- 0:00Speaker 1: We're talking to you. It's more like Hulk too, and
- 0:03Speaker 1: Captain America is like a massive cameo.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Hello and welcome to made the review. Be with you,
- 0:12Speaker 2: Nicky Joe, I'm Joe and I'm Nick.
- 0:15Speaker 3: And today on the podcast, we were talking about Marvel's
- 0:18Speaker 3: newest entry, Captain America, Brave New World, led by Anthony Mackie,
- 0:23Speaker 3: starring brand new Captain America Sam Wilson, at least brand
- 0:27Speaker 3: new for our cinematic franchise. First time Anthony Mackie is
- 0:31Speaker 3: leading a picture on the big screen. Very exciting stuff today, Nick,
- 0:36Speaker 3: heading into this movie, how.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Are you feeling?
- 0:41Speaker 4: I went in with low expectations.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I didn't do a lot of deep diving online trying
- 0:46Speaker 1: to figure out what the plot was, and I think
- 0:48Speaker 1: they were keeping it under wrapped pretty well. But I
- 0:52Speaker 1: kind of did it on purpose because I I didn't
- 0:54Speaker 1: want to be swayed either way. I really liked Captain
- 0:58Speaker 1: America in the Winter Soldier of TV show right, and
- 1:00Speaker 1: this is when, of course Sam gets his Captain America
- 1:04Speaker 1: suit at the end, Right, And I really enjoyed that series,
- 1:09Speaker 1: probably one of my favorite.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Ones they did. But I had no idea what to expect.
- 1:13Speaker 4: With the movie as far as the plot goes.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Going into it, I was like, this movie is probably
- 1:17Speaker 1: gonna be really important moving forward, and I don't want
- 1:21Speaker 1: them to screw it up.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Yeah. I was pumped going in for a lot of
- 1:26Speaker 3: the same reasons that you just said. It felt like
- 1:27Speaker 3: this was going to be important just for setting up
- 1:31Speaker 3: the Avengers down the road, right, because like we still
- 1:34Speaker 3: didn't really have a team, and that was even one
- 1:35Speaker 3: of the plot lines of this movie. But mostly I
- 1:39Speaker 3: was just pumped that Anthony Mackie gets to like get
- 1:41Speaker 3: into the driver's seat and host the show.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Also, upon finding out that we're gonna have Sam Wilson
- 1:49Speaker 3: versus a Hulk, I was pretty interested about what normal
- 1:53Speaker 3: human man would do against something so impossibly challenging.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:02Speaker 3: I cannot say I was totally satisfied on that, but right,
- 2:06Speaker 3: I did love seeing Anthony mackey at the ball at
- 2:08Speaker 3: the Helm.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Here.
- 2:10Speaker 3: In any case, so we did see the movie, we
- 2:13Speaker 3: do we know what happened? You do no know what
- 2:15Speaker 3: the plot is, What was your what are your first
- 2:18Speaker 3: you know takeaways from the movie.
- 2:19Speaker 2: How do you feel about it?
- 2:21Speaker 1: I loved it, exceeded expectations fantastic way to get into
- 2:27Speaker 1: the next couple films in the next phase. Anthony Mackie's awesome.
- 2:33Speaker 1: He crushed it. He's definitely Captain America. Any other anyone
- 2:36Speaker 1: who disagrees as.
- 2:36Speaker 4: A hater and they can they can just go play
- 2:40Speaker 4: with rocks or something. Plot wise.
- 2:44Speaker 1: I honestly, the second they mentioned Celestials, like twenty minutes in,
- 2:49Speaker 1: I was just like, thank you God, finally.
- 2:52Speaker 3: We're finally getting right after some answers, after years of
- 2:57Speaker 3: an alien mass continent until masked emerging in the Pacific Ocean,
- 3:03Speaker 3: someone finally talked about it, like twelve.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Hundred days basically since Eternals came out, and we're finally
- 3:10Speaker 1: we finally got some proper acknowledgment of this what they're
- 3:13Speaker 1: calling Celestial Island, that whole situation, that whole plot line.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Awesome. Loved it, very.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Like Cuban Missile crisis feeling to me. And of course,
- 3:24Speaker 1: like at some point, you know, I forget which X
- 3:27Speaker 1: Men movie it was, but there's an x Men movie
- 3:28Speaker 1: that like covers this.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it's literally the Cuban Missile crisis.
- 3:32Speaker 1: It's the Cuban Missile crisis. Actually, yeah, that was class
- 3:35Speaker 1: so right, first class. Thank you, So this like felt
- 3:38Speaker 1: like this felt like a play on the Cuban Missile
- 3:42Speaker 1: crisis and then also a play on First Class's version
- 3:45Speaker 1: of the Cuban Missile crisis in a way.
- 3:48Speaker 3: But I like, actually, I really yeah, just to jump
- 3:50Speaker 3: in there and not to let go of that thought.
- 3:52Speaker 2: I didn't think about that.
- 3:53Speaker 3: And I really like that idea, considering that this is
- 3:57Speaker 3: supposed to be like a spy thriller first of or
- 4:00Speaker 3: most like, you know, with the way that this movie
- 4:01Speaker 3: like starts right, and to be referencing a part of
- 4:05Speaker 3: history with the Cold War and like how important spy
- 4:08Speaker 3: tactics were back then, that's a good call that that
- 4:12Speaker 3: that's absolutely something that they were trying to reference here.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what it felt like, at least to me,
- 4:18Speaker 1: which is cool. I mean I enjoyed it. I didn't
- 4:20Speaker 1: feel like overdone or anything. You know, it just kind
- 4:22Speaker 1: of was something that popped in my head. It's like, oh,
- 4:24Speaker 1: this is very kind of a weird situation to be
- 4:26Speaker 1: and I feel like we've been here kind of with
- 4:27Speaker 1: some different things before.
- 4:29Speaker 4: But of course, yeah.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Global annihilation, weird situation to be in. Well, you know,
- 4:39Speaker 2: can't imagine that happening dude.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Sorry, really good, It was really a good film.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Animantium is what's inside the celestial being.
- 4:50Speaker 4: We didn't know that before. I don't think.
- 4:54Speaker 2: It was not confirmed in the MCU.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Right, so that opens up tons of questions, but we'll
- 5:00Speaker 4: to that.
- 5:01Speaker 1: What about you, like, what are your thoughts where you're at?
- 5:05Speaker 2: I thought it was okay.
- 5:07Speaker 3: I thought it was like pretty like middle of the
- 5:09Speaker 3: pack for Marvel movies, Like it wasn't it didn't like
- 5:13Speaker 3: wow me as far as like the movie overall, And
- 5:16Speaker 3: I didn't think it was that as bad as like
- 5:18Speaker 3: a lot of people are like yelling about, you know,
- 5:21Speaker 3: like I've seen people say that it's the worst Captain
- 5:23Speaker 3: America movie, which, like maybe there's an argument for that,
- 5:27Speaker 3: Like holy Like I feel like this movie actually makes
- 5:31Speaker 3: more sense than Captain America's Civil War, and I love
- 5:34Speaker 3: Civil War. I think Civil War is super fun. But
- 5:37Speaker 3: as far as like the logic of this movie goes,
- 5:40Speaker 3: I think it makes more sense. You know, Like Zimo
- 5:44Speaker 3: isn't a super genius who has like the superpower of
- 5:48Speaker 3: guessing probability on his side and somehow his plan comes together, right.
- 5:53Speaker 3: People seem to forget that about like Zemo's plan and
- 5:56Speaker 3: about how much it doesn't make sense, and like how
- 5:58Speaker 3: much he just needs like certain people to like make
- 6:00Speaker 3: the exact decision that he needs, right, whereas like at
- 6:04Speaker 3: least like they have the explanation here of that's just
- 6:07Speaker 3: this super villain's power, you know. But yeah, I thought
- 6:12Speaker 3: it was as far as the plotline goes, I thought
- 6:14Speaker 3: it was pretty like run.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Of the mill.
- 6:17Speaker 3: The thing that I thought was absolutely astounding was the
- 6:20Speaker 3: fight choreography for this movie and how Sam feels like
- 6:25Speaker 3: his very own like Captain America, you know, like how
- 6:28Speaker 3: he's incorporating things that he learned his Falcon, He's incorporating
- 6:33Speaker 3: what he's learned as cap and he's made this whole
- 6:36Speaker 3: new hero.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:38Speaker 3: The thing that really stands out to me is that
- 6:40Speaker 3: dog fight in the sky and he's throwing the shield around.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Red Wing catches this shield and like Red Wings following
- 6:47Speaker 3: behind him with the shield, almost as if the shield
- 6:50Speaker 3: is its own character and is flying behind him.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Awesome, freaking awesome.
- 6:54Speaker 3: All the four fight choreography with Sam Wilson is La
- 6:58Speaker 3: Chef's kiss.
- 6:58Speaker 2: It's is so good.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Yeah, they crushed that, especially, like you said, with the
- 7:03Speaker 1: specialization of his suit, right, with all the condent technology,
- 7:08Speaker 1: Like incorporating all that into his fight choreography was sick,
- 7:11Speaker 1: like definitely a highlight of the film for sure, And
- 7:15Speaker 1: it's gonna be really cool to see what other things
- 7:17Speaker 1: they come up with in the future, right because this
- 7:20Speaker 1: is like really his first film as Captain of America,
- 7:22Speaker 1: So I can only imagine, like the choreography can get
- 7:26Speaker 1: pretty wild, and who knows, like what other upgrades he
- 7:29Speaker 1: might get, right, He's kind of like, I don't know,
- 7:31Speaker 1: the MCU was like Batman in a way, right, He's
- 7:34Speaker 1: just got like all this insanely cool tech that and
- 7:38Speaker 1: he's a bad ass when it comes to fighting, So
- 7:40Speaker 1: he's just kind of I don't know.
- 7:42Speaker 4: That's that's what I was thinking during the film.
- 7:43Speaker 1: I don't know how accurate it is, but he's kind
- 7:46Speaker 1: of got like a Batman, asked, vibe with the tech
- 7:48Speaker 1: he's got.
- 7:48Speaker 2: No, I see what you're going for it there.
- 7:51Speaker 3: And this is actually something I want to bring in
- 7:53Speaker 3: in this next segment that we want to talk about,
- 7:56Speaker 3: which was directorial themes. This movie was directed Julius Ona,
- 8:02Speaker 3: who I gotta say for for a big budget movie,
- 8:05Speaker 3: I think he did a fine job.
- 8:08Speaker 2: However, I will say that from what I saw.
- 8:11Speaker 3: In his most notable his most notable movie in his
- 8:15Speaker 3: cinematography are in his background for film was a movie
- 8:21Speaker 3: I absolutely hated, which was The Chlorofield Paradox.
- 8:24Speaker 2: I was really sad to see that he had directed that. Actually,
- 8:27Speaker 2: in any case, this is a huge step up. But
- 8:32Speaker 2: he's not low Joe.
- 8:36Speaker 3: But yeah, so, like as far as as themes that
- 8:39Speaker 3: that is spotted in this one thing, uh, that that
- 8:43Speaker 3: they really that they at least stated, I don't know
- 8:46Speaker 3: if they nailed this toward the end, was that Sam
- 8:49Speaker 3: Wilson is just a man, right, uh and in a
- 8:52Speaker 3: world full of like super beings, aliens and gods uh
- 8:55Speaker 3: and ai, how does how does just a man, just
- 8:58Speaker 3: a human uh step up to all of that?
- 9:01Speaker 2: Right? How does his strength of character at the end
- 9:04Speaker 2: of the day win? Right?
- 9:08Speaker 3: And I thought as far as like giving us an antagonist,
- 9:12Speaker 3: give it presenting like the Red Hulk, I thought that
- 9:15Speaker 3: was really interesting. Now we'll get into the decision on
- 9:18Speaker 3: whether or not revealing that in the marketing was a
- 9:20Speaker 3: good idea, But as far as like our climax goes,
- 9:26Speaker 3: I was really hooked on that idea of like, Okay,
- 9:30Speaker 3: how does normal man actually defeat the most powerful thing
- 9:35Speaker 3: that we really know of physically?
- 9:37Speaker 2: Right?
- 9:38Speaker 1: What did you think of that at the end? Do
- 9:39Speaker 1: you want to get Do you want to talk about
- 9:41Speaker 1: it real quick?
- 9:41Speaker 2: Yeah? I do, So there are more things that I
- 9:45Speaker 2: want to talk about.
- 9:45Speaker 3: But like, as far as this one goes, I think
- 9:48Speaker 3: they I think this was an interesting thing to get into,
- 9:50Speaker 3: and I think it's absolutely crucial for Sam's character, especially
- 9:54Speaker 3: for him to try and live in the shadow of
- 9:56Speaker 3: Steve Rogers, right, who had the super soldier serum. I
- 10:01Speaker 3: don't really think they nailed it in the end, you know,
- 10:04Speaker 3: Like I when when they started, when he brought him
- 10:07Speaker 3: to the cherry blossom trees, I was a little scared.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Oh no, they're gonna try to appeal to his humanity
- 10:13Speaker 3: here with like a speech. And they made a joke
- 10:17Speaker 3: about that, and I was like, oh, that's great, Okay, cool,
- 10:19Speaker 3: we're not doing it. But then they double down and
- 10:22Speaker 3: we're like, no, no, no, we actually are going to do
- 10:25Speaker 3: the cheesy speech where we appeal to your humanity. And
- 10:29Speaker 3: I wasn't super into that. I thought the fight before this,
- 10:34Speaker 3: before that speech was pretty interesting, and like he got
- 10:38Speaker 3: a little scrappy too, right with like the blade.
- 10:41Speaker 2: That stuck in his thigh, he kicks it in.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:43Speaker 3: I was like, yeah, that's what I want to see.
- 10:44Speaker 3: I want to see Sam being resourceful. So yeah, I
- 10:47Speaker 3: was a little disappointed that in the end that's what
- 10:49Speaker 3: they came down to.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:50Speaker 3: I think Sam does need to his strength of character,
- 10:54Speaker 3: does need to be the thing that wins the day,
- 10:56Speaker 3: but maybe not in the come on, fight at your
- 11:00Speaker 3: better than this sort of way.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Yeah, it's tough. Like I love this grappiness and the resourcefulness.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Just like you said, I think it was really interesting,
- 11:09Speaker 1: like how they almost finished the fight right with him
- 11:11Speaker 1: putting the wing like right in his side and like
- 11:14Speaker 1: having to cause so much damage and only a Wakandan
- 11:17Speaker 1: like wing can could could.
- 11:18Speaker 4: Pierce a hulk, I guess, right, And so that was
- 11:22Speaker 4: an interesting way.
- 11:23Speaker 1: And then the car just like gets thrown on top
- 11:25Speaker 1: of him and you're like, Okay, is he actually down,
- 11:28Speaker 1: And of course, like he's not, but he's he's distraught
- 11:31Speaker 1: enough to where he's at the point where it's possible
- 11:34Speaker 1: to talk him down. Now based on all the damage
- 11:37Speaker 1: that's been done to Holtz, someone.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Was getting real low.
- 11:43Speaker 4: Now. The thing the movie did really well.
- 11:45Speaker 1: The whole time was set up the cherry blossoms and
- 11:47Speaker 1: how important it is to him and and and his daughter, right,
- 11:51Speaker 1: So they set that up through the whole film, and
- 11:53Speaker 1: that was the only reason that like it did kind
- 11:56Speaker 1: of land at the end right when he like the
- 11:58Speaker 1: cherry bossom falls in his palm as Sam's finishing his speech,
- 12:02Speaker 1: and that's kind of like an all encompassing like okay,
- 12:04Speaker 1: like it's time for me to calm down.
- 12:08Speaker 4: I think the way that they could have brought it
- 12:10Speaker 4: home completely.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Is if they actually had to Live Tyler show up,
- 12:13Speaker 1: if they had his diet.
- 12:14Speaker 2: I do agree with that. I think Live needed to
- 12:16Speaker 2: show up earlier in the mining.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I think if she would have, if she would have
- 12:19Speaker 1: showed up with like the rest of the police and
- 12:21Speaker 1: the paramedics after he gets stabbed with the wing at
- 12:25Speaker 1: the very end instead of and as Sam is giving
- 12:28Speaker 1: the speech, if she like emerges and doesn't even have
- 12:31Speaker 1: to have a line, if she just emerges there and
- 12:33Speaker 1: like looks at her father, I think then it lands better.
- 12:40Speaker 3: I completely agree with that. The emotional payoff of him
- 12:44Speaker 3: seeing her on the raft I thought was pretty lacking.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Yeah, Like I get that, but I think it would
- 12:53Speaker 1: have had a bigger impact at the very end of
- 12:56Speaker 1: that fight, and it would have landed a little better, right,
- 12:58Speaker 1: and then we.
- 12:58Speaker 4: Wouldn't be having this conversation in this in this way.
- 13:00Speaker 1: But yeah, that's my own that was my thought during
- 13:03Speaker 1: that that battle.
- 13:04Speaker 2: You know, that's a no. I think that's a great thought.
- 13:06Speaker 3: And honestly, like, let's I think like even Sam maybe
- 13:11Speaker 3: even talking to like Live Tyler like earlier in the film,
- 13:14Speaker 3: just to establish some sort of connection there, right, like
- 13:17Speaker 3: have him like in his resourcefulness, knowing like how important
- 13:21Speaker 3: she is, right, Like I don't know, bringing Joaquin Torres
- 13:24Speaker 3: into the climax and like, well, King, I'm really busy,
- 13:26Speaker 3: but like there's someone I need to go pick up, right,
- 13:28Speaker 3: like something along those lines. There was one thing though
- 13:32Speaker 3: in that climax that is part of, like I guess
- 13:35Speaker 3: the theme of that fight, and like, like you said,
- 13:37Speaker 3: how important the terry blossoms were one thing I loved
- 13:41Speaker 3: as a detail. So Red Hulk for for comic accuracy,
- 13:45Speaker 3: Red Hulk is red because he burns so hot that
- 13:50Speaker 3: he turns red. The dude can actually like like the
- 13:52Speaker 3: gamma that he admits is like crazy hot and like
- 13:55Speaker 3: melts things like you can't touch him because of how
- 13:57Speaker 3: hot he is. Oh, which is why when the cherry
- 14:01Speaker 3: blossoms fall on him they burn, which I thought was
- 14:04Speaker 3: an amazing touch, like metaphorically speaking, like it's not even
- 14:08Speaker 3: like the image of these things like have an impact
- 14:11Speaker 3: on him, like he's too angry to even see the
- 14:13Speaker 3: cherry blossoms. Oh you know, like I love that. I
- 14:16Speaker 3: was like, yes, right, yeah, I love the symbolism. Fantastic.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Why the cheesy speech.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Yeah right, there was a couple of those towards the
- 14:25Speaker 1: end I didn't love, like the one when he's sitting
- 14:27Speaker 1: with Torres in the hospital, although Anthony Mackie really delivers
- 14:34Speaker 1: the ending of that speech so well, he's awesome.
- 14:38Speaker 4: He's a phenomenal actor and and and so that was cool.
- 14:41Speaker 4: But you know, I mean, it's it's a Marvel film.
- 14:44Speaker 4: You're gonna get some cheesy, cheesy lines.
- 14:46Speaker 2: And fine, I'm fine with cheesy, Like superheroes movies should.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Be cheesy, right, Yeah, But like I think if you
- 14:52Speaker 3: build up like sam as, like you know, what does
- 14:56Speaker 3: a mortal man do against like a godlike creature? I
- 14:58Speaker 3: think you need to be able to deliver a little
- 15:00Speaker 3: bit more than just like search yourself.
- 15:02Speaker 1: You know, like, yeah, I'm with you for sure. Granted
- 15:08Speaker 1: in a way, he's also defeating Samuel Stearns in this film, right,
- 15:11Speaker 1: Like he's also the the the antagonist, so which.
- 15:15Speaker 3: I do have to get into that as well as
- 15:17Speaker 3: far So Okay, one of the other themes of this
- 15:21Speaker 3: movie is the and we talked about earlier about how
- 15:25Speaker 3: this movie really echoes on previous spy thriller films. Right,
- 15:31Speaker 3: it's trying to build like that sense of paranoia, paranoia
- 15:34Speaker 3: who do you trust in a brave new world?
- 15:36Speaker 2: Right, And with.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Samuel Stearns as our villain, who is you know, mind
- 15:41Speaker 3: controlled people? You know, there's that whole like sleeper cell
- 15:44Speaker 3: like agent of like Cerca, you know, the Soviet Union, Right,
- 15:50Speaker 3: And I thought that was really fun, a really fun
- 15:54Speaker 3: idea for Sam as as a challenge in this right,
- 15:58Speaker 3: But like it kind of felt it fell flat for
- 16:01Speaker 3: me for two reasons. A it kind of felt like
- 16:03Speaker 3: we abandoned the paranoia maybe about halfway into the movie.
- 16:07Speaker 2: And also it felt like.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Sam was really good at foiling Samuel Stearns's plans like
- 16:18Speaker 3: all the time. Yeah, Like for some reason, Sam for
- 16:22Speaker 3: his like, are Samuel Stearns not to be confused with
- 16:24Speaker 3: Sam Wilson. Samuel Stearns, for some reason, cannot compute Sam Wilson.
- 16:31Speaker 1: His probability for what Sam's gonna do way higher than
- 16:34Speaker 1: what Sam actually.
- 16:35Speaker 4: Does, Like it doesn't you know? And now what is that?
- 16:40Speaker 1: Is that supposed to suggest that Sam Wilson is not
- 16:43Speaker 1: like predictable and that he's he's grown enough as a
- 16:47Speaker 1: character and a hero that part of his stick and
- 16:52Speaker 1: part of his superpower, if you will, is the unpredictability
- 16:57Speaker 1: of what he's going to do. That's a cool thought thing,
- 17:00Speaker 1: That's a cool thought to go down.
- 17:02Speaker 2: That's what they were going for. But like, I don't
- 17:05Speaker 2: think it hits.
- 17:06Speaker 4: It didn't hit, really, yeah, it didn't.
- 17:07Speaker 1: It was just like, I mean, the part where they
- 17:11Speaker 1: leave Isaiah Bradley, after he leaves Isaiah Bradley talking to
- 17:14Speaker 1: him and him and tours around the way to Echo
- 17:15Speaker 1: one and this is when they Stern's you know, orders
- 17:20Speaker 1: like you know, or mind controls people to kill the
- 17:22Speaker 1: other guard the other people who tried to assassinate the president.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Like that's when.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Sam and Torres find out that like there's been a
- 17:33Speaker 1: shooting at the prison and they don't turn around.
- 17:36Speaker 4: That makes sense.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Because Isaiah Bradley was very clear. He was like, don't
- 17:40Speaker 1: come back for me, and that was kind of that
- 17:43Speaker 1: made sense that Sam wanted to keep going because you know,
- 17:46Speaker 1: he had already had this conversation and he knows that
- 17:48Speaker 1: there's no way he can help him by going back.
- 17:51Speaker 1: But apparently there was like a ninety percent probability that
- 17:54Speaker 1: he would turn around, Like that didn't make any sense
- 17:58Speaker 1: too probably too high for Sam Wilson in this one
- 18:01Speaker 1: for sure, So so ridiculous.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Yeah, he he was the uncontrollable variable for some reason.
- 18:09Speaker 3: Like like you said, I think the reason is, you know,
- 18:11Speaker 3: his undomitable spirit, which again goes really into the whole
- 18:15Speaker 3: like character thing for Sam and why Steve chose Sam.
- 18:20Speaker 3: But like it, honestly, the way they presented it, it
- 18:23Speaker 3: just makes Samuel Stearns the leader, not look good.
- 18:27Speaker 2: He doesn't he.
- 18:27Speaker 3: Doesn't really come across as a very intimidating presence.
- 18:31Speaker 4: Right.
- 18:33Speaker 1: One quick thing that's cool about Samuel stern Zone and
- 18:35Speaker 1: the actor that plays him, Tim Blake Nelson. He didn't
- 18:39Speaker 1: want to just have like CGI dots on his head,
- 18:42Speaker 1: so he requested to actually have like his head piece
- 18:45Speaker 1: like built.
- 18:46Speaker 4: He wanted to feel the weight.
- 18:47Speaker 1: So it's kind of a practical effect in the film,
- 18:49Speaker 1: because I think there's a lot of CGI in this one, but.
- 18:54Speaker 4: That's one of the practical effects.
- 18:55Speaker 1: That they actually like gave him, like did makeup and
- 18:57Speaker 1: he had like felt the weight of this like crazy
- 18:59Speaker 1: thing that's on one, So that I thought that was
- 19:01Speaker 1: kind of cool. It definitely looked disgusting anyway, quick side note.
- 19:08Speaker 3: Good side note, But I'm glad you brought him up
- 19:11Speaker 3: because I think something that this movie did that was
- 19:14Speaker 3: very ambitious was for a non Avengers film, This movie
- 19:18Speaker 3: introduces a ton of characters. Yeah, so like just to
- 19:22Speaker 3: like rattle some off here, and I have a list here,
- 19:24Speaker 3: so I want to make sure to get everybody. So
- 19:27Speaker 3: we get to see the return of Isaiah Bradley after the.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Winter Soldier and Falcon.
- 19:34Speaker 3: In the Winter Soldier show, right, we see the return
- 19:36Speaker 3: of Samuel Stearns, which, like I that movie is now
- 19:40Speaker 3: for sure canon wild Layla Taylor is introduced. Sidewinder played
- 19:46Speaker 3: by John Carlo Esposito is here. We also got the
- 19:50Speaker 3: return of Joaquin Torres, right, and then of course the
- 19:54Speaker 3: return of Thaddeus Ross, but this time new actor Harrison Ford,
- 20:01Speaker 3: which you know, I wanted to talk about just the
- 20:03Speaker 3: expansion of characters here, but can we take a second
- 20:05Speaker 3: to talk about Harrison Ford.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, I think he's the best part of this film.
- 20:09Speaker 4: Yeah, he's awesome. That was.
- 20:14Speaker 1: I mean, again, I didn't look too much into the
- 20:17Speaker 1: plot and we really just knew what everyone knew from trailers,
- 20:22Speaker 1: and it's Harrison Ford, so obviously a list actor, but
- 20:25Speaker 1: I didn't expect his role to be this big. I
- 20:27Speaker 1: didn't realize it was going to be essentially surrounding his past, right,
- 20:33Speaker 1: like this is he was.
- 20:35Speaker 2: So big in this movie. I would argue he's the
- 20:37Speaker 2: main character, right.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Like most of this stuff going on was his fault
- 20:41Speaker 1: or his doing, and Sam's just kind of trying to
- 20:44Speaker 1: clean up after him the whole time. So interesting, but yeah,
- 20:49Speaker 1: Harrison Ford still got it awesome.
- 20:51Speaker 3: I think it's so funny that Harrison Ford, like if
- 20:54Speaker 3: when people try to talk to him about nerd stuff,
- 20:57Speaker 3: like he's clearly so bothered by it and he's like nerds,
- 21:01Speaker 3: but he's so good at playing in nerds stuff.
- 21:06Speaker 2: It's like, dude, it's not our fault. We're obsessed with you. Okay, like,
- 21:09Speaker 2: stop being so goddamn great.
- 21:11Speaker 4: At this funny. Yeah.
- 21:15Speaker 3: The the scene where he's in the submarine, which the
- 21:19Speaker 3: moment you see him in the submarine, you're like, oh,
- 21:21Speaker 3: this is a high pressure situation. It immediately makes you
- 21:25Speaker 3: think of of Bruce Banner in the Hellic Carrier in Avengers,
- 21:31Speaker 3: when he's like, you brought the most unstable person into
- 21:34Speaker 3: like into an area like this, into a floating thing
- 21:37Speaker 3: in the sky. Right. The scene where he's fighting his
- 21:41Speaker 3: transformation and Stearns is like egging him on.
- 21:44Speaker 2: I thought that was the best scene in the movie,
- 21:47Speaker 2: and it.
- 21:48Speaker 4: Because you thought he was gonna lose it, and then.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Captain America and Torres like are successful with stopping the
- 21:58Speaker 1: jets from shooting each other down and from firing any
- 22:01Speaker 1: more missiles, and so that kind of calms him back down.
- 22:03Speaker 1: So you just get to the point where like he's
- 22:05Speaker 1: about to lose it, and he doesn't. They back off,
- 22:06Speaker 1: and then of course they wait till the very end
- 22:09Speaker 1: to show him losing it, which is brilliant, especially with
- 22:12Speaker 1: the trail, how the trailers.
- 22:13Speaker 4: Were and everything.
- 22:14Speaker 1: I was like, oh, I mean, it's gonna be weird,
- 22:16Speaker 1: like how are they gonna do this? How many is
- 22:18Speaker 1: he going to be Red Hulk the whole time?
- 22:20Speaker 4: Like, what's going on?
- 22:21Speaker 1: We didn't even get to see it till the very end,
- 22:23Speaker 1: which I thought was awesome and a great a great
- 22:26Speaker 1: choice for the film in general.
- 22:28Speaker 3: That leads me on here to our next topic that
- 22:31Speaker 3: I really want to talk about, and that's the marketing
- 22:35Speaker 3: of this movie. I think revealing that Red Hulk was
- 22:39Speaker 3: in this movie it was such a huge mistake. Can
- 22:43Speaker 3: you imagine how shocking it would be to see that
- 22:47Speaker 3: scene where he's fighting the transformation and you let the
- 22:50Speaker 3: audience come to that conclusion like for those who know
- 22:52Speaker 3: who Red Hulk is, right right, and then like later
- 22:55Speaker 3: for those who don't know who Red Hulk is, like
- 22:57Speaker 3: get to see that payoff.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Like this was I think an example of either.
- 23:01Speaker 3: Like extremely bad marketing or really great marketing.
- 23:05Speaker 2: I don't know which one it is, because like, here's.
- 23:08Speaker 3: The thing, there are probably people who came to the
- 23:10Speaker 3: movie to come watch you know, Sam Wilson versus a
- 23:14Speaker 3: Red Hulk.
- 23:15Speaker 4: You know, yeah, I don't know. I almost feel like
- 23:17Speaker 4: they had to do it, because.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Man, it's a tough call on whether that was a
- 23:23Speaker 1: good idea or not to tell us beforehand. I feel
- 23:26Speaker 1: like people might have been more annoyed if they didn't
- 23:28Speaker 1: know it was coming and then all of a sudden,
- 23:31Speaker 1: oh wait, there's just another Hulk now.
- 23:34Speaker 4: Just with like how some people.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Are feeling about the MCU, I feel like if they
- 23:37Speaker 1: didn't know beforehand it was kind of it might have
- 23:39Speaker 1: made them mad in.
- 23:40Speaker 4: A moment rather than excited.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Although if you think about the how the movie went
- 23:45Speaker 1: to your point, that would have been a really cool
- 23:47Speaker 1: way to kind of reveal it without fully going there
- 23:49Speaker 1: until you know, forty minutes later when they finally finish
- 23:52Speaker 1: it off like that.
- 23:52Speaker 4: So I don't know, we'll never know.
- 23:56Speaker 3: There's another universe where we walked into this blind and
- 23:58Speaker 3: then we walked out of thea and we were all like,
- 24:01Speaker 3: can you believe it?
- 24:02Speaker 2: Can you believe they did that?
- 24:05Speaker 3: I think that that could have been especially like for
- 24:07Speaker 3: the theme of like paranoia.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Yea, I think that that really could have.
- 24:13Speaker 4: Done the job.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I think this movie would have rang with a
- 24:17Speaker 3: lot more people or resonated with a lot more people
- 24:21Speaker 3: had that not been all over the marketing. Again, to
- 24:24Speaker 3: the point of the main character of this movie was
- 24:26Speaker 3: Daddius Ross.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Speaking of characters, one you didn't mention, I don't think
- 24:33Speaker 1: uh is it Sabra or Sabra.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Oh Sabra. Yeah, I did not bring her up.
- 24:41Speaker 4: Shira Haas played by Shira has freakin' Red Room. Like
- 24:48Speaker 4: we got like another Red Room.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Warrior essentially, which I was not expecting at all. Like
- 24:54Speaker 1: when we first see her character, I was like, Oh,
- 24:56Speaker 1: I'm gonna be annoyed about her the whole movie this.
- 24:58Speaker 4: I immediately do like this character.
- 25:01Speaker 1: But it only took like forty minutes for it to
- 25:02Speaker 1: completely flip because she realized that her and Sam were
- 25:05Speaker 1: on the same side. And then you find out that
- 25:07Speaker 1: she trained in the Red Room and you're just like, okay,
- 25:10Speaker 1: we'll get another black widow.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Basically, yeah, this is This is actually what I meant
- 25:15Speaker 3: to get into before when we were talking about like
- 25:17Speaker 3: it expanded cast of characters right from all sides. I
- 25:20Speaker 3: think Ruth is a great example because, like you said,
- 25:23Speaker 3: we have influence of the Red Room in this movie, right,
- 25:27Speaker 3: which I want to so I know that this movie
- 25:30Speaker 3: went through a bunch of reshoots, right, which, like that
- 25:32Speaker 3: doesn't mean anything for anyone that's like, oh, this movie
- 25:34Speaker 3: because there were reshoots, like most movies do that.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Most movies go through reshoots.
- 25:39Speaker 3: But I'm wondering if there was a version of this
- 25:41Speaker 3: movie early on with like the inclusion of a character
- 25:44Speaker 3: literally from Russia that was part of like the paranoia
- 25:49Speaker 3: theme about like who do you trust right right? And
- 25:52Speaker 3: like ultimately this is always going to be a character
- 25:55Speaker 3: of who you trusted, right, But because of her background,
- 25:59Speaker 3: you're led to believe, well, maybe there's something bad about.
- 26:02Speaker 2: This character, right. But Yeah, her introduction was interesting. I
- 26:08Speaker 2: enjoyed her. Gene carl Esposito as Sidewinder.
- 26:13Speaker 3: He's always super fun, He's always great at playing a
- 26:17Speaker 3: bad guy.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Yea, And what was nice about him and really all
- 26:20Speaker 2: of our all of our villains.
- 26:22Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure what was nice about all of our
- 26:25Speaker 3: villains in this movie is I don't think any of
- 26:28Speaker 3: them died, so like there's promise for them to all
- 26:31Speaker 3: return in later MCU films.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Yeah, and and you know we're getting some what we
- 26:36Speaker 1: got some more insight into the raft. Listen, the more
- 26:42Speaker 1: the more bad guys you put in one place, the
- 26:44Speaker 1: more of a chance something goes wrong and they all
- 26:46Speaker 1: get out.
- 26:48Speaker 2: I'm gonna marvel plot Lie yeah.
- 26:50Speaker 1: I mean, well, we'll see there's no way the raft
- 26:53Speaker 1: doesn't get compromised at some point in the future.
- 26:54Speaker 4: That's just.
- 26:57Speaker 1: That's just I don't know, it seems it seems like
- 27:01Speaker 1: something to potentially keep an eye for. But my main
- 27:05Speaker 1: questions after this film are animantium. Are we getting X
- 27:08Speaker 1: Men in our universe?
- 27:09Speaker 4: Right?
- 27:09Speaker 1: Like we just had Dudpool and Wolverine, but we don't
- 27:12Speaker 1: have X Men in this in this particular earth right
- 27:18Speaker 1: or in this in this multiverse we don't have the
- 27:20Speaker 1: X Men.
- 27:21Speaker 4: It's not been established. Is the animantium inside.
- 27:24Speaker 1: The celestial that's being mine now our first real like, hey,
- 27:30Speaker 1: the X Men are coming, although there was a reference
- 27:32Speaker 1: in Missus Marvel the TV show to X Men as well, right,
- 27:34Speaker 1: So that's my main question here from this film, like
- 27:37Speaker 1: what's going on there? And then of course who are
- 27:40Speaker 1: the new Avengers going to be?
- 27:41Speaker 4: Because now Sam's gonna have to get a band together.
- 27:45Speaker 3: The biggest question mark is why the Thunderbolts weren't mentioned
- 27:49Speaker 3: in this movie, and by logic there is, so it's
- 27:53Speaker 3: the next movie coming out. It's weird that the the
- 27:57Speaker 3: post credit ending here didn't didn't set up the next movie.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Like, very very strange choice there.
- 28:05Speaker 3: But the Thunderbolts are thus named the Thunderbolts because they
- 28:09Speaker 3: were named after Fatteus Thunderbolt Ross.
- 28:13Speaker 2: In the comics.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Like he's the guy who sets him up, right, So
- 28:17Speaker 3: like when he was like I need a new Avengers squad,
- 28:20Speaker 3: I was like, Ah, that's where they're going with this.
- 28:22Speaker 2: I see the Thunderbolts, but nothing.
- 28:24Speaker 3: So like, that's my biggest question mark, what happened to
- 28:27Speaker 3: this part of the script where that was involved.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Right, And well, he's gonna he's just in prison now, right,
- 28:32Speaker 1: that's his for the forever, right, So, and it's not him,
- 28:35Speaker 1: it's Valentina that's setting up the Thunderbolts, as we know
- 28:37Speaker 1: from the trailers and from you know, some previous.
- 28:39Speaker 4: Post credit scenes. So that's probably why they didn't go
- 28:43Speaker 4: with it, because that's.
- 28:44Speaker 2: Also unless he is part of that movie. For the record,
- 28:47Speaker 2: he could be.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Yeah, but that also might be why there's an asterisk
- 28:50Speaker 1: next to Thunderbolts.
- 28:51Speaker 2: It's because that's not their name.
- 28:54Speaker 4: That's what their name is in the comics.
- 28:56Speaker 1: But you know, this version of the MCU is taking
- 28:59Speaker 1: some liberties and just going a slightly different route.
- 29:01Speaker 3: So no, I think you're a especially with the the
- 29:06Speaker 3: quote that John Carter has during the trailer where he's like,
- 29:09Speaker 3: thank you, Like, let's not be the thunderbolts, right, right,
- 29:12Speaker 3: So like, yeah, the title of the movies end up
- 29:15Speaker 3: is going to be something different, right, We'll see what
- 29:18Speaker 3: it actually is. I will say this, I do have
- 29:22Speaker 3: a prediction for the future that I just came up
- 29:24Speaker 3: with as you were talking about Celestial Island.
- 29:29Speaker 2: This is gonna be my MCU Hail.
- 29:31Speaker 3: Mary as far as called it goes okay, So Samuel
- 29:36Speaker 3: Stearns at the end of this movie references like the
- 29:39Speaker 3: war that we're waiting for regarding like the multiverse like imploding, right,
- 29:44Speaker 3: all right, So the comic that that that whole story
- 29:48Speaker 3: is based on, it's called Time runs Out. And when
- 29:52Speaker 3: time when time runs out happens. Basically, mister Fantastic decides
- 29:59Speaker 3: that there's no way to save the Earth and there's
- 30:02Speaker 3: no way to save the universe. So in a last
- 30:05Speaker 3: ditch effort, as their universe is dying, he takes raw
- 30:09Speaker 3: material from let's just call it a celestial god, right,
- 30:15Speaker 3: like a god of the universe that died on the moon.
- 30:18Speaker 3: He takes raw material from that, and he creates like
- 30:20Speaker 3: an aircraft that will survive like the end of the universe, right,
- 30:25Speaker 3: I think that that's what they're trying to use. The
- 30:28Speaker 3: celestial a celestial island four, you know that comic goes.
- 30:32Speaker 3: I think that they've set themselves up for something very
- 30:36Speaker 3: similar for the end of like the MCU, the Marvel Cinematic.
- 30:40Speaker 2: Universe, right.
- 30:41Speaker 3: The way that they're going to survive and past like
- 30:44Speaker 3: the next Avengers movie into Avengers, like into Avengers what
- 30:48Speaker 3: would it be five? And to Avengers five is they're
- 30:51Speaker 3: going to use that celestial the body of the raw
- 30:53Speaker 3: material of that celestial the adamantium, to survive the end
- 30:57Speaker 3: of the universe and then bridge up into the next
- 31:00Speaker 3: Avengers film, Avengers five, like the remnants of like the
- 31:03Speaker 3: survivors of that ship that is going to be built.
- 31:06Speaker 4: Interesting, m all right.
- 31:09Speaker 3: I like the helm Mary, But yeah, uh, as far
- 31:13Speaker 3: as this movie goes Nick out of five, I'd probably
- 31:16Speaker 3: give it a three, just right down the middle for me,
- 31:18Speaker 3: you know, Okay.
- 31:20Speaker 4: Now for me, honestly, I think three point eight. I
- 31:22Speaker 4: enjoyed it. I definitely watch it again. I love this
- 31:26Speaker 4: celestial thing.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Finally, in the animantium so like and sent Captain America Anthony Mackie,
- 31:31Speaker 1: Sam Wilson, just Chef's kiss, fantastic love that.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Oh Captain, my captain.
- 31:36Speaker 4: Oh, Captain, my captain. So yeah, three point eight for me.
- 31:40Speaker 4: And then you had a question I want to bring up.
- 31:46Speaker 4: Is this Captain America four a Hulk two?
- 31:51Speaker 2: You know what. I'm glad that you reminded me about this.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Yeah, So after talking to you, it's more like Hulk
- 31:58Speaker 1: two and Captain America is like a massive cameo, right.
- 32:05Speaker 2: Right, there's so much like Incredible Hulk stuff in this movie.
- 32:10Speaker 2: They can't use the word watched.
- 32:12Speaker 3: You can't call any of the Captain America movies and
- 32:15Speaker 3: you had just watched The Incredible Hulk, you would know
- 32:17Speaker 3: exactly what's going on, right, you know what I mean?
- 32:20Speaker 4: Right, But you can't.
- 32:21Speaker 1: They can't use the word Hulk in the title, so
- 32:23Speaker 1: they had to make it a Captain American film. Legally,
- 32:27Speaker 1: they can't use the word Hulk in a title for
- 32:28Speaker 1: a movie without paying, so they had to make it
- 32:31Speaker 1: a Captain America film.
- 32:33Speaker 2: There it is, there, it is. It all comes down
- 32:36Speaker 2: to the rights.
- 32:36Speaker 4: But it's Hulk too.
- 32:39Speaker 1: It's Captain America and the Hulk is what it is.
- 32:42Speaker 2: He's a friend from work.
- 32:43Speaker 4: He's a friend from work man.
- 32:47Speaker 3: But yeah, absolutely, I'm there with you. It's a sequel
- 32:50Speaker 3: to The Incredible Hulk, Nick. If we have more thoughts
- 32:56Speaker 3: on Captain America for the best way to keep up
