June 23 - Wisdom That Interrupts Destruction · Bible Chat Devotional

Welcome to Bible Chat, where we have devotional conversations
0:06
rooted in Scripture and relevant for today, June 23rd, The gift
0:12
that opens doors. Have you ever looked at someone
0:16
else's talent OR opportunity and thought, I don't have anything
0:20
like that? Maybe you've compared what you
0:22
bring to what someone else brings and walked away feeling
0:25
like yours doesn't measure up. Too small, too ordinary, too
0:31
unremarkable to make a real difference.
0:34
Here's something I want you to hear today.
0:36
God doesn't do ordinary the way you're thinking about it.
0:40
Proverbs chapter 18, verse 15 says an intelligent heart
0:44
acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.
0:48
Wisdom starts with a posture, a heart that stays curious, stays
0:52
teachable, stays hungry to learn.
0:55
And then verse 16 adds this remarkable promise.
0:58
A man's gift makes room for him and brings him before the great.
1:02
Your gift, whatever it is, has the power to open doors that
1:06
your resume, your connections, or your social status never
1:10
could. Not because you're impressive,
1:12
but because God is strategic with the abilities He places in
1:16
people. Look at Abigail in First Samuel
1:19
chapter 25. She didn't have a title.
1:23
She was married to a foolish, harsh man named Nabel who had
1:26
just insulted David and his men, and David was on his way.
1:30
With 400 soldiers to respond, the situation was about to turn
1:35
catastrophic, and Abigail stepped in quickly.
1:40
Wisely, she gathered food and supplies, rode out to meet
1:44
David, and spoke words of wisdom that stopped David's anger in
1:48
its tracks. She used what she had,
1:51
resources, insight, courage, and a quick mind, and saved her
1:55
entire household. She didn't wait to be asked.
1:59
She didn't convince herself she was too small or unqualified.
2:03
She saw a need, assessed what she had, and acted.
2:06
And that action changed the course of everything.
2:10
Psalm 72 gives us a picture of the kind of leadership and
2:13
influence that truly blesses others, one marked by justice,
2:18
care for the vulnerable, and wise use of authority.
2:21
Verses 8 and 9 speak of dominion that spreads blessing from sea
2:25
to sea. That's not a picture of hoarding
2:27
power for yourself. It's a picture of influence used
2:31
to bring blessing to others. Real influence always serves.
2:36
So what does this mean for you? It means the gifts you've been
2:39
given, whether it's away with words, a musical ear, a gift for
2:43
mathematics, a warm presence that makes people feel seen, or
2:48
the ability to organize and lead.
2:50
Those are not accidents. They were placed in you
2:53
intentionally by a God who has purposes bigger than you can
2:56
currently see. The key is in the posture.
3:00
Proverbs says wisdom seeks knowledge.
3:03
Abigail acted with humility and speed.
3:05
The gift alone isn't enough. It requires a heart willing to
3:09
use it in service, willing to act when the moment comes,
3:13
willing to believe that God can do something significant through
3:16
something that feels small. You are not too young.
3:20
You are not too inexperienced. You are not too ordinary.
3:24
The right gift used at the right moment, with the right heart,
3:28
opens doors that no one else can close.
3:31
Let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for
3:35
the specific gifts, abilities, and resources you have placed in
3:39
each of us. Help us to stop comparing what
3:42
we have to what others have and instead to steward faithfully
3:46
what you've given us. Give us the wisdom to recognize
3:49
opportunities, the courage to act like Abigail, and the
3:53
humility to use our gifts in service rather than for show.
3:56
Multiply even our smallest efforts for your glory in Jesus
4:01
name, Amen. What if the night was never
4:05

5:02
Proverbs chapter 18 Verses 15 to 16 World English Bible The heart
5:08
of the discerning gets knowledge, the ear of the wise
5:10
seeks knowledge. A man's gift makes room for him
5:14
and brings him before great men. Psalm Chapter 72 World English
5:19
Bible God, give the king your justice, your righteousness to
5:23
the royal Son. He will judge your people with
5:26
righteousness and your poor with justice.
5:29
The mountains shall bring prosperity to the people.
5:31
The hills bring the fruit of righteousness.
5:34
He will judge the poor of the people.
5:37
He will Save the Children of the needy and will break the
5:39
oppressor in pieces. They shall fear you while the
5:43
sun endures, and as long as the moon, throughout all
5:46
generations. He will come down like rain on
5:49
the moon grass as showers that water the earth.
5:52
In his days the righteous shall flourish and abundance of peace
5:56
until the moon is no more. He shall have dominion also,
6:00
from sea to sea, from the river to the ends of the earth.
6:04
Those who dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him.
6:07
His enemies shall lick the dust. The kings of Tarshish and of the
6:10
islands will bring tribute. The kings of Sheba and Seba
6:14
shall offer gifts. Yes, all kings shall fall down
6:18
before him. All nations shall serve him, for
6:21
He will deliver the needy when he cries, the poor who has no
6:24
helper. He will have pity on the poor
6:26
and needy. He will save the souls of the
6:29
needy. He will redeem their soul from
6:32
oppression and violence. Their blood will be precious in
6:35
His sight. They shall live and to Him shall
6:38
be given of the gold of Sheba. Men shall pray for him
6:41
continually. They shall bless him all day
6:43
long. Abundance of grain shall be
6:46
throughout the land. Its fruit sways like Lebanon.
6:50
Let it flourish, thriving like the grass of the field.
6:53
His name endures forever. His name continues as long as
6:57
the sun. Men shall be blessed by Him.
7:00
All nations will call Him blessed.
7:02
Praise be to Yahweh God, the God of Israel, who alone does
7:06
marvelous deeds. Blessed be His glorious name
7:09
forever. Let the whole earth be filled
7:11
with His glory. Amen and Amen.
7:14
This ends the prayers by David the son of Jesse.
7:17
First Samuel Chapter 25 World English Bible Samuel died and
7:23
all Israel gathered themselves together and mourned for him and
7:27
buried him at his house at Rama. Then David arose and went down
7:31
to the wilderness of Perrin. There was a man in Mound whose
7:35
possessions were in Carmel, and the man was very great.
7:39
He had 3000 sheep and 1000 goats and he was shearing his sheep in
7:43
Carmel. Now the name of the man was
7:46
Nabel and the name of his wife Abigail.
7:49
This woman was intelligent and had a beautiful face, but the
7:52
man was surly and evil in his doings.
7:55
He was of the House of Caleb. David heard in the wilderness
7:59
that Nabel was shearing his sheep.
8:01
David sent 10 young men and David said to the young men, go
8:05
up to Carmel and go to Nabel and greet him in my name.
8:09
Tell him long life to you. Peace be to you, peace be to
8:13
your house, peace be to all that you have now.
8:15
I have heard that you have shearers.
8:18
Your shepherds have now been with us and we didn't harm them.
8:21
Nothing was missing from them all the time they were in
8:24
Carmel. Ask your young men and they will
8:26
tell you. Therefore, let the young men
8:29
find favor in your eyes, for we come on a good day.
8:33
Please give whatever comes to your hand to your servants and
8:36
to your son David. When David's young men came,
8:40
they spoke to Nabel all those words in the name of David and
8:43
waited. Nabel answered David's servants
8:46
and said, Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse?
8:50
There are many servants who break away from their masters
8:52
these days. Shall I then take my bread, my
8:56
water, and my meat that I have killed for my shearers, and give
8:59
it to men who I don't know where they come from?
9:02
So David's young men turned on their way and went back and came
9:07
and told him all these words David said to his men.
9:10
Every man put on his sword, every man put on his sword,
9:14
David also put on his sword. About 400 men followed David,
9:19
and 200 stayed by the baggage. But one of the young men told
9:23
Abigail, Nabel's wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers
9:28
out of the wilderness to greet our master, and he insulted
9:31
them. But the men were very good to
9:34
us, and we were not harmed, and we didn't miss anything as long
9:38
as we went with them when we were in the fields.
9:41
They were a wall to us both by night and by day, all the while
9:44
we were with them keeping the sheep.
9:47
Now therefore, know and consider what you will do, For evil is
9:51
determined against our master and against all his house, for
9:55
he is such a worthless fellow that one can't speak to him.
9:58
Then Abigail hurried and took 200 loaves of bread, 2
10:02
containers of wine, 5 sheep ready dressed, 5 seas of parched
10:07
grain, 100 clusters of raisins, and 200 cakes of figs, and laid
10:12
them on donkeys. She said to her young men, go on
10:16
before me, behold, I am coming after you.
10:19
But she didn't tell her husband Nabel, as she rode on her donkey
10:24
and came down by the covert of the mountain, that behold, David
10:27
and his men came down toward her, and she met them.
10:31
Now David had said, surely in vain.
10:34
I have kept all that this fellow has in the wilderness, so that
10:37
nothing was missed of all that pertained to him.
10:40
He has returned me evil for good.
10:43
God do so to the enemies of David, and more also if I leave
10:47
of all that belongs to him by the morning light so much as one
10:50
who urinates on a wall. When Abigail saw David, she
10:54
hurried and got off her donkey and fell before David on her
10:58
face and bowed herself to the ground.
11:01
She fell at his feet and said, On me, my Lord, on me.
11:04
Be the blame. Please let your servant speak in
11:06
your ears. Hear the words of your servant.
11:10
Please don't let my Lord pay attention to this worthless
11:13
fellow Nabel, for as his name is, so is he.
11:17
Nabel is his name, and folly is with him.
11:20
But I, your servant, didn't see my Lord's young men whom you
11:23
sent. Now.
11:24
Therefore, my Lord, as Yahweh lives and as your soul lives,
11:28
since Yahweh has withheld you from blood guiltiness and from
11:31
avenging yourself with your own hand now, therefore let your
11:35
enemies and those who seek evil to My Lord be as navel.
11:40
Now this present which Your servant has brought to my Lord,
11:43
let it be given to the young men who follow.
11:45
My Lord, please forgive the trespass of Your servant, for
11:50
Yahweh will certainly make My Lord a sure house.
11:53
Because My Lord fights Yahweh's battles, evil will not be found
11:57
in you all your days. Though men may rise up to pursue
12:01
you and to seek your soul, yet the soul of My Lord will be
12:04
bound in the bundle of life with Yahweh, your God.
12:07
He will sling out the souls of your enemies as from the hollow
12:11
of a sling. It will come to pass.
12:14
When Yahweh has done to my Lord, according to all the good that
12:17
he has spoken concerning you and has appointed you Prince over
12:20
Israel, that this shall be no grief to you, nor offense of
12:25
heart to my Lord, either that you have shed blood without
12:28
cause, or that my Lord has avenged himself.
12:31
When Yahweh has dealt well with my Lord, then remember your
12:34
servant David said to Abigail, Blessed is Yahweh, the God of
12:39
Israel, who sent you today to meet me.
12:42
Blessed is your discretion, and blessed are you who have kept me
12:45
today from blood guiltiness and from avenging myself with my own
12:49
hand. For indeed, as Yahweh the God of
12:53
Israel lives, who has withheld me from harming you.
12:56
Unless you had hurried and come to meet me, surely there
13:00
wouldn't have been left to Nabel by the morning light so much as
13:03
one who urinates on a wall. So David received from her hand
13:07
that which she had brought him. Then he said to her, Go up in
13:11
peace to your house. Behold, I have listened to your
13:14
voice and have granted your request.
13:17
Abigail came to Nabel, and behold, he held a feast in his
13:20
house, like the feast of a king. Nabel's heart was merry within
13:24
him, for he was very drunk. Therefore she told him nothing
13:28
until the morning light. In the morning when the wine had
13:32
gone out of Nabel, his wife told him these things and his heart
13:35
died within him, and he became as a stone.
13:39
About 10 days later Yahweh struck Nabel so that he died.
13:43
When David heard that Nabel was dead, he said, Blessed is
13:47
Yahweh, who has pleaded the cause of my reproach from the
13:50
hand of Nabel and has kept back his servant from evil.
13:54
Yahweh has returned the evil doing of Nabel on his own head.
13:58
David sent and spoke concerning Abigail to take her to himself
14:02
as wife. When David's servants had come
14:05
to Abigail to Carmel, they spoke to her, saying, David has sent
14:09
us to you to take you to him as wife.
14:12
She arose and bowed herself with her face to the earth, and said,
14:16
Behold, your servant is a servant to wash the feet of the
14:19
servants of my Lord. Abigail hurried and arose and
14:23
rode on a donkey with five ladies of hers, who followed
14:26
her, and she went after the messengers of David and became
14:30
his wife. David also took Ahinome of
14:33
Jezreel, and they both became his wives.
14:36
Now Saul had given Mikkel his daughter David's wife to Pulte,
14:40
the son of Laish, who was of Gallim.
