- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KKRFM
- 0:05Speaker 1: Sports Headlines.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Good morning. Happy Tuesday. Cracking Ticket Tuesday. When you hear
- 0:10Speaker 2: the sounder, you can win two tickets to the October
- 0:12Speaker 2: 20th game. Detroit Red Wings. Listen for the horn and
- 0:16Speaker 2: Edward Fitzhugh throughout the day, once an hour, every hour.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Headlines brought to you by Frostbrew and Coors Light. As
- 0:21Speaker 2: cold as the Rockies with Jadarian Price on injured reserve.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Zach Charbonnet still out. The Seahawks are getting not one
- 0:27Speaker 2: but two new running backs. Coach Mike McDonald said yesterday
- 0:30Speaker 2: the team's finalizing signing two-time Pro Bowl rusher Joe Mixon
- 0:35Speaker 2: to the practice squad. A 30-year-old hasn't played since the
- 0:37Speaker 2: end of the 2024 season with Houston following a mysterious
- 0:41Speaker 2: foot injury. Talk more about that. And last night a
- 0:44Speaker 2: report that the Seahawks are going to sign off the
- 0:46Speaker 2: Commander's practice squad undrafted rookie Robert Henry Jr., He will
- 0:50Speaker 2: go right on to the 53-man roster, so there's more
- 0:52Speaker 2: of a chance Henry plays than Mixon on Sunday when
- 0:56Speaker 2: the Seahawks host the 49ers. We'll talk a lot about
- 0:59Speaker 2: the Seahawks' running back situation coming up. Michael Peggs Jr.
- 1:02Speaker 2: completed 15 of 20 passes. He looks back from his injury.
- 1:05Speaker 2: DeJuan Robinson ran for 145 yards. The Falcons smacked the
- 1:08Speaker 2: Saints in the Superdome in New Orleans last night, 45-24.
- 1:12Speaker 2: The Kraken, fresh off a 6-1 win over Calgary in
- 1:15Speaker 2: their home opener, are back on Climate Pledgerina Ice tonight
- 1:18Speaker 2: against the Vegas Golden Knights. It's a 6-40 puck drop
- 1:21Speaker 2: right here on KGR. Of course, our pregame show at
- 1:23Speaker 2: 6 p.m. with the captain, Mike Benton. Major League Baseball playoffs.
- 1:27Speaker 2: The Rays beat Cam Schittler and the Yankees last night.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Take a 2-0 series lead in a best-of-five series. Schittler
- 1:36Speaker 2: hadn't lost since July. He loses in the playoffs. Now
- 1:39Speaker 2: the Yankees are up against it. The White Sox won
- 1:41Speaker 2: again at Cleveland to take a 2-0 series lead over
- 1:43Speaker 2: the Guardians heading back to Chicago. They don't have to
- 1:45Speaker 2: win one of the next three. Today the Dodgers play
- 1:48Speaker 2: at Atlanta with that series tied at one. The Brewers
- 1:50Speaker 2: play at San Diego with Milwaukee up two games to none,
- 1:54Speaker 2: needing only one win of the last three. The Washington
- 1:57Speaker 2: Huskies football team returns home after their loss that should
- 2:00Speaker 2: have been a win at USC. They play Friday at
- 2:02Speaker 2: Husky Stadium, 6 p.m. right here. On KJR and the
- 2:05Speaker 2: Washington State Cougars also play on Friday at 6 p.m.
- 2:08Speaker 2: at Utah State. You're going to leave us, huh, Jessamyn?
- 2:10Speaker 2: I am. Going to Ogden, Utah.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Leaving you just like I did to Ian. Yep, I'm
- 2:16Speaker 3: out of here.
- 2:17Speaker 2: I will not accuse you of that. Now on with
- 2:20Speaker 2: the Tuesday show. Happy Tuesday to you. The fog has
- 2:24Speaker 2: lifted across the Pacific Northwest. A rather sunny morning here
- 2:26Speaker 2: in Seattle. Greg Bell, Jessamyn McIntyre. Good morning, ma'am. Good morning.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I drove through a cloud on my way in.
- 2:33Speaker 3: It was crazy. All the way up from Edmonds, all
- 2:35Speaker 3: the way down here.
- 2:36Speaker 2: That time of year in the Pacific Northwest, cool nights
- 2:39Speaker 2: and warm days, and then the fog in the morning.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Early October here was just idyllic. It was just. I
- 2:47Speaker 2: did referee a JV football game at Franklin High School
- 2:49Speaker 2: yesterday afternoon, like 5 o'clock, and it was like 75 degrees.
- 2:53Speaker 2: It was just beautiful. Those of us in the Pacific
- 2:56Speaker 2: Northwest know September, October, early October is really nice, and
- 3:00Speaker 2: the leaves are changing and everything.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 3:02Speaker 5: It's been beautiful, especially because we haven't got those torrential pours.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Knock on wood over here. I'm knocking, knocking, knocking.
- 3:10Speaker 5: But usually, you know, when those leaves start to change
- 3:12Speaker 5: and all of a sudden you get some torrential downpour
- 3:14Speaker 5: that just knocks them all off the tree because they're
- 3:17Speaker 5: already on the way out.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Right.
- 3:18Speaker 3: And it hasn't been that way this year.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Exactly. And it's coming. We know it's coming. But so far,
- 3:24Speaker 2: it's beautiful across the Pacific Northwest. Hopefully, it's beautiful— Wherever
- 3:27Speaker 2: you might be listening, maybe on the iHeartRadio app or
- 3:31Speaker 2: 933KGR. com or just on your good old-fashioned radio, thanks for
- 3:34Speaker 2: joining us. It's a Kraken Ticket Tuesday. As I mentioned
- 3:36Speaker 2: at the very top of the show, how that works
- 3:38Speaker 2: is every hour we're going to play a horn, the
- 3:41Speaker 2: fairy horn that they play when they score a goal
- 3:43Speaker 2: at Climate Pledge Arena, which they've scored six of them
- 3:45Speaker 2: the other night in their first home game against Calgary.
- 3:48Speaker 2: And if you hear that horn, and Everett Fitzhorn, Fitzhorn,
- 3:52Speaker 2: Fitz you.
- 3:53Speaker 3: He can be Fitzhorn on Tuesdays.
- 3:55Speaker 2: If you hear him and the horn, call in, and
- 3:59Speaker 2: you can win two tickets. Remind me again. Is it
- 4:02Speaker 2: the 12th caller, 10th caller?
- 4:04Speaker 6: 10th caller.
- 4:04Speaker 2: 10th caller.
- 4:05Speaker 3: It's the 10th caller.
- 4:05Speaker 2: 12 would be the Seahawks.
- 4:07Speaker 5: Yes.
- 4:07Speaker 2: The Matty Beneers 10th caller.
- 4:09Speaker 3: And that's the jersey I'm wearing today.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Jessamyn is sporting a Kraken Matty Beneers jersey, if you
- 4:13Speaker 2: can see it on YouTube. But when you hear the horn,
- 4:16Speaker 2: be the 10th caller. Every hour, your chance to win
- 4:19Speaker 2: two tickets to the Kraken against the Detroit Red Wings
- 4:22Speaker 2: on October 20th at Climate Pledge Arena. We do it
- 4:25Speaker 2: every hour from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. every Tuesday
- 4:29Speaker 2: throughout the Kraken season. Off to a 2-1 start with
- 4:32Speaker 2: 12 goals in their two wins, plus a 3-1 loss
- 4:37Speaker 2: to Edmonton. They play the Vegas Golden Knights tonight. Much
- 4:40Speaker 2: of a step up in competition compared to the I mean,
- 4:43Speaker 2: the Cogger Flames might end up getting the number one. Well,
- 4:45Speaker 2: I know it's a lottery in the NHL, but they're
- 4:47Speaker 2: going to be one of the worst teams in the league,
- 4:49Speaker 2: it appears.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Well, I think the Kraken just made them look that way, Greg.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that could be. The Matty Beneers gal is saying, no,
- 4:56Speaker 2: wait a minute.
- 4:57Speaker 5: I think that the Kraken are off to a great start.
- 5:00Speaker 2: That would be nice to sustain that tonight against the
- 5:03Speaker 2: Vegas Golden Knights. They play tonight, and then I think
- 5:07Speaker 2: after tonight, yeah, five games on the road back east
- 5:10Speaker 2: for the Kraken after tonight's home game against... Vegas, on
- 5:13Speaker 2: the show today, what the Seahawks are doing to reinforce
- 5:16Speaker 2: the running back position. They're going older and they're going young.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Joe Mixon is a mysterious case to people down in Houston.
- 5:23Speaker 2: We're going to talk about that. Kenneth Walker, I'm going
- 5:27Speaker 2: to ask you right off the top of the Tacoma
- 5:29Speaker 2: Dodge text line, 49451. Do you feel that the Seahawks
- 5:32Speaker 2: have made a mistake in letting Kenneth Walker go for
- 5:36Speaker 2: bigger money than they were willing to pay, than Kansas
- 5:38Speaker 2: City Chiefs paid him after being the Super Bowl MVP?
- 5:41Speaker 2: We know about the job share with Zach Charbonnet last
- 5:44Speaker 2: year that ticked off Walker. I talked to Walker during
- 5:47Speaker 2: the season. I talked to him again at the Super
- 5:48Speaker 2: Bowl in February, and he was ready to go. Let's
- 5:52Speaker 2: put it that way. So the chances are, even if
- 5:54Speaker 2: the Seahawks had put forth an effort to keep him,
- 5:56Speaker 2: he wasn't going. He was not happy that in the
- 5:59Speaker 2: contract year he was in a job share. The Seahawks
- 6:02Speaker 2: did it to get him through 17 games. They weren't
- 6:04Speaker 2: quite sure he would hold up physically. He had missed
- 6:07Speaker 2: games in each of his seasons to that point. We'll
- 6:11Speaker 2: see if he can keep up that pace with the Chiefs,
- 6:13Speaker 2: who are using him 70-80% of the time and giving
- 6:15Speaker 2: him 25 touches a game.
- 6:16Speaker 5: Yeah, I remember my dad telling me, watching the Super Bowl,
- 6:20Speaker 5: that the way that they were using him was unsustainable. And,
- 6:24Speaker 5: you know, this is Coach Mack, you know, plethora of experience,
- 6:28Speaker 5: almost 50 years worth of coaching under his belt, and... Yeah,
- 6:32Speaker 5: he said that that was unsustainable. And I'm like, well,
- 6:34Speaker 5: that wasn't the point. They were trying to win the
- 6:36Speaker 5: Super Bowl and Zach Charbonnet was hurt. And I thought
- 6:40Speaker 5: if they move forward with him, that wouldn't be the plan.
- 6:43Speaker 5: But I don't think it's sustainable with whatever team you're on.
- 6:46Speaker 5: And that includes the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Andy Reid does not agree with Coach Mack or his daughter.
- 6:51Speaker 2: He has 25 touches a game, another 70-plus percent of
- 6:55Speaker 2: the snaps against the Raiders on Sunday, and the Chiefs
- 6:57Speaker 2: are 4-0. At 11 o'clock, we're going to talk to
- 7:00Speaker 2: Jory Epstein, the senior NFL reporter for Yahoo Sports, who
- 7:03Speaker 2: talked to Kenneth Walker this morning. She interviewed him, and
- 7:06Speaker 2: we're going to talk to her about what she learned
- 7:08Speaker 2: from him, and we're also going to talk about whether
- 7:10Speaker 2: she thinks the Seahawks made a mistake in not paying.
- 7:14Speaker 2: It's pretty chic right now to draw that line. Not
- 7:16Speaker 2: too hard to say, wait a minute, you had a
- 7:18Speaker 2: Super Bowl MVP running back, and now you're signing Joe
- 7:21Speaker 2: Mixon and Robert Henry Jr. What? Yeah, that's where they
- 7:27Speaker 2: are at running back right now. And who knows what
- 7:30Speaker 2: Robert Henry Jr.
- 7:31Speaker 7: Is.
- 7:31Speaker 2: He was a 6.9 yards per carry guy at Texas
- 7:34Speaker 2: San Antonio last year. But he also fumbled and had
- 7:38Speaker 2: those problems, and that's part of the reason he didn't
- 7:40Speaker 2: get drafted. The other reason, one of the reasons, is
- 7:42Speaker 2: he's 5'9 and 196 pounds. So he's more of a
- 7:46Speaker 2: fast back. They've got an Emmanuel Wilson plotting back. They've
- 7:49Speaker 2: got George Helani for blocking on third down. We've talked
- 7:52Speaker 2: about how he's missed some blocking assignments already early this
- 7:54Speaker 2: season that have ruined plays and gotten Sam Darnold in trouble.
- 7:58Speaker 2: And then they have Velas Jones Jr. up from the
- 8:00Speaker 2: practice squad, and that is it. That is what the
- 8:02Speaker 2: Seahawks have currently at running back after letting Kenneth Walker walk. 49-451,
- 8:08Speaker 2: do you feel the Seahawks made a mistake? We're not
- 8:10Speaker 2: ready to write off Jadarian Price, nor am I trying to.
- 8:13Speaker 2: I'm just saying, at the moment where we sit, I
- 8:16Speaker 2: think Chuck Powell and Anderson Hurst were talking about that
- 8:18Speaker 2: about a half hour ago as well. But it's certainly
- 8:21Speaker 2: easy to draw that line right now. But we'll talk
- 8:23Speaker 2: to Jory at 11 o'clock about what she heard and
- 8:26Speaker 2: knew from Kenneth Walker. Are we worried about Sam Darnold?
- 8:30Speaker 2: He's thrown three interceptions in the last two games, and
- 8:33Speaker 2: two of them have been just plain awful. The one
- 8:35Speaker 2: in Washington that sealed the Commander's win, that made it
- 8:38Speaker 2: a two-score game late in the fourth quarter, he just
- 8:40Speaker 2: laid over the middle with a linebacker that he said
- 8:43Speaker 2: he saw, yet he tried to throw it to A.J.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Barner anyway, and the linebacker picked it off and ran
- 8:48Speaker 2: it back for a pick six, a play that should
- 8:49Speaker 2: not happen in the NFL. And then the one... It
- 8:53Speaker 2: wasn't worse because of the result in the game, but
- 8:55Speaker 2: the one against the Chargers, you would be mad at
- 8:58Speaker 2: a high school... a junior high quarterback for throwing that
- 9:02Speaker 2: pass because he did it blindly. The very first play
- 9:04Speaker 2: of the game... Sam Darnold said he didn't know that
- 9:08Speaker 2: the linebacker was out on the check down in the flat,
- 9:10Speaker 2: which means he never even looked because he was standing
- 9:13Speaker 2: right next to Emmanuel Wilson. And I know most times
- 9:16Speaker 2: a check down in the flat, and especially the first
- 9:18Speaker 2: play of the game, you don't expect tight coverage out there.
- 9:20Speaker 2: You're expecting Wilson to be standing out there alone in
- 9:23Speaker 2: the flat, and you just dump it down to him.
- 9:25Speaker 2: And Darnold looked down the field and just turned and
- 9:28Speaker 2: chucked it into the left flat right to the linebacker.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Are we concerned with Sam Darnold? That's another question for
- 9:34Speaker 2: the Tacoma Dodge Text Line 49451. We'll hear from the
- 9:38Speaker 2: Seahawks quarterback during the show. And then Washington State Athletics,
- 9:41Speaker 2: near and dear to Jessamyn McIntyre, the Cougar sideline reporter
- 9:45Speaker 2: for Cougar Football Radio Broadcast. They're going down a slippery
- 9:49Speaker 2: journalism slope on a campus that's home to the esteemed
- 9:53Speaker 2: Edwin R. Morrow Journalism School.
- 9:55Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:56Speaker 2: We're going to talk about that. We're going to try
- 9:58Speaker 2: to get a hold of Greg Woods.
- 9:59Speaker 3: He will join us at 1045.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Great. I'm glad to hear that because a journalist is
- 10:03Speaker 2: going to talk about what the journalism school, the renowned
- 10:06Speaker 2: journalism school of Washington State is doing in its athletic department.
- 10:12Speaker 2: It ain't good. We'll talk about that. Artificial intelligence is
- 10:15Speaker 2: here to stay and now it's invading the people that
- 10:19Speaker 2: used to write for a living. I'm one of them, McClatchy. McClatchy,
- 10:23Speaker 2: the stones at the News Tribune, also investing heavily in AI.
- 10:29Speaker 2: We see where this is headed, but we'll talk at
- 10:31Speaker 2: 1045 with Greg Woods of the Spokesman Review about Washington
- 10:34Speaker 2: State Athletics bringing AI into writing its stories, game stories, features, profiles, bios,
- 10:42Speaker 2: everything people used to do. 11.30, we'll read back your text,
- 10:46Speaker 2: 49451 on the Tacoma Dodge text line. A couple questions
- 10:49Speaker 2: I've already asked. And we have our talkbacks, 30 seconds
- 10:52Speaker 2: or less, on the iHeartRadio app. Greg Bell Show, 933KJR,
- 10:57Speaker 2: little red microphone button at the top. Or on our website, 933KJR. com,
- 10:59Speaker 2: there's a little red microphone button at the top. Leave
- 11:02Speaker 2: a 30-second or shorter voicemail message, and Jessamyn will play
- 11:05Speaker 2: those back at 11.30. I sure will.
- 11:07Speaker 3: You know I love your voices.
- 11:09Speaker 2: And Ms. Maddie Beneers is going to have their pick
- 11:12Speaker 2: at 1135 of Factor Fiction today.
- 11:15Speaker 5: Now, he only says that because I'm wearing his jersey.
- 11:17Speaker 5: So let's not get that sorted.
- 11:19Speaker 2: I know, Mike. I've gone out to dinner with Mike,
- 11:22Speaker 2: her husband. I'm not trying to. Maddie's still, what, 20
- 11:25Speaker 2: years old? He doesn't have to worry about it.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:28Speaker 3: And also, I don't know if he has a partner either.
- 11:31Speaker 3: So that's not what it is.
- 11:34Speaker 2: No, not at all. She's only the cougar in a
- 11:37Speaker 2: sideline reporter capacity.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Thank you for.
- 11:40Speaker 4: That, Craig.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Yes, least I could do.
- 11:43Speaker 3: There's the clarification.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Yes, least I could do. So let's talk a bit
- 11:48Speaker 2: about Kenneth Walker before we talk to Jory at 11
- 11:51Speaker 2: o'clock about him. I mentioned the snap counts. He got 75%
- 11:56Speaker 2: of the snaps for the Chiefs in Las Vegas. He
- 11:59Speaker 2: had 22 carries for another 100-yard game. They only threw
- 12:03Speaker 2: it to him once this time. They've thrown it to
- 12:05Speaker 2: him a half dozen times already in a couple games.
- 12:07Speaker 2: But they are using him, and Andy Reid is using him,
- 12:10Speaker 2: far more than the Seahawks did. Remember last year, the
- 12:11Speaker 2: job share? And Zach Charbonnet ended up with 12 rushing
- 12:15Speaker 2: touchdowns last year because often, and I talked to Kenneth
- 12:18Speaker 2: Walker about this too, often he would get the ball
- 12:21Speaker 2: down the field between the 20s, and then it got
- 12:23Speaker 2: in the red zone, and he would disappear forever. It's like,
- 12:26Speaker 2: wait a minute.
- 12:27Speaker 3: I mean, I get it.
- 12:28Speaker 5: I get that kind of frustration, but that was for
- 12:31Speaker 5: preservation purposes.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Correct. But in a contract year, yeah, you make your
- 12:35Speaker 2: money on touchdowns and big plays, and you don't make
- 12:39Speaker 2: a lot of your money going between the 20s when
- 12:40Speaker 2: you're trying to get a new contract. And he felt that.
- 12:45Speaker 2: And I asked him at the Super Bowl last year,
- 12:47Speaker 2: three days before the Super Bowl in San Jose. We
- 12:49Speaker 2: were sitting at a table. He's a quiet guy, so
- 12:51Speaker 2: not a lot of media were coming up to him.
- 12:53Speaker 5: Yeah, he's pretty reserved. I talked to him in the
- 12:55Speaker 5: locker room after the game, too, and yes, very reserved.
- 12:58Speaker 2: And I walked up to him, and I said, hey,
- 13:00Speaker 2: how's this job share thing going for you this year?
- 13:03Speaker 2: And he just looked at me with kind of a
- 13:07Speaker 2: wry grin on his face, and he said, how would
- 13:09Speaker 2: you feel?
- 13:10Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 13:13Speaker 2: And I didn't really need.
- 13:14Speaker 7: To say it.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Yeah, but for someone who doesn't speak a lot, that
- 13:16Speaker 3: speaks volumes.
- 13:17Speaker 2: That was the lead to my story at the News
- 13:19Speaker 2: Tribune that day because I had already known that he
- 13:22Speaker 2: was not exactly thrilled with the whole setup last season.
- 13:26Speaker 2: As early as September and October, I pretty much thought
- 13:29Speaker 2: he was going to leave because of how it was
- 13:30Speaker 2: going down. But that cemented it for me. And then
- 13:34Speaker 2: he wins the Super Bowl MVP of the 150-yard game
- 13:38Speaker 2: in the Super Bowl. Again, I voted for Devin Witherspoon.
- 13:41Speaker 2: I had one of the 50-some votes in the league
- 13:43Speaker 2: for that game. And I voted for Devin Witherspoon and
- 13:46Speaker 2: the Seahawks defense. But Kevin Walker wins the Super Bowl MVP,
- 13:49Speaker 2: and then his market value just skyrockets. It skyrocketed from
- 13:52Speaker 2: the beginning of the playoffs when Charbonnet got hurt.
- 13:55Speaker 3: Because he was the guy, yeah.
- 13:57Speaker 6: Correct.
- 13:58Speaker 2: And the playoff game against San Francisco is when Charbonnet
- 14:01Speaker 2: got hurt early in the first half of that game.
- 14:02Speaker 2: And from that point on, the rest of the NFC
- 14:05Speaker 2: Divisional Playoff, the NFC Championship game against the Rams, and
- 14:07Speaker 2: then the Super Bowl, the games that the entire league
- 14:10Speaker 2: and every GM is watching— Right. Walker's shot through the roof.
- 14:15Speaker 5: Well, and that is sustainable at that point of the season.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Correct. And a small, small sample.
- 14:19Speaker 8: Right.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 14:21Speaker 2: And so it was a perfect storm of him getting
- 14:24Speaker 2: hot at the right time, Charbonnet getting hurt, and Walker
- 14:27Speaker 2: having the stage to himself, taking full advantage of it,
- 14:31Speaker 2: and the Chiefs paid him. $ 14 million, I think it was,
- 14:33Speaker 2: a year for three years. And the Seahawks said, no,
- 14:37Speaker 2: thank you. Now, I hear a lot of people, I
- 14:39Speaker 2: mentioned this last week, I hear a lot of people saying, well,
- 14:41Speaker 2: They paid Rashid Shahid $ 17 million, and of course they
- 14:44Speaker 2: haven't had the return on investment so far this season,
- 14:46Speaker 2: certainly not as a patch catcher or a returner, and
- 14:49Speaker 2: now they're lining him up as tailback. If they paid
- 14:52Speaker 2: $ 17 million to Rashid Shahid, why didn't they not pay $ 13,
- 14:55Speaker 2: $ 14 million to Kenneth Walker? Well, it's a value proposition,
- 14:59Speaker 2: the position. The Seahawks and John Schneider don't think they
- 15:03Speaker 2: should spend that kind of money at the most attrited,
- 15:06Speaker 2: most injured position with the shortest shelf life in the sport.
- 15:10Speaker 2: There's a Todd Gurley chill around much of football. What
- 15:13Speaker 2: does that mean? Remember the Rams gave Todd Gurley after
- 15:16Speaker 2: a gigantic season, the one, I think it was the
- 15:19Speaker 2: 2021 season. It might've been before that. Gave him $ 60
- 15:23Speaker 2: million guaranteed. And he played like four games of that
- 15:26Speaker 2: contract before he blew his knee out and was done.
- 15:29Speaker 2: And it was his second knee. He had a knee
- 15:31Speaker 2: in Georgia and college. And Gurley basically never played again.
- 15:36Speaker 2: He signed with Atlanta, but he, on and off for
- 15:40Speaker 2: the next couple of years. And that was it. Todd
- 15:41Speaker 2: Gurley was out of the league and done with 60
- 15:44Speaker 2: million guaranteed that the Rams got nothing back on. And
- 15:48Speaker 2: ever since that contract, there's been a chill. And as
- 15:51Speaker 2: John Schneider got to see it up close and personal
- 15:52Speaker 2: in the NFC West, there's been a chill over signing
- 15:56Speaker 2: guaranteed money for longer term than a year or two
- 15:59Speaker 2: to running backs beyond their first contracts. And the Seahawks
- 16:02Speaker 2: have been doing draft a quarterback, Excuse me, draft a
- 16:06Speaker 2: running back, play him for four years on a minimum salary,
- 16:09Speaker 2: relatively low rookie contract, and then move on to the next. Now,
- 16:14Speaker 2: Chris Carson, you could argue, was on his way to
- 16:16Speaker 2: a second contract, and then he has a neck injury,
- 16:19Speaker 2: proving the point of investing in running backs. Ended his career.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker, you use him for four years. Use him
- 16:26Speaker 2: is a really cold term, but that is the business
- 16:28Speaker 2: side of the league. You use him for four years,
- 16:30Speaker 2: and before he gets to be mammoth $ 13, $ 14 million
- 16:33Speaker 2: a year, you let him walk, and you draft his replacement,
- 16:36Speaker 2: Jadarian Price. Now, that debut has not gone exactly swimmingly,
- 16:40Speaker 2: has it?
- 16:41Speaker 5: No.
- 16:42Speaker 3: But he's young, and he has a lot of game
- 16:46Speaker 3: to play.
- 16:46Speaker 2: What do you think of Price? I like him.
- 16:49Speaker 3: I like him.
- 16:49Speaker 5: I think that the fact that he was behind Love
- 16:53Speaker 5: in college allowed him to be more fresh when he
- 16:57Speaker 5: came here. I do appreciate the fact that Mike McDonald,
- 17:00Speaker 5: or maybe it was Fleury, who made the decision to
- 17:03Speaker 5: bench him after a fumble and sit there and watch.
- 17:07Speaker 5: I like him, and I think he's got all the
- 17:09Speaker 5: potential in the world, but he needs to learn that
- 17:11Speaker 5: gaining that extra two yards is less important than carrying
- 17:15Speaker 5: the football, protecting the football.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Which is exactly what he told me his mindset would
- 17:19Speaker 2: be going forward after the Washington game. Now, since then...
- 17:24Speaker 2: John Schneider, the general manager, said on his pregame show
- 17:26Speaker 2: Sunday on the Seahawks radio network that Price played hurt
- 17:31Speaker 2: in that game against Washington. He didn't say, I'm not
- 17:33Speaker 2: using it as an excuse, but he did play hurt.
- 17:35Speaker 2: And we know that now, yeah. He was in a
- 17:37Speaker 2: red no-contact jersey the entire week before the game. He
- 17:40Speaker 2: guts through the game, according to Schneider, fumbles. The entire
- 17:45Speaker 2: Seahawks fandom gets on him about that. They bench him
- 17:49Speaker 2: during the game, and that was a Mike McDonald decision
- 17:51Speaker 2: for sure. And then he re-injures the ribs. It's an
- 17:55Speaker 2: upper rib injury, according to the GM, because Price fell
- 17:58Speaker 2: on it in practice on Wednesday. And that's why he's
- 18:01Speaker 2: on the injured reserve list. Went on Saturday. Schneider said
- 18:05Speaker 2: it is not a season-ending thing, they said. Chuck asked
- 18:08Speaker 2: me this morning, well, why did he jump straight to that? Well,
- 18:11Speaker 2: it's either a minimum of four weeks or you could
- 18:14Speaker 2: be on for the rest of the season. And the
- 18:16Speaker 2: GM wanted to dispel the fact that, no, they don't
- 18:19Speaker 2: think it's going to be long-term. So he can't come back,
- 18:22Speaker 2: Price can't, until November 2nd at the earliest, a game
- 18:24Speaker 2: against Chicago, a Monday night game here in Seattle. That's
- 18:27Speaker 2: why they signed Joe Mixon in the meantime. So Joe
- 18:32Speaker 2: Mixon hasn't been on the field since the end of
- 18:34Speaker 2: the 2024 season. He's not going to be ready to
- 18:36Speaker 2: play this week, I can't imagine. He had a foot
- 18:39Speaker 2: injury that John McClain, the longtime writer for the Houston
- 18:43Speaker 2: Chronicle beat writer, said that everyone in Houston was mysterious.
- 18:46Speaker 2: They had no idea. He wouldn't talk about it. The
- 18:48Speaker 2: team wouldn't talk about it. Mixon reportedly told his Bengals teammates,
- 18:53Speaker 2: his old Bengals teammates, where he played his first seven years,
- 18:55Speaker 2: that he would never play again, that the foot injury
- 18:57Speaker 2: was so bad. And here he is, proven yesterday in
- 19:00Speaker 2: a tryout that he's healthy enough to go on to
- 19:02Speaker 2: the Seahawks practice squad. They signed him. They signed Robert
- 19:05Speaker 2: Henry Jr. And a lot of Seahawks fans are left
- 19:08Speaker 2: to say, why didn't you re-sign Kenneth Walker? 49451 about
- 19:12Speaker 2: the Seahawks running back situation. We'll read back those texts later.
- 19:16Speaker 2: at 1130. Up next, more on these running backs. Who
- 19:19Speaker 2: is Robert Henry Jr.? How's he going to fit in
- 19:21Speaker 2: and why he's going to play first, it seems, instead
- 19:25Speaker 2: of Joe Mixon. That's coming up. Greg Woods from the
- 19:28Speaker 2: Spokesman Review to talk about Washington State Athletics going down
- 19:31Speaker 2: a slippery slope at 1045. Jory Epstein, a senior writer
- 19:35Speaker 2: for Yahoo Sports and the NFL, is going to talk
- 19:37Speaker 2: to us about Kenneth Walker. She talked to Walker this morning.
- 19:39Speaker 2: 1135 Factor Fiction, your chance to win $ 1, 000. All that
- 19:43Speaker 2: coming up on a packed show on a Tuesday on
- 19:45Speaker 2: 93.3 KJRFM. Welcome back. I'm Greg Bell and Jessamyn McIntyre
- 20:10Speaker 2: with you on 93.3 KJRFM. We're actually joined in the studio.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Anna just dropped in. I just met her from the
- 20:16Speaker 2: University of Washington, recent graduate.
- 20:18Speaker 5: Yes.
- 20:19Speaker 2: She's in the football program in the marketing department.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Welcome to the team.
- 20:22Speaker 2: You can slide on headphones and join a part of
- 20:25Speaker 2: the show if you want. They're somewhere around here. We're
- 20:29Speaker 2: going to talk at 11 o'clock. She's like, nope. Her
- 20:32Speaker 2: face is beetroot.
- 20:33Speaker 3: She's a wonderful addition to our staff.
- 20:35Speaker 2: She's like, nope. Yes.
- 20:36Speaker 7: Nope.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Come on, we'll get you to do that sometime. I
- 20:40Speaker 2: don't care. We're going to talk at 11 o'clock to
- 20:43Speaker 2: Jory Epstein, the senior NFL writer for Yahoo Sports, who
- 20:46Speaker 2: spoke this morning to Kenneth Walker. I already put on
- 20:49Speaker 2: the text line the first question I posed to the
- 20:51Speaker 2: Tacoma Dodge text line 49451. Did the Seahawks make a
- 20:55Speaker 2: mistake in letting Kenneth Walker go? It sure seems like it,
- 20:58Speaker 2: doesn't it? But we've already explained the reasons why. That
- 21:01Speaker 2: doesn't mean it's the right thing.
- 21:03Speaker 3: You can't predict those reasons, though.
- 21:05Speaker 5: True.
- 21:05Speaker 8: True.
- 21:06Speaker 2: And again, the injury at that position, the injury history
- 21:09Speaker 2: of Kenneth Walker and the injury history at that position
- 21:11Speaker 2: dictated that their finances don't go the way that the
- 21:14Speaker 2: Chiefs went. Andy Reid uses running backs a lot differently.
- 21:19Speaker 2: I mean, in the past game, he doesn't just send
- 21:21Speaker 2: them out on checkdowns like Emmanuel Wilson was standing when
- 21:25Speaker 2: Sam Darnold threw that interception in the first place Sunday.
- 21:28Speaker 2: He sends them on actual pass routes. I mean, they
- 21:30Speaker 2: have route trees for their running backs in Kansas City.
- 21:33Speaker 2: And They are also using him so far, Kenneth Walker,
- 21:36Speaker 2: at a clip that the Seahawks were not using Walker. 75%
- 21:40Speaker 2: of the snaps on average. 75% again in Las Vegas
- 21:44Speaker 2: last week for the Chiefs. It's working. The Chiefs are 4-0,
- 21:47Speaker 2: and Walker is rolling. He had 22 carries for another
- 21:49Speaker 2: 100-plus yard game. It sure makes you wonder when you're
- 21:53Speaker 2: starting to break down Robert Henry Jr. and Joe Mixon,
- 21:57Speaker 2: who hasn't been in the league since the 2024 season.
- 22:00Speaker 2: wait a minute, why are we spending time on these
- 22:03Speaker 2: two cats when we had the Super Bowl MVP in Seattle?
- 22:05Speaker 2: I get it.
- 22:06Speaker 5: But, however, I mean, you can't predict anything. Would Kenneth
- 22:09Speaker 5: Walker still be healthy if he was still here? Would
- 22:12Speaker 5: something have happened during training camp? I mean, this is
- 22:15Speaker 5: almost like when someone makes a field goal in a game,
- 22:19Speaker 5: or misses one, I should say, and then you go, well...
- 22:22Speaker 5: If we just had those three points. No, because the
- 22:25Speaker 5: whole game changes at that point. You get a kickoff
- 22:28Speaker 5: after a made field goal. The team doesn't take your
- 22:31Speaker 5: opponent doesn't take over at that. And everybody changes what
- 22:35Speaker 5: they actually think about what could.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Happen in this game. And no, it's not just those
- 22:41Speaker 3: three points.
- 22:42Speaker 5: And that's what I mean about Kenneth Walker. You know,
- 22:45Speaker 5: getting in there and being able to do what he's
- 22:48Speaker 5: doing with the Chiefs, it could be completely different with
- 22:51Speaker 5: the Seahawks.
- 22:51Speaker 3: And he could have gotten injured.
- 22:53Speaker 5: You know, there's just a million different possibilities when it
- 22:57Speaker 5: comes to what football players do. And it's, you know,
- 23:01Speaker 5: grass is greener, that kind of situation. And sure, maybe
- 23:05Speaker 5: they did make a mistake, but I think that they
- 23:07Speaker 5: did pretty well in shoring up what they have.
- 23:10Speaker 2: It's a philosophy, and they decided that they're not going
- 23:13Speaker 2: to spend big, big, big bucks in multi-year contracts beyond
- 23:16Speaker 2: a first rookie deal on running backs. And this is
- 23:19Speaker 2: an organizational philosophy. They drafted his replacement rather than spending
- 23:23Speaker 2: the money on re-signing or even signing another one. Now,
- 23:26Speaker 2: Joe Mixon will be a minimum salary deal. He's going
- 23:28Speaker 2: on to the practice squad. Mike McDonald confirmed that yesterday.
- 23:33Speaker 2: The Seahawks have yet to officially announce that, nor have
- 23:35Speaker 2: they officially announced. We're expecting either today or tomorrow before practice,
- 23:38Speaker 2: they will announce that Robert Henry Jr. is signing to
- 23:40Speaker 2: the 53-man roster. Who's he? He's an undrafted rookie running
- 23:44Speaker 2: back from Texas, San Antonio. Started his college career at
- 23:47Speaker 2: junior college. He ran for 6.9 yards per carry last year.
- 23:51Speaker 2: So why wasn't he drafted? Well, he had a fumbling problem.
- 23:54Speaker 2: He's also 5'9 and less than 200 pounds. So he
- 23:57Speaker 2: is much different than Emmanuel Wilson, who is more of
- 24:00Speaker 2: a plodding power guy. run you over back.
- 24:03Speaker 3: And proved it this weekend.
- 24:05Speaker 7: He did.
- 24:05Speaker 2: 21 carries for 81 yards. So how is the depth
- 24:08Speaker 2: chart setting up now? Well, it would seem that Henry
- 24:11Speaker 2: from the Commander's practice squad is going to play soonest,
- 24:15Speaker 2: as in Sunday, against the 49ers because he's going onto
- 24:18Speaker 2: their active roster. When you sign someone off another practice squad,
- 24:22Speaker 2: he has to go onto the active roster. That's part
- 24:24Speaker 2: of the rules. So poaching that guy means that Henry
- 24:28Speaker 2: is playing, or at least going to be suited to
- 24:30Speaker 2: play as a backup. Fellas Jones Jr. was signed to
- 24:33Speaker 2: the active roster when the Seahawks put Jadarian Price on
- 24:36Speaker 2: injured reserve Saturday. The top two remain, for now, Emmanuel Wilson,
- 24:41Speaker 2: 500-yard back with Green Bay last year, signed to a
- 24:44Speaker 2: one-year minimum salary contract this offseason. Missed most of training
- 24:48Speaker 2: camp with a hamstring injury. The Seahawks entered the season
- 24:51Speaker 2: thinking he, Wilson, was going to be their short yardage back,
- 24:54Speaker 2: and they liked how physically he ran compared to Price
- 24:56Speaker 2: being more of a slasher speed guy. And then number
- 25:00Speaker 2: two is George Helani. Now, Helani has been a third
- 25:03Speaker 2: down back mainly because his pass blocking. He's also a
- 25:06Speaker 2: pass catcher from Boise State a few years ago. He
- 25:08Speaker 2: made the team on special teams and on pass blocking. Well,
- 25:14Speaker 2: he's missed a couple glaring misses on pass blocks over
- 25:17Speaker 2: the first three games. He did another one on an
- 25:19Speaker 2: A-gap pressure that got to Sam Darnold on Sunday. So
- 25:27Speaker 2: the point is the cupboard ain't exactly full. And I
- 25:30Speaker 2: can't imagine Mixon is going to be playing anytime soon.
- 25:33Speaker 2: You're going to do the ramp up much like Trevon Diggs.
- 25:36Speaker 2: And it's the trend now in signing veteran players, especially
- 25:40Speaker 2: ones who haven't been on a field for months, that
- 25:42Speaker 2: you sign them to the practice squad so that you
- 25:44Speaker 2: have them before some other team scoops them up. And
- 25:47Speaker 2: then you get them ramped up into football shape. Mixon
- 25:49Speaker 2: has not been on a field since the end of
- 25:51Speaker 2: the 2024 season, January 25, when he played in a
- 25:54Speaker 2: playoff game for Houston. He ran for 1,000 yards that
- 25:57Speaker 2: one year with the Texans. In his seven years with
- 26:00Speaker 2: the Cincinnati Bengals who drafted him, he ran for 1,000
- 26:03Speaker 2: yards four times. He's also had off-the-field problems. In college,
- 26:08Speaker 2: he was in a domestic violence incident for allegedly punching
- 26:12Speaker 2: a woman. It was a settlement. And there was an
- 26:15Speaker 2: alleged gun-waving incident and a road rage in Cincinnati with
- 26:20Speaker 2: another woman. So he's not exactly had a clean slate.
- 26:25Speaker 3: And it's not exactly what we're used to the Seahawks doing.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Well, yes and no. They signed Terry on Arnold, who's
- 26:33Speaker 2: in big trouble. They drafted Frank Clark, who they said
- 26:36Speaker 2: they would never draft someone who had a domestic violence history.
- 26:39Speaker 2: And Frank Clark, of course, was kicked off the Michigan
- 26:41Speaker 2: team for domestic violence, or alleged and charged and settled.
- 26:45Speaker 2: So Joe Mixon remains a mystery in Houston because all
- 26:48Speaker 2: last year, he didn't play a down. He had a
- 26:52Speaker 2: foot injury in the preseason that no one talked about.
- 26:56Speaker 2: John McClain of A longtime writer with the Houston Chronicle,
- 27:00Speaker 2: Hall of Fame voter, I mean, you can call him
- 27:03Speaker 2: Venerable John McClain, wrote this morning on Twitter or yesterday
- 27:07Speaker 2: when the Seahawks signed Joe Mixon. Joe Mixon is out
- 27:10Speaker 2: of the Witness Protection Program, with an exclamation point. In
- 27:13Speaker 2: all my decades of covering the NFL, it's about a
- 27:16Speaker 2: half a century now. I've never seen a stranger injury case.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Texans refused to talk about it. Mixon was never available.
- 27:23Speaker 2: I've never seen a team or a player go to
- 27:25Speaker 2: such lengths to refuse to disclose an injury. That was
- 27:30Speaker 2: Mixon because the Texans thought they had a thousand yard
- 27:33Speaker 2: back coming back to them at age 29 last year.
- 27:36Speaker 2: And he had a foot injury and he never played. Now, reportedly,
- 27:40Speaker 2: there are reports out of Cincinnati that Mixon told his
- 27:43Speaker 2: former Bengals teammates that the injury was so bad he
- 27:45Speaker 2: would never play again. Well, now he is 30 years old,
- 27:49Speaker 2: and he tried out yesterday for the Seahawks because of
- 27:52Speaker 2: their situation at running back a few days after they
- 27:55Speaker 2: put Jadarian Price on injured reserve. And then yesterday afternoon
- 27:59Speaker 2: at the press conference, the day after press conference, Mike
- 28:02Speaker 2: McDonald confirmed that not only the Seahawks were signing him,
- 28:06Speaker 2: but he would go on to the practice squad, and
- 28:08Speaker 2: he called it a process. So we'll see what the
- 28:11Speaker 2: ramp-up is for Mixon. But in the meantime, I think
- 28:13Speaker 2: you're going to see Robert Henry Jr., as the newest
- 28:17Speaker 2: addition to the backfield. But it would seem Emmanuel Wilson
- 28:20Speaker 2: will still be the number one after his 81-yard rushing game,
- 28:24Speaker 2: which brings us back to the Tacoma Dodge text question
- 28:27Speaker 2: I started with the show with. Here we are talking
- 28:30Speaker 2: about Joe Mixon and Robert Henry Jr., and I'm detailing
- 28:32Speaker 2: who these guys are and where Joe Mixon has been,
- 28:34Speaker 2: and he's been in a witness protection program when they
- 28:36Speaker 2: could have had Kenneth Walker, or could they? I don't
- 28:39Speaker 2: think it's as cut and dried as you may think.
- 28:43Speaker 2: I don't think Walker was coming back. no matter what
- 28:46Speaker 2: money they put.
- 28:46Speaker 5: Well, that quote that you stated earlier that he said,
- 28:49Speaker 5: how would you feel?
- 28:50Speaker 3: He did not want to split reps.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Yeah, if you missed it earlier, I asked Walker at
- 28:54Speaker 2: the Super Bowl in San Jose a couple days before
- 28:55Speaker 2: the game, and he just sat down, he and I
- 28:57Speaker 2: at a table. I talked to him at length, and
- 29:00Speaker 2: I only quoted him as saying, I asked him, how
- 29:02Speaker 2: have you gone with this job share this year with
- 29:04Speaker 2: Charbonnet in a contract year? And he said, how would
- 29:07Speaker 2: you feel? And I said, okay, you told me everything
- 29:11Speaker 2: I need to know. And I wrote a story saying,
- 29:14Speaker 2: I think, he's gone. And sure enough, a couple months later,
- 29:18Speaker 2: a month later, he was gone in free agency to
- 29:20Speaker 2: Kansas City. So it's not as though the Seahawks could
- 29:24Speaker 2: have just backed the Brinks truck up and got Kenneth
- 29:26Speaker 2: Walker to stay. He was of the mindset to go.
- 29:29Speaker 2: The Chiefs were of the mindset to pay him more.
- 29:31Speaker 2: And then he wins a Super Bowl MVP and his
- 29:34Speaker 2: market value goes through the roof. So are we worried
- 29:37Speaker 2: about running back? The other question I had on the
- 29:39Speaker 2: Tacoma Dodge Texas, are you worried about Sam Darnold? He's
- 29:42Speaker 2: thrown three interceptions in two games, and two of them
- 29:44Speaker 2: have been just terrible. Not what you'd expect a Super
- 29:47Speaker 2: Bowl winning quarterback to throw. The one in the flat
- 29:51Speaker 2: play one of the Chargers game that he just threw
- 29:53Speaker 2: to the linebacker because he didn't see him there, and
- 29:55Speaker 2: the one in Washington, where he did see the linebacker,
- 29:58Speaker 2: but he still threw late over the middle thinking he
- 29:59Speaker 2: could get it past the linebacker to Barner. Linebacker picks
- 30:02Speaker 2: it off and runs it in for the clinching touchdown.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Seahawks lose for the first time in 10 months. This
- 30:06Speaker 2: was Sam Darnold after the Chargers game in which he
- 30:10Speaker 2: threw for, what was it, 200, barely 200 yards with
- 30:14Speaker 2: an interception and a couple touchdown passes.
- 30:16Speaker 8: Yeah, obviously, you know, it's a good win against a
- 30:19Speaker 8: really good team. I think there's, you know, a lot
- 30:21Speaker 8: of things that we could do better offensively. So, yeah,
- 30:24Speaker 8: we just got to look at the tape. We got
- 30:26Speaker 8: to look at ourselves in the mirror and see how
- 30:27Speaker 8: we can get better from it.
- 30:29Speaker 9: The way that game began with their interception and then yours,
- 30:32Speaker 9: it's kind of a crazy thing.
- 30:33Speaker 2: I guess what happened on that play for you?
- 30:35Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, did a good job of getting out there,
- 30:39Speaker 8: and I just– Told myself I was just going to
- 30:43Speaker 8: get it to the check down if it wasn't there,
- 30:45Speaker 8: if I felt like I couldn't really progress to the
- 30:47Speaker 8: other side, and just tried to get it down. Right
- 30:52Speaker 8: after I threw it, that's when I saw Tuohy kind
- 30:55Speaker 8: of sitting there. Again, he did a great job of
- 30:57Speaker 8: matching the back and covering it. What's it like seeing
- 31:00Speaker 8: a player like Oshichi go back there and then get
- 31:03Speaker 8: to the other.
- 31:03Speaker 10: Line and run it back and score a win?
- 31:08Speaker 8: He wears a lot of hats for our offense. He
- 31:10Speaker 8: obviously does great in special teams as well. It's awesome
- 31:13Speaker 8: to be able to see him do his thing. Obviously
- 31:16Speaker 8: running the football in some regards and obviously catching the
- 31:20Speaker 8: rock as well.
- 31:21Speaker 9: Is that why Emmanuel stepped up taking.
- 31:23Speaker 8: That lead role? I thought he did a great job.
- 31:27Speaker 8: Ran really hard. I feel like our offensive line really,
- 31:31Speaker 8: you know, throughout the game they just kept pushing and
- 31:34Speaker 8: they just kept going. And I feel like that was
- 31:36Speaker 8: kind of the theme of the game was like, all right,
- 31:37Speaker 8: we're just going to continue to run the rock, play
- 31:40Speaker 8: action pass, maybe drop back. But I feel like our
- 31:43Speaker 8: offensive line did such a good job of just keeping
- 31:45Speaker 8: their heads down, which they do every game. But they
- 31:47Speaker 8: just kept their head down and they kept going throughout
- 31:49Speaker 8: the game.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Speaking of keep on going, when you slid and you
- 31:53Speaker 2: got that hit, it looked like you took a moment
- 31:56Speaker 2: and then you gathered yourself and you went right back in.
- 31:59Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, I mean, don't know, yeah, I don't know
- 32:04Speaker 8: if there was a question there, but yeah, it was
- 32:07Speaker 8: just a moment where I just felt like I slid,
- 32:11Speaker 8: and again, sometimes when you see the guy coming, you
- 32:13Speaker 8: can brace, and it doesn't necessarily hurt as bad, but
- 32:18Speaker 8: for whatever reason, I couldn't see him. Obviously, he was
- 32:21Speaker 8: behind me, and so when I slid, I thought the
- 32:24Speaker 8: play was over, obviously, and it felt like all of
- 32:29Speaker 8: his body weight was on my head and neck, and
- 32:31Speaker 8: so I guess that was more so the reason why
- 32:34Speaker 8: it was painful, but when I realized I could move
- 32:37Speaker 8: my neck around and throw, I was good. Yeah, I'll
- 32:40Speaker 8: be all right.
- 32:41Speaker 4: I'll be good.
- 32:42Speaker 9: You've seen so many times over the last couple of
- 32:44Speaker 9: years where you guys will lose a starter and.
- 32:46Speaker 2: Someone will come in and replace it. They may have
- 32:48Speaker 2: no reason to do that today. Why do you feel
- 32:49Speaker 2: like you guys are able to do that?
- 32:52Speaker 8: Yeah, I feel like that's just kind of how we are. Um,
- 32:55Speaker 8: we're a very resilient group. Uh, it's, and again, that's
- 32:59Speaker 8: top to bottom, like our entire team. If we saw
- 33:02Speaker 8: it with, with Leo as well, like Leo went down
- 33:04Speaker 8: for a little bit and, um, you know, whoever it was,
- 33:07Speaker 8: was able to go out there and play, play good football. So, um,
- 33:10Speaker 8: it's always kind of that next man up mentality. It's
- 33:12Speaker 8: a cliche, but, um, that's, that's how we live. Um,
- 33:16Speaker 8: those are the words that we live by. Um, you know, it's,
- 33:18Speaker 8: Everybody has a chance to go out there and play
- 33:21Speaker 8: when they're suited up on Sunday, and you just never
- 33:23Speaker 8: know when your number's going to be called. And, again,
- 33:24Speaker 8: Emmanuel did a great job of just stepping in and
- 33:27Speaker 8: doing his job today.
- 33:28Speaker 9: The touchdown to Torrey looked like that was almost perfectly
- 33:31Speaker 9: designed and everything. I guess what, I mean, obviously that's
- 33:34Speaker 9: just going to Torrey there. Is there something else, somewhere
- 33:36Speaker 9: else they could go with?
- 33:37Speaker 8: Yeah, it's just, it's like a run tag. So, you know,
- 33:40Speaker 8: if it's there, I can take it.
- 33:43Speaker 2: For veterans in the locker room, how do you fix penalties?
- 33:46Speaker 2: We said I'd just talk about it.
- 33:48Speaker 8: Yeah, I think it's a– first of all, I think
- 33:51Speaker 8: you just got to continue to play football, right? It's
- 33:54Speaker 8: one of those things, like, you don't want penalties. There
- 33:57Speaker 8: were a lot of penalties called on both sides today,
- 33:58Speaker 8: but you obviously don't want penalties. But, you know, as
- 34:02Speaker 8: we continue to play these games and, you know, continue
- 34:05Speaker 8: to get this season going, I feel like our guys
- 34:09Speaker 8: on both sides of the ball, special teams too, like,
- 34:13Speaker 8: we'll continue to get better with, you know, technique and not–
- 34:19Speaker 8: you know, using our hands and our feet the right way,
- 34:21Speaker 8: the way that we're supposed to. When a crew is,
- 34:23Speaker 8: I don't want to say flag happy, but when a
- 34:25Speaker 8: crew is throwing that many flags, is that penalty, is
- 34:28Speaker 8: that something that can impact.
- 34:30Speaker 2: As a game goes on, the way that you guys
- 34:32Speaker 2: maybe adjust your game plan a little bit?
- 34:35Speaker 8: I mean, it just affects the down and distance. That's
- 34:38Speaker 8: really the only thing. And for us, especially for me
- 34:40Speaker 8: as a quarterback, like I can't worry about stuff that's
- 34:42Speaker 8: going on like that. Like, If it's a holding, I
- 34:45Speaker 8: just got to play the first and 20 as it is.
- 34:47Speaker 8: I can't be worried about what they're calling or what's
- 34:50Speaker 8: going on out there. It definitely doesn't help the flow
- 34:53Speaker 8: of the game, but at that point, it kind of
- 34:58Speaker 8: is what it is. For me as a quarterback, I
- 35:00Speaker 8: just got to continue to focus on the next play.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Sam Darnold, the Seahawks quarterback, after they beat the Chargers
- 35:06Speaker 2: 30-23 after they had a 27-6 lead. Seahawks 3-1. They
- 35:12Speaker 2: play the San Francisco 49ers 4-0 in a showdown for
- 35:15Speaker 2: the NFC West lead early in the season on Sunday
- 35:17Speaker 2: at Lumen Field. 125 kickoff. And then the Seahawks go
- 35:20Speaker 2: to Denver four days after that for a game against
- 35:23Speaker 2: the Broncos on a Thursday night. Up next, let's go
- 35:26Speaker 2: to Pullman. Actually, Spokane. Greg Woods of the Spokesman Review
- 35:30Speaker 2: is up next to talk about Washington State Athletics' partnership
- 35:33Speaker 2: with an AI company for all its content about football
- 35:36Speaker 2: and more sports. And they're also going to talk about
- 35:38Speaker 2: a new play caller. The Cougs are going to have
- 35:41Speaker 2: their head coach, Kirby Moore, take over play calling from
- 35:44Speaker 2: the offensive coordinator. We'll talk with Greg Woods next. We'll
- 35:46Speaker 2: talk with Jory Epstein of Yahoo Sports about the NFL
- 35:49Speaker 2: tour around the league, including about Kenneth Walker at 11 o'clock.
- 35:52Speaker 2: It's a Kraken ticket Tuesday. Listen for the horn if
- 35:56Speaker 2: it ever fits you to win two tickets to the
- 35:58Speaker 2: Kraken upcoming game against Detroit on October 20th. All that's
- 36:01Speaker 2: coming up on 93.3 KJRFM. Welcome back. Greg Bell and
- 36:17Speaker 2: Justin McIntyre with you on 93.3 KGRFM. Before we get
- 36:19Speaker 2: to Greg Woods about Washington State, Clay calling changes in
- 36:22Speaker 2: football and the athletic department's move yesterday. Adam Shepner of
- 36:26Speaker 2: ESPN is reporting. It turns out the Seahawks have decided
- 36:29Speaker 2: not to sign veteran running back Joe Mixon to their
- 36:32Speaker 2: practice squad after he underwent a physical for the team
- 36:35Speaker 2: per a league source. Of course, his physical health is
- 36:37Speaker 2: the question and why he is unsigned. He had a
- 36:40Speaker 2: foot injury, a mysterious foot injury that we talked about
- 36:42Speaker 2: earlier today. So maybe he's not out of the witness
- 36:44Speaker 2: protection program. Joe Mixon not coming to the Seahawks now.
- 36:48Speaker 2: So it's Robert Henry Jr. or Bust as the replacements
- 36:51Speaker 2: for Jedarian Price being on the injured reserve and Zach
- 36:55Speaker 2: Sarbanian not back yet. We'll talk more about that in
- 36:56Speaker 2: a minute. We're going to talk now to Greg Woods
- 36:58Speaker 2: of the Spokesman Review. He joins us on the Beacon
- 37:00Speaker 2: Plumbing Hotline from Spokane, or I assume Spokane. Maybe it's Pullman. Hello, sir.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Good to talk to you again.
- 37:07Speaker 4: Hey, good.
- 37:07Speaker 11: I'm from Pullman.
- 37:08Speaker 6: I'm not from Pullman, but I do live in Pullman.
- 37:10Speaker 6: I'm never really in Spokane.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Good. Well, you're one of the only guys who are
- 37:16Speaker 2: always at the practices and the press conference then on
- 37:19Speaker 2: the beat.
- 37:21Speaker 11: Yeah, that's basically why I live here.
- 37:24Speaker 6: I mean, if I lived in Spokane, I'd be driving
- 37:25Speaker 6: back and forth every day for three hours.
- 37:27Speaker 11: On the road.
- 37:28Speaker 4: I see.
- 37:30Speaker 3: Greg at every game.
- 37:31Speaker 2: You live in Pullman because Pullman's beautiful and it's a
- 37:33Speaker 2: great place to live. That's why you live there, right?
- 37:36Speaker 2: Let me ask you about Washington State's play calling. Head
- 37:38Speaker 2: coach Kirby Moore yesterday announcing that he's taking over the
- 37:41Speaker 2: play calling from his offensive coordinator. Is that going to
- 37:43Speaker 2: be the fix? And what's going on with the offense?
- 37:46Speaker 2: Because it is doing nothing. Six points all in the
- 37:48Speaker 2: first half and a 26-6 home loss to Fresno.
- 37:53Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, it's bleak right now for sure. There's
- 37:55Speaker 6: no really other way to, you know, put that. But
- 37:58Speaker 6: I think they had to make some sort of big change,
- 38:01Speaker 6: whether it was– changing the quarterback or making some other
- 38:04Speaker 6: big personnel change um they had to do something and
- 38:07Speaker 6: you know maybe they wanted to be booked maybe.
- 38:09Speaker 11: One of seeing a quarterback change here on friday.
- 38:11Speaker 6: Night but until then i think it was the right
- 38:14Speaker 6: move if only to demonstrate to people that hey like
- 38:16Speaker 6: we are trying something different we're trying something new and
- 38:20Speaker 6: you know who knows if that works out but i
- 38:21Speaker 6: think um just you know at the very least in
- 38:24Speaker 6: the interest of like massaging the way it looks they
- 38:27Speaker 6: had to do something and i'm sure for kirby it
- 38:28Speaker 6: wasn't easy i mean that's He's been friends with Matt
- 38:30Speaker 6: Miller since, you know.
- 38:31Speaker 11: 2010 or 2011 when they were teammates at Boise State. So,
- 38:34Speaker 11: you know, I'm sure it wasn't easy, but, you know,
- 38:36Speaker 11: you got to change something.
- 38:38Speaker 6: And so, you know, especially considering the stable of running
- 38:41Speaker 6: backs that, you know, WCU has. And it not only has, but,
- 38:45Speaker 6: you know, they expanded, you know, all types of resources
- 38:48Speaker 6: over the offseason to retain those guys. Kirby Voorhees and
- 38:52Speaker 6: Maxwell Woods and William Pumalasi. So to not really getting
- 38:55Speaker 6: the most out of them when your head coach, the
- 38:58Speaker 6: guy who became the OC at Missouri, and he really
- 39:01Speaker 6: made his bones get the most out of the running
- 39:03Speaker 6: backs there, to not even getting the most out of
- 39:05Speaker 6: your three guys that you feel like could really do
- 39:08Speaker 6: some damage, I think was definitely part of the reason
- 39:10Speaker 6: why they made this move.
- 39:12Speaker 11: And, again, who knows? It might not make a huge difference, but,
- 39:14Speaker 11: you know, I guess I think they had to do
- 39:15Speaker 11: something for sure.
- 39:16Speaker 2: Is it the play calling or the players, Greg, for
- 39:18Speaker 2: Washington State's offense?
- 39:22Speaker 6: Well, I think it's been both at different times. I
- 39:25Speaker 6: said this on me and Jamie's podcast, but um, I,
- 39:28Speaker 6: the way I thought it was like kind of ironic
- 39:29Speaker 6: to make this change after this last game against Fresno state,
- 39:33Speaker 6: because I like, uh, there's been a lot of games
- 39:36Speaker 6: where the play calling, I think has really took them
- 39:38Speaker 6: out of some good spots.
- 39:39Speaker 11: This is not one of those games to me. This
- 39:41Speaker 11: was the players is.
- 39:42Speaker 6: Not really executing to the best of their abilities. I mean,
- 39:44Speaker 6: you saw there was a kid to pick this. You
- 39:47Speaker 6: saw receivers running routes, short of the sticks. You saw, uh,
- 39:51Speaker 6: receiver dropping balls. You saw some of the decision-making that
- 39:55Speaker 6: a panic has really struggled with. And so, you know,
- 39:59Speaker 6: as much as, you know, Matt, you know, with that
- 40:01Speaker 6: going on, Matt Miller could call the perfect play, but
- 40:04Speaker 6: if the guys don't execute it, or if Katie Bennett is,
- 40:07Speaker 6: you know, few in his eyes from the pocket, it's
- 40:09Speaker 6: not going to work out.
- 40:11Speaker 11: So I thought, you know, but I think that, you know,
- 40:13Speaker 11: there's been.
- 40:13Speaker 6: Earlier times in the season where the play calling has
- 40:15Speaker 6: been more of the problem. I mean, I think about,
- 40:17Speaker 6: The Washington game, I think about the K-State game where
- 40:20Speaker 6: they tried these up-and-middle runs with the running backs that
- 40:22Speaker 6: were never really going to go anywhere, but they stuck
- 40:24Speaker 6: with it several times after that became clear. So I think, like,
- 40:28Speaker 6: in those days, it was more about the play calling,
- 40:30Speaker 6: but I think the last couple weeks, it's definitely been
- 40:32Speaker 6: more about the players not really executing, for sure.
- 40:35Speaker 2: Also yesterday, Washington State Athletics announced that they have– this
- 40:38Speaker 2: is on my read for the statement– has signed a
- 40:40Speaker 2: multi-year partnership with FanWord, the leading AI technology and storytelling
- 40:43Speaker 2: company in college sports. As part of the agreement, Washington
- 40:46Speaker 2: State will implement FanWord Assist, a proprietary AI-powered communications platform
- 40:51Speaker 2: to support storytelling efforts across every corner of the athletic department.
- 40:55Speaker 2: Quote from the athletic director, John Harlow, we are always
- 40:58Speaker 2: looking for innovative ways to tell our stories to student athletes, coaches,
- 41:00Speaker 2: and programs. FanWord's technology will help us elevate storytelling by
- 41:03Speaker 2: improving our efficiency. Computers replacing people. Of all the schools,
- 41:10Speaker 2: the Edwin R. Murrow School, Journalism School at Washington State,
- 41:14Speaker 2: renowned as it is. What's your reaction to this as
- 41:18Speaker 2: a journalist as am I?
- 41:21Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, I was, I mean, I didn't even
- 41:23Speaker 6: go here. I'm not from anywhere around here. But just
- 41:25Speaker 6: knowing professors, even knowing students that I've come across in
- 41:29Speaker 6: my time here, like, it's disappointing for sure.
- 41:32Speaker 4: I mean, they.
- 41:33Speaker 11: I mean, they want us to believe, it's important to
- 41:34Speaker 11: know here, they want us.
- 41:35Speaker 6: To believe that it's more about it being a, quote, tool.
- 41:40Speaker 6: You know, one of the PR guys called me yesterday
- 41:42Speaker 6: and said, you know, it's more of a tool.
- 41:43Speaker 11: It's not going to replace any job.
- 41:45Speaker 6: It's not going to take away any opportunities from J-School kids. But,
- 41:51Speaker 6: you know, this has not really come to pass yet. Like,
- 41:54Speaker 6: I just think there's so much... ambiguity in the way
- 41:57Speaker 6: this is going to be implemented and facilitated that you
- 42:00Speaker 6: lead people to kind of draw their own conclusions about
- 42:03Speaker 6: what it's going to look like. I guess they might
- 42:04Speaker 6: not even know right now. I mean, they might say,
- 42:06Speaker 6: they might have an idea for what, for the way
- 42:08Speaker 6: it'll go, but right now there's a lot of ambiguity
- 42:10Speaker 6: in the way it's going to be implemented. You know,
- 42:12Speaker 6: I think with Bandword, I did a lot of research
- 42:15Speaker 6: on this yesterday and, They have two main products, one
- 42:18Speaker 6: of which is FanWord Stories and one of which is
- 42:21Speaker 6: FanWord Assist, which is the one that WSU is signing
- 42:24Speaker 6: on for.
- 42:25Speaker 11: And it seems to be– the difference seems to be.
- 42:26Speaker 6: That FanWord Stories are more just like completely AI-generated stuff,
- 42:31Speaker 6: whereas FanWord Assist is more– kind of what it sounds like,
- 42:34Speaker 6: like the assists coming in from AI, whether it's with
- 42:37Speaker 6: player bios on their website or game recaps or even
- 42:43Speaker 6: the whole feature story thing and making it out editorial content,
- 42:46Speaker 6: I think was just, that's really just strange.
- 42:50Speaker 11: I think it shows just, you know, people do not
- 42:52Speaker 11: rock with AI in that way. People do not like
- 42:54Speaker 11: generative AI in that way.
- 42:57Speaker 6: I mean, you see, I mean, there's certain AI that's useful,
- 43:01Speaker 6: like I don't know if you guys know what Otter is,
- 43:03Speaker 6: but it's like an audio translation service.
- 43:04Speaker 11: I use that all the time.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Now, that's different. When you're transcribing quotes and having AI using–
- 43:11Speaker 2: rather than producing original work content based on someone else's work,
- 43:14Speaker 2: that's a completely different deal. But, yeah, go ahead. I'm sorry.
- 43:17Speaker 5: Right.
- 43:18Speaker 2: No, no. Yeah.
- 43:19Speaker 6: And so the point is that I'm not like– 110%
- 43:22Speaker 6: against AI, but like I said on our podcast, degenerative
- 43:26Speaker 6: AI to assist in whatever form it takes.
- 43:29Speaker 11: That's the thing. They want us to believe it's more
- 43:32Speaker 11: of a tool.
- 43:33Speaker 6: I start actually going to be replacing any, like, humans
- 43:36Speaker 6: writing things.
- 43:37Speaker 11: The threshold should be zero.
- 43:40Speaker 6: Like, there's no, like, amount that we should be, like,
- 43:42Speaker 6: putting up with this when it comes to generative AI,
- 43:46Speaker 6: you know, seeping into the workflow of, you know, communicators. Like,
- 43:50Speaker 6: that's what's weird to me is that, like, the people that,
- 43:54Speaker 6: you know, WSU and their PR guys and comms guys, like,
- 43:58Speaker 6: you know, we might be on different sides of the profession,
- 44:01Speaker 6: but it's still the same kind of work, you know
- 44:03Speaker 6: what I mean? And so like for them to like
- 44:05Speaker 6: be not behind it, but, you know, putting forward a
- 44:08Speaker 6: financial stake in it, I just think shows that, you know,
- 44:12Speaker 6: you don't really understand where people are on this AI thing,
- 44:14Speaker 6: which is like I said, people do not like this
- 44:16Speaker 6: stuff and they responded accordingly.
- 44:19Speaker 11: Like, like their, their announcement did not go over well.
- 44:22Speaker 11: And so to hear, to hear, yeah. And so to hear,
- 44:25Speaker 11: I was telling Justin before, but like, To hear that,
- 44:28Speaker 11: you know, because they're like, well, you know, all these
- 44:29Speaker 11: other 207 schools are using it. Like, if someone jumps
- 44:32Speaker 11: off a bridge, are you going to do it? You
- 44:34Speaker 11: know what I mean?
- 44:35Speaker 2: Greg, McClatchy told us the same thing, and then they
- 44:39Speaker 2: brought AI in six months ago, and then two weeks
- 44:42Speaker 2: ago cut 40% of the workforce. I'm living it. Let
- 44:45Speaker 2: me tell you. Forget it.
- 44:47Speaker 11: It's really disappointing.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Thanks, man. I'm with you. I'm 110% against AI, unlike
- 44:53Speaker 2: you said you weren't. I am. In journalism, I'm absolutely.
- 44:56Speaker 4: Out of it.
- 44:57Speaker 2: Thanks, man.
- 44:57Speaker 11: Yeah, of course.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Enjoy Ogden, Utah, Friday night, Washington State at Utah State.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Thanks for coming on. Of course, man. Thanks for having me.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Greg Woods of the Spokesman Review. Lots to talk about
- 45:08Speaker 2: in a short amount of time at Washington State that
- 45:10Speaker 2: happened yesterday. Now back to the NFL with Jory Epstein,
- 45:12Speaker 2: a senior NFL writer for Yahoo Sports. He joins us
- 45:15Speaker 2: every week at this time thanks to Zeke's Pizza and Zeke'sPizza.com.
- 45:19Speaker 2: She talked to Kenneth Walker this morning. We'll talk about
- 45:21Speaker 2: that next on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 45:36Speaker 1: It's time for Greg's weekly visit with Yahoo Sports senior
- 45:39Speaker 1: NFL reporter Jory Epstein.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Brought to you by Zeke's Pizza. Stop by Zeke's all season.
- 45:45Speaker 1: Long when a team from Washington is playing and enjoys

- 45:52Speaker 1: new Calabrian Chili Pizza out now. Now with Jory Epstein.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Here's Greg. Our thanks to Zeke's Pizza and Zeke'sPizza.com. Fancy
- 46:05Speaker 2: opening for Jory. I'm still getting used to it, Jory.
- 46:07Speaker 2: How are you?
- 46:08Speaker 7: I am doing well.
- 46:10Speaker 4: And yeah, that opening is awesome. You and Jessamyn don't
- 46:13Speaker 4: do anything halfway. So we are ready to go.
- 46:16Speaker 2: We are ready to go. We go all the way. Jory,
- 46:18Speaker 2: joining us every Tuesday at 11 o'clock. Thanks to Zeke's Pizza,
- 46:22Speaker 2: usually from New York City, where she lives. You talked
- 46:25Speaker 2: to Kenneth Walker this morning, you told me. And I'm
- 46:27Speaker 2: going to ask you, first of all, what did you learn?
- 46:28Speaker 2: And I'm going to ask you, second of all, had
- 46:30Speaker 2: the Seahawks made a mistake in not re-signing him?
- 46:34Speaker 7: Yes, I did talk to.
- 46:35Speaker 4: Kenneth Walker this morning. And I think two things I
- 46:39Speaker 4: learned are, one, the way he talks about Andy Reid's
- 46:41Speaker 4: creative play.
- 46:41Speaker 7: Calling was really fun to hear.
- 46:43Speaker 4: That's not a knock on Seattle. I mean, clearly Clint Kubiak,
- 46:47Speaker 4: who he had last year, is doing a great job
- 46:49Speaker 4: in Las Vegas. But it was kind of fun when
- 46:51Speaker 4: I was actually at their opener and said, asked him
- 46:53Speaker 4: about one of the plays they ran where he was
- 46:55Speaker 4: on the field. And I was like, him next to
- 46:57Speaker 4: Patrick Mahomes and Justin Fields on this.
- 46:59Speaker 7: Like three-point standoff.
- 47:02Speaker 3: That.
- 47:03Speaker 4: So I think that the way they're scheming him is effective.
- 47:07Speaker 4: The threat of Patrick Mahomes is effective. And the usage
- 47:10Speaker 4: is just crazy.
- 47:11Speaker 7: I mean, he did mention.
- 47:12Speaker 4: That part of his belief in the uptick in production
- 47:15Speaker 4: is because of the uptick in opportunities. And when I
- 47:19Speaker 4: looked at it, if you look at how many, he's
- 47:21Speaker 4: on pace for like 420 touches, which would be just
- 47:25Speaker 4: almost double what he had in a.
- 47:27Speaker 7: Year in Seattle.
- 47:28Speaker 4: And so the production is on pace for Almost Double,
- 47:31Speaker 4: which again, on pace and getting there are very different things,
- 47:34Speaker 4: but so are the opportunities.
- 47:36Speaker 7: So it is always interesting to think how much is this.
- 47:38Speaker 4: A question of the guys finally getting the opportunity versus
- 47:42Speaker 4: The guy's producing in a different way. As I released
- 47:44Speaker 4: your question about Seattle and whether they should have kept him,
- 47:46Speaker 4: I guess it depends what you were going to pay
- 47:49Speaker 4: him and how much you believed in what he could do.
- 47:51Speaker 4: He hasn't sustained this level of play over any of
- 47:54Speaker 4: the previous four seasons. And so I'm not sure he's
- 47:57Speaker 4: not going to, but if Seattle said, Hey, we can't
- 47:59Speaker 4: keep everyone from the Superbowl team. And Kenneth over the
- 48:02Speaker 4: course of the years, hasn't always sustained that level. Then
- 48:05Speaker 4: what's the, what's the, value at which it's worth it
- 48:08Speaker 4: what do you think greg because i mean it's four
- 48:10Speaker 4: weeks and he's got an insane run of i mean
- 48:13Speaker 4: he's averaging averaging 134.3 rushing yards per game and 155.3
- 48:18Speaker 4: yards from scrimmage per game they already have more touchdowns
- 48:22Speaker 4: from scrimmage six than he had all of last year
- 48:25Speaker 4: in the regular season so it's crazy numbers but is
- 48:28Speaker 4: that what it's going to look like in december when
- 48:30Speaker 4: you're really signing him for in january and february Right.
- 48:33Speaker 2: And the Seahawks had him in a job share with
- 48:35Speaker 2: Zach Charbonnet last year because they didn't think he would
- 48:37Speaker 2: last 17 games as the lead back in injury history.
- 48:40Speaker 2: And they made a value proposition. At running back, they
- 48:42Speaker 2: didn't want to pay up to $ 15 million a year,
- 48:45Speaker 2: which is what he got from Kansas City. It was
- 48:47Speaker 2: a three-year, $ 43 million contract with up to $ 45 million
- 48:50Speaker 2: count and guarantees. And they said, well, we would rather
- 48:53Speaker 2: draft a first-round pick and have him at rookie minimum salary,
- 48:55Speaker 2: rookie contract salary for four years, just like they had
- 48:58Speaker 2: Walker for four years. So It's easy to say in
- 49:01Speaker 2: the past, looking back, oh, yeah, they made a mistake. But, yeah,
- 49:04Speaker 2: the money, the Seahawks were never going to pay $ 15
- 49:06Speaker 2: million a year to a running back philosophically. They did
- 49:10Speaker 2: have the cap space to do it. They just decided
- 49:12Speaker 2: not to. But, yeah, you can't argue with the result.
- 49:14Speaker 2: This is the workload and playing time that he wished
- 49:17Speaker 2: he was having last year with Seattle.
- 49:21Speaker 7: Absolutely.
- 49:21Speaker 4: And I mean, I'm like annoyingly logical for fans who
- 49:24Speaker 4: are emotional, but.
- 49:25Speaker 7: The Seahawks, despite the.
- 49:27Speaker 4: The rotation of running backs that have been going through
- 49:30Speaker 4: the game the last four weeks, I mean, you still
- 49:32Speaker 4: have basically 100 yards in three games, 97, 162, and 138.
- 49:35Speaker 7: Their run game.
- 49:37Speaker 4: Was a problem against the Commanders, but despite not having him,
- 49:40Speaker 4: despite not even having Jadarian Price healthy, despite Zach Charbonnet
- 49:43Speaker 4: not being back, which I think you were probably there
- 49:45Speaker 4: when Mike McDonald said yesterday that he.
- 49:49Speaker 7: would return to team drills this week.
- 49:50Speaker 4: I mean, I do think that there are enough people
- 49:53Speaker 4: in that room that would, Kenneth Walker had been better
- 49:57Speaker 4: through four weeks, probably if he did what he did
- 49:59Speaker 4: for Kent city right now, but is he going to
- 50:01Speaker 4: be that much better than the group as a whole,
- 50:03Speaker 4: that it's worth the money? I understand the case against it.
- 50:07Speaker 2: And if you missed it earlier, Joe Mixon, apparently not
- 50:09Speaker 2: signing with the Seahawks practice squad, Adam Schefter, VSPN reporting
- 50:12Speaker 2: the Seahawks have decided not to after the physical, of course,
- 50:14Speaker 2: the foot injury is what had him out of the
- 50:16Speaker 2: league last year. Jory Epstein, she joins us every Tuesday
- 50:20Speaker 2: thanks to Zeke's Pizza on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. She's
- 50:22Speaker 2: a senior NFL writer for Yahoo Sports. All right, the
- 50:26Speaker 2: 4-4-0 teams include the Chiefs. And in the NFC, it's
- 50:28Speaker 2: the 49ers and the Vikings. I'm going to ask you,
- 50:31Speaker 2: are all three real to you? The Vikings have been
- 50:34Speaker 2: doing it with almost no offense. And the 49ers in particular,
- 50:39Speaker 2: what surprises you or maybe doesn't surprise you? Brock Purdy
- 50:42Speaker 2: is playing lights out. But the 49ers come in here
- 50:45Speaker 2: on Sunday. How real do you think the Niners are
- 50:47Speaker 2: as a threat in the West now?
- 50:51Speaker 4: I think the 49ers are absolutely real. And to me,
- 50:54Speaker 4: from a play-calling standpoint and a talent at their peak
- 50:57Speaker 4: health standpoint, the 49ers have been a problem for years.
- 51:01Speaker 4: But health has been a problem for them being a
- 51:04Speaker 4: problem for years. And so that's what's really had me
- 51:07Speaker 4: question them more recently. Now, I would say this year,
- 51:10Speaker 4: it's not bothering me in the same way because they're
- 51:13Speaker 4: producing all this despite their injuries. It's not, oh, they're
- 51:16Speaker 4: getting a little bit lucky on the injury front. I mean,
- 51:18Speaker 4: what Brock Purdy's doing with his 11 passing touchdowns, that
- 51:21Speaker 4: tie for the most in the league, he's done that
- 51:24Speaker 4: without a lot of his receivers, including Deshaun Stribling, their
- 51:27Speaker 4: top pick, who they really liked and they really thought
- 51:30Speaker 4: was going to be effective, had a great preseason. He's
- 51:32Speaker 4: out for a while. I think it's like 10 weeks.
- 51:34Speaker 4: And so you don't have him. You don't have other
- 51:36Speaker 4: guys who are going down. And Brock Purdy's still doing that.
- 51:38Speaker 4: He's still got the best pass every Morris just showed up.
- 51:43Speaker 4: And so I think that they've kind of stabilized some
- 51:46Speaker 4: elements of their defense. They're explosive on offense and they're
- 51:50Speaker 4: doing it against teams who yes I get that the
- 51:52Speaker 4: Rams game that they played in Australia there's a jet
- 51:55Speaker 4: lag element and I get that the Broncos have some
- 51:57Speaker 4: degree of injuries on defense but those are still two
- 52:00Speaker 4: teams who were in the conference championship last year and
- 52:03Speaker 4: you're beating those teams and you're injured too so I
- 52:06Speaker 4: think like I mean it almost felt like this week
- 52:08Speaker 4: in the NFL we should just say okay everything you
- 52:11Speaker 4: see this week let's put an asterisk on and yes
- 52:13Speaker 4: it counts toward your record but don't think that any
- 52:15Speaker 4: team performance necessary seven or eight because of how many
- 52:21Speaker 4: players around the league have these short-term injuries this week
- 52:24Speaker 4: um so i think that the niners are absolutely a
- 52:27Speaker 4: problem seattle's to this i mean i'll have my.
- 52:30Speaker 7: Eyes on the game that you'll be at this week
- 52:31Speaker 7: i guess.
- 52:33Speaker 5: Jory, I'm looking ahead to this matchup, and the Seahawks,
- 52:36Speaker 5: even in a win situation, were extremely disappointed, specifically with
- 52:39Speaker 5: the penalties there. I mean, you've been covering this league
- 52:42Speaker 5: for a really long time. How did they clean up
- 52:45Speaker 5: what happened? And what do you think happens outside of
- 52:48Speaker 5: our eyes when they're looking to clean up things throughout
- 52:51Speaker 5: the week and not have seven personal fouls?
- 52:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's interesting because I've always heard coaches
- 52:58Speaker 4: talk about penalties. the pre or post pre-snap penalties and
- 53:03Speaker 4: after the play. And then there's the during the play penalties,
- 53:07Speaker 4: those competitive penalties. And I think the nature of the
- 53:09Speaker 4: Seattle system, particularly on defense is this is the physical aggressive,
- 53:14Speaker 4: like constantly playing with youth group. And when you have that,
- 53:17Speaker 4: you're kind of always playing on the edge and.
- 53:18Speaker 7: Sometimes you're going to go over it.
- 53:20Speaker 4: But I think when you have that many penalties and
- 53:22Speaker 4: end up seeing the consequences of those in a Chargers
- 53:25Speaker 4: team able to fight back.
- 53:26Speaker 7: It is a reminder.
- 53:27Speaker 4: So I wouldn't say I'm super concerned that they can't
- 53:30Speaker 4: get over this, but I do think that to suggest
- 53:32Speaker 4: there's going to be no penalties is probably not that
- 53:35Speaker 4: realistic with the nature of the play style.
- 53:37Speaker 2: So while we're talking about officiating, what is going on
- 53:41Speaker 2: with Aiden Hill attacking a player for accidentally rumping into him?
- 53:44Speaker 2: And then a, a Nemeto lands, an official for cussing
- 53:48Speaker 2: out Trey McBride, our NFL officials become like major league
- 53:52Speaker 2: baseball umpires with these egos and the, the, the ref show. What's,
- 53:56Speaker 2: The league, they went and acted swiftly in suspending those officials.
- 54:00Speaker 2: But what's going on there?
- 54:03Speaker 4: Yeah, it's interesting because going back to the spring, there
- 54:06Speaker 4: was a lot of conversation about officiating in the league,
- 54:08Speaker 4: and that was because the NFL Referees Association's collective bargaining
- 54:12Speaker 4: agreement with the league was up. And one of the
- 54:14Speaker 4: big sticking points between the league and the union for
- 54:17Speaker 4: the refs was the degree of accountability that the league
- 54:19Speaker 4: would be able to hold the refs to.
- 54:22Speaker 7: The refs association did.
- 54:23Speaker 4: Not feel like they should have some of these strict
- 54:26Speaker 4: standards for improvement that the league wanted, especially given this
- 54:29Speaker 4: isn't a full-time job for these guys. And the league
- 54:32Speaker 4: felt like, Why are we having accountability standards for players
- 54:36Speaker 4: and coaches in so many parts of the league and
- 54:38Speaker 4: not having it for officiating? Now, that was not about
- 54:40Speaker 4: the interpersonal conduct with players at the time. That was
- 54:44Speaker 4: about if you miss a call, if you don't see something,
- 54:48Speaker 4: if you call the wrong call, etc., Now we're kind
- 54:51Speaker 4: of seeing this situation evolve where I think that the
- 54:55Speaker 4: tension that built in the spring is continuing to bubble
- 54:58Speaker 4: over and we're seeing some of the impacts of that now.
- 55:01Speaker 4: I think it's interesting because whether or not those suspensions
- 55:06Speaker 4: were warranted, it's It's pretty unlike the NFL in recent
- 55:09Speaker 4: history to actually suspend officials, much less two officials and
- 55:14Speaker 4: one of them for two games. And the cynical part
- 55:16Speaker 4: of me covering the league for 11 years now believes
- 55:19Speaker 4: that it's because of the public uproar and the fact
- 55:23Speaker 4: that at least one of these is caught on video
- 55:25Speaker 4: that we're seeing this suspension. I mean, if you don't
- 55:27Speaker 4: have the video evidence and you don't have the public
- 55:30Speaker 4: calling for this, J.C. Tretter, the head of the NFL
- 55:33Speaker 4: Players Association, calling for it, I don't think that... I'm
- 55:36Speaker 4: of the belief that the suspension is not primarily because
- 55:39Speaker 4: of the actions. It's primarily because the actions embarrass the league.
- 55:42Speaker 4: And that is a big factor here. So I think
- 55:45Speaker 4: that if we have continued episodes like this, it could
- 55:49Speaker 4: get ugly. And I think also there's this element of, well,
- 55:53Speaker 4: what is the point at which a player and a
- 55:56Speaker 4: coach can say something to an official, but the official
- 55:58Speaker 4: not say something back because they're Players are often fined
- 56:02Speaker 4: for things they do in games, but not necessarily things
- 56:04Speaker 4: they do.
- 56:04Speaker 7: Specifically toward officials.
- 56:06Speaker 4: Also, these players are just like so hyped up on
- 56:10Speaker 4: testosterone or whatever it is in the heat of the game.
- 56:12Speaker 4: I mean, think about the game of football generally. You
- 56:14Speaker 4: can physically assault someone on the football field and that'd
- 56:16Speaker 4: be fine, but when you leave the lines, you can't.
- 56:18Speaker 4: And so I think when you kind of blur these lines,
- 56:20Speaker 4: you say, well, what is the proper conduct? And where's
- 56:22Speaker 4: the line between players and officials?
- 56:25Speaker 2: Interesting context from Jory Epstein, senior NFO. Reporter for Yahoo Sports,
- 56:29Speaker 2: that's a good point about the labor and the situation
- 56:33Speaker 2: in the offseason perhaps bubbling over there. All right, we
- 56:36Speaker 2: saw him on Sunday, and for three quarters, the answer
- 56:38Speaker 2: to this is yes. But has Justin Herbert broken, and
- 56:41Speaker 2: did Mike McDonald break him with the Chargers?
- 56:45Speaker 4: Yeah, it's interesting. I don't have a sense that people
- 56:47Speaker 4: at the Chargers think he's broken for what it's worth.
- 56:50Speaker 4: I think there's almost this opinion that even if, yes,
- 56:53Speaker 4: there were Seahawks penalties this past week, Against the Bills
- 56:58Speaker 4: and then against Seattle, there's not two times that they've
- 57:01Speaker 4: lost by one score, despite these 0-4 series. The turnovers
- 57:05Speaker 4: are certainly a problem. The offensive line is constantly a
- 57:08Speaker 4: problem there. And I don't think that Justin Herbert's having
- 57:11Speaker 4: a strong season by any stretch, but in terms of
- 57:14Speaker 4: are things fixed? They were down 20-3 and they come
- 57:18Speaker 4: back to make it a one-score game.
- 57:20Speaker 7: At the end.
- 57:20Speaker 4: I think they believe that's actually encouraging relative to the
- 57:24Speaker 4: beginning of the season.
- 57:25Speaker 7: Rather than discouraging.
- 57:26Speaker 4: I just really am surprised because Mike McDaniel has this
- 57:31Speaker 4: whole plan going into the season of, hey, offensive lines
- 57:34Speaker 4: are not as strong in the league as edge rushers
- 57:37Speaker 4: and pass rushers generally. And so you've got to get
- 57:39Speaker 4: the ball out quickly, rely on those yards after the
- 57:41Speaker 4: catch for your explosives rather than longer developing plays. And
- 57:45Speaker 4: that would save Justin Herbert from some of the pressure
- 57:47Speaker 4: he's going to be under. That has not happened. Justin
- 57:50Speaker 4: Herbert's turnovers have been a huge problem. And the offensive
- 57:54Speaker 4: line had four rookies at one point this past week.
- 57:57Speaker 4: And so you're seeing all of this. So I think
- 57:59Speaker 4: they have a long way to go. A lot of
- 58:01Speaker 4: it injury driven, but I also think there are certain
- 58:03Speaker 4: teams in the league who's They're kind of injured by design.
- 58:06Speaker 4: I don't mean they want players to be injured, but
- 58:07Speaker 4: they're just willing to be physical enough in their practices
- 58:10Speaker 4: that they think it's worth it, even if they have
- 58:12Speaker 4: some attrition. And I think the Chargers have shown us
- 58:14Speaker 4: through the years there's always going to be this physicality,
- 58:16Speaker 4: so they need to.
- 58:17Speaker 7: Prepare for this.
- 58:28Speaker 2: Michael Penix Jr. and the Falcons. I mean, if he's
- 58:30Speaker 2: got Bajon Robinson running like 145 yards he did last
- 58:34Speaker 2: night in the Superdome, Penix is back now from the injury.
- 58:38Speaker 2: The Falcons offense looks pretty formable, no?
- 58:42Speaker 4: Oh, absolutely. I mean, it's interesting because Michael Penix Jr.
- 58:46Speaker 4: actually played pretty well when he was healthy last year.
- 58:49Speaker 7: He just wasn't able to stay healthy.
- 58:51Speaker 4: So to me, the question is not whether he's able
- 58:52Speaker 4: to function as a high-level NFL quarterback. It's whether he's
- 58:56Speaker 4: able to stay healthy enough to have.
- 59:00Speaker 4: When you have a quarterback in who can run that
- 59:03Speaker 4: offense functionally like Michael Penix Jr., all of a sudden
- 59:06Speaker 4: defenses can't just stack the box against B.
- 59:09Speaker 7: John Robinson.
- 59:09Speaker 4: They can't sell out to defend against the run.
- 59:12Speaker 7: And B. John has a lot of opportunities. And so he.
- 59:15Speaker 4: Had 213 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns against the Packers.
- 59:18Speaker 4: And last night you go to 147 and two against
- 59:21Speaker 4: the Saints. And I don't think that we should be
- 59:24Speaker 4: concerned that this is going to fall off anytime soon.
- 59:26Speaker 4: So So, I mean, credit to Kevin Stefanski, their head coach,
- 59:29Speaker 4: and Tommy Reese, the offensive coordinator and play caller. I
- 59:31Speaker 4: think that compared to the group they had in Cleveland
- 59:35Speaker 4: when they were coaching there last year, this is probably
- 59:37Speaker 4: a group of personnel that better fits what they want
- 59:40Speaker 4: to do.
- 59:40Speaker 7: And we're seeing that as they get Michael Penix back.
- 59:43Speaker 2: So, Penix is back, and it looks like he's going
- 59:46Speaker 2: to roll. I mean, he looked like the Washington Huskies Penix.
- 59:49Speaker 2: He had 15 completions for 220-plus yards last night in
- 59:50Speaker 2: that game against 45 points against the saints. So what
- 59:55Speaker 2: do they do with Tua? I mean, could you see
- 59:57Speaker 2: him trading him at the deadline to a quarterback needy team?
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: Their deadline's in a month.
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: That's a great question, Greg. And I probably shouldn't be
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: thinking about that more than I have. I mean, I
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: think you should consider it, but on the other hand, I,
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: Backup quarterbacks are a really important position in the league.
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: I mean, when you think about the fact that there's
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: like 22 starters on a team, so by nature, the
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: first backup is a 23rd guy on the team if
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: we're counting offense and defense.
- 1:00:24Speaker 7: I've talked to general managers in.
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: This league who believe that the backup quarterback position is
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: the 11th most important position on the league, which is
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: to say like more important than half of your starters
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: just because of how quarterback-centric and quarterback-revolving this league is.
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: And also, if you have an injury history at quarterback.
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: I don't think that's where the focus is. You can
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: feel comfortable that Michael Penix can stay healthy. I hope
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: he does. And it'd be a great problem to have
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: that extra in the quarterback room. But I think when
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: you saw how bad it looked without Michael Penix or
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: Tua in there, I think you have to keep that
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: kind of insurance if you want to be able to
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: feel like you can have a playoff run.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: And that's why they signed him in the first place.
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: Good point. By the way, Jory, our friend Keith on
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: 253 Text Line, Tacoma Dodge Text Line, says, how is
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: this segment not called Jory's NFL Stories?
- 1:01:12Speaker 7: Thanks, Keith. Love a good rhyme.
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: Now we already have the intro.
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: Right. Why not? Let's just roll with the whole damn show.
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: All right. So where are you at this week? You
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: staying home? Going to Meadowlands? What do you got this week, Jory?
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: There's a chance I go to Jets-Browns.
- 1:01:29Speaker 7: I have a credential in case.
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: I'm interested in the Browns, but I'm not super convinced
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: that what they do against the Jets will be very convincing.
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: And then I've also, I have the, if the Raiders
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: had won, I would have been in New England this week,
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: but they didn't. So that's where I've gone. So honestly,
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: I'll definitely be watching the game you're at, because I
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: think from a playoff standpoint, when you think of the
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: games this week, There's not a bigger game than the
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: Seahawks-Miners game.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: Come on back out. We'll get you some gluten-free Zeke's Pizza.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: You know where it is. You've run by it. Come
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: on back anytime. Good to talk to you, Jory. Thank you.
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: We'll talk to you next Tuesday.
- 1:02:05Speaker 7: You too, Greg and Desmond. Talk to you soon.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Thank you, Jory Epstein, our friend from New York, senior
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: NFL writer for Yahoo Sports. She joined us every Tuesday
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: at 11 o'clock. Thanks to Zeke's Pizza and Zeke'sPizza.com. Yeah,
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: they have gluten-free pizza. We checked.
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: Almost every pizza place does these.
- 1:02:20Speaker 11: It is.
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: We're pretty lucky in Seattle. I have a wife who's
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: vegetarian and gluten free. And we go to other places
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: on vacation. Like we went to Nashville in August. Not
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: as easy.
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: Even New York. I'm a New York person.
- 1:02:33Speaker 5: And, you know, the pizza places, it's always like, you know,
- 1:02:36Speaker 5: you got a Roma here.
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: You got this there. It's all family names and everything.
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: They all cater to that community now, even though it
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: used to be just.
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: Like, you get what you get.
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: Really? You want the light beer or the dark beer?
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: Mike's Pizza in Manhattan will have gluten-free now?
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: Probably.
- 1:02:51Speaker 6: Wow.
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: John's is the best one, by the way.
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: John's Pizza.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: John's Pizza.
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: I think I've been there.
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: Yeah, it's right in Times Square. It's right by the
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: hotel we stayed at for the Super Bowl.
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: We will be there. Jessamyn and I will be there.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: Army-Navy Friday on December the 11th. Same hotel, by the way.
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: So right by John's. We're going to be in Times Square.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: We will go to John's Pizza. We will report on
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: whether they have gluten-free at the Army-Navy game when USAA...
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: Sponsors KJR at the Army-Navy game December 11th. That is
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: the end of the Factor Fiction contest sponsored by Lucky
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: Eagle Casino and Hotel. And up next is your chance
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: to win $ 1, 000 from Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. On
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: our next installment of Factor Fiction Plus, your chance to
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: be a part of the show, 49451 on the Coma
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: Dodge text line. Thanks, Keith, for Jory's NFL stories off
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: the text line. And our talkbacks on our talkback app,
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: the Red Microphone. We'll play those back next on 93.3
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: KJR FM. Hey, Greg.
- 1:03:53Speaker 12: I do appreciate the question this morning in regards to
- 1:03:56Speaker 12: Kenneth Walker about asking if your listeners' hindsight is 20-20.
- 1:04:01Speaker 12: And I am just leaving a message here to confirm
- 1:04:06Speaker 12: my hindsight is 20-20, just like yours. So, yes, I
- 1:04:12Speaker 12: do believe we did make a mistake by not re-signing
- 1:04:15Speaker 12: Kenneth Walker.
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: Go Hawks!
- 1:04:18Speaker 13: Love Kenneth Walker. He had six, seven good games in
- 1:04:21Speaker 13: four years. He made those games count, though. The timing
- 1:04:24Speaker 13: was impeccable. But he wasn't going to come back here.
- 1:04:27Speaker 13: We were never going to give him the ball 25
- 1:04:29Speaker 13: times a game.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: Here's the deal. Right now, yeah, I would love to
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: have Kenneth Walker.
- 1:04:35Speaker 11: But ask me after we play.
- 1:04:38Speaker 13: The Chiefs if he makes it through that game or
- 1:04:41Speaker 13: if he's even available for that game, and I'll tell
- 1:04:43Speaker 13: you whether or not we made a mistake or not.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: God bless you all. That was nice. Nice way to
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: sign off on that.
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: I agree.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: With that. 49451 on the Comodage text line has more
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: on Kenneth Walker and our question of whether you think
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: it was a mistake. 425, when the Seahawks let Kenneth
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: Walker lead the team, I thought it was a terrible
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: decision at the time, and I realize there are multiple
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: factors involved, as you have discussed. However, I also believe
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker is proving a point to the Seahawks by
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: letting him go and possibly working even harder than ever
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: to prove them wrong and that they should have kept him.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: My thoughts. Well, my thoughts are that he's getting the opportunity,
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: which makes it look like he's trying to prove him wrong.
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: But he's just, as Jory outlined, he's on pace for
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: twice as many touches that he's ever gotten in the
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: NFL with the Seahawks. He was getting 200 or so,
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: and now he's at 420?
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: We're four games in, though. Is this sustainable?
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: And there are many on the text line who say
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: it's not. And there are a couple that Like the
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: 4-2-5 stay, why stay? McDonald would probably still be using
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: him as a timeshare running back and putting him from
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: the game at the goal line for Wilson or Helani.
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: Coach wasn't a big fan of Walker until they needed him.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: I'm not sure the coach wasn't a big fan of him.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: I think they were in preservation mode, but that was
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: the wrong year for Walker in his mind to be
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: in preservation mode. 7-1-4, SoCal. Huntington Beach. That's my man, Greg.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: I was okay with letting K-9 walk because it was
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: injury history, but he was criminally unutilized by the Seahawks,
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: and now the Chiefs are reaping the benefits because he's fresh.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: That stings. Oh, and I saw this coming and drafted
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: him all my fantasy leagues. Good for you. Yeah, good
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: for you. You got that right. Yes, the 425 says
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: the team absolutely messed up by not re-signing Walker or
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: trying to. Shahid looks like he got his money and
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: isn't going to put his body on the line by
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: hitting the holes and kick returns that get him to
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: the house. Hmm, that's an interesting point of view. And
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: fair catching when no one was within 10 yards. I
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: have noticed him fair catching, but usually it's with someone
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: around him.
- 1:06:47Speaker 10: Right.
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: I think it's been a good judicious decision each time
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: I've seen it.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: 253 makes the point we've, in Seattle, have had bad
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: luck with Notre Dame running backs. C.J. Proseis.
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: Oh.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: Who mentioned C.J.
- 1:07:02Speaker 7: Proseis? C.J.
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: Was vastly injured. He just had a hard time staying healthy.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: Now, I will say this. We are only three games
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: into Jadarian Price's career. I think it's way too early
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: to say anything definitive of where he's going to be
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: with the Seahawks over the next four years. So the
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: fact he's injured puts this on layaway for another month
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: at least. But when he comes back, if he's healthy,
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: let's see. Let's see what Price looks like before we
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: can determine whether signing or not signing Walker was a mistake.
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: I have plenty of belief in Jadarian Price.
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: So we'll see. For 253, regarding Vinod Kozla's comment, never
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: say never, he is accustomed to speaking with investors. He
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: speaks like a fiduciary. I was one for 20 years,
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: one that avoids definitive statements about future performance of actions.
- 1:07:53Speaker 6: Hmm.
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: That's an interesting way to look at it, a fiduciary. Hey,
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: if you're interested in $ 1, 000, you better listen up because
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: here comes another chance right now. We're set to go.
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: Glad you're with us.
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: It's your shot at our weekly $ 1, 000 and the $ 10, 000
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: grand prize.
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: It's Fact or Fiction.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: Proudly presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: day feels lucky. Fact or Fiction is on. Sports Radio 93.3,
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: KJR FM. And Jessamyn McIntyre.
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: Has the comms. I do.
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: So you know it's NFL.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: Yes, you do.
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: So I go back and forth several times throughout this,
- 1:08:35Speaker 5: especially this early in the week, because there's only been
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: a couple of picks that have been made so far.
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: So here's what I'm doing. I'm going with my heart, Greg.
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: Oh, we're going back to the Jets?
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: Nope. Oh. Actually, Ian already took that game, and he
- 1:08:53Speaker 5: picked against them. However, I like to leave some games open,
- 1:08:57Speaker 5: maybe on Thursday.
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: I will change my tune.
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: But I like to put every game out there that
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: I can besides picking against what someone else has picked already.
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: I'm going with Washington minus three at the New York Giants.
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: That heart.
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: That heart.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: She has a lot of friends, including her best one,
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: who's in the commander's organization. Yes, exactly.
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: And so I just look at the way that.
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: They, I mean, they are coming so fast. They are
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: coming off a long trip. They were just in London.
- 1:09:28Speaker 5: I'm very well.
- 1:09:29Speaker 7: Aware of that.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: They got waxed by the Colts.
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: And they did. That was a tough one.
- 1:09:33Speaker 5: So I think they're going to bounce back just like
- 1:09:35Speaker 5: we saw them do after a rough start against the Seahawks.
- 1:09:38Speaker 5: We saw them bounce back against them. So I think
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: they're going to do the same exact thing. And I'm
- 1:09:43Speaker 5: not really very confident in the Jameis Winston chart.
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: They're 3-1, the Giants are.
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: I know.
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: I think it's fool's gold. I think it's fool's gold.
- 1:09:55Speaker 5: And I think that Washington has a lot to build upon,
- 1:09:57Speaker 5: especially seeing what Marriott is capable of.
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: So I'm going with.
- 1:10:01Speaker 5: Washington minus 3.5, hosting.
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: The Giants, by the way.
- 1:10:05Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: The game's in Landover.
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: So it's kind of a pick-em because you get three
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: points traditionally as the home team. So it is very
- 1:10:14Speaker 5: up in the air. What will happen, I am taking
- 1:10:16Speaker 5: them minus 3.5.
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: 3.5.
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: Yep, it is three and a half.
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: If you agree with Jessamyn McIntyre, Washington minus three and
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: a half at home over the Giants, meaning they will
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: win by four or more points, text FACT to 49451.
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: If you disagree, text FICTION to 49451. You have about
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: 11 minutes now. And just as a reminder for context,
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: this show is leading the station, if I'm not mistaken.
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: I believe we still are. Yeah, because, yes, here, hold on.
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: I'll look right now.
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: Winning records every week, three and two last week.
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: Show standings. We are tied. Well, no, we're in first place.
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: Yes, we are.
- 1:10:47Speaker 5: Yeah, Softie and Dick and Chuck are actually, well, it updates.
- 1:10:51Speaker 5: So I hadn't looked at it this morning yet. But yes,
- 1:10:53Speaker 5: Softie and Dick and Chuck are tied for second. And
- 1:10:57Speaker 5: Ian is in fourth place.
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: Okay, so if you want to win $ 1, 000, text FACT
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: to us during the show, 49451. If you want to
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: win $ 1, 000 at the 235 Factor Fiction, text FICTION. I'm
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: just giving you a little hint here. Ian's in last place.
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: I know you're listening, Ian. Oh, he is.
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: You can bring it up again when he comes in
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: here in person.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: The commander's minus three and a half at home over
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: the Giants. If you agree, text FACT to 49451. If
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: you disagree, text FICTION. to 49451. We'll have another pick
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: tomorrow at 1135. Remember, it's 735, 1135, 235.
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: And 335.
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: Every week, someone can win $ 1, 000 thanks to the Lucky
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: Eagle Casino and Hotel. And at the end of the contest,
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: whoever has won the most times will win $ 10, 000, 10 large,
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. Back to the
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: text line, 49451. A lot of people commenting about Well,
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: it was Joe Mixon. There were some people who were
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: not happy with Joe Mixon's background.
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: And that's not even a thing anymore.
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: So if you missed the news from about an hour,
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: half hour ago, Adam Schefter of ESPN reporting that the
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: Seahawks have backed out of their agreement with Joe Mixon
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: and are not going to sign with the practice squad
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: after he took a physical with the team. There was
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: a mysterious foot injury last year in which he did
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: not play at all in the 2025 season. He got
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: it in preseason with the Houston Texans. And I read
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: what John McClain, the longtime beat writer in Houston, said
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: it was the most mysterious injury he'd ever seen in
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: the NFL that no one would talk about. And now
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: it looks like the Seahawks have said, nope, no thanks.
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: Looking into further review, we don't want to sign even
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: to the practice squad because of health issues after the physical.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: So that leaves Robert Henry Jr., who they signed yesterday,
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: or excuse me, they agreed news-breaking last night to a sign.
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: They haven't announced that deal yet. Off the commander's practice squad,
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: an undrafted rookie from Texas, San Antonio, is the one
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: reinforcement to the running back room with Jadar and Price
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: going on injured reserve. 206, probably not worth re-signing Walker,
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: assuming the Hawks used him how they did last year.
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: That's true, you wouldn't pay $ 15 million for a halftime player.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: No one could predict how they'd use him like the
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: Chiefs are, currently based on how they historically used Walker.
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: 425 says, yes, the Seahawks badly mistaken by not re-signing Walker,
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: but it seemed like everyone was in agreement about it. Also,
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: Sam is not playing well. Super Bowl hangover, that was
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: not his best. And the interceptions have been ugly ones. Yes,
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: two of the three have been really ugly.
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: Yeah, they have.
- 1:13:30Speaker 5: I mean, it was dueling interceptions at the beginning of
- 1:13:33Speaker 5: that game last week, which was really, really weird.
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: First time in NFL history that a game began with
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: two interceptions on the first two plays by opposing quarterbacks.
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: 206 says, seems ironic that the Hawks always say they
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: want to run first, then Walker goes to the team
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: with arguably the number one quarterback in the league and
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: is kicking butt. We talked about this when he signed
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: with the Chiefs, how Andy Reid uses his tailbacks in
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: the pass game specifically. He doesn't take out his lead
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: running back and bring in a third down back. His
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: lead running back is usually the third down back to
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: throw to. And Andy Reid has a route tree for
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: that back. He's not just a leak-out, check-down dude. He's
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: got nines and sevens and fives and sixes and deep
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: crosses and all the route tree routes for a running back.
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: And that's what makes it unique what Kenneth Walker's doing
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: now because the Seahawks did not do that, obviously, and
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: certainly not last year. 206 says, no, I think letting
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker go was the right move. I don't think
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: he is a bell cow running back. I just don't
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: see him being able to keep his current pace. Plus,
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: he isn't the best fit for the zone blocking run scheme.
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: That's interesting, too. The scheme not to fit there. 425 says,
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: I don't think K-9 is going to last the entire
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: season the Chiefs are using hat. He's playing 75% of
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: the snaps, and as Jory Epstein just told us in
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: the last segment, I'm paced for 400. 20 touches this year,
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: twice as many as he ever got in Seattle. Up next,
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: Ian Furness, who may be in the building. I don't know.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: Is he at Crackin' Ville? I'm not sure if I've
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: seen him yet, but he's going to tell us what's
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: on his show next. You still got about eight, seven,
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: eight minutes to go to text in your fact or
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: fiction pick for this hour.
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: And one clarification.
- 1:15:09Speaker 5: I know I mentioned Marcus Mariota. My reference was as
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: what a backup can do for Washington.
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:15:16Speaker 5: I know he got hurt during the Colts game. So
- 1:15:19Speaker 5: that was why I referenced him. And he's questionable, but
- 1:15:22Speaker 5: probably doubtful at this point.
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: So where do they go at quarterback?
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: They're at their third string.
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: And you're still taking the Washington minus three and a half?
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: I don't have any choice anymore. I am aware of that,
- 1:15:32Speaker 3: and I'm still taking them.
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: Yes, I am.
- 1:15:33Speaker 11: I am.
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: Faith.
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: I'm not going nowhere.
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: Faith and friends. Her friend Dan Quinn and the Commanders
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: coming off the trip to London. Minus three and a
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: half at home over the Giants. If you agree, text
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: FACT to 49451. If you disagree and think the Giants
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: will either win or lose by fewer than three points,
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: text FICTIONED. Three or fewer points. Text FICTION to 49451.
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: He ends up next to tell us what he's got
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: on his show on 93.3 KJRFM. Hi, welcome back. Greg Bell,
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: Justin McIntyre with you on 93.3 KJRFM where the question
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: of the day we've been talking about, including with Jory
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: Epstein of Yahoo Sports, senior NFL writer who talked to
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker this morning, interviewed him, and we talked about that.
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: The question of the day has been on the text line.
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: I'm going to just pose it to Ian for us
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: right now. Did the Seahawks make a mistake in not
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: re-signing Kenneth Walker? I can't go there yet. That's what
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: I think. What's wrong with this chair? There we go.
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: We're going, folks.
- 1:16:41Speaker 10: Yeah, I can't go there yet. I think Jory said
- 1:16:44Speaker 10: it right. How he's used here, how he would be
- 1:16:48Speaker 10: used here, and all those things. I think she nailed it,
- 1:16:51Speaker 10: and I don't think we go there yet. Just one
- 1:16:54Speaker 10: man's opinion.
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: Three games of Jadarian Price so far. Yeah, I mean,
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: that's the issue.
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: That's the issue. So let me ask you the issues
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: you need in running back.
- 1:17:05Speaker 10: He's your best guy available. You take him in the
- 1:17:07Speaker 10: first round. The red flags with just that, I mean,
- 1:17:11Speaker 10: Hugh brought it up from the second he got drafted.
- 1:17:14Speaker 10: The body type, how he's built, in that position, there
- 1:17:19Speaker 10: would be a concern about injuries. And sure enough, boom.
- 1:17:25Speaker 10: He's been hurt since the second he got here.
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: Yeah. Right? He was hurt in training camp.
- 1:17:29Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:17:30Speaker 10: He was hurt in the preseason, and he's been hurt
- 1:17:31Speaker 10: in the regular season. And he can't hold on to football.
- 1:17:35Speaker 10: That's the concern.
- 1:17:36Speaker 14: And he plays the position where most guys get hurt.
- 1:17:38Speaker 14: in the shortest career span. Right, and that's the thing.
- 1:17:40Speaker 14: I don't know if that's a Ken Walker problem. I
- 1:17:43Speaker 14: think that's just a Jadarian Price problem.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: That's the issue. Which becomes a Seahawks problem. Which becomes
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: a Seahawks problem. But right, right. I mean, what you
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: did and stuff like that in terms of drafting him.
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: So is it sustainable to crack an averaging six goals
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: a game against everybody beside the Edmonton Oilers?
- 1:17:59Speaker 10: Well, they've played three and they've scored six against the
- 1:18:02Speaker 10: same team twice.
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: Is that an AHL team in Calgary? No, you know what?
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: They're not good.
- 1:18:07Speaker 10: They'll be at the bottom of the Western Conference this year,
- 1:18:11Speaker 10: more than likely. If they're not at the bottom, they'll
- 1:18:14Speaker 10: be near the bottom. But tonight's a good barometer. I
- 1:18:20Speaker 10: thought Saturday was too in Edmonton, and they played well
- 1:18:23Speaker 10: in Edmonton.
- 1:18:24Speaker 12: They did.
- 1:18:24Speaker 10: They got the worst possible bounce you could ever have.
- 1:18:28Speaker 10: They're three, four minutes away from getting at least a
- 1:18:30Speaker 10: point out of that game, keeping them down on the
- 1:18:33Speaker 10: score sheet. Did a terrific job, and then a puck
- 1:18:36Speaker 10: that's rimmed into the zone hits a guy's leg, McDavid,
- 1:18:39Speaker 10: of course, and goes to Dreisaitl, who's alone in front
- 1:18:42Speaker 10: of the net. Just an unlucky bounce.
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:18:44Speaker 10: Happens in hockey all the time. Happens in every sport
- 1:18:46Speaker 10: all the time. Tonight's a good barometer, though. I mean,
- 1:18:48Speaker 10: Vegas was a Stanley Cup finalist last night.
- 1:18:50Speaker 8: Year.
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 1:18:50Speaker 10: And Seattle's had success against them. They were 3-1 against
- 1:18:52Speaker 10: them last year. So good barometer test tonight.
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: What's 640 start is on national TV? No, no.
- 1:18:58Speaker 10: So they've done what the Kraken did. And I know
- 1:19:01Speaker 10: they consulted the Mariners on this, which I think is
- 1:19:03Speaker 10: a good idea. They and a lot of major league
- 1:19:06Speaker 10: baseball teams have done this. They go to the 640 start.
- 1:19:08Speaker 10: I mean, how many times Mariners, like you're driving around,
- 1:19:10Speaker 10: it's like, oh, it's 3.30 in the afternoon. The Mariners
- 1:19:12Speaker 10: are about ready to start a baseball game in New
- 1:19:14Speaker 10: York or Boston or wherever.
- 1:19:15Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:19:16Speaker 10: Um, the earlier starts, uh, I don't think I looked,
- 1:19:20Speaker 10: I've looked a couple of times. I don't think I've
- 1:19:22Speaker 10: seen any others in the NHL yet, but the Kraken said, Hey,
- 1:19:26Speaker 10: we're going to start these games earlier, whether you're watching
- 1:19:28Speaker 10: on TV or coming to the arena weeknight games, Monday
- 1:19:31Speaker 10: through Thursday, uh, they'll start it at six 40.
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: What's the thinking?
- 1:19:35Speaker 10: Same thing as the Mariners get, get, you know, people
- 1:19:38Speaker 10: for the most part, if they're already here in the city,
- 1:19:40Speaker 10: they're not going to go home and come back. Um,
- 1:19:44Speaker 10: and if you are coming in to go to the game,
- 1:19:46Speaker 10: you get out of there earlier.
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: Like it's saves you a half an hour. And when
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: people are going to bed early. On a work night.
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: On a work night.
- 1:19:52Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: It's exact.
- 1:19:53Speaker 10: And they, they, I know they consulted with the M's
- 1:19:55Speaker 10: and I know it's worked well for, for Mariners.
- 1:19:57Speaker 11: Right.
- 1:19:58Speaker 10: So they're going to, they're going to give this a go.
- 1:20:00Speaker 10: So they'll start earlier tonight.
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: So, yeah, I think it's, I think it's a good idea.
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: I really do.
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: Seven, it's.
- 1:20:05Speaker 10: Things change over the years, right? Remember games used to
- 1:20:08Speaker 10: always start at 8 when you and I were growing up?
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: Yeah, 735 was standard.
- 1:20:12Speaker 10: It's funny, the East Coast still has a lot of
- 1:20:14Speaker 10: 730 games in the NHL and NBA, but baseball, I
- 1:20:17Speaker 10: know the Yankees, Red Sox, others started at 640. So
- 1:20:20Speaker 10: they're going to do that here in Seattle for hockey.
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: You can tell it's a cracking hockey game because my
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: pregame guy on TV is in his white colored shirt
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: and tie. I'm in play-by-play tonight, so it's a different moment. Oh,
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: you're doing play-by-play!
- 1:20:33Speaker 3: Oh!
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: That's because it's an Amazon night for John's room?
- 1:20:36Speaker 10: Yeah, he's on his way to Canada. John's, I think
- 1:20:39Speaker 10: I got 15 this year, so this is the first
- 1:20:41Speaker 10: of 15.
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: Oh, even more reason to watch tonight. There you go. Yeah,
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: Kraken Hockey Network. Yeah, there we go. Beside play-by-play at
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: Kraken's Vegas. Can't wait for all the fun feedback. That's
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: always good. Yeah, I'm sure. Stay off social media. What
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: do you got going today? We're going to check in.
- 1:20:55Speaker 10: The Cougs are going to join us, Alex and MK.
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 1:21:01Speaker 10: Maybe the worst offense at Wazoo since the first or
- 1:21:04Speaker 10: second year of Paul Wolfe.
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: Not maybe. I think it is.
- 1:21:07Speaker 3: It's the worst I've seen.
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: It's awful.
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: Since 2012. It's awful.
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: Kirby Moore is now going to call the plays. Good call.
- 1:21:13Speaker 10: Should have been doing it from the start. So we'll
- 1:21:15Speaker 10: talk about that. How bad things are in Pullman. So
- 1:21:18Speaker 10: if you'd like to hear how bad things are in Pullman,
- 1:21:20Speaker 10: Husky fans, you can share our misery and we'll share
- 1:21:23Speaker 10: your misery.
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: How's that? John Lund, 49ers week. John Lund at 2 o'clock.
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: That'll be a dandy. That'll be fun.
- 1:21:31Speaker 10: He's already texting me and tweeting stuff out and just
- 1:21:34Speaker 10: a knucklehead. That's appointment listening, folks. We'll get into 49er
- 1:21:37Speaker 10: hate at 2 o'clock. Actually, we'll do that off the
- 1:21:40Speaker 10: top of the show as well, but we'll do that
- 1:21:41Speaker 10: certainly at 2 o'clock with the line.
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: It should be fun. Plus, a Kraken ticket Tuesday. Giving
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: away tickets. So, we'll go. Cougs and Bang Bang Niner game.
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: That's what Ian's got up next. Greg Bell, Justin Beyer,
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: thanks for listening. We'll do it again tomorrow. Ian's up next.
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: He's got Factor Fiction at 235 on 93.3 KJRFM.
