Latest / Birdland Territory / O's win four straight games, but Blaze Alexander fractures hand!
Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Well, it took ninety seven games those fans, But the
- 0:09Speaker 1: Oriols have their first four game winning streak of the season.
- 0:14Speaker 2: But typical of the place succeedment.
- 0:18Speaker 1: With really bad news, the hit by pitch of Blaze
- 0:22Speaker 1: Alexander from Lucas Ersag in the seventh inning. The bench
- 0:26Speaker 1: is empty. Nothing really happened except they suffered a broken
- 0:30Speaker 1: left hand, a non displaced fracture of the left hand.
- 0:33Speaker 1: He's going to miss significant time. The Oriols have not
- 0:36Speaker 1: told us how much. We can only speculate. This could
- 0:39Speaker 1: be weeks, this could be a month or two. And Tim,
- 0:43Speaker 1: let's start with you, because you were, you know, remnant,
- 0:46Speaker 1: remembering that Jordan Westburg had a similar issue in twenty
- 0:50Speaker 1: twenty four.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Yeah, it happened the day after the trade deadline July
- 0:56Speaker 3: thirty first, twenty twenty four. He suffered a right hand racture.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Similar situation that Blaze Alexander got hit while batting and
- 1:05Speaker 3: he didn't end up returning until September twenty second. And
- 1:09Speaker 3: Jordan Westburg, we know how important he is to this
- 1:12Speaker 3: Orioles team, going back to that point. But Blaze Alexander, guys,
- 1:16Speaker 3: this is a pretty brutal blow considering the fact that
- 1:21Speaker 3: he is leading all of baseball still in batting average
- 1:25Speaker 3: since May first, but even more so, Brad, he's leading
- 1:28Speaker 3: all of baseball with batting average with runners in scoring
- 1:31Speaker 3: position since May first as well. This has been such
- 1:35Speaker 3: an integral part of this team, one of, if not
- 1:38Speaker 3: their biggest pleasant surprises of the year. And to lose
- 1:42Speaker 3: him for an extended period of time right as you're
- 1:44Speaker 3: building momentum, oh man, just a big, big blow.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Yeah, it is.
- 1:49Speaker 5: And they finally got over the hump of the three
- 1:51Speaker 5: game winning streak, finally got that fourth game in a row.
- 1:54Speaker 5: You know, you're going into the All Star Break excited,
- 1:56Speaker 5: ready to These guys probably want to be back to
- 1:59Speaker 5: it being Friday already as much as they want the
- 2:00Speaker 5: time off. When you're on a roll like this, you
- 2:02Speaker 5: want to keep going. And unfortunately it's just going to
- 2:04Speaker 5: be some upsetting news in the clubhouse. Guys are going
- 2:07Speaker 5: to be rushing out, going home, getting on their flights
- 2:09Speaker 5: and stuff like that. But it's a big blow. I
- 2:11Speaker 5: think he gives some of the best at bats in
- 2:13Speaker 5: this entire lineup, uses all the fields.
- 2:15Speaker 4: He's not gonna have the home runs of you know, Pete.
- 2:17Speaker 5: Alonzo Gunner and those guys, but he keeps the lineup
- 2:20Speaker 5: rolling after it. They've been kind of sliding him up.
- 2:23Speaker 5: Today he was hitting in the six spot behind Basio
- 2:26Speaker 5: and it's an integral part of this lineup that's gone.
- 2:28Speaker 5: It's a guy that puts the ball in play, and
- 2:29Speaker 5: like you said, with the runners and scoring position, he's
- 2:32Speaker 5: just been so good since the beginning of May.
- 2:34Speaker 4: This hurts.
- 2:35Speaker 5: So it's going to be the next guy up again. Unfortunately,
- 2:38Speaker 5: We've we've talked about this multiple times this year. In
- 2:40Speaker 5: this first half. It's these injuries are just killing this team.
- 2:43Speaker 5: But it's they're hot right now. You just got to
- 2:45Speaker 5: hope somebody can step up and just kind of, you know,
- 2:48Speaker 5: keep the boat to float until he's able to come
- 2:50Speaker 5: back hopefully healthy. And I think for him it's upsetting
- 2:53Speaker 5: just because I think it's a career year for him
- 2:55Speaker 5: across the board offensively, and it's it's career at bats,
- 2:58Speaker 5: it's urbis, it's base it. I mean, it's across the board,
- 3:01Speaker 5: he's having his best year and now he's gonna be
- 3:03Speaker 5: looking at probably six weeks on the shelf. Like you said,
- 3:07Speaker 5: we're speculating on that, but it's it's a big blow,
- 3:09Speaker 5: and it's unfortunate going into the All Star break having
- 3:12Speaker 5: this kind of news hit them.
- 3:15Speaker 1: So do you guys think when he was hit by
- 3:17Speaker 1: the pitch his reaction was as much about feeling this
- 3:22Speaker 1: is something significant, But it seemed like he was upset
- 3:26Speaker 1: at the pitcher At the same time.
- 3:27Speaker 2: He said something to Ersag.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Ersag said something back, and the mass and cameras were
- 3:32Speaker 1: kind of guys who were eating his lips, saying, I'm
- 3:34Speaker 1: just pitching, you know, In other words, I'm just so.
- 3:36Speaker 2: I was just trying to throw inside or whatever, and
- 3:38Speaker 2: of course.
- 3:38Speaker 1: It went high and high and in and and got
- 3:41Speaker 1: his left hand, not his throwing hand, but bad enough
- 3:44Speaker 1: because you can't play with a non displaced fracture in
- 3:47Speaker 1: either hand. And so initially his reaction, what do you.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Think, Yeah, I think it was just he was mad.
- 3:54Speaker 4: I think I think he felt it right away. I
- 3:56Speaker 4: think it's just one of those things.
- 3:58Speaker 5: As a hitter, they don't want to get hit, period,
- 4:00Speaker 5: but when you get hit on your hand, you're pretty pissed.
- 4:02Speaker 4: You gotta throw.
- 4:03Speaker 5: I mean, I always had a hard time wondering how
- 4:06Speaker 5: guys miss so high and tight on guys, if you're
- 4:08Speaker 5: trying to throw a purpose pitch, throw it on the
- 4:11Speaker 5: plate or just up. You don't have to throw it
- 4:12Speaker 5: in off the plate towards a guy's face hand like
- 4:16Speaker 5: upper shoulder area. I always felt like, if you're trying
- 4:18Speaker 5: to go there for purpose, throw a little bit off
- 4:20Speaker 5: the plate, but not inside the chalk. And it's just
- 4:23Speaker 5: Hitters get frustrated when you when you do that, especially
- 4:25Speaker 5: when you get hit where he got hit. And I
- 4:27Speaker 5: thought when I saw it initially, Blaze's I mean, he's
- 4:31Speaker 5: an excited player, but his reaction told me that he
- 4:34Speaker 5: felt something immediately and he was just his initial reaction
- 4:37Speaker 5: was he was pissed and he got hit, and obviously
- 4:39Speaker 5: I think he felt something. I could just see as
- 4:41Speaker 5: the reaction went further along that he was really kind
- 4:45Speaker 5: of bathing his left hand and not using it to
- 4:47Speaker 5: pick up his helmet. Then when he got the first base,
- 4:49Speaker 5: it almost looked like there was a cut on his hand,
- 4:51Speaker 5: and I could just tell he wasn't in a good spot.
- 4:52Speaker 5: So I think it was just initial reaction of that hurt.
- 4:56Speaker 5: And I think I might actually be hurt from that pitch.
- 4:59Speaker 6: Curid.
- 5:00Speaker 3: It's just the frustration of everything, guys, because at that point,
- 5:03Speaker 3: the O's had already blown this game open. The game
- 5:06Speaker 3: felt pretty secure. You're about to have your first four
- 5:10Speaker 3: game winning streak, you're heading into the All Star Game.
- 5:12Speaker 3: But then it's what Brad was just saying. This is
- 5:16Speaker 3: a career year for Blaze Alexander and and for the
- 5:19Speaker 3: first time in his big league career, he's an everyday player.
- 5:23Speaker 6: You know, he wasn't that with the Diamondbacks.
- 5:26Speaker 3: They Orioles acquired him, trading Kate Stroud among others. And
- 5:30Speaker 3: at the beginning of the year, you know, he was
- 5:32Speaker 3: seen as this utility guy. But he has really carved
- 5:36Speaker 3: out a role in this ball club and he's just
- 5:39Speaker 3: so much fun to watch. You know, a guy with
- 5:42Speaker 3: high energy, a little bit of a cockiness to him,
- 5:45Speaker 3: which you like as well, you know, you like on
- 5:48Speaker 3: your team. And it sucks, man, it really sucks. And
- 5:53Speaker 3: I'm sure he just felt a ton of emotion in
- 5:56Speaker 3: that moment.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Let's remind the viewers right now, very soon, we've got
- 6:02Speaker 1: a mail bag show coming, maybe sooner than you think,
- 6:05Speaker 1: and we're looking for your questions here via the YouTube comments.
- 6:10Speaker 1: You can go to Birdland Territory on Twitter You can
- 6:12Speaker 1: write to our individual Twitter accounts, to Steve and Tim
- 6:16Speaker 1: on our individual Twitter accounts. For those that follow us,
- 6:19Speaker 1: a lot of ways to get to us. Send in
- 6:21Speaker 1: some questions. We're going to do retire show answering your
- 6:24Speaker 1: questions about the trade deadline, anything else you're thinking about
- 6:28Speaker 1: with the Orioles. Get them here, get them in quick,
- 6:31Speaker 1: and we'll have a mailbak show coming very soon. There
- 6:35Speaker 1: is a player on the Oriols forty man roster they
- 6:39Speaker 1: could call now, and he's got major league time. His
- 6:43Speaker 1: name is Christian and Carnacion Strand. He's playing the Major
- 6:47Speaker 1: leagues with the Reds. He is on the forty man.
- 6:49Speaker 1: He is, oh by the way, a third baseman who
- 6:51Speaker 1: also dabbles at first base, corner infield, and oh by
- 6:54Speaker 1: the way between two Triple A teams this year. His
- 6:57Speaker 1: ops is eight forty eight and he's hit nine teen
- 7:00Speaker 1: home runs. He has hit twenty one homers in four
- 7:04Speaker 1: hundred and sixty eight career Major league at bats for
- 7:06Speaker 1: the Reds. He's got some pop. I haven't seen him yet,
- 7:11Speaker 1: but he just keeps rolling along, playing well. I think
- 7:13Speaker 1: he's active and healthy as far as I know, and
- 7:16Speaker 1: I'm just speculating. We don't know anything about what move
- 7:18Speaker 1: they're gonna make. We do know this, Theos have time
- 7:21Speaker 1: with the break now. It could even be a trade.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I mean, they could make a deal between now and
- 7:26Speaker 1: Friday to add someone.
- 7:27Speaker 6: I think it's.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Gonna be interesting just how they're going to fill this spread,
- 7:32Speaker 3: because I would be surprised at this point if they're
- 7:35Speaker 3: just gonna roll with Kobe Mayo. I think they feel
- 7:38Speaker 3: comfortable in his role at this point. Look, he mashes
- 7:42Speaker 3: left handed pitching, that is abundantly clear, but he struggles
- 7:45Speaker 3: against right handed pitching. So I think they need to
- 7:48Speaker 3: bring in someone just to scrape it together. Maybe you
- 7:50Speaker 3: can have a platoon situation out at third base, but
- 7:54Speaker 3: I think it's abundantly clear they need to make a
- 7:57Speaker 3: move at this point. I don't think you can just
- 7:59Speaker 3: throw the US all on Kobe Mayo.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely. I like like Steve kind of art.
- 8:04Speaker 5: Maybe maybe it is a true who knows, Maybe it's
- 8:06Speaker 5: some kind of minor trade where somebody stuck in triple
- 8:08Speaker 5: A behind somebody and they just make a minor move
- 8:11Speaker 5: here before the deadline.
- 8:12Speaker 4: I don't really know.
- 8:13Speaker 5: But to me, the value of Blazer is that you
- 8:15Speaker 5: can move them all over the place, and I don't
- 8:16Speaker 5: know if the guys they have in the minor leagues
- 8:19Speaker 5: can do that, and that's where you lose value with
- 8:21Speaker 5: him going down. Also, if you need to get Gunner
- 8:23Speaker 5: off his feet for one game, Blaze was very able
- 8:26Speaker 5: to step in a shortstop as well. You can play
- 8:28Speaker 5: second base. We've seen it in the outfield. So it's
- 8:30Speaker 5: it's a it's a multiple kind of thing that you're
- 8:34Speaker 5: going to try to have to replace here. Yes, you
- 8:36Speaker 5: have the four days, but it's kind of looking at
- 8:37Speaker 5: your rosters and I just don't know if they have
- 8:39Speaker 5: that guy anywhere in their system right now.
- 8:41Speaker 4: So it's just an unfortunate situation.
- 8:44Speaker 5: But I'm sure, you know, they always have emergency plans
- 8:47Speaker 5: on their on their minds and everything, so I'm sure
- 8:49Speaker 5: they'll come up with an idea. But yeah, I agree
- 8:51Speaker 5: with to him with you, you got to find somebody
- 8:52Speaker 5: who can hit right hand and pitching at their base.
- 8:54Speaker 5: I don't know if Kobe Mayo is at that point
- 8:57Speaker 5: right now to play every day, but they're gonna have
- 8:58Speaker 5: to figure something out here fairly soon.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Let's tip our cap to Blaze. Alexander. What addition he
- 9:07Speaker 1: has been. Three twelve is padding average. We don't see
- 9:11Speaker 1: three hundred in the big leagues much anymore. Eight oh
- 9:13Speaker 1: seven is his ops. As you guys said, versatility is
- 9:17Speaker 1: there beyond that. He is energy in that clubhouse. I'm
- 9:22Speaker 1: telling you you feel his energy at four o'clock when
- 9:24Speaker 1: you're in there, and I know they darn well feel
- 9:27Speaker 1: it at seven. And when those guys get to where
- 9:30Speaker 1: they're going tonight, everybody's scattering for the break. They're gonna
- 9:34Speaker 1: sit down and they're all gonna say, damn, I cannot
- 9:36Speaker 1: believe we lost the energy on this team.
- 9:40Speaker 3: That And I'm telling you and someone that can come
- 9:42Speaker 3: through in big time moments. Guys, his batting average with
- 9:46Speaker 3: runners and scoring positions since May first is four sixty two.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Those are video game numbers. You can't even do that
- 9:54Speaker 3: in MLB. The show like this is a big time
- 9:57Speaker 3: player for them, and like Brad said, this isn't just
- 10:00Speaker 3: a third basement. We've seen him play in the outfit.
- 10:02Speaker 3: We've seen him play every single position pretty much this season.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Besides him putting the catcher's equipment on seemingly it's just
- 10:10Speaker 3: he also just seems like such a great teammate as well,
- 10:13Speaker 3: and guys that you know really rally behind and like
- 10:17Speaker 3: play him with.
- 10:19Speaker 5: Yeah, he's he's a gamer without a doubt. You can
- 10:21Speaker 5: see that. I don't have to be in the clubhouse
- 10:23Speaker 5: to know. I watched on the TV and you can
- 10:25Speaker 5: just tell when he does something, they're all excited. Everybody
- 10:28Speaker 5: gets excited for when guys do well. There's guys that
- 10:31Speaker 5: everyone gets excited for, and he's one of those guys
- 10:33Speaker 5: on this team. It's very easy to see and it
- 10:35Speaker 5: comes across on the TV just watching it when we
- 10:37Speaker 5: watch the games.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Also, this is a guy that when reporters go up
- 10:42Speaker 1: to interview him and you walk away, he shakes, He
- 10:44Speaker 1: grabs your hand to shake it. He just as just
- 10:47Speaker 1: as a polite and available and engaging guy as has
- 10:51Speaker 1: maybe ever been in there. And that's a long list
- 10:53Speaker 1: of guys we could put there, and so my heart
- 10:57Speaker 1: breaks for him, But I think we're gonna see him
- 10:59Speaker 1: again and the team has to pick up the slack.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Who would have thought we'd be talking about like the
- 11:04Speaker 1: NBO that's what he feels like. It feels like the
- 11:06Speaker 1: most valuable player on this team, which if they had
- 11:09Speaker 1: to take that vote today, he'd be on a lot
- 11:11Speaker 1: of pallets.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Yeah, well just think of all the names. Guys like
- 11:17Speaker 3: Brandon Young would be way up that list as well.
- 11:20Speaker 3: And we were talking about this on the show on
- 11:23Speaker 3: the Fan last week, like when you think a Gunner
- 11:25Speaker 3: Henderson and how far behind he'd be, you know, like
- 11:29Speaker 3: a Brandon Young, a Blaze, Alexander As, Samuel Bissio and
- 11:33Speaker 3: and all these There's been so many great surprises on
- 11:36Speaker 3: this team, and I think that's what's so frustrating Leodi
- 11:40Speaker 3: Taveras today. I know he hadn't had an RBI in
- 11:43Speaker 3: a while, but three big RBIs how big was he
- 11:46Speaker 3: in the month of April? Jeremiah Jackson drove in a run?
- 11:48Speaker 3: How big was he in the month of April. They've
- 11:51Speaker 3: had so many of these cool stories, but Blaze being
- 11:55Speaker 3: at the top.
- 11:57Speaker 1: I want to touch on a lot of things in
- 11:59Speaker 1: this show Go Anywhere. If you're watching Why the Ools
- 12:03Speaker 1: won four in a row?
- 12:04Speaker 2: What went right?
- 12:04Speaker 1: We're gonna touch on that their offense came to life
- 12:07Speaker 1: in this series. The attendance was really good this weekend
- 12:11Speaker 1: for two teams with losing records, and I think we
- 12:14Speaker 1: should note that, and we will, And what are the
- 12:16Speaker 1: Ools need to do coming out of the break, big
- 12:19Speaker 1: road trip to Houston and Boston.
- 12:20Speaker 2: We're going to touch on that too.
- 12:22Speaker 1: A lot to do as we roll on today here
- 12:24Speaker 1: on Birdland Territory.
- 12:31Speaker 3: We are at the All Star break and are you
- 12:33Speaker 3: thinking of driving up to Philly for the Home Run

- 13:49Speaker 6: Thank you Sea Geek.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Well, Tim, we got to get to that that you
- 13:54Speaker 1: were as I push some buttons here as you were
- 13:58Speaker 1: at the game today in Philadelphia and then you came
- 14:01Speaker 1: back to Baltimore area so we could tape our show.
- 14:04Speaker 1: So for the Oriols today, ike Iris show. For one,
- 14:06Speaker 1: he had a strikeout.
- 14:07Speaker 2: On a walk.
- 14:08Speaker 1: We did not see the lefty Jerwan until the last inning.
- 14:12Speaker 1: He got one bat or two pitches he got him out.
- 14:15Speaker 1: So not big big day for oriole prospects. But what
- 14:19Speaker 1: was it like being at the futures game today?
- 14:21Speaker 6: It was awesome.
- 14:22Speaker 3: That was my first time I've ever gone to the
- 14:25Speaker 3: futures game. My dad he went to the futures game,
- 14:27Speaker 3: I believe back in twenty nineteen when DC hosted the
- 14:31Speaker 3: All Star Game. That was my first time at the
- 14:34Speaker 3: Phillies Ballpark. What an awesome ballpark. And then they got
- 14:37Speaker 3: this new little complex open up because obviously all.
- 14:42Speaker 6: Three of their stadium's arenas are there. But there's this sort.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Of battery light with the Braves have going on with
- 14:49Speaker 3: all these outdoor bars and restaurants, and it was really neat.
- 14:52Speaker 6: But the game itself really cool. Adam Jones was there.
- 14:55Speaker 3: He was a part of the American League coaching staff
- 14:59Speaker 3: and he got an standing oh as did Jurua and
- 15:02Speaker 3: Ike Irish when they got introduced. But it's really cool,
- 15:06Speaker 3: man Like. It's been an event that Orioles fans in
- 15:10Speaker 3: particular have kept an eye on over the years just
- 15:14Speaker 3: because gosh, their farm system was so loaded for so long,
- 15:17Speaker 3: and you'd see so many of these guys in this
- 15:19Speaker 3: Futures Game.
- 15:20Speaker 6: But it was awesome to be there. It was definitely,
- 15:22Speaker 6: really really cool.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Here's my twenty second editorial and I'll move on. I
- 15:29Speaker 1: don't think Major League Baseball is doing right by its
- 15:31Speaker 1: young miller. The Futures Game needs a.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Standalone own night itself.
- 15:37Speaker 1: This is the store building them the stars of the future,
- 15:40Speaker 1: so where they're playing while the Draft is going on
- 15:43Speaker 1: and MLB games. I had needed six TVs in here
- 15:47Speaker 1: today to try to follow and track everything going on,
- 15:50Speaker 1: updating my Twitter and my substack, the Twitter, the Futures game,
- 15:53Speaker 1: the Draft, and the Orioles. Other than that, quiet, why
- 15:56Speaker 1: can't we give these kids some more of a bigger form.
- 15:59Speaker 2: That's just my which went longer than that.
- 16:03Speaker 3: I know I'm gonna piggyback off that for a second, Steve,
- 16:05Speaker 3: because you're so right, and there were so many things
- 16:08Speaker 3: that MLB could do better, and this just seems like
- 16:11Speaker 3: a layup right the All Star week outside of the
- 16:14Speaker 3: home run derby and the game, of course, it's the
- 16:17Speaker 3: most dead week on the sports calendar all year long.
- 16:20Speaker 3: There's no games, there's nothing on Wednesday and Thursday. Have
- 16:25Speaker 3: it during one of those days. Have the draft on
- 16:27Speaker 3: during one of those days. We had our buddy Jim
- 16:30Speaker 3: Kallis on a couple of weeks ago, and we loved
- 16:32Speaker 3: Jim and got it with such a fun episode. And
- 16:34Speaker 3: you haven't watched it, You one hundred percent should go
- 16:36Speaker 3: back and watch it. But when Jim was trying to explain,
- 16:39Speaker 3: all right, it's this channel for the first ten picks
- 16:43Speaker 3: and then it's this app for the.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Next It's what I think.
- 16:46Speaker 6: It's complicated, man, just having it one spot.
- 16:51Speaker 4: Yeah, it's crazy, you know sometimes less you know.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I'm watching the draft. They do ten rounds today with
- 16:59Speaker 1: the analyst Alison. Those guys are doing a great job.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Then you're gone.
- 17:03Speaker 1: They're not there for eleven through twenty, and they wait
- 17:05Speaker 1: an hour so they get your love. I don't know
- 17:08Speaker 1: who drew this up, but they might have been an
- 17:10Speaker 1: happy hour when they put it on an actor or something,
- 17:12Speaker 1: and they need dating to work on this. MLB could
- 17:15Speaker 1: be doing better by its too talent than what they're
- 17:18Speaker 1: doing right now. We digress back to Birdland, where the
- 17:22Speaker 1: Oils have won four in a row.
- 17:24Speaker 2: This is the rocky road they've been on.
- 17:26Speaker 1: They won three in a row, they lost three in
- 17:27Speaker 1: a row, they won four in a row. So they're
- 17:29Speaker 1: seven and three in July. They're giving some hope here.
- 17:33Speaker 1: I know Oriil fans are saying, you suck me back
- 17:35Speaker 1: in again. I'll be watching Friday Night now and they're
- 17:39Speaker 1: two outs in this wild card behind a couple teams.
- 17:43Speaker 1: I've asked this question a dozen times of you guys
- 17:45Speaker 1: will ask it again, Are they finally getting this thing going?
- 17:52Speaker 5: I honestly feel this might be the first time they
- 17:55Speaker 5: I feel like they actually might be gaining some momentimum
- 17:57Speaker 5: might be able to carry. I say that because the
- 18:00Speaker 5: offense is doing what we kind of had thought and
- 18:02Speaker 5: hoped that they would do. They're hitting home runs, the
- 18:04Speaker 5: starting pitching has been consistent, and it just feels different.
- 18:08Speaker 5: This weekend felt different than the previous three game win streaks.
- 18:12Speaker 5: And I don't know what it was, And even Ben
- 18:14Speaker 5: McDonald today was talking about it on the broadcast. It
- 18:16Speaker 5: just the park felt different and the team's energy just
- 18:19Speaker 5: seemed different. I can't put my finger on exactly what
- 18:22Speaker 5: it was, but it just felt like a different weekend.
- 18:24Speaker 4: He said. Maybe the Royals had something to do with it.
- 18:26Speaker 5: The record was not as good, but still a win
- 18:28Speaker 5: is a win, and four wins in a row and
- 18:30Speaker 5: the major leagues is still good. And they finally got
- 18:32Speaker 5: off of that two team list that they were stuck on.
- 18:35Speaker 5: The only two teams left to not have a four
- 18:37Speaker 5: game win streak, So going into the also break, this
- 18:39Speaker 5: is really all you could ask for. They had four
- 18:40Speaker 5: games left to go, they won all four of them,
- 18:43Speaker 5: and they have some momentum going whether coming out of
- 18:45Speaker 5: the four day break is tough because everyone kind of resets,
- 18:49Speaker 5: so you're coming out facing everybody's a game from the beginning.
- 18:52Speaker 5: You have your best starters and all your relievers rested,
- 18:54Speaker 5: and it's a different feel the first couple games out
- 18:57Speaker 5: of the break. But they have a momentum and hopefully
- 18:59Speaker 5: when they come in on front, they can just continue
- 19:01Speaker 5: what they did this weekend because that was complete baseball,
- 19:03Speaker 5: and that's what I think the fans expected when this
- 19:05Speaker 5: season started.
- 19:07Speaker 6: That's the biggest thing.
- 19:08Speaker 3: I mean, you could certainly make the case that this
- 19:11Speaker 3: was their most complete series that they've had in quite
- 19:13Speaker 3: some time. I believe it's their first series sweep since
- 19:17Speaker 3: they swept the Rays late May around Memorial Day.
- 19:20Speaker 6: Look part of it.
- 19:21Speaker 3: Like you said, Brad, the Royals are having a really
- 19:24Speaker 3: tough year, There's no doubt about it, and their pitching just
- 19:27Speaker 3: has not been up the snuff. The lineup, but the
- 19:30Speaker 3: Orioles they took advantage, and they took advantage of the
- 19:33Speaker 3: Royals mistakes, especially today. Gunner Henderson three hits today, He's
- 19:39Speaker 3: hitting a ball hard. I know that hasn't always resulted
- 19:42Speaker 3: in the best of luck. Even over these past couple
- 19:44Speaker 3: of days, he's looked a little bit different.
- 19:46Speaker 6: I'm not ready to say they're back yet. I think
- 19:50Speaker 6: that you know.
- 19:50Speaker 3: We've seen this so many times, guys, but Steve just
- 19:55Speaker 3: flashed up the schedule and look at the next four series.
- 20:01Speaker 3: I think the next four series are really going to
- 20:03Speaker 3: determine how mich Elias is going to approach this deadline.
- 20:07Speaker 3: So it's at Houston, at Boston, two teams that are
- 20:10Speaker 3: ahead of you and the wildcard race. The Braves come
- 20:13Speaker 3: to town and obviously the Braves are having a great, great season,
- 20:17Speaker 3: and then you head to Detroit to take on the Tigers,
- 20:20Speaker 3: and the Tigers are right around the Orioles. I think
- 20:23Speaker 3: they're a game behind them in the wildcard standing. So
- 20:26Speaker 3: three of your next four series, which by the way,
- 20:28Speaker 3: three of those four against the American League teams fighting
- 20:31Speaker 3: for wildcard, all on the road, where the Orioles have
- 20:35Speaker 3: struggled this year. If they're able to start stacking some
- 20:38Speaker 3: series wins there and gaining some ground on some teams,
- 20:42Speaker 3: then I can really buy in. But this is a
- 20:45Speaker 3: great run into the All Star break. It's a run
- 20:48Speaker 3: that they absolutely needed. And Hey, even just looking at
- 20:52Speaker 3: the homestand as a whole four and two homestand if
- 20:56Speaker 3: you would have told Orioles fans that heading into this
- 20:59Speaker 3: six game home stand, you go four and two heading
- 21:02Speaker 3: into the break, everyone would have taken it.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Now they need a four and two road trip coming
- 21:09Speaker 2: out and break. Win at Houston, win at Boston.
- 21:11Speaker 1: If they can do that, they'll get more believers than
- 21:14Speaker 1: they have at this minute. They'll cut more games under
- 21:17Speaker 1: five hundred, and they may even get closer than two
- 21:19Speaker 1: games to the wild card. They might be right there
- 21:21Speaker 1: on the doorstep. This season is salvageable because the American
- 21:25Speaker 1: League opponents are making it that way. For the Orioles,
- 21:28Speaker 1: they just keep giving them chance after chance after chance,
- 21:32Speaker 1: and maybe this is the time they're actually going to
- 21:34Speaker 1: take it and run with it. There was a lot
- 21:37Speaker 1: of folks in the stands this weekend. We want to
- 21:40Speaker 1: touch on that coming up next on Birdland Territory.

- 22:45Speaker 1: The three game attendance Orioles Royals at the Yard this
- 22:48Speaker 1: weekend was eighty seven thousand and three six, about twenty
- 22:52Speaker 1: nine per game. They were promotions. There was the drone
- 22:56Speaker 1: show after the game Saturday night, which looked great highlights.
- 22:59Speaker 1: I saw there to see it in person. But I'm
- 23:03Speaker 1: not selling this as anything at all, except there are
- 23:07Speaker 1: two things that draw on right now, Birdland promotions and weekends.
- 23:11Speaker 1: You get those two together. The Yankees don't have to
- 23:13Speaker 1: be there for fans to come in the stands. This
- 23:15Speaker 1: weekend shows that the Royals have one of the worst
- 23:18Speaker 1: records in baseball, but it was still nice to be
- 23:21Speaker 1: the see and you guys have already referred to the energy.
- 23:23Speaker 1: The players have noted it. Ben McDonald noted it, and
- 23:26Speaker 1: it makes a difference.
- 23:28Speaker 4: Yeah, big time. I mean, there's a reason why they
- 23:30Speaker 4: have home field advantage.
- 23:31Speaker 5: And when the when there's nothing like kam the Yards,
- 23:34Speaker 5: when it's packed and there's there's people in the stands,
- 23:37Speaker 5: doesn't matter your record. Like you said, it doesn't matter
- 23:39Speaker 5: who you're playing, doesn't matter where the Orioles record. It's
- 23:42Speaker 5: a great place to be. It's a It makes the
- 23:44Speaker 5: atmosphere electric. The noise is so loud when you when
- 23:47Speaker 5: something big happens, it sounds like a gunshot went off.
- 23:50Speaker 4: When when it's when it's packed like that.
- 23:52Speaker 5: It was always my favorite when a Friday, Saturday Sunday
- 23:54Speaker 5: series came in and you had, you know, just just
- 23:57Speaker 5: energy in the stands. It just makes the game that
- 23:59Speaker 5: much more exciting and the players are more into it,
- 24:01Speaker 5: and it's it's awesome having the fans behind you, and
- 24:04Speaker 5: it gives you that little extraute boost when you need it,
- 24:06Speaker 5: and that's when the Orioles needed it this weekend and
- 24:08Speaker 5: they really got it. I think the fans really helped
- 24:10Speaker 5: provide that for them and.
- 24:12Speaker 4: Kind of get them over that home.
- 24:13Speaker 5: Maybe they'll run off ten games in a row now
- 24:15Speaker 5: that they got past the three mark here.
- 24:16Speaker 4: You just never know.
- 24:17Speaker 5: So that was it was cool to see that many
- 24:19Speaker 5: people in the stands and you could tell the players
- 24:21Speaker 5: reacted to it.
- 24:21Speaker 4: So it was it was a great weekend all around.
- 24:24Speaker 6: It's awesome.
- 24:25Speaker 3: It's awesome when Camden Yards is packed, and obviously the
- 24:28Speaker 3: Orioles just have such great fans, but also a lot
- 24:31Speaker 3: of cool moments, man like Samuel Bissio with the go ahead,
- 24:35Speaker 3: two run homer.
- 24:36Speaker 6: On Friday, throwing the bat like that was awesome.
- 24:39Speaker 3: And Saturday, I think Craig Albernaz was saying in his
- 24:43Speaker 3: postgame presser he was, man, this was the most energy,
- 24:47Speaker 3: the most juice. This uh fans the stadium has had
- 24:51Speaker 3: since opening day, and and I.
- 24:53Speaker 6: Thought that that was telling.
- 24:54Speaker 3: You know that the the players definitely recognized it. Craig
- 24:58Speaker 3: Alberna has definitely recognized it. I do want to give
- 25:00Speaker 3: one shout out though. One of the highlights of the weekend. Guys,
- 25:03Speaker 3: I'm sure you saw it on masson the one hundred
- 25:06Speaker 3: three year old World War two vet who did the
- 25:09Speaker 3: anthem on Saturday?
- 25:11Speaker 2: Are you kidding me? Like that was the coolest thing ever?
- 25:14Speaker 6: One hundred three is standing up getting into it. I
- 25:17Speaker 6: thought that was awesome.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:19Speaker 1: The oil's honor military every night, every home again eighty
- 25:22Speaker 1: one he won this year there will be a military
- 25:25Speaker 1: honoree and that's awesome. His poor movie, very very exciting
- 25:29Speaker 1: for the fans. A couple quick notes from the game today.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Leonti Taveres hit one four forty eight, Oh, by the way,
- 25:35Speaker 1: furthest of his career. Second farthest bine oil. Kobe Mayo
- 25:39Speaker 1: hit one four point fifty two in April at KC.
- 25:43Speaker 1: And how about this note, Pete Alonzo sixty fifth rbi today,
- 25:47Speaker 1: the most fine oil at the break since Manny.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Machado in twenty eighteen. That snuck up as fast.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and this guy's just been mister dependable ever since
- 25:56Speaker 1: the first few weeks.
- 25:59Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, it's like an avalanche.
- 26:01Speaker 5: It's not like it's just a snowball that just keeps
- 26:03Speaker 5: going and you don't realize it at the time when
- 26:06Speaker 5: you're watching series by series or month by month, but
- 26:08Speaker 5: also you look up and like I said back in April,
- 26:11Speaker 5: I think, like playing with him, the numbers are going
- 26:13Speaker 5: to be there. You just know what to expect when
- 26:15Speaker 5: this guy's on the field, and he might go through stretches.
- 26:18Speaker 5: I mean all power hitters go through those stretches where
- 26:20Speaker 5: they might not seem like they're driving runs or this
- 26:22Speaker 5: or that, but he picks up his runs as it
- 26:24Speaker 5: goes along. And I mean he's at twenty something home
- 26:27Speaker 5: runs too, which doesn't seem like he's hit that many
- 26:29Speaker 5: too also, but it's just the numbers are there. Somehow
- 26:33Speaker 5: over time they got there. But it's impressive. Sixty five
- 26:35Speaker 5: before the break the most since Manny in twenty eighteen
- 26:38Speaker 5: is not a small number. It means he's going to
- 26:40Speaker 5: get close to one hundred if he doesn't get past it.
- 26:42Speaker 4: So that's great to see.
- 26:44Speaker 3: And Pete, you can you do the same split that
- 26:47Speaker 3: you do with Blaze Alexander. Since May first guys, heading
- 26:52Speaker 3: into today, Pete Alonso had fifty one RBIs second most
- 26:56Speaker 3: in all of baseball, second most, and his ops over
- 27:00Speaker 3: nine hundred those first couple of weeks of the season,
- 27:04Speaker 3: and thinking that presser, meet him, meet with the media
- 27:07Speaker 3: after that Giants game coming up short, you know how
- 27:10Speaker 3: emotional he was.
- 27:12Speaker 4: I feel like that was the.
- 27:13Speaker 3: Turnaround for him. Ever since then, he's just been on
- 27:15Speaker 3: a tarror. He's been Pete Alonzo.
- 27:19Speaker 2: We come back.
- 27:19Speaker 1: I want to give one more note on Pete hat tip,
- 27:23Speaker 1: although I'm not wearing one currently, and one more note
- 27:26Speaker 1: on the Oriel Bullpen sneaking up one of some of
- 27:28Speaker 1: these stats in a minute here on Birdland Territory.
- 27:33Speaker 9: Big Bad Morning Show Vinnie and Haiti Inside Access Live
- 27:37Speaker 9: on YouTube weekdays six till six, search Baltimore one O
- 27:41Speaker 9: five seven the Fan, Subscribe for daily shorts right to
- 27:44Speaker 9: your phone, and never missed what you missed one O
- 27:47Speaker 9: five seven the Fan.
- 27:51Speaker 1: So this will mean much to people outside of the media,
- 27:54Speaker 1: but if you're in the oil club ass as much
- 27:56Speaker 1: as I am. On Friday, Pete Alonzo had six consecutive reporters, radio, television,
- 28:05Speaker 1: print approach him consecutively, taking up about half the time
- 28:10Speaker 1: of the clubhouse was open, and he had time for
- 28:12Speaker 1: everybody who came up to him. People from Kansas City,
- 28:15Speaker 1: people from Baltimore, people from outside both cities. They just
- 28:20Speaker 1: kept hitting this guy up for interviews. And I almost
- 28:22Speaker 1: wanted to go over, and I'm like, I'm not going
- 28:24Speaker 1: to right now. The guy's been talking to guys for
- 28:25Speaker 1: a half hour. I could give him a break, and
- 28:28Speaker 1: so I just I just say thank you for that.
- 28:31Speaker 1: As a media guy, though, that's above and beyond the call,
- 28:35Speaker 1: you almost feel like you want to go up to
- 28:37Speaker 1: your media partners and go, can we give this guy's
- 28:39Speaker 1: been talking to people for an hour here and you
- 28:41Speaker 1: let him be ready for the game. But they kept
- 28:43Speaker 1: coming and he kept greeting them so tremendous. I mean,
- 28:47Speaker 1: for media guy, that's all you ask. And he's the
- 28:50Speaker 1: biggest name in there, and he has time for everybody.
- 28:53Speaker 1: You're a bullpen guys eight and two thirds scoreless this weekend.
- 28:58Speaker 1: The last eleven games are two forty eight. Here they
- 29:01Speaker 1: go again, getting some things together at a time the
- 29:04Speaker 1: team really needs it. The pitching by the way, during
- 29:06Speaker 1: the four game win streak, gave up eight runs, seven earned,
- 29:09Speaker 1: and five walks thirty two strikeouts.
- 29:12Speaker 2: So them, some things really came together.
- 29:14Speaker 1: Yes, against a bad team, but don't forget they beat
- 29:17Speaker 1: the Dodgers and the Yankees and the Rains too. They're
- 29:19Speaker 1: showing us what they could be. They've given hope for
- 29:23Speaker 1: the All Star Break.
- 29:25Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely. I mean that's all you can ask for.
- 29:27Speaker 5: It's it's like I said, this series kind of had
- 29:29Speaker 5: a little bit of everything. You have, bullpen, pitching, starting pitching, hitting,
- 29:32Speaker 5: It all kind of came together. This is this is
- 29:34Speaker 5: the pieces that we've seen at times and they just
- 29:36Speaker 5: haven't lined up. You just got to hope that now's
- 29:39Speaker 5: the time it lines up. And like we said, they're
- 29:41Speaker 5: facing Houston and Boston, two teams that are ahead of
- 29:43Speaker 5: them here in the Wildcard. It's huge series right after
- 29:45Speaker 5: the break, and it's it's it's gonna show whether like
- 29:48Speaker 5: we had a show about last week the trade deadline.
- 29:50Speaker 5: This this is I know we've mentioned it for a
- 29:52Speaker 5: couple weeks now, but it's it's it's now or ever.
- 29:55Speaker 5: It's if you get swept by Houston that puts you
- 29:58Speaker 5: three games behind them, worse ahead of them, and the
- 30:00Speaker 5: Red Sox right now have one nine in a row.
- 30:02Speaker 5: So it's like it's just everybody's kind of finding their
- 30:06Speaker 5: stride and the Orioles are finding it maybe with them,
- 30:08Speaker 5: so it's it's it could be a battle here, and
- 30:10Speaker 5: thankfully the standings haven't gotten away from them and they're
- 30:13Speaker 5: still in it statistically in the standing, so it's it's
- 30:15Speaker 5: an exciting time and it's great to have all three
- 30:17Speaker 5: phases kind of going to the same time, which we
- 30:20Speaker 5: have not seen yet this year.
- 30:22Speaker 3: I think that what's even more impressive about the Bullpen
- 30:25Speaker 3: guys is the fact that Ryan Hellslan, Keegan Ake and
- 30:28Speaker 3: have both been sidelined for quite some time. And Aken
- 30:32Speaker 3: it doesn't sound great. I know he got the second
- 30:34Speaker 3: opinion on his elbow. I know Hellsley he got a
- 30:37Speaker 3: better prognosis over the weekend. It sounds like he's gonna
- 30:41Speaker 3: be out for a while, but maybe avoids Tommy John surgery.
- 30:44Speaker 3: But the Bullpens showing up big even though they were undermanned,
- 30:48Speaker 3: I think that that's even more impressive.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Good note to end the last show of the first half,
- 30:56Speaker 1: but we have a lot more coming up. Including this week.
- 30:58Speaker 1: During the break, we won't be going anywhere. Even while
- 31:01Speaker 1: MLB takes a few days off, we'll still have shows
- 31:04Speaker 1: coming your way. So the Birds are forty six and
- 31:07Speaker 1: fifty one. That's show you how such a fine line
- 31:09Speaker 1: it is. You come out of the break of two
- 31:11Speaker 1: and four, that's a buzzkill. You go four and two.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Now you're charging towards something that little difference in a
