Lucas: Today we're going to talk about jobs. What do people do? We'll learn a few occupation words in Malay. Luna: Oh nice! I've been wondering how to say 'teacher' or 'doctor'. Lucas: Perfect place to start. Let's begin with 'I am a doctor.' In Malay: 'Saya doktor.' Luna: Saya doktor. That sounds straightforward. Lucas: Exactly. Now if you want to say 'He or she is a teacher,' you say: 'Dia guru.' Luna: Dia guru. So guru means teacher. Got it. Lucas: Right. Now what about bus driver? 'Saya pemandu bas.' Pemandu means driver, and bas is bus. Luna: Saya pemandu bas. That's a bit longer but I think I have it. Lucas: You're doing great. One more: 'Dia polis.' meaning 'He or she is a police officer.' Luna: Dia polis. Nice and short. Lucas: Let's practice together. Repeat after me: Saya doktor. Luna: Saya doktor. Lucas: Dia guru. Luna: Dia guru. Lucas: Saya pemandu bas. Luna: Saya pemandu bas. Lucas: Dia polis. Luna: Dia polis. Okay I think I've got them. Lucas: Let's make a little conversation. Imagine you meet someone and ask, 'Adakah dia doktor?' That means 'Is he a doctor?' Luna: Adakah dia doktor? And if yes, I can say: Ya, dia doktor. Lucas: Exactly. You're catching on. Now let's try a mini dialogue. I'll ask you about someone. Luna: Okay, hit me. Lucas: Siapa dia? Dia guru? Luna: Yeah, wait. 'Siapa dia' means who is he, right? So: Ya, dia guru. Lucas: Absolutely. You're a natural. Luna: Thanks! So now I can talk about jobs a little. That's useful.
