Transcript
- 0:00Oh my, it's most things Kenobi where we always have the high
- 0:06ground. Hi everyone, welcome to another
- 0:20episode of Most Things Kenobi, a podcast about Obi Wan Kenobi and
- 0:23all things Star Wars. I'm your host, Leanne.
- 0:27And I'm your host, Lauren. This episode we are going to
- 0:31discuss fanfics, and within this episode about fanfics, we're
- 0:37going to basically just start with why we started reading
- 0:42them, why we started writing them, which ones we like and
- 0:48what ones we turn to time and time again, and just kind of
- 0:52general chat about fanfiction. Yeah, it's a love letter to
- 0:57fanfiction. They're they're a special subset
- 1:02of fandom, but also of writing. So it's it's kind of like the
- 1:07best of both worlds for you and me, 'cause we really things.
- 1:11Yes, and I know it gets a bad rap.
- 1:14Like it's always made fun of. It's not real writing.
- 1:18It's not, it's not real talent, blah blah.
- 1:23I think it is. I think it is.
- 1:25I think it is too. And I also think it's funny that
- 1:27it's like always laughed at, like it's the ultimate sign of a
- 1:30nerd. But like, some fanfics are
- 1:33better than sanctioned. You know, quote official books.
- 1:39Yeah, totally. And not only that, like really,
- 1:42who is it harming? I mean, there are some out there
- 1:45that I do not, I do not read. There are lines I won't cross,
- 1:50but personal reading, genres, themes, I don't know.
- 1:57Not everything out there is for everyone, myself included, but.
- 2:02Yeah. I think the reason why I started
- 2:05with fan fiction was because I wanted more about a character
- 2:10that I wasn't getting from the quote official media.
- 2:15Yeah. And there's room to explore.
- 2:18Yes, there's like something about the original work that
- 2:21leaves you either wanting more or feeling like you don't have
- 2:25full closure on something. So you go to fanfiction and get
- 2:30that closure that you can't have officially.
- 2:33Do you remember what the first fandom was that you got pulled
- 2:36into for fanfiction? Lord of the Rings.
- 2:40Oh, really? Oh, that's so interesting.
- 2:42Yeah. And I really, it was so long.
- 2:44I mean, it was then, it was for me.
- 2:46This would have been like 2001. OK wow.
- 2:51I'm pretty sure I don't even remember what I typed in to get
- 2:55it. Yeah, like what existed back
- 2:59then? I don't even have a clue.
- 3:01Like the two main sites I know of our AO3 Archive of Our Own
- 3:05and fanfiction.net is that. Yes, and that's the one I do
- 3:10remember finding Lord of the Rings fanfictions on.
- 3:15That one does seem like it's been around since the early
- 3:182000s. It's got that vibes.
- 3:21It totally is like message board vibe.
- 3:25You know I have like. Myspace.
- 3:27I literally have not been on that site.
- 3:28I don't even know if I could log in.
- 3:30I don't know that I remember my name or my fucking password.
- 3:34Same, honestly I think I've only logged in there once or twice.
- 3:38I usually use archive avaro that's like my go to.
- 3:42Yeah, me too. I mean now.
- 3:46Fanfiction.net is kind of known for being a little tamer, right?
- 3:50I think they have more community guidelines.
- 3:53I really don't even remember. Honestly though is a free for
- 3:57all. Like people can post almost
- 3:59anything on there. So yeah, you can end up in some
- 4:02accidental dark corners of the Internet on.
- 4:05There totally, without a doubt heed.
- 4:08The tags. The tags.
- 4:10Are important. The tags are very important.
- 4:17Take them seriously. You know what's funny is I got a
- 4:22comment one time. I have slow burn as A tag on on
- 4:27my stories and. Yeah.
- 4:29I don't think I really talk about this a lot, and many of
- 4:33you may not know that I've written stuff, which is totally
- 4:35fine, but I have slow burn as A tag and someone wrote this is
- 4:41moving too slow, not interested. And I'm like, you didn't read
- 4:46the tags, did you? So heed the tags, folks.
- 4:52Heed the. Tags, yeah, I know.
- 4:55And now people are kind of asking you to put tags or like
- 4:58trigger warnings on each chapter, which I'm, I feel torn
- 5:02on that sometimes 'cause I feel like that's what the tags are
- 5:06for. So like, yeah, but also I get it
- 5:09at the same time, Yeah, I mean. I don't know, I I just remember
- 5:16it's still a story. If I could log back into
- 5:20fanfiction.net, I would go back. It was a story.
- 5:25The very first one I ever looked up and saved and reread was like
- 5:31young Faramir, young Boromir and them as brothers.
- 5:35Oh my gosh, that's adorable. I wanted more on their
- 5:41relationship and I I'm I must have typed in like stories about
- 5:46Boromir and Faramir as brothers or lore or something I don't
- 5:50remember. And Tolkien has a lot of like
- 5:54appendix type stuff. There's, you know, his his
- 5:58writings that aren't a part of the book, but are in a way, like
- 6:01there's X number hundreds of pages of this appendices stuff.
- 6:07And that was great too. And I just wanted more.
- 6:10So I'm really thankful that there are talented individuals
- 6:14out there who can take characters and build upon the
- 6:17story and give us what we're imagining anyway.
- 6:21Like, I wonder what it would be like if those two characters
- 6:25were little kids, brother, growing up in ministerial, you
- 6:28know, and that sort of thing. That's awesome and I love that.
- 6:31Like, have you ever written any Lord of the Rings fan fiction?
- 6:35No. See I think I have the same
- 6:37thing where there's certain fandoms I will only read like I
- 6:40have no interest in writing anything for them, but I love
- 6:42reading fan fictions for them. Yeah, I can't touch it because
- 6:46it's so close to me, but I can fuck around with some Star Wars
- 6:48characters and I've actually written some Marvel.
- 6:50The Marvel stories are my most popular.
- 6:53Because they're about Bucky. Hello.
- 6:55Yes, please and thank you. Yeah.
- 6:58I came up with a pretty good storyline.
- 6:59I'm not going to lie, I was really impressed with myself.
- 7:02I love your stories. That's how we became friends.
- 7:04Actually, the very first thing, I had forgotten this because I,
- 7:08I went back into one of our first MTK episodes and I heard
- 7:11this and I was like, Oh my God, how did I forget this?
- 7:13Yeah, we talked about. Yeah, started.
- 7:15Talking because you I said something about Obi Wan drinking
- 7:20like getting that horrible scene in a tech of the clowns.
- 7:23You know you don't want to sell me death sticks that scene and
- 7:26then you commented like you had written a scene of Obi Wan going
- 7:31to a bar drinking. Would I like to read it?
- 7:32And I was like, yes, I would. And that's kind of how we became
- 7:37friends. It's.
- 7:38So funny because you seemed so professional in your not seemed
- 7:42that makes it sound like you're not.
- 7:44But you seemed extremely well spoken and professional in your
- 7:48Instagram back in the day. And like you had so many
- 7:52screenshots of Obi Wan from from the Clone Wars.
- 7:56And I was like, oh, oh, she writes let's talk to her.
- 8:01Let's talk to her. Anyhow, yeah, we did.
- 8:03We did kind of bond over that. Yeah, and you have, I mean,
- 8:08you've wrote that the one of Obi Wan and Nyla, like, I love that
- 8:12story. Yeah, one of your your original
- 8:15characters. Yeah, yeah, Nyla's a good one.
- 8:18You did a. Great one of Anakin you did some
- 8:21great ones with Luke and Anakin like you, you have some great
- 8:24stories. I I.
- 8:25This is not supposed to be about me this episode.
- 8:28No, but I mean it's part of our friendship though.
- 8:31Like we used to share chapters or like we just we haven't done
- 8:35that and that and a really long time now.
- 8:37Our lives are just so busy and hectic always.
- 8:42But like I remember shooting chapters back and forth to each
- 8:47other for the fix that you're writing.
- 8:48And like, I don't want anyone ever to beta my stuff, but I
- 8:52always look forward to like, sending you what I was writing
- 8:56because I knew like you would. Get it?
- 8:57Yes, and I did. And I loved every second of it.
- 9:00Honestly it was, though I do cherish those moments.
- 9:03What was the first fanfic you ever looked up?
- 9:05Which what? What fandom was it?
- 9:07Star Wars? It wasn't.
- 9:10It was Batman. Was it Batman?
- 9:13It wasn't. No.
- 9:14It's super obscure and weird. It was Miss Fisher murder
- 9:18mysteries. Oh, but we love Miss Fisher
- 9:21here. That's amazing.
- 9:23I didn't know that. Yeah, at the time I looked it
- 9:27up, it was, I think only two seasons had come out and they'd
- 9:31slow burned those characters and 'cause it was such an expensive
- 9:35show, you waited like years for another 8 episodes to come out
- 9:39and it was just like, God, they are so in love and they won't
- 9:43just let it happen. So finally I was like fuck it,
- 9:45there's got to be a fanfic out there that will satisfy my
- 9:48needs. And there were and they were
- 9:50fantastic. And then when they made season 3
- 9:53and the movie, you could tell the writer had read some of
- 9:57those. Fanfictions.
- 9:58Oh no shit, I didn't know that. That's interesting.
- 10:02There was a few things and there I was like, that looks awfully
- 10:05familiar. It was good stuff, very saucy.
- 10:13It's all very saucy. Well, that's another reason why
- 10:15we like fan fiction 'cause we can get a little saucy where we
- 10:19we don't get to get that way with most of the normal stuff
- 10:23that is out there. But it's not like boyfriend
- 10:29always thinks that it's just people banging.
- 10:31And it's like, no, it's not. It's not more than that.
- 10:36Most of it is more than that, although you can get that if
- 10:38that's all you want. Listen.
- 10:40It's definitely out there. I mean, I mean, what is it?
- 10:44The plot? Porn without plot?
- 10:47It's the POP. Yes.
- 10:49If you want that, you can find it, but it's funny to me because
- 10:54you think that's what most people are looking for.
- 10:57But like, not really. You and I have both written
- 11:00fanfics that are long. They don't even necessarily have
- 11:04that kind of stuff in it. It's just very character driven.
- 11:07And those are the ones that are the most popular that you write.
- 11:11Like people want the substance. Yes.
- 11:13In fact, like I enjoy, I mean just personally, I enjoy coming
- 11:17up with an actual story because my brain likes to have an outlet
- 11:21in that manner. And I've always liked to write
- 11:23and I definitely don't do it in my job.
- 11:26So it's the left brain being exercised for once, whereas the
- 11:31sciency, I guess right brain of me is what pays the bills.
- 11:35But I have the fun with trying to be creatively, I don't know,
- 11:41just creative on paper, electronically.
- 11:46And that's really what I seek out in others.
- 11:48I remember when I first got into the Viking show, like Vikings
- 11:52with Ragnar and and the sons and everything, and was that on like
- 11:57A&E or History Channel? What?
- 11:59I don't even remember. I'm.
- 12:01Not age Bo am I way off? I don't even I don't even know.
- 12:04But everyone knows Vikings, right?
- 12:06There's so many offshoots of that.
- 12:07But it was the original show and God, I was like, I bet there's
- 12:13fanfics out there that are really good with the certain
- 12:17characters, and I found some really good ones that
- 12:20individuals that can write really bring it.
- 12:23I mean really, bring it. You have to be really passionate
- 12:28about the subject because it's so time consuming and then it's
- 12:32so vulnerable. I'm I'm sure that this is true
- 12:35of any creative outlet, but writing feels so vulnerable
- 12:39because it's like your inner monologue for everyone to see
- 12:43and not necessarily that you know, just because you write
- 12:47something doesn't mean it's part of like your own existence.
- 12:50That's the whole point of creativity is creating something
- 12:53that you may never experience yourself.
- 12:55But there's I'm just amazed by the dedication of people who
- 13:02write fan fiction to stick with stuff for years, either as a
- 13:09reader or a writer to like care enough to weave it into
- 13:14pre-existing plot lines. You know it's.
- 13:18Just. I applaud it.
- 13:19And so anyone who talks shit about it really doesn't.
- 13:24Maybe they don't quite understand what goes into the
- 13:28whole process and why people love it.
- 13:31And, and there's this great scene of Ben Wyatt and Parks
- 13:36and, and Rec forcing someone to listen to a fanfiction he wrote
- 13:39about Star Trek. And she wants to like, RIP her
- 13:41own ears off. It's really funny 'cause like,
- 13:44we've all kind of been there where you're very excited about
- 13:47a subject and no one else gives a shit.
- 13:49Totally. There's people on the Internet
- 13:52who do care. There are there's at least two
- 13:55websites dedicated to this. Exactly, and like any fandom you
- 14:02can think of, like the most bizarre, oblique, weird
- 14:07reference, you could probably find a fanfiction for it
- 14:10somewhere. Is there a a a faction of fan
- 14:15fiction that you don't like that you don't gravitate towards
- 14:19meaning a style. Not not like thematics, but a
- 14:23style. Well, I have a, if you've read
- 14:28any of my stuff, you know, I have a very high tolerance for
- 14:31most things, but they're were some stories where the violence
- 14:39in particular would just be so extreme that I had to like bow
- 14:45out eventually 'cause it was just like, I can't keep getting
- 14:48this into my brain. And like there's a, it's a
- 14:52particular writer who, who deleted their account.
- 14:55They didn't even abandoned the account and they were super
- 15:00prolific. They wrote lots of stuff.
- 15:02Their stuff was excellently written and a lot of it I really
- 15:05like. Some of it was a little much for
- 15:08me, but some of it was exceptional.
- 15:10Like it was very good. I don't know.
- 15:13But yeah, I, I, I can understand that.
- 15:16There's also, you know, like sexual violence is also
- 15:20prevalent in in fanfic writing. And that is something I
- 15:24generally. You know, totally.
- 15:28I guess if you're if you're a pro, free speech fan fiction is
- 15:33all about. That.
- 15:34Yeah, like I like you said, it goes into dark territory.
- 15:37Like what about you? What is?
- 15:39How would you answer that question?
- 15:41I don't like alternate universe stuff, never got into it.
- 15:44Was that what you meant? Went.
- 15:46Really. Dark well.
- 15:49Yeah, that I don't like that either that.
- 15:56I I I struggle with picturing certain characters in alternate
- 16:00universes, although I see how it can be fun.
- 16:04Yeah, like I guess I generally avoid modern AU and I really
- 16:11don't like crossover. I don't like when fandoms
- 16:14crossover. Yeah.
- 16:16Same, I just find it too cluttered for my own brain
- 16:20personally. But yeah, there was one.
- 16:24I will say there was an AU that was Obi Wan and Sateen in, I
- 16:29think we, we've talked about this before in Speakeasy era
- 16:33Chicago. Yeah.
- 16:34And I was like, I could buy into this.
- 16:37So I'm tell me more. And then they just stop writing
- 16:40the fakes. Aww, that's too bad.
- 16:43And I did read. I definitely enjoyed this.
- 16:48It was Cassie and Andora was a vampire and Gin or so was a
- 16:52vampire hunter and I enjoyed that very much.
- 16:58I would have never thought that, but it it works, it works.
- 17:01Yeah, it works really well. I generally though avoid a you.
- 17:05You're right though. Well, I can also picture Obi Wan
- 17:10and Sateen in a Speakeasy setting.
- 17:12I see how I could see how that. I just don't want to.
- 17:15I don't, I'm not interested enough to like read it, but I
- 17:17can picture it and that's fine. Yeah.
- 17:19I just more intrigued on the idea of seeing or like I guess
- 17:23imagining Obi Wan and those that era of clothing.
- 17:28Now that yes, yes, agreed, yes. Yeah.
- 17:35I can see that. So with Star Wars fan fiction,
- 17:41because obviously we're a Star Wars podcast, what do you
- 17:44generally gravitate to? Like, what if you are seeking
- 17:47something out? What are you looking for
- 17:48usually? That's funny.
- 17:55If you dare answer that question, I know that's kind of
- 17:59a personal question. You can generalize it, just no
- 18:02doesn't. I look for Anakin and Padme
- 18:06because OK, I'm, I'm so biased with Anakin, but I never quite
- 18:14liked the character of Padme 100% right.
- 18:19There's always a little something, something off that
- 18:21that always made me like her less than I would have
- 18:23preferred. I did dig into Padme and Anakin
- 18:27during the Republic era, you know, while they're married, but
- 18:31not she's not pregnant yet. And it's still kind of new just
- 18:35to see how others interpreted Padme as a character.
- 18:40And I did find one. They are in a winter setting.
- 18:44I don't remember the planet, but it was it was a winter setting.
- 18:49And it was very interesting the way that this particular author
- 18:53wrote Padme in a way that I've I gravitated to more.
- 18:57It was like her inner dialogue and it was something that we
- 18:59don't usually get with Padme. And so that's exactly what I was
- 19:03seeking out is kind of a more of an understanding of this
- 19:07character that I'm not getting from the main media forms of
- 19:11Padme. So interesting.
- 19:13Did it lead you to like her a little bit more or not?
- 19:16It didn't really. Yeah, a little like a little bit
- 19:19more. It was still, you know, cuz when
- 19:22you write fanfic, you're at least in, in my personal
- 19:26writing, you're trying to stay true to the character
- 19:29themselves. I.
- 19:30Don't want to deviate too much away from I want to I want to
- 19:34enhance but not deviate and I believe that this author did
- 19:38that enhanced but didn't deviate.
- 19:39So they're still like the mamby pamby Padme's shit.
- 19:45You know, to be to be exact. But but the Anakin was
- 19:50phenomenal. The way she wrote the boyish
- 19:56struggling to become a man, struggling to hide the darkness,
- 19:59struggling to be a good man, you know, Oh my God, it was so it
- 20:05that one I have bookmarked and it's on AO3.
- 20:08I could dig it up. It's real good.
- 20:11It's real good. I don't remember the name of it
- 20:13though, but it was I think it was like 4 very long chapters.
- 20:18Very long chapters. How interesting is it?
- 20:21I these are the things that I kind of love about fanfiction
- 20:25cause what you're just saying there is some people like to
- 20:27deviate a lot and make the characters completely different.
- 20:31It's like they get irritated with the character being boxed
- 20:34in. So they make them so far away
- 20:36from Canon that to me it often feels like like just write your
- 20:41own story. That's it.
- 20:43But there's that and then there's that.
- 20:47Some people also would love to write like, I don't even know,
- 20:52break it down into like, I guess, quote UN quote, normal
- 20:55length of chapters. Some people just write it all as
- 20:57one thing. Some people like, put it into
- 21:00four really long chapters. Yeah, it was like a four part
- 21:04movie almost. It was like a four part series.
- 21:07Yeah, it's so cool. I, I kind of enjoy watching how
- 21:11people break up their own story as well 'cause I, I think that
- 21:16that's part of the experience, you know?
- 21:18Yeah, it is. It's a that's a good way to to
- 21:21phrase that because I never really quite thought of it that
- 21:23way until this moment. And now I'm thinking about how I
- 21:26break chapters and I I don't really know that I had a
- 21:28formula. Well, sometimes it's because
- 21:31like it kind of tells you how the person either felt too.
- 21:35It's it's kind of like they had just gushed it all out into one
- 21:38chapter and they're just like, here, take it.
- 21:41Yeah. And other people, it's like they
- 21:44I don't, I don't want to say it's more methodical because
- 21:46it's not. I'm not trying to like down talk
- 21:49that method at all because that's actually a really fun,
- 21:52validating and exciting way to write where it's just like brain
- 21:55vomit. Yeah, yeah, totally.
- 21:57Yeah. And then you can go the other
- 21:59extreme where you're like really meticulous and like plotting
- 22:03this full arc and you can see the people who do that as well.
- 22:08And I find both methods totally enjoyable.
- 22:11It just depends on what mood you're in.
- 22:13Yeah, it is. I it's harder for me to go back
- 22:15and reread portions I really like in an extra long.
- 22:20Yeah. Chapter, so to speak.
- 22:22If it's harder to find it again. Yeah, especially on a phone, you
- 22:27can't do a like a word search or you know something.
- 22:31But I think I always wrote it to where it's definitely the end of
- 22:39it. It has a complete stop, but it
- 22:41leads into the next thing and I need a hard.
- 22:43I need a break. It there needs to be some sort
- 22:45of physical break. I do that too.
- 22:48Sometimes I even deliberately Cliffhang yeah, say lots of the
- 22:54chapters because I as a reader, that's what I enjoy and you and
- 22:58I have talked about that too. A lot of times we're just
- 23:00writing ourselves what we would like to read a. 100% readers
- 23:05couldn't agree more. Yeah.
- 23:08And usually it's more about the character and putting them in
- 23:11situations. You want to see them in more
- 23:12situations, so you play around with it.
- 23:16I think Clone Wars is a great catalyst for fan fiction because
- 23:20they like tease you with scenarios.
- 23:22Yes. Yes, and they give you more
- 23:25characters too. You can add yes, you can add
- 23:28clones now. You can add different Admirals,
- 23:31different Jedi that we've come to learn about and know and all
- 23:35kinds of stuff. Different planets.
- 23:37Yeah, it's good stuff. Yeah, and they have like,
- 23:41developed the characters just enough to keep you wanting more.
- 23:45Because it's a kids show quote. Oh.
- 23:46Yeah, sure. They bring you right up to the
- 23:49edge of something and then they're like and end of the
- 23:52episode and you're like, what the fuck?
- 23:55There's more. Tell me more.
- 23:57I know, I know. How could you go to Sigeria and
- 24:00come back and not have emotional trauma?
- 24:02How? We still need somebody needs to
- 24:05write about the therapist in the temple, in the Jedi Temple.
- 24:08Maybe I'll do that someday. Full series.
- 24:12It's the therapist's notes in the Jedi Temple, and that's the
- 24:16story. Different chapters are the
- 24:18different therapy notes. They're just every Jedi's
- 24:23medical file. That's what these.
- 24:25Yes. Books are.
- 24:27Today I saw Ahsoka. She had a lot to say about that
- 24:32last mission where she was. Attacked by.
- 24:37Yeah, or that, I don't know. I was just thinking like all
- 24:39kinds. Of or haunted Haunted by.
- 24:42Yeah. Trend oceans like there's so
- 24:45many things we could list. Obi Wan ate three pies over his
- 24:50sink last night and he's feeling quite guilty today.
- 24:53I asked him, tell me why you where you feel the guilt in your
- 24:56body and how you would like to. I'm sorry.
- 25:03I gotta go on and on. The pain centers around my
- 25:06stomach. You realize it's just 'cause you
- 25:09ate three pies, Yeah? It's a carb overload Obi Wan.
- 25:13You'll be OK, go take a nap. Drink some water.
- 25:19Do you know of a fanfic story that you wish you would have
- 25:22written or someone would write because it's something that
- 25:25you're dying to know and read? Just any topic, any fandom.
- 25:29Oh. My God, that's a good.
- 25:32That is a great question. Yes, yes.
- 25:36What is it to? Care to share?
- 25:39I guess I kind of write the ones that I'm most curious about.
- 25:42Well, if if there's one that you would tackle, is there one you
- 25:45would tackle because you want to explore?
- 25:48There is and I'm. I'm actually almost done with
- 25:51it. It's I've always been interested
- 25:55in what happens to Obi Wan after Qui Gon dies and he has to go
- 25:59back to the temple and start taking care of this little boy.
- 26:03Yep. Yeah, that's a good one.
- 26:07Yeah, that one. And like I want to rewrite
- 26:14season 2 of Andor. Oh my goodness, I.
- 26:22Actually wrote an outline a while ago, but I'll never, yeah,
- 26:27I'll never write it. It's too convoluted.
- 26:29And is it? Did you write it after you saw
- 26:32season 2 or did you write it? Yeah.
- 26:34Yeah. OK, I did.
- 26:35Yeah. I might want to see this
- 26:38outline. There's just so many strands
- 26:41that didn't connect. And I was like, I, I know I can
- 26:43do this better. And I know that sounds like so
- 26:46arrogant, but I knew I could, yeah.
- 26:51I believe it. I believe there's a lot that you
- 26:53could contribute to this show, yes.
- 26:56I just felt like what they laid down in season 1 was so rich and
- 27:02interesting and, and was going to tie perfectly into Rogue One.
- 27:06And then I feel like they, I think the structure, we talked
- 27:09about this in our and or episodes, like the structure
- 27:12just kind of sent them in directions that made it
- 27:15difficult to close certain loops.
- 27:17And I yeah, that's all. What about you?
- 27:20What would you like? I always wanted a female to be
- 27:24part of the Fellowship of the Ring.
- 27:26Oh. Yeah, I always wanted a female
- 27:28character to be included in the like main characters of Lord of
- 27:34the Rings that are in the Fellowship.
- 27:37And I always wanted to explore that, like if there had been
- 27:43just a female in there. Not because I want
- 27:45representation, but I, I do think it would create a
- 27:47different dynamic and and a female character could bring
- 27:50something different to the lineup and how things played
- 27:53out. And I've thought about it at
- 27:55length, and I'm not going to talk about it, but I think that
- 27:59would be fun to explore. Yeah, yeah, that's really cool.
- 28:04Do you remember the first fan fiction you ever wrote?
- 28:08Not necessarily shared with anybody, but that Like, how old
- 28:11were you when you wrote your first piece?
- 28:13That was probably just for you. It was kind of like my brain was
- 28:17was doing hockey. I was writing about hockey.
- 28:20So yeah. Because I love hockey.
- 28:23Yeah, I mean, you're a huge, I'm going to say the wrong team.
- 28:28Penguins. Thank you, Penguins.
- 28:29I was going to say, I was going to say A-Team and I'm like,
- 28:32Nope, that's football. Well, footyball, all the sporty
- 28:37balls. I just love hockey in general
- 28:40and I always wanted to, you know, create, create my own
- 28:43team. So I don't know who counts as a
- 28:45fandom, but I am a fan of hockey, so.
- 28:48And there are sports fandom fanfics out there.
- 28:52Yeah, that's, it's so interesting 'cause it's not just
- 28:55we're just talking about it in like terms of fandom, but it is.
- 28:58There's quote fan fiction for all.
- 29:01Sorts of actually actually, if anyone is on like bookstagram or
- 29:06book talk, I'm not on TikTok, but I know it's a part of this
- 29:10is there is actually I have a Kindle, Amazon Kindle and I used
- 29:17to have Kindle unlimited. Or you could get like a book for
- 29:21free or very discount or something with the with the
- 29:25membership. And one of the top books lately
- 29:28is a hockey themed like romance book.
- 29:31Really. And I.
- 29:32Saw it and I'm like hey, wait a second now it's mainstream.
- 29:39OK, but. You're ahead of your time.
- 29:43Way ahead. But I I noticed that it has like
- 29:47a Part 2 and everyone's gravitating towards the part.
- 29:49I'm just like oh man, I'm not going to read it.
- 29:52I can't I. Have to.
- 29:54But I can see where it would be a good themed story thing to
- 30:00explore. I've been there.
- 30:01Yeah. Well, you know, there's
- 30:05competition, there's there's enemies, there's there's love
- 30:10interest, there's high stakes. Same as a Jedi.
- 30:15It's that's it. It's it's, it's all.
- 30:23Like a Jedi. I mean it's true people are
- 30:27crazy about sports of all kinds. Like it's we even have a couple
- 30:33listeners who are big into what is it FF1, What is it the
- 30:38racing. Yep, the racing.
- 30:40Yeah, it's a huge thing. Well, now they have movies and
- 30:43soundtracks and all kinds of stuff about all that, so.
- 30:48It's people love that stuff. Fan fiction.
- 30:52Fan fiction is just it. It's fiction.
- 30:55Why does it have to have fan attached to it?
- 30:56It's just fiction. 'Cause we don't get paid.
- 31:00Well that too. OK fair fair, but it even if I
- 31:05mean there was 50 Shades of grey, wasn't that a fucking fan
- 31:08fiction turned like. Don't get me.
- 31:10I mean, I can't say I didn't read it.
- 31:12I so I can't say honestly, but yeah.
- 31:14I will tell you I tried to read it.
- 31:18It was an insult to my intelligence and me as a woman.
- 31:23Yeah, it. Was not OK.
- 31:25Yeah. Not for me, stayed away from it.
- 31:27I thought it would just fill me with rage so.
- 31:30It's it's something it's not for me, but I know a lot of people
- 31:34really liked it. I think they were of a certain
- 31:38age at the time. Well, like, it's what my sister
- 31:43and I call snack fiction, where it's just like.
- 31:46That's a good way to. Put it Yeah.
- 31:47It's not like a piece of literature.
- 31:49It's something you read on the beach.
- 31:51For me, snack fiction is fan fiction.
- 31:53Like I, I would rather read fan fiction.
- 31:56Yeah, 'cause yeah, I, I love, I used to really love.
- 32:03There was this one fanfic writer who wrote fan fiction of the
- 32:07Jedi Apprentice novels and. Oh, so fiction about fiction?
- 32:13Like writing fiction about written fiction.
- 32:16That's yeah. OK.
- 32:19I know it's so meta cause also it's legends of Star Wars it's
- 32:23not even Canon anymore. But I.
- 32:26Liked those books, but they like the they just weren't.
- 32:30I didn't read them as a kid the first time I read them as an
- 32:33adult. I have very fond memories of
- 32:37having to track each copy down because they're not even YA.
- 32:41They're like children literature.
- 32:47So they're like chapter books for like 7 year olds.
- 32:51And I'd have to go to the most obscure libraries in the city of
- 32:54Chicago when I was living there, check down these books, and they
- 32:58would always assume I was checking them out for like, my
- 33:01child, like I don't have. Children.
- 33:04This is for me. Oh my God, secrets out.
- 33:09Yeah, exactly. So like, I was, I read all of
- 33:12them and they were OK, but they left me like feeling like, oh
- 33:15man, they, they couldn't make these stories into what I really
- 33:18want 'cause they're not. They're for very small children.
- 33:21So I went and found fan fiction that made them incredible.
- 33:25They were so much better 'cause it was like the story, but
- 33:28written for an adult with an adult perspective.
- 33:30And it was just really beautifully done.
- 33:32And one of that authors also did.
- 33:37Obi Wan is a young apprentice taking a life for the first
- 33:41time. Oh, that would be an interesting
- 33:44thing to explore. It was really interesting 'cause
- 33:47it wasn't even necessarily on purpose.
- 33:49It was like his hand was forced by a person who was like overly
- 33:52aggressive and he, like had no choice in the matter.
- 33:55It was very good. It was very interesting idea.
- 33:58So that was stuff I like, gravitated to the when I first
- 34:01kind of got into the Star Wars fandom, fan fiction.
- 34:06Yeah, Yeah. I mean, there's so many
- 34:09different aspects to it and it's just, it's just an outlet and
- 34:14people need outlets because like you, we can get a season of a
- 34:18show that we desperately loved and it doesn't go the way we
- 34:22wanted or hoped. So we we need an outlet or
- 34:26there's character exploration that needs done that we're never
- 34:30going to get like Little Bore Mirror and Little Fair Mirror,
- 34:33you know, stuff like that. Right.
- 34:36And so well. Especially because that because
- 34:37like Tolkien is gone, there's not going to be any more
- 34:41official stuff that comes out. So you have to have fan fiction.
- 34:46Right, right. And I to.
- 34:47Tie you over. Honestly, it's just not feasible
- 34:52for every single person who's talented in writing to get
- 34:57authored and published and given a paycheck.
- 35:00And so I think it's great that this kind of fan fiction outlet
- 35:06is there for people who do have a talent, who want to write, who
- 35:10need to write and who need to be, you know, creatively
- 35:14exploring different genres and different medias and different
- 35:18things. I I just.
- 35:18I'm glad it exists. Yeah, me too.
- 35:23I am too. It's such a comfort, honestly.
- 35:25Like anytime I get on the AO3 website, I feel calmer, which is
- 35:31so weird. I think it's because I associate
- 35:33it with like, it's kind of like that feeling of getting a good
- 35:36book and like getting under a blanket with your cozy drink and
- 35:39like diving into something that you know is going to be exactly
- 35:42what you want. You know, it's like, it's kind
- 35:45of magical, 'cause you could find anything in there.
- 35:48Yeah, you can find some dark, scary stuff, but you could also
- 35:51find like, the exact story you've always been hoping you'd
- 35:54get. 100%, yeah. Yeah.
- 36:00I like it. I do too, like you said I'm very
- 36:03glad it exists and I love honestly I I feel really proud
- 36:09of AO3 because they fight really hard to protect the writers who
- 36:14post on there. Yeah, that's true.
- 36:17They have a whole legal team that's that's volunteer.
- 36:23Everything about AO3 is volunteer.
- 36:25And anytime they run like a drive to to earn money, they
- 36:31exceed their goal immediately because I think it means that
- 36:34much to people. 100% yeah, yeah. And it I mean it shows.
- 36:40Yeah. All right, join us back for our
- 36:50next episode. We're going to return to Luke
- 36:52Skywalker because it's been a minute since we talked about
- 36:55Luke. We're going to do kind of a Part
- 36:582 to an episode we've done previously where we talked about
- 37:01how Leia, all the ways Leia is like Anakin and Padme.
- 37:04We're going to do a version of that for Luke.
- 37:06So join us back next time. We're going to talk about how
- 37:08Luke is like his mother, Padme Amidala and his father Anakin
- 37:13Skywalker, and it's going to be fucking awesome.
