- 0:00Welcome to Frontline Static, a podcast that helps bridge the
- 0:03gap between healthcare workers and 1st responders and
- 0:05everything in between. I am so excited to share with
- 0:12you an interview that I had with two of my clients.
- 0:15They have ER and ICU background and they got into flight.
- 0:18They talk about what it was like to have coaching and mentoring
- 0:21along the way of doing the application, the interviews and
- 0:25then accepting the offers and now being in orientation and
- 0:29coming off of orientation. They talk about the common
- 0:31struggles that both of them faced during that whole process
- 0:34and where the struggles are that they're facing now.
- 0:37And I just hope that you can get some little Nuggets and
- 0:40strategies from how to go through this process and what
- 0:44coaching and mentoring can do for you.
- 0:45My philosophy is definitely different than anything that
- 0:48you've heard out there on how to get hired into the flight realm,
- 0:51and I just so appreciate both of them trusting me and allowing me
- 0:57to be a part of this process for them.
- 0:59And I'm just so proud of the work that they've done and the
- 1:02work that they continue to do for this industry.
- 1:04So without further ado, here is my interview with Floricella and
- 1:09Amanda Okay today. I have a very special podcast.
- 1:17I am interviewing two of my actually current clients, which
- 1:21is awesome, Floricella and Amanda.
- 1:24And both of them came to me with very different backgrounds and
- 1:29got into flight. So I thought today we would just
- 1:32take the opportunity to answer some questions that I think
- 1:35common questions that come up for people who are trying to get
- 1:38into it and then kind of just ask you some questions as being
- 1:42a new off of orientation and six months in and all of those kinds
- 1:47of things that I think a lot of people don't think about the
- 1:49challenges that come with that. So we'll kind of talk about
- 1:52that. So let's just start with
- 1:53introducing who you guys are. And I know both of you guys have
- 1:57been on the podcast before, but we'll start with who you are and
- 2:01kind of like where you are in that track right now.
- 2:03So Amanda, if you want to start introducing yourself 1st, that
- 2:06would be great. Sure.
- 2:07So I am about two months in into starting flight nursing.
- 2:12So this is very new to me in this process.
- 2:15Background wise, I came from ICUED experience, been a nurse
- 2:18about five years. So that's kind of the whole bit
- 2:24of the nursing. And so everything's been a
- 2:26little scary, but good on the flight nursing for me.
- 2:30All right, awesome. So two months and you said just
- 2:32came off of orientation, we're still doing orientation.
- 2:36Yeah. Our orientation's like six
- 2:37months long. So great, great.
- 2:40All right. Florisella, tell us about you.
- 2:43Yes. So my name is Coricela.
- 2:44I've been a nurse for about 5 years now.
- 2:46I started in the ICU and that's kind of where I left off.
- 2:50Surgical ICU in West TX, very rural setting and we we took
- 2:57care of patients from all of. Eastern New Mexico.
- 3:01So it's a very rural area. I kind of have patients from all
- 3:03over. I've also been flying probably
- 3:07for about 5 months now. I wish my orientation was six
- 3:13months. I think that's really nice.
- 3:17But so far it's been going great.
- 3:20I also have my paramedic. I've had that for almost a year
- 3:24now. Well, it'll be in December, but
- 3:26so I've had my paramedic and I volunteer here and the small
- 3:29community that I live in when I when I have a chance.
- 3:32So that's that's me. Yeah, awesome.
- 3:35I want to talk about, I think, you know, maybe just going
- 3:40through the process. Of getting onto flight with you
- 3:43guys was it harder, easier just what you expected like what was
- 3:49your as far as like your expectation and how it really?
- 3:51Was for you. How was that experience for you?
- 3:57So I I never thought I was ready.
- 4:03And it was kind of a constant argument in my head where like,
- 4:06OK, you still need more experience.
- 4:09You still need more experience. And even other people like, you
- 4:11know, going on rideons like, hey, you, you should have more
- 4:14experience. But the problem was for me, like
- 4:18I come from a big city, big city hospitals, and I feel like
- 4:22sometimes that is not a good thing.
- 4:24Because there's so many, there's so many specialties that there's
- 4:27only so much that you can learn and so much responsibility that
- 4:31you can have as a nurse. And that's something that I
- 4:33bring to my base too, that I tell them like, hey, don't be
- 4:36fooled by my resume, I know things.
- 4:37But you probably see more in sicker patients at rural
- 4:40hospitals. So in my head this is also my
- 4:44personality too, where I either. Go all out or nothing.
- 4:49So I think it was that moment where I was at bedside and just
- 4:52really sick of it one day and just saying, like, hey, you know
- 4:54what, I want to push myself to learn and I want also other
- 4:58people to want to push me to learn.
- 5:00So it was very, very hard to get to that point of actually
- 5:05putting that application. And even though it was like a
- 5:07couple clicks, you know, but it was really hard, I thought that
- 5:10was actually the hardest part to actually tell myself you're
- 5:12going to apply for this because what's the worst that can
- 5:14happen? So.
- 5:17I surprised myself because I didn't realize I was going to
- 5:19get interviews. So the interview process wasn't
- 5:22wasn't horrible for me. I enjoy interviews and I also
- 5:25had your guidance in it and then came orientation.
- 5:29So I think. The orientation part and also
- 5:33applying was the hardest part for me.
- 5:34I also like, I don't have EMS experience either.
- 5:37So that part has been a struggle for me.
- 5:39Just getting used to that and the autonomy of it, Yeah, What
- 5:42was it like before we move on to Floor Cell and her experience?
- 5:45What was it for you that clicked that was like, Because I think
- 5:50for most people who are trying to get into it, they think about
- 5:55it for years, right? They're like, and then there's
- 5:58that thought that's stopping them.
- 5:59And for you it was, I don't have enough experience.
- 6:01So what was it, that one thing that clicked for you that was
- 6:04like, no, I'm going for it, even though you were nervous about
- 6:07it? Mine was.
- 6:09I had an experience at the hospital I was working with and
- 6:14you know, I'm, I would say I'm pretty independent and wanting
- 6:17to learn and grasp what I want for my career.
- 6:21So I so I asked like, okay every time I ask a question like, oh,
- 6:24teach me about this, What resources do I have?
- 6:27The answer was always, you know, you could look up an article,
- 6:31but it doesn't really matter. You don't have to know it.
- 6:34And that was my trigger. And Nope, that's not acceptable
- 6:38for me personally. I I'm not ready for school.
- 6:41I don't at this point don't think that's what I want.
- 6:44So that was my push of you know what?
- 6:46No, I need something different. I need that change I mean.
- 6:49I felt comfortable enough at bedside that I I knew it wasn't
- 6:53the right place for me anymore. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:55No, great. Great.
- 6:58All right. How about you, Farshella?
- 7:01Yeah, it's hard to like, think back for that.
- 7:03I know it seems like a lot has happened since then.
- 7:06Yeah, it really does feel that way.
- 7:09I feel like kind of piggybacking off what Amanda said.
- 7:12I think the hardest part was trying to tell myself that I was
- 7:15ready because I I know when I first reached out to you, I was
- 7:19more so just like, OK, so let me get my ducks in a row so that I
- 7:24can start heading in that direction versus.
- 7:28You need to apply right now. And I was like, no, I don't, I'm
- 7:31not ready for it. I come, I mean I've been in the
- 7:34ICU for five years, but it's a, it's a very hard environment and
- 7:39I definitely don't feel like I have the confidence to to go out
- 7:43and be autonomous and start taking care of some of these
- 7:46sick patients and you know, with just one partner.
- 7:50So I just don't definitely don't feel like I had it in me and I
- 7:54thought that. Applying was just going to be
- 7:57like, well, I'll just learn from this experience and I'll apply
- 8:02later because I definitely didn't think I'd get a phone
- 8:04call or an interview or a job offering.
- 8:08So that's kind of where I'm at. And that was, that was hard,
- 8:12just trying to push yourself to apply.
- 8:13But like Amanda said, with your guidance, I think that probably
- 8:18helped push me as well, just because I don't feel like I was
- 8:22ready for it at all. Yeah.
- 8:24What's interesting is that most all of my clients that want to
- 8:27get on the flight, they start their initial conversation with
- 8:30me like okay, what are the steps I need to do to kind of prepare
- 8:33for it? And almost every conversation I
- 8:35know it was that that way with you two.
- 8:38I get on the first call with you guys and I'm like, you're ready.
- 8:40What are, what are we waiting for?
- 8:42Like what is it that we're waiting for?
- 8:44So you know, I I agree like that's the biggest hurdle for a
- 8:49lot of people is they feel like they're not experienced or they
- 8:51haven't seen enough. So as we're talking about now
- 8:55the application process, my philosophy is to put in a ton of
- 8:59applications so that you can put yourself out there and really
- 9:04you know you're interviewing them as they're interviewing
- 9:07you. And So what I always have my
- 9:10clients do is put in as many places that they're willing to
- 9:12go and then we rank them. And I would say 90% of the time
- 9:17what they're ranked as number one, they don't end up picking
- 9:21because as they're going through the application process, they
- 9:24realize like, oh, I really like this aspect about #2 or #3
- 9:28better. So for you guys, I know that,
- 9:32and this is usually what happens, once you push click and
- 9:35then you push click on the other applications, things start
- 9:38happening. People start reaching out,
- 9:40recruiters, tests, interviews, all these things.
- 9:43So how was that process for you guys as far as your ranking and
- 9:47where you ended up landing? So funny story about that.
- 9:53I think I for me, personally, I didn't.
- 9:57Want to be far away from home because I have personal like you
- 10:00know take care of family. So that was even more so than do
- 10:04I have enough experience question that played a large
- 10:07factor in me deciding which flight company that I wanted to
- 10:11apply to. And so I think they were.
- 10:14I applied to a couple that was either like one or two hours
- 10:16away. I didn't want to drive like 4 to
- 10:205 hours for this. But you know I was like okay.
- 10:22Well, you're kind of limiting yourself.
- 10:24Push it a little bit. Three hours, Three to four
- 10:27hours, Okay, fine. But because of that distance,
- 10:30not because of the company or anything, that it was the
- 10:32distance that I was like okay, whatever, just put it in, what's
- 10:35the worst that can happen? That question, that phrase
- 10:37always pops up in my head. But as I was interviewing for
- 10:42me, what's important for me is like, you know, you're open to
- 10:45teaching me. Because of my background, like
- 10:47that's what I that's why I'm here for this career.
- 10:50And also just the feel of it because you know, being at
- 10:53bedside, I've experienced, you know, people not being open or
- 10:57like bullying and all that stuff.
- 10:58So that was those two things were most important to me.
- 11:02And interviewing all these places, I felt more comfortable
- 11:05with the one that was 3 hours away.
- 11:08And it was honestly all just because of a conversation in the
- 11:12interview. They made me feel comfortable.
- 11:13They they made me. Really, You know, feel like I
- 11:17was a part of them. Like they wanted me as much as I
- 11:19wanted them. So I end up choosing the one
- 11:23that was farther away, which was last choice.
- 11:27Again, not because of the company, just because of the
- 11:28distance. Yeah, yeah, so.
- 11:34From Yeah, From when I feel like it's a little bit different,
- 11:36just because there there weren't that many options, so I really
- 11:39only applied to one place. But when I was applying to one
- 11:44company, they have multiple bases.
- 11:47And so it was it ended up being like just the same interview for
- 11:51the same company, even though they have multiple bases.
- 11:55So I don't really feel like there was a a ranking that I had
- 11:59to do just because it was, you know, do you want it or not?
- 12:03Do you want it? Yeah, I I have to drive 4 hours
- 12:07to Amanda. It kind of stinks, but.
- 12:10Yeah, I ended up renting a place.
- 12:11That's like gas is. Expensive these days it really.
- 12:15Is so as far as like the application process, you know I
- 12:21really talk about people come to me and they think we're going to
- 12:25really hit in on areas that they're weak on and of course we
- 12:28cover those areas, but I do a lot.
- 12:31Of thought work as far as you know.
- 12:34We want to show them in the interview who you are, who you
- 12:37are as a person, who you are as a nurse and what you value.
- 12:40And I think a lot of people don't understand like that's a
- 12:43big part in in really standing out compared to everybody else.
- 12:48What was it that you tried to convey or what was the?
- 12:52Thoughts that you had going into the interview that you feel like
- 12:55made you stand out and be successful in the process I.
- 13:01Think. And this is something that we
- 13:04spoke about. You know, every person brings
- 13:06something different into whoever you're working at.
- 13:11And for me, like I said previously, I take care of the
- 13:14family member. And I've always been very, very
- 13:16selfconscious of that because in my previous jobs it's always
- 13:20been a deterrent for me to work like, oh hey, like.
- 13:24I need to swap shifts. I was that annoying person that
- 13:26sent emails constantly or like I couldn't be at work because of
- 13:31these things. And you know, I'm.
- 13:32I'm really self-conscious about it and even to this point
- 13:34sometimes I am. And I think, excuse me if I'm
- 13:41like veering off from the question because I tend to do.
- 13:44But I think that aspect of taking care of family is what
- 13:50helps me be more passionate about nursing.
- 13:53Like, push me to know why, push me to choose something that
- 13:58separates me geographically farther.
- 14:02And you know, actually it's funny because I was talking to
- 14:05my coworkers about this, like, hey, like, I'm sorry if I like,
- 14:08have to leave or something because of that distance.
- 14:11And you know, they have been so accepting.
- 14:15David, it's funny because my first preceptor was like, I
- 14:18actually took care of my grandparent too and.
- 14:22Very similar experiences. And with the flight world, I
- 14:25think it's so focused on going back home to your family that
- 14:30it's so open and they know because of that.
- 14:33Like, I feel like everyone that I've met in flight, they're
- 14:35always responsible for taking care of someone.
- 14:37So it's that common understanding, uncaring, but I
- 14:42think. Having my family member to take
- 14:45care of, I think that brings a unique perspective for me to my
- 14:49base. Like, hey, like I'm
- 14:50understanding if you need to change schedule or like
- 14:53understanding for patients sometimes when you know things
- 14:56go crazy yourself. So yeah, So what was your
- 14:58thought going into each interview?
- 15:00Because we kind of came up with one that you felt like was
- 15:03believable for you and really drove you.
- 15:05Yeah, well, going in the interview I was, I didn't want
- 15:09to say anything or be open about my personal life because, again,
- 15:13from previous experiences, it was more of a negative thing
- 15:16more than a positive thing. And immediately, I think what
- 15:21made me most comfortable with my the company that I went with,
- 15:25everyone at base was like, Oh no, like.
- 15:27That is not an issue whatsoever. Like don't even think it's an
- 15:30issue. And they they caught it in my
- 15:31tone like they knew I was self-conscious about it.
- 15:34So I think having that made me realize like, oh like they can
- 15:39already sense what I'm feeling over the phone.
- 15:42Like, I think this is the right fit for me.
- 15:44Yeah, great. How?
- 15:49About you. What's the question I?
- 15:52Was thinking that mid, mid answer to yeah, we we were
- 15:55talking about like I really work on thought work with you guys
- 15:59and really showing in the interview like who you are and
- 16:01what you value. Like that's what they're looking
- 16:03for. They're not looking for your
- 16:04experience. They're looking for who you are
- 16:06as an individual, what you're going to bring to the team.
- 16:08So one what was the thought that that you came up with that kind
- 16:11of drove you through the interviews?
- 16:13What thought did you have? And then what was it that you
- 16:16brought to the table about what you valued and that you really
- 16:19wanted to convey to them? Well, I think one of those I I
- 16:23would say is. Again coming, going back to just
- 16:26not feeling like I'm experienced enough or knowing enough.
- 16:29I think working with you and going through all this you know
- 16:34thought work in regards to my mindset of I do belong here, I
- 16:38do belong at you know, I have a seat at this table like it's
- 16:42like I belonged I. I'm like, what am I trying to
- 16:45say? I'm like, I belong at this table
- 16:48with five people interviewing me, like I deserve this.
- 16:52I worked hard for it. And I think kind of what you're
- 16:54saying is something I kept telling myself because, you
- 16:58know, I. I've done hard things and I can
- 17:00do hard things before or I've done the hard things before.
- 17:04And so that kind of helped get me through it because I just
- 17:07don't feel like I may be the smartest person in the room, but
- 17:11I feel like I work hard for what I what I have.
- 17:16So I feel like that kind of really helped push me through
- 17:17and I I did my best to just be. Myself and not act like I knew
- 17:22everything because I know I didn't.
- 17:25You know, whatever questions they threw at me and maybe I
- 17:27didn't have the answer to, I was just genuine about it.
- 17:31And I think I try try to convey, I mean, I'm I can be teachable.
- 17:37Like, I may not know everything, but I'm willing to learn.
- 17:39Like, I'm here because I want to learn as well.
- 17:42Yeah. Yeah.
- 17:43And I think, you know, what I tell people is that even if you
- 17:46don't tell them that in the interview, I always offer for
- 17:48them too. But even if you don't, if you
- 17:50can be thinking that, then they're always going to hear it
- 17:53in your tone of voice. They're always going to know.
- 17:55Just like you were saying, Amanda.
- 17:56Like you were talking about, you know, your family, but they knew
- 18:00that that was something for you, So they brought.
- 18:02That up. So I think that's great to
- 18:05remember, Okay. So now I want to move beyond the
- 18:07interview because this is where the real work begins and this is
- 18:11what I try to prepare people for on day one who come to me that
- 18:17want to get into flight. I say your work doesn't just
- 18:20end. Once you pass the interview and
- 18:22you accept your offer and you you start orientation, that's
- 18:27where the really hard. Work starts.
- 18:29That's where, like, the obstacles really start to come
- 18:32up. So tell me how it was for you
- 18:35guys and kind of what came up for you after you got hired on
- 18:40and then after you went through the initial training?
- 18:46It's a fire hose. Right in the face is the only
- 18:50thing I can think of. I definitely questioned why I
- 18:56did it multiple times. I mean Even so now, but
- 18:59especially that first week. It was very intimidating and I
- 19:04know different companies do it differently, but for me we had
- 19:09like our general orientation and then our first orientation like
- 19:12at base. And then after that one week we
- 19:14have something called regional intensive, which is like you
- 19:17know you in the Midwest area, we come together and we get tested
- 19:21about things and they were like ventilator stuff like things
- 19:25like you wouldn't even like. Touch like for me and I see you
- 19:28or Ed, I'm like alright if I owe 200%, that's almost as much as I
- 19:32know about it then at this point.
- 19:35But it was Oh my gosh, I questioned like Oh my gosh, it
- 19:38like it really hit my head like you are not ready for this.
- 19:41You are not ready for this. And it it was a very emotional
- 19:45coaster. But.
- 19:48I mean it that was the first week and it kind of settled down
- 19:51a bit. And I mean just a little bit
- 19:53because it is a constant, like you have to be, you're in charge
- 19:56of your own education, you make it what you want it to be.
- 20:02I mean, I kind of got to a point where I would constantly study
- 20:07and look for new things like, oh, I don't remember learning
- 20:09this about an E KG or this about a ventilator or bypass setting,
- 20:14but I think for me, funny enough.
- 20:16I think we talked about it in our session like, you know, we
- 20:18need to just separate a time, put a timer on what you're
- 20:22studying and then stop studying. And I think because you're in
- 20:26that kind of it's that stressful phase in your body, like I need
- 20:30to constantly do this that it's hard for me to differentiate it.
- 20:35But I mean it's it's gotten better.
- 20:39I'm, I'm not saying it's like a bad thing.
- 20:41It was just very overwhelming especially that first couple
- 20:44weeks. But it is a kind of thing like
- 20:46you even like the way my schedule works is every other
- 20:49week we work but on your off week like I try to set an hour
- 20:53to learning about something because I I think one of the
- 20:56weeks I I was like, you know what I'm just going to have the
- 20:59week off, which nothing wrong with that.
- 21:02But it was harder for me to kick myself into gear like OK, like
- 21:05what did you do for that whole life though So I think it is
- 21:10really nice. Like, it's not like there's
- 21:12guidance, but no one's holding your hand.
- 21:14Like you have to be responsible for it, which is a good thing,
- 21:17because again, it is what you make of it, yeah.
- 21:20Absolutely. So for my orientation it is
- 21:25definitely does feel like a Firehouse in the face for sure.
- 21:30You know, we they take us to like a week long and dock and
- 21:33you have all this information thrown at you from lectures to
- 21:36clinicals, simulations. And I think that that can be
- 21:40pretty overwhelming pretty fast because you're there from like,
- 21:44you know wee hours in the morning till like in that late
- 21:47in the afternoon and you're just your your brain is fried at the
- 21:51end all the information that you're receiving.
- 21:55But I think you have to, like Amanda said, you have to make
- 22:00the most out of it, like on your own, like there's plenty of
- 22:02people that'll go and they'll just go to class.
- 22:05They don't take notes, they. Go to the bar at the hotel and
- 22:11you'll find them there the rest of the night.
- 22:13And, I mean, it's it. You really can't do that.
- 22:16You have to make the most of it yourself.
- 22:20You know, find the group of people that are trying to study,
- 22:23but don't overwhelm yourself because they don't expect you to
- 22:26know everything after that one week.
- 22:29And if they do, then you might not be the right company.
- 22:31I think they know that it's going to be a lot of information
- 22:34that they're giving you. Give yourself a little bit of
- 22:36grace. Take down time afterwards, you
- 22:40know, depending on, I don't know what everyone's programs would
- 22:42look like, but just give yourself a little bit of of
- 22:45grace. Find some time, like, you know,
- 22:48to watch a movie, to do whatever for yourself.
- 22:51Exercise so that you don't feel overwhelmed.
- 22:55And know that everybody else feels just as overwhelmed as you
- 22:59do. And if they don't, then they've
- 23:01probably been flying for years and this is just another job.
- 23:05And they're just there for I don't even know for what they're
- 23:09there for because I feel like everyone wants to really show
- 23:14themselves that they that they're going to the next level
- 23:17and they're they're trying to achieve something whether it's
- 23:20for themselves or their families or whatever the case may be.
- 23:23But they're they wanna they've worked hard to be there too And
- 23:27so they're probably just as overwhelmed as as you are
- 23:31orientation process I think it was about.
- 23:35I want to say about two months. For me, it just kind of depends.
- 23:38They like base it off what calls you receive a number of flights.
- 23:42And I think for that I was lucky in that I had the same
- 23:48preceptor, which is probably how it should be for everyone.
- 23:52But to have the same preceptor, they can kind of follow and know
- 23:55how you've been doing. Like, you don't have to start
- 23:57over with them. You don't have to reintroduce
- 23:58yourself. Tell them what your background
- 24:00is. They know what you're struggling
- 24:02with versus having a priest, a new preceptor every time.
- 24:07But you know that you have all these things that you're
- 24:12supposed to be doing during orientation, and if you're not
- 24:15making the most out of it, then I mean it.
- 24:17It also just a reflection on what you're what you're going to
- 24:21be like as a as a coworker, just because if you're just sitting
- 24:25around asking for them to initiate your education.
- 24:29That just that's a bad reflection on yourself.
- 24:31And so I mean it's just a constant learning process from
- 24:34the beginning and you know they start you off slow and that
- 24:37they'll they won't necessarily throw you into the clinical
- 24:40aspect of things initially because you know flight is a
- 24:43whole different setting. So they'll they'll they'll
- 24:45initiate that is aircraft safety.
- 24:48You know, this is the radio. Don't worry about all the
- 24:52buttons, we'll get there. But you know, they slowly try to
- 24:56get you all the information that you need.
- 24:58And. Try.
- 24:59You don't give it to you in small bits and pieces, but I
- 25:02mean in general, it's just challenging just because you're
- 25:06in a new environment, working environment and people that you
- 25:09don't know. Potentially you're far from home
- 25:13and it can be just overwhelming. And so I think it's important to
- 25:16just to find whoever is your support system, whether it's
- 25:20your brother, your sister, your best friend, your fiance, you
- 25:25know, and. And just really anchored to them
- 25:28so that you know you, you feel you, you're able to propel
- 25:31yourself through it because it can be overwhelming very, very
- 25:34fast for sure. Yeah, this is like the part
- 25:38where I try to convey to my clients.
- 25:41This is the hardest part right here.
- 25:43And this is really why I got into coaching and mentoring and
- 25:48why. You know at the core I wanted to
- 25:50start my own business in IT because this is where flight
- 25:53companies lose people is right after orientation and they get
- 25:57let go off of orientation and now it's like you have these
- 26:01feelings of I need really I need more help like I I need support
- 26:08and. I think that's why I like being
- 26:11a strong mentor because I felt the exact same way right after I
- 26:14got off. It was like okay.
- 26:16Now what? Who's going to take me through
- 26:17year one? Who's going to take me through
- 26:19year two? Who's going to take me through
- 26:20the next? Things that, you know, we get
- 26:22calls, but sometimes we don't see the same diagnosis for six
- 26:25months. So it's all those feelings and
- 26:28all of those emotions. And so this is where the real
- 26:31work begins and this is where I tell my clients like.
- 26:35Right before they get into it, the grass isn't greener on the
- 26:38other side. Once you get to your dream job,
- 26:40the work begins again. So what would you guys say to
- 26:44that part of it for that and also picking piggybacking off of
- 26:49what Floricella said, I personally like, I know you
- 26:54mentioned like some like for some people it's great to have
- 26:56one preceptor who knows. For me, this is interesting
- 27:01enough because we hired a. Bunch of people on our base and
- 27:04we had to swap off our preceptors a bit and there was
- 27:07just kind of a whole confused like who works well with who.
- 27:11And my preceptor is going on vacation for a month.
- 27:14So I'm gonna be with different people.
- 27:16But it actually worked well because it's different
- 27:21personalities and I think it's nice and I'm very like okay,
- 27:26what are my goals for this week? I'm very like OCD about some of
- 27:29this stuff. And my new preceptor that I was
- 27:33matched with. We're pretty, we're pretty much
- 27:35up there with our 80D80 level and it's kind of it was it's
- 27:40good because she recognizes that and she actually had to talk
- 27:44with me because she's like, you know, we don't expect you to
- 27:46know everything. And sometimes it does feel like
- 27:48they do want you to because when they ask you and test you
- 27:51questions and you're just frying your brain.
- 27:53But it's that reminder to slow it down like this is funny
- 27:56enough my goal is not to work on EKG's or ventilators.
- 27:59It's learning to slow it down and build my foundation.
- 28:03And I think all of us who go into flight nursing, we come
- 28:07from, you know, very difficult parts of nursing and we want to
- 28:11hit the ground running and it's learning to slow yourself down.
- 28:14So I think it's it's nice when you are matched up with someone
- 28:17having that consistency. But in a way it is really nice
- 28:20to see how different people do different things and just
- 28:23learning that communication skill.
- 28:24Like hey, like even if I'm working with you for one shift,
- 28:27this is what I've worked on. This is what I think I need help
- 28:30mom. But just setting expectations
- 28:32and I think what Florisella said was correct with like knowing
- 28:36what you're expecting from a company, like if they expect you
- 28:39to do everything like on your third flight, then that's
- 28:41probably not the right company for you.
- 28:44So it's it's knowing yourself and how you are as a learner as
- 28:49well, yeah. Jenice, I forgot the question.
- 28:56Well, I was just saying that I I think you, you realize when
- 29:00you're in it that the real work begins after the interview,
- 29:03after the offer, that, you know, we have the thought that the
- 29:06grass is going to be greener on the other side once we get to
- 29:09our dream job. And it's in fact even more
- 29:11difficult. It just comes with its own set
- 29:13of problems. So what would you say you know
- 29:16to that and and how was that? For you.
- 29:20I think I said this in my last part in the last interview that
- 29:23we did. But I think get you a Janessa,
- 29:27if you can't, if you can't find a mentor within your base or you
- 29:32know your previous job, maybe that can kind of help help you
- 29:36with because a lot of it is really is just thought work
- 29:39because. So again you're not going to
- 29:41have all the clinical aspects down.
- 29:42You're not going to have all of the operations things down.
- 29:45They don't expect you to, they shouldn't.
- 29:48So if you can find a mentor, I feel like that's it's so
- 29:50important and it's kind of why I'm back here.
- 29:53Again you know, I know we did you know or three months and
- 29:56then I was like I'm good and then I'm like okay, I miss
- 29:59Janessa. And so I I feel like that has
- 30:04helped so much. You know, I say that in.
- 30:09You have all the flight experience, you you know where
- 30:12they're coming from. So I feel like having someone
- 30:14that's also in this, that's been on the same boat, that sees
- 30:17people like them all the time, it's encouraging because they
- 30:22know that you speak from experience, that they're not
- 30:25alone and and really it's so much of it is thought work, you
- 30:30know and. And just having having a support
- 30:32system name it if it's not if it's not huge in us.
- 30:35Although your ideal candidate for it but you know like for me,
- 30:41I my fiance, he he flies as well and he's he's flying he's been
- 30:45flying for a year so before I came into the flight world.
- 30:50I kind of have somebody to talk to about it and he understands
- 30:54where I'm coming from and I think that's also been so
- 30:57helpful and encouraging in that okay I'm, I don't I don't feel
- 31:01alone in it and so that that helps tremendously.
- 31:06Yeah. Just know that you're not alone
- 31:08and it's it's not just you. You're not just a bad person or
- 31:11bad clinician or something. Yeah, I do want to ask you about
- 31:14that floricella, because what I do notice with a lot of.
- 31:18A lot of my current clients and old ones is that once they get
- 31:22hired on and then they are in this fire hose stage of
- 31:26orientation and they're really, really overwhelmed.
- 31:28That's when I usually lose them as a client because I think that
- 31:32they got a lot going on, right. There's a lot of things, a lot
- 31:35of new information and they do have some of the tools to to to
- 31:39do it on their own. But what would you say, you
- 31:43know, for yourself, what was it that kind of made you come back
- 31:46and realize? I do.
- 31:48Need a little bit support and work with my thought work.
- 31:53I mean, I think, you know, that's it's great for those that
- 31:57don't feel like they need to work on their thought work.
- 31:59But I think a lot of people like myself that I lack.
- 32:03I think I lack a lot of content, yeah.
- 32:10I feel like I do like some, you know, confidence in different
- 32:13aspects. So a lot of it does go back to I
- 32:15need help with my thought work and although I was already off
- 32:19orientation I believe a little bit after we stopped meeting I
- 32:25think I just felt like. There was things missing that I
- 32:30because I wasn't on orientation anymore, I didn't have that one
- 32:33preceptor that was like in a way kind of holding my hand and that
- 32:37I could go to all the time, you know, And he moved bases, so
- 32:41it's not like he's still there present for me.
- 32:45And so I think that part of that is just feeling lost again
- 32:50coming off orientation and that I don't have a list of things
- 32:54that I need to be doing and. I felt like I needed a little
- 32:58bit of guidance and this is how I need to restructure myself in
- 33:03order to continue progressing and not staying stagnant and not
- 33:07just sitting around versus being just aimless with what I do or
- 33:13don't do at work. Because you know a lot of often
- 33:16times in the flight world you are, you can't just you have
- 33:20downtime, you know, So you have to make the most of it if you
- 33:24want to. Yeah, much different.
- 33:27From that, yeah. So yeah, I think that's kind of
- 33:31where I felt like I was just a little bit lost afterwards.
- 33:34And like, well, how do I push myself to keep going now that I
- 33:38don't really have, like a list that I need to literally check
- 33:41off? It's just going to be on my on
- 33:44my own. That.
- 33:45I yeah. And I.
- 33:48You know, even just talking to you guys today and both
- 33:50realizing a lot of the same things that issues you guys had
- 33:53crossed over and are the same for a lot of my flight nurse
- 33:56clients is that we just need a support system where we can say
- 34:02hey, I feel the same way like I'm going to the same thing.
- 34:06And I think often times, you know, we don't get that or.
- 34:11In the healthcare field, we don't want to say that we need
- 34:13the help either. And so just like talking to you
- 34:16guys, I'm like thinking about all of these ideas and these
- 34:18things. Like I think it would be so cool
- 34:20for us to bring like a group coaching call where it's all you
- 34:25guys in the same kind of boat. And we talked about the same
- 34:28things. And you realize, I think from
- 34:29that, that we're going to the exact same emotions, we're going
- 34:33to the exact same fears and the exact same problem, so.
- 34:38You know, just something for me to think about.
- 34:39But I just want to end with like what's been the one thing now
- 34:46that you guys have gone through this experience that or the one
- 34:51thing that maybe anyone told you or the advice that someone's
- 34:53told you that's really helped you stay strong and where you
- 34:57are right now. I think the phrase that from
- 35:03what I hear from both you, my preceptors and just everyone at
- 35:08base is if you weren't meant to be here, you wouldn't be here.
- 35:13And I think we set very high. Like I'm not trying to speak for
- 35:18everybody, but I think in general in healthcare, like all
- 35:22providers, we set very, very high bars for for ourselves.
- 35:26And I know I'm like, lecturing about this, but I, I go through
- 35:29this and I have to remind myself this where, you know, it's okay
- 35:32to not be, all right? It's okay to not know.
- 35:36And I think that pops in my head because I always question like,
- 35:40oh, I'm probably going to get fired.
- 35:41I should probably quit. I'm not ready for this.
- 35:44And it's going to pop up. And I know it's going to keep
- 35:46popping up like every shift, every second.
- 35:49I'll randomly be eating at home and oh, my gosh, you need to
- 35:51quit. But it's remembering that, you
- 35:55know, you deserve that chance to be there.
- 35:57There's a reason why you've pushed so hard to be there.
- 36:01And it's not going to be perfect.
- 36:02Like you said, it's not. Grass is green on the other
- 36:04side. Like it's it is what you make it
- 36:07and you deserve to be there. Yeah, yeah, I love that.
- 36:13It's hard to not just pay you back off for the medicine.
- 36:17I think, yeah, everyone. Everyone is it.
- 36:20That's kind of just what they say when you know they can tell
- 36:24you're overwhelmed. They know that you have a lot on
- 36:26your plate when you start off. And it really is.
- 36:30If they don't expect you to know everything, you.
- 36:35You deserve to be there. And it it really, it really is
- 36:39just that. It's like give yourself a little
- 36:41bit of grace, because this isn't the first time someone's gone
- 36:44through this, that feeling of overwhelm.
- 36:47Like just like let it, let it happen.
- 36:50And then give yourself, give yourself some grace because it's
- 36:55it's not new and it's it's natural.
- 36:57And that means you want to be there because you care, because
- 37:00you want to challenge yourself, and you want to know all the
- 37:02things. And that speaks volumes on
- 37:05yourself, too. Because if you weren't
- 37:07overwhelmed, and I mean, maybe it's not for you, I don't know,
- 37:10maybe, maybe that's the wrong thing to say.
- 37:12But it's so natural, it's so normal to feel overwhelmed and
- 37:16just allow yourself to feel it and then just give yourself
- 37:18praise because you do deserve to be there.
- 37:21Yeah, and I thought. Of one last thing I want to ask
- 37:25you guys is what would you say to someone who was in your
- 37:27previous position that is thinking about?
- 37:30Applying but feels like they don't have enough experience.
- 37:33Just do it do. It.
- 37:38I love it. I love it, which is so true.
- 37:40Like, just go for it. You have nothing to lose.
- 37:44Yeah, even if you don't feel ready, you get the job.
- 37:47You don't feel ready? Then say Nope, not the time for
- 37:49me. Yeah, We have like these very
- 37:51thoughts. Like you said in healthcare, we
- 37:53hold high standards and we feel like things are very linear for
- 37:56us. You go to nursing school, you
- 37:57work ICU or ER and you get you know, but like sometimes it's
- 38:00just not like that. Sometimes we got to take two
- 38:02steps back and try to go forward again and just keep going for it
- 38:05until we get it. Yes, definitely it is like.
- 38:11Yes, it is so surreal to like have both of you guys on.
- 38:15I am just like so proud. Of the both of you, because I
- 38:19know where both of you started and to see you progress and be
- 38:23where you are right now and to be a part of this industry, you
- 38:26are the people that this industry needs like with your
- 38:30guidance too. No.
- 38:33And I always say, you know, you guys did the.
- 38:34Work I just. Held the belief for you until
- 38:37you got it, so I really appreciate you being on today.
- 38:39I really think it's going to mean a ton to someone out there
- 38:43who's teetering back and forth about whether I should do it or
- 38:46whether I shouldn't. Is there anything that I didn't
- 38:49ask you guys that you would like to leave at the end of this kind
- 38:54of conversation that you'd like to say or anything that we left
- 38:57out? Don't, don't stay stagnant just
- 39:01because you don't feel like you're good enough.
- 39:03And I say stagnant. I mean, just push yourself to do
- 39:07whatever. Whatever you're trying to go
- 39:09for, whether it's, whether it's fly or whether it's go to DMV
- 39:12school, whether it's. Go to Med school.
- 39:16I mean, it doesn't matter. Whatever it is that you're
- 39:17trying to do. I mean, just don't hold yourself
- 39:20back because it's just in your head.
- 39:23Like, I mean, I know a lot goes into into doing new things.
- 39:27You know, maybe movie, maybe money, you know all these other
- 39:30things. But don't let it be in your head
- 39:33to hold yourself back. Try it, you know, with fly I
- 39:37feel like. Even if even if you don't get
- 39:40it. I think that's something I I did
- 39:43really tried really hard was to just, although I knew I would
- 39:46have been sad if I didn't get the job.
- 39:47But even if I hadn't I think it would have been such a big
- 39:52learning experience. Because those interviews aren't
- 39:55just any other interviews. I mean, they're big interviews.
- 39:57They have no tests. Go with it and you know these
- 40:01big panel interviews and click. Clinical tests that they put you
- 40:07through, it's, it's a challenge in itself.
- 40:09And I mean if you can get through that and even if you
- 40:11don't, if you don't get it right away, it's still such a learning
- 40:14experience and you can just work on it and do it again and you'll
- 40:18have that. So I think just yeah, that's
- 40:21that's all I had to say. I love that I.
- 40:25Think if you're doubting yourself, you're probably in the
- 40:27right place. Yeah, yeah, I love that.
- 40:32I like my. New thought for myself is if I'm
- 40:35scared that I'm doing it right. Yes.
- 40:38And I've. Been scared for the last two
- 40:40months, so yeah, that's where I'm supposed to be.
- 40:43Well, thank you guys for being on.
- 40:45I think there's a lot of valuable things that were said
- 40:47and I know that you know one person is there right now and is
- 40:50feeling those things. So I know it'll be really
- 40:52helpful for them to hear it from you and you know your
- 40:56experience. So thank you again for being on.
- 40:58I know you guys have busy schedules, so I really
- 41:01appreciate it. Thanks for that so much.
- 41:04All right. Bye.
- 41:10It was so great to be able to interview both of them so that
- 41:12they could realize that the thoughts and.
- 41:15The doubts that they were having were very similar, that they
- 41:18were not alone. And I think that that is one
- 41:20thing that I have learned being in this industry is that you
- 41:24think that what's happening to you, no one else is feeling.
- 41:27But that's just so not true that the majority of the people or
- 41:30someone has felt exactly the way that you feel.
- 41:33And so having the support and knowledge in that I think is
- 41:36huge and realizing that we all go through these doubts and we
- 41:39all have confidence issues. But if you're ready to level up
