Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We're going to Dan Bolton, our silverfer and Farms chief
- 0:02Speaker 1: executive for our rural catch up. So we've had the
- 0:05Speaker 1: dairy headline numbers doing quite well, but what about the
- 0:09Speaker 1: red meat sector? What about the Trump's and Trump's tariffs
- 0:14Speaker 1: and also our disputes with Canada. It's great to have
- 0:17Speaker 1: Dan back on the program. Dan, good morning, Good morning, Ryan,
- 0:21Speaker 1: great to talk to you. Let's start with the whole
- 0:24Speaker 1: Trump tariff thing. How didn't you guys worried about that?
- 0:29Speaker 2: I mean, clearly there's some big pre election promises there
- 0:31Speaker 2: around blanket tariffs and they created some big headlines here
- 0:34Speaker 2: in New Zealand and sort of made us sit up
- 0:37Speaker 2: as a large export nation in the US market is
- 0:41Speaker 2: a really important market for our sheep, beef and venison farmers,
- 0:44Speaker 2: and that market's going extremely well for us. But when
- 0:47Speaker 2: our views, there's still a lot of water to go
- 0:49Speaker 2: under the bridge between now and the twentieth of January
- 0:51Speaker 2: and whether New Zealand will actually be affected and whether
- 0:55Speaker 2: those tariffs are going to be more targeted versus blanket
- 0:58Speaker 2: and we're sort of seeing, you know, they're definitely going
- 1:01Speaker 2: to be focusing on nations that is a trade of
- 1:04Speaker 2: balance with the US, and luckily New Zealanders in the
- 1:07Speaker 2: US is quite a balanced trade position, and I think
- 1:10Speaker 2: for US, the US is very very short on beef
- 1:13Speaker 2: at the moment, you know, and they're going to be
- 1:15Speaker 2: relying heavily on us over the next few years. So
- 1:18Speaker 2: you know, I think for US, there's a lot of
- 1:19Speaker 2: water to go under the bridge. The chances of a
- 1:22Speaker 2: blanket tariff is is probably less likely than we think,
- 1:26Speaker 2: but we are watching it very closely, and we're also
- 1:29Speaker 2: seeing you know, consumers in the US also, you know,
- 1:32Speaker 2: are very up in arms around the impact of increasing
- 1:35Speaker 2: food prices with those as well, so we're monitoring it.
- 1:39Speaker 2: You know, a lot of waters to go under the bridge.
- 1:41Speaker 2: But you know, as farms, we're really good at sort
- 1:44Speaker 2: of managing sort of geopolitical and trade changes. You know,
- 1:48Speaker 2: we export to over sefty countries.
- 1:50Speaker 1: You've got a bit you've got to be on top
- 1:51Speaker 1: of that. You've got you when you're when you're a
- 1:55Speaker 1: really exported like us, how is how how are exports
- 1:59Speaker 1: doing generally in the sixth at the moment? How are
- 2:00Speaker 1: exportstone how are we.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Preparing We've just come off our farmer roadshows and we've
- 2:05Speaker 2: shared a lot of optimism as we move into twenty
- 2:08Speaker 2: twenty five. You know, we're seeing some big global supply
- 2:11Speaker 2: dynamics swimming back into our favor, which is going to
- 2:13Speaker 2: be good for our farmers. And then what we're also
- 2:16Speaker 2: seeing on the back of climate change and some you know,
- 2:18Speaker 2: other large producer nations, food security is becoming a real
- 2:22Speaker 2: concern for some of our high value customers offshore. So
- 2:24Speaker 2: that's another positive sign for New Island. And so you know,
- 2:27Speaker 2: we start to see that see both of those play out,
- 2:30Speaker 2: and you know, already in the Q the last quarter
- 2:32Speaker 2: of this year, we're seeing land pricing recover well, you know,
- 2:35Speaker 2: back up over the eight dollar mark, and that's favorable,
- 2:38Speaker 2: and we're seeing that continue into into twenty twenty five.
- 2:42Speaker 2: The UK is going to be short, and we're seeing
- 2:44Speaker 2: some good year on the year price and on beef,
- 2:47Speaker 2: you know, some record pricing out the farm gate at
- 2:50Speaker 2: this point in time, particularly off the back of the
- 2:52Speaker 2: US being very short, and we're seeing that going to
- 2:54Speaker 2: be continuing for some time as well. So lots of
- 2:58Speaker 2: tailwinds which our farmers desperately need. So we're looking forward
- 3:02Speaker 2: to a pretty exciting twenty twenty five.
- 3:05Speaker 1: This Canada's dispute that we've gotten. We've had Todd McLay
- 3:08Speaker 1: over in Canada meeting with them to talk about it
- 3:10Speaker 1: in the last couple of days. Anything to do with
- 3:12Speaker 1: red Meter or is this all a dairy thing.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it's all a dairy thing, so I think we're
- 3:17Speaker 2: pretty safe there.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Nice all right, Dan, thank you very much for being
- 3:20Speaker 1: with us. Really appreciate it. Dan Bolton, SilverFin Farms, Chief Executive.
