- Pinaki Kathiari (00:00) hello everybody. Welcome to Between the Seasons, the mini series from Why Does It Feel So Wrong to be Human at Work. I'm Pinaki Kathiari and our co-host Chris is still out this week. There's something going around. Filling in as my co-host today is our producer Bree. Say hi Bree. Bree Bartos (00:16) Hi everyone. Pinaki Kathiari (00:18) And today we're being joined by Nazmul Islam, a marketing communications consultant. work closely with that local wisdom and he's also the producer behind the YouTube channel, History Meets Finance. So welcome Nazmul. Nazmul (00:32) Yeah, thanks for having me. Pinaki Kathiari (00:34) Right. And today we're digging into a work related Reddit post and reacting it together for the first time. So Bree is going to surprise us as she always does. So what do you have for us today, Bree? Bree Bartos (00:46) All right, so I was poking around on Reddit as I usually do, and I was spending a lot of time in R/Podcasting and found a post that I wanted to share today that, you know, OP is looking for some guidance and input, and I feel like it is very much related to internal communications, employee experience, very much in our realm. So. Like I said, today's post comes from r slash podcasting. It is actually five years old and is titled, Advice on Keeping Podcasting and Professional Life Separate. My co-host and I met through work. We became best friends and decided to start a podcast. That sounds very similar to someone else's story that I know. It started Innocent Enough with just your classic two friends talking about life. Pinaki Kathiari (01:31) Hehehehe Bree Bartos (01:38) But after a few months, we decided to rebrand under a more defined vision. We relaunched with a new brand, Elevator Pitch and Hook. And so far, it's been good for grabbing attention and that has led to some consistent growth. The catch? The new content is pretty raunchy. Our concept centers on taboos and we really lean into it. or religion. but we do talk about stuff like poop, sex, et cetera. We ran into a problem this week when our workplace, which is within a pretty stuffy industry, found out about the podcast. We don't use our full names, we never talk about our company, and essentially keep our personal social accounts separate from our show account, but a coworker caught on. This meant they heard our sound bites, which were of course the highlights of the most salacious parts of the show. Now that we're found out, I'm looking for a little advice. Has anyone else had to navigate a similar situation at work? How do you balance your podcast and your professional persona? How do you promote a podcast that you have to keep secret? We're really excited about this new direction and absolutely don't wanna stop, but we've also built careers we're proud of. And you know, we wanna be able to eat and buy stuff. Any guidance or input is really appreciated. Pinaki Kathiari (03:00) Man. Nazmul (03:01) Well, any podcast that focuses on poop is probably going to do well, so... Pinaki Kathiari (03:05) Yeah, Bree Bartos (03:07) Yeah. Pinaki Kathiari (03:08) right. There's certain things that do well too. Yep. That's so funny. And it's so interesting, kind of like how your side projects kind of come into play in your work day and stuff like that. yeah, have you experienced that, Nazmul, in the work that you're doing? And oh, it's the same. Nazmul (03:28) Yeah, it's interesting because I think for most companies, have to, especially when you're starting a new job, you have to declare whether you have ⁓ like a social media presence that is not private ⁓ and you have like an influencer kind of background because companies want to get some kind of like a separation between what you're promoting on your personal and your creator kind of like lifestyle. Bree Bartos (03:50) Mm-hmm. Nazmul (03:56) versus what you would say for the company. there is that ⁓ flag. when ⁓ I started my last job, my last corporate job, I had to declare it. I think it's always best to be upfront and just to declare. Because in the age of the internet, when you're ⁓ hosting a podcast or you have videos, it's probably not going to stay. ⁓ private thing, especially if you have like a large following or if people enjoy your content, it's probably going to get shared. So your employers will at some point find out. ⁓ So I always say, you know, like it's better to just be upfront and clear about what's happening rather than, ⁓ you know, having to deal with it later on. ⁓ So in my previous job, I had to like declare it. I checked it with my line manager. It seemed fine. So, you know, It wasn't an issue for me, but I can certainly understand for this specific example, it could be contentious. So I don't have the experience with, with, ⁓ salacious content per se, but, but yeah. And from my perspective, like just, yeah, just being upfront, I think is always helpful. Pinaki Kathiari (04:59) Hahaha Bree Bartos (05:04) Yeah, and us either. Pinaki Kathiari (05:09) Yeah, yeah, totally. Bree Bartos (05:11) think, so the two hosts, they met at work, so they were already in this job. And I do think it does add another layer from the company's perspective that it's two of their employees. It's not just one, it's two of them that started it together. And I remember in those times putting in all my bios, like, Pinaki Kathiari (05:16) Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Bree Bartos (05:32) my opinion does not reflect the opinion of my company or something like that. ⁓ So like my question would be is does this company have a social media policy and what does that look like? And did you sign one? Nazmul (05:36) Mm-hmm. Pinaki Kathiari (05:42) Absolutely. Exactly. And look at that. the handbook has probably a lot of that stuff. That is interesting because I know a lot of our clients have like policies for like social media and whatnot. I'm not sure in the states that people have to declare if they have it or I'm not sure if it's a question. I know it's not a question that we ask essentially. Bree Bartos (06:07) Mm-hmm. Pinaki Kathiari (06:09) but it might be something that is definitely coming because it's here as well, or maybe I just don't know about it yet. But it's true. I think I like the idea of just honesty upfront. This is what I'm doing and this is the account. We'll kind of start in the non-Solacious zone first and then we'll get into the what if it was Solacious. Because I'm not sure if like, actually the way they describe the podcast was... like depending on how salacious it is, right? Like if they're talking about topics that are salacious as opposed to the content is in itself explicit or sexual in total nature, right? There's kind of like a... Bree Bartos (06:49) but they did say the new content is pretty raunchy. Pinaki Kathiari (06:53) Yeah, it's raunchy. it's kind of like, me, I'm like wondering, are they just talking about it or are they trying to get... Like, is this getting into like, OnlyFans territory or is it still educational but using Howard Stern-like raunchy or shock-jock approach to educate, right? So there's a kind of like two different ballgames. We'll stick with the first, the shock-jock raunchy type of mode for a second. Bree Bartos (07:03) Mm. Yeah. Nazmul (07:19) Let's just assume that to be safe. Pinaki Kathiari (07:20) We'll assume that for right now and maybe we'll touch into the other side because that happens too. It is the world that we live in. But I like the upfront, ⁓ just kind of like saying it out there and just being honest, like this is what we're doing, this is why we're doing it. We're going at this like level of humor or raunchiness or what have you for such and such reason. And I think there's some kind of merit. Bree Bartos (07:33) Mm-hmm. Pinaki Kathiari (07:48) to the experimentation that people do that I think everyone could ⁓ learn from, right? Because these little experiments that you wouldn't necessarily try in the workplace or anything like that, that give you some kind of learning to human behavior and what audiences gravitate to and how to even hone in an audience. And plus it's a side project, you enjoy doing it and things like that. I think that's a creative outlet. So like, I wouldn't want anybody to like... Bree Bartos (08:16) Mm-hmm. Pinaki Kathiari (08:18) hamper down on it. Bree Bartos (08:19) especially those are still like very heavy pandemic times where there are still, you know, a lot of people struggling or being like a little bit isolated and everything. And so like a podcast is a really good creative outlet to have at that time. And I think that like, you would have to be transparent with your workplace and be like, we've set out. Pinaki Kathiari (08:23) Hmm. Mm-hmm. Nazmul (08:33) Absolutely. Bree Bartos (08:40) Like we've set these boundaries already to where we will not mention our last names. We will not mention the company. We're doing X, Y, Z so that the two don't get tied together at all. And I feel like hopefully the company would understand that and like be accepting of that. Pinaki Kathiari (08:56) Yeah. Yeah. And we've had ⁓ folks in the same way, even ⁓ Kelsey Buckholtz right? At the time she was working in a large company and she authored a book on stress and burnout. And there was terms within the company and her to like keep them separated and how to handle that. Now in like social media accounts like LinkedIn and things like that where like you don't necessarily have a separation. It's kind of like you have to intentionally set those boundaries to create the separation. ⁓ Daniel Mendez, ⁓ who ⁓ hashtag comms job is another example of that. Well, if you go to Daniel Mendez's LinkedIn account, you won't necessarily see exactly where he works and things like that because of the policies of the company that he works with. ⁓ Want to keep clear separations and the policies make it so that it's in his best interest to keep Bree Bartos (09:40) Mm-hmm. Pinaki Kathiari (09:53) clear separations as he wants to kind of keep doing the effort on comms jobs. Nazmul (09:58) I think it also depends very heavily on the type of company that we're talking about. Because if you think about it, like, let's say the company in question works in some kind of a financial product or they work in reporting or journalism. That's when they get very precious about what ⁓ kind of content their employees are talking about. Because I worked in a fintech company before. And they were very concerned about whether employees would talk about recommending certain financial products or recommending certain tech products, because that would be a direct conflict of interest. So defining what conflict of interest looks like is very important. And there's some common sense on the part of the employee as well to figure out whether that could be like a potential issue. The second ⁓ example that I talked about is like, say you work in a reporting organization, like a news outlet or you know, a media kind of company. If you have your own political views that might conflict with what the establishment is, you know, going for, then obviously they will be very precious about what you're going to say on your, ⁓ you know, on your own and whether that might be construed as an opinion of the organization. But then let's say you work for a construction company or a real estate company. I don't think they would be concern about what you're saying on your own terms. So that's one side. And then you also have the flip side where sometimes the company would be actually encouraging of you having your own ⁓ kind of, you know, social media presence. Like ⁓ I've seen a number of YouTube strategists or content strategists, social media experts who have their own following and that's valued very highly by the company for which they work because that experience directly translates to the Pinaki Kathiari (11:34) Hmm. Nazmul (11:51) companies ⁓ benefits as well. It also helps the company. ⁓ And then I saw a number of examples like that recently, which ⁓ I think does add value. I think I mentioned real estate before. I've seen a number of real estate ⁓ companies. They encourage their employees to have really fancy social media profiles because that helps with the selling of products. on their end as well. I think it depends on the company. So as long as you go in with a clear understanding of what is the conflict of interest, is there going to be like a potential problem and then use common sense to figure out where you stand and what the risk is. You know, that's always the best way to do it. But like you said, Pinaki think just being upfront and candid, I think is always the best way to go because everything is discoverable. Pinaki Kathiari (12:40) Yeah. I like the way you explained that. It's much more calm ⁓ than me. Because as a creative, sometimes you just get an idea like, hey, let's do a podcast. Why does feel so run-by-human at work? And you're like, is that going to make us look bad? And I just want to jump into a project. So I understand the juices that flow or the energy that comes from that, and then the levelheadedness of trying to find those boundaries and know where the conflicts Nazmul (12:47) haha Bree Bartos (12:52) Mm-hmm. Pinaki Kathiari (13:12) may arise. So yeah, similar to this podcast and everything like that. Like I have my own views, but this is about education. So it's not about my views per se, but it's about like digging in to like understand the why behind things or just ask questions behind things and whatnot. But it's funny, like one of my first jobs, was in a very compliance or compliance regulated organization, large organization, but it was when Nazmul (13:29) Mm-hmm. Yep. Pinaki Kathiari (13:42) This was actually even before YouTube came out. was one of my coworkers really enjoyed doing videos and he found this site called Rever where he could upload videos and get ⁓ ad revenue from it. Again, before YouTube. So he used to do these little like shorts in the office and it was hilarious. And I was in a few of them. I was in one of them where we played the gag of what happens if you like your tie goes in the paper shredder. That was funny. And that ended up on the home page of Yahoo.com. And the company asked for them to take it off because it was filmed within the office space and things like that. So it's funny. And I kind of go at it sometimes with a slap on the wrist approach type of thing. Nazmul (14:28) it depends on your risk appetite, obviously. Also, are you comfortable kind of like going ahead, doing rather than, you know, apologize rather than ask for permission kind of approach. But it also depends on your long-term kind of like career trajectory. it, is it worth the risk sometimes? it's all, it like with all things in life, so the answer is like, it depends. Pinaki Kathiari (14:32) Mm-hmm. Is it worth the risk? Yeah. It depends. That's right. That's right. It's a good point. Is it worth the risk too? So for like back to like the rare poise, you know, it's kind of rather easy when the goal is a little bit more education and not in conflict with the organization. But when like the subject matter starts getting a little bit more risqué, so to speak, and stuff like that, and you start seeing this conflict, like how do you, how do you handle that? Like, so. Nazmul (15:15) and Pinaki Kathiari (15:21) I wonder if advice is rather opposed. Like there is a potential reputational harm to the organization. If like it gets word out that like you have this type of content, don't know the podcast. Now I feel like listening to it to know like the level of raunch that's going on here. Like, are we talking about? But, ⁓ but yeah, like how do we give them advice? Like, what would you say? Like, ⁓ and the other thing is if you also decide like, you know what, I think this Bree Bartos (15:29) Mm-hmm. Nazmul (15:29) Mm-hmm. Bree Bartos (15:37) haha Pinaki Kathiari (15:51) doesn't pose a conflict, but it could be seen as strange for my coworkers. How do I kind of keep that relationship still okay with my coworkers knowing that I'm doing this on the side? Any thoughts on that, Bree or Nazmul? Bree Bartos (16:06) Yeah. Well, with what you just said, yeah, if I heard my coworkers talking very openly, inappropriately, and who knows what they're saying, right? But you would look at that person, we're using our imagination. Yeah, and I feel like if I was, I would look at that person differently if I learned something like, if they showed up to work and were just clean cut. Pinaki Kathiari (16:20) Mm-hmm. We're using our imagination right now to fill in the blanks. So yeah. Bree Bartos (16:38) clean cut, to the point, like, you know, not a jokester at all. And then they, if I found out they had this like inappropriate podcast where they're like talking about sex and being raunchy and all this stuff, I would look at that person differently. I wouldn't listen to the podcast, but. ⁓ Pinaki Kathiari (16:52) Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I mean, yeah, you kind of like you hear about things like, you know, some people have like entertainer, like, you know, night jobs and stuff like that. And I said that out loud and I'm like realizing what that sounds like. But when I said that, meant like they play on a band or they're, you know, like or they're a comedian. Right. Yeah. You know, it could be a whole bunch of different things that like you'd see them like the the that side of them. And you're like, wow, that's different than the day side. And there's people I Nazmul (17:06) Yeah. comedian. Bree Bartos (17:13) mean, it could be anything. Pinaki Kathiari (17:26) I know a few of them who like to keep them really separated as well because it's like my entertainment side doesn't go into my day work and vice versa and stuff. Bree Bartos (17:30) Mm-hmm. Nazmul (17:37) I think it also depends on ⁓ the individual and I guess also which country we're talking about. like if we're talking about like North America, ⁓ culturally, I think it's more acceptable to be very open. But I think if you compare what things were like maybe even 20, 30 years ago, ⁓ there was more of an expectation for conformity with societal standards. Pinaki Kathiari (17:45) Hmm. Nazmul (18:07) But now there's more room for individualism and expression. I think generally people are more accepting of it. So people are more themselves, especially with Gen Z entering the workforce, Gen Alpha sometimes entering the workforce, these things as well. But ⁓ there's more acceptance of individualistic artistic expressions. And I think there should be room for that. if I had to give advice to this specific podcast host, Pinaki Kathiari (18:07) Hmm. Mm. Nazmul (18:36) I'd probably put on my YouTuber hat and ask them for their analytics. ⁓ I would ask them, okay, so what's your growth metrics and at what point are you strong enough in your revenue where even if you're impacted negatively, you wouldn't really care? ⁓ Or if you're still very heavily dependent on the jobs that you're doing, ⁓ and you value the relationships with your colleagues and coworkers and you don't want to make them feel uncomfortable. And that's more of a factor than, you know, the side project that you're doing. Then obviously you want to err on the side of like being a bit more respectful of the company. ⁓ so yeah, I would, I would make that decision based on analytics. Pinaki Kathiari (19:21) Yeah. Bree Bartos (19:25) Yeah. Pinaki Kathiari (19:26) I like that you're basically approaching it like, is this a valid business or is this like a passion, fun, artistic, creative outlet? And if you'd like see that if this is a valid business, this is something that's getting me traction. ⁓ It is getting followers. You are getting asked to like say speak or be involved in other things and stuff like that. That's valid traction and you may want to consider that. Otherwise kind of... Bree Bartos (19:34) Mm-hmm. Nazmul (19:35) Correct. Yeah. Pinaki Kathiari (19:55) consider like a subscription based things where it's not public. Where like, you know, if you do have a follower set and they're really enjoy the stuff like that, put it behind something so it's just not totally out there for everyone, you know, and maybe there's another revenue stream there and stuff like that too. That thing might, my God. Now after you. Bree Bartos (19:58) Yeah? Patreon. That's a good point. I wish, go ahead. I was gonna say I wish I had better advice because I can slightly relate, slightly, because it wasn't salacious content. ⁓ But I did used to stream on Twitch and I did that for two years. And I was streaming, just playing video games, doing my makeup, being silly with my friends. ⁓ But I was very much in my like E-girl era, you know? black lipstick and little ponytails. And I didn't tell anyone at work, I didn't want anyone at work to see me like that because it was very different than how I showed up to work. And I didn't tell a soul. only, Pinaki, I only told you what my gamer tag was 10 minutes ago because I didn't want you to stumble across the TikTok with the clips. And I stopped doing that in 2023. Pinaki Kathiari (20:55) Yeah. Nazmul (20:58) death Pinaki Kathiari (21:07) Mm-hmm. Bree Bartos (21:08) I don't have any, I feel like I don't have any good advice because I kept it a secret as well, but I wasn't doing anything bad. Like I wasn't doing, like, yeah, I was dropping the F-bomb every other sentence, but I wasn't doing anything scandalous that would be like, hey, we can't have you representing the company if this got out. And I think, I guess, yeah, it's like, is it really worth it? Pinaki Kathiari (21:10) Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Bree Bartos (21:37) At the end of the day, is it worth sharing your thoughts and your opinions to potentially lose your income and your job? Pinaki Kathiari (21:44) Yeah, or cause like relationship damage for like your coworkers and things like that. Or, just kind of like, yeah, in some, it depends on I think how upfront or honest you are about it and how far you're taking it. Like I think there's probably a spectrum here where it could go too far in a spectrum, you know, where we get bringing it in too much. So if it is something that should be separated or whatnot, I think, I think it should. Cause I think overall, Nazmul (21:45) Yeah. Bree Bartos (21:49) Yeah. Pinaki Kathiari (22:15) Overall, what I'm glad is people or the world seems to be becoming more open with diversity. And when I say diversity, I mean in all sense of the word from not only backgrounds, ethnics, but age, thought patterns, et cetera. And just being accepting of that because diversity is hard and it takes a lot of work, but it is so beneficial at the end. get perspectives and insights and experimentation and things like that. you wouldn't get otherwise. So I'm for trying and exploring your passions, but at what cost is there going to be a fun thing? Nazmul (22:54) employer perspective, like if you were the employer, Bree and Pinaki like what would your reaction be if you were to find out that, you know, your employees had that kind of a, ⁓ that kind of a podcast. Pinaki Kathiari (23:08) Yeah, I'd want to least listen. know, I'd like, what is this? What's going on? like, so if it was me, and we do have like a lot of folks ⁓ who are bands, entertainers at Local Wisdom And I really do welcome that other like creative outlet ⁓ in there. ⁓ And, you know, I've gone to shows, I've gone to, and things like that. If it was Salacious and things like that, if it starts getting to a point where I'd Bree Bartos (23:10) Hahaha Pinaki Kathiari (23:38) I would want to listen, would want to understand what is the boundaries, would want to understand how do we create the separation, and would want to understand talk upfront of what do we do if, say, a client finds out or something like that. How do we put this perspective out? Bree Bartos (23:55) So, while you've been talking, I've done more poking and I've done more digging and I did find their podcast. Pinaki Kathiari (24:00) No. ⁓ right. When was the last episode? Bree Bartos (24:04) ⁓ it was last post the January 12th. So like a week and a half ago. ⁓ so I, I will say I thought that this was going to be two men and it is not. It is two women. it's two sisters. Wait, that doesn't make sense. That can't be right because they said they were two friends that met at work. Wait a minute. Pinaki Kathiari (24:09) wow. can we have them on the show? Okay. maybe the host, maybe the host change somewhere in the middle there. There's a story. Nazmul (24:32) Yeah, maybe they changed. Bree Bartos (24:34) I to OP's Reddit account and 11 days ago they commented on Share Your Podcast episode, like Share Your Podcast with us and they linked to it and it says it's two sisters. it's, they explore fan favorite fictional couples who didn't get their happy ending. Two sisters journey through top ships from fandoms across the internet. So it's like a fan fiction. which I'm yeah Pinaki Kathiari (25:04) So they did go fully deeper into the romance side of things, it seems right now. ⁓ Bree Bartos (25:11) Yeah, so maybe they rebranded in the last five years, but... Pinaki Kathiari (25:13) Yeah. Nazmul (25:14) Yeah, I feel like they changed course a little bit. Pinaki Kathiari (25:16) They changed course Bree Bartos (25:16) Yeah, Pinaki Kathiari (25:17) a little bit. Bree Bartos (25:17) or maybe, you know, the podcast with the two co-hosts, like the two co-workers who became friends, maybe that one didn't work out and so they started one with their sister. Pinaki Kathiari (25:26) Yeah, and it happens too, I think too, even like with this podcast, right? We were just kind of like looking at what we enjoy doing and what's working and not. And that's how this between the seasons came about. Or like, let's try something new and experiment a little because that's what it is all about. Bree Bartos (25:35) Yeah. Pinaki Kathiari (25:40) I think that's what we have so far for the Reddit episode right now. Any last bits of thoughts or wisdom to share with anyone going through something similar? Bree Bartos (25:49) I think I feel as though if you want to start a creative project that could potentially get you in trouble at work, before you start it, talk to HR, talk to your employee, like talk to your manager maybe, be like, hey, I'm about starting this personal side project. Would that be okay or would the company be against it and try and shut it down? Because I mean, if you've worked there for a while and your co-host is also a employee there and you had this idea together. I think it's worth stopping and asking before you dive in because then you'll know upfront what you need to do to make sure you're not getting trouble at work or that if they do find out you're going to lose your job. Pinaki Kathiari (26:34) Yeah, I'd say also like, and if it gets too like crazy, and if it's not harmful to you or other people, the content meaning, just to, cause I'm not going to condone content that is harmful for yourself or others. But yeah, you could go anonymous. mean like Banksy or whatnot, you know, there's, there's something about that. Like there's like, what is it? What do they call it? Headless YouTube channels or faceless? Yeah. Bree Bartos (27:00) VTubers. Faceless. Could also Nazmul (27:00) Faceless. Faceless channel. That's all for my channel. Bree Bartos (27:04) be a VTuber. I was gonna ask, yours is faceless? Pinaki Kathiari (27:04) You can, that's right. Exactly. So there's ways to do it and not like put yourself out there as well to kind of get that creative outlet going and stuff like that. Bree Bartos (27:15) Yeah, only this, between the seasons, is the first time we've had video episodes. know, like the last two seasons, it was all audio only. Pinaki Kathiari (27:23) Yeah. And the last words in Osmo. Nazmul (27:23) Yeah. I mean, I think it would, again, it depends if the, ⁓ if your employer, if you're like considering like putting out content and you want to be an influencer, so to speak, ⁓ try to figure out what's important to your employer. So if they have, you know, stuff that's like in regulatory, in the regulatory compliance area, If they have stuff in ⁓ finance and you have like access to privileged information, ⁓ if you're working in a publicly traded company where you might have access to information that ⁓ you'll get before it's made public, do a risk assessment and see ⁓ whether from an employer's point of view, you are seen as a risk. If you are, then try to make sure that the content that you're putting out does not conflict and use your common sense there. Pinaki Kathiari (28:14) Hmm. Nazmul (28:19) And if you feel like it's, it really does, you know, have a significant overlap, it's always better to kind of inform, because then that secures your job. Because in this economy, I think it's very important to, if you're reliant on a, on a full-time job, ⁓ know, prioritize that. it's, while, I mean, having said that, it's also very important to focus on your passion and focus on a creative outlet because you never know what it could lead to. So I don't. I don't condone completely abandoning your things just because you're humble, you might be against it, but use your common sense. Try to figure out where there could be a conflict of interest and use your best judgment. Pinaki Kathiari (28:59) That's so fantastic. ⁓ You said it so eloquently, and now I understand why your YouTube following is so amazing.
