- 0:47This is Gracelyn Keller with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:50podcast, and we are recording live at the
- 0:522024
- 0:53fall payer issues roundtable.
- 0:55I'm joined by Adrienne Moore, who is the
- 0:57senior vice president of finance at Banner Health.
- 1:00Adrienne, thanks for being here. We'd love to
- 1:01start our conversation off by having you introduce
- 1:04yourself a little bit further.
- 1:06Yes. Banner Health is an integrated delivery network
- 1:10based in Arizona.
- 1:12We have about 14,000,000,000
- 1:14in annual revenue, more than 30 hospitals, and
- 1:17ambulatory care sites, that make up over 500
- 1:20locations.
- 1:22Wonderful. Well, thanks for joining me. And let's
- 1:24start our conversation today talking about growth goals.
- 1:27So from improving member experience and expanding value
- 1:31based care to controlling costs, payer executives have
- 1:34ambitious growth goals for the rest of 2024
- 1:37and looking into the new year ahead. In
- 1:39your role, what is your top priority and
- 1:41how are you planning to get there?
- 1:44I think our top priority is growth in
- 1:46value plans right now.
- 1:48Value is really what's going to change
- 1:52the way that we practice health care,
- 1:54and we'll continue to focus on that.
- 1:58Other health plans out there, we've seen in
- 2:00the media,
- 2:01things like
- 2:03margin over members, and I don't know that
- 2:06growth is the the right word for what's
- 2:08happening right now. It's,
- 2:10more of a sustainability
- 2:12that we're seeking rather than growth at this
- 2:14moment.
- 2:16That margins over members comment came from another
- 2:19payer. That is not Banner's mission, I do
- 2:21wanna clarify.
- 2:22We are are really out to serve our
- 2:25members and focus on value.
- 2:28Wonderful. And going off of that, at an
- 2:30industry level, how would you describe the biggest
- 2:32barriers to effectively serving and engaging members? And
- 2:36what opportunities do you see for large scale
- 2:38improvements? And then how are you applying all
- 2:40of that into your current strategies?
- 2:43So the big barriers for Banner, they're the
- 2:45same for everyone in the industry. We've got
- 2:47an older, sicker population.
- 2:50We've got deferred care from the pandemic.
- 2:53We see
- 2:54digestive cancers on the rise. We've seen a
- 2:57lot of things that really have high cost,
- 2:58and then our innovations are expensive right now
- 3:01too. So we're seeing increasing drug costs.
- 3:04GLP ones are the big story of the
- 3:06day, but
- 3:08forget about obesity for a moment. They're costing
- 3:10a lot in treatment of diabetes too, and
- 3:12they're driving up, member costs. So
- 3:15inflation and cost pressures
- 3:17are really the the top headwinds, and this
- 3:20population is going to continue to get larger
- 3:22as we move into 2030 when the rest
- 3:24of the boomers
- 3:25finally hit retirement age.
- 3:28And shifting gears just slightly toward leadership,
- 3:32keeping pace in today's dynamic health care landscape
- 3:35is challenging. So I'd love to know a
- 3:37piece of advice you'd share with other peer
- 3:39leaders to grow their businesses while keeping members
- 3:42top of mind.
- 3:44I'd say we all need to continue to
- 3:46focus on value, but we also need to
- 3:48just do the right things.
- 3:50We've got the cost and quality components of
- 3:53the equation. We need to be working on
- 3:55both of them. Cost is really hard right
- 3:57now, but anything we can do to improve
- 3:59quality, improve outcomes, improve members' lives, we should
- 4:02just continue to focus on that. I do
- 4:05believe that financial performance follows doing the right
- 4:08thing.
- 4:10Wonderful. And as we wrap our conversation
- 4:13here today, are there any closing remarks you'd
- 4:15like to share on the podcast?
- 4:18So as long as I've been in healthcare,
- 4:20Medicare insolvency
- 4:22has been looming on the horizon.
- 4:24There have always been expensive new technologies
- 4:27that change the game, and we adapt,
- 4:30think about how much imaging has changed over
- 4:33the last 25 years. Robotic surgery,
- 4:36things like CAR T,
- 4:38There's always a new expensive
- 4:40innovation on the horizon. But I think we're
- 4:42at this turning point now where we've got
- 4:45innovations like AI
- 4:47and cost pressures.
- 4:49And all of these things are gonna come
- 4:50together, and we're at an inflection point where
- 4:53we can find the right mix to make
- 4:55a sustainable future for health care. And I
- 4:58would challenge all of the leaders out there
- 5:00to be thinking of how we use this.
- 5:02It's not a crisis. We're not leveraging a
- 5:04good crisis here, but we're leveraging a confluence
- 5:07of events that are putting pressure on us,
- 5:09but arming us with tools at the same
- 5:11time to come out of this with a
- 5:13better health care model.
- 5:15Wonderful. Well, Adrienne, thanks so much for taking
- 5:17the time to be here today and join
- 5:19me on the Becker's healthcare podcast. Again, we
- 5:21are live at the 2024
- 5:23fall payer issues round table.
- 5:25My pleasure. Thanks, Grace.
