- 0:20Speaker 1: Episode thirty six of NHL Unscripted coming at you.
- 0:23Speaker 2: What a great episode we have today.
- 0:24Speaker 1: One of the great fighters both on and off the ice,
- 0:27Speaker 1: Kelly Chase has in the joyce. He's got unbelievable stories
- 0:30Speaker 1: from paling around from the likes of Brett Hull to
- 0:32Speaker 1: John Ham.
- 0:33Speaker 2: You're gonna love Chaser.
- 0:34Speaker 1: More hilacious travel dates for Jason Demurs coming up. We'll
- 0:37Speaker 1: find out right now. He's in Sunrise, Florida. As we'll
- 0:39Speaker 1: be talking plenty about what happened in game three and
- 0:41Speaker 1: looking ahead to game four. Also centiph and sixty on
- 0:45Speaker 1: the talented mister Ripley twenty fifth anniversary.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Had to watch it. It's great that David mans it's nothing.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Good movie.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it's great. I do enjoy it. Chick movie.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Let's talk hockey, my friend, before we get to the
- 0:55Speaker 1: silly stuff Panthers rolled in game three. Man, Games one
- 0:58Speaker 1: and two could not have been better, right, we're talking
- 0:59Speaker 1: to this as an epics Dalley Cup file in game three,
- 1:01Speaker 1: so much for that shit. Panthers just kicked their ass
- 1:04Speaker 1: off the races. Ste Skinner gets chased in the third
- 1:07Speaker 1: Florida powery specifically three for eleven and a game that
- 1:10Speaker 1: got awfully nasty.
- 1:11Speaker 2: The third praise. We'll talk undisciplined play here JD.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Edmonton took twenty one penalties, which is tied for the
- 1:17Speaker 1: second most by one team in a Cup final game.
- 1:19Speaker 1: The two teams combined for one hundred and forty penalty minutes,
- 1:22Speaker 1: fourth most in a.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Cup final game.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I'm assuming you didn't see this coming as far as
- 1:26Speaker 1: far as a one sided game, but after two tight
- 1:28Speaker 1: games like that, sometimes abrot happens.
- 1:30Speaker 2: What do you make of the physicality, Well.
- 1:33Speaker 4: When you look at it, it's it's Edmonton finally getting
- 1:36Speaker 4: frustrated or they've been getting it's just boiling over, and
- 1:39Speaker 4: it's it's kind of classic Florida. People try to out Florida,
- 1:43Speaker 4: the Florida Panthers, and you can't do it. They're like
- 1:46Speaker 4: the younger brother that just kind of poke, say hey, hey,
- 1:49Speaker 4: what are you doing, Like, come on, give me the remote,
- 1:50Speaker 4: Give me the remote, Give me the remote. And then
- 1:52Speaker 4: all of a sudden you turn around smack them in
- 1:53Speaker 4: the head and they go, ah, oh, I'm not doing anything,
- 1:56Speaker 4: And mom and dad yell at you, which is the
- 1:57Speaker 4: ref's giving you penalties.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Excellent analogy, Thank you very much.
- 2:01Speaker 4: And it's just funny because you know it's it's I'm
- 2:06Speaker 4: more of the air, and it'd be funny to you know,
- 2:10Speaker 4: ask anybody that played back in the day. It's if
- 2:12Speaker 4: you're gonna kind of take your pound and flash show
- 2:14Speaker 4: to speak. And you know, at the end of the
- 2:16Speaker 4: game they start going after Florida. But like, if you're
- 2:19Speaker 4: gonna do it, just do it all the way, like
- 2:21Speaker 4: go get take a suspension or something, because if you're
- 2:23Speaker 4: gonna kind of slash a guy, you know, I vander
- 2:26Speaker 4: Kain slashes Cardiver Hagen kind in the face a little
- 2:28Speaker 4: bit like a little love tap gets kicked out, and
- 2:31Speaker 4: like if you're gonna get kicked out, make sure there's
- 2:32Speaker 4: some teeth falling out, make sure that you make it worthwhile.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Because when you're going and you're just kind of cross
- 2:38Speaker 4: checking in the arm and they're obviously not gonna engage you,
- 2:40Speaker 4: they're just you're they're up six to one, they're just
- 2:43Speaker 4: kinda they're just gonna kind of float through. And now
- 2:46Speaker 4: they got you mentally, and you know, the Edmonton Oilers
- 2:50Speaker 4: just kind of man they just came undone completely and
- 2:56Speaker 4: I think, listen, you have you have the chance to reset.
- 2:59Speaker 4: It's one game and it's amazing how the narrative changes.
- 3:02Speaker 4: But that was just a bad games start to finish
- 3:05Speaker 4: for the Edmontonals and they could not find their footing
- 3:08Speaker 4: and then they just were little bitches.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Yeah, and to your point of how the narrative changes,
- 3:13Speaker 1: it's funny how it's gone from like, oh my god,
- 3:15Speaker 1: those two games are so tight, this is going six
- 3:17Speaker 1: probably seven.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Now it's it could always be done in five.
- 3:20Speaker 1: And that's where it gets interesting because I say to myself,
- 3:22Speaker 1: j Dy, well, the others can't possibly be worse. They
- 3:24Speaker 1: were dominated. I think Skinner's back in that. I do
- 3:26Speaker 1: think he bounces back. But this Game four is truly
- 3:29Speaker 1: must win because you lose this game. I know you
- 3:31Speaker 1: still have two games at home in Games five and
- 3:33Speaker 1: game seven, but you're not gonna win.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Three straight against the defanning Steley Cup champions. This is
- 3:36Speaker 2: truly a must winning Game four for the Olders.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, I don't think they can do what they
- 3:41Speaker 4: did last year coming back from down three to nothing
- 3:44Speaker 4: and bringing it to seven. It's just a lot of
- 3:46Speaker 4: hockey and it's tough to everything needs to work that way.
- 3:50Speaker 4: This is it for them in the sense of, like
- 3:52Speaker 4: this is a big game. I think they wanted to
- 3:54Speaker 4: come back and split. You know, Stuart Skinner, what six
- 3:57Speaker 4: to zero in games game fours and he's just lights
- 4:01Speaker 4: out goals against under one point three. He's he's so
- 4:06Speaker 4: dialed in in game fours, and this team is. And
- 4:08Speaker 4: I think this team kind of figures, you know, teams
- 4:10Speaker 4: out slowly but surely, and I expect their best effort
- 4:14Speaker 4: in game four. And I expect you know, Connor and
- 4:16Speaker 4: Leon who kind of been a little bit quiet, we're
- 4:19Speaker 4: a little bit quiet last game and we're't able to
- 4:21Speaker 4: generate much.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I think they're gonna be flying.
- 4:23Speaker 4: I think there's gonna need to be some changes on
- 4:25Speaker 4: the defensive side, on the decor. But yeah, this should
- 4:29Speaker 4: be a desperate, urgent team because you know, going back
- 4:32Speaker 4: to Edmonton especially. The thing to remember too is like
- 4:34Speaker 4: this game four and five one one day in between.
- 4:38Speaker 2: It's a travel day.
- 4:40Speaker 4: So it is going to be a difficult game for
- 4:43Speaker 4: guys to kind of bounce back from. And it's gonna
- 4:45Speaker 4: be tough, I think physically and mentally to stay locked
- 4:49Speaker 4: in even though so for me, I'm like, looking at Edmonton,
- 4:52Speaker 4: we win this game, We're flying back to Edmonton, go
- 4:54Speaker 4: one day. Home is where the heart is. You know,
- 4:57Speaker 4: we'll have the mental edge and you know we can
- 4:58Speaker 4: quickly be up three to two in the series and
- 5:00Speaker 4: be in the driver's seats. So but it starts with
- 5:02Speaker 4: this game starts at game four.
- 5:05Speaker 1: No doubt about. It's your point. But Skipper how Skinner?
- 5:07Speaker 1: Excuse me, Kimpert, Yeah, give a Hipper this deal. Let's
- 5:10Speaker 1: call it Skipper Skinner five and zero in game four
- 5:13Speaker 1: with two shutouts, so he's been at his best in
- 5:16Speaker 1: those game forts it's always seems so pivotal. Quick thought
- 5:18Speaker 1: of Marshan first player in hockey history scoring overtime Golden
- 5:21Speaker 1: Stanley come filed, then scoring in the next game in
- 5:23Speaker 1: the opening minute, also becomes the oldest player at age
- 5:26Speaker 1: thirty seven, to scoring the first three games of a final.
- 5:28Speaker 1: But I want to get to silly stuff, which is
- 5:30Speaker 1: Paul Maurice, who's always a great quote even in game.
- 5:33Speaker 1: I mean normally, yeah, some guys postgame, they're good in game. No,
- 5:36Speaker 1: Greig poppitsrmally they're very serious guys. He's cracking wise with
- 5:39Speaker 1: Jackie Redman, friend of the show here who told us
- 5:42Speaker 1: when we asked you, who's your favorite coach?
- 5:43Speaker 2: Dodger said, palm Maras is the best.
- 5:45Speaker 1: In an in game interview, when Redmand brought up Bennett's
- 5:47Speaker 1: upcoming free agency.
- 5:48Speaker 2: To about Sam Bennett, pal Marie said, I don't think.
- 5:50Speaker 5: His agent's gonna have to work that hard this summer.
- 5:52Speaker 6: But I'll move on a horrible altitude. I think he's
- 5:54Speaker 6: got beavonic player.
- 5:56Speaker 2: I see what you're doing, the nine fever.
- 5:58Speaker 3: He's got a whole bunch of things.
- 5:59Speaker 7: We're not sure he can be cured.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Play the game, Paul, play the game.
- 6:02Speaker 6: Thank you for.
- 6:03Speaker 4: This dangy dangy fever to Dang.
- 6:08Speaker 1: You are sipt Danang all the place here. What you
- 6:12Speaker 1: mean having some fun during the game?
- 6:15Speaker 7: What's Danang fever?
- 6:16Speaker 2: Oh?
- 6:17Speaker 4: That's uh topic. I got this, but I got this
- 6:24Speaker 4: booty sweat I got back in d Nang.
- 6:27Speaker 2: I said, it's definitely a Vietnam thing.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I think Robert Williams too good morying Vietnam. Dang Yeah,
- 6:34Speaker 1: uh yeah. Why wouldn't you say every bad thing about
- 6:37Speaker 1: Sam Benning and the media the way he's played. I
- 6:40Speaker 1: think he's like, what the odds for him to win
- 6:43Speaker 1: kan smythe are like down to like plus one seventy five.
- 6:46Speaker 1: He was like fifteen thousand or thirty thousand at the
- 6:50Speaker 1: start of these playoffs, and we talked about it on
- 6:54Speaker 1: the network, where like, this guy should be in the
- 6:57Speaker 1: consideration for the con smythe easily the way you know,
- 7:01Speaker 1: set set the record NHL history most roade goals. I
- 7:05Speaker 1: mean that shift of his uh to score that goal,
- 7:09Speaker 1: or he goes in absolutely truck sticks Pod Coles and
- 7:14Speaker 1: truck sticks. Klingberg then almost takes out Drysdal and then
- 7:17Speaker 1: a shot out of a fucking cannon on the breakaway
- 7:20Speaker 1: and goes, eh, backhand, forehand, where's the jackstrap.
- 7:24Speaker 2: It's in the back of the net.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Danang, danang, danangh But no, I think, uh, you know,
- 7:31Speaker 4: Paul Maurice is very smart.
- 7:32Speaker 2: He's become this kind of quote machine.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Yea, I feel like he's got the he's got a
- 7:38Speaker 4: joke writer in the back. That's right and stuff for
- 7:40Speaker 4: him because everything seems way too quick and quippy for
- 7:44Speaker 4: it to be legitimate. But yeah, that was pretty good.
- 7:47Speaker 4: He's just like, yeah, he's a great guy. Does all
- 7:49Speaker 4: the right things. And then Jackie's like, his agent's gonna
- 7:51Speaker 4: really be uh really be excited, and he's like, no
- 7:54Speaker 4: bad guy, danang fever. Now I'm saying it, dang dang faver,
- 8:00Speaker 4: and you got me all fucked up.
- 8:02Speaker 2: But I love the idea of him having a show Grier.
- 8:04Speaker 2: That's great. These guys making dollars a day, give me
- 8:06Speaker 2: some good quotes. I got a guy.
- 8:07Speaker 4: I bet you imagine I have a punch up guy
- 8:09Speaker 4: as you're going to do these coaches interviews.
- 8:11Speaker 2: I love that idea, great concept.
- 8:13Speaker 1: They got an ifp guys some of the writers from
- 8:15Speaker 1: Fould feeding me jokes, that would be amazing.
- 8:17Speaker 2: If Palmers seriously had a joke writer, it'd be so good.
- 8:19Speaker 2: All right?
- 8:20Speaker 1: Coming up next Kelly Chase, an absolute fighter both on
- 8:23Speaker 1: the ice and off. We're talking with Chaser about his
- 8:26Speaker 1: battles coming up next right here on NHL inscripted right
- 8:29Speaker 1: after this. Our next guest was signed in nineteen eighty
- 8:43Speaker 1: eight by the Saint Louis Blues as.
- 8:44Speaker 2: An undrafted free agent.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Went on to play four hundred and fifteen NHL games
- 8:48Speaker 1: for the Blues, Whalers and Maple Leafs during his eleven
- 8:50Speaker 1: seasons in the NHL, he was regarded as one of
- 8:53Speaker 1: the toughest and most respected people in the game, and
- 8:56Speaker 1: that sentiment has not changed it all since he retired.
- 8:58Speaker 1: He was the Pride of Porcupine playing Saskatchewan Kelly Chase Chaser.
- 9:01Speaker 2: It is great to see how are I, my friend?
- 9:03Speaker 8: I'm doing I'm doing great. But you know, the amount
- 9:06Speaker 8: of times you guys changed this podcast and everything I
- 9:08Speaker 8: thought I was going on with two Hall of Famers,
- 9:10Speaker 8: I'm gonna get you guys were doing. I'm like, who
- 9:13Speaker 8: are these guys anyway? Amount of times they've changed.
- 9:16Speaker 2: I think that's important, you know, have The answer is no,
- 9:19Speaker 2: But you're right. We cause a lot of chaos.
- 9:22Speaker 1: We're gonna get to the hockey to sect can I
- 9:23Speaker 1: But of course everyone's following you and your health of
- 9:26Speaker 1: these last few years.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Give us an up. How you feel right now?
- 9:29Speaker 3: Not bad?
- 9:30Speaker 2: You know.
- 9:30Speaker 3: I I've got.
- 9:32Speaker 8: A a little bit of a setback. I got the
- 9:36Speaker 8: graph host disease, which is called it's called graph host GVHD,
- 9:40Speaker 8: which is sort of a little bit of a It's
- 9:43Speaker 8: where your stomach kind of fights the enzymes that your
- 9:45Speaker 8: brother had, My brother and I had. He was the
- 9:48Speaker 8: transplant for me, he was one hundred percent match. So
- 9:53Speaker 8: I've lost a lot of weight, which I kind of
- 9:55Speaker 8: joke because that some people are going on a zempic.
- 9:57Speaker 8: I went with chemo and lost you know, sixty five
- 10:02Speaker 8: or seventy pounds here. But I'm starting to come out
- 10:05Speaker 8: of it a little bit now. I am at the
- 10:06Speaker 8: hospital now, but I but again, it was one of
- 10:09Speaker 8: those things where.
- 10:11Speaker 3: I think.
- 10:13Speaker 8: The chemo and everything in the in the in the
- 10:15Speaker 8: clinical trial drug that I went that I needed to
- 10:18Speaker 8: combat the leukemia has worked. So from a cancer perspective,
- 10:24Speaker 8: it seems like it's all gone and it's in remission,
- 10:26Speaker 8: which is a blessing.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Uh.
- 10:27Speaker 8: The GVHD still there, so uh, we're still working through
- 10:32Speaker 8: that and trying to get myself so I'm not in
- 10:35Speaker 8: a situation where I can't swallow or I can't eat
- 10:40Speaker 8: or whatever, and uh and and so we're still.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Having to work through that. It's work in progress right now.
- 10:45Speaker 3: But I feel pretty good.
- 10:47Speaker 8: And I've been treated great here at Sitement Cancer Institute.
- 10:50Speaker 8: So just keep batting and and hopefully we keep going down.
- 10:55Speaker 3: The right path.
- 10:57Speaker 4: You're You're a tough bastard man and an inspiration and
- 11:00Speaker 4: I love hearing that you got some good, good, positive news.
- 11:03Speaker 4: And you know, we spoke with Pat Maroon last week.
- 11:06Speaker 9: And I can see why all this outreach for him
- 11:09Speaker 9: with his charity events and everyone that comes and the
- 11:12Speaker 9: people that show up, and he deserves it more than
- 11:15Speaker 9: anyone because he's he's the one that probably did something
- 11:19Speaker 9: for all those people before that, you know, So that's
- 11:23Speaker 9: just the kind of guy he is. And you know,
- 11:24Speaker 9: hopefully he can keep fighting here and he can battle
- 11:27Speaker 9: his way out of this because he is a fighter.
- 11:30Speaker 9: And we're all thinking of him, and you know, lots
- 11:32Speaker 9: of prayers for him, but you know, he's a fighter though,
- 11:35Speaker 9: we all know that, so he'll get through this.
- 11:38Speaker 4: He told some great stories about you, and you know,
- 11:41Speaker 4: talked about why the hockey community is so great and
- 11:44Speaker 4: and everybody's been so eager to rush to support you
- 11:47Speaker 4: because you know, the resounding thing is everybody says you'd
- 11:50Speaker 4: be the first one to be there if anybody needed
- 11:52Speaker 4: any help. And what's it mean to you and what
- 11:55Speaker 4: do you make of the way that hockey community has
- 11:57Speaker 4: supported you so much during this.
- 11:59Speaker 8: Yeah, it's pretty remarkable. I mean, you get up in
- 12:01Speaker 8: the morning and have you know, twenty thirty. Sometimes text messages.
- 12:07Speaker 8: It's one thing to know that you have support.
- 12:09Speaker 3: And I say this a lot.
- 12:11Speaker 8: I think a lot of the people in here will
- 12:12Speaker 8: make it out of here because they they die a loneliness.
- 12:17Speaker 8: And I think in the hockey community, the one thing
- 12:19Speaker 8: that we have is this unique brotherhood of people that
- 12:21Speaker 8: that have constantly just check in with you. Pat's one
- 12:25Speaker 8: of those guys that. You know, Pat was, you know,
- 12:27Speaker 8: a young kid that didn't really know the direction he
- 12:29Speaker 8: should take. And and I was fortunate enough to I
- 12:33Speaker 8: owned a junior team, and I was fortunate enough to
- 12:36Speaker 8: be able to bring him to camp and and sort
- 12:38Speaker 8: of give him some direction and some guidance because I think,
- 12:41Speaker 8: you know, in Saint Louis, there wasn't a lot of that.
- 12:43Speaker 8: I think you could it was. It's easy to just
- 12:46Speaker 8: fall into a situation in Saint Louis where.
- 12:51Speaker 3: You know, you don't really know the direction.
- 12:53Speaker 8: It's changed quite significantly, and Pat's one of the reasons why.
- 12:56Speaker 8: But you know, you'll see the Kit Chuck Boys, Clayton Keller, Brick, Trent,
- 13:00Speaker 8: Frederick Logan down, a lot of those guys, you know,
- 13:04Speaker 8: they kind of took the direction from Pat and so
- 13:07Speaker 8: like when Pat was starting, he didn't really have a
- 13:12Speaker 8: clue what to do. We basically had to tell his parents,
- 13:14Speaker 8: like you got first of all, you got to stop
- 13:16Speaker 8: feeding him, because that's the first thing you gotta do,
- 13:20Speaker 8: or we're gonna move him out of your house. And
- 13:22Speaker 8: then the second thing was is just you know what
- 13:24Speaker 8: direction he should take. So Pat's one of those guys
- 13:28Speaker 8: in the hockey world that has always checked in with me.
- 13:30Speaker 8: Is funny because you brought it up what it means
- 13:33Speaker 8: the hockey community. I just heard from Osh who just
- 13:36Speaker 8: retired and had his party. I hear from a lot
- 13:41Speaker 8: of the young guys that that I didn't even play
- 13:43Speaker 8: with that I just I would say, kind of mentor
- 13:46Speaker 8: through Saint Louis, And it's just great to see the
- 13:49Speaker 8: success a lot of these guys have had. I think
- 13:52Speaker 8: that's the one thing that I think. I'm sure you
- 13:54Speaker 8: realize when you retired, you don't miss the game as
- 13:56Speaker 8: much as you miss the guys.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Yeah, you know.
- 13:59Speaker 8: So for me, knowing I've said this before in this
- 14:03Speaker 8: chair that I'm saying in right now, I wake up
- 14:05Speaker 8: one morning and I fought Grimsom like eleven times, and
- 14:08Speaker 8: he's sitting beside my bed and I look over and
- 14:12Speaker 8: I'm like, oh, Jesus, I must be sick if you're here.
- 14:16Speaker 8: And he starts laughing and he says, Chase, I want
- 14:18Speaker 8: to kiss you on the lips right now, and there's
- 14:20Speaker 8: nothing you can do about it. I said, well, you're
- 14:22Speaker 8: zero and eleven so far, so you might as well
- 14:24Speaker 8: get it in now, because this is your best chance, buddy.
- 14:28Speaker 8: So you know, just knowing that that there's so many
- 14:30Speaker 8: guys that care around the hockey community is pretty.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Special, no question.
- 14:35Speaker 2: But you mentioned tj Oshan announced his retirement on Monday.
- 14:38Speaker 1: You play with some major personality during your time in
- 14:40Speaker 1: Saint Louis, Chase or Brett hol obviously, Brendan Shanahan, Chris Pronger,
- 14:44Speaker 1: Mark Bershman, Basima Craye, Tony Twist.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Who stands out of that list, Well.
- 14:50Speaker 8: I mean you mentioned a lot of great guys and
- 14:54Speaker 8: a lot of guys that were great players too, you know,
- 14:56Speaker 8: like I played, I was lucky because you think about it,
- 14:58Speaker 8: you play with I played with mckinni's hole Pronger, all
- 15:01Speaker 8: those guys at the same time, you know, that's a
- 15:04Speaker 8: those hall of famers and guys those guys are special,
- 15:08Speaker 8: pretty pretty neat, you know. And you look at a
- 15:09Speaker 8: power play and you know you got mckinnison Pronger on
- 15:13Speaker 8: the back end, you got Hall Tours on Demetra, and
- 15:17Speaker 8: you know you're kind of sitting on the bench going, man,
- 15:18Speaker 8: I feel pretty confident right now, like we we got
- 15:20Speaker 8: a chance here. And uh, and you know, you see
- 15:25Speaker 8: some of those guys, Mark Berzwan just a character Twister.
- 15:29Speaker 8: I don't think there's anybody mentally tougher or tougher in
- 15:32Speaker 8: the game than Tony Twist. I mean just the Race
- 15:37Speaker 8: for Chase they used to call it. Guys would try
- 15:39Speaker 8: and come out and get their fight in and they
- 15:41Speaker 8: would race to fight with me so they didn't have
- 15:43Speaker 8: to fight with Twister. That was real, real, The Race
- 15:46Speaker 8: for Chase was a real thing where guys, uh, you know,
- 15:50Speaker 8: it's funny. Mark Bergerman was telling the story rob Ray
- 15:53Speaker 8: and and Twister got into a fight, and and Twister
- 15:56Speaker 8: broke rob Ray's cheat book. And Bersion was telling the
- 15:59Speaker 8: story last year, and there was Rob Blake and Nelson
- 16:02Speaker 8: Emerson and Todd Calling and trent Yannie, myself, Twister and
- 16:07Speaker 8: and burs says uh Shassar you know, he calls me
- 16:11Speaker 8: Chaser and Chaser instead of Chaser.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Shassar Shassar.
- 16:15Speaker 8: Remember when the big guy going to fight with Rob
- 16:18Speaker 8: Ray and he fight him and he breaks his cheek
- 16:19Speaker 8: bone and I said, yeah, Burish, I remember Twister breaking
- 16:22Speaker 8: his cheek bone. He goes and then we go to
- 16:24Speaker 8: Buffalo and the next time we played them, then they're
- 16:27Speaker 8: running around and it is the race for Chase and
- 16:30Speaker 8: and so Razor and and Brad May and Boogner and
- 16:35Speaker 8: Barnaby and all these guys are running around and and
- 16:38Speaker 8: they're and they're trying to get after me. And Twist
- 16:41Speaker 8: is on the trip and he says, and he says,
- 16:44Speaker 8: and you take them to the timeout and you elbow
- 16:46Speaker 8: Brad May and the nose and you say, that's all right.
- 16:48Speaker 8: I fight with all you guys, but the big guy
- 16:50Speaker 8: at home right now and he's watching the game. And
- 16:53Speaker 8: when we play you next week, he's going to be
- 16:55Speaker 8: in the lineup, So don't worry. At which I did.
- 16:58Speaker 8: I got into it may Day and I said, don't worry, guys.
- 17:02Speaker 8: I said, I'll fight with all of you tonight, but
- 17:04Speaker 8: big guys watching on TV right tonight at home. Next
- 17:07Speaker 8: week we got you guys again, and he goes and
- 17:09Speaker 8: then the next thing, you know, Pavel's score tree goal
- 17:12Speaker 8: and we win the game and no fight, and we
- 17:13Speaker 8: win the game and it was nothing because we calmed
- 17:16Speaker 8: the big guy calm everything down from home.
- 17:20Speaker 3: It was hilarious.
- 17:21Speaker 8: You know, He's basically saying, like Twister scared everybody, and
- 17:25Speaker 8: he just all I had to do was threatn the guys, saying, yeah,
- 17:27Speaker 8: Twister was at home watching it, watching on TV, and
- 17:31Speaker 8: and he was going to make sure everything was cleaned
- 17:33Speaker 8: up next week. So how it was with him, I mean,
- 17:37Speaker 8: he was just that tough. So you know, I roomed
- 17:40Speaker 8: with Hull for seven and a half years. So the
- 17:41Speaker 8: stories are endless, and I'm pretty fortunate to uh to
- 17:47Speaker 8: play that long, and especially playing in city that loves
- 17:50Speaker 8: sports like it doesn't say Louis. So I had a
- 17:52Speaker 8: lot of characters that I played with it.
- 17:55Speaker 3: There were a lot of fun you you.
- 17:58Speaker 4: I read a story about you and Brett Hall stealing
- 18:02Speaker 4: Bob Barry's.
- 18:02Speaker 7: Car, yeah and his Jaguar.
- 18:05Speaker 8: Yeah yeah, we uh well he we went to the
- 18:09Speaker 8: game one night and I came to the game with Shanahan.
- 18:11Speaker 8: I live with Brendan and Hali asked me if we're
- 18:15Speaker 8: going out after and or you know, we're going to
- 18:17Speaker 8: ride together. I said sure. So I went up to
- 18:19Speaker 8: the offices where he cut out of the rink all
- 18:21Speaker 8: the time. He went in a different exit out of
- 18:23Speaker 8: the rink, and he said, where'd you park? And I said,
- 18:27Speaker 8: I don't have a car. What do you mean I
- 18:29Speaker 8: have a car? I said, I'm in a car. He
- 18:32Speaker 8: said Jesus, and he said, I'll be right back. So
- 18:34Speaker 8: he comes back and he's got the keys to a car.
- 18:41Speaker 8: We go out to the parking lot and he goes,
- 18:42Speaker 8: come on, let's go, and he jumps in Bob Berry's jag.
- 18:46Speaker 8: So I get in the jag and him and Bob
- 18:48Speaker 8: were kind of close. So I mean, I don't know.
- 18:50Speaker 8: I mean, I don't think he's stealing the thing. I
- 18:53Speaker 8: just figure, you know, he's just talked to Bob and
- 18:57Speaker 8: whatever the deal they made. He's got a car. So
- 19:00Speaker 8: I get in the car. We go down down to
- 19:02Speaker 8: the landing and you mixing. You know, it's you know,
- 19:06Speaker 8: two am, and we're not done. So we go to
- 19:07Speaker 8: the east side. We're gonna go to Pops. It's twenty
- 19:09Speaker 8: four hours joint, so we get over the pops and
- 19:14Speaker 8: it's like it's the lowest form of life. It's it's
- 19:16Speaker 8: basically it's everybody that shouldn't be out that is still out,
- 19:19Speaker 8: Like it's just it's just in place that you just
- 19:22Speaker 8: shake your head.
- 19:23Speaker 3: You're like, what the hell. And it's a.
- 19:25Speaker 8: Mixture of guys in suits to people living on the
- 19:29Speaker 8: street in this place, you know. And it's now it's
- 19:31Speaker 8: like four point thirty in the morning, and I'm like, dude,
- 19:34Speaker 8: we got to go, like, we got to get out
- 19:36Speaker 8: of here.
- 19:36Speaker 3: We got practice in the morning. So he throws me
- 19:39Speaker 3: the keys.
- 19:41Speaker 8: I get out in the parking lot and I'm having
- 19:43Speaker 8: trouble with the lock and I'm jiggling it around and
- 19:46Speaker 8: the key snaps in the door lock.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Now we got Bob Barry's Jaguar.
- 19:51Speaker 8: It isn't like we you know, we got some rental
- 19:54Speaker 8: car that we could just leave over in East Saint Louis. Like,
- 19:56Speaker 8: there's no way you leave the Jag over there, and
- 19:58Speaker 8: it's not on blocks.
- 19:59Speaker 2: When we get back, we go.
- 20:03Speaker 8: To the secure and we finally convinced some guy at
- 20:06Speaker 8: security that he needs to let us in and get
- 20:11Speaker 8: over with the door locks, and he needs to make
- 20:13Speaker 8: this key, so the guy doesn't believe it's Brett Hall.
- 20:16Speaker 8: Find you know, no cell phone, so we're calling from
- 20:18Speaker 8: the desk in the security office at Pops, which is again,
- 20:22Speaker 8: these guys are some rugged customers, right yea. Polly's then
- 20:26Speaker 8: holding court out in the parking lot. He's got a
- 20:28Speaker 8: burning barrel going burning whatever is in the burning barrel,
- 20:32Speaker 8: and he's got cases of beer and he's telling stories
- 20:35Speaker 8: and these people are sitting there like they're having story
- 20:38Speaker 8: time with Brett Hall. The sun's starting to come up,
- 20:41Speaker 8: this guy's making keys. I'm like, this is a disaster.
- 20:44Speaker 8: And he promises that he's going to get everybody at
- 20:46Speaker 8: breakfast at eat Right, which is just across the river
- 20:50Speaker 8: into Saint Louis, into Missouri, and it's his famous place.
- 20:54Speaker 8: It's just a little it's about the size of my
- 20:56Speaker 8: hospital room. But he's going to buy everyone breakfast. So
- 21:01Speaker 8: I'm like, just shut up already, and he's like, ah, cares,
- 21:05Speaker 8: don't worry about it, you know. So pretty soon they
- 21:09Speaker 8: got the door lock unlocked, they get the door the
- 21:12Speaker 8: key made, we get into Bob's car. We're driving across
- 21:15Speaker 8: pull In. I'm like, Holly, we're not stopping it. Eat right,
- 21:18Speaker 8: He goes, of course we are. So we pull in
- 21:21Speaker 8: and all of these people, I mean, guys that are bartender, security, lawyers,
- 21:27Speaker 8: that have had a big night, strippers, you name it.
- 21:32Speaker 8: Every form of life is at the eat right okay,
- 21:35Speaker 8: And it is just like people are walking. I'm like
- 21:37Speaker 8: Jesus and he's just like, whatever they want, and he
- 21:41Speaker 8: just shorter. This guy's they're shorter chef, cooking way, cooking away,
- 21:46Speaker 8: cooking away. Everybody's getting fed. Next thing, you know, Holly's
- 21:49Speaker 8: inviting them to practice. I'm like, Holly, that's inviding everybody
- 21:53Speaker 8: to the rink to practice. So we practice up rent
- 21:56Speaker 8: with ice rink and we come in and we're there
- 21:59Speaker 8: before everybody, and I just want to get in and
- 22:01Speaker 8: get out of my suit because it's the suit I
- 22:03Speaker 8: wore the night before and I don't want the coaches
- 22:05Speaker 8: to see me. And Holly just walks in could care less,
- 22:10Speaker 8: walks right in the coach's office and throws the keys
- 22:12Speaker 8: on Bob Barry's desk, and Bob Barry goes batshit crazy.
- 22:17Speaker 8: He's reported his car stolen. He's going nuts. I can
- 22:21Speaker 8: hear him yelling. All I want to do is get
- 22:23Speaker 8: out of my fucking suit and get into my underwear.
- 22:26Speaker 3: Okay, just not have him see me in but in
- 22:29Speaker 3: this suit.
- 22:30Speaker 8: And he comes around the corner and he sees me
- 22:32Speaker 8: just getting out of my dress pants.
- 22:34Speaker 3: He looks, he goes you.
- 22:36Speaker 8: You, of all fucking guys, you're not good enough to
- 22:39Speaker 8: hang around with him.
- 22:40Speaker 3: I'll fucking send you to the miners. I don't know
- 22:42Speaker 3: who you think you are.
- 22:44Speaker 8: And he starts yelling at me, and Holly's like, relax,
- 22:47Speaker 8: and you know he can't.
- 22:49Speaker 3: He could care less. He's got eighty six dolls he
- 22:51Speaker 3: could carry.
- 22:53Speaker 8: At that point shit from the coach. He hasn't even
- 22:56Speaker 8: given Brett shit. He's reported the car stolen. But the
- 23:00Speaker 8: worst part about the whole thing was we went out
- 23:02Speaker 8: on the ice and all of these people are around
- 23:05Speaker 8: the glass waiting for Holley Stick like they're.
- 23:08Speaker 3: Banging on the glass, hey Chase, you know, great breakfast.
- 23:12Speaker 8: And they's just like security wearing the orange Pops security
- 23:17Speaker 8: jackets and strippers and and like every single.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Like from Pops, like just everything.
- 23:27Speaker 8: And Garth Butcher was the captain and he just skated
- 23:29Speaker 8: out on the ice and he looked around. He watched
- 23:31Speaker 8: this throw up five minutes he comes over and he goes,
- 23:33Speaker 8: what the fuck did you guys do last night?
- 23:36Speaker 3: I said, Butcher, you.
- 23:37Speaker 8: Wouldn't believe it if I told you, and Holly could
- 23:40Speaker 8: care less. He couldn't care that I was getting it.
- 23:42Speaker 8: I got into it, I got all of the shit
- 23:44Speaker 8: for it. But Holly could care less. He was just like, man,
- 23:48Speaker 8: that was fun hunh And I'm like, dude, they're still here.
- 23:51Speaker 8: It's practices over. Get him out of here. Oh what
- 23:54Speaker 8: a day.
- 23:56Speaker 2: You great characters, what a great story.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Uh so you just did in the vedical weeks of
- 24:00Speaker 1: the Make a Wish Foundation.
- 24:01Speaker 2: What keeps you so active with charities like that?
- 24:04Speaker 3: Man, it's funny. You know, when we're playing, we try
- 24:07Speaker 3: and do as much as we can.
- 24:08Speaker 8: I think in a charity world, and I say this,
- 24:11Speaker 8: a lot were an inch deep and a mile wide.
- 24:13Speaker 8: We never really dig in and know exactly where money's
- 24:16Speaker 8: going or what it's going for. And I think just
- 24:21Speaker 8: being this this has changed me a lot. I think
- 24:24Speaker 8: I have a lot more. I can recognize when people
- 24:28Speaker 8: are hurting a little bit more now, I think, and
- 24:31Speaker 8: when you need to take a little bit more time
- 24:33Speaker 8: for people. But also following the money and watching how
- 24:38Speaker 8: you deliver. You know, I think five minutes of your
- 24:41Speaker 8: time is worth more than five thousand year dollars lots
- 24:44Speaker 8: of times. And so I think being able to do
- 24:47Speaker 8: something cool with the kids that make a wish event
- 24:49Speaker 8: we just did was really cool event.
- 24:51Speaker 3: We did it at airline.
- 24:52Speaker 8: Hey, they'd put a golf stream in for kids to
- 24:55Speaker 8: look through the plane. They had all these Perraris and
- 24:58Speaker 8: Lamborghinis and McLaren's and rolls everything around for the kids
- 25:02Speaker 8: to look at. And I think, speak go for a ride,
- 25:05Speaker 8: and it was amazing to watch the kid's spirits and
- 25:08Speaker 8: to know that there was kids that were on that
- 25:10Speaker 8: make a wish list and their wish was to just
- 25:12Speaker 8: meet the Saint Louis Blue.
- 25:13Speaker 3: It's like, how easy is that for us? Right meet
- 25:16Speaker 3: the speaker.
- 25:16Speaker 8: It was like, shit, I could organize that in fifteen seconds.
- 25:20Speaker 8: And you know, and so when you hear like a
- 25:22Speaker 8: lot of these wishes cost ten thousand dollars and stuff
- 25:24Speaker 8: like that, well not for us to show up. And
- 25:27Speaker 8: so I think I think Robbie Thomas, Perico Steen and
- 25:32Speaker 8: Falker were guys that showed up at it, and again
- 25:35Speaker 8: it meant so much to them and we moved the
- 25:37Speaker 8: program around so they could get there and leave because
- 25:40Speaker 8: they had a second event during the day. And to
- 25:42Speaker 8: speak volumes about them just losing out of the playoffs,
- 25:45Speaker 8: being at event, taking the time for it, and then
- 25:49Speaker 8: having to go to a second event that day and
- 25:51Speaker 8: show their faces and be around kids again, I think
- 25:54Speaker 8: speaks volumes about the way hockey players think.
- 25:57Speaker 4: Does that lift your spirits a lot too? You jumping
- 25:59Speaker 4: into those things that I know kind of when I,
- 26:02Speaker 4: you know, was playing and doing a lot of that
- 26:03Speaker 4: stuff with the teams, It always, you know, the perspective,
- 26:07Speaker 4: but also gave me a boost of energy knowing that,
- 26:10Speaker 4: like you're helping people with people's spirits as well.
- 26:14Speaker 8: Yeah, I think so. I think I think I've touched
- 26:16Speaker 8: on that a little bit. About being at the hospital here,
- 26:18Speaker 8: I think there's lots of times where you can walk
- 26:20Speaker 8: around here and recognize when there's people that need a
- 26:24Speaker 8: little bit of a brous You know they're here and
- 26:26Speaker 8: they're lonely, and lots of times you can die in
- 26:28Speaker 8: here because they're lonely, not because of the cancer, because
- 26:31Speaker 8: the cancer is tough and chemo is really tough, and
- 26:34Speaker 8: then having to do it for I think I've been
- 26:36Speaker 8: here off and on for the last year and a half,
- 26:39Speaker 8: just over a year and a half, a year and
- 26:41Speaker 8: eight months. It can it can beat you up. And
- 26:45Speaker 8: so for me, I've got that entire I've got my family,
- 26:48Speaker 8: I've got the people of Saint Louis, but I've got
- 26:50Speaker 8: that hockey family, you know, that supports me where a
- 26:52Speaker 8: lot of people don't. And like you said, going into
- 26:55Speaker 8: one of their rooms and having that conversation, I think
- 26:58Speaker 8: it's good and healthy for people and if you can
- 27:01Speaker 8: help pick them up. I mean, it's just your time
- 27:04Speaker 8: you're in here anyway. So for me, I find it.
- 27:07Speaker 8: I find it, you know, more an obligation more than anything.
- 27:11Speaker 8: I think when you put on your jersey, you have
- 27:13Speaker 8: an obligation to give back. And the fact that you
- 27:16Speaker 8: were talking about you did it and it made you
- 27:17Speaker 8: feel good, it should make you feel good. And but
- 27:20Speaker 8: then on the flip side of it too, I don't
- 27:23Speaker 8: think sometimes we recognize just how valuable we are from
- 27:26Speaker 8: a mental standpoint to people, how many people we can
- 27:29Speaker 8: do something for by just taking a little bit of time.
- 27:33Speaker 2: So we all said last one for me, Kelly any good,
- 27:35Speaker 2: John Ham stories, Well.
- 27:37Speaker 3: The funny thing about him was like he was just
- 27:39Speaker 3: our bartender.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Like he like crazy, It's it's crazy.
- 27:45Speaker 8: The craziest thing is is the first time I seen
- 27:47Speaker 8: him on TV. We were in Hartford. Shanahan' been traded
- 27:50Speaker 8: to Hartford. I've been traded to Hartford. And I look
- 27:52Speaker 8: at the TV. I'm like, what the fuck? And I'm
- 27:55Speaker 8: looking at him and I called Shanahan Cable TV. Of course, right,
- 27:59Speaker 8: I called Shanahan and Hartford. I go, hey, you got
- 28:01Speaker 8: your TV on? He goes, yeah, I go put it
- 28:03Speaker 8: on a fifty one. He's like, what, I go put
- 28:05Speaker 8: on a channel fifty one. He's like why, I go,
- 28:08Speaker 8: just do it. So he puts it on. He's like,
- 28:10Speaker 8: what the fuck? And like, I'm honestly, God, didn't even
- 28:15Speaker 8: know he acted.
- 28:17Speaker 3: I didn't even know he acted. Give me, dude.
- 28:20Speaker 8: He would wake up on our couch in the morning,
- 28:22Speaker 8: we'd have a party, he'd be one a couch in
- 28:24Speaker 8: the morning, and he's just one of our buddies.
- 28:26Speaker 3: I thought he's just the bartender at Cardwalls. I had
- 28:29Speaker 3: no idea.
- 28:30Speaker 8: I don't know if he was just like embarrassed to
- 28:32Speaker 8: say something, or I don't.
- 28:34Speaker 3: Know what the hell it was.
- 28:35Speaker 8: With him, but all of a sudden, I'm like, dude,
- 28:38Speaker 8: there's ammer And it was unbelievable.
- 28:41Speaker 3: And and you know, and I mean, I love the.
- 28:43Speaker 8: Guy to death, like like we have some we've had
- 28:46Speaker 8: some great time since then too, but we had great
- 28:48Speaker 8: times prior to that. And he there used to be
- 28:51Speaker 8: this thing called party in the Park and it was
- 28:53Speaker 8: that and here his restaurant was kind of a collecting,
- 28:55Speaker 8: a collection of where the younger people went. Yeah, and
- 28:59Speaker 8: he would just literally be pointing out girls, going, hey, listen,
- 29:03Speaker 8: there's a girl over here in the back at the restaurant.
- 29:05Speaker 8: You know, you got to see her. She's unbelievable. Great
- 29:08Speaker 8: gallat known he for. You got to see her. She's unbelievable.
- 29:11Speaker 8: So he was like the scout, the head scout for
- 29:14Speaker 8: the freaking hockey players. We were just coming in this
- 29:16Speaker 8: place and Ham would be bartend and he'd have everything
- 29:19Speaker 8: already set up. It was unbelievable. And then to know
- 29:22Speaker 8: that he was, you know, and to see how the
- 29:24Speaker 8: success he's having now is awesome.
- 29:26Speaker 3: You know.
- 29:27Speaker 8: So it's pretty easy to get him to come back,
- 29:29Speaker 8: come back and do things too. Because we've always included
- 29:32Speaker 8: him as one of the alumni who knew who knew.
- 29:37Speaker 4: I saw him at your at your event at Winter Classic,
- 29:39Speaker 4: and that's exactly the feeling I got. I was like,
- 29:42Speaker 4: this guy, you could put skates on him in difference.
- 29:46Speaker 3: Yeah, No, he loves it. He loves it.
- 29:48Speaker 8: And and it's funny because you know, like I've been lucky,
- 29:51Speaker 8: I've been lucky in the in the in the event
- 29:53Speaker 8: we did in Saint Louis, the Cancer of Incitans event,
- 29:57Speaker 8: calling guys in them showing up and completely name dropping. Now,
- 30:01Speaker 8: but when you see those guys show up, like on
- 30:04Speaker 8: Peyton show up and and Garth Brooks and Dirk Spentley
- 30:08Speaker 8: and those guys show up, it makes you feel good.
- 30:11Speaker 8: But it also puts things in perspective of just what
- 30:14Speaker 8: kind of people these guys are? You know, Ham showing
- 30:18Speaker 8: up at you know, all kinds of event. He's done
- 30:19Speaker 8: so many events for our alumni. Matter of fact, we
- 30:22Speaker 8: purchased a ring for him, the alumni did. I don't
- 30:25Speaker 8: know if you guys know, a Stanley Cup ring. Yeah,
- 30:27Speaker 8: we did a thing at the at the event, we
- 30:29Speaker 8: bought him a We bought him a ring and presented
- 30:33Speaker 8: it to him. Our our alumni had a huge event
- 30:35Speaker 8: in Kathy Napple and and him and his wife were
- 30:39Speaker 8: there and we did a little presentation and Hammer got
- 30:42Speaker 8: a ring and he was emotional, of course, but it
- 30:44Speaker 8: was like he's done so many things for our alumni over.
- 30:48Speaker 3: The years that it was like easy.
- 30:50Speaker 8: We're like, you know, Lord knows the amount of money
- 30:52Speaker 8: we've raised because he showed up.
- 30:54Speaker 3: You know, he showed up.
- 30:55Speaker 8: We did an event one night called the Dining Draft,
- 30:58Speaker 8: and you basically you show up at this event and
- 31:00Speaker 8: you draft a guy that you want to have dinner with,
- 31:02Speaker 8: and then you go to that restaurant and have.
- 31:04Speaker 3: Dinner with him.
- 31:05Speaker 8: So like we had Hull and Ozzie Smith and mckinnis
- 31:08Speaker 8: and Tory Holt and like all these great athletes, and
- 31:12Speaker 8: then of course Hammer, we sell him for eighty five
- 31:15Speaker 8: thousand bucks. You can go to dinner with Ham for
- 31:17Speaker 8: eighty five grand. The guy pays eighty five grand. Someone
- 31:20Speaker 8: pays eighty five grand for the Stanley Cup. It turns
- 31:23Speaker 8: out it's the same table they pay. They pay eighty
- 31:26Speaker 8: five So they get paid one hundred and seventy grand
- 31:28Speaker 8: to take the cup and and uh John Ham to
- 31:33Speaker 8: dinner and they buy one more player and they pay
- 31:35Speaker 8: five grand for Danny Cox to go for dinner. Danny
- 31:39Speaker 8: Cox is like, yeah, Ham and I raised one hundred
- 31:41Speaker 8: and seventy five grand with the Stanley Cup to go
- 31:44Speaker 8: go to go fucking dinner and and uh and we
- 31:48Speaker 8: had the dining draft and he goes amazing, that chunk
- 31:51Speaker 8: of metal can raise the same amount of money as
- 31:54Speaker 8: John Ham did. But those guys and Danny Cox raised
- 31:56Speaker 8: one hundred and seventy five thousand. So Cox he tells
- 31:59Speaker 8: everybody that, hey, you know what, Hamm and I and
- 32:02Speaker 8: the Cup we raised one hundred and seventy five It's
- 32:04Speaker 8: no big deal, A no.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Big deal though.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Kelly Chase obviously a great entertaining personality, a terrific player,
- 32:11Speaker 1: a wonderful human and an absolute fighter Chaser can't thank
- 32:14Speaker 1: you out man.
- 32:14Speaker 2: This was awesome.
- 32:15Speaker 8: Thanks a lot guys and that, and like I wasn't
- 32:17Speaker 8: knowing what to expect on this show. In a lot
- 32:19Speaker 8: of times, you guys canceled. I asked, I said, is
- 32:22Speaker 8: your hall of fame by one of their names or something?
- 32:23Speaker 8: I don't know about These fucking guys aren't that important?
- 32:35Speaker 2: All right? Thanks to Kelly Chase. Again, what a great storyteller.
- 32:37Speaker 1: He is, and we'll get to a little bit more
- 32:39Speaker 1: here involving some hockey news. But first will set of
- 32:41Speaker 1: file and sixty the twenty fifth anniversary of the talented
- 32:43Speaker 1: mister Ripley, which was sparked by the fact I read
- 32:46Speaker 1: this great book called The Yellow Face rf Quong came
- 32:49Speaker 1: in a couple of years ago.
- 32:50Speaker 2: I've got this cool little thing I'm.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Doing here tal at the library because they know I'm
- 32:53Speaker 1: an avid reader, so they said, we gent to sign
- 32:55Speaker 1: up for our concierge special.
- 32:56Speaker 2: I'm like, what is that?
- 32:57Speaker 1: They go, will we recommend a book for you, book
- 33:00Speaker 1: of fiction every month?
- 33:00Speaker 2: Like all right, fine. So the first book they recommend
- 33:02Speaker 2: it was awful, like anybody what it was.
- 33:03Speaker 1: But I'm like, I read like twenty pages ago this
- 33:05Speaker 1: was about idea, Like no, But since then, shout out
- 33:08Speaker 1: to my local library. They've like they're on a hater
- 33:10Speaker 1: four for four just great books from all over place,
- 33:13Speaker 1: different different genres, crime, fiction, history, novels, excellent.
- 33:16Speaker 2: So anyways, this one, yellow Face, I don't know what's about,
- 33:18Speaker 2: but it's a really great story came a couple of
- 33:20Speaker 2: years ago.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Fictional story about a writer who is very jealous of
- 33:24Speaker 1: another writer, their friends with kind of friend of me
- 33:26Speaker 1: is to hang out together. The one friend is incredibly successful,
- 33:29Speaker 1: rich author, the other one is an aspiring author, and
- 33:32Speaker 1: wes are having drinks one night, and the rich author
- 33:34Speaker 1: is a choking, dying.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Unbelievable story. The woman's you know, heartbroken, et cetera.
- 33:40Speaker 1: Kita also kind of really didn't like her that much
- 33:42Speaker 1: because they kind of have this love hate relationship. Before
- 33:45Speaker 1: she died, though, she was telling her about this manuscript
- 33:46Speaker 1: she had, this is this is my next book.
- 33:48Speaker 2: They're a little blitzed, but she's reading it.
- 33:50Speaker 1: She could tell you because this is awesome, this is
- 33:51Speaker 1: a great book, but she doesn't tell her friend that
- 33:53Speaker 1: because you kind of hate each other.
- 33:54Speaker 2: She's like, it's not bad. I'm a little drunk on
- 33:55Speaker 2: what's happening.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Friend dies, She steals the books, publishes the book under
- 33:59Speaker 1: her own name, ends up becoming a cause celebra Oh
- 34:02Speaker 1: my god, unbelievable book, and she's ratizes it by saying, well,
- 34:05Speaker 1: the actual book was still a little bit unfinished, like
- 34:07Speaker 1: I had to go.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Through it, clean it up a little bit.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Change this, change that, like her writing is incredible, but
- 34:12Speaker 1: like I am an author. In part, however, she doesn't
- 34:16Speaker 1: admit it, but becomes a sensation to all the amotter
- 34:19Speaker 1: of times someone finds out that she ripped it off.
- 34:21Speaker 2: The story goes in there. Great book check out yellow Face.
- 34:23Speaker 1: Anyways, the reason why I mentioned it is in the
- 34:25Speaker 1: blurb they said, well, it's kind of Patricia Heismanth style,
- 34:27Speaker 1: like a Patricia Heismith.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Oh that's right.
- 34:29Speaker 1: She wrote the talent to mister Ripley, speaking of assuming
- 34:31Speaker 1: one's persona stealing someone's work. So amazingly it tell I'd
- 34:35Speaker 1: never actually seen it. I remember when it came out.
- 34:36Speaker 2: It was in theaters.
- 34:37Speaker 1: Anthony Mangello directed the English Patient obviously, I remember Matt
- 34:40Speaker 1: Damons and.
- 34:40Speaker 2: It's just one of those moayes that kind of slipped
- 34:41Speaker 2: through the cracks.
- 34:42Speaker 1: Did It went in the Oscar So I didn't end
- 34:43Speaker 1: up watching it, but finally got around of seeing a
- 34:45Speaker 1: twenty fifth Unders and it was fantastic. I mean, what
- 34:48Speaker 1: was so great about watching it now is you know
- 34:50Speaker 1: all these actors are, but back then there's just so
- 34:51Speaker 1: fresh faced Damon Jude Law, Kate Blanchett, Gwyneth Baltrow and
- 34:56Speaker 1: of course two of my favorite actors, the incredible Philip
- 34:59Speaker 1: Seymour Hoff and showing up as Freddy and the great
- 35:02Speaker 1: investigator Philip Baker Hall. Great character actor Passway a few
- 35:04Speaker 1: years ago loved the movie. I love the glossy direction
- 35:07Speaker 1: of anthy Man Galiic got I should I should have
- 35:09Speaker 1: watched it years ago, just for the jazz and the
- 35:11Speaker 1: setting in Italy. Oh my god, it's gorgeous through in
- 35:13Speaker 1: Vanas shooting it there in Rome. Great cast again for
- 35:16Speaker 1: those who don't know the story, Damon is the talent
- 35:18Speaker 1: to mister Ripley. He assumes the prisona of Dickey, who's
- 35:21Speaker 1: played by Jude Law, the rich playboy. Another great character
- 35:23Speaker 1: actor James Rebhorn loved him from Stead of a Woman.
- 35:25Speaker 1: He plays the father of Jude Law, who sends him
- 35:28Speaker 1: over there to try, you know, get his son to
- 35:29Speaker 1: come back. But he assumes Dickie's identity. He got this
- 35:32Speaker 1: whole is he isn't He's gonna get caught, is gonna
- 35:34Speaker 1: catch up to him. But I thought it was an
- 35:35Speaker 1: excellent thriller, really fun. Damon seems to be having a blast.
- 35:38Speaker 1: This was two years after Good Will Hunt You, so
- 35:40Speaker 1: this really kind of establishes Chops as a leading actor.
- 35:42Speaker 2: With ut Ben Affleck and.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Again everything with Philip seemer Hoff and he's only in
- 35:45Speaker 1: at three scenes, but he's absolutely hysterical.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Go ahead, tell.
- 35:50Speaker 1: One of my favorite lines from Philip seymour Hoffman those
- 35:53Speaker 1: you wish you could fuck every woman just once.
- 35:57Speaker 2: That's got to me.
- 35:57Speaker 6: I was thinking of it.
- 35:58Speaker 1: I go, that's gonna be a list of greatest opening
- 36:00Speaker 1: lines ever by a character, because it's the first thing
- 36:02Speaker 1: he says in English. He pulls up and he goes, oh,
- 36:04Speaker 1: look right now, pretty said comes to DJ and he's right.
- 36:07Speaker 1: He gets out the car on the first thing he said,
- 36:09Speaker 1: just leering at the woman. I'm like, PSA, it's all
- 36:12Speaker 1: time great. But the reason also e J Reddick second
- 36:16Speaker 1: men she's getting He was talking about Ripley, the limited
- 36:18Speaker 1: series which Steve Zellien did Oscar winning writer of Schindler's List.
- 36:21Speaker 2: I know that came out a couple years.
- 36:22Speaker 1: I don't know what it was on Netflix, Apple TV
- 36:24Speaker 1: plus give Up last year, but been a lot of
- 36:25Speaker 1: talk around Ripley and Ripley such but the talented miss
- 36:28Speaker 1: Ripley absolutely fantastic. I encourage people to check her if
- 36:30Speaker 1: they have not yet done so, really really well done.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Congratulations to Lane Hudson named the recipient the Calder Trophy.
- 36:36Speaker 1: As expected, j D wins a top rookie out of
- 36:39Speaker 1: maclan Celberty and Dustin Wolf first HAPs put it win
- 36:41Speaker 1: the award since Ken Dryden back in nineteen seventy two.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Unbelievable season obviously for Lane Hudson and a great moment
- 36:48Speaker 1: for the Abs, right.
- 36:49Speaker 7: H Yeah, great mom for the Abs.
- 36:51Speaker 4: All the other voters can will fuck themselves that celeb
- 36:56Speaker 4: that Dustin Wolf is second in macklean Celberny's third. I
- 36:59Speaker 4: mean the fact that McLean Celburgny wasn't second, it wasn't
- 37:02Speaker 4: a tighter race is crazy.
- 37:03Speaker 2: To me U.
- 37:04Speaker 4: But nothing taken away from Laye Hudson. I think Lane
- 37:07Speaker 4: Hudson was the winner clear cut. I mean he brought up,
- 37:10Speaker 4: he brought the Canadians, helped the Canadians. I mean what
- 37:13Speaker 4: seventy points helped him get to the Stanley Cup playoffs,
- 37:17Speaker 4: and I mean he's credible, talent, amazing they got to
- 37:21Speaker 4: build around him in Montreal. But yeah, congratulations of that
- 37:23Speaker 4: little fucker.
- 37:25Speaker 2: No doubt about it.
- 37:26Speaker 1: And lastly you get to talk to billsy though again
- 37:28Speaker 1: doing a raat job the Steley Cup playoffs, and you
- 37:31Speaker 1: talked to bilsy To, who is the architect of Florida
- 37:33Speaker 1: Panthers team.
- 37:33Speaker 2: What was the big nuggets?
- 37:34Speaker 1: We're going to play a clip of it here, but
- 37:35Speaker 1: what was the main thing you gleaned from him?
- 37:38Speaker 4: Panthers on the Prowl. He's doing an amazing initiative with
- 37:42Speaker 4: his wife. They're selling these like ceramic panthers. I think
- 37:46Speaker 4: it's five grand for a panther and you're able to
- 37:50Speaker 4: paint it and design it any way you want, and
- 37:52Speaker 4: then it becomes like something and all the sport goes
- 37:55Speaker 4: to cancer research and cancer prevention. So it's it's a
- 37:59Speaker 4: very cool seems very close to his heart, like like
- 38:04Speaker 4: very very sincere interview, and he's an amazing man. He's
- 38:07Speaker 4: very nice to talk to and you're gonna hear some
- 38:10Speaker 4: great stuff here. So here's more Panthers on the Prowl
- 38:13Speaker 4: with Billy Zito.
- 38:14Speaker 5: But tell us.
- 38:15Speaker 10: About Panthers on the Prowl. You and your life started this.
- 38:19Speaker 10: We're gonna make sure the cameras can pick this up.
- 38:21Speaker 5: But tell us a little bit about this initiative and
- 38:22Speaker 5: why it was so important for you to start it.
- 38:24Speaker 6: Well, it's so important because it affects.
- 38:26Speaker 11: Look, I've never met you, and I know what affects you,
- 38:28Speaker 11: and I know what affects you, whether it's your family
- 38:30Speaker 11: or your friends. We had occasion to use this opportunity
- 38:36Speaker 11: to try to do some good and the American Cancer
- 38:38Speaker 11: Society asked us to share the campaign for the year.
- 38:43Speaker 11: And what a better way than for fund raising to
- 38:47Speaker 11: have everybody get a panther that buys the panther effectively
- 38:52Speaker 11: and then personalizes it.
- 38:54Speaker 6: And it might be fun.
- 38:55Speaker 11: It might be six Morning Goods or something like that, right, well,
- 38:59Speaker 11: paint it right, or the children's hospital and then someone
- 39:02Speaker 11: might buy.
- 39:02Speaker 6: One for Grandma. I'd be very personal. But it brings
- 39:05Speaker 6: people together in the community in a creative way.
- 39:08Speaker 11: We're trying to raise a million bucks and we're gonna
- 39:11Speaker 11: we're pretty much half way there, and it's just a
- 39:14Speaker 11: nice way to pull people together to do something decent
- 39:17Speaker 11: and celebrate our.
- 39:17Speaker 6: Great game and the community that is hockey.
- 39:21Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean, the community that is hockey is so tight,
- 39:24Speaker 11: But talk about the community here that you've seen grown exponentially,
- 39:28Speaker 11: that you've been a part of this organization. I think
- 39:31Speaker 11: the best part about it is I just start crying
- 39:36Speaker 11: the sincerity of the fans and the people that you mean,
- 39:39Speaker 11: and they come right up to you. I really don't
- 39:42Speaker 11: know much about hockey, or I don't still really don't
- 39:45Speaker 11: know much, but I love the Panthers.
- 39:47Speaker 6: I love what you're doing.
- 39:48Speaker 11: There's ball hockey in my kids' school, you know, the
- 39:52Speaker 11: guys in my neighborhood there, and it's just it sort
- 39:55Speaker 11: of transcends the excitement of the sport. Yeah, I mean,
- 39:58Speaker 11: I don't know how many people have told you Games
- 40:00Speaker 11: one and two. Oh my god, I never know it
- 40:02Speaker 11: was that good, right, And then so you've got the
- 40:06Speaker 11: entertainment and the sport.
- 40:07Speaker 6: We're growing the game, and then you have that relationship.
- 40:12Speaker 11: I may misuse the word symbios, but the way.
- 40:16Speaker 6: That the players in the community have come together.
- 40:18Speaker 11: And if you had occasion to see our parade last year,
- 40:21Speaker 11: did Yeah, it was travesty right, like thunderstorms, lightning. Oh
- 40:24Speaker 11: my god, it's awful. It was the best braid of
- 40:26Speaker 11: all time because everybody was in it together, and it's
- 40:29Speaker 11: just you could just see, you could just see how
- 40:32Speaker 11: the players in the community came together, and then it's
- 40:36Speaker 11: it's it's here.
- 40:36Speaker 6: It's real.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Well.
- 40:37Speaker 7: I played in a lot of non traditional hockey markets.
- 40:40Speaker 11: I played here, and I just find the connection with
- 40:42Speaker 11: the fan base is always almost deeper at times because
- 40:46Speaker 11: you really have to do a lot of outreach and
- 40:48Speaker 11: the fans when they come in, they love.
- 40:50Speaker 7: It because there's one of other.
- 40:51Speaker 11: Things that could be doing, but they just support so heavily,
- 40:53Speaker 11: so amazing work.
- 40:54Speaker 7: That you guys are doing.
- 40:55Speaker 11: And I think it's because of that, because of the
- 40:57Speaker 11: work you guys did, the players appreciate. Hey, wait a minute,
- 41:01Speaker 11: these fans are they're all in, they're coming, and it's
- 41:03Speaker 11: the buildings going.
- 41:04Speaker 6: To be loud. It's it's it's a lot of fun.
- 41:06Speaker 6: Like it's just it's all about.
- 41:08Speaker 5: The hockey community is special.
- 41:10Speaker 10: Also supporting your panthers on the Prowley saw Michael Boogley,
- 41:12Speaker 10: I saw NFL stars as well.
- 41:14Speaker 5: How special is it to have across.
- 41:16Speaker 10: Different platforms, across different sports than supporting your great cause.
- 41:20Speaker 11: Humbling, exciting, but really kind of brings the whole message
- 41:26Speaker 11: back everybody, everybody and that that is scary, scary, but
- 41:34Speaker 11: there are solutions and if you go to almost any on.
- 41:37Speaker 6: College and you say, if I give you the funding,
- 41:39Speaker 6: can you improve our odds?
- 41:41Speaker 11: So that's what it's all about as well, Like what
- 41:45Speaker 11: does this mean this to you and your wife Julie
- 41:47Speaker 11: like doing this and being a part of this.
- 41:53Speaker 6: I can speak for her on this. She's a survivor.
- 41:55Speaker 6: I'm not.
- 41:57Speaker 11: But when you have children, you know, when you have daughters,
- 42:00Speaker 11: mom whose mom is that? Geane and breastkets that dropped
- 42:05Speaker 11: the mic? You don't need to ask why.
- 42:07Speaker 6: And I don't know you guys do you have daughters?
- 42:11Speaker 11: But I mean I got a little seven weeks you right,
- 42:14Speaker 11: it's somebody And so we can do this in a
- 42:18Speaker 11: fashion will raise money, The money will say it lies, but.
- 42:21Speaker 6: We can bring people together, can actually ironically have fun
- 42:25Speaker 6: doing it.
- 42:26Speaker 11: And when you see some of the panthers, it's bread taking.
- 42:31Speaker 10: You've got one of the panthers here with you. I
- 42:33Speaker 10: think we got some camera angles.
- 42:34Speaker 5: But what do you hold it up for?
- 42:35Speaker 7: Hold it up for everybody?
- 42:39Speaker 11: So you and then you would you would the fulize
- 42:42Speaker 11: it however you want. It's amazing off the charge. Yeah,
- 42:46Speaker 11: it's a little intimidating. I mean that's incredible to have
- 42:51Speaker 11: and gifting and I mean just incredible stuff what you're
- 42:55Speaker 11: doing and you and your wife Juliet, and just amazing
- 42:58Speaker 11: things with the panthers.
- 42:59Speaker 7: Organization. I want to talk a little bit about hockey.
- 43:02Speaker 11: You coming in here and firing from the hymn and listen,
- 43:05Speaker 11: A lot of people would have said trading Jonathan Hubert
- 43:08Speaker 11: Oak matthew a Chock, Well, that's an industry trade.
- 43:10Speaker 7: Why did you do it?
- 43:11Speaker 11: It's great, but you understood that this team needed to
- 43:14Speaker 11: get to the next level. And nothing against Jonathan, but
- 43:16Speaker 11: that was the trade that needed to happen, and it
- 43:19Speaker 11: seems to have just galvanized your group. And how do
- 43:22Speaker 11: you come to terms of making a decision like that. Well,
- 43:28Speaker 11: I think maybe the process is probably what drives it.
- 43:32Speaker 11: And so the way that at least we go about
- 43:34Speaker 11: our business, certainly on the pro level, the detail, the
- 43:45Speaker 11: I'll use the word severity, of the of the work
- 43:48Speaker 11: that the scouts do, the comparing contrast against alternative information sources, analytics,
- 43:55Speaker 11: other scouts, it's a it's a pretty thorough process as
- 43:59Speaker 11: far as beating up a nocean, or should we do this?
- 44:02Speaker 6: Why okay? Why not? Okay? Why not? Back and forth,
- 44:06Speaker 6: back and forth.
- 44:07Speaker 11: It can get personal too, but at the end of
- 44:09Speaker 11: the day, that group works so hard that if we
- 44:13Speaker 11: come to a conclusion on something, it's generally pretty effective.
- 44:16Speaker 11: So I would say that that makes things a lot
- 44:19Speaker 11: easier when you have so many smart people who we're
- 44:24Speaker 11: committed and hardworking and virtuous in their emotion like this,
- 44:28Speaker 11: they'll give their opinion that Bill's needle can't play, but
- 44:32Speaker 11: he might be a nice guy, but he can't play right,
- 44:34Speaker 11: and then the other guy will advocate what he likes.
- 44:38Speaker 6: It's a pretty thorough process.
