- 0:10SPEAKER_05: We are coming to you live on tape from Radio City Music Home.
- 0:16SPEAKER_05: Celebrating the 100th episode of our little show, Dirt Map City.
- 0:21SPEAKER_05: My name is Alex.
- 0:22SPEAKER_05: I'm here with my buddy Kelly.
- 0:24SPEAKER_05: Let me set the tone for you all here.
- 0:27SPEAKER_05: Rend it out, Radio City Music Home.
- 0:30SPEAKER_05: I'm in a tuxedo.
- 0:32SPEAKER_05: I rented from um Alice former one.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: You like this?
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: I actually happen to have a tuxedo that I got at Goodwill that I'm wearing.
- 0:41SPEAKER_05: Well, when Kelly says it's a tuxedo, it's actually a t-shirt that looks like a tuxedo.
- 0:47SPEAKER_05: I don't know if you've ever seen one of those.
- 0:49SPEAKER_05: And it's faded, so it doesn't.
- 0:51SPEAKER_05: You know, I thanks for dressing up though.
- 0:53SPEAKER_05: You know the the sleeves cut off.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: But you know, sun's out, guns out, right?
- 0:58SPEAKER_05: Well, you know, it's prom season, so I didn't get the color I wanted, but you know, I think the baby blue is is a nice touch with the ruffled dickies.
- 1:06SPEAKER_05: Do you have a cumber bund?
- 1:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09SPEAKER_05: You see my uh cumberbund?
- 1:11SPEAKER_05: I got the tails.
- 1:12SPEAKER_05: Um you know they they talked me into getting the top hat and the cane, you know.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: That that salesperson at at Al's, very, very good.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Now, do you know what a cumberbund is for?
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: It's um no, I'm not sure I do.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: It's actually designed to catch crumbs.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: It's a crumb catcher.
- 1:34unknown: Yeah.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: So as you're as as you're sitting there eating and the crumbs fall into your lap, the cumberbund has these little uh pleats that face upward.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: And so your crumbs all go into the so that'll be perfect.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because we're having biscuits.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: It's biscuits and gravy on Dirt Knap City.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: And and by the way, we've got a we've got a we've got a studio audience um of invited celebrities and supporters.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Um sorry to our uh sorry to our Patreon supporters and our um you know the ones that actually pay us.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: We meant to get the invites sooner, but we didn't get about in time.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: But believe me, we're having a great time here with this audience, and your time will come.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: This audience, I'm thinking they might be here for something else, though.
- 2:20SPEAKER_05: That's the that's what I'm right.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: We're we're just the opening act, or maybe they just got their uh tickets mixed up.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: They thought they were seeing Hamilton.
- 2:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, well, you know, we spent ninety-eight thousand dollars to rent this building, and now I'm thinking we just we could have done this just at home because um Yeah, that might have been a mistake, but I thought the Roquettes would be here.
- 2:43SPEAKER_05: I only see one lady and she's got a mop.
- 2:46SPEAKER_05: So I don't know.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: She's she's but she is dancing, she is dancing around.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Well, this is our hundredth episode, and Alex, did you did you think we'd make it when we did episode one when Andre the Giant was uh was out?
- 3:00SPEAKER_05: You know, I for the last hundred hours I've re-listened to all of the episodes.
- 3:06SPEAKER_05: Nice.
- 3:07SPEAKER_05: And in episode one, which was uh, like you said, Andre the Giant, I made a reference to our 200th episode.
- 3:16SPEAKER_05: And I said, I'm picturing someone who's just listened to our 200th episode, uh, going back and listening to episode one and trying to see if it's you know, you know how like the Simpsons when you watch old episodes, it just it's hard to watch it's so different.
- 3:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:33SPEAKER_05: So Andre the Giants looks sounds a little different.
- 3:36SPEAKER_05: I think the microphones are different.
- 3:38SPEAKER_05: I think um there's no like bumper music at the beginning, yeah.
- 3:42SPEAKER_05: We go right into it, but you know, it's not super different.
- 3:46SPEAKER_05: It's it's we've we've uh we haven't changed too much.
- 3:49SPEAKER_05: Uh we've gotten older, we've gotten wiser, yeah, of course.
- 3:53SPEAKER_05: Um, and a lot more knowledgeable about uh dead people, that's for sure.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: I can tell you.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: We're great at parties.
- 4:01SPEAKER_05: We're gonna reminisce today, talk about some uh some of our favorite episodes um that we've gone through.
- 4:08SPEAKER_05: But yeah, this is our hundredth episode.
- 4:10SPEAKER_05: You know, we've had three doctors, we've had three saints.
- 4:13SPEAKER_05: Oh um uh do you know what three doctors off the top of your head?
- 4:18SPEAKER_05: Do you know what three doctors we uh had?
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Well, would that be uh Dr.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Shoel, um Dr.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Einstein, and Dr.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Carnegie?
- 4:31SPEAKER_05: No, you're right though.
- 4:33SPEAKER_05: We we've had probably more doctors if you I was going by their names.
- 4:39SPEAKER_05: We have Dr.
- 4:40SPEAKER_05: Seuss, Dr.
- 4:40SPEAKER_05: Spock, and Dr.
- 4:41SPEAKER_05: Shool.
- 4:43SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 4:43SPEAKER_05: We have people with with PhDs, we have medical doctors.
- 4:48SPEAKER_05: You're right.
- 4:48SPEAKER_05: We've probably got more than three doctors.
- 4:50SPEAKER_05: What three saints do you do you think we have had?
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Uh we've got Valentine, we've got uh uh Mother Teresa, she was a saint, right?
- 4:59SPEAKER_04: And we've got you're we've got four saints.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: Uh Valentine, Nicholas, and um Mother Teresa and I'm forgetting who the other one was.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Saint Patrick.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Saint Patrick, that's right.
- 5:15SPEAKER_05: So here's what I want to accomplish today.
- 5:17SPEAKER_05: I want to count up from the least uh least uh listen to episodes that um and I think the important thing in doing that is if you're new to our show um there may be some that you've skipped.
- 5:34SPEAKER_05: Now that's okay.
- 5:36SPEAKER_05: But there may be some that you've skipped, maybe some where the title doesn't uh float your boat, maybe some that you aren't interested in.
- 5:43SPEAKER_05: And we're gonna try to make a case on some of these um that are maybe less listened to episodes that you maybe should give it a chance because some of them are pretty good.
- 5:53SPEAKER_05: Um and then we're gonna count up to the most listened to episodes um of um of all of uh our dirt and up city.
- 6:04SPEAKER_05: So um I've got a spreadsheet in front of me with um plenty of uh information about some of my uh favorite things and just just like I said, kind of listening back to some of these and and hearing some things that uh maybe missed the first time.
- 6:20SPEAKER_05: I'm exhausted.
- 6:21SPEAKER_05: I've just spent a hundred hours listening to this uh that's showing that's commitment.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: That is definitely commitment.
- 6:27SPEAKER_05: Well, you know, I never listened to them the first time, and a lot of them I forget that we even did.
- 6:32SPEAKER_05: Um there's a few, and we'll get to them when we get to them.
- 6:35SPEAKER_05: I'll tell you, there's a few that not only did I forget we did, but I've actually almost done them again.
- 6:42SPEAKER_05: Oh, really?
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: You're like, hey, I got an idea.
- 6:45SPEAKER_05: We should we should really there's there's two in particular on here that I've um that I've literally like planned to do it again.
- 6:54SPEAKER_05: And I thought, well, this all sounds awful familiar.
- 6:56SPEAKER_05: Then I'll Jim Thorpe done it.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Or uh David Crockett.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: No, no, what are the ones are you gonna tell us as we go which ones you plan to do?
- 7:03SPEAKER_05: I'll tell you as we go.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you as we go.
- 7:05SPEAKER_05: And some of these I don't have anything to add.
- 7:07SPEAKER_05: Some of these um I won't have anything to say, but that's okay because we've got a hundred to get through and only a limited amount of time.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: We've actually got 99 to get through because this is a hundred.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: This is number a hundred, right?
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Oh, so this is be the least listened to episode.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: This is this because nobody's listened to it yet.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: This episode, as we're recording it, is definitely the least, and there are two others that are gonna have very low numbers.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Um last week was Enzo Ferrari.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Uh, any thoughts on Enzo Ferrari?
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: He was kind of a son of a guy.
- 7:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he was a rascal, Italian rascal, a rascioli.
- 7:43SPEAKER_05: If you liked Henry Ford, this is this will give you the opposite of Henry Ford.
- 7:48SPEAKER_05: He was really uh for two guys that were in the same business, they couldn't have been more different from each other.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, for sure.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: And then and then, of course, Jolt Cola was uh the week before that, and that one has only been out for a little while.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Uh it's trending pretty well.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Lots of uh people interested in the Jolt Cola.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: And the biggest takeaway from that one was first of all, you and I almost did the same um dead end, which hasn't happened yet.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Remember, you were looking at doing it, and then you were like, wait a minute, I was gonna do that, and you didn't, but I did.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: And then also for Jolt Cola, um, that they're gonna be making it again, that it's out in 2025.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: You can get it at uh your local grocery store.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: And so I wish I had one right now.
- 8:30SPEAKER_05: I wish we had a collab that we maybe had a dirt nap city edition of uh sponsored by Jolt Cola.
- 8:36SPEAKER_05: Yes, just our our logo on the side of a can, maybe too much jolt will put you in dirt nap city.
- 8:43SPEAKER_05: Well, you know, all those other podcasts, they have what do they have?
- 8:45SPEAKER_05: They're they have your liquid death, your Celsius, right?
- 8:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um so we we should be sponsored by uh a beverage, I think, right?
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I like that.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: All right, I'll get to work on that for season five.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Um, next after Jolt Cola was somebody that was right up the middle of our um our thing.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Somebody I'd heard of but didn't know anything about.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: And I've heard this from several other people that have listened to it.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Our our you know, we've got some real good fans out there.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: Um uh we've got uh Chris, we've got uh Al from Austin.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: Um I think neither one of them knew much about Rasputin until that episode.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: Oh, really?
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 9:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you could tell me.
- 9:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I liked doing Rest Putin because uh you hear about I had always heard about Rasputin, didn't realize how and how timely, you know, um musky, uh I think is the way you put it.
- 9:40SPEAKER_05: How musky he was, but very timely that he like just kind of quietly took over.
- 9:46SPEAKER_05: He was a real rascal too, and a great outro.
- 9:49SPEAKER_05: You know, I'm I'm gonna mention a lot of outros.
- 9:51SPEAKER_05: I think if you listen to Dirt Nap City and you listen to the first few minutes, like uh Jody, and then you fall asleep, you you gotta do yourself a favor and listen to the music at the end.
- 10:03SPEAKER_05: True.
- 10:04SPEAKER_05: This one in particular has a great outro by uh Boney M.
- 10:08SPEAKER_05: Bony M, yep.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: We even got a copyright strike on that one because we used Boney M's song.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: My boy uh Johnny from Atlanta uh really liked that song, and he was blown away by the fact that when you Google it and you look it up on YouTube, it's got like 500 million views.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: That video does for Boney M.
- 10:27SPEAKER_05: It's a great song.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Not the episode about Ris Buten, but the Boney M song.
- 10:32SPEAKER_05: Boney M, if you're listening, don't sue us, man.
- 10:35SPEAKER_05: Come on the show.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, we'd love to have you.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: We'd love to see what you think about Ris Buten.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: We could do a Rus Buten Part 2 electric boogaloo.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: Rasputin, as he would call it.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Well, you know what?
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: You said that several times.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: Poutine is actually French fries and cheese curds and gravy up in French can French Canada.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: So be careful saying poutine.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, we did have an episode before that that was a real wake-up call.
- 11:04SPEAKER_05: Like a rooster.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: If you don't know what a wake-up call is, if you're if you're young enough to not know what that is, listen to that episode and and you'll discover something amazing that us old folks used to do.
- 11:16SPEAKER_05: There's a great YouTube short.
- 11:18SPEAKER_05: Um, let's let's give a quick shout out to our YouTube shorts.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: Um, yes, there's some video.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: Chris, the editor.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: Chris, Chris is killing him.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: He's doing all kinds of great things with the YouTube shorts, and we appreciate that very much.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: We're building it up.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: We've got like 250 subscribers on YouTube now.
- 11:36SPEAKER_05: Did you know that?
- 11:37SPEAKER_05: I did.
- 11:38SPEAKER_05: I did.
- 11:38SPEAKER_05: And some of those, um some of those are really popular, some of those YouTube uh shorts.
- 11:44SPEAKER_05: I think I think what Chris does that's magic is listens to the episode and then finds a little nugget that um that would lend itself.
- 11:53SPEAKER_05: That particular episode, he thought it was funny that I was so stressed out by um about making a wake-up call.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Being the guy that has to do the wake-up call, not receive the wake-up call.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: So I'm the butt of that joke.
- 12:07SPEAKER_05: But I'm I'm okay with that.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Well, um, the next one in terms of popularity, we're starting to get up into the low millions now.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Uh, is what were Zeppelins?
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: What was your takeaway from our Zeppelin episode?
- 12:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, my takeaway from the Zeppelin uh is that you buried the lead, and at the very end, you just casually mentioned that you wrote in the Goodyear blimp, but you had no pictures of it and almost no memory of it.
- 12:36SPEAKER_05: Uh that you've very you have all these stories of things that have happened to you in the past, and that is one of the most remarkable things I've heard about you, but you almost have no memory of it and no photo evidence.
- 12:48SPEAKER_05: And if you know Kelly, you would know that back then he was always with a camera, video camera, usually.
- 12:56SPEAKER_05: True.
- 12:56SPEAKER_05: So it's just odd one thing that he would actually want a camera for.
- 13:01SPEAKER_05: He didn't have one.
- 13:03SPEAKER_05: So that one I still is shady to me.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Alex, if I have to put you in touch with my mother, she'll verify.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: She'll verify that.
- 13:10SPEAKER_05: I believe you, I just don't understand why it didn't make more of an impression.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: It's like that, it's like that time I didn't believe you about your uh Coonskin cap, and your mom verified that for us.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: So thank you.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: And thank you to your mother, by the way, is being one of our sponsors.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: We we appreciate that.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: And Scott as well.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: We've got some great sponsors that are helping us offset our cost for Buzz Sprout, the platform we use to distribute.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Um, so thank you guys.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: Who needs Joe Cola when you have moms, right?
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Well, and who needs um hardwood floors when you got Shag Carpet, right?
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, is that the next one?
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: That is the next one, yeah.
- 13:49SPEAKER_05: So Shag Carpet is the shortest episode we've ever done.
- 13:53SPEAKER_05: It's 13 minutes.
- 13:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, really, it's only 10 minutes because um there's a a real banger of an episode.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: Three minutes of it is a song.
- 14:01SPEAKER_05: It's uh it's a real banger, though.
- 14:02SPEAKER_05: I like it about uh Shag uh a Shag Carpet uh song that uh says the word shag carpet a lot in the song.
- 14:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 14:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 14:11SPEAKER_05: That was a good that was a good one.
- 14:12SPEAKER_05: If you if you have 10 minutes or 13 minutes, um check out our uh thoughts on Shag Carpet.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and um if you also have a short amount of time, because this is a pretty quick one as well.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: We talked about goldfish swallowing in our next most popular episode.
- 14:28SPEAKER_04: I wonder why people aren't into that one.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: Well, it's funny because uh yeah, that one's been out for a while, and it seems like um that would be something more people would want to know about, but it seems like you had to go to an Ivy League school to be a goldfish swallower.
- 14:41SPEAKER_05: And the thing about that one is it got kind of deep and ethical.
- 14:45SPEAKER_05: I uh something so silly.
- 14:47SPEAKER_05: It got really into like animal rights and all that.
- 14:50SPEAKER_05: Um see the softer side of Kelly.
- 14:53SPEAKER_05: Um, but goldfish swallowing that's from uh that's from uh September of 2024.
- 14:59SPEAKER_05: So yeah, I gotta check out the goldfish swallowing episode.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: And and a month later we tackled hippies.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, we not literally, we didn't literally tackle how often have you wanted to tackle a hippie?
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: That's what I was about to ask.
- 15:12SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 15:12SPEAKER_05: Now that was an in-person episode.
- 15:14SPEAKER_05: We did that together in the same room.
- 15:16SPEAKER_05: We've done a few of those.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:18SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah, always fun.
- 15:20SPEAKER_05: And the outro to that was not hippie-like at all.
- 15:23SPEAKER_05: It was our uh, we have a few styles of outros, and and um, you know, in terms of the music that we play at the end, uh we started playing these uh AI generated songs, and they kind of all sound like the same singer, but there's kind of two variations.
- 15:39SPEAKER_05: There's the guy that sounds like Nickelback, the and then there's the country guy, and then there's the country guy that's like country auto tune.
- 15:46SPEAKER_05: The hippies one was a country auto-tune mess, but that's what made it so special, I think.
- 15:52SPEAKER_05: Um, but that was a good episode.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: Uh you know, I create those songs, and you can usually tell how tired um I am of editing that episode um by how much time I spend on the song.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I just type in a prompt, and whatever it spits out, that's what it is.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: Well, I love it.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: But sometimes I spend a little time.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Um, well, so speaking of uh AI generated songs, we kind of went in a weird direction with our next most popular episode.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: It was another dead end about believing what you hear.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: Oh and how that kind of started all that.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: One of our one of our super fans, Chris, actually made some fake uh some fake uh phrases, some fake voices of you and I talking, saying things we didn't actually say.
- 16:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that was that was cool.
- 16:38SPEAKER_05: And that started that was kind of before we started the uh the AI songs, but not it was right right before, right before that.
- 16:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that was kind of freaky, but um very informative.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: And then we went pretty retro with our next dead end.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: Um, and again, these aren't in the order that we did them, these are in the order of popularity.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: So uh our our 70 uh I don't even know which, but uh like one of our least popular, it's you know, number 90 in the list was the Columbia House Record Club, which I thought was a great episode.
- 17:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we also did that in person, and um our uh engineer Chris had never heard of Columbia House.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: He's a little younger than us, but he never got the the joy of having that record or cassette show up, or 13 of them show up, and then uh blaming it on your brother for ordering them or your or your friend or something.
- 17:32SPEAKER_05: I think that's a funny thing is that we're kind of targeted towards people our age, which is like mid-50s.
- 17:39SPEAKER_05: Um, so someone like Chris, who's you know, probably 15 years, maybe 20 years younger.
- 17:45SPEAKER_05: I don't know how old the guy is.
- 17:46SPEAKER_05: How old is he?
- 17:48SPEAKER_05: 30 something.
- 17:49SPEAKER_05: All right, so yeah, so he's a millennial.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: 20 something years old.
- 17:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:55SPEAKER_05: Uh he he I think it's fun when he learns something about our generation.
- 18:00SPEAKER_05: It's like teaching something to a a young young buck.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and that's the thing, is I think if if you feel like you want to know more about what went on in the 80s or even before that, uh these dead ends are a great thing to learn.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: And also, if you just want to have something to talk about at parties, I mean Dirt Knap City is is all kinds of party talk, right?
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: This is stuff.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: How how I mean, how cool is it to walk up to somebody at a party and say, hey, how much do you know about Prohibition?
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: You know, especially while you're holding a drink in your hand.
- 18:33unknown: Yeah.
- 18:33SPEAKER_05: Because that was our next episode.
- 18:35SPEAKER_05: Go to your car, listen to the episode, and then go right into the party.
- 18:38SPEAKER_05: It's like a party pump, you know, when you work out right before a party and your muscles get all swole.
- 18:45SPEAKER_05: So Prohibition, yeah, that was another in-person one that we did.
- 18:49SPEAKER_05: Um, that was the longest dead end that we've had.
- 18:52SPEAKER_05: It clocks in around 30 minutes.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: No, no, Zeppelin's was longer.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: Oh, was it?
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: Zeppelin's was Zeppelin's was close to an hour.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: I I tend to go, those were both ones that I was in the driver's seat, and I tend to go deep on those dead ends.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: But um, you know, speaking of hopping in your car and listening to it and maybe doing a line or two at the same time, uh, the next one is John DeLorean.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's what John DeLorean is.
- 19:17SPEAKER_05: So John DeLorean has one of my favorite outros.
- 19:22SPEAKER_05: Um, it's still one of those country auto-tune uh things, but it's a banger.
- 19:27SPEAKER_05: Right, right.
- 19:27SPEAKER_05: I really, really like that one.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: Nice, nice.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: Well, um, if you were around at the time of John DeLorean, you might also remember iPods, which was next, uh is the next most popular.
- 19:40SPEAKER_05: I think it might not be popular because a lot of people still have iPods.
- 19:44SPEAKER_05: So maybe once those become more of a thing in the past, it's too soon.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Literally, when they say too soon.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: Well, this is not too soon.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: Sundials.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: Sundials is uh is is kind of probably our I don't know, I'm gonna say like 85th most popular uh episode so far.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: Um, not much to say about Sundials.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: That was a short episode, but that leads us right into one that we've mentioned a few times today, and that's Henry Ford.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: And who knew what a what a scoundrel that guy was?
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Like he he did some pretty shady things.
- 20:18SPEAKER_05: I think we did some great journalism by exposing Henry Ford for the Nazi that he was.
- 20:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it was a little, you know, 80 years later, but you know, we're just coming to the party late on this.
- 20:30SPEAKER_05: You know, he was a Nazi.
- 20:32SPEAKER_05: He convinced a lot of people to be Nazis, but he did bring in the five-day work week.
- 20:37SPEAKER_05: So, you know.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, and and uh and made cars affordable for most people.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, so you gotta that's the thing, is most of these people are pretty complex.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: They have a good side and a bad side, and you can't judge them for just one or the other.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: You kind of gotta look at the whole picture, which is what we do on this show.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: Although, if someone's a Nazi, I think they're um not not a good person.
- 21:03SPEAKER_05: Can I say that?
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna flip it around to somebody who who probably was about as far opposite of Henry Ford as you get, and that was John Lennon.
- 21:12SPEAKER_05: Oh, you think he was that's the opposite of Henry Ford is John Lennon?
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: I feel like if you if you're looking for opposites, John Lennon and I also share a birthday, which is kind of cool.
- 21:23SPEAKER_05: Um now that was the clue that you gave.
- 21:26SPEAKER_05: Uh, you said here's the clue is that he has the same birthday as me.
- 21:31SPEAKER_05: Um probably the worst clue you've ever given.
- 21:36SPEAKER_05: Because I don't know your birthday, and even if I did, I don't know all these other people's birthdays either.
- 21:41SPEAKER_05: But then the clue that you eventually gave was pretty easy about the glasses, I think.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: Um if you recognize his distinctive glasses, you would know.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: If you know, you know.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: Um, and then we had uh next in our popularity, and this was also a October 2024.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Episode and it's doing pretty well is our pal Typhoid Mary.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: Now, there's one I had heard of but didn't know anything about, and Alex educated me.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Mary Mallon.
- 22:12SPEAKER_05: Right?
- 22:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 22:13SPEAKER_05: Mary Mallon.
- 22:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I that was one of my favorites.
- 22:17SPEAKER_05: You know, a lot of times people ask me, what's the favorite, your favorite one you've done?
- 22:21SPEAKER_05: This this comes up a lot.
- 22:23SPEAKER_05: Um, the song that you put in for this one, yeah.
- 22:28SPEAKER_05: Um, I wish that we had the money to have Billie Eilish perform that song.
- 22:33SPEAKER_05: I think she would do a great job with that.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: She would kill it.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: Anything about Typhoid Mary, Billie Eilish.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: There they go hand in hand.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: They're not opposites at all.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: If Typhoid Mary was alive today, she'd be a singer in the style of Billie Eilish for sure.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: Maybe.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: Um, and you know what show she would probably be on?
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: She'd probably be on the Carol Burnett show, which was a variety show, another dead end from uh May of 2024.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: Um, now there's one that that kids today probably don't understand at all.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: Like, what was the appeal of watching all these old people sing songs and do dances?
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: And you know, I can't do this without mentioning Shields and Yarnell doing their thing, um, doing their pantomiming.
- 23:16SPEAKER_05: Uh and I would watch those and just wade around for the comedy, like wade through all the bad music just for the comedies that usually would be.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: Like the three minutes of Red Skelton.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: Um, so speaking of dumb things from the past, uh, the pet rock is coming in kind of in our 75-ish.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: Um what the heck was going on with pet rocks?
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:44SPEAKER_05: Um this was uh one that that um I don't have a lot to to to say.
- 23:50SPEAKER_05: I probably didn't have a lot to say then either, but it was a good uh way uh it was a good reminisce uh reminiscing about the pet rock.
- 23:57SPEAKER_05: It was a really a dumb thing that we did.
- 24:00SPEAKER_05: Not that we didn't still buy them.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's right.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you can still buy them on Amazon.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: You can still know what I just saw.
- 24:08SPEAKER_05: Um we're probably when you're listening to this, we're probably into May or something, but um we're recording this uh right around Easter time, and I saw that people are painting because eggs are so expensive, that people are painting rocks um and hiding them for Easter, and it reminded me of the pet rock.
- 24:32SPEAKER_05: Um so yeah, lives on.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: Might be time to buy stock in a pet rock company.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: You never know.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: It's like the new or or maybe there's a pet rock crypto we could come out with.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: Cheaper than eggs.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: But you know, one thing you can't buy or you can't get eggs for is dodo birds.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: They are uh they are not doing well these days.
- 24:53SPEAKER_05: So this is one that I keep forgetting that I did, and that I've you're gonna do it again to.
- 24:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I've come back to and almost done it again.
- 25:01SPEAKER_05: Because it's just such a like stereotypical dead end.
- 25:05SPEAKER_05: When you think of things that aren't around anymore, it's kind of like uh on the flag of things that aren't around anymore.
- 25:10SPEAKER_05: It's the dead end flag.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: It's also on also on the flag of Mauritius, right?
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: Right, that's right.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: The dodo bird.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Good memory.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: Uh, yeah, yeah.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: Um, well, shout out to my pal Richard, who told me about Mauritius for the first time.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: Um, and if I was gonna shout out to him, I might do it over a CB radio.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: Might just pick it up and say Breaker 19, Richard.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: How are you doing?
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: Oh Mauritius man.
- 25:34SPEAKER_05: Another great YouTube short for CB radios with the uh visuals of the the smokies and the um the yeah, yeah, all that all that stuff.
- 25:46SPEAKER_05: There's great animation with that.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: The lot if I can read that the lot lizards.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: Um well now we have one that's not been out very long.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: It's only about two weeks old, but it's it's already like kind of becoming one of the more popular episodes pretty quickly.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: Because it's interesting, you know, the longer an episode is out, the more popular it should be, you know, by pure uh time, right?
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: It has more time for more people to download it.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: But this one's only been out for a short period of time, and it's already uh ahead of all the others we've mentioned so far, and that's the Wright Brothers.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Now, I understand, Alex, that your mother has not listened to that one yet.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: What's what gives?
- 26:23SPEAKER_05: She probably has by the time we're listening to that.
- 26:25SPEAKER_05: She was just a little tardy with the uh Wright Brothers.
- 26:28SPEAKER_05: I'm sure she's listened to that.
- 26:30SPEAKER_05: Uh a relatively long episode.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: In case she hasn't, Maxine, I'm gonna I'm gonna tell you, I'm gonna give you uh give you a spoiler.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: Um, they they invented the airplane.
- 26:41SPEAKER_05: 66 minutes, one of our longer um you know episodes.
- 26:46SPEAKER_05: Uh but a great bluegrass outro to the rape brothers episode.
- 26:51SPEAKER_05: Love that one.
- 26:52SPEAKER_05: That's another style that we seem to have a lot of outros to you know, you know what that's inspired by?
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: Click and clack.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: You remember the Tappet brothers?
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: They had a bluegrass intro and outro, and I always like that.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, car talk.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: Um, I think only one of them's alive.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: Maybe we should uh when the when when the second one dies, maybe we should do an episode about them.
- 27:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, some of these people we just have our finger on the button, ready to go.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: Um, well, speaking of something that should have died a long time ago, but still exists in I think Sweden is uh flagpole sitting.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: They still do that uh in a couple of countries.
- 27:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it was from June 2024.
- 27:32SPEAKER_05: Um kind of a weird, um, weird trend that uh really didn't last very long, but um it was right up there with Goldfish Swallowing and uh Harvey Harvey Danger, right?
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: Um so drive-in movies is the next one, and uh that's pretty pretty interesting.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: They're still around in very small numbers, but not nearly as popular as they used to be.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: By the way, that can be a dead end.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: A dead end can be something that does still exist, just not at the pinnacle of popularity that it once existed.
- 28:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think most of the dead ends that we end up doing, it turns out there there are more than we uh maybe think, but you just don't see them a lot around anymore.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: So the next one um going up in popularity, only been out for about three months, and I was really proud.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: This is a 2025 one.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: It's uh scratch and sniff.
- 28:24SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 28:25SPEAKER_05: Uh I I at Christmas time I was not able to locate that book.
- 28:29SPEAKER_05: I thought it was just I thought it was 15 feet away from you.
- 28:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I thought it was too.
- 28:33SPEAKER_05: I think it's in a box that's hard to get to, but um, I was I was excited about that.
- 28:39SPEAKER_05: Um, I was gonna bring that to you, but um, I'm still working on that.
- 28:43SPEAKER_05: Just to let you know, I'm still working on that.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I really want to, I really want to see if those uh if those pine trees smell like pine trees.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a new year's resolution of mine that I'll have to get to.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: I'm you know, you asked about kind of favorite episodes.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: I definitely really like the scratch and sniff.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: I loved when we kind of started talking about John Waters and Divine and Smell OVISION and lot of uh tangents on that one.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: Um one that one that I kind of struggled with because sometimes I take on these people that take on uh like amazing things in life and have done so many things it's almost hard to narrow it down, and that was Marco Polo.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: That was from September of 2024.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Um not I I mean it's a good episode if you want to do about Marco Polo.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: I feel like I meandered a little bit in that one, but um, but there it is.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: He's an interesting dead person, so he fits our fits our uh category.
- 29:34SPEAKER_05: And a great rap AI outro to that.
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: True, true.
- 29:38SPEAKER_05: That that's it.
- 29:38SPEAKER_05: Where he talks about kids in the pool.
- 29:40SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 29:42SPEAKER_05: It's nonsense.
- 29:43SPEAKER_05: So the way the AI outros work is that uh, like Kelly said, you type stuff in that we had talked about in the episode, and the AI kind of grabs whatever it grabs.
- 29:55SPEAKER_05: So it was talking about kids in a pool, but Kublicon, it was as confusing as you can imagine.
- 30:01SPEAKER_05: It doesn't really give you any information.
- 30:03SPEAKER_05: Um, but funny.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Well, and and uh actually great AI song outro for Jim Thorpe.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: Um, because that was kind of a heavy metal song, as I recall.
- 30:12SPEAKER_05: Like kind of a nickelback, that was the Nickelback one.
- 30:15SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 30:16SPEAKER_05: Um in fact, we could almost revive Nickelback's career just by doing our our songs.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: Maybe they should just do our music for us.
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: I'm also gonna say something interesting that Scratch and Sniff, Marco Polo, Jim Thorpe, and Sony Walkman, which is next, all have very, very similar download numbers.
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: Like there's a period of time uh there about seven months ago where people were downloading uh like these about the same amount.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: So Sony Walkman, you did the iPod, you did the Walkman.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: Which of those is better, by the way?
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: The the episode or the the device?
- 30:52SPEAKER_05: The device, that's what I meant.
- 30:55SPEAKER_05: Uh I think the iPod's probably better than the Walkman.
- 30:58SPEAKER_05: But at the time, the Walkman was probably better, like there's something more revolutionary.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: There's something about the Walkman that's super cool.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: Um, and then there's the America's oldest teenager, Dick Clark, um, from November of 2024.
- 31:15SPEAKER_05: This was one of my favorite episodes, tons of dick jokes.
- 31:20SPEAKER_05: Um not actual dick jokes, just just giggle Kelly giggling at the word dick.
- 31:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 31:27SPEAKER_05: Um and by far my very favorite outro ever.
- 31:34SPEAKER_05: Um it's about 20 seconds.
- 31:37SPEAKER_05: It just says it just says what Dick Clark's name was, it says what his alias was, it says that he owned some hamburger chains, and then it and then it dips out.
- 31:49SPEAKER_05: I it's I can't hear it without laughing out loud every time.
- 31:53SPEAKER_05: And the story behind that.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: I guess.
- 31:55SPEAKER_05: If already listened to that episode, just listen to it the end again.
- 32:00SPEAKER_05: It will, it's so funny.
- 32:01SPEAKER_05: I don't know why it's so funny.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: I tell you what happened.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: I put the prompt in, but it I had the little checkbox for lyrics, so it thought I was putting in lyrics, and what what it actually sings is the prompt that I put in, but it does it so well that it sounds intentional.
- 32:17SPEAKER_05: Um yeah, and it was like a do-wop, like a 50s do-up uh style.
- 32:23SPEAKER_05: It was it was the kind of song that if you were at the Dick Clark restaurant, you would want it to play on a loop in the in the jukebox.
- 32:31SPEAKER_00: For maybe for maybe three times, and then you would be ready to throw a hammer.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: It's only about 20 seconds, but it is it's perfect.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: It it also might be good for um the special forces in the Middle East to use for fighting terrorists, right?
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: You know, when they play those songs like psychological warfare.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: Well, I love it.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: I've listened to it ten times in the last two days.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: I swear I love it.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: And in case you're wondering what a synthesizer is, another dead end uh that that Alex, I think, came up with, kind of fit into our music and rock and roll theme a little bit about, you know, are synths rock, are they are they lame?
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: Are they, you know, we have a lot of opinions about synthesizers.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: If you want to hear them, or if you have an opinion about a synthesizer, you'll definitely want to listen to that episode.
- 33:15SPEAKER_05: I kind of immediately regretted that though, because uh it seemed like for the next three weeks after I did that, all I heard was synthesizer music, like new music.
- 33:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 33:25SPEAKER_05: Um, not sure it's as much of a dead end as I had given it credit for at the time.
- 33:30SPEAKER_05: I think synthesizers are still out there.
- 33:32SPEAKER_05: My point was that used to be like a dominating lead instrument in the in the 80s, and now it's it's only used on special occasion.
- 33:42SPEAKER_05: Um but it's still pretty prevalent in music today.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: So the other night I went downtown and met up with uh my son.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: Jody and I went down and met up with our son and his girlfriend, and we walked through campus, kind of north, um, no, south towards uh MLK, and we walked down the street where that Gaddi's used to be, uh, where you where you referenced the all you can eat.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: And I think now it's a raising canes.
- 34:10SPEAKER_05: I think you might be right.
- 34:11SPEAKER_05: That it was the Wendy's that I was talking about.
- 34:14SPEAKER_05: Oh, the Wendy's, yeah, superbar.
- 34:16SPEAKER_05: The uh all you but the all you can eat, yeah, was one of the uh one of the first uh dead ends that uh that we did, I think.
- 34:23SPEAKER_05: Uh that was in March 2024.
- 34:25SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 34:26SPEAKER_05: That was the one where you talked about, I think there's a great YouTube short on that too, where you talked about uh gum in the gum in the salad bar.
- 34:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: Now uh I'll tell you, after that gum, I decided not to pay, and so I skipped out on writing a check or paying the check in that case.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: But writing a check was also a dead end.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: People don't write checks anymore.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: Rarely do people write checks.
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: This is one where it happens occasionally, but nothing like it used to, you know.
- 34:54SPEAKER_05: Probably my favorite YouTube short of all of them.
- 34:59SPEAKER_05: Um, the animation on that of the actual with the dirtnap city uh checkbook.
- 35:06SPEAKER_05: Um, and uh great job by uh by uh Chris uh creating that.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, seriously, if you're a fan of this show, the podcast, um jump over to YouTube and just uh subscribe to our YouTube channel as well because the shorts are really they're they're fire.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: They're fire.
- 35:22SPEAKER_05: Usually you see us, you can see us.
- 35:24SPEAKER_05: If you don't know what we look like, you can see us, and then usually uh Chris has some kind of crazy animation that kind of uh yeah um they'll make you they're like 30 seconds, yeah.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're all they're short, they're they're called shorts.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: Um so VDAL Sassoon is also one that was not that long ago.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: It's a 2025 episode.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: It's doing well in the it's charting well, it's kind of you know mid middle of the middle of the um pack as far as popularity goes, and not been out that long.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: There is one that I didn't know, but I have to tell you a funny story, actually, Alex, about that episode.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: You want to hear it?
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: So the other day, Chris is over here at my house and uh he's helping us work on a project.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: Jody and I are outside with Chris, and then this guy pulls up on a bike.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: Uh he's riding down the street, and I think I told you we're moving, you know, we're kind of packing some things in the house, and he it's one of our neighbors.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: Chris recognized him because I mentioned him.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: It was my neighbor Patrick, who I said, you were talking about like men's hairstyles, and I was saying Patrick has the best hair ever.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: Um, Patrick wrote up and Chris said, You must be Patrick.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: And I was No way, yeah, yeah.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: He he knew he remembered the Vidal Sassoon episode and remembered that Patrick was somebody we referenced, and he got to meet Patrick.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: And I gave Patrick a Dirt Knap City episode uh uh sticker, asked him to listen.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: I hope he's not offended by the Vidal Sassoon one because I don't think I said anything bad.
- 36:52SPEAKER_05: I just I mean, how great is that that just by seeing a guy with great hair, uh and that's learning, you know, that's we're we're educating America one uh one person at a time.
- 37:02SPEAKER_05: Vidal Sassoon also has one of my favorite outro songs.
- 37:06SPEAKER_05: I think I told you I would love to do a music video of that song.
- 37:10SPEAKER_05: Yes, but that's in the cards for uh for the next year or so.
- 37:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, and I really enjoyed talking about hair with you.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, it's something we don't talk about enough.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: Uh bee stings and hair.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: We'll probably talk about it the exact amount that we should.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: So um going back to your Coonskin hat, uh cap, uh Davy Crockett was the next one up there.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: It's a 2024 episode.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: Um, and like I said, Vital Sassoon is already about to pass Davy Crockett in terms of downloads, but I thought David Crockett was a pretty good episode.
- 37:44SPEAKER_00: I enjoyed the the manliness of that one.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: And they may go to hell, and I will go to Texas.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: Yes, sir.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: Now, another dead end that uh I think everyone can agree is not something that we do very much anymore was writing in cursive.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: And uh that that's that one's doing pretty well.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: That's something that uh people are wanting to download right here in the middle of the pack.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: If you don't know or never wrote in cursive, or if you do, if you did write in cursive and you missed doing it, you you'll want to listen to this.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: It's a trip down memory lane.
- 38:16SPEAKER_05: Just saw something in the news not too long ago.
- 38:18SPEAKER_05: I think it was the state of Arkansas that is having a uh a battle at the state level and their school board trying to figure out whether to bring back cursive in the schools.
- 38:28SPEAKER_05: A lot of the old timers are saying they uh they need to bring it back in the schools, and um, of course, that sounds preposterous to um anybody under 60 years old.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: So it it does, but actually, I think I mentioned this in the episode.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: Um, there have been some studies that say people who write in cursive uh like live longer, have better uh GPAs or get higher grades or something.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: It's there's something about writing in cursive in your brain that actually fires some things.
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: I don't want to do it.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: I don't write in cursive, and I'm not gonna start again.
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: But maybe it's not just a bunch of crazy old coots trying to bring it back.
- 39:06SPEAKER_00: Maybe there's actually some science behind it.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: Do you know Mark Robert?
- 39:08SPEAKER_05: Let's get Mark Rober in on this and see if he'll let's um well, maybe in uh 50 years, maybe Arkansas will lead the nation in uh education.
- 39:16SPEAKER_05: Right, right.
- 39:17SPEAKER_00: Instead of being number 48, they'll be number three or something.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: Arkansas, Mississippi, we're looking at you.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: Uh Arkansas.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: Uh waterbeds.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: Shout out to my boy Matt Brames for uh kind of outed him in this episode.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: But the only the only waterbed I ever really spent any time on, uh not in the way you think.
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: We would just hang out in his room.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: This was uh, you know, like seventh, eighth grade.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: Uh Matt Brames, yeah.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: Waterbed.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: I didn't know we were naming names until that episode.
- 39:45SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 39:46SPEAKER_05: All the guardrails came off.
- 39:48SPEAKER_00: Well, we only named dead names before, but now we're naming live names.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: Because that's you're playing with live, you're playing with uh live ammo at that point.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: Litter bugs.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: That was uh that was one that um you said disappeared.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: I don't know, man.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: I've seen a lot of trash out there, but uh you you called it a dead end.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: You said I think you stood on an aircraft carrier with a big sign that said mission accomplished, no more litter or something.
- 40:13SPEAKER_05: Did you do that?
- 40:14SPEAKER_05: This is the one where we learned that you um knew the people behind the no don't mess with Texas.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: Litterbug uh didn't accomplish the mission.
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: CD ROMs, that was kind of the next one.
- 40:26SPEAKER_00: That was an early one in our uh endeavor into uh dead ends.
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: But you remember what our first dead end was?
- 40:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the uh first dead end was Photomat.
- 40:38SPEAKER_00: Yes, and that was a great one.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: I really enjoyed learning about uh what people would do and all the weird things people would do with their pictures back when that was January of 2024, yeah.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: Dead ends are just a year old, but you know, I like them.
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: I I really like the mix of of the dead end.
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: If you're a fan of this show, please write us not at dirtnap city and let us know if you have dead end suggestions.
- 41:02SPEAKER_00: Let us know if you like the people or the dead ends better.
- 41:05SPEAKER_00: Just give us some feedback, we'd like to hear from you.
- 41:08SPEAKER_05: Well, I think um there's only a few dead ends that you haven't mentioned, which means there's some of the lower-rated episodes, but really they're they're meant to be little short little interstitials between episodes just to give ourselves a little break.
- 41:23SPEAKER_05: Um yeah, it's just waltzing down memory lane.
- 41:27SPEAKER_05: Um I I I would recommend if you you go back and listen to some of these stupid dead ends.
- 41:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for sure.
- 41:34SPEAKER_00: And I'd take the word stupid out of that if I was you.
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: Um the ones you do are stupid.
- 41:41SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: Listen to Alex's dead ends, they're much better.
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: Uh Neil Armstrong.
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: Uh that that that one's about uh August of 2024.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: That one's doing pretty well.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: It's you know, somebody that did a big thing, one giant step, and he is definitely somebody to look up to.
- 41:59SPEAKER_05: 87 minutes it clocks in at.
- 42:02SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 42:02SPEAKER_05: Um that may be why it's not higher.
- 42:04SPEAKER_05: Um, I remember when I at uh when we uh when we stopped recording, Kelly said, I know it's long, but it's freaking Neil Armstrong.
- 42:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:18SPEAKER_05: And uh and a great outro um that we probably gotta strike for um the police walking on the moon.
- 42:25SPEAKER_05: Fantastic song if you don't know that one.
- 42:28SPEAKER_05: Sometimes you just gotta play the the hits, you know.
- 42:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: Now the the next one uh on the list of uh popularity, kind of you know, starting to get towards the top end, like the top 50%.
- 42:41SPEAKER_00: Dr.
- 42:41SPEAKER_00: Shoal.
- 42:42SPEAKER_00: Now there is a classic somebody that we've heard of but don't know much about.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, classic.
- 42:49SPEAKER_05: Um we learned about corns and bunions, we learned about foot odor.
- 42:53SPEAKER_05: Um yeah, but but not odor eaters, remember?
- 42:57SPEAKER_00: No, no, the different, different thing.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: Um, and and what's great about that is the next most popular one is a dead end about feet as well.
- 43:05SPEAKER_00: It's the X-ray shoe fitter.
- 43:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was that was in my feet era.
- 43:10SPEAKER_05: That was uh X-ray shoe fitter is a great one because it's not a dead end that we actually experienced.
- 43:17SPEAKER_05: That one, it's one that I don't even think you believed when I first told you about it.
- 43:21SPEAKER_00: My mom, my mom remembered him, she had seen them before.
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: That's how I learned about it was from my mom.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, shout out to the moms.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then uh starting off our I think it was our first episode for 2025, it's doing pretty well.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: Teddy Roosevelt, kind of the most season badass president we ever had.
- 43:41SPEAKER_05: Yep, 68 minutes.
- 43:44SPEAKER_05: Um, now the outro to that was interesting.
- 43:46SPEAKER_05: It was Teddy Roosevelt's speeches with kind of lounge music background.
- 43:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:52SPEAKER_00: That one that one was uh an actual speech by Teddy Roosevelt.
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: I put the music on it, yeah.
- 43:58SPEAKER_00: You put the music in, yeah, just to make It's a little more weird and interesting.
- 44:02SPEAKER_05: Kind of like hotel lounge, uh upscale hotel lounge with Teddy Roosevelt.
- 44:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, kind of a cool thing.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: Very modern sounding music with very old sounding recording.
- 44:14SPEAKER_00: Um before that, or or next on our popularity list from 2024, summer of 2024, we hooked up with Jarrett Barenstein.
- 44:23SPEAKER_00: Barenstein.
- 44:24SPEAKER_00: I forgot if it's Stein or Stein, but he is a comedian based in Los Angeles, I think.
- 44:30SPEAKER_00: And he uh he and Alex and I kind of talked about Andy Kaufman, all we knew about him.
- 44:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, our uh only episode where there's somebody other than well, other than the one we just heard.
- 44:44SPEAKER_05: Uh this episode has uh featuring your son.
- 44:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 44:48SPEAKER_05: Um that was uh 73 minutes of the three of us talking about Andy Kaufman and featured a shout out to one of our listeners.
- 44:57SPEAKER_05: Do you remember who the listener was?
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: Uh who no.
- 45:02SPEAKER_00: Pink Flox.
- 45:03SPEAKER_00: Pink Flox, that's right.
- 45:05SPEAKER_00: Pink, are you still there?
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: We haven't heard from Pink Flox in a while.
- 45:08SPEAKER_05: Hopefully, Pink, you're still with us.
- 45:11SPEAKER_05: But next next episode might be Pink Flox.
- 45:14SPEAKER_05: Hopefully, not.
- 45:15SPEAKER_00: We also want to know um what you thought about the dynamic of having a third person, like a guest on with us.
- 45:23SPEAKER_00: I've I've heard positive and negative about that from a few different people.
- 45:27SPEAKER_00: So um let us know.
- 45:28SPEAKER_00: Send us a note, not at dirtnapcity.com, N O T at dirtnapcity.com, and let us know what you think about having a guest.
- 45:35SPEAKER_00: And if you like it, maybe it could be you.
- 45:38SPEAKER_05: And Jarrett, if you're listening, it's nothing personal about you.
- 45:41SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah.
- 45:42SPEAKER_05: If you know it might be that they uh that you should uh host the show and and I should Jarrett's not listening.
- 45:50SPEAKER_05: But if you are, if you are you think that was a one and done with that was the only upper spot?
- 45:56SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 45:56SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 45:56SPEAKER_00: I should, I should, uh, I should reach out and just say hi.
- 45:59SPEAKER_00: I I thought he was great.
- 46:01SPEAKER_00: I thought Jarrett was pretty funny, not as funny as we thought a comedian would be, a little more politically charged, but he was he had good energy.
- 46:08SPEAKER_00: I enjoyed talking to him.
- 46:10SPEAKER_00: Now, speaking of good energy, um, you know, this guy was a real Casanova.
- 46:16SPEAKER_00: This was uh summer of 2024 as well, uh, for popularity.
- 46:22SPEAKER_00: And again, we're kind of we're definitely in the top half of our um of our episodes this much at this point, but Casanova, that's one that I definitely had heard of, but didn't know much about.
- 46:35SPEAKER_05: It was our first parental discretion notice uh yeah, yeah, that we'd ever had.
- 46:40SPEAKER_05: And the first use of the AI song.
- 46:43SPEAKER_05: Oh, Casanova was okay.
- 46:46SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 46:47SPEAKER_05: Well, um, I'll tell you what.
- 46:49SPEAKER_05: And we could have used the song.
- 46:50SPEAKER_05: We could have there's there's songs about Casanova.
- 46:53SPEAKER_05: Sure, sure.
- 46:54SPEAKER_05: But I think you had just found out about that uh AI app and you were real excited to use it.
- 46:59SPEAKER_05: So yes.
- 47:00SPEAKER_00: I I I think I feel like unless it's like a song that just really fits, like the like the Boney M or Walking on the Moon, or some of those, you know, like the flagpole sitta, we had to use that, right?
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: Um but unless it was just right up, you know, made for it, then I like using the AI songs.
- 47:19SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 47:19SPEAKER_00: Now uh you know be right free, by the way.
- 47:23SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 47:24SPEAKER_00: We get free and clear on those.
- 47:26SPEAKER_00: Part of what we want to do on this uh show is make friends and influence people.
- 47:33SPEAKER_00: And our buddy Dale Carnegie is uh great at that.
- 47:37SPEAKER_00: That was one from uh last summer as well.
- 47:40SPEAKER_00: I thought that was a really good episode.
- 47:42SPEAKER_00: I enjoyed Dale Carnegie.
- 47:44SPEAKER_05: This is the one that I always forget that I did when I'm sitting around thinking about new ones.
- 47:49SPEAKER_05: Uh I usually will think, you know who I should do is Dale Carnegie.
- 47:52SPEAKER_05: And I've done it, and then I sit down and I start to look at it, and I think, oh, I've already done this.
- 47:56SPEAKER_05: Done that a few times.
- 47:57SPEAKER_05: I've had a few false starts back with Dale Carnegie.
- 48:00SPEAKER_05: Um, also a great AI country outro to this one.
- 48:04SPEAKER_05: Right, right.
- 48:05SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, Dale Carnegie, I thought would be fun to talk about with you because um he had a lot of thoughts about you know uh influencing people and and um just how you how do you how you get through life and um networking and all the kind of stuff that that I think that uh you're interested in.
- 48:24SPEAKER_05: So that was fun to talk about with you.
- 48:27SPEAKER_00: So last season we wrapped up season three with uh Charles Dickens on December 19th, and that episode's doing pretty well, considering it's only about four months old.
- 48:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was one of those joint episodes where we both know who it's gonna be.
- 48:41SPEAKER_05: We both smoked the joint.
- 48:43SPEAKER_05: We we um we got a diversion though.
- 48:47SPEAKER_05: One thing that happened as a result of the Charles Dickens episode is that we mentioned Uriah Heap as a character, a Charles Dickens character, and then for the next like month, Kelly and I offline um texting back and forth, got really into uh Uriah Heap, the band, right for a few weeks.
- 49:08SPEAKER_00: Couple of good songs, yeah.
- 49:10SPEAKER_00: I had never never really listened to them.
- 49:12SPEAKER_00: So that was a that was an unexpected blessing from Charles Dickens.
- 49:16SPEAKER_00: God bless us, everyone.
- 49:19SPEAKER_00: So now, you know, kind of getting up into uh fewer of the dead ends, but there's still a few more that are pretty popular.
- 49:26SPEAKER_00: And this one, I'm kind of surprised how popular it is.
- 49:29SPEAKER_00: It's uh drinking fountains.
- 49:31SPEAKER_00: What were drinking fountains?
- 49:32SPEAKER_00: You don't really see the public much anymore.
- 49:35SPEAKER_05: Well, I see.
- 49:35SPEAKER_05: I don't know if I agree with that.
- 49:37SPEAKER_05: I mean, I see them everywhere I go.
- 49:39SPEAKER_05: Um, but you but you were calling them bubblers, I believe.
- 49:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:44SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, the bubblers were something that was kind of specific to uh certain city.
- 49:50SPEAKER_00: I don't recall if that was um where was the bubblers?
- 49:54SPEAKER_00: Go back and listen to the episode if you want to know where they called them bubblers.
- 49:57SPEAKER_00: But yeah, drinking fountains was a dead end that uh I thought was appropriate because most people now have water bottles or don't really use public drinking fountains because of germs.
- 50:10SPEAKER_00: I suppose.
- 50:11SPEAKER_00: And then there is one that I'm always like floored that it's not more popular.
- 50:16SPEAKER_00: It's kind of like I said, right here in the in the middle of the heap, towards the top half, but it's also a pretty old episode, and that's Mr.
- 50:23SPEAKER_00: Rogers.
- 50:24SPEAKER_00: And this is one where, you know, you said there's a few things I've revealed about myself to you on these shows about writing in the Goodyear Blimp, uh, writing in a Ferrari, uh, meeting Mr.
- 50:35SPEAKER_00: Rogers.
- 50:36SPEAKER_00: I got to meet Mr.
- 50:36SPEAKER_00: Rogers, and so I just wanted to pay tribute to the man.
- 50:40SPEAKER_05: And if you look on uh wherever you get your podcasts, the thumbnail picture for that episode is a picture of Kelly and Mr.
- 50:48SPEAKER_05: Rogers.
- 50:49SPEAKER_05: Kelly is a young man, yep, and Mr.
- 50:51SPEAKER_00: Rogers on the piano.
- 50:54SPEAKER_00: Now, the next one is Johnny Appleseed.
- 50:58SPEAKER_00: And it's kind of funny that Mr.
- 51:00SPEAKER_00: Rogers and Johnny Appleseed are right in the same uh kind of area as far as popularity goes.
- 51:06SPEAKER_00: Now, Johnny Appleseed's only been out 11 rooms.
- 51:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they could be roommates in Dirt Knapp City, wouldn't you think?
- 51:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 51:13SPEAKER_00: I think they'd I think they'd hang out in a in a brotherly kind of way, just like you and me.
- 51:19SPEAKER_00: Um Johnny Applesed's been out less than a year.
- 51:22SPEAKER_00: It was last May.
- 51:23SPEAKER_00: We're coming up on the one-year anniversary, whereas Mr.
- 51:25SPEAKER_00: Rogers is more than two years old.
- 51:29SPEAKER_00: Um, but Johnny Appleseed is uh interesting one because I think that is something a lot of people have heard of but don't necessarily know much about.
- 51:37SPEAKER_00: And great outro by uh Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros.
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: That was a song that just had to be played that fit.
- 51:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 51:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but that's a good episode, Johnny Appleseed.
- 51:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, solid one.
- 51:49SPEAKER_00: So this one was one of our first episodes, The Pilgrims.
- 51:53SPEAKER_00: This is one where Alex broke the rules for the first time.
- 51:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it was the first one that I'd done more than one person.
- 52:01SPEAKER_05: I'm not sure how I came across in that episode.
- 52:03SPEAKER_05: I mean, um, I know these days it's not fashionable to say you came over on the Mayflower, you know.
- 52:10SPEAKER_05: Um, but that's my story, you know, that's my origin story.
- 52:13SPEAKER_05: And um, that I'm related to the boy who fell off the Mayflower, who wasn't really a boy.
- 52:18SPEAKER_05: I think he was 28 years old.
- 52:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:20SPEAKER_05: Um, fell off the Mayflower.
- 52:22SPEAKER_05: Uh fun to talk about that.
- 52:24SPEAKER_05: I think if you haven't listened to the Mayflower episode, the Pilgrims episode, um, you're missing the full picture.
- 52:31SPEAKER_05: That's my that's my origin story.
- 52:32SPEAKER_00: Save it for November.
- 52:34SPEAKER_00: You you can you can listen to it.
- 52:35SPEAKER_00: We see a spike every November.
- 52:37SPEAKER_00: That's that's uh that's what we're hoping for.
- 52:39SPEAKER_00: Uh but speaking of um speaking of spikes, our second most popular dead end that we've done so far, and we've only been doing them for a little over a year, um, was riding in the back of a pickup truck.
- 52:53SPEAKER_00: Like people like that one.
- 52:55SPEAKER_05: I don't know why, but that seems so now I know what the most popular dead end is then.
- 53:01SPEAKER_00: Interesting, interesting, yeah, yeah.
- 53:04SPEAKER_00: Um so as we go through, um there were Siskel and Ebert, another one where Alex broke the mold and did two people, but I kind of get why, you know, like the Wright brothers, they just you can't have one without the other, at least in popular culture.
- 53:21SPEAKER_05: And unfortunately, they both died.
- 53:23SPEAKER_05: So um the my favorite part about that episode was the audio drop of them bickering, right?
- 53:29SPEAKER_05: And one of them calling the other an asshole.
- 53:31SPEAKER_05: Uh I I think it's very, very good.
- 53:34SPEAKER_00: I wish he had called him Nostra Dumbass.
- 53:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, the next one?
- 53:38SPEAKER_00: That's next in the list.
- 53:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Nostradamus.
- 53:40SPEAKER_00: Uh Nostradamus This was a live one.
- 53:43SPEAKER_00: Yep, we did this in the studio, and and I enjoyed I enjoyed those sessions, actually.
- 53:47SPEAKER_00: That I think we did Einstein that that day too.
- 53:51SPEAKER_05: Also, did you know that that was the first episode where we went f at the beginning we said interesting the show about interesting people who happen to be dead, and then that's the first episode where we called we said interesting dead people.
- 54:07SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 54:09SPEAKER_00: A lot more streamlined.
- 54:10SPEAKER_00: I like that better than happen to be dead.
- 54:17SPEAKER_00: Um let's see here.
- 54:20SPEAKER_00: I'm getting another call, but I'm not gonna answer this one.
- 54:23SPEAKER_00: So here's the surprise.
- 54:25SPEAKER_00: Matahari is killing it.
- 54:27SPEAKER_00: Matahari is like getting way up in the stats, is doing great.
- 54:31SPEAKER_00: A lot of people seem to like uh that episode and have downloaded it, and that's right there with the ones that I don't know much about, but um, but have heard of.
- 54:43SPEAKER_00: And I learned a lot.
- 54:43SPEAKER_00: I enjoyed that.
- 54:45SPEAKER_05: March of 2025.
- 54:47SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 54:47SPEAKER_05: I got to talk about Mata Harry, the um the Lancelot Link character.
- 54:52SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 54:52SPEAKER_05: Um, which we introduced the concept of somebody having severe looks.
- 54:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's been a real people seem to people seem to really grasp onto the idea of somebody having severe looks.
- 55:03SPEAKER_05: I've had people uh talk to me about that.
- 55:06SPEAKER_05: Um, and a great nickelback outro, not really Nickelback, but our uh fake Nickelback group uh about Matahari.
- 55:14SPEAKER_00: Yep, yep.
- 55:15SPEAKER_00: If you haven't heard that one, but you probably have because it's pretty popular.
- 55:18SPEAKER_00: Um, there's another one that is a little bit older, but is also doing pretty well in the popularity, is uh the gentleman pirate.
- 55:27SPEAKER_00: Now uh the gentleman pirate.
- 55:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm trying to think of his real name now.
- 55:31SPEAKER_00: Steed Bonnet.
- 55:32SPEAKER_00: Yes, Steed Bonnet.
- 55:34SPEAKER_00: By the way, I don't know.
- 55:35SPEAKER_00: I think I think we must have talked about this, but there is an HBO show called our Our Flag Means Death, and it's about the Gentleman Pirate, and it's absurdist humor.
- 55:46SPEAKER_00: I watched the first season of it.
- 55:47SPEAKER_00: I enjoyed it, it had some moments, uh, it got a little tiresome after a while, but um, but but pretty funny if you if you like really absurd humor, like like Flight of the Concords kind of humor.
- 55:58SPEAKER_05: I'm surprised that that episode's doing as well as it did, because I don't think Steed Bonnet is a household name, not like Blackbeard.
- 56:08SPEAKER_00: No, but gentleman pirate is intriguing, right?
- 56:11SPEAKER_00: It's like you think of pirates as scoundrels and scallywags, and you know, they're gonna kill you and cut your your leg off and have their parrot poop on you.
- 56:20SPEAKER_00: They're gonna do all those things, but this guy was a gentleman, he didn't do that sort of thing.
- 56:24SPEAKER_00: And that's right in your wheelhouse.
- 56:25SPEAKER_05: You love the you love if I've learned anything, I've learned you love inventors and you love explorers, and he was an explorer, but uh not great at it.
- 56:38SPEAKER_05: Flawed explorer, flawed explorer, that's what makes him kind of interesting.
- 56:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 56:42SPEAKER_05: Um he was like a pirate wannabe, right?
- 56:46SPEAKER_00: Pirate wannabe.
- 56:48SPEAKER_00: I'm a pirate wannabe.
- 56:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think you are.
- 56:52SPEAKER_00: If we jump into uh the next most popular episode, it is part two of our two-part series is Rock and Roll Dead.
- 57:00SPEAKER_00: Now, this this happened after we visited the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and we really spent some time thinking about this.
- 57:06SPEAKER_00: You know, is is rock as we knew it as when we were younger still around.
- 57:11SPEAKER_00: Um, I tried to get Rick Biotto to join this uh show, he was busy.
- 57:16SPEAKER_00: I I tried to get uh Dick Clark, but he was dead.
- 57:19SPEAKER_00: Um, and so you know it was really just Alex and I talking about rock and roll.
- 57:24SPEAKER_00: Part two, um, I think a lot of people part one was more popular, but I think part two is where we got really deep with it, like got into the real nitty-gritty.
- 57:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and the fun part about the rock and roll episodes is we play a lot of music, yeah.
- 57:39SPEAKER_05: Um, in it, a lot of the short segment parts of music.
- 57:43SPEAKER_05: Um, we really just started talking and talking.
- 57:45SPEAKER_05: We had to chop it into two parts because we talked for like two and a half hours or something.
- 57:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 57:51SPEAKER_05: Um, but um that part two is 73 minutes.
- 57:55SPEAKER_05: It ends with the uh golden shower of hits, right?
- 57:58SPEAKER_05: Right from Circle Jerks, which is a song that Kelly and I used to listen to in college.
- 58:04SPEAKER_05: Um, brought back a lot of good memories.
- 58:06SPEAKER_05: I when people ask me are my favorite ones that we've done.
- 58:10SPEAKER_05: This is definitely the rock and roll ones are definitely on my list.
- 58:13SPEAKER_05: It was the most fun to do, I think.
- 58:15SPEAKER_00: Nice, yeah, yeah.
- 58:16SPEAKER_00: Very and and going to the rock and roll hall of fame, if you're into that, was I was pleasantly surprised at how cool that place was and enjoyed enjoyed the trip with you and and uh Al from Austin.
- 58:29SPEAKER_00: Um the next one up, uh kind of a surprise.
- 58:32SPEAKER_00: I think you were very surprised when I started talking about Satchel Page, because I'm not normally a sports guy, but my mom wanted me to do Satchel Page.
- 58:40SPEAKER_00: She she really like I think thinks he thinks a lot of him and thought he would be interesting, and he was very interesting.
- 58:48SPEAKER_00: The names of his throws, you know, the troubler and the the slipping on in, or whatever they were called.
- 58:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, he had some interesting pitches and had names for all of them.
- 58:59SPEAKER_05: And I were you shocked sucker.
- 59:02SPEAKER_05: Were you shocked when I said Satchel Page?
- 59:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, a little jealous too, because I usually stay away from the sports ones, but um I I I am a sucker for uh stories about the Negro Leagues um because most of them can't be verified, so a lot of them are embellished.
- 59:20SPEAKER_05: Um but they're modern too, so it's it's not like you're hearing tales from a long time ago.
- 59:26SPEAKER_05: But I love the story about how he called his outfielders in and had them sit in the infield because he's so confident.
- 59:33SPEAKER_00: Right, and through a strike out, yeah, through strikes, yeah.
- 59:37SPEAKER_00: Uh well, another guy with a lot of confidence and uh you know probably uh bigger than life personality was Merv Griffin.
- 59:46SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 59:47SPEAKER_05: Uh do you remember the song that Merv Griffin uh sang that that ended this episode?
- 59:53SPEAKER_05: Was it like his big hit?
- 59:55SPEAKER_05: I don't.
- 59:55SPEAKER_05: What was it?
- 59:56SPEAKER_05: It was called I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts.
- 59:59SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's right.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_00: I remember it now.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, put them on the map, I think.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_00: Another one that's worth it just for the song.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_00: Now, yeah, Julia Child, uh definitely a pioneering woman, didn't become famous until she was in her 50s, and uh very distinctive voice, very distinctive everything, really.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_00: Uh, I enjoyed that one.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_00: I I thought Julia Child was somebody that um I didn't know much about until I did some research, and I hope people kind of saw her in a new light.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_05: And you started the episode by trying a hello in her voice.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_05: Oh, yes, yeah, cracked it a little bit.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_05: I can't even do it right now.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_00: Um that was from November of 2023.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, over a year ago.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_00: Um, one of the saints, Saint Valentine.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_00: This made might have been our first saint.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_00: Was St.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_05: Valentine our first saint or was Saint um yes, it was, and it was a joint episode where we both knew what that we were doing it.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_00: It is interesting on these saints, and especially ones that are associated with holidays, to see a little bit of a spike as the holiday rolls around, you know, to see the stats go up.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_00: Um all right.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_00: So after um, after we talked a little bit about, well, again, these aren't in order, these are in order of pop popularity.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_00: We just recently gave a shout out to Chef Boy RD during the Enzo Ferrari episode.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_00: Uh, those two, I think if you listen to one, you have to listen to the other.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_00: If you're gonna learn about Chef Boy RD, you need to learn about Ferrari and vice versa.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_00: They're both Italian.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_00: And who was it that would say that's Italian?
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_00: Was that a Chef Boy RD thing?
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_00: Or maybe it was uh Ragu spaghetti sauce.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_00: Um, and speaking of Ragu spaghetti sauce, uh Betsy Ross, she actually didn't sew the American flag.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_00: But but here's here's what was cool about the Betsy Ross episode.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_00: We recorded that months before we published it.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_00: This was our first one where we got strategic during season two and said, Hey, hey, we've got this.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_00: We should sit on this until July 4th or thereabouts.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_00: So we published it.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_00: We've got it for months.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we published it at in the end of June, so that on July 4th, everybody would be Googling Betsy Ross, and boom, up she came, and that she's been popular ever since.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_00: And she's a fraud.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_00: And she's a fraud.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_00: But someone who wasn't a fraud, but also another very powerful and interesting woman, Eleanor Roosevelt.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_00: You know, we kind of the Roosevelts have have ducked in and out of Dirtnap City, the show hundreds of times at this point, right?
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_05: All the Roosevelts.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_00: They all seem to be connected to other people in this show.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_00: If if uh if it weren't for the Roosevelts, there wouldn't be a Dirt Knap City, I don't think.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_00: Now, one of our most recent um uh citizens, people to move to Dirt Knap City, moved there in 2023, I think.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_00: Jerry Springer.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_05: I think that is the most recent one that we had have done.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_05: Um it was the first episode that we ever ended with a a song.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_05: Um prior to that, it was just our bumper music.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_05: That was July 2023.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_05: And the song that you used was Jerry Springer himself singing a country ditty.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_00: For those of you that didn't know, Jerry Springer did release an album uh in the style of, say, William Shatner.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_00: Uh, well worth a listen, that episode.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_00: Um, if you want to get away or get scared, like either escape or be scared, you'll want to check out our Halloween special in 2022 with Harry Houdini.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_00: Now he had some scary stuff going on.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_05: 2022.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_05: My favorite line from that was you said that he was blurring the lines right way before Robin Thick.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_00: Yes, that was that was clever.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_00: Uh, Benjamin Franklin from uh July 4th.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_00: Again, another one that we put out on July 4th to uh get the Patriots involved.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_00: Ben Franklin was so much more than just the guy with the kite and the key.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I learned a lot about him.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_00: I learned that uh I think his father was a chandler, which was somebody who uh uses uh wax, makes wax out of um uh rendered lard.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_05: But more importantly, he wrote an essay on flatulence.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_00: He did.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_00: He was a comedian.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_00: That guy was funny.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_00: Um we've we've tried, you know, I don't know that we've always done a great job, but we have tried to be a little bit diverse on the show, not always just have old white guys.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_00: You know, we want to have some diversity, and and so uh hopefully we can do keep doing a good job of that or do an even better job of that in the future.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_00: I do remember thinking to myself when we did this one that she is truly one of the greatest people on here, and certainly of the women that we've done, I think probably the most interesting, and that was Amelia Earhart.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_05: The um and uh it was a great episode and a great outro by the country gentleman of the city.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_00: A little that was another that was another little uh bluegrass ditty, right?
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_00: But a real one, not an AI, yeah.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, real one.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_00: Um, well, they're all real in their own way.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_00: But speaking of something that wasn't real, there were these guys that created these cartoons called Hanna Barbera, and uh that was that was an interesting one.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_00: I didn't know anything about those guys other than their the work they had done, and I knew the name.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_05: Bill and Joe, yeah, that was our season three premiere, jumped right into it in January of twenty twenty four.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_00: Now the next one on the list in terms of popularity, and we're getting up there.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_00: These are these are the ones that are getting billions of views, billions with a B, um, billions of downloads.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_00: Um, and we're still Full not full-time podcasters yet.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_00: What's up with that?
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_00: We need some sponsors.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_00: Uh, most popular dead end we've done to date is only two months old.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's been on a rocket ride.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_00: It's Vinegar Valentines.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_00: Unbelievable.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_05: So much more popular than the other dead ends.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_05: Uh, I had never heard of Vinegar Valentines prior to this.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_05: I think you might have made it up, but that's okay.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_05: We got downloads out of it.
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh, no, I didn't make it up.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_00: I wish I could say I did, but they were Valentines that insulted you.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_00: And if you wanna, you know, if if if you hate Valentine's Day as much as I do, you should definitely listen to that episode.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_00: It's it's a definite uh irreverent look at Valentine's Day and all the stupidness that goes on around it.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_00: Um if you're gonna jump off a cliff, what are you gonna yell, Alex?
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_00: Geronimo.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_05: Our season two premiere.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_05: Um, and where you uh you said we were gonna jump right into it, literally.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_05: And I guessed Eddie Van Halen.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_00: Oh, you did.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_00: I've guessed him a few times.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, someday, someday.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_00: Um so we've got uh one next that I definitely had never heard of, but was glad to learn about, and that's another sports person, Babe Dietrichson Zaharias, um, from October of 2020.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think this might be one of your favorites, right?
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_00: This is I like this episode a lot, yeah.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and ends with the great song by Babe herself.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_00: That's right, that's right.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_00: She and another woman, I think, did a little duet, uh, or harmonica, maybe one of them played the harmonica and one sang, as I recall.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_00: We did have a short um in there that was more of a primer or a um promo for another podcast called It's My Screen Time 2 that we did.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_00: Uh actually, that was our first collab, the screen time one.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_00: But we that wasn't on our show, that was on theirs.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_00: Uh who was Willy Wonka?
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_00: Now, Willy Wonka, fictional character, but uh it was kind of fun.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_00: Um, we all went to see the Wonka movie and then we uh talked about it on their podcast.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_00: Uh it's my screen time too.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_00: If it that podcast is still going on, you should check it out and see listen to the episode where Alex and I talk about Willy Wonka.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_00: Great times.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_00: Now, P.T.
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_00: Barnum was one of those people that I only knew from the circus, and that was kind of the main crux of him.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_00: But Alex educated me about a lot of other things on P.T.
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_00: Barnum, and I think you should check it out if you want to know more.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and we talked about some of his um his cast of characters too, like Tom Thumb and Grizzly Adams, and yeah, the real Grizzly Adams.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was fun.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_00: Pete Barnum.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_00: That was that was you can't go wrong with circus people.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_00: Uh, I think it might have been the first uh no, maybe the second or third Saint that we did, but actually a real Saint, and that was uh Mother Teresa.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_00: We did that for the Mother's Day special.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_00: We're coming up on Mother's Day again here pretty soon.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_00: I'm expecting to see a big spike in downloads of the Mother Teresa episode.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_05: Also had a big discussion on blue bonnets on that episode.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_05: I don't know if we're gonna.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_00: They're not great this year.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_00: I'll say they were much better last year, in my opinion.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_05: Well, this was uh two years ago.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_05: This was Mother Teresa was two years ago.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's right.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_00: Uh now here's an episode that we refer back to pretty often these days for some reason, uh, whether it's talking about pigeons or whether it's talking about musky stuff, it's Nikola Tesla.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_05: Uh that was a tough one to to play in because I'm not I didn't really want to get into the science of it all, but once I find out how crazy he was with the pigeons and the death ray and the yearly press conferences on his birthday, um, he ended up being my kind of guy that uh that I you know that I write in my wheelhouse.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_00: Crazy and electric.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_00: Um well, speaking of crazy and electric, Ray Croc, a man who didn't found McDonald's but grew it to what it is today.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_00: Really interesting story about him.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_00: Definitely worth a listen if you want to know anything about business and fast food in America.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_05: And has a great review of McDonald's by uh by my daughter by by Kelly's daughter when she was like um five years old or something.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_00: Yep, second grade, second grade.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_00: McDisgusting.
- 1:10:35SPEAKER_00: Um the next one in terms of popularity is uh about a year old and it's uh Bob Marley.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_00: I definitely enjoyed doing a little research and learning more.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_00: I finally saw the biopic about Bob Marley.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_00: Uh really enjoyed that as well.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_00: But just kind of a truly a legend, and someone that um while uh we didn't get too much into his music, more about his life.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_00: It's too bad that he he died as young as he did, because I think he'd still be doing great things.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_05: And I think the episode came out around the same time as the movie, too.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_05: But you've seen it.
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_00: Uh Evil Knievel is the next most popular, and evil that's one we talk about all the time.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_00: For sure, for sure.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_00: Uh, we learned about Awful Canawal.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_00: This was season one, these were the early days.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_05: That was one of the first episodes.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_05: That was uh episode four.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_05: November of yeah, November of 2022.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_05: But a great one.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_05: A great one.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_00: Agreed.
- 1:11:35SPEAKER_00: Um, Howard Hughes, somebody that flew things and was kind of crazy.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_00: You talk about cra crazy as a reoccurring factor here, but um, that was our uh season three, February episode.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_00: I I definitely enjoyed researching Howard Hughes, read a book about him, and learned a lot of things, and still very much in awe of the uh Spruce Goose.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_00: If you ever get a chance to see that airplane, it is pretty amazing.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_05: That was a 76-minute episode, and 68 minutes in, you said I could go on another hour about this guy.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, true.
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_00: Uh, and same thing with Thomas Edison.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, another guy that you could talk about for a long time and and not run out of stuff to say.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_00: Inventor, uh, American pioneer, businessman.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_00: Um Wizard of Menlo Park.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_00: And another uh guy that was also kind of a businessman, different kind of business, Al Capone.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_00: That was from last December, and that one's tracking pretty well in a short period of time.
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_00: Saint Nicholas, uh, one of our saints.
- 1:12:40SPEAKER_00: And I loved the beginning of that one.
- 1:12:42SPEAKER_00: I loved how it started with this kind of spooky story.
- 1:12:44SPEAKER_00: If you haven't heard that one, uh it might have been a better Halloween special than Christmas special, but it it starts off kind of spooky and then goes from there.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_00: And we talked a lot about the Yule lads.
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_00: The Yule lads, yeah.
- 1:12:57SPEAKER_00: If you don't know who the Yule lads are, you'll want to listen to the St.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_00: Nicholas episode to learn because they're they're a lot of fun.
- 1:13:03SPEAKER_00: We got some mileage out of those this past Christmas with texts and pictures.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_00: Um, somebody that uh we did about a year ago, almost exactly a year ago, Napoleon Bonaparte, and um ended that one with a song by um Phoenix called Napoleon Says.
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_00: I love that song.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_00: Great song.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, great song, great band.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_05: I really like them.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_00: I do too.
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_00: Uh, Dr.
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_00: Spock.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_00: That was one about rearing children.
- 1:13:29SPEAKER_00: Not not Mr.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_00: Spock from Star Trek, but Dr.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_00: Spock, the uh guy who tells you how to raise children.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_00: If you got kids, you're gonna want to hear that episode.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_00: Another Saint, St.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_00: Patrick.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_00: Uh that's another one that we kind of put around a uh holiday.
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_00: We put it out in mid-March, and it's done really well and and lots of interesting stuff.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, St.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_00: Patrick, I think, has all kinds of tall tales and legends about him, but you and I really kind of dug in and figured out the nitty-gritty of it, who he really was.
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_00: And a great song to end it, the uh It's a Great Day for the Irish.
- 1:14:08SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes, that's right.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_00: Uh uh a classic old song, uh, you know, kind of an oldie but goody.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_00: Now, one that we did in season two that I probably was one of the first most epic long ones that I ever did, but I think a lot of people enjoyed was Ernest Shackleton.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_00: This episode has has been in the top, you know, 25% of our downloads for a long time.
- 1:14:31SPEAKER_00: Because, man, that guy, uh going to Antarctica, going to the Arctic, um, exploring, they don't make them like that anymore.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_00: Talked about the Nimrod?
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's the name of a ship.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_00: And I think Nimrod is also a hunter.
- 1:14:47SPEAKER_00: And Miss Chippy.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_00: Remember, Chippy the cat, yeah, who was a male cat, but they called her Miss Chippy.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_00: Called him Miss Chippy.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I and you know, that's before people used pronouns, uh, you know, had the pronouns in her signature, so they weren't sure with Miss Chippy.
- 1:15:01SPEAKER_00: Um, Rock and Roll Dead Part One is up here, so it's quite a bit more popular than the is Rock and Roll Dead Part Two.
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_00: And I think that's because uh it's part one.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_00: You know, a lot of people listen to part one, but not part two.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_05: Not to be confused with the Gary Glitter song, Rock and Roll Part One.
- 1:15:19SPEAKER_05: Hmm, yeah, yeah, that's a good one.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:23SPEAKER_05: And and a reminder, if you've uh if you like the Rock and Roll episode, there's a Spotify playlist with every song that we talk about.
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_00: Hmm, yes, there is.
- 1:15:32SPEAKER_00: Yes, there is.
- 1:15:32SPEAKER_00: You can find it in the description of that episode.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_00: Um, if you want to know about uh wealthy dudes, you know, this was like the OG of wealthy dudes, or one of the OGs, at least in America.
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_00: John D.
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_00: Rockefeller is our next one.
- 1:15:47SPEAKER_00: That was from 2023, and uh really interesting character.
- 1:15:51SPEAKER_00: A lot of stuff going on with that guy.
- 1:15:53SPEAKER_05: He said he aged backwards.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_05: Uh we talked a little bit about his um whether or not his um Nelson Rockefeller got eaten by uh cannibals, also remember.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_00: And and he used to hand out nickels and dimes to kids.
- 1:16:07SPEAKER_00: And and was a little bit uh was a little bit handsy with the ladies at times after his wife died, apparently.
- 1:16:13SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:16:13SPEAKER_00: I guess when you get old, that's what you do.
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_00: I think that's what we said then.
- 1:16:18SPEAKER_00: So now we're on to um the you know, this is the top one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
- 1:16:28SPEAKER_00: Top ten episodes in terms of popularity.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_00: A couple of these are some oldies but goodies that have been around for a while, so they've had some time to uh to baste in the goodness of dirt nap city and be downloaded a lot.
- 1:16:41SPEAKER_00: Our second episode, Colonel Sanders, is killing it.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_00: Great episode.
- 1:16:47SPEAKER_05: I really like that episode.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_05: It was the first one that I had ever done that was my um my creation.
- 1:16:54SPEAKER_05: Uh but I think I yeah, my creation.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_05: I think I established early on what my lane was gonna be, and Colonel Sanders is right in the middle of that lane.
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and the the wallpaper or the uh the gravy tastes like wallpaper paste.
- 1:17:07SPEAKER_00: That's that's my takeaway from that episode.
- 1:17:09SPEAKER_00: Great stuff.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_00: Um, and now here's one that just came out of nowhere, literally um two months old, is already numbered nine out of our top 100, and that's the flying Walendas.
- 1:17:23SPEAKER_00: And I I would have never guessed that this episode would be so popular, only because well, no, no, I I I think it's great.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_00: I didn't even I barely heard of them.
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_00: There, there's somebody that was like, I know the flying somebody or another's, but maybe that's what works.
- 1:17:39SPEAKER_00: Maybe, maybe because they were uh a little more obscure, people actually wanted to learn, or maybe just the the adjective flying, you know, in there that kind of describes what they do.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_00: That one's that one is our most popular, most recent um episode.
- 1:17:56SPEAKER_00: But hey, aren't they interesting dead people?
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_00: 100%.
- 1:17:59SPEAKER_00: And they're not all dead, actually.
- 1:18:01SPEAKER_00: Some of them, some of them are still alive, but they're all on they're all on borrowed time.
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_00: They're they're playing with playing with fire.
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_00: Uh Jim Henson, who really deserves to be in the top 10, number eight.
- 1:18:13SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, if you like, if you like uh the Muppets and you like Sesame Street, you can thank Jim Henson.
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_05: That was the first episode where I said, hello, everybody.
- 1:18:24SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:18:25SPEAKER_00: Well, I I you're you're pulling out some facts I didn't even know, so that's great.
- 1:18:30SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, that's kind of become your uh introduct, your signature introductory thing.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_00: I guess if we ever were to do this live, that's how we would have to start the show.
- 1:18:39SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_00: T-shirts, the whole thing.
- 1:18:44SPEAKER_00: Dr.
- 1:18:45SPEAKER_00: Seuss is number seven.
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_05: This is great.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_05: We had uh I had the poem.
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_05: Um, this was the first one that we had done a joint episode on.
- 1:18:56SPEAKER_05: We trashed Petey Eastman a little bit.
- 1:18:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we did.
- 1:18:58SPEAKER_05: Um Go Dog.
- 1:19:00SPEAKER_05: But um, but um this was the end of the season one.
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_05: It was a big finale, season one finale.
- 1:19:07SPEAKER_05: Um, it's one of my favorites as well.
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_00: There's only nine episodes in season one because we started in October and we decided that our our fiscal calendar would follow the um follow the regular calendar.
- 1:19:19SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_00: Our accountants made that decision.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:23SPEAKER_00: Has to do with uh has to do with our donations and taxes and all that stuff.
- 1:19:27SPEAKER_00: Um, so one of my favorite episodes that we recorded live and I think is just really funny but also really informative was Albert Einstein from season two.
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we did that.
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_05: We you're right, we did that in in person.
- 1:19:42SPEAKER_05: Um you tried a hello everybody, but uh I think abandon it.
- 1:19:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:48SPEAKER_00: I I that's not my thing.
- 1:19:49SPEAKER_00: My thing is uh just biting sarcasm all the time.
- 1:19:54SPEAKER_00: Uh number five is Andre the Giant, episode one, season one, episode one.
- 1:20:05SPEAKER_05: No music, at no intro music, no outro music, just a little different.
- 1:20:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we were still finding our way there.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_05: But a great episode.
- 1:20:15SPEAKER_05: Uh, I was a little embarrassed that I didn't you said, you know, just name a wrestler.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_05: And I I think I said junk your dog.
- 1:20:24SPEAKER_00: Uh and I I think I said name a wrestler, not a wrestler.
- 1:20:27unknown: Yeah.
- 1:20:28SPEAKER_05: But I I, you know, that uh established uh very early that I don't know uh everything.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_00: Rastling.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_05: That's for sure.
- 1:20:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:20:36SPEAKER_00: So season two, um we released this one, and this is I think the only one where we both uh had the same idea.
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_00: Is that right?
- 1:20:45SPEAKER_00: Was it Walt Disney that we both or was it a different one?
- 1:20:51SPEAKER_00: Walt Disney, did we coincidentally have the same idea?
- 1:20:55SPEAKER_00: We did on there was one episode where that happened, and I thought it was Walt Disney.
- 1:20:59SPEAKER_00: I thought that was Dr.
- 1:21:00SPEAKER_00: Seuss.
- 1:21:00SPEAKER_00: Oh, you're right, it was Dr.
- 1:21:02SPEAKER_00: Seuss.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_00: You're right.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_05: Um Disney, the one I remember is that we talked about Banksy and Dismal Land.
- 1:21:09SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes, the performance art.
- 1:21:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_00: So another one that's not too old, it's it's uh from August of 2023, but is um kind of doing real well in the stats at number three is Howard Cosell.
- 1:21:24SPEAKER_00: Who knew?
- 1:21:25SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:26SPEAKER_05: There's another one that you didn't know a lot about.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_05: We used a lot of audio drops in that one.
- 1:21:31SPEAKER_00: We did, we did.
- 1:21:32SPEAKER_00: And and you know, he he was uh not only uh not only sports caster, but he also was uh and and kind of tied into the John Lennon episode because he's the one that broke into the football game to tell it tell the world that John Lennon had been shot.
- 1:21:50SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 1:21:52SPEAKER_00: Uh and then one that just continues to just surprise the heck out of me because I didn't like this episode.
- 1:21:58SPEAKER_00: I didn't, I just just it just is not one of my favorites if I'm being honest.
- 1:22:03SPEAKER_00: Um, but it's number two, so it's probably good.
- 1:22:07SPEAKER_00: Um maybe I'll listen to it someday.
- 1:22:09SPEAKER_00: Joseph Pilates.
- 1:22:11SPEAKER_05: Well, you know, Kelly, you weren't the only one that didn't like it.
- 1:22:14SPEAKER_05: We got a one-star review from JML 2014.
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_05: It said, I've only listened to one episode, so I can't speak for the entire show.
- 1:22:24SPEAKER_05: So I'll just speak on this one episode.
- 1:22:26SPEAKER_05: This type episode titled Who is Joseph Pilates has tons of missing or wrong information.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_05: Why hold an episode on a topic you know so little about?
- 1:22:37SPEAKER_05: So, you know, I'm I'm a bit of an internet sleuth, and uh I wanted to see if JML 2014 had opined on anything else out there.
- 1:22:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:22:48SPEAKER_05: So there's two JML 2014s that I could find.
- 1:22:51SPEAKER_05: One was a guy who was like maybe in high school or eighth grade and hadn't really tweeted anything out since 2014, uh, a fella.
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_05: Um probably not him.
- 1:23:06SPEAKER_05: He mostly talks about rodeo and his girlfriend.
- 1:23:09SPEAKER_00: Fair.
- 1:23:10SPEAKER_05: But there was a woman who has the same JML 2014 who the only thing she's ever talked about besides our episode on Joseph Pilates was she uh talked about how she has a cracked nest doorbell.
- 1:23:28SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 1:23:29SPEAKER_05: So there were two things that motivated her to get a username and get out there and piss off.
- 1:23:36SPEAKER_05: You think it was cracked doorbell and our episode on Joseph Pilates.
- 1:23:41SPEAKER_00: Wow, wow, wow.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_00: Haters gonna hate.
- 1:23:44SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, well, I kind of agree with her.
- 1:23:47SPEAKER_00: It was a terrible episode.
- 1:23:48SPEAKER_00: Don't listen to it.
- 1:23:50SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh.
- 1:23:50SPEAKER_00: Stop listening to it.
- 1:23:51SPEAKER_00: No, I'm kidding.
- 1:23:52SPEAKER_00: I loved it.
- 1:23:53SPEAKER_00: I'm kidding.
- 1:23:54SPEAKER_00: Well, I guess maybe I'm just wanting to defend uh my position at the top for having the top episode a number one drum roll, please.
- 1:24:03SPEAKER_00: I'm Henry the Eighth, I am Henry the Eighth, I am, I am.
- 1:24:10SPEAKER_00: I got married to the widow next door.
- 1:24:13SPEAKER_00: She's been married seven times before, and everyone was an Annerie, cause she wouldn't have a Willie or a Sam.
- 1:24:24SPEAKER_00: Everyone was an Henry.
- 1:24:27SPEAKER_00: Henry the eighth, I am.
- 1:24:29SPEAKER_00: Number one.
- 1:24:30SPEAKER_00: You think that has to do with uh about that?
- 1:24:32SPEAKER_00: You think that has to do with the um uh musical six?
- 1:24:37SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_05: We talked a lot about the musical six in that.
- 1:24:41SPEAKER_05: Um and it was yeah, great episode.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_05: Uh really got into the royalty of it all, got into um a lot of the nuts and bolts, just a very interesting dead person.
- 1:24:53SPEAKER_05: Um I don't know why it's number one, but I'm okay with that.
- 1:24:57SPEAKER_05: So let me give you a little treat here while we're coming up to the end here.
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_05: Please.
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_05: Um some of these episodes have transcripts.
- 1:25:08SPEAKER_05: Some don't, some do.
- 1:25:10SPEAKER_05: I put the transcript to this episode because I figured it was number one.
- 1:25:15SPEAKER_05: I put it into our old buddy ChatGPT.
- 1:25:19SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:25:19SPEAKER_05: And I asked it to uh kind of you know talk about DirtNap City and what it thought as this kind of one our our most popular episode, and asked it to give me some notes on it.
- 1:25:32SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:25:32SPEAKER_05: Okay, yeah.
- 1:25:34SPEAKER_05: And it says, I'll just give you some highlights of what ChatGPT says.
- 1:25:38SPEAKER_05: And maybe this is you know, speaking for everyone, this is maybe a good way to wrap it up.
- 1:25:43SPEAKER_05: It says that based on the transcript, Alex comes across as the voice of the audience, skeptical, grounded, and quick with humor, and said, Alex is the rye, Rye W R Y, the Rye realist, sarcastic, casual, and inquisitive.
- 1:26:01SPEAKER_05: He's the guy who listens to history, raises an eyebrow, and says, Wait, what?
- 1:26:08SPEAKER_05: Wow, that's uh it says fairly accurate.
- 1:26:12SPEAKER_05: I provide comic relief and sanity checks, and I'm not afraid to admit what I don't know.
- 1:26:18SPEAKER_05: And then I bring pop culture analogies to the table, uh, which adds a modern hook to historical contents.
- 1:26:26SPEAKER_05: Alex is the relatable one.
- 1:26:28SPEAKER_05: He's not teaching history, he's reacting to it.
- 1:26:32SPEAKER_05: The dynamic works really well alongside Kelly, who dives deep and brings the historical facts.
- 1:26:39SPEAKER_05: Uh Kelly is the enthusiastic historian, passionate, knowledgeable, and a bit dramatic in the best way.
- 1:26:49SPEAKER_05: He's the guy who read the 12-hour audiobook and actually took notes.
- 1:26:54SPEAKER_00: Yes, I did.
- 1:26:54SPEAKER_05: Pretty spot on.
- 1:26:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:26:56SPEAKER_05: Pretty spot on.
- 1:26:57SPEAKER_00: Um it says that was like a 32-hour audiobook, by the way, not 12.
- 1:27:03SPEAKER_05: It says you keep things moving with structure and stories and you nerd out apologetically, which gives the show heart and substance.
- 1:27:12SPEAKER_05: Kelly is the podcast's intellectual anchor.
- 1:27:15SPEAKER_05: He's the reason you walk away knowing things you didn't even know you wanted to know.
- 1:27:20SPEAKER_05: And his excitement is contagious.
- 1:27:22SPEAKER_05: You can tell he really loves this stuff.
- 1:27:25SPEAKER_05: So if the show were a buddy movie, Alex is cracking wise in the passenger seat while Kelly's at the wheel, enthusiastically pointing out every weird and wonderful roadside attraction along the way.
- 1:27:38SPEAKER_05: And then it asked me if I wanted a tagline.
- 1:27:42SPEAKER_05: And it said that Kelly Kelly's is digging up the past one obsession at a time.
- 1:27:48SPEAKER_05: He's the guy who reads the entire royal lineage for fun and lives for a good beheading anecdote.
- 1:27:56SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:27:57SPEAKER_05: And it says, For me, calling BS.
- 1:28:00SPEAKER_05: On history, respectfully.
- 1:28:02SPEAKER_05: He's here for the drama, the dirt, and to ask, wait, how did this guy have six wives and still die thinking he was awesome?
- 1:28:10SPEAKER_05: And it said, uh, if you want a tagline for the show, Dirt Knap City, history's graveside gossip, where the past gets roasted one dead legend at a time.
- 1:28:23SPEAKER_00: Whoa, that's pretty long.
- 1:28:25SPEAKER_00: But uh but not too far off.
- 1:28:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:28:29SPEAKER_00: So well, first of all, congrats for doing that.
- 1:28:32SPEAKER_00: And and I think uh I agree with many of the things that were said, but I am gonna I'm gonna say in I wouldn't even call it my own defense, but in in uh as a counterpoint, I think if you fed it the transcript of a different show where you were the expert and I was the wisecracker, it would throw those things around.
- 1:28:54SPEAKER_00: Because I do think we reverse roles, you know.
- 1:28:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah someone's gotta keep the show moving, tell the facts, hit the high points, you know, educate, and then someone's gotta jump in and and make the jokes, ask the silly questions, go, oh what?
- 1:29:08SPEAKER_00: You know.
- 1:29:09SPEAKER_00: And so I think, for instance, Dick Clark.
- 1:29:11SPEAKER_00: I'd love for you to take the Dick Clark episode, get a transcript, and and run that through Chat GPT, ask the same prompts and see what it says.
- 1:29:21SPEAKER_05: It would probably say, This guy makes a lot of why does he giggle so much when we say the word dick?
- 1:29:28SPEAKER_00: And I would just say, who doesn't?
- 1:29:31SPEAKER_00: Who doesn't?
- 1:29:32SPEAKER_00: Well, Alex, hey man, I gotta say thank you for sticking with this and and uh helping me get this off the ground.
- 1:29:39SPEAKER_00: This was something we'd been talking about doing something like this for a long time.
- 1:29:45SPEAKER_00: The name, I'm I'm also gonna tell you real quick, the name came from my buddy Chris uh Justice, his father.
- 1:29:51SPEAKER_00: Um you've heard this story many times, I'm sure, Alex, but his father said all his friends were in Dirt Knap City.
- 1:29:57SPEAKER_00: And when I heard it, I was like, oh my goodness, this is gonna be something.
- 1:30:02SPEAKER_00: And here it is.
- 1:30:04SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much.
- 1:30:05SPEAKER_05: This has been a real fun diversion for me.
- 1:30:08SPEAKER_05: Um if you don't know, we have jobs in real life.
- 1:30:12SPEAKER_05: This isn't our full-time gig yet.
- 1:30:15SPEAKER_05: But um, but it's a real fun hobby.
- 1:30:18SPEAKER_05: I love doing it.
- 1:30:18SPEAKER_05: I love talking about.
- 1:30:20SPEAKER_05: I mean, how many of us get to just hang out with our friends and and spend an hour talking about, you know, Joseph Pilates or Ray Ray Krock or Matahari.
- 1:30:30SPEAKER_00: You know, it's it's not something that's or riding the back of a pickup truck, you know, so many, so many things.
- 1:30:36SPEAKER_00: So, so please, audience.
- 1:30:38SPEAKER_00: Uh, we feel like we're building an audience here, we're building a community.
- 1:30:42SPEAKER_00: We'd love to hear from you.
- 1:30:43SPEAKER_00: Send us a note, not at DirtNab City.
- 1:30:45SPEAKER_00: We would just, you know, even if you just say hello, we appreciate our regular listeners who always do comment and send us little texts if they know us that well.
- 1:30:54SPEAKER_00: Um your support's really appreciated.
- 1:30:57SPEAKER_00: Knowing that people are actually listening to this and getting something out of it.
- 1:31:00SPEAKER_00: Um, I think it's I'd I'd say we're 75% entertainment and 25% um uh education.
- 1:31:08SPEAKER_00: What do you think?
- 1:31:11SPEAKER_03: Other way around?
- 1:31:12SPEAKER_00: Depends on the episode, I guess.
- 1:31:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Joseph Pilates, apparently we didn't know what we're talking about.
- 1:31:17SPEAKER_05: But um take that up with JML 2014.
- 1:31:21SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 1:31:22SPEAKER_05: It's not like we're into you guys.
- 1:31:25SPEAKER_00: We've got a lot more coming this season in 2025, and we're gonna keep doing this as long as you guys keep uh listening.
- 1:31:32SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, if you're a company or someone with lots of money and you want to sponsor us, you better jump on the wagon now because these uh episodes are just getting bigger and bigger and more and more downloads, and pretty soon you won't be able to afford us.
- 1:31:47SPEAKER_00: Talking to you, Jolt, talking to you, Ferrari.
- 1:31:52SPEAKER_00: All right, thanks everybody.
- 1:32:00SPEAKER_01: Tuned in tight to the past parade, history's quirks in bright cascade, Henry's wives and royal spree, Joseph Pilotti shaping me, chef boy RT with a pasta dream, and those engines roaring steam, Amelia soaring past the cloud.
