- 0:02Welcome to Bible Chat, where we have devotional conversations
- 0:06rooted in Scripture and relevant for today, June 23rd, The gift
- 0:12that opens doors. Have you ever looked at someone
- 0:16else's talent OR opportunity and thought, I don't have anything
- 0:20like that? Maybe you've compared what you
- 0:22bring to what someone else brings and walked away feeling
- 0:25like yours doesn't measure up. Too small, too ordinary, too
- 0:31unremarkable to make a real difference.
- 0:34Here's something I want you to hear today.
- 0:36God doesn't do ordinary the way you're thinking about it.
- 0:40Proverbs chapter 18, verse 15 says an intelligent heart
- 0:44acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.
- 0:48Wisdom starts with a posture, a heart that stays curious, stays
- 0:52teachable, stays hungry to learn.
- 0:55And then verse 16 adds this remarkable promise.
- 0:58A man's gift makes room for him and brings him before the great.
- 1:02Your gift, whatever it is, has the power to open doors that
- 1:06your resume, your connections, or your social status never
- 1:10could. Not because you're impressive,
- 1:12but because God is strategic with the abilities He places in
- 1:16people. Look at Abigail in First Samuel
- 1:19chapter 25. She didn't have a title.
- 1:23She was married to a foolish, harsh man named Nabel who had
- 1:26just insulted David and his men, and David was on his way.
- 1:30With 400 soldiers to respond, the situation was about to turn
- 1:35catastrophic, and Abigail stepped in quickly.
- 1:40Wisely, she gathered food and supplies, rode out to meet
- 1:44David, and spoke words of wisdom that stopped David's anger in
- 1:48its tracks. She used what she had,
- 1:51resources, insight, courage, and a quick mind, and saved her
- 1:55entire household. She didn't wait to be asked.
- 1:59She didn't convince herself she was too small or unqualified.
- 2:03She saw a need, assessed what she had, and acted.
- 2:06And that action changed the course of everything.
- 2:10Psalm 72 gives us a picture of the kind of leadership and
- 2:13influence that truly blesses others, one marked by justice,
- 2:18care for the vulnerable, and wise use of authority.
- 2:21Verses 8 and 9 speak of dominion that spreads blessing from sea
- 2:25to sea. That's not a picture of hoarding
- 2:27power for yourself. It's a picture of influence used
- 2:31to bring blessing to others. Real influence always serves.
- 2:36So what does this mean for you? It means the gifts you've been
- 2:39given, whether it's away with words, a musical ear, a gift for
- 2:43mathematics, a warm presence that makes people feel seen, or
- 2:48the ability to organize and lead.
- 2:50Those are not accidents. They were placed in you
- 2:53intentionally by a God who has purposes bigger than you can
- 2:56currently see. The key is in the posture.
- 3:00Proverbs says wisdom seeks knowledge.
- 3:03Abigail acted with humility and speed.
- 3:05The gift alone isn't enough. It requires a heart willing to
- 3:09use it in service, willing to act when the moment comes,
- 3:13willing to believe that God can do something significant through
- 3:16something that feels small. You are not too young.
- 3:20You are not too inexperienced. You are not too ordinary.
- 3:24The right gift used at the right moment, with the right heart,
- 3:28opens doors that no one else can close.
- 3:31Let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for
- 3:35the specific gifts, abilities, and resources you have placed in
- 3:39each of us. Help us to stop comparing what
- 3:42we have to what others have and instead to steward faithfully
- 3:46what you've given us. Give us the wisdom to recognize
- 3:49opportunities, the courage to act like Abigail, and the
- 3:53humility to use our gifts in service rather than for show.
- 3:56Multiply even our smallest efforts for your glory in Jesus
- 4:01name, Amen. What if the night was never

- 5:02Proverbs chapter 18 Verses 15 to 16 World English Bible The heart
- 5:08of the discerning gets knowledge, the ear of the wise
- 5:10seeks knowledge. A man's gift makes room for him
- 5:14and brings him before great men. Psalm Chapter 72 World English
- 5:19Bible God, give the king your justice, your righteousness to
- 5:23the royal Son. He will judge your people with
- 5:26righteousness and your poor with justice.
- 5:29The mountains shall bring prosperity to the people.
- 5:31The hills bring the fruit of righteousness.
- 5:34He will judge the poor of the people.
- 5:37He will Save the Children of the needy and will break the
- 5:39oppressor in pieces. They shall fear you while the
- 5:43sun endures, and as long as the moon, throughout all
- 5:46generations. He will come down like rain on
- 5:49the moon grass as showers that water the earth.
- 5:52In his days the righteous shall flourish and abundance of peace
- 5:56until the moon is no more. He shall have dominion also,
- 6:00from sea to sea, from the river to the ends of the earth.
- 6:04Those who dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him.
- 6:07His enemies shall lick the dust. The kings of Tarshish and of the
- 6:10islands will bring tribute. The kings of Sheba and Seba
- 6:14shall offer gifts. Yes, all kings shall fall down
- 6:18before him. All nations shall serve him, for
- 6:21He will deliver the needy when he cries, the poor who has no
- 6:24helper. He will have pity on the poor
- 6:26and needy. He will save the souls of the
- 6:29needy. He will redeem their soul from
- 6:32oppression and violence. Their blood will be precious in
- 6:35His sight. They shall live and to Him shall
- 6:38be given of the gold of Sheba. Men shall pray for him
- 6:41continually. They shall bless him all day
- 6:43long. Abundance of grain shall be
- 6:46throughout the land. Its fruit sways like Lebanon.
- 6:50Let it flourish, thriving like the grass of the field.
- 6:53His name endures forever. His name continues as long as
- 6:57the sun. Men shall be blessed by Him.
- 7:00All nations will call Him blessed.
- 7:02Praise be to Yahweh God, the God of Israel, who alone does
- 7:06marvelous deeds. Blessed be His glorious name
- 7:09forever. Let the whole earth be filled
- 7:11with His glory. Amen and Amen.
- 7:14This ends the prayers by David the son of Jesse.
- 7:17First Samuel Chapter 25 World English Bible Samuel died and
- 7:23all Israel gathered themselves together and mourned for him and
- 7:27buried him at his house at Rama. Then David arose and went down
- 7:31to the wilderness of Perrin. There was a man in Mound whose
- 7:35possessions were in Carmel, and the man was very great.
- 7:39He had 3000 sheep and 1000 goats and he was shearing his sheep in
- 7:43Carmel. Now the name of the man was
- 7:46Nabel and the name of his wife Abigail.
- 7:49This woman was intelligent and had a beautiful face, but the
- 7:52man was surly and evil in his doings.
- 7:55He was of the House of Caleb. David heard in the wilderness
- 7:59that Nabel was shearing his sheep.
- 8:01David sent 10 young men and David said to the young men, go
- 8:05up to Carmel and go to Nabel and greet him in my name.
- 8:09Tell him long life to you. Peace be to you, peace be to
- 8:13your house, peace be to all that you have now.
- 8:15I have heard that you have shearers.
- 8:18Your shepherds have now been with us and we didn't harm them.
- 8:21Nothing was missing from them all the time they were in
- 8:24Carmel. Ask your young men and they will
- 8:26tell you. Therefore, let the young men
- 8:29find favor in your eyes, for we come on a good day.
- 8:33Please give whatever comes to your hand to your servants and
- 8:36to your son David. When David's young men came,
- 8:40they spoke to Nabel all those words in the name of David and
- 8:43waited. Nabel answered David's servants
- 8:46and said, Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse?
- 8:50There are many servants who break away from their masters
- 8:52these days. Shall I then take my bread, my
- 8:56water, and my meat that I have killed for my shearers, and give
- 8:59it to men who I don't know where they come from?
- 9:02So David's young men turned on their way and went back and came
- 9:07and told him all these words David said to his men.
- 9:10Every man put on his sword, every man put on his sword,
- 9:14David also put on his sword. About 400 men followed David,
- 9:19and 200 stayed by the baggage. But one of the young men told
- 9:23Abigail, Nabel's wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers
- 9:28out of the wilderness to greet our master, and he insulted
- 9:31them. But the men were very good to
- 9:34us, and we were not harmed, and we didn't miss anything as long
- 9:38as we went with them when we were in the fields.
- 9:41They were a wall to us both by night and by day, all the while
- 9:44we were with them keeping the sheep.
- 9:47Now therefore, know and consider what you will do, For evil is
- 9:51determined against our master and against all his house, for
- 9:55he is such a worthless fellow that one can't speak to him.
- 9:58Then Abigail hurried and took 200 loaves of bread, 2
- 10:02containers of wine, 5 sheep ready dressed, 5 seas of parched
- 10:07grain, 100 clusters of raisins, and 200 cakes of figs, and laid
- 10:12them on donkeys. She said to her young men, go on
- 10:16before me, behold, I am coming after you.
- 10:19But she didn't tell her husband Nabel, as she rode on her donkey
- 10:24and came down by the covert of the mountain, that behold, David
- 10:27and his men came down toward her, and she met them.
- 10:31Now David had said, surely in vain.
- 10:34I have kept all that this fellow has in the wilderness, so that
- 10:37nothing was missed of all that pertained to him.
- 10:40He has returned me evil for good.
- 10:43God do so to the enemies of David, and more also if I leave
- 10:47of all that belongs to him by the morning light so much as one
- 10:50who urinates on a wall. When Abigail saw David, she
- 10:54hurried and got off her donkey and fell before David on her
- 10:58face and bowed herself to the ground.
- 11:01She fell at his feet and said, On me, my Lord, on me.
- 11:04Be the blame. Please let your servant speak in
- 11:06your ears. Hear the words of your servant.
- 11:10Please don't let my Lord pay attention to this worthless
- 11:13fellow Nabel, for as his name is, so is he.
- 11:17Nabel is his name, and folly is with him.
- 11:20But I, your servant, didn't see my Lord's young men whom you
- 11:23sent. Now.
- 11:24Therefore, my Lord, as Yahweh lives and as your soul lives,
- 11:28since Yahweh has withheld you from blood guiltiness and from
- 11:31avenging yourself with your own hand now, therefore let your
- 11:35enemies and those who seek evil to My Lord be as navel.
- 11:40Now this present which Your servant has brought to my Lord,
- 11:43let it be given to the young men who follow.
- 11:45My Lord, please forgive the trespass of Your servant, for
- 11:50Yahweh will certainly make My Lord a sure house.
- 11:53Because My Lord fights Yahweh's battles, evil will not be found
- 11:57in you all your days. Though men may rise up to pursue
- 12:01you and to seek your soul, yet the soul of My Lord will be
- 12:04bound in the bundle of life with Yahweh, your God.
- 12:07He will sling out the souls of your enemies as from the hollow
- 12:11of a sling. It will come to pass.
- 12:14When Yahweh has done to my Lord, according to all the good that
- 12:17he has spoken concerning you and has appointed you Prince over
- 12:20Israel, that this shall be no grief to you, nor offense of
- 12:25heart to my Lord, either that you have shed blood without
- 12:28cause, or that my Lord has avenged himself.
- 12:31When Yahweh has dealt well with my Lord, then remember your
- 12:34servant David said to Abigail, Blessed is Yahweh, the God of
- 12:39Israel, who sent you today to meet me.
- 12:42Blessed is your discretion, and blessed are you who have kept me
- 12:45today from blood guiltiness and from avenging myself with my own
- 12:49hand. For indeed, as Yahweh the God of
- 12:53Israel lives, who has withheld me from harming you.
- 12:56Unless you had hurried and come to meet me, surely there
- 13:00wouldn't have been left to Nabel by the morning light so much as
- 13:03one who urinates on a wall. So David received from her hand
- 13:07that which she had brought him. Then he said to her, Go up in
- 13:11peace to your house. Behold, I have listened to your
- 13:14voice and have granted your request.
- 13:17Abigail came to Nabel, and behold, he held a feast in his
- 13:20house, like the feast of a king. Nabel's heart was merry within
- 13:24him, for he was very drunk. Therefore she told him nothing
- 13:28until the morning light. In the morning when the wine had
- 13:32gone out of Nabel, his wife told him these things and his heart
- 13:35died within him, and he became as a stone.
- 13:39About 10 days later Yahweh struck Nabel so that he died.
- 13:43When David heard that Nabel was dead, he said, Blessed is
- 13:47Yahweh, who has pleaded the cause of my reproach from the
- 13:50hand of Nabel and has kept back his servant from evil.
- 13:54Yahweh has returned the evil doing of Nabel on his own head.
- 13:58David sent and spoke concerning Abigail to take her to himself
- 14:02as wife. When David's servants had come
- 14:05to Abigail to Carmel, they spoke to her, saying, David has sent
- 14:09us to you to take you to him as wife.
- 14:12She arose and bowed herself with her face to the earth, and said,
- 14:16Behold, your servant is a servant to wash the feet of the
- 14:19servants of my Lord. Abigail hurried and arose and
- 14:23rode on a donkey with five ladies of hers, who followed
- 14:26her, and she went after the messengers of David and became
- 14:30his wife. David also took Ahinome of
- 14:33Jezreel, and they both became his wives.
- 14:36Now Saul had given Mikkel his daughter David's wife to Pulte,
- 14:40the son of Laish, who was of Gallim.
