Lucas: We have: baguettes, croissants, tarte... but today it's all about the cake. A gâteau. Luna: A cake. That sounds delicious. What's the occasion? Lucas: We'll learn how to buy a cake for a birthday. So first phrase: Je voudrais un gâteau. Luna: Je voudrais un gâteau. Lucas: Perfect. Je voudrais means 'I would like' and un gâteau is 'a cake'. Luna: Je voudrais un gâteau. So if I walked into a bakery, I'd say that? Lucas: Exactly. Then the baker will ask: Quel parfum voulez-vous? Luna: Quel parfum voulez-vous? That means 'what flavor do you want?' Lucas: Right. Parfum here means flavor. So your answer could be: Je voudrais un gâteau au chocolat. Luna: Je voudrais un gâteau au chocolat. Chocolate cake. Yum. Lucas: Good. And if it's for a birthday, you can say: C'est pour un anniversaire. Luna: C'est pour un anniversaire. It's for a birthday. Luna: Je voudrais un gâteau au chocolat. C'est pour un anniversaire. Lucas: Great. Then when you decide, you say: Je le prends. That means 'I'll take it'. Luna: Je le prends. Simple. Lucas: And if you want to take it away, say: À emporter, s'il vous plaît. Luna: À emporter, s'il vous plaît. That's 'to go, please'. Lucas: Exactly. So a full conversation: Je voudrais un gâteau. Quel parfum? Au chocolat. C'est pour un anniversaire. Je le prends. À emporter. Luna: Je voudrais un gâteau. Au chocolat. C'est pour un anniversaire. Je le prends. À emporter. Lucas: You're a natural. Now let's imagine we're at the bakery. I'll be the baker. Luna: Okay. Bonjour! Lucas: Bonjour! Je voudrais un gâteau. Luna: Quel parfum voulez-vous?
