just a campaign against football. It's
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: contact sports.
- 1:12:45Speaker 6: Is this the entire country?
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: Uh, this is, um, let me read like a poll.
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: This is, this is a New York sports data from,
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: this is from the Aspen Institute of sports and society. Um,
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: Doesn't exactly say what the sample was.
- 1:12:59Speaker 6: My whole thing with tackle football is like, they're still
- 1:13:02Speaker 6: playing tackle football in Texas. They're still playing tackle football
- 1:13:05Speaker 6: in Florida.
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: That's not enough, Evan.
- 1:13:08Speaker 6: Fred, that's where all the good players are coming from.
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: It's not sustainable is what I'm saying. The level of
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: the talent pool is going to go down.
- 1:13:18Speaker 6: Are they playing tackle football in the South? Are they
- 1:13:20Speaker 6: playing tackle football in Texas? Are they playing tackle football
- 1:13:23Speaker 6: in Ohio and those regions that are big tackle football regions?
- 1:13:27Speaker 6: This is where the league is. All the NFL players
- 1:13:29Speaker 6: are all from these hotbeds. Like all the best talent.
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: But there aren't enough of them, is what I'm saying.
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: Maybe not, but like.
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: And football's not down as much as those other sports,
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: which I was kind.
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: Of surprised at. Down from where? The bar might be lower.
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: Well, it's only 6%.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: I mean, it's percentages.
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: But since when? If you do it from like 1990s,
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: it's probably down 50%.
- 1:13:50Speaker 6: But like, no disrespect, but like, if the participation is
- 1:13:54Speaker 6: down in Massachusetts high school football.
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: it's really not.
- 1:13:58Speaker 6: Going to impact the NFL.
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: Yeah, but this is a national poll.
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: Multiply that by all the other regions, Devin.
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: But I'm talking... Yeah, it's a national survey. Right, but
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: that's what I'm saying, is that it's not.
- 1:14:08Speaker 6: Go ask what the participation is in tackle football and
- 1:14:11Speaker 6: the hotbeds of football.
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: And that's probably never going to go away, but what
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: I'm saying is it's not enough to grow the sport.
- 1:14:17Speaker 6: Where Will Campbell grew up in Louisiana, they're playing plenty.
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: Of tackle football. You're not.
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: I hear what you're saying, but you're not hearing what
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: I'm saying.
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: I hear what you're saying.
- 1:14:27Speaker 6: I just like, don't really think that like these places,
- 1:14:30Speaker 6: like it might be throwing volume, but it's not throwing
- 1:14:33Speaker 6: volume of players that are of the caliber that are
- 1:14:35Speaker 6: D one.
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: And it's going, it's going to take time, but it's
- 1:14:39Speaker 4: Fred's right. It's going to take time, but it's going
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: to have an impact at some point. Probably not in
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: our lifetimes. There'll be plenty of talent to go around.
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: It's going to trickle to colleges. Less and less colleges
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: will start dropping.
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: I think Alabama and LSU and Texas.
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: You always go to the extreme.
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: Because those are the teams.
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: That they're feeding to the NFL.
- 1:15:00Speaker 4: They're already losing programs.
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: I know they are.
- 1:15:02Speaker 4: Left and right.
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: I know they are.
- 1:15:04Speaker 6: Sorry, Bemidji State doesn't have a football team anymore. That
- 1:15:07Speaker 6: was no disrespect to Bemidji State.
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: Well, what if Wyoming doesn't?
- 1:15:12Speaker 4: You're looking at this on a different level.
- 1:15:16Speaker 6: Okay, so the one guy that gets drafted from Wyoming
- 1:15:19Speaker 6: a year, they'll have to.
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: Send him to Texas. That's what I'm saying. You're not
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: looking at it in, I don't think, the proper lens.
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: It's chipping away. It's eroding. And that would put sort
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: of the whole scope of college athletics is going to
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: make it harder for teams to continue to do this.
- 1:15:37Speaker 4: Because if you're in a group of six school and
- 1:15:41Speaker 4: you're going to get 10 years down the road from this,
- 1:15:43Speaker 4: and you're going to throw money away like this, cause
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: you're not gonna be able to make money.
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:15:47Speaker 4: If you're not one of those, if you're not in
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: the sec or the big 10, you're going to have
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: a hard time into a lesser extent, the big 12,
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: but those schools are going to start to go away.
- 1:15:58Speaker 3: Now it's going to be fine for the Alabamas.
- 1:16:01Speaker 8: Sure.
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: Sure. In the Texas's in those blue bloods, it will
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: always be able to thrive, but there's going to be
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: less options for for those other schools, which provide opportunities
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: for other players who, yeah, maybe Wyoming only has one of,
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: but the group of six might have. I don't know,
- 1:16:19Speaker 4: 50 guys that are draftable.
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: And then if you're a kid trying to decide what
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: path you want to take, like, it becomes less viable.
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: I hear what you guys are saying.
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: The 1AA programs are shuddering left and right.
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:16:29Speaker 4: Because you can't make money at the 1AA level.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:16:32Speaker 6: I just don't... I don't expect this to be a
- 1:16:35Speaker 6: problem anytime soon.
- 1:16:37Speaker 3: Like, I think that.
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: No, it might not be soon.
- 1:16:38Speaker 6: The college game is still.
- 1:16:39Speaker 4: Defines soon.
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: In my lifetime.
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: It might, yeah. It might not be soon, but it's coming.
- 1:16:44Speaker 4: If it doesn't change. If something doesn't change. Because I
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: think the... The root of the problem is they've convinced
- 1:16:52Speaker 4: parents of this generation that it's negligent to allow your
- 1:16:56Speaker 4: kid to play a contact sport, specifically football.
- 1:16:59Speaker 9: Yep.
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: And that's like, why is golf up so much? Why
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: is tennis up so much? Not a lot of concussions
- 1:17:04Speaker 4: in those sports.
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: I think you're right. I'd also point to how youth
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: sports is just an absolute nightmare right now. And it's
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: expensive and hockey, not saying it's, I mean, concussions aren't
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: a huge deal in hockey, but that to me is
- 1:17:16Speaker 3: a bigger barrier is the, of all these sports leagues.
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: I agree.
- 1:17:20Speaker 3: There's so much done on that.
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: I agree.
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: There are no sports in this country more expensive than
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: golf and tennis. If you want to be a good golfer,
- 1:17:29Speaker 4: do you know what kind of money you've.
- 1:17:30Speaker 12: Got to have?
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: All the kids that play tennis and golf have no
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: problem with money.
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: Go to a local country club and ask them what
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: the fee is.
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: I'd be interested in what the numbers are, but it's
- 1:17:44Speaker 3: unfortunate to me because that to me is a barrier
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: that exceeds just parents being overprotective of their kids.
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: It doesn't help.
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: I'm not dismissing that as an issue. That's an enormous issue.
- 1:17:57Speaker 4: Like the travel hockey teams, the travel soccer programs that
- 1:18:02Speaker 4: cost thousands of dollars. It costs tens of thousands of dollars.
- 1:18:07Speaker 4: to belong to the clubs to golf and play tennis.
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: It's not even close.
- 1:18:12Speaker 10: Warwick Country Club has a $ 35, 000 initiation fee and then.
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: $ 12, 000 a year. And that's in Warwick.
- 1:18:19Speaker 4: And if you have aspirations... You need a gun to
- 1:18:22Speaker 4: run around there. Let's say you're a really good golfer
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: and you have aspirations to try to get in the
- 1:18:27Speaker 4: junior circuit. You're not doing that by playing King Rail
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: in Linfield behind Market Square with Don Maxson and myself.
- 1:18:36Speaker 4: our illustrious producer of Patriots on TV.
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: But hasn't there always been a high bar on those
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: sports of like, I mean, look, I grew up around
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: a lot of tennis and it's a lot of rich
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: people who play tennis and then their kids play tennis.
- 1:18:45Speaker 4: But now you're telling me it's up 60%. So it's
- 1:18:48Speaker 4: not just rich people playing anymore. It's people trying to
- 1:18:50Speaker 4: keep their parents safe.
- 1:18:51Speaker 3: Rich people are doing pretty well right now, generally.
- 1:18:54Speaker 5: Well, I think the USDA is trying to increase programs
- 1:19:00Speaker 5: in areas that weren't traditionally places where tennis players came in.
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: And they're doing a good job at that. But... The
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: point is they're making it so that it is an
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: alternative for parents to say, hey, play tennis. We've got
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: a program right here. There's an after-school program, whatever.
- 1:19:18Speaker 4: Yeah, and for every Venus and Serena that did it
- 1:19:22Speaker 4: that way. I mean, that's, you don't want to, you
- 1:19:26Speaker 4: want to know why that's such an amazing story because
- 1:19:28Speaker 4: of the way it happened.
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: Oh, sure.
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: It's not just because Serena ended up being the greatest
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: women's tennis player of all time. Venus was first. It's
- 1:19:35Speaker 4: because of where they came from that made the story
- 1:19:38Speaker 4: so compelling. Yeah.
- 1:19:38Speaker 3: And that was when I was, uh, you know, doing
- 1:19:40Speaker 3: a little internships at Reebok when my dad was there
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: and Venus was one of the first, you know, they
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: signed her. And so I remember all the stories going
- 1:19:46Speaker 3: out with her dad when she was the prodigy. No
- 1:19:48Speaker 3: one even knew who Serena was yet. Um, But I
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: also heard a friend of mine who has a daughter
- 1:19:53Speaker 3: who golfs, and she said that that's the easiest scholarship
- 1:19:55Speaker 3: for girls to get is a female golf scholarship, that
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: they are just sitting out there. And if you know
- 1:20:00Speaker 3: how to hit the ball down the fairway, you could
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: get a scholarship. I guess just what bugs me is
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: just that the way that you're killing the opportunity to
- 1:20:08Speaker 3: try sports, whatever it is.
- 1:20:09Speaker 4: And, you know, I just.
- 1:20:10Speaker 3: Feel so bad for like, you know, a kid like
- 1:20:12Speaker 3: my son who we grew up in California, really hard
- 1:20:15Speaker 3: to get into hockey. I loved hockey. He's eight years old.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: It's too late.
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: It's too late. There's no program to just get kids together,
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: play sports, have fun. And that's, you know, part of
- 1:20:23Speaker 3: the reason why I mostly just did. town sports for
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: my kids we're not we're not chasing the travel stuff
- 1:20:28Speaker 3: and all that you know and now you hear about
- 1:20:30Speaker 3: oh well you got to subscribe to this video service
- 1:20:32Speaker 3: if you want to get a video you know like
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: all those things are you know i hear what you
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: guys are saying about.
- 1:20:36Speaker 4: No you're a thousand percent right everything you're.
- 1:20:38Speaker 3: Saying barriers that you're just putting up and it's just
- 1:20:40Speaker 3: like kids just want to play sports and have fun
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: with their friends and learn how to enjoy winning and
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: learn and to me learn how to lose like that's
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: what i always said to my kids play sports to
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: learn how to lose because that's life. Like you got
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: to learn. I poured everything I had into this week.
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: It didn't go my way. I got to pick myself
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: up and do it again next week. That to me
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: is life, not winning championships.
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: When I was growing up in New Jersey, pick a
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: sport and there was a way to play it. I mean,
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: Pop Warner was very competitive, but beyond Pop Warner, every
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: town had a town football team. Yeah. Think about it.
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: And they were all, and they were tough to get
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: on those teams. There was soccer leagues that started up in,
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: you know, name the sport and kids were playing and
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: there was avenues for kids to play. It's not the
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: way it is anymore. And I'm talking about like for
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: minimal amount of money. Yeah.
- 1:21:28Speaker 4: I mean, you're the, by far the youngest member of
- 1:21:30Speaker 4: this show.
- 1:21:31Speaker 3: I like to remind myself of that.
- 1:21:32Speaker 4: Right? By about 20 years. Did you, like, did you
- 1:21:36Speaker 4: play a lot of sports?
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:21:37Speaker 4: Like non?
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:21:39Speaker 4: Yes. Just like went to the park and played a
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: pickup basketball game.
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:21:43Speaker 6: But like, I would say my generation was the last one.
- 1:21:46Speaker 4: Yeah. I'm just curious what the cutoff was.
- 1:21:50Speaker 6: Once I started to get to middle school and high school, AAU,
- 1:21:55Speaker 6: Club Lacrosse, those things were already prevalent.
- 1:22:00Speaker 4: That was already starting.
- 1:22:01Speaker 3: If you weren't.
- 1:22:05Speaker 6: It was considered at least when I was really into
- 1:22:08Speaker 6: lacrosse in high school, like if you weren't playing on
- 1:22:10Speaker 6: a club team in the off season, you were going
- 1:22:13Speaker 6: to fall behind the kids that were playing on a
- 1:22:15Speaker 6: club team. So I played for mass elite. I joined
- 1:22:17Speaker 6: a club team. And so then in the summertime, I
- 1:22:20Speaker 6: was playing for massively in the fall. I was playing
- 1:22:22Speaker 6: for massively in the spring. I was playing for need of,
- 1:22:25Speaker 6: and it was just, All year. I was playing lacrosse
- 1:22:30Speaker 6: all year long. Even in the wintertime, we'd play indoor
- 1:22:32Speaker 6: because it was too cold to play outside. So we'd
- 1:22:34Speaker 6: play indoor lacrosse. And it was just constant, constant. But
- 1:22:37Speaker 6: it wasn't like... we're just going to go and like
- 1:22:40Speaker 6: play wall ball at like down the street at school.
- 1:22:43Speaker 6: It was like, no, you have like a tournament this weekend.
- 1:22:47Speaker 6: And my dad and I are driving two hours to
- 1:22:50Speaker 6: go to some like place in Connecticut for me to
- 1:22:53Speaker 6: play a lacrosse tournament in a random Saturday or Sunday. Uh,
- 1:22:57Speaker 6: you know, same with basketball. So like it just, that
- 1:23:01Speaker 6: is definitely true. Like I would say by the time
- 1:23:03Speaker 6: I was like 12 or 13 years old, that pendulum
- 1:23:06Speaker 6: started to flip when I was a kid, kid, I played, like,
- 1:23:11Speaker 6: recreationally constantly with my neighbors and stuff like that. But
- 1:23:15Speaker 6: then once we got older, it started to get serious.
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: Justin says, Evan, you're missing the point. I know you're
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: a smart guy.
- 1:23:21Speaker 3: I'm shocked you're reading this email.
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: I know you're a smart guy, and I understand what
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: you're saying.
- 1:23:25Speaker 3: Maybe we should read some emails that are about you.
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: But we can't just rely on South football. Football shouldn't
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: have to rely on five to eight states to keep
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: contact football alive. If the programs die, then the product decreases.
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: If the product decreases, then the money dwindles. There's a
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: serious problem across the board for youth sports, and it's
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: not going to stay alive because of a few states.
- 1:23:45Speaker 6: I didn't say just the South. I didn't say just
- 1:23:47Speaker 6: a few states. I said the hotbeds of football.
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: Right, which are a handful of states.
- 1:23:51Speaker 6: Just like any other sport, like the hotbeds of hockey
- 1:23:54Speaker 6: in Minnesota and the cold weather in Massachusetts.
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: But that's why hockey's kind of in trouble. It's a
- 1:24:02Speaker 4: niche sport.
- 1:24:03Speaker 6: But I'm just saying, well, hockey's always been a little
- 1:24:05Speaker 6: bit more niche than football. But the point I'm making is...
- 1:24:09Speaker 6: If you look at Team USA in the Olympics for hockey,
- 1:24:13Speaker 6: all those guys are from Minnesota and Massachusetts.
- 1:24:16Speaker 3: Which is not with the Minnesota?
- 1:24:17Speaker 4: Massachusetts. Massachusetts.
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:24:19Speaker 6: I think Austin Matthews is from Phoenix. He's like the
- 1:24:22Speaker 6: only one, and it's so weird. It's like, wait, where
- 1:24:24Speaker 6: is he from?
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: And that's why the NHL has to get a lot of...
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: talent from overseas.
- 1:24:30Speaker 6: Okay but my point being is is that yes i
- 1:24:33Speaker 6: agree that at the youth level this is a problem
- 1:24:35Speaker 6: i agree that maybe at the high school level this
- 1:24:37Speaker 6: is a problem but when you start to trickle up
- 1:24:39Speaker 6: to the professionals and the best of the best i
- 1:24:43Speaker 6: still think we have plenty of talent and i think.
- 1:24:45Speaker 4: We will i think today we do but i think
- 1:24:47Speaker 4: potentially you won't and i also say right so like
- 1:24:51Speaker 4: with hockey okay so what are the hotbeds mike.
- 1:24:53Speaker 3: Massachusetts and also like Minnesota.
- 1:24:56Speaker 4: Sorry, I can't comment. I can't comment on this topic
- 1:24:59Speaker 4: about Minnesota, but I can tell you there are a
- 1:25:01Speaker 4: lot of high school programs that have shuttered in Massachusetts,
- 1:25:04Speaker 4: which is a hotbed.
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: No, it's a hotbed.
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: Co-ops.
- 1:25:08Speaker 4: There's millions of co-ops and there's like a lot of
- 1:25:11Speaker 4: schools that don't have hockey.
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:25:13Speaker 4: And that is in a hotbed. So to just sit
- 1:25:17Speaker 4: there and say, well, Texas is always going to be
- 1:25:19Speaker 4: this and California is always going to be that. I
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: don't know. Well, there's another part of it too, which
- 1:25:24Speaker 4: is like, I don't know if it's always going to
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: be like that.
- 1:25:26Speaker 3: And, and, and juniors. And now you have like IMG
- 1:25:29Speaker 3: Academy and things like that for football. You know what
- 1:25:31Speaker 3: I mean? Like there's.
- 1:25:32Speaker 6: Becoming kind of concentrated at the top. This is exactly
- 1:25:35Speaker 6: how European soccer is run too. Bayern Munich does just fine.
- 1:25:39Speaker 6: Manchester United does just fine. Man City is just fine.
- 1:25:42Speaker 6: Chelsea is just fine.
- 1:25:43Speaker 4: But are they scaring the parents into not allowing them
- 1:25:46Speaker 4: to play for these junior programs because they're going to
- 1:25:48Speaker 4: get a concussion? Because I think that's a big part.
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: Of the problem.
- 1:25:50Speaker 3: I'm not saying that.
- 1:25:51Speaker 6: I'm saying that they have academies and they have, they have,
- 1:25:54Speaker 6: this is what they do. Like that's how they breed talent.
- 1:25:56Speaker 6: They're not breeding talent through their high school soccer teams.
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: No.
- 1:26:00Speaker 6: So like like that, that like IMG is getting football players.
- 1:26:04Speaker 4: People are participating. They're not participating at any level or
- 1:26:08Speaker 4: getting football. I don't know why you're fixating on just
- 1:26:11Speaker 4: like the high school levels in the in the feeder
- 1:26:13Speaker 4: programs for colleges. If the participation is down, the pool
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: is down. You don't have as many people to draw from.
- 1:26:19Speaker 3: I understand that, Paul.
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: So eventually that's going to leave a mark.
- 1:26:24Speaker 6: I understand that, but I'm just telling it doesn't matter.
- 1:26:26Speaker 4: We got to real quick. You did hijack the show,
- 1:26:29Speaker 4: but I think it's I think it's a worthwhile.
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: I'd like to read this because this is just about golf.
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: I thought it was interesting. It provides a little more
- 1:26:35Speaker 3: context than what we're talking about. But who's playing golf
- 1:26:39Speaker 3: is dramatically changing. According to PGA, girls currently represent 35
- 1:26:42Speaker 3: percent of junior golfers and minorities represent 26 percent of them.
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: That's significantly higher than 20 years ago when girls comprised
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: 15 percent. and minorities represented six. New programs are helping
- 1:26:52Speaker 3: to drive these shifting demographics. More golf courses have adjusted
- 1:26:55Speaker 3: from 18 holes to shorter rounds, recognizing that not everybody
- 1:26:58Speaker 3: wants to play for many hours. Night golf has gained
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: popularity with par-3 courses and music playing to attract younger people.
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: Putting courses have emerged for those interested in only their
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: short game, and technology has fueled interest, such as indoor
- 1:27:09Speaker 3: golf simulators, tracer technology on driving range, etc.
- 1:27:13Speaker 4: And you know what they're not getting? Browbeaten is just saying...
- 1:27:16Speaker 4: You shouldn't allow your son or daughter to golf. That's
- 1:27:20Speaker 4: bad for your daughter. Golf is also just, with the kiddos,
- 1:27:25Speaker 4: much more popular.
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: I don't know what it is.
- 1:27:28Speaker 6: A lot of the men's golfers are pretty big on
- 1:27:30Speaker 6: social media.
- 1:27:32Speaker 4: Let me read.
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: One more thing. In the last couple of years, you
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: see kids on social media. It's kind of hip or
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: cool to be involved with golf. You see a lot
- 1:27:39Speaker 3: more celebrities golfing. LeBron James has a YouTube channel where
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: he's golfing. It's a lot different than it used to be.
- 1:27:44Speaker 3: And a lot more kids want to get involved. Perfect
- 1:27:46Speaker 3: sense to me. I totally understand it now.
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: It's a beautiful game. We forgot about this guy.
- 1:27:52Speaker 4: And by the way, you're not going to get CTE
- 1:27:55Speaker 4: because that's what Good Morning America tells you every three
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: days is you're going to end up with CTE and
- 1:28:00Speaker 4: you're a bad parent if you allow your son to
- 1:28:02Speaker 4: do it or your daughter to do it.
- 1:28:03Speaker 6: I've only been playing for three months and I've already
- 1:28:05Speaker 6: watched somebody take one off the head in the bunker.
- 1:28:06Speaker 3: So you can't get CTE.
- 1:28:08Speaker 4: Well, that's what you play.
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that's because you're out there. Tony in Potten, UK.
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: Love the show. I've been listening for five seasons. While
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: I agree with Evan to a degree, the issue is
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: the NFL wants to expand and grow into new markets.
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: You can only do that with quality players. If the
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: pool is reduced or diluted in talent, the NFL can't expand.
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: If they want it, they need to put up the
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: cash to support it in schools and colleges and ensure
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: the safeguards are in place to reduce the narrative on safety.
- 1:28:38Speaker 6: I agree with some of that. This is going to
- 1:28:41Speaker 6: be maybe a little bit of an unpopular opinion. I
- 1:28:45Speaker 6: don't really care about growing the game internationally. I don't
- 1:28:48Speaker 6: really think that the goal is, okay, we're going to
- 1:28:52Speaker 6: be able to pull from these other countries across the seas.
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: It's probably down the list on the goal, but it
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: is one of the objectives.
- 1:29:00Speaker 6: I think that I understand the marketing value and the
- 1:29:03Speaker 6: financial value.
- 1:29:04Speaker 3: Look at the NHL.
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: Look at the NBA. Look at Major League Baseball, how
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: that's helped. Pulling from other markets.
- 1:29:09Speaker 6: I think the NBA has helped in certain in the
- 1:29:12Speaker 6: respect of that. They are getting like Luka Doncic and
- 1:29:15Speaker 6: Wemby level.
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: Some of their top players are from not the USA.
- 1:29:19Speaker 3: Correct.
- 1:29:19Speaker 6: But they're not. The depth of the league is still
- 1:29:21Speaker 6: all American. Yeah, you're missing the point.
- 1:29:23Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: Anyway, Jack in Ann Arbor.
- 1:29:25Speaker 3: That is literally your point.
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: Jack in Ann Arbor.
- 1:29:27Speaker 3: Like, where's the depth coming from? It's not coming from
- 1:29:29Speaker 3: Europe and the NBA.
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: Yep. But it trickles down. It's a domino effect.
- 1:29:33Speaker 3: They have like five really good talents. Jokic, Wemby, Luka
- 1:29:38Speaker 3: are from Europe.
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: And they're going to continue to grow. It's going to
- 1:29:41Speaker 2: be more and more. Maybe.
- 1:29:43Speaker 4: There's also fewer basketball players than the other sports. So
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: the talent pool doesn't need to be as big.
- 1:29:48Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: Jacket and Arbor comes from Michigan, obviously.
- 1:29:53Speaker 4: He wants some representation.
- 1:29:57Speaker 3: In high school.
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: He grew up playing hockey in Michigan. We played pickup
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: hockey at free rinks at the local park, which were
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: frozen over tennis courts without refrigeration. Those days are gone.
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: Now you can't play hockey without access to a refrigerated ice.
- 1:30:12Speaker 4: Yeah, that is true.
- 1:30:13Speaker 3: I think that's true with all sports.
- 1:30:14Speaker 4: And that's a hotbed. I think that's a big part
- 1:30:16Speaker 4: of the problem. Mike mentioned that. like good 10 minutes
- 1:30:20Speaker 4: ago now, but like kids don't play sports anymore. And
- 1:30:23Speaker 4: it's not just like, they don't play for their town teams.
- 1:30:25Speaker 4: They don't just go out and play sports.
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: Ban video games.
- 1:30:29Speaker 4: That's how you learn how to play sports.
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:30:31Speaker 4: But you gotta, you gotta do something with parents to
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: allow their kids to actually leave the house. That's been true. Like,
- 1:30:36Speaker 4: you know, that's true for every sport though.
- 1:30:39Speaker 6: Like you don't just like, play pick up basketball anymore
- 1:30:43Speaker 6: no one or like that like that sort of stuff
- 1:30:45Speaker 6: is true for all of them.
- 1:30:46Speaker 3: That was the most striking thing to me when i
- 1:30:48Speaker 3: was coaching little league a little bit was like we
- 1:30:50Speaker 3: all just knew the rules because we played in backyards
- 1:30:52Speaker 3: and like you just you just knew how to play
- 1:30:53Speaker 3: baseball you knew how to throw you knew how to
- 1:30:55Speaker 3: catch and then i got to settle league pickle and.
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: Pickle we used to play all the time when was
- 1:31:00Speaker 4: the last time you saw our kids play well my
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: kid brought it up he's like he wants to play
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: pickle and he's like what's that i'm like You play pickle.
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: It's run the bases.
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: You know what it is.
- 1:31:07Speaker 3: You played pickle. We call it pickle.
- 1:31:09Speaker 4: If you only had like three or four guys that,
- 1:31:11Speaker 4: you know, super fun offense, but that, that.
- 1:31:14Speaker 3: Was, we played flashlight. We were playing. We did a
- 1:31:16Speaker 3: lot of things.
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: But you learn.
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: How to play.
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: And that's why the skills are not there.
- 1:31:21Speaker 3: And then you get to the little league and I'm like,
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: these kids can't catch a pop fly. Like, you know,
- 1:31:24Speaker 3: it's an infield pop fly.
- 1:31:25Speaker 4: And the kid's like, I can't tell you how many eight, nine,
- 1:31:28Speaker 4: 10 year old kids that I coach that couldn't catch
- 1:31:31Speaker 4: the ball.
- 1:31:31Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:31:32Speaker 4: But meanwhile, how do you learn how to catch it?
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: I know.
- 1:31:35Speaker 3: And you play pickle, but then you see like kids
- 1:31:37Speaker 3: hockey now. And it's like these kids that do have
- 1:31:39Speaker 3: the opportunity to play on a lot of teams and
- 1:31:41Speaker 3: love it. And, and these kids are amazing. They're as
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: good as I was in college.
- 1:31:44Speaker 4: It's like squirts. You know what I mean?
- 1:31:45Speaker 3: It's like that.
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: So it's just, it's hard.
- 1:31:48Speaker 4: They weren't manning.
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: They weren't PP2.
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: Baseball was, I was not good at it.
- 1:31:54Speaker 6: So I did not play a ton of baseball growing up,
- 1:31:56Speaker 6: but like we played pick up basketball, pick up football,
- 1:31:59Speaker 6: pick up hockey.
- 1:32:00Speaker 3: We only stopped playing pick up football because we started
- 1:32:02Speaker 3: hurting each other because we were getting older.
- 1:32:05Speaker 6: And that's why we had, our parents made us stop
- 1:32:07Speaker 6: because like, one of my friends literally no that was
- 1:32:11Speaker 6: no no that was like yeah tackle football without pads
- 1:32:15Speaker 6: we need pads uh yeah like one of my friends
- 1:32:17Speaker 6: literally uh.
- 1:32:19Speaker 4: We used to play tackle football with pads on without helmets.
- 1:32:23Speaker 3: That that makes so much sense.
- 1:32:26Speaker 6: It does we were playing we were playing pickup football
- 1:32:29Speaker 6: one day at perry park across from my friend's house
- 1:32:32Speaker 6: in needham And one of my friends went low on
- 1:32:34Speaker 6: my other friend and tore his ACL, blew out his
- 1:32:37Speaker 6: knee completely.
- 1:32:38Speaker 4: Had to like, had to call an ambulance.
- 1:32:40Speaker 6: Because like there was no parents around.
- 1:32:41Speaker 4: I'm sure that happened in our games. We just didn't
- 1:32:43Speaker 4: call it an ACL. The kid just went.
- 1:32:46Speaker 6: Well, I just remember at the time, the whole thing
- 1:32:48Speaker 6: was like it. knocked him out for hockey season. He
- 1:32:51Speaker 6: was a really good hockey player. And so like, it just,
- 1:32:55Speaker 6: all of it was just, that was the end. I
- 1:32:56Speaker 6: have the same story. We were like, you know, we
- 1:32:58Speaker 6: used to go half days. We'd go to Steve Southerd's
- 1:32:59Speaker 6: backyard and play pickup football.
- 1:33:01Speaker 3: And we got to a point in eighth grade where
- 1:33:02Speaker 3: my buddy, Sean Godfrey, who ended up next year in
- 1:33:04Speaker 3: freshman full being awesome and playing varsity league. Like, we
- 1:33:07Speaker 3: threw it off, and he's like a freight train. I'm like,
- 1:33:08Speaker 3: I'm not trying to tackle this kid now. Like, he's
- 1:33:11Speaker 3: way too big and fast.
- 1:33:12Speaker 4: For the most part, when we got older, we transitioned
- 1:33:15Speaker 4: away from tackle football. But we played a lot of
- 1:33:17Speaker 4: tackle football without fans.
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:33:20Speaker 3: That was like a fullback.
- 1:33:21Speaker 4: Especially when it would snow. I mean, yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: I was constantly on the phone recruiting kids to play.
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: Love football.
- 1:33:28Speaker 4: And you'd get like six or seven kids in your neighborhood,
- 1:33:31Speaker 4: and you'd walk to Florence Street and play against the
- 1:33:33Speaker 4: Florence Street kids.
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: We're going to play you.
- 1:33:35Speaker 4: We're going to play Swan Street tomorrow. That's what we did.
- 1:33:38Speaker 4: And that's how you learn how to play. Football, basketball, hockey.
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: And when you came home with an injury, your parents
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: didn't say, I don't really want you playing that. You
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: had an injury.
- 1:33:48Speaker 6: No, but this was like the injury that happened to
- 1:33:50Speaker 6: my friend.
- 1:33:50Speaker 3: That's a little different.
- 1:33:53Speaker 4: A giant injury.
- 1:33:54Speaker 3: I'm not talking about like, oh, I got a bumper bruise.
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: No, but I broke your bones.
- 1:33:57Speaker 4: I think we broke your kid's arm.
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I broke my hand. I think we broke Farrell's arm.
- 1:34:01Speaker 4: Mark Farrell, we didn't do it on purpose.
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: I got pushed into the rose bushes. My face was
- 1:34:07Speaker 2: bloody all over.
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: I got a chipped tooth from street hockey. I got
- 1:34:11Speaker 3: a stick in the mouth. There we go.
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: Had it forever.
- 1:34:14Speaker 6: One of my friends got the basketball hoop we were
- 1:34:17Speaker 6: playing on. It was like a metal pole.
- 1:34:19Speaker 4: It was like.
- 1:34:20Speaker 6: The right face right into the metal pole.
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: I'm sure he wasn't concussed.
- 1:34:26Speaker 3: All of that.
- 1:34:27Speaker 6: And we were just like, yeah, all right.
- 1:34:30Speaker 4: You go home and take care of that. We'll keep playing.
- 1:34:32Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. The best. Good times. Just the best. 855-PASS-500.
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: I don't know what you're calling about, but John is
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: in Brighton. What's up, John?
- 1:34:41Speaker 4: Hey, guys.
- 1:34:42Speaker 3: How's it going?
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: Good.
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: I'm trying to verify this because I don't know anything
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: is true on the Internet anymore, but it looks like
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: Josh Downs has requested a trade out of Indianapolis, and
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: obviously Patriots.
- 1:34:54Speaker 4: Fans are going to be all over that one.
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: So I just kind of wanted to get your thoughts
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: on that, if that is in fact true, which it
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: looks like Jeremy Fowler reported it.
- 1:35:01Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 1:35:02Speaker 4: It is in fact true. Trade me right now. Yeah.
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: And we talked about Josh Downs. John, what would you
- 1:35:07Speaker 2: want him?
- 1:35:09Speaker 3: Sounds like it.
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: I think it's cool. Like, I mean, but it seems
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: more of, like, a fantasy trade than, like, an actual
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: NFL trade.
- 1:35:17Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: Like, what's the actual fit with Josh Downs in New
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: England other than that he played with Drake May in college?
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: Like, we have, obviously, Pop Douglas, Upton Chisholm playing the
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: slot most of the time. So, like, I don't know
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: if it's, like, a realistic thing. I don't know what, like,
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: the cost on Josh Downs would be either. Obviously, there's
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: a lot that goes into that, too. Like, if he
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: wants to not be in Indianapolis, then, like, but, you know,
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:35:40Speaker 3: I think he's a free agent, too.
- 1:35:41Speaker 4: Yeah, he's a rental.
- 1:35:42Speaker 3: Thanks, John.
- 1:35:43Speaker 4: Same draft class as Pop.
- 1:35:46Speaker 6: But, like, Josh Downs played with Drake May for one
- 1:35:48Speaker 6: year in 2023 at North Carolina. Pop Douglas has played
- 1:35:52Speaker 6: with Drake May going on three years right now. So, like,
- 1:35:55Speaker 6: that's another thing with, like, the whole college connection where
- 1:35:57Speaker 6: I'm like, well, he's played a lot more NFL football
- 1:36:01Speaker 6: with Pop Douglas at this point than he has with, like,
- 1:36:04Speaker 6: it's a connection.
- 1:36:04Speaker 4: They could make that move. I just don't really think it.
- 1:36:09Speaker 4: I don't think it impacts the team all that much.
- 1:36:13Speaker 4: I think you can make an argument he's a better
- 1:36:15Speaker 4: slot receiver than Efton Chisholm and Pop Douglas. Sure. But
- 1:36:20Speaker 4: I just don't know if that fulfills a need.
- 1:36:23Speaker 3: I might wait on that and consider it in the
- 1:36:25Speaker 3: offseason when Pop's a free agent too and weigh all
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: that and see what you like then.
- 1:36:29Speaker 4: I think it's probably unlikely just because you just kind
- 1:36:32Speaker 4: of spent an offseason devoting some pretty significant resources to
- 1:36:37Speaker 4: two wide receivers.
- 1:36:38Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:36:38Speaker 6: Yeah, that 2023 draft was Zay Flowers in the first round,
- 1:36:42Speaker 6: Josh Downs in the second or third round, and then
- 1:36:44Speaker 6: Pop on day three. And those were like that mold
- 1:36:47Speaker 6: of receiver day one, day two, day three. So is
- 1:36:50Speaker 6: it a slight upgrade going from day three Zay Flowers
- 1:36:53Speaker 6: to day two Zay Flowers? I guess, but is that
- 1:36:56Speaker 6: really moving the needle for this team?
- 1:36:58Speaker 4: I like Josh Downs, but I don't think I like
- 1:37:01Speaker 4: him enough to give up anything of significance for him.
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: Eldridge in North Carolina. What's up, Eldridge?
- 1:37:06Speaker 4: He's got about 25 catches, dude.
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: He's on the road.
- 1:37:08Speaker 10: Hey, fellas.
- 1:37:09Speaker 3: How y'all doing?
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: Hey.
- 1:37:10Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:37:10Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:37:11Speaker 10: Hey, Paul.
- 1:37:12Speaker 11: You're right, man.
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: Back in the day, we played ball no matter what.
- 1:37:15Speaker 3: Cold, wet, raining, whatever.
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: You got that right.
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: My next-door neighbor, I had to cut the field. He
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: had a big old field behind our house.
- 1:37:23Speaker 11: I had to cut it with his ride-along more, folks,
- 1:37:25Speaker 11: so we can play.
- 1:37:27Speaker 4: Shoveling off basketball courts to play.
- 1:37:30Speaker 2: Absolutely. Yep.
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: Yeah, they don't do that no more. But my question
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: is this. I know we got four receivers, but one
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: of them is on one bad leg. The other two,
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: I don't know what's up. Is they going to elevate
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: anybody else to give Brown a break if Dobbs and
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: Holland don't come back? And I'll take it off the air.
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: Okay. Huh?
- 1:37:52Speaker 13: No.
- 1:37:52Speaker 6: Like is Cameron Dorner one of those guys?
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: No.
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: Yeah, they've been pretty down. They've gone into at least
- 1:37:59Speaker 4: two games with only four receivers active, right?
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:38:03Speaker 4: If they... thought that they had a viable option on
- 1:38:07Speaker 4: the practice squad, I think one of those guys would
- 1:38:09Speaker 4: have been elevated.
- 1:38:10Speaker 6: Well, you just have to, like, think about the game
- 1:38:12Speaker 6: day roster spots and stuff, too, right? Like, it just,
- 1:38:16Speaker 6: I doubt it.
- 1:38:17Speaker 4: Like, but when they've been healthy, when the whole court,
- 1:38:20Speaker 4: they've had five active, right? You know, if Hollins and
- 1:38:23Speaker 4: Dobbs were both healthy, Chisholm probably would be inactive, but
- 1:38:29Speaker 4: they other five would be active. And they would have
- 1:38:34Speaker 4: probably a role in the game. Now, maybe Kyle Williams
- 1:38:36Speaker 4: would be inactive and they would keep Chisholm because now
- 1:38:39Speaker 4: it seems like Chisholm's been part of the run game
- 1:38:41Speaker 4: and whatnot. But if Cameron Dorner or Mike's guy... dixon
- 1:38:50Speaker 4: kyle dixon he said with not much confidence uh if
- 1:38:54Speaker 4: those guys were viable options the other kid there too
- 1:38:56Speaker 4: from elon right what's his name uh i know you're
- 1:38:59Speaker 4: oh uh uh brave boy brave brave boy i wanted
- 1:39:02Speaker 4: to say brave boy but it was so close to
- 1:39:04Speaker 4: knowing these practice it was such a goofy.
- 1:39:06Speaker 3: Last janitor i wasn't sure if it was chandler brave boy.
- 1:39:09Speaker 4: I'm so close to getting these practice squad guys but
- 1:39:12Speaker 4: if those guys were viable options i think at this
- 1:39:14Speaker 4: stage i think that Vrabel would elevate one of them,
- 1:39:18Speaker 4: even if it was just, you know, like standard elevation,
- 1:39:21Speaker 4: you know, like for a week.
- 1:39:22Speaker 3: He seems like that to give guys, you know, a
- 1:39:24Speaker 3: reward kind of thing. I felt that way with the
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: Holy Cross kid, Benton Whitley, last week, like got, you know,
- 1:39:29Speaker 3: a chance to, But.
- 1:39:30Speaker 4: He also played in special teams. That's the thing.
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: They've got to have a role.
- 1:39:34Speaker 6: When they elevate these guys, they have game day roles,
- 1:39:38Speaker 6: usually on special teams. Xavier Newman-Johnson got elevated because they
- 1:39:41Speaker 6: had no centers, so they needed a backup center.
- 1:39:44Speaker 4: That's a little bit different. That's XNJ.
- 1:39:47Speaker 6: If Cameron Dorner is elevated from the practice squad, if
- 1:39:54Speaker 6: he's not playing in the kicking game, which I, maybe
- 1:39:56Speaker 6: I don't see how he would be like, what, what's
- 1:39:59Speaker 6: the role? Like, how is he on the team? Like
- 1:40:01Speaker 6: on game day, starting X receiver.
- 1:40:03Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:40:03Speaker 4: Like, no, yeah, no, but it is. I mean, I do,
- 1:40:07Speaker 4: I do think four is sick of me. So, you know,
- 1:40:11Speaker 4: four is, four is on the edge, you know? Cause
- 1:40:13Speaker 4: now if you lose a guy, you're, you're really shorthanded now.
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:40:19Speaker 6: I mean, they do have the two tight ends, you know, like, Yeah.
- 1:40:22Speaker 6: They've had three tight ends, Henry and Raritan. And yeah,
- 1:40:25Speaker 6: three tight ends. But like those two guys, I think
- 1:40:30Speaker 6: you kind of treat them as like additional receivers in
- 1:40:32Speaker 6: a lot of ways. So like, you know, especially Raritan, um,
- 1:40:37Speaker 6: So they've gotten away with only having four. I actually
- 1:40:40Speaker 6: think you can get away with those. Like if it
- 1:40:41Speaker 6: wasn't for the fact that like, you know, all of
- 1:40:44Speaker 6: a sudden guys just start dropping like flies and you
- 1:40:46Speaker 6: have a bunch of injuries on game day at wide receiver.
- 1:40:49Speaker 6: I don't really think you need more than four on
- 1:40:51Speaker 6: a game day. Unless you have a fifth guy. That's
- 1:40:53Speaker 6: really only three play.
- 1:40:54Speaker 4: Like Kyle Williams is getting a handful of snaps in
- 1:40:57Speaker 4: these games as the fourth guy. Right.
- 1:40:58Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:40:58Speaker 4: Now, obviously he plays on special teams. He turns kicks. Yeah.
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: Thomas writes in about trades. He says, I just want
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: to kind of counter what Evan said about guys like
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: Nelson and downs. I get his points, but you'd be
- 1:41:12Speaker 2: getting these guys for the future as well. So when
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: it comes to the money, you would assume they would
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: move off from on when you, after this year, if
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: they got Nelson's at the end of the year, say
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: same set, if they get downs as pop is a
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: free agent after the season. So I get the money.
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: but I think there are moves they could make that
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: are looking to the future as well.
- 1:41:31Speaker 4: Same exact situation. Josh Downs is a free agent.
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: No, I know, but what he's saying is you re-sign
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: those guys or sign them to new contracts and get
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: rid of.
- 1:41:40Speaker 4: Why not just sign them as free agents when they're
- 1:41:42Speaker 4: available in the offseason? It doesn't give you any better
- 1:41:45Speaker 4: chance to re-sign them.
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: You don't have to give up.
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: Well, I guess when you bring them here, you negotiate
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: a new contract, right? That's what he's saying.
- 1:41:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I know, but if Quentin Nelson and Josh Downs
- 1:41:57Speaker 4: are two months away from being free agents.
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:42:00Speaker 4: Like, unless you want to blow them away, I don't
- 1:42:03Speaker 4: think they're interested in signing you.
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: You're saying they wouldn't do it.
- 1:42:06Speaker 4: I'm not saying that they wouldn't, but you'd have to
- 1:42:08Speaker 4: make it worth their while.
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:42:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:42:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:42:11Speaker 4: Interesting decision. Same situation.
- 1:42:13Speaker 6: Like, there's no difference between Pop Douglas playing in the
- 1:42:17Speaker 6: slot the rest of the season and Josh Downs playing
- 1:42:18Speaker 6: in the slot the rest of the season. They're both
- 1:42:20Speaker 6: headed towards free agency next year.
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: So... Let's see. Elle from Wisconsin has a trade idea
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: for Paul.
- 1:42:28Speaker 4: I love it.
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: Ravens give us Kyle Hamilton.
- 1:42:33Speaker 9: Nice.
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: They're on the ropes. And one more week could put
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: them out of it. The Patriots give up a 2028
- 1:42:41Speaker 2: six-round pick and a new pair of New Balance shoes.
- 1:42:44Speaker 4: I like it. And I know Elle's having fun with it.
- 1:42:47Speaker 4: Just out of curiosity, if the Patriots were to lose
- 1:42:50Speaker 4: to Miami, would they be out of it?
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:42:53Speaker 4: Because that would be the same spot that the Ravens
- 1:42:55Speaker 4: would be in if they lose to the Bills.
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:42:57Speaker 3: What was the thing about Lamar? They thought he was
- 1:42:58Speaker 3: going to play and then he didn't play?
- 1:42:59Speaker 4: I saw a little rumble. That's why I gave everybody
- 1:43:02Speaker 4: a win.
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:43:03Speaker 6: Sounds like they were a little disappointed that he wasn't
- 1:43:06Speaker 6: able to play.
- 1:43:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:43:07Speaker 6: A little sense of frustration there.
- 1:43:10Speaker 4: I did think it was interesting. They called it a
- 1:43:12Speaker 4: high ankle sprain.
- 1:43:13Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:43:13Speaker 4: And he's only missed three games.
- 1:43:15Speaker 6: There was some scuttlebutt last year about this. And his name,
- 1:43:21Speaker 6: it happened when he was in the contract negotiation, but
- 1:43:23Speaker 6: that happens. Everybody's name is in trade rumors when they're
- 1:43:26Speaker 6: in contract negotiations. But just this undercurrent of is Baltimore
- 1:43:33Speaker 6: going to hang on from Lamar Jackson for a long time?
- 1:43:36Speaker 3: I know this was out there, so I hope I'm
- 1:43:37Speaker 3: not creating something.
- 1:43:39Speaker 4: I'll say this. Along those lines, earlier in the show,
- 1:43:42Speaker 4: I talked about sometimes you listen and you listen to
- 1:43:45Speaker 4: what national guys are saying. When I talked about Greg
- 1:43:47Speaker 4: Bedard and and Albert Breer talking about just throwing random
- 1:43:51Speaker 4: names in trades. Don't always just dismiss that. This is
- 1:43:55Speaker 4: one that caught my attention. When Evan's talking about Lamar Jackson,
- 1:43:59Speaker 4: and maybe there was some disappointment that he didn't play,
- 1:44:02Speaker 4: the way Adam Schefter described this on Sunday, two different times,
- 1:44:07Speaker 4: hasn't exactly been Mr. October the last two years. He
- 1:44:10Speaker 4: missed all of October with a hamstring last year, and
- 1:44:14Speaker 4: now this is going to be the third week Hasn't
- 1:44:17Speaker 4: been Mr. October. Does that sound like an Adam Schefter
- 1:44:20Speaker 4: line or maybe something that came from like Eric DaCosta? Right.
- 1:44:24Speaker 4: A little frustrated.
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: You know? Yeah. I don't know.
- 1:44:28Speaker 4: I don't know the answer to that, but I just
- 1:44:29Speaker 4: thought like, Schefter doesn't generally, you know, wade into the, uh,
- 1:44:35Speaker 4: the personal shots.
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:44:37Speaker 4: You know, waters too often.
- 1:44:38Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:44:39Speaker 4: And that kind of, to me, was disrespectful.
- 1:44:40Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:44:41Speaker 3: And try to make it about his, like, career you
- 1:44:44Speaker 3: know like multiple seasons like did he go and do
- 1:44:47Speaker 3: research on that or I.
- 1:44:48Speaker 6: Just wouldn't be totally stunned if next offseason we get
- 1:44:52Speaker 6: we get a blockbuster Lamar Jackson trade like I'm not
- 1:44:55Speaker 6: saying it's a high percentage chance but I just wouldn't
- 1:44:57Speaker 6: be totally.
- 1:44:58Speaker 4: Especially if they end up falling short again like no
- 1:45:00Speaker 4: I'm not talking about not winning the Super Bowl I'm
- 1:45:02Speaker 4: talking about falling not making the playoffs again you can
- 1:45:05Speaker 4: look back and say well they would have made the
- 1:45:06Speaker 4: playoffs had he played 17 games but they finished a
- 1:45:10Speaker 4: game back at the playoffs like they did last year
- 1:45:12Speaker 4: and he missed three games and We just can't rely
- 1:45:15Speaker 4: on him. What about Herbo? Jay Herbo? I think Herbo
- 1:45:18Speaker 4: is going to stay and be the carrot to get
- 1:45:21Speaker 4: somebody to come in.
- 1:45:22Speaker 6: I think that's one more coach.
- 1:45:24Speaker 3: He's too talented.
- 1:45:25Speaker 4: And I think that also gives you the opportunity for
- 1:45:27Speaker 4: the new coach to come in and say, well, I
- 1:45:29Speaker 4: have this top three pick and I don't have to
- 1:45:32Speaker 4: use it on a guy that I have no idea
- 1:45:34Speaker 4: if he's going to pan out in the NFL. I
- 1:45:35Speaker 4: can take Jeremiah Smith. Or I can take you know, whoever,
- 1:45:39Speaker 4: the best player available.
- 1:45:40Speaker 3: It's such a hard position to be in when you
- 1:45:42Speaker 3: like your quarterback, but he just can't get you there.
- 1:45:44Speaker 3: I mean, maybe like Phillip Rivers is a good example.
- 1:45:46Speaker 3: I mean, I know he's stuck, unfortunately, behind Brady Manning. But,
- 1:45:49Speaker 3: you know, you have the guy, you love the guy,
- 1:45:51Speaker 3: you think he's the guy, but he just, you know,
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: for whatever reason, circumstance. Yeah, he didn't win a Super Bowl,
- 1:45:55Speaker 3: but he was good.
- 1:45:56Speaker 4: He was good enough to win.
- 1:45:58Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, you look at
- 1:45:59Speaker 3: your career and you're like, shoot, he didn't even make
- 1:46:01Speaker 3: it to a Super Bowl.
- 1:46:02Speaker 4: That's why I hate that we totally just judge all
- 1:46:05Speaker 4: these guys on.
- 1:46:06Speaker 7: rings.
- 1:46:06Speaker 6: Well, that's why I feel like this, uh, post Brady
- 1:46:09Speaker 6: era has given me an appreciation for those types of
- 1:46:12Speaker 6: guys where it's like, our standard was so high.
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: And all we knew was Superbowl.
- 1:46:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: And winning.
- 1:46:18Speaker 6: And like, turns out that like pretty, pretty good. If
- 1:46:21Speaker 6: you told me that, that Drake Mays career, I hope
- 1:46:24Speaker 6: he wins the Superbowl. But if you told me that
- 1:46:25Speaker 6: Drake Mays career is, is Phillip.
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: Rivers, his career, like, I'd be like, well, it's interesting
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: that you say that because, uh, David and South Carolina wrote, uh, in, uh,
- 1:46:36Speaker 2: It's the subject is Tom Brady ruined football. And he
- 1:46:40Speaker 2: says he's got a short version and a long version.
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: I don't hate the premise. I'll do the short version.
- 1:46:45Speaker 2: And if you guys don't get it, then.
- 1:46:47Speaker 4: I get the idea of what he's what he's probably saying.
- 1:46:49Speaker 2: He says, do you think that Brady's dominance and straight
- 1:46:51Speaker 2: up unnatural postseason success makes us judge some of the
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: most talented quarterbacks of today's game too harshly for not
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: having a ring? For example, Allen and Lamar both have
- 1:47:03Speaker 2: been so close to making it to the big game,
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: but because of some unlucky plays or calls, they have
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: this narrative of not being able to win a ring.
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: And then he's got a whole thing backing this up.
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: But you get the gist of it.
- 1:47:16Speaker 4: Look what the narrative was on Peyton Manning. Choker.
- 1:47:19Speaker 3: Couldn't do it until he did it.
- 1:47:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:47:21Speaker 4: But because of Brady.
- 1:47:23Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:47:23Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:47:24Speaker 4: Brady was so good and just won every time.
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: He was a regular season guy, dome player. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:47:31Speaker 3: I guess my perspective is, like, more from not the
- 1:47:34Speaker 3: fans looking at their quarterback, but the team's perspective and saying, like,
- 1:47:39Speaker 3: what do we got to do? You know, like, we
- 1:47:40Speaker 3: like the guy, but does he have, like, some kind
- 1:47:42Speaker 3: of block? Like, he just can't do it?
- 1:47:43Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 1:47:44Speaker 3: Like, you start to question yourself even though you love
- 1:47:46Speaker 3: the player.
- 1:47:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:47:47Speaker 3: Tough spot to be in.
- 1:47:48Speaker 6: I just look at it from Brady's perspective, too, of, like,
- 1:47:52Speaker 6: he was so– uh, cerebral and so mentally sharp when
- 1:47:57Speaker 6: it came to the game. And I think we hold
- 1:47:59Speaker 6: Drake May to that standard a.
- 1:48:01Speaker 4: Lot, which is kind of where I thought he was headed.
- 1:48:03Speaker 4: And I don't think that that's achievable.
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:48:06Speaker 6: I maybe in hope, like, hopefully this is a long
- 1:48:09Speaker 6: career for Drake May when he's 30, 35 and he's
- 1:48:13Speaker 6: played it for 10 plus years. Like he'll get to
- 1:48:15Speaker 6: the point where he's running the show like Brady was,
- 1:48:18Speaker 6: but Brady and Manning were unicorn by the.
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: Way manning was just as smart as brady but he
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: didn't have bill belichick.
- 1:48:24Speaker 6: He was just as smart but they they ran a
- 1:48:26Speaker 6: lot of their offense out of the same formations like
- 1:48:29Speaker 6: they their formations and their personnel groupings were nowhere near
- 1:48:33Speaker 6: as diverse as the patriots so like brady was doing
- 1:48:36Speaker 6: it with like evolving offenses every single time. Like, even, like,
- 1:48:41Speaker 6: within his career, they've evolved offenses like, you know, the
- 1:48:45Speaker 6: middle of the field with the tight ends and the
- 1:48:46Speaker 6: slot receivers to Moss with the outside receivers.
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: But you can make the argument that over the course
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: of their careers, Manning's offense, the Colts' offenses were as productive,
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: if not more productive, than the Patriots' offenses.
- 1:48:59Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, no doubt.
- 1:49:00Speaker 4: And I would make the argument that they were every
- 1:49:02Speaker 4: bit as productive head-to-head when they played in good weather or,
- 1:49:05Speaker 4: you know, in Manning's case, when he played at home
- 1:49:09Speaker 4: in the Dome. Even when the Patriots won the game,
- 1:49:12Speaker 4: it was 38-34 on a goal line stand. Those two guys,
- 1:49:16Speaker 4: their brains are unicorns.
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: That is not.
- 1:49:20Speaker 6: easy to do to be able to sit there pre-snap
- 1:49:24Speaker 6: and I think Brady talks about this all the time
- 1:49:25Speaker 6: and I laugh when I hear him talking about it
- 1:49:27Speaker 6: because I'm like dude yes for you yeah Michael Jordan
- 1:49:30Speaker 6: it's easy for you to understand like why would you
- 1:49:33Speaker 6: run that play into that front it's never gonna work.
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: He's like Ted Williams trying to teach hitting why can't
- 1:49:38Speaker 2: you do.
- 1:49:38Speaker 3: It yeah along those lines um you know that we
- 1:49:41Speaker 3: put out the Josh McDaniels mic'd up and I was
- 1:49:43Speaker 3: just what kind of impressed me was still how he's
- 1:49:45Speaker 3: kind of like You're doing good. He's kind of reassuring.
- 1:49:48Speaker 3: I don't know. It just was interesting. I didn't expect
- 1:49:52Speaker 3: Drake this year to come in and just have all
- 1:49:54Speaker 3: the answers and no, but the tone that Josh was
- 1:49:56Speaker 3: taking with him was a lot more, I don't want
- 1:49:58Speaker 3: to say hand-holding, but very supportive and you're doing a
- 1:50:01Speaker 3: good job. It was still a lot more of, I felt,
- 1:50:06Speaker 3: reassuring a young quarterback and not riding sidecar with a
- 1:50:09Speaker 3: quarterback who it's all starting to click for.
- 1:50:11Speaker 4: We're... Losing– No, I agree with you. I think we're
- 1:50:15Speaker 4: back to our generational argument. But he's still only 24.
- 1:50:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:50:19Speaker 6: And he's only made like 35 starts in the NFL.
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:50:22Speaker 6: And so I think that people just expect it to
- 1:50:25Speaker 6: go a little bit too quickly, and I think that's us.
- 1:50:27Speaker 4: I think that's a Brady– Yeah, I was– That's the
- 1:50:29Speaker 4: Brady part. I think that's a good premise on the email.
- 1:50:33Speaker 2: Yep. Vancouver, Sean, I predict about the game. The Patriots
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: will be much better at tackling than they were in Chicago.
- 1:50:40Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:50:40Speaker 2: I'm sure this is a huge emphasis in practice this week.
- 1:50:43Speaker 2: I also predict AJ Brown will have more than four catches.
- 1:50:46Speaker 2: This won't be a trap game as pointed out earlier
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: in today's show. Miami is not the terrible team. Most
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: fans thought it was prior to last week. The Patriots
- 1:50:55Speaker 2: will not take them lightly. New England needs a big win.
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: They will need the momentum and confidence for two difficult
- 1:51:01Speaker 2: NFC North games prior to the buy.
- 1:51:03Speaker 6: I do expect their tackling to be better. It's, I mean,
- 1:51:07Speaker 6: it couldn't be worse. They missed 17 tackles against Chicago,
- 1:51:11Speaker 6: but I would say like similar to Paul's whole thing
- 1:51:14Speaker 6: on this matchup, like, this is not the Chicago bears
- 1:51:17Speaker 6: skill group. This is not Luther burden and Deandre Swift
- 1:51:20Speaker 6: and Colson Loveland and Romeo dunes. And like, this is
- 1:51:23Speaker 6: a much, this might be the worst skill group in
- 1:51:26Speaker 6: football that they're facing on Sunday against Miami.
- 1:51:28Speaker 4: Malik Washington is probably their most skilled. Yeah.
- 1:51:31Speaker 6: Caleb Douglas, like on the worst play of defense you're
- 1:51:34Speaker 6: ever going to see against the jets took.
- 1:51:36Speaker 4: A half hour to school. Yeah.
- 1:51:38Speaker 6: A touchdown down the sideline and just like, you know, it,
- 1:51:43Speaker 6: comedy of errors from the Jets' defense. But other than that,
- 1:51:47Speaker 6: that's not a very high-powered offense.
- 1:51:48Speaker 4: This is a really bad team. Don't confuse it because
- 1:51:51Speaker 4: they won a game. This is a bad team. That's
- 1:51:54Speaker 4: what makes the Jets in total disarray right now. People
- 1:51:57Speaker 4: are talking about maybe Aaron Glenn doesn't make it much longer.
- 1:52:01Speaker 6: That thing is not going in a good direction.
- 1:52:03Speaker 4: No.
- 1:52:05Speaker 2: And I couldn't be happier.
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: Yikes.
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: Not for him, but for the team.
- 1:52:09Speaker 4: Losing at home to a team that basically... Stripped it bare.
- 1:52:13Speaker 3: Jets are down bad right now.
- 1:52:15Speaker 4: Do you know that Aaron Glenn's winless in the division
- 1:52:17Speaker 4: in his career?
- 1:52:18Speaker 2: 0-9.
- 1:52:19Speaker 6: Especially because they've invested in that team a little bit
- 1:52:22Speaker 6: this year.
- 1:52:23Speaker 4: They should be beyond. I've been saying it. I've been
- 1:52:25Speaker 4: making the argument for five, six weeks. There's a big
- 1:52:27Speaker 4: difference between the Jets and the Dolphins. I was wrong.
- 1:52:30Speaker 4: They're the same. Frisky no more.
- 1:52:32Speaker 2: They're the same. Sean in Toronto. I hope in Miami
- 1:52:35Speaker 2: there's no play that comes down to a close review
- 1:52:38Speaker 2: because odds are CBS will have three cameras in the
- 1:52:41Speaker 2: stadium for the broadcast. Seriously. What is with the inequality
- 1:52:45Speaker 2: in the replay system? Get ready for poor production for
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: this game. Hope it doesn't actually have an impact. So
- 1:52:52Speaker 2: I think there's a mandate that you have to have
- 1:52:55Speaker 2: a minimum amount of cameras at every game.
- 1:52:58Speaker 4: But he is right. There's... These kinds of games get
- 1:53:02Speaker 4: less than the marquee games.
- 1:53:06Speaker 6: With NFL Pro now, you can get all the different
- 1:53:11Speaker 6: camera angles that they shoot on TV.
- 1:53:15Speaker 4: The teams get this anyways.
- 1:53:17Speaker 6: But they have all the different camera angles that you
- 1:53:19Speaker 6: get on TV, and it just shows you what it's
- 1:53:22Speaker 6: shooting the entire time.
- 1:53:24Speaker 4: It doesn't move.
- 1:53:26Speaker 6: So like there's like sometimes there's like up to like
- 1:53:28Speaker 6: 18 different angles that you could look at. It's something
- 1:53:30Speaker 6: crazy like that. Teams have all this already and had
- 1:53:34Speaker 6: it have had it for years. But a lot of
- 1:53:36Speaker 6: the cut ups that they make are not all 22
- 1:53:38Speaker 6: or TV broadcast. It's like some random camera that was
- 1:53:41Speaker 6: like shooting from a certain angle that they want to
- 1:53:43Speaker 6: take from because it's useful for them in some way.
- 1:53:46Speaker 4: It's pretty cool.
- 1:53:47Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:53:49Speaker 2: Final email we'll take. This is from Danny. Coming into
- 1:53:52Speaker 2: the season, especially after the Super Bowl against the Seahawks,
- 1:53:55Speaker 2: one of my main concerns was how Drake would handle
- 1:53:57Speaker 2: the blitz and the 6-8 up at the line. What
- 1:54:02Speaker 2: is our confidence in Drake with handling those kind of
- 1:54:04Speaker 2: pressure looks now? Not including the O-line, what is our
- 1:54:07Speaker 2: confidence in Drake handling it? I believe he's gotten so
- 1:54:10Speaker 2: much better, and he has taken control of the protections,
- 1:54:13Speaker 2: and if we face the Seahawks or Bears again, or
- 1:54:16Speaker 2: even when we face the Vikings, he'll handle the blitz
- 1:54:19Speaker 2: as good. I don't know about the O-line, but I
- 1:54:22Speaker 2: think Drake will be better.
- 1:54:24Speaker 6: It's probably a longer-winded question for the end of the show,
- 1:54:28Speaker 6: but I think that they've had some cool wrinkles in
- 1:54:31Speaker 6: terms of protection. To me, like you say, Drake handling
- 1:54:34Speaker 6: the blitz better, he needs to have answers to handle
- 1:54:36Speaker 6: the blitz better. I think that goes hand-in-hand with the
- 1:54:39Speaker 6: offensive coordinator. I put just as much responsibility on McDaniels
- 1:54:43Speaker 6: in that department as I do Drake Maye. The one
- 1:54:46Speaker 6: thing that they've done this year that I really have
- 1:54:48Speaker 6: enjoyed is the splitbacks. I think that that's a nice
- 1:54:50Speaker 6: wrinkle of a way that they can get to seven-man
- 1:54:52Speaker 6: pass protections and make sure when they overload sides that
- 1:54:56Speaker 6: they have enough blockers to the left and right of
- 1:54:58Speaker 6: Drake May and send three guys into the route, block
- 1:55:01Speaker 6: with seven, and let him... throw against single coverage on
- 1:55:04Speaker 6: the outside, but it could improve. Certainly wasn't great early
- 1:55:09Speaker 6: on in that game. On Thursday night, they got him
- 1:55:11Speaker 6: on the first two drives of the game, but I
- 1:55:13Speaker 6: think that they have some things that are a little
- 1:55:15Speaker 6: bit unique in what they're doing that makes me feel
- 1:55:19Speaker 6: cautiously optimistic, but I would say it's still a little
- 1:55:22Speaker 6: bit of a work in progress.
- 1:55:22Speaker 4: I think physically he's handled it better than he did
- 1:55:25Speaker 4: in that Super Bowl, but yeah, it gets there. I mean,
- 1:55:28Speaker 4: the pressure has been, I thought he did a great
- 1:55:31Speaker 4: job of, Making runaway guys miss. I think Evan did
- 1:55:34Speaker 4: a good job of explaining some of the protections that
- 1:55:37Speaker 4: he set. So he sort of identifies where knowing where
- 1:55:40Speaker 4: it's going to come from before it gets there, which
- 1:55:42Speaker 4: allows him. To make a guy miss? I think physically
- 1:55:46Speaker 4: he's been better against.
- 1:55:47Speaker 3: What did he get wrong on that first fourth down
- 1:55:48Speaker 3: when they got him with the nickel blitz?
- 1:55:50Speaker 4: So, I mean, it depends. Like, you know, this is
- 1:55:53Speaker 4: always like a philosophical thing.
- 1:55:55Speaker 6: Like, do we want to block it or do we
- 1:55:56Speaker 6: want to throw hot against it?
- 1:55:58Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:55:58Speaker 6: Like, so you can have different ways to answer these problems.
- 1:56:01Speaker 4: You just have to have an answer.
- 1:56:02Speaker 3: What about neither?
- 1:56:02Speaker 4: And you have to have an answer together. Right?
- 1:56:04Speaker 6: Like, it's not good enough just for the quarterback to
- 1:56:07Speaker 6: know what the answer is. It's all 11 guys got
- 1:56:09Speaker 6: to know. So, like, when the left-hand side comes through
- 1:56:11Speaker 6: and he's unblocked and he's free.
- 1:56:13Speaker 3: Like, does A.J.
- 1:56:14Speaker 6: Brown have an option to cut his route off and
- 1:56:16Speaker 6: site adjust his route to the to the blitz to
- 1:56:18Speaker 6: be an answer to Drake May? And that particular play,
- 1:56:21Speaker 6: he kept running down the field. Now, I'm not saying
- 1:56:23Speaker 6: that he's wrong because maybe that's just his route and
- 1:56:25Speaker 6: he's not wrong. But there is no answer there in
- 1:56:28Speaker 6: that instance.
- 1:56:29Speaker 3: So like.
- 1:56:30Speaker 6: Then they got into some of the splitback stuff, and
- 1:56:32Speaker 6: now they have, okay, well, if you're going to send
- 1:56:34Speaker 6: a four here, we're going to slide this way, and
- 1:56:36Speaker 6: we have this way and that way, and all.
- 1:56:38Speaker 4: That kind of stuff.
- 1:56:39Speaker 6: But early on in the game, they weren't ready for
- 1:56:43Speaker 6: it yet. So to me, that's not just a Drake
- 1:56:47Speaker 6: May issue.
- 1:56:49Speaker 3: That doesn't just fall on him.
- 1:56:50Speaker 4: That's just part of the.
- 1:56:51Speaker 3: Question, and again, we kind of had our quasi-debate about
- 1:56:55Speaker 3: fourth downs. It's like, do you... Do you take that
- 1:56:57Speaker 3: into consideration when attempting a fourth down early in the
- 1:56:59Speaker 3: game when you still don't quite have a total sense
- 1:57:01Speaker 3: of what their attack game plan is?
- 1:57:03Speaker 4: That was my feel, Ev, is I didn't like going
- 1:57:05Speaker 4: for a fourth. First of all, a fourth and five
- 1:57:07Speaker 4: is not a gimme.
- 1:57:08Speaker 2: No.
- 1:57:09Speaker 4: But I didn't like going for a fourth and five.
- 1:57:11Speaker 4: So early in a game when you know you're playing
- 1:57:13Speaker 4: an opponent that has been very aggressive in the blitzes
- 1:57:15Speaker 4: and you're playing two guards that you don't know exactly
- 1:57:18Speaker 4: what you're going to get. The game hasn't declared yet.
- 1:57:21Speaker 4: You don't know.
- 1:57:21Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 1:57:22Speaker 4: They've thrown these blitzes at us and we've had, we
- 1:57:24Speaker 4: know what we're doing. We handled it. This is the
- 1:57:25Speaker 4: first drive of the game. You don't know how you're
- 1:57:27Speaker 4: handling it. And, and I wouldn't necessarily just say like that,
- 1:57:31Speaker 4: that play, I think Evan's right. They needed to have
- 1:57:34Speaker 4: a solution with the routes. Like, I think they ended
- 1:57:37Speaker 4: up with three guys that were kind of running vertical
- 1:57:39Speaker 4: on that play. And it was nowhere for Drake. He
- 1:57:41Speaker 4: probably had time to throw it. If someone was looking, um,
- 1:57:45Speaker 4: I just, I didn't like it going for fourth down because, um,
- 1:57:49Speaker 4: of all the things that you mentioned, like they're going
- 1:57:52Speaker 4: to come after you and you don't know if you're
- 1:57:53Speaker 4: going to be able to pick it up or not.
- 1:57:54Speaker 4: Cause you haven't done it yet.
- 1:57:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:57:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:57:57Speaker 6: It was, they were slow to adjust to it on
- 1:57:59Speaker 6: Thursday night. You know, the first two drives stall out
- 1:58:02Speaker 6: because of pressure and because the blitzes and specifically just
- 1:58:06Speaker 6: wait till Brian Flores comes here in a couple months.
- 1:58:08Speaker 3: Does he do blitzes?
- 1:58:09Speaker 2: Is that?
- 1:58:10Speaker 4: Oh my goodness.
- 1:58:11Speaker 6: There was one rep against the Colts that poor Daniel
- 1:58:14Speaker 6: Jones got clobbered. I was like, oh God.
- 1:58:19Speaker 2: That's going to be it for this edition of Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:58:22Speaker 2: Evan needs to get on the internet and look for
- 1:58:24Speaker 2: a house in Texas because that's the only place football
- 1:58:26Speaker 2: is going to be played in. In about 10, 20 years.
- 1:58:28Speaker 4: You really are passionate about this, huh? You just won't
- 1:58:31Speaker 4: give it up.
- 1:58:33Speaker 2: I'm just worried. I'm just worried.
- 1:58:35Speaker 4: You got nothing to worry about. We got plenty of
- 1:58:36Speaker 4: football for you.
- 1:58:37Speaker 2: Oh, listen.
- 1:58:38Speaker 3: You're right.
- 1:58:39Speaker 2: I'm not going to be around that long.
- 1:58:41Speaker 4: That was ageism. That's my point.
- 1:58:43Speaker 2: But hopefully you're going to have kids and, you know.
- 1:58:46Speaker 3: Don't deprive the NFL of the young Lazars.
- 1:58:48Speaker 2: No kids for Evan?
- 1:58:51Speaker 3: I want to pay me more than I can afford.
- 1:58:53Speaker 2: Kids aren't in your future?
- 1:58:54Speaker 4: We'll talk about that.
- 1:58:56Speaker 2: Off air?
- 1:58:56Speaker 4: What's into his film watching time?
- 1:58:58Speaker 2: Why can't you talk about it on air?
- 1:59:00Speaker 3: Because it's private.
- 1:59:01Speaker 2: Okay. All right. All right. We will be back tomorrow
- 1:59:04Speaker 2: as well as Catch-22 at 10 o'clock.
- 1:59:07Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:59:08Speaker 2: So big day tomorrow. We'll see you then.
- 1:59:12Speaker 3: Hey, this is Deuce. Thanks for tuning into the show.
