Transcript
- 0:00Hello and welcome to. Off the shelf with Phil and
- 0:03Dave. The movie talk show where each
- 0:04week one of us takes a movie off our shelf and presents it to the
- 0:07other four. Discussion this week coming off
- 0:11of Daves Shelf, we've got 2013's Prisoners, directed by Danny
- 0:17Villeneuve and written by Aaron Guzikowski.
- 0:22Yep. And Dave, why is this movie on
- 0:25your shelf? That's an interesting question.
- 0:28Isn't it? A little bit recently, Mother's
- 0:32Day, I think I saw my family, brother came down, sister and
- 0:35nephews and it turns out my eldest nephew is a fan of Jake
- 0:41Gyllenhaal. Aren't we all?
- 0:42Well, he's 16, OK, So it gives me some hope of the future that
- 0:47someone that age takes interest in a guy, not necessarily our
- 0:52generation, because that's more of the Harrison Ford.
- 0:54I don't want to aid you here. Any peaked 20. 16.
- 0:57But we've done source code. We think he's pretty solid.
- 1:00Actor generally speaking, just some in the Bride recently.
- 1:04And because I have a mug that says World's Greatest Uncle,
- 1:08yes, I felt obligated to do this movie.
- 1:12And my sister is a librarian, been for decades.
- 1:15And she says I will get it for you and have it ready for pickup
- 1:21at your library, which is literally a 2 minute walk for
- 1:24me. First time you ever been in?
- 1:26Yeah, and it took me 5 days to get there.
- 1:30Lazy, lazy. So I have made a temporary spot
- 1:36on my shelf for library rentals. I had to get rid of a few Bruce
- 1:41movies. It wasn't easy.
- 1:42I'm just kidding, I would never do that.
- 1:44I had a little bit of space, fortunately just did some
- 1:47shuffling. I had this Cancun movie.
- 1:49I just got rid of a veteran that's very inside but very
- 1:54inside, and I decided that we would do it just because of the
- 1:59timing. I have to get back to the
- 2:01library, right? I don't want to be late.
- 2:03Of course not. It's under my sister's
- 2:05credentials. That's right.
- 2:06I don't want to get any questions so and there we have
- 2:11it. Wonderful had.
- 2:12You seen it before? I had, yeah.
- 2:14OK. But I had 0 recollection beyond
- 2:18having seen it. OK, I watched it, you know,
- 2:21video, whatever else, 201314 some of that region.
- 2:24OK. And at the time, I don't really
- 2:27remember my feelings about it other than I think I liked it.
- 2:31But for whatever reason, when I took it off this time, when you
- 2:34said prisoners, I was like, I think that's this one.
- 2:37And then when I watched it, I was like, I've seen this, but I
- 2:40could not tell you that beats. It's a pretty broad title, Sure.
- 2:45It could be anything. Sure.
- 2:46And I went in completely clean. I didn't watch the trailer.
- 2:50I knew Hugh Jackman was in it, and obviously I knew Gyllenhaal
- 2:53was in it on the poster. That makes sense.
- 2:55That was the extent of it. I asked my wife, Hey, listen, I
- 2:57need to spend time with you and watch this movie.
- 3:00Check out the trailer. Not with me in the room.
- 3:03I went downstairs, I gave her 3 or 4 minutes.
- 3:06I came back up, she was still watching the trailer.
- 3:10Wow. I think she was on it Instagram
- 3:11first. Just don't think she did the
- 3:14task. But she finished it and said
- 3:16let's go watch it. And it was a long movie because
- 3:20like you mentioned Seville Nov but we were going to watch half
- 3:23and half but we stuck it through.
- 3:24So that's said something about the movie.
- 3:26But what does IMDb say about the?
- 3:28Movie. Well, all the faithful describes
- 3:31this movie has a desperate father takes the law into his
- 3:35own hands after police failed to find 2 kidnapped girls.
- 3:39Does it for. Me, it's all you need.
- 3:42Police failure what man in his own hands 2 kidnapped girls
- 3:46that's. It.
- 3:47That's it. That's the movie that's going to
- 3:48be interesting. We don't do a lot of
- 3:51psychological thrillers, I feel anyway.
- 3:54Maybe. Check the document, check the
- 3:56excel sheet. I enjoy them, typically
- 3:59speaking. Yeah.
- 4:00Like, I think it's one of those underrated genres that I don't
- 4:05like it until I watch it and I'm reminded I like psychological
- 4:08thrillers because I love cop shows.
- 4:10So I'm already into, like, who did it?
- 4:12Yeah, the mystery. And this is has another level of
- 4:15intrigue, something interesting other than the usual somebody
- 4:18broke the law, we don't know what it is, we found them sort
- 4:21of thing. So it it can be interesting if
- 4:22done right. Yeah, I think that there's We
- 4:25Did Fall in which I suppose would be something that falls
- 4:27into this category a little bit. Yeah.
- 4:30And Frailty, I would suggest with this category a little bit.
- 4:34I mean, people will classify The 6th Sense as a horror movie,
- 4:38which I've never done. I think that's wrong.
- 4:41Closer into the psychological thriller thing, not dissimilar
- 4:46to Silence of the Lambs, which we've all done.
- 4:48So it is something we've ventured into a little bit over
- 4:51the years. What I think is interesting
- 4:54about the quote UN quote psychological thriller is how
- 4:59much it gets away with by not calling itself a horror movie
- 5:04because if you watch this, you sort of thinking, OK, this is
- 5:07the highbrow movie with a list actors.
- 5:11I'd say. But I'd also say it's pretty
- 5:13brutal at times. It had actually cut some scenes
- 5:16there. Because of that, pretty violent,
- 5:18pretty gruesome at. Times I had to look away a
- 5:20couple times. There you go.
- 5:21Yet this movie is regarded very highly in the grand scheme of
- 5:27things, whereas something like Friday the 13th.
- 5:29Oh, here we go. Or.
- 5:30Halloween or any of these other slasher movies which I would
- 5:33argue the violence is not nearly as visceral.
- 5:35As no penetrative, I think this one is, they're just using that
- 5:39as a we. We don't like these movies like
- 5:42the Eberts of the world. Feels like it's a bit of a
- 5:44targeted, I think. I think so.
- 5:46Now it doesn't matter to me because I love horror movies and
- 5:48I love psychological thrillers, but there is this weird divide
- 5:51where it's acceptable on one level and not another, and that
- 5:54kind of pisses me off a little bit.
- 5:55The double standard. I have a few examples but I
- 5:58can't think of anything right now.
- 6:01Preparation buddy, welcome to the table.
- 6:04Speaking of tables, that can get us right into the movie because
- 6:08if you notice there is No title sequence, we get into a a
- 6:13Thanksgiving. We get deers.
- 6:16We we get deer. Opens on and there is a title
- 6:19sequence, but there is the word the title, obviously the title
- 6:23of the. Film.
- 6:25You know what I meant. That's right, but it opens with
- 6:27the Lord's Prayer. Oh yes, you're very familiar
- 6:29with. It of course I disregarded it
- 6:31every day that I went to school. Yeah, old enough to remember
- 6:35going into school and doing it. I don't know if it was every day
- 6:37or every Thursday. Or every day, Miss Gross.
- 6:41Yeah, coincidentally, that was my Grade 3 English teacher of a
- 6:45book that I just was given that back today.
- 6:48It was in an old hamper that I took, Yeah.
- 6:52Or was given from the bookshelf in my Grade 3 English class.
- 6:57Wow, that's a long. Time long time ago.
- 7:01Won't get into specifics, but that book has existed in my
- 7:03possession. For 53 years, 35 years, there's
- 7:07some interesting connective tissue do you want to recite the
- 7:10prayer for? Us.
- 7:11I couldn't remember but the key take away is forgive us our
- 7:15trespasses. And for those, for those that
- 7:19trespass against us, yeah, I went to church every week until
- 7:22about 14. Yeah.
- 7:23This is part of the. Indoctrination it was Why?
- 7:26Was part of the routine. Sure, it came usually about 2/3.
- 7:29Through here we go. You think you'd open with?
- 7:31That no, no. They had a really other good
- 7:33opener. Oh yeah.
- 7:36So that I thought was an interesting way to open the
- 7:38movie because again, I I don't remember anything about it and I
- 7:41certainly didn't know anything about it when I first saw it.
- 7:43So I'm coming out of it relatively blind on both counts.
- 7:46I heard it and because I know religion can be pretty strong
- 7:53thing in a lot in some States and.
- 7:54Certainly was all over last week's movie, if you.
- 7:56Recall. Yeah, that's true.
- 7:57It was there, so I didn't think much of it.
- 8:00OK. I think, OK this guy is just
- 8:02religious and wants to say a little prayer before he kills a
- 8:05deer. There's a lot of throughout the
- 8:07movie crosses in the frame. I mean, the idea of Thanksgiving
- 8:11in and of itself, there's a lot of imagery that kind of falls
- 8:14into that, but I don't think the movie makes a meal out of it.
- 8:17Yeah, it's a little more subtle than frailty.
- 8:20Sure, Obviously that's right like.
- 8:22That's the movie. That's angels and demons coming
- 8:24from heaven to rid the world. Yeah, that is definitely
- 8:27something, an undercurrent that I felt didn't overplay yourself,
- 8:30and I think that's a good thing. And Speaking of Thanksgiving, we
- 8:34know you like your Turkey is dry as bark on a tree.
- 8:38That is very true. Still can't believe that.
- 8:42Oh yeah. Like take paper towel and wipe
- 8:44it down if it's too juicy. Yeah.
- 8:46You're strange guy is. And we have Terrence Howard as
- 8:50well. That's not.
- 8:51That's right, yeah. We talk a lot about him.
- 8:54He's really good generally. He was amazing in Four Brothers.
- 8:56I was a highlight for you. Yeah, one of many highlights for
- 8:59you actually. Yeah, he's really great in
- 9:00hustle and. Flow I haven't seen off the
- 9:02shelf. Looks good but funny connective
- 9:04tissue is. Mark Wahlberg was in Four
- 9:06Brothers. He was cast to be in this movie.
- 9:10Didn't work out for whatever reason, ended up doing Lovely
- 9:13Bones. One of the worst movies I've
- 9:14ever seen. Yeah, the New Zealand movie.
- 9:16I was there, but he was still an executive producer, but he was
- 9:21tied to it. And another thing I thought was
- 9:23interesting as well, since we're talking about casting, was
- 9:26Gosling wanted the role and him and Jake have a friendly
- 9:31competition going for roles. I don't know.
- 9:33If you knew. That couldn't tell you.
- 9:34No, Villeneuve won it. Jake didn't even audition for
- 9:37it. OK, but luckily for Gosling, he
- 9:39got to work with him four years later on bladder.
- 9:42Only 49. Yeah, so I thought that was a
- 9:44fun story. Christian Bale was attached to
- 9:46this for a while. Jackman was attached.
- 9:49Unattached reattached. Wow, that sell John Wayne
- 9:52Bobbitt thing. There you go.
- 9:54There's a throwback. But casting in general, I think
- 9:59it landed on something that was pretty good, pretty solid.
- 10:02Yeah. We don't think we're in good
- 10:03hands. Yeah, we don't usually play that
- 10:05game when it comes to this as to who could have or might have or
- 10:08should have done it better. But this cast to me is, I mean,
- 10:11it's the cast you have. So to think about it could have
- 10:13been better with. I think this is perfectly.
- 10:15Cast. I'm thinking about Gosling
- 10:16because I just went to theatres. Oh my goodness, here it.
- 10:19Is and saw the Hailey Mary project.
- 10:25Right. No, no clothes.
- 10:26You had all the right sounding words, but not no it's project.
- 10:31Hail Mary Mary also religious a little bit.
- 10:35Yeah. Well, that that would say that
- 10:37is very religious. Hail Mary itself.
- 10:39I could spoil it for you, but Rockies in it.
- 10:41That's right, yeah. Pretty good film though if you
- 10:44haven't seen it got extended in theatres.
- 10:47Opportunities to go see it. Anybody go to the movies?
- 10:49Go see the movies. And casting, I think Gosling,
- 10:52yeah, is perfectly cast. Could could Jake have done?
- 10:55It No, no. There we go.
- 10:57The answer. I think he's got the sense of
- 10:58humor. No Jake.
- 10:59And this I think is really good. Oh yeah, and he's really good in
- 11:02a movie called Zodiac, which he plays a somewhat similar lighter
- 11:06version of this. But I don't get funny guy when I
- 11:09think of Jake. That kind of funny.
- 11:11Which is funny. One of his tattoos.
- 11:13Zodiac related. Fun fact.
- 11:16Smart man. This research buddy.
- 11:17Yeah, more research than just finding out that you like dry
- 11:20Turkey. That's in the archive.
- 11:22That is, that is, you've been listening.
- 11:24And like I mentioned, I have no idea what this movie is about.
- 11:27Like we're still still. No.
- 11:29I mean, is it about Terrence Howard playing the saxophone?
- 11:32I hope not. He's not very good.
- 11:34Or the trumpets don't know my brass.
- 11:37I know my wins. Sure don't know my.
- 11:38Brass, you missed opportunity. I think a saxophone is a win.
- 11:42Oh God. Yeah, they wouldn't put in the
- 11:45brass category. Tuba.
- 11:47That's brass. Yes, that's big brass buddy,
- 11:50brass balls. One thing I actually do and how
- 11:53I really connected to this movie is I like to go for a walk after
- 11:57a big Turkey meal. Digest.
- 12:00Just go around the block. Sure, it's all you need to do,
- 12:02stretch the legs. They say it's really healthy
- 12:04just to go for a little jaunt outside.
- 12:06Now, the adults didn't do that. They're just drinking and
- 12:09playing. The trumpet, Yeah, but they paid
- 12:12the price. Yes, they did.
- 12:14It's terrible parenting here. And there's this RV.
- 12:17Now, me not knowing anything about this movie, I have a
- 12:20feeling, Phil, that the RV might just play a relatively strong
- 12:25role in this film. Yeah, that's the sense that you.
- 12:28GOT I mean, there's a slow push in on it.
- 12:29The movie music is ominous and there's a low angle to impress
- 12:32upon us that it is threatening. So the camera from inside is if
- 12:36someone's looking outside. So I think there's a lot of
- 12:38things that would tell you that this is going to be a thing.
- 12:40I picked up on it. Good for you.
- 12:41Now I'm not a parent. Truth.
- 12:44Not yet. Not that I know of.
- 12:46Clarify that yourself. Yeah, I'm a parent.
- 12:50You're doing a great job. Yeah.
- 12:51College. Sure.
- 12:52Thriving. Thriving.
- 12:54Yeah, Slosh is one of their kids names.
- 12:56It's. Great.
- 12:58Obviously two kids get kidnapped as a parents.
- 13:03The performances are bang on. Yeah.
- 13:05Like I can feel the emotion from all four parents.
- 13:08But having a little bit different perspective, like
- 13:10yourself having kids, does it have that sort of emotional like
- 13:14punch to draw the audience? In I think even if you don't
- 13:17have children, I think the idea of innocent children getting
- 13:20kidnapped is evocative no matter.
- 13:23What? Yeah.
- 13:24If you feel anything at all, yeah.
- 13:25I think if you're a human being and you're somehow read that
- 13:28children have been kidnapped, beaten down, raped, murdered,
- 13:31whatever the case would happen to an innocent child that
- 13:33doesn't know any better, sure. I don't think you have to be a
- 13:35parent to feel something there. Sure.
- 13:37But I was thinking more, is it easier to put yourself in
- 13:40Dover's shoes because he has actions later that are?
- 13:45Questionable. Sure, I guess so, yeah.
- 13:47I mean, I watch movies from an empathetic point of view anyway.
- 13:50So it's. I would be saying if I'm
- 13:53watching Jake, I'm in his head. Yeah, you know, so it doesn't
- 13:57really connect that much. But I do believe that people in
- 14:01the world that are parents that would do that for sure.
- 14:04In fact, most of his performance is somewhat disturbingly
- 14:09reminded me. Maybe This is why I put it out
- 14:10of my brain in 2013 of my former father-in-law.
- 14:14Oh. Yeah, from these shitty goatee
- 14:18to the I know everything attitude to the I will safe and
- 14:21protect everybody all the time despite not really doing any of
- 14:25that. Got you.
- 14:27Those things resonated far more than the I'm going to, you know,
- 14:30torture some guy for. Now we're able to move.
- 14:34Past, but it's still. There.
- 14:37This character for. Sure.
- 14:39Yeah. And Jake, We get introduced to
- 14:41him in a cafe, not a diner. No, no, no presidents around.
- 14:46I didn't know what he was in this.
- 14:49Well, he looks pretty bad. Ass.
- 14:50I know my first impression is this is the villain Skeezy.
- 14:54I don't know about Skeezy, buddy.
- 14:56Take it easy. Take it easy, Not Skeezy, but
- 14:59then I realize he's having somewhat of a friendly
- 15:01conversation, being playful with this.
- 15:03I'm a horse by the way, just for signs.
- 15:05OK? If you're right, good for you.
- 15:07It's not bad. And I'm an Aries, so it's like
- 15:10all the. Best the one you don't want to
- 15:11be the whistleblower or no, Sorry, the rat.
- 15:15Yeah, yeah. Funny guy, Sure.
- 15:17Check in the archives. But we realized he's on the CB
- 15:20real quick. OK, this guy is a police
- 15:22officer. OK, He's probably a protagonist
- 15:25in the movie. And I feel a little bit at ease
- 15:28knowing that the lives of these children might be in the hands
- 15:31of Jake because he gets things done.
- 15:33Yeah, I mean, it's very short order that the kids get taken
- 15:38and they have a match on the RV. Yeah, he's 5 minutes away.
- 15:42Yeah, easy peasy. Let's just get it sorted out and
- 15:46when they get to the RV, the 1st order of business is it just
- 15:50drives into a tree. Yeah.
- 15:53And that made at that time made absolutely no sense to me.
- 15:56Well, what I thought was, is Mad Max driving this car?
- 16:00Shut up. Yes, that's the equivalent of
- 16:04how long it takes to like a daring getaway to It's over.
- 16:08We felt like that touché. Yeah, But yeah, you find out
- 16:12that when they pull him, it's Paul Dano, which I again had
- 16:15completely forgotten he was in. Yeah, I like this kid.
- 16:18Tarantino doesn't. I don't give a shit about
- 16:20Quentin Tarantino. That guys a fucking idiot.
- 16:22I mean, he gravitates towards these roles.
- 16:25Sure, clearly and generally does a pretty good job, I think.
- 16:28He's incredible in the fable means he's really good in There
- 16:31will be blood He's good and Love and mercy.
- 16:33He's good and looper, however small that part is.
- 16:36I I don't get it. I think he's really good in
- 16:38this. I'm looking forward to the next
- 16:39Batman because. That's true.
- 16:41Fantastic in the Riddler as well.
- 16:42Yeah, he's going to be the. I assume so anyway.
- 16:45Yeah, safe bet. It's reasonable anyway.
- 16:47He's in Arkham. Yeah, hopefully he doesn't have
- 16:50to do any driving, but we find out he has the IQ of a 10 year
- 16:56old. Yeah, we discovered this through
- 16:58the interrogation scene. I love interrogation scenes in
- 17:02movies. I think about LA Confidential,
- 17:05which we watched with Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce and their
- 17:08interrogations with different criminals in that movie.
- 17:10Yeah. Do you like good cop, bad cop?
- 17:12Is that one more routines you like?
- 17:13Absolutely. Yeah.
- 17:14Who wouldn't? I don't know.
- 17:15So I think Jake's incredible in this scene and I think Dano is
- 17:18incredible. The fragility and the ominous
- 17:23portrayal that is Dano I think is really compelling and
- 17:28watching Gyllenhaal do whatever the fuck he's doing.
- 17:32Yeah, getting right up in his. Face and the sort of twitchy
- 17:34Ness this is a guy that clearly is like burned out like he
- 17:37strikes me as a guy that hasn't slept in 15 days and is that
- 17:40level of intensity and so that contrast getting in his face
- 17:45fucking with him and Dano's just quiet bits of don't touch me
- 17:49doesn't say much stop it's short but I thought really delivers
- 17:52the contrast between these two characters.
- 17:54You know why? Tell me.
- 17:55He watched 100 hours of interrogation footage for this
- 18:00role. You really did.
- 18:01That's prep. Yeah.
- 18:02Like me. Yeah.
- 18:03Prepping for this role right here.
- 18:06Uh-huh. The eye twitching thing I
- 18:07noticed pretty early. Yes.
- 18:09Sticks out. It does.
- 18:10And I love it. Sure.
- 18:12Tell me why. A.
- 18:13It was his idea. When you first watched it
- 18:15though, why? Why?
- 18:16Didn't know that at the time, actually, yeah.
- 18:18You know, I I don't know. It just I it was just.
- 18:22It's unique. Yeah.
- 18:24Could just be a case of dry eyes.
- 18:25You could be wearing some contacts.
- 18:27I don't know. It just seemed to fit the
- 18:29character, like you said, strung out.
- 18:31Yeah. I don't have to have an
- 18:32explanation for you. I just like it.
- 18:34OK. I just like it.
- 18:35Fuck off, just fit the character.
- 18:40OK, maybe he just really good I actor.
- 18:42Yeah, he's fantastic. I think he conveys all of those
- 18:45things. I just thought you would have
- 18:46more to say. He knows his strengths.
- 18:48He's like, I'm a good eye actor. Can I do it?
- 18:50Yeah. And Bill knows like, you can do
- 18:51whatever you want. But you won't let me.
- 18:53You didn't have to audition for this.
- 18:55He's got carte blanche, as you would say.
- 19:07But now, I don't know if you know this rule.
- 19:08I do, because I watch a lot of Bosh.
- 19:10OK, Speaking of interrogation scenes, there's a few in there.
- 19:13Check it out on HBO. Just kidding, it's not prime.
- 19:17Sure. And you have 48 hours to charge
- 19:21anybody that you've arrested, OK.
- 19:23If you don't have a strong enough case, they will let you
- 19:26go. They'll still tail you.
- 19:28Maybe. They have risen probable cause.
- 19:30Probable cause is very important.
- 19:32I know how much you need just to tail a guy though, like anybody
- 19:34could. Just I'm telling you right now.
- 19:36I can sit inside anyone's house if you wanted to.
- 19:38Don't do that. By the way.
- 19:39A little creepy. I found that out the hard way.
- 19:42Binoculars would give it away. So they don't really have
- 19:47enough, and I don't think they do either.
- 19:49This decision to me watching all this.
- 19:51Bosch. Yeah.
- 19:52You let him go, you got nothing. Really.
- 19:55Yeah, absolutely. These are the things that I like
- 19:57about the cop shows I watch. Obviously the interrogation, but
- 20:00it's the investigative. Sure.
- 20:02Part of thing, The procedural piece.
- 20:04Yeah. I watch a ton of Forensic Files.
- 20:06It's our dinner time show Freak, apparently the feel good show
- 20:11for me. OK, so we have Jake, who's never
- 20:14lost the case. Truth.
- 20:15Similar to Matlock, what they say.
- 20:17Yeah, that's been said. That's law and order right
- 20:20there. Half the shows Jake is the cop
- 20:22and Matlock is the lawyer. Watch that show.
- 20:25Yeah, you would watch. That show, of course you would
- 20:27over dinner. And our good friend Jake pays a
- 20:31visit to his first not suspect, but the ants of Mr. Alex Jones.
- 20:37Is the first Ant. The first, first Ant of many to
- 20:40come. Yeah, he's doing the
- 20:42investigation. So we've got Alex and custody.
- 20:44We need to know who he is, so talk to his and his closest
- 20:47living relative. And it's Melissa Leo who won an
- 20:50Oscar. No TV only does movies that I
- 20:53would know her. That's right.
- 20:55She's great in The Fighter. She's in a bunch of other
- 20:56movies. She's really good and fairly
- 20:59unassuming in this. And what we do get, however, in
- 21:02this, to me, is where there's a lot of opportunities to talk
- 21:05about Roger Deakins. Deakins, he's good.
- 21:08He's phenomenal, great, great cinematographer.
- 21:11And they've worked together before.
- 21:12Bill know, I think the Blade Runner they did together.
- 21:15Well, after this, after this, yeah, 2017 it nominated for an
- 21:18Oscar, I thought an incredibly good looking movie as well.
- 21:21Deacons only won 1 Oscar was nominated 16 times.
- 21:23Wow, maybe 17. But this scene he pulls up and
- 21:27you know every shot is on purpose.
- 21:28This movie is incredible for the direction.
- 21:31It's an early one in his career. That's the impression I got.
- 21:34It's a quick side note. When I think about Villeneuve, I
- 21:36think about obviously Dune. I think about Arrival.
- 21:38Yeah, I think about these sci-fi ish extraordinary types of
- 21:43movies. And when I think about Nolan, I
- 21:46think about Interstellar and Inception, and then I think
- 21:49about Prestige. Like I haven't seen it but I
- 21:51feel like this is the. Period one out.
- 21:53The odd one out of it and they both start with letter P so I
- 21:56thought that was. Something I think that's not
- 21:58unreasonable. Founded.
- 22:00Yeah, unreasonable for sure. Just watching the direction, the
- 22:03style and the look, This is fantastic.
- 22:07He pulls up, we see the Trans Am in the foreground, Jakes in the
- 22:11middle ground. We've got Holly in the
- 22:13background. And then later when he's looking
- 22:15through Alex's room, we see a couple of other knickknacks and
- 22:19so forth, but he sees a little RV.
- 22:21Yeah. Clearly a fan.
- 22:22And he just taps it on the desk. And the way in which this rolls
- 22:25and is perfectly framed, one take, I don't know how many it
- 22:29was, it could have been 100, but just the aesthetic sense to show
- 22:33that it's not flashy, it's not showy, it's just about
- 22:38craftsmanship and it's beautiful.
- 22:41Yeah, because when he makes that movement with the truck, where
- 22:44it ends up is completely natural.
- 22:46It's where they choose to frame it.
- 22:47Or they have the frame and they continue to do that shot until
- 22:51it's right. Special features, buddy, you
- 22:52figure. All that, Either way, it's a
- 22:54gorgeous shot and we get Gyllenhaal doing his job.
- 22:58Good or bad, right or wrong. It shows that investigations can
- 23:02go cold. It shows investigations lead you
- 23:04to different places. You see one thing 100 times away
- 23:07from it, and there it. Is I think that's one of the
- 23:09things I really like about these types of movies and why I watch
- 23:12Bosch. Why I watch all those police
- 23:14shows is I love the process and I love the clues.
- 23:18I like the Haha moments where you see something and I know
- 23:22there's going to be 1 eventually.
- 23:24Some shows do it too much, like in Suits.
- 23:26I'm watching it when Mike the smart guy has this revelation
- 23:31because of some character said one word.
- 23:33If you go to that well too many times, it becomes a little bit
- 23:36too formulaic. Just one or two of those moments
- 23:39I I think is the sweet. Spot, I think you're right too
- 23:41much and you're sort of like roll your eyes and and not
- 23:44enough. It's sort of like I want more
- 23:46like this is your job, right? You can't just find it first
- 23:48thing. So I like that there's some
- 23:50digging. And it's another very important
- 23:51thing in those cop shows. You need evidence.
- 23:54Yeah, that's the key right there.
- 23:56And I've seen a lot of vehicles be impounded on Forensic Files
- 24:00and they're finding little fibers, of course, specs of
- 24:03blood. But this RV, surprisingly is
- 24:07clean but not clean. You see something like that and
- 24:11you just assume bad guy because the way the camera is presenting
- 24:15him, peering out of the window, the ominous RV, right?
- 24:18Like this is bad guy runs away and the actor playing him and
- 24:22Paul Dano was kind of a bad guy generally.
- 24:24So that part, it's like, yeah, tick the box, makes sense
- 24:27completely. And then you find out that the
- 24:29RV is completely clean and they've looked and they've
- 24:32dusted and they've done all the things and we're cross cutting.
- 24:35I like that juxtaposition. As you should.
- 24:38And obviously the movie is intended to do that.
- 24:42We talk a lot about trying to figure out the movie.
- 24:44At any point where you caught up in trying to figure out the
- 24:48movie? Or did you let it wash over you?
- 24:50I let these ones wash over me. I might have some ideas in my
- 24:54head. I'm curious, sure, but not to
- 24:57the point where I let it take away from the movie.
- 25:00I'm here for the ride. It takes me where it takes me.
- 25:03Yeah, I wrestle with this sometimes.
- 25:04We talk about Minority Report and the fact that I anticipated
- 25:08right away that Max Van Sydow is the bad guy.
- 25:11I don't know. You figured that one out, buddy.
- 25:13You're good. And that Colin Farrell was being
- 25:15set up to be the bad guy. And my pickled brain was just
- 25:18like, Nope, not buying it. You have a gift.
- 25:21Well, it's a curse really, means I can't enjoy certain things and
- 25:26this is an example of a movie where I was not at all playing
- 25:30catch up. I just went with everything that
- 25:32was happening. Yeah, I never felt behind and I
- 25:35never felt ahead. No.
- 25:37And that's to me is a better Mark, right?
- 25:39Yes. And I thought he delivers fully
- 25:41because Paul Dano has all that baggage.
- 25:43I'm not fully convinced he is the bad guy, but I'm not
- 25:47convinced he isn't either. He's involved on some level.
- 25:50Gotta be, has to be. Yeah, and I think that makes
- 25:53that character a lot more interesting than what it would
- 25:55be on paper. And Daniel brings that.
- 25:57And the RV thing being completely empty is creepy
- 26:00because why is that intentional? If you are the bad guy, of
- 26:04course you want to make sure that there's nothing to link you
- 26:06to it. But you're 10 years old
- 26:08mentally. And that's the other reveal that
- 26:10happens after this. And we find that out as he's
- 26:12explaining to Jackman. And Jackman's great in this
- 26:15role, in this moment. I think he's fantastic.
- 26:17I don't have a lot of. Jackman movies on my shelf and I
- 26:20don't get jacked, buddy. I'm a little ashamed.
- 26:22Yeah, I'm a little ashamed. I have Wolverine, which I don't
- 26:25even really like. It's not good.
- 26:26It's not Logan's good. Yeah, it's Canadian.
- 26:29The character, yes. Interesting.
- 26:31Actually, Logan, I have. OK, that's a good one.
- 26:33James Mangold. I'd have to watch it again.
- 26:35I saw in theatres and I do own it, so I gotta give it another
- 26:38go. But yeah, this is a role that I
- 26:40haven't really seen him in this type of character, and I'm
- 26:44pretty impressed. He's pretty intense, but
- 26:46rightfully so. I mean, I again, I can't imagine
- 26:49specifically what he's feeling, but I can empathize pretty good.
- 26:53Sure that. Well, if he's old enough to
- 26:57drive a RV, yeah, he's probably old enough to kidnap a kid.
- 27:01Yeah, immediately poking holes in the story.
- 27:03How could he drive? And he just repeats it over and
- 27:05over again. And Phil, I hear what you're.
- 27:06Saying, and that is Jill Inhale's fantastic response.
- 27:10He belongs in retail. That's right.
- 27:11I get it. We're looking at all
- 27:12possibilities. I get it.
- 27:13I need you to calm down. Classic my wife.
- 27:16Was thinking he just doesn't have very interpersonal skills
- 27:19correct and that's probably part of his character.
- 27:22Yeah, and Jake doesn't have a good answer for.
- 27:24Him, he doesn't yell him to his job.
- 27:26He never lost the case. So let's give this guy the
- 27:29benefit of the doubt. What I think is interesting too,
- 27:31and I thought we talked about this with doctors and so forth,
- 27:34is the empathy that is lost. Gyllenhaal presents no support,
- 27:39yeah, or understanding or comforting to anybody in this
- 27:44family. He says I'm going to find them,
- 27:46but that's like the. But I'm not giving you that
- 27:48bedside. Manner.
- 27:49Yeah. And Jackman is so jacked up.
- 27:52Exactly. He's so amped up that I think
- 27:55you could have deflated that or popped that balloon just a
- 27:59little if you were willing to. But the most he gets is I hear
- 28:03you get. It.
- 28:05Let me do my job, let me do my job.
- 28:07But I really like these two actors front to front here.
- 28:09And what makes this job a little more difficult, Phil, is your
- 28:12police captain. Oh yeah.
- 28:14That can make or break the office chemistry.
- 28:18Course the dynamics. All off.
- 28:20I'm going to see how many times I can bring up Bosch in this.
- 28:23OK, but he didn't get his captain.
- 28:25He got along with some people, but Bosh often because of his.
- 28:28Church his own course. Because of his ways, he did
- 28:32ruffle a few feathers with other people who had some other ideas.
- 28:36He's a bit of a lone wolf. I got you.
- 28:38But he had a partner and they got along.
- 28:40Were they the lone wolves then together?
- 28:42Exactly. Just a couple of lone wolves in
- 28:46the town. But unfortunately they only have
- 28:4948 hours to charge him and the captain won't give him an extra
- 28:52day, which coincidentally. Hugh Jackman, Les Mis One More
- 28:58Day is one of the great songs. Ohhh wonderful shirts on their
- 29:01Spotify. That's right.
- 29:02But the job doesn't stop, so he's gonna keep on looking for
- 29:05suspects. In his combative stance with the
- 29:08police captain, he says I've got a list of pedophiles, so if you
- 29:11just stop getting in my way, I'm going to go look.
- 29:13I'm. Gonna go do my job and that's
- 29:14concerning the amount that he gave out and that like mile
- 29:17radius like wow, I hope that's not true and little montage real
- 29:23quick, though not really noteworthy.
- 29:25No, but one is what I thought dead on the floor.
- 29:29Hmm. That was my first impression
- 29:31because we're dealing with possibly murders, mysteries.
- 29:34Dark movie could be. Sure fits, but like me in my
- 29:3720s, just drunk on the floor. That's right, don't mind.
- 29:40Little bit of drool coming out the side of your mouth, no big
- 29:42deal. Yeah, don't worry about.
- 29:44It step over me to get someplace else.
- 29:45Yeah, and this is. What turns out to be a local
- 29:48priest, Gyllenhaal, sees a chord going in an odd direction and
- 29:55goes to move the fridge cause it's not really where it's
- 29:58supposed to be and voila, discovers a hidden room.
- 30:02Without a stairwell, yeah, that it's dangerous.
- 30:05Very. That house would not pass a
- 30:07safety. No.
- 30:08Cars that have to pass safety. But you know what I mean, not to
- 30:11code. When he gets down there, my wife
- 30:13like, how is he going to get back up?
- 30:15Like, don't worry about it, Jake.
- 30:16Trying to figure out the movie. And these are scary moments in
- 30:20these movies, and I find them more scary than the horror
- 30:23movies that we watch. Yeah, Because I don't know
- 30:25what's going to happen. Totally.
- 30:26I know all the tricks now and I know the purpose of it is the
- 30:30kills. Yeah, for that type of movie,
- 30:32that's slasher film. That is what it's all about.
- 30:34For sure. Really on the type of execution,
- 30:36are we doing the chainsaw this week?
- 30:38The blade rotted, lots of options.
- 30:41You have the what was that one in the third one, the harpoon.
- 30:45Harpoon, absolutely. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:46That's a good time. First kill ever in the Jason
- 30:49mask right there. That's true.
- 30:50Check the archives so I'm not scared.
- 30:53It's not like I'm like nestled into my wife's armpit or
- 30:56anything like that. Maybe for a second it did
- 30:59happen, but I appreciate that suspense in these types of
- 31:02movies, and it was justified with our results.
- 31:04Yeah, it turns out there's a big old dead body down there.
- 31:08Been there for at least a few days.
- 31:10Few days to know how that works. President Files doesn't explain
- 31:15that to me, but probably not Skeleton.
- 31:18No, it hasn't been. Decomposed to a certain extent
- 31:21for sure. But enough to ask some questions
- 31:23to the to the priest is why this dead body?
- 31:25And what do you think of the priest answers?
- 31:27Do you buy it? I have no reason to not trust
- 31:29this priest. He's a priest.
- 31:31Well, he's on his child sex. Well, I mean, aren't they all?
- 31:36Just kidding. Yeah.
- 31:38Generally speaking, I didn't quite understand how he died
- 31:41necessarily. Like, is the priest responsible
- 31:43for his death? So from a legal perspective, I
- 31:46was confused, but I believe what he was saying.
- 31:49I just don't know how much time he's doing for this situation.
- 31:53Sure. Yeah.
- 31:54I mean, certainly got the impression he was tied up, Yeah.
- 31:57And left for dead. I guess that's what he wanted
- 31:59because he had sinned. That's my thinking is that this
- 32:01guy shows up and he's got his own issues.
- 32:05I'd say asking for help and that's how he helped.
- 32:08Them. Do you think that's what the guy
- 32:10wanted though? I think that's the question.
- 32:13Or is like this is what you're getting for your sins?
- 32:15Well, you said the guy asked him to help him stop.
- 32:18Well, he. Did after 17 kidnapped or
- 32:21whatever children so I suspect it's in that.
- 32:23Well, that's when he stopped. Yeah, mission accomplished.
- 32:26I'd say the Father did what he needed to do, but what that
- 32:29means is that there is still no evidence for Alex's involvement,
- 32:33which means he's released. The windows closed, that's
- 32:36right. And Jackman and Terrence Howard
- 32:38and the whole families, they're all scouring the forest.
- 32:40And then Jackman finds out. Kellor Keller is his name.
- 32:44It's a weird name. It's an odd.
- 32:45Name. It's like a two last name guy.
- 32:46Yeah, I don't like it. No, I'm out.
- 32:48I'm done. Doesn't make sense so he just
- 32:52runs off and he attacks Alex on the footsteps of.
- 32:55The courthouse? Not a good move.
- 32:58And what does Alex say? Oh, what does he say?
- 33:01He says they didn't cry. Until I left them.
- 33:05I got that right. You got it and I heard it.
- 33:08Yep. You heard it.
- 33:09We all heard it, except nobody else heard it.
- 33:12So that's what he said. He said situation.
- 33:16Absolutely, but it also means as an audience, Alex isn't off.
- 33:20The hook no. Even though there's no evidence,
- 33:22even though the RV is clean, there's some malevolence
- 33:25happening. He knows something.
- 33:26It sounds creepy as shit and certainly implicates him, and
- 33:30that pushes Dover over the edge. Dover, the edge.
- 33:35Dover, the name of the movie when Wahlberg was going to be in
- 33:38it, that's what it was going. To be his first name isn't Ben.
- 33:40That's right. Which leads to Jackman staking
- 33:45him out. Alex Jones and I know you can
- 33:47relate to this scene. Oh yes, absolutely.
- 33:50I've stocked many. Oh no.
- 33:51No, no, not that part. The dog walking parts yes and he
- 33:55does something really weird with the dog and that I think is done
- 34:02to add to the suspicion of his character totally because you
- 34:06don't do that and he doesn't hurt the dog per se.
- 34:09Why don't know we? Didn't really like it, didn't
- 34:12seem very excited about it. Yet Dover goes and fights with
- 34:16Gyllenhaal to say, like, look, he said all these things and
- 34:19they're like, we can't, There's nothing.
- 34:21And he is pissed off at the captain again.
- 34:23Right. Just one more day.
- 34:24It's all asked for you. I told you this would happen.
- 34:26Yeah. And so Jackman takes into his
- 34:28hands. But this is the only part of the
- 34:30movie that I find strange. Credulity is to me that is
- 34:36confrontational to me. Alex goes for this walk, senses
- 34:41or notices or sees Jackman watching.
- 34:43Him pretty obvious. Then holds up the dog in some
- 34:47level of discomfort and in a threatening manner, and then
- 34:53proceeds to walk across the street singing Jingle Bells.
- 34:56Batman Smells Great song by the way.
- 34:58I sung it as a kid. We all have.
- 34:59Hmm. So to me, if Alex is, as we find
- 35:04out later, a little less than involved in this whole thing,
- 35:07that piece tells me more malevolence.
- 35:10That tells me fuck you. That's a taunt.
- 35:13It's a taunt. It's a taunt.
- 35:14I think I'm messing with you and I'm going to show you.
- 35:16I'm going to fucking play with your head by singing the song
- 35:19and I'm going to hold up this dog whom I'm supposed to take
- 35:21care of and I'm basically. Hurting and I see what you're.
- 35:24Saying so, it's kind of manipulating us.
- 35:26I think so. But it's also about Jackman.
- 35:28Now, I don't mind being manipulated.
- 35:29That's movies. But if we're led to believe that
- 35:31he is this innocent, which the movie pays off at the end, he's
- 35:35the innocent. That's what I don't.
- 35:36Like then you don't do these two things.
- 35:38You can't because you can do the other stuff.
- 35:40Yeah, because he's got like, plausible deniability on
- 35:42everything else. I'm in the RV.
- 35:42I like to go for a drive. I like to.
- 35:44But this is a mismatch. When you watch the whole movie
- 35:47now, this scene no longer matches up with a scene later.
- 35:50And that's important to me. I don't like the mismatching.
- 35:52Yes, that's the problem. Now it's not enough to Take Me
- 35:55Out because I don't really didn't hear.
- 35:56Notices are wonderful, like there's enough stuff that's
- 35:58going in it's direction in the right.
- 36:00Way I just figure he's really not.
- 36:02With it and that could be it too, right?
- 36:04It could be easily dismissed, but I just found this is the one
- 36:06moment where I'm a little less than.
- 36:08It could be construed that way and you construed.
- 36:10It that way I definitely construed.
- 36:12Some construction happening here.
- 36:15Totally. And this movie does this a
- 36:17couple times. We're just fades to black.
- 36:19Yeah. So we don't know exactly what
- 36:21happened. Next time jump.
- 36:23Not that guy I know. No, but then it's him and
- 36:26Terrence in the truck driving somewhere with an extra set of
- 36:30clothes, which is good to have in case.
- 36:31You go bag. Yeah, and this was mentioned
- 36:34earlier, almost right near the beginning about this other house
- 36:38grandpas. You could just renovate it.
- 36:40It's too much money. It looks like shit.
- 36:42And he's right. That's a big undertaking.
- 36:44Like that's not livable. No.
- 36:46But fortunately, it has a bathroom.
- 36:48That's right. That's a great place to keep
- 36:50somebody against their will. A prisoner, if you will.
- 36:53So they got Alex? Yeah, got him tied up.
- 36:56Yeah, Jackman gets them. I don't want you.
- 36:58You said they. This is Jackman's deal.
- 37:00They're supposed to say they now.
- 37:01OK, Yeah, well, you're right. Because Terrence has no idea
- 37:04this has happened and he's not on board.
- 37:07With it, he's like George Aronoff and Dave Moss.
- 37:10He's just, he's just there because he listened.
- 37:13Pretty much poor. Guy because when this goes to
- 37:16court, questionable for sure and it's starts out, I don't want to
- 37:21say tame, but there's a progression here, assuming that
- 37:24he'll talk after a few close to the face lay the threat.
- 37:27Out and of course anybody in the right mind I'm talking but is
- 37:31not in his right mind. He beats the shadow, he really
- 37:34does. And the anger and rage.
- 37:36And I think this is an interesting element, which is
- 37:38this sort of religious peaceful guy who says the Lord's Prayer
- 37:425625 times a week, a month or day, whatever.
- 37:46Yeah. And we've already heard a couple
- 37:47of times in the movie alone has the rage and anger and penchant
- 37:53for malice that he can just beat the shit out of another person.
- 37:57Now, that is clearly the love of a child, if you want to call it
- 38:00that, overpowering whatever religious beliefs he may have or
- 38:05it's justified under the circumstances.
- 38:07You can just ask for forgiveness after.
- 38:09If he's Catholic, it's fine. Yeah, yeah, just oops, my bad.
- 38:12Can I get, yeah, can I get a buyback?
- 38:14Seven Hail Marys and you've got a clean slate.
- 38:17That's right. So anyway, I found that to be an
- 38:18interesting character trait. But it's intense.
- 38:20It's very intense. This movie really handles those
- 38:23kind of moments really well. You get the first few shots and
- 38:26certainly see some damage and then you cut away.
- 38:28You know where this is going. That first part we've seen in,
- 38:32like, action movies where people get beat up, that I'm like, OK,
- 38:37it's what we see a little bit later that's really, really
- 38:41intense, powerful stuff. And the more and more I hear you
- 38:43talk about this movie, there's more religious stuff than I may
- 38:46have picked up on. OK.
- 38:48Because the next scene, we were back with the priest.
- 38:50That's right. And I mean, he's going on about
- 38:53something and it's God related. Sure.
- 38:56Trying to justify, well, I think just to try and find a way to
- 39:01explain what you know, it says that there's a war against God
- 39:04happening in the daylight. You know what's going.
- 39:06On sure or he's fighting against it and that's what this guy was
- 39:09he shows up I've killed 17 kids you need to help me the fact
- 39:12that that evil can exist. The religious overtones are
- 39:15there, the war is coming, is what he says.
- 39:17And that obviously ties in later when we've revealed what the
- 39:20real villain of the movie is. And that rationale I think comes
- 39:24comes along pretty naturally. And it matches with this because
- 39:27the fact is it is in the world, it is out there, and this kind
- 39:30of people does exist. We are introduced to another
- 39:41suspect. Yeah, the villains just keep
- 39:44popping up. Gyllenhaal is at this vigil, and
- 39:47he sees a shadowy man. Yeah, with a.
- 39:50Teddy Bear, I don't know if he want to put it down or he's just
- 39:52checking it out. He likes titties.
- 39:54I feel like I've seen him in the same role before.
- 39:57Built for it. I would say he's creepy looking
- 39:59and he's yeah, he fits the role. Good casting in this movie,
- 40:02totally. Generally speaking, and if
- 40:04you're not guilty, probably wouldn't run.
- 40:08We just saw it earlier, if Alex isn't guilty, he wouldn't run.
- 40:11So this is a an echo of that, right?
- 40:13So did they work together? Do they know one another at all?
- 40:16We'll find out, but he gets away.
- 40:18Jakes, he's not winning any track and field events.
- 40:20Nobody gets a look at him enough to get a sketch art, sketch
- 40:24artist involved. Yeah.
- 40:26And obviously propels the movie a little longer.
- 40:28And I think Gyllenhaal, particularly in this section,
- 40:30I've liked throughout the whole movie.
- 40:31But in this section, I think he's really good.
- 40:33This is a much different role from a few weeks ago in Everest.
- 40:36Absolutely not as chill. Yeah, that's a good example, but
- 40:39it's still up there. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 40:41And well for him. But yes, definitely a much
- 40:44chiller environment. Gets a phone call, somebody from
- 40:47Walmart like a Valley Village. I'm just trying to get a sponsor
- 40:50perhaps, but that point, that's all we're given just a little
- 40:54bit of a lead. Very investigative, but we're
- 40:57going to put a pin in that for now.
- 40:58We go back to the captivity, the prisoner we know difference is
- 41:04not fully on board with this. And it's always good to tell
- 41:07your wife everything. It's very important, Phil.
- 41:10So his wife catches wind of what's happening and wants to
- 41:13see. Him catches wind because he
- 41:14told. Him.
- 41:15Yeah, that that would be. Yeah, that's exactly.
- 41:18I don't think not like she just heard it like yeah.
- 41:23And Jack? Word on the street.
- 41:24Is you kidnapped again? Check this.
- 41:26Everyone's talking about water cooler and everything and she's
- 41:30not doing. Well, both the wives are really
- 41:32distraught. Understandably.
- 41:33So Maria Bella, Bella, sorry, is basically a coma all the time on
- 41:38the pills and stuff. And Viola Davis here, I think is
- 41:40really good in a couple of the scenes that she gets.
- 41:42Yeah, yeah. And so she, yeah, she shows up
- 41:45in this shot again, just the framing of that.
- 41:48Oh my. God, his head behind the scene
- 41:50and I thought that we're not going to see it.
- 41:52I was like, oh this is. Wish we classy yeah, I don't
- 41:55want to see Yeah, it's too much for me.
- 41:58Me and my wife both looked. Away the big reveal.
- 42:00It's garish. That's good makeup.
- 42:03Really. I'm just trying to say good
- 42:05things about it because it is quite loaded up for you here.
- 42:09No thanks. Those eyes like came and.
- 42:13See, it's incredible. Just a blood soaked face just
- 42:16looking terrible and watching her react to that.
- 42:19These are good people, you know, good religious, faithful people.
- 42:23And seeing the depravity that these two or one is capable of
- 42:30is like a real punch in the stomach.
- 42:33I'm sure for her, because this isn't just an accident I'm
- 42:36looking at this is somebody did this.
- 42:38In fact, my husband did this and my best friend husband did this.
- 42:44He's involved. And remind me of Jericho on how
- 42:47people change, especially if you remember season 2, they're
- 42:51fighting against the other town. They used to have friendly
- 42:54sports rivalries. They have bake offs together,
- 42:57all these great things between towns and now they're murdering
- 43:00each other like wow, it's. Just it can happen, right?
- 43:03It's self preservation or it's anything that can trigger it.
- 43:08But watching her react to not only Alex's face, but the
- 43:13realities of the circumstance I think are really good.
- 43:16And she's trying to. She tried.
- 43:18She's trying a different approach.
- 43:19Yeah, Softer, softer approach. The other one, Good cop, bad
- 43:22cop, bad cop ain't working. Yeah, because he's not talking.
- 43:25And that was a little bit frustrating.
- 43:27That's, I think the point. I know what they are, Jackman.
- 43:30And that, like, just knocks. I don't want to see it anymore,
- 43:33let alone I don't want you to feel it anymore.
- 43:35Get it? And she unties his hands.
- 43:38And just when you think maybe this guy has nothing to do with
- 43:40anything, he acts like he does. He goes after her, cuts her,
- 43:44cuts him, tries to get out the windows.
- 43:46Like, OK, we're back at square 1 again here.
- 43:50Geez. Jackman uses it as validation
- 43:53and affirmation. OK, that's it.
- 43:56He still isn't talking. First excuse, he tries to run
- 43:58away and he attacked me. He's capable of violence,
- 44:01therefore I'm on the right. Thus the wooden shower is born.
- 44:05Oh my God, that's rough. Totally rough, you imagine?
- 44:09Well, that's what I don't. Quite get about Alex, like
- 44:13understand these 10 year old mentally, but to go through that
- 44:17pain and that suffering and this is torture at this point
- 44:21totally. I would say with the hot cold
- 44:22water, there's no argument about that.
- 44:25Maybe there is. I think they lose it though.
- 44:28I think he would still have the mental capacity to say I do know
- 44:32something like if you just protecting his ants by not
- 44:36because he was with the kids, he has information and he's not
- 44:40saying anything. But why is he not saying
- 44:43anything? I don't know.
- 44:44It's not really. Explained.
- 44:46I think he's genuinely is incapable because she talks
- 44:49about later in her explanation, the ants explanation that he's
- 44:53had fewer and fewer words ever since right?
- 44:55Like he's just completely shut down the world in part of what
- 44:58he's experienced from she's not helping from it.
- 45:01No, definitely. Not a good role model.
- 45:03From the young age, right? So I think it is legitimate, but
- 45:06you don't know that. So all you have is this
- 45:08frustration, this anger, this rage and frankly this suspicion
- 45:12that he's the bad guy because the movie is presented it that
- 45:14way. And we like Jackman, we like
- 45:16Gyllenhaal, even if we don't like the Kellers actions like
- 45:20demeanor or whatever. You can't really argue with.
- 45:23You could certainly justify it by saying, yeah, but I mean,
- 45:26these kids, I mean, like, of course you're going to be at
- 45:28your worst when this happens. But this is.
- 45:32It's definitely an extremity that is unbelievable, and the
- 45:35fact that this sort of righteous person can have that level of
- 45:38depravity is telling and I think makes for a compelling
- 45:42character. Yeah, that's the main crux of
- 45:44the film, is that character. Absolutely.
- 45:46And the fallout of this is Viola Davis, she basically says.
- 45:52Whatever happens, happens. Yeah, we're not going to help
- 45:55him, but we're also not going to stop him.
- 45:57That's a talk about on the fence.
- 45:59Yeah, that's what I'd be doing. It's a quiet exit.
- 46:01Yeah, right. I don't want to be a part of
- 46:03this, but I also want the end result that he does.
- 46:07Yeah. That moral ambiguity is not
- 46:09something we really saw last week.
- 46:10I'm certain this is the way. Right?
- 46:12That's Paula's way in deterrence.
- 46:15This one is. I don't know but I can't live
- 46:19like this so I need an answer and if this is how I get it then
- 46:22I have to turn a blind eye to it these.
- 46:23Characters are at different tiers, of course, of what
- 46:26they're willing to do, and Jackman's wife is on the other
- 46:29end of things. I'm just comatose, not doing
- 46:31anything. And these two are sort of in the
- 46:35middle. Totally.
- 46:35Yeah. That's the dynamic we have here.
- 46:37Yeah, the next time we see Maria Bello is when Bob Oht Bob Yeah
- 46:44makes a little. Visit that I was confused about.
- 46:46I didn't understand what he was doing.
- 46:48OK, he was entering both the homes, but that's all we see.
- 46:52There's no real. Yeah, one of the daughters is in
- 46:54there in the bathtub and there's some misdirection there.
- 46:56She's gone, but she's just pissed off.
- 46:59And don't let tell me when you're leaving next.
- 47:01Time. Good point.
- 47:02I think that's what happened. Yeah, You better be clear.
- 47:05Lock those God damn doors. But I mean, I haven't locked my
- 47:08door and really well, just when I go to sleep.
- 47:11And even then, sometimes not. I'm in Vanier.
- 47:13So they're OHS locked. Yeah.
- 47:15Yeah. Boarded up.
- 47:16Oh yeah. My garage has been broken into
- 47:17twice. Oh my gosh.
- 47:18It's a lot of tools I lost. Luckily I don't use them, so it
- 47:22worked OK. Jackman would on Alex, but so I
- 47:26was a little bit confused and didn't make sense to me.
- 47:28Obviously I figured it out. My wife already knew.
- 47:32I'm sure you did too. And again, maybe it's just an
- 47:34oversight by me, but if I not figuring things out, I'm pretty
- 47:39happy with the film because I don't want to know.
- 47:42Yeah, which is why I felt terrible for you for six cents.
- 47:46You never want to know that that might be Alex and might be Bob.
- 47:50It could be somebody else. I never thought who will end up
- 47:52being was the person. Yeah.
- 47:53It's fun. Yeah.
- 47:54It's kind of obvious now looking back.
- 47:56Oh, yeah. Yeah, this is that person, I
- 47:58think at some point. The movie wants us to think it
- 48:00could be Jackman. That's right.
- 48:02I don't know that I really fully buy that, or even that the movie
- 48:04is fully doing that, but it does drop a couple.
- 48:06Of like, he's up to something. Yes.
- 48:08So Jake's following him around. I would say probably the worst
- 48:11tale stuff. Very possible.
- 48:13Yeah, I've seen, I get a lot of shows.
- 48:15You're not doing a very good job.
- 48:16You're at a stop sign. Yeah, just pull over.
- 48:18Just pull over. What are we doing?
- 48:19Here, round the corner it doesn't matter, you still have
- 48:21the view. That's terrible movie that yeah,
- 48:25you have this big truck obviously giving away his.
- 48:28And all he says is go around. You know who isn't hearing that?
- 48:31The truck behind you hired give a emotion.
- 48:34I called the driver said I heard him say it.
- 48:37Go ahead, go. Around clear This is a reveal
- 48:40where we find out. At least this is what he tells
- 48:42us, that he hasn't had a drink in 9 1/2 years.
- 48:46This is a pretty good excuse. If you want 1, you need one.
- 48:49If you're looking for one. Hence why he didn't go directly
- 48:52into the liquor store and came out, because that's adding
- 48:55question marks. Like, are you going to the
- 48:58woods? Did you bury somebody?
- 48:59So yeah, again, it's some misdirection.
- 49:01I love it. It's good because it's not
- 49:03manipulating us. We're seeing the same thing Jake
- 49:06is seeing. There's no mismatch here.
- 49:07We're on the same page. His explanation checks out.
- 49:11We know it's bullshit, I think. I mean, I know it's bullshit,
- 49:13but the fact that he can come up with it that fast and he does it
- 49:16two or three more times in the movie where he's able just to
- 49:19think on his feet, play the game and manipulate himself in or out
- 49:23of a situation. And this is the first example of
- 49:25that. And I find it totally plausible.
- 49:27Like you're saying, even though I know it's bullshit, I'm
- 49:29impressed at the way in which he's slinging the bullshit.
- 49:32And very soon after, he's at his grandpa's house and here comes
- 49:38Jake. Yeah, and he.
- 49:40What's better? I got it.
- 49:41You already know I'm a drinker because we've established now
- 49:44I'm just drinking on the floor. I don't want my wife to see me.
- 49:47Yeah, that's plausible. Totally reasonable.
- 49:49Now, a little bit of contrivance.
- 49:50He gets close to the bathroom and he gets a phone call.
- 49:53But that happens, yes, there's no reveal there, as expected.
- 49:58However, that is quite an important phone call because
- 50:00there's a Bob sighting. At the Value Village.
- 50:03Walmart, whatever you want to call it.
- 50:04Sure. And he gets there soon enough
- 50:06where he can tail him. Yeah.
- 50:08And tracks him down to his homestead.
- 50:12And this guy does not do himself any favors.
- 50:14No, at the door. He is not trained for this
- 50:17situation whatsoever. Definitely one of the creepier
- 50:21performances I've seen in a while.
- 50:23I. Mean there's no logical answer
- 50:25for the questions anyway, so it's not like he can get out of
- 50:27it. Really.
- 50:28No. That you have any kids?
- 50:29No. You bought kids clothing.
- 50:30Yeah, like whoops by mistake. I mean, you could try a little
- 50:34bit harder. Sure.
- 50:34He's no Dover coming up with these quick witted responses.
- 50:38He's not Alex, a 10 year old, but I get the impression he's in
- 50:41that same, yeah, arrested state. Of young 1012 like clearly not.
- 50:48He's got things going on. Sure, but he's not able to
- 50:50communicate right? He's obviously off on his own.
- 50:53Yeah, and then we get a quite interesting scene here, Phil,
- 50:56that I was not expecting and it almost put me above the weird.
- 51:00OK Echelon, if that's the right term, probably not of where I
- 51:04want movies to go. And that's crossing the line.
- 51:07You're saying it didn't intrigued by it, but the snakes.
- 51:10OK, opening. I don't like snakes.
- 51:12You know that. People often compare me to
- 51:14Indiana Jones, MacGyver, all the greats.
- 51:17Buddy don't like snakes, and he doesn't mind Jake.
- 51:21He's just opening up all these containers.
- 51:22What I think it was funny about that scene.
- 51:24It's the only thing I think is funny about that scene because
- 51:27it's really traumatic otherwise. I didn't find anything funny,
- 51:29but what? Is it Jake being surprised three
- 51:32crates in a row? That's more snakes.
- 51:35He jumps back and he opens next and he jumps back.
- 51:38Dude, snakes are just makes me chuckle.
- 51:39It never gets easier. And I'll tell you another thing
- 51:42that may be part of why the snakes aren't everyone's
- 51:46favorite. Hmm.
- 51:47That's what happened at the Garden of Eden, buddy.
- 51:49OHS Snake enters the Garden of Eden, ruins it for everybody.
- 51:53That's true. There's some connective tissues.
- 51:54Connective tissue, you're welcome.
- 51:56But there are some garments and there's some blood.
- 51:59Yes, and pigs head in the sink. There we go.
- 52:02It's a lot of creep. It's a lot of weird stuff.
- 52:04Another suspect that isn't clearly the guy.
- 52:08But it could be the guy. Yeah, totally plausible.
- 52:11If this was the guy, it would make complete sense.
- 52:14You spent the half the movie thinking it's Alex, we found the
- 52:16next half, it's this guy, and now you have to pin it on him in
- 52:19like a traditional movie. That could very well be the plot
- 52:22of this movie. Or red herring.
- 52:24Or red herring. I'm looking at my watch though,
- 52:27like I don't think this is the guy.
- 52:28Yeah, I wonder actually have a question about that.
- 52:30When we're watching these types of movies, how often if at all
- 52:33do you look at your watch and or wiggle the mouse or whatever
- 52:38else to reveal how much is left? Because you talk about you don't
- 52:41want to figure out the movie, you don't want to know anything,
- 52:43you want to see it as clean as possible.
- 52:45And I'm guilty of this, too. But I meant, like, for your
- 52:47purposes, you say all these things, but if you're engaged in
- 52:51a movie and it's wrapping up to, let's say, Bob is getting
- 52:55arrested. Yeah, they look at you and then
- 52:57you look and go an hour. Yeah.
- 52:58Like, no, like, OK, well, you're not spoiling anything, but you
- 53:02are. But you are.
- 53:03So do you turn off or do you sometimes play the game with
- 53:07your own, like, oh, shit. Like 45 minutes?
- 53:09I guess it's not this. I thought about it in this
- 53:12movie. I'm like, I wonder where we are
- 53:14at this movie time wise. But I didn't look because I
- 53:17didn't want to know. And sometimes I do want to know
- 53:20because the movie doesn't have me and you know me.
- 53:23Long movies are a struggle for me.
- 53:24And Bill Nov is a slow burn guy. Yeah, it's incredible.
- 53:28I struggle with Dune, Yeah. Arrival actually ended up really
- 53:31liking YEAH, but this one I had no issues with.
- 53:34The runner you enjoyed as well. You talked about it.
- 53:37You know, we'll talk about it then.
- 53:39I have issues with Blade Runner for pacing do but this one, the
- 53:42little things like you mentioned, the little shots of
- 53:45the toy, we don't need to do any of these things.
- 53:48These are the things that make his movie longer, but these are
- 53:51all choices that he likes to do, and in a lot of cases, they pay
- 53:55off, which is why he's such a good filmmaker.
- 53:57Yeah, but I'm completely happy with this 2 1/2 hour movie.
- 54:01Fantastic. Surprisingly, I love it.
- 54:04Maybe I will watch Oppenheimer. He has the crates, the snakes,
- 54:13the whole thing. Probable cause.
- 54:15That's right. Yeah, absolutely.
- 54:17They arrest him. They bring him in interrogation.
- 54:202.0. But in the interim, they get to
- 54:23show the pictures of the clothes.
- 54:26Yeah. And I love this scene.
- 54:28It's painful to watch, but. Yeah, having Jackman out in the
- 54:31hallway while Howard's doing his thing, his revelation that she's
- 54:37not coming. His wife can't even approach the
- 54:40moment at this time and watching them leave and walk past him
- 54:44with almost no acknowledgement either, that relationship would
- 54:47completely. It's.
- 54:48It's strange destroyed if not. And then Jackman facing
- 54:53Gyllenhaal going through 1 by 1. Those photos, fucking
- 54:56incredible. Yeah, and when he sees the sock,
- 54:59that performance right then and there.
- 55:01I've struggled with this, as you know, in in many movies, like
- 55:03when there's such a big emotional moments that it's
- 55:07almost impossible for an actor to get to that.
- 55:09Level he does and I was impressed.
- 55:12I agree. And what he has is the line
- 55:14afterwards, which I love, which is you wasted time lashing out
- 55:20you. It's not Jake's fault you let
- 55:22this happen. I don't know about that.
- 55:25Well, from from his perspective, perspective you let Alex.
- 55:28Leave, but he has them, so I mean that's not loose.
- 55:31But he still doesn't know where his kid is and it's been 6 days
- 55:34or whatever else. I love Line, and I love that
- 55:36because of the obsessive nature of Gyllenhaal's character so
- 55:40far. That's going to eat at.
- 55:42Him. I think I know why he said it,
- 55:45but Jackman's character thought it was Alex anyway.
- 55:48You're admitting that you're wrong yourself, you know, Like
- 55:51you're wrong too then. So you're both wrong.
- 55:53Yeah, I think it's more of you waited this long to find this
- 55:56guy and if you were spending less time following me into.
- 55:59Yeah, I suppose. Into confectionery stores or
- 56:02whatever an hour. Make a difference, I guess in
- 56:05these things they could. But anyway, in the end it leaves
- 56:08Jackman empty and he goes back to the house where he's got Alex
- 56:14and he just screams and yells like tell me anything something
- 56:19you have to. And he's fucking with the hot
- 56:21scolding water. Does he finally say something
- 56:24here? Mazes.
- 56:25That's right, yes. Finally said something.
- 56:28God. He also says something will get
- 56:31to you. And I think at that point
- 56:34Jackman thinks it's the Ant. I'll fuck with the Ant and that
- 56:37will trigger him. The move.
- 56:40That's the that's the move. So yeah, this maze thing starts
- 56:44to become a thing. Things are finally starting to
- 56:48connect a little. Bit Bob's got the book, but also
- 56:50all the walls are mazes. Yeah, and Speaking of Bob, and
- 56:53this has happened in Bosh, got a hold of the firearm.
- 56:56Ohhhhh. Yeah, and you'll appreciate this
- 57:00because it's all on screen. Yeah.
- 57:01Yeah. Blows his own brains out.
- 57:03Yeah. Looks great.
- 57:04And we're left with nothing except for the base.
- 57:07Yeah, I don't know what Maze is. I don't know what I'm doing with
- 57:10that. Yeah, it keeps saying he's been
- 57:11drawing it for three hours and Gyllenhaal just kind of losing.
- 57:14His mind frustrated. Yeah.
- 57:16And then after that happens, he goes back and he's still more
- 57:19frustrated. He smashes the shit out of his
- 57:21keyboard and then he plays with the little RV toy.
- 57:25And here's the ha ha moment. And here's the here it is.
- 57:27And he sees the picture of the medallion.
- 57:30Yeah, I'd call him Medallion. On the priest.
- 57:33On the dead body. Dead body.
- 57:34On the dead body. Phillip that was in the basement
- 57:36at the priest house. Yes, but I certainly didn't pay
- 57:39any attention to the medallion on the guy in the basement of
- 57:42the priest house. Oh heavens no, you wouldn't be a
- 57:45good investigator. No, we all know that it's a
- 57:47trick of the movie that we get to be on everybody's journey in
- 57:52a different way. And the ability of the movie to
- 57:55do that, I think is really commendable because I find
- 57:58myself completely engaged when Gyllenhaal's on the screen.
- 58:00OHS that track? Yeah, I love that track.
- 58:03And then I'm equally on the same plane with Jackman on his track.
- 58:07So it's really great storytelling.
- 58:09And if you can throw in a little blood, you know, head blowing
- 58:12up. I'm.
- 58:12OK with that too. Now, in contrast to that,
- 58:17Speaking of Jackman's track as it were, he decides a different
- 58:20approach based on the conversation with Alex.
- 58:22And he goes to chat with Aunt Holly and Holly, and he's trying
- 58:28to play good cop, if you will. Yeah, I mean, that's the right
- 58:32play. It helps as a misdirect for
- 58:34sure, because I have no idea what's happening and it softens
- 58:39him up a little bit. But you know that because of the
- 58:42last hour and a half of the movie, he is not a, for lack of
- 58:46a better term, a good guy. So there's an angle to whatever
- 58:49he's doing. Hmm.
- 58:51And he's trying to fish now. I feel like I'm an amazed,
- 58:54right? He's trying to catch her in some
- 58:57connection to what happens with Alex.
- 59:00But we didn't win this round. Leaves empty handed.
- 59:02Yeah, but he gets to hear the story, which obviously we as an
- 59:05audience is more important about Alex and her kid that died of
- 59:09cancer. I didn't pick that up at the
- 59:11time, obviously, but that is the motivation.
- 59:14Absolutely, she establishes. You know, very devout Christian
- 59:17family and that Alex had an accident with a snake earlier.
- 59:21And then since then, he's gotten progressively worse.
- 59:23So there might have been some venom in there, who's to say?
- 59:26But there is some connection to what happened to Alex and why.
- 59:30And here's another example of this undercurrent underneath it.
- 59:32But for now, we just know her as I had a rough life, this kid,
- 59:36and I'm trying my best. I picked up Alex.
- 59:38I'm trying. To trying to get by.
- 59:39Yeah, and I think she's really good in this movie.
- 59:42And the mystery deepens at this point because we find out the
- 59:45blood that was on the clothes was pigs blood.
- 59:47That's right. It makes sense.
- 59:48We saw pigs head, yes. I don't know if it makes sense,
- 59:52but it makes sense. Yeah, which kind of confirms Bob
- 59:56may not be the guy. Yeah, after all, we can't really
- 59:58question. Him No, that's right, didn't
- 1:00:00take, but they do allude to the fact that he feels like it was
- 1:00:05play acting. There's no connection, but
- 1:00:08there's clearly something off if you've got in the backyard child
- 1:00:12sized mannequins being buried. And then with Gyllenhaal, he
- 1:00:16looks at his notepad and remembers about the window being
- 1:00:19open and puts two and two together and realizes, yeah, Bob
- 1:00:23is stolen. The clothes and me and Jake are
- 1:00:25on the same page. I think the whole movie is
- 1:00:27exceptionally well laid out that way.
- 1:00:29You start asking the questions when something is off and like,
- 1:00:34yeah, like The Sixth Sense, right?
- 1:00:35Like, why is nobody talking to this guy?
- 1:00:37This feels weird. Why OHT?
- 1:00:39Because he's this dead and this. I never felt any of that.
- 1:00:42And so this moment where Jake gets the aha, I get the AHA.
- 1:00:46And I really love that feeling. I.
- 1:00:48Don't want to be ahead, I don't want to be behind.
- 1:00:50Maybe like a millisecond or two, but not more than a minute.
- 1:00:53Yeah, There are movies where it's like these clues are there
- 1:00:57for you as an audience member. And I don't want the clues.
- 1:01:00I want to be taking on the journey.
- 1:01:02Yeah. I want to be Jake.
- 1:01:04Yeah, just let me follow him and his story.
- 1:01:07I don't necessarily dislike it. Movies like usual suspects have
- 1:01:10that. Oh, you rewatch it and or the
- 1:01:116th Sense and there's other oh, you get to play with it, but
- 1:01:14just take me on the journey. And I think this movie does that
- 1:01:16exceptionally well. And after that we've
- 1:01:20established, OK, Alex maybe isn't the guy and maybe Bob
- 1:01:24isn't the guy, but this has been going on for a long time.
- 1:01:27And what is up with these girls anyway?
- 1:01:29Can't find the guy? Find the guy.
- 1:01:31And luckily one of the girls, Joy comes back.
- 1:01:34Did that took you by surprise? Yes, we got lucky there.
- 1:01:37That's a big one. It's a big one.
- 1:01:39They show it like how it happened.
- 1:01:41It's a bit of a tough sell. You think the culprit is pretty
- 1:01:46good at this by now? Like they've been doing it 17.
- 1:01:49Yeah. Long time to mess up like that,
- 1:01:52to let that kid get away, but because this movie is done
- 1:01:55everything else so darn well and it's really the only thing that
- 1:02:00can really get us to the next scene, Yeah, kind of has to
- 1:02:03happen so. Sure, I love Septet, I love
- 1:02:06Jackman in this moment because of the same level of intensity,
- 1:02:09he now has a reason of hope. He's been so defeated.
- 1:02:13The last time we saw him, he was he's hunched over in the
- 1:02:15bathroom yelling at Alex doesn't know what to do is crying like
- 1:02:19he's. Too tired to even torture the
- 1:02:21guy at that point. That's out of energy, beat up,
- 1:02:23right, physically, emotionally. So the fact that he can be
- 1:02:28brought back to life a little bit with this news, Oh my God,
- 1:02:32joy. But she's gone through so much.
- 1:02:35I love that Doctor is just like, no, we don't have time for this.
- 1:02:37You can't do it. You can't do it but.
- 1:02:39Get calls, buddy. And then her revelation that you
- 1:02:42were there. Yeah, and.
- 1:02:45What and then just bolts out. I love where this movie is at
- 1:02:49right now. Like I said, I'm totally locked
- 1:02:50in. It's.
- 1:02:51Well played. Then Jake shows up at the
- 1:02:52hospital, not in time to know exactly, unfortunately, where
- 1:02:57Jackman's going. Yes, he tries to follow him,
- 1:03:00loses the tail. He's not going to tailing that
- 1:03:03we've established a couple times in.
- 1:03:04This movie but I love the misdirection so much.
- 1:03:08Like if you remember the Silence of the Lambs or even The
- 1:03:10Fugitive. Oh, you think he's getting
- 1:03:12arrested and it's just a guy pushing drugs upstairs?
- 1:03:15That's right. And Silence of the Lambs.
- 1:03:17We've got the FBI, Scott Glenn's ready to break into the door,
- 1:03:20and Clarice is just bringing on bells.
- 1:03:22And it turns out she's at the van and no one else is prepared.
- 1:03:26That's the best scene in that movie.
- 1:03:27Totally. And so the way that this
- 1:03:29unfolds, Jake, I know where you're going and he bolts to.
- 1:03:34Grandpa's House. To see Alex and Jackman races
- 1:03:38over to the Ant, Hmm. And the way that plays out, I
- 1:03:41just love. And so he's got a toolbox and
- 1:03:43he's full of cock sureness, like he is the guy who knows and I
- 1:03:47will save and protect and immediately gets hoodwinked.
- 1:03:52Did you? Realize that there was a gun.
- 1:03:55No. Yeah.
- 1:03:56OK. Good.
- 1:03:56Me neither. She burned her hand.
- 1:03:58I guess we should have figured something wasn't quite right.
- 1:04:00Like, how many years have you been boiling water?
- 1:04:03She's getting sloppy. Sure.
- 1:04:05I think, again, that she's never been presented as anything other
- 1:04:07than just the Ant, so I have no reason to question it.
- 1:04:10Well, that's good. And again, the camera doesn't
- 1:04:12play the trick because any other movies, Not any other movies,
- 1:04:15but weaker filmakers that trust an audience less.
- 1:04:18Hmm, will show you. Or tell you now a brief little.
- 1:04:23Shot, Why are we cutting to this?
- 1:04:25You're forcing me to look at her wrist.
- 1:04:26You're forcing me into a close up of OK, so something's up with
- 1:04:30the wrist. I don't want to know that.
- 1:04:32That's right. Want to be very subtle?
- 1:04:33So I'm watching it. Oh shit, I didn't know that.
- 1:04:36Even though I had seen the movie 13 years ago, I didn't expect it
- 1:04:39again. I love when you can watch a
- 1:04:41movie like this and forget everything to the point where
- 1:04:44it's like the first time again. Yeah, these movies isn't easy to
- 1:04:47do that. Totally.
- 1:04:48These got types of reveals. And she keeps a big two liter
- 1:04:52bottle of RC Cola in the fridge. Didn't have a label on it.
- 1:04:55But I'm going to get a little shout out to RC Got, you know,
- 1:04:58this father sponsored by RC. Cola might have been a little
- 1:05:01late on that. And yeah, he's in trouble.
- 1:05:04If there is a moment in the movie where I'm a little
- 1:05:07disappointed, and that is the problem with these types of
- 1:05:09movies is the playoffs almost can never live up to what I want
- 1:05:13them. To be to tall order.
- 1:05:15Yeah. So for her to have so much
- 1:05:18exposition, OHT, Alex, there's so many names.
- 1:05:21We took him. We took Bob.
- 1:05:22This is the James Bond moment a little bit, explaining all the
- 1:05:25things I've done to you, and I haven't killed you yet.
- 1:05:28And yeah, this woman at least is presented as a relatively old
- 1:05:32and fairly frail woman. And Jackman is Wolverine.
- 1:05:37He was at some point maybe make a move.
- 1:05:41But that's fine. It's not your prerogative.
- 1:05:43But if this scene goes on a little too long, a little too
- 1:05:45much explanation, and it's the one moment where I think Jackman
- 1:05:48is maybe overplaying when she says drink it and he approaches
- 1:05:53it with such vigor and vitality. That's right.
- 1:05:57Maybe it's maybe that's what he's doing.
- 1:05:59There you go. But the way in which he grabs it
- 1:06:01by both hands and it's just a touch to show high pitched,
- 1:06:06that's the only issue I have. That's OK.
- 1:06:08And he does it twice. It's sexy, college babes.
- 1:06:11Delicious. And then the car comes full
- 1:06:13circle with the Trans Am. Yes, see, I thought it was a
- 1:06:17Camaro. No.
- 1:06:19OK, come on. That's your card, right?
- 1:06:21Yeah. And as this all happening, she
- 1:06:23talks about how what she's doing is waging war against God.
- 1:06:27And that's really the full picture of what's happening.
- 1:06:30The last puzzle piece of the whole thing.
- 1:06:32You suffer. Yes, that's just the whole point
- 1:06:34is I do these things. So you become unreligious.
- 1:06:38Yeah, basically how God would allow you to through this.
- 1:06:42I was devout and God took my child and therefore I will take
- 1:06:46children. It's good for the.
- 1:06:47Goose to show you that God does not exist, and we talked about
- 1:06:52this in the End of the affair, which you probably do not.
- 1:06:55Remember a little hazy buddy? There's an affair and it ended.
- 1:06:59It's phenomenal. It's a letter of hate to God.
- 1:07:01He's writing a letter to God. Basically, leave me alone.
- 1:07:04Took this thing away. From Don't spoil it for me.
- 1:07:07It's an incredible movie. Neil Jordan, Julianne Moore, Ray
- 1:07:09Fines in 99 movie strong year. So even though that last little
- 1:07:13bit I'm like this drags on, whatever the rationale for doing
- 1:07:17it, I think is incredibly dark and like just dark.
- 1:07:23It makes sense though. Totally checks out.
- 1:07:25Turns people into demons, she says.
- 1:07:27Right. We've watched this whole movie,
- 1:07:29Jackman go from the beginning of the.
- 1:07:31Movie nice guy, protect your family.
- 1:07:32Protect your family, say your prayers, and we're going to do
- 1:07:35this thing to hot and cold torture, beating a man to a
- 1:07:38bloody pulp and having no remorse for it.
- 1:07:42That's what taking a child does. She is victorious.
- 1:07:45Whether she lives or dies or the kid lives or dies, she's won the
- 1:07:48game. She has won the game because he
- 1:07:50is completely corrupted and that is a powerful message and a dark
- 1:07:54one to end the movie on it. I love it.
- 1:07:56Speaking of dark, she sticks them in a hole.
- 1:07:58That's right. Very dark.
- 1:07:59Yes. And finds a whistle.
- 1:08:00Yes, put a pin in that. OK, We haven't put pins in
- 1:08:03anything. For a while, yeah, pinned
- 1:08:04earlier did. I don't think ever on pinned
- 1:08:06actually check the pins. And the one smart thing that
- 1:08:10Captain has done is he tells Jake, and he doesn't even mean
- 1:08:14to be smart, but you have to go visit Holly Jones, let her know,
- 1:08:17get her caught up. And here we have the Tell the
- 1:08:21Oreo moments, if you will. He sees the maze in Halley's
- 1:08:24house on her husband, who left five years ago.
- 1:08:27It's all connected now. This to me, is a little bit
- 1:08:32easy, wraps up a little bit quick, walks in, shoot each
- 1:08:36other. I think it's shot really well,
- 1:08:38shot twice. Yeah.
- 1:08:39I wasn't sure where Jake got shot, but the next few minutes I
- 1:08:43thought was an extra level of adrenaline.
- 1:08:46I wasn't expecting this race to the hospital.
- 1:08:49They don't have to do this scene, but they play it out.
- 1:08:52It's pretty long, too. Yeah.
- 1:08:54Like, it takes a while to get that hospital and it shot great.
- 1:08:57But his body language, his reaction almost passing out and
- 1:09:02accentuated by the fact. That the camera is looking
- 1:09:04through the windshield. Yeah.
- 1:09:06We are with Jake in such cool ways throughout this movie, so
- 1:09:10that the danger and the drama is there.
- 1:09:12He's racing through. And I love also that it
- 1:09:15dissolves to black when he gets to the hospital because it's
- 1:09:19like, we don't need to see anything after that.
- 1:09:21Jake arrives, saves the kid, missions accomplished.
- 1:09:24Do you not want any sort? Of time to think the kid makes
- 1:09:28it or not, no. No, I don't think at this point
- 1:09:31it matters to me. Getting to the hospital tells me
- 1:09:34everything's going to be. OK, I'm not sure what kind of
- 1:09:36drugs these kids have been under.
- 1:09:38We don't know the recuperation process.
- 1:09:40So great that they survived. Not very chatty though.
- 1:09:43They're pretty. Traumatized.
- 1:09:45I imagine so and Jakes recovering gun.
- 1:09:48He's going to be fine, too. That's important as well.
- 1:09:50Yeah, you get your happy. Ending.
- 1:09:51Yeah. I mean, in a movie like this, I
- 1:09:54want that. Generally speaking, I do.
- 1:09:56And I know I'm not alone in that.
- 1:09:58We've been through a lot. So I think it's a reward for us
- 1:10:014 to end relatively well. OK, My opinion.
- 1:10:04I don't think this ends well at all.
- 1:10:06Are you talking about the ambiguous?
- 1:10:08No, I mean that too. But I think ultimately everybody
- 1:10:11is so traumatized and destroyed that nobody is ever going to be
- 1:10:15well again. I do have actually a point to
- 1:10:17bring up with that because we have Alex Jones, who's reunited
- 1:10:20with the woman that was in this scene long time ago, lost your
- 1:10:25kit, 26 year old, never found her, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:10:27That kid has been tortured, Yeah.
- 1:10:31Not to mention all the other stuff he's been through to why
- 1:10:34he's not talking in the 1st place.
- 1:10:36And I don't think they do that character justice.
- 1:10:39No. At all.
- 1:10:40Like I mean. He'll be fine, don't worry
- 1:10:42about. Him, I don't think he's going to
- 1:10:43be fine as the point, but the fact they're reunited just means
- 1:10:46like. Yay.
- 1:10:48Yeah, well, like the mom is probably happy, but Alex,
- 1:10:51certainly. Isn't once she sees the state of
- 1:10:53him, she may not be. This might sound dark, but she's
- 1:10:55probably better off without and then that doesn't sound.
- 1:10:58Good, sounds like a happy ending though right?
- 1:10:59No and Gyllenhaal, he solved another case.
- 1:11:02I don't think he's any better off after having what seen what
- 1:11:05he's seen. Would be fine.
- 1:11:06The kids, same. That relationship between Joy
- 1:11:09and Anna and the parents and each other, that's broken,
- 1:11:12that's destroyed. Yeah, that's a good point.
- 1:11:14So that's and Keller is missing. And at this point, we don't know
- 1:11:17what's up, but he's missing, which means Maria Bello and her
- 1:11:20family is never going to be the same, she says.
- 1:11:23He's never contacted me, and then if he does come up, he's
- 1:11:26going to jail for having done what he did to Alex.
- 1:11:28So Jacob agrees, regardless of the ambiguity of what happens
- 1:11:31next. This is such a, to me, a very
- 1:11:33dark ending. It feels really comforting to
- 1:11:36me. Now that you mentioned it, it's
- 1:11:39not so happy. I mean, it would be worse if the
- 1:11:42kids weren't found, but they'll never be the same again.
- 1:11:45Yeah, that's a good point. I mean, they're not dead, right?
- 1:11:47So that's obviously something in the pro column.
- 1:11:49Yeah, but there's a lot of cons. There's a lot of cons happening
- 1:11:51and then obviously that is furthered by Gyllenhaal going
- 1:11:56back to the house. It's frozen ground now, which
- 1:12:00means eventually Jackman would be found because they will
- 1:12:04excavate the whole. That's not going to be for
- 1:12:06months, so he will. Be dead in that set of
- 1:12:08circumstances, yes. So we have Jake standing looking
- 1:12:13around and I didn't even hear the.
- 1:12:16Whistle. Oh, I heard the.
- 1:12:17Whistle. The first time I've been here
- 1:12:18for it though. OK.
- 1:12:19I married a referee. So there you go.
- 1:12:21You're right in that world. Yeah.
- 1:12:23I didn't hear it at 1st and then eventually it got a little
- 1:12:25louder. Well played.
- 1:12:27Where it is faint enough and you hear it a little bit more.
- 1:12:30Now, I don't know what you think.
- 1:12:32I'll ask you, but I never really had a doubt that he would find
- 1:12:36him. Oh, really?
- 1:12:38Here's the whistle. You'll figure it out OK.
- 1:12:40I think you're absolutely does not, I think.
- 1:12:42You'll get closer and closer and closer and he's smart enough to
- 1:12:45realize, ohhh, here's a car, maybe could be something
- 1:12:48underneath the car and then he just has to lift the wood and
- 1:12:51there is it is definitely not like Inception, like, oh, I
- 1:12:53don't know. OK, I don't think he does.
- 1:12:56Oh, interesting. Even if he figures that part
- 1:12:59out, he managed to track it down.
- 1:13:00There's no car key. You got to move the car, you got
- 1:13:02to do this. I don't think you put all that
- 1:13:03together in the time it takes because he says you might get 24
- 1:13:06hours if you give yourself a tourniquet. 15 minutes.
- 1:13:09You can find them in 15. OK.
- 1:13:11Yeah. Well, we'll see.
- 1:13:12The keys are probably in the car, like why take them out for
- 1:13:15what her purpose is for that car and I just push.
- 1:13:18It's probably a neutral. Yeah, don't worry about it.
- 1:13:20There you go. There.
- 1:13:21Is pull them out. David, does this movie stay on
- 1:13:25your shelf? It does until May 5th.
- 1:13:27Oh, that's right, because that's when I have to return it to the
- 1:13:29library. You know, watch some special
- 1:13:32features going in there. I think the library only deals
- 1:13:36with DVD's Blu rays do they? OK, good to know.
- 1:13:41Get there. We'll get there.
- 1:13:42Yeah. I don't think I would
- 1:13:44permanently put this on my shelf.
- 1:13:46I'm saying that now because it is a mystery.
- 1:13:49And now I know the mystery. So I don't think there's
- 1:13:52replayability as much in a movie like this because of certain
- 1:13:55reveals, Time travel back 20 years.
- 1:13:58This is a wonderful rental. You picked this up Friday night?
- 1:14:02Yep, nice thriller. Get the popcorn going.
- 1:14:04I would even say like this is theatre worthy.
- 1:14:06Like I would watch this in a theatre.
- 1:14:08Ohf wow. Yeah, I really enjoyed the
- 1:14:11movie. I had a good experience with it.
- 1:14:14The 2 1/2 hours went by pretty quick.
- 1:14:16My wife liked it as well. I hate to say this because it
- 1:14:19makes a 16 year old happy, but Jake was amazing.
- 1:14:24This is my favorite Jake Gyllenhaal movie that we've
- 1:14:26done. Oh wow, we haven't done a lot.
- 1:14:28No, but we've done a. Fair amount and I've seen more
- 1:14:30that we haven't. And even better than the day
- 1:14:32after tomorrow. Yeah, I mean all.
- 1:14:34We did do that, yeah. Source code was.
- 1:14:36Source code 1. He was good in that.
- 1:14:37One, maybe it is just eye twitch, I don't know, but I was
- 1:14:40just honing in on this character.
- 1:14:41I really connected to him even though I don't really have any
- 1:14:44characteristics that are similar to him.
- 1:14:46And Jackman was great too, I didn't connect him as much.
- 1:14:48I don't like that type of brutality so that was tough to
- 1:14:52watch. A bit of links, but I would be
- 1:14:54tempted to own it just for Jake's performance.
- 1:14:57But I think knowing that I can just pop by a library and pick
- 1:15:00it up if I had a hankering for it again, I think it would be
- 1:15:03enough for me. I don't need it stationary all
- 1:15:05the time. Great.
- 1:15:06How about yourself? Would you consider having this
- 1:15:08on your? Shelf 100%.
- 1:15:09Yeah, I loved it. I had completely forgotten about
- 1:15:13it, obviously, and what it really did was affirmed to me
- 1:15:16that Denny Villeneuve is a phenomenal filmmaker.
- 1:15:19This movie is so good looking, so dark, I thought really good
- 1:15:24performances. Everything about it works so
- 1:15:27perfectly on its own terms. I would watch this easily again.
- 1:15:31I want the special features, wanna do the deep dive, and I
- 1:15:34kind of think I want my shelf to have all of Denny Villeneuve's.
- 1:15:38At least his English speaking movies have Maelstrom as well on
- 1:15:40DVD. But I want everything because I
- 1:15:43think this guy is really incredible and he's got
- 1:15:45obviously doing 3 that's coming. Up.
- 1:15:47I know I saw the preview in the theatre.
- 1:15:49That's right. Why don't go Phil?
- 1:15:50Because I haven't watched the second one and I don't remember
- 1:15:53the first one. Where you go?
- 1:15:54Wow, it's still time. Yeah, there is.
- 1:15:56And he's going to do the next James Bond movie.
- 1:15:58I didn't know they have picked the James Bond yet.
- 1:16:00They haven't, but. Just read an article like we're
- 1:16:02just. Taking our time here but the
- 1:16:04director has been locked in so it'll be done.
- 1:16:06Evil nut, which is a first. Well, not only not British, but
- 1:16:10Canadian director to do. The 2 1/2 hour Bond movie.
- 1:16:14Interesting. We'll.
- 1:16:14See, I think the last one didn't we do a 2 1/2.
- 1:16:17I felt like Casino Royale might have been it.
- 1:16:18Might have been. Yeah, so anyway, I love the
- 1:16:20movie. I'll happily watch it anytime.
- 1:16:22Great to hear that. Something that even though it's
- 1:16:24temporary on my shelf, that will make your shelf 100% whatever it
- 1:16:28takes. Phil, what do you have cooking
- 1:16:29for us next? Week, just like Jackman, we're
- 1:16:32going to go to a little rental property I've got.
- 1:16:36OK. And you know, it's, it's, it's a
- 1:16:39little apartment and see the hijinks that ensue.
- 1:16:42Alright, sounds good. Looking forward to it.
