- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Whether it's morning, afternoon, or evening, thank you for taking some time out of your day to spend with me.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: And today's topic is all about how we get unstuck in life and we move forward.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Um, this seems to be coming up more and more in client sessions of just feeling people feeling like they just don't know how to move forward from where they are.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: You know, and everyone feels it now and then, but sometimes we start feeling it on a more routine basis where we feel that stagnant what's next, or where am I going, what am I doing feeling that just really leads to this feeling of stuckness, where you feel like maybe you're trapped in some old routines, or you just aren't able to quite feel like you're moving forward, which starts to lead to maybe just feelings of apathy or let being feeling lethargic or tired or just even lonely or sad perhaps because you're just feeling stuck.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And without that clarity of how you move forward, it's and and I don't just mean in your professional world, this could be your personal world too.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: That feeling of stuckness can really start bringing you down.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, when we think about what could cause that, different things can can affect it and different things can trigger it.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Um when we think about you know, different life events or different um stages of life, this can happen at any stage.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: You know, when there's the transition from adolescence into adulthood, um it happens for some people where they just feel like they're stuck, they can't quite move forward out of one stage to the next, or even when you maybe you get married and then you're stepping into parenthood and you just feel stuck and you can't move forward.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Um and and and sometimes feeling stuck is not, you know, being stuck or being in one place is not always a bad thing, but it can lead to feel to those feelings of as I was mentioning before, just feeling maybe less than, or it can trigger um feeling not good enough, or that you're not doing, you're not feeling you're not living your life on purpose, you know, that that thought process.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: So when we think about why we would want to find ways to help us start getting together or start moving forward, right?
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Why would we want to get unstuck?
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: The image that pops into my head that I um still remember is like growing up in Connecticut and getting stuck in the snow and just, you know, you're you're spinning your tires and you're not going anywhere, and it is the most infuriating thing in the world.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: And really what you just need is a little bit of traction.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: And so um a lot of us at North would would use things like kitty litter or sand or something, and we'd keep it in the trunk of our car to make sure that if we ever got stuck in the sand, we are stuck in the snow, we would have that to create the traction to move forward.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And that's really what we're talking about is get coming up with some tips to help us get a little bit of traction so we can start to move forward.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: And the very first thing is, you know, when we think about what keeps us stuck, a lot of us will recognize that we're start, we're we're still living or we're still ruminating over something that happened in the past.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: So one of the very first things I talk to people about when they feel stuck is just starting to recognize, are you holding on to something from the past?
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: And is it time to to figure out ways to release yourself from it?
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: You know, we that we talk about this in in the context of forgiveness.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Forgiveness isn't for the other person.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Forgiveness is is about allowing yourself to let go of the anchor that's holding you back.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: So if something maybe in your past happened and you've been holding on to it, it's it's taking the time to do the work to figure out how and what needs to occur for that for you to be able to grow through it and to let go of it.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Another thing that often comes up when you're feeling stuck is sometimes it's recognizing that maybe either there's a lack of goals being set, or maybe the goals are so big and big goals are amazing.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying big goals are bad, but maybe it's about breaking those goals into smaller, attainable goals that are achievable and that are somewhat um uh realistic and and sort of within a certain amount of time so that you're you're getting these small wins along the way.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: So again, it's like that metaphor with with the kitty litter or the sand when you're stuck in the snow.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: It's the traction.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: You're getting traction by setting these smaller attainable goals, celebrating those, and moving forward with each one.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Another thing to think about when you're feeling stuck is am I afraid?
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Is there a fear that I'm holding on to?
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Am I afraid of trying something new?
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Am I afraid of a big change?
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: And what is that fear about?
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: And in recognizing that that part that feels afraid, maybe that part's there because it's trying to keep you safe or keep you um keep you maybe from the potential of quote unquote failing.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: And I'm putting it in quotes because uh failure is um is just not recognizing that there's a growth opportunity, right?
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: That's when we actually fail, is when we when we just stop.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: And so maybe what's keeping you stuck is the fear of stepping out of your comfort zone, and maybe this is also about taking a small step out of the comfort zone and building upon that.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Um identifying different ways or different things that could be triggering you into those feelings.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: So a way that we can figure that out is by journaling and just keeping track of patterns and looking for patterns of thoughts or feelings or um behaviors that could be contributing to that feeling of stuckness.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: One important one that I talk about routinely is listening to your inner voice.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: A lot of times as we go through life, we are so we are just bombarded by different messages from different areas, whether it be cultural messages, societal messages, familial messages.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: It's just there are so many external voices and messages that we're constantly taking in.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: And we start, it's easy to start to lose track of what your inner voice is saying.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: And so learning and relearning to hear that voice and trusting yourself is so, so important because oftentimes the reason why we feel stuck is because we've lost track of what our inner voice is actually telling us, or can or we are believing false beliefs about self.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: And that's what's limiting us because we're not actually hearing what's actually true.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: So, you know, that's a really important one when I when thinking about how we move forward, and when we're feeling stuck, it's like it's recognizing, am I stuck?
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Because I'm constantly hearing other people's voices rather than my own.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: And how can I, how can I move forward?
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: And most often when we're feeling stuck, we do need support.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: And I'm not gonna lie, you know, as a coach, this is a lot of the work that I do with my clients, is you know, helping, helping to create space for people to start unpacking what might be holding them back and and offering that support because when we try to sometimes get unstuck on our own, it's very difficult because so often we're so close to the situation that we actually can't see what's holding us back.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: So absolutely find support.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Talk about it, talk about what is coming up for you so that you're able to help yourself move out of that feeling of stuckness and into this feeling of and into this state of of moving forward and recognizing and and just being really self-compassionate that this isn't this isn't a forever thing.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: You know, you might feel discouraged right now because you do feel stagnant or you do feel like you're stuck.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: And I really implore you to utilize self-compassion, which is kindness over judgment, instead of putting yourself down for this being stuck and not moving forward, instead it's offering yourself some kindness and um asking yourself some curious questions, you know, going through some of the things that I brought up just earlier and being curious about those things rather than judge judgmental about those things.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: And as you do that and you start to move these things, you know, one step at a time, much like again the traction, you're just getting traction and you're you're gonna slowly move yourself out of that spot.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: It's very important to celebrate each and every step forward as you take it.
